Happy New Year...
I
t’s the end of 2011 and the beginning of probably the most awaited year in history, with that entire hullabaloo about the possible end of life on Earth. Yes, 2012 is finally sneaking through! Not sure if we too should start believing that the Earth would be taking its final spin, but, we certainly are excited about the new grounds that we might cover in twenty-twelve. So it’s all good for us. Also from the overwhelming support that we have received for our first two issues, the year looks promising for us and we are completely psyched about it. “Action packed” should be the right expression that describes this New Year’s issue. Our cover story for this month is Wishlist 2012, where we have compiled an elaborative list of all those spanking new wheels that are scheduled to arrive here in 2012. Most of them will definitely be seen at our showrooms in a few months while the rest; we absolutely want it to make it along too. Why not right? We have also taken our test reviews to the next level with full blown reviews of not 1-2-3 but 4 products. We got on all fours in the Toyota HILUX, took on the dusty trails with the Demak DMX R, had a luxurious experience with the Tata ARIA and sped around the city in the sexy new Yamaha R15. Our short road trip to Kakani on the new Yamaha FZ-S should be a breather for all of those who always wanted to make that quick trip. Now get your motors running and head out to the highway soon. For a change, we have added a quiz section that’s based on the technical jargons that were published in Issue 1 and 2 and the winner wins tickets to QFX Cinemas. Though it’s relatively easy we still encourage cheating, just like how most of us made it through school. So get it right, win the tickets, grab your popcorn and enjoy. We are also starting a readers’ section where we publish your letters and pictures from your auto-life. Totally excited about this since it’s only for you that we have been working our asses off. So, please send us pictures from your auto-life and don’t forget to write to us about anything AUTO! Not every day comes by when you get the chance to be featured in a national level magazine for what you love most. Start typing right away to hello@autolife. com.np. Finally, thanks to all our supporters and readers for getting us started at a quick pace. Be with us and we will keep surprising you with our passion and commitment for wheels.
HAPPY NEW YEAR !!! PS: Look around for all those various potholes, bumps and debris on the road with all that road widening construction going around in the capital. Sorry for all those who lost personal property in the process but we really hope traffic jams will now be the talk of yesteryears in Kathmandu.

My love for driving sparked from that very day as a kid when I started reversing the car for Dad, from our garage till the driveway. I used to do that religiously every morning and even Dad was kind enough to not kill my enthusiasm by always acting as if he needed my help. I was so eager to learn how to drive back then that I really didn’t make out that he could have actually managed that on his own. I first learnt driving seated on my Dad’s lap, taking control of the steering wheel and with Dad doing the footwork and gearing. For most kids it could’ve been a terrifying moment, but to me it was an everyday treat just like how my friends got an ice-cream right after they returned from school. Amazing times I tell you.
Shrestha By: Shreyas nd Place : Thaila
I had pretty much learnt to drive properly on my own by my early teens. But since I was still underage to be out on public roads, I would just wander around our driveway which was good enough and safer. I used to come home from school and immediately rush towards driving the car around the house after my meals. Yes that was my toy and thankfully I didn’t need to attend driving schools for that. Thinking about that today still makes me feel extremely grateful towards my parents who never discouraged me to have a go at the wheels. Learning how to drive early on helped me get from various point A’s to point B’s not only in Nepal but in Canada and Thailand where I am currently studying and yes driving. Definitely Thailand is also an awesome place to drive with the wide-open highways and the best part is that there is no speed limit here. Now that’s a blessing for an adrenaline junkie like me and thankfully my license from back home works here too. Remember the first time you used a gel pen and felt it glide over the paper. That’s exactly how you feel when you drive here. Driving in Nepal is more like using that lead pencil, which keeps breaking at every other line. But Nepal is sure responsible for making me that driver with the confidence to simply take on just any kind of roads and traffic situation. Driving in Canada and Thailand is almost similar, except the downside of Canada is that there were just too many rules to follow which was irritating at times. Currently I live in Hua Hin in Thailand and frequently drive to Bangkok through this almost 200km highway which takes me around an hour and half to make the trip. Now isn’t that crazy? Do the math and you won’t agree more. Yes driving life is bloody fast down here! Still I have managed some crazy driving in Nepal too and people who know me will swear by it. I used to race around with friends. We did crazy driving all around Kathmandu valley and to Pokhara too occasionally. The fascination for cars and driving fast has always been very strong in me and I don’t think it will ever go away. But driving like that IS DANGEROUS IN NEPAL. I have got into accidents myself, but I am lucky to have lived to tell the tale. So drive safe. Unlike here, in Nepal even if you are confident enough you could get into trouble with the over confidence of other road users. Especially young drivers please drive slower and never go beyond your controlling ability. Nobody is a born Michael Schumacher. It comes with experience. So use your head and be careful. But if you want to really drive fast in safer conditions, then come down to Thailand and ring me up! J

Dear Autolife Team, ZIMBLY AMMMMAZING! I would like to congratulate Autolife for being Nepal’s first premium English auto magazine. Just picked up and went through it. The closing year 2011 issue (NovDec) of Autolife must be your insightful ever. More than the issue itself it was the vehicle buyer’s and users’ guide that I really liked. I had already gone through the tips in different heads of other magazines and so I wasn’t expecting anything different from you guys either. I was royally wrong. Car maintenance tips, way of presenting road trip, detailing car in the test drive are outstanding. What I liked the most was the simple yet informative way you had presented the information. You have given ample display of products (by the way Pictorial), which makes your magazine eye catching and lovely to read. There wasn’t any technical overload that tends to some serious page skimming. Please try to cover utility vehicles story in future, which has good percentage of market share in Nepal’s auto industry. I am not a petrolhead or dieselhead but I love my vehicle. Please keep it up. This issue was Zimbly Ammmmmmmmmmmmmmazing. Thanks and Regards Anup K.Baral, CEO

Stunt Show in Nepal Planet Nepal in association with the Pako New Road Club had organized a stunt show with two Indian professional stunters at the Satdobato Swimming Complex on the 3rd of December, 2011. The stunt show was also complimented with a live band performance by Albatross. Team Fenix, a Nepali motorcycle stunt group kicked off the show. The major attraction of the event was the stunt show put up by MTV Stuntmania 3 winner Trilochan Singh and Mandeep Singh. Both of them performed almost every stunt from the drifts, burnouts, and stoppies to the wheelies, all in different and amazing variations. The most impressive stunts were in the wheelie category with display of various wheelies like the No-hander, high chair, 12’o Clock, Circles, Flamingo, etc. The stunters had amazing control of the bikes. But they could have put up a much better show had they brought in their own customized stunting motorcycle rather than using the stock bikes available here. Anyways it was a delightful experience seeing them display their ultimate stunting skills. These guys definitely deserve a huge round of applause for their showmanship but the event management and promotion could have been a lot better. For instance even we from the media were not granted free access to cover the event which was pretty disappointing.

Team owner Gerard Lopez said, “Kimi’s decision to come back to Formula 1 with us is the first step of several announcements which should turn us into an even more serious contender in the future. Of course, we are all looking forward to working with a world champion. THE
INDESTRUCTIBLE First introduced in Japan back in 1967, the legendary Toyota Hilux is today available in its seventh generation update and still enjoys a dominant presence in the global pick-up vehicle market. Renowned for its quality, durability and outstanding reliability, the unstoppable Hilux continues to set new endurance records and conquer the most hostile environments throughout the world. The pickup truck has a worldwide reputation for ruggedness and can be found in virtually every corner of the world. It is sold in 164 different markets worldwide and with more than 12 million sales to date; it ranks as Toyota’s second best-selling model behind the Corolla. The 2011 Toyota Hilux has been given a facelift and an update under the hood. We take a look at what’s new and give our verdict on the update.

EXTERIORS
EXTERIOR STYLING The new exterior design gives the 2011 Hilux a distinctive and recognisable presence, whilst maintaining the legendary toughness. The flowing lines of a new bonnet design extend into a new, more sophisticated, reverse trapezoid-shaped radiator grille. The grille is flanked by powerful headlamp clusters which project beyond the bodywork extremities to enhance turn signal visibility. A new front bumper design incorporates a large air intake flanked by integrated fog lamp housing. The vehicle profile is further enhanced by the robust 15 steel wheel designs, and new door mirrors featuring integrated turn signals. To the rear, new combination lamp clusters and a new high level stop lamp match the projecting design of the headlamps. The new front and rear wing design do make the Hilux look a lot more modern and better than the previous model.
“The flowing lines of a new bonnet design extend into a new, more sophisticated, reverse trapezoid-shaped radiator grille
INTERIORS The new Hilux features a refined interior quality with improved levels of standard equipment. But it’s still not the best interior in the sector for style and doesn’t feel quite up-market. Its cabin is dominated by dreary grey plastics, and everything feels reassuringly solid and hardwearing. Compared with the current crop of sci-fi movie inspired dashboards, the one on the Hilux definitely feels agricultural. The centre cluster is clearly divided into two sections. The upper part incorporates the MP3/CD/USB/RADIO stereo unit and the lower part houses the air-conditioning controls. The driver’s instrument cluster has been redesigned to enhance meter clarity. The cabin is roomier than before and offers easier access with wider opening doors. There are plenty of storage areas for bottles and other items. Sit in the back of the Hilux and you’ll realise it actually has lots of legroom and given the box-shaped cabin, there is plenty of space for four adults to fit comfortably.

DRIVING IMPRESSION
UNDER THE HOOD The engines remain the same in the 2011 Hilux, but have been tweaked for fuel efficiency and to be less polluting resulting in a slight power increase. The 2011 Hilux 2.5 models now benefits from a 24 bhp increase in power. The improved 2494 cc, 16-valve, DOHC four-cylinder common-rail unit now develops 144 bhp at 3600 rpm and 343 Nm of torque at 2000 rpm. This power increase has been achieved through the adoption of a DC motor-actuated, variable nozzle vane-type turbocharger and the use of new injectors. The new injectors offer more precise fuel injection, improving throttle response and performance. The Hilux now claims to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 14.1 seconds, and has a top speed of roughly 170 km/h. The Hilux DLX 2011 range will be available in Double Cab body style, with a choice of 2WD 2.5 D-4D or 4WD 2.5 D-4D powertrains both mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Standard equipment includes power front windows, electricallyadjustable and heated door mirrors, air conditioning, power steering, ABS, front airbags, tilt-adjustable steering wheel, a rear differential lock, CD/MP3 player, velour upholstery and 15-inch alloy wheels. It will be available in a range of 8 exterior body colours.
To begin our Toyota Hilux review, we set out to first test drive the updated Hilux in the city before driving out to a couple of four-wheel routes around the valley. Drivers switching to the Hilux from a conventional car could probably be surprised with the apparent lack of power with the intercooled diesel engine providing just reasonable on-road urge. The 4-cylinder’s power output of just 144bhp is simply not in keeping with what other manufacturers are offering these days, when up to 160bhp is quite normal. Initially it delivers a lacklustre performance and acceleration is leisurely. With stingy efforts on the accelerator pedal the engine feels like its struggling. But pedal to the metal and it will sit up quickly enough to get you out and around. The engine is relatively quiet for a pick-up truck and is pleasant to drive. The Hilux behaves well and power delivery is smooth and consistent once you get the hang of it. The good forward visibility also makes it easy to manoeuvre in traffic and tight spots. Its huge road presence makes sure you don’t get easily dominated by the irrational public transports. The seats provide ample adjustment for getting set at the wheel but on the downside, some drivers could find it difficult to be comfortable with no seat height adjustment. The steering wheel though can be moved up and down. When parking, it feels heavy and tricky because the rear deck is both very long and almost impossible to see from the driver’s seat. Parking sensors would have been appreciated. Braking performance is as you’d expect and pedal feel in normal driving is good. Get off the road and you begin to realize the happiness with which the Toyota treads foot on the dirt. On gravel, it

It is well protected underneath, and has steep approach and departure angles for stepping over boulders and across ruts. The seats are comfortable and provide enough grip and support when lurching about off-road. The firm suspension gives the Hilux decent body control when tackling corners, but unfortunately the trade-off for its composure is the ride comfort. The Toyota tends to thump over potholes and bumps shaking the occupants in their seats. Up front the 2011 Hilux comes with the well-proven double-wishbone coil-spring front suspension with twintube dampers and a ball-joint mounted stabiliser bar, and naturally a leaf-sprung rear for durability and to allow for heavy loads to be carried. Usefully, the shift from two- to normal four-wheel drive and back to two-wheel drive can be performed easily whilst on the move. The Toyota Hilux pickup truck also has a rear differential lock which is a ‘must’ for those venturing off-road; because four-wheel drive is no good if you lose traction through the rear wheels. The differential lock senses the loss of
“The Hilux steers, rides, brakes with confidence and is equally capable off road” traction in any of the rear wheels and transmits power to the wheels with the grip. The torque output of 343 Nm available from 1600rpm is acceptable, with the Toyota pulling well along steep uphill slopes too and driving with flexibility at low speeds. The Hilux steers, rides, brakes with confidence and is equally capable off road. Although the majority of Toyota Hilux 4x4’s sold to private buyers will probably never see extreme dirt condition, its ability to perform off-road was crucial to determine its 4x4 potential.
OUR VERDICT Overall, the Toyota Hilux pickup truck has a likeable conservative styling; it’s pleasant to drive and scores with its good interior passenger space and large load area. It’s a pick-up that you can show off to your friends after pimping it with the proper accessories, can serve its purpose as the holiday car fearlessly taking you just anywhere and finally should keep the family happy with the massive space to effortlessly bring home those uncountable shopping sprees. It feels like a car that is built to last. The Hilux is undoubtedly a good pick-up. Over the years, the Hilux has earned a reputation being one of the most reliable vehicles on the road, and this version too should prove the same. AL

aunched back in 2008, the Yamaha YZF-R15 is undoubtedly the first Indian bike to be designed in the true super sport image. It not only looked like a mini sports bike but also equally performed like one. In spite of its impressive power delivery and amazing handling characteristics, many were left disappointed with the design of its rear section in the first version. Yamaha India finally decided to upgrade its flagship product after much popular demand and feedback from various discussion forums and its customers. Now the R15 version 2.0, with the totally revamped rear section and mid section along with some engine and chassis tweaks, claims to have drastically improved on what its predecessor lacked, maintaining every bit of its much acclaimed ride quality. 30

LOOKS & DESIGN
At first glance from the front, the new R15 isn’t very different to look at. But move towards the rear and you begin to realize the extensive changes that have been made. There is a darker visor up front, new engine fairing design with improved aerodynamic efficiency, mock carbon fibre plastics in the mid section, upsized radial tyres on new alloys at the front and rear, upgraded discs, longer aluminium swingarm, restyled exhaust, and yes a totally new tail section. The sharp R6 inspired tail piece with the split seats, angular LED tail-light and the 130 section rear tyre below easily steals the show here and could pretty much seal the deal for most of those R15 enthusiasts who wished for a better rear in the R15 V1. As with most sports focused bikes, the pillion is surely in for a hard time on the V2. That the new rear seat set-up is high is testified by the fact that five and half footer like me couldn’t avoid hitting the tail while swinging my leg over to the saddle. Using the rear foot peg to get aboard should be a good solution and make sure the rider has his feet well balanced to bear the weight transfer. The new tyre hugger adds to the purposefulness of keeping you and the bike from getting dirty in the monsoons but is an eye sore on such a sports styled motorcycle. I bet that most of the new owners will definitely be chopping off the rear tyre hugger and boy doesn’t it then look more killer from the rear angle (Have already seen many do that on the new R15’s

on the streets). The digital instrumental cockpit along with the switchgears has been retained from the earlier version. The overall plastic quality is as good as it was with V1 and feels robust enough to last.
ENGINE & CHASSIS
The motor remains unchanged. It has got the same 149.8cc liquid-cooled engine with maximum power output of 16.8bhp at 8500 rpm and maximum torque of 15nm at 7500 rpm. However, the ECU mapping has been tweaked for better response and along with a more rigid clutch axle shaft and a better throttle pulley, Yamaha claims that there will be a decided difference the way the bike pulls from stand-still and while in motion. A revised final drive ratio leading to a taller gearing rounds up the list of changes in the engine. The new R15’s wheelbase has been stretched by 55mm with a new aluminium swingarm, a first in this class. Wrapped around a stylish 10-spoke alloy wheel is a 130/70 x 17-inch radial tyre at the rear, while the front also gets meatier 90/80 x 17-inch rubber. To improve braking efficiency at both ends, the front disc has a bigger carrier to increase cooling, while the rear disc has been upgraded to 220mm. Yamaha has sadly failed to add power to the new model, but the good part is that the R15 is still one of the most powerful Indian motorcycles you can buy in the market.
The V2.0 is clearly more responsive, with a healthier punch in the bottom and mid-range of its powerband.
RIDE QUALITY
Swing a leg over the YZF-R15 V2.0, and you immediately realize the more aggressive riding position with its forward-set stance from the increased rear set up. It’s a perfect setting for cruising down the road and charging through the corners getting that sportsbike feel. When riding in traffic jams, bikers will have to move closer to the tank and escape the sporty position to avoid that tiring feel in the wrist and at the back. Start the motor, slot into first gear and previous R15 riders can make out the improved power delivery. Unlike earlier R15’s that had to be wound up to really get going, the V2.0 is clearly more responsive, with a healthier punch in the bottom and mid-range of its powerband. The off-theline acceleration feels somewhat better compared to V1. The clutch felt lighter and gearshifts were butter smooth as ever with the six-speed box shifting positively. 32

The sportier riding position provides a connected and direct feel with the motorcycle that amazingly handles like a dream
The engine sounds the same; solid, throaty and vibration free. The horn honked louder and better, which is quite a necessity for our roads. I did not have the opportunity to measure the fuel efficiency of the bike and Yamaha claims that fuel efficiency remains unchanged. However, mileage should be the last thing on your mind when aboard a performance motorcycle.
DYNAMICS AND HANDLING
On the dynamics front, the bigger tyres and longer aluminium swingarm significantly improve the stability of the new R15. The revised MRF tyres provide solid grip when leaned over or under hard braking. The bite from both the disk brake is hard to fault, and still powerful enough to bring the bike to a screeching halt with a more effective rear disk. I have had the opportunity to race the Yamaha R15 down an international standard race track down at Chennai in the past and after a few runs astride the R15 V2.0 down a couple of winding roads, it was pretty clear that Yamaha has also managed to improve on the R15’s core strength of handling. Yamaha’s Deltabox frame is still instrumental for its rock-solid poise around corners along with the all-new swingarm. The R15 V2.0 feels more forgiving, planted and encourages you to ride harder and faster. The sportier riding position provides a connected and direct feel with the motorcycle that amazingly handles like a dream. While the difference may not be startling for some, Yamaha has managed to improve the R15 discernibly in every area. So the R15 is easier to ride faster around corners, it is better when powering out of corners and much more stable down the straights and off the road. In addition, the bike has lost some of the flickability of the earlier motorcycle, as there is a certain heavy feel to the new bike.
FINAL VERDICT
Leaned over mid-corner, the engine screaming out in the high revs and the tyres fiercely gripping the tarmac, this new Yamaha R15 is a treat for aspiring sportsbike riders. Confident handling, improved power delivery as well as incredible stability make the V2.0 a significantly better motorcycle to ride. The new Yamaha R15 also gives most bikers what they want with the cosmetic makeover. But the R15’s brilliant chassis truly could afford for more power to match its perfectly sorted dynamics and this is a sort of disappointment for enthusiasts like me who were expecting a substantial increase in performance too. Thankfully, the updated YZF-R15 still remains the ultimate 150cc sportsbike. AL

AUSTRIA Coverage by: Ankit Shakya Wouldn’t you love to get away from all your troubles and obligations? To have no regrets about the past and not a worry about what obstacles the future holds for you? Wouldn’t it be great if you could pack your bags, get on your bike and just ride into the horizon? Sadly, not all of us get to do what we want, whatever the reasons may be. But there are a few people out there who just can’t help themselves. They are people who believe that the only path to happiness lies in pursuing the thumps that beat out from your chest. These people crave adventure. Big Tom and Harry are amongst this niche group. They show enough courage to pursue their passion of travelling the world. Moreover, they do it in style, on their beautiful BMW R1200 GS. A motorcycle made specifically for touring purposes perfectly fits Tom and Harry who have been touring anywhere and everywhere they can on the face of the globe. On their venture of travelling the world, Tom and Harry made a pit stop in our very own Kathmandu and we felt that it was our duty to let you know about them and their journey from halfway across the world.

Tom & HArry in NEPA L The Riders Big Tom is… well big, and Harry… well he is pretty big too. Tom is a jolly fellow who will widen you r smile to compete with the one on his own face. And , Harry will take his mammoth hands and give you a frien dly handshake complimentary with his own heart warm ing smile. Nonetheless, I would strictly advise any one from getting on their nerves; they can easily snap you like a twig. More importantly, Big Tom and Harry are serious bikers. And I mean quit-your-job, sell-your-stuff-to -travel-theworld serious. After working as a General Manager for a software company in Austria, Tom quit his job, gathered up his 10 years’ worth of savings and decided to cash it in to travel the world on his trusty steed. Harr y too quit his job at a German water pump company, sold his car, pulled a few financial strings and set off to travel the world. On 7th August 2010, Harry kicked off from Vienna, Austria riding to Slovenia then Croatia to Montene gro to Bosnia Herzegovina followed by Albania to Mac edonia to Greece and then Turkey where he planned to go to South Africa but was stopped at the Syrian border due to political turmoil there. Undeterred, he continued to Iran then Pakistan, making his way into India and finally to Nepal. Current distance travelled: 18000 kms Tom’s list is even more impressive. The Bike and Gear Both riders depend on their BMW R1200GS Adventure to take them around the wo rld. Unlike our normal m otorbikes with a chain drive and wet clutch, the BMWs sp or t a wet clutch with a shaft drive. Since th ey have to travel the world on their bikes, they have their trust y GPS (GPI) navigator on their bikes. Tom and Harry know their bikes inside ou t, literally. With the aid of a mechani cally well-versed frien d at BMW, the internet and their tru sty manual, Tom and Ha rry perform all the required servicing themselves, and they have their work cut out for them. The gearbox oil needs to be changed every 40000 kms and the engine holds a whoo ping 4 litres of motor oil which needs to be changed every 1000 0 kms with a 0.3 litre top up every 40 00 kms. In addition, the engine valves had to be balanced ev ery 10000 kms. Spills and Thrills/ Twists and Turns On a trip of such epic proportions, a few spills are inevitable, and obstacles are to be expected. First off, Harry planned on going to South Africa. But, he was halted at the Syrian border due to political instability within the country. Later, while making his way to Pakistan he encountered more problems. He came to learn that in order to get a visa to Pakistan you need to get it from your home country, and since he was unexpectedly diverted to Pakistan from his planned route to South Africa, he was not prepared. So, he had to fly back to Austria, get his visa approved and return to Pakistan. He was also faced with a few camera and GPI navigation problems. Harry met with a memorable fall in Turkey. On an off road terrain, he met with an accident, not a major one though. Since the bike and Harry together weighed up to 480 kgs, a number of helping hands were required to get his bike back on a vertical basis. However, Tom met with a more serious mishap. On a patch of the Karokum Highway in Pakistan, a massive landslide created very unfavourable terrain. This led to Tom’s accident causing him a torn ACL ligament. With the next hospital in Delhi, Big Tom had to fight through the excruciating pain and ride his bike to Delhi where he was attended to at a hospital. Talk about balls of steel. www.autolife.com.np
Their Say “Don’t trust mass media, make up your own mind” - Big Tom “I’m a guy who believes what I see with my eyes. pparently, December 21st, 2012 is the predicted doomsday for planet Earth according to a widely held belief based on Mayan prophecies. Seriously, neither you nor us have any idea what is fact or what is fiction behind this predication. Maybe after having watched the Hollywood blockbuster movie ‘2012’, most of us have started to fall for that doomsday crap. Nevertheless, we still have a whole year to look forward to and don’t see any reason to be prepared for the end of the world. Even our auto industry looks hell bent to speed our way through 2012 with numerous fantastic automobile launches lined up for the coming year. EXTERIOR STYLING
Yes we know very well that Tata has been mentioning the Tata Aria as a crossover. But at the end of the day it still is a MPV segment wise. The Aria is sure one the best looking products from Tata. Thanks to the futuristic front end and her dimensions, the Aria does have a phenomenal presence. The double barrel headlights with the low-beam being a projector type on the large sized headlamps makes for a stunning design, all complete with the chrome finished front grille and huge front bumper flanked by round front fog lamps on both sides. When viewed from the side too, the huge beefy looking Aria with those big seventeen inch wheels and flared wheel arches creates an imposing stance. The side views mirrors have integrated turn indicators and can be electronically adjusted and folded away. But we felt that the futuristic front doesn’t gel with the bland rear which has a rather boxy feel. The twin chrome exhaust tip though adds character. However, there is no doubt that the design is at least proportionate. It has immense presence when viewed from certain angles. Overall fit and finish and paint quality of Tata Aria is also top notch.

INTERIOR FEATURES & CABIN FEEL When it’s about the interiors, the Tata Aria promises to display the next level of refinement from Tata. Anybody should be shocked to witness the not-so-Tata cabin feel inside. The nicely styled dashboard in the black and plum colour combo on our test car made evident Tata’s Range Rover influence. There’s a clear and concise instrument cluster with a MID (Mini Info Display) that shows information like two trip meters, distance to empty and fuel efficiency. The centre console houses the entertainment, rear view cam and navigation display that you need and USB / Aux connectors are placed in a tiny cubicle below the climate control. The climate control system is efficient and manages to chill the huge cabin in a small amount of time with total of 10 air ducts. High interior quality is apparent and simply puts the Aria years ahead of other Tata cars. The Aria has so many storage compartments that you will run out of things to keep in them! The dashboard is home to two glove boxes, of which the upper one is cooled. Yes that literally means chilled beer on the move for most of you. But we recommend you stick to Coke as long as you are the one driving. The main lower box is though unexpectedly so small that even the owner’s manual didn’t fit in. Amazingly there are also 7 overhead storage bins mounted on the roof for the passengers to stash away small stuffs. The door pockets too are deep & wide enough to easily hold 1 litre bottles. Only a centre glove box between the front seats is absent. The lord help you should you forget where you stashed that odd item. 48

“High interior quality is apparent and simply puts the Aria years ahead of other Tata cars” The driver’s seat has a decent range of options to get set at the wheels with lumbar, recline and height adjustment and collapsible arm-rests to rest your arm. The steering is tilt adjustable and good to hold with integrated audio and phone controls. But controls on steering wheels get accidentally pressed while driving and another button should have been provided to disable them. The driver’s foot well is also a bit narrow and lacks a dead pedal which is inacceptable for long-distance cruising. Doors auto-lock once you start driving and all 4 power window are one-touch push down, but is lacking one-touch up. The power window disable button though is a well thought of addition. Tata Aria has a comfortable seating capacity for seven passengers. So the Aria is pretty wide on the inside. The front and middle row seats offer outstanding comfort. Occupants have access to generous legroom and headroom with adjustable seatbacks which can be moved fore & aft. But things aren’t as bright for huge third row passengers. The third row is a bit cramped in terms of space and is best for children or short adults only. At least a seat sliding option should have been provided to the 3rd row too for versatility. The last two rows of seating can also be folded just in case you decide to move your home along in the Aria. www.autolife.com.np
You can also easily switch the AWD mechanism off via a button on the dashboard to maximise fuel efficiency
DRIVE QUALITY The engine is the same 2.2 litre DICOR diesel unit from the Safari generating maximum power of 140 bhp (4000 rpm) with maximum torque of 320 Nm (1700 – 2700 rpm). The engine is refined and performs well except for a bit of turbo lag, which is easily dismissed with a downshift. Its driveability is acceptable even at low speeds, making it easy to drive around and the punchy mid-range makes overtaking effortless. The clutch is light and the gearshift is a nice short throw but isn’t exactly what one would call sleak. The Aria wears an independent double wishbone suspension at the front and a 5 link coil spring at the rear and absorbs sharp bumps well enough to keep nasty jolts out of the cabin. Behaviour & handling at speed is also good enough with the on-demand all-wheel drive system maintaining solid grip especially when taking the turns at higher speeds. The ADAPTERRA Torque on demand four wheel drive system along with the overall ground clearance of 200mm, should provide enough off-roading capability but don’t expect to go hardcore with the Aria as on a SUV. You can also easily switch the AWD mechanism off via a button on the dashboard to maximise fuel efficiency. The large front & rear disc brakes go about their work just as intended and in emergency situations though, the ESP + Traction Control + ABS + EBD should help keep matters in control. The high-perched driving position gives a commanding view of the road ahead. Even the rearward view was pretty good for an MPV with the help of the reverse cam but it will take some time getting used to. Rain sensors are another notable feature. The wiper speed gets adjusted and activated depending on rain or water intensity on the windscreen. While the rear door wiper runs automatically when in reverse gear. Top of the line variant also gets auto lighting which means it can adjust light intensity on its own depending on darkness outside. Lastly if you end up crashing, the Aria will automatically unlock all doors, and switch on the hazard lights as well as the in-cabin roof lamp for safety purposes. We though didn’t check for ourselves if it really worked. At the end of the day the on board computer of the Aria showed a fuel average of 11.5kmpl.

FINAL SAY So there’s a lot to like about the Tata Aria. The design is sophisticated, the cabin is very comfortable, interior styling is luxurious, ride quality is good and performance is better than average. The Aria’s potential customers are sure mainly the urban family consisting of husband, wife, parents and a bunch of kids wanting to travel together. But the Aria loaded to the gill with bells & whistles provides an overall luxurious experience comparable to upmarket cars and could tick the checklist even for single folks out there looking forward to make a lifestyle statement. This is surely Tata’s most expensive passenger vehicle till date but unfailingly also delivers on an all round premium experience. AL

The Daredevil
‘I
am a lucky, lucky person’... With a Guinness Book of World Records entry of having fractured 433 bones during his entire career and still having survived to tell the tale, nobody else could have rightly justified that statement other than Evel Knievel. Born as Robert Craig Knievel in the town of Butte, Montana on October 17, 1938, he was a popular American motorcycle daredevil and a famed entertainer in the United States and elsewhere between the late 1960s and early 1980s. Dressed and clad in his signature red, white and blue jumpsuit, Knievel would race his motorcycle up steep ramps and over obstacles; the result of which he often crash-landed, thrilling viewers while breaking dozens of bones. His achievements and failures, earned him several entries in the record books and made him a household name and a reputed daredevil. As a kid, Knievel loved showing off to the other neighbourhood kids by jumping his bicycle and always came home with cuts and bruises. It was at the age of eight after attending a Joie Chitwood Auto Daredevil Show he was later inspired to opt for a career choice to become a motorcycle daredevil. At 13, he got his first motorcycle, and crashed it into a neighbour’s garage, nearly catching the garage on fire when the bike’s gas tank ruptured. After high school, he worked in the copper mines where he drove a large earth mover. But Knievel was soon dismissed when he made the earth mover do a motorcycle-type wheelie and drove it into the town’s main power line. Then Knievel began to find himself in more and more trouble and had earned himself a mischievous reputation. With his frequent visits at the local jail, the jail inspector referred to him as Evil Knievel (‘Evil’ rhyming with ‘Knievel’). But he chose the misspelling ‘Evel’ because he didn’t want to be considered ‘evil’ and tagged the nickname to his name. From the early 1950’s till the 1960’s he spent his life racing stock cars and motorcycles, riding horses in the rodeo, represented the United States Army track team as a pole vaulter and even played minor pro hockey. To support his family financially he switched careers and opened up a Honda motorcycle dealership at Moses Lake and promoted
motocross racing. Despite his best efforts the store eventually closed. Evel then went to work at a motorcycle shop in Sunnyside, Washington. It was here where Jim Pomeroy, a well known motocross racer taught Knievel how to do a “wheelie” and ride while standing on the seat of the bike. Without a way to support his family, Knievel recalled the Joie Chitwood show he saw as a boy and decided that he could do something similar using a motorcycle. Promoting the show himself, Knievel rented the venue, wrote the press releases, set up the show, sold the tickets and served as his own master of ceremonies. After enticing the small crowd with a few wheelies, for the first time he proceeded to jump a twenty-foot-long box of rattlesnakes and two mountain lions. Despite landing short, Knievel managed to land safely. With limited money, he then found a sponsor in Bob Blair, a distributor for Norton Motorcycles for his daredevil show. Blair offered to provide the needed motorcycles and the show was named Evel Knievel and His Motorcycle Daredevils. The show debuted on January 3, 1966, at the National Date Festival in Indio, California and was a huge success. At the next performance Knievel attempted a new stunt where he jumped and spread eagle over his speeding motorcycle in midair. Unfortunately Knievel jumped too late and the motorcycle hit him in the groin, tossing him fifteen feet in air. It was his first crash. After recovering, Knievel started travelling from small town to small town as a solo act.
He chose the misspelling ‘Evel’ because he didn’t want to be considered ‘evil’. 52

Then on June 19, 1966, the unexpected happened again in Montana, when he attempted to jump twelve cars and a cargo van. Knievel ended up with a severely broken arm and several broken ribs. Later on May 30, 1967, Knievel successfully cleared sixteen cars in Gardena, California. After regularly performing and occasionally crashing, he finally received some national exposure and to add to his publicity stint, Knievel jumped the fountains at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas on December 31, 1967. But when he hit the takeoff ramp at Caesar’s Palace, the motorcycle unexpectedly decelerated and caused a landing malfunction and he tumbled over onto the pavement. As a result of the crash, Knievel suffered a crushed pelvis and femur, fractures to his hip, wrist and both ankles and a concussion that kept him in a coma for 29 days. After his crash and recovery Knievel was more famous than ever. Just five months after his near fatal crash, Knievel surprisingly performed another jump on May 25, 1968, in Arizona, and again crashed while attempting to jump fifteen Mustangs. Knievel ended up breaking his right leg and foot as a result of the crash. Knievel started making more money than ever before, earning approximately $25,000 per performance, and was making successful jumps. Knievel then decided to do a motorcycle jump across the Grand Canyon but the United States government did not allow him to do the jump. So to keep his fans interested he instead chose Snake River Canyon near Twin Falls, Idaho, that was both wide enough, deep enough and on private property. On February 28, 1971, he then set a new world record by jumping 19 cars with his Harley Davidson XR750cc in Ontario, California and held the record for 27 years. Finally the jump at Snake River Canyon took place on September 8, 1974. But the attempt failed when the prematurely deployed chute caused enough drag to drift him back into the canyon though he had made it across and Knievel luckily survived the jump with only minor injuries. Then on May 26, 1975, in front of 90,000 people at Wembley Stadium in London, Knievel again crashed while trying to land a jump over thirteen redundant singledeck AEC Merlin buses. After the crash, despite breaking his pelvis, Knievel announced his retirement. But after recuperating, Knievel realized that he had spoken too soon, and decided that he would continue jumping. On October 25, 1975, Knievel successfully jumped fourteen Greyhound buses at Kings Island, Ohio. This event scored the highest viewer ratings in the history of ABC’s Wide World of Sports. Knievel made only a few daredevil appearances after that, jumping for the last time in March 1981 in Hollywood, Florida. He then retired and his son Robbie Knievel succeeded him as the family motorcycle daredevil. Later in the decade, the merchandising of the Knievel image reached additional Medias and Knievel made several

television appearances. In 1993, Evel Knievel was diagnosed with hepatitis C, apparently contracted during one of his many reconstructive surgeries and needed a liver transplant in 1999. The same year Knievel was also finally inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. In 2005, he was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease that required him to be on supplemental oxygen 24 hours a day. With a declining state of health each passing day, Evel eventually passed away in Clearwater, Florida on November 30, 2007, aged 69. Knievel was buried at Mountain View Cemetery in his hometown of Butte, Montana on December 10, 2007 following a funeral at the 7,500-seat Butte Civic Center. His popularity, especially with young boys, was rampant. He became a hero to a generation of young boys, many of whom were injured trying to imitate his stunts. For years he cheated death, sometimes spectacularly so and the numerous crashes cemented his legend. Men admired him. Their sons wanted to be like him. Women just wanted him. In one of his last interviews when asked why he performed those daredevil acts inspite of the risk of injuries he replied, “You can’t ask a guy like me why I performed. I really wanted to fly through the air. I was a daredevil, a performer. I loved the thrill, the money, the whole macho thing. All those things made me Evel Knievel. Sure, I was scared. You gotta be an asshole not to be scared. But I beat the hell out of death. God never made a tougher son of a bitch than me.” AL

DEMAK DMX-R DUAL-PURPOSE RIDER
ff road motorcycles are a craze here in Nepal, probably because it is the perfect solution for the varying terrain our country has on offer. Many dirt bikes have entered the motorcycling scene in all these years but till today not even one has been able to successfully dethrone the legacy and reliability of the decades old Honda XL series. People still end up buying the rugged preowned Honda XL, XR’s and XLR’s in their quest for the perfect and true blue off roader. So does the Demak DMX-R, the latest off roader in the market, possess all those qualities that can overpower the rusty old Honda’s? I am afraid not. However, it has a different story to tell. Agni Incorporated Pvt. Ltd had launched the Demak DMX-R back in April 2011 and since then has already sold about forty of these off roaders, which is pretty good for a newly established brand. The Demak DMX-R is very classy and charismatic in its first look. A stylish front headlamp is gracefully placed over the towering front mud guards. The elongated handle bar with hand guards is elegantly placed for a comfy riding position. But the Demak DMX-R has a very outdated analog instrument panel and houses a speedometer, odometer, tripmeter, turn indicator and headlight signals, etc. Sadly, a much needed tachometer is missing. The DMX-R is incorporated with an advanced inverted telescopic suspension ahead and has a two way adjustable mono shock at the rear. The 2.75 inch front tyre is housed in a 21 inch spoke rim and the

4.10 inch rear is held in an 18 inch spoke rim. Sturdy disk brakes back and front completes the braking system. The rear section of the DMX-R is also impressive and with well placed tail lights and sporty exhaust pipes looks appealing. With the petal disc brakes front and back, huge hand protectors, inverted front forks, sharp body cuts and adjustable monoshock at rear, the DMX-R does tick all the right boxes design wise. The DMX looks tall and solid. Plastics and paint quality too looks and feels good, but you can still feel the usual china quality here and there in the chassis. Powering the Demak DMX-R is a 150cc single cylinder engine. The 4-stroke engine comes with SOHC valve configuration for clear emissions and is bestowed with Air Cooled technology. A regular 5-Speed transmission does the job of managing the 13bhp of power and 10nm of torque. The DMX-R can hold 12 litres of fuel with 1 litre for fuel reserve. Surprisingly, the fuel cap does not have a lock in feature and comes with screw in and out characteristics. Since the cap can be easily opened up like how you open up a water bottle cap, chances are high that DMX-R owners will have their fuel stolen occasionally in isolated areas. The bike is expected to deliver a fuel efficiency of around 35 kmpl.
It looks like a proper off roader with the right looks to garner enough attention on the roads
When I first saw the Demak DMX-R, it looked like a proper off roader with the right looks to garner enough attention on the roads. But, as I set out to test ride the bike, immediately my confidence and appreciation went down. The DMX-R needed to be revved harder to have the bike leaping forward like a true blue dirt bike. Ofcourse, the bike is just a 150cc, but there’s always a certain amount of powerful torque that one looks forward to when aboard a dirt bike. Later though, the performance did improve slightly after I had the clutch cable adjusted properly. In addition, the gear lever seemed put too high from the foot peg and the handlebar brake and clutch lever weren’t placed at

the right angle. Thankfully these problems are actually adjustable at the service centre and I hope the showroom lays more emphasis on proper pre delivery inspection if they are really serious about selling the DMX-R in good numbers. Minor matters like these could actually be a major let down for potential customers. The engine is smooth enough and fun to ride on the road. In heavy traffic conditions, the bike was agile and easy to handle with the pretty good suspensions. The seat height was comfortable enough for five and half footer like me and provided a towering view over the vehicles on the road. However, the bike is less on the top end and one can feel the vibrations creeping in at higher speeds down the highway. The dual disk braking system ensures instant braking in the event of unexpected surprises and the sound suspension present in the bike offers a relatively jerk free exhilarating

riding experience even in the twisty and bumpy roads. When taken off road, the bike was quite solid while going over the curbs with its long front fork travels and massive ground clearance of 260mm. The broad tyres ensured proper control and minimized the rate of skidding. It was comfortable bashing through the bushes. Sadly, the Demak DMX-R does not offer the expected zippy acceleration and pick up. The power is enough on the road but not the same on the dirt road. It feels a little sluggish on hill climbs though does the job of tackling mid size hills and soft terrain at its own pace. Off road, the bike feels like the kind with more style and appealing design but a down side on the motor performance. This bike might have sure won dirt bike races in Malaysia, but those bikes were actually well tuned by race engineers for those kinds of events. Only if that level of tuning was available on the production bikes too. The gearbox needs some level of refinement and the engine needs to be retuned for more off road capabilities. Tweaking here and there could make this bike a proper off roader from a soft roader. So, is the bike worth to be considered? Yes, given its massive price advantage over its competititors, the Demak DMX-R is an affordable motorcycle and should make a good bike for city commuting and the occasional off road jaunts. AL

Need for Speed What we loved about NFS: The Run The Run lures players into an underground world of illicit, high-stakes racing. The heat is on – and it isn’t just the fuzz who are after you. Entering the race is just the beginning as you blow across borders, weave through dense urban traffic, rocket down icy mountain passes and navigate narrow canyons at breakneck speeds. NFS: The Run takes the action racing genre to new heights with stunning visuals and car physics that hug the road even at top speeds all built around a gripping storyline. ith congested roads everywhere, work pressure and time bound, we move on to our destination each day in our vehicles. How safe are we in such situations? Especially this is an important point to consider when we are in the roads of Nepal. So, auto insurance popularly known as Vehicle Insurance can help us during an unseen road event. Auto insurance covers both the damage of the vehicle and loss of vehicle by fire, lightning, explosion, earthquake, flood and inundation, storm & landslide, theft, etc, along with the accident of the driver and passengers. It also covers the third party liability generated due to the vehicle accidentally. In cases where all the above mentioned risk is covered, it is known as comprehensive policy. But one can choose for all the risk or any one of them as per the requirement. However, third party liability is the compulsory one. The amount of premium for vehicle insurance is tariff based and depends mainly upon the cubic capacity and the value of the vehicle. For many of us vehicle is still a luxury and a huge damage or loss of the vehicle would mean huge investment loss that will take years to recover. Especially if one buys the vehicle on loan facilities, the loss would be enormous.

ALLY THE GUMBALL R
CAR
The stars of the movie: Shelby 427 Cobra, Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona, Porsche 911 Targa, Camaro Z/28, Dodge Polara. A group of people from different backgrounds have one thing in common: when they hear the world “gumball” whispered by one of the others, they know that it’s time for the Gumball Rally: a no-holds barred, secret, winnertake-all rally across the USA. As thick-headed cop Roscoe (Norman Burton) does his best to stop the titular rally; a vast and varied contingent of contestants prepare to burn rubber from New York to California. The best looking of the racers is played by top-billed Michael Sarrazin; Franco, a delightfully narcissistic Italian road jockey played by Raul Julia, also competes in this anything goes rally. And what goes? Lapchick, the Mad Hungarian, trying to spend 36 hours non-stop on a motorcycle; a van filled with hundreds of gallons of fuel so they don’t have to delay for fuel stops; Raul Julia as the Italian race driver Franco
and his famous first rule of Italian driving. And, in that overfilmed concrete gully known as the LA River, there is the BEST sequence ever shot when a Ferrari Daytona duels with a 427 Cobra. They didn’t rely simply on trick shots and under cranked cameras, often the cars were really driven to their limits.
ASTEST THE WORLD’S F
INDIAN
BIKE
“You live more in five minutes on a bike like this going flat out than some people live in a lifetime.” On 26 August 1967, a 68 year old man set a world record. The record still stands today. 68 year old Munro who worked 20 years to modify his assembly line 1920 Indian 600cc to a 950cc ‘Munro Special’, rid upon the 47 year old motorcycle to tackle the Bonneville Salt Flats at speeds of 305.89 km/h, setting a record for an under 1000cc motorcycle that still remains to be broken. The World’s Fastest Indian is the story about the lovable rebel Burt Munro, who never gave up on his dream of doing something big, a dream that not everyone took seriously. Although he is loved by those who get to actually know him, he is a cantankerous spirit at heart, and all the criticisms he received only fueled his desires of etching his name into history at break neck speeds. You will come to adore this old man and his relentless pursuit for glory as he overcomes every obstacle in his path in high spirits and a smile on his face. A beautiful story of a man who couldn’t be held back, The World’s Fastest Indian is a great movie and worth a watch.

Every road trip is basically the same. No matter what the distance or the destination; it’s the rush of adrenaline one feels rooted in the spine that fuels the experience of a road trip. There is an unusually rhythmic continuity in the unexpected turns and bumps in a road trip. Maybe it is the feel of the road, the detachment from the routine activities or it could just be the uninterruptable concentration required to keep your vehicle safely on the road.

e were three friends. We decided to take a road trip. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? That’s the guy code. Don’t ask questions and just start driving. Believe me it’s a good recipe for a married life. We decided to take a trip to Kakani. This decision took us a vigorous 8 seconds. Our primary reason was the short distance of about 50 kms from the city, secondly, the road leading to Kakani is smooth except for just a few rough patches, thirdly, the fish we get at rani powa, a 15 minute drive from Kakani is superb and finally it is a trip you can very comfortably complete in a days time. Amongst the given aspects, the idea of completing a road trip within a day steals the show. So off we went on two Yamaha FZ-S bikes, at around mid day from Kathmandu as we are all late bloomers and the bed just wouldn’t let us go until at least and literally the 11th hour. We rode and rode, we stopped and rode. Stopping periodically was essential for us as we specifically had taking pictures on our agenda and also because we have tremendous respect for the inevitable call of nature. Our trip was short and simple. It normally takes about an hour and a half to reach Kakani but we drove slow and took a lot of breaks. Think about it. You don’t have to worry about overnight stays, your luggage is minimal, and the thought of being close to the city is always comforting. Other factors I noticed during the trip itself would be that cell reception was available all the time, there are many restaurants all the way to Kakani and also there are many restaurants all the way to Kakani (no I didn’t repeat that line by mistake, its just that I like food a lot). Lastly, I also noticed a few tyre puncture repair shops on the way (you might be thinking your tyres are tubeless huh? Well many people are still sticking to their beloved 8 year old bikes). In addition, to make things clear, there are a few hotels in Kakani if you ever plan to stay overnight. They usually charge between 1000 – 1500 rupees for the night, and the rooms are pretty decent. An overnight stay in Kakani is definitely a good idea. I bet the pollution free surrounding would help you

really enjoy your morning coffee. You would really enjoy your morning coffee (guess why I repeated that line, hints above). Riding on a road trip is completely opposite to riding in the city. Yes, you guessed it right, much less traffic (we’re not handing out gifts for correct answers). The other difference in a road trip is that your bike, if in proper condition performs excellent. The handling is better as you mostly get to maintain a certain speed. With this, your gear shifting automatically becomes smoother; you brake less and also are more careful during turns. We have many needfor-speed inspired truckers in our country too. Overall, you evolve as a better driver. Same thing happened with us. We were driving cautious and smooth. The small instances always make road trips a memory, for example, you find a puddle of water and you use your bike to unleash the festival of Holi on your friend. You find a nice waterfall backgrounded with rocks, you start climbing it and well, slipping down embarrassingly too. You could get really

tired and feel your muscles give out and a cup of hot tea from the smallest of shops can give you red-bull like wings. We rode, we played with puddles, we climbed rocks and we drank tea. This somehow felt better than any exotic travel package. Our final destination (no, not the movie) was this nice waterfall where we sat and talked about well, taking another road trip soon. It was around seven now and already dark. We decided to head back home and that’s exactly what we did. We stopped only once and were in Kathmandu by 9 pm. The best out of the many good parts of a road trip is that the mostly monotonous quality in a road trip actually feels diverse. It could be the same type of road, the same nature of surroundings, the same dudes you have to keep looking at (always deeply wishing they were attractive females), or the same sound of the wind hitting your helmet, and believe me after a while even the songs on your iPod all feel the same.

small instances always “ The make road trips a memory, for example, you find a puddle of water and you use your bike to unleash the festival of Holi on your friend
“
Despite all this, there is always a seemingly pleasant feeling while on the open roads. Why this happens is harder to answer than solving the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle or trying to figure out why we keep checking the time again and again when we know what time it is. From what I have gathered, it could basically be the connection with the road or the excitement of the final destination (still thinking about the movie?) or just thought of taking a break from the usual chaos of daily life. So, there you go, that’s the short and sweet road trip for you. It’s basically short, smooth and lots and lots of paraphyletic group of organisms that consist of all gillbearing aquatic vertebrate (or craniate) animals that lack limbs with digits. I could have just said fish but that just sounds too simple. And finally remember drive safe, live longer or maybe just eat lots of fish and at least live healthier. AL

My day at the Words & Photography : Ankit Shakya
I
’ll be the first one to admit, I had let myself go. Perhaps it was the 13 years and 125000kms under my belt, I don’t know, but I was leading on to a road that would soon make me nothing but an eye sore. Maybe that was why he had stopped looking at me the way he used to. And who would blame him? Even I wouldn’t spare myself a second glance the way I had been looking lately. Constant sun exposure had definitely done a number on my paint. The gloss that once turned heads was only a reminiscence of its once effervescent charm. Expecting to look the way I did in my yesteryears would have been absurd, but I was sick of cringing at my own reflection. In addition, with the windows rolled down during the summer, the pollution in the Nepali roads had not been kind to my interiors. In the past few months, I was feeling down in the dumps, but then one day Jazz, a friend of mine, told me about AutoSpa, and a glimmer of hope resurfaced. At this point, I was willing to try anything. So, by the end of the week, I was making my way to Lazimpat Uttar Dhoka to visit AutoSpa. And was I a happy camper that day?! Believe me when I tell you, you will be treated like a Bentley. Although I may not have looked as grand as a Bentley, I sure felt like one. The silky shine on my surface at the end of the day felt simply euphoric. To get me to gleam like that, they cleaned the pores on my surface with steam vapour and a PH balanced shampoo. Also, I had my tyres
and rims done. They even get your engine degreased and a UV protective dressing. Talk about your state of the art technology. Furthermore, since they use eco friendly and biodegradable cleaners you don’t get a free guilt trip while being pampered. To begin the pampering, they started with a clay bar to remove paint contaminants, tar, bugs, rust and everything else that shouldn’t have been there. After machine polishing my surface, they removed the small scratches and glazed the paint, UV protection included. Swirls and granules were a thing of the past owing to the compounding that they performed on my exteriors. As the ultimate form of protection, they finished off by sealing my pores with sealants. When they made sure I had streak free crystal clear windows, there was nothing else I could ask for. But the pampering had just begun. Following the extensive detailing on my exterior, they started focusing on the interiors. Not a carpet was left unturned. Believe me when I say this, AutoSpa can sure make a car feel coddled. They used full vacuum, steam vapour and chemical cleaning for my seats,

Got rid of all these scratches
An antiglare treatment on my windscreen with high grade polishing powder and special felt pads to polish out the scratches and contaminants put the cherry on top. At the end of the day, I felt like I was on top of the world. One can’t expect to be restored to as good as new, but the way I looked and felt before went through a considerable amount of change. I was practically gleaming with their ultra high gloss finish. My new gloss felt smooth as silk, a feather settling upon my hood most probably slip and slide off the surface. The interiors were even more stunning. It certainly exceeded my expectations. What pleased me the most was the attention to detail I received. My confidence level soared off the charts. After so many years, I finally felt a few eyes on me that didn’t try to burn a hole through my surface. I finally felt good about myself. A little shine up goes a long way. Best of all I seemed to have re-established my man’s attention. The grin on his face sparkled on the hood of my car. As the gleam in his eyes that I thought I’d never see shine for me slowly reappeared, a warm feeling of elation filled my engines and we drove like we had never driven before. It seems with cars that there are two types of people; those who keep their cars clean and shiny and in good repair, and those that take their cars as tin cans for transportation. Don’t fall into the second type. Treat your car right and we will treat you right. AL

BIKE MAINTENANCE
DIY: CHANGING YOUR
Spark Plug
Words: Ankit Shakya Photography: Sanat Dangol
T
he spark plug is quite simple in theory: It forces electricity to arc across a gap, just like a bolt of lightning to the combustion chamber of a spark-ignition engine to ignite the compressed fuel/air mixture therein by means of an electric spark, while containing combustion pressure within the engine. We recommend that you clean your spark plug with a strong solvent and wire brush every 1500 kms, and replace it once it has passed its prime. If your spark plugs show greyish or light tan coloration, your motorcycle is running about right. First off, let us make things clear, it does not mean that changing spark plugs will result in a large power increase. In most cases, removing even seriously worn out spark plugs will

only result in tiny power gains, typically about 1-2% of total engine output, only restoring it to its peak efficiency. Therefore, basically, replacing a worn out spark plug with new ones effectively restores the ignition system’s efficiency by reducing misfires, restoring power, enhancing the economy of operation and decreasing emissions. Moreover, by learning to change your motorcycle’s spark plugs, you will definitely cut back on the costs. And let’s face it, it is always a good feeling to get a bit of grease under your nails and feel the touch of metal on your skin (although we do recommend you wear gloves if you don’t like getting your hands dirty).
Spark plug = Rs 300
Let us begin Step 1 Prop up your bike on its centre stand and clear some space around you. Grasp the motorcycle’s spark plug wires near the spark plug end. Gently but firmly pull them off the spark plugs. If you yank too hard, you may need to buy a set of wires as well. Step 2 Now clean around the plug and the area where it fits the engine. Just digging around with a toothbrush is fine. The point is to keep crud from falling to the inside of your engine- that would be bad. Place the long socket over the exposed spark plug and with the help of the wrench unscrew it from the engine.
76
JANUARY 2012
www.autolife.com.np
Step 3 To determine a normal spark plug, see if the the firing end of the spark plug is brown or light gray, tan or gray. This indicates that the engine is running efficiently. Now check that the the spark plug gap is compatible with the engine manufacturers specification (Check Manual). A gap too small means that the spark duration will be very quick and the spark will be thin and weak, resulting in bad starting and high exhaust emission levels leading to an increase in fuel consumption. If the gap is set too large, the ignition system will not be able to cope with the demands and your bike may misfire. Step 4 First, screw the new plug in by hand until it is firmly set. Do not force anything. Tighten it properly with the wrench to ensure a snug fit.
Step 5 Replace the spark plug wire. You should hear a snap when they seat.
We recommend that you clean your spark plug with a strong solvent and wire brush every 1500 kms, and replace it once it has passed its prime. If your spark plugs show greyish or light tan coloration, your motorcycle is running about right.
Do send us your feedback about this DIY. Also feel free to send us any of your motorcycle related DIY that you would like us to feature in our magazine.
