EDITORIAL NADA AUTOSHOW
I
It’s that time of the year again, when the skies are clear, the air is fresh, the bright sun is beaming down on the lands. And the best part is, the NADA Auto Show is finally happening. It’s a shame that we have to wait an entire year for the one and only auto-show in the country to take place but the excitement is well worth it. Forget about the festivities, this is what us petrol heads wait for all year round. So be prepared to see some brand new wheels hitting the Nepali tarmacs this year; the anticipation has been building and we’re sure all of us are in for a treat. One of the most anticipated launches this year was the Hyundai Creta. We here are AutoLife were practically at the edge of our seats when it finally entered the Capital, and we got our hands on it the very next day. The Creta had a lot of weight on its shoulders in terms of expectations that is had to live up to thanks to its global hype. Read our review about the most awaited SUV of this year. Another big(ger) boy on test this issue is the upgraded XUV 500 from Mahindra. It was by far the best Mahindra on the roads, in our opinion, and it has been given a further update. Now that can’t possibly be bad could it? Also, after testing the Ford Figo Aspire during the launch that took place in Udaipur, we were excited to test the beauty out on our very own roads. It’s here in Nepal and might just have taken the sub 4 meter segment up a notch. Check out our comprehensive review of what we think is the best looking sub sedan in the market right now. On the two wheelers front, we have the Pulsar AS siblings. Finally, Bajaj seem to have dared to venture away from the tarmac and onto unpaved roads. The adventure series sees the juggernaut company tiptoeing into a new segment. There are a lot of goodies that will keep you entertained with this issue, including a rare find of a 1980 Mercedes W123 with a Royal Inheritance. Flip through this issue and get your dose of everything auto in Nepal. See you at the AutoShow! Until next time!

This Fast, Tough War Machine Truck Could Be the Next Humvee All it needs now is a catchy name The U.S. Army’s search for a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle replacement for the aging Hummer has finally come to an end. It looks like Oshkosh Corp’s L-ATV will replace the Humvees. The vehicle is lighter than the Humvees, making it easier to transport by air, and it features better protection from mines and roadside bomb. The L-ATV features 20 inches of wheel travel, an adaptable suspension based on terrain, turret-operated weapons systems, remote weapons systems, a tube-launched missile system, a digitally-controlled GM 6.6-liter Duramax Diesel V8 with 397 horsepower (and an unspecified pound-feet of torque), an Allison transmission, an on-board power generator, and 360-degree armor protection. Reportedly, the L-ATV just drives like a big pickup. All it needs now is a catchy name.

Owner’s Review Skoda is a reputed European brand, hence I thought buying the Rapid would be a good value for money proposition. And I believe I have made the right decision. The Rapid is well designed and looks better than other sedans in the segment. Talking about the interiors, it is luxurious as compared with other sedans. The seats are equally comfortable making the vehicle excellent for long drives. The overall interior of the car is extremely spacious. Talking about the performance of the car, I find the handling of the car satisfactory for our roads. The engines are quite powerful and are fairly suitable for our roads. I have taken the sedan to many places outside the valley. The ground clearance is enough to tackle our bumps and potholes easily. The Rapid is an absolute delight to drive and is extremely comfortable, even during extensive road trips.
Anmol Upreti
Director Shikhar Shoes Pvt. Ltd.
In addition to the car’s aesthetics and performance, the customer care service provided by Skoda is excellent. I believe that Skoda Rapid is a good valuefor-money car and I would definitely recommend it to others seeking for a sedan.

OWNER’S REVIEW
I always wanted an SUV which was practical for our roads and Tata being one of the best Indian brands, there was no second opinion on preferring some other SUV than a Safari Storme. And I think I chose the right product. The Safari Storme is the best-in-class SUV with the list of features at a fair price. The cost of ownership is minimal as compared with other brands. The exterior of the SUV looks smashing and also has a sporty essence to it. It is well designed and the interior is equally spacious and comfortable. The performance of the car has been amazing so far and its perfect ground clearance makes it suitable for the roads of Nepal. The pickup is on par with other Japanese cars which I’ve driven. My job requires me to travel extensively outside the valley. I have taken the Storme to almost 6065 districts within Nepal. The vehicle’s handling, power and performance have never disappointed me. I am planning to take the Storme to Mustang this upcoming festive season. I must say the car has lived up to my expectations. All in all, I find the Safari Storme to be an excellent choice for our roads.

The sedan is a status symbol for many, but owning one isn’t financially feasible for everyone. So we understand the logical coherence of the existence of the sub-4 meter segment, but to be completely honest, we wouldn’t miss it if it didn’t exist at all. And the only reason we say this is because this has been a very difficult segment to get right for almost all of the automobile manufacturers. Cramming the goodness of a sedan under the 4 meter barrier is not an easy task. It seems that the being of this segment all stems down to the tax laws of India. It isn’t because sedans cost more to manufacture, but it has more to do with the tax that the Indian Government levies on sedans as compared to smaller cars. The Indian government wants to promote small cars as they are eco-friendly and consume less fuel. They are easy to park and maneuver. They take less space on the road and help in reducing traffic congestion. As a result, all cars measuring under 4-meters in length and having an engine capacity of less than 1.5-litres (diesel) / 1.2-liters (gasoline) are classified as a small car and attract only 12% excise duty while all other cars attract 27%. This tax difference transcends into the Nepali market as well, which brings along the difference in the costs of sedans and these faux sedans. However, we never said that our minds couldn’t be changed, say, by a really good looking compact sedan. Entering what seems like a segment condemned to less than good-looking cars is the Ford Figo Aspire. Good news though, it is quiet a looker.

EXTERIOR
Ford has taken the task of creating a close-to-perfect compact sedan very seriously and in doing so have created one of the best looking ones. The inspiration from Aston Martin is evident when you see the large hexagonal chrome infused grille. The bonnet hosts a prominent bulge with strong creases leading from the badge up till the windscreen which gives the Aspire a hint of aggressiveness. The large swept back headlights also fit well into the entire design, but they have given the projector headlamps and daylight running lights a skip. Circular fog lamps have been integrated into the front bumper. Well defined shoulder lines sculpt the side profile of the Aspire giving it a good dose of flavor. Both the tail lamps and headlights are visible from the side. The well thought out designs transfer into the rear as well, although it does look less intricate than the rest of the car. A bold chrome strip runs between both the large D shaped tail lamps on either side. The 14-inch 8-spoke alloy wheels looks stylish and go well with the overall design. The wheel fills up the arch quite well.
INTERIOR AND FEATURES
The interior of the Ford Figo Aspire is a stylish affair. The dashboard follows the tried and tested design element that Ford is so fond of. A V design dashboard houses an infotainment screen and an array of buttons which control the phone and media controls. Steering wheels are well sculpted and don’t have too many buttons cluttering up the space. Speedometer and tachometer are well placed and visible.

If you’re into storage spaces, the Figo has 20 of them, including a very nifty compartment on the side of the dashboard that isn’t easily noticeable. The 359 liter boot space is plentiful. Seating is also very comfortable with proper lumbar support and space for both driver and the passengers. Leather upholstery that was featured is a first in the segment. On the safety front, Ford has left no stone unturned. It is the first in its segment to offer 2 airbags and ABS through all variants, something that will catch the fancy of every family man/woman looking to buy a compact sedan. The top of the line Aspire on the other hand comes with an incredible six airbags which is a first for a car in this segment as well. The Aspire gets bluetooth telephony, an integrated audio infotainment system with phone controls and steering mounted audio controls. You also get a height adjustable steering wheel and driver’s seat along with electronically adjustable outside rear view mirrors with an electric folding option. You also get what Ford calls a MyKey which is essentially is like a central control over system settings like the speed limiter, seatbelt reminder and the infotainment volume limiter.
PERFORMANCE
You get three engine options, the 1.2 liter petrol, a 1.5 liter diesel and a 1.5 liter petrol that comes exclusively with an automatic gearbox. The diesel variant we drove makes 100PS of peak power with 215Nm of peak torque. The car felt eager and refined. It was raring to go at a drop of a hat. It provided great

pulling power throughout the rev ranges and made every overtaking maneuver a fun event. Floor the pedal and the car will respond with vigor. Gear shifts are crisp and handling is light. It can find its way out of city traffic pretty well and doesn’t feel heavy. Furthermore, its ability to handle corners is also wonderful. Suspension is well balanced and doesn’t feel too bouncy even in rough terrain. Braking is good, and combined with the grippy 14 inch Apollo tyres, inspires confidence. Overall, it is a fun car to drive.
Verdict
The best thing about the Ford Figo Aspire is that it stands out in its segment in terms of design; it might even be the best looking car in the segment. It might also edge out its competition in some aspects of the performance as well. The great balance between suspension comfort and stiffness makes this car great fun to drive. Add to that the amazing power output and you have one of the best combinations out there. The petrol variant does seem slightly underpowered; however it is still a good car to drive. Nevertheless, we would still prefer the diesel over the petrol variant. Safety features present in the Aspire are astonishingly good and might help tremendously in putting the car in the forefront of competition. The price tag is also very competitive which promises great potential for the Ford Figo Aspire.

When you’re anticipating something you’ve heard so many good things about your expectations tend to soar and often go overboard. When we first got whiff about the news about a brand new SUV from Hyundai in the making we started getting fidgety. Online news fueled our anticipation even further. When one of our boys, who was invited to the global unveiling in Delhi, returned with a giddy smile on his lucky face we were practically holding on to our seats. It’s no wonder that we had our hands on the Hyundai Creta in less than 24 hours of it entering Kathmandu. It’s not a sub 4 meter vehicle which we couldn’t be more thankful for. It is a lot larger than its competitors and with three engine and two gearbox options and several variants consumers are practically spoiled for choice. So this was the moment of truth. We find out if the Hyundai Creta lived up to expectations or fall short of what we expected.
Exterior Sometimes it takes you a moment to really fall in love with how a car looks; this wasn’t one of those times. We loved how the Creta looked right off the bat. Hyundai’s newest sports utility vehicle is based on the Elite i20 hatchback platform and gets design inspiration from the company’s fluidic 2.0 Philosophy. The designs aren’t as aggressive as the Verna or Elantra but toned down to maturity, much like how they styled the Elite i20. However, the fluidic aspect of the styling remains very much intact and plays well with its impressively well proportioned stance that doesn’t look too compact.
SOMETIMES IT TAKES YOU A MOMENT TO REALLY FALL IN LOVE WITH HOW A CAR LOOKS; THIS WASN’T ONE OF THOSE TIMES. WE LOVED HOW THE CRETA LOOKED RIGHT OFF THE BAT.

The front end’s boxy design cues give the Creta an imposing bearing which reminds you of the Santa Fe. Its signature chrome-triple-slated hexagonal front grille sits between the well sculpted projector headlights which get the DRL treatment. Fog lamps are integrated into vertical inserts on

the bumper which could have gone horribly wrong, but with the Creta it looks splendid. It has a longer bonnet and features a more upright SUV like stance. From the sides, you can tell that breaking the 4 meter barrier has given the Creta dynamic form. Shoulder lines running parallel to the window add a lot of character. A-pillars have been blacked out and merge well with the roof. The rear has also been very well thought out and keeps up with the standards set by the overall design. Like the headlamps the split tail lamps wrap around well and are visible from the side. Bottom claddings fit the SUV well and help give it a robust appearance.
Interior and Features Hyundai have done a great job of giving the Creta a premium feel by using good quality materials and great features. The interiors are a combination of black and beige with the latter filling in the center section. A large touch screen in the center works as a stereo control and display, map and navigation (not yet functional in Nepal) and a rearview camera. Bluetooth and telephony work well and can be operated via steering mounted controls. Climate controls are placed below the display and work well to cool the cabin quickly. Rear 46

A/C vents are placed behind the front center armrest. There is a rear armrest too that also features two cup holders. The chunky vertical door handles are a nice touch that helps keep the SUV feel. Also, it is very spacious with plenty of leg room and head space. Although not class leading, boot space is impressive and well shaped. The rear seats tumble down to offer a flat loading bay. Other features include keyless entry and push button ignition, electric folding mirrors, rear AC vents, six airbags, reverse parking camera, ESC, VSM and hill assist control
Performance The Creta has covered all the bases with three engine variants, one petrol and two diesels. A 1.6L diesel engine borrowed from the Verna and a 1.4L diesel with the engine borrowed from the i20. There is also a 1.6 diesel automatic option on offer which is a first in the market. We drove the 1.6-litre VTVT unit (also seen in the Verna) that churns out 121bhp and 151Nm. It was quick off the mark and remained smooth through

all the rev ranges. Overtaking was impressive and in fact made it seem like the car was eager to get ahead. Considering the road presence the exterior provided, it was a very good ability to hone. Gear shifts were buttery smooth; although we didn’t have to downshift too much at all, it wouldn’t have been too much of an issue. The engine performed best at the 2000-3500 rpm range and felt at home cruising through the city.
HANDLING IS IMPRESSIVE AND VERY CAR LIKE. IT IS NIMBLE AROUND CORNERS WITH LITTLE BODY ROLL. STRAIGHT LINE STABILITY IS ALSO COMMENDABLE AND IT STAYS PLANTED EVEN AT HIGH SPEEDS.

Handling is impressive and very car like. It is nimble around corners with little body roll. Straight line stability is also commendable and it stays planted even at high speeds. The steering is light and moderately responsive. The 17 inch rims it runs on gives the Creta plenty of grip. Over smooth tarmac the ride quality is smooth and it holds its own over our pot hole infested roads. Although it isn’t AWD it can take some mild offroading in its stride.

Building anticipation leads to heightened expectations that can be difficult to fulfill. News about the making of the Creta sent the auto world abuzz, and soon enough all we were hearing were good things about it. Rest assured, we were mighty excited about the Creta’s arrival.

Thankfully, the Creta lived up to our expectations and did not disappoint. On the designs front, Hyundai have hit all the right spots. It is large, robust and has tremendous road presence. Feature packed and providing a premium feel, it is a great combo of stunning looks, utility and creature comforts. And for an SUV it handles great and gives good performance. With everything looking and feeling like an SUV it would have been amazing if AWD would have been offered which would give it some serious offroad capabilities. Nevertheless, it is an amazing vehicle that might just be taking the crown for 2015. Of course, we hope there are more contenders that would vouch for the position.

The Vespa is a cultural icon that has been in production for over five decades as one of the most legendary transport phenomena of the 20th century. The scooter was invented in 1947 as a low cost alternative for the masses to the automobile in war-ravaged Europe. What started as Enrico Piaggio’s determination to produce an automobile for the masses has turned into an iconic marquee. From the very first 98cc model in 1946 to the 2003 Granturismo and the Vespa S in 2007, Piaggio has produced over 144 models, versions and variants of the Vespa (marked by different chassis codes): 144 models that trace the technical evolution of the world’s most famous scooter. By the time the Vespa ET4 was launched in 1996, over 20,000 modifications had been made to the original 1946 product and over 1,500 parts replaced. It is difficult to pick out the most representative Vespas in an evolution that has lasted over 60+ years. Some Vespas are sought after by collectors because they belong to a special series, or because they were rapidly replaced by subsequent versions, and are highly priced in the period scooter market, which is extremely active all over the world. Others, which were produced in greater numbers or stayed on the market longer, are classic scooter models that have left their mark in the history of two-wheeled mobility. There is no lack of authentic technical records in the Vespa’s history, each of which renews the tradition of innovation that has marked the evolution of the world’s best selling motor scooter.

Vespa 98, 1946 - The first Vespa. It was powered by a 98 cc engine that delivered 3.2 bhp at 4,500 rpm with a top speed of 60 km/h. It was in production for two years: in 1946 vehicles no. 1 to no. 2,464 were produced, and no. 2,465 to no. 18,079 in 1947.
Vespa Time Line Vespa 125, 1948 - The first Vespa 125 cc. It differed from the 98 not only in engine size, but also for the introduction of rear suspension; the front suspension was also modified.
Vespa 125, 1953 - This marked the first important change to the engine: bore, stroke and timing gear were modified. Power output increased to 5 bhp at 5,000 rpm, and top speed to 75 km/h. The design of the fairing at the rear was also new.
Vespa 125 U, 1953 - The "Utility" Vespa 150 GL, 1963 Another new design for what has been called "one of the best-looking Vespas produced by Piaggio designers". The handlebar, trapezoid headlamp, front mudguard and trimmed-down rear lids were all new.
Vespa 150 GS, 1955 Experts called it "the most popular, imitated and remembered model". There were numerous innovations: the 150 cc engine, 4-speed gearbox, standard long saddle, "faired" handlebarheadlamp unit, wheels with 10" tyres. This Vespa could reach 100 km/h. The design also changed, with a much more aerodynamic body.
version with spartan styling, which sold at 20,000 lire less than the more modern 125. The headlamp appeared high up on the handlebar for the first time in Italy (it had already been introduced on a number of exported models).
Vespa 125 Primavera, 1968 - Together with the
Vespa 50, 1964 - The first Vespa 50 cc, created to exploit the new Italian Highway Code, which made a number plate obligatory on larger engines. Extremely versatile and reliable, the engine featured a new layout, with the cylinder inclined 45째 instead of horizontal. It was the last design to leave Corradino D'Ascanio's drawing board.
Vespa 180 SS, 1965 - It marked a new milestone in the growth of the engine (181.14 cc), with 10 bhp for a top speed of 105 km/h. The 180 SS (Super Sport) replaced the glorious GS 150/160 cc. Piaggio modified the front cowling, making it more aerodynamic and significantly improving comfort, handling and roadholding.
subsequent PX version, it was the most durable version of the Vespa. It derived from the "new" 125, but with considerable differences in the engine, which raised the top speed by 10 km/h. Great attention was paid to details, which included the classic, practical bag hook.
Vespa 125 Primavera ET3, 1976 - The name stood for "Electronic 3 intake ports", and included important changes to the engine, which had more power and sparkle. Even the styling was changed from the standard Primavera (which remained in the range).
www.autolife.com.np
Vespa 200 Rally, 1972 - The Vespa with the largest engine. This model, with 12.35 bhp at 5,700 rpm, could reach 116 km/h.
Vespa 50 Elestart, 1970 - It featured the great novelty of electric ignition, but the design was also completely revised and embellished compared to the 50 Special.
AUTOLIFE September 2015 51
Vespa PK 125 Automatic, 1984 Vespa P 125 X, 1978 - The "PX" marked a new step forward in styling (the bodywork was completely redesigned) and performance. The hold-all was positioned behind the cowling. The same year the P 200 E also appeared, which could be equipped with separate lubrication and direction indicators incorporated in the body. Three years later the PX 150 E was launched, with performance halfway between the two models.
Vespa PK 50, 1983 Substantially identical to the PK 125, it appeared in two models, PK 50 and PK 50 S, both with 4-speed gearbox and electronic ignition.
- An automatic transmission was introduced on the Vespa, probably the most radical change (at least for the driver) since 1946. The presence of the automatic transmission was emphasised by the absence of the brake pedal, which was replaced by a lever on the left handlebar (which did not have to control the clutch as that was automatic). It was also available with automatic oil-petrol mixer and electric ignition. The following year the Vespa PK 50 Automatic was launched.
Vespa ET2 50cc, 1997 Same as the ET4 125, but with a 50cc 2-stroke catalysed engine.
Vespa ET4 150cc, 1999 First Piaggio scooter equipped with the new generation 4-stroke Leader engine, now on the 125cc model too.
Vespa ET4 50cc, 2000 - The first small Vespa with a 4-stroke engine, combining lively performance that will make no one regret the 2-stroke with quiet running and the reduction of polluting emissions. Fuel economy is outstanding: the Vespa ET4 50 has the highest range in the 50 cc class, with approx. 500 km on a full tank.
Vespa PX, 2001 - Classic design and unique features such as a four-speed gearbox have made the Vespa PX a cult scooter, a symbol of Italian style everywhere in the world. The 2-stroke 125, 150 and 200cc engines (displacements vary according to markets) with forced air cooling have electronic CDI ignition and electric start with a kick starter. The new PX now sports a powerful stainless steel front disc brake, 200 mm in diameter, guaranteeing prompt, safe and efficient braking. A reliable 150 mm rear drum modulates braking.
Vespa GTS 250 i.e. - Fifty years after the launch of the Vespa GS (Gran Sport), the first sport scooter in history and still a sought-after treasure for collectors and fans, Vespa GTS 250 i.e. - launched on 25 May 2005 in Portofino - renews the GS blend of speed and style to become the fastest, most powerful and most high-tech Vespa in history. With an avant-grade, extremely powerful 250cc four-stroke, four-valve electronic injection engine and two disc brakes with an optional ABS and brake servo, the Vespa GTS 250 i.e. was one of the first two-wheelers and the first 250cc to already meet the strict upcoming Euro 3 emissions limits.

Vespa 50 N, 1989 - The changes to the Italian Highway Code meant that 50 cc vehicles were no longer bound by the 1.5 bhp limit, and Piaggio presented a new small Vespa with improved performance (over 2 bhp at 5,000 rpm), and new, smoother styling. A "Speedmatic" automatic version was also launched.
Vespa Granturismo 200L and 125L, 2003 - In 2003, the Granturismo made its appearance as the most powerful Vespa ever produced. In 200L and 125L versions, it combines the Vespa's emotional appeal with state-of-the-art technology: this was the first-ever Vespa to have sparkling four-stroke, four-valve, liquid-cooled engines that meet the new Euro2 emissions standards, as well as 12-inch wheels on the 200L and a two-disk brake system. The steel body is a uniquely Vespa touch.
Vespa LX, 2005 - Launched in Rome on 10 May, 2005, the LX is the 139th Vespa in almost 60 years. It is the sublime heir of a truly unique legacy, a designer scooter for those who want a stylish, avantgarde scooter for town use. A "compact" Vespa, the LX replaces the glorious Vespa ET (over 460,000 units sold since 1996). It is available in four modern, environment-friendly displacements: 50cc two and four strokes as well as a 125 and a 150cc four stroke.

Vespa GTS 125 - As of 2007, the Vespa GTS is also available in a 125 cc version. A perfect combination of elegance and performance, the Vespa GTS 125 offers all the class, exclusivity and high technology of the bigger GT scooter, but with a 125 cc engine.
Vespa GTV and LXV, 2006 Conceived to celebrate an absolute legend in the world of two wheelers, the Vespa LXV and Vespa GTV repeat and re-interpret the most distinctive elements of ‘50s and ‘60s styling in form and function. The Vespa GTV, available with 125 and 250 cc engines, stands out for its headlight mounted on the mudguard just as the original 1946 prototype.
The Vespa LXV, offered with a choice of 50, 125 and 150 cc engines, is inspired by the smooth, essential lines of the Vespas of the 1960s, and features a sleek, minimalist look characterised by open handlebars and a two part seat.
Vespa GT 60°, 250cc, 2006 - This is the gift that Vespa was determined to give its fans to celebrate the company's sixtieth anniversary. With its prestigious materials and exclusive finish, this unique limited edition is made in a series of only 999 units, and is destined to become one of the milestones in Vespa's long history.
Vespa S 50 and 125, 2007 - All the character of the sporty "Vespino" of yesteryear is revived by the brand new Vespa S. This fascinating blend of styles and memories keeps the soul of the youngest and most sporting of all Vespas alive in the present day. The Vespa S inherits its rigorously minimalist looks from legendary models of the 1970s like the 50 Special and Vespa Primavera.

INHERITANCE OF
KRITIJAI PAHARI

AUTOLIFE September 2015
www.autolife.com.np
If there is anything that automobile aficionados can agree on it’s the fact that German engineering kicks ass; which is why generations of like minded Nepali petrol heads have dreamt of having a Merc parked in their garage. And there are a lucky few who have been able to live out their dreams. Then there is Kritijai Pahari. What we have here is a rare find: a 1982 Mercedes W123 200 model in mint condition with a Royal heritage. Kritijai is the proud owner of this masterpiece which was handed down to him by his grandfather. Working for the development sector, currently under the United Nations, Kritijai invited us over to get a firsthand look at one of the cars we grew up hoping to catch a glimpse of. And it was as majestic as we remember.
How much of a car enthusiast would consider yourself? I’m no grease monkey but I am definitely a car enthusiast at heart. This isn’t your ordinary Merc, is it? Tell us about how you got it and its rich heritage. This car was procured from Germany by the Royal Court of Nepal in 1982 for the use of HM King Tribhuvan’s second wife, HM Queen Ishwari RLD Shah. It was specially ordered with selflevelling suspension and a luxurious cream-beige coloured velour interior, whilst avoiding leather for cold winters. Queen Ishawri was only chauffeured in the car a few times before she passed away in 1983. It was then occasionally used by King Birendra and later Prince Nirajan. The car was later bought by my grandfather, Dr. Sachey Kumar Pahari who was the Royal Physician, who then passed it onto myself.
Kathmandu, I feel that you are bullied less on the roads and a higher vantage point in a hazardous environment is always advantageous. It’s also always a safer option for highway driving. But there are some things that only a Merc can provide; like the doors that shuts with the finality of a Zurich bank vault.
Where do you get your maintenance done? The service is carried out by Devu dai in Basbari. He is a mechanic who was sent to Germany by the Palace to be accustomed to the old Mercedes Benz engines. A wise move seeing as a lot of Palace cars were Mercedes. The body polish for special occasion is taken cared for by Auto Spa in Lazimpat; they always do a fantastic job.
Do you drive it around often? Of course, it’s in perfect condition. And now that the roads are widened and traffic flow is better, I have been taking it out more often. It is a nice change not to be stuck in second gear at 20km/h throughout the duration of a journey. It’s smooth and the AirCon blasts cold air. So no reason to keep it tucked away!
Getting spare parts for this gem must be difficult. How do you go about it? This car has barely covered 25,000 kilometers since new and I assure you that it has been maintained and cared for befitting its royal lineage, avoiding the need for any major repairs. However, out of pure luck, the world specialist for this particular model happens to live 20 minutes away from my family home in Britain and he has a garage stocked with all the original spares.
When you’re not driving this classic, what do you use to get around? Be it here or abroad, I tend to stick to 4x4s for daily use. In
Do you have a special memory with this car that you’d like to share? It was in the late 90s and I still remember my late grandfather
www.autolife.com.np
AUTOLIFE September 2015 57
Which was the first car that you owned? A VW Golf, sweet little ride. Is there any other classic or modern car you wish to see in your garage? If I were to stick to the current theme of classics, I’d love to wake up one morning and find a 300 SL Gullwing in the garage. Or a Merc 600 Grosser. Or even a 65’ Mustang Fastback. This is far too difficult! What is the best and worst thing about driving in Nepal? Where do I even begin? There is complete anarchy on our roads. Having spent a considerable amount of time driving in a country where the traffic rules and regulations are strictly adhered to, and where there is mutual respect and cooperation between drivers, driving in Kathmandu can be extremely challenging. Apart from the usual daytime traffic causing havoc, driving tends to be more hazardous at nightfall due to the lack of street lighting. A vast majority of bikers and drivers use headlights on full beam to avoid the usual hazards of potholes, pedestrians and cyclists. This is a real pain. We tend to adapt to such conditions but I’m sure the readers would agree with me when thinking about how great of a change can be achieved by installing solar street lamps on the main roads. The best part about driving in Nepal is undoubtedly the sheer beauty that surrounds you as you cruise along outside Kathmandu valley. It is an incredible feeling.
Dr. Sachey Kumar Pahari is the grandfather of Kritijai Pahari. He bought the Merc from the Royal Family. surprising me at my parent’s home with this Merc. It was the very day the car was delivered to him and you can probably imagine the excitement on my face when I saw the coveted three-pointed star emblem standing tall on the chrome grille. It feels surreal when driving around in that same car today. This gift therefore has a huge sentimental value to me. I also feel as though I have a responsibility of preserving a historical timepiece; one that has personal links to the likes of late King Birendra.
Tell us about your interest in automobiles. I’ve been passionate about cars, both modern and classics from an extremely young age. My dear nanny Kamali still has a laugh about how the only possible way to feed me breakfast as a child was in my father’s jeep. She never fails to forget the morning we both got a “time out” punishment after I managed to release the handbrake, making the vehicle nudge a wall over an omelette breakfast. To a certain extent, the interest may also have been passed on to me from my late grandfather who, in hindsight, could be deemed as a petrol head back in his day. As a kid, I remember growing up with his stories of driving European cars in Kathmandu including the likes of Saab, VW, Alfa Romeo, Land Rover etc. I have kept the original hand written letter from the Italian gentleman who sold the Alpha, stating how caring and gentle one should be with it and how fully prepared grandfather must be to “...spend more on it than on your dear wife”! After moving abroad as a young boy, I obviously got a lot more exposure with European cars and my interest grew further. How and when did you learn to drive? I remember doing a fair amount of steering control whilst sat on my late paternal grandfather’s lap back in the day! Kathmandu was so much quieter even when I was growing up. Great memories. But coming to think of it, the first time I actually learnt how to drive independently was my late maternal grandfather’s red Massey Ferguson tractor in his farm. I was probably around 12-14 years old and I still remember him watching from the veranda above.

MAHINDRA XUV 500 W10 62
AUTOLIFE September 2015

Mahindra pulled out all the stops when they came out with the XUV 500 back in 2011 and put the manufacturer on the map as a contender in the premium SUV market. The monocoque SUV appeared on the scene with bold styling, good road presence, a plethora of equipment and creature comforts, and a dependable brand name. Although some people remained skeptical about the high price tag, there was no denying that Mahindra had ticked all the right boxes with the XUV 500 and become a popular SUV. Despite the popularity and likability in terms of pricing amongst SUVs, the XUV 500 had to keep up with competition; especially with the emergence of so many compact SUVs. So, like most things in today’s fast changing world, the XUV 500 too received an update. However, the updates are not just skin deep and there is a lot to look forward to.
THE MAHINDRA ‘NEW AGE’ XUV500 IS POWERED BY THE SAME TRANSVERSEMOUNTED 2.2-LITER MHAWK 140 DIESEL ENGINE. www.autolife.com.np
AUTOLIFE September 2015 63
THE STYLING UPGRADE The update certainly brings along its share of cosmetic upgrades. The already good looking XUV 500 gets even better. Mahindra have stuck to the basic cheetah inspired design they boasted of when the XUV first came out. In fact, they have toned down the aggressiveness aiming to achieve a more mature appearance. Up front, the aggressive faux intake whisker has been replaced with simple ‘L-Shaped’ chrome element that houses the re-positioned foglamps. The white front grille has also been replaced with toned down black grilles. The engine hood is now cleaner, and has two sculpted bulges on either side, which make the front end look a bit higher when viewing from the side. Opening the hood is an easier affair now as Mahindra have equipped pneumatic struts (topend model only). The sides and rear haven’t been introduced to too much change but that isn’t too much of a bad thing because they got it right the first time around. The only changes brought about by the facelift are a chrome window underlining and new 17-inch alloy rims. The identical ORVMs now feature puddle lights that project the XUV500 logo on the ground.
THE INTERIOR UPGRADE In the center console, Mahindra have replaced the reflective wood trim in the center console for a simple black plastic trim with dull grey surrounds. Taking the limelight though is the all new 7-inch ICE infotainment touchscreen display. There is good brightness and contrast levels, colors in the screen don’t look washed out under direct sunlight. The Bluetooth connectivity streamed music from any smartphone without any interruptions or sound distortion. It also syncs to your contact list and, 64

AUTOLIFE September 2015 65
Verdict THE PERFORMACE UPGRADE apart from the telephony feature, can also read your SMS out loud. Mahindra has slightly improved the build quality of the interior with new materials and things seem firmer than the pre-facelift XUV500.The driver’s seat is power-adjustable in 6 different ways, which helps fine-tune the driving position. The XUV also boasts of one of the most spacious cabins in the segment which gives it the great combination of highway drivability and premium feel. A neat sunroof unit has also been introduced. The Auto HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) system worked flawlessly in the new XUV500. Other features equipped include cruise control, auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, power-foldable ORVMs, and a pair of illuminated scuff plates on both sides. Mahindra have refined the ride quality as well.
Suspension has been better tuned to provide a sportier ride and high speed capabilities. The vehicles’ ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) system supplied by Bosch has been upgraded (by the supplier). The new ESP 9 system now offers more precise cornering and better lanekeeping capability at high speeds. The car also has brake energy regeneration that feeds power to the battery. The Mahindra ‘New Age’ XUV500 is powered by the same transversemounted 2.2-liter mHawk 140 diesel engine that makes 140 bhp at 3,750 rpm and 330 Nm of torque at 1,600-2,800 rpm. It isn’t sluggish by any means and makes overtaking maneuvers gracefully. Also, the rear view camera with guided lines is an added benefit. AWD version by default sends 60% of the power to the front wheels and 40% to the rear, which can also be made 50-50% by pressing the AWD lock button.
When the XUV first came out, we liked it. Although many didn’t consider the Mahindra moniker to be makers of exceptionally good looking cars the XUV 500 definitely had people thinking differently. Sans of an exorbitant price tag, Mahindra’s offering was one of the best value for money SUVs propositions available. Their recent upgrade has made the XUV 500 even better, providing even more creature comforts than it did before. Featuring an assortment of 31 new features and bagging 29 awards in India, the XUV has cemented itself as a formidable competitor in the SUV market with a price tag that will set rivals sweating.
THE XUV ALSO BOASTS OF ONE OF THE MOST SPACIOUS CABINS IN THE SEGMENT WHICH GIVES IT THE GREAT COMBINATION OF HIGHWAY DRIVABILITY AND PREMIUM FEEL.

PULSAR AS 150 AND AS 200
ADVENTURE
UPGRADE
BAJAJ
has always gained traction in any segment it enters thanks to its products’ tremendous appeal and power-packed performance. While the current breed of Pulsars are capable of everything from city commuting to long-distance riding, their all-round ability didn’t extend beyond tarmac. But, Bajaj tweaked this into a completely different direction, not only giving us a new series of Pulsars but also emphasizing on what’s next in the pipeline. After the NS (Naked Sport), and Racing Sport (RS), Bajaj has now launched the Adventure Sport (AS) series, which is the company’s subtle attempt into the dual-purpose segment, and if it gets established, the company will launch few more products in this segment. Although listed as ‘Adventure Sports’ model by Bajaj, the AS twins rather look touringfriendly than proper adventurers. However, where other companies never quite amaze us with their products, Bajaj’s AS series has got what is takes we’ve come to expect from this series of Pulsar bikes – appealing styling, keen performance and agile handling. But, does this latest series of Pulsars turn the brand into more of an all-rounder? We find out…
www.autolife.com.np
AUTOLIFE September 2015 71
STYLING:
The AS twins borrow heavily from their normal siblings, but in the transformation to AS, they have certainly become more appealing. The imposed half-fairing with the projector headlamp and a visor, in a medley of overly fussed rivals, was one of the many reasons why we liked them so much. The visor provides high-speed protection while the 55W projector headlamps provide better visibility in the dark. The bike’s rear end is strengthened by a Nitrox mono suspension, a cleverly integrated sareeguard and an easy-to-hold black grab bar which is perfectly blended into the design. An engaging instrumentation cluster and illuminated switchgears are other bonuses. If only Bajaj had provided these bikes with hand-guards, panniers and dual-purpose tyres, the AS series could’ve been a serious contender to beat. Overall, the design integrates practicality as well as style.
ERGONOMICS:
The seating position is similar to the 200NS. The chassis is updated with a steel-fabricated perimeter frame for both bikes, for sharp handling and agility. The suspension set up and riding position is better suited for city riding than proper touring. The bikes incorporate telescopic front suspension and rear mono shocks. The AS150 gets smaller profile MRF tyres compared to the fatter Eurogrips on the AS200. There are petal rotor-equipped front disc brakes on the AS 150 and AS 200, and a rear disc brake for the AS200 with a drum on the AS150. ABS 72
AUTOLIFE September 2015
www.autolife.com.np
The suspension set up and riding position is better suited for city riding than proper touring. The bikes incorporate telescopic front suspension and rear mono shocks isn’t offered with either of the two new AS Pulsars. Combined with 17-inch wheels and 10-spoke alloy wheels, there’s 170 mm (AS150) and 167mm (AS200) of ground clearance. The bikes measure 2070 mm long, 804 mm wide, 1205 mm high, with a similar wheelbase of 1363mm. The AS150 is 143 kg dry while the AS200 stands at 153kg.
PERFORMANCE:
The AS200’s engine is the same old 199.5cc, carbureted engine that has worked so well for Bajaj. It’s a decent power-unit with 23.2 bhp at 9500 rpm and 18.3 Nm at 8000 rpm. The AS150 gets an all-new 149.5cc, single cylinder, air-cooled engine. It’s also one of the most powerful 150cc mills making 17 bhp at 9500 rpm. The AS 150 uses a five-speed gearbox while the AS 200 comes with six-speeds, both shifting in one-down, all-up patterns. The only difference between these two engines is that the AS150 is air-cooled, whereas the AS200 is liquid-cooled.
www.autolife.com.np
AUTOLIFE September 2015 73
With so much grip and performance, both bikes disguise their weight effectively. The bikes without doubt will cope well with light to medium off-road use.
Both bikes are powerful for their class. They accelerate in a lively fashion, steering ahead with a pleasantly natural feel. The AS200’s pickup and acceleration are ideally maintained, while the note from its grunty engine means the AS200 always feels playful while the refinement and performance level of the AS150 has gone up as compared with the older-gen Pulsar. The engine is quite refined in terms of vibrations. With so much grip and performance, both bikes disguise their weight effectively. The bikes without doubt will cope well with light to medium off-road use. There’s plenty of ground clearance for both of them. Both bikes have a 12-litre fuel tank with a reserve capacity of 2.4-litre, respectable enough for a good economical range of well over 500 kms. With so much grip and performance, both bikes disguise their weight effectively.
VERDICT:
The Pulsar AS series is an interesting proposition. It offers performance levels that best just about every other bike in the segment and when stretched on light off-road, it delivers almost the same levels of comfort and handling. The Adventure Sport twins are both capable and surprisingly fun. The AS series might not necessarily appeal to the hardcore adventure enthusiasts, but they are likely to win over buyers who have become accustomed to light touring and city riding. It looks like the AS series will spearhead the sales of the company, given that Bajaj is the most visible two-wheeler brand here in Nepal. 74

There is a fine line between serious motorcyclists/bikers and hooligans mucking around on a motorcycle. The latter tend to give bikers a bad name by being immature grade-A pie holes. Motorcycling is a serious passion that people feel strongly about but there are some people chocolate heroes that ruin it for the rest of us. Almost all serious riders opt for proper gear for their motorcycles or for themselves when they are riding one. Sadly, it isn’t always possible to get hold of these goods in Nepal. It’s either way too expensive or just too cheap of a copy. 9mm Motorcycling Clothing store aims to fill this gap. They have an existing array of products for your motorcycle and riding requirements and they can also ship in the products on demand. Whether it’s an original or a high copy, 9mm will bring you the products you want.
