It’s total two wheeler domination this month on AutoLife Magazine, and we aren’t complaining. Yes, we love our four wheelers just as much as the other guy but with the summery weather picking up stride getting in touch with the wind didn’t seem like too bad of an idea. Well, that and the opportunity to test ride the most talked about motorcycle of 2015. To the delight of all the motorcycle enthusiasts of Nepal, the Ducati Scrambler made its way into the Nepali market with a banging introduction from Turbo Motors in the vicinity of Tangal Woods. As soon as we laid eyes on the beauty we had to have a go in it. Not long after that, we got our chance and pounced on the opportunity to test ride the Icon version of the Ducati Scrambler. And it was one of the best experiences we’ve had yet. Wreaking havoc with it through Bhaktapur and past Banepa, the Scrambler thrilled us through and through. Read our photo heavy review of the Scrambler inside. For those who can’t really afford a Ducati just yet, or would prefer something less intimidating than an 800cc engine, there are two commuters to look through. One is a tried and tested winner in the form of Bajaj Discover 150F. The Disco has received a half-faring upgrade and we test to see if it still has its sensibility and practicality. The other commuter has a brand name that will rev any motorcyclist’s engines. The mini Aprilias, ETX and STX, has been officially introduced and we tested their worth. Does the Italian brand have what it takes to stand up to the reliable Indian Bajaj Discover? Find out inside and judge for yourself.

Owner’s Review When I decided that I wanted to buy a new car, I was convinced that I needed to buy a sedan that would be the best in class equipped with the latest of features at a fair price, and I must say that Skoda Rapid hasn’t failed me one bit. It’s the perfect package. I am extremely satisfied with the looks of the car. It’s a beauty and that is evident by its fine finish. The interiors of the car are excellent and the best you can find among any other brand in the market. It’s a divine mixture of sporty and classy. From ground clearance to its ability to work in the city traffic, Rapid aces in every front. The seats are very comfortable, and I bet Skoda put a lot of work to make sure that their customers have a pleasant driving experience. The handling power and performance of Rapid is great. I’ve driven other sedans too, but none of them compare to the quality Skoda delivers. You can feel the European difference which sets it apart from its counterparts; it’s a sturdy and smooth drive. Moreover, I found it a real value for money. Features like ABS, airbags, entertainment system and Bluetooth make it a forerunner in its game.
Anand Rauniar
As with the after sales service, I feel that their post sale services are quite good and satisfactory. Skoda makes sure that they deliver the services they are known for and respond well to the customer’s queries and wishes. I am pleased with them!

honda showcases
bulldog, sfa roadster & crf rally concepts at osaka SETTLE DOWN GUYS. THEY WON’T BE CHEAP, BUT STILL PRETTY BADASS. Honda has unveiled a host of concept motorcycle model at the recently concluded Osaka Motorcycle Show. We take a look at three models suitable for our lifestyle.
CRF 250 Rally The CRF250 Rally is an adventure model based on the CRF250L with styling image inspired by the CRF450 RALLY. The CRF250 Rally has the same shades as CRF450 Rally. It gets rally-styled bodywork ; a tall windscreen, twin LED headlights, a larger 10 litre fuel tank, larger diameter forks, Renthal handlebars and Mugen twin silencer and a side fairing that almost covers the engine.
bulldog
SFA Roadster
The BULLDOG is powered by a liquid-cooled 4-stroke 400cc DOHC inline twin cylinder powerful engine. The bike rides on 15-inch wheels, has a low center of gravity, 730 mm seat height and an appealing sturdy stance. Other characteristics include carrier suitable for camping-touring, high mounted exhaust and five-spoke black alloy wheels complementing scramblerlike tyres. According to Honda, the model was developed with the concept “Lovable Touring Partner” and was designed to go beyond the boundaries of conventional leisure motorcycles, to actively enjoy outdoor life. The easy to handle characteristics of the BULLDOG provides nimble ride in a wide range of environments from urban to rural areas.
Having already made an appearance in Indonesia last year, Honda has yet again showcased this concept making us believe that the company is taking this model quiet seriously. The Street-fighter style light-weight motorcycle is powered by a single cylinder 150cc engine mounted on a steel trellis frame. The concept will be targeted towards emerging markets like India and Indonesia. If launched, the SFA Roadster would take on the likes of KTM Duke and Yamaha MT-125.

6TH KCM ‘GIRLS ON WHEELS’ CONCEPT: KCM ‘Girls on Wheels’ (GOW) has now entered into its sixth iteration after five consecutive successful years. The event is mainly envisioned to empower women. Staying true to the motif, they have been conducting this event for the past years, giving women/girls who have a means of transportation an opportunity to ride their wheels, navigate through with a partner and get their ways through a fun filled treasure hunt. The event is divided into two phases: pre event and actual event. Similarly, the organizers will also be hosting a number of events and activities before and after the event. PRE-EVENT: In the pre-event, the organizers will visit government schools inside and around the outskirts of the Kathmandu valley targeting the female students once a week for four weeks. The students will be taught a series of physical and mental activities such as self-defense training and mind stretching exercises. Similarly, the organizers will also conduct outdoor activities 36

which will focus on breaking the stereotype between men and women. We will also be introducing activities in order to break the stereotype of ‘what men versus women are supposed to do’ still prevalent in parts of societies like the game of football and cricket. MAIN-EVENT: The main-event will start with a women rally and parade followed by a fun-filled treasure hunt. Each team will have two members, a rider and a navigator. The teams will have to pass through designated routes solving different clues and puzzles. There will be around 6-10 checkpoints within the designated route. Each checkpoint will have some task to be accomplished by each team. As this is a treasure hunt, the participants will be judged on the basis of both task done and the time of accomplishment. A clue book containing a certain feasible route will be provided.

It’s always exciting to see world renowned brands opening up showrooms in Nepal, for the same reason we were on the edge of our seats when J & J Motors announced their introduction of Aprilia back a few months ago. Aprilia is an Italian motorcycle brand under Piaggio that has enjoyed major success in the racing world. When they finally rolled out their first offerings, we were greeted with two mini Aprilias: The ETX and the STX. At first glance, they didn’t do enough to uphold the Aprilia name. However, we were told the ETX and STX were based on the Aprilia Dorsoduro and Shiver, claims that were difficult to refute as they held striking resemblance to the bigger Aprilias. So what we had in front of us were two small motorcycles that claimed to be descendants of two beasts from one of the best names in the motorcycle industry. Aprilia did make a name for itself in the global motorcycling standards despite being a small company, so it was clear that size was not the best medium of judgment. Also, we came to learn that these Aprilias were branded differently
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

in different regions of the world. In some parts, like Pakistan, it is branded as Derbi while we get them as Aprilia. The bike seems to be a collaboration between Piaggio and Zhongshen AutoParts. Because Aprilia and Derbi are owned by Piaggio they get to brand the bike differently. Whatever the case, we had two Aprilias on our hand (on paper at least). So we went off to the test ride. STYLING: STX 150: The STX is based on the naked stylings of the Aprilia Shiver. While the Shiver comes off as an intimidating beast, the STX is less awe inspiring but does hold a strong similarity. Its street fighter styling features large headlights with dual reflectors accentuated with a short visor. The deceptively sized tank that has an 18 liter capacity is sculpted with subtlety but looks good. Two piece handlebars give the naked styling a sporty look.
44
AUTOLIFE Mar/April 2015
Its LCD instrument panel displays all the information you need such as the speedometer, fuel gauge and gear shift with an analogue display for the rpm meter. Indicator signs and the neutral light aren’t properly visible when riding under the sun which can be slightly annoying. Riders will also have to get used to the side stand automatically springing back to its rightful place once you get the motorcycle upright. Seats are very comfortable and look very fitting to the entire look of the STX. Chunky grab rails make the entire appearance of the STX more masculine. An LED light cluster in the rear is also a very stylish touch. ETX150: The ETX on the other hand has enduro-type styling with duckbill front fenders that it largely carries from Aprilia’s old ETX models. The ETX tag was originally adopted by Aprilia in the pre-Piaggio era when it offered the ETX125, ETX350 and ETX650. But where the old Aprilia ETXs had an off-road bike look, the
new ETX is basically a road bike with higher handlebars with plastic hand guards and knobbly tires wrapped around 17-inch spoked wheels. The ETX’s LCD instrumentation panel which displays all the neededinformation is protected by a neat black visor. Matching the profile is a high handlebar with plastic hand guards. Hand guards are soft to the touch and are of decent quality, but are not perfectly engageable when using the clutch lever. Mirrors could have worked well to provide a broad view of the rear traffic. Matching the enduro-profile is an 18-litre fuel tank which according to Aprilia is healthy for an enduro style bike. Moving on, the rear profile is guarded by the same sleek profile from the STX providing a balanced fit to its Enduro profile. The ETX’s side panels, seat and tail regions are neatly sculpted, and sport a noticeable appearance. Overall, the styling is different from every other commuter bike available in Nepal, and we liked it.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
THE STX IS BASED ON THE NAKED STYLINGS OF THE APRILIA SHIVER. WHILE THE SHIVER COMES OFF AS AN INTIMIDATING BEAST, THE STX IS LESS AWE INSPIRING BUT DOES HOLD A STRONG SIMILARITY.

AUTOLIFE Mar/April 2015 45
PERFORMANCE: STX 150: The 150cc engine from the Italian manufacturers is an average performer on the road. Although the power output won’t take you off guard it is capable enough to comfortably lug you through traffic. And to be completely honest, this is what the STX was bred for. It is a city slicker in every sense of the word. If you expect it to appease your speed demon, you’re on the wrong motorcycle. The seating position is fairly comfortable and you won’t have any complains about maneuverability in traffic. Bumps and jolts, which are aplenty on our roads, don’t really cause too much of a problem for the STX. Gear shifts, though, could have been smoother. Nevertheless, finding the neutral is a fun game you can indulge in when you’re stuck in traffic. Braking is efficient and provides
46
AUTOLIFE Mar/April 2015
adequate stopping power for the light motorcycle. ETX 150: The ETX is powered by the single cylinder, air-cooled, two-valve, fourstroke motor borrowed from the STX. The hard revving but flexible engine maintains decent power over a fairly wide rpm range. The ETX 150 is petite and handles well in the city, and can also perform well on the trails if needed, due to its lightweight ergonomics. Braking duty is carried out by a 260mm wave design disc with a twin piston caliper upfront and a 104mm drum brake at the back. The brakes work well to provide a decent stoppage when called for. We get pretty decent grips from the ETX with no worries about the knobbly tires giving up on us. One set-back was the spring-loaded retractable side-stand. The funny thing is you have to push it all the way down, and then hold the stand with
your toe as you lean the bike over to rest on it. Overall, the ride quality is good and feels well put making the rider and pillion feel comfortable. CHASSIS & SUSPENSION: The STX’s chassis is a single spar wielded steel with pressed steel reinforcements. Front suspensions are 37mm hydraulic forks with 240mm double piston disc brakes while the rear suspension is undertaken by 2 hydraulic shock absorbers with separate canisters and adjustable spring load. Similarly, The ETX’s suspension duty is carried out by Upside down 35mm hydraulic forks up front, which absorb the bumps on our road well. At rear, Aprilia provides 2 Hydraulic shock absorbers with separate canisters and adjustable spring preload that also absorbs any situation you can throw it at.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
VERDICT: While the STX and ETX series are a good effort from Aprilia, they remain way off from their Indian counterparts. The ‘Aprilia’ name-tag might rope in some admirers; but performance and build quality are not up to par with the current breed of Indian motorcycles. Aprilia has also pegged both these bikes at an astounding premium over their rivals something its generic nature will have a hard time justifying. Nevertheless, the Aprilias are decent commuters that have good aesthetic appeal. It isn’t the most powerful or the most nimble motorcycle on the road, but you’re not looking for those capabilities when it comes to commuter motorcycles. Then again, with the brand name Aprilia and a fitting price tag to go along with it, those capabilities could have found its way onto the Aprilias.

Good! After being one of the most awaited motorcycles of 2015, the Ducati Scrambler had set our hopes high. Ducati put fears to rest when they unveiled their offering at the Intermot show in Germany. “A contemporary bike that expresses the pure essence of motorcycling,” the Ducati Scrambler is a different breed. And it doesn’t look like something you’d expect from the normally meticulous Italian makers, but not in a bad way of course. That’s because Scrambler’s heritage goes back to the early 1960s when Berliner Motor Corporation-Ducati’s USA importers at the time-conceived the original (Ducati) Scrambler for the USA market. The first Scrambler went into production in 1962 and was modified uninterruptedly until 1968, when the real “long engine cover” Scramblers appeared, followed by the 250 and 350 versions and, in 1969, the 450. The first Scrambler model is universally acknowledged as the meeting point between the American and European schools of motorcycling. Its functionality, though, stems from the scramble races of 1920’s England, where riders raced from one point to the other favoring speed over rules. It was pretty simple: get from start to finish in the quickest way possible over whatever terrain that lay before you. In order to comply with the demands of these races, riders had to convert their commercial everyday motorcycles into grass churning, dirt hungry, raw machines that could handle anything thrown their way. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but abrupt and unforeseen changes in terrain seem to hold uncanny resemblance to our very own roads. So, on paper, this should be the most suitable Ducati for our roads? Ducati claims that their new machine isn’t only that, but a new brand. So, it’s not a Ducati Scrambler, but a Scrambler Ducati. New brand or not, we got our hands on the Icon- the most vanilla of the 4 offerings of the Scrambler- and ripped through the Capital.

AUTOLIFE Mar/April 2015 51
STYLING The Icon is a beautiful fusion of retro styling and modern engineering which gives the traditional bikes of the 70’s a present-day touch. A few of the style components stay true to its original, such as the die-cast aluminium of the rear swingarm and the steel of the teardrop tank and frame. These have been integrated with modern but simplistic parts including LEDs around the central bulb of a conventionally round headlight, an LCD instrument that we simply loved. Although yellow might be the favorite color, the one we got in Ducati Red seemed to turn just as many heads. The black twin spar steel trellis frame harnesses the dark L-twin air-cooled 803cc engine. Upfront it has a 10-spoke aluminum 18-inch wheel while the rear sports a 17-inch wheel shod with Pirelli MT60 tires made exclusively for the Scrambler. The front suspension is an inverted 41mm fork from Kayaba, while a banana-shaped aluminum swingarm

ALTHOUGH YELLOW MIGHT BE THE FAVORITE COLOR, THE ONE WE GOT IN DUCATI RED SEEMED TO TURN JUST AS MANY HEADS. directly actuates a cantilevered Kayaba shock absorber in back. A classic, single, round, fully digital gauge displays speed on top and rpm on the bottom. Other displays include two trip odometers, standard odometer, trip fuel indicator, ambient temperature, maintenance reminders, time, and warning lights for fuel reserve and ABS. Other lights are for oil pressure, high beam, neutral, blinkers, and warnings for redline. To enforce the stopping capabilities, the duties are put on the shoulders of a single 330mm brake rotor, teamed with a radial-mount four-piston caliper up front. In the back, the task is undertaken by a 245mm disc clamped by a singlepiston floating caliper. Braking is by Brembo, which should put the riders’ mind at ease. The Icon also features a wide steel handlebar and plush low seating for a comfortable ride. Under the seat you will find some space for storage and a USB port for your convenience. PERFORMANCE When it comes to high caliber engines dedicated to propelling a machine on two wheels, it always starts out with a facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE Mar/April 2015 53
mix of emotions: the anticipation when you straddle the machine, the surging rush of excitement once you start the engine and then the adrenaline that pumps through your veins when you shift into gear and unleash the unbridled power. Along with the excitement comes a fair amount of intimidation; albeit a welcome intimidation that you get when you go from knot to 60 in under 5 seconds. However, with the Scrambler, you don’t have to keep your butt clenched for as hard for as long. Of course that does not mean that it fails to exhilarate the rider. The Icon has a wide up-swept single piece bar and a low wide seat which provides you with an upright riding position but a comfortable ride. Point it to the horizon and you can watch the kilometers roll without having to skimp on the comfort of the ride. Now, before you take the Scrambler for a lethargic kilometer muncher, remember: it hails from an ancestry

AUTOLIFE Mar/April 2015

HOWEVER, WITH THE SCRAMBLER, YOU DON’T HAVE TO KEEP YOUR BUTT CLENCHED FOR AS HARD FOR AS LONG.
of fast, ready-for-anything machines. Its shared engine is a detuned version of the SOHC, 90-degree desmo unit from the discontinued Monster 796, its maximum output reduced from 87 to 75bhp by changes including new camshafts and exhaust system. Push the revs and the engine comes to life to prove its competence. On highway straights the Scrambler picks up pace fast with a crisp throttle that can feel sharp on initial openings, so you have to be sure you maintain control. It doesn’t belt like a mean loud monster but it is quick to reassure its position as a serious contender by planting itself on the ground and bolting for the horizon. Shove your shoulder into corners and the Pirelli tires allow you to kiss the apex and follow through without much worry. And it is unbelievably fun and easy to maneuver. As good as it is at prancing from point to point, its ability to change directions on command is equally good. It feels surefooted and nimble on its feet, a talent it showed off aplenty when we lugged it through the tight alleys of Bhaktapur. However, brick paved roads, or any uneven surface for that matter, is not the Scrambler’s home ground. There
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE Mar/April 2015 55
is a considerable amount of vibration and it really takes a toll on the arms and body after a while. Stopping power is very reassuring, too, due largely to the big, ABS-equipped single front disc and its four-piston Brembo radial caliper. The Scrambler proved good for long journeys, quick blinding sprints, slaloming through traffic, carving tight corners and making long sweeping corners. In its heart, the Scrambler was built to take anything that is thrown its way. To make sure it stood up to the task, we tested its poise on light-medium off road tracks and it passed with flying colours. It feels at home slipping and sliding through lose dirt and does not lose composure over tougher off road stretches either.
VERDICT Ducati have made the Scrambler anything but fussy. It has no rideby-wire fuelling, alternative power modes or traction control. Yes, serious motorcycle aficionados might prefer something with more horsepower and additional accouterments, but for anyone who just loves riding a motorcycle, the Ducati Scrambler fits the bill. It is a fun and easy bike to ride which is built for all terrain fun. If you fancy a ride across the country, you can get on the Scrambler ride it through the East to West highway and not feel like you’ve been through an endurance test from hell. It’ll be more like the refreshing and meditational tour you wanted it to be. Everything about the Scrambler is simple but brilliant. It retains the old school feel without compromising on the modern aesthetics and necessities. Because it is such an easy motorcycle to ride, it is perfect for nervous big bike beginners. But it is also an all-rounder that easily settles into any motorcyclist’s hearts. The Icon is the basic of the four offerings that the Scrambler comes in. And it won’t sear a hole as big in your wallet as other Ducatis would. When you take all things into consideration, it might even be as practical as a Ducati can get for our roads.

Anything with wheels and capacity for propulsion over land tickles our fancy, even this peculiar scooter like contraption called the Segway. The segway is a twowheel, self balancing, battery powered electric vehicle and is the newest thing on wheels to come into Nepal. We’re not the most environmentally conscious bunch, because we prefer our machines to take us from a dead stop to past the speed limit in under 10 seconds. However, that means that we will have to pay our dues to Mother Nature eventually. News of the segway making its way to Nepal was the perfect opportunity for us to repent to the environmental gods as well as cut down on our carbon footprint. After briefly contemplating over and deciding against the idea of dressing up as an American Mall cop, we headed to the new building of AutoLand in Teku to try out the electric transporter.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
This Segway wasn’t your regular Segway, it was a Leadway. A product of Shenzhen Rilla group, the Leadway is the self balancing scooter that has two models: namely off road and urban model. We were handed the urban version which was smaller in size and looked less robust. There doesn’t seem to be a lot going on with the Leadway and seemed simple enough to control. The base between the two wheels had a simple solitary switch that turned on the machine and a green lit display showed the battery level. Not too intimidated by the appearance, we casually got on it to go for a spin. It turns out it isn’t as simple as it appears to look. Although it is a “self balancing” scooter, finding our bearings on the Leadway took a few minutes; the first of which we were violently teetering atop it like a creatine infused drunkard. Once we settled in, it was just a matter of leaning forward
AUTOLIFE Mar/April 2015 61
or backwards and shifting the handle to change direction. Soon enough, we were awed by the technology that balanced the upright scooter and made it possible to maneuver it around. The creator (Dean Kamen) had the human body in mind when this was designed. If a person stands up and leans forward to a certain extent, his brain knows he is out of balance because fluid in the inner ear shifts. This triggers him to put his leg forward and stop the fall. If he keeps leaning forward, his brain will keep putting his legs forward to kee¬p him upright. Instead of falling, the person walks forward, one step at a time. The Leadway does pretty much the same thing, except it has wheels instead of legs, a motor instead of muscles, a collection of microprocessors instead of a brain and a set of sophisticated tilt sensors instead of an inner-ear balancing system. Like the brain, the Leadway knows when you are leaning forward. To maintain balance, it turns the wheels at just the right speed, so you move forward. The amplitude of turning of two-wheeled balanced scooter is calculated automatically according to the speed, the higher the speed, the smaller the amplitude will be which ensures safety. Nevertheless, try to make a sharp turn at higher speeds and your heart will jump 62
AUTOLIFE Mar/April 2015
into your throat as you lose balance momentarily. Before we knew it, we were actually having fun on this electric mechanism on wheels. It didn’t go really fast, but it made up for it with its uniqueness. However, rough roads aren’t its foray and you will feel the lack of suspension. On the shiny tiles of the new AutoLand building though, it seemed right at home. That brings us to the practicality of this machine. The Urban model of the Leadway is the ideal partner for the patrolman, duty guards and security personnel that need patrolling back and forth within large spaces. It is also suitable for government office buildings, Science Park, large scale enterprises and factories, hospitals as well as the airport, large exhibition halls, entertainment venues and other large parks. As Mr. Lok Rajbhandari, __________, suggested its utility in locations such as Lumbini could be useful. It might not be the most functional product out there, but it sure is a fun thing to ride. Best of all, it is extremely environment friendly. Glad to have done our part in saving the planet, we now wait till we see it in Bhatbhateni and Lumbini.

The Discover family has been a tried and tested workhorse in Bajaj’s lineage. The Discover series has completed more than a decade since it was born at Bajaj Auto. Since then, the series has seen many styling upgrades as well as a new engine. Moreover, Bajaj is leaving no stone unturned when it comes to launching new products with stylish looks, better performance and economical mileage. So, Can the swanky Discover 150F help Bajaj make another foothold in the 150cc motorcycle segment? We find out.

STYLING AND INSTRUMENTS: Bajaj has ditched the Discover’s plain-jane look to make the 150F a completely new product. The stubby half fairing will remind you of the Pulsar 220. This stylish half- fairing is surely an eye-catcher because it provides a sporty look to the bike. The half-fairing is neatly integrated with the redesigned 10-litre fueltank of the bike. The half-fairing houses digital-analog instrumentation panel. The stylish instrumentation panel houses both digital display and analog dials. The digital LCD display unit displays odometer, trip-meter, fuel-gauge and clock on board. Other elements on the dashboard include blinkers indicator, Headlight indicator, neutral light and battery indicator which are placed around the speedometer smartly. The digital meter also provides timely service alerts, now that’s something. However, the quality of the switchgear is a let-down and there is no engine kill switch either. The Discover 150F’s DC headlamps provide a steady beam of light and it doesn’t flicker even when the engine is idle or at slow speeds. The tail light which comes with LED lights is visible even from a distance. The 10-spoke alloy wheels provide a fresh appeal to the bike. Overall, Bajaj has successfully provided a premium feel to the bike. ERGONOMICS: The seating position is upright with low set foot pegs which are placed in the middle section. The handlebar with weight balancers compliments the upright seating position providing a relaxed riding stance. The bike has the longest wheelbase (1305mm) in its category which complements its ergonomically designed seat profile making it comfortable for both the rider and the pillion. Suspension duty is carried out by telescopic forks

up front, which absorb the bumps on the road well. The rear comes with Nitrogen filled Nitrox Mono-shock Suspension which provides a smoother and more consistent ride. Unlike the conventional oil-filled suspensions, the Nitrox suspension’s pressurized gas (nitrogen) prevents foaming of hydraulic oil that run the risk of frothing or bubble-formation resulting in more stable and consistent performance. This nitrogen gas also helps in absorbing the road undulations and provides a smooth ride for both the rider and the pillion. That combined with a supple ride quality make the Discover 150F a comfortable bike. PERFORMANCE & RIDE QUALITY: The Discover 150F has a bigger heart; a 144.8 cc motor which produces 14.3 bhp of power @ 8500 rpm and a peak torque of 12.7 Nm@ 6500 rpm. The peak power is enough for this segment. You may find the power slightly higher than other motorcycles from the same class. Bajaj has squeezed out more power from the mill without sacrificing the economy. While the engine refinement has improved over the early Discover models, there are still some vibrations, particularly the engine does feel grunty when revved hard at the top end in any gear. Actually, you can feel quite a few vibrations through the pegs and handlebars, but, if ridden sanely, that doesn’t make the bike jerky. The 240 mm front Petal disc brake and 130 mm rear drum brakes are super responsive and efficient providing maximum braking force. This coupled with “MRF Nylogrip Zapper” unidirectional tubeless tyres on both ends stick to the ground on all road-conditions. The grippy MRF tyres instill confidence while riding the motorcycle.

VERDICT: Bajaj’s news Discover 150F improves on its predecessor in every way. The bike fits well in the proposition of someone looking for a reasonably priced but stylish commuter bike. The Discover 150F might have ticked most of the right boxes but will it be able to make its mark on the resurgent 150 cc market, we’ll watch it closely. Value-for-money pricetag? Yes!

TATA Motors
EYES A BIG SLICE OF THE NEPALESE MARKET Hemant Puranik, Area Manager – Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh (Passenger Vehicles – International Business), on how Tata Motors is working on building profitability in a difficult market
“I do not want to set a volume expectation, but we are really excited to be in the segment where our presence was not significant”, says Hemant Puranik referring to the Zest which has already created a buzz in the Nepalese market. The Zest which is the first example of the ‘HORIZONEXT’ strategy, an industry-wide productfocused initiative undertaken by Tata Motors to improve their products, has resurrected the company back into the passenger car segment. Even though Tata Motors is among the top three players in the Nepali market, it has yet to gain a significant share in the hatchback or sedan segment. “Obviously, you can’t be satisfied if you’re stagnant in one position. So we’re always looking to strengthen our position.”, says Puranik before highlighting his plans for the Nepali market. Excerpts: 68

AL: You are the Area Manager of Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh in the Passenger Vehicles segment for Tata Motors. How do you manage your time? HP: In today’s fast-paced world, juggling work and your personal life demands a greater commitment before it negatively affects your health and job performance. Meeting expectations of friends, company, colleagues and family is a huge pressure because with great title comes greater responsibility. I feel that time management is an oxymoron. We should set our priorities straight because we cannot control time. Hence, I plan early with my priorities in mind so that I can manage the show later. Another way is to build a dependable and reliable team, keep on honoring their skills and delegate your skills to them. Like Donald Trump said, “Learn from your past, plan for you future and focus on your present.” AL: Which segment is doing well for Tata Motors in Nepal? Hatchback, UVs or Sedan? HP: We have had many achievements in the Nepalese market, but I’d like to focus on some of the more recent milestones we’ve achieved. Tata Sumo was the single largest selling name plate for the previous financial year. Similarly, our SUV Safari Storme was used as an escort vehicle for all Heads of State during the recent SAARC summit. This alone explains our presence in the utility vehicles segment. However, we lack a strong foothold in the sedan and hatchback segment and that is all changing with our new car- the Zest. AL: Comparatively, sedans are not doing well in the Nepali market. What is your strategy in such adverse conditions? HP: Although only 0.05% of the total Nepali population owns a car, Nepal has been a key market for us and it has been our endeavor to bring class-leading products for the consumers in this country. We are trying to change the way a customer looks at a sedan because customers often need to be made aware of what is being offered with that sedan. We are looking forward to introduce several new products to consolidate this opposition. AL: Rival companies like Hyundai and Suzuki are very aggressive in the Nepali market. How is the company seeing this? HP: Well, I can’t share all the strategies facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
now; but it’s an intense battle ground and we are all armed to win the competition. We are always busy in making strategies to overcome our rivals. Though the market itself is relatively small, it has a huge potential for our products to grow. What I can share is that our ambition is to launch two new products every year in the Nepali market. With this strategy, we should be able to witness a significant growth from the market and overtake our competitors. AL: What are you expectations from the Nepali market? HP: As far as our expectations are concerned, we are excited to be back in the passenger car segment where our presence was previously not significant. We are confident that this market is all set to grow. The recently launched Zest has already created a buzz in the market. We are also adamant that with the kind of products that we will be bringing in the market in the next few years, Tata Motors will be able to successfully offer Nepali customers products that they have never seen or experienced before. Our ambition is to launch two new products every year at least for the next 5 years. AL: What’s your biggest challenge in the Nepali market? HP: Although we are the market-leader in the commercial vehicles segment, we fall behind in terms of passenger car segment. Hence, our biggest challenge in the Nepali market is to increase the market share of our sedan and hatchback. We are already working hard to enhance our share in the passenger cars segment and it’s all changing with the Zest. AL: From your experience in Nepal, what factors do the Nepali customers look for while buying a car? HP: As per our 15 years’ experience in Nepal, the Nepali customers are very much aware of what is happening in the global arena. They are extremely open to the concept of value, state-of-the-art products and they are ready to accept these products even if they have to pay a little more. AL: Can you highlight Tata Motors’ commitment towards Corporate Social Responsibility? HP: At Tata Motors, we recognize that social and economic activities are

interconnected. The core purpose of the Tata Group is to improve the life of the communities it serves globally, through long-term value creation based on leadership with trust. Tata Motors is committed to improve the communities by working on four thrust areas – employability, education, health and environment. In Nepal, we are active on the CSR front with our distributor Sipradi Trading Pvt Ltd. I would like to mention that we have taken major steps towards environment and development of underprivileged kids by sponsoring scholarships in the field of Art and Culture. With the foundation of its rich heritage, Tata Motors today is working for a bright future for the underprivileged. AL: One last question, what prompted you to join TATA Motors? And at what position did you start in TATA Motors? HP: I joined Tata Motors because it is India’s largest automobile company with global footprints through various subsidiaries and associate companies. Tata Motors is a leader in commercial vehicles in India and among the top in passenger vehicles with winning products in the compact, mid-size car and utility vehicle segments. Tata Motors, also listed in the New York Stock Exchange, has operations in the UK, South Korea, Thailand, South Africa and Indonesia. Among them is Jaguar Land Rover (two iconic British brands) and Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company (South Korea’s second largest truck maker). Similarly, the company’s commercial and passenger vehicles are already being marketed in several countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia, South America, CIS and Russia. I started as a senior engineer in the company in the year 1987, before climbing up the hierarchy. AUTOLIFE Mar/April 2015 69

caught our eyes and lit them up. Porsche: a brand synonymous with precision German engineering, high performance and beautifully built cars had advertised their search for investors in Nepal. This means that we might actually see a bright showroom somewhere in the city with 911s and Carreras basking under spotlights. Now before you get ahead of yourself (and to keep ourselves grounded as well) we would like to inform you that nothing has been finalized yet. But

it does make us pray for it that much harder. Established at first as a consulting and development company by Dr. Ing. Ferdinand Porsche in 1931, Porsche SE has since become synonymous with luxurious sports cars as well as cutting edge technology. The Porsche name has become synonymous with sports cars and racecars because that is what company founders Ferdinand Porsche and his son Ferdinand ("Ferry") set out to build when they first set up shop with 200 workers in 1948. Situated in downtown Stuttgart, Porsche's first contract of developing a people's car, a Volkswagen, appointed by the German government. The result was one of the most famous cars in history, one of the best sold and one of the most easily recognizable out there, the Beetle. Many features of the Beetle would find their place on the first ever Porsche, the 64, developed in 1939. The senior Porsche, whose engineering experience included Daimler-Benz, established an

independent design and engineering firm in 1931 and designed the Volkswagen Beetle. He brought a half-century of experience with innovation, from a turn-of-thecentury four-wheel drive gasoline/ electric hybrid vehicle to the virtually unbeatable Auto Union Grand Prix cars of the 1930s. The younger Porsche helped grow the new company and was instrumental in designing the first Porsche sportscar, the 356. Though sporting just 40 horsepower from a rear-mounted, slightly soupedup Beetle engine, the first Porsche quickly made its mark with agile handling, as well as attributes almost unknown among sportscars of the day — comfort and reliability. The success of the 356 and the death of Ferdinand Porsche in 1951 gave Ferry the confidence to follow in his father's footsteps and continue designing cars. One of his most famous designs was the Spyder 550, a car that would prove very successful in races. Porsche introduced its own engines in the mid-1950s, along with more powerful versions of the 356. After AUTOLIFE Mar/April 2015 71
the 356 came a true legend among modern automobiles, the Porsche 911. Porsche was going to change its status in 1972 from a limited partnership to a public limited company, which meant that now Porsche would be run by a board of directors supervised by family members. In 1974, at the Paris Auto Show, Porsche unveiled the new 911 Turbo, with exhaust turbocharger and pressure regulator. The Porsche 911, after over three decades of evolution, became a new 911 Carrera in 1999. The lineage includes 911 S (1967), the 911 Turbo (1974 [1976 in the U.S.]), the first 911 Cabriolet (1983) and the first allwheel drive 911 Carrera 4 (1990). Porsche introduced a series of frontengine models in the 1970s, starting with the four-cylinder 924 (1976) and the unrelated 928 powered by the company’s first V-8 engine (1978). From the 924 sprang the more powerful and sophisticated 944 and 944 Turbo, and finally the 968 in the early ‘90s. Porsche retired both the 968 and 928 in 1995 to focus on development of the rear-engine 72

911 and mid-engine Boxster. The Boxter model was introduced in 1996 after 3 and a half years of development. That same year, Porsche celebrated 1million units being produced. Two years later, Ferry Porsche died at the age of 88 but the company moved on and had a great season at Le Mans with the 911 GT1, coming in first and second. This was going to be only the beginning for Porsche, which continued with the very sporty and high-performance models Boxster S and the Carrera GT in 2000. In 2002 Porsche entered the SUV market with the unconventional Cayenne and its later versions, the Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S. On February 4 2008 in the 200,000th Porsche Cayenne rolled proudly off the assembly line in Leipzig, Germany. The model was a Cayenne GTS, which was unveiled that month at the Chicago Auto Show and launched that spring. 2009 October saw the launch of the Porsche Panamera, a four door sports sedan. In 2006 it won the most prestigious automobile brand for over 70 years of excellence and dedication which speaks for itself. On 18th January 2015, FORE (Friends of Royal Enfields) gathered with anticipation at Himalayan Enfielders workshop for their 4th ‘Rider Mania’ destined for Chandigarh. While Kathmandu was stirring from its slumber, riders savoured their farewell hugs for the next three weeks and collectively ripped through and out of Kathmandu via Mahendranagar, far west of Nepal. Fast forward 2 days, we entered Banbasa and rode past countless horse carriages in search of Gurudwara Sri Nanakmatta Sahib where our altruistic Sikh brethrens provided free accommodations and meals. is not an option in this part of India and gurudwaras exist to preach and practice it. When we left the next morning, our 9 bullets strong roared to life and disrupted their fragile and treasured serenity. I prayed desperately to leave the consecrated grounds soonest possible so as to restore their tranquility. On the evening of the 21st, we reached Rishikesh. Failing to find a camping spot in the drizzle we crash-landed into a hotel. Sleeping was a secondary activity so we rose early to walk around Rishikesh. Google informed me that Rishikesh was the birthplace of yoga and all things spiritual but I was on the lookout for the ashram where
the Beatles had stayed. The following day we were headed to Haridwar to earn our salvations by dipping in the Ganges River. If it wasn’t little girls coaxing us to dot our foreheads for Rs10, it was the devotees requesting donations or payments for performing religious services that guaranteed one’s ascension to heaven. The only currency that was not accepted was the ‘no’ currency. Turning down any godly service, be it buying a plastic container for ganga jal or a plastic floor mat to watch the evening aarti, radiated irreligiousity and one was to expect indignant visages which disapprovingly judged one’s take on piety. Unfortunately, ‘no’ was the only currency I held so I was automatically on the

opposite side of the supernatural spectrum and my only potential ally was a profane young man selling his noisy plastic toys during the evening aarti. Nevertheless I did not leave empty-handed. I learnt that the Ganges River was very holy and we had about 300km to Kikar lodge where Riders Mania 2015 was to be hosted by the Road Survivors. The latter information proved true. Briefly, Rider Mania (RM) is an annual event hosted by Brotherhood of Bulleteers Motorcycling Consortium member clubs (BOBMC) in India. Royal Enfield motorcycle owners might be from different clubs, states and speak different languages but share the same riding passion. Present at the event were many of our old and faithful brothers on bullets such as the Bisons, Indie Thumpers, Madras Bulls, Aizwal Thunders, Wolfe Pack and Wanderlust. Wikipedia will also inform you that FORE Nepal was (still is) the only foreign club participating so far. The long stretch of road which led us to our event at Chandigarh was decorated with advertisements of elite schools and families of monkeys. While I pondered if the universe was trying to send me a message, my drowsy pilot stopped to refresh himself. As a result, we lost our group for just 3 hours. On the plus side, both of us were romantically lost in silent panic. We registered ourselves at the event close to midnight, no thanks to Kikar Lodge’s location. It was nestled so deep into the forest, I was convinced our whole group was lost this time. It was extremely cold so we wasted some time hunting for a bar before we pitched our tents and threw ourselves in. 24th began with a striking sunshine, wolfing on anything edible (food was aplenty), finding old friends and making new ones. The next afternoon some of us participated in ‘burnout’, dirt-bike racing and beerfacebook.com/AutolifeNepal
guzzling competitions. We were interviewed by Punjab TV for whom we were at our best sober selves for 2 whole minutes. FORE also pitched in ‘Chalo Nepal 2017’ during the meeting to vote for a club to host RM 2016. We dared to host above 2000 riders and let them storm through our borders well before RM 2016 could even be determined. I bought a raffle ticket with hopes of winning the yellow Enfield gleaming on the stage but I should have spent that money on chicken tandoori, at least I’d have something. On the 26th morning, we packed up for Amritsar and its enchanting Golden Temple. We had certainly built an emerald temple at our campsite with countless empty beer bottles. As we bade Rider Maniacs goodbye, they reciprocated ‘Chalo Nepal 2017!’ In the wee hours of 27th January, we rode into Amritsar. The entrance to the Golden Temple was radiating just a stone’s throw away so was vegetarian McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and Subway. We saw volunteers of all ages cleaning the streets before dawn settled while we took the earliest opportunity to visit the Golden Temple. All roles and responsibilities, from the young guards outside to the highest custodian of the temple, performed their duties in an impressively systematic manner. There were no religious salesmen vulturing tourists and the devotees moved in an orderly fashion. Those who sat outside the Golden Temple to meditate did so without blocking the traffic and signs were put up advising people against throwing flowers or any form of offerings into the water surrounding the temple. The Sikhs were certainly of one spirit. We were not stared at awkwardly or treated differently probably because Sikhs are strictly taught not to discriminate. My fascination with Sikhs has grown ever since, so much so that I visited the temple thrice
despite the painfully cold marble floor. I borrowed a handful of free literatures about Sikhism and the founder of Sikhism which I read throughout the remainder of the ride. We went about town to drink the tastiest lassi, considered buying rifles which were sold like fish in the market and ate Sikh dessert before calling it a night. Early to bed, early to rise makes a rider healthy, less rich and excited for his next destination. We took the opportunity to rest our bikes AUTOLIFE Mar/April 2015 75
and hire a jeep to Wagah Border the next afternoon to witness an elaborate flag ceremony between India and Pakistan. It is conducted in unity by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) and Pakistan Rangers (PR) two hours before sunset daily. On the evening of 28th January we spent our night at an extraordinarily hospitable dhaba at Mandi Khuian after uncountable breakdowns. Plural, yes. Residents along this route, Ganganagar, were quick to offer assistance when others could
only offer stares. People in this vicinity seem principled, at least enough to keep a belonging we discovered missing in the morning. I dearly hoped every rest stop would be as good or better. While travelling to Bikaner, the cows and bulls which lined the sides of the road occasionally developed mad fits causing them to charge at noisy riders. We learnt to slow down where possible zombie-herds were present. I noticed that roads which trucks frequented developed badly peeled tarmacs so much so that our brains, coccyxs and metals were rattling constantly. The bullet gods must have felt sorry for us that they mercifully kept us from breaking down the whole of next day. We arrived at Sri Karni Dharmasala, Deshnok seeking shelter. We were 5 minutes away from the popular ratinfested temple. A handful of us entered the irking temple the next morning well-warned that killing Ganesh’s revered best friend(s), intentionally or otherwise, qualified us for restitution with a bar of silver. Breakfast tasted bland or the thought of rats instantly numbed my taste buds. Whatever the reason, Jodhpur was waiting and we let it wait because less than 50km out, we suffered a more complicated mechanical failure. We almost called it a night at a certain dhaba that looked like an assembly ground of kidney robbers. God blessed our instincts and we came upon a friendlier one with rooms, fenced lawns, very young scholars moonlighting as dad’s little elves. They had charpoys under the starry night. Charpoys are one ingenious back-relieving beds found in most dhabas. We were offered private rooms but I chose the charpoy. Our slow and crawling ride the following morning saw camels and donkeys which were primary sources of transportation. Jodhpur, Rajasthan is the home of one of the largest forts. It exhibits the heritage of the Rathores in arms, costumes, paintings and decorated period rooms including selection of old royal palanquins, including a domed gilt Mahadol palanquin won in a battle from the Governor of Gujarat in 1730. We set up camp at a dhaba next to it so that the riders could pay homage to Om Banna a.k.a. Om Singh Rathore who struck a tree with his Enfield after imbibing great quantities of alcohol. He died at the spot where a temple now stands erected, accompanied by that particular tree ornamented with offerings and his bike rests within a glass display. relieved that I could relieve my bowels anytime without Om Banna’s ghost lingering while my bottoms were exposed to the world. Yes, open defecation. On the 1st of February, we were on the Jaipur-Ajmer Highway in order to reach the Pink City, Jaipur. We rode as far as we could before calling it a night at a hotel. The following day, we had to be in Jaipur, by hook or by crook, so our highly disciplined Captain rapped at every door to get us up and moving. Words of encouragement included ‘Hot shower, guys!’ and ‘Jaipur’. Since we were not very far from Jaipur, we reached our destination while there was light in the sky. A good friend of FORE arranged a vacant home with ample camping space. It was a good afternoon and we weren’t chasing the sun to dusk, neither were we rattling our metals. We toured the metropolitan Pink City on the third day. Jaipur is popularly known as the Pink City because of the colour of the stone exclusively used for the construction of all the structures. Since pink denotes the colour of hospitality, Maharaja Ram Singh of Jaipur painted the whole city pink to welcome the Prince of Wales and Queen Victoria in 1876. The tradition has been sincerely followed by the residents who are now, by law, compelled to maintain the pink colour.
and that a person who does not stop to pray at the shrine is in for a dangerous journey. The restaurants opposite were certainly profiting from it. That night we roped the dhaba’s owner in to strengthen our tacit unanimity on the Om Banna story. I wonder if anyone else saw the shattering disappointment manifest on the faces around the bonfire. I was only too facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
On the evening of 4th February, we reached Agra. A fellow rider sponsored our hotel stay which was about 30 minutes walking distance to the well-renowned Taj Mahal built by Shah Jahan for his beloved Mumtaz. That evening was a full moon night which meant that the splendid Taj Mahal was open so that visitors could marvel at the semi-precious stones which sparkled under the full moonlight. A fact we learnt, unfortunately, the following day when we visited the Mughal architecture. We managed to squeeze in a quick trip to Agra Fort where Shah Jahan was confined in his declining years by his successor and son Auranzeb.
We gathered the audacity to depart by 2pm for Nepal. Of course, that was before ‘happy hours’ interfered, thus, Agra had us for another night. We roared to life in the early hours of 6th February and chased the sun down as we sped to enter Nepali borders before its closing hours. Speeding was no doubt a neardeath experience. A second too early would have seen a Bannainspired temple. We lodged at Mahendranagar where we made arbitrary plans to visit the suspension bridge above Sharda River at Mahakali and set our teeth on deep fried Chisapani fish, just because. We figured that upon returning to Butwal we would be compelled to sleep because we would reach too late to ride further. We decided that rest was not a priority (again) and our sacrifice proved worthy. The same evening we accommodated ourselves at Lamahi, Dang which was 100 odd km away from Butwal. The next morning we rode with utmost discipline unprecedented and reached Daunne for lunch. At Bhardaghat, we had our selfies next to the ‘London Bridge’ signboard, a drill oft-executed whenever we were in the United Kingdom of Nepal before riding fiercely with the exception of short tea & pee breaks. Finally, we concluded our ride at Jazz Upstairs around 9pm at our dustiest for a photo op, beer, momo and 5000km of horizontal limit clocked in.
I wonder if anyone else saw the shattering disappointment manifest on the faces around the bonfire.

Authorized by Nepal Cycling Association and co-organized by Life Cycle Nepal and Epic Events, the championship had 21 participants in three categories – Elite, Junior and Open. Though there seemed to be comparatively fewer participants in this year’s race, the quality and management of the event as well as the performance of riders definitely saw a remarkable improvement. “All the training has finally paid off,” said winner Yakthumba. “But definitely, competition was stiff and I could tell everybody was well prepared for the race,” he added, pointing out the split-second time difference between the winners. Likewise, firstrunner up Mangal Lama maintained, “There are several risks involved in this sport, so proper training, equipment and persistence are an absolute necessity.” Lama rose to prominence last year as the only athlete in Nepal to be a part of National cross-country team as well as the downhill team. Meanwhile, defending champion Rajesh Magar took home bronze. Despite a thunderous finish, his demeanor at the finish line was far from joyous. “I am disappointed but I know it’ all a part of the game,” said 2014 champion Magar, referring to the mechanical glitch he had on the final run. Also noteworthy was the upcoming female cyclist Nishma Shrestha. “Quite frankly, as accessible crosscountry biking is, downhill is far more thrilling,” she said. “It is more challenging and really pushes my technical skills.” Shrestha participated in the event as the first ever female downhill rider in Nepal. The 5th Downhill National Championship was a spectacular success and saw quite a few surprises – pleasant and otherwise – Nepal’s first lady downhill rider and of course, a new downhill champion.
