EDITORIAL HAPPY NEW YEAR 2015!
P
Passion. Obsession. Lifestyle. Back in 2011, AutoLife was founded on the love for automobiles and everything related to it. With 58 test drives and 36 test rides under our belt, it has been a tremendous journey. We’ve scraped the flattest of the terai belts and kissed the highest mountains and along the way, we met some amazing people from all over the world who share the same passion. Staying true to the objective of doing our part for the betterment of the auto industry, we expanded our services to a different media: mobile applications. To stay on par with the dynamic technological environment, we brought the world of automobiles into the palm of your hands with the app AutoLife Nepal, the first of its kind in Nepal. The response we received was overwhelming, and we are proud to say the app was a great success. Time does fly by when you’re having so much fun, and if you’ve been with us through our journey, we hope you share the same sentiment. It is pleasantly surprising to find ourselves concluding our third year of doing what we do best. We couldn’t have imagined it going any better, and it wouldn’t have been possible without our readers. To celebrate our third anniversary, we pulled a few strings to bring you an exclusive review of the most select sets of wheels Nepal has to offer. We’re talking about the sleekest crossover in town, the Mercedes GLA, and the lavish Range Rover Evoque. These are two of the most elite vehicles we’ve ever had the fortune of getting our hands on and they definitely brought a huge smile on our faces. Hopefully, you will be grinning when you go through our review. We also welcome the newest sedan in the country, the Suzuki Ciaz. Chock full of exciting features, this full size sedan is one of the most exciting products to come out of the Suzuki roster. For all of the bikers out there, we have one of the best naked bikes in the world, the MV Agusta Brutale. As you can see, we pulled out all the stops to commemorate the end of our third year and the beginning of our fourth. We hope you enjoy this issue and hopefully you stay with us for all the years of adventure and reviews to come. Enjoy !

Owner’s Review I always wanted a sedan which was luxurious as well as practical and Škoda being one of the best European brands there was no second opinion on preferring some other car than a Skoda Rapid. And I think I have made the right choice. The interiors of the car is all very straightforward and clear. The dials are easy to read and the steering and gear lever are also fair. The seats are extremely comfortable and the overall interior of the car is extremely spacious. That said, everything is put together solidly and it’s clear that ŠKODA has given a lot of thought and attention to detail. All in all, the entire car looks stunning inside out and is a definite head turner. In addition to that, this car feels utterly secure at high speeds, it’s particularly comfortable. It absorbs broken surfaces with ease and additionally, the suspension works silently. The steering gives more feedback and is accurate, making the driving experience extremely exciting, especially in the highways of Nepal. When it comes to engine noise, this car is a lot more refined than the others in my experience. The car is extremely powerful and the back is very spacious plus has a suitcase swallowing storage space.

Coming to the customer service offered by Skoda, in my experience, the after sales service is quite good and the team is extremely supportive, however, there is always room for improvement.

T
he Chrysler 1960 New Yorker was stunningly smooth, and the V8 engine surprisingly quiet. “They don’t make them like they used to, these new cars have too much of a plasticky feel. Look at this, this is solid metal.” Raj B Shah, Managing Director and member of the BOD at Himalayan Distillery, explained as we drove through the roads of Godavari. Judging by the sturdy, large steering wheel, a retro speedo dial and the well-built dash, he wasn’t very far off. Owning and keeping a classic car in running condition is no easy task. It takes a lot of patience and passion to acquire, restore and drive vehicles that are over half a century old. This is even truer in the context of Nepal where it is difficult to get all the spare parts for new vehicles, let alone for ones that have been out of production for decades. But Raj B Shah is willing to put in that extra effort and is very proud of his fleet of restored classics. With a collection like his, who wouldn’t be? We got an opportunity to get a peek into his garage and even got a chance to hitch a short ride in one of his prized possessions. Here’s Raj’s extravagant AutoLife and his rare collection of Classic Cars.
AL: Tell us what’s parked in your garage at the moment? RBS: Amongst the classics, there is the 1928 Ford Model A Standard Phaeton 35-A 1934 Ford Deluxe Fordor 1942 Ford Prefect 1955 Austin Princess DM4 Vanden Plas Limo 1960 Chrysler New Yorker 1973 Daimler DS420 Vanden Plas Limo 1992 Nissan Patrol And the rest of the wheels I have, which are fairly newer, are 2006 Nissan Cefiro 2003 BMW 7 series 2007 Land Rover Discovery 2013 Volkswagen Tiquan 2013 Range Rover Sport Autobiography 2014 Polaris 570cc ATV facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AL: We’re sure there aren’t many others who can boast of such a collection. But which one do you drive the most? RBS: I drive the Nissan Cefiro the most because it's very comfortable and reliable and I don't mind it getting old and beaten up on our lovely roads. AL: What do you prefer more? Bikes or Cars? Why? RBS: I love riding bikes but due to the pollution in the city I am obliged to stick to my cars. But when I was younger, riding a motorcycle with a beautiful girl on the pillion seat was as exciting as it could get. AL: Hatchbacks, Sedans or SUVs?
RBS: Not a big fan of hatchbacks, for the roads of Kathmandu. If I’m travelling outside the valley I’d go on an SUV, otherwise I prefer driving and travelling in sedans. AL: How did you first learn to ride/ drive and which is the first car/bike you had a go on? RBS: As a kid, any time I could get a chance to sit on the driver seat I would, even if it were on someone’s lap just holding on to the steering wheel. I tried to pick up on things by watching other people drive, but my uncle was the first person to actualy teach me how to drive; he made me drive around with a filled cup of water on the dash board and told AUTOLIFE December 2014 37
me to drive smoothly so it doesn't spill. Thank goodness, traffic wasn’t so bad back in those days! My first ride was on a red Honda XL dirt bike. AL: Is there a driver behind the wheels of your car or is it you who takes charge? RBS: While riding to work in heavy traffic or going out in the evening for drinks, I always take a driver along. However on Saturdays, I take one of my classics out from my garage and get in the driver’s seat. AL: Till date, on which car or bike have you had the best ever riding/driving experience? RBS: I had the chance to drive a Ferrari once. It was scary fast. In fact, it was difficult to drive the machine at a slow pace. But it was one hell of an experience. AL: Personally, what have been the pros and cons of owning these exotic sets of wheels in Nepal? RBS: The good thing about it is, they are easy on the eyes and rarely will you see anyone driving the same car. Restoring these vehicles is an experience on its own. It’s also a great conversation started, and I love talking about it because cars have always been a passion and hobby for me. On the flip side, getting the abandoned cars to driveable conditions with operating parts takes a lot of patience. Plus, there aren’t any trained mechanics for restoring these cars and most of the work done is on the basis of trial and error. These beauties are also prone to breakdowns and are not fuel efficient in any sense of the word. The government doesn’t provide any special provision for classic cars either. Of course, to face all these problems you have to find a willing seller of these classic cars. People don’t want to sell the vintage cars they own, but neither do they fix it and get them to driving conditions. AL: One wicked or crazy thing that you have done on wheels? RBS: While I was driving during a heavy snowstorm in the USA, I lost control of my car and it spun circles 3 times before narrowly missing another car by less than a foot. I’d say that was pretty crazy.
AL: Your most memorable moment on 38

a car or bike? RBS: I once drove from Boston to Orlando, a total of 1800kms, in less than 24 hours without stopping. AL: Is there an ultimate dream car/ bike that you’d like to have parked in your garage? RBS: From the modern choices, a LaFerrari or Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 Pur Sang. From the classics, I’d love to own an American Duesenberg Model J or the German Mercedes 540k Special Roadster. AL: If you could wish for one automobile marquee to have a showroom here in Nepal, not yet present, which would it be? RBS: Can’t wait for the BMW and Porsche dealerships to open up hopefully within a year. AL: Where do you think is the best destination to drive/ride to in Nepal? RBS: For offroad thrills, I’d suggest a drive to Jomsom. And a drive from Nepalgunj to Karnali wouldn’t be too bad either. AL: In your opinion, what is the worst thing about driving/riding in Nepal and what is the best? RBS: Even though we pay the highest taxes in the world for cars, we have the worst roads, which doesn’t make any sense. Luckily, the world around us extremely beautiful, something we as Nepalese people, often take for granted or even overlook. AL: If you were given complete
control of the country, what changes would you bring about in the automotive scene of Nepal? RBS: I could name at least 100 things but this is what comes to mind. • Be stricter against simple violations, educate the drivers on defensive driving but increase the fines so people are actually afraid to get a ticket. • Multi-storey parking lots at different points all over the city • Legal drinking tolerance level should be permitted. • Have speed limit signs posted all around the country • Make a provision for classic cars: lowered renewal fees and allow old cars to be imported. If older than a 1970, give them a special permit. • Fix the Public transport. • Radio controlled taxis that are clean and not older than 10 years old with mandatory air conditioning. • Keep separate lanes for public transport • Have one type of public transport that is government operated and subsidized with clean new buses. • Strict environment emission checking. • Strict control on the fuel quality • Privatize the fuel industry so we finally can get decent fuel and don’t have to wait in line for days to get shoddy fuel. • Promote Electric cars with no tax on them. • Build better roads • Get the Fast Track highways done • Don’t allow anyone to dig up the facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
roads whenever they want and never fix it back. • Ensure when making roads they follow strict quality measures because no matter what they are making, they hardly last a year or two. • Plant trees on both sides of the roads instead of cutting them down. • Have more solar lights to brighten up the roads • Make it mandatory for all petrol pumps (and airports) to have clean bathrooms and keep them that way. • Make fly overs and express ways and charge people for using them • Computerize all blue books and driving licenses data banks so that applications and renewals can be done online. • Government issued license plates that need to be renewed annually • Traffic violation cameras throughout KTM with automated software that will mail violators the fines automatically with pictures and if not paid during annual renewals add late fees or cancel licenses. This would facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
give the traffic police more money than they could ever imagine and could fund better wider roads! • Lower the tax once and for all so everyone can afford to have a decent car parked in front of his or her homes. For what you pay for a new motorbike, you should be able to buy a nice 2nd car which is the case in other parts of the world. AL: How do you feel about the road widening and new roads construction project that is going on in the capital? RBS: It’s really great that it finally started. Unfortunately it’s still not enough. They need to be doubled again and every major road should be a six lane looking at how fast Kathmandu is getting populated. And things have gotten really slow now, in fact they might have even stopped. At the same time, they should have also changed all the electrical, phone, cable TV and Internet wiring to underground. AL: Have you ever been in the MA PA
SE police checking? If so, are there any funny incidents? RBS: Every Friday I get at every checkpoint and it gets frustrating at times. However I really feel bad for the Police Officers to have to smell everyone’s breath all night long. That cannot be good for your health. As for getting caught on Ma Pa Se, I have never been busted and I believe I never will. I am a strong supporter of social drinking but not drinking and driving! AL: Your message or word of advice to all the auto lovers and owners in the country. RBS: It doesn’t matter what car you have as long as you maintain it well. If you have an old classic please try to fix it and drive it or else please just sell it to someone who will care for it and enjoy it. Do not sell it for scrap! If you want to buy a classic, pay a little extra and buy one that is in running condition and has all paper work and taxes up to date. AUTOLIFE December 2014 39

MERCEDES BENZ GLA 42
AUTOLIFE December 2014

The latest segment seemingly ripe for expansion in the automobile sector is the crossover SUV sector. With environmental issues like global warming and alarming fossil fuel depletion, crossovers are fast replacing big brawny fuel guzzling SUVs. And one of the latest crossovers to arrive here in the Nepalese market is the Mercedes GLA. The Mercedes-Benz GLA is a luxury compact crossover which was first showcased at the Shanghai Auto show in 2013. It has been a long time coming, but Mercedes-Benz has finally joined the compact SUV crowd with the new GLA-Class.

EXTERIOR
The Mercedes GLA is one of the most streamlined crossover SUVs in the market with advanced aerodynamics. The front profile is highlighted by the dynamic Mercedes star emblem centred proudly in the massive twobar radiator grille and the sweptback headlamps show great detail with the lethal combination of projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights and LED fibre optics tracing a curve through the headlamp. The flaring intakes, sculpted bonnet, roof rails and muscular wheel arches that wrap around the 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels further give it that menacing look. The sharp character lines, which spans from the headlamps and sides to the rear, creates a seamlessly flowing sporty dynamics. The GLA is pretty from the back as well - something that can’t be said about most cars. At the rear, the roof integrated spoiler, protruding LED tail lights and dual exhausts have been tastefully done and the wide bumper area makes the GLA look quite large and beefy. Chrome has been used all around the car in the right dose and is not overdone.

Visually, the GLA is a refreshing crossover to look at with its muscular stance and athletic stride. It boasts of a youthful modern design that is enough for anyone to fall for it at the first glance.
INTERIOR
The interior also carries forward the sporty appearance. An attractive design give the dashboard an upmarket feel and a broad strip of metallic-finish plastic with five turbine-like circular air vents run over its wing like span. A freestanding tablet-style 5.8-inch colour display, which shows all the relevant display and doubles up as the monitor for the reversing camera, pops out in the centre. It’s not a touch screen though, and is operated by a pushable and movable controller located between the front seats. The logic here is to enable the driver to easily cycle through the various functions using the left thumb. Some of the features can also be accessed via the multifunction steering wheel. There is a sharp colour display in the instrument cluster as well that lets you scroll through various screens, including a trip computer, numerous programmable vehicle settings, as well
as the audio system status and more. Overall fit and finish is immaculate and the standard equipment list with features like Radio/USB/Mp3/iPod/Aux compatible multimedia system, climate control, automatic headlight and wipers, ECO start/stop, electronic parking brake, etc is solid without being lavish. The front seats are comfortable and get electronic adjustment with memory function for both front seats. While there’s plenty of space in the front of the GLA, headroom and legroom is quite limited in the back. The bench seat backrest also split-folds flat, allowing the quite acceptable 421 litre boot space

to climb to 1235 litres. The GLA gets 7 airbags as standard and other safety equipment includes Attention Assist, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Anti-Lock Braking System, Hill Start Assist, Electronic Stability Program, Anti-Slip Regulation, Collision Prevention Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Pre-Safe, Attention Assist, Active Bonnet and Brake Assist.
PERFORMANCE
The 2.2 litre turbo-diesel engine puts out 134bhp of power and 300nm of torque to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch
automatic with paddle shift. To save space on the central console the gear selection lever is on the right-hand side behind the steering wheel, but there’s also the chance of confusing it with the wiper or high beam stalk. Getting used to the low slung driving position does take some time, and moving around in heavy traffic can be a nightmare without getting well accustomed to the blind spots. The motor provides good performance, but there is a bit of lag beyond the narrow 1500-3500 rpm range and it doesn’t feel particularly quick. The gearbox feels decent with cogs working their way in a synchronised matter. Nevertheless, the manual mode via steering wheel paddles is fun if you are feeling enthusiastic. But when you drive more enthusiastically, a tiny delay in the system can be felt before the gearbox gets to speed during sudden overtaking manoeuvres. The GLA responds quickly to steering inputs, which makes it feel impressively agile. With its low-slung stance body roll is well contained even when pushed hard and it drives just like a car rather than a perched up SUV. Brakes are sharp and bite well with good stopping power. The GLA’s suspension do a good job of soaking up the bumps that our roads offer in abundance and ground clearance is sufficient to tackle most broken down stretch of roads. But with just frontwheel drive, you wouldn’t want to take on anything seriously off-road.

VERDICT
So is the Mercedes GLA 200 CDI really a truly capable SUV? Well, not exactly. With its front-wheel drive format, the GLA is more of a compact soft roader for urban city slickers who are highly unlikely to drive off the pavement. So being one of the most affordable cars in the Mercedes-Benz line up and a practical one for Nepal with its great balance between useable performance and fuel efficiency, the Mercedes GLA 200 CDI is indeed a well-rounded vehicle to start off the 'three pointed star' experience. Still if power and performance is something which rocks your boat, Mercedes also has the super-tuned all-wheel drive GLA 45 AMG under whose hood is one of the most powerful 4-cylinder production engine that produces 355 bhp of power and 450 nm of torque to propel it to 100 kmph in a mere 4.8 seconds.

anting that high tech, ultra futuristic feel while still lugging around in your ‘92 Corolla is a big ask, but Navdy might just be the thing to do that. Navdy is a voice and gesture controlled heads-up display that serves as a stepping stone to the modernization of technology in the automotive sector. The said heads up display is super imposed on the windshield showing the normal assortment of vehicle speed, engine rpm, warning lights along with navigation directions, phone calls, texts and more. It streams off an iOS or Android Smartphone via Bluetooth and Navdy's dedicated apps. Once the device is synced with your iPhone or Android handset and place the Navdy onto your car's dashboard, you can start communicating with your vehicle and other people without ever taking your eyes off the road. With a built-in infrared (IR) camera, you can use gestures to answer a call by swiping left or dismiss a notification by swiping right. You can

do all this without getting distracted from the task at hand, which is important considering the fact that you will be driving on busy roads. And since the HUD meshes with your OS and downloaded apps, any notification your phone receives— from maps, messengers, social media, calendars, or music streaming services—can be displayed, read aloud, or disabled by the machine. The HUD projects a transparent image into the driver's field of view, alerts and turn-by-turn directions appear to be floating 2 meters in front of you. The on-screen navigation system doesn't disappear when a call comes in, so you can keep following directions while chatting hands-free with a friend about your ETA. With a dual-core processor running Android 4.4 KitKat, the Navdy boasts Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, an accelerometer, e-compass, and an ambient light sensor, as well as an audio-out mini-jack and a mini-USB port. Navdy is available now to pre order and shipping will begin in 2015 at a price of $499.

Sedans are not compact and easy to maneuver around traffic in the way hatchbacks are, nor do they have the capabilities of an SUV to munch through less than accommodating roads. Clearly, they are not the best suited vehicles for Nepali roads. But that’s not why you get a sedan, is it? Someone looking for that sheer feel of class, luxury and exclusivity will find it all in a good sedan; typically the ones which are not one carved out from an SUV or hatchback. Any vehicle, in order to be crowned a capable sedan, should be up to the above task.

Suzuki already has a strong presence in the budget-hatchback segment and is definitely one of the strongest contenders. But the full and midsized family sedan section of the market already has a few strong contestants like Honda, Hyundai and Volkswagen who already have a head start with their City, Verna and Vento. After a mediocre performance from their SX4 in the past, Suzuki has rolled out probably their strongest challenger yet to slug it out. Behold, The Ciaz. THE EXTERIORS Size wise, the Ciaz is pretty much the same size as the SX4. But unlike the SX4 which was taller and looked slightly dated, the Ciaz is lower slung which gives it a sleeker appearance. It has been built on a new platform and features clean neutral styling which does not look too busy. A massive 4-slat grille graces the front of the massive hood complemented with large sweeping projector head lights and round fog lamps on the bumper. From the side, it is evident that it has a longer wheel base than its competitors, but it still maintains a proportionate look, which is further accentuated with the 16 alloys. The ground clearance rounds off to a nice 170mm, which is once again more than its competitors’. The roof flows smoothly into the back which facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
holds a striking resemblance to the Honda City, which the Ciaz has made it its own. THE INTERIORS You enter the car via keyless entry, thanks to the smartkey you have in your pocket. Inside, the large spacious cabin is instantly noticeable. The Ciaz insists on keeping it simple with a combination of black and beige colour mix with tasteful faux wood touches. The fine finish and attention to detail in the Ciaz certainly help put complaints about unrefined budget interiors of some Suzuki models to rest. The dashboard is straight forward with a three-spoke steering wheel which offers tilt adjustment and also features integrated buttons for audio and telephony. There is plenty of leg room of both front and rear passengers, thanks to the wide wheelbase. Driver seat and seat belts are height adjustable. The ABC pedals are properly spaced out and there is a raised dead pedal area to rest your left foot. There are new dials in the instrument cluster which are easily visible and easy to read. The multi information display (MID) shows real-time & average fuel economy, distance to

empty counter, temperature & time. However, the highlight of the interiors is the 7” touchscreen of the “Smart play infotainment system” which doubles as a reversing camera and navigation system. It gives the user a plethora of functions including AUX, USB, and Bluetooth connectivity along with video playback via SD card USB. The system supports smartphone integration and has an SMS readout function in addition to voice commands. Below it is the display and controls for climate control which works effectively in maintaining the temperature of the cabin. It also boasts of the largest boot space in the category. PERFORMANCE Pushing the engine start button with the clutch depressed brings the 1.4 liter K-series petrol motor into life. Shift into gear and you’re ready to utilize the 91bhp offered by the Ciaz, which is ample for the sedan. The engine made its debut in the Ertiga but this has been further upgraded with higher compression ratio and a tweaked ECU. It won’t plaster you to your seat but it is quick off the mark and makes easy work of overtaking vehicles that don’t seem to be in a hurry. 58
AUTOLIFE December 2014
Comfort is where the Ciaz excels. The soft suspensions soak up the bumps, which are a plenty in our roads, and doesn’t complain while doing it. On the highway the steering wheel weighs up nicely and it feels well grounded and is at home at straights. Cornering isn’t its strongest suit but still isn’t something to really nag about. Braking is also very good in the Ciaz, and you feel the bite before the pedal has traveled too far down. Brake hard and it doesn’t lose composure.
IT WON’T PLASTER YOU TO YOUR SEAT BUT IT IS QUICK OFF THE MARK AND MAKES EASY WORK OF OVERTAKING VEHICLES THAT DON’T SEEM TO BE IN A HURRY. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
VERDICT The Ciaz is everything you’d look for in a family sedan; however, it is not built for performance enthusiasts. On the features front, Suzuki has left no stone unturned, loading up this sedan with everything a driver or passenger could require. Another plus point is the fact that it isn’t a compact sedan. There is plenty of room inside the cabin and the Ciaz hasn’t had to compromise on the aesthetic appeals either. Suzuki have played it safe and stayed pretty neutral on the performance and designs aspect but not so much as to compromise on customer satisfaction. In fact, it might just be one of the forerunners in the 2015 best sellers. Amongst the existing Suzuki line up, the Ciaz is definitely the one that deserves the limelight.

FUTURE OF THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY IN NEPAL

In our country, people have the want, desire, as well as the resources but due to taxes and unavailability of all brands, the auto industry hasn’t been able to bloom to its fullest. The future of auto industry is bright but in our country people can’t spend their own money. Also, auto companies should promote their company through good campaigns and not by speading negativity about their competitors.

AUTOLIFE December 2014
In my opinion, the future of auto industry in Nepal is very promising. If we look back a few years, our country has improved in various aspects, with which the auto industry too has flourished. But the potential for the industry to reach a whole different level is still there. Many things are not in our hands, especially unstable government and the infrastructural development of our country. If the political situation of our country is under control and we have our constitution, then only will our country’s GDP increase which will automatically benefit the whole country and not just the auto industry.
UDEEP SHRESTHA, DIRECTOR Turbo Motors Pvt Ltd - Ducati
Nepal is definitely looking at a brighter future, not just in the auto industry in fact. With positive economic and political corrections in the pipeline the auto industry in Nepal should expect to see incremental growth in the future.
SAURABH JYOTI, DIRECTOR
Syakar Trading Company Pvt Ltd Honda
Currently petroleum import is the highest in our country, closing in on Rs. 100 billion. It looks like we might be crossing that amount in the next year, which for us as members of the auto industry, is a major concern. It is also something that plays a major role in our trade deficit. Taking into consideration the financial repercussions and the effect pollution has on our environment; it is high time that the importance of hybrid cars should be taken seriously. The government has agreed to a 25% tax concessions on Hybrids on customs duty. We were asking for a 50% deduction and no excise duty, but this is also a good start. We need to promote more environment friendly as well as fuel efficient vehicles for sustainable development not just in passenger vehicles but public vehicles as well. This is the future.

Back in 1970, when the indestructible Land Rover brand first introduced the Range Rover Classic, the idea of luxury off-roaders was still a laughable concept. Fast forward to today, and it is no longer a laughing matter, because Range Rovers are now the epitome of luxury SUVs all around the world and continue to serve as the benchmark in this segment. But the thing with extravagant luxuries is that they are perched way too high, even beyond the reach of some well-to-do people. And, this is exactly why Landie came up with the Range Rover Evoque. Launched in 2011, the Evoque is one of the finest evolution in the Range Rover series that comes packed to the gills with similar luxurious appointments, but is a less expensive and scaled down version of the barrel-chested flagship Range Rover. So when we were told about the first one to arrive here in the country, a 2013 Range Rover Evoque SD4 in Dynamic trim, we had to pull some strings and pamper ourselves in the luxury.

EXTERIOR STYLING Draped in the futuristic and conceptlike version of the iconic Range Rover silhouette, there really is nothing that looks quite like the Range Rover Evoque on the road. The Evoque is a tasteful and well-proportioned crossover that delivers style in spades. The front end is aggressive with the chunky bumper and thin headlights. The large flared wheel arches and a strong shoulder add on to its muscular stance and the 19-inch wheels match perfectly. The sloping roofline slick back stylishly towards the sporty spoiler and give the Evoque that always moving forward stance. The contrasting roof colour is an icing on the cake. The rear end compliments the aggressiveness of the front valance with the small glass area, mean looking 3D tails lights and stubby twin exhausts. Rest assured you are going to look damn good when pulling up in the charismatic compact crossover SUV. 64
AUTOLIFE December 2014
INTERIOR DESIGN The interior of the Evoque is even more attractive than its exterior. The cabin is built with top-notch materials and as soon as you enter the car you get that premium vibe. The spacious seats are trimmed in high quality two-tone leather materials with contrast stitching and set before an attractively laid-out dash. An 8-inch touch screen control unit is fitted prominently in the centre of the dash and there is also a 5-inch driver's multi-information display, which displays information about the vehicle, behind the controlsequipped steering wheel. Up on the roof, a massive fixed panoramic moonroof with power blinds introduces a sense of space in the compact cabin and lets in the much needed

lighting. With the low roof, you’d expect the rear to be cramped, but it comfortably sits three and the boot size is respectable at 550 litres. Fold the rear seats forward and you have 1350 litres of volume. Other features on the Dynamic trim include a 17-speaker 825 Watt Meridian Surround Sound System with Radio/Mp3/USB/iPod/ Bluetooth compatibility, rear parking aid, keyless entry system, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear seat entertainment package, electrically adjustable driver/passenger seats with memory function, configurable mood lighting options, adaptive and automatic Xenon HID headlights with LED signature lighting, rain sensing windscreen wipers, heated external power mirrors and adaptive cruise control. Safety equipment includes driver, passenger, knee, side and thorax Airbags, as well as Isofix child seat fixings, Electronic Stability Control, Anti-lock Braking System, Dynamic Stability Control, Traction Control System, Roll Stability Control, Engine Drag Torque Control, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Emergency Brake Assist, Trailer Stability Assist and Hazard Warning Lights under heavy braking. the features like the power tailgate, surround-view camera system and puddle lamps that project a Range Rover Evoque silhouette graphic are particularly impressive. To sum it up, the Evoque’s cabin is very upscale and luxurious. All the Range Rover styling cues are there, but with a younger and sportier feel. PERFORMANCE Inside, the driving position is spot on and you get a commanding view of the road ahead. Once the key fob is detected, you can press the start button and a rotary gearshift dial dramatically rises from the centre console. Power makes it to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission, with paddle shifters that offer some manual control. The Evoque feels peppy once the turbo is spooled and the engine’s willingness to please is impressive. On paper, the Evoque is not a very powerful car, but it never feels out of breath and instantly provides as much speed as you need. For an enthusiastic driving session, the Sport mode provides the right amount of punch and interestingly gives the interior an intense red glow with the gauges following suit. With the limited speed runs on the Arniko Highway, I can't really attest to its performance at high speeds. But in the urban environment, it did feel agile and sprightly. While it doesn’t pack a powerful V8 or even a V6 for that matter, the eager fourcylinder gets the job done.
equipped this baby Range Rover with the company’s signature Terrain Response feature, which allows the driver to adjust the electronic throttle and driveline systems in various surfaces ranging from normal, mud and ruts, sand to snow. Rather than shifting, drivers need to just press the corresponding buttons located on the centre console below the gear dial. Then there's a suite of traction and stability systems like Electronic Traction Control, Dynamic Stability Control and Hill Descent Control. Though it sure can't match the offroad prowess of the full-size Range Rover, the Evoque will definitely be more capable off-road than any other luxury compact SUV. After all, it’s a Land Rover at heart.

On the move, it's got a smooth ride and handles fine on the road. Hammer it down a broken stretch of road and it does not lose its composure, take it on a twisty road at respectable speeds and it doesn't roll or wobble. Handling is very car-like with its lightweight small dimensions. The steering is light and it's pretty precise. Rearward visibility is hampered by the shallow side windows and letterbox-like rear window, but the surround-view camera system, which uses multiple cameras to transmit a 360-degree real time view around the Evoque is helpful during parking and close traffic encounters. VERDICT Land Rovers are popularly known around the world for their extraordinary ability, unrivalled strength and durability in extreme conditions. But the major downside to most people owning a Range Rover is that they never really fully experience its capabilities as an offroad machine. So the compact Evoque with similar levels of craftsmanship, luxury, technology, performance and renowned Land Rover multiterrain capability in a more affordable package does make for a more sensible purchase. Plus, this is the lightest and most fuel efficient Range Rover ever made. Simply put, the Range Rover Evoque is not only good to look at, but fun to drive as well. So if you have the money to spare, do yourself a favour and buy one. And if you are cash strapped like me, let's dream together.

A few months earlier, we test rode the beautiful F3 675. As ultra-sophisticated as it was, it took a while to get comfortable with the raw nature of the motorcycle. For the naked counterpart of the F3, things came more naturally. It was a different beast that had the same beating heart, an inline 675cc 3 cylinder engine with a whole lot to offer.
STYLING had covered every inch of my body with leather and jeans the best I could, taking care to not leave any bit of skin exposed. Still, the unrelenting chills of the November morning managed to sneak in through the crevices of my jacket. Any other day, I would have complained about the cold and the early hour. But this was different. The sun was yet to surface and the silent darkness that engulfed the deserted streets was broken only by the headlights and the throaty rumble of the MV Agusta Brutale 675. I welcomed every bit of what this morning had to offer. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
The naked styling of the Brutale line is precise and purposeful, which has made it a yardstick for other high displacement naked motorcycles. This mid-weight in the family is the Brutale 675, which we had with us for the day. Based on the fully faired F3, the Brutale 675 is aesthetically pleasing and exudes a sporty edge. At a cool 184 kgs with all tanks full, the Brutale is a light weight amongst big bikes, but is still a powerhouse to contend with.
A head turner in every sense of the word, the MV Agusta Brutale 675 deserves all of the attention it received.
Up front is a large unique headlight which is integrated well with the front suspension which is a non-adjustable but well-tuned Marzocchi 43mm inverted fork. Its fuel tank is AUTOLIFE December 2014 71
beautifully shaped with large clean aggressive cuts that help establish a strong confident demeanor for the Brutale which is further accentuated with its exposed steel trellis frame. The wide handle bars, which are slightly lower and more angled, provide a great riding position that finds a sweet balance between a comfortable ride and an aggressive race. Switch placements, reminiscent of the F3, requires a little time to get used to; but that is not something you would really complain about. On the console are arrays of facilities that help ascertain its position as one of the most technologically advanced middle weight amongst the two wheelers in the market. The one central pod also displays the Clock, Lap Timer, Riding Modes, Traction Control, Gear Position, Speedometer, Tachometer and Tripmeter. The Brutale features the option of 4 en-
gine modes which you can change by pressing the ignition button once the engine starts. The normal setting gives neutral throttle response and a medium Traction Control setting, the sport mode sharpens throttle response and backs off the TC while the rain mode does the opposite. Custom can be set however you like. For a super sport, the ergonomics of the machine is extremely comfortable. It is compact with a short wheelbase, a low saddle and a narrow midsection which makes it easy for average/short riders to plant their feet on the ground; one of the prime things that help make the Brutale less intimidating than the name suggests. At the rear, the Brutale is equipped with a preload adjustable Sachs shock and teamed with an aluminum single-sided swingarm. The tail end is minimalistic in the Brutale 675, it keeps it simple with a red led light and Trepistoni proudly written on its slim rear cowl. What isn’t as silent is the golden triple pipe side exit exhaust that surfaces from the under belly and on to the right side of the Brutale. A head turner in every sense of the word, the MV Agusta Brutale 675 deserves all of the attention it received. We hardly ever get the amount of notice as we did with the Brutale. But, then again, a rumbling beast roaming the grounds of Basantapur Square in the morning isn’t always a common happening.

PERFORMANCE
Riding the MVAgusta Brutale 675 inspires confidence, which isn’t something you can say about most big bikes. Don’t get me wrong, this is still a motorcycle that packs enough punch to give you shaky legs. It is differently tuned from the F3 and is slightly milder in nature and the compression ratio has been reduced from 13.0:1 to 12.3:1. But it still belts out a healthy claimed 110 hp at 12,500 rpm and 65NM of torque at 12,000 rpm. Pair this with its rider friendly ergonomics and that translates to a blisteringly fast bike that begs you to let rip the throttle. Igniting the engine, the hoarse three cylinder tune spread a smile across my face. I waited for the digital display to settle into idle only to shift into gear and let the tachometer flicker across in a flash. In doing so, the motorcycle propelled forward with eagerness that would make any rider grin. The Brutale pulls from the lowest rev and feels even more powerful from 5000 rpm onward. Pushing it even further, the howling exhaust note accompanied me to the triple digits and beyond within seconds. All that speed and power combined with superbly easy handling came as a surprise. MV has notoriety for being an acquired taste, and not something you feel comfortable with on the first go. The Brutale 675

changed everything. There was no jerkiness or lag on the sharp ride-bywire throttle system. Thundering through open roads was expected to be an easy task for the machine, but what I did not expect was the ease with which it took on the urban traffic. It was surefooted and nimble, to an extent that you normally don’t ask from super sport machines. Cornering on the Brutale was also a joy, thanks to its friendly ergonomics. Braking was also spot on. The 320mm front disks are the same as those employed on the F3 and offer incredible controlled stopping power. The best technology currently available is utilized on the MV Agusta Brutale 675, including Brembo radial calipers and Nissin master cylinders with integrated. A hard but comfy seat combined with a suspension that soaks up minor bumps makes this MV a good ride for long hauls. However, in stone paved or bumpy roads, you will be bouncing around a lot. But it is a price I would be willing to pay.

VERDICT
The Brutale 675 is an agile super sport that fills the shoes of a more practical version of the F3. It is a treat for any motorcycle enthusiast; it is sporty and aggressive when you want to satisfy your speed demon but it will also don a practical personality when the situation requires it to. Not to take anything away from its fully faired equivalent, but the Brutale 675 gets a lot of points in terms of throttle responsiveness and ease of riding. It shows no sign of jerkiness or lags whatsoever, and is not a snatchy ordeal. If you are looking for that raw MV Agusta feel though, you might be disappointed. But as a sane super sport motorcycle, the 675 ticks all the right boxes. It took on the roads of Kathmandu, heavy traffic included, with ease. On the bends and straights to the way to Dhulikhel, it showed even more enthusiasm. And thanks to the comfortable positioning and ergonomics of the Brutale, my body didn’t ache at the end of the day. Was it worth waking up before the rooster crows to test ride this machine? Yes, and I would do it a hundred times over. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

The lens is ideal for day and night driving because it provides a great visual contrast of colors and reduces the effect of glare from the sun, reducing the blue of the natural light that overlaps with other colors. Each color develops its maximum potential, with a surprising contrast effect, especially in poor visibility conditions (fog, darkness, dusk, tunnels). The Drive polycarbonate lens is unbreakable, has very high impact strength and is extremely light. Both lens surfaces are treated with an anti-reflective, scratch-resistant and water repellent.

POLARIZED
Many surfaces reflect the sun’s rays like a mirror (glass, water, snow), amplifying the ray’s intensity. It is therefore necessary to adopt a good protection for your eyes against these glares. These polarized glasses selectively eliminate the effect of blinding light. The day light travels in waves that oscillate in all directions. The light polarizing travels on a two-dimensional basis: horizontal and vertical. Vertical light brings information to the eye, allowing you to see colors and contrasts, while horizontal light creates visual disturbances such as glare. The polarized lens blocks the light polarized horizontally, filter and lets through only light that can be better absorbed by the eye. In addition, the lens intensifies contrasts and enhances the perception of colors.

GNARLY ON A ROLL
Cycling is no longer confined to the likes of night guards, paperboys, fruit vendors and milkmen. Slowly but surely the rest are taking up biking for commuting, recreation and competitive sport. The lifestyle is gaining momentum, so it is then to accelerate the paradigm shift in cycling that the idea of Gnarly was conceived by two passionate mountaineer bikers. Text by Gnarly Biking (www.gnarlybiking.com)
A
group of cyclists pedal their way up along the Trishuli Highway, a chilly winter morning does little to deter. They join no less than a couple of dozen cyclists hogging down aalu chana by a bonfire at Bhuwan Dai’s Khaja Pasal at Mudkhu’s popular biking checkpoint. Some twenty kilometers away, more than two hundred mountain bikers have convened in front of Shivapuri National Park’s gate at Mulpani, Budhanilkantha. They are protesting an overnight hundred-fold price hike in entry fees for cyclists (from Rs. 10 to Rs. 1,000). Likewise, a clan of commuters takes to the streets near Tudikhel at the Critical Mass rally to make with sheer numbers their presence felt and with their dazzling night lights, their presence seen by vehicles in urban 86

streets. Meanwhile, clad in wind cheaters and multiple layers of thermals, tourists huff and puff against dry winds on arid trails of Manang, crossing the Thorung La Pass on their mountain bikes. These are but mere snapshots of the burgeoning cycling community in Nepal. And the evidence is clear: Mountain biking, as we know it, is transforming into a mainstream activity. To build on this momentum, two mountain bikers have brought forth the idea of harnessing leisure cycling, professional training, racing events and athlete management into what has manifested into Gnarly Biking. GNARLY WHO? Gnarly came into existence in October 2015 when Shyam Limbu and Anuj facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
Adhikary, avid cyclists and outdoor bugs, came up with a simple idea – to nurture cycling through a comprehensive approach. It stems out of the budding cycling scene not merely for utility and recreation, but equally in competitive sport and tourism. “It always bewilders people when I tell them that I ride bicycles for a living,” says Shyam, a mountain biking guide. “Taking clients to the trails and showing them a good time on bikes is all I can dream of. Luckily, I get to do that for a living!” Anuj shares a similar story, “My grandfather still thinks that cycling is a phase, though it’s been well more than a decade since I’ve been bitten. The rest of my family and friends are no exceptions.” The duo draw from their prior experiences and what they specialize in – Shyam in product development, and Anuj in business strategy – to bring Gnarly to its operational form. BLENDING FUN AND KARMA Firmly rooted in its modus operandi of merging social and business models, Gnarly uses cycling as a medium to make a positive mark in the society. “In our mission to create a thriving cycling community and bring about a social reform, we are committed to provide professional biking skills training to female cyclists and at-risk youth,” explains Anuj. Furthermore, internship and employment opportunities to deserving candidates at Gnarly and partnering companies further encourage trainees to pursue cycling seriously. “Through such incentives, we hope to prepare the trainees for this sector and help them pursue their passion, much like we have pursued ours.” Likewise, a certain portion of Gnarly’s returns is allocated for financing training programs for the beneficiaries.
BUT WHAT EXACTLY DOES GNARLY DO? “Well, we have four distinct products and programs: Events, Trips, Training and Athlete Management,” points out Anuj. “All these are aligned carefully to create a holistic approach to developing and promoting mountain biking.” Events Team Gnarly has been a core part of several widely acclaimed races, including Lifecycle DH Race, Lamatar MTB Race and Palpa Urban DH Race – all of which also saw international participation. “We feel races are imperative to create a healthy competitive environment as well as to give aspiring cyclists an opportunity to get noticed,” states race organizer guru Shyam. “Therefore, we plan to organize several races each year focusing on different genres of mountain biking like cross-country, downhill, all-mountain, BMX, inter-school and even duathlons.
In whatever we do, the safety of the participants gets the most priority.” Gnarly’s upcoming event Showdown Dharan 2015’s preparation is going into full swing for downhill and cross-country action taking place in the gorgeous Eastern city. Save the date for a glamorous meet where professional and amateur riders alike are all set to blaze rough trails. Trips Nepal has fast gained its due reputation as a mountain biking mecca, and the rising influx of cycling tourists prove just that. So much so that there is now a supply deficit of qualified and professional mountain biking guides in the industry. Nonetheless, experienced guides from Gnarly lead day trips and overnight trips in the mountains as well as in Kathmandu valley. Whether long tours, reveling in spectacular views of the countryside or just an
“We’re quite pleased to take the initiative to encourage cycling among women,” says Shyam. “In fact, we’re providing cycling workshops to ladies, focusing mainly on basic riding skills like shifting gear, braking and pedaling uphill. We want to ensure safety among newcomers.” Conducted by professional cyclists at Gnarly, such brief workshops are free for female riders who are interested in the sport. Among a handful of trainees preparing rigorously for their biking career are Nishma Shrestha, 18, Saria Sato, 16, homemaker Hama Shyam, 23, and Juria Bajracharya, 14. “They’re all doing quite well and we hope to have more ladies train with us.” facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

easy ride within the valley, visiting several interesting temples and villages - there are several trips Gnarly can design for cycling enthusiasts. The most popular destinations include Upper Mustang, Jomsom Muktinath and Annapurna Circuit, as well as other off-beat cycling routes like Hetauda, Palpa and Ilam. Training Gnarly organizes training camps for schools, colleges, corporate houses and individuals, from beginners to advanced riders. Conducted by visiting professionals and developed in conjunction with mavericks like Seven Summit Women, these robust outdoors curriculum target school-level children and adults alike in cycling, trail running and climbing. Gnarly also plans to set up a training facility with basic cardio and weight equipment in Kathmandu, then eventually in higher altitudes for more rigorous training. Besides physical training, Gnarly also focuses on soft skills like languages, computer and public speaking. “We want to give the youth

the opportunity to engage in adventure activities so that those who are interested in this field can take it up as profession,” says Shyam citing his own experiences as a biking guide. Athlete Management As heartbreaking as it is true, most of our elite athletes – cyclists no exception – have had to give up sports and emigrate for labor work. “This is a forgone talent and wasted potential of our nation,” says Anuj, who heads the athlete management front. So as to help athletes sustain themselves through sponsorships and endorsements, Gnarly mobilizes its resources and marketing channels to manage several downhill and cross-country cyclists as well as trail runners.” Developing and maintaining athletes’ websites and promotional collaterals; grooming them to handle sponsors and media queries; and escorting athletes in national and international races are some of the major tasks Gnarly is involved in.
Though launched very recently, Gnarly is already on a roll with a series of highend races lined up for 2015. The robust programs are set to redefine and raise standards of mountain biking in Nepal while directly empowering female riders and underprivileged youth. Rest assured, Gnarly is on full throttle earning karma points and putting fun between the legs. After all, WE <3 MTB! So gear up and hop aboard, folks! It’s time to hit the trails!
