s we started off on a new year, all of us toasted to better times, along with our favourite glass of something ofcourse. But we couldn’t have wished for a better time at Autolife being the recipients of some great fortune the last month. An exclusive brand like Ducati is something that you don’t really see littered all around the roads and who would have expected an official Ducati showroom actually opening up in Nepal? So being the ones to not give anything amiss, last month we went wild and insane on the uber cool Ducati Monster 796 and Hypermotard 796. And on the four wheelers front, we took the awesome handling Mazda 3 for a quick spin around KTM. We expect a lot of eye popping activity this time and as you flip over the pages to our review of these mean machines, be ready to wipe the drool off your mouth. The Ducati experience literally had our team member Ankit working on several bank robbery plans to accumulate cash for the Ducatis. So we sent him down to the Metropolitan Traffic Office at Durbar Marg. Well, not exactly so that they would jail him for his criminal intentions. We actually sent him there to get some information on their recent stern action and charges against drunken driving/riding. Well those of you who learnt about it the hard way, sorry for the delay. But for those who still have no idea, go through our interview with Inspector S.R.Hachhethu, who has left no stone unturned to explain the entire action and consequences involved in driving/riding under the influence. On every edition of Autolife, we made sure you were informed about every major Auto Show in the world. But sadly, we ourselves had never made it to any of the international ones. Hence this time, with India being nearby, our guy Saurav made a stop at this year’s Delhi Auto Expo to bring you an exclusive coverage. Turn to the pages of our expo coverage and become a spectator of this grand event in print. In spite of the road extensions to reduce traffic jams in the capital happening in full swing, some problems will still linger around. Like for this instance when a bunch of cows got our funny guy Shashank stuck on the road. If your funny bone hasn’t been tickled in a long time, then his comic experience is a must read. Finally for the roadtrip, this time due to popular demand, we did it on a four wheeler and took the robust Tata Safari to Swargadwari, a pilgrimage site in Pyuthan district in the mid western region of Nepal. Now isn’t all that more than enough for our mean machines issue? Until the next issue...

I loved two wheelers right from my childhood. I first started riding a cycle at the age of 5 and I got my own cycle as my birthday gift at the age of 6. When I was 8 years old, I wanted to learn how to ride a motorcycle, but I was a little too young for that. Also, since none of my family members owned a motorcycle, my passion for riding was put on hold. But every time someone that owned a motorcycle came to my house, I would ask for their keys. However, I still couldn’t ride a motorcycle, all I did was ignite the motorcycle and run the engine. Maybe my brother took pity on me because when I was 9, he took me to a football ground and taught me how to ride a motorcycle. I picked up on it on the first day and I was able to learn to ride it on that very day. At the age of 14 I got a Yamaha YBX as my 1st bike. Although I still hadn’t got my driving license, I was confident enough to ride the motorcycle around town. Eventually, after I passed my SLC, I went in for my trial exam for my motorcycle driver’s license. I was nervous at first but passed through all the poles, however my nervousness showed when I accelerated too hard after the last pole and my front wheel went air borne. Luckily I still passed. After finally getting my driver’s license, my confidence on a bike increased. Soon I started making more friends who were passionate about motorbiking. We used to go for rides and I soon realized I had pretty good control over my two wheeler. This is when I started to get into stunting. In 2008 I professionally entered into bike stunting and decided to start a career in it. Till now I’ve performed and participated in more than 15 stunt shows at various places of the Nepal. I have waited so long for this kind of quality magazine related with Automobiles: especially about Bikes in Nepal. I used to read “BikeIndia” and “Top Gear” magazines from India and always wondered whether there would be similar kind of magazine in Nepal. Now I can proudly say that “Team Autolife meets our Expectation”. I’m in Love with Autolife. I simply love reading this magazine. The presentation/contents and every article is superb. Eagerly waiting for the 4th issue!! We have belief in you guys and best of luck for your bright future.. :-) !!! DUCATI MUSEUM DECLARED HERITAGE SITE Ducati has bagged the honor of its technical archive and museum in Bologna becoming one of Italy’s prominent cultural heritage sites. The well preserved biking museum outlines the history of the company along with showing much of
their technical documentation, motorcycle engines that symbolize developmental landmarks and chronological details since 1946. After many changes in ownership, Ducati is currently owned by the Bonomi family. The Italian firm continues to spell its cast on enthusiasts around the globe with an ongoing barrage of back to back launches of several new and exciting motorcycles, the latest of which is their impressive 195bhp, Supersports 1199 Panigale.
KTM DUKE 200 LAUNCHED…FINALLY !! Bajaj Auto and KTM have launched the trendy, radically styled KTM 200 Duke at a mouthwatering, introductory price tag of IC Rs 1.17 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). This exciting and top drawer technology street bike is sure to fire up the premium bike segment in India, with bookings set to open from February 1. Butch, lean and aggressive, the striking 200 Duke proudly shows off KTM genes, every part visibly pared down to the minimum, allowing the 200 to respect KTM’s
‘ready to race’ tag. You couldn’t ask for a more tech-rich engine on an Indian motorcycle. The new KTM deploys a shortstroke, fourstroke and single-cylinder, 199.5cc powerplant. The 200 Duke will sell in India through the existing network of Pro-Biking stores spread over 30 Indian cities and 32 dealers. Now good news is that Bajaj will set up a KTM showroom here in Nepal too and we expect the bike to be priced much below NC Rs.4 Lakhs margin.
LOEB CLAIMS MONTE CARLO VICTORY
Sebastien Loeb started 2012 in the perfect fashion by clinching a dominant victory in the World Rally Championship’s Monte Carlo opener. The reigning champion looked like he might have a fight on his hands when 12

likely title rival Jari-Matti Latvala used a brilliant tyre choice amid changeable weather on day one to shoot into a half-minute lead. But when Latvala rolled his Ford out of first place late on Wednesday, Loeb’s Citroen was left alone at the front of the field, and he duly pulled away to claim a crushing sixth Monte Carlo win. To complete an ideal start to his latest title defence, Loeb was also quickest on the power stage, giving him a maximum 28-point score for the event.

INTERVIEW
DRIVING OR RIDING DRUNK IN NEPAL?? NO MORE !!
Illustrations: Sworup Nhasiju Interview by: Ankit Shakya
Late in 1769 when we Kathmanduties were dead drunk and making merry, King Prithvi Narayan Shah caught us off guard and took over our K-town. Today, it does not really matter if you are dead drunk and lying somewhere minding your own business. But if you are driving or riding, then it’s a different story. Now if you are ever caught driving/riding under influence with dilated pupils and a stench capable of awakening the dead from their grave, Inspector Sita Ram Hachhethu and his team will put you behind different set of bars. Established as a traffic officer for the past 21 years, he has made a mark for himself in the traffic scene and is already a household name. After long and impactful stints in places like Bhaktapur, Pathlaya, Kalimati, Koteshwor, Gaushala, etc. he is currently making a difference in Durbar Marg since the past 2 years. He makes it a point to remind us of the changing times and the importance of the traffic police in the current Nepalese context. The responsibilities and requirement of the traffic police force has quadrupled in the recent years. Especially with the lack of respect the general public has for the traffic rules, it was high time for the police to step their game up. Their latest action against driving/riding under the influence of alcohol and drugs is already the talk of the town. Well sure some of us found out about this the hard way. With even some of the elites of our nation nursing their hangovers in jail cells the next morning, it was pretty easy to configure the seriousness with which the Nepal Traffic Police were handling the situation. Unlike the past, now drinking and driving/riding freely around the streets of Kathmandu can really get you into trouble. Infuriated by what seemed to be a random ‘smell-and-assume-drunk’ policy adopted by the traffic police, public opinion for this act has so far been divided. Appreciation has been flowing from one side while on the other side people are infuriated that there is no such alcohol limit set as in the western countries. So we felt it our duty to clear things up, and who better to ask than the man of the hour himself, Inspector Sita Ram Hachhethu. 18
FEBRUARY 2012
AL: Your view points on the recent enforcement of the law against driving/riding under the influence. S.R.H: According to our regulations, it is clearly stated that driving/riding under the influence of alcohol or any other drugs is strictly against the law. I had recently attended a training session in Japan a month ago, and realized that the consequences of being caught driving/riding drunk were much more severe than that of Nepal. The actions we have taken actually look like a walk in the park compared to a fine ranging from Rs.3,00,000 to Rs.10,00,000 charged to drunk drivers in Japan. Also, drunken driving/riding is the third most popular cause of fatalities. The last thing we want is to give news to a waiting wife or mother that their husband/son was found dead under a truck. Furthermore, drunk drivers also cause the death of other innocent pedestrians. So there are no plans on behalf of the Nepal Traffic police to slacken the chains on this matter. www.autolife.com.np
AL: Most countries have a legal limit on alcohol consumption for drivers. What is the legal limit for Nepal? S.R.H: There have been many speculations and discussions on the legal alcohol limit that is acceptable for driving/riding. Here, I would like to make it clear that there is NO LEGAL LIMIT. You simply cannot indulge in intoxicating substances while driving/ riding and it is also clearly stated in our law. There are various other countries that have a certain legal limit of alcohol, but things are different in our country. Unlike other more developed nations, the road condition of Nepal is pathetic. Narrow potholed roads, divided by poorly aligned concrete blocks and lucky if dimly lit are not a suitable scenario for even a slightly tipsy driver. Moreover, with parked vehicles covering a third of the roads and pedestrians crossing roads facing the opposite direction of oncoming traffic, driving/riding sober is a challenge in itself. A.L: Another criticism of the new enforcement is the way the traffic police have been condemning suspected drunken drivers/riders, just by smelling and assuming. How exactly do you determine the drunk drivers? S.R.H: Since there is no acceptable limit to alcohol consumption, we base our suspicion on the sense of smell. Drivers are required to go through a simple ‘breath test’. If there are traces of alcohol smell they will be sent to a doctor for a blood alcohol test and if the tests come out positive, the driver will face the consequences. A.L: And what exactly are the consequences? S.R.H: The drunk driver will have to give up his driver’s license, spend the night in jail, take a 1 hour correctional lecture in the morning and will receive his license after paying a fine of Rs.1050. However, we do understand that in our culture (especially the Newari culture), there is the tradition of consuming alcohol as a Prasad. In such cases, where the driver is not too intoxicated, we will allow him/her to leave the car and the driver’s license and get it back in the morning after paying the fine. It all depends on how drunk you are and how well you cooperate. www.autolife.com.np
A.L: What happens to offenders that repeat the offence? S.R.H: Till date, there have been no reports of any repetitions. It seems that a night in jail gets the message across. But in an occurrence of such cases, the fine will be increased to Rs.5050 and the license will most likely be punctured once. A.L: Can the accuracy of alcohol consumption be solely based on the judgment of smell? S.R.H: Anyone who denies the suspicion will be given the option of a doctor’s test. Also, we will be introducing breathalyzers to every checkpoint in the next two weeks; currently we only have one breathalyzer. However, the breathalyzer also bases the judgment on the smell of alcohol on one’s breath. It is used only to prevent communicable diseases from transferring to the traffic officers. A.L: The traffic checks only seem to take place at night, what about the dangers of drunk driving/riding in the day time? S.R.H: It is because there have rarely been any reports of drunk driving/
riding during the day compared to at night. Also, during the day there are traffic personnel in every corner, so suspected drunk drivers can be dealt with easily. A.L: This is a great initiative taken by the Nepal Government to improve the safety of the Nepali citizens on the roads. What else can we expect to see in the Nepali traffic scene? S.R.H: We will soon be introducing the speed check gun to maintain the speed limits in the roads of Nepal. It is already in effect in Bhaktapur. It will soon be available all around the valley.
This emphasis taken by the Nepal Traffic Police to decrease the incidents of drunk driving/riding will sure make the roads safer for Nepali citizens. The Autolife team definitely supports the weekend party spirit, but we also emphasize on the importance of responsible drinking. Set a designated driver before a night out or you can even take a taxi back home. We hope the traffic police also make an initiative to insure that there are proper and fair transportation services available even during wee hours of the night. We agree on the no alcohol limit considering our roads, but we still would like to request the traffic authorities to maintain at least a certain limit in consultation with the doctors. If we were to go by smell, even a glass of beer could put us behind bars. With the set limit there will be fairer judgment made and the sincerity on behalf of the traffic police will also never be questioned. Till then party hard, but never drive/ ride drunk. P.S. If you fancy speeding on your car/bike after drinking, your days as a free bird are most likely numbered. In fact, your days on general may pretty much be numbered.

AUDI
Audi’s stall was very popular amongst the visitors. Everyone had their sight glued to the products that Audi presented ranging from saloons and SUVs to sports cars. The A3 e-tron concept, S6, A8, R8 V10 Spyder were the biggest launches. The new Q3 definitely garnered a lot of attention. Another product the viewers drooled over was the Audi A8 LW12, Audi’s high-performance luxury limousine. Alongside was the crowd-puller R8 V10 Spyder, Audi’s premium flagship supercar. Towards the exit of the stand was the Q7 with a mighty V12 under the hood that can go 0-100 in just 5.5 seconds and returning an impressive 9 kmpl. Audi A7 Quattro also graced the stall.
BMW / MINI COOPER The German carmaker launched its powerful new M5 saloon at the Delhi Auto Expo accompanied with the Mini range, including the Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper Convertible and Cooper S Countryman. However, there were no i3 and i8 concept as expected. Visitors were only allowed to look at the products from a distance making it difficult for visitors to observe the details and definitions.

Chevrolet India showcased 16 production and concept vehicles at the Auto Expo. The vehicles were displayed on Chevrolet’s stand under the three themes of Chevrolet Next, Chevrolet Technology & Innovation and Chevrolet Performance. Chevrolet also launched the much-awaited Chevrolet Sail Hatchback and the Chevrolet MPV. HYUNDAI
FORD èFord revealed its all new-compact SUV, Ford EcoSport, which will be launched by the end of 2012. It garnered appreciation from all quarters. Ford also had variety of setups to keep the visitors entertained. The most interesting being the EcoSport game where the visitors were able to control the compact SUV as it drove along the road.
MARUTI SUZUKI
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) showcased some significantly India bound vehicles at this auto expo. Hyundai revealed the latest-gen Sonata Sedan, the new Elantra sedan, Veloster coupe and a concept MPV called the Hexaspace. Similarly, Hyundai’s other offerings like the Eon, nicely modded nextgen i10 Verna and the Santa Fe were also showcased there. All in all, Hyundai had a big pavilion with the products widely kept appealing to the visitors.
Maruti Suzuki stall was one of the largest in the expo divided into several zones and also included the Suzuki Motorcyles Zone. Maruti unveiled its compact MPV, The Ertiga at the expo. Along with the Ertiga, Maruti also unveiled the new compact SUV called the XA Alpha.

SKODA
TATA/JAGUAR/LAND ROVER
Skoda showcased their Indian model line-up and displayed the Fabia Monte Carlo and the RS2000 at the stall. Although no new models or variants were launched, the main attractions were the Fabia Monte Carlo and the convertible RS 2000.
Small cars, commercial vehicles, robust Land Rovers and the roaring Jaguars; TATA had it all. TATA also unveiled the new Tata Safari Storme, the latest iteration of the good old Safari. Tata showcased their concepts in the midst of the Indigo Manza dieselelectric hybrid car and the notable Starbus Fuel Cell Concept which runs on hydrogen
VOLKSWAGEN
In my opinion, Volkswagen had the best and properly managed stall. People just couldn’t resist staring at the products Volkswagen offered. Volkswagen showcased the all new Beetle with its iconic look, the Touareg, XL1 and the Phaeton with other products like Polo and Jetta. The new face-lifted Phaeton grabbed my attention, so did the beautiful lady answering all the queries regarding the XL1.
and oxygen fuel cell to charge a battery to power the vehicle, the only emission being water. The jaw dropping Tata Pixel, a concept dimension of the Tata Nano powered by a 1.2 liter diesel engine featuring scissor doors claims to be a ‘zero-turn’ drive car making it capable of turning a full 360 degrees from stand still. Visitors were also swarming like bees trying to get glimpse of the Jaguar Supercars. Jaguar had their most powerful ever
built XKR-S and XF series in its stable along with the C-X75,a plug-in hybrid supercar. Besides the Jags were the off-road legends, Landrover. Landrover showboated their Defender Concept 100 and Defender Concept 100 sport along with the stylish Range Rover Evoque as well as the Freelander 2 and Landrover Discovery 4.
MAHINDRA & MAHINDRA Mahindra presented the Mahindra Reva concept in a cool Avatar, as well as the Thar jeep. On the 2-wheelers front were the 100cc Stallio, Rodeo, the 300cc Mahindra Mojo, Flyte, Duro DZ and the main highlight was the MPG30, the 125GP racing bike which proved the company’s progress in the professional racing circuit.

ROYAL ENFIELD The much-awaited Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500 and Desert Storm Classic 500 were launched at the Royal Enfield Stall. Royal Enfield also displayed their Café Racer Concept at the expo which was extremely loved by the viewers who hoped the bike would see production soon. Royal Enfield also showcased their bikes apparels and gears ranging from leather belts, riding jackets to pants, helmets etc.
BAJAJ Bajaj created much stir among the general auto enthusiastic by unveiling their compact car, the RE60. Personally, I did not have high expectations of what I thought was a not very visually appealing car but I changed my mind after I saw it live in front of my eyes. However, the quality of the body parts was a letdown. The Bajaj KTM Duke 200 and new breed of Pulsars was high in expectation but visitors were left dismayed.
DUCATI The Auto Expo saw the Indian launch of Ducati’s naked superbike, the Monster 795. What’s more is, due to the overwhelming response it received, Ducati decided to slash the price of the Monster by Rs 1 lakh and it is now available at an introductory limited-period price of IC Rs 5,99,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi).
TRIUMPH The legendary British motorcycle company’s stall was one of the most-awaited one because it was the company’s first display of products in India. Triumph had on display the seven bikes from its stable that are making their way in the Indian market. They had the iconic Bonneville, the Street Triple and Daytona 675 and the Speed Triple on display. Also on display were the Tiger 800XC and two cruisers – the 1700cc Thunderbird Storm and the 2300cc Rocket III.
SUZUKI Suzuki showcased their new bike, Hayate alongside its youth targeted scooter, Swish. However, with people’s expectation for bigger mill machines, it was a disappointment as the much talked about Suzuki Inazuma was not displayed.

TOYOTA Toyota pavilion was bright with white interiors and colorful tile patches in the ground. It looked top-notch and the pavilion was properly managed allowing every visitor to have a proper look at the products. Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd launched the new Innova, Fortuner and Land Cruiser at this year’s expo. The Japanese Carmaker also previewed its new Camry as well as an array of other products like the new Etios, new Etios Liva, Altis and also the updated Prius hybrid.
HERO MOTOCORP Hero MotoCorp launched 3 new products at the expo. They showcased their 125cc Ignitor, along with its first 110cc bike the Passion X Pro and its 110cc automatic scooter, the masculine Maestro. They also unveiled their hybrid concept scooter named “Leap” which will run on both battery and petrol. The Hero Impulse stole the limelight as first trans-terrain motorcycle by an Indian manufacturer.
TVS The glitzy and glamorous TVS stall had a pretty decent setup. TVS displayed their concept scooter QUBE and offroad bike RTR250FX as well as the 150cc Tormax. The stall also featured the refreshed TVS Star City accompanied by the Radeon 125DX and the unisex scooter TVS Wego in a metallic finish avatar.
HONDA MOTORCYCLE & SCOOTERS INDIA As always, HMSI did not fail to surprise with its display of the CBR100RR, the Fury VT1300CX. ,a 110 cc commuter bike called Dream Yuga, Dio in new Avatars and the most exciting of all was the CBR150R which was displayed alongside its bigger brother CBR250R.
YAMAHA Yamaha launched two limited edition colours for the YZF R15 and showcased a new scooter prototype called RAY for the Indian Market. Much to every bikers interest: Apart from it current line- up in the Indian market, Yamaha also showed off its YZR M1, YZF R1 - 50th Anniversary Special, FZ-1 and V-Max.
Despite the success, there were a few hiccups on behalf of the management. First off, the spectators were not properly handled and neither were the stalls. Second, finding the desired stalls was an adventure in itself. A clear floor plan regarding the location and hall numbers was lacking and created difficulties to the visitors. Manufacturers went as far as to put security guards around their stalls to answer any viewer queries with a defiant “NO”. Lastly, the infrastructure was not capable of handling 100,000 visitors a day. Nevertheless, the organizers pulled off this grand event nicely and made it very successful and lived up to its name of being Asia’s largest auto expo.

henever there is a talk about Brazil, most of us can’t help but start ranting about their huge success in the soccer arena. Of course some of the ignorant pervert types will rather immediately relate to their exotic samba dance. But a lesser known fact is that Brazil has had a successful stint at the Formula 1 Races too, with three F1 world champions who have all clinched the prestigious championship more than once. Football fans should remember that the Brazil national football team had dedicated its 1994 World Cup win to a certain Ayrton Senna. So who was he really? Ayrton Senna was a three-time Formula One world champion who is today widely regarded as one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time. Ayrton Senna da Silva was born on March 21, 1960, into a wealthy Brazilian family. He never needed to race for money but his deep need for racing began with an infatuation for a miniature go-kart his father gifted him. As a boy, the highlights of Ayton’s life were watching his Formula One heroes in action on television. At 13 he raced a kart for the first time and immediately won. Eight years later he went single-seater racing in Britain, where in three years he won five championships. He then finally made his Formula

One debut with Toleman-Hart in 1984. Deciding Toleman’s limited resources were inadequate for his towering ambition, Senna moved to Lotus-Renault the following year and won six Grand Prix’s over the next three seasons. Having reached the limits of Lotus too, he then decided the fastest way forward would be with McLaren where he joined Alain Prost in 1988. When McLaren-Honda won 15 of the 16 races, Senna beat his team mate Alain Prost eight wins to seven, to take home his first F1 Championship. Thereafter two

of the drivers became protagonists in one of the most infamous feuds in racing history. In 1989 Prost claimed the title by taking Senna out at the Suzuka chicane. Then finally again in Japan in 1990, Senna’s frustration at losing the title to Prost the previous year, bubbled over as he deliberately rammed Prost out of the Japanese Grand Prix; and thereby recovered the crown he regarded as a birthright. He retained the title in 1991 and managed to finish the 1993 season as runner-up, winning five races. Some of his greatest performances came in his final year with McLaren, following which he moved to Williams for the ill-fated 1994 season. Ayrton Senna did realize his dream of becoming the three-time Formula 1 world champion by winning even before the end of the championships, and
always at the Suzuka track. His innate speed and willingness to go right to the very edge forged Ayrton Senna into one of the greatest driver that ever sat in a F1 car. Though his tactics often bordered on the reckless, sometimes even worse than that, winning meant everything to Senna. He drove like a man possessed - some thought by demons. His ruthless ambition often provoked condemnation from critics. When Senna revealed he had discovered religion, Prost and others suggested he was a dangerous madman who thought God was his co-pilot. Even Senna confessed he occasionally went too far. As Ayrton Senna endlessly sought to extend his limits to go faster than himself, sadly the quest ultimately made him a martyr. On May 1, 1994, in the San Marino Grand Prix, as Senna entered the high-speed Tamburello corner on lap 7, his race leading car left the track at around 330 km/h and hit the concrete retaining wall at around 215 km/h. Within 2 minutes of crashing Senna was extracted from his race car and an on-site tracheotomy was performed before airlifting him to Bologna’s Maggiore Hospital, where he was declared dead hours later. Millions

saw it happen on television. Senna’s death was a national tragedy for Brazil, and the government declared three days of national mourning. The world mourned his passing and during his state funeral in Sao Paulo an estimated three million people lined the streets to offer him their salute. Senna was buried at the Morumbi Cemetery in his hometown of Sao Paulo. Apart from racing, Ayrton enjoyed a range of physical activities including running, waterskiing, jet skiing, and paddle boarding. He also had several hobbies, such as flying real and model planes and helicopters, boating, fishing and riding his favourite Ducati motorbikes. Ruthless and frequently misunderstood, Senna often did his best to hide a softer, highly emotional and compassionate side. After his death it was discovered that he had quietly donated an extremely large portion of his personal fortune estimated at around $400 million to help poor children. Beyond his driving genius Senna was also one of the sport’s most compelling personalities. As a tribute, in his home country of Brazil, one of the freeways of Rio de Janeiro and the main freeway from the international airport to Sao Paulo and a tunnel along route to the heart of the city was named in his honour. Between 1996 and 1998, Ducati also produced special Senna editions of their 916 superbike. Ducati was at the time owned by Claudio Castiglioni, a personal friend of Senna. In 2002, the MV Agusta F4 750 Senna motorbike was created, again by Castiglioni, now president of MV Agusta. On 25 July 2010, popular BBC motoring show, Top Gear paid an emotional tribute to Senna with Lewis Hamilton driving Senna’s original MP4/4, with which he won the 1988 title. A documentary film ‘Senna’ was released in 2010 which is definitely a must watch if you are a Senna fan or if you have never even heard of the legend. Early in 1994 when questioned about his future he spoke, “I want to live fully, very intensely. I would never want to live partially, suffering from illness or injury. If I ever happen to have an accident that eventually costs my life, I hope it happens in one instant.” And so it did, on that ill fated day. Senna remains a national hero in Brazil and till today his grave still attracts more visitors than the graves of John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley combined.

e mostly tend to blame that one individual who causes an unnecessary traffic jam at the most inconvenient of times. Yes, there are convenient times to get stuck in a traffic jam too. Imagine you are driving with this girl you really like. You wouldn’t mind even if you were stuck on the road the entire day. Of course unless you had some other plans. Another convenient time to get stuck in a traffic jam would be, well ummm… I think that’s the only one reason I have. As I was saying, traffic jams are irritating and an utter waste of one’s time. It could really ruin your well planned day, your mood and sometimes that takeaway food you are carrying. But as they say (for the record, I don’t know who they are) even the worst situations can sometimes surprisingly make you smile. Like this one instance when I was stuck in traffic. It wasn’t any road mishap, neither was it some Uncle’s badly parked vehicle on the road, nor were any of our honorable VIP politicians passing through. Turned out that the culprit for this particular jam was erm…. our HOLY COWS!!! Hard to believe, isn’t it? Well I have photographic evidence.
am, had to stop and capture this hilarious moment. I parked my bike and started taking pictures. As I am doing my act, this conductor from the micro bus gets off and decides to ruin the day for these sorry cows. It was a pretty site seeing him gently chasing the five cows to the side of the road. The guy must have been a cow herder back at the village because he was doing it pretty well. Man, bulls are huge but turned out to be surprisingly timid as they obediently moved towards the side of the road. Now as far as general stories are concerned the story should have ended. But since this happened in my presence, there’s always a funnier climax. So the holy cows and bulls moved towards the side of the road to where my bike was parked and well, started vigorously smelling it, top to bottom. Then the huge bull among the lot started to smell my helmet, which was placed on top of the bike’s tank. Now my guess is that the bull probably got pissed that my helmet was covered in leather and he probably thought I was a slaughterer of some kind. So, maybe as a sign of resentment, he tipped my helmet to the floor. As I was still clicking away, their attention was drawn towards my camera. Guess what they wanted to do to my camera? Yes, SMELL it too. As I stepped back, one of them kept following me and I kept clicking some close up shots. This happened for a couple of minutes. Then I suddenly realized
that I had to actually get to work on time. And I was playing with them holy cows here! So I shooed them away, picked my helmet and moved away happily. Didn’t expect me to shake hands with them and bid goodbye did ya? The way I perceive things, I believe every story has a moral. You could either let things pass or pay so much attention that it somehow manages to relate to something sensible. What I learnt from these cows and bulls that day was - We have every right to do what we want, wherever we want and how we want it. You are the master of your universe and decide your actions but you know you need to back off when your actions become a hindrance to the people around you. It’s amazing how even animals can teach humans a thing or two about living life the right way. Just like the cows and bulls, we need to develop in ourselves the power of being adamant as well as conscious towards sensitivity...
Basically, it was a handful of cows and bulls basking in the sun and resting on the middle of the road. As far as my intelligence could figure, they weren’t on any kind of strike, and definitely didn’t look like the rowdy types ready to harass the public. They were but a bunch of clean, well behaved, and smart looking group. Then why were they sitting in the middle of the road? I guess it was because they simply felt like sitting there, minding their own business. Expressing free will, maybe. Me, being the crazy photographer I www.autolife.com.np

t’s popularly said that four wheels move the body and two wheels move the soul. But I left my soul behind when I opened the throttle on the manic Ducati Hypermotard and hung on for dear life. I do not exaggerate. The way the machine bolts the moment it hits 3500rpm, involuntarily tightens your grip on the handlebars. And all that power does not compromise on the dexterity in handling. Aim this ruffian at something (or someone), twist the throttle and watch it merrily propel itself to the challenge as your target scrams out of your way. Intimidation comes naturally to the Hypermotard. Well sculpted headlights settle over a beaky mudguard that hovers high over the wide 120/70 section front wheels. The 43mm Marzocchi upside down forks lead to a wide handle bar with hand-guards that host the front indicators. Rearview mirrors flip out from the ends of the handlebars for that blurred view of watching the traffic that you just left behind. A Sachs shock with dual-locking ring preload adjustment and rebound damping adjustment works out back. A small, orange backlit MotoGPstyle instrument panel offers digital rpm, speed, and trip info, as well as the ability to memorize lap times. The 12.5 litre fuel tank keeps the front pretty slim, but the size tapers to wider proportions as you reach the tail. Large dual tail pipes make its way out under a slim wide taillight, everything stabilized upon 180/55 section beefy Pirelli Diablo Rosso tyres. Seats widen up for the pillion and futuristic slim triangular indicators at the rear complete the hooligan facade for the Ducati. Powering the motard is a 90 degree L-twin cylinder air cooled engine with horizontal cooling fins. With a bore and stroke of 88mm x 66mm, the bike is able to develop power of 81bhp @ 8000rpm and rev high with 75.5nm @ 6250rpm very smoothly. Though mileage should be the last thing on your mind aboard a bike like this, Ducati assures that the Hypermotard is their most fuel efficient motorcycle with capability of nearly 20kmpl mileage.
Although the engine emits a shallower note as expected, it’s enough to intimidate anything in its path as well as turn practically every head in your direction.

Although the engine emits a shallower note as expected, it’s enough to intimidate anything in its path as well as turn practically every head in your direction. Perched upon a moderately tall seating position, the upright riding position provides the rider with a better view over the crowd from where you can scout a route out of dead-still traffic jams with considerable ease. However, shorter riders will have to be on their toes as the seats are slightly higher at 825mm. But once you get rolling, the feet rest at ease on rightly placed foot pegs, providing relaxed riding through the urban jungle. However there is one nagging slip up on this Italian masterpiece for urban riding on our congested roads. The lengthy side mirrors that fold out from the handlebar make the bike wider and simply a pain in our www.autolife.com.np

jam packed traffic. There is no other alternative but to flip them in when you are at close quarters with other vehicles on the side and trying to power through the roads. Though there weren’t any such problems with clear view of the rear, conventional mirrors are highly recommended. Unlike other bigger bikes, the Hypermotard handles terrific at lower RPMs and is a boon for manoeuvring through sinuous traffic and winding roads. The light and easy clutch rids the Hypermotard of the difficulties you’d expect with an 803cc engine. You can rev it around the city in first gear or play the clutch through second and lug it alongside traffic easily. A few minutes around town on the Hyper and you get the confidence to practically flick the bike past the haphazard office hour traffic like it was your normal Indian motorcycle. It’s that rider friendly. As expected, roaring through the six lane highway was a rumbling breeze. Reaching staggering speeds only to be restricted by lack of safe and open asphalt would have been a better experience if there was some form of windshield to reduce the windblast. Nonetheless, it was great to feel like the Flash for a while. Further along the way, a small patch of off road terrain on the way to Nagarkot proved the comfort provided by the front suspension
and rear mono suspension. The scattered potholes of the Nepali roads definitely didn’t bother the Hypermotard. The Hypermotard insists on remaining nimble on winding roads as well. The best part had to be the twists and turns encountered on the way to the top of Nagarkot hill. Shift your weight and provide a little pressure on the handlebars and the Hypermotard obediently follows your every command through the tightest of hairpin turns. Despite the front wheel not feeling as settled as you’d want it to, the massive rear wheel more than makes up for it. Whether you’re at breakneck speeds or testing the agility on winding tarmac, the rear tyre keeps you well grounded, providing the confidence a rider needs. Despite the large and intimidating dual 305mm discs and single 245mm disc at the rear with radially mounted Brembo calipers, braking wasn’t as frightening as I’d assumed. That certainly does not imply that the breaking was anything less than crisp. Although the front forks dive during aggressive braking, it can be easily countered by a touch of the rear brakes. Braking was smooth and easy in traffic as well, further supporting the practicality factor that is something of a novelty in Ducati’s.
O
verall, the Ducati Hypermotard 796 is a great balance between swift agility at every lean and punchy power at a flick of the wrist. Surprisingly easy handling makes tossing the beauty through turns great fun and you’d put off important work just to ride that extra kilometre on it. You can feel the torque that this bike dishes out as you make the normally swift commercial Indian speedsters seem lethargic. However, comparing anything to these Italian splendours would be quite unfair, to the Ducati that is. Ducati has provided Nepal with a machine that can be as practical as these machines can get. But if you are willing to cough up a cool Rs 18,50,000, practicality would be the last of your worries. Swing a leg over the seat, kick up the side stand and you will experience the sure footed nimbleness as you rev through the gears. Saying that the Hypermotard turns heads would be an understatement of the highest degree. The 796 is an immensely involving and joyful machine. This is a bike to fall in love with. All in all, it’s a bike made to make you smile – and does so with ease.

he moment I rode into the Himalayan Enfielders Workshop in Lazimpat, I discretely snuck my Honda Unicorn behind a wall. With more Enfield’s commanding the territory than you could count on your fingers and toes, my Unicorn certainly felt a little threatened. Hence I felt it was best that it mind its own business alone in the corner. Plus, it looked a little out of place amongst the Royal Enfield’s which were different than the ones you see mostly in the streets. It’s not every day that you see a classic Royal Enfield Bullet that runs on diesel, brakes with the left foot and has hand gear shifters on the right. And that’s probably because there are only five in Nepal and 3 are being worked on at this workshop. With the fore mentioned diesel run engines calmly waiting to be completely restored in one corner of the workshop, a slightly newer generation of bullets waited their turn on the opposite corner. To be able to restore a rusting antique into a timeless classic as well as maintaining the newer technologically advanced ones, you can find no better place than the Himalayan Enfielders Workshop. With a humble beginning in 1990 in Sundhara, after selling around 30-40 bikes, the club couldn’t sustain and it closed down. However, it came back with a bang in the summer of 2000, and the workshop today boasts of over 800 club members and 12 glorious years of riding. Originally founded by 6 members, Pramod Shrestha (aka Goofy Dai) is the only active member at the moment.
to the Royal Enfield’s; ranging from minor kink adjustments to fully fledged modifications, obviously within the hazy legal boundaries set by the Nepal government- a rule ofcourse which Goofy Dai is not completely satisfied with. Frigid legal requirements require a little leniency, according to Goofy Dai. A modification to a bike does not necessarily mean that it makes it unsafe to ride. It’s especially when it comes to
police tantrums on minute issues like deciding to have only one seat on ones Bullet and the workshop has to bear the heat for it. “You buy a new bike, you’re not comfortable with it and you want to modify it according to your personal needs. I believe that one should be allowed to do that as long as it’s done in a safe manner,’’ says Goofy Dai. The workshop is pretty well stocked when it comes to spare parts and anything not available will be in a couple of day’s time. What everyone may not already know is that the workshop is not

may befall) generates a greater sense of brotherhood. However, Goofy Dai insists that they are a close knit family and are NOT to be mistaken for a gang. Anyone is welcome to join. Contrary to popular misconception, Enfielders are not to be taken as superior riders nor do they wish to be categorized into the genre. They are but everyday people with a passion for riding their Royal Enfield motorcycles. just a place to repair your Enfield. They have also been offering tours to exotic locations not only over Nepal but to India (mainly Darjeeling, Sikkim), Bhutan and Tibet as well; Tibet being their prime destination. The simple thought of straddling a Royal Enfield along with a swarm of other similar thumping mechanical beauties and touring the asphalt (or whatever terrain
www.autolife.com.np
This brings us to the point of most people’s perspective of the Royal Enfield’s. RE’s have been gathering a sketchy rep and for all the wrong reasons. Widely accepted as suitable for only a niche group, these bikes are often considered quite a handful for the ordinary working man. Considered to be a fuel guzzling beast, they are also not considered popular for its dependability. Furthermore, with its reputation of denting one’s wallet, not everyone can jump at the chance of owning this misunderstood beauty. According to Goofy Dai, it all comes down to the concept of low proportions in comparison to other bikes. Unlike other common two wheelers we spot everywhere we look, Royal Enfield’s are pretty low in number. So the mechanical problems of a Pulsar for instance would be lost in their colossal swarm, but the RE’s stick out like a thorn and become much more prominent. In fact, the workshop charges only Rs. 450 as service charge, something that seems pretty affordable. Moving on to the predicament of fuel
consumption, this boils down to the rider and his/her habits. When one rides an Enfield, there is a connection between the bike and the rider. Devour the utter epiphany of the thumping beast you are straddling and give it a little tender loving care and it will give you everything it has to offer. Respect your ride and reap the benefits. Treat it like junk and suffer the consequences. A fine example, Pramod Dai’s ’95 Bullet which he brought back to life from its grave at a village field, still gives an average of 35kmpl. This is example enough for the Bullet’s reliability and utility. And in order to actually get a feel of the ride and bike, there is no better way than to straddle a brute, thumping oldie. As per Goofy Dai: “The newer versions are all well and good, but if you are amongst the ones that can distinguish between the thump and the noise of a Bullet, you know you should go for the older Enfields.” If you ever encounter problems with your RE, the Himalayan Enfielders Workshop is always there to help, especially when you’re a member. The workshop also encourages riders to learn the basic mechanics and become more in touch with the bike. Acquiring this simple skill can turn out to be a boon when it comes to touring. Also, if a member encounters a problem he/she cannot take care of themselves and are stuck in the middle of nowhere, Himalayan Enfielders mechanics will provide their repair services wherever need be. And there are other perks of becoming a member of the Himalayan Enfielders. A member is notified of upcoming tours with a welcome invitation to any tour and you get a free T-shirt. At just Rs. 1500 for the membership charge, all this seems worthwhile. You can also get to participate in the social awareness programs that the club organizes from time to time. All in all, you are part of a family. With their newly opened branch in Jhamsikel, the Himalayan Enfielders are here to stay. For the last 12 years, they have been providing the Enfielders of Nepal with their facilities and services and they will continue to do so in the long run. The Enfield and the workshop are going to be around for a long time. Look out for upcoming tours and events being organized by them in the near future and feel free to join. MOVIE REVIEW
ROAD PLAYLIST
FASTEST Movie “Fastest” is the highly anticipated documentary by Mark Neale, who previously directed two other brilliant films about MotoGP: “Faster” and “The Doctor, the Tornado and the Kentucky Kid”. “Fastest” uses the same winning formula as “Faster”. It is jam packed with intimate chats with riders and those close to them, great on track action shoots, loud guitars and interesting technical bits. The movie focuses mainly on the 2010 season, the year Valentino Rossi broke his leg and Jorge Lorenzo became World Champion. However, it is not a season review. Mark Neale also takes the opportunity to look back at the history of MotoGP: Lorenzo’s first season with its high and lows, Rossi’s love story with Yamaha, Stoner and Hayden’s world titles, previous epic battles on track (Rossi/ Biaggi – Stoner/Rossi – Simoncelli/Barbera

Vehicle Insurance

• Accidental damage of the vehicles • Third Party Liability • Personal Accident of the driver and the passengers
W
ith congested roads everywhere, work pressure and time bound, we move on to our destination each day in our vehicles. How safe are we in such situations? Especially this is an important point to consider when we are in the roads of Nepal. So, auto insurance popularly known as Vehicle Insurance can help us during an unseen road event. Auto insurance covers both the damage of the vehicle and loss of vehicle by fire, lightning, explosion, earthquake, flood and inundation, storm & landslide, theft, etc, along with the accident of the driver and passengers. It also covers the third party liability generated due to the vehicle accidentally. In cases where all the above mentioned risk is covered, it is known as comprehensive policy. But one can choose for all the risk or any one of them as per the requirement. However, third party liability is the compulsory one. The amount of premium for vehicle insurance is tariff based and depends mainly upon the cubic capacity and the value of the vehicle. For many of us vehicle is still a luxury and a huge damage or loss of the vehicle would mean huge investment loss that will take years to recover. Especially if one buys the vehicle on loan facilities, the loss would be enormous.

days on the road driving the formidable Tata Safari 1100kms across varying terrains... That was pretty much how I had welcomed the New Year with seven of my brothers. We started off on the 28th of December, 2011 and the idea was to make it to Pokhara for the New Year Eve celebrations after visiting Swargadwari Temple at Pyuthan district in the mid western region of Nepal.

With most of us working past noon, we could only depart on our road trip at 3pm for a late start on the Tata Safari. Fuel shortage was still an obstacle during our trip and that meant further delay in exiting the valley with vehicles lined up at every fuel station, taking up almost half of the road space. We were victim of the shortage too, but we were determined to not fall behind on schedule and managed a full tank at an inflated price after pulling a few strings. Slugging behind traffic jams, we made it to the open roads beyond Naubise by 5pm. We had some quick afternoon snacks at Naubise and continued on the drive towards Narayanghat for the night. The food lovers that we were, we had to grab some fish at Malekhu too. Thanks to another stopover, it wasn’t until 7pm that we got back on the road. Finally after some night driving through the jungle highway guided by the powerful headlight beams of the Safari, we reached Narayanghat and checked into our hotel. We then feasted on a delicious dinner of naans, biryanis and a couple of full chicken tandooris at a popular Indian joint there and hit the bunkers for tomorrow’s long drive. FEBRUARY 2012

Although Narayanghat wasn’t as cold as the capital, the fog on the road was dense and visibility was very bad. Nevertheless, after a quick breakfast we continued towards our destination. The terai roads are fun to drive on with its arrow straight roads but one needs to be very careful in the town areas where cyclists and cattle dominate the road. The Safari, with its huge road presence, also ensured that the trucks and buses didn’t take us lightly on the highway. We stopped for lunch at Daune where the Nepali set meal with smoked chicken is a famous fare amongst regular travellers along the route. Since we pretty much had the whole day and liked overflowing plates, we chose one of the juicy chickens that were hung over the firewood oven to be prepared for lunch. After lunch we moved towards Butwal and got ourselves some packet snacks for the journey. After the frequent breaks for snacking by the highway we finally reached Bhalubang. But the road all the way till Bhingri, our stop for the night, exceeded our expectations. Contrary to what we had heard, it was a very well pitched winding road. One of the best I have been to so far. The only problem was that it was slightly narrow with lots of blind corners and minimum area for correction should any vehicle approach from the other end. Since we were driving through in the evening it was considerably safer with the headlight beams warning us of oncoming traffic. We found ourselves a cosy hotel in Bhingri and had the hotel prepare dinner after slaughtering another sturdy local chicken. We later learned that the infamous unforgiving path that people warned us about was another alternate route from a different district, Dang. So our current route was a choice well made, despite the fact that it was a complete fluke. We now only had a 13km off road remaining to reach Swargadwari. It was a narrow uphill off road route all the way till Swargadwari. We were aware of the off road route and I was hoping to complete the route on a motorcycle. I had even taken my helmet just in case we found a motorcycle on hire in Bhingri. However, being a small village town, Bhingri didn’t offer us any motorcycles on rent and we couldn’t even find one with the hotel owner’s help. So, having no other option, we crammed into the Safari again and hit the

slightest of worries. Another heavy lunch and we set out on our return journey towards Palpa. Since there was a bandh announced at Bhalubang till the afternoon, we pretty much had the roads to ourselves with hardly any oncoming traffic. The 210kms to Palpa were covered pretty soon and we reached there by 6pm in the evening. Since most of us had already been around Palpa, we did a brief bit of sight-seeing the next day and moved towards Pokhara after lunch. The drive to Pokhara was through the scenic Siddhartha Highway with scenic mountain views along riversides. Machapuchhre kept playing hide and seek, being visible only at certain sections of the roads near to Pokhara. We reached Pokhara by 6pm in the evening, just in time for New Year’s Eve celebrations at the Pokhara Street Festival. Lucky for us, the Safari was a delight Pokhara was crowded like never before in handling the off road and ensured with almost the entire Pokhrelis and we got back on tarmac without the tourists enjoying the festival along safari dicor facts the lakeside. We spent the night On board entertainment - Music System partying and drinking away. It was Headrest mounted LCD screens on front seats Height adjustable driver’s seat a good decision to come to Pokhara road. Swargadwari is counted amongst Nepal’s top pilgrimage sites. It is a hilltop temple complex located in Pyuthan District at an altitude of 2100m. It is said to have been founded by one Guru Maharaja who spent most of his life in the vicinity herding and milking thousands of cows. Myth has it that after his death, his favourite cow also died at the same instant and the rest of the cows miraculously disappeared within a few days. Hundreds of sages, cows, Sadhu etiquettes, Agni Kunda etc are the other attractions which spark a spiritual and religious fervour in visitors. Swargadwari also offers panoramic views of mountains in tranquil and peaceful surroundings. It is believed that a pilgrimage to the place opens the doors for Heaven and wishes are fulfilled.

The Safari with its huge road presence also ensured that the trucks and buses didn’t take us lightly on the highway. had to walk for about half an hour to reach the temple. After the regular worship rituals we got back on the highway and continued towards home. On the way back we also visited another temple, Chabdi Barahi Mai Temple, which is roughly a 7kms off road drive from District Headquarter Damauli. This is one of the most visited temples in Tanahun District. The fishes in the pond inside the temple are supposed to be the symbol of the goddess and the long snake-like fishes inside the temple are also one of the attractions of the temple. Visiting all these temples along our road trip was a divine experience and there could have been no better way to thank the lords for protecting us during the entire trip.
for New Year celebrations after all. We woke up to 2012 with massive hangovers and collective resolutions to keep having fun just like we did the last 5 days, even in the years ahead. Since we were already on a pilgrimage of sort, we decided to visit two other recommended temples along the route back home. The first one was Dhor Barahi, a diversion from Kotre, which was some 32kms from Pokhara on the way to Kathmandu. We had a delicious Thakali lunch at a popular restaurant in Kotre and moved towards Dhor Barahi, some 4kms away. Midway along the off-road route we encountered an awesome river canyon which we were totally unaware of. The place Dulegauda alongside the Seti River had a huge waterfall drop under a bridge and a scary rocky ravine structure through which the Seti River flowed. The place should be a delight to visit especially during the monsoons when there is more water and definitely should not be missed on any road trip to Pokhara. After some off roading we www.autolife.com.np
It was already 8pm by the time we crossed Malekhu and to add to our delay, two buses had rammed into each other blocking the entire highway. It had started to rain and we could figure out it would take time for the mess to clear up. So we returned
to Malekhu for dinner. It was already 10pm in the evening and the hotel had already run out of food. Yet again, we decided on having another local chicken butchered for our dinner. Yes, the last one for the trip. After some merry making by the hotel and even calling up the Prime Minister’s Office hotline to inform about the situation at the highway, the roads finally cleared at 1am in the morning. It was four in the morning by the time we reached home and while people were beginning to wake up, we caught up on some much needed sleep. The Tata Safari proved to be a formidable and comfortable tourer with no mechanical troubles what so ever. Overall, it was a road trip that did not disappoint!

CLEANING your CAR BATTERY
Y
our vehicle’s battery is the starting point for every system it uses. This is because it is used to start your car! You should never let anything come between your car and a good battery connection unless you want your day to come to a grinding halt with a stalled car in the garage. It takes only a millimetre of crunchy white residue to keep your car from starting. So here’s how you get your battery cleaned. No, not by calling up your mechanic! Here’s how you do it yourself: *It’s always a good idea to wear a pair of latex gloves, to help keep your hands clean and protect them from battery acid. Also work in a well-ventilated area away from sparks or open flames. Batteries contain Sulphuric Acid and it can burn your skin and is very corrosive to anything it comes in contact with.
SOME TIPS: 1. If your car battery usually doesn’t hold a charge and occasionally does not start up on you, here’s what you can do to ensure if it’s the alternator or battery that is at fault. To check your alternator yourself get the car running. Yes, most likely by jump starting it. With the car running, remove the positive (that’s the red) cable from your battery. Don’t worry, you won’t get shocked but don’t be a goofball and touch the red while touching the black. If your car dies by simply removing that red cable, your alternator is most likely bad. If it doesn’t, then your battery is bad. 2. Maybe it’s an interior light, your cigarette lighter, or your radio that isn’t working. The first place to check is the fuse box and not the cables linking to the battery. The fuse box is an easily accessible common placement for a fuse box is under the steering wheel around where your knees are located while driving. If you cannot find it, use the index of your vehicle owner’s manual. 72
FEBRUARY 2012
STEP 1 The first step towards a clean battery is the removal of your battery terminals. Just like you can’t wash your feet with your shoes on, you can’t properly clean a battery post with the cables connected. Disconnect the negative cable first and then disconnect the positive cable. Yes, nothing might have happened when you did it the other way around earlier but that’s not how its meant to be done and you were just lucky nothing blew up.
STEP 2 Now that you are looking at just the battery and terminals separately, you can clean them up liberally. First, clean the terminals with a brush or sand paper. Then move towards the battery posts. There are a number of ways to get the corrosion off your battery posts. Even pouring Coca-Cola over your battery can remove the white stuff. Otherwise, make a corrosion eating fluid of your own by mixing baking soda and water. Sprinkle the solution on the battery posts and terminals, especially the inside. Brush or sand away the stubborn build-up. Then rinse it off with a little water and dry it with a clean cloth.
STEP 3 Reattach the positive battery cable first and then the negative battery cable. Then give the terminals a good coating of some White Lithium Grease or Petroleum Jelly to keep them from getting corroded. If you do not have maintenance free battery then also check for water levels and top up with distilled water if required. You are back in business! Start the engine and you’re done... www.autolife.com.np

How to adjust your
Motorcycle Clutch
T
he clutch is a series of spring-loaded plates that, when pressed together; connect the transmission to the crankshaft. The clutch mainly helps in engaging and disengaging power from the engine crankshaft to the transmission. Without the clutch, the only way to stop the wheels from turning would be to turn off the engine – not a very practical solution is it?
When a rider wants to shift gears, he uses the clutch to disconnect the transmission from the crankshaft. Once the new gear is selected, he uses the clutch to re-establish the connection. To operate the wet clutch that most motorcycles fashion, there is a lever on the left handlebar. A cable runs from this lever to the clutch plates that are forced together by spring pressure. When you pull the lever in, the cable pulls a device to push the pressure plate away from the clutch plates releasing the spring tension. This allows the two drums, one that is connected to the transmission main shaft and the other to the engine, to rotate independently. If there is a glitch in the clutch cable operation, transmission isn’t smooth and it may damage your engine. Things you’ll need: * Your motorcycle * Opposable thumbs
From your wallet: • Nil
Step 1
Step 3 Unlock the lock-ring on the adjuster nut on clutch lever to adjust free play. Turn the pushrod adjuster bolt in while holding the lever against the bar lightly until it starts to force the lever away for some distance. (Do this more than once to get the feel). Take up excessive cable slack and maintain free play at about 15mm at lever end.
Collapse the adjuster on the cable sleeves all the way.
Step 4 Step 2 Pull the lever against the bar and hold it there with slight force.
An alternate option to adjust free play is from the clutch cable and actuation lever at the engine end. But that’s best left to your mechanic. Lock it and put back the adjuster sleeve. You are now good to go.
ROAD SIGNS
Let’s admit it, we don’t give as much attention to traffic signs as they deserve. In fact most of us don’t even look at such markings on the road when driving/ riding. But they are there to provide information to road users and at times life saving too. Apart from the numerous road signs and the easily interpreted ones, here are few that we think you should be familiar with and take seriously. STOP AND GIVE WAY
The sign is used at the junction with major roads where visibility is poor or it is unsafe for vehicles to enter the junction without stopping. It instructs Drivers to bring their vehicles to a complete stop and not proceed until it is safe to do so.
