First, I drove around in a Tata Indica then shifted from car to car and recently have been driving the Hyundai Grand i10. And its been around 1 and a half years that I’ve owned the Hyundai grand i10.
I decided to switch to Hyundai because of the brand value and its brand image. The feeling you get whilst inside the Grand I10 is very soothing. It has a spacious, trendy feeling which I found to be better than my previous cars. That is why I opted for Hyundai. And the service center of Hyundai is also good and have been placed in the major part of the city for the convenience of the customers. They are true to time when we leave our car for servicing which is really convenient.

50
50 years is a long time, in which a lot can happen. If you talk about Nepal, 50 years has made a night and day difference. The changes and development our parents and grandparents have seen during this time is monumental. However one thing that has remained consistent during that time is the prevalence of Honda bikes. In this issue we pay tribute to the automotive juggernaut that is Honda and their official distributor Syakar Trading Company who have an illustrious history of their own on their golden jubilee. For our test rides we put the successor to the iconic Honda XL 185 the newly launched XR 190L through its paces and find out whether it lives up to its name. We also got a chance to ride the new Aprilia SR 125 the Italian pocket rocket which is the smaller version of the highly popular motard scooter the SR 150.And what would an Autolife issue be if we didn’t review a compact SUV? So for this month we have the luxurious Peugeot 3008 which is a beauty not only from the outside but from the inside too. Of course we have other delights in our issue too with the latest entry on our Wishlist being Lambretta an iconic name in the scooter world. We hope they will launch their V-Special scooter soon in our shores. Talking about launches we have the Celerio X and the Intruder both of the products are from Suzuki and are compelling additions in their respective segments. On the horizon in the product watch, we have mouthwatering additions by Husqvarna whose first foray into street bikes with the Vitpilen and Svartpilen looks to be worthy addition in the premium motorbikes segment.

2018 MASERATI GHIBLI LAUNCHED IN INDIA Maserati has launched the 2018 update for its Ghibli luxury sedan. Unlike the outgoing model that was available in a single trim, the new Ghibli is offered in three variants – Diesel, GranLusso and GranSport. The three can be differentiated visually by the treatment of the front and rear bumpers; the latter two also get more equipment. Under the hood, all three share the same Euro-VI-compliant, 3.0-litre, V6 diesel engine as the previous model. The motor, which features AdBlue and start-stop technology, produces 275hp and 600Nm of peak torque, and is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels. On the eco front, the engine is now Euro 6 compliant and puts out 6 percent lower harmful emissions. The body of the 2018 Maserati Ghibli has been optimised and is now 7 percent more aerodynamically efficient. An active exhaust gives the Ghibli a pronounced growl from the V6 engine. For 2018 model year, the sedan also receives a full-LED headlamp setup. It also receives electronic power steering (EPS). The 2018 Ghibli also boasts some level of autonomous driving technology with the Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS).

The Evoque Convertible is available in a single, fully-loaded HSE Dynamic variant, which gets features like adaptive LED headlights, heads-up display, surround view camera, park assist (which includes parallel parking, parking exit and perpendicular parking assist) and Wi-Fi hotspot as part of the InControl Touch Pro infotainment system. There’s also gesture control to open/close the tail gate. Land Rover has fitted the roof with an acoustic inner lining to reduce road noise and enhance cabin insulation. An optional wind deflector, fixed behind the seats, reduces air draft from the rear when the roof is down. The SUV additionally comes equipped with a pop-up roll-bar system that deploys if there is a danger of a rollover.

SEDAN
DEATH OF SEDAN? WORDS: ANMOL SHRESTHA
The history of the sedan dates back to the history of the car itself. When anyone is asked to picture a car in their head, obviously a picture of a sedan would pop into their mind. However, right now the automobile market seems to be heading into a new direction and is leaving the sedan in the dust. Hatchbacks, Crossovers and SUVs are conquering the streets worldwide and automakers are eager to cash in on the boom of these vehicles.
20
AUTOLIFE APRIL/MAY 2018
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
So who or what are the culprits for the drastic drop/decline in the sales of sedans? Its safe to say that there are many factors worldwide and local. For the most part, sedans offered everything that consumers needed. They were practical, had enough capability for city driving, could carry a family, and had ample cargo space. Nowadays, consumer’s day-to-day needs haven’t deviated much from the original formula that was easily handled by the sedan, but tastes have changed. Add in the social aspect—i.e., the sedan is the car your dad drove— and the call of the crossover seems seductive. The old notion that SUVs drive and perform like trucks is fading and now people seem to want higher ride heights giving them more confidence on the road. They want bigger vehicles which offer more storage space and a greater feeling of safety. Another factor also could be that good SUVs are getting cheap and cheap SUVs are getting better. Companies are introducing new and cheaper SUVs that are appealing to the consumers. Long gone are the days when to buy an SUV one must need to pay exorbitant amount of money which were also too big and unwieldy. Now for the similar price of a sedan you could buy a good family SUV that isn’t too big and has a bevy of features more so than sedans that would entice customers to buy it. Hatchbacks have also changed with the times. Always thought to be a car that one would buy if they couldn’t afford the sedans, hatchbacks have stepped up their game and can rival sedans in terms of features and comfort now and all for a cheaper price. It has become a vicious cycle for sedans too, as people are not interested in sedans right now so there are only a few new products in that category and due to the lack of new and exciting products people are not being interested in sedans. If you
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
look through our past issues within the last year in Autolife, we can count in one hand the number of sedans we reviewed. The majority of other vehicles were either hatchbacks or compact SUVs. In the case of Nepal, the roads are also a culprit when it comes to the death of sedan. In the Kathmandu valley, the roads are being made wider but right now there are still roads that are more suited for off road capable vehicles than sedans. Due to the poor condition of the roads, the city has become a natural habitat for SUVs rather than sedans. Luxury sedans or sedans in general are bought for comfort but with the roads we have right now the SUVs are more comfortable for people to drive in. As space is premium in the valley parking and turning radius is also considered by the consumers which the hatchbacks and compact sub 4 meter SUVS are more adept at rather than the long sedans. In Nepal, buying a four-wheeler is a matter of pride and status symbol. In the past, for a person with a hatchback the upgrade path obviously would have been a sedan. However, the trend is changing right now and people are preferring to upgrade to compact SUVs and eventually to larger SUVs. Well-todo people are also buying hatchbacks as a secondary vehicle to move around in the city as opposed to the sedans. So should we start writing eulogies for sedans then? Hopefully not. The automotive industry will only be exciting if there are a variety of vehicles and we are spoiled with choices. It is my hope that the dominance of the compact SUV will jolt the car companies into action and not leave the sedans behind. Doing more of the same will not cut it for companies and their products to survive and only those who push this segment into the future are going to be rewarded.
THE OLD NOTION THAT SUVS DRIVES AND PERFORM LIKE TRUCKS IS FADING AND NOW PEOPLE SEEM TO WANT HIGHER RIDE HEIGHTS GIVING THEM MORE CONFIDENCE ON THE ROAD. THEY WANT VEHICLES WHICH OFFER MORE STORAGE SPACE AND A GREATER FEELING OF SAFETY.

SUZUKI CELERIOX M
Maruti Suzuki has launched the Celerio X, a crosshatch version of the Celerio. The Celerio X is offered in four variants - VXi, VXi (O), ZXi, and ZXi (O). The facelift version looks different because of the new all-black grille with honeycomb maze pattern. The same design goes down to the air dam where it is bordered by a hexagonal body colored frame.
This makeover comes with the same engine that powers the original model. Under the bonnet, you will find the same 998 cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine that churns out 67 bhp at 6000 rpm and 90 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm. It offers a choice between 5 speed manual transmission and 5 speed automated manual transmission (AMT). Upfront, the black claddings have actually taken over the entire bumper. The straightforward headlamp design with chrome upper line has been carried forward as in the previous model however, the Celerio X’s fog lamps get an all new black housings. Although this is a sports version meant to look like a crossover, the unladen ground clearance is still the same at 165 mm. In the side profile, the pseudo SUV elements are in the form of black claddings around the wheel arches and across the doors. The top end ZXI (O) has 14-inch, 6 spokes alloy wheels with 165/70 R14 tires. The lower variants get 14-inch steel wheels with the same tire size. Celerio X has a height of 1565 mm, the length

has been stretched to 3715mm and the width has been increased to 1635mm. For Celerio X, the outside rear view mirror (ORVM) housings and door sills have also been turned black. Furthermore, door handles and roof rails carry a black finish. There is no change in the tail lamps design – it is the same blocky piece that manages to slightly wrap around the car. A subtle roof spoiler with high mount stop lamp has also been carried on to the new Celerio X. Also, the airbag and seat belt reminder are standard only for the driver’s side. Passenger side airbag and ABS are optional upgrades across all variants. The Celerio X is a more competitive hatchback in tune with the changing preferences of new buyers. Its bolstered crossover looks and increased dimensions will attract attention.

The Peugeot brand has been in Nepal for a long time, but it wasn’t operating as a proper dealership with their imports being on and off. But now that has changed, Peugeot has opened a proper showroom in Thapathali, Kathmandu. The Peugeot 3008 is one of the 4 models on offer at the showroom currently and we were given the task to see just how good the French iteration was in the highly contested mid-sized SUV segment.
EXTERIOR
Peugeot have made a giant leap in terms of designing the 3008. Compared to the previous generation 3008, saying that the present 3008 looks better would be an understatement. From the boring simple design to the new futuristic and bold design, it’s night and day between the two generations. Peugeot have made sure that there isn’t a bad angle on the 3008 and it looks absolutely beautiful from all sides. The front of the 3008 has been given the aggressive treatment with a bold new grille with the lion (Peugeot crest) in the center. The body panels cut into the headlights like a fang, which separates the high beam and the low beam units. Running over the head light is the LED DRLs (Day time Running Lamps) which doubles as the turn indicators. While the GT line gets all LED headlights and the allure variant gets the conventional halogen headlights. The side profile of the vehicle is given a smooth flowing design which is contrasted by the 18 inch rims, the diamond cut rims has been shaped as a star with the 5 spoke design. The roof gets a contrasting black finish along with the C pillars to give it a floating look. Moving to the back of the 3008, the taillight is separated into 3 vertical lines each which gives it a very distinguishable look. There is a lot of chrome work done on the vehicle, the front lip, the grille, the doors and the rear bumper are the most prominent along with the chrome exhaust tips.

“
THE PEUGEOT 3008, HANDS DOWN, HAS THE BEST INTERIOR IN THIS SEGMENT OF VEHICLES.
INTERIOR
The Peugeot 3008, hands down, has the best interior in this segment of vehicles. Like the exterior of the car, the interior also has been taken to new heights compared to the previous Gen 3008. Peugeot have tried to pull off an airplane’s cockpit style design which they have managed to do. It is a very driver focused cabin. All the buttons on the top half of the dash has been given a airplane like switch which you push down to activate, while the other buttons are finished in black to blend into the dash. This however makes it difficult at times to locate the buttons with the fact that it is blended in so nicely. The GT line gets nappa leather seats with the heated functions in the front seats. While the driver’s side seats get the massage function and the electronically adjustable seats but the other seats miss out on this feature. The small steering wheel gives it a very sporty feel. The 3008 gets a digital instrument cluster as standard, it looks very crisp with its display quality. The touch screen infotainment system is mounted on the top of the dash. While it looks out of place on most other cars, Peugeot have managed to integrate that with the dash. The black roof was not just done aesthetically as there is an all glass panoramic sunroof and moon roof present on the car.
FEATURES
Peugeot have filled the 3008 to the brim with features and while we can’t talk about all the features in this review, we will mention the ones that caught our eyes the most. Starting off with the approach lights, there is a LED light mounted on the mirror which lights up when you open the door, this is done so that you do not step into a puddle or anything nasty while getting in or out of the car. While the allure variant gets normal LED lights, the GT line gets the Peugeot lion crest illuminating the ground. After entering the vehicle you are welcomed by the big digital instrument cluster which can be personalized into showing what you want. Then comes the massaging function of the driver’s seat, there are different options for which you can select what type of massage you want and the intensity of the massage. My personal favorite was the cat paw,
30

which felt like a cat massaging your back with its paws minus the nails. There is a fragrance dispenser in the vehicle that lets out fragrance as you program it to. On top of that there is blue mood lighting that illuminates the foot well, front door panels, cup holders etc., according to your mood. The view out the back is a little small due to the sloping roof, so in order to eliminate that blind spot Peugeot have equipped the 3008 with 180 reversing camera and parking sensors.
PERFORMANCE AND DRIVING
The engine that powers the 3008 is a 1.6L e-THP Petrol engine producing 165 hp @6000 RPM and 240 Nm of torque @ 1400 RPM mated to a 6 speed automatic gearbox. The gear shifter is different than the ones usually present in other automatic transmission. The shifter unlike the conventional shifter doesn’t slide forward or back, it has to be rocked forward or back depending on what gear you want to engage. There is also an unlock button that you have to press while switching gears while removing the car from parking mode, you also have to press the unlock button while putting it into reverse to reduce the chance of you accidentally switching into the reverse gear.
32
AUTOLIFE APRIL/MAY 2018
But to be honest this kind of shifting gets tiresome after some time because you have to rock back the gear lever 3 times to get it into the drive mode from parking mode. The 165 hp of the car doesn’t feel as prominent in the normal mode as it does in the sport mode. The responce is much quicker in the sport mode and definitely feels more powerful. The exhaust note of the car also got noticeably louder when in the sport mode, I was amazed at the fact of how they engineered a 1.6l inline four engine to sound so different just at the push of a button and thought it was too good to be true. And it actually was because after a while of driving in the sport mode I found out that the sound of the engine was being artificially produced and were being emitted from the speakers. The small steering wheel does give it a sportier feel while driving and gives you the confidence to push it a bit harder. The addition of paddle shifters make it that much more fun to drive when you want to take over the job of shifting gears, the auto tends to shift a little early so if you want to extract all of the 165 horsepower you will have to take over the shifting duty. The paddle shifters behind the steering wheel is fixed on the spot rather than spinning with the steering wheel. The brakes feel very strong and will rock you front and back if you abuse it.
THE VERDICT
The Peugeot 3008 starts off from Npr. 1,13,00,000/- for the allure and Npr. 1,19,00,000/- for the GT line. It is a bit pricier than its Korean rivals and is almost on par with its Japanese rivals while it’s cheaper than the German offerings. With an interior that cannot be compared to others in the segment and a good driving experience the Peugeot 3008 proves to be a real threat in taking over the coveted top spot of the midsized SUVs.

Honda has always been renowned as the people’s choice of brand when it comes to automobile industry in Nepal. As a brand, they have always focused on the perspective of providing best customer experiences. Here, we talk with Mr. Suhrid Jyoti, the Vice Chairman at Syakar Trading Company Pvt. Ltd., about the current status of Honda and where it stands today.
OUR GOAL AT SYAKAR TRADING COMPANY IS TO PROVIDE WORLD CLASS PRODUCTS SELECTED FROM VARIOUS HONDA FACTORIES FROM ACROSS THE WORLD THAT ARE SUITABLE FOR OUR CUSTOMERS IN NEPAL. HOW HAS THE CURRENT MARKET SCENARIO BEEN FOR HONDA?
Honda has been the market share leader in Nepal for the past 5 years and we have been growing every year, thanks to the trust and love of our customers. However, the 2-wheeler industry has seen some ups and downs in the past few years. This year has seen an estimated decrease of 5% in the industry with various problems, especially in the customer financing sector, but like all Nepali business men we are very optimistic and look forward to good years ahead with the formation of the new government and their road and infrastructure development plans.
WHAT IS HONDA’S MAIN TARGET MARKET AND WHAT ARE FUTURE PLANS FOR HONDA IN TERMS OF MARKET SHARES?
Our goal at Syakar Trading Company is to provide world class products selected from various Honda factories from across the world that are suitable for our customers in Nepal. So as such, every person in Nepal of legal driving age is a part of our target group. We plan to launch many exciting new products in the coming years and showcase some state of the art products in the upcoming auto show, in terms of both scooters and motorcycles. Our main priority is on Customer Satisfaction and we take customer satisfaction index(CSI) very seriously. We are confident that as we work hard to exceed customer expectations and provide exceptional service will result in increased market share.
FOCUSING ON THE CUSTOMER POINT OF VIEW, WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES HONDA UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS?
The quality and ease of use of Honda products are the highest in the world being the most reliable 2 wheelers manufacturer with globally influenced style and ergonomics. This makes it

very easy for customers to buy, use and enjoy Honda products without having to think twice. We were also the first to bring and sell 2 wheelers in Nepal and so Honda holds a very special place in the heart of Nepali people.
tremendous amount of facilities that will be a first for any industry here in Nepal. So, you could say that we are just as focused and obsessed with Customer satisfaction.
IF YOU HAVE TO STATE, HOW MUCH DO YOU THINK ARE THE CUSTOMERS SATISFIED WITH THE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES PROVIDED BY HONDA? ALSO, WHAT ARE THE MEASURES THAT HONDA AS A BRAND HAVE TAKEN TO SATISFY THE CUSTOMERS?
We have applied a new operating procedure, Service point evaluation and training program for all our service points thanks to the support and training of Honda Japan, especially Mr. Maho Tada from the Service Planning Department of Honda Motor Co. We are also building a state of the art service facility in Teku and aggressively adding service points across Nepal. We just inaugurated a 60,000 sq.ft. spare parts warehouse in Naikap and we have just tied up with Idemitsu to launch a new Honda Genuine Oil exclusively for Nepal. What all this means for our customers is that they can expect huge improvements in service quality. For us, our relationship with our customers start when we sell the product and we build our relationship while we service our clients.
Since last year, we have invested in a call center that calls every single Honda customer to welcome them into our family and give them information on the product they just purchased. We also do a quick satisfaction survey and we are pleased to say we have above 90% CSI score. We even have a 24-hour call center hotline for complaints and suggestions. Any complaint not addressed within 24 hours comes directly to my desk and we work very hard to resolve our customers’ problems. We have a ‘Ghar Dailo’ program where we provide service to many villages and towns where our Customers are not able to avail authorized service centers. We also run a 24-hour emergency service for our customers. We have invested in Microsoft Navision ERP for all of our dealers across Nepal (a first for any company as we have over a 100 dealer points). We are training all sales staff in 10 levels of Customer satisfaction this year in over 200 days of total training time with participation of over 500 people. We have started conducting DCSI (Dealer Customer Service Index) surveys to check the satisfaction level of our customers as well. We have a training center for all Honda mechanics and classes are run throughout the year. All of our dealers now will have their incentives linked to Customer Satisfaction. We even have a Honda customer app waiting to be deployed as soon as all our dealers are connected to the ERP. This will give our customers
ANY NEW DEVELOPMENT IN TERMS OF AFTER SALES SERVICE?
WITH THE SAFETY TRAINING CENTER, HOW IS HONDA LOOKING TO MAKE AN IMPACT ON THE SAFETY ISSUES OF THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY?
Syakar Trading Company is the proud owner and operator of the Rainbow school certified Honda Safety Riding School located in Gwarko. With over 5 ropanies of black topped tracks and roads, it is one of the largest Safety schools in South east Asia. More importantly we have had the privilege to train thousands of students over the past years. We have trained Army personnel, large corporation employees, and we were even lucky enough to train and share the concepts with Traffic police here in Nepal. The main aim of the Safety Training Center is to reduce the likelihood of accidents and teach how to avoid accidents even in the case of fault of other vehicles. Ultimately, we want our Honda riders to drive safely and enjoy their Honda Products. AUTOLIFE APRIL/MAY 2018 35

SUZUKI INTRUDER

Suzuki is geared to launch the all new Intruder in Nepal. The new Suzuki Intruder is designed more as an urban cruiser, to extend Suzuki’s commuter motorcycle portfolio, rather than being a pure highway machine. Clearly, the new Intruder is targeted at a market segment where there’s a demand for a motorcycle with big bike looks, but is affordable and fuel efficient at the same time. It may be a cruiser styled motorcycle, but the Suzuki Intruder has enough ground clearance with 170 mm. Seat height is also very accessible at 740 mm, and will be welcomed by riders of various height and build. The seat is plush and wide, and offers a comfortable riding position.
36
AUTOLIFE APRIL/MAY 2018
Additionally the Intruder’s foot pegs are set forward, for a more cruiser-type riding position. That however, doesn’t sacrifice the bike’s handling. The handlebar is still compact, though slightly taller, and the bike will not feel unwieldy or wide to be ridden in and around the city or for the daily commute. Suzuki Intruder 150 embraces a bulky design with the heart of the famous Gixxer and inspired looks from the Intruder M1800. It carries not just engine specs from the Gixxer but its suspension assembly and chassis too. In the aesthetics department, this Intruder 150 certainly looks an oddball. A lot of virtual mass has been added to it. The bike comes with a dominating cowl that surrounds a triangularshaped headlight unit with facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Adding to the features front, there are features like ABS, front and rear disc brakes, LED tail lamp, telescopic front forks and rear mono-shock suspension set up. The Suzuki Intruder shares the exact same engine with the 155 cc Suzuki Gixxer - it’s the same carbureted 155 cc, single-cylinder aircooled engine, which makes 14 bhp of maximum power at 8,000 rpm, and 14 Nm of peak torque at 6,000 rpm. This Suzuki engine has been quite successful in the Gixxer, and it carries forward the same refined personality to the new Intruder. The gearbox on the Suzuki Intruder is also a five-speed unit. But the gear ratios have been changed, and the intake, airbox, as well as exhaust systems are different. The Intruder also promises to be easy on the pocket, and will be welcomed by riders looking for a commuter motorcycle with premium, big bike looks.

OWNER’S REVIEW
I am enjoying my time with the Tata Bolt till now and don’t have any complaints about it as such. In my opinion. the finishing of the interiors as well as the exteriors are top notch, making the car have a presence of its own. The ground clearance of Bolt, in my opinion, is comparatively better than some of its rivals, giving it an upper hand in the Nepali market. The furthest that I have traveled with the Bolt is to Banepa and Dhading, and I have to say that the travelling experience was quite comfortable. On the way to Dhading from Kathmandu, I found the car to be pretty comfortable and could be easily handled, considering the fact that there were a lot of turning points. Also, there were no issues in the highway traffic or maintaining highway speed. I found the pre-sales service of Tata to be very good, as a proper explanation of the features and a complete walk through of the car was given before I purchased it. Even the after-sales service provided by Tata is quite good. They call up and ask if there are any problems with the car. Overall, I think that Tata provides good pre-sales and after-sales services to their customers. Being satisfied with the Bolt and services that Tata provides, I have been recommending Tata to others as well. As of now, there are a few Tata cars present in my friend circle as well.

It seems like we’ve all been waiting for ages for the Vitpilen to arrive, that’s probably just because it’s so damn drool worthy. As most of the world’s motorcycle makers scramble to conceive new models with desert-ready personas, one of the most revered names in off-road machines, Husqvarna is rolling out a line of street-focused bikes. The new road models carry the names Svartpilen and Vitpilen for Black Arrow and White Arrow. There are two variations, a 401 and a 701. Both are based on the single-cylinder foundation of motorcycles from KTM, which just happens to be the parent company. And they are lust worthy products from the Austrian design shop Kiska.

Engine Description: 1-cylinder, 4-stroke engine Displacement: 692.7cc Maximum Power: 73.75 HP Maximum Torque: 72 Nm Transmission: 6-speed Seat Height: 830 mm Ground Clearance: 140 mm Fuel Tank Capacity: 12 Litres Vitpilen/ Svartpilen 401 Engine Description: 1-cylinder, 4-stroke engine Displacement: 375 cc Maximum Power: 44 HP Maximum Torque: 37 Nm Transmission: 6-speed Seat Height: 835 mm Ground Clearance: 170mm Fuel Tank Capacity: 9.5 Litres
The 401, following the auto industry’s “shared platform” strategy, picks up KTM’s liquid-cooled 373cc engine, which makes 43 horsepower. The main differences, beyond the color schemes, are found in their intended usage, with the ruggedized Svartpilen getting higher handlebars, gnarly tires, and a twopiece seat, while the Vitpilen gets a tucked-in stance tilted toward the café racer ethos. The 701 has a clearer path in the market, as it largely stands alone in being a pure road bike powered by a big single. Like the 401s, it’s based on KTM components, in this case, borrowing the 692.7cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine producing 75-horsepower from the 690 Duke. Every bit of hardware is toprung: a trellis frame of chrome-moly steel
(and a swingarm with exposed gussets), Brembo brakes (with ABS), and a slipper clutch (to smooth out lurching downshifts). The motorcycle comes with a two-part exhaust, with a pre-silencer made from steel and a final silencer, which is finished off with a black coating. Still, it’s the distinctive styling that sets the 701 model apart—and promises to be its main draw. The striking headlight design starts with a traditional round shape, but leaps toward the future with an LED ring surrounding the beam. The gas tank enclosure bulges laterally like the 401, and copper-toned highlights offset the matte-silver finish of the bodywork. There’s little cover-up here: mechanical details are proudly displayed and thoughtfully rendered, from the lollipop mirrors to the upswept muffler to the truncated tail.

H
Honda has been there ever since the beginning of motorcycle culture in Nepal. The brand has always been able to keep a name for itself and create something iconic in the motorcycle industry. Even more so, Honda has defined an era with some of the most iconic models, shaping a foundation to what the present industry is built upon. From the very early days of Honda, people have widely accepted the brand and relied on what they have been able to provide. In the 80’s, with the XL series, Honda was able to create a cult classic among motorcycle enthusiasts and giving them something that they could ride anywhere. These motorcycles were for all the explorers and wanders. But sadly, the XL series stopped coming to Nepal and a void was left among the masses. But now, Honda has something to fill in this void with the XR series. We have already seen how the XR150L has performed exceptionally well in the market. Now we have something that is a successor to the classic XL185, a new addition to the XR series, the XR190L. For this issue, we got our hands on the XR190L and took it out for a spin. Here, we present you with our thoughts on the XR190L.

Design and Features
Honda has done it again with the XR190L, by coming up with a motorcycle that can appeal to everyone. At the first glance, the motorcycle looks very tamed but if you keep looking at it, the beauty of the bike just keeps enhancing. Even the color combinations on the XR are well selected and the shade of red and white just make the designs pop out even more. The spoked rims, long travel suspensions, high front fender and the exhaust design give the bike a wellrounded off-roader stance. However, the XR doesn’t look like an outright dirt bike but more so a dual-purpose bike that can take anything that you throw at it. On the features department, the Honda XR190L is pretty much a very basic machine, keeping things as simple as it can. The most notable feature on this bike has to be the PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection) system designed for optimal balance of performance and economy. What the PGM-FI does is, it monitors the engine and the riding conditions along with the throttle control through the ECU (Engine Control Unit) ensuring the right amount of combustion and aiding ignition in all kinds of weather conditions and altitudes. As mentioned earlier, everything else on the motorcycle is pretty basic, the instrument cluster comes with an analog speedometer and fuel meter. The
46

motorcycle comes loaded with a crossbar-design handlebar which is built to be fully compatible for challenging off-road riding, with positioning that provides a commanding riding position. Also, the XR comes with a rear carrier that can be loaded up to a maximum of 20kgs. However, the motorcycle misses out on other essentials such as ABS, digital console and a rear disc brake setup.
Engine and Performance
It is without a doubt that Honda has made a name for itself in terms of engine refinement, and it is made evident with the XR190L. As soon as you set your legs across the XR and rev it up, the motorcycle is as smooth as butter. The XR feels like a 125cc motorcycle in terms of engine refinement and smoothness but at times it does feel a little underpowered for a 190cc. The motorcycle comes fitted with a 184.4cc air cooled single cylinder with SOHC and PGM-FI that creates maximum power of 15.6hp @ 8,500rpm and maximum torque of 15.7NM @ 6,000rpm. The engine on the XR is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. All of this coupled with a light body weight of 123kgs (dry weight) makes it a treat to ride. The performance of the XR is something that can be defined as best of both worlds and something that makes it a very capable dual-purpose motorcycle. Even though the numbers seem pretty low on
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
the specifications, the XR has a grit of its own with the way the motorcycle pulls up on any kind of obstacle. The motorcycle, on highways, can easily cruise at a speed of 80kmph in the 5th gear and even on dirt, the mid-range grunt that the XR has is very enjoyable, giving the rider enough confidence and power to slide through off-roads. More so, the motorcycle feels really well balanced in terms of power to weight ratio, that doing swift maneuvers on the motorcycle feel like a walk in the park for the rider.
Braking and Suspension
The stopping power on the XR190L comes from a 240mm Hydraulic Disc with dual piston caliper at the front and 110mm leading/trailing drum at the rear. Even though it has the braking department covered, it could have been better with some more linear feel to the brakes rather than the more progressive one that can be felt on the bike. The front brakes are very subtle and feel light but it
AUTOLIFE APRIL/MAY 2018 47
could use a little bit more bite. And as for the rear brake setup, we think that it could’ve been better off using a disc setup rather than a drum setup. The suspension on the XR is quite the rider friendly one, making the ride so much more enjoyable. The motorcycle gets telescopic front forks with 161mm of travel and a monoshock setup with 151mm of travel. The long travel of the suspension coupled with the high ground clearance of 245mm is what has made this bike a proper companion for streets of Nepal, at the same time making sure that there aren’t much jolts and thumps while going on patchy roads. The suspension setup makes you want to take the bike to places where you couldn’t think of taking any other bikes and has helped the bike deal with undulations of rough terrains. Honda could’ve used fatter forks up front for more beefier feel but the present ones do just fine as well.
Comfort and Handling
Even with a dual-purpose styling in mind, the XR190L is designed very ergonomically so that it isn’t stressful on the rider for long runs. The motorcycle features a long and wide seat that ensures comfort; the seat might seem a little hard at first but the spaciousness covers up for

that. There is plenty of space to move around and the tank is well sculpted to support off road rideability. Honda has even made sure that this motorcycle can fit everybody. Even with having a high ground clearance, the motorcycle has a low seat height to accommodate shorter riders, ensuring full control over the motorcycle. Not only in terms of engine refinement, but Honda has made sure that the handling of the XR is effortless. And that it is, the XR is without a doubt a very flickable motorcycle. The light body and handle bars make sure that the motorcycle can be easily managed in all sorts of terrain. Even in rough terrains, the motorcycle feels really planted and even if you lose balance, the motorcycle is so light that you can just put your foot down and regain full control of it. The dual-purpose tires are also another plus point giving the rider all the needed confidence to go in corners without the fear of slipping out of control.
Verdict
The Honda XR190L is a perfect companion that will not let you down. It is an all-round performer for all your need and we have to say that the XR can be a perfect motorcycle if we take into context the road conditions of Nepal. It can even be an entry level motorcycle for anyone that’s looking to get into motocross or enduro riding. Overall, the motorcycle is indeed a very friendly and peppy one that goes along with the brand image of Honda. However, the price tag of Rs. 5,69,000/- is something to consider for some but still that is with the reliability of a Honda.

RIDING GEARS
THE ESSENTIALS FOR THE RIDERS’ SAKE
w
We have been investing a lot of money buying motorcycles and more so with maintaining them so they don’t go out of order, making sure that these machines don’t die out on us. The mentality is to take care of our motorcycles to keep them perfect as long as possible. But what about the riders, have we been thinking about the care of the rider that’s on the motorcycle or even what would happen in case of an accident? People usually think putting on a helmet is going to be a life saver like they have no other parts of their body except their head. They presume that only a single helmet is going to protect them in case of a crash. But that’s not all, people need to be aware of motorcycle safety gears to keep themselves from harms way. We have here explained 5 essential riding gears to ensure the safety of the rider.
RIDING BOOTS
Ankles are one of the most delicate joints on your body and the chances of breaking your ankles in case of an accident are very high. Riding boots are specially designed to keep the impact as minimum as possible and the ankles are reinforced so that they don’t bend beyond a certain point with added protection around the ankle area. Full length boots come to the rider’s shin and offer optimum protection with shin guards. These boots are generally made from leather and synthetic stretch panels.
50

HELMETS
This one is pretty obvious since it protects the most important part of your body, your brain. A quality full faced helmet is a must for any rider; why full-face? Because you never know which part of your head is going to have the first impact. Helmets are basically constructed with different layers of Expanded Polystyrene liner (EPS) to absorb the impact, which is beneath the main layer of the outer shell that is made out of tough and flexible Polycarbonate, Kevlar and fiber composites . Also, there is the visor to protect your eyes from on coming dust and small stones and make it comfortable, there are inner liners to fit according to the rider. Its always better to invest on helmets with safety compliances and standard certifications such as DOT.
RIDING JACKET
A jacket is a piece of riding gear that protects other vital parts of your body such as shoulders, back, elbows, arms, chest and other organs. Most riding jackets come with shoulder, elbow, back and chest padding/protectors made from specialized Polyurethane (pu) material to reduce the effects of the impact. Also, to save the rider from road rashes these jackets are made from specialized materials that are abrasion resistant and are relatively thicker than normal jackets; these are usually made from full textile, mesh or leather. Some jackets even come with thermal and detachable water resistant inner liners that can be used for all four-season usage.
RIDING GLOVES
Proper riding gloves come with knuckle protection and reinforced material around the palm area that are going to ensure full protection of a rider’s hand. These gloves are generally made of leather so that they won’t tear easily during a crash and keep the rider’s hands from getting bruised. Some gloves go beyond the wrist and are know as gauntlets offering more wrist protection. Riding gloves are as important as helmets and every rider should opt for one and invest on a good pair of gloves.
RIDING PANTS
Similar to riding jackets, the pants come with hip and knee protectors which offer optimum protection in case of a crash. Just like the jackets, these pants are made of special abrasion resistant material such as full textile and special denim material that are going to protect the rider during accidents. These pants are preferable during long rides and tours.

We all have faced situations where we have been frustrated in the roads while driving or riding. There are some times that the roads feel like a war zone, specially during peak hours; everyone is in a rush and trying to get into the tiniest of spaces to move forward. These people, maybe due to lack of awareness or mere stupidity, think that they are the only ones on the roads and what they do or the way they drive are not to going to have an effect on others on the road. And then there are pedestrians, not caring about the vehicles around them like if they aren’t on a vehicle then they are not prone to accidents. Well, sometimes, these frustrations just make you believe in the saying that the roads are filled with idiots.
We can see all sorts of human beings on the roads. There are some pedestrians that just don’t care for what is on the road; for instance, there are people crossing the road by looking straight ahead and some who are holding a phone, talking leisurely and just walking along the road. Then there are the group wanderers, why the wanderers? Because these people are so involved among their own circle and they are occupying half the road, swaying all over the place, confusing vehicles and blocking their way. Even if you honk at them, they are so busy with the group that they don’t even care to listen to it. And if you keep honking for long enough, they’ll stare right back at you like you’re disturbing their peace. Sometimes, one of them would wander off right in front of your vehicle and if you happen to ever so slightly just touch them with your front bumper or tire, they would be screaming at you like its your fault and like you don’t have eyes. Yes, these kinds of senseless and unaware people do exist. Then there are some people that just blatantly cross the roads without even looking at oncoming traffic. Some cross the road whenever and wherever they want to, just looking up straight; its hard to tell if they are just confused themselves or just want to cause problem for the vehicles that are on the road. Also, even if there are overhead crossing bridge or a zebra crossing nearby, they just choose a point that they feel like and just walk. Not only that, but there are some that use zebra crossing and think that just by using a zebra crossing they don’t have to look on the road like they are invincible and that the zebra crossing creates a barrier between them and the road traffic. Moving on to road traffic, some people are just ignorant and cause a distraction, sometimes making the roads feel like a battlefield. It just seems like that, for some people the traffic rules are so complex that it just doesn’t go along with them. First off, there are a few drivers that
don’t know the proper usage of turn signals. These people, sometimes don’t ever use their side blinkers or just decide to use them just as they are about to make a turn, that too from the furthest point of the turn. For instance, a car wants to turn left but its still going on the right side of the left lane and then just decide to use their side lights just as they are at the point that they are going to turn. But then again it wont matter, because they are upfront and if a vehicle from behind hits them, its automatically the fault of the one that’s behind and they start arguing that they used their turn signal. Speaking of road traffic, the roads of Nepal are filled with racers. We get to see all sorts motorcyclists revving their way through jam packed traffic, overtaking anything that comes in their way. These situations can get quite risky and it just seem like some of these riders don’t care about their precious life. But its not only motorcyclists to blame here, we get to see a lot of public vehicles doing the same as well. These big vehicles are swerving through traffic just to get people in before the other vehicle does. And that’s not it, sometimes these vehicles speed up so much that they are overtaking other vehicles using the opposite lane and narrowing the road for all the other people using the roads. Then there are people so indulged in their own driving that they don’t even give way to ambulances or vehicles using emergency signals and sirens. The lack of such traffic sense is what has led to the roads being so terrible and unbearable. Yet still, people keep complaining about how narrow the roads are or that there aren’t appropriate traffic rules. They keep talking about how things need to be changed in terms of infrastructures to make the roads better. But maybe the first thing that needs to be changed is the mentality and ignorance of the people. Then we can start complaining of what has been and the infrastructures that we have.
THERE ARE TIMES WHEN THE ROADS FEEL LIKE A WAR ZONE, SPECIALLY DURING PEAK HOURS; EVERYONE IS IN A RUSH AND TRYING TO GET INTO THE TINIEST OF SPACES TO MOVE FORWARD

HONDA
JOURNEY OF AN ICON COMPILED BY: AUTOLIFE TEAM
With a brand that has been claimed to be one of the top competitors in the motorcycle industry, Honda has had its humble beginnings with moments of turmoil but still striving for a dream that was Honda. The heritage of Honda, since its inception till date, is something of a spectacle; evolving through the time and becoming the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. The history of Honda dates back to the 1906 with the birth of Soichiro Honda in Yamahigashi, Japan. Starting out as just a repair shop later on by Soichiro when he was just a teenager, Honda has come a long way with the vision of its founder.
W
Honda Motor Company Ltd. was the brainchild of a true visionary. Soichiro Honda was the central character that revolved around the history and heritage of Honda; it was his vision and dream that made establishment of Honda possible. From a very early age, Soichiro Honda was fascinated by the mechanics of engines and was working with his father and helped him repair farm machinery. Honda began improving his mechanical skills and by 15 he moved to Tokyo and worked in auto repair shops and started repairing cars and motorcycles but still pursuing the hobby of auto racing. In 1930, he started producing piston rings during the war but the business didn’t do good and ended along with the war. Shortly after the World War II, Soichiro Honda started producing motorized bicycles to war ravaged Japan as a cheap

form of transportation. And eventually after that in 1949, the first ever Honda motorcycle was produced. The motorcycle featured the first Honda designed motor and frame. This model was called the D-type, the D signifying Dream. It was fitted with a full 98cc engine that produced around 3 bhp. After the D-type models, Honda came up with E-type Dream which had a bigger 146cc engine. This motorcycle was the first big seller for Honda and about 130 units were being produced per day in 1951. In 1952, Honda started producing yet another motorcycle that would take the market by storms. It was a 50cc motorcycle with a two-stroke engine with 1/2 horsepower and was named the Cub. Within a year, this little motorcycle was being produced at 6500 units. The cash flow from this model was what secured the financial future of the company. But while the motorcycle sales were rising over the first decade, the company almost went under in 1953 due to the Korean war that resulted in economic depression of Japan. Even though the sells were low Honda didn’t close down the company because he didn’t want anymore people to go out of work. Honda made the right choice to continue producing motorcycles even after the depression. As of 1958, Honda was profitable again due to the iconic Super Cub C100. It was a revolutionizing motorcycle that changed the motorcycle industry with the C100 being the first

to sell in the US. The motorcycle was designed so that it would be easy for both men and women to ride it. it introduced an automatic centrifugal clutch for easier gear shifting - and featured a horizontally sited engine facilitating a step-through design. The engine was an air-cooled OHV mill outputting four times as much power as the F-Type (4.5hp). The Super Cub is known as the most successful motorcycle in history with Honda recently celebrating the 100 millionth production of the motorcycle over 60 years of production. The Super Cub was marketed as a cheap and versatile bike that would be fun and easy to ride for everyone. It was featured in the famous “you meet the nicest people on a Honda” marketing campaign that eventually made the C100 motorcycle the best-selling motorcycle of all time. Besides the iconic C100, Honda had produced several other motorcycles that it would add on to its heritage in the 1950s. In 1953, Honda began producing a four-stroke single powered motorcycle featuring more engineering sophistication. In 1954, the 200cc scooter Juno was produced, and in 1957 Honda introduced their first twincylinder bike, the legendary 250cc OHC four-stroke C70 Dream. The same model was altered in 1958 by fitting it with an electric starter and renaming it C71. Then came the inception of the CB series of motorcycles from Honda. They were to become a game changer with newly engineered parallel twin engines that delivered more power. These series were some of the first models to be exported to Europe. These motorcycles were higher in capacity as well with some being a 250cc, 305cc and a 450cc, the biggest that Honda had built at the moment. The first commercially successful large motorcycle from this effort was the CB450, brought out in 1965 which was also known as the black bomber. This innovative engine allowed high rpms and was the first serious effort by Honda to challenge English dominance in

HONDA IS A BRAND THAT HAVE CULTIVATED THE MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY AND PAVED A WAY FOR THEMSELVES TO BE ONE OF THE LONGEST AND HIGHEST MANUFACTURING COMPANY IN THIS INDUSTRY the American marketplace. This would then lead to the production of CB750 in 1969 that featured a four-cylinder engine. The design would reach its full potential in 1978 with the production of the cult classic inline 6-cylinder CBX. These models would pave a new way for touring motorcycles and then Honda would introduce the Goldwing; still prominent as a perfect touring motorcycle. In addition to touring, Honda started developing V-engines for high speed touring and this would lead to the inception of the VF and VRF series of motorcycles in the 70s. Every decade seemed like a stepping stone to what Honda has become and how far it has come. It seemed like there was no stop to tyrant that was Honda which then went on to produce some of the fastest bikes in history with its CBR series and making a place for themselves in sports riding.

So far, the heritage of Honda is in no way lacking allure and fascinating. Honda is a brand that have cultivated the motorcycle industry and paved a way for themselves to be one of the longest and highest manufacturing company in this industry. Even the history of Honda in Nepal itself is something to be admired. With 50 years of presence in Nepal, Honda has been seen as a brand that has been synonymous to motorcycles and have always been accepted by the masses for their quality in products and services. Lets dive in to look in to how far Honda has come in perspective of Nepal and how has it grown since its introduction.
Talking about motorsports, Honda has played a big role in it with the establishment of HRC (Honda Racing Corporation) and being active in sports activities from 1959. Initially, Honda was involved in Isle of Man TT and left a remarkable mark with their 5-cylinder 125cc sports motorcycle that could rev up to 22000 rpm without falling apart. Then they would leave their mark in the Grand Prix as well with their first victory in 1961 and over the years till 1983 there wasn’t any facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
HONDA IN NEPAL IN THE YEAR 1976, SYAKAR COMPANY LIMITED WAS ESTABLISHED WHICH SERVES AS THE AUTHORIZED DISTRIBUTOR AND RETAILER OF HONDA IN NEPAL
Before we dive into the history of Honda in Nepal we must first know the history of Syakar Trading Company who are the sole authorized distributor of Honda Motorcycles & Scooters, Honda Cars, and Honda Power Products in Nepal. However, to dive into the history of Syakar Trading Company one must know about the story of Bhajuratna Kansakar. Bhajuratna Kansakar was a Lhasa Newar who were a breed of hardy Newars who withstood the hardships of traveling through Himalayan passes and braved the harsh living conditions in Tibet. Bhajuratna came from a poor family and had gone to seek opportunities in Darjeeling as many Nepalis including the Sherpas were doing. With what he had earned in Darjeeling, he combined the earnings of his brother to open a textile shop in Kathmandu. His business was flourishing until disaster struck and a fire destroyed his shop. He went back to Darjeeling and opened a shop in Kalimpong from where he could send goods to Tibet. Paying a monthly rent of fifteen rupees, Bhajuratna started selling bronze, brass and copper ware. Thus, his rise to
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
fame began and he was known to all in Tibet as “Syamukapu” (White Cap in Tibetan) derived from the hat he always wore. Foreseeing the benefits in the business, Maniharsha Jyoti son of Bhajuratna founded the trading company Syamukapu in 1920s. Things got worse for the Lhasa traders when war broke out between India and China. India sealed off the border and the lucrative Tibet trade that began in the 7th century came to an end. Many traders were forced back to Nepal to start anew. However, by this time Bhajuratna had founded the company named “Jyoti Brothers” which was the precursor of “Jyoti Group” which was established in its modern corporate form by Maniharsha Jyoti in the 1940s. Jyoti Group was involved in many different types of business from yarn processing to iron and steel. During the setup of the steel plant, Maniharsha Jyoti realized they needed to buy rollers from Japan and through building connections in time they got in touch with Honda. In 1968, Jyoti group first imported the CT 90 bikes from Honda. For the first lot they imported 4 bikes and for the second lot they imported 11 of

them. Slowly they also introduced other bikes in their lineup in the 1970s with the likes of CD 125 and CD 175 with all of them being a hit among the customers. During that time, it was difficult to import goods in Nepal. The import license would only be granted to those who would export goods so as to decrease trade outflow. Jyoti Group then being exporters of many goods were allowed to import them. The journey the bikes had to make from Japan to Kathmandu was also difficult as the bikes would be shipped from Japan to Kolkata and they had to ride the bikes from Kolkata to Kathmandu. Foreign currency was also hard to come by for trade. One must show proof of income obtained by earning in foreign countries. Jyoti Group during that time got access to foreign currency via their export business. However, most of their exports then were to Tibet and most of the time they would be paid with wool and only some proportion in foreign currency. In the year 1976, Syakar Company Limited was established which serves as the authorized distributor and retailer of Honda in Nepal. The company had to tackle many problems during that time. In that period one of the goals of the government was that every “Nepali should have a slipper.” This paired with the average monthly salary of people being Rs.300 at the time shows how poor the people were then. Thus, motorcycles that used to cost multiple thousands of rupees were seen as luxurious goods and the government held less than favorable views towards the company. Nonetheless, the bikes were a huge hit in Nepal. Honda became synonymous with bikes and people used to call every bike they see a “Honda”. Customer acceptance was slow but surely increasing regarding the usage of motorcycles at that time. Most of the customers for these bikes were well-to-do people and those who have good knowledge and passion about motorcycles. In the early eighties with a thousand bikes sold, Honda had ninety percent of the total market share. The most popular bikes during that time was the CG125, CM 200 and the XL125.
60
AUTOLIFE APRIL/MAY 2018
IN THE EARLY EIGHTIES WITH A THOUSAND BIKES SOLD HONDA HAD NINETY PERCENT OF THE TOTAL MARKET SHARE. THE MOST POPULAR BIKES DURING THAT TIME WAS THE CG125, CM 200 AND THE XL125. In 1986, with the government issued Open General License (OGL) which allowed many more people to import goods in Nepal and also which made it easier for Syakar to import easily without the hassle and difficulty of finding foreign currency. After 1990’s revolution, the tax policy and tariffs of the government drastically changed and reduction of excessive tax made motorcycles more accessible to the normal public. These were not the only reasons though, as these bikes were now made in India too which made it cheaper and Nepal at the time saw great economic development which led to the people being more prosperous and have more purchasing power than in the past. Soon people saw motorcycles as an essential commodity rather than a luxurious good. Still though most of the bikes being sold by Honda were inside the Kathmandu Valley rather than outside the other places. This can be attributed to lack of proper roads in other parts of the country which led to lower demand of these bikes. Soon though in the mid-nineties and the early thousands with road being more accessible, the distribution of the bikes sold between inside and outside the valley gradually became equal. Talking about the present, the company officially changed its name to Syakar Trading Company Pvt. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
Ltd. on June 7, 2011 (Jestha 24, 2068 B.S) and is spearheaded by Mr. Saurabh Jyoti. Under his tenure they have gone from strength to strength in introducing new and exciting bikes and scooters which target all segments of the demography. With iconic models like Shine and Unicorn to sports bikes like the CBR series and off roaders like the XR and CRF series, and scooters such as Activa, Aviator, Dio and Navi, Honda has a bike for everyone. After sales service is also something Syakar and Honda is intensely focused on. They believe that after sales service is the key ingredient for providing satisfaction to their customers. Syakar Trading Company believes it to be their strength and doesn’t introduce new products until and unless they are confident that they can provide the spare parts and service satisfactorily to the customers. Not only that, but they have been promoting safety riding with their safety riding training center which has influenced the new procedure to get a riding license. This was an idea that was initiated in 2010 by Syakar as a corporate social initiative to train riders regarding safety on the roads. By far, they have managed to train a total of 10,000 people and the numbers have been growing ever since. From humble beginnings to a multibillion rupee company right now, Syakar hasn’t wavered from its core beliefs and value of providing genuine and good products at a reasonable price. They have also adopted a stance of being environmentally friendly with their bikes always being ahead of the curve when it comes to engine standards. They also regard any customer who buy a Honda product being part of a larger Honda family.

INTERVIEWED BY: AL TEAM | PHOTO BY: GAURAV
The hatchback segment being an already hot segment with a bevy of choices for customers is a hard market to crack and leave an impression. However, Suzuki has introduced the Celerio X which is a fresh facelift of Celerio hoping to do just that. We had a chance to talk with Mr. Karun Shakya, the Senior Marketing Manager of Suzuki about the new hot hatch from Suzuki.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CORE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE CELERIO AND CELERIO X? The new facelifted Celerio was launched 2 months ago. The car is intended to target family-oriented customers with the aesthetics, features and performance that is well suited to their needs. However, the rise in the need of owning a stylish car gave the rise to Limited Edition Celerio X. The Celerio X has striking visual features that makes it stand apart from current standard variant of the Celerio. With it’s new “X” graphics, black wheel claddings, black themed alloy wheel, roof rails and an allblack interior, the Celerio X is more sporty and stylish.
ANY LESSONS OR LEARNINGS INCORPORATED FROM YOUR RECENT LINEUP?
We have always believed that our strongest strength is in the product range that we have been able to provide to our customers. We have the largest product range among competitors, which we believe gives our customers different options and choices to choose the best product that suits their varying needs. Also, we believe that with the addition of the Celerio X, we can strengthen the same philosophy.
HOW WILL THE CELERIO X BE POSITIONED AMONG SUZUKI’S CURRENT PORTFOLIO OF VEHICLES?
The Celerio X is a product intended to add style quotient in the segment dominated by simple looking aesthetic designs and making an impact with what it stands for. We are targeting young family buyers who have an eye for value for money of a vehicle but at the same time want to maintain their stylish image. This car is positioned to stand out from the rest with the charismatic presence that it resonates.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
HOW WELL DO YOU THINK THE CELERIO X WILL PERFORM IN THE CROWDED HATCHBACK SEGMENT?
We don’t believe that there are any reasons that Celerio X will underperform in the competitive hatchback segment. The car will easily stand out in the crowd not only through its striking appeal but also with class leading features. The car is well equipped with safety features such as availability of dual airbags, ABS and seat belt with force limiter and pre-tensioners. The car is also fully loaded with all the amenities that are required to make driving a pleasurable experience.
WHAT ARE THE SALES STRATEGY FOR CELERIO X AND FOR OTHER PRODUCTS BEING SOLD THROUGH CG I MOTOCORP?
The rise in the need of owning a stylish car gave the rise to Limited Edition Celerio X.
We have always been following a very simple strategy throughout our three decades of operation in the country. We believe in providing products that are best in their class while ensuring that we are easily assessable to the customers and more importantly ensuring the entire phases of owning a Suzuki vehicle is a pleasurable one. Our strategy for Celerio X is no different than this.
LASTLY, WHAT ARE YOUR FORECASTS FOR THIS FISCAL YEAR?
We have maintained our position as the number one vehicle selling brand in the country. We are more than confident in maintaining the same position this year as well and we believe that the Celerio X is something that will definitely help our brand to grow even bigger.

Aprilia is sometimes regarded as “the other” Italian sport bike maker after Ducati. But any such second-fiddle reputation is undeserved. Aprilia’s motorcycle range has more sport bikes than some Japanese companies, including superbikes, naked bikes, adventure bikes and street fighters. Blend in eight different scooters, and Aprilia indeed stands tall on the street. Among those eight scooters SR 125 is the second entry of Aprilia in the Nepali market. After the success of its higher capacity brethren, the SR 125 aims to capture more of the market for those wanting a entry level sporty scooter without breaking the bank. We took the scooter for a spin around the valley to find out whether it can live up to the performance standards set by its older sibling.
STYLING
Take a quick glance and it will be hard to find differences between the SR 125 and its 150cc sibling. It seems Aprilia has taken a stance of “If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it.” We aren’t complaining though, it is an impressive looking scooter and its design is dominated by sharp lines and it stands out from the competition. In the looks department, the biggest update of the scooter is the new paint schemes, with the metallic blue one being the headturner. The front has double barreled headlights that stays on the front apron. The graphics of the SR 125 is rather toned down than that of the 150, which will appeal to the more mature section of the audience. The seat is also changed, with it being longer and being an all-black unit. The split grab rail is missing from the SR 125 and is replaced with a belt-loop for the pillion to hold on to. There is also a new color on offer with a bright candy blue which can be popular among young buyers, as opposed to the much understated metallic silver of our review unit. One styling gripe we had is the all analogue instrument cluster which looks really outdated in front of the fully digital consoles that many new scooters come equipped with.

THE SR 125 AIMS TO CAPTURE MORE OF THE MARKET FOR THOSE WANTING A ENTRY LEVEL SPORTY SCOOTER WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK

AUTOLIFE APRIL/MAY 2018 67
ENGINE
The SR 125 has a smaller heart as it is powered by an air-cooled 124.49cc carbureted single cylinder engine that produces 9.52hp @ 7,250rpm and 9.9Nm of torque @ 6,250 rpm. The new engine is lifted from the Vespa 125 and despite delivering a lower power output than the Vespa, it feels faster. This can be attributed to the SR125 being lighter than the metal-bodied Vespa and the acceleration is quite good. It reaches 60kmph with ease but slows down a bit thereafter on the run to 80kmph. The power is sent to the rear wheel via a CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission). The CVT tuning also helps considerably. This motor is quite smooth. It has its own set of vibes, especially when ridden hard and the throttle response is smooth and appreciable.
RIDE AND HANDLING
Suspension duties are courtesy of hydraulic telescopic forks with straight stanchions at the front. While the rear suspension comprises of a single arm with engine crankcase as swinging element, served by a single dual chamber shock with 4-setting adjustable spring preload at the rear. These suspensions are quite stiff which leads to it being sharp and agile when it comes to handling similar to that of the 150. This suspension setup may be harsh and tiring over bad roads, it is an absolute beast given a good snaking road. Aprilia is clearly focusing on handling rather than comfort with this setup which may deter prospective buyers. Another beastly thing for the SR 125 are its 14-inch wheels which offers great levels of stability and grip. The scooter is also great in tight spaces
68
AUTOLIFE APRIL/MAY 2018
and one could easily maneuver it even in congested streets. Aprilia hasn’t made any changes to its brakes from the SR 150 and that’s a good thing as they are just excellent. With a powerful front disc and rear drum brake it offers a lot of confidence to the rider as it can stop this scooter from high speeds without breaking a sweat. This scooter has definitely the best brakes in its class.
ERGONOMICS
Ergonomically speaking the SR 125 is roomy and comfortable for people of all shapes and sizes. The seat height for the SR150 is set at a slightly high 775 mm for a relaxed riding posture. Although the seat is high, you will feel comfortable enough. The front storage compartment seen on most scooters has been removed which allows for a much roomy seating position even for taller riders. However, the under-seat storage is not as roomy as one would like. With a fuel capacity of 6.5 liters and claimed efficiency of over 35 km/l the scooter is also suitable for longer rides.
VERDICT
The SR 125 is one hell of a scooter and undoubtedly qualifies as a sports scooter which focuses on performance and handling rather than outright comfort. The SR 125 is really very capable and isn’t any less enjoyable than the SR 150. However, with similar pricing, one could get confused about which Aprilia to buy. If you want out and out performance then by all means go for the SR 150, however, if you are on a slightly tight budget and want to buy a sports scooter which is also economical, then you may look at the SR 125.

Italy, more than any other country, is known for its motorscooters. In the movies, a photograph of Rome, or in a story about this sunbathed country, the motorscooter is an obvious feature in the Italian way of life. The name most often mentioned when scooters are discussed is Lambretta, and the story of this marque is a study of the post-war industrialization of Italy. The Lambretta, like many of its European brothers, is locked up and interwoven with a parent company that produces many other products in addition to its two-wheeled vehicles.
The story of this legendary scooter actually began in 1922, when Ferdinando Innocenti moved to Rome from his native Pescia for the purpose of building a factory. The product of this enterprising industrialist was steel tubing, and such ingenuity was involved that Innocenti’s wares became renowned throughout Europe.
In 1931, Ferdinando moved to Milan, which had become the industrial center of Italy. And a newer, much larger factory was built. Mr. Innocenti developed a seamless steel tube for industry, and 6000 people were employed in this plant. The primary need, as Ferdinando saw it, was twofold in nature. The first was to begin production of industrial equipment and heavy machinery, and the second was to provide a cheap and reliable method of transportation. To effect this, the new factory was divided into two divisionsthe heavy equipment division and the motor division. The motor division has since been divided into two sections-the scooter section and the car section. When Ferdinando viewed his war damaged homeland in 1946, he saw the roads torn up, cities leveled, and the populace left with little means of transportation. Like Mr. Piaggio, he
70

reasoned that the answer to the transportation problem, was the motorscooter-a vehicle that would feature a low production cost, be inexpensive to operate, and would offer better weather protection than a motorcycle. The wisdom of Ferdinando’s decision can be judged by the fact that today 50 percent of the Italian motor vehicles on the roads are scooters-one for every 25 inhabitants of the country. Altogether, over 3.5 million Lambrettas have been produced, and 40 percent of the current 200,000 annual production is exported to all corners of the world.
The production of motorscooters began in 1947, after one year had been spent in developing and testing the prototype model. The first Lambretta was quite naturally named the Model A, and it featured a single-cylinder two-stroke engine with a bore and stroke of 52 by 58 mm. This provided a displacement of 123 cc, and 4.2 bhp was developed at 4400 rpm. Operating on a 6:1 compression ratio, the Model A delivered up to 120 mpg-a strong selling point in gasoline scarce Italy. The frame into which this little engine was in-mounted was a tubular-panel type with a floorboard on which the rider put his feet.
THE LAMBRETTA “A” TYPE Two seats were provided-one for the rider and one for the passenger. A leg shield at the front of the floorboard provided some protection in the event of rain, and a windshield helped protect the rest of the rider’s body. The rider’s comfort was cared for by leading-link front and torsion bar rear suspension. A point to make here is that, in 1947, about 90 percent of the world’s motorcycles still featured a rigid frame, and probably a half still employed the girder front fork. The 158 lb. Lambretta, therefore, was a very advanced little vehicle-at least as far as riding comfort was concerned! The gearbox on the Model A was a threespeed unit with ratios of 4.17, 6.12, and 12.3, and gear shifting was accomplished by a heel-toe lever on the floorboard. Drive was by chain. Tire size was 3.50 by 7inch. Internal expanding brakes were used on both wheels, and the wheelbase was 48.8 inches. Top speed was something like 42 mph-a speed that must have seemed very rapid when dodging all the potholes in the war ravaged roads! The following year, the Innocenti Corporation began production of several three wheeled scooter-truck combinations, which was an ingenious approach to the hauling of goods and supplies. Four models were built, including three closed panel models, and one open bed affair. On all four models, the cargo compartment was mounted in the front end of the scooter, and two wheels were spread wide to make the thing stable. A car type rack-and-pinion steering mechanism was used, and the gear ratios were lowered so that top speed was only 31 mph on a 6.5:1

third gear. The tire sizes also were enlarged to 3.50-8, and the weight was 330 lbs. The hauling capacity was a surprising 440 lbs, which made the truck a popular rig with businessmen. The creative genius of Ferdinando was not content to sit still, of course, and the scooter underwent constant development. In 1949, the Model B was introduced, and this scooter was the first Lambretta to be exported in good numbers. The powerplant was basically identical to the Model A, but a new method of gear shifting was adopted that is still used today. Gear shifting on the B was done by merely twisting the handlegrip on the right handlebar, plus using the orthodox hand clutch lever on the left handlebar. The weight of the Model B also was reduced to Only 130 lbs., and the tire size was increased to 3.50-8. Power output was listed as 4.3 bhp at 4000 rpm, and the top speed was 43 mph. The fuel consumption was no less than 110 mpg, which even today would be a remarkable rate. A small luggage compartment in the rear was available by lifting the passenger seat, and an attractive red paint job helped make this scooter a popular mount the world over. Later, the Model B was renamed the Model C. The only true difference was addition of a spare wheel and tire on the back. The truck line also was continued with minor changes, and the sales of the dependable little scooters continued to expand.
THE LAMBRETTA “D TYPE During the early 1950s, the recovery from the war became more manifest in Italy, and several of the Latin motorcycle companies began an aggressive effort to dramatically increase their export sales. The Innocenti Corporation was one of these, and it was obvious to Ferdinando and his son Luigi that something was needed to put their name in a prominent place for all to see. Several other Italian concerns had turned to racing or record setting for publicity and prestige, and it was only natural that Moto Lambretta would give some thought to this approach.

The thought soon turned into reality, and the result certainly was and still is one of the most remarkable chapters in the story of the motorcycle. The Innocenti people decided, and wisely so, that road racing was too far removed from scooter practice for them to fully benefit from the publicity. Road racing also had developed into a very technical and expensive proposition then, and it would have taken an all-out effort to topple the giants of the racing game.
LAMBRETTA V SPECIAL Lambretta enlisted the renowned Austrian design studio KISKA who are responsible for some dead sexy models from marques like KTM. After consulting with today’s community of Lambretta enthusiasts, KISKA delivered a design that borrows much of its DNA from the original Lambretta models. The steel body, forged aluminum parts, and replaceable side-panels – now available in carbon fiber upon request – just scream mid-century. Underneath their vintage appearance, the new V-specials boast a wide array of modern components, features, and technology. Some highlights include disc brakes fore and aft, full LED lighting all around, bluetooth connectivity, and a really nifty display that brings the original instrumentation into the 21st century with a digital display topped with an analog speedometer. Engines are available in three sizes: 50cc, 125cc, and 200cc. These modern power plants, the suite of options, and the handsome design are promising, and a planned global distribution network makes it clear that Lambretta is not fooling around here. So this is the story of the Innocenti Lambretta-a delightful post-war story that has had a great deal to do with putting Italians on wheels. Italians are a colorful people with great zest for life and the sight of a boy and girl whirling around the town square and fountain on their scooter is a sight that is typically Roman. With a smile on their face and hair flying in the wind. the Lambretta rider typifies a way of life that many others around the world can envy. “We hope this brand lands in Nepal sooner rather than later and challenge the likes of Vespa and Scomadi to take the crown of one of the best Italian scooters in the country.

KTM: ROARING GEARS STUNT
CHAMPIONSHIP 76
AUTOLIFE APRIL/MAY 2018

I
It is pretty evident how KTM has managed to change the biking scenario of Nepal with their Duke series. The KTM motorcycles have garnered much praise by the youth and ever since its initial launch here in Nepal, it has been able to make a name for itself in the performance-oriented motorcycle industry. It is without a doubt that these motorcycles have been widely accepted by the people. They have set a statement with the brand that they are, but they didn’t just stop there. Now, they have come up with something that’s going to leave an impact with Nepal’s very first stunt riding championship to promote such lifestyle and give riders a platform to showcase their skills. Not only that, but they have managed to bring in one of the most renowned stunt rider, Rok Bagoros, KTM’s official stunt rider and brand ambassador. Roaring Gears, first of its kind, was indeed a spectacle to behold.
Roaring gears was hosted on 12th March, 2018 at Satdobato Swimming Pool complex. At the venue you could see thousands of enthusiastic spectators waiting to witness the first ever stunt championship in Nepal. It must have been a proud moment for KTM with almost 5000 eager fans and stunt fanatics present for the event. The ambience was set with the orange theme of KTM and space was filled with KTM Dukes and RCs. The championship was narrowed down to 8 contestants pitting their skills against each other. The event began with a short introductory speech by KTM which was followed by an opening speech delivered by Rok Bagoros. Even though Bagoros has travelled around the world doing stunt shows, he was speechless seeing the enthusiastic crowd. After all the intros and speeches were done, it was time for the 8 contestants to get into the arena and show their worth. Each rider was given 5 minutes for a freestyle stunt demonstration that would then be judged. One after another, these riders battled like gladiators for their chance at the victory of the first stunt championship. After all the riders were done with their turns, it was time for the BMX riders to get on the ground. A group of young boys came in swirling through the entrance and started doing their thing. These boys were amazing with their bicycles and the control that they had over it. One of the best part was when two of the organizers laid down on the ground and these BMX riders would jump over them one after another. Then after the BMX riders’ performance, it was time for the highlight of the show. Rok Bagoros was ready with his bike and entered the ground revving his bike with a loud custom exhaust. The motorcycle that was used for the performance was actually custom built by the man himself. It was a Duke 250 modified with equipment that Bagoros had brought with himself. Rok Bagoros has a way with his audience and he pumped up the crowd very much. His performance was divided into two parts, the first one was more of a freestyle stunt riding with some of Bagoros’ own personal touch. After the first part, it was time for the result that everyone was eagerly waiting for. 22-year-old Bhim Hona was declared the winner of the facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
championship whereas Ram Sardar and Ramesh Duwal bagged 2nd and 3rd positions respectively. After the winners were announced, the stage was set for Rok Bagoros again. This time we could see some of the iconic Bagoros moves; the one where he does a stoppie and kisses a girl and the one where he has an ensemble representing his logos and sets it on fire. The event was over with a grand success and with much acclamation from the crowd.
We even had a chance to speak to Rok Bagoros before the event. Here we have a conversation that we had with the man himself. AUTOLIFE APRIL/MAY 2018 77
LET’S START WITH YOUR BEGINNINGS, HOW DID YOU START PERFORMING STUNTS?
I started off like any other stunt rider, it was 10 years back and I was looking at some crazy sports bike stunts and at that time I used to have a moped. And back then moped stunt riding was a big deal in Europe. So, there was a friend of mine who was selling a moped for cheap and I bought it from him and started practicing stunts with it in local parking lots. Well, there was YouTube, it taught me the basics.
THROUGHOUT THE STUNTING PROFESSION, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE MAJOR DRAWBACKS THAT YOU HAD FACE TO REACH WHERE YOU ARE RIGHT NOW?
The major drawback that I have faced was to get sponsors initially. It was a major problem for me because I had invested so much time in finding sponsors, sending hundreds of proposals and everything used to get canceled. Other major drawbacks have to be injuries, I had a ligament injury and a whole season was over for me. But I have to say that I have been lucky in my career till now, I believed in my gut feeling and so far, I have to say I have had made the right decisions.
HOW DID THE RELATION BETWEEN YOU AND KTM COME INTO EXISTENCE? HOW HAS IT BEEN DEVELOPED AND HOW HAS IT BEEN GOING ON SO FAR?
I’ve been with KTM for the past seven years since 2011. My amateur stunt riding started in 2007 and I eventually started getting more and more sponsors, and I was beginning to be famous in all these social media platforms. Then I went to the second biggest motorcycle exhibition in Europe and KTM was also there and just a week before that I had one of my first big show outside country with Chris Pfeiffer who is also my idol and someone who has made this sport mainstream. So, I was going to the exhibition with him and then he told me why I don’t approach KTM and I thought sure why not. Also, KTM had just launched the new

Duke 125 model in 2011. So then I approached KTM and presented myself in front of them and they said that they were looking for a fresh face and asked me to come on board and then the rest was history. My career changed 180 degrees and it has been an amazing journey till now.
WHAT BRINGS YOU TO NEPAL? WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS THAT YOU HAVE ABOUT THE COUNTRY AND THE STUNT SCENARIO HERE IN NEPAL?
The guys from KTM Nepal had seen me online and they had been trying to bring me here in Nepal to do a stunt show. They had contacted my manager and invited me for the Roaring Gears Stunt Championship and every thing got set, and now I am here in Nepal. Whenever I visit a new country, I look it up on YouTube and see the top things to do while travelling there. Then I look at the road conditions and how they are. I also try to look if there are any riders in the country so that I can ride with them and have fun. So, I saw that the stunt riding scene here in Nepal is pretty amazing and I am looking forward to all the good things that the country has to offer.
IF YOU WOULD HAVE TO GIVE ADVICE TO A NEW RIDER LOOKING GET INTO STUNT RIDING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
First of all, don’t practice and do stunts on the street but find an empty space like a parking lot and practice there, so it’s safe for you and safe for others as well. More importantly, you need to have fun with what you’re doing and don’t stress with that. Also, wear protection gear, even if you don’t have full riding gear at least wear a helmet. Its also a good idea to practice with other stunt riders and share experiences which will help you to learn a lot of things.

KNOW YOUR TIRES
COMPILED BY: PRASHANT MANANDHAR & ANMOL SHRESTHA
I
It’s a decision every bike enthusiast must make when it comes time to buy new tires–bias ply or radial? This decision affects the handling of your vehicle and it affects the ride quality as well. Radial tires have proven results on and off the racetrack. So, why are bias-ply tires still being used in the motorcycle world? This is something we would like to tackle in this article. Before we dive into it though, we must know what a radial or a bias ply tire is. Bias-ply tires were the standard tires for many years. They are a more old-school design of tire that’s been around for nearly a century. A bias-ply tire gets its name from how it is constructed. The plies that are used to build up the tire are laid on a bias (diagonal) from bead to bead. The next ply is laid over the top of the previous ply in the opposite direction, creating a crisscross pattern. Bias-ply tires carry a rating of strength at 2 plies, 4 plies, 6 plies and so on. In the past, these ratings directly correlated with the number of plies used during the construction. Now because of the advancement in the materials that are used, manufacturers do not need to use as many plies and the rating is now based on strength. The construction of bias-ply tires makes the sidewalls very stiff which makes them a great choice for heavier motorcycles or bikes with heavier loads. The

AUTOLIFE APRIL/MAY 2018 83
BIAS PLY CONSTRUCTION stiff sidewalls will also help prevent the tires from washing out while cornering. Bias-ply tires are known for their high mileage capabilities as well and these tires are the only tires that can be used with a tube, which is needed for spoked rims and off-road riding. One of the main downsides of bias-ply tires is that they do not dissipate heat very well, this being said these tires are not a great choice for high speed motorcycles as they can overheat and deteriorate quickly. The fact that the stiff sidewalls do not flex very much in corners, limits the amount of contact patch between the tire and the road. But all things aside, these tires make up for a good touring option with the added advantage of durability. Radial tires for motorcycles were introduced roughly 30 years ago. Radial tires were an attempt to correct some unwanted characteristics of bias-ply tires. The way that radial tires are constructed is what sets them apart from biasply tires. The plies are laid down perpendicular (90 degrees) from bead
84
AUTOLIFE APRIL/MAY 2018
RADIAL PLY CONSTRUCTION to bead, or to the direction of tread. The plies run over the face and down the sidewall of the tire to create a wrapping effect. Many radial tires are then belted (usually with steel), which helps to stabilize the tire and reduce wear. The sidewalls of radial tires are thinner than bias-ply tires, which makes them weaker. In order to make the sidewalls stronger, some manufacturers use materials like Kevlar for reinforcement. The softer sidewalls do however help to provide a smoother ride by acting as a “spring” to absorb bumps. These tires will also flex more in corners compared to bias-ply tires, which helps to keep more tread on the riding surface for more traction. The greatest benefit of belted radial motorcycle tires is their ability to dissipate heat well. The weight of the motorcycle is distributed more evenly throughout the tread of belted radial tires to accomplish this. This allows motorcycles to go faster because the heat doesn’t build up to a critical point. One downside of radial tires is that the thin sidewalls are more susceptible to punctures and also,
they are not recommended to be used with a tube. So, the question still remains, which kind of tires to go for? From which tires are you going to get the best performance? Well, it all boils down to the rider’s personal preference and the way they want their bikes to perform. Some might prefer biasply but some might prefer radials. Overall, we have mentioned how how the tires perform emphasizing on their basic descriptions and their usage bundled up together with both their plus points and downsidesbut in the end its all the decision of the rider and what they want.
