EDITORIAL T H E A LT E R N A T I V E S
A
Accustomed to living and breathing compression ratios, torque, and horsepower, the crippling fuel crisis had us feeling like a fish out of water. The Terai blockade rendered the normally busy streets of Kathmandu barren… for a while. Soon, a miracle took place and vehicles began running on the roads even when the petrol pumps stayed closed. Sadly, not everyone was blessed with this paranormal phenomenon and we had to resort to alternatives. Electric vehicles were no longer looked at as the weird kid who sat alone in the back of the class and cycles were in short supply. The underdogs took over and saved our ass. So, in this issue, we look into one of the most popular electric scooters in Nepal the Hero Electric Photon+. We also visit one of the pioneers in electric vehicles in Nepal: Nevi Tradelink’s Bijuli I. Check out these offerings if you’re thinking about getting yourself a battery powered transportation vehicle. Considering the conditions of the nation, we realized the importance and potential of resorting to bicycles to travel around Kathmandu. It’s a sort of conflicted epiphany where we can’t quiet decide whether we really do fall in love with bicycles or just talk highly of it until the fuel flow stabilizes. Honestly, we hope it’s not the latter. Whatever the case, we look into the pros and cons of cycling and weigh in the possibilities of making Kathmandu a cycle friendly city. If you’re still exclusively a motorhead, we have a forecast of what you can expect to see coming to Nepal in 2016. And yes, we’re excited. We hope you enjoy the issue of AutoLife, there’s a lot more to go through inside. And we hope that the next time we meet things will have been sorted and we can get back to our fossil fueled lives. Cheers

KIA REVEALS THE 2017 SPORTAGE To go on sale next year Kia Motors America has unveiled the allnew 2017 Sportage. The fourth-generation Sportage, KIA’s longest-running nameplate, wraps contemporary design around a structure that is both stiffer and more spacious than before. The Fiat Tipo, Linea’s successor, will be marketed in over forty countries across the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa). This all-new, four-door car, compact sedan embodies Fiat’s “Born to be Sedan” concept which enhances the balanced, quintessentially Italian design to guarantee personality and style without forgoing functionality. In the EMEA region, the line-up will include three trim levels, four engine versions (the 1.4 16v Fire 95 HP and the 1.6 1.6v E.torQ 110 HP petrol engines and the 1.3 MultiJet II 95 HP and 1.6 MultiJet II 120 HP turbo diesels), two transmissions (five- or six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, the latter on 1.6 E.torQ only), a palette of various body

The new car fits a reliable suspension layout for very accurate driving, brilliant roadholding and outstanding passenger comfort: independent wheels McPherson type on the front axle and interconnected wheels torque beam on the rear. The two layouts are optimised to reduce weight and contribute in this way to improving the car’s fuelefficiency. Like the splendid standard features and the availability of the Uconnect TM system with a 5″ colour touchscreen, hands-free Bluetooth system, audio streaming, text

Designed to tackle future challenges, the new Fiat Tipo was designed in Italy by Centro Stile Fiat, developed in Turkey together with Tofaş R&D, which is one of FCA’s largest research and development centres, and made in the Tofaş plant in Bursa – one of the world’s best automotive factories which has received a World Class Manufacturing Gold Medal. Prices for the Tipo in Italy were announced earlier this month, starting from 12,500 EUR (Nrs 14.13 lakh). An Indian launch is still unconfirmed.

OWNER’S REVIEW
I owned a Chevrolet Spark before buying the Tata Bolt. Thanks to the attractive TVCs and paper ads, I got impressed by the Bolt. In addition to the little research by myself, I found the Bolt to be the most practical and attractive in its class. The Tata Bolt is a good value for money hatchback since no other company is offering so many practical features at this price tag. The overall design of the car is stunning as compared to other hatchbacks in this segment. The stylish exterior is well complemented by the fabulous interior. It is spacious and equally comfortable. The Bolt is a really good hatchback in the offer from an Indian manufacturer. It does not only offer several exciting features, but is also the most affordable and attractive in its class. I have been driving the Bolt recently and I must say that I am a very happy customer. The driving experience so far has been descent. The engine is powerful and its perfect ground clearance makes it suitable for the roads of Kathmandu, unlike the others of its kind. I was really impressed with the built-in multi-drive mode of the Tata Bolt which lets you switch between three different driving modes: Sport, Eco and City, providing you the power of 3 engines into 1. All in all, I am really satisfied with this car and think that it is a good value for money hatchback.

ugar Brothers and Sons Pvt. Ltd, the sole authorized distributors of Nissan vehicles in Nepal, has announced the launch of the all-new Nissan X-Trail in the Nepalese market at a starting price of Rs 90 lakhs for the 5 seater and Rs 95 lakhs for the 7 seater version. The new model combines Nissan’s acclaimed 4x4 heritage with fresh ideas and technologies inspired by the brand’s ground-breaking crossover models. Together they form a car that redefines the compact SUV segment. Built on the new, jointly-developed Renault-Nissan Alliance Common Module Family (CMF) platform, the new X-Trail is just as tough and accomplished as the previous

generation model, but adds crossover style and efficiency, exciting design, innovative technology and exceptional comfort. Powering the new X-Trail is a powerful yet frugal MR20DD engine that delivers strong torque and excellent refinement at all speeds. The 2.0 -litre engine makes 142 bhp @ 6000 rpm while delivering a peak torque of 200Nm @ 4400 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed Xtronic CVT. Combining the sleek and stylish lines of a modern crossover with the robust appeal of a typical SUV, the new X-Trail showcases next generation SUV design, introducing a smoother, more flowing look. In keeping with Nissan’s crossover design language, the new X-Trail also places strong visual emphasis on the wheel areas, with the trademark large arches forming the cornerstones of the design. The all-new LED headlamps cut into the
bumpers, cleverly combing the upper and lower halves of the body. The lamp clusters themselves are intricately detailed, with a striking new lighting signature that gives the new X-Trail a distinctive look in low light conditions. At the rear the new X-Trail blends bold new styling cues with existing Nissan touches. The rear light clusters, for example, display the familiar ‘boomerang’ shape, while the characteristic D-pillar provides a strong visual link to both the Juke and Qashqai. As with the exterior, the new X-Trail’s interior has undergone a dramatic transformation. With more space, improved ergonomics and a host of new premium features, it sets new standards for comfort and equipment in the C-SUV sector. The split-level dashboard has been designed to be as clear and easy to navigate as possible, with the gently raised centre console housing both the infotainment facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
system and the ventilation controls. The redesigned combimeter features the Advanced Drive-Assist Display, a large five-inch colour display screen located between the two main dials. This high-resolution screen displays information from, among other sources, the new X-Trail’s safety systems, and has been designed in such a way that drivers can receive warnings without having to take their attention away from the road. The centre console houses the latest NissanConnect system with a seveninch high-resolution screen and a host of smartphone connectivity features. Practicality is another area where the new X-Trail excels. Designed from the start with the optional third row of seats, the new X-Trail’s cabin takes full advantage of the new platform’s longer wheelbase to deliver class-leading levels of space for occupants. Where some rivals fit a simple, fixed bench in the second row, the new X-Trail offers a sliding and reclining function that allows owners to adapt the luggage space and comfort to their needs. The optional third row seats have a double fold function that allows them to be folded completely flat, while headroom and heel gap also provide ample seating space.

MARUTI SUZUKI’S SHVS HYBRID TECHNOLOGY EXPLAINED Maruti Suzuki has launched a new version of its premium-mid size sedan Ciaz in India – the Ciaz Smart Hybrid which is India’s first Smart Hybrid Diesel Car. The new Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SHVS is not a hybrid vehicle like the Toyota Prius, it is a mild hybrid equipped with Suzuki’s Smart Hybrid Technology (SHVS), which gets features such as power assist, brake energy regeneration, idle engine startstop and gear-shift indicator. So, how do these features work? Let us explain.

SMART HYBRID VEHICLE BY SUZUKI (SHVS) TECHNOLOGY
The SHVS stands for Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki, a mild-hybrid system to enhance the fuel economy. The system employs an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and an advance high capacity battery. This system supplements engine’s power, making it more efficient than the conventional set up. The energy saved while decelerating/braking, which is otherwise lost, is stored in the advance high capacity battery and assists during acceleration (for eg, gradient climbing). This combination results into a peppy, powerful & fuel efficient vehicle.
SMART HYBRID FEATURES: IDLE START STOP The idle engine start/stop function on CIAZ Smart Hybrid turns off the engine automatically when the car is idling. It restarts the car as soon as the clutch is pressed. To re-start the engine, the system uses the stored energy. Restart is by belt driven ISG thereby assuring quick and silent restart.
POWER ASSIST The stored energy in advanced high capacity battery assists engine power during acceleration. This results into improved engine efficiency and
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
prevents unnecessary loss of fuel.
BRAKE ENERGY REGENERATION Regeneration of the kinetic energy makes the Ciaz a true Smart Hybrid Diesel Car. The ISG converts the energy from braking/deceleration of the car and stores it in the battery. This stored energy is later used to drive the ISG, to assist the engine’s idle start-stop function and assists the engine during acceleration.
GEAR SHIFT INDICATOR The gear shift indicator introduced in the Ciaz Smart Hybrid prompts the driver to effectively change the gears, resulting in enhanced fuel efficiency. The Ciaz SHVS with this new-age fuel-saving system is available only in diesel variants as of now. It uses the same 1.3-litre, 89 BHP diesel engine as the regular Ciaz diesel. Fuel efficiency of the Ciaz Diesel Hybrid is understood to return an improved mileage of over 28 km/l which is an decent improvement over the current diesel model’s ARAI certified mileage of 26.21km/l. According to Maruti Suzuki, Ciaz SHVS will create a new benchmark in fuel efficiency, making it friendly for the customer as well as the environment. Also, the company is expected to carry over the technology to other vehicles in its line-up in the future, in an attempt to make them more fuel-efficient.

The Photon is one of the electrically powered scooters from the Hero Electric stable. Electrically powered vehicles have become increasingly popular in the wake of the fuel crisis that has hit the nation. In our efforts to accept the changing times we decided to test ride a product that didn’t run on fossil fuel. To be completely honest, this wouldn’t have been our first preference. But it seemed like it was time to get on the “save the environment” bandwagon. Although it did take some coaxing into, we were finally able to give it a shot and test what Hero Electric has christened as a “high speed electric scooter”.
STYLING
It’s difficult to differentiate the Hero Electric Photon from any other conventional automatic scooter. It’s an all black affair with a hint of brown on the seat covers and silver accents on the grab rail and shocks. An oval polycarbonate head lamp sits atop a sleek apron clad in a combination of shiny and matt black. Indicators have been integrated into the apron as well at front fender levels. Simple plastic side panels take up the rear with clear indicator lights and a rounded tail lamp sitting below the grab rail. The seats are wide and comfortable. As like most conventional scooters, there is a compartment on the apron. There is also ample leg room, even for taller riders.
FEATURES
There is ample room in the under seat storage. It also houses a point for charging your mobile phone as well as a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) switch as an added security system to shut down the e-bike and disable the ignition On the console are two dials, both analog, which display the speedometer and the amp meter along with indicator lights. Switches comprise of the indicator switches, headlamp switch and two horns. Because push start ignition isn’t required to start the electric scooter the thumb starter has been turned into a horn. Confused? So were we. We’ll explain this later. You also get a key with remote controlled antitheft alarm activation. The Photon gets 10inch wheels, with a front disc brake and front telescopic suspension, two driving modes– economy and power.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE December 2015 37
Charging is also not a hassle. Plug the power cord into the scooter and the other end onto a charging socket for 6-8 hours to fully charge the scooter. On Power mode, the bike will run for 50km on a full charge and on Economy, the company claims it has a 65km range.
RIDE AND HANDLING
The conventional styling similar to any other automatic scooter will throw you off. It was embarrassing to be reminded that the thumb starter was a horn when we went for it out of instinct only to be answered with a loud beep. All you have to do to turn on the scooter is turn the key. And because it’s quieter than a church mouse you won’t know if it’s running, thankfully there is a red light that turns on to indicate that the machine is alive. Rolling off a dead stop comfortably took a little getting used to. If you’re on the brakes the power is completely cut off so you have to release it for the throttle to kick in. Once you get used to the mechanism you can enjoy the ride. It provides adequate torque, similar to any other scooter, but the silent nature of the Photon dampens the experience to some extent. Skeptical about the capabilities of the electric motor we took the Photon to a moderately steep climb, brought it to a complete stop and proceeded to twist the throttle. Now remember, we attempted this with a rider weighing in at a little over the 100kg mark. It put our doubts to rest and eased off to a roll comfortably, albeit the amp meter was struggling to keep itself upbeat. Also, there wasn’t too much a difference to talk about regarding the economy mode and power mode. For an electric scooter the Photon performs well. Braking is crisp thanks to the front disc. A little more response on the handlebars could have been useful. Although you won’t reach breakneck speeds, the Photon holds its own on the roads and can easily gain speeds of up to 35-40kmph. The company claims the top speed to be 45kmph which is attainable if you give it a decent amount of free space. On an uphill though, don’t expect too much of the same prowess.
VERDICT
The age of electric vehicles might be upon us. Not just considering the current situation of the nation but the entire global issue of fossil fuel consumption. The Photon is a fun electric scooter to get you started. It’s a preppy scooter that performs more than adequately to get you around the city. However, because it requires 6-8 hours of charging to reach full charge the load shedding might play a role in achieving this. The cost saved on fuel and the satisfaction of leaving behind minimal carbon footprint could be enough for many people to opt for the scooter, even if it does set you back as much as an Activa. So do we see ourselves going out and buying one for ourselves? No. We’re nonenvironmentalist scum who love internal combustion engines that makes a noise and propels you at high speeds. You have to be a better person than we are.

“We hope the government comes with a plan to make EV’s affordable for all” - Mr. Pramod Bhandari, Manager- Agni Energy Pvt. Ltd.
Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Private Limited is a pioneer of electric vehicle (EV) technologies in India which manufactures electric vehicles for customers in India and internationally. Regarded as one of the world’s most experienced EV manufacturers, the company also licenses out its electric vehicle technologies while also providing zero-emissions mobility solutions. Founded in 1994 as the REVA Electric Car Company, the company was a joint venture between the Maini Group of Bangalore and AEV LLC of USA. In May 2010, the USD 16.5 billion worth, Mahindra Group acquired a majority stake in the company, which was renamed Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Pvt Ltd. Mahindra Reva is headquartered in Bengaluru, India. Talking to Autolife Nepal, Mr. Pramod Bhandari – Manager, Agni Energy Pvt. Ltd. (the sole authorized distributors of Mahindra Reva e20 in Nepal) says, “We hope the government comes with a plan to make EV’s affordable for all”. Excerpts:

AL: How Mahindra looks at the electric vehicle market in Nepal? What are the trends and challenges? PB: Regardless of the circumstances (both short term and long term), we are very optimistic about the overall development of electric vehicle market in Nepal. Nepal as a market has a huge potential for EVs. Various factors such as the on-going fuel crisis, jampacked roads, fuel prices, etc. make EVs a viable option in Nepal. However, EV market today is very small as compared to the gasoline market. Though it has been gaining momentum, it is expected to grow at a nascent phase. There is also a strong need for long term government policies and its timely implementation in the areas of subsidies and incentives. AL: It took long for Nepali consumers to accept Electric vehicles. What according to you was the key factor which restrained Nepali consumers from buying EVs? PB: Though EVs have gained acceptance in many countries across the world, it is still not the case in Nepal. Initially, our sales failed to meet our expectation particularly due to low public awareness and several confusions regarding the EV technology, however, consumers have now realized the importance of EVs in Nepal. Over the past few months, we have received excellent response for our e2o as more
and more buyers are coming forward for enquiries. AL: How many cars have you sold so far? Who are your target market/ consumers? PB: We have sold more than 200 Mahindra Reva EVs in Nepal and growing. Our product appeals to a wide range of consumers, from NGOS and INGOS to Doctors and Housewives. AL: Has the current turn of events encouraged the government to provide more subsidies? PB: For Electric Vehicles to penetrate into the mainstream and be truly successful, it will need support from the government like complete reduction of custom duties and subsidies.Though Nepal Government has provided certain incentives, it still has not helped EV adoption on a large scale because EVs are relatively expensive as compared to their gasoline counterparts. We hope the government comes with a plan to make EV’s affordable for all because only government’s support in form of subsidy will boost sales of electric cars. Also, electricity for the cars can be locally generated; hence it’s a win-win situation for both the parties. AL: What gives the Riva e2o an upper hand amongst its rivals? PB: Despite the odds, the Riva e2o goes 120km on full charge from a standard
220V socket. It is an innovative ecofriendly car that makes for a great city car and has what it takes to get the job done. Certain features of the car such as pre-cooling the car, lock/unlock, regenerative braking, revive function and shift to vacation mode etc. can be controlled through a smart app on your phone. Each car has a mobile SIM card with a modem built-in that connects to our servers and transmits vehicle performance data to our servers. Our service engineers receive instantaneous alerts in the event of a fault in the car and can even fix some issues ‘over-theair’ using the telematics system.
Although the e2o is primarily expensive due to its technology and battery management systems, in reality the investment pays back due to its lower running costs. According to our calculations, owning the e2o approximately saves Rest 2 Lakhs per year.

AUTOLIFE OPINION
TALKING EVs
It’s been sometime since hybrid and electric vehicles are gaining popularity in Nepal. Not only are they providing relief from the recent fuel crisis, but also shifting the consumers’ preference away from liquid fuel cells. Although the long-term potentiality of these vehicles is still dubious in the Nepalese market, our auto industry stakeholders believe the government should envision a sustainable policy to promote EVs and make them affordable for all. With all the stakeholders working jointly, it is possible to enhance EV penetration in Nepal, but can this recent paradigm shift get electric and hybrids rolling in Nepal? We find out…
What is the company’s position towards electric and fuel cell cars? Do you think they can replace liquid fuels in Nepal? Toyota already has innovative electric vehicles like the Mirai and iQ under its product portfolio. However, these are not available in Nepal for several reasons. And if we’re being realistic about it, we don’t think electric and fuel cell cars can replace liquid fuels in Nepal anytime soon. Has the government realized its vision for hybrid and electric vehicles in Nepal? Frankly speaking, Nepal Government is far from realizing the potential and importance for sustainable development of hybrid and electric vehicles market in Nepal. However, we hope that, with the looming fuel crisis, Nepal government takes initiative to promote Hybrid vehicles in Nepal.

Toyota was amongst the forerunners to introduce the Toyota Prius, a fully hybrid electric, in Nepal. But that was a long time ago. What made the company pessimistic? Before launching the Prius in Nepal, we requested Nepal Government to provide subsidies and incentives on custom duties and excise duties; however, we failed to get any generous response. This was the reason why the Prius’ expectations were not met.
Ethanol and Biodiesel advocates in Nepal tell us that ethanol and biodiesel can substitute petrol and diesel respectively. Are they good alternatives? What would you pick? Yes, Biodiesel can be a worthy substitute. But, it seems Nepal Government is yet to encourage such industries. While demand incentives are increasing for electric vehicle buyers, other areas like recharging and range issues are still a problem for Nepalese buyers. Where do you see Toyota moving to in the near future for drivers who opt for electric vehicles in Nepal? For example, Mahindra Reva e2o and other electric cars (except Toyota and Honda) require charging. Toyota Hybrid vehicles never require charging, they can be self-charged. Customers can drive the vehicle 24 hrs without charging or drive upto 1000 kms without charging. To promote Hybrid and Electric vehicles in Nepal, the government should implement encouraging policies for the sustainable development of hybrid and electric vehicles and also provide add-ons like 50% rebate on Customs and Excise duty which would encourage buyers to look for alternative options.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
Maruti Suzuki recently launched the Ciaz with the Suzuki Smart Hybrid Technology (SHVS) in India. Can you explain more about this hybrid technology? Also, according to various media reports, Maruti Suzuki is also ready with its Swift model with range extender technology along with many more models in the future. Is this the appropriate technology to suit the needs of Nepalese customers? The new variant with the SHVS system will return improved mileage with over 28Km/l - a decent improvement over the current diesel model’s ARAI certified mileage of 26.21km/l. The new mild hybrid system, which incorporates an ISG (integrated starter generator), provides engine power assistance using the motor and achieves efficient power regeneration without sacrificing the economy. The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SV Hybrid’s braking system, coupled with ISG, also aids the engine start-stop technology that automatically stops the engine at a traffic light and starts upon releasing the clutch. The company is yet to ascertain its decision regarding the implementation of similar technologies in other products, however, we are optimistic. Will this new technology propel Maruti Suzuki to the top of the hybrid segment? Yes, of course! Hybrids can be the next big thing in Nepal as
heavy power-cuts restrict the desired mobility of EVs. What is the company’s position regarding electric and fuel cell cars? Do you think they can replace liquid fuels in Nepal? It’s too early to discuss about the company’s vision about electric and fuel cell cars, but we can already sense a positive shift in Suzuki’s vision towards renewable energy and other sources. In Nepal, it’s almost impossible to replace liquid fuels because of the outrageous power cuts and zero infrastructure. Has the government realized its vision for hybrid and electric vehicles in Nepal? We hope so, because the only key to build Nepal’s hybrid and electric vehicles market is a sustained policy vision. Ethanol and Biodiesel advocates in Nepal tell us that ethanol and biodiesel can substitute petrol and diesel respectively. Are they good alternatives? What would you pick? At this point, if we can come up with other alternatives that can substitute fossil fuels, then we can think something about it. Where do you see Suzuki moving to in the near future for drivers who opt for electric vehicles in Nepal? We see ourselves moving in the right direction because we have always provided required mobility depending on the demand.

What is the company’s position towards electric and fuel cell cars? Do you think they can replace liquid fuels in Nepal? We import Rs 139 billion worth of petroleum products annually making petroleum products the number one import commodity in Nepal. Therefore, it is necessary for us to decrease our reliance on petroleum products. This is the reason why Syakar Company has been the pioneers in promoting fuel efficient and environment friendly hybrid vehicles in Nepal. We’ve been lobbying together with Nepal Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) from the last 5 years for a hybrid policy in Nepal. With a suitable hybrid policy, we can save billions, which can be utilized to decrease our severe trade deficit. Moreover, hybrid vehicles are environment- friendly and more efficient than internal combustion engines. Hybrid vehicles will not immediately replace gasoline vehicles in Nepal; however, they can replace it in the near future if Nepal Government promotes EV’s mobility in Nepal. Has the government realized its vision for hybrid and electric vehicles in Nepal? Unfortunately, the government is yet to prioritize the use of hybrid and clean energy vehicles in Nepal. After years of lobbying in 2014, the government announced a 25% reduction in custom duty for hybrid vehicles which was encouraging and gave due recognition to the importance of hybrid cars in Nepal. However, hybrid cars cost significantly higher than normal vehicles, so, 25% reduction in duties is not enough to promote the sales of Hybrid’s in Nepal. We are still lobbying with the government to reduce custom duties by 50% and for the removal of excise duties on the import of hybrid vehicles. Honda was amongst the forerunners to introduce the Honda Insight, a hybrid electric, in Nepal. But that was a long time ago. What made the company pessimistic? Since, hybrid vehicles are technologically advanced, the cost of product is relatively high as compared to normal vehicles. Nepal has one of the highest custom

duties in the world, so buying a hybrid vehicle here is practically unaffordable. However, on the bright side, if the government can provide attractive incentives and custom duty reductions on these vehicles, then it would be feasible for us to import and sell hybrid vehicles in Nepal. Ethanol and Biodiesel advocates in Nepal tell us that ethanol and biodiesel can substitute petrol and diesel respectively. Are they good alternatives? What would you pick? Almost all Honda cars are E10 compatible, .i.e. we can mix 10% Ethanol with petrol for these vehicles. Ethanol is an option worth exploring as it can substitute 10% of petrol imports with domestically produced Ethanol. Nepal imports 2,84,431 Kilolitres of Petrol annually. So, 10% of that is 28,443 Kilolitres of Ethanol which can be domestically produced as the domestic annual production capacity of Ethanol is 1 crore litres. Also, a mixture of 10% ethanol and petrol improves fuel efficiency, mileage, reduces engine knocking and causes less pollution as it produces carbon dioxide instead of carbon monoxide. As for Biodiesel, it is a time and resource consuming process which hasn’t been tried before. While demand incentives are increasing for electric vehicle buyers, other areas like recharging and range issues are still a problem for Nepalese buyers. Where do you see Honda moving to in the near future for drivers who opt for electric vehicles in Nepal? Currently, Honda has hybrid and next-gen fuel cell technology vehicles which run on Hydrogen. We have not yet introduced these vehicles in Nepal yet because of several constraints. We need advance infrastructures such as charging stations throughout the nation and also proper methods to dispose and recycle the batteries. Despite the odds, we are still optimistic. We hope the government comes up with a sustainable policy to promote hybrid vehicles in Nepal.

Our EPIPHANY CYCLE CITY KATHMANDU

Coming from us this might border on the lines of hypocrisy but Kathmandu should be a cycle city. There, we said it. Getting on a cycle seems like a bizarre idea when you have a fuel guzzling vehicle at your disposal; but sometimes it just takes a crippling blockade to knock some sense into our heads. We, as a city and a nation are purpose built for bicycles.
For most of us, our daily commuting distances top out at a maximum of 20kms. To put that into perspective, that is roughly the distance you would cover if you were to travel from Bhainsepati to Lazimpat and back again. We’re going to take a shot in the dark and assume that most of us don’t have to travel that distance on a daily basis, especially not on a stretch. Keeping the above assumptions in mind, your destination is only 10kms away. At first this might seem like quite a distance, but on a bicycle all it takes you is 45 minutes of time and a damp undershirt. At a pace of 20km/h it will take you 30mins to ride that distance. We’ve included traffic stops, steep uphill climbs where you stop to catch your breath and a phone-call from an upset partner. Lucky for us, our culture isn’t as uptight as the western world in terms of punctuality (public display of affection, choosing your sexual orientation and other matters are different stories). And even if you are keen on punctuality you can always leave early and/or pedal faster. What do you get from riding a bike? Well, for the ones who still have a long way to go on the corporate ladder, you save
money on fuel expenses. Even if you have a very fuel efficient motorcycle that gives you a mileage of 50kmpl, traveling 520kms a month will need 10liters of petrol a month. Cut that out of your expenses and you’re saving close to Rs.1000 a month. You will spend that much money on your bicycle if you get it serviced at one of the upscale cycle showroomsonce every three months. Now, saving enough money to buy a t-shirt might not get everyone to switch to cycling. However, there are more benefits. By ditching your fuel guzzler for a pedal powered contraption you have just earned the right to call yourself a greenie. You can now tsk at the Range Rovers for their massive carbon footprints, boast about having cut down on your own and act like you have a general knowledge about what carbon footprints are. If you’re not too keen about saving the planet, saving yourself might tickle your fancy. Cycling is good for your heart, muscles, immune system and your waistline. You might be wheezing up the stupid uphill climb before you get to work but it is better than resting your belly on a motorcycle’s fuel tank or strapping it under
We, as a city and a nation are purpose built for bicycles. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
a seatbelt. Don’t throw out your gym membership just yet because cycling 20kms a day won’t get you ripped. But you can definitely down that extra beer or devour the second plate of momos. There’s more good news. Cycling took off as a trend and it has been escalating in popularity for the last decade. This has created a hike in demand for bicycles which has been duly met with the availability of some of the best mountain bike brands in the world. Considering that our country is blessed geographically, if not in any other way, you get to explore some of the most beautiful places in the world on your mountain bike. On the flip side, you will need some deep pockets to buy proper mountain bikes but it could be a worth investment if it helps you discover a hidden passion. But if intercity travel is all you’re after then a generic brand will do just as well as a branded mountain bike. Unfortunately, it’s not all rainbows and butterflies for the cyclists. We, as a nation, aren’t particularly known for our forward thinking capabilities, so we won’t act surprised about the lack of cycling lanes and street lights in the city. That puts cyclists at a higher risk on the roads. The fact that motorists on the road don’t consider you as a living being doesn’t help the cause either. You can negate the risks, though, by cycling sensibly. Wear proper high-viz gear, wear a helmet and for god’s sake stick to your lane; if you’re weaving between fast moving vehicles your chances of being plastered to the floor increases significantly. We do understand that it might not be for everyone but cycling is a very possible alternative for the majority of the people in Kathmandu. If your livelihood depends on your ability to get to different places within a specified time frame, you might be better off with a commuter motorcycle. However, as long as you’re ready and willing to get off your lazy ass and pedal, there is hardly anything keeping you from switching to cycling. And you don’t have to rely completely on bicycles either. Park your car in the garage and opt for the bike for a few days of the week. You can even go ride with your friends to the hills where you can enjoy the beauty that our country has in abundance; air-conditioned cars can only get you so far when the roads dissolve into dirt and rocks. As people who live, breathe and dream automobiles, it took a lot of soul searching and deliberation to admit to ourselves that cycling is a considerable mode of transportation. In fact, we’re still conflicted about whether this sudden love for cycles is solely because of the fuel shortage. We cannot rule out the chance of us, and so many others who have started cycling, storing away our bicycles the second fuel flow stabilizes. Nevertheless, for the time being, we’ll just promise ourselves to stick to cycling as much as possible.

AUTOLIFE TEST DRIVE
AT LEAST IT’S
ELECTRIC
T
WORDS & PHOTOS : AUTOLIFE TEAM
The Bijuli-I doesn’t come with many bells and whistles, but it is still one of the best options. The electric fourwheeler is one of the first offerings from Nevi Trade Link which is a company that was involved in the Safa Tempo campaign and one which has taken green transportation initiative further by importing 100 per cent electric cars and buses from China. To be completely honest the Bijuli wasn’t something we would enthusiastically spring for, but one look at the chaotic lines at the fuel pumps definitely changed our minds. If you really think about it, a car should move forward when you depress a pedal, stop when you put your foot down on the other, turn when you tug on the steering wheel and keep you within an enclosed containment throughout your journey. The Bijuli-I does all of that without a single drop of fossil fuel consumption, which is just great news for the environment. We test out if it is also good news for people who are sick and tired of the fuel shortages.

EXTERIOR
The hatchback doesn’t look like your regular smart car on the road. It isn’t futuristic in appearance and it doesn’t flaunt many design aspects to make it stand out from the crowd. It is a standard small hatchback that runs on the very smart-car like tiny wheels under high arches. Up front is a triple slated grille, flanked with combined headlamps. The bottom bumper has a black honeycomb grille with smaller fog lamps on the bumper. It has a short bonnet with sharp creases running from the grilles to the windshield. The side profile is also simple, standing at a medium stance with prominent shoulder lines and traditional outside rear view facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
mirrors that come in the same colour as the body. Around the back is a bulky bottom bumper with integrated indicator split tail lamps above them on either sides. The Bijuli badge is prominent under the rear windshield.
INTERIOR
There isn’t much to write home to about the interiors either. It is a simple setup that comfortably seats 4 large adults. The instrument console displays the speed, amp meter (which is common in electric vehicles) and battery gauge. The center console has a switch with Chinese characters on it, which we
assumed was one to switch the car between different driving modes. Turns out it operates the air-conditioning. And yes it does have an air-conditioning unit as well, but it barely qualifies as one. Air vents sit above the switch and on either ends of the dash. A short gear knob sits beside the driver seat and a large red button beside the accelerator which kills the engine. Door panels are a mix of grey and black with powerwindow buttons to operate the front windows. You need to traditionally windup the rear ones. The dash doesn’t scream quality and is made up of plastic and comes in black. Its steering wheel comes in plain grey with horn button that sit under your thumb. AUTOLIFE December 2015 55
PERFORMANCE
Switch on the ignition and the car comes alive with no sign life. You don’t have to worry about the clutch as it isn’t there. Just shift into drive and hit the accelerator to get moving. It has surprisingly good punch off the line and is swift to get rolling. Give it a good strong dab and it will zip along, albeit slightly less enthusiastically on steep climbs. We wouldn’t go as far as to suggest risky overtaking maneuvers though. Suspension could definitely use some more work. You can feel the stress as soon as smooth tarmacs end. Braking is another aspect that could use a lot of improvement. Having to put your entire weight onto the brakes does not inspire confidence. On the bright side, the handling is pretty good especially when maneuvering through traffic.
VERDICT
Electric cars are the future of automobiles, or so they say. Climate experts have shown concerns about the effects of the overuse of fossil fuels and we’ve been brushing aside the concerns. Yet, as ignorant as it might sound, switching to electric is still a last resort for us. Of course cruising by closed fuel station does have its upsides. The Bijuli operated smoothly, handles well and does eventually come to a stop when you put on the brakes. It claims to go to excesses of 60kmh and also claims to have enough range to reach Banepa from Kathmandu and back (approx. 60km). And on paper that is very good. But it does not give you much else to celebrate. It is innately basic and luxury isn’t one of its characteristics. And if you’re content with having left close to zero carbon footprint and without the worry about any fuel crisis, then this might just be what you’re looking for.

Zero Motorcycles W
We’ll come out straight and admit that we’re not entirely behind the notion of electric vehicles. Just thinking about replacing loud throttle happy engines with timid electric trotters sends chills up our spines; and not the good kind. However, times are a changing. Electric vehicles, though still not quite performance or price-competitive products in the majority, are turning into a really exciting thing. Tesla reigns supreme in the four wheeler market and yes we dream about being one of the greenies when their fleet comes to Nepal. But let’s face it, we are still a motorcycle loving nation and manly burly choices in that department are slim and narrow. Or is it? More often than not, electric motorcycles are small, silent, slow, and something that wheezes like a fat kid doing a 100m dash when asked to ride uphill. However, Zero Motorcycles begs to differ. Check out the motorcycle that is has changed the perception of electric motorcycles from that of a timid armadillo to a sprinting cheetah. We wouldn’t mind having these electric beasts on our roads. Check out their rowdy lineup of electrically charged madness.

AUTOLIFE FEATURE
Although fantastic new vehicles are regularly launched by major automobile manufacturers elsewhere in the world, only a handful are feasible for our roads. The global auto industry (particularly Indian) is looking for an enormous ride this year with exclusive launches set throughout the upcoming year. Best of all, not all the automakers have spilled details on what they’re bringing next year, so we can expect some surprises once they are announced. Here’s our top picks from the lot that could find its way into Nepal in 2016.
TATA ZICA
The Indian automaker has already unveiled the ‘ZICA’ hatchback online. The much-awaited compact hatchback from Tata Motors is a replacement for the Indica and will be positioned below the Bolt in the company’s line-up. Scheduled for a January 2016 rollout, the Tata Zica hatchback is built on a thoroughly modified Indica’s XO platform and is the third product under the company’s HORIZONEXT umbrella. The hatchback will be powered by both petrol and a diesel engine. The petrol variant gets a 1.2 litre 3-cylinder Revotron engine which produces a solid 84 bhp @ 6000 rpm and max torque of 114 Nm @ 3500 rpm, while the diesel produces 67 bhp @ 4000 rpm and 140 Nm. Tata Motors will load the Zica with a plethora of features like Harman infotainment system, mounted audio and call controls, electronic power steering, height-adjustable driver seat, dual front airbags and ABS with EBD, electrically adjustable ORVMs and rear defogger, among many others. There is also going to be a compact sedan based on the Zica hatchback which will be launched later. Expected launch in Nepal: mid-2016

The Nexon will come with 7-seat configuration, and derive its design inspiration from the Land Rover Evoque. The Nexon is expected to get Zica’s 1.2 liter Revotron three cylinder petrol engine and a new four cylinder diesel all-aluminium 1.5 liter engine, under their new Revotorq family. Expected launch in Nepal: late -2016
ALL-NEW FORD ENDEAVOUR:
Ford’s latest ‘ENDEAVOUR’ SUV redefines its segment while striking a delicate balance between rugged capability and refinement. Ford recently launched this bold seven-seated SUV in Thailand. The front fascia resembles an upright threepart grille, small sweptback headlamps, a stylish front bumper under-guard flows onto the bumper to merge into the fog lamps. Inside, the Endeavour will borrow design cues from its pickup truck sold mainly in the US such as the Ford F-150. The new Ford Endeavour will likely be sold with two engine and transmission options – a 2.2-litre 148 bhp diesel and a 6-speed manual transmission, and a 3.2-litre 197 bhp diesel and a 6-speed automatic transmission. We really hope Go Automobiles Pvt. Ltd, the sole authorized distributors of Ford vehicles in Nepal, will launch the 2016 Ford Endeavour in Nepal next year. Expected launch in Nepal: mid- 2016

Toyota may offer the India bound Fortuner with two engine options – a 2.8-litre diesel producing 177 bhp and 450 Nm of torque and a 2.4-litre diesel producing 150 bhp and 400 Nm of torque. No word yet on the availability in Nepal but we expect UTS, the sole authorised dealer of Toyota vehicles in Nepal, will launch the new Fortuner by mid-2016. Expected launch in Nepal: mid-2016

ROYAL ENFIELD HIMALAYAN
Numerous spy-shots and videos of the Royal Enfield Himalayan in prototype form have surfaced online, but the upcoming Indian Auto Expo will be the first time we’ll see the production model. As the company’s first adventure-tourer, the Royal Enfield Himalayan 410cc scrambler will feature a Continental GT525like front mudguard, spoke wheels, disc brakes with steel braided brake lines, black-painted engine, raised handlebar, an ever-so-slightly upswept exhaust, roundshaped headlight and round-shaped rear view mirrors. Expected launch in Nepal: mid-2016.
OTHER NOTABLE MENTION
2016 Hyundai Tucson
BENTLEY BENTAYGA AND JAGUAR F-PACE
Maybe our expectations are way too high here. But considering, our SUV-loving rich folks, we would love someone to place an order for these posh beauties on wheels. Touted as the world’s most expensive SUV at a price tag of $230,000, the Bentayga is the first SUV that the luxury car brand has created. With an extravagantly lavish interior, monstrous W12 engine and frankly astonishing performance figures – top speed is a scarcely credible 187mph, the Bentayga has quickly been branded ‘the most powerful, luxurious and exclusive utility vehicle in the world’. After what seems like an age since we first saw numerous teasers, videos and hints surrounding the Jaguar F-Pace, it was finally unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. As the British automaker’s first SUV, the F-Pace will focus on a sporty driving experience to separate it from what the model’s sister brand Land Rover has to offer. The F-Pace comes with three engine options. The range kicks off with Jaguar Land Rover’s 178bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium diesel, available with either rear or four-wheel drive, with a choice of six-speed manual or eight-speed auto transmissions. All other F-Paces are 3.0-litre V6powered, with a choice of a 296bhp diesel or the 375bhp supercharged petrol also found in the F-type. Both are 4wd and eight-speed auto only.

Riding Gear F R O M

H O M E L A N D
A rider in full gear in the roads of Nepal is a rare sight which will elicit a barrage of turning heads and inquiries. We’re too used to people riding motorcycles in casuals, even sporting some breezy shorts, vest and flip flops. The only problem is it’s not the safest thing to be wearing when you’re riding a motorcycle. Granted that most of the commuter motorcycles are used for short trips around the city omitting proper safety wear isn’t excusable. Of course the fact that proper riding gear will render a financial setback so brutal you might just consider walking for the rest of your life. So keeping this in mind we’ll look the other way as long as you’re wearing a good helmet, jacket, jeans and not flipflops. However, owning proper motorcycle gear should be a priority if you’re someone who rides a high performance machine or goes on fairly regular motorcycle trips. Still doesn’t make it any easier to get good quality riding gear at an affordable price… or does it? Alpha Riding Gear is a Nepali motorcycle clothing company that actually produces high quality certified safety gear. And we actually mean it. The products are definitely inspired from bigger brand names but the quality of the materials and safety considerations are top of the notch. Check out some of the products they have on offer: ALL SIZES ACCORDING TO EUROPEAN SIZING
Jacket This Poly-mesh riding jacket is light weight and provides decent protection with good airflow. If you love the freedom of riding and want all the fresh air around you to keep you cool, this should interest you. The primary purpose of wearing one is to reduce the impact to the torso, hands and back, in case of an accident.

Gloves The primary motto of wearing riding gloves is protection to your palm, fingers, knuckles and wrists in case of an accident. When one falls during an accident, the body’s natural reaction is to pull out your palm and brace yourself for impact and hence, in most cases, your palm and fingers are the first to hit the road. This is why wearing a pair of decent protective motorcycle riding gloves is paramount.

Boots Whether you’re hitting the highways or ripping up the urban streets, proper foot wear will help you prevent injuries, especially ankle fractures. On impact with the road, the ankle bends with such force and speed that it simply snaps and breaks. One of the most important safety feature of riding boots is to prevent this. Most riding boots are stiff around the ankle to prevent the ankle from bending beyond a certain limit. They also have armor around the ankle area for added impact protection.

Upper Mustang, before eventually finishing in Tatopani, where the riders enjoy a well deserved soak in the hot springs.
23 riders from 12 different countries joined 6 local riders to take on what is now commonly recognised as the highest and one of the toughest mountain bike races on the world calendar.
Despite a 50% drop in rider numbers due to the April earthquakes, the organisers, Mountain Biking Worldwide, decided to go ahead with the event regardless, feeling that the publicity surrounding the race would provide a great platform for reassuring tourists that Nepal was still a safe and beautiful country to travel to.
The race covers 400km, with 12000m of ascent over 8 days of racing, starting in the hot and dusty foothills as the route travels through Nuwakot, Gorkha and BesiSahar, before climbing up through Chame and Manang and peaking out on the 5416m Thorong La pass. From there the route takes riders to Kagbeni, on the edge of
Support for the race came from some of Nepal’s most prestigious companies. The race was title sponsored by The North Face Nepal, who have supported the race for the last 3 years, and the ground logistics were taken care of by the Yeti Group of companies, who despite the obvious problems related to the current fuel crisis, ensured each and every

MTB-Nepal, a relatively new local company providing mountain bike coaching and tours provided invaluable advise on the physical course, and UK companyTorq supplied the racers with cycling specific sports nutrition. The International Guesthouse in Thamel, provided a home from home for many of the international riders and also put on a “Welcome Home” party for when the riders were safely back in Kathmandu after the race had finished. The race was expected to be a battle between 4 times previous champion and current National MTB champion, Ajay PanditChhetri, and Yuki Ikeda of Japan who was returning for a third bite at the title. Unfortunately, Yuki crashed during stage 4, cracking a rib, which all but negated any chance facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
of him being able to push Ajay all the way to the finish line. In the end it was Australian, Peter Butt,( the first ever international rider to make in onto the podium back in 2012), that proved to be the closest competition for the National champ, but in the end Ajay was too strong, finishing 34 minutes ahead of Peter. Once again, the Nepali riders proved that they are force to respect, with 3 riders in the top 5 finishers. 1st Ajay PanditChhetri (Nepal) – 23.00.06 2nd Peter Butt (Australia) – 23.34.15 3rd Narayan GopalMaharajan (Nepal) – 24.10.01 4thAaymanTamang (Nepal) 24.29.59 5th Yuki Ikeda (Japan) – 25.21.59
finish 12th overall, with the only other female of the race, Tan Tryhorn of Australia finishing in 13th. At the closing ceremony a number of riders either donated their prize money or made pledges to the NCRR (Nepal Cyclists Ride to Rescue), who are in the midst of plans to rebuild 7 schools destroyed in the earthquakes, with over $10,000 being raised by the event. 2016 will be the 10th anniversary of The Yak Attack and the organisers are planning something special to celebrate. With entries already reaching 50% capacity, it’s looking like the race will be the biggest and best to date. The future is looking bright for mountain biking in Nepal.

AUTOLIFE EVENT WATCH
TANSEN ULTRA 2015 Save the date for a spectacular outdoor meet like none other, where mountain bikers and runners blaze through the old Tansen town. - Text and Photos by Anuj D. Adhikary
THE
quaint hillstation of Tansen is gearing up for some thunderous trail action once again! Organized by Dharohar Adventures and Gnarly, Tansen Ultra 2015 will see three flagship races: Downhill, Ultra Trail Running and for first time in Nepal - Urban Cross-country. The three-day event is scheduled for December 26th to December 29th, 2015, and ready to bring more than 300 participants, including professionals and amateurs alike. Whether you don’t mind a 12-foot drop or prefer to call yourself an enthusiastic walker for a noble cause, Ultra Tansen with ten different categories has something in store for everyone! Further, a hefty prize money for winners - possibly the largest sum for a one-day event - is a tempting icing on the cake, and the 5K Charity Fun Run to support social organization Prisoners Assistance Nepal (PA Nepal) and Gnarly Empowerment Outdoors Fund definitely gets you karma points. “We are overwhelmed by the response we’ve received from lovely people of Tansen,” says race director Shyam Limbu of Gnarly. “With their encouragement and support, Gnarly is determined to make Palpa the most happening destination for

recreational outdoor activities as well as competitive sports.” “Palpa is not a stranger to outdoor sports anymore,” maintains Subash Kakshapati, Director of Dharohar Adventures and a Tansen resident. He adds, “The entire town came to life in the Urban Downhill race in 2014 and people since have embraced such outdoor events wholeheartedly. These promote not just sports but also help establish Palpa as a prominent adventure destination.” Moreover, a short 5K Charity Fun Run in Tansen Ultra hopes to firstly commemorate the great deeds of award-winning social organization PA Nepal, which strives to empower shelter, educate and empower underprivileged youths; and secondly, to fund training program for youth and women in adventure sector as professional guides and races through Gnarly Empowerment Outdoors Fund. With the Charity Fun Race, we seek to promote social welfare of promising youth while also developing more female professionals in the line of adventure, which currently sees next to no women guides and racers, especially in cycling, running and trekking. The Charity run is open for the entire town of Tansen and visiting spectators; of all age and gender from all walks of like to give back to the society.

TRAILS DOWNHILL
The Downhill trail starts from Shreenagar View Tower and following natural trails, stairs and a technical section through the woods, rolls down to the town. Both Elite and Open categories race on the same track. Distance: 1.5K Forest section: 75% Urban section: 25%
URBAN CROSS-COUNTRY
The Cross-country circuit starts from the Bank Road, taking riders through narrow alley ways, paved roads, Tansen’s dreaded uphills and technical downhill bits. The urban trail makes a full loop after further intense pedaling bouts on stairs, small jumps and switchbacks. Elite makes 6 laps on the circuit; Women, Open and Junior do 3 on the same loop. Whereas, 15K will make a clockwise loop around Tansen on a steep drop towards Madi and then back on foot trails up to the town. The circumnavigation will be equal parts downhill as uphill. 5K Charity Fun Run on the other hand has been marked to take runners to the most prominent sections within the town to showcase the pristine beauty, culture and splendor of Tansen, while giving back to the society. All three race trail runs start and end at Bank Road. The trails have been marked and Palpalis are ready to host what is shaping up as the most awesome way to welcome 2016.
