EDITORIAL THE NEW YEAR ISSUE

T

The Suzuki Baleno was one of the most awaited products to come to Nepal. With the hype it created in the Indian market, the masses here were eagerly awaiting its arrival, and it’s finally here. This large hatchback has been receiving great reviews and we took it out for a spin to see what all the fuss was about. Check it out in our cover story in this issue. Another popular forerunner in the two wheeler market is the brand new CB Honda Hornet 160R, and we have that on test too. We love it because it is far from the conventional commuter Honda seems to focus on when it comes to the Nepali and Indian market. The Hornet has a mean sting and has the muscle to get noticed. The good folks at Vintage and Classic Motor Inc. Nepal in association with FIA and NASA foundation helped rekindle an old romance between the city of Kathmandu and their love for vintage vehicles. The classics shone in all their glory from the 14th-16th of May at the Nepal Art Council. But if you missed out on the event, check out our coverage inside. Don’t miss the beautiful and exclusive road trip from BikerzAus Nepal to Lomanthang. There is plenty more to keep you busy this issue. We’ll catch you again next month with more of the same. Cheers.

PARAS KHADKA CAPTAIN - NEPAL NATIONAL CRICKET TEAM.

The bigger and more rugged evolution of the Fiat Punto Evo, the Fiat Avventura, is a popular buy. There are many who love the crossover from Fiat and one of them is Paras Khadka, the National Cricket team captain of Nepal. He also happens to be the brand ambassador for Fiat in Nepal. Here is what he thinks of the Fiat Avventura. “The ground clearance with the Punto was never an issue, but the extra height is an added bonus considering the roads of Nepal. It is a great car to get around the city in, and you won’t find yourself tearing your hair out finding a parking spot or stuck in traffic jams. And I love the way it looks, inside and out. The exterior is different which gets the attention of people, and the interiors are of good quality which helps give the Fiat Avventura a premium feel. It has plenty of space and leg room which is crucial for a comfortable drive.

OWNER’S REVIEW

After having spent much time with the Tata Indica, I decided to switch to Zest. The Zest’s First-in-Class Multidrive engine, price affordability and other Best-in-Class features persuaded my purchase decision. And I must admit I am mighty impressed. Tata Motors has really moved the game forward from where it used to be. The Zest feels good enough to compete and hold its own against the worthy competition in its class. The overall design of the sedan is excellent as compared to the competition. The interior is equally striking. Every detail inside the exceptionally spacious cabin of the Zest is thoughtfully crafted for your personal comfort. The infotainment system developed by Harman definitely sets the Zest apart from everything else in the segment. From every stitch of the seat to a feature loaded dualtone dashboard and advanced steering controls, the Zest is built to spell luxury. Step into the Zest and you’ll find exceptional shoulder and head room and the most spacious cabin in its class, which is enough for an average Nepalese family. The talking point of the Zest has been the multi-drive Revotron engine. I am surprised with the overall driving dynamics. The automatic gearbox too is butter smooth. The nature of my work demands that I travel vigorously. I frequently visit places outside Kathmandu Valley with the Zest as my companion. I am satisfied with the sedan’s performance on highways. The other best thing about the sedan is that it returns an impressive mileage; both in city and highway. The after-sales service of Sipradi is excellent. They, in fact, take a time to call their customers regularly. The other impressing thing is that I get calls from Mumbai as well regarding the sedan. I really appreciate this. To conclude, I would definitely recommend the Zest to anyone wanting to buy a new sedan. Tata Motors has taken a step in the right direction with the Zest, which not only looks attractive but among the best styled compact sedans available in Nepal today.

For anyone looking for a sensible buy in the two wheeler’s market, Honda’s Unicorn is a very sensible buy. It is a proper commuter, gives amazing mileage, and gets you from one point to the other no problem. However, it doesn’t make you want to twist the throttle or lean into corners or chase the horizon. You can do it, but it was built to be a commuter. Its sibling, on the other hand, is a completely different story. The Honda CB Hornet 160R puts the sting in a run of the mill commuter. The Japanese automakers, who have a tendency to favor sensible non aggressive small bikes, have stepped it up with the CB Hornet 160R by fusing the utility of a commuter with the styling and aggression of their bigger bikes; more specifically the Honda CB 600F Hornet. So what we have here is the best of both worlds. It could be too good to be true, but we’d never know that unless we gave it a go ourselves. And that is exactly what we have done.

STYLING AND DESIGNS We wouldn’t be surprised if we found out the designers at Honda’s headquarters were rocking out to metal music when they came up with the styling and designs for the Honda CB Hornet 160R. This is an aggressively designed motorcycle which makes its sibling look like a wuss. It is sharply designed with a sportier appeal, and we love it. Right from the sharp cut edges on the fuel tank to the radical X shaped LED tail lamp. Although the headlamp, which resembles the CB 1000R, gives the bike a good look, the masculine and well sculpted fuel tank is the centre of attraction on the Hornet; it gets sharp looking plastic cladding with carbon fibre-finish running from the handlebar to the seat. And it does a good job of making it look larger than it really is too. In the middle of the flat set handlebars is an all-digital speedometer borrowed from the Unicorn 160. The same aggressive styling flows into the rear of the CB Hornet 160R. It has a single unit seat with a raised pillion seat and it also gets a rear monoshock. The highlight of the tail end is an X-shaped LED tail lamp. A stubby exhaust adds to the aggressive appeal of the Hornet 160R and beefy tyres have been added to keep the same effect.

RIDING AND HANDLING Switch on the ignition and thumb the starter button to bring the Hornet 160R to life. The sporty Hornet uses the same 162.71cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine you’ll find in the CB Unicorn 160. However, the engine has been fine tuned to churn out a healthy 15.7bhp and 1.5kgm of maximum torque. This makes it more spirited than the Unicorn, especially when it comes to low end acceleration. Thankfully, it has retains the smooth refinement that Honda engines are known for. To further enhance the riding experience better, the smooth engine is coupled with an equally smooth 5 speed gear box. Riding and handling are Congruent to the aggressive design sense of the Hornet. Despite an upright riding stance, the slightly rearset footpegs maintains the sporty nature of the CB Hornet 160R. Weaving in and out of traffic is a breeze, but it still isn’t something we encourage you do with reckless abandon. Because it has good low end acceleration, it further adds to the city riding experience. On more open roads, the 160cc engine performs well. It pulls with vigor and you get linear power through the revs. It performs especially well in the mid rev ranges. The riding position inspires confidence in you, even when you set yourself out to carve corners. It rides on telescopic forks up front in conjunction with a box-section

To be honest, Honda motorcycles that come to Nepal through India have always been reluctant to take risks in terms of how they design their motorcycles. 36

swingarm-mounted monoshock unit at the rear. The suspension does a great job of soaking up the undulations on the roads. Stopping power comes from a Nissin sourced 276mm petal disc unit on the front, while the rear gets a 130mm drum brake unit. Combined with the fat tyres that it gets, it does a good job of slowing down and stopping the bike. A major reason of this is because they want to appeal to more mature riders who are a major target segment for Honda.

It is a well rounded machine that has been able to create excitement in a competitive segment.

Things are different with the Honda CB Hornet 160R. This is a mean looking machine with proper masculine appeal. Considering the fact that stocks have been sold out, it seems that they haven’t lost

Shiwaj Neupane is a laid back person, someone with whom you could enjoy a nice conversation over a cup of coffee or a chilled beer. He is an energetic young man who is currently working as the Assistant Director of Ambe Group, a well known juggernaut in the industry. The company operates big names which include the likes of Ambe Steels, Ambe Cement, Ambe Housing, Metro Housing, Yum Yum noodles, official distribution rights of Lava Mobile Phones, some sort of clinker project, and a number of other things in which we quickly lost interest. What really sparked our fancy was what he had parked in his garage. With a lineup of drool worthy machines in his garage, we decided we would pay him a visit and learn more about it.

AL: Tell us about your rides. SN: I currently have a Honda CRV, Toyota Fortuner, and a Mercedes GLA. And I also have a Yamaha FZ. AL: Now that’s an amazing line up any motor-head would envy. Which one do you drive the most? SN: I almost always take the GLA. AL: How did you end up getting the Merc? SN: My family was looking forward to getting a car for our home. We ended up getting in touch with the people at Kishore Gears Pvt. Ltd who asked us to come over and check out their new shipment of GLAs. And it is an amazing vehicle, so it didn’t take much convincing to get to a decision.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AL: So you weren’t looking to get the Mercedes GLA? SN: No, not right away. Of course, I always wanted to own a Merc, but I wasn’t planning on getting one this soon. But things fell into place and now that I have it and drive it, I don’t think I would go for anything else. AL: What do you prefer more? Bikes or Cars? Why? SN: To be honest, it depends on the situation. If I need to get somewhere fast and I don’t have to travel too far away, I prefer the motorcycle. It’s just easier that way. Otherwise a car is more convenient. AL: Hatchbacks, Sedans or SUVs? SN: SUVs, especially for Nepal. A sedan is nice for special

AUTOLIFE MAY 2016 49

occasions, but considering the potholes and driving culture in Nepal, an SUV is the perfect vehicle to drive around every day. AL: Which was the first car that you drove? SN: The first car I officially drove was a Toyota. I think it was a Corolla, I forget. But I’ve been told that I took the family Pajero out on a drive when I was five years old. I don’t remember it, but I ended up taking my cousins out on a very short joy ride. I only got as far as the garage wall. AL: How did you learn how to drive properly? SN: We had a driver, his name was Ram dai. We were close buds when I was a kid so he taught me a few things and let me drive a little too. AL: Do you have a particularly memorable experience you’ve had in in a car or motorcycle? SN: This incident is memorable for all the wrong reasons. I had just gotten my Mercedes GLA out of the showroom, it was spanking new. I was out with my brothers; we had gone for a swim at

50

AUTOLIFE MAY 2016

Gokarna. Someone suggested we go to Flavors Café in Boudha to get something to eat but getting there a colossal pain. The path to the café was narrow and it was difficult to navigate. And motorcycles came a little too close to comfort. I regretted taking my brand new car there. It was one of the most stressful drives of my life. AL: What would you say is your dream car? SN: I’d love a Rolls Royce, but I’ve fallen in love with the Mercedes. You drive it and you know you are inside a splendid piece of machinery. I’d definitely love another Mercedes. AL: Which automobile marquee would you like to see in Nepal next? SN: I’d love to see the Audi here. AL: Where do you think is the best destination to drive/ride to in Nepal? SN: My Uncle went to Lomanthang and he said it was worth a trip. I’d love to drive up there. AL: What are the worst and best things about driving In Nepal? SN: I can’t think of anything good to say

about driving in the city at the moment; I have plenty of complaints though. The way people ride motorcycles is abysmal, and there are surprisingly too many people who have no idea how to cross a busy road. AL: If you were given complete control of the country, what changes would you bring about in the automotive scene of Nepal? SN: There’s a book written by Robert Caro called Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York; it’s an autobiography of one of America’s greatest town planner. I had the chance to give it a read a few months ago and it was great book. Robert Moses plays an integral role in expanding and bettering the roads of New York, but ultimately, it wasn’t able to solve the traffic problem in the city. The solution was in the internal subway system, metro system that was implemented later. I think it is important to focus on better public transport in Nepal, so I’d probably focus establishing a subway system or a metro here.

I DON’T REMEMBER IT, BUT I ENDED UP TAKING MY COUSINS OUT ON A VERY SHORT JOY RIDE. I ONLY GOT AS FAR AS THE GARAGE WALL. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Hatchbacks are the most commercially sold car body configurations in the country; and for good reason too. Considering the size, efficiency, and value for money these

cars fit perfectly into the lifestyles of the majority of people in Nepal. Because car distributors know this very well, there is a plethora of choices in the segment. On this front, Suzuki had their strongest suitor in the form of the Swift. The loveable hatchback was immensely popular and loved by many. It was sporty, large, well designed, and a fine all rounder. The Swift has reigned as Suzuki’s premium hatchback for a very long time, maybe a little too long.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Entering the competitive segment, with what could be the most awaited hatchback in a very long time, is Suzuki’s Baleno. Possessing the potential to be the successor to the throne, the Baleno could be a smash hit for Suzuki. Going by the rapid bookings and inquiries we’ve heard CG|NXT GEN (CG|Motocorp’s endeavor to provide a premium experience) has been getting, it could create quite a stir. We had high hopes for the Baleno, which meant it had a lot to live up to in this test drive. Here is how it fared.

Exteriors The Suzuki Baleno is no tiny hatch. It is the longest and widest car in its class. Surprisingly though, it is also the lightest. Weighing in at just 865kgs, Suzuki insists that safety has not been compromised and the weight reduction is the result of hitensile steel for the platform. This, on the contrary, makes the car 10% stronger than its conventional platform. Suzuki has not styled the Baleno aggressively, mostly resorting to curves to give it its aesthetic appeal. In fact, you’ll be hard pressed to find any sharp edges in its design. The front end has been disguised to look less like the Swift, but it does resemble its predecessor in some manner. V shaped honeycombed mesh grille has been incorporated into the front, but that has left a lot of empty space in the bumper. Flanking either side of the bumper are swept back HID projector headlamps with LED daytime lights. A massive Suzuki badge sits on the grille and fog lamps are housed inside large air dams on the bumper. Its large presence is more pronounced when you look at it from the side. The Baleno has a rounded shape without a very prominent AUTOLIFE MAY 2016 53

ONCE AGAIN, IT IS NOT AN EXTRAVAGANT AFFAIR OF ANGLES AND EDGES BUT A MORE TASTEFUL BLEND OF CURVES THAT MAKE UP THE REAR.

shoulder line but a defining character line running across the lower portion of the doors. A-pillars have been blackened, door handles get chrome finishes, and the ORVMs get integrated indicators. The top of the line Alpha runs on 16” alloys. Although it does have a 170mm clearance, it is extremely surprising that there is no underbody protection. The body shape tapers well into a very nicely designed rear. Once again, it is not an extravagant affair of angles and edges but a more tasteful blend of curves that make up the rear. The rear windshield has a significant curve under which a chrome strip runs its entire length. The LED tail-lamp cluster are also pretty simple.

Interiors and Features Push the request sensors on the front door handle to step inside the Suzuki Baleno. The keyless entry & go system allows you to do all this without having to take your keys out of your pocket. Inside, the cabin is spacious for the front passenger. Although the beautifully sloped roofline and a sharply angled c-pillar give the appearance of the Baleno a significant boost, it compromises on the rear headroom of passengers. It is an all black affair with silver and chrome accents on the dash and controls; beige has been worked into the upper half of the cabin. The three spoke steering wheel, which the Baleno gets from the Ciaz, is leather covered and nice to hold. Audio and telephony buttons are integrated into the steering wheel. The driver’s seat gets height adjustment and, with the steering wheel’s four-way adjustability. The instrument cluster gets a tachometer on the left, a 4.2” colour TFT MID in the middle and the

speedometer on the right. The MID offers the usual data: real-time & average fuel economy, distance to empty counter, temperature & time etc. Uniquely, it also shows you the power & torque being used (pictures below). Various settings (security, lights etc.) can be tuned via the MID. Entertainment duties are undertaken by the Smartplay Infotainment system where a 7” touchscreen with USB, AUX, SD card and Bluetooth connectivity plays the star. The touchscreen doubles as a reversing camera. There is plenty of storage spaces in the car and an impressive boot-space of 339liters, second only to that of the Jazz.

Performance Remember, we’re talking about the possibility of the Baleno proving to be a worthy successor to the Swift which was one of the best hatchbacks to drive. The bar was set high and the Baleno was up for the task.

THE BAR WAS SET HIGH AND THE BALENO WAS UP FOR THE TASK.

Powered by a 1197cc 4 cylinder K12 petrol engine, the same one you find in the Swift, the Baleno is a delight to drive. It produces 83 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 115 Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm which translates well when you take it around the city. However, because it weighs so little compared to others in the class, the power to weight ratio is a massive advantage. The combination of Baleno’s light weight and Suzuki’s well engineered K-series engine makes it easy to drive in traffic and a lot of fun when the tarmac opens up. Steering is light but not so much that you don’t receive any feedback at all. It maintains good composure around corners and is stable on the highways. You won’t find yourself struggling to get to triple digits and maintaining it. It has a well weighted clutch and a buttery smooth gearbox. The dead pedal provides good function and is useful in longer drives.Front visibility is very good and the IRVM has an auto-dimming function. Rear visibility could be better since the window area is small and over the shoulder visibility is slightly hampered. For anyone doubting the safety aspects, in retrospect of its extremely light weight, the hi-tensile steel claims to be 10% stronger than the contemporary platform, and ABS and dual airbags come as standard.

Verdict Suzuki’s Swift was extremely popular, and rightfully so. It was a great little all rounder. But it has been here for quite some time and people are expecting something exciting from Suzuki. The Baleno ticks all the boxes in terms of potential to become the next big thing for Suzuki. Although not as stylishly designed as the Swift (in its time), the Baleno is not bad to look at. In fact, it has a sublime demeanor which makes it standout despite its subtle aesthetics. The Baleno’s road presence is very good and although you might not turn too many heads, you’re sure to receive a courteous nod or two. What it lacks in exterior appearances, it makes up for in drivability and performance. There won’t be many dull moments with the Baleno. Now, we’re not saying it’s a scorching fast hatchback that will have you holding on to dear life, but it is a pleasant car to drive in the city and interesting enough to keep things exciting on the highways.

There is very little to keep against the Baleno, and it seems that it is about time the Swift gracefully steps down from the throne for the new successor.

AUTOLIFE INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW WITH

DANTE RICARDO BUSTOS Benelli Motorcycle’s Marketing Director for Americas, Asia and Africa Regions 62

AUTOLIFE MAY 2016

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

K

KTM International Trading Nepal officially launched Benelli motorcycles in Nepal on the 23rd of April 2016 at a grand launch at the Annapurna Hotel. The Italian motorcycle brand has been around since 1919 and it was exciting to see it being formally introduced into the Nepali market. We were there on the scene where we had the chance to talk with Dante Ricardo Bustos, the Marketing Director of Americas, Asia and Africa Regions. We had a chance to talk to him regarding the strategies and expectations of Benelli Motorcycles in the new market. Here are the excerpts. AL: How is the Benelli doing in Nepal? DRV: This is the first time for us in Nepal and we think this is the perfect time for it.. . The launch of the TNT 300 in Europe led to a lot of positive response and that put Benelli in a different position. In Europe we are in the top 10, in Thailand we are Number 2 in the 300 cc segment and we are doing pretty well in other markets too. So we were waiting to reach up to this level of performance until we reached Nepal because Nepal has a huge market of middle –lower displacement bikes which make it hard for Benelli to compete. Benelli is a high performance, high displacement, premium motorcycle brand. We normally decide to enter markets when we are sure that we can have good success. So for us this is the right time. AL: What are your expectations from the Nepali market? DRV: Good teamwork is our first priority because we believe that when we enter a market we commit to it for a long term So we are careful about choosing our partners and secondly we expect the partner/distributor to be clear about the work that is supposed to be done to approach our client. This was what we were working on in the past year. Also it was important to solve the issues related to strategies to enter the market and the process of communication plans, the target market, pricing and other factors. So we set up everything in order to start with the best possible. The bikes are great machines with great designs that have affordable price but we believe that professional service and close relationship with our riders is the key to success. AL: So are you working to start riders club any time soon? DRB: Of course. Today we are going to

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

announce the commencement of the ‘Benelli TNT 300 Nepal’ Club. It will probably be the 30th Benelli club in the world. This will be very interesting because via this club, members will be able to interact with other clubs from Asian countries and, who knows, maybe we could also conduct some activities with the neighboring countries. Or at least have very good communication between the fans and the owners of Benelli TNT. This is what we expect, they can also meet each other and create a good friendship and help each other. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy a good bike and a great lifestyle. AL. What other product are you planning to launch here in Nepal? DRV: We are waiting on last year’s technical reports of the test for the new models, so we can’t really confirm anything for this year. We have two new models in the pre-launch lineup in some of the markets; the first one is the TNT 135 which we believe is an attractive, spicy, small, naked and aggressive bike with a very nice frame and strong double discs. It also has new engine technology with twin sparks for 135 cc vertical engine. The main difference is the power of the engine and its vertical design. It is also equipped with high tech LED lights, aluminum footrests and racing parts. Also we developed aluminum parts for stunts and for race. Consumers also have the option of personalizing their machine . What Benelli provides is top quality at affordable prices. We do not just expect to sell in the niche market. We don’t just want to target young riders, but we want to appeal to the greater mass. It is a perfect fit for people who are interested in bikes that are equipped with great features, but not too expensive . The second bike is the Benelli 302 R which has a similar engine with the 300 with

additional features but in a full frame body. We discovered how crazily in love Nepal is with bikes but we also expect to do something different. We need to find a way to start a riding course for racing in terms of safety and sports. This is to make sure Nepal also has its own racing course and classes which will be interesting for people. Also this will help promote consciousness of how important it is to be careful in order to ride on the road safely. AL: How do you see the Nepali market in terms of competition? DRV: We cannot underestimate the competitors at all, we respect them and the work that they are doing. They are doing well but Benelli also has its own strategies and action implementations to approach the riders. We want to be a viable option for the masses. . We are here to be an addition to the available choices, with something different to offer with the advantage of being an Italian brand. AL: Can people expect more high performance motorcycles from Benelli to come to Nepal? DRV: As soon as we launch the Leoncino 500 cc, a two cylinder which is going to be launched at the end of this year in Italy, Europe. There is a chance that Nepal could see it next year. We think that the advantage is that we do not have any limitation except for the training and tools before we launch the new model. Normally we first start in Europe or in some specific markets that we detect any problem, we have engineers and an efficient team to solve the problems. If we start here and there is any problem then we might need specialists. We strongly believe in the first semester of 2017 Nepal will receive at least one or two more models. TRK 500 will come together with the Leoncino. AL: Will Benelli launch premium limited edition bikes to Nepal anytime soon? DRV: Probably in the coming years we might, there will be more information on this later.

We discovered how crazily in love Nepal is with bikes but we also expect to do something different. AUTOLIFE MAY 2016 63

IMS MOTORS ACQUIRES SSANGYONG Korean giants: SsangYong, who appeared to have been pretty sedentary for some time, seem to have found their second wind. IMS Group, a name that has pretty much reigned supreme in the mobile segment of the Nepalese market, will be running things for the Korean automobile marquee under IMS Motors. SsangYong Motor Company is the fourth largest South Korea based automobile manufacturer. Their foray lies in SUVs, which is good news for the SUV loving nation of Nepal. Nevertheless, it also has a variety of model line-ups like Luxury cars, SUVs, Pickup trucks, vans, trucks and buses. To announce their arrival, IMS Motors unveiled their acquirement of the brand on the 11th of May at the SsangYong Showroom, which is located in Uttardhoka, Kathmandu, Nepal. Mr. Deepak Malhotra, Chairman of IMS Group and Mr. Dikesh Malhotra, President and CEO of IMS Group inaugurated the showroom. There was a lot of anticipation in terms of what marquee would be undertaken by IMS Motors, with the likes of Audi and Porsche making it into the mix. However, it was a sensible decision to start off with Ssangyong. Nepal’s automobile

industry is by no means easy territory. The market is rife with competition especially with other Korean Brands like Hyundai and Kia being strong players. Treading cautiously into the market with an already existing brand that has the potential to be improved was a good strategic step. But we won’t be ruling out the possibility of a bigger name coming from IMS motors in the future. Considering the fact that IMS Group has been around for quite some time, and have been performing exceptionally well in the Nepalese market, IMS Motors should do well to elevate the Korean brand to a new pedestal. Nevertheless, it is still a substantial mountain to climb. They have taken a step in the right direction in stirring the interest of consumers. To make matters more interesting, IMS Motors has offered a special offer of gifts through scratch coupons for the first fourteen ‘special’ customers who purchase any of the SsangYong models. The attractive gifts include Bajaj Pulsar NS 200, Samsung S7 edge, Samsung TV 40” and a washing machine. Here are the models that you get to choose from from their stable.

RENDEZVOUS THUNDERING INTO THE NEPALI NEW YEAR WITH STYLE

If your idea of a perfect getaway is to leisurely travel through beautiful landscapes with some magnificent views and a rich variety of exotic locales, Pokhara is the place to head to. And what better way to explore Nepal’s penultimate tourist destination than in some of the best cruisers you could lay your hands on. Thanks to the good folks at Sacred Summits, we had the Royal Enfield Classic 500, with all its might, for the 8th Royal Enfield Rendezvous and Poker Run.

Organized by Sacred Summits Pvt. Ltd, the Enfield Rendezvous & Poker Run is a non-competitive annual motorcycle riding event that brings together Royal Enfield motorcycle riders of all age groups with their friends, spouses and families for a 2 nights / 3 days ride from Kathmandu to Pokhara to enjoy three days of mirth, music and motorcycles. It is perhaps the only motorcycling festival in Nepal where one can see the various ways in which people celebrate the Nepali New Year in style while promoting Royal Enfield’s spirit of motorcycling and biker camaraderie. The three-day motorcycling extravaganza features activities and entertainment and provides the perfect platform to bond over motorcycling and the love for Royal Enfields. Just like in the previous year, the destination for this 8th Enfield Poker Run stuck on to the lakeside city of Pokhara and was set for 12-14 April, 2016. As this was an event meant strictly for Enfielders and classic motorcycle owners, none of us in the team neither owned a Royal Enfield or a classic motorcycle to participate in the event. So this year too, Rabi Dai, from Sacred Summits (Pvt) Ltd, came in to our rescue and were handed over the keys to a Royal Enfield Classic Desert Storm. The Royal Enfield Desert Storm would be our companion for the next three days. With all the costs for the accommodation, participation and bike rental

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

waived, we were all smiles. Although the attendance at this event has grown over the years (the biggest turnover was in 2015; there were 400 participants), 2016 saw a decline mainly due to the perceived fuel crisis. This year the participants turned up in hordes with a total of 240 Royal Enfield motorcycles. Even the participants were an assorted mix of nationalities from Poland, Germany, Japan, Romania, UK and India, etc. Apart from those based in Kathmandu, there were also riders who joined the convoy from Hetauda, Chitwan, and Lumbini. A notable mention goes out especially to the Indian riders who rode all the way from different places such as Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kolkata, Sikkim, Darjeeling, Agra and Lucknow to participate in the ride. The meeting point was set at Tudikhel and by 8.30 am in the morning of 12th April, all of the participants wearing the official event T-shirt had gathered at the venue in their thumpers. There were a few changes in the event this year, one of them was the way the cards for the Poker Run were dealt. To make things easier, the entire poker hand was dealt before the riders began the ride, unlike the previous years when each card was dealt at each pit stop. This made things a lot easier and more convenient. After breakfast, the participants were asked to pick up all the hand of the Poker cards. But Lady Luck

just didn’t favor us today. A short welcome speech by Rabi Thapa, CEO Sacred Summits (P) Ltd and Hon. Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Prakash Man Singh preceded the grand flag off. The Deputy PM greeted all the participants with a welcome speech and stressed on the needs of similar events in the future for tourism development. Following this was a quick ‘Ride Safety’ briefing which was done by the roadcaptain Pramod ‘Goofy’ Shrestha. The riders were flagged off by the Deputy PM and Mr. Meghraj Poudyal Royal Enfield Nepal and escorted by the Tourist Police through the busy city traffic. With Pramod ‘Goofy’

Shrestha leading the pack, we along with 280 participants, embarked on a nearly 200-km-long journey to Pokhara. It was a pretty sight to have the bullet train thundering out of Kathmandu making it probably the biggest thunder ride in the Himalayas. After riding down the windy 20km road towards Naubise, we then regrouped at a nearby highway restaurant. After some light snacking and refreshments by the roadside, we thundered back on the highway. However, just some kilometers ahead, we were informed by the one of the crew members that our rear tire had gone bust. With the highway now opening up and the

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

speed increasing, we were forced to break away from the convoy. Fortunately, a repair shop was just ahead. However, we got stuck in the shop for almost an hour because the sole mechanic was deprived of necessary tools (tire wheel and spanner) to remove the wobbly tire. But, thanks to the much-needed intervention of champion mechanic Md Khursid & co. from Sacred Summits, our motorcycle got ready in no time. We buckled up our helmets and rode nonstop till Mugling, where a tasty Thakali lunch lunch (courtesy of M/S YETI AIRLINES) awaited us at the Rupsi Restaurant. A photo session was conducted at this pit stop. The convoy then moved toward Pokhara, only to make a Red Bull PitStop at Akala Highway Restaurant, Manapang, at a distance of 35 kms before Pokhara. After a refreshing break with free Red Bull energy drinks (courtesy of M/S RED BULL), the bikers regrouped and continued in tandem towards Pokhara before stopping for refueling in Khairenitar. As we entered Pokhara, our rear tire went kaput again. And to our further dismay, we had to bike for 2 kms because we couldn’t find

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

a repair shop. Luckily, we found one and it took almost an hour to repair the tire. We couldn’t help ourselves but grin at the unexpected series of breakdowns. The thrilling Poker Run finally ended upon our arrival at the Fulbari Resort & Spa. We were allotted our rooms and given some to refresh ourselves for the gala New Year Eve celebrated in the evening which was headlined by ‘The Midnight Riders’ – a hard rock band from Kathmandu. After check-ins and a refreshing shower, we gathered in the hotel’s lawn to enjoy the free flow of lavish snacks and alcoholic beverages – Nepal Ice Natura Beer from Sungold Brewery and Ruslan Vodka from Himalayan Distillery. The celebrations began in the hotel lawn, with the band playing a scintillating set of rock and roll songs from the ‘80s. The Midnight Riders and Patrick Wilson set a constant foot-tapping rhythm within the crowd & people totally loved the songs. After the crazy night, a heavy buffet breakfast was in place. We then rode towards the nearby government school, continuing with the

AUTOLIFE MAY 2016 71

tradition of incorporating charity in the event. With support from Millennium Publication, we distributed textbooks, children’s books and sporting goods to Shree Siddha Uchha Madhymik Vidhyalaya,Fhalepatan,Pokhara-15. The rest of the day was then free to chill out either in Fulbari Resort or Pokhara. We decided to retreat in the resort itself. The resort was abuzz with the thumping sound of a few hundred Royal Enfield motorcycles and the friendly laughs and banter of biker brothers. The sun was hot. We swallowed a quick beer by the pool and spent the rest of our day interacting with other riders. We caught up with some prominent bikers who rode all the way from India just to enjoy the camaraderie. Topping the list of people we spoke to was Ashok Naidu from Maharashtra and Geet Singh Bindra from Karnal, Haryana. Ashok started his journey from Pune, India and rode all the way to Kathmandu. The highlight of his ride was the ride itself! He was riding a 1952 JAWA 250. Ashok, being a veteran rider, said “It was great to see the unity, enthusiasm and the passion among the Royal Enfield motorcycling fraternity and events like these strengthen the bond between riders and promote the motorcycling culture. The is a great platform for us riders to share our experiences and interesting stories that we have and we also encourage others to do so as well.” We also spoke to Geet Singh Bindra. Geet, an avid biker by heart, who sold his brand new KTM Duke 390

In the meantime,we also had a chance to meet Phurba Yolmo, founder of Sunrise Rehabilitation Center from Dhulabari, Jhapa. In his conversation with us, the recovering drug addict said “Riding is my passion and I love my bike. This passion has also helped me fight the addiction.” Later in the evening, the much-awaited Bingo and prize distributions took place, hosted by the lively Mr. Patrick Wilson. Enfield Rendezvous & Poker Run is also one of the most popular platforms where custom motorcycle makers showcase their passion for motorcycling through modifications. Every year, custom motorcycle designers showcase their machine at the second day of the Poker Run. For the custom bikes, awards are based on 2 categories – Best Enfield Original Design and the Best Modified Enfield award. The popular custom bike competition received several inspiring

entries. Best Enfield Original Design Award was given to Bijay Thapa of Royal Enfielders, Makwanpur and the Best Modified Enfield award was won by Zero Engineering Motorcycle Club, Kathmandu. The prizes were sponsored by a variety of Wildlife Resorts, Hotels, Restaurant & Bars, Spa, and Adventure Companies. The prizes seemed to keep flowing. The coveted Best Poker Hand award was bagged by Saurabh Srivastava from Allahabad, India. Vickrant Singh from Pune, India won the category of Longest Distance Rider. The Hard Luck award was bagged by a member from Zero Engineering Motorcycle Club. Adele Pennington from UK was named the Best Supportive Lady Rider. The award was received by Rohit Ghale on her behalf. Similarly, Ashok Naidu from Lonavla, Maharashtra, India won the award for the senior citizen category. Although we won nothing, the night wasn’t over yet. The Midnight Riders took over the indoor hall with their covers of ‘80s rock and roll music. The music, beers, the thump of the RE’s, the custom bikes on display which were nothing but a feast to the audience was what comprised the second day of the event. What better way to end the first day of a brand new year. The morning breakfast the next day

officially completed the 8th edition of the amazing Poker Run. And it definitely did not disappoint this year either. The Enfield Rendezvous & Poker Run has come to symbolize the motorcycling culture in Nepal. Every year, we see more people participating to experience the bond among people that share a common passion for the Royal Enfield way of motorcycling at its purest. What started with 22 riders on 12 bikes has grown to become the biggest thunder ride in the Himalayas. It’s where lifelong friendships are born and instant memories created. It also provides a great opportunity to enjoy the camaraderie of riding and sharing stories with friends and new acquaintances. All things aside, we admit that riding a Royal Enfield is not all deprivation and grime, there is a much-heralded sense of freedom with moments of exhilaration. The actual dynamics of riding a Royal Enfield bike is truly different than any other motorcycle. It’s a legacy! We’ll definitely be eagerly waiting for the next Poker Run.

AUTOLIFE TRAVELOGUE

MEMORIES OF A LIFETIME

A travelogue about an extra-ordinary ride to Upper Mustang by BikerzAusNepal

A motorcycle ride to the forbidden kingdom (Lo Manthang) is the undisputed champion of road trips in Nepal. Riding through the fabled walled of the ancient city chasing the shadows of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains makes for a jaw dropping experience; not to mention the awe-inspiring landscape and terrain that makes for a picturesque setting. No wonder it is on everybody’s wish-list. For the same reasons, the biking trio of Ateet Shrestha, Nehal Rajbhandari and Gaurav Sanjel from BikerzAusNepal also had this trip on their bucket-list. The trio recently completed this trip and shared their mind boggling experience with us. WORDS AND PHOTOS: BIKERZAUSNEPAL

A TRAVELOGUE Day 1 So we were all set to roar off on our biking expedition. Decked up in our gear and carrying all necessities, we set off at about 2.00PM for Pokhara. The ride was pleasant as we only had to cover some 180 odd kms. The first day ended with a comfortable stay at a decent hotel. Day 2 The second day had all of us fuming with enthusiasm as it was time to take our bikes for a proper off-road exercise and to their home turf. The route towards Jomsom is notoriously rugged with extreme landscape and difficult terrain that makes for a challenging ride. Thanks to our sturdy dirt bikes, we could do more than 60kms of off-roading in a single stint. Day 3: The ride took a sharp adventurous turn because not only we had to battle the temperature but also brave the dangerous terrain as we moved ahead in our journey. As we rode further, the topography gradually began to change from lush green forested hills to mountain desert-like terrains with fewer vegetation of the green kind. We made our first stop of the third day at the holy place, Muktinath Temple. After spending some time in the spiritual environment, we facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

rode towards Kagbeni. After a fair bit of punishment to our motorcycles, we decided to call it a day at Syangmochen. Day 4: The next day, after re-fuelling our bikes from the reserve fuel bottles, we continued our ride towards the picturesque Lo Manthang. The ride offered much more than expected as we passed through beautiful villages Ghami and Tsharang. The view became increasingly breath taking with every passing kilometre. The quality of roads deteriorated but the views only seemed to get better and better as we rode towards Lo Manthang. But there was much more to come, as we reached Lo Manthang, we were left gaping with wonder. With its spectacular natural beauty, LoManthang is a visual treat for both your eyes and your digital cameras. Nevertheless, it’s virtually impossible to express the joy of ride in words. There are so many options to explore and get lost in the area. Trust us; the ancient city is filled with surprises! Do try it. After exploring the beauty of the hidden kingdom, we returned back to Samar and called off the day. Day 5: Heading back from Samar felt like our trip has come to end. Our first stop was in Jomsom where we visited the Dhumba Lake. We continued riding AUTOLIFE MAY 2016 79

further down towards Marpha, Lete and Ghasa before reaching Tatopani. A dip in natural hot spring and chilled beers was long overdue and we couldn’t resist it. Day 6: The action-packed, high-adrenaline journey had almost come to an end. After taking that much-needed dip, we cruised towards Pokhara reminiscing about the journey. It was definitely one hell of a ride. After the relaxing night in Pokhara, we rode back to Kathmandu with memories of a lifetime.

TRIP DETAILS A bike ride to Lo Manthang passes through some of the most breathtaking and challenging landscapes found on Earth. But by any means it is not an easy ride. Here’s how you can plan accordingly: • THE ROUTE: The routes are absolutely fine! Nominal effect of the shake. But yeah the off roads is surely challenging. • MOTORBIKES: We strongly suggest Dirt bikes, though it’s absolutely possible in other bikes; it’s just the matter of comfort. And ‘Yes’ you can hire motorbikes in Kathmandu. • FUEL: Honda CRF250L has a 7ltr tank, hence, it is manageable. Do keep in mind fuel prices get little higher with the altitude. • TOTAL KMS: 800KM appox (roundtrip) • MAX ALTITUDE: 4000m appox • ITINERARY: KATHMANDU - POKHARA* - JOMSOM* - MUKTINATH - SYANMOCHEN* - LO-MANTHANG SAMAR* - TATOPANI* - POKHARA* - KATHMANDU Represents where you want to spend our night! You can customize your itinerary accordingly but do consider days for acclimatization. • BUDGET: Entirely depends on you. Accommodations/ Fooding isn’t that expensive. Foreigners however will require a special permit to visit Upper Mustang which might increase the budget with $500 or more.

Nevertheless, it’s virtually impossible to express the joy of ride in words. There are so many options to explore and get lost in the area. Trust us; the ancient city is filled with surprises! Do try it.

ABOUT BIKERZAUSNEPAL BikerzAus Nepal was born out of a desire to share the passion and love towards motorcycles. It was when exploring the corners of Nepal that the founders decided to create a motorcycle group to connect with other riders and cherish the motorcycle brotherhood. The idea of this motorcycle group was then taken to Australia from Nepal to form BikerzAus Nepal; thus, ‘Aus’ in the name stands for Australia. The main objective of the group is to socialize and to create a strong bonding amongst riders. Everyone has their own motorcycle tale and interest; whether the preference is stunts, race, endurance or any other styles, hence, the group wants to develop a community where all riders meet and share their ideas and experiences. AUTOLIFE INTERVIEW

“YOU CAN BANK A LOT MORE ON THE ROYAL ENFIELD HIMALAYAN THAN YOUR OLDER ENFIELDS” Shawn Dsouza, Rides & Community Royal Enfield, India

The Royal Enfield Tour of Nepal 2016 team was recently in the capital as a part of their annual tour of Nepal. The RE Tour of Nepal is an adventurous motorcycle ride for Royal Enfield owners which originates in Lucknow, India and crosses the border into Nepal. Apart from the usual participation of Classics and Thunderbirds, the convoy this time had two brand new Royal Enfield Himalayans too. Thanks to the good folks at Sacred Summits Pvt. Ltd, we were lucky enough to see the Royal Enfield Himalayan in flesh in a meet and greet with Shawn Dsouza who was heading the Tour of Nepal 2016 ride. 82

AUTOLIFE MAY 2016

Excerpts Tell us more about yourself and how you got into biking and touring. I come from Mangalore (Karnataka), South India and I started touring since when I got my first Enfield. My first big trip was to Goa for the Rider Mania and I have been in the brotherhood ever since. I even work in Royal Enfield India. Currently I am working towards the Royal Enfield tour of Nepal 2016. It’s been fabulous till now. Is this your first time in Nepal? Yes this is my first time. I came here two weeks ago to check and manage things for the Royal Enfield Tour of Nepal 2016. There

is an abundance and a variety of roads here in Nepal, it’s splendid. When we came from Bhairawa to Pokhara we came across every type of road there is from straight highways to twists and corners. It was a lot of fun. The next 3-4 days we spent travelling in off roads up to Muktinath, Jomsom was amazing. It’s a sort of road challenge that even Ladakh had not been able to offer us. Tell us about the Himalayan and how it has performed? The bikes that we are riding are the first Himalayans to see the roads of Nepal. You can bank a lot more on the Himalayan than your Photo:The Raunak Shrestha older Enfields. performance facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

is better, the engine is more refined and it’s relatively more comfortable. The suspension travel has increased more than double and that is heaven on rough roads. The Himalayan was in its element on the road from Tatopani to Kalopani that stretched to Muktinath. The path has very sharp inclines with a lot of rocks and stones along the way. It’s a challenge to get there on any bike. There were people having spills on other bikes, and we encountered a few too but it didn’t take long to get back up and rolling. It gave space for a lot of error, the 21 inch tire in the front can get through anything and you will rarely feel the hit on the handle bar; it is soft and nice. It is forgiving and you don’t have to be the best rider in the world to tackle challenging terrain. This is a purpose built bike. It is not only for highways or off roads, it will take you anywhere. The design has a lot of thought put into it. Unlike most motorcycles built to tackle off road paths, this handles really well on the tarmac too. Be it water crossings, gravel or stone paths, the Himalayan will munch through pretty much anything. The air intake has been put just below the seat level so you can take it to the same water level. It feels light even in the city and it feels amazing to ride it. It might look intimidating and hard to handle but it isn’t. What according to you is the best part of the bike? Clearly it is the suspension; it’s just heaven. I have eight bikes from different manufacturers at home but I have never sat on a bike this comfortable. None of the suspensions of any of the bikes I own

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

compare to it. The suspension travel is 180 mm and the front is 200 mm and that is massive. The damping effect is very nice; if you have a long travel suspension the bikes keep bouncing but this one does not do that. Despite the high ground clearance, it is at home in the corners. If you want to sling it through the dirt get it to a corner really fast put your leg out and then just gun it. It just inspires confidence. The suspension and the way the bike is flawless. Do you think the Himalayan can be a game changer in the off road scene? Yes, both in the Indian and Nepalese Market. Every touring enthusiast has been eagerly awaiting this bike for ages. People are apprehensive about riding heavy bikes. And if it falls, things might break; if that happens you will be shelling out a minimum of Rs. 50-Rs. 60 k and waiting 3 months for the parts to arrive. But this is a bare naked model and it is built to be tough. The bike won’t put you down; either financially or mechanically. That’s the best part of this motorcycle. How has the overall reception been for the motorcycle in Nepal? The reception has been wonderfully positive. To be honest, I did not think that so many people would recognize the motorcycle. Every time we stopped for a tea-break or anything we did not have to introduce the bike, almost everyone recognized it and I was overwhelmed with that. It seemed like people were waiting for this motorcycle since ages! It is fantastic! I think it will sell like hotcakes after the launch. I think it will be better accepted in Nepal than in India because the daily commute roads are pretty much off road terrain.
