The NADA Autoshow is always a high point of the year for all auto enthusiasts, but for us here at AutoLife, the actual fun starts when the event ends. For the few months after the auto expo, we get to test drive/ride some of the freshest new wheels in the Nepali market. What follows, is us going slightly overboard with a review heavy issue such as the one you’re holding right now. But hey, who’s complaining? In this issue you will be reading about a much awaited crossover, a value for money compact sedan, a rejuvenated legend and a revamped Italian hatchback. Which should be enough to keep you going for the rest of the month. First in line is the Japanese crossover, Toyota Etios Cross which we took to Tokha to give really test how it performed. We ended up deeming this Toyota the best amongst those carrying the Etios badge, read more about how we came into the conclusion. Second in line is one of the best value for money vehicles in the Nepali roads at the moment. Jam packed with features and comfort, the Hyundai Xcent really caught our attention with an enticing price tag. Of course, we had to determine for ourselves whether the Xcent was a great package or a cheaply priced mechanical box. Luckily, it wasn’t the latter. Third, we reviewed the heir of one of the most successful touring capacitated motorcycles of its time: The Hero Karizma. After more than a decade of waiting the new model of the Karizma finally surfaced in the Nepali market and without a doubt we straddled the machine to see if it was worthy to be crowned as a worthy successor. Last, but certainly not the least, we tested the Fiat Punto Evo. Now under the Life Automobiles dealership, they have breathed new life into the Fiat moniker with the much awaited Fiat Punto Evo and the soon to be launched new Linea. Check out our review of the lovable hatchback inside. Apart from the reviews in our jam-packed issue, we also feature the monstrous beauty of the Mercedes AMG 6x6 on our wish list. And, after hearing rumors of Aprilia coming to town we couldn’t help but skim through the history of the motorcycle company. Read more about its evolution. We hope you enjoy this issue of AutoLife Magazine… stay tuned for the next issue, because, believe it or not, we will be taking you to the Everest Base camp. Cheers!

AUTOLIFE NEWS: INDIA
MARUTI CIAZ LAUNCHED Maruti Suzuki India has launched the much-anticipated Ciaz sedan. Launched in the price bracket of Rs. 7 - 9.80 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), Ciaz replaces SX4 in the country. While the car is comparatively least powered among its competitors, save for the Linea, there is lot more going in its favour. The car is claimed to be the most fuel-efficient and feature-rich car in its league. Their new launch, the Ciaz, has a waiting period of nearly 3 months in major metros like Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. The news is no different in smaller Tier II cities where the sedan has a minimum waiting period of a month. According to the company, the Ciaz received more than 10,000 bookings even before its market launch on October 6. However, Maruti anticipated this demand and started production of the car as early as August this year. Yet, there seems to be a demand-supply gap, which is traditionally associated with any new product launch, and more so for Marutis.
KAWASAKI Z250 AND ER-6N LAUNCHED IN INDIA Kawasaki has expanded its Indian-product portfolio by launching two new motorcycles, Z250 and ER-6N. Both these bikes join the range of naked street bikes, the Z800 and the Z1000. The Z250 is positioned alongside the Ninja 300, while the
MARUTI VETERAN MAYANK PAREEK SHIFTS TO TATA MOTORS Tata Motors ropes in Mayank Pareek, former chief operating officer (marketing and sales) of rival Maruti Suzuki, to be its passenger car business unit’s president. Pareek succeeds Ranjit Yadav, who is moving into a new role within Tata Motors as head of international business for passenger and commercial vehicles. Pareek, who took up his post on October 1, will also be a member of Tata Motors’ corporate steering committee (CSC), which oversees the operations of the auto major. The CSC, headed by chairman Cyrus Mistry, was formed following the sudden demise of the company’s managing director Karl Slym early this year. Pareek’s appointment comes at a time when the Indian auto giant looks to strengthen sales of its domestic passenger vehicle unit, which reported a decline in the first quarter of fiscal 2015 as against the year-ago period. A product of Indian Institute of Technology-BHU, Pareek was one of the known faces at Maruti Suzuki, where he had worked for more than two decades and was involved in several launches, including the Celerio hatchback and the Swift DZire compact

ER-6N will be positioned along with its faired version, the Ninja 650. The new Kawasaki Z250 is powered by a 249cc; liquidcooled, parallel-twin engine that makes 32 bhp of power and 21 Nm of torque. In terms of styling, the Z250 is a scaled-down version of the Kawasaki Z800. The bike borrows the tail section, exhaust, instrument cluster, Y-spoke alloy among others from the Ninja 300 Similarly, the Kawasaki ER-6N is the street- bike version of the Kawasaki Ninja 650. The major visual differences are the stubby headlight, fuel tank extensions and exposed radiator. Powering the Kawasaki ER-6n is a 649cc, liquid-cooled motor similar to the Ninja 650 which generates 72.1 bhp of power and 64Nm of torque. The Z250 is priced at INR 2.99 lakh, while the ER6N is priced at INR 4.78 lakh. No word yet on availability in Nepal, though somehow we doubt that we will see these machines next year.
sedan. He has also managed to keep the Japanese carmaker’s sales going over the past two years when the Indian automobile industry was on a slump. “His extensive experience in the passenger car market will play a significant role in harnessing Tata Motors growth potential to help position the company as one of the leading passenger car manufacturers in India,” Tata Motors said in a statement. After almost five years, Tata Motors, part of the $100-billion Tata conglomerate, launched its first new offering, the Zest compact Sedan in August to boost the passenger vehicle unit’s performance as it was losing market share to foreign players. The company’s domestic passenger vehicle deliveries dipped 37% in the June quarter, according to industry body, SIAM India. However, in recent quarters, the weak performance of Tata Motors’ India unit has been more than compensated by sales of its British unit, Jaguar Land Rover. steering wheel, leather upholstery and Touch-screen navigation & infotainment system that also allows a user to synch his smartphone. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
Owner’s Review I drive a Skoda Rapid Ambition Plus. I chose to purchase this particular vehicle as Skoda happens to be an extremely reputed European brand with a great automobile pedigree. In addition, it is also the first in the line of new models to come up with the manufacturer’s latest design language. I love the look of this car. Just by looking at it you can clearly say see it carries off the Skoda reputation well. It has a very distinctive shape, an aerodynamic flow and the gentle curves make it a very elegant looking car. Regarding the interior, it has got almost everything that you desire to have in a car to make your ride smooth and fun. The handle function for the side indicator, head lamps, wipers are unique to Skoda which might confuse any driver for the first few times. The 1.6 MPI engine producing a 153 Nm of torque at 3800 rpm is smooth and silent. Talking about the overall performance, this car has decent ground clearance and handles the bumps and potholes easily. In a nutshell, I would give the rapid 8 out of 10 for performance, 8 for handling and 8 for power which in my opinion is decent for an economic city sedan.
Pawon Verma
CEO, VERMA GROUP, NEWROAD
And another thing that makes me feel fortunate is its excellent customer service. Even though it has already been six months since the purchase, they make sure they check up with us from time to time. It’s evident that they are not selling cars but they are selling services to clients. All in all, I have had a very good driving experience so far. I would say it gave me the best it can and I am satisfied, and if I have to recommend a sedan car to somebody it would definitely be Rapid.

Although its bumper and front grille are slightly different from its smaller siblings it still holds striking resemblance to them. The Mercedez Benz G 63 AMG 6x6 is the personification of intimidation. It is the equivalent of a steroid infused bodybuilder who is the size of door and runs out of weight plates to pile on the squat rack. This monster makes a 4x4 look like a taxi cab. We couldn’t help but imagine the mayhem we may perhaps unleash on the roads of Kathmandu if we were to own one of these monsters. Although getting around traffic would be a pain, you would always have the option of bullying your way through. All sadistic thoughts aside, this is a beast on wheels, six of them. The colossal double-cab pickup started out as an even more rugged military version of the G320 CDI which was made for the Australian army and in operation since 2011. Measuring in at a whooping 5.85m long and 2.3m tall you wouldn’t think it would be too supple on its feet. But it is. With the G63’s 540bhp, 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8, the G63 AMG 6x6 can hit 62mph in seven seconds. It isn’t possible to think of a better candidate to tackle offroad terrains on than this monstrously huge beauty.

6X6 TECHNOLOGY A look at the key data of the G 63 AMG 6x6 makes it clear that this model’s off-road world begins at a point where anything less than a vehicle with caterpillar tracks would have to capitulate. Six driven wheels, an off-road low-range ratio in the transfer case, portal axles, five differential locks which can be engaged on the move and a tyre-pressure control system which allows the pressure in the huge 37-inch tyres to be adjusted in record time while the vehicle is running – all these are features which one seeks in vain in conventional cross-country vehicles. Together, they ensure that the G 63 AMG 6x6 has driving dynamics which are more than a match for the toughest terrain. As a result, the show vehicle is able to storm up the highest sand dunes with ease while sand tracks hold no fears thanks to its unshakable directional stability. Rocky terrain is negotiated with all the agility of a mountain goat; fording a river becomes almost child’s play thanks to the impressive fording capability of one meter. And anyone exploring the on-road performance is certain to be impressed by the catapult-like acceleration of this 3.85-tonne pickup.

THE NEW HYUNDAI XCENT IS THE BOOTED VERSION OF THE HYUNDAI GRAND I10 AND IT IS SET UP TO MAKE ITS SPACE IN THE COMPETITIVE MARKET OF COMPACT SEDANS.
The Hyundai Accent was launched back in 1999, a whooping 14 years ago. Considering the fact that you still see it around, it’s safe to say that the Accent faired very well in the market. The new Hyundai Xcent is their new entry level sedan which cleverly plays off the name of its predecessor, enabling Hyundai to play it safe in terms of customer perception instead of coming out with a completely brand new badge. Unlike the Accent however, the Xcent is a sub-4 meter sedan. Excise duties levied in cars in India is based on various conditions. One condition states that if the length of the car is less than 4 metres, the excise duty levied is 8%. But, as soon as the length increases to more than 4 metre, the excise duty increases to 20%. This excise duty condition gave birth to a completely new car segment called compact sedans, which basically categorizes hatchbacks with a tiny trunk added on. And like the Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Mahindra Quanto and Ford Ecosport Hyundai too enjoys the lowest excise duty slab of 8% with the Xcent. The new Hyundai Xcent is the booted version of the Hyundai Grand i10 and it is set up to make its space in the competitive market of compact sedans. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE October 2014 35
Hyundai made a strong impression with the Grand i10, and we were rearing to find out if the Xcent would do the same. EXTERIOR Like all compact sedans, the Hyundai Xcent also does its best to give the car a sedan look at hatchback prices. Doing that under the 4 meter barrier and still making the car look good can be a difficult task. The good thing is that the Grand i10 was a decent looking hatch back and the Xcent looks near identical to it from the front; the only difference being the chrome lining on the Xcent’s hexagonal grille and this top-spec car’s larger 15-inch wheels that are unique to the sedan. Although, with the attractive diamond cut alloys and chrome accent missing, it makes the basic variant look a little bland. The front end features swept back head lamps and angular fog lamp inserts. The sides don’t feature any prominent lines or curves, apart from the waist line moulding. Now, when it comes to the tail end of compact sedans, most manufacturers falter. However, unlike some other compact sedans, the tail end of the Xcent flows seamlessly with the rest of the vehicle. Consequently making it seem like the added boot section was a planned affair 36 AUTOLIFE October 2014

instead of just being a gimmicky afterthought. It integrates with the roof smoothly and complements the blunt front end of the Xcent, giving it a sense of proportion. INTERIORS Hyundai rarely disappoints when it comes to making an impact of drivers once they step inside. The Xcent is no exception, and hits the nail on the head with a well executed interior. The attention to quality is evident. Drivers will not only see that the chunky steering wheel and smartly detailed gear lever are appealing to the eye but they will be able to feel the drive. Also impressive is the two toned dashboard which accommodates all of the audio and air condition controls. The automatic climate control system is a welcome inclusion and works well to maintain a cool temperature in the cabin. There are a number of first in its segment components in the Xcent which are available on top variant, such as dual airbags, ABS, keyless entry & go, reverse parking sensors, reversing camera, electrically folding mirrors, gearshift suggestion tool, rear air-con, cooled glove box and 1 GB of on-board memory for your MP3s. Steering rake and seat height adjustment make it easy to find a comfortable driving position and overall adjustability in the middle and top spec versions are good. Passengers will also be comfortable as the Xcent features ample leg room. PERFORMANCE In the variant we test drove, under the hood is the same facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE October 2014 37
1.2 L 16V DOHC unit from the Grand i10 which features variable valve timing technology that claims to offer good performance and efficiency. The engine puts out 83PS at 6000rpm and 114Nm of torque at 4000rpm. It is preppy off the mark and maneuvers very well within the city exhibiting sure footedness. Power delivery is precise and the five-speed gear box is smooth and seamless. The smooth gear box makes short shifting a welcome affair combined with the refined engine. On open roads, the Xcent still does not let you down. It shoots up to the 100km/h mark at a respectably short period of time and keeps going without showing signs of strain or stress for quite a while after that. The Xcent also absorbs the bumps pretty, thudding only on big bumps. The car comes to a halt quickly but brake feel could have been better. There is a fair bit of body roll going around corners, and we could have done with a bit more feel on the electrically assisted steering wheel. ABS isn’t standard and only optional for both the S and SX variants.

VERDICT It is difficult for a compact sedan to appear aesthetically stunning, the Xcent is not a head turner. It is rather simple, especially on the tail end. That being said, it must be mentioned that the Xcent is not a bad looking car. It delivers everything it promises. Despite looking like a well balanced in its segment of compact sedans, the Xcent does fall behind in comparison to Hyundai’s other fluidic designed cars. But, whatever it lacks in stunning looks, it makes up for with value for money and ride quality. Well refined engine, quality interiors and a number of first in its segment features leave little room for serious complaints. Add to it the jaw dropping starting price of Rs. 24,96,000, the Xcent is all set to be a big seller.

POINT OF
EVOLUTION FIAT PUNTO EVO
From their rich cuisine to their zealous culture, Italy exudes a sense of passion and romance into everything they do. And this, of course, translates into the automobiles that come out of the country. Italian automobiles have won the hearts of people the world over with names like Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa Romeos that send our pulses racing. Today, Fiat dominates the automotive industry of Italy encompassing those very names along with nine other giants under its massive umbrella.

In 2013, Fiat (together with Chrysler) was the second largest European automaker by volumes produced, and the seventh in the world ahead of Honda, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Suzuki, Renault and Daimler AG. Long story short, the Fiat S.p.A is a name of epic proportions. Rumor has it that Nepal might have been able to see the Fiat 500 grace our roads, if it weren’t for our subpar fuel quality. Nevertheless, Fiat has offered us a number of their vehicles amongst which the Punto and Linea stand out. Previously headed by the Batas Brothers Pvt. Ltd., Fiat will now be sold under the name of Life Automobile Pvt. Ltd. And, as their first course of action, they have launched the new Fiat Punto Evo in the Nepali market. Although only a midrange variant, the Dynamic, is available at the moment; the host of new features the evolved Punto boasts about made it something to look forward to. We put it to the test to experience the evolution for ourselves.
INTERIORS The Fiat Punto Evo definitely gets your attention when you step into the cabin. The Fiat Punto Evo borrows much of its interiors from the New Linea including the dashboard, centre console and the instrument cluster. Its dual tone dashboard has very good finish and the stylish ambient lighting on the instrument along with fabric inserts on door trims and door inserts completed the premium feel. The instrument cluster features a number of selections ranging from programmable speed limit buzzer, real time mileage indicators to indications about whether any doors have been left ajar. The instrument cluster displays a digital clock, odometer, trip meter, distance to empty along with other telltale indications. The higher variant, Emotion, has even more creature comforts than the Dynamic, more than what you’d expect from a hatchback. The highest variant features automatic climate control, Bluetooth telephony, 44 AUTOLIFE October 2014

sms readout, steering mounted audio controls. Air bags and ABS are luxuries available only in the higher variant. It also boasts of features like automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers and rear air con vents. Driver and passenger seats are amazingly comfortable, one of the best in its segment; however the space front does receive a blow if one of the inhabitants of the vehicle is larger than the average Nepali man (say over 6 feet tall). With either of the front seats slid back, there is barely any leg room in the back seat. However, for normal sized people, the Punto Evo comfortably seats 3 people in the back.
EXTERIORS The Fiat Punto Evo’s predecessor was a good looking hatchback, but it was in need of an upgrade. Thankfully, it would be fair to say that the cosmetic overhaul of the Punto Evo has made it even better looking than before. Rechristened as per the international markets, the Punto Evo, gets a refreshed face that gains inspiration from the Avventura. That was not the plan, and the Punto Evo was supposed to get a different face, but the people at Fiat changed their minds after the overwhelming response the Avventura received at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. Up front, a massive trapezoidal front grille and swept back reindeer headlights steal the show which is well integrated with a redesigned bumper with chromed housing for the fog lamps. The bonnet sports a bulge with two prominent lines running down all the way to the Fiat logo which has been bumped up and placed above the grille. The side profile does remain the same, much like the rear. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t look splendid. The chrome treatment has
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE October 2014 45
been carried on to the back end where the back lights are housed with chrome. The LED tail-lamps of the Punto Evo look gorgeous and are the same as the ones seen on the international version.
PERFORMANCE When it comes to ride and handling, the Fiat Punto Evo is a treat. The driving position is perfect with appropriate visibility. Maneuvering the car in busy traffic may seem slightly heavy due to its hydraulic steering at first but it gets much lighter once you gain speed. The steering feels well weighted and confident even while cornering at high speeds which help you establish a connection with the car instantly. Combine it to the stiff suspensions and you have one of the most accurately steering cars in its segment. Sticking to the lines does come at the price of a significant amount of body roll but we’ll take it. It very easily adapts to the roads of Kathmandu and makes easy work of the potholes making for a very comfortable and smooth ride. Of course, since it does boast of the highest ground clearance in its segment, we put it to the test. Even on roads that you’d practically consider off-road terrain, the Punto Evo handled itself pretty well. Had it been any other car, our hearts would have jumped up to our throats and stayed there for some time. Power delivery of the 1.2L variant we tested was satisfactory, although it lacked a sense of urgency. It doesn’t gallop like a wild stallion when you thrust your foot on the accelerator. The power range is best within the 2000rpm to 4000rpm band. Going any higher causes the car to make a lot of noise without showing much power gain. The gear box is also respectable considering that it went through little to no change from its predecessor, and the car is most fun to drive when you play with the gear shift to stay in the powerband.

VERDICT The Punto Evo brings in a much needed evolution to the Fiat Punto. Yes, they might be predominantly cosmetic upgrades but that is usually only what you need when you already have a good car. The Punto Evo without a doubt is one of the models that you cannot ignore when considering a premium hatch, a market that already has cut throat competition. Italian designs that give the Punto Evo the European touch really gives it an aesthetic advantage over most other cars in its segment. The high ground clearance might play a pivotal role for many potential buyers considering its importance in the roads of Nepal. It would be even more amazing if the higher variant was also made available in our markets, a possibility the people at Life Automobiles have not completely shut out. Now, under new management, Fiat might be looking at a whole new chapter in Nepal. The upgraded Linea will also be coming and the chances of the Avventura surfacing in the country look bright. The Punto Evo satisfied us with its aesthetics and adaptability to our roads while not compromising on the ride quality. Add to it the precision in finishing and quality, and it is sure to make owners happy campers.

When Volkswagen introduced the Cross Polo, the segment of crossover utility vehicles boomed. Ford followed suit and introduced the highly popular Ford EcoSport. Soon crossovers started gaining popularity. All crossovers share a common ground, beefing up their existing model platforms with rugged looking body kit and enhanced capabilities. Japanese carmakers Toyota have their version of the crossover in the form of a beefed up Etios Liva. The love for crossovers is growing in the Nepali market and the entry of one from a loved brand like Toyota did manage to bring a smile on a lot of faces. The Etios Liva was pretty standard and not much of a head turner, but the Etios Cross looks to bring a change to that. When we got the opportunity to take it out for a test drive, we were very excited. To make the most of the chance, we took it up to Tokha to see what it had to offer.
The Etios Cross features matte-finished black plastic cladding all around. Up front is a bold front grille and bull bar.
EXTERIOR
In all honesty, the Toyota Etios Cross is an Etios Liva dressed up in a lot of plastic cladding. And this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. What the Liva was lacking in terms of head turning capabilities, the Etios Cross makes up for with a strong visual presence. It exudes a muscular appearance thanks to a number of additions to the exterior. The Etios Cross features matte-finished black plastic cladding all around. B-pillar, spoiler, diamond-cut 15-inch alloy wheels, ‘Etios Cross’ badging on the boot lid and sides, ORVMs with turn indicators and rear window defogger with wiper, all of which make it seem like Toyota might have given the Etios Liva some off roading capabilities. Although the cladding makes the Etios Cross 120 mm longer, 40 mm wider and 45 mm taller than the Etios Liva, the ground clearance, wheel base and turning radius have barely changed. Which does raise the question of how much more enhanced the Cross is compared to the hatchback in terms of utility. Toyota has gone for more satin finishes than chrome, which does work out nicely for the entire design. The headlights have additional reflective extensions that connect them to the bull bar and front turn blinkers have moved from the headlamps onto the bumper on top of the fog lights. INTERIORS
Inside, the Etios Cross features piano black interiors with gloss and matt finishes giving it a sportier feel. The top-spec V variants get chrome accents around the gear shifter and the air-con vents. It has a centrally mounted speedometer and tachometer with a blue black light and double DIN audio system with Bluetooth 60 AUTOLIFE October 2014

telephony and steering mounted audio controls. New fabric upholstery gets the ‘Etios Cross’ badge embroidered in the front seats. The lack of electrically adjustable wing mirrors, even on the top spec variants was shocking. On the space and comfort front, the Etios Cross scores high marks. There is ample leg room for everyone in the cabin. There are air bags for both driver and passenger. The newly developed air conditioning system in the Liva is carried on to the Cross ensuring superior cooling.
The interior of the Etios Cross ticks all the right boxes and is probably one of the best things about the new Etios Cross. PERFORMANCE
Having put so much effort on the appearance of the crossover, we were looking forward to seeing how well it fared in terms of performance. We got our hands on the 1.2 liter petrol variant and put it to the test. The preppy nature of the petrol engine was utilized to its fullest as we made our way out of the city turmoil and into the roads

winding up through the hills of Tokha. It performed well in traffic and the handling of the car shone on account of its light steering. Since the changes on the Cross are purely cosmetic, the maximum power output of 79bhp and torque of 104Nm remains unchanged from the Liva. The throttle response in lower revs is good and it does well on the highway as well. We did feel a lag in pulling capacity on steep climbs but it wasn’t enough for us to complain about it. Transmission is slick and changing through gears is a fun ordeal. Suspension is also pretty absorbent and does a decent job of tackling our roads. With all the spruced up fairings to make it look like an offroader, the Etios Cross doesn’t fit the bill in terms of performance. The ground clearance is the same and there is no 4x4 capability. As good as the ride quality is in the Cross, it is still pretty much similar to the Etios Liva. To be honest, the Etios Cross has little added real offroad credentials to the Liva. In fact, it was difficult for us to bring it to do any serious offroading. 62 AUTOLIFE October 2014

VERDICT This is by far the best in the Etios range that Toyota has on offer, and it looks like the Japanese car manufacturers are heading in the right direction in the small car segment. But has it hit the nail on the head yet? Maybe not. It does a good job of injecting a heavy dose of style into its hatchback platform to create a very good looking crossover. It is definitely an attention grabber and performs very well in the city and is tame off roads. If you are looking for an efficient crossover utility vehicle with good looks and capable ride quality, the Etios Cross will satisfy. As always, the Toyota badge will do its bit to satisfy most loyal consumers and to some extent it will help justify the price range as well.

the birth of aprilia Aprilia is an Italian motorcycle company which started out as a scooter manufacturer after the Second World War. The company was founded by Cavalier Alberto Beggio, who at first intended to manufacture bicycles. But all of this changed when his son, Ivan Beggio, joined the company in 1968.
Aprilia RSV4 Racing
It was Ivan Beggio who built the first Aprilia motorcycle, a 50cc model painted in gold and blue. Because the model registered moderate success they decided to continue making motor vehicles and produced the first Aprilia mopeds: the Colibri and Daniela. The first “real motorcycle” from Aprilia was the 1970 Scarabeo cross bike which was produced until the mid-seventies, in different versions ranging from 50 to 125cc capacities. What many consider the first true cross bike didn’t come until 1974 and this model was tested by Maurizio Sgarzani. After undergoing numerous tests, they developed a street bike from this cross model, called the RC 125. This model was presented at
Aprilia Tuono V4 Supernaked
the Milan Salon and was very well received by the public. Another moped from Aprilia came in 1976, a 49cc called Partner. Later, they introduced 49cc Minarelli engines to this model but this didn’t make it go faster or sell better.

In terms of motorsports, Aprilia won their first title in 1977, when Ivan Alborghetti managed to win the Italian championship in the 125 and 250cc classes. It wasn’t until the 1980s that Aprilia introduced enduro, trial and road bikes to its range. In 1981 they presented the TL320 trial bike and two years later the St 125. Then, in 1984, they released an improved model, named STX and an enduro bike called ET 50. Another important move in the 80s was the outsourcing of Rotax engines for some of their models, and the launch of the 125 STX and the 350 STX. Wanting a more rugged approach, Aprilia launched a large tanked bike for African rallies, called the Tuareg (no connection whatsoever with the Volkswagen Touareg) in 1986. AUTOLIFE October 2014 65
By the end of the 1980s, in 1988 to be more exact, the US started to import Aprilia bikes. First, the TRX312M was imported and after that came The Climber, the first mass-produced bike to be liquid cooled. In 1990, another bike derived from off-road vehicles came, the Pegaso 600, and two years later, Aprilia driver Alessandro Gramigni won the World 125 Road racing Championship title. 1992 proved to be a successful year for Aprilia in motorsports, whenTommy Ahvala won the World Trials Championship on an Aprilia Climber. What is probably the most important motorcycle from Aprilia didn’t come until 1998, when the Italian manufacturer launched the RSV Mille, a 1000cc V2 Superbike and a sport tourer called Falco, which also had a 1000cc V2 engine. To get back to more recent events, Aprilia became part of the Piaggio Group in 2004. With the re-organisation of the Noale Racing Division, the Group has broadened the horizons of its racing activities, from the return to off-road competitions to the World Superbike debut - in 2009 - of the Aprilia RSV4. This highly successful project has secured five world titles from 2010 to 2013. Today the extensive Aprilia motorcycle offer presents a varied range of models, whose common features are state-of-theart technology and a sporty personality: from the twin-cylinder naked Shiver 750 to the Dorsoduro supermotard (in two displacements, 750 and 1200), from the Mana 850, the world’s first automatic motorbike, to the very latest entry, the Caponord 1200, a formidable tourer, from the supernaked Tuono V4 to the RSV4 family, available in two versions, the R and the Factory, based directly on the reigning world SBK champion bike.

With a wealth of technical solutions leveraging its unique racing experience, today the Aprilia motorcycle range has established an absolute technological leadership. The bikes’ impeccable chassis – always a key Aprilia strength – are combined with cutting-edge engine technology (the RSV4 is the only massproduced racing V4 engine in the world) and an undisputed primacy in electronic rider support systems. With each Aprilia motorcycle, the experience built up at racing events all over the world is transferred to the everyday user, to boost performance and safety. The Aprilia scooter range is equally impressive: the flagship Aprilia SRV850 is the most powerful scooter ever produced and features an advanced electronic control package with traction control and ABS. In 2015, the MotoGP grid will expand with the return of Aprilia, following the recent announcement by Aprilia and Gresini Racing on their four-year MotoGP agreement. With rumors that the Aprilia moniker might be coming to Nepal, we can’t help but hope that everything falls into place. Till then, we’ll keep our fingers crossed and keep you updated.

At a time when the two wheeler market was pretty much reigned over by mediocre 150cc engines, the Hero Honda Karizma came as a breath of fresh air to the power starved motorcycle enthusiasts. It was the first sports bike from an Indian company to come to the Nepali market. Packing an awesome 17 horse power in a 223cc engine, the Karizma addressed all of the riders who had a passion for speed, power and a good looking motorcycle. Yes, it fell on the pricier side of the spectrum, but for people who wanted a fast sporty motorcycle at a reasonable price, the Karizma was the idle machine. However, that was 11 years ago. Apart from a few cosmetic upgrades and an added variant with the Karizma ZMR, the beloved motorcycle showed little signs bringing about any major changes. Until now. FEATURES AND STYLING In 2003 when Hero Honda unveiled the Karizma stole the hearts of many when it unveiled its robust aerodynamic frame in its bikini fairing. 11 years later, Hero has tried to maintain the core looks of the motorcycle by adding to it some serious modern flair. The new avatar of the Hero Karizma R is long, low and appears to be inspired by Hero’s American partner Erick Buell Racing’s 1190RX. The inspiration is more evident from the Karizma R’s muscular front fairing featuring massive vertically stacked twin headlamps which pretty much dominate the front end. The front end also facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
incorporates rectangular indicators, a set of LED DRL (daylight running lights) and a decent looking belly cowl. The tail end has also undergone a massive overhaul; however, its narrow fairing is a polar opposite to its very big front face. It now features vertically stacked LED lamps on the narrow out tail piece. The split seats and wider section tires give it a sporty look while maintaining the comfort factor. On the cockpit, Hero has kept things pretty much the same with the three-pod cluster which displays the rev meter and odometer and a digital trip meter. The engine kill switch is still missing and the fuel cap comes off which are can be irksome. But the new clip-on handlebars are a great addition both aesthetically and AUTOLIFE October 2014 71
functionally. They are narrow in width and replace the chrome handlebar of the old Karizma. Overall, the new Hero Karizma R looks robust, and it does retain the charisma of its predecessor. However, it only manages to look pretty from a few angles. PERFORMANCE When the Hero Honda Karizma first came into the market, it was what every bike enthusiast was waiting for; an affordable high performance motorcycle that packed

72 AUTOLIFE October 2014
enough oomph to give it a sports-bike feel. Yes, the looks were accountable for a major portion of the popularity, the engine was what took everyone’s breath away. Now, the new tuned 223 cc engine took the compression of the new engine of 9.1 to 9.6:1. This creates better economy, something the old Karizma was not particularly known for, as well as improved performance. The new engine also dishes out an increased power by 2.2PS and 1Nm. The new output is 20.23PS of the power at 8,000rpm as well as 19.7Nm of torque at 6,500rpm, both at 1000rpm lower than its predecessor. The new engine is substantially punchier than the old model and the increased rear section tyres with clip on handle bars make this motorcycle a pleasure. Despite being on the bulkier side, the Hero Karizma R handles very well. Of course it isn’t as nimble as a small commuter but it is calm and assertive in traffic and does not exert any heaviness. Although you can feel the increased wheelbase on turns, cornering is stable and you’ll be looking to lean in to any curve you see, thanks to the clip-ons. Gear shifts are seamless and power delivery is on par. However, this machine is most fun at the 5000rpm-8000rpm range. Combined with the long gear ratios, the performance of the motorcycle excels when you go for the long facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

highway hauls. The wider power spread means that you need few gear changes to keep the motorcycle on the boil. It is clear that the new Karizma has retained and refined its touring capabilities. You can go crazy on the throttle and get the speedo dial to make haste, but revving it past a certain extent will make your hands go numb. We were just able to go past the 120km mark but getting past the 100km/h mark is child’s play.
R does not disappoint the legacy set by its predecessor. It is fast, responsive and an overall fun ride whether in heavy traffic or open highways. The motorcycle exudes a tourey feel and a coast to coast ride through the country on the Karizma R seems like a tempting ordeal.
Braking does not disappoint and does not skimp on safety, though it could use a little more bite. But it’s still not a point to complain about.
There are motorcycles that might be punchier, but there are few in the segment that can over throw the Karizma in terms of touring capabilities. Well… maybe by its predecessor, for the sole reason that the older model has a slightly more hospitable riding position for long rides. But with the refined engine, that too is quite debatable.
VERDICT In terms of performance, the new Karizma
Yes, it could have looked better as the Erik Buell inspirations do seem slightly out of
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
place, but the expansive framework has made the motorcycle extremely spacious. This will be gladly welcomed by taller riders. The new Hero Karizma R isn’t perfect. It has its share of niggles like a missing engine kill switch, tedious pillion seat removal and refitting and flimsy rearview mirror mounts. But once you switch on the ignition and switch into gear, all of that becomes redundant. The new Hero Karizma R serves as a rejuvenated avatar of its popular forerunner and the refinements bring on a noticeable improvement. It is a highly capable city slicker and a much better tourer.

AUTOLIFE FEATURE
A SMART HEAD ON YOUR SHOULDERS Compiled by Yonten Yonjan hen the Skully video surfaced on the internet, it had us at AutoLife giddy with joy. A futuristic world we never thought existed was opened to our eyes. What this basically is hands down the world’s smartest helmet. Skully, a truly revolutionary product, is a motorcycle helmet which has a heads-up display and a rear-facing camera. The AR-1 (AR stands for Augmented Reality) is the first helmet from the team at Skully and features the first HUD system available for a motorcycle helmet. The main features of the AR-1 are its 180-degree, rearfacing camera, and a little screen placed in the bottom right portion of your field of view. The screen allows you to see everything behind you, no matter which direction your helmet is facing, without any blind spots. The liner used in the AR-1 was created by a company called Outlast. Originally created for NASA, the material is designed to either absorb, store, or release heat, depending on the ambient temperature. Outlast is not a sweat-wicking technology, but is meant to help control the temperature to
74 AUTOLIFE October 2014
keep you from sweating in the first place. The new face shield uses an electrochromatic liquid crystal technology called e-Tint, originally created by a company called AlphaMicron for the military and now adapted for commercial use. It lets the rider switch the visor between tinted and un-tinted at the push of a button. The rear spoiler that contains the camera and processor is designed to break off instantly on impact, so it doesn’t affect the way your head may potentially hit the pavement. It is still a prototype though, and the team from Skully says to look for a major announcement around the beginning of August and that we should start seeing Skully helmets available within the first part of next year. Check out their video that had us hyperventilating.
