This month, there was little else in the country that took as much lime light as the automotive sector did. With the country’s only auto exhibition, the NADA Auto-show opening up its 10th edition in style with over 55,000 people flocking in to witness the extravagant event at Bhrikuti Mandap. The event was presented by Nepal Automobile Dealers’ Association, managed by GEMS and jointly sponsored by TVS, Samsung Mobile and... wait for it... the Autolife App. Yes, we launched our application in the grandest stage of the automotive market in Nepal. As always, the now annual event was a rev-gasmic extravaganza for the auto enthusiasts in Nepal. The event showcased a wide range of the latest automobiles along with auto equipments, accessories, lubricants, financing and insurance services from major national and international brands in the domestic market. We feel sorry for the ones who missed it and have to wait an entire year for the next one. NASA HONORS AND BIDS FAREWELL Nepal Automobile Sports Association (NASA) organized an honor and farewell program on 27th August. The organization felicitated Rider Bikram Thapa, for qualifying to the second round of ‘FIM Asia Cup Racing Championship’ held at Japan and bid farewell to the drivers attending the FIA Young Driver Training Program, Malaysia. Bikram Thapa was also presented with a cheque of Rs. 10,000 and a certificate of appreciation in the presence of Yubraj Lama (member of secretary of national sports council), Yogesh Bhattarai (Secretary of CPN-UML) and Dashrath Risal (president of NASA). Thapa is also participating in a racing championship in Taiwan next month.

METROPOLITAN TRAFFIC POLICE BRINGS NEW RADAR GUNS The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division has initiated the use of Hi-Tech Radar Guns to keep down speeding and reckless driving. The speed gun which costs about Rs 1.2 million comes with features such as real time data collection, video capture and zoom mode (which enables to get enlarged picture of speeding vehicle) which can be stored and transferred to the MRPD’s server for inspection as concrete evidence.

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPORT UNVEILED This is the new Land Rover Discovery Sport, the first model in the second phase of Land Rover’s three-pillared regeneration plan. It is the first of several vehicles under the family-oriented Discovery sub-brand. The baby Discovery will replace the Freelander. The model features a 5+2 seating configuration just like the existing 5-seat premium SUVs. The tidy SUV will be available in three engine types – a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine with different capacity. The petrol engine will make 240 bhp, while the diesel models will generate 150 and 190 bhp. The engine is mated to a slick nine-speed auto or six-speed manual, four or two-wheel drive transmission. New Land Rover innovations debut in the Discovery Sport, including available Autonomous Emergency Braking and a new touchscreen infotainment system. As part of its commercial launch, the British automaker is holding a world-wide “Land Rover Galactic Discovery” competition, in which four winners will be offered a space trip on Virgin Galactic. The new model will be produced at Land Rover’s award-winning manufacturing facility at Halewood, Liverpool. It

goes on sale in January 2015 in the UK alongside the existing seven-seat Land Rover Discovery.

KTM RC390, RC200 FINALLY LAUNCHED IN INDIA KTM has finally launched the RC390 and RC200 supersport motorcycles in India. The RC390 which is powered by the state-of-the-art, liquid cooled, single-cylinder four-stroke 373 cc engine with twin overhead camshafts, four valves and electronic fuel injection makes 43 bhp of power delivering highest level of smoothness. Similarly, the RC200 comes with a water cooled, 4-stroke engine which makes 25 bhp of power. Both the motorcycles are mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

KTM has given the RC200 and RC390 twin projector headlamps and LED tail lamps. The 100% digital LCD display has everything you could expect from a state of the art KTM motorcycle, including engaged gear, fuel gauge and service reminder information. The compact underbelly, three-chamber silencer is positioned close to the bike’s overall centre of gravity. The RC390 and RC200 are available in India at INR 2.05 lakh and INR 1.60 lakh, ex-showroom respectively. No word yet on availability in Nepal, though somehow we doubt that we will see these machine in mid-October.

The RC series has the same single-piece trellis frame found on the naked Duke. The orange painted frame has been modified to better fit the supersport ergonomics and dynamics. The 390 is fitted with racer friendly Metzeler tyres – 110 mm wide at the front and an impressive 150 mm at the rear. KTM has given the RC200 MRF tyres. The RC200 gets an all-black colour while the 390 is black and white. ABS is equipped as standard on every RC 390, ensuring maximum safe on any road condition. Fitted with ABS brakes, braking is done at the front via a radially mounted caliper and 300mm single-brake disc, while a 230mm disc is fitted to the rear. When taking the RC to the racetrack, the ABS can be turned off. However, RC200 will not receive ABS to keep costs affordable. A brand new steel fuel tank with 9.5l capacity (including 1.5l reserve) has been developed for the RC series.

DATSUN GO Datsun premiered at the 2014 NADA Auto Show by showcasing the Go hatchback, which is the first product for Datsun since its worldwide relaunch. The Go is based on the Nissan Micra’s V-Platform, and even comes powered by the same 1.2-liter three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 68 ps at 5,000 rpm and 104Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. The car has an ARAIrated efficiency at 20.63 km/l. The hatchback measures 3,785 mm in length, 1,635 mm in width, 1,485 mm in height with a 2,450 mm wheelbase. A look at the interiors shows that the car has a dash-mounted gear and the dashboard has a clean and uncluttered layout. The instrument consists of an analogue speedo and a digital tacho and fuel gauge. The front seats have fixed headrests. From its distinctive front grille to its

The Suzuki Celerio was recently unveiled in Nepal at the NADA Autoshow 2014. The Celerio is based on the Suzuki A-Wind concept, which was unveiled at the Thailand Motor Show back in November '13 and replaces the A-Star. Manufactured and exported from the Indo-Japanese automakerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plant in Gurgaon, the car comes with one engine and two transmission options. We put the Suzuki Celerio through thick and thin to see if it has what it takes to be a success in the Nepalese market.

EXTERIOR The Celerio effortlessly invites compliments. Curves make a car and the Celerio has them flowing in and out in a stirring new design that Suzuki calls CICO Styling i.e. ‘Curve In Curve Out’ styling. From certain angles, you will also notice the similarity to the Zen Estilo and Alto 800. The car looks good with the large chrome strip in the front and sharp aggressive headlights. The Celerio measures 3600 mm in length, 1600 mm in width and 1560 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2425 mm. The Celerio is a slightly taller hatchback yet its design is proportionate for a hatchback standing high. Overall styling is clean and neutral. The pull type door handles give it a nice touch and also feel good to use. The LXi and VXi trim don’t come with body coloured rear view mirrors and door handles while the ZXi also gets turn indicators on the rear view mirrors. INTERIOR Suzuki has done a fabulous job with the interiors of the Celerio. Compared to the A-Star, there is a massive leap in terms of dashboard design and that’s solely because the company has lifted interior bits from its flagship hatchback. The U-shaped centre console houses an integrated audio system with USB, AUX, CD, etc with manual AC controls. The dashboard has dual tone black and beige with neat contrasting silver inserts around the centre console and side AC vents. 40

The Celerio has decent space inside the cabin and the company has managed to squeeze a lot of interior room. The gear lever is close to the dashboard liberating space near the handbrake and the doors have decent sized pockets too for additional storage. Suzuki has also given a much better boot space of 235 litres in the Celerio. A generous amount of light comes into the cabin and things don't get claustrophobic at all. These factors combined make the Celerio feel acceptably roomy. Rear legroom is decent and headroom is in abundance even for a sixfooter. The Celerio uses fixed headrests on all seats that hamper comfort at the rear although the front seats are quite comfortable. The rear seats can be either dropped completely or can also be split in 60:40 arrangements. All in all it strikes all the right cords for an anticipating buyers in this segment. It clear that the recent car buyers in the local market pick the one thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s practical yet also stands as a symbol of their status. On that note the Celerio should be one of the favorite picks for the targeted buyers.

PERFORMANCE The Celerio's light kerb weight of 830 kilos results in peppy performance. We drove the Celerio on highways & fast corners alike, and it handled them competently. By no means does the car feel slow or sluggish, in both Manual and Auto Gear Shift guises. The Auto Gear Shift however was more fun to drive than the manual transmission. The car feels as if it was designed for the AMT and the Manual transmission was an add-on later. The Celerio comes with Mcpherson Struts with coil springs in the front with coupled torsion beam axle with coil springs at the rear. The car handles really well and absorbs all the harshness and bumps on the roads pretty well. The steering is accurate and well weighted even at high speeds. The car has been designed keeping city driving in mind and did not touch any of the speed bumps even the large ones.

NADA AUTO SHOW 2014 The 10th edition of the NADA Auto Show which ran from 3-8th September was presented by Nepal Automobile Dealers’ Association, managed by GEMS and jointly sponsored by TVS, Samsung Mobile and Autolife App. The show was inaugurated by the President of NADA, Mr. Shekhar Golchha along with the Finance Minister of Nepal Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat, who appreciated the initiative of the association to uplift the overall automobile sector by organizing such events. He further assured that the government would create a better environment for the automobile industry to grow further.

Suzuki Motorcycles, Royal Enfield and Nissan made a delightful presence following their absence last year. However, foreign brands like Mitsubishi, Mazda, Subaru and MV Agusta were missed at this year’s NADA auto expo. The expo venue was properly designed to accommodate every exhibitor with comfortable display spacing which provided the show an international feel. The enthusiasm of the companies could be seen from the lavish efforts they had made to brand their stalls and highlight their products.

Bajaj only had three of their motorcycles on display; Pulsar 200NS, Pulsar 180 and Pulsar 150. Interestingly, their stall setup was based on the company’s ‘Pulsar Dareventure’ theme. The Pulsar Dareventure is an upcoming bike adventure reality show only open to Bajaj Pulsar owners. The concepts SS400 and CS400 would have been exciting to witness at their exhibit area.

Daihatsu had an outdoor setup with just one product. The usual Terios marked the company’s presence at the show.

TATA Tata’s stall was popular amongst the visitors, thanks to the stately presence of Tata Safari Storme Ladakh Edition concept. The Storme Ladakh Edition is just a concept version of the Safari Storme with a host of modifications. With its brawny looks, the Storme Ladakh edition concept was a favourite for many thronging at the stall. Alongside this concept were the Tata Indica eV2 CR4, Vista, Manza and the all-new Nano Twist in the exhibit area. The Nano Twist was also seen hanging at the stall. Tata’s stall also had glamour models entertaining the crowd with various dance performances at frequent time intervals under the separate ‘Manza Moves & Masti’ section opposite the pavilion.

HYUNDAI Like last year, Hyundai had one of the best styled exhibition areas. Hyundai showcased the Grandi10, Xcent sedan, i10, Eon and Verna in their eye catching and well-designed exhibition stage. No doubt, the Xcent sedan and Grand i10 hatchback were the show stealers in Hyundai’s stall. HERO MOTOCORP Hero Motocorp had their entire refreshed line-up at the show. The company unveiled a total of five new products at the show. The company revealed the revamped Karizma ZMR, Karizma R, Xtreme Sports, Splendor Pro Classic café racer, Pleasure scooter and the new Splendor iSmart at the show. Lots of people could be seen hovering around their exhibit area, thanks to the Karizma series and the impressive Splendor Pro Classic café racer.

Owner’s Review I had been searching for a new car a year back and I wanted a sedan. I was unsure about what I should get, so I started visiting different automobile showrooms, did a little research on my own and talked to a few people. During that period, I also visited the Skoda showroom, I explained my requirements to the employees there, like I did in every other showroom I visited, and they showed me the Skoda Rapid and told me it matched by requirements. I must say, as soon as I saw the car I fell in love with its looks. After a little more research about the car’s engine, control, power etc., I decided to buy it and I think I made the right choice. The interior of the car is equally good looking. The seats are extremely comfortable and the whole set up is very spacious. I have taken this car for a few long road trips and I must say there wasn’t any time I felt uncomfortable. In addition to all this, the car has an extremely powerful engine and also has the capacity to bear the damaged roads of Kathmandu.

Everybody loves Italian cars. Italian cars are commonly renowned for luxury, sporty design and its capacity to empty your wallet but that is no longer the case thanks to FIAT. Founded by Giovanni Agnelli, F.I.A.T (Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino) has a rich history as it has clenched a superior role in the automotive industry since its establishment in 1899. From the juncture they first appeared on the automotive market, Fiat’s products have been extensively recognized worldwide. During its more than century-long history, Fiat has also manufactured railway engines and carriages, military vehicles, farm tractors, and aircrafts. In about 1900, the first FIAT branded automobile rolled out the factory, 24 of the FIAT’s 4 HP also known as 3 ½ CV were out of the assembly line which had a 697cc boxer twin engine. As time went by, the company gained in popularity and although it was becoming bigger by the day it was until 1910 that Fiat became the largest automotive company in Italy. Despite such accolades, the company continued its lengthy development and

Suzuki has never been as aggressive as their competitors in the two wheelers market, but things are changing. They began with refreshing their scooters with the introduction of the Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and moved on to their premium commuter bikes. They made a half hearted attempt with the GS150R, which was a pretty decent motorcycle, but still didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t create any massive waves. We doubt this will be repeated with the new Suzuki Gixxer 150 because this one is a screamer. With mechanical inputs from the MotoGP GSX-R engineers and designs inspired from the same series, Suzuki means business. The premium commuter bike market might be looking at a new contender for the throne. The street sport bike tagline seems befitting to this handsome machine, and after seeing it at the NADA Auto-expo, we knew we would be getting our hands dirty soon. FEATURES AND STYLING

exhausts might be the first things you notice, but on closer inspection you will see that the attention to detail is impeccable. As expected from a brand like Suzuki, the fit and build of the entire machine is up to par. Put your keys into the ignition and the digital console lights up displaying a cascading rev counter right at the top, a large and easy-toread speedometer, two trip modes, a gear position indicator, and other telltale lights all nicely fitted within a compact LCD display. It also incorporates a rev redline warning flasher that we loved to light up any chance we got. The tank, although small, has a meaty feel to it. It incorporates wide grooves and indents that perfectly assist in leveraging and gripping the tank with your thighs. An unhinged fuel cap, which can be burdensome at times, might be the only glitch in this beautifully designed tank. On any other bike, the large protruding headlight might have been out of place, but on the Gixxer it somehow fits in. The grips are comfortable with easy to access to the engine-kill switch, indicators and horn. AUTOLIFE September 2014 67

The fat tyres with Hayabusa inspired six spoke wheels; robust fork and rear suspension accentuate the design of the Gixxer. But the showstopper is the twin port exhaust which is the first in a sub250cc bike from Suzuki. Like the rest of the motorcycle, the tail end of the Suzuki Gixxer is short but is designed to look its best. With an appealing tail light piece and fibre made grab handles in between to save weight, the rear of the motorcycle is as impressive as the front. PERFORMANCE

The moment you press the ignition switch, the Suzuki Gixxer eagerly comes to life. Suzuki has dubbed it the street sports bike and the Gixxer vouches for the claims as soon as you put it to gear. It gets off its mark in a hurry and the digital speedometer tallies up in similar fashion. Powered by a Suzuki-built four-stroke, 155cc, SOHC and CV carburettor fed powerplant, the Gixxer puts out a healthy 14.6bhp at 8,000rpm, and 1.43kgm of peak torque. In simpler terms, this little screamer pulls like no other in the segment. The throaty noise resonating from the engine tempts you to rev the engine to its limit at every gear; it turn the Gixxer responds with smooth enthusiasm. Gearbox performs seamlessly with transmission that’s smooth as butter. Although gear ratios fall on the taller side, the short powerband with the 10000 rpm redline makes it appear to have short gear ratios. Overall, the engine remains refined and 68

unstressed throughout. Acceleration and midrange is where you will have all the fun. The riding position is not very demanding. Slightly rear footpegs and low handlebars aren’t uncomfortable for city riding yet provide the sporty spirit in open roads as well as winding tarmac. The Bybre front disc has a bit of a bite which helps stop the machine on a dime. Rear is a drum unit and works very well and is calibrated in a sense not to lock up despite hard braking. Accompanied with massive tyres and 41mm front forks the Gixxer ticks all the boxes when it comes to stability and mid corner balance. VERDICT Suzuki has an amazing machine at hand. The power delivery is seamless and ranks amongst the best in the segment. Add to it the amazing spot on stability and braking, the Gixxer is a very capable and encouraging motorcycle that will urge you to push yourself on the motorcycle. Although small in stature, the Suzuki Gixxer thoroughly gives out a big bike feel. The Gixxer surpasses the levels set by its predecessor by a long shot and has set the bar high in the premium commuter motorcycle market. The pricing is also very satisfying which might just give the Gixxer a major upper hand. This all rounder might have brought the Suzuki moniker back to life in the Nepali market.

Mountain biking is amazing fun for us at AutoLife. It is a welcome change from the engine powered beauties we test ride. On this particular day, the sun was shining bright and Mother Nature had decided to take it easy with the heat and humidity. So we dropped by at Epic Mountain Bikes and asked the good folks there to give us a hot, fun bike that would befit that beautiful day. They introduced us to the youngest member of the Commencal family: Meta HT SX. And they threw in Chris Keeling for good measure.

FEATURES AND STYLING The Commencal Meta HT SX looks like a proper hard tail mountain bike with looks to kill, but it has stayed true to the basics. Its 6066 high end aluminum frame comes in a hot pink hue that demands attention. The geometry boasts a low center of gravity and its 5 year warranty suggests that it is also super strong. Top tubes route the stealth cables under it to keep the entire appearance neat and tidy. Up front the bike has XFUSION velvet RL forks with 140mm travel with air spring system to easily adjust sag according to the riderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hand size. A 50mm Alpha stem in a black matt finish stands out beautifully with the pink and provides an aggressive enduro feel without compromising on the comfort. The triple-butted high-end alloy 750mm Alpha handlebars with laser marks to help find the right handlebar orientation as well as place the grips, shifters and brake levers optimally. The main attractions at the rear are the 420mm short chainstays and the 66.5Â° standard ISIS bottom bracket. The BB drops

30mm below the already low 26 inch wheel’s axles which promise better stability, nicer braking, and nicer climbing on steep stuff. Of course those claims were put to the test. PERFORMANCE To test the youngest Commencal, we got the young Nepali cycling sensation Chris Keeling to push the limits of the Meta HT SX. Hard tails are more demanding in nature, and that’s what makes it fun. This is the case with the Meta HT SX, taken a step further. With a 1x9 speed drivetrain you’re left wishing for more gears on some uphill climbs. However, regularly riding on such drivetrains will help make you a stronger rider. Add to it the fact that you have fewer controls to worry about and less maintenance to do, the 1x9 speed drivetrain does not seem too bad. As it turns out, XFusion Velvet forks are great. It really makes the ride a lot of fun keeping things smooth and buttery. Combine that with a slack head angle and downhill trails are even better to come across. The low bottom bracket ensures better handling and stability. The rotors do a decent job, but you’re having so much fun that you hardly ever want to use them. 76
