EDITORIAL PURE FUN!
W
We’ve got a hot issue on our hands this month because it seems that the automotive gods were kind to us and we had the opportunity to get our hands on some of the most sought after machines in the country. First off we have on the cover a beast of a machine, the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V. The successor to the Apache RTR 180, TVS set the bar high with the race ready RTR 180, and they promise the new version share the same gene. We had the opportunity to see if it lived up to the promise and we made sure we brought the action to you. Secondly, we received the keys to the Renault Duster. A car that got a colossal amount of attention at the recent NADA Autoshow, we were eager to put the compact sedan to the test. We ended up pushing it to its limits on one of the most fun test drives which you’ll get to check out inside. The year 2073 has been touted as the travel year and although we were late to catch up we squeezed in a road trip that we made to Morang. It involved plenty of riding fun along with some gluttony with which we went slightly overboard. Keeping in lieu to the traveling spirit we have what could possibly be the ultimate tourers for Nepal. We test ride the Royal Enfield Himalayan and the Kia Carnival Grand Tourer. Both machines that are adept for long hauls, it was a pleasure to test them out. There is plenty more to keep you busy in this issue of AutoLife, and we hope you enjoy going through it. Till next time. Cheers.

The Soul EV has a fun-to-drive character. Its electric motor develops 109bhp in a combustion-engined model - with 285 Nm of torque available immediately upon drive-away. This makes the Soul EV particularly brisk in the kind of stop-start urban driving where it is designed to operate. It is also extremely smooth and silent - so quiet that it is fitted with a Virtual Engine Sound system at low speeds in both forward and reverse gears to alert pedestrians and cyclists that it is in the vicinity. The Soul EV is the result of almost 30 years of research and development by Kia into the feasibility of electric cars. All those years of research have endowed the Soul EV with a range of up to 132 miles (212 kilometres) on a single charge. The Soul EV has a top speed of 145 kmph and can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 10.8 seconds, so it is perfectly capable of keeping pace with the flow of urban traffic. OWNER’S REVIEW
We would like to take this opportunity to share my ownership experience of the Tata Bolt. When we decided that we needed a new car, we were convinced that we needed a car with maximum legroom and generous boot-space with the latest of features at a fair price. Since we have a baby we needed a spacious back seat to keep the baby supplies and the baby seat. The Bolt is our first car. We are extremely satisfied with the overall looks of the car. The expansive cabin room ensures that you stay comfortable and completely stress free as you zoom down the street. The drive quality of Bolt is great. We are quite satisfied with Sipradi Trading for their generous pre-sales and aftersales service. Overall, the Tata Bolt is a good value for money car with decent looks, performance and comfort. We would definitely recommend the Bolt to others wanting to buy a new hatchback.

with minimal power usage, which all contribute towards its long range. It can climb slopes of up to one-in-three. Whenever the driver coasts or brakes, kinetic energy (energy caused by motion), which is normally wasted, is captured and channeled into the batteries through the regenerative braking system. The Soul EV’s range is therefore constantly being topped up on the move, particularly in urban traffic where stops and restarts are frequent. The KIA Soul EV features a modern two-tone color scheme, blue-accented projector beam headlamps, and LED rear lamps that offer stunning visibility. To help the driver maximise the car’s range, the Soul EV has two different performance levels - DRIVE and BRAKE - both of which can additionally be operated in ECO mode as a further means of extending the car’s range. The Soul EV, like any other Soul, is therefore a compact but spacious five-seat crossover with a large boot accessed through a wide-opening, high-lift tailgate. Luggage capacity is 281 litres - a reduction of 31 litres compared with other versions of the Soul because the luggage undertray is used to house both charging cables. With the 60:40 split rear seats lowered, luggage capacity is 891 litres. The standard specifications include cruise control with a speed limiter, an electronic parking brake, front and rear electric windows, electrically folding adjustable heated door mirrors with LED indicators, solar glass for the windscreen and front windows, automatic light control with a follow-me-home function, LED rear combination and high-mounted brake lights, a 3.5-inch OLED supervision instrument cluster with specific EV information display, a trip computer, front speaker mood lights, driver’s seat height adjustment, a heated steering wheel, front and rear parking sensors and a luggage cargo screen plus retaining net. Safety is taken care of by Anti-lock Brakes with Emergency Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control, Vehicle Stability Management, Hill-start Assist, Emergency Stop Signalling, a Tyre Pressure Monitoring system and six airbags.

AUTOLIFE TEST DRIVE
KICKING Renault Duster WORDS & PHOTO: AUTOLIFE TEAM
The Renault Duster has been one of the most anticipated products to enter Nepal. The agonizing wait worsened as our neighbors down south enjoyed it while we kept our fingers crossed and hoped it would one come into our market. The Renault Duster seemed like the compact SUV we always wanted, one that didn’t look like a compact SUV and leaned more towards the real deal. In fact, it pioneered the segment altogether. We were finally put out of our misery when the Renault brand name finally entered Nepal under their distributors Advance Automobiles Pvt. Ltd. and brought along with it the KWID and Duster. Now the KWID was fun and we had a blast, but it was the Duster we were most excited about. By the looks of it, the consumers were pretty amped too. By our observation, it was one of the most sought after entries at this year’s NADA Auto Show which had people flocking to their stall. But we won’t dilly dally for too long. We were excited to get our hands on the Duster and we’re pretty sure you want to know how it fared on our test drive. We had the keys to the 1.5L diesel engine, so let’s dive right into it.

EXTERIOR
The Renault Duster shuns the image of the puny compact SUV and commands a burly SUV stance. With its flared wheel arches, short front and rear overhangs and impressive 205mm ground clearance the Duster successfully looks bigger than it actually is. There is very little messing about with the styling and that is just how we like our SUV like compact SUVs to look like. Stare it down and you’re confronted with the squarish double-barrel headlights and a heavy chrome-rich grille. DRLs would have been a nice addition though. To boast of its offroad capabilities the Renault Duster has the scuff plate and plastic cladding on the lower portion of the bumper where the fog lamps round out the entire image. The bonnet gets subtle contours which run onto the edges of the windscreen. Its monocoque construction also allows it to sit lower than conventional body-on-ladder SUVs and that is prominent when you look at it from the sides. The Duster runs on simple but beautiful black alloy wheels with a red Renault badge in the center. The rear upholds the ruggedness and refrains from adding too many frills to the design. The vertically inclined tail-lamps get a very distinctive S-shaped LED signature which does give the brake lights a unique look. A block of chrome brandishes the Duster name on the rear.

ALTHOUGH IT DOESN’T HAVE THE BIGGEST OF ENGINES THE 108BHP THAT IT CHURNS OUT IS PLENTY TO PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE. things simple. The dark dash is spruced with generous dabs of chrome on the air con vents and steering wheel. Ingress and egress is easy and there is plenty of room to fit in three large adults in the rear seat. The driving position is well suited for a comfortable drive and you even get an armrest. The Duster name is embossed onto the glovebox. The center console gets central air con vents under which a touchscreen display is placed. You also get controls for the AC along with automatic climate control. The Duster gets a MediaNAV touchscreen infotainment system that is also mated to a rearview camera. The touch feels satisfactorily responsive but the screen itself isn’t that crisp and under bright sunlight, it gets a bit difficult to read. With no third row of seats to eat into boot space as with seven-seat SUVs, the Renault Duster has plenty of space for your luggage.
PERFORMANCE
With a lot of options to choose from, we got our hands on the Duster that came with Renault’s popular 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine with manual transmission and AWD option. Although it doesn’t have the biggest of engines the 108BHP that it churns out is plenty to put a smile on your face. The motor lugs along with ease and it pulls well on steep inclines even with a packed cabin. To get the most out of this engine, you need to stay within the 2000-4000rpm band. We pushed the Duster to the limits and it did not flinch once. The 210mm ground clearance inspires confidence on rougher terrains which is facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

great and further helps it maintain a strong position amongst compact SUVs. The suspension makes easy work of road undulations in a calm manner and you won’t be deterred by minor craters on the road. Thanks to its wide stance and low center of gravity it boasts immense stability providing great body control that contains the body roll well. Steering is responsive and is easy at lower speeds. It isn’t the most agile of beasts but it does a good job nonetheless. A tight turning circle further aids the Duster’s ease of use. While it may lack four-wheel-drive hardware, even this front-wheeldrive Duster is quite adept offroad. The short gearing and the 30-degree approach and 35-degree departure angles allow the small SUV to clamber uphill with ease. The AWD version gets independent rear suspension that is a touch more supple and sure-footed but, as mentioned, it doesn’t come with an AMT option, which is only reserved for the front-wheel-drive version.
VERDICT
The lingering wait was distressing but it is finally over and the Renault Duster managed to kick up the ante. There is a considerable manliness to the Duster that doesn’t come from the frills and fancies but because of its rugged simplicity. It is definitely a looker and it performs well. We had a lot of fun ripping it across different terrains. We gave it hell and it took it with a smile. It is a great proposition for those who love driving and can do with fewer bells and whistles. Just make sure that you don’t bore it in your garage and around the cities.

Since its introduction in 2006 TVS (the third largest two-wheeler manufacturer in India) has sold nearly 2 million examples of the Apache series, proof that – it is one of the prime players in the 150-180cc motorcycle segment. Bred on the genes of TVS Racing, the Racing Throttle Response (RTR) tagline was a good example of racing heritage introduced to the mainstream. The Apache moniker smashed the performance threshold with deceptively fast machines in the small capacity sports segment in the subsequent years. Although the RTR series brought spirited performance to the masses, it fell short in front of competition as rivals moved to the 200-250cc segement. Undeterred by the competition, TVS took their own sweet time to introduce a remarkably able and modern machine in the RTR series – the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V.
S
The Apache RTR2004V is big brother to RTR160 and RTR180 but unlike those, the RTR200 is the first bike from the company to get an 4-valve engine, oil-cooling, balancer shaft, all-digital dash, KYB mono-shock suspension, Pirelli tyres (yet to be introduced in the Nepalese market) and split seats. However, the RTR 200 now sits in a segment that’s currently dominated by established rivals. So, can the RTR200 push the thrill to a whole new level? We find out

STYLING
The RTR 200 is a certified head-turner! The bodywork has been derived from Draken concept which was showcased at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo. The street-fighter inspired styling immediately grabs your attention. The front features a muscular fuel tank with sharp tank shrouds and a meaner headlamp cluster with boomerang shaped LED DRLs. The highlight of the tank is the unique off-centered fuel filter fuel cap. Clean edges best describe the bike and the street-fighter styling is not misleading. The rear gets an LED tail lamp, clear lens turn indicators and a chunky tyre. The aesthetic appeal is further accentuated by a unique looking exhaust. Termed as the ‘double barrel’ exhaust, this shotgun style exhaust produces a grunty note seeking undue attention. The 12-litre fuel tank capacity is adequate. Other visual highlights include split seats, W shaped grab-rails and a 10-spoke alloy wheels.
INSTRUMENTATION PANEL
The all-digital instrumentation console is first for a TVS bike. The feature loaded easy-to-read console provides a host of diagnostics you’d expect from a bike. There is a speedometer on the centre, fuel gauge, tachometer on the top, gear position indicator, clock and service reminder on the left and twin tripmeters, lap time recorder and acceleration time recorder on

the right. The full function LED crystal display has a generous white backlight for high visibility and shift timing light for precise gear shifting.
ERGONOMICS:
The RTR 200 has an upright riding position with an aggressive stance. The clip-on handlebar provides you enough confidence while cornering at high speeds and help you establish a connection with the bike instantly. The bike’s wheelbase (1353mm) easily compliments its ergonomically designed seat profile making it comfortable for both the rider and the pillion. The double cradle split synchro stiff frame keeps up with the RTR 200’s sporty character, complimented by capable TVS Remora tyres, (Front: 90/90 R17, Rear: 130/70 R17) and a generous ground clearance of 180mm. Suspension duty is carried out by 37mm telescopic front forks and race tuned KYB monoshock at the rear in a fairly soft yet well-tuned setup. The split-seats also come with decent under-seat storage (by motorcycle standards).
ENGINE & PERFORMANCE:
The bike we tested was a carbureted one as the fuel-injected version is yet to arrive in the Nepalese market. The naked roadster is powered by a 197.8cc, four-stroke, air and oil-cooled, facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

single-cylinder unit which make a peak power of 20.2 bhp at 8500 RPM and a torque of at 7000 RPM. The company has opted for oil-cooling with RAM air assist instead of liquid-cooling to keep heating issues at bay. The Apache series have always been powerful, as well as agile, and that remains true with the RTR200. When it comes to ride and handling, the RTR200 is a treat. The bike boosts a strong handling character with extremely responsive character. We’re impressed with how effortlessly the transmission moves between each of its five cogs. Though the 200cc oil-cooled engine only produces 20 bhp on paper, the performance on real riding conditions is much more. The throaty exhaust note is better than other bikes in this segment. Hit the throttle hard and the RTR 200 gallops like a wild stallion. Throttle response is sweet and the power band is enjoyable especially in the lower rev range. The rev-happy engine delivers a respectable and lively performance throughout the rev range. Around street and on the highway is where the RTR 200 stands out. Here it is both maneuverable and confident, which lends itself well to everyday riding. The only downside is the bike’s peak horsepower is 4 ponies down the competition. TVS claims the RTR 200 can achieve 0-60kph in 3.9 seconds. The 270mm front and 240mm rear petal disc brakes offer incredible stopping power even under harshest braking conditions. The 12-litre (including 2.5-litre reserve) fuel tank capacity is adequate. Unlike other Apaches, the engine of the 200 feels much more refined and vibration free. The RTR 200 combines impressive acceleration with agile handling making it an excellent allrounder.
VERDICT:
TVS might have ticked all the right boxes with the RTR 200. It is by far the best motorcycle in the RTR range, and it looks like TVS are heading in the right direction in the entry level performance segment. The RTR200 satisfied us with its aesthetics and versatility to our roads while not compromising on the ride quality. It fits well in the proposition of someone looking for a reasonably priced but stylish machine. At Rs 2,83,900, the Apache RTR 200 4v is impressively priced for a machine of such distinctive character. The Apache moniker just got better with the RTR 200.

AUTOLIFE EVOLUTION
[
MAJESTIC & GALLANT EVOLUTION OF MG MOTORS
[
In all honesty, we all have tried to mimic a British accent and have proceeded to say our last name before the first, and follow it up by sipping a pseudo martini, shaken not stirred. Mostly, we did it out of mockery or just to impress that one girl into thinking that you’re hi-fi and sophisticated. But all these had one common foundation, admiration. For a small island, England has been able to conquer the world and to this day hold its bragging rights. Let’s not get all political, but respect is to be given where it is due. They have been known for their smart and chic style. This includes their lifestyle, literature, fashion and cars. Yes, British cars have a shining stub in the automobile industry and GM Motors is a top name. The story begins with a young Oxford lad who was born in 1877. His name was William Richard Morris. At the tender age of 15, after finishing school he apprenticed to a local bicycle seller and repairer. However, the man would not pay him enough so he just walked out. Like any other angsty teenager full of hormones, he opened a bicycle repair shed at the back of his parents’ house. He assembled and repaired bikes in his shop and named his products The Morris. Morris was passionate about bikes, basically anything with wheels that are rideable. And he loved to ride it fast, fast enough to be named champion in Oxford, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire for distances varying between one to fifty miles. Carrying forward his passion, he began working on motorcycles in 1901, and came about to designing his first motorbike, The Morris Motor Cycle. In 1902 acquired buildings in Longwall Street from which he repaired bicycles, operated a taxi service, sold, repaired and hired cars. 8 years later, while he was building a new premise in the same area, local newspapers called his establishment the Oxford Motor Palace. Later, he proceeded to officially change it to The Morris Garage. The name’s adding up now, isn’t it?
World War I broke out and the auto industry was pushed towards the production of munitions. Morris, with the other brands, was put on hold for their car production. When the war ended the production and sales of cars went from 400 in 1919 up to 56,000 handsomely in 1925. Needless to say that the auto industry was blooming and Morris was not a dumb guy to not take advantage of this. Morris went full swing with his Bullnose in Henry Ford style. He was the pioneer to adopt the mass production in the UK. He also established facilities in Abingdon, Birmingham, and Swindon.
In 1912, Morris made his first car by assembling bought in parts from the US, The Bullnose Morris. It was a small car with a 1018 cc four-cylinder side-valve engine with fixed cylinder head. Production of it started a year later but due to insufficient funds, only a small number was manufactured in the facility. In 1914,
46
AUTOLIFE NOVEMBER 2016

During this period in 1921, Morris brought in a London man named Cecil Kimber as a sales manager. He was an engineer and giving into his passion of automobiles, he began modifying the Bullnoses. He improved them and made them faster and more sportier and this boosted sales exponentially. As a reward, he was promoted to general manager the following year and was often credited for the sports label MG is often given. In 1923, the iconic octagon logo of the brand surfaced in the media and in 1924, MG was the official trademark of the brand.
Morris, being the ambitious man he is, purchased voluntarily liquidated assets of Wolseley Motors Limited on personal finance in 1927. Wolseley was considerably ahead on the development of an overhead camshaft car. So he adopted the design and made the Morris Minor. The Minor had an 847 cc engine that could reach speeds up to 55mph. This car was not that significant, however, it acted as the base for the Morris Midget. Morris Midget is perhaps the most iconic car of the brand. First of all, it was the first genuinely affordable performance car produced by an established name. It was small, rear wheel driven, reached speeds up to 65 mph (80 on the supercharged version), had good road manners, stylish and above all, really fun to drive. The crowd loved it the moment it came out in 1928 and when it was exported to international markets, the British company rose up to be branded as a sports car company.
The 30s was a good decade for MG for it got a lot of exposure. In 1931, MG EX120 ‘The Magic Midget’ set a land speed record, becoming the first 750cc car to exceed 100, hitting a speed of 103.13mph. This was their first broken record. Two years later, the K3 Magnette won the Mille Miglia, an Italian 1000 mile race, and became the first non-Italian brand to win it. This solidified their name in sports car racing. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
In 1938, Morris was ennobled with the title of Baron of Nuffield. When war time came, productions again stopped. However in 1945, when American servicemen came to the U.K., they fell in love with the Midget. They loved it so much that they took it home with them and their countrymen could not resist the Midget. Since then America became the chief market for MG’s exports in the coming years. Though profitable as a single company, like other economies post WWII, the British economy was sinking and hence saw a need to resurrect their automobile industry. So in 1952, The BMC (not masala), British Motor Corporation MG was incorporated into one company that included its partners such as Morris and Riley alongside rivals like Austin and Wolseley.
Now, the 50’s was a stylistic landmark for mankind, and MG had a hand in it. The MGA came out in 1955 and it had a 1500 cc engine which was sheltered in a beautiful curvy body, arguably the best looking car of the era. About 100,000 units were made and more than 95,000 was exported from the UK. 2 years later, the EX181, based on the MGA, was taken to the Bonneville Salts flats as MG returned to the world of record breaking. The 1489 cc engine developed 290bhp and legendary driver Sir Stirling Moss took the car to an incredible 245.64mph. Then again, 2 years later in 1959, MG returned to the salt with American driver Phil Hill took the MG to 254.91mph breaking their previous record. AUTOLIFE NOVEMBER 2016 47
Entering a new decade, MG had another style change. Departing from the traditional separate chassis body, the monocoque was adopted. This was first given to the MGB Roadster in 1962. It was the best-selling car of MG and like always, was largely shipped to the US. It hung around until its discontinuation in 1980. Next in 1965, the MGB was given an Italian twist and the MGT was born. The new roof system of this was designed by the design bigshot Pininfarina and the same sporty look of it’s predecessor was maintained. In 1968, Leyland Motors merges with BMC to create British Leyland. Under British Leyland, MG would work alongside Jaguar, Rover and Triumph. Being part of British Leyland meant MG had access to a wider range of engines, this included the 3.5 litre Rover V8 engine. Tuner Ken Costello had begun converting the regular MGB and GT to V8 power in the early 1970s. The factory-built car launched in 1973 to popular reviews.
The 70s was not really a profitable decade for the British Leyland. The sales were poor and there were constant issues with the trade union. MG however did not suffer due to its loyal workforce. Sadly, it had to shut down its Abingdon facility due to the nationalization of the British Leyland and there was a need to save funds. Regardless of the facility’s closure, the brand was too popular to be put out of the picture. In May 1982, the MG Metro 1300 launched. It was one of the first ‘hot hatches’ and would lead the way to a faster version, the MG Metro Turbo a year later. The MG Metro proved to be a huge success and demonstrated the demand, and love, for MG motor cars. By the mid 1980s the memory of MG sports cars was beginning to fade and so Austin Rover, the then owner of MG, unveiled the MG EXE Concept, designed to remind everyone of MG’s sportscar heritage. Designed by Roy Axe, the car bore a noticeable similarity to Honda’s NSX.
The 80s saw an exponential growth in demand of MGBs, vintage sportscars in general. By 1992, MG was part of the Rover group and its portfolio was slimmed down to just Rover cars. In 1995, the MGF was launched and it was the first all-new MG sportscar since 1962. It was innovative, incorporating a mid-engine and gas suspension. It quickly became a best-seller across much of the world. Rover Group by this time, was under the ownership of BMW and not wanting the MG to compete with its Z sports cars, the MGF never made it to the USA.

In 2012, the MG3 was released with the slogan “Fun is Back” and it has been MG’s strong seller in the UK. It was available with a wide array of customizations. It was designed in the very factory at Longbridge where the iconic supermini cars of Mini are produced for almost 50 years. And in 2015, MG made it’s shot with its first ever SUV, the MG GS.
With the commencement of the new century, MG merged with Rover to for them MG Rover Group. Based on Rover’s saloons and hatchbacks, the new company quickly launched the MG ZR, ZS, ZT and ZT-T. The MGF too was revised and resurrected as the MG TF. 2003 saw the launch of the MG XPower SV. With its aggressive styling, carbon fibre body and Mustang-source 4.6 litre V8, the SV was impossible to ignore. Less than 100 SVs were completed before MG Rover’s collapse in 2005. Only three SV-S were believed to have been made. When the group collapsed, it was thought that it was the end of MG, but one thing we all know now is that the company is resilient as can be. So Nanjing Automotive Corporation (NAC) bought the production rights of the MG TF, MG ZR and MG ZT, and production of MG began in China. After the change in ownership, the first car was released in 2010. It was the MG6 in 2 versions, the GT (fastback) and Magnette (saloon). I was designed and engineered in the UK and released in China.

Owner’s Review I own a vehicle fleet service with customers in the tourism and hospitality industry. The Skoda Rapid has a premium feel which makes it a suitable addition to my fleet. Besides, foreigners usually prefer premium brand over others. The Skoda Rapid aces in every front-styling, interiors, performance and handling. I am extremely satisfied with the looks of the car. It’s a beauty and that is evident by its premium look. The interiors of the car are excellent and the best you can find among any other brand in the market. It’s a perfect mix of sporty and classy. The handling power and performance of the Rapid is great. I’ve driven other sedans too, but none of them compare to the quality Skoda delivers. The sturdy and smooth quality sets the Rapid apart from its counterparts. Moreover, I found it a real value for money car. As with the after sales service, I feel that Skoda’s post sales services are quite good. Skoda makes sure that they deliver the services they are known for and respond well to the customer’s queries and wishes. I am pleased with Skoda!

SUVs are popular in Nepal for a couple of reasons. The primary reason, and we’re not going to soften the blow here, it is a status symbol. For many people who own proper SUVs it’s not because of its utilitarian purposes or what’s under its hood, it is purely because of what owning a premium SUV signifies. You can’t use an SUV to get to and from office on a daily basis and expect the biweekly trips to Nagarkot justify its value. The other reason is that they fulfill two purposes; they can conquer terrains hatchback drivers wouldn’t imagine embarking on and they’re ideal for transporting large families. For people looking for capabilities of the latter description, and reluctant to use their family sedan like a clown car, the options are slim and narrow. If you fall in this category, then let us introduce you to the Kia Grand Carnival. People movers, or minivans, aren’t the most popular of choices for the general public but for those who seek the utilitarian purposes of these massive vehicles this might tickle your fancy. Kia gave us the opportunity to take the Grand Carnival out on drive, so we packed our picnic tables and took it out for a test drive.
EXTERIOR
Kia’s massive behemoth of a machine is a handsome thing. The Grand Carnival isn’t flashy at all and Kia is quiet content with making it as good looking as possible without going overboard. And the results are seriously good. Just because it is a people mover does not mean it has to look boring, which it doesn’t. Kia’s people are quick to point out that this is designed to be as close to a “normal” car as possible. And under the direction of the former Audi design guru Peter Schreyer, they’ve done a splendid job. The tiger nose grille sets the pace for entire design. Day time running lights are integrated into the swept back LED positioning headlights which are browed with bonnet creases that run up to the A-pillars. Elegant side molding accentuates the sporty lines of the Grand Carnival to maintain a dynamic profile view.
KIA’S MASSIVE BEHEMOTH OF A MACHINE IS A HANDSOME THING.

The shoulder line continues onto the rear of the large yet sleek body of the Grand Carnival and stops at the wraparound hexagonal tail lamps with integrated indicators. A chrome slim chrome strip and the kia badge garnish the simplistic rear.
INTERIOR AND FEATURES
It is a beige and black combination in the cabin which is capable of seating a staggering 11 people. If you want, you can take your family and your in-laws on a road trip without any hitch. They can all pile in to the massive cabin through the automatic sliding doors that open smoothly at a push of a button. The standup second row folds in vertically so that passengers can easily access the third row. The Grand Carnival is a people mover and it ensures that the people are comfortable throughout the duration of the journey. Seat layout is two individual seats in front; three in the centre row; two reasonable units in the back. The centre row has its two outer pews slightly wider than the centre seat. The centre seat backrest can be folded down to form a table, or can be removed altogether to give stretch out elbow room. The third row folds into the floor to create an enormous flat luggage space that still seats five. The three spoke steering wheels have a plethora of controls that gives telephone controls, cruise control access. The gear shift knob for the automatic transmission hints at its inspiration from the aviation world. The instrument console has a MIDI display flanked by large analog dials of the speedo and tachometer. There are plenty of creature

comforts in this high-tech minivan, such as keyless entry, dual full auto air conditioning, audio remote control, Radio, CD, MP3 Player and a 4.2” LCD display. There is Bluetooth connectivity and AUX and USB as well.
PERFORMANCE AND HANDLING
The Grand Carnival isn’t exclusively a commuter vehicle, and you won’t use it as one. You’ll take your family away from the bustle of the city and explore what the nation has in store for you and enjoy every moment of it. To ensure that the Grand Carnival is capable of doing that it is fitted with a 2.2 diesel automatic. This delivers a max power of 193ps@3800 rpm. It chugs a lot of fuel but it is smooth and made light work of inclinations we pointed it towards. The six-speed auto rarely finds itself caught off guard and is quick to respond by shifting down a gear when it is. The steering is light and accurate, but the big body leans once you speed up. It’s a heavy car and feels it. Because it has a soft suspension it dips and
58

squats over speed bumps when fully loaded. Around town the Carnival is large and might be difficult to manage for novice drivers. The difficulties are compensated for with large exterior mirrors and a reversing camera. And the impressively tight turning circle helps with parking and U-turns. The Carnival also features Hillstart assist control, electronic stability control, and front and rear parking sensors to make life easier.
VERDICT
For anyone who loves to travel to far away destinations with their friends and families, this is a great option to consider. The Grand Carnival is made for the travelers. Nevertheless it does not mean that it is a boring vehicle. It is decked out with all the creature comforts and the style quotient is not compromised. It has a steep asking price but compared to competition it is justifiable. As an added bonus you’ll be a popular during the next wedding season. Now if that doesn’t buy you in, we don’t know what will. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Through the years, over 11 decades, Royal Enfield has been riding on its retro-cool image to find its place in the hearts of many motorcyclists in Nepal. The iconic rumble, which mortified some of the less enthusiastic segment, became the sought after noise you wanted emanating from your motorcycle engine. Its image was overshadowed by one of its models and the brand became synonymous with the Bullet name. Royal Enfield, however, does not cater to the average motorcycle rider. It is unapologetically uninterested in the commuter market segment and RE’s buyers are people who don’t care for things like mileage. It became a signature of the outliers, the passionate ones who ride for leisure and passion. What goes without saying though, is the fact that Royal Enfield had stuck to what it was good at, which was manufacturing motorcycles that harked back to the retro styling of the yesteryears. And it worked splendidly; apart from the aesthetic appeal RE owners travelled on their machines. The Thunderbird took it a step further, establishing itself as a kilometer muncher. The Continental GT set itself on the tracks of the café racers. Royal Enfields became a popular choice for those who reveled in the thrills of chasing the horizon. Although it was more comfortable on the tarmac, it didn’t fear tackling roads less travelled. But their lineup of motorcycles didn’t particularly cater to the ones who refused to stop when the tarmac did, until they came out with the Himalayan, their first adventure motorcycle. With the Himalayan, Royal Enfield will be getting the attention of newer markets; markets that include people who crave to quench their wanderlust but cannot afford the technically superior adventure bikes that are made for the job. Well, that is what they claim and we put it to the test.

THE HIMALAYAN PROMISES THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS, HIGHWAY CRUISING CAPABILITIES AND THE PROWESS TO TACKLE OFF ROAD TERRAIN.
STYLING
The Royal Enfield Himalayan has broken away from its comfort zone in the retro-cool aesthetics. And it looks like they’ve looked to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max for inspiration. The raw minimalistic approach helps to portray the Himalayan’s no nonsense attitude by finding a balance between decked out adventure motorcycles and bare essential dual sports. Function outweighs modern styling but it works well. The saddle is low and its stance suggests its readiness to tackle the dirt. A large tank with a supporting frame, simple round headlight, tall windscreen and beak reflect its adventure motorcycling pedigree. There aren’t many plastic fairings and the Himalayan bares its heart to the world. It runs on grippy dual purpose tyres, 21-inch up front and 17-inch in the rear. A simple exhaust fits in well with the rest of the design. The instrument console has analog dials for the fuel gauge, RPM meter and the same type displays the speed. There is also a digital gear indicator, two tripmeters, average speed display, side-stand indicator, clock, temperature gauge and a compass. The LED tail light sits under a large metal grab rail that also doubles up as a mount for a tail bag. The Himalayan does well to give you
62
AUTOLIFE NOVEMBER 2016
space to clip on fuel and water jerry cans, or even extra front-mounted panniers, all of which enhance its touring bike appeal.
Performance and Handling
We had a lot of expectations from the Himalayan, and they did their part to rile us up with their promotions. The Himalayan promises the best of both worlds, highway cruising capabilities and the prowess to tackle off road terrain. That sets the bar high, but it was purpose built for exactly that. The Himalayan has an all-new, air-cooled, carbureted 410cc singlecylinder UCE engine, an all-new frame, and shares no parts with Royal Enfields that have come before it. It produces a claimed 24.5 hp at 6,500 rpm and 32 Nm. of peak torque at 4,500 rpm. Power is sent through a five-speed transmission. What this translates to is a smooth running engine that delivers linear power through the rev ranges. This made highway cruising a walk in the park. The Himalayan is no doubt one of the best handling Royal Enfields, but it might not provide any surge of adrenaline resorting instead to a steady trickle of excitement after every rev. There is a calm subtlety facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
with an underlying prowess that presents itself only when you really need it and open up the throttle lavishly. It is a heavy machine but most of that weight is carried low in the frame, so maneuverability is nimble. Because it has a short saddle height it is easily accessible to the average Nepalese population. It has a relaxed seating position with your hands at a neutral level. The footpegs are only slightly rearset which allows you to grip the frame when you are seated. We wouldn’t say it’s timid, but it is definitely reserved for the majority of the time. It does cheer up when you release it onto broken roads. The 41mm front forks (offering 200mm travel) up front in conjunction with the monoshock make for a plush ride; and the motorcycle is built to handle anything that comes its way. Once you come across significant offroad patches and where you want to be is standing up on the peg.
Verdict
Swinging a foot over a mighty motorized beast and heading out on a borderless wanderlust across countries and varying roads is the dream, but it isn’t achievable for many. Adventure bikes have exemplified this dream and we can’t even count the how many times we’ve thought about dropping it all and setting out into the world on an adventure motorcycle that we can’t afford. The Royal Enfield Himalayan is the answer to the unattainable and complex adventure motorcycles. It is the only purpose built adventure motorcycle that is available in the market and it ticks the boxes in many aspects. It isn’t afraid to conquer terrains that you wouldn’t attempt on a simple commuter. It isn’t overly aggressive and in the words of Siddhartha Lal, MD and CEO of Royal Enfield it is “purposeful, but not extreme”. But it is a workhorse. It has a whopping 10,000km oil change interval and can be fixed and maintained in the most remote areas or if you have a adequate mechanical knowledge. For the ones who are looking to hit the horizon on two wheels without emptying their bank accounts, it doesn’t get much better than this.
THE ROYAL ENFIELD HIMALAYAN IS THE ANSWER TO THE UNATTAINABLE AND COMPLEX ADVENTURE MOTORCYCLES.

I used to drive a hatchback but I felt like it was time for a change. Since Fiat is a renowned company, I thought it would be a good choice while making a transition from a hatchback to a crossover. In fact, I have been very happy about my purchase. Visually, the front and side profile provide a rugged and sporty essence to the Avventura. The overall exterior adds a good adventurous touch to the whole appearance. Just like the well-designed exteriors, the interiors are equally comfortable and adequate. The car is quite spacious and provides an ample shoulder and legroom.

The Avventura provides a supple ride and handling quality. The car is quite powerful too and has a ground clearance making it really suitable for our bumpy roads. Even on uneasy roads, the Avventura fares surprisingly well. The after sales service provided by Fiat is quite satisfactory. I believe that the company really works hard to satisfy its customers. I believe that the Avventura is a good value for money proposition. In fact, I have recommended the Avventura to a many of my friends.

The holidays are the perfect time to satiate your wanderlust, not only is the weather splendid but that is also probably the only time you get off of work. While half of the country flocked towards Mustang we headed towards Belbari Morang. It might not be the most popular destination but we were heading over to surprise a friend’s fiancÊ on her birthday by paying her a visit, so we were pretty amped. To be honest, we just needed a reason to get out of the city, and we were happy to take this Karan Joharesque opportunity. To embark on this romantic journey of one and sidekick tag along for two we decided on taking our own rides, the trusty Honda Unicorn

The historic fort is famous for the battle between the then Gorkha army and the British troops headed by Captain Kinloch. Long story short, the Gorkha army pounded on the British Indian troops who fled leaving a large amount of weapons and ammunitions behind, which were seized by the Gorkha army. The Gorkhas had used unconventional badassery like unleashing hornets and using nettles, among a variety of other strategies, to defeat the British soldiers. Considering the epic

battle this fort witnessed, it is a shame that such an important historical monument is so poorly maintained. Darkness had fallen by the time we reached Koshi barrage and that meant we had to travel in the dark till we reached our destination, which was easier said than done. It was difficult to traverse the dark roads of terai and the onslaught of bugs didn’t help either. Ultimately, we reached our destination and the two lovebirds shared their dreamy reunion; and while they caught up on the happenings during their time apart the two of us who didn’t have any distractions around, gorged ourselves on the pork, rice and local tongba that the

They were kind enough to offer us shelter which we graciously accepted. The following day we rode to Bhedetar, a beautifully scenic location that is well known for its dynamic weather changes. One moment we were drinking beer under the sun and before we knew it we had to pull on our jackets and slurp on some warm thukpa. Turns out their pork thukpa was a delicacy so the sudden change in climate was a win for us. We’re always eager to experience local delicacies and the thukpa was a winner, but we suggest you skip their “Special Dhankuta” biscuits.

We stuffed our faces with as much of the good stuff as we could once we reached Bagarkot, which is apparently the Mecca of Dharan’s pork sekuwas. It was a great way to end our short trip because we left for home early next morning. On the way back we ate some amazing pedas in Saptari. “Having spent more than 100 years in a variety of international markets, it gives us utmost confidence to step up our game in the Nepalese market”

AUTOLIFE NOVEMBER 2016 73
HOW ARE YOU PROMOTING YOUR PRODUCT AND CREATING BRAND AWARENESS IN THE NEPALESE MARKET? For over a century, Veedol oil has been one of the leading players in the global lubricant industry since 1928.Veedol was the engine oil for the World’s first mass car produced car, the model T-Ford. It was also the chosen lubricant for the first airship to fly around the world, the Graf Zeppelin whose journey began from Germany. Veedol was also the chosen lubricant for the first non-stop flight across the Pacific Ocean from Japan to USA, in a 1931 Bellanca J-300 plane aptly named ‘Miss Veedol’. It will be our endeavor to present to Nepal’s discerning customers a fine blend of rich heritage coupled with best of products from our international stable of products which are formulated using modern technology. We are committed to providing best of products and services to bring out the best of modern automobiles and Veedol will contribute in a big way for elevating driving experience for vehicle owners. We are privileged to have most respected and fastest growing Vishal group as our partner for doing this job together. We will be rolling out effective and aggressive ATL communications and BTL activities to increase our brand awareness amongst the consumers/mechanics/trade etc. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE DEMAND FACTORS FOR THE LUBRICANTS MARKET IN NEPAL? As per our understanding, the lubricant industry in Nepal is estimated to be 15000 MT. It is one of the very few growing markets with a projected healthy growth in the coming years. This is largely because of the huge demand for automobiles. The motorcycle market is also growing and is a very good business potential for Veedol 4T oils. In India, Veedol is very strong in 4T segment and is a preferred supplier of Genuine Oils to Hero (HMCL), Honda (HIS), Yamaha etc. The construction equipment market is also growing fast and Veedol will look to capitalize on this
74
AUTOLIFE NOVEMBER 2016
opportunity through special and specific products developed for this segment. The lubricant market in Nepal has significant scope to improve on performance levels of lubricants in use. It is well known fact that the quality of lubricants in Nepal has not kept pace with hardware improvement. This is costing Nepal a lot in maintenance costs, early loss of fuel efficiency and durability of equipments. We are looking at this opportunity by offering cutting edge high performance products coupled with unmatched service levels. We are confident of achieving significant brand equity for Veedol products in Nepal within short time. HOW ARE YOU EXPANDING YOUR PRODUCTS HERE? We are focusing on establishing a strong Veedol Distributor network across Nepal which will be highly service oriented and will have pan Nepal coverage. We are quite aware that the gruesome road infrastructure, coupled with lack of complete knowledge on maintenance need of vehicle makes it tougher for presently available lubricants to deliver optimum performance. When you negotiate steep climbs, the engine oil has to deal with much higher temperatures, pressures and thermal stresses. We plan to introduce products which are technically robust. Not only will they provide effective lubrication but also contribute for higher fuel efficiency, durability of the engine and dependability. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES AND CHALLENGES OF DOING BUSINESS IN NEPAL FROM AN INTERNATIONAL COMPANY’S PERSPECTIVE? Nepal is a ver y impor tant market for us. We are thrilled to have Vishal Group as our par tner in the Veedol business. With our synergies, methods of working and understanding, we are going to bring in major shift with a ver y power ful team to make Veedol a success in Nepal.
Ofcourse we need to compete with well-established MNCs in Nepal and host of local players operating with primitive/outdated technologies. Having spent more than 100 years in a variety of international markets, it gives us utmost confidence to step up our game in the Nepalese market. DUE TO VARYING TEMPERATURES AT DIFFERENT PLACES, NEPAL OFFERS A VERY TOUGH TERRAIN. SO DOES THAT MEAN THE OIL FOR NEPAL IS DIFFERENT? Veedol has a wide range of portfolio to suit any application (terrain, climatic conditions, severe loading etc.). This will help us to offer the only the best suited products to the customers as per their specific requirement. Our products offer very high oxidation stability. A perfect blend of high quality base oils and modern additive system comprising of anti-wear, anti-oxidant, rust & corrosion inhibitors, detergent/ dispersant additives takes care of contamination, oxidation, sludge formation during combustion. Veedol advanced formulations not only increases engine life but also reduces engine wear and tear. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SAY REGARDING YOUR MARKET STRATEGY IN NEPAL? Our Marketing strategy rests on following pillars: - Trust: Build trust in Veedol through quality products and service assurance. - Focus on: “Empower the influencers” with education and training, which are the workshops/ lube change outlets and the retail channels. - Education: Keep the consumer informed and updated on Veedol’s product range which is available for every application, excellent quality of our product and the performance benefits they can derive by using Veedol. Educate customers on why they should be buying /using good quality lubricant rather than cheaper low quality lubricant. - Products: Offer best products to the market in each segment. We intend to implement these metrics via various customized communication plans.

THE BEST OF INTERMOT 2016 The biennial INTERMOT show is one of the most important international forums for motorised two-wheelers. With a record attendance of 220,000 visitors, the German show this year provided 1,133 companies from 40 countries displaying their products across Intermot’s six enormous halls, and attracting visitors from 95 countries – the record attendance bettering the previous event by 17 percent. This year presented a firework of innovations with around 40 premieres of the vehicle manufacturers. Check out our best picks from this year’s show
HONDA CB1100 EX AND CB1100 RS:
Unveiled at Intermot were the upgraded CB1100 EX and new CB1100 RS, two examples of the retro-styled beautifully crafted CB1100 that’s been around since 2013. The story of the CB1100 RS starts almost 70 years ago, when the twin-cylinder CB92 Benly was introduced in 1959. The CB series was born and has maintained a place in Honda’s line-up, and the hearts of Honda fans, ever since. The CB1100 draws its inspiration from the fabled CB750 of the 1960s and 70s. That lived on in various guises until 2003, and almost as soon as it was gone it seems Honda was pining for the bike’s heyday. The CB1100 floated around as a concept for a number of years before finally going into production in Japan in 2010, where it was a hit Whereas the CB1100 EX has even more classic appeal from its 40-spoke 18” zinc-coated stainless steel wheels, the new CB1100 RS has a more sporty, café racer style, with new cast 17” aluminium wheels fitted with wide, sporty tyres and a more upright caster angle and lower handlebars.

BMW R NINE T RACER:
For many motorcycle fans, less is more – which is why they opt for “pure motorcycling” and the kind of motorbike that authentically embodies this approach. BMW Motorrad responded with the R nineT in 2013 – a model that has enjoyed ongoing success ever since. Motivated by this positive response, BMW Motorrad now presents the R nine T Racer along with the R nice T Pure– two motorcycles that add two exciting new facets to the BMW Motorrad Heritage world of experience. The R nineT Racer deliberately arouses memories of the sports motorcycles popular in the early 1970s. Crouched, compact and elongated, it conveys a sense of old-school sporty aspiration with its strikingly short half-fairing, hump seat, stub handlebars and set-back footrests, combining this overall impression
with modern technology. Both the new BMW Heritage models feature the potent, air/oil-cooled boxer engine with a capacity of 1 170 cc and an output of 81 kW (110 hp) combined with a 6-speed transmission. On the suspension side, the R nineT Racer and R nineT Pure make use of the modular steel tubular space frame familiar from the R nineT Scrambler consisting of the three components front main frame, rear main frame and removable passenger frame. Front wheel control is taken care of by a conventional telescopic fork while at the rear the BMW Paralever comes into use in conjunction with a central spring strut. The five-spoke light alloy cast wheels in the sizes 3.5 x 17” at the front and 5.5 x 17” at the rear have tyres in the dimensions 120/70 ZR 17 and 180/55 ZR 17 respectively.
2017 DUCATI SUPERSPORT AND SUPERSPORT S:
Ducati’s two new SuperSport models made their entry at INTERMOT 2016. These new bikes, according to the factory, “blend Ducati’s sporting side with road focused performance and accessibility.” What this means in practice is the Ducati SuperSport is designed for those who want a sport-inspired bike that still provides comfort and easy handling on everyday roads. A fun bike that’s versatile and accessible, with the style and soul of a real Ducati thoroughbred. Powering the SuperSport is a twin-cylinder 937 cc Testastretta 11° engine, delivering 113 hp and a full yet linear torque curve. Thanks to the three Riding Modes (Sport, Touring, and Urban), the SuperSport’s temperament can be adapted to maximize enjoyment whatever the riding conditions. Agile on city streets, comfortable on the motorway and superlative on twisting country roads, the SuperSport is super-versatile. Relaxed rider and passenger positions, good airflow deflection from the height-adjustable screen and the mileage provided by the 16-litre fuel tank also make the new Ducati SuperSport a cool companion on medium-distance rides. The SuperSport range includes a SuperSport S version featuring fully adjustable Öhlins suspension, the Ducati Quick Shift up/down system and a rear seat cover: the latter are also available as accessories for the SuperSport.

TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE T100 AND STREET CUP:
The British brand continues to build on the success of its retro range, with the latest in the Bonneville line-up. The iconic British motorcycle manufacturer took the wraps off the Bonneville T100 and the Street Cup. The T100 essentially makes use of the ‘high torque’ 900cc, liquid-cooled, parallel-twin engine which presently powers the Street Twin as well. It churns out 54bhp and 80Nm and is mated to a 5-speed transmission. Triumph says that the Bonneville T100 takes its inspiration from the Bonneville of the 50s and the 60s and it is visually similar to the Bonneville T120. The Street Cup, on the other hand, is essentially a street twin but with a handful of mods to transform it from modern classic roadster, to cheeky café racer. The most distinctive new elements are the bullet seat and removable seat cowl, fly screen, drop bars and bar end mirrors, while the two-tone paint options also hark back to the golden era of café racers – especially in black and silver. Power comes from the same 900cc High Torque Bonneville engine found throughout the range, but the Cup gets its own shorter and lighter twin satin black and stainless steel upswept silencers, and the same ride-by-wire, switchable traction control, ABS and a torque assist clutch as its siblings.
SUZUKI GSX-R 125:
The GSX-R 125 is the smallest model in the Suzuki GSX-R series. The sporty new model inherits the GSX-R family with its aggressive and sharp design, best power to weight ratio, torque to weight ratio and acceleration, plus nimble handling and great fuel economy. The power plant for the new GSX-R125 is a single cylinder, liquid cooled, DOHC with 125cc. It powers the GSX-R to great performance on the track and on the street and a lot more besides. It’s versatile too, designed to handle city traffic jams while commuting to school or work during the week. And as an exciting sportsbike, the combination of lightweight chassis and smooth power delivery mean this GSX-R is read for the racetrack as well. It has ABS as standard equipment, and adopted a keyless ignition system and the Suzuki Easy Start System.
