EDITORIAL THE NADA ISSUE

T

here aren’t too many events that get us as riled up as this one; the annual NADA Autoshow is around the corner and we’re pretty psyched. As the only autoshow that brings together the prominent automobile dealerships in the country the NADA AutoShow serves as the hub for auto enthusiasts and prospective buyers. This year it is going to be held from the 30th of September till the 4th of October 2016. We couldn’t think of a better way of welcoming the festive season than this (Dashain incoming). On to this issue. This month we test the Datsun Redi Go. The Datsun Go sold like hot cakes and the Redi Go is looking to recreate their success with the Redi Go. For the entry level segment, the Redi GO is a strong contender and likely has the potential to help create a strong market presence.

GENERAL ENQUIRIES

Good news. The Renault is finally here. We had been yearning for it for a long time and it has arrived. The two products it has introduced is the entry level KWID and the extremely popular SUV (compact) Duster. We check out the legendary French automaker’s evolution and have a chat with the General Manager of the distribution Adhir Kumar Shrestha. Also on test is the much awaited Honda BRV, the Japanese automaker’s move into the competitive compact sedan segment. We finally get our hands on the MG6. Morris Garage is in the scene and look prepped for competition. On the two wheeler front is the Italjet Buccaneer 250i. It took longer than expected for us to lay our hands on it, but we had great fun testing it. There is plenty more for you to keep yourself entertained in this issue of AutoLife Magazine. We’re getting ready for the NADA AutoShow, we’ll see you there. Until next time. Cheers

Mr. Pramod Bhattarai

My little brother used to drive a Prado and I would borrow it every now and then, that was before I bought the Fiat Avventura. I’ve had it for the last 7 - 8 months and I’ve been loving it. I did some extensive research before buying this car and it paid off. Due to the nature of my work, I make trips from Mechi - Mahakali, to Hetauda, Dakchinkali and the sorts. I do a lot of driving and the Avventura has been a great companion. I have travelled in it with heavy loads and packing in 5 people and it hasn’t complained. I loved it so much that I have bought one for my brother and even went on to book another one.

to the claims. The front seat folds down to make a comfortable makeshift bed where I have actually slept. It was very comfy. The seat spacing is capacious; a tall person can easily fit in and not complain about his legs not being comfortable. And one of my favorite things to do when I’m waiting around and am bored is to listen to music in it because the sound quality is really good. In terms of after sales service, it has been extremely satisfactory. I get regular routine calls from the service center and they ask me about how the servicing went. In summation, they ask me if I’m satisfied or not, and the answers all has been “I am.” I am very happy with my Avventura and I’m sure others will be too with theirs.

Owner’s Review

I used to own a Maruti Suzuki Celerio before getting the Skoda Yeti. As an admirer of big cars, I narrowed down my search to Skoda because Skoda is a well-known brand. Hence, it was easier for me to opt for the Skoda Yeti. The Yeti is well-known for its design, comfort, safety, engine and storage. And I must say that I’m very much pleased with my purchase.

The exterior is very appealing with its striking crossover looks and well-built architecture. The interior is excellent, however, I feel that the location of AC between the 2 front seats makes the ride uncomfortable for the person sitting in the middle with less space.

Mr Bhushan Sagar Shrestha Sewa Private Limited

What makes the Yeti different from other cars is its easy handling, excellent maneuverability, and satisfying performance. The diesel engine is economical and powerful too. The Yeti delivers a great ride quality, both in city and highway. The suspension system is well-suited for our roads. There are no issues with the power delivery or ride quality till now. However, an extra clearance would have been much appreciated. Regarding the after sales service, I am fully satisfied with the Skoda team. To conclude, the Yeti is a brilliant crossover and I would definitely suggest it to anyone wanting to buy a good looking vehicle.

OWNER’S REVIEW

I used to drive a Kia Rio before purchasing the Tata Bolt. The Kia was getting old and I just wanted a change. It was a powerful machine but I needed an upgrade. The Bolt is power efficient as well as cost efficient and is just packed with modern technology. Plus, Tata Motors now owns JLR, and that really drew me in. As compared with my previous car, the Tata bolt comes loaded with Revotron engine, multi-drive modes and many more stunning features. The ‘Sport’ mode and ‘Eco’ mode are very useful features which ups the efficiency of the engine. In Eco feature, the engine does make a rumbling sound and I reckon it’s due to the low fuel consumption, however, it has not affected the mileage. The Bolt has the capacity to compete with other brands in the range. I am highly pleased with both the exterior and interior. I am also satisfied with the space the Bolt provides. Four adults can easily fit in and be quite comfortable. Apart from a minor issue you might face with the gear box, which seems unavoidable with Tata cars, it’s a very attractive car. The body looks like a crossover and the interiors are very comfortable and spacious. And the performance too is very satisfying for the price point. Regarding the aftersales service, it hasn’t really been much since I bought mine, just a little over a month. So no such problems that need servicing have popped up. However, when there are I call the service center to inquire about minor things that I don’t like, they respond very nicely. I even got some accessories after the purchase and a lot of companies don’t provide such a service. So yes, I would definitely recommend the Tata Bolt to others.

“ THE NADA AUTO SHOW IS HELPING TO CHANGE THE DYNAMISM OF THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY.” - ANJAN SHRESTHA, PRESIDENT - NADA (NEPAL AUTOMOBILES DEALERS’ ASSOCIATION) W O R D S

NADA Auto Show, Nepal’s one and only automobiles exhibition presented by Nepal Automobiles Dealers’ Association and managed by Global Exposition & Management Services (GEMS), is taking place from August 30 to September 4th at the capital’s Bhrikuti Mandap Exhibition Hall. As we gear up for this massive event, we had a chance to interact with Mr Anjan Shrestha, Chairman- NADA, to discuss about this mega extragavanza. Excerpts:

THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY SHOULD BE LOOKED AT AS AN ENGINE OF GROWTH RATHER THAN A LUXURY.

AL: CAN WE GET AN INSIGHT INTO THE 2016 NADA AUTO SHOW? IS THE 2016 NADA AUTO SHOW ANY DIFFERENT FROM LAST YEAR APART FROM THE NEW VEHICLES BEING BROUGHT IN? AS: NADA Auto Show – Nepal’s one and only automobile extravaganza is the perfect platform for automobile manufacturers to showcase their product. Not only automobiles, the auto expo also has different lubricant companies, tire companies, components dealers, banking and financial institutions, all under the same platform showcasing their latest products, schemes and offers etc. to the general public. Basically, the NADA Auto Show provides immense opportunities to customers who are looking to purchase a new vehicle. Customers waiting to buy new vehicles can get all the necessary details under the same roof rather than visiting different showrooms. It also saves the valuable time of customers. The NADA Auto Show is helping to change the dynamism of the automobile industry. As compared to last year, we have more participants this year. This year we will have the inauguration done in the morning so as to provide maximum visibility to the participating brands. Each and every brand that is associated with us wants the best possible recognition in this platform, so we have tried our best to handle it. So, we are trying to do it a bit differently from the previous years and we hope it will end up being better. AL: HOW IS THE MENTALITY OF THE CUSTOMERS OR THE PEOPLE THAT VISIT THE NADA AUTO SHOW? AS: The NADA Auto Show kicks off before Dashain, when the festive mood begins to set in. There is an air of optimism and probably the best time for automobile buyers to make a purchase. And that is probably also one of the reasons the NADA Auto Show is usually a family affair. Through the years, this timing has always been fruitful. Despite a few setbacks that the earthquake and blockade impeded our economy, we’re expecting a good turn-up. Last year there was a turnover of Rs.150 crores and we’re hoping to exceed that.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AL: THE NEPALESE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY HAS EVOLVED FROM A SMALL MARKET TO ONE OF THE MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS TO THE COUNTRY’S ECONOMY, HOWEVER, IMPORT DUTIES AND OTHER TAXES ARE DISCOURAGING THE BUYERS. WHAT STEPS ARE BEING TAKEN TO BRING DOWN THE TAX BRACKET? AS: The Nepalese automobile industry has a vast scope with enormous contribution to the country’s economy. However, the industry is lagging behind due to various factors. First and foremost, the government believes that owning an automobile should be an opulent affair. However, that is not the case; owning an automobile is a necessity. Owning a vehicle is a necessity for several reasons. It provides you a sense of freedom and independence. Similarly, to keep up with the pace of growing economy, people need cars to travel to multiple destinations. Secondly, we have one of the poorest road infrastructures and public transport mechanism in the world. However, instead of increasing the dependency of general public to public transport, the government is taxing the private vehicle owners with heavy custom duties. The government is looking at it from a revenue-driven mindset limiting many people from owning one. This in turn is having an adverse effect on the general economy. We are continuously negotiating with the concerned stakeholders to bring the tax bracket down and make automobiles affordable for all. The automobile industry should be looked at as an engine of growth rather than a luxury. AL: LASTLY, WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR NADA? WHERE DO YOU WANT TO SEE THIS INDUSTRY BY THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? AS: We are lobbying with the government to encourage and establish vehicle parts manufacturing industry. If we can establish this industry, then we can assemble vehicles in our country itself. Once the products start to roll out, the tax rate will automatically go down and a bigger chunk of our population can actually afford their need of vehicle. AUTOLIFE AUGUST 2016 37

AUTOLIFE TEST DRIVE

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE MORRIS GARAGE MG6 WORDS: ANKIT R. TULADHAR PHOTOS: AL TEAM

AUTOLIFE AUGUST 2016

M

Men are visual creatures; we get excited by what we see. And the MG6 is quite the looker! We could not take our eyes of it when we received our test unit in full black! It was just drop dead gorgeous! The aggressive front, the curvy lines and the sporty back had us giddy with excitement. In fact, we were pretty much taken by the beauty of the MG6 the entire time. We weren’t the only ones who admired the MG6, by the end of the day we managed to strain a few necks of onlookers who couldn’t help but turn their heads towards this beauty. Morris Garage, a British automobile marquee, has undergone several ownership changes. The assets of MG Rover were bought by Chinese carmaker Nanjing Automobile in July 2005, subsequently bought by SAIC in December 2007, which now operate a UK subsidiary, MG Motor. In Nepal, Morris Garage is being distributed by SLR Techno & Trade Pvt Ltd. The MG6 sits in between the luxury sedans class and definitely looks the part. But time and again life has taught us not to fall blindly for pretty things. We had to make sure that the MG6 wasn’t just eye candy, and here is what we came up with.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE AUGUST 2016 41

THE EXTERIOR

For anyone who missed out on what we said earlier, we loved how MG’6 looks. The sexiness quotient of the MG6 is off the roof. It’s dominated with sharp and bold lines from the front to back and the fact that it came in black helped The MG badge sits on the center of a slim barred grille that tapers upwards to the hexagonal bi-Xenon headlights. The projector lights follow the direction of the steering to illuminate the roads better. Muscular character lines run from the grille across the bonnet to the windshield. In line to its fastback design, the roof line smoothly slopes onto the bumper. With extended length and nice rims filling out the wheel arches, the MG6 exuded class and sedan exclusivity. Things are kept conventional at the rear with large LED tail lams with integrated indicators. Rear bumpers get a touch of honey combed grills under the rear reflectors.

INTERIOR AND FEATURES

When you enter the car a large seat with curved edges welcome you to its interior. The interior is a bit dark but looks very elegant and classy. Because the exterior of the car was so upscale, some plastic looking parts looked out of place. Unlike the traditional car keys you have to insert the key on the left side of the steering wheel and you don’t turn the key to start it you press it like a push to start button. Once the car is turned on, the 7inch touch infotainment system comes to life which acts as the GPS navigator and the rear parking camera’s display. The car has ample of room for both

42

AUTOLIFE AUGUST 2016

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

THERE IS ANOTHER FEATURE THAT MAKES DRIVING VERY CONVENIENT IN THE MG6 WHICH IS THE AUTO HOLD FEATURE

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

the front row and the 2nd row of seats. The passengers on the rear get very comfortable seats with a center arm rest. The boot is pretty big too and will be able to comfortably transport most of your luggage. Getting in the car is no problem but getting out proved to be a little challenging at first due to that fact that the lock/unlock switch was not present on the door handle. It was situated in the center console of the car. The seats are electronically adjusted to finding the perfect position and are easy to operate. It’s a feature packed affair inside the MG6. One thing that we noticed that was missing was the handbrake, it has been replaced by an electronic button that activates the brakes when needed. If you pull the small lever kind of button on it engages the handbrakes and if you push it down it disengages the handbrakes. This is a very convenient feature that helps in traffic jams. There is another feature that makes driving very convenient in the MG6 which is the auto hold feature, when the auto hold feature is turned on if you come to a complete stop then let go of the brakes without engaging this handbrake it will stop the car from rolling forward AUTOLIFE AUGUST 2016 43

or backward. The system also notifies you when you start the car without the wheel straight. The headlights turn on if it senses that it is starting to get dark. There are a host of safety features integrated to the MG like the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution), EBA (Emergency Brake Assist), SCS (Stability Control System), MSR (Motor control Slide Retainer), CBC (Curve Brake Control), TCS (Traction Control System), HAS (Hill-start Assist System), ITPMS (Indirect Tire Pressure Monitor System), BDC (Brake Disc Cleaning) and USD (Ultimate Stiffness Design).

PERFORMANCE

The MG6 is as good to drive as it is to look at. Powered by a 1.8L Turbo Petrol engine producing 158HP @ 5500RPM and 215 NM of Torque @ 2000-4500 RPM the smooth running sedan switches from classy elegance to pouncing menace in a blink of an eye. We won’t blame you if you’re inclined to chase the horizon on this car but it’ll be just as compliant in transporting you to important business meetings. The car has a DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) that makes shifting gears silky smooth. The automatic transmission works very well but the real fun is when you put the gear into drive and you move it to the right, that’s when the paddle shifters start working. If we haven’t mentioned it before, we love paddle shifters. When you have control over the shifting you can feel the limits of the car and its true potential. The car produces enough torque for you to have some fun on the highways. It remains planted through corners and inspires confidence.

VERDICT

The MG6 starts at Rs. 57,50,000 and the top end model which we test drive costs Rs. 61,75,000. If you are look for an entry level luxury sedan, the MG6 should definitely make your list of options. It looks stunning, is very comfortable, performs well and has a host of features. It is an all-round package which will turn heads where ever you take it.

IT LOOKS STUNNING, IS VERY COMFORTABLE, PERFORMS WELL AND HAS A HOST OF FEATURES

Datsun Redi-GO WORDS & PHOTO: AUTOLIFE TEAM

AUTOLIFE AUGUST 2016

THE REDI GO HAS BEEN RECEIVING PLENTY OF ATTENTION. IT SEEMS THAT THE STRATEGY DATSUN HAVE ADOPTED IS WORKING PRETTY NICELY FOR THEM.

The Datsun GO and GO+ were successes in terms of sales figures; the Japanese automakers couldn’t have hoped for a better debut into the Nepalese market. As we were beginning to assume that things were beginning to slow down for Datsun, , they found a second wind and came back to life with the launch of the brand new Datsun redi-GO. We’ll set things straight right from the get go; the Datsun Redi GO isn’t a pretentious luxury vehicle and nor does it claim to be. Datsun has been offering a value for money proposition that is hard to beat and we should go ahead and expect something similar from the Redi GO. There are many people who are teetering on the decision of investing in a car or sticking to their trusty commuter motorbikes. This includes a majority of young working professionals for whom such an offer could be very alluring. Surprisingly, this chunk of the market is often undermined, with much of the focus going to those who can easily afford a four wheeler or those who can’t afford to get one and have to stick to a two wheeler. Maybe that was one of the reasons that, just like the Datsun GO, the Redi GO has been receiving plenty of attention. It seems that the strategy Datsun have adopted is working pretty nicely for them. We test drove the Datsun Redi GO to see if it really was bang for the buck.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE AUGUST 2016 53

Exterior Datsun Redi-GO pretty much hits the nail on the head in terms of its appearance, especially for the entry level segment it resides in. It has everything that a first time buyer might look for in their first car. In terms of size, it is compact but not so much that it looks like a runt in a traffic jam. In fact it has a tall boy design that is broken up with a plethora of design cues that makes it look far from the generic beginner’s car. There are bold character lines that sculpt the body to give it a very appealing styling. One of the character lines runs along the side profile while the other runs from the number plate grazing the underside of the headlamp, onto the window pane and all the way to the tail lamp. Flanking the chrome bordered hexagonal honey combed grille are sharply designed headlights with silver inserts and integrated indicators; the top variant even gets DRLs on the bumpers. Wheel arches don’t look too big for the front wheels, something we can’t say goes for the rear wheels. Window panes also get sharp edgy designs that are bordered with black cladding which stood out well with the lime green of the Redi-GO we were testing. Angular tail lamps also get indicators integrated into them and help in adding a good design element for the rear of the Redi GO. This here, unlike the GO or GO+ which were very similar to the Nissan Micra, is a brand new offering from Datsun. It is edgy, aggressive, and has a unique design that might just help Datsun establish a separate brand image.

Features and Interior What it lacks in creature comforts the Datsun RediGO makes up for in space and comfort. The tall boy

DATSUN REDI-GO PRETTY MUCH HITS THE NAIL ON THE HEAD IN TERMS OF ITS APPEARANCE, ESPECIALLY FOR THE ENTRY LEVEL SEGMENT IT RESIDES IN. IT HAS EVERYTHING THAT A FIRST TIME BUYER MIGHT LOOK FOR IN THEIR FIRST CAR.

54

AUTOLIFE AUGUST 2016

THE DATSUN REDI-GO IS A CERTIFIED CITY SLICKER. IT IS AT HOME IN THE CRAMPED STREETS OF KATHMANDU AND EXCELS IN THE URBAN SCENE.

design allows even taller passengers to fit comfortably into the cabin. Lumbar support and leg room also score high marks amongst A-segment offerings. The dash gets a beige hue, which does not hint at any luxuries; the feature list follows suit. Three knobs on the centre console control the cooling duties of the AC. S tiny audio system with USB, Aux and radio sits atop the center console. There are significantly many compartments for storage. The gear shift knob and hand brake lever find more conventional places compared to the earlier offerings of Datsun, but the window control buttons wind up somewhere under the gear shifter. That’s alright if you’re expecting your love interest to graze your arm while reaching for the buttons instigating some impromptu electricity on your date; not so much if you’re driving somewhere with your business acquaintance. On the instrument control an analog speedometer tells you how fast you’re going and a digital one displays the engine revs and the running mileage. In terms of safety, Datsun ensures buyers that they have given special attention to the Reinforced Crash Protection Shell body. The driver seat gets air bags but the passengers have to depend on their reflexes and the seat belt.

Performance The Datsun Redi-Go is a certified city slicker. It is at home in the cramped streets of Kathmandu and excels in the urban scene. It has a spritely 800cc engine that Datsun says incorporates Intelligent Spark Automated Technology (I-SAT). This system claims to automatically adjust spark timing in response to fuel quality and power requirement. We’re not exactly sure how that works, but it makes driving the facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE AUGUST 2016 55

Redi-GO fun. In its class, the Datsun Redi-GO holds up its own, but it is by no means an avid overtaking beast. Judging by the super responsive steering, this was made with the intention of carving city traffic. Maneuverability is precise and makes it a breeze to drive in the city. However, it doesn’t feel as confident on open highways and curves. There were times when the power seemed lacking, especially with the AC on. But expecting a car in this segment to pounce uphill while carrying 4 big burly men might have been a little too much. Turn the air conditioning off and it does a mighty good job at that too. Run into some unexpected obstruction and the performance augmented brakes bring you to a quick halt. Suspension is designed with the comfort of passengers and it serves in that respect. Add to this a 185mm ground clearance and the Redi-GO seems ready to take on anything that the cities of Nepal have to throw at it.

Verdict Starting at an alluring price of Rs. 13, 99,000 and topping out at Rs. 18, 49,000 it is definitely serves value for money, depending on what value you are looking for. What the Datsun Redi-GO offers is great city driving experience, utility within the concrete jungles, great mileage and looks that don’t make it appear to be a generic entry segment automobile. The lack of creature comforts and extravagant features is evident but that price bracket justifies what the Datsun offers. For the entry level segment, the Datsun Redi-GO looks amazing, is great to drive and ticks all the boxes in terms of what it promises. The previous offerings from Datsun were pretty much just redone versions of the Nissan Micra, but the Redi Go starts off from a clean slate. It does have a new rival nipping at its heels, one with which it shares its underpinnings, but they will still be hard pressed to match the price that Datsun is providing. Rest assured, the Datsun Redi-GO is definitely bang for your buck.

WHAT THE DATSUN REDI-GO OFFERS IS GREAT CITY DRIVING EXPERIENCE, UTILITY WITHIN THE CONCRETE JUNGLES, GREAT MILEAGE AND LOOKS THAT DON’T MAKE IT APPEAR TO BE A GENERIC ENTRY SEGMENT AUTOMOBILE.

THE LAUNCH OF RENAULT, THE SECOND BEST-SELLING-AUTOMAKER, RECEIVED A SPLENDID WELCOME IN INDIA AND WE ARE GETTING A VERY POSITIVE RESPONSE IN NEPAL TOO. MR. ADHIR KUMAR SHRESTHA (GM - ADVANCED AUTOMOBILES PVT. LTD.)

62

AUTOLIFE AUGUST 2016

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

It has been a busy week for Mr. Adhir Kumar Shrestha (GM at Advanced Automobiles Pvt. Ltd.) with the pleasantly surprising entry of Renault. A marquee that had been a tantalizing prospect gaining massive success in our neighboring nation down south, Renault has been receiving a lot of attention from the Nepalese market. This has catapulted the brand into the auto industry and now heading towards the NADA AutoShow 2016 with a strut in their step, we get an overview from Mr. Adhir. AS RENAULT MAKES ITS NEPAL DEBUT AT THIS YEAR’S SHOW, HOW DO YOU SEE THE NEPALESE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY? What we have heard from the customers and through other sources is that Renault is the most awaited brand of this year and there is a reason for that. It is because we have cars that fit in the entry level segment right up to the high level segment. The launch of Renault, the second best-sellingautomaker, received a splendid welcome in India and we are getting a very positive response in Nepal too. Considering the love for SUVs in Nepal, we are very optimistic of the Duster too. WHO WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOUR IMMEDIATE COMPETITORS IN THE MARKET FOR THE KWID AND DUSTER? Right now sustaining in the automobile industry is very tough. Not only because of all these amazing brands in the market but also because of the situation of roads and other infrastructures in Nepal. This is creating hesitation in people to buy cars which is a major obstacle. Our primary competitors are Suzuki, Hyundai and Ford. They are very good in what they do, and have significant market share. We’re working towards our way onto the top of the list as soon as possible. HOW DO YOU THINK WILL THE OVERALL RECEPTION BE FOR THE BRAND IN NEPAL? WHAT CAN CUSTOMERS EXPECT FROM RENAULT? We had high hopes for the Renault and we are happy with the response it has been receiving. The launch attracted a lot of people and we have been receiving a lot of questions about when the other models are coming. Analyzing from the people’s interest on the brand and also on the models I hope we match up to their expectations. Renault is a brand that promotes innovation and always tries to incorporate something new in their automobiles. It is also the first to come up with the idea of compact SUVs. And I think that is the USP in our brand; people will always get something new in what they purchase, there are new technological advancements happening nearly every week and we try to do that with our brand. So, people can always look forward to finding something new in every other model. WHICH SEGMENT AND TARGET GROUP ARE YOU FOCUSING ON? For Kwid, we are focusing mainly on the first time buyers and there is a competitive advantage

for us because other cars in this price range and segment are turning into taxis and people don’t prefer those brands to be their private vehicle. We want to change that and there is a vacuum that the Kwid can fill. Also, SUVs are very popular in Nepal and the Duster is targeted to the higher end customers. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE STRENGTHS OF THE BRAND? We have an international standard showroom, and our service center will be in operation from October. We have experienced sales people, and trained personnel working in the service department. Our customers can expect amazing customer service. They can also expect high quality communication from our side, if any problem occurs. So, high quality spare parts and customer service is our strength and we will try to maximize our areas of expertise to help gain that loyalty level. ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR STRATEGIES RENAULT IS PLANNING TO IMPLEMENT IN ORDER TO MAXIMIZE ITS MARKET ENTRANCE EFFICIENCY? For market penetration, we know that the growth ratio is very high looking at the Nepalese automobile market. Compact hatchback and compact SUVs are in demand at the moment and to penetrate it we will perform plenty of ATL (Above The Line) and BTL (Below The Line) activity like corporate level test drives and amazing schemes. Most brands do these kinds of things but we are trying to make them as different and beneficial as possible for the customers and also our brand to create a win-win situation. TELL US ABOUT THE AFTER SALES SERVICES AND SPARE PARTS RENAULT HAS SET UP FOR ITS CUSTOMERS. Spare parts are one of our strengths because it is affordable. In fact, the spare parts for Kwid can be listed amongst the most affordable spare parts in the market. Same goes for Duster for which all of the spare parts are easily available which is easier for the customers. So, there is no problem in affordability of the spare parts and they will be genuine and authentic. APART FROM KATHMANDU, WHERE ELSE WILL THE RENAULT BE DISTRIBUTED? We have plans of opening the showrooms outside the valley once we get experienced dealers and salespeople who can match the level our brand. People can expect more showrooms and we are planning for it right at the moment.

Compact SUVs have not been around for sometime now, but soon after its arrival its popularity sky rocketed. Things started with the Ford EcoSport, which quickly became the star child for Ford in Nepal. Soon after, the Hyundai Creta upped the ante and steamrolled over competition with their immensely popular Compact SUV. Preparing to take its place in the mix is another juggernaut, Honda Cars. In a segment that already has a couple of big brand names butting heads, Honda has its work cut out for itself. But knowing the strength behind the Japanese moniker, you cannot rule out their success. Honda’s champion in this competition is the BRV. A much awaited product in the Nepali market, we are glad the Honda BRV is finally here. Will it be able to knock off the reigning compact SUV off its throne? We find out in this review.

EXTERIOR The BR-V uses the same platform as the Brio, Amaze, and Mobilio, sharing more resemblance with the Mobilio. You will find that the Honda BR-V strikes a balance between contemporary subtlety and edginess in terms of design. It does get the urban compact SUV elements like roof rails and cladding.

“YOU WILL FIND THAT THE HONDA BR-V STRIKES A BALANCE BETWEEN CONTEMPORARY SUBTLETY AND EDGINESS IN TERMS OF DESIGN”

From the front the BRV looks menacing with the big grill but as lines flow to the back, the look of the car changes from a SUV to more off a MPV (MultiPurpose Vehicle). With that, it brings into competition something its direct competitors don’t, additional seats that turn it into a 7 seater. The build quality is up to the Honda standards and doesn’t look or feel cheap in anyway. The job of illuminating the roads in done by a projector at each side paired with a reflector light. The top end model gets LED Position lamps and it drives on16 inch allow wheels.

THE MAIN ATTRACTION OF THE BRV IS THE FACT THAT IT IS A 7 SEATER SUV. THE ADDITIONAL SEATS AT THE BACK CAN COME IN HANDY WHEN TRANSPORTING A LOT OF PEOPLE BUT WILL HAVE TO COMPROMISE THE SEATING SPACE AS THE SPACE IS SMALLER THAN THE SEAT IN FRONT.

INTERIOR I (and the team) have always been a sucker for paddle shifters, so we were excited to get into the VCVT(Continuous Variable Transmission) which had those. Although the absence of a touch screen infotainment system was noticeable, there were many things that the BRV got right. Infotainment duties are undertaken by a primitive monochrome display with Bluetooth for music and telephony. . The seats were very comfortable with great support, since we were testing the V and not the VX model the leather seats, leather gear shift knob and other leather elements were missing but if you opt for the VX model you will get a host of premium leather goodies. The main attraction of the BRV is the fact that it is a 7 seater SUV. The additional seats at the back can come in handy when transporting a lot of people but will have to compromise the seating space as the space is smaller than the seat in front. It however will be perfect for children as they don’t occupy a lot of space and since there aren’t any windows in the 3rd row the risk of your child sticking their heads or hands out of the window is reduced as well. But with the inclusion of a third row there is another compromise as well, when the 3rd row is up the luggage space is very small at 223L only. This can be solved when the 3rd row of seats are folded away which increases the storage space to 691L. A smart inclusion was the rear ac vents which has a separate switch to control its settings which is different from the one in the front. Another neat feature were the inclusion of an electronically foldable mirror, which will come in handy when you have to squeeze into a tight space or park the car. With a press of a button both the Rear view mirrors fold.

BOOTS SPACE WITH SEATS SPLITS

PERFORMANCE The BRV is powered by a 1.5L 4 cylinder SOHC i-VTEC engine producing 119PS @6600 RPM and 145NM of torque @ 4600 RPM. The BRV has enough punch to get by the everyday commuting with ease and the claimed mileage by the company is very respectable at 15.4 KMPL for the manual and 16KMPL for the automatic version. The Car feature keyless entry so all you have to do is have the keys in your pocket and leave it there, the car also has a push to start/stop button so there is no need to be fumbling with the keys. The automatic makes driving in packed traffic effortless but when you put it into the Semi manual mode is when you get to experience its true performance. You will have control over the gear shifting through the paddle shifter which will allow you to test the limits of the car. The suspension on the BRV held up pretty well with the conditions of the roads that were thrown its way and had minimal body roll.

VERDICT The BRV is a Fantastic Car in its segment with a lot to offer, but does it have what it takes to take over the crown? Well that depends on what you’re looking for. If you are in the market for a compact SUV make sure to have the BRV in your list of cars. The BRV starts at the price of 39, 99,000 for the base variant and tops of at 53,00,000 for the VCVT model. If you want more features and you are willing to go for the manual transmission than look for the BRV VXMT at Rs 52,25,000, which has the leather and other goodies expect for the auto transmission.

AUTOLIFE TEST RIDE

ITALJET 250i

THE ESSENCE OF MOTORCYCLING WORDS AND PHOTOS: AUTOLIFE TEAM

74

AUTOLIFE AUGUST 2016

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

There is a point in life of every motorcycle enthusiast where he/she dreams of straddling a sporty crotch rocket, crouching down and blasting through straights and leaning through corners. The adrenaline rush is incomparable and it is one of the most sought after aspects of motorcycling for many people. We too lived through this phase, and trust us we’ll still sling our legs over a high performance sports bike any chance we get. However, there’s another side to motorcycling which beckons a different spirit, one that the Italjet Buccaneer 250i exemplifies. The essence of the Buccaneer harks back to the yester years of motorcycling, when it embodied the freedom, unabashed rebellion and at times the therapeutic healing that only a bucking machine on two wheels could offer. We’d been wanting to get our hands on the Italjet Buccaneer for quite some time now and we just got around to test riding the retro designed motorcycle. And here we have it for you.

STYLING

Back in the 70s, Scramblers started out as regular road bikes that were engineered by factories or owners to make them capable of heading off the beaten track. The Italjet Buccaneer resembles the scrambler gene and refines it into a well rounded package with sprits of café racer styling. This is defined by the flat design line running from the front to the back. At the heart of the scrambler styled Buccaneer is a distinctive 60 degree V twin engine commands attention. Built around it is a sturdy frame, with a bash plate to protect the underbody of the engine, and a smoothly sculpted 14 litre fuel tank is put into place. In lieu to the Scrambler styled design the swooping curve of the tank moves into the curve of the cowl. A beautifully stitched flat single seat adds to the overall design of the Buccaneer. The front wheels have been tucked in to help give the motorcycle an aggressive stance. Massive discs are integrated into both wheels which get massive well treaded dual sport tyres. Head lights get a sturdy frame and a small visor is fit atop it that covers the speedometer. The instrument console is a singular analog dial with a digital gear indicator. A circular led rear tail light works in perfectly with the overall design of the Italjet Buccaneer 250i.

RIDING AND HANDLING

Switch on the ignition and thumb the start button and the Buccaneer comes to life with a throaty rumble. Straddle it, cozy yourself into position and switch into gear to get into motion. The handle bars position you into a slight upright position which moves the motorcycle away from an aggressive machine towards a more laid back ride. We were quiet alright with that; in fact we preferred how the motorcycle performed. It was a pleasant change to be able to enjoy a mellower ride. But don’t get us wrong, the Italjet Buccaneer 250i packs a punch. The 60 degree V-twin 249cc SOHC (Single Over Head Cam) dishes out 17.5 Bhp of power @ 8,000 RPM and 19 Nm of torque @ 6,000 RPM. Instead of unbridled power, the engine propels the Buccaneer with linear power output. The torque kicks in early and makes stop and go traffic commuting in the city fun. On more open roads it holds up well, making overtaking maneuvers easy. It isn’t the most nimble cornering machine and is hesitant to lean into curves and slalom through heavy traffic. Braking is crisp thanks to the massive disc brakes up front and in the rear. Large grippy tyres provide a stable ride.

AUTOLIFE AUGUST 2016 75

VERDICT

Possessing a significant scrambler heritage, the Italjet Buccaneer 250 stands out from the crowd. It might not resort to extensively extravagant styling but it finds a subtle balance which helps keep it classy. It is more than capable of taking on the everyday commuting needs, but we see it as more than just that. You get on it, head out of the city and ride onto the horizon; it’s a motorcycle you get on to help clear your head. A motorcycle doesn’t have to be aggressively fast to be fun, and the Buccaneer is the perfect example of that.

AUTOLIFE TIMELINE

La Vie En

Renault If you’ve ever heard someone speak French, you’re lying if you say that you did not fall for them. There’s just an aura of effortless elegance France has. For instance, some of the best things in life are French. French wine, French Haute Couture, French dining, French maids and French kisses. Among them, the most luminous objects of admiration are their cars, and in this category, Renault is a bright beacon.

Oui! Ever since the news of Renault coming into the Nepalese market broke out, it has been taken no more than a rumor. But boy, aren’t we glad that it’s true; they’re releasing their Kwid and Duster this NADA. So pour yourself a glass of Château Lagrange, a warm croissant with unsalted butter and strawberry jam, put on some Edith Piaf and sit down for a history lesson. The year is 1898, a young 21 year old Louis Renault is hunched over in his garage in Billancourt, Paris. After days of working he finally screams: IT’S ALIVE!!! Well… maybe not like Frankenstein did but he must have been mighty proud of himself because he had just made a Voiturette. It was equipped with a revolutionary direct-drive transmission. On the day of Christmas Eve, he awed the crowd of Montmartre as he drove up a steep rue of Lepic. And that very evening, he received 12 firm orders for the vehicle. Together with his two bros; Marcel and Fernand, founded the Société Renault Frères company in 1898. By the early part of 1899, they had already produced 80 cars.

Back then, the best way to promote your car was to promote and win races. The cars were good at racing and Marcel was good at winning them. From 1899 to 1903 races were won and demands went up prosperously. But why only till 1903 you might ask. Well sadly, Marcel crashed and died. Fortune is a wheel, I tell you.

Death is sad, but Marcel would have wanted his brothers to go on. So productions went on. More types and versions with different engines appeared. They introduced themselves in various exhibitions and passed their name around. Besides private cars, they produced taxies and even lorries, buses and 4x4 vehicles in 1906. When the First World War broke out, the French Ministry of Defence called upon Renault to contribute ambulances, tanks, aircraft engines and shells. Their Taxi de la Marne was used to transport 4000 men to the front and this was entered in the history as “The Taxis of the Marne.”

1924 was the year Renault first adopted the diamond logo. In 1929, the Ile Seguin plant in Boulogne-Billancourt outside Paris was opened. The plant produced the prestigious 8-cylinder Reinastella. The brand also presented itself to 49 countries.

In 1940, Nazi Germany rolled in and captured various French factories, and Renault’s were one of them. They were asked to produce tanks for the Nazi army, but Louis refused. However, he produced tanks for them. Various bombardments by the American and English left the Billancourt plant in rubbles. It was only after a few weeks of the Liberation at Paris in September 1944 the plant reopened. However, an air of conspiracy due to the collaboration with the Nazi party sustained and till his death in October the same year, Louis dealt with law suits. After his death, the company was nationalized and owned wholly by the French government.

Under the leadership of Pierre Lefaucheux Renault experienced both ups and downs. Till 1980, there was commercial success as well as labour unrest. But let’s focus more on the cars for now. During the Second World War, a secret project was carried out. That project came to life in October 1948 and the world came to know it as the 4CV. It was the first rear-engined Renault and first French car to be produced in over a million units. It weighed just 560kg, consumed very little fuel and comfortably transported 4 people. It was made in Japan and sold in the USA. In 1956, it was succeeded by the Dauphine. The curvaceous design was up-to-date for that time and it featured everything modern; adjustable seats, heating and automatic gearbox. Three years later, the Estafette, their first vehicle with front wheel drive.

In 1961, the 4L was launched, calling it the “car of living”, and it was quite revolutionary. The idea behind it was a car that could go anywhere. It had five doors, the tailgate could open to reveal a modular space in which the rear bench could be folded down to trnsfor the car into a van.

The Renault 16 was launched in 1965 and when it came out, it was accused for being “too original”. I don’t know how that is a bad thing, but it soon rose to popularity and was honored as the Car of the Year. Half-estate and half-sedan, it was the first compact family car with a hatchback opening. The design was quickly copied by other rivals.

When we think of iconic cars for the second half of the 20th century, Renault 5 comes along with the likes of the Beetle and 2CV. It was aimed at the young female crowd and came in bright colors and stylish interiors, keeping up with the swinging fashion of the 70s. The car took 5% of the French automobile market single handedly and became the best selling car across Europe three years later.

Renault seems relentless when it comes to innovating. In 1984, the world’s first minivan, Escape was launched. It was spacious, the modular seat were individual and swiveling and needless to say, highly appealing. It was a “living room” in vehicle form.

AUTOLIFE AUGUST 2016 79

In 1992, Renault released it’s high end model, the Safrane. This is also the year when the company adopted the angular and dynamic diamond logo we love today. Later on the same year, mixing the words twist, swing and tango, the beloved frog faced Twingo was launched. It quickly became popular among the young crowd and it’s no surprise. Wowing us again, it was the combination of a minivan and a city car. 1996 was the year the brand was privatized. In 1998, it opened two complexes, one at home, naming it Renault Technocentre; and the other in Brazil and they named it Ayrton Senna. The Bazilian complex is one of the main production plants in South America for the group. A year later, Renault took 36.8% of share in Nissan, initiating joint industrial work and establishing the Renault-Nissan Alliance. The same year, it took over 51% of the shares of Romanian car brand Dacia.

When the new century began, Renault acquired 70.1% stake of Samsung Motors and to this day, Renault Samsung Motors produce cars in South Korea. Moving on to 2008, it took 25% of shares of Russian car manufacturer, AVTOVAZ and two years later the concept car Dezir was unveiled. What’s so impressive about concept cars, everyone does it; you may inquire. The reason why this is noteworthy is because this marked the beginning of Renault’s new design identity. The first model to be influenced by this was the Clio IV that came out in 2012.

In 2013, Renault set its foot in the Chinese market, collaborating with Chinese carmaker Dongfeng. A year later, the popular Twingo was revised and unveiled in the Geneva Auto Show. In 2015, Renault revealed another concept car, The Alaskan, a pick up truck with its roots in the Duster Oroch. And in 2016, Renault is coming to Nepal. Now that you know the history of this prestigious car brand, grow a pencil moustache, thrown on your striped t-shirt, put on your beret and tie a handkerchief around your neck and head over to the NADA convention to experience what Renault is all about.
