I used to have Hyundai i10 before I purchased Hyundai i20 Active. I was searching for a crossover which could meet my requirements such as ride dynamics, luggage space and attractive exteriors. I decided to do a little research about the Hyundai Active i20 on my own as it seemed to meet my requirements. While doing so I found that the services promised matched my necessities exactly and I decided to purchase it. I must say the car has lived up to my expectations. Regarding the exteriors, I think overall look of the car is just fabulous. Design wise it is very attractive; it has mature ride and handling capability and confidence inspiring brakes. Onto the vehicle’s handling, power and performance on our roads, I find the suspension quite reasonable at low speeds as well and it manages to tackle potholes with smooth ease. I can definitely say this car lives up to its reputation of being the best in its segment. And one of the best feature it has is high ground clearance which is an asset while riding in the roads of Kathmandu and also I am planning on going to Pokhara soon in this vehicle. All in all, I find this vehicle to be an excellent choice for our roads.

Roshan Paudel

Managing Director Radiolink Advertising Pvt. Ltd.

In addition to the car’s design and performance, the customer service provided by Hyundai is equally promising. Till now I love this car and I’m glad that I purchased it.

EDITORIAL Hello again, In the last issue, we talked about the good things that came out of the 2017 NADA. And here we are again talking about it. We’ll probably never stop talking about it because there’s so much to talk about. For instance, the 400NK from CF Moto that graces our cover. A beast of a bike. The highlight of this month for us was catching up with Sulav Budhathoki and envying his collection. Any guy would love to have what he has in his garage. Then there’s the admirable facelift the Hyundai Xcent got. We love the look of it. And we had the chance to spin the the all-new upgraded Suzuki Dzire which took a front seat at the 2017 NADA. Another product which got us going was the NIU N1S, the latest entrant in the EV scenario of Nepal. The N1S is probably the most SMARTest scoot in town. We also caught wind that Moto Guzzi is coming to Nepal. Now, this name is not that loud but it has been a cornerstone for motorbikes. We know our readers want to learn more about this Italian brand, so we got a little something about it, along with a list of their bikes we’d love to see. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. See you in the next one! .

NEW SKODA KAROQ UNVEILED; INDIA LAUNCH NEXT YEAR Skoda has pulled the wraps off the new Skoda Karoq SUV at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2017. Skoda is looking to boost its SUV range with the introduction of the compact Karoq, which replaces the Yeti in the automaker’s line-up. Karoq echoes the popular Kodiaq in terms of style and design, albeit with reduced proportions. Apart from the overall size, you’ll be hard pushed to find any significant differences between the look of the two vehicles. The Karoq will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s flexible MQB platform that forms the basis for the Karoq’s larger sibling as well as the Volkswagen Tiguan, New technology for the Karoq - a crucial element to be successful in the baby SUV space - includes for the first time a digital instrument display, mirroring similar tech seen first in its group partner, Audi. Besides its own infotainment system, Skoda will

also offer smartphone mirroring through both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Czech car maker will also offer a variety of diesel and petrol engines which will range from small 1.0-litre displacement units through 1.5-litre petrol variants - that will feature cylinder deactivation technology to increase efficiency - and on to the 140kW 2.0-litre turbo diesel unit seen throughout the Volkswagen Group’s models. Skoda has stated that it will offer either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission on most models, there will also be both front- and all-wheel drive options within the range.

Petroleum has a wicked leash on the whole world. It can make the fortunate rich, and start wars among the unfortunate. It can either make or break an economy. More so, the price of everything is dependent on this fossil fuel. As bad as it is, it has got us a long way. There’s almost nothing we can’t do without petroleum. Now, we said “almost”, and by definition, it is not the ultimate, there is some wriggle room there, and coming to today’s day and age, it is comforting to see that it’s being occupied by alternate power; like electricity. As of recent, electric vehicles have been in the buzz due to its minimal carbon foot print, and it’s all good news. The better news is that they have been trying to up their game by the day. One such name who has been striving for this is NIU. A recent introduction in the Nepalese auto market, they have been manufacturing electric scooters in China, and have just introduced the N1S. Here’s what we think about it

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2017 25

Design brings stories to life and the minimal aesthetics of the N1S surely grabs your attention. STYLING AND FEATURES Design brings stories to life and the minimal aesthetics of the N1S surely grabs your attention. The industrial design of the N1S clearly identifies with its aesthetics, ergonomics and functionality. When you begin to look closely at the N1S you can see a symmetry and a repetition of shape and form across a variety of elements in the scooter – from the saddle mounts, to the passenger foot rests, to the body panels, all work in unison with one another. Another iconic style quotient of the scooter is the unibody LED lamp which integrates a daytime running light and standard light in a unique 360 degree CCFL structure combined with LED ‘ bead’ lamps. The rear gets a TechnoLED lamp structure that integrates a rear light, turning indicators, brake light, and a plate lamp. Coming to the dashboard, the scooter gets a slab-type instrumentation panel which displays speed, remaining battery capacity, riding modes and real-time

26

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2017

amperage. An insane attention to detail is evident from the fact that the N1S patented body design employs over 200 sets of molds and two years of development. There’s also a NIU app which provides real-time visibility on the status of your N1S. It comes loaded with features like GPS, anti-theft, remote tracking, scooter diagnostics and help center.

POWER & PERFORMANCE At the core of the N1S sits the BOSCH developed 2400W* motor. Couple this with a 120NM of torque at disposal; the N1S can easily reach a top cruising speed of 45 kmph. Powering the motor is a 60V 29Ah Lithium ion battery pack. The 29Ah battery pack which comes with a 2 year guarantee is fully re-charged in six hours, providing an 80km range, or about three to four typical days of urban commuting. The battery pack is removable to reduce weight (by about 10 kg) and that you can charge it on or off the scooter.

Turn on the key and you get to choose between three riding modes; Mode 1: an energy saving mode to extend driving range, Mode 2: an optimized mode for speed and driving range and Mode 3: a mode for those who seek speed over range. Did it pull our combined weight of 152kgs? Did it climb the road to Bhaisepati town planning with that weight? Of course, Yes! The N1S surprisingly has decent performance for an electric vehicle. It provides plenty of pop and an equally smooth ride. Extending the ride and the performance is the NIU proprietary Field Oriented Control which delivers the ultimate riding experience. The FOC recognizes the conditions you’re riding under and instantly calls on the motor to perform as optimally as possible. The brakes on the N1S strictly provided a good bite. The Electronic Braking System (EBS) which consists of dual hydraulic disc brakes not only makes your ride safe but also recycles energy back into the system. As per NIU, on average the EBS is providing an additional 6% of battery power, or in www.autolife.com.np

other words about 4km of riding range. NIU claims a range of 80kms per charge. We rode it for about 25 kms juggling between the three modes and we managed to drain the battery power from 85% to just 69%.

ERGONOMICS: Just like a typical bicycle frame, the N1S maintains a triangle frame architecture to create three points of balance for an enhanced riding comfort. The lower seat height of 740 mm combines with relatively oversized 12-inch wheels to create a low centre of gravity. This eases in steering and driving in tight city streets. Similarly, the wheelbase of 1280mm creates a perfect balance between comfort and maneuverability for both a single and double rider experience. The scooter also gets underseat storage of 18.9 litres to stow your helmet, small bags, and basic items. Talking about the suspension setup, it comes with front and rear dual hydraulic shockabsorbers. Combine this with an Aluminum-Titanium swing arm, and you get a pleasant riding experience on our roads.

SPECIFICATIONS Max speed: 45 km/h Est. range (20km/h): 80 km Wheelbase: 1280mm Max Passenger Weight: 155 kg Max Starting Gradeability: 15 degrees Front/Rear Shock Absorber: Oil Damping Direct Acting Shock Absorber Front Braking Mode: 220 mm Dual-Piston Hydraulic Disk Brake Rear Braking Mode: 180 mm Dual-Piston Hydraulic Disk Brake Min. Ground Clearance: 145 mm Seating Height: 740 mm Battery Unit: Panasonic / NCR18650PF Standard Charging Current: 4A Electromotor: Tailored Motor by Bosch GmbH Rated Power: 1500 W Maximum Power: 2400 W PRICE: Rs 2,65,000 CONTACT: Trade Link International Maitighar, Kathmandu 9801230006 faceook.com/niunepal

VERDICT: The N1S is a lot of fun to ride. It delivers a set of well-thought out high-tech features not seen on conventional scooters. If distance rather than speed is your choice, the N1S is one of the best scooters out there for achieving it. It is a very practical and a worthy candidate if you wish it to use for limited range commutes. Buying an e-scooter is a serious commitment, but with the introduction of a worldclass brand like NIU, hopefully it will be easier to skim down your choices. Although the pricing falls on the heavier side of the spectrum, theN1S just seals the deal with its overall geometry.

SUZUKI DZIRE

A WHOLE NEW WORLD OF DZIRE

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2017

www.autolife.com.np

The old Swift Dzire took the compact sedan segment by storm because it brought back life to the segment that was slowly dying due to the birth of premium hatchbacks and compact crossovers. The Swift Dzire surely did wonders in the compact sedan segment and proved a point that compact sedans are here to stay. Although it took Suzuki quite a time to upgrade their best-selling compact sedan, the arrival of the new Dzire couldn’t have come at a much better period. One of the biggest iterations in the new Dzire is the removal of the ‘Swift’ prefix from the model name. The new Dzire is still based on the Swift’s platform though. CG | MOTOCORP, the authorized distributors of Suzuki cars in Nepal, got such an overwhelming response for the Dzire that they were short on cars and couldn’t allocate the top variant for our review. Nevertheless, we got our hands on the ZXI version for a spin around the capital. So, will the newly launched Dzire follow its predecessor’s footsteps and create another wave in the segment? Well, we find out… facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2017 33

EXTERIOR:

Suzuki has provided the Dzire a whole new identity. The immaculate sedan proportions are well complemented by the beautiful chrome highlights and a new grill. The new Dzire looks really good with the new LED DRLs (Day time Running Lamps) and projector headlamps (ZXI Optional only). Below the headlamps sit fog lamps with chrome fins. The chrome around the whole grill lends a very upmarket look. The silhouette has also been stretched in all directions to carve out a larger interior space. The ZXI gets alloy wheels while the ZXI Optional gets precision- cut two-tone alloy wheels. The rear gets LED combination lamps. Overall, the new Dzire looks bold and classy with its well-balanced proportions and streamlined design. The new upgrades have provided a proper justice to the nametag name and have surely made it more “Dzireable.

INTERIOR:

The interior has been drastically changed than before and it feels a lot more upmarket that before. The new Dzire comes with more space, comfortable seats and plush interiors. The highlights of the roomy cabin include the burl wood ornamentation with satin chrome accents, flat-bottom leather-wrapped steering wheel, refined speedometer with satin chrome meter rings and rear ac vents. A 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system sits in the middle (ZXI option only). The 7 inch infotainment system is paired with a reversing camera to

make parking easier, both the ZXI and the ZXI optional are equipped with parking sensors. The ZXI gets a normal music system with Bluetooth connectivity. The ORVM is electronically foldable so a press of a button will fold/unfold the ORVMs. The ZXI gets keyless entry and push start button. The new Dzire is more spacious than before and it comes with a bigger boot too (378 litres). There is ample legroom for front and rear seats for everyone.

PERFORMANCE:

The Suzuki Dzire’s engine is based on the same 1.2 litre petrol engine but has been tweaked a little. The 1197cc engine produces the same 82Bhp of power @6000 RPM and 113Nm of torque @4200 RPM like its predecessor so, there isn’t much change in terms of performance. The K12 engine facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

is a little rough and you can feel slight vibrations inside the cabin. The engine is very torque with good power delivery. Push it above 6000 RPM and the real power comes in play. The K12 engine like most of the Suzuki engines is a rev-friendly engine and won’t show any signs of stress. The steering wheel has a really good feel to it although it feels light at times. However, it does provide a decent feedback. The car performs well in the corners and it is really firm. All variants of Dzire come equipped with dual Airbags, ABS (Antilock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution.) and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

VERDICT:

The Dzire looks set to create another wave with the recent upgrade. The new updates make it even more attractive than before. The Dzire looks set to uphold its legacy as the King of the Compact sedans. The Dzire will be a very good choice for people looking for a family car that is spacious and won’t break the bank. The pricing of the Dzire starts from NPR. 30, 89,000/- for the VXI variant and NPR. 34, 39,000 for the ZXI variant and NPR. 37,39,000/- for the ZXI Optional variant.

MY AUTOLIFE WITH SULAV BUDHATHOKI,

GROUP CHAIRMAN, INNOVATE NEPAL GROUP

E

Every once in a while we come across individuals with whom we share a deep passion for automobiles. For petrolheads like us, cars are so much more than just a simple ‘interest’. From bucket seat thrills to the mixture of freedom they bring, automobiles are one of the highlights of our lives. We recently had the privilege to interview a true hardcore automobile enthusiast, Sulav Budhathoki. He owns a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, a fully-decked up Ford Ranger, a Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin and a Honda CBR650F to name a few. What’s really great about his story though, is that

he started out young in a Kawasaki Bajaj 4S Champion which he still has. As the Group Chairman of Innovate Nepal Group, an investment holding company that focuses on innovating higher education in Nepal by blending international qualifications with local contexts, it’s not often that easy for Sulav to continue his passion amidst his hectic work life. But he has led a very interesting work life –he makes sure his vehicles are not just confined inside his garage. We were honored that he took out time for us, and he was delighted to share his enthusiasm with us.

WORDS AND PHOTOS : AL TEAM

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Tell us what’s parked in your garage at the moment? Which do you drive the most? Primarily, I ride a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, a Mitsubishi Outlander, and a Ford Ranger. I have other cars in my garage but these three are my main wheels. The Ranger I have is a 2000 model 2.5l, and oh my god, the torque and pick up in it is really something. My friend Vivek from Yeti Travels has sworn to break the friendship between us if I were to sell this car away. It’s way better than the current models. How did you first learn to ride/drive and which is the first car/bike you had a go on? 30 years ago or so when I was in the 5th grade, my dad had a Rajdoot bike. He let me park it and bring it out for him so in the process, I just learned how to ride it. Eventually, when I was old enough, I rode it around. Dad also had a Honda 185 XL which too I learned to ride some how. Both of these were heavy bikes, and after being able to ride them, I got my first personal ride after passing my SLC, which was a Kawasaki Bajaj 4S

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2017 45

Champion, and I am proud to say that I still own it and can start it up with just one kick. Coming to 4 wheels, I learned to drive from my friends and the first car was a Toyota Corolla GL, of which my friends still tell me that if there’s a space to just about fit in a car, I can fit in comfortably without a care for anyone. I had installed low profile tyres on it and dropped the clarence. This one time, a friend of mine suggested that we should go to the outskirts to which I agreed for I thought it’d be fun. So with that low riding Corolla, it took us 9 hours to go to Palpa on a 13km stretch of horrifying unpaved road. When we did finally reach our destination, an auto mechanic cursed us so crudely that when we got back, I disowned that car right away. This car is still in operation, and whenever I see it cruising down the street, I get a kick of nostalgia. Is there a driver behind the wheels of your car or is it you who takes charge? No, I drive myself. Till date, on which car you have had the best ever riding/driving experience? In Nepal, I had a great time driving the Volkswagen Passat CC. It’s so stable that I was driving at 190 kmph while still being able to hold a conversation comfortably with 2 guests at the back.

46

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2017

One of them later complained that they were feeling nauseous and was possibly losing blood pressure, but when they looked at the speed-o-meter, their doubt was cleared and the speed was to blame. I can’t complain about it because I did not notice any choking or anything like that. Outside from here, I really loved the Volvo XC 90. It’s an SUV, but due to its compact size, it’s a real joy driving it. Everything has been built with safety in mind and I can’t think of any other that’d come near it. I just hope they bring Volvo in Nepal soon enough. For two wheels, without a doubt, I’ll have to say the Honda Africa Twin. Amazing bike! I haven’t taken it on a long ride yet, but I really can’t wait to. Personally, what have been the pros and cons of owning an exotic set of wheels in Nepal? Not just here, but everywhere else as well, the car you drive speaks a lot about how you live. It shows how well you are doing. And just by having a passionate interest for automobiles whilst maintaining a successful business, it gives radiates an aura of interest. Also, it creates a connection with people who have the same passion. I’d say these are the pros of it. About the cons, I would say it’s how people see us. A lot have that mentality

that says we don’t have a place to dump our money in, so we buy expensive cars. To that, I want to call it out for being nonsense. We just love cars and bikes. That’s it. Plain and simple. One wicked or crazy thing that you have done on wheels? There are quite a few of those moments. The one with the Corolla and Passat is there, besides that, I would often take the 4S Champion to the outskirts of the valley as well. And this one time, on my way to Lakhuri bhanjyang, I took a fall and totally wrecked the breaks and the clutch. Without caring any less for it, I it took it through to Panauti, came down to Banepa and back home without a break and clutch, and any scratches. I think I am probably the first Nepali to race in a Formula 1 track with a Formula 2 car at the famous Silverstone circuit, UK. I was competing with 10 experts and I stood 7th and the funny part is; I almost puked after completing the race. Also, while in England, me with a few of my colleagues, we rode 400 miles in one day. From Liverpool, we went to Manchester, finished a meeting and made it in time for our flight at 8pm. The roads there are exceptionally tiring, they’re mostly straight so it’s really taxing on your mental state. Is there an ultimate dream car that www.autolife.com.np

you’d like to have parked in your garage? Definitely a sports car. I have hopes for it because roads are being made better and I hope to be able to drive one by the time I’m 60. I would love to drive a Ford Mustang, perhaps a Porsche 911, I don’t think we’ll be able to get fuel for a Ferrari here but a guy can dream, right? If you could wish for one automobile marque to have a showroom here in Nepal, not yet present, which would it be? I’m desperately waiting for the BMW. Then there’s the Porsche. And since the roads are becoming better, I’d love to see Volvo. Where do you think is the best destination to drive in Nepal? Anywhere that’s offroad, unexplored to semi-unexplored. Mountainous places like Loman Than are great options. If you were given complete control of the country, what changes would you bring about in the automotive scene of Nepal? First and foremost, I would raise a hard hand on the dump cars. What I mean by dump cars are those low segment cars that have not passed the safety test. You don’t have to follow the media for long to know that we have plenty of cars in the guise of being low budget. They’re really not safe to drive. Secondly, our transport infrastructure needs an upgrade. Once you have great infrastructures like proper roads, a lot can be accomplished. And to maintain them, if there’s a need, I’m sure no one would mind an increase in the taxes for its fully justified. Then I would love to work on the Nepalese tradition of borrowing but not returning. We’re probably the highest tax payers when it comes to automobiles, from road taxes to fuel and all that. We pay a way higher price than what’s actual. And where does it go? The pockets of ministers? Probably. I would love to make sure that the good people get their return. Your message or word of advice to all the auto lovers and owners in the country. Just one thing: when you’re driving on the highway, drive to your own capacity, never go over it. If you think you can handle 80 kmph, do yourself a favor and notch down to 70. That way you’ll double your chances of getting to wherever you’re going by double. You’ll burn yourself out less quicker as well that way. Also, if you don’t have a bike that’s meant for racing, don’t try to be a speed demon on it. It may not stop where you need to and that’s how accidents happen. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Motorcyclists in Nepal, as a general trend, have been obsessed with either fully faired motorcycles, or naked sports, and sometimes dual sports. Naked sports however, have taken the podium when it comes to popularity mostly for two main reasons: the streetfighter inspired styling and the versatility to go places. And this fact alone appeals to those who want the best of both worlds. Long story short, when CFMOTO first made its appearance at the NADA Auto Show 2017, we were positively beaming with joy. With a presence in 72 countries and counting, CFMOTO’s range of motorcycles in Nepal includes the aggressively designed 650NK, 650NK TT, 400NK and the 150NK. After giving the 150NK a proper test in our last issue, we have now with us its elder sibling – the 400NK. The bike fuses the versatility of a street bike with the styling and aggression of its bigger brother - the 600NK. So, does the 400NK fit the description and criterion of a proper naked sport to rule the street and occasional highway runs? We find out

A head turner in every sense of the word, the 400NK is probably the most appealing bike in its segment. STYLING

The naked styling of the 400NK is aesthetically pleasing and exudes a sporty demeanour – obviously Kiska. A head turner in every sense of the word, the 400NK is probably the most appealing bike in its segment. CFMOTO’s attention to detail is evident from the precisely sculpted sharp design of the 400NK. The street-fighter inspired styling gets an angular headlamp upfront which is integrated well with the telescopic front fork. The 17l fuel tank is beautifully shaped with muscular cuts that help the 400NK look wild and aggressive. The handlebars have been set at the upright position that is sporty enough to get down on the tank for the speed run and high enough to enjoy cruising past traffic. On the console are arrays of information that establish the bike as one of the most loaded amongst the competition. The easy-to-read instrumentation panel houses a speedometer, tachometer, tripmeter, riding modes, gear position, clock and gauge functions. The 400NK sports two riding modes; Sports and Economic which you can change by pressing a red button on the left handlebar. At the rear, the 17-inch meaty high speed radial tire and the chiselled LED taillight section give a striking and unmistakable identity to the bike. The build quality is excellent with the use of high-quality components throughout.

ENGINE & PERFORMANCE At the heart of the 400NK is a 400.4cc, twin-cylinder, inline engine with 41 HP @ 9500 RPM and 35.4 NM @7650 RPM on offer. The motor perfectly expresses the aggressiveness of a street-fighter. A thrilling machine that provides the best of both worlds; the two map switch ‘Sports’ and ‘Economic’ can be a treat for any motorcycle enthusiast.

Twist the throttle and the engine fires up with a throaty acoustics from it four cavity muffler. The best thing about the 400NK is just so how easy it is to get on with. Although the bike comes with two map switch, the ‘Sports’ mode is where it shines. Hit the throttle, push the ‘Sports’ mode, and the bike propels forward with eagerness in no time. Zooming past open roads leaves a wide grin on your face. The engine opens up at the medium revs around 4500 RPM, revving sweetly through the six-speed gearbox towards a speed of

about 140 kmph. Push it even further and the power builds progressively all the way to the higher rev range. However, speaking of shifts, we had to contain ourselves with a notchy gearbox. A slick gearbox would not have disrupted the sporty riding experience. Riding at higher rev range delivers slight vibrations, but it’s a worthwhile compromise. Nevertheless, the 400NK is a thrilling machine that provides the best of both worlds.

RIDE AND HAndling

The 400NK is easy to manoeuvre in city traffic, thanks to the rider-friendly ergonomics and super responsive engine. Cornering on the 400NK was a joy, though the slightly larger turning radius made it slightly heavy and strenuous. Although the dry weight stands at 193kg, the bike is still very manageable. Combined with the rider friendly low seat height of 795mm, the result is an exceptionally agile machine, comfortable enough for fairly long trips, and manoeuvrable around city traffic. Although the seat comfort is adequate enough, the pillion space is tight. The cantilever monoshock with adjustable rebound at the rear is decent enough, though slightly heavy on bumps. The high tensile diamond steel frame is a fine handling chassis. It provides a nice balanced feel and

AGGRESSIVE, RESPONSIVE AND FAST, THE CFMOTO 400NK SERVES AS AN ENTERTAINING PROPOSITION IN THE SUB-500CC PERFORMANCE SEGMENT

comfortable rider ergonomics. Grip from both the CST radial tires improve stability and encourage sharper steering. Braking is spot on. Stoppage duties are taken care by a 300mm twin disc at the front and a 240mm single disc at the rear with continental ABS system. Braking is a treat during occasional speed runs or panic stopping.

VERDICT:

What you get with the CFMoto 400NK is a practical, rider-friendly motorcycle perfect to tackle the urban jungle and highway runs. Aggressive, responsive and fast, the CFMoto 400NK serves as an entertaining proposition in the sub500cc performance segment. Not only are the 400NK’s riding characteristics impressive, but this bike’s a looker, too. If fun and affordability are atop your purchasing checklist, then take a spin on the CFMoto 400NK. It provides more than the competition at a tempting price. In fact, this is the reason the 400NK is the most exciting product in the market right today.

OWNER’S REVIEW

The Tata Tiago is my first car. Although, I scanned other products too, none of them impressed me like the Tiago did. I thought it would be a great choice to go for the Tiago because it was way ahead in terms of pricing and features as compared with the competition. In fact, I have been very happy about my purchase. Although, it’s a relatively new purchase for me, I have already taken the Tiago to quite a few places outside the valley. It is such a pleasure to drive the Tiago on the highway because of its stability. The interiors are comfortable making the hatchback comfortable for long drives. The car is quite powerful too and has a good ground clearance making it really suitable for our roads. Even on uneven roads, the Tiago fares surprisingly well. The feature-loaded interiors and the amazing infotainment system is something worth mentioning . It is due to these reasons, the Tiago beats the competition by miles ahead. Although, I am yet to take the hatchback for servicing, I believe that Sipradi really works hard to satisfy its customers. It’s already evident in their excellent customer service. To conclude, I believe that Tata Tiago is a good value for money proposition and I would definitely recommend it to others seeking for a dynamic hatchback. In fact, one of my very good friends recently purchased the Tiago.

WHAT IS YOUR ASSESSMENT AND OUTLOOK OF THE ELECTRIC 2-WHEELERS MARKET CONSIDERING THE RECENT SLOWDOWN? The average sale of scooters is around 20,000 units per annum. This alone highlights the reach of scooters in the Nepalese market. Even though the 2-wheelers market is growing at an exponential rate, electric 2-wheelers are yet to take off properly. The main reason is that people are still unaware about the benefits of electric vehicles. However, we believe that customers will eventually embrace electric 2-wheelers in the near future.

“The notion that electric scooters are below par their petrol counterparts is slowly changing. Our scooters function the same way as other scooters with similar performance and ergonomics level” IN CONVERSATION WITH

SAHOKO

GOHIRA Sahoko Gohira, Country Manager – Terra Motors Pvt. Ltd, highlights the company’s strategies and the necessity of electric technology for the Nepalese market. Excerpts: WORDS & PHOTOS : AL TEAM

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

THE GROWTH RATE OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES IS MINIMAL AS COMPARED TO PETROL-POWERED MOTORS. WHAT IS THE STRATEGY? The electric vehicle market is relatively a small market. Even though Terra Motors was the first multinational company to enter this market followed by other companies, the growth of electric vehicles is still nascent. The notion that electric scooters are below par their petrol counterparts is slowly changing. Our scooters function the same way as other scooters with similar performance and ergonomics level. If you look globally, more and more countries are adapting to electric technology. For example, major cities like Shanghai, Beijing etc. are all going electric in the near future. In the Nepalese context, we are confident that we will welcome electric technology in the near future. WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL CHALLENGES THAT ARE OBSTRUCTING THE GROWTH OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES? The main challenge is to convert the negative image of electric scooters and communicate the value to end-user positively. HOW HAS TERRA MOTORS’ GROWTH BEEN IN NEPAL? As a Japanese company, our objectives and obligations are to deliver our world-class products irrespective of the market conditions and we have been

doing the same. We are satisfied with our growth in the Nepalese market. This is the reason why we have “LIFE TIME FREE SERVICE CHARGE” campaign for our customers. WHAT IS YOUR FUTURE VISION? DO YOU FORESEE ELECTRIC TECHNOLOGY MAKING ITS WAY INTO THE NEPALESE MARKET, MAYBE AFTER 15-20 YEARS? We want the Nepalese market to adapt to electric mobility soon. If we introduce the concept of electric mobility after 15-20 years, we wont be able to cope up with the newer technologies. Hence, in order to contribute to the development of electric mobility we are trying to improve our products and communication to the endusers. DO YOU SEE A VALUE FOR MONEY PROPOSITION IN PURCHASING AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE? Of course we do. Electric scooter itself is as powerful as its petrol counterpart and provides more features. The Hyundai Xcent has been given a face lift to keep the customers attracted to it especially with the arrival of new sub-4m compact sedans in the already populated segment. So, has Hyundai done enough to dethrone the new compact sedans and become the new King of the compact sedan segment of 2017? I will walk you through the changes and the differences form the last generation of the Xcent and how much improvement they have made.

EXTERIORS

The new facelift has seen Xcent join the new design language of Hyundai, the latest version of their Fluidic design language with a bigger front cascade grill to give it a more dominating look. Hyundai have introduced a lot of new things in this facelift and some of them are a first in the segment of compact sedans. The list of new features include a drastically redesigned rear section with a two piece wrap around tail light which is inspired from the bigger Elantra opposed to the single piece unit very similar to the one on the Grand i10. The front facade gets LED DRLs just above the fog lamps in sync with the latest trend of LED DRLs. An interesting addition is the use of air curtains in the fog lamp area; the air curtain lets the air flow through the fog lamp area straight to the tires making the car even more aero dynamic as this reduces the drag which results in better performance and slight improvement in the fuel economy.

HYUNDAI HAVE INTRODUCED A LOT OF NEW THINGS IN THIS FACELIFT AND SOME OF THEM ARE A FIRST IN THE SEGMENT OF COMPACT SEDANS.

Similarly, the addition of shark fin antenna is also the first-in-thesegment. The compact sedan also gets a redesigned 14inch allow wheels to keep it looking fresh. The car gets wrap-around rear combination lamps and rear chrome garnish at the back to further heighten its style quotient.

INTERIORS:

The interior of the new Xcent has been only provided a slight update because the interiors of the previous gen Xcent was already decent. However, Hyundai have added new features to make it even more plush and comfortable. The dual-tone Black and Beige dash look plush with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system taking the main spotlight in the middle. The infotainment system is pretty easy to use. The touchscreen system

does come in handy while reversing the car with the help of the rear parking assist system. The inclusion of Android Auto and Apple Car play gives it an advantage over its competitors. The voice recognition system is slick to use while driving. It, however, misses out on the push button start and stop feature but it does include the keyless entry feature. Another feature the new Xcent misses out on is the Automatic Climate control. Though the car gets manual AC, it does get the cooled glove box and rear AC Vents to keep the rear passengers cool/warm depending on the conditions. Other additions include electronically foldable ORVMs, supervision cluster with colour TFT LCD, tilt power steering wheel and an ample boot space.

PERFORMANCE

The Xcent uses the same 1.2 L KAPPA Dual VTVT Engine from the i10 producing 82 BHP @ 6000 RPM and 114NM of torque @ 4000 RPM from the i10. The performance is very good for everyday driving, thanks to the light steering wheel and peppy motor. There isn’t much engine noise in the cabin and the smooth engine ensures a refined drive quality. The compact sedan is little bouncy going over potholes and this results in body roll inside the cabin, but we aren’t complaining. The car comes equipped with ABS to keep the occupants safe and dual Airbags upfront in case of a collision. The steering wheel is light and precise making it very easy to drive and manoeuvre in tight spaces. The exciting blend of power and efficiency, plus optimized aerodynamic performance, makes the new Xcent a powerful and fuelefficient vehicle to drive.

VERDICT

The Xcent has improved quite a lot over these years. Hyundai has not tampered with the performance and driving dynamics of the new Xcent making it a joy to drive. The exterior upgrades do give it a fresh look especially from the rear. The pricing of the Xcent facelift starts from Rs 30, 96,000 for the base variant and goes up to Rs 33, 56,000 for the SX Variant. It really gives its rivals a very stiff competition and whether it dethrones the other compact sedans, only time will tell.

AUTOLIFE WISHLIST

GUNS ARE TO UZI, BIKES ARE TO GUZZI WE WANT THE OLDEST ITALIAN NAME HERE AND NOW. The story takes place in an hangar of Corpo Aeronautico Militare in 1921. Two pilots and their mechanic we’re lazing around and talking about stuff they’d like to do after the war. After probably talking about all the pastas they’d eat and all the women they’d woo, they came to talk about something productive; they wanted to establish a motorcycle company. And apparently, with the diverse backgrounds each one had, Carlo Guzzi wanted to engineer these bikes; Giovanni Ravelli, an already famous pilot and racer, would test. Ride, and promote the bikes; and Giorgio Parodi, the son of wealthy ship-owners, would finance this initiative.

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2017 67

Everything was going well for the trio but as the WWI came to a close, Ravelli died in a crash while testing a new plane. To honor him, the two remaining partners adopted an eagle as their logo. Now, at this point, the two didn’t call themselves Moto Guzzi right away. They got a manufacturing plant in Mandello del Lario, by Lake Como, with the name Guzzi-Parodi, G.P for short, and a lot of their first bikes had this name. Now, Parodi already had his commitments to his ships, and since G.P. was his initials, he didn’t want others to think that the company was solely his, the name was changed to Moto Guzzi. The first bike they engineered was the 8 HP Normale, powered by a single cylinder engine. This engine has been the heart of their bike for almost five decades, with some mods of course. And with a bike that was beating with this heart, Guzzi’s brother took it to the Arctic Circle to prove that both the body and the engine can withstand anything life has to throw at it. This particular bike was a new development, it had what they called an “elastic” body. Back then, bikes were not great for long distances due to a lack of rear shock. So Guzzi came up with an elastic frame using a sheet-steel box enclosing four springs, together with a swingarm in tubes and sheet metal. Since then, he elastic frame rear suspension was immediately introduced to production machines, transforming the usability of the motorcycle as an everyday form of transportation. That was not the only innovation they have made. To begin with, they made bikes that were so much lighter and faster than their contemporaries. Without a doubt, they were speed heads, and interestingly enough, they made something that was too

68

AUTOLIFE OCT/NOV 2017

fast for it’s own good. By 1955, Guzzi had already proven their worth. The V8 was already a pretty fast machine and they made it even faster that they were a fraction away from time travel. They affectionately named it the Otto Cilindri. With an engine that pushed 78 horses at 12000 rpm, the bike could burn the track at a blazing 178 kmph. As a name that could manufacture such bikes, it’s needless to say that they won a lot of competitions.

well as riding positions. Now, Moto Guzzi is an admirable name in the two wheeler industry. Though their name is not as well pronounced as Harley or Triumph, but their prestigious. And we can’t wait to ride them in the near future. We know you don’t care about the history, so let’s cut to the bike we’d love to see.

As you can see, they have a lot under their belt. But they didn’t just make fast bike and cafe racers, they made stuff for them as well. To test these bikes, they made the first motorcycle specific wind tunnel in 1950. And how did they make it? By moding an alternate version of the Eiffel Tower! It was used to check optimal aerodynamics of the bikes, as www.autolife.com.np

I got the Punto Pure 3 months back. The Punto Pure is the best in its segment as it is affordable yet stylish. Hence I opted for this hatchback. Both the exterior and interior of the Punto Pure is attractive. In fact, three of the staff at NCC Bank have recently purchased the Punto Pure. The Punto Pure is attractive. The Punto Pure is a very good bargain for its price range. I have taken the Punto Pure to Narayanghat recently, it is an amazing ride on the highways as well.

Gyanendra Upreti

ASSISTANT MANAGER, NCC BANK

Due to very high ground clearance, the ride quality does not feel bumpy on our roads as compared to other hatchbacks. I find the option of adjustable steering very comfortable. The leg space is also very comfortable for the passengers. So, all in all I have found the Punto Pure to be satisfactory and comfortable is possible. Regarding the sales and the marketing department, I don’t have any complaints as I have found the staffs to be very decent. To conclude, I am very happy with the overall performance of the car and I would definitely recommend it to my friends and family as well.

Owner’s Review Since Skoda is a reputed name, I thought it would be a good choice while making a transition from a hatchback to a sedan. In fact, I have been very happy about my purchase. It is a very luxurious and classy experience as well. It is such a pleasure to drive Rapid on the highway because of its stability. The seats are comfortable making the sedan excellent for long drives although I have just . The car is quite powerful too and has a good ground clearance although it is a sedan which makes is really suitable for the bumpy roads of Kathmandu. The rapid hasn’t let me down, not in terms of breakdowns or an overall experience. Even on narrow roads, the Rapid fares surprisingly well.

Madan Lamsal

Editor in Chief New Business Age Pvt. Ltd

Just like the well-designed exteriors, the interiors are equally luxurious. The sedan is quite spacious and provides an ample shoulder and legroom. The sedan feels upmarket with its sporty essence. The sales service provided by Skoda is by far the best that I have personally experienced. I believe that the company really works hard to satisfy its customers. The best part is that they actually put an effort to convince their customers with dedication and passion.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR RIDE TO MUSTANG… Well, it was something I will never forget for the rest of my life; mesmerizing views, breath-taking landscapes and a very capable machine. THE RIDE YOU TOOK WAS APRILIA SR 150 WHICH WAS PROBABLY THE FIRST EVER TO REACH THERE. HOW DID YOU FIND THE CONFIDENCE? Initially, I was in doubt regarding the pick-up but to my surprise, the pick-up was not at all a problem throughout my ride. The SR150 provided a hassle-free ride irrespective of the riding conditions. WHAT WERE THE DIFFICULTIES YOU FACED DURING THE TRIP? As cliché as it may sound, the scenic beauty motivated me throughout the trip. Regardless, I didn’t encounter any difficulties. The ride was unexpectedly pleasant. WHAT MAKES THE SR150 UNIQUE? The surprisingly good pick-up, handling, acceleration and ground clearance makes the SR150 unique in terms of the competition. Talking about the trip, the SR150 was very comfortable and easy to maneuver through the difficult terrain. WHERE ARE YOU PLANNING TO TAKE YOUR SR150 NEXT? I will probably take my SR150 to Rara next as I am fully confident with its performance and ergonomics. WHAT ARE THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT PIECES OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO IS SETTING OUT ON THEIR TRIP TO MUSTANG ON THE SR 150? Well, for someone who is willing to take the SR150 on this epic trip, I would like to suggest these three things: • Find a guide because it gets confusing without a guide and a map. • Take a tool box (screwdriver, mobile, and air pump), extra fuel, water and dry fruits. • Add handle bar covers to ride smoothly in off-road conditions and make sure you have your tire pressure checked to have a comfortable ride.
