As of this moment, while we write this down, the country’s most important festival approaches but the nation is still reeling from the effects of the blockade in the terai region. With fuel shortages hitting the general public hard, the number of automobiles on the roads has significantly gone down. Worse yet, there are several vehicles that have not been able to enter through the border and that has crippled the auto industry just like the rest of the businesses of the country. However, keeping true to the spirit of our nation, we at AutoLife aren’t just going to lay back and watch the world go by. Especially not when there are so many new cars in the market post the NADA Autoshow. And we have the hottest picks for you this month.

Owner’s Review I owned a Hyundai i10 before buying the Skoda Rapid. I thought of opting for a proper sedan after driving the hatchback for a couple of years. While searching for a new sedan, we - me and my husband, were looking for good mileage, spaciousness, vehicle dimensions and low cost of ownership. We test drove other sedans but the Skoda Rapid was the comfortable of them all. Hence, we narrowed our purchasing decision to the Rapid. And I think we’ve have made the right choice.

The exterior is extremely well designed and the interior is equally fabulous. The sedan is spacious and the seats are highly comfortable making the vehicle excellent for long drives. I have taken the car for a few short trips around the valley, and I did not face any problems, neither with the performance nor with the comfort. The handling and performance has been amazing so far. Talking about the suspension, the Rapid has a decent ground clearance and handles the bumps and potholes easily. Besides, the mileage is very good as compared with other sedans in the segment. The customer service of Skoda is excellent. The team is extremely supportive and they actually make an effort to call their customers about the servicing dates. The Skoda Rapid meets my expectations and I have to admit that this sedan is a good value for money. All in all, I have had a very good driving experience so far and I would certainly recommend it to others who are thinking of buying a sedan for themselves.

OWNER’S REVIEW
I exchanged my Tata Indica Quadrajet for the Zest. Since Zest is Tata’s first offering under the HORIZONEXT strategy, I am quite happy about my purchase. The Zest has brought in a lot of features in the interior that add a feeling of luxury to the same Nepalese customers, not to mention a new generation Petrol Engine and a host of first-in-class features. I was attracted to the car by the beautiful design, its ground clearance and spaciousness as compared to all other sedans in this segment. This car gives me complete satisfaction while driving whether it is the comfort of the cozy interiors, the excellent stability, ground clearance, powerful engine, good mileage etc. The multi-drive modes that lets you choose from three settings - Eco, City and Sport – which can be accessed via click of a couple of buttons. The ride quality is impressive for a car in this class. The driveability in city is wonderful. I have taken the Zest to quite a few places outside the valley and I must say the Zest hasn’t failed me one bit. The Zest is very stable at high speeds and safety features gives good confidence while driving. Also, the Zest rides over the potholes and lumpy bits just like it’s been specifically designed to do just that. The Zest is very stable at high speeds and safety features gives good confidence while driving. As with the after sales service, I feel that Tata’s post sales service is excellent. Overall, the Zest is a value for money car and I have been quite satisfied with the car’s amazing ride quality.

What Honda has here is a cohesive form they like to call ‘Crossfade Monoform Design’
H
Honda entered the hatchback market 6 years ago with a lot of promise with their second generation Jazz; it set the benchmark for premium hatchbacks. However, despite global success, it fell short of massive local success because of its less than appealing prices in the Nepali and Indian market. To be honest, despite being an amazing hatchback, it did not fare too well when the likes of Hyundai took over the market with a well priced product that featured a list of creature comforts. Over the years, Honda has learned its lesson and improved on its shortcomings. Now, with a tried and proven engine, a brand name that commands a stronghold in the market, and finally a competitive pricing, what we have now is a force to be reckoned with. We test the newest offering from Honda in the form of a hatchback that is all set to make a massive impact with its comeback. Here is the 3rd generation Honda Jazz.
EXTERIORS
What Honda has here is a cohesive form they like to call ‘Crossfade Monoform Design’ which essentially is different from conventional cars that are classified as twobox or three-box vehicles. Its MPV’ish styling incorporates sharp aggressive designs which facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
brings you the best of both worlds. The Honda Jazz has been careful not to overdo things with the chrome treatment and the front end brandishes a mature combination of a large black grille with a hint of silver where a large Honda emblem sits in the centre. Design cues such as the narrow headlights have been borrowed from the City which works well on this hatchback; however the Jazz houses H4 bulbs while the City has double barrel lights. To give it a sporty appeal, the belt line has been extended through the side of the body all the way to the tail lights complimenting a low stance. The roofline flows well into the integrated rear spoiler and gives the hatchback its MPV’ish styling that we mentioned earlier. Sharp shoulder line creases running through the length of the body helps give the Jazz its edgy appearance. Honda has been slightly more liberal with the use of chrome in the rear of the Jazz. A well placed chrome strip runs through the width of the rear. The tail lights house LED bulbs. Faux honeycomb vents have been inserted at the bumper corners and gives the rear more character.
AUTOLIFE October 2015 31
INTERIORS AND FEATURES The interiors of the Jazz are similar to that of the City. It is an all black affair in the top spec variant while the mid and lover variants get the popular black and beige combo. There is a 5 inch head unit (6.2 inch touch screen in top variant) that operates the stereo and Bluetooth telephony. It also works as a reversing camera. Top variants also get touch sensitive Auto AC panels which works well.
The steering wheel has a nice feel to it and has the usual steering mounted controls that let you operate the audio and telephony.
The steering wheel has a nice feel to it and has the usual steering mounted controls that let you operate the audio and telephony. Well integrated into the dash is the instrument cluster that houses two analog dials displaying the rpm meter and speedometer and a digital MID showing a trip meter, distance to empty, and fuel consumption. The ambient lighting turns green when you’re driving sensibly and blue when you’re not. To toggle through the MID, you need to use the stalk that’s located at the top right. While the steering wheel adjusts for rake, telescopic adjustment is not offered. Sadly, there is no engine start/stop button. Inside, the cabin is a spacious ordeal and the cabin feels wider than most cars in its segment. There is plenty of knee room and the Jazz can seat 4 passengers. The VX variant also offers the luxury of what is touted as “magic seats” that allow you to utilize the flexibility of the seating to create several seating arrangements and fit in a lot of stuff. At 354 liters, the boot space is the largest amongst hatchbacks.

PERFORMANCE
Born and bred under the Japanese brand name, there is little complaint when it comes to the Honda engine and its performance. We drove the 1.2L petrol version which had under its hood the familiar 1.2L i-VTEC 4 cylinder mill that powered the Brio and Amaze. The engine produces 89 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 110 Nm of torque @ 4,800 rpm. It is well powered but could do better in terms of bottom end rpm performance which might require you to make regular downshifts. But higher up the revs the Jazz finds its stride and pleads to be pushed. Acceleration is good and you’ll see that it performs well when you’re not shy with the accelerator. The gear ratios are tall so you will have to downshift to overtake. Luckily, the gear shifts are smooth and change gears with a satisfying click. Maneuvering in traffic isn’t a gargantuan task because the Jazz responds well to your inputs. Steering is light and gives adequate feedback. Taking corners is satisfying and you won’t find yourself struggling to not soil your pants.

VERDICT
The premium hatchback segment has little room to spare and competition is tough. One wrong move and you’re out of the competition; making a comeback won’t be an easy task. When it first came out, the Jazz set a benchmark for premium hatchbacks but did not fare well in the local market due to their pricing strategy. Six years later, the bar has been raised for the segment. It was imperative that Honda come with their guns blazing, which they did to a certain extent. As a well trusted company should, Honda has not failed when it comes to performance. The 1.2L petrol that we drove was decent and felt adequate for city driving. In terms of appearance, there is little to complain about the Jazz. It might not be overly flamboyant, but who wants that anyways? It definitely looks good and provides a list of creature comforts which increases the appeal of the vehicle. Most importantly, Honda has been careful to make sure that the pricing is more appealing than it previously was. And this makes it worth the consideration for customers who want a premium hatchback that is backed by a brand name that seems to tickle the fancy of all Nepalese people.

Superficial cladding integrated into an SUV type body but priced at a much lower margin seems to have hit the right chords with the Nepali market, giving rise to the rapidly increasing crossover market. This market first made its appearance when manufacturers (more specifically a German juggernaut currently in hot waters) began slapping on the word ‘Cross’ alongside their hatchbacks that were aesthetically optimized to give a larger appearance. Things have definitely changed and as the new segment began hitting high strides manufacturers began focusing less on the looks and more on tweaking performances to make sure customers get what they pay for. Now entering the segment is Suzuki with their first ever crossover named The S Cross, and that is reason enough for the existing competitors to break a sweat. The biggest automobile distributor in Nepal is wading into one of the most prolific segments in the market and that should be enough cause for concern. The Indian and Nepali market have dropped the prefix and touted the internationally known SX4 S-Cross as the S-Cross. Under the biggest automobile distributor in Nepal (CG Motocorp), the Suzuki brand name is widespread and well trusted. One of the most awaited products to enter the country and a well placed competitor already waiting, the S Cross is ready to pounce onto the roads of Nepal. And we test it out first hand.
Exterior The S-Cross is a well designed vehicle that doesn’t scream for attention. It is far from aggressive or excessively glamorous and sticks to more mature design elements. It is taller than other crossovers and has a significant road presence. Up front the S Cross holds some resemblance to the SX4 sedan. It has a double slated grille with a

healthy dose of chrome and a large S on the center. There are silver accents on the headlamps and chrome treatment on the fog lamps. It comes equipped with bi-xenon projector headlamps which is a first in the segment; the LED strip at the bottom works as a pilot light and not DRLs. Matte silver accents have been added to the front & rear skid plates and side skirts, as well as the silver roof rails, to give more design character to the S Cross. Although the S Cross comes equipped with 16 inch alloys, they could definitely have been designed better. The ORVMs which are electronically foldable have integrated LED indicators as well as a nifty feature that allows them to rotate forward if bumped the wrong way (say by an over aggressive biker). There aren’t major shoulder lines that run through the side, keeping that profile of the car subtle and classy. It also seems longer than other vehicles in the segment and has a pretty decent ground clearance of 180mm which is a good utility factor for the roads of Nepal.

Suzuki have not conformed to the norm of garnishing the rear with an abundance of chrome and have also refrained from slapping on the chrome strip that seems to be appearing on every other car recently. The rear has a well designed taillamps and black plastic claddings on the bottom. A really useful feature was the rear quarter glass next to the blackened C pillars.
Interior and Features Inside, the S-Cross exudes class and sophistication. Suzuki has been adamantly improving on their build quality which was exemplified with their Ciaz. The torch has been passed over to their newest crossover and the S-Cross does pretty well to keep things up to par. The cabin is spacious and comfortable with ample legroom and shoulder room for all passengers. Suzuki has gone with an all black interior with silver accents which helps give it a premium appeal. The use of leather on the seats, steering wheel, door armrests and door-pads further helps the case. Dashboards are built with a soft rubbery material which has a soft texture to the touch. Steering wheels are decent and have been borrowed from other Suzuki models (Celerio) and clothed in leather and a number of buttons to control audio and telephony. It is adjustable for reach and rake so the driver can find a comfortable riding position. The central armrest is well positioned to rest your left arm but for those who don’t use it, it might get some getting used to. The center console houses a very useful 7” Smartplay touchscreen audio system which gets touch sensitive volume adjusters. The system offers Bluetooth connectivity, USB and Aux and doubles as a rearview camera display. The instrument cluster illuminates with blue rings which works well with the dark interiors. It also displays an MID which not only lets you toggle thorough instant fuel and average fuel economy, as well as which door is open (if one is). There is an engine start/stop button, auto dimming IRVM, automatic rain sensing wipers and light sensors for automatic headlights. All trim levels are equipped with ABS, dual airbags and front & rear disc brakes.
Performance Although the premium crossover might not get the highest marks in terms of over the top designs, it scores top marks for drivability and performance. We were handed the keys to the 1.3 liter diesel and it took us some time to convince ourselves it wasn’t a 1.6. Bring the engine into life and the diesel engine eggs you to let your eager right foot have a go at the pedal and the car responds with the same torquey enthusiasm. Mated to a 5 speed gear box the torque figures of 89BHP @4000rpm and 200Nm of torque @1750 rpm are similar to that of the Ciaz. Throttle response was good and it held its own during overtaking maneuvers. The diesel engine pulls well through all the rev ranges. We hear the 1.6L is even better but this time we had to suffice with its smaller variant.
We were handed the keys to the 1.3 liter diesel and it took us some time to convince ourselves it wasn’t a 1.6
As explosive as it is, the S-Cross performs well on open roads as well. It is a calm cruiser and feels grounded and stable due

to its amazing driving dynamics. It is keen to change directions on demand and corners with confidence. Thanks to a firm suspension it performs well at high speeds and does well to counter bumpy roads. Well defined gear shifts allows for precise gear shifts which helps maintain its premium feel. The clutch is well weighted and won’t pose many problems in stop and go traffic. Overall the S Cross is a beautiful car to drive with little place to complain.
Verdict For an image conscious nation, the concoction of SUV designs at a less than SUV price hits the nail on the head. Crossovers, although not to the liking of hardcore SUV enthusiasts, have become very popular in the market. However, Suzuki seemed to be lagging behind in the segment because they were busy with the launch of other products. But when Hyundai, Suzuki’s strongest competitor, launched their compact crossovers (i20 Active and later on the Creta) it was game ON! It didn’t take long for Suzuki to bring in the S-Cross in the Nepali market. What we have as a result of this is Suzuki’s first crossover. And when Suzuki come, they come with guns blazing. However, they’re not relying on their strong suit of economy and a cheap price tag. It is easy on the eyes (although sans of over the top glamour), a great car to drive and all that backed with a trusted brand name. Although it falls on the pricier side of the spectrum it makes up for it with a plethora of creature comforts, good quality and driving satisfaction. We can’t wait for higher capacity variant to enter the market.

AUTOLIFE INTERVIEW
“ As a key player in the Nepali automobile sector, our key strengths outweigh the challenges “ Rupesh Sharma Bhatta, Asst. General Manager –Sales and Marketing, Hyundai Nepal, spoke to Autolife about the overall Nepali market dynamics and Hyundai’s newest offering, the Creta. Excerpts:
48
AUTOLIFE October 2015
www.autolife.com.np
AL: If you could sum up the recently concluded NADA Auto Show in a paragraph, then what would it be? The 2015 NADA Auto Show was fabulous. We’ve got a lot of good response from the visitors. Not only did the Creta dominate the show, the Elite i20 and i20 Active also stole the limelight. AL: Which segment is doing well for Hyundai in Nepal? Hatchback, SUVs or sedan? Since hatchbacks constitute around 70-80% of the Nepali market, our hatchbacks are performing well in this market. Regardless, most of our models do well in their respective segment. AL: The Creta has taken the Nepalese four-wheelers market by storm. What makes Creta the best value for money proposition? The Creta is an influential global model for Hyundai in the highly lucrative compact SUV segment. It has one of the most powerful engines in this segment. It is also high on features in terms of safety as well as also in terms of transmission giving an option of manual and automatic transmission both. Likewise, the Creta is feature-rich and comes at an attractive price range as compared with the current products that are available in this segment. Also, people rate our brand highly for quality, durability and premium appeal. AL: How long is the waiting period of the Creta in Nepal? Due to high demand and the recent Terai crisis, we are unable to quote a definitive delivery timeline. However, depending on the variants, the waiting period of the Creta is approximately 2 months. AL: How has the overall response of the Elite i20 and i20 Active been in Nepal? We are overwhelmed by the enquiries we’ve been receiving from our prospective customers. With the type of enquiries we are receiving at our dealerships and with the turnout at our dealerships for test drives, we hope that both these cars will fare well in the market. What factors do Nepalese look for while buying a new vehicle? There are many things a Nepali customer looks for while buying a new car but one important factor is the value for money. Many see ‘value for money’ as being something more significant than just cost or price. The Nepali customers look for exterior and interior designs and styling that is unique from other cars in the same segment. Besides, fuel economy, after-sales service, and spare parts availability are definitely on their mind. Also, customer service is vital to the customers – from pre sale, to post sale Has the Creta’s pricing cannibalized the market for i20 Active? The higher variant of the i20 Active Diesel might have been slightly cannibalized. However, customers who opt for features are not affected by this cannibalization.
“The Creta is an influential global model for Hyundai in the highly lucrative compact SUV segment”
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
What are the biggest challenges for Hyundai in the Nepali market? The Nepali market is a competitive market and we are happy that we already have a strong foothold in here. As a key player in the Nepali automobile sector, our key strengths outweigh the challenges. Not only the purchasing power of the customer is growing at a tremendous phase, it is also going through a period of transition with a potential consumer base in many untapped sectors. Lastly, what other products are in the pipeline apart from the New Tucson? We’ve already launched four vehicles this year- the new Verna, Elite i20, i20 Active and the Creta. The new Tucson will be our final launch this year.

Nissan has always had a powerful presence in the automobile industry, a case further strengthened by its Japanese legacy. In Nepal too Nissan commanded a strong position with their Sunny during the early and mid 90s when the sedan outbreak took over the market. It did splendidly well in the market and established itself as a household name as well as a status symbol. Even today, Nissan is one of the most trusted automobile marquees in the country and a formidable name across the world. It certainly has a good stronghold on the A-segment of automobiles, but its presence in the entry level B segment in comparison isn’t as powerful. Considering the abundance of cheaper Indian alternatives for the mid economic class customers, this doesn’t come as a surprise. However, Nissan is ready to reiterate its advantages and convince the masses with their newly launched Nissan Micra Active.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE October 2015 53
Exterior The Nissan Micra Active is compact but not tiny by any sense of the word. It has good road presence and the blazing red colour of the car we were driving definitely garnered a fair deal of attention. Oval smoked headlamps sit on either side of the thin strip of black honeycomb grille. The Nissan badge sits atop the grille and a muscular slated bumper that gives is a low slung look. A strong race line bulge runs through the bonnet which blends into the rest of the body. Shaped in a roundish nature, you will begin to love the (dare we say it?) cute shape of the Micra Active. Design cues are neutral and there isn’t much extravagance to look for. Considering the fact that this gives the Nissan a more mature appeal, it isn’t really a bad thing. Stacked tail lamps stand out and the rear 3 quarters is rounded off with a bulky bumper.
Interior Step inside and you are greeted with an all black interior of the Micra Active. Two air vents sit on the middle of the dash below which is a silver console which activates the audio system. You have the choce of the CD, radio, USB or AUX. Further down are three distinct knobs that control an effective air condition system. The instrument cluster features large dials that work as the rpm and speed gauge as well as a fuel indicator. One of the best things about the Active is that you get good visibility of the bonnet from the driver’s seat which makes it a lot easier to park in tight spots. The steering wheel is comfortable and has a decent amount of bulk. It doesn’t have any controls on the steering wheel but reaching the horn isn’t an issue. The driver side is also equipped with an airbag for safety. You get a fixed headrest and power windows are controllable from the driver side door.
For a small car, it is plenty spacious. There is good legroom for the 4 passengers who can be comfortably seated in the cabin. Although the front head rests are fixed they are very comfortable.
Performance What the Nissan Micra Active lacks in extravagant aesthetics, it makes up for in driving satisfaction. The Micra Active is available with a single enginetransmission combination with the 1.2 liter-3 cylinder 68 PS-104 Nm petrol engine and a 5 speed manual gearbox. The light weight of the body allows the tiny engine to churn out a good amount of torque that propels the car with vigor. With a lower power band, the low end torque of the Nissan Micra Active gives it great drivability in the city. The cylinder engine is impeccably smooth and responds very well. Depress the clutch, shift into gear and the Micra will give you little to complain about. And upholding the Nissan reputation, the driving quality remains buttery smooth in the Micra Active. Gear shifts are crisp and seamless. The clutch is well weighted. To complement the springy nature of the Micra Active, the handling is also very responsive. It can easily weave in and out of traffic and easily make overtaking maneuvers within the city.

A weight reduction from its previous version and a detuned engine has improved the Active’s mileage
On cleaner straights the initial low end torque does wear off but it nevertheless a smooth drive. You will find yourself shifting through gears in quick succession and sailing through the tarmac. A weight reduction from its previous version and a detuned engine has improved the Active’s mileage giving it an ARAI rated fuel economy figure of 19.49 Kmpl. Also, with the reduction the lack of horsepower doesn’t make the Micra Active feel like it is bogged down.
Verdict The Nissan Micra Active might not be the most glamorous vehicle or one with an abundance of creature comforts, but that isn’t what we expected. Because it’s a Nissan we were pretty much expecting it to be a decent car, which it was. It didn’t come with bells and whistles but the build quality was very good. Amongst its competitors, its aesthetics seem to fare pretty well too. What really brought a smile to our face was when we began driving the car. It is built for the city and its spirited nature really livens up your mundane city drive. You’re not confined into a boring old car that takes you from one place to another; you’re springing into action on a product of precision Japanese engineering. In a segment that is rife with competition, the Nissan March Active’s edge in performance might give it the upper hand, despite having to cut down on the feature list and bump up the price tag.

THE FASCINATING FASCINO Are you one of those rare people who feel that Indian scooters are not stylish enough? If so, meet the Yamaha Fascino – a new stylish scooter developed by Yamaha that’s a little bit of everything. For those style-conscious buyers not wanting to spend much, but still want a decent scooter to scoot around everything, the Fascino is Yamaha’s answer. Let’s dig deeper into what makes the Fascino tick all the right boxes.

AUTOLIFE October 2015

STYLING: The Fascino grabs your attention instantly with its neo-classic design. The design is a refreshing change from the mundane designs that we usually see in Indian scooters. The front apron of the Fascino is truly attractive with the chrome-plated front grill, which has a Yamaha logo above it. The diamond-shaped turn indicators are beautifully put together on the either sides of the front apron. The rounded-triangle headlamp which is mounted on the handlebar provides the scooter a retro appearance without being a caricature. The leaf-like rear view mirrors stand out effortlessly in chrome finish. The side profile is curvaceous with a generous amount of chrome placed right on the edges of the side panels. A 3D emblem of the ‘Fascino’ along with the ‘Blue Core’ badge is mounted on both the sides. The swoopy rear section flows with curves all the way back to the tail light. The tail light which has a matt black cover over it holds a Yamaha logo on a chrome strip. A perfectly blended silver finished easy-to-hold grab bar gives the rear profile an eye-pleasing appeal. The instrumentation console gets a silver surround. The speedometer is analogue with white background and orange needles. Fuel gauge on the right is analogue too. There also exists a small Yamaha logo within the instrumentation cluster and the Fascino text in the middle just above the logo.
ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE: The Fascino gets the same 113cc engine which powers the rest of its siblings. Like the rest, the Fascino delivers 7 bhp of power at 7500 RPM with 8.1 Nm of torque at 5000 RPM. The ‘Blue Core’ engine effortlessly delivers smooth acceleration when prepping through the city traffic. The engine is responsive and has adequate power for everyday commuting. Although the sound of the engine is louder than other scooters, the sound is not harsh. There are no vibrations when in motion. Yamaha claims the best-in-class fuel efficiency figure of 66 kmpl for the Fascino.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE October 2015 65
RIDE, ERGONOMICS AND HANDLING: At 103 kg, the Fascino is the lightest of all the Yamaha scooters. The Fascino’s telescopic front forks and unit swing rear suspension provide a supple ride quality. When traversing potholes, the suspension does an adequate job and soaks up the broken road relatively well. The firm suspension setup instills you to tackle curves and broken roads with confidence. The 90/100 section MRF Nylogrip Zappers and drum brakes at both the ends hold the road well. The scooter’s wide and well contoured seat is comfortable for both the rider and the pillion even on broken roads. Ergonomically, the Fascino is very roomy despite its diminutive build. Underneath the wide seat is an underseat storage of 21 litres that can accommodate a few things, and even a full-faced helmet. Also, the new seat design is 7mm leaner around thighs to ensure easy leg reach for better control.
VERDICT: This all-new scoot from Yamaha is not only an excellent scooter but it is also quite the looker on the street. It is a distinctive looking scooter with plenty of style attached to it, which makes for quite an eye-catching little scooter. Yamaha has done a great job of blending curves and chrome into a stylish package without compromising all the solid reliability and unmatched convenience that comes with its nametag. Potential buyers looking to make a style statement now have an added option of buying a retro-styled scoot without ripping a hole through their wallets.

Would you believe us if we told you the generic name ‘Scooty’ for any women’s two-wheelers was actually derived from TVS’s ‘Scooty’ brand of scooters? And just so you know, the answer is yes! Originally conceived in 1993, the Scooty moniker have had five iterations (Scooty ES, Scooty Pep, Scooty Pep+, Scooty Teenz and Scooty Streak) till the recent update showed up. The Scooty moniker has been upgraded for 2015 with a brand-new scooter – the Scooty Zest 110. It might look very much like a stylish update of the old Scooty Streak, but the Scooty Zest is all-new underneath. It also gets loaded with a gamut of best-in-class features, right at a time, when the scooters market is expanding at such a tremendous rate. So, if you’re thinking of buying the Scooty Zest 110, this is going to be pretty much all that matters to you.
STYLING
The TVS Scooty Zest looks very compact with sharp and bold curves. TVS’s Scooty DNA is distinctly visible from its flat front apron. The dual colour front panel houses the twilight lamps and turn indicators in an inverted boomerang like shape. The front headlamp which is mounted on the handlebar has Multi Focal Reflectors (MFR) for better illumination. The leaf-shaped, body colour mirrors which complement the front apron makes the Zest stand out. The back-lit instrumentation panel houses a speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge and a TVS-trademark ‘econometer’ which helps riders get the best mileage from their scooter. A smooth, painted panel houses the switchgear on both the sides. The side profile is sharply rounded with body graphics on both the sides. Lastly, the rear is dominated by a huge LED tail light which is placed between a pair of boomerang shaped rear turn indicators. Overall, the fit and finish is excellent.
ENGINE
The Scooty Zest is powered by the same engine which is used in the Jupiter and the new Wego; however, with some changes on the gear ratios, air box and air filter. The 109.7cc, single-cylinder, CVTi air-cooled engine makes 7.9bhp at 7500 rpm and 8.7Nm at 5500 rpm in a smooth and refined fashion. According to TVS, the Zest does 0-60 kmph in just 11.1 seconds, best-in-class for this segment.
RIDE AND HANDLING
Ride and handling combine to make you feel very good indeed. The Zest is nimble and weaves through the traffic easily. Throttle response is crisp with decent acceleration. At only 97 kg, the Zest is a very light machine, which means it has a very attractive power to weight ratio (claimed bestin-class). The quirky little scooter manoeuvres through the traffic easily. The seat height for the Zest is set at a convenient 760mm, for easy reach to the ground and a relaxed riding posture.
SUSPENSION
The Zest’s telescopic front forks and double rated rear hydraulic monoshock help the TVS tackle potholes and rough road surfaces easily typically found in our riding conditions. 10-inch rims and a 1250mm wheelbase contribute to good cornering clearance and excellent stability. The anti-skid tubeless tyres do provide a decent grip without compromising the ride quality. Lastly, stopping power comes from a 110mm front and a 130mm rear drum brakes.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE October 2015 71
FEATURES
Despite its small size, the Zest has lots of storage space. TVS has maximized convenience with a 19-litres under-seat storage which is enough to accommodate a full-sized helmet, light jacket and gloves. Contemplating the convenience package are additional front bag hook, under-seat bag hook, under-seat helmet hook and a spacious front glove box. TVS has also provided an automatic choke and company patented EaZy Centre stand. The Zest also gets a textured floor board for better grip and a double stitched seat. The textured foot board is designed to give good grip in any situation. Electric starting is backed by a kicker, just in case.
VERDICT
The Zest delivers refined performance in a fuel efficient (claimed 62kmpl) and affordable package. Available in colours and priced at Rs 1, 59,900, the TVS Scooty Zest 110 will be a best buy for anybody looking for fun and affordable scooter. The Scooty Zest has it all — and as the scooters market continues to expand further, the competition will have to work hard to get anywhere near.
