Good day and welcome to the second lap of what has been a memorable season here at AutoLife Grand Prix. Relax, it’s not really some genuine Formula 1 race that you are about to witness, as you might have begun to expect. For those of you who are holding this magazine for the first time in your hand, this is just our announcement of letting you know that we are moving on with our second year drive. And for those of you who aren’t new to AutoLife Magazine, we couldn’t thank you enough for having unofficially made us one of the champions in the promotion of the local auto industry. So here we start off the second lap, with great pride and high hopes to still remain the crowd favourite. Already off to a great start with a lightning quick first lap, we really don’t look forward to not spin out of the race. If you are reading this, chances are that the much-feared apocalypse is either looming over our heads or never happened at all. However, here at AutoLife we decided to hope for the best and begin the second run looking at the sunnier side of things. We bring to you a fullfledged test drive of the resurrected Japanese hero - Nissan Sunny - in a completely new avatar. It’s not just a car. It’s a caaaar! Also, for the first time ever, we bring to you an exclusive review of the premium Mitsubishi Pajero Ambulance. Yes, ambulance! For the avid bikers, we have a heavy arsenal of epic legends lined up with the gravity defying stunt guru Chris Pfeifer and the Spaniard speedster Jorje Lorenzo. There is also more for the petrol heads who worship the very thought of some day racing in Formula 1. Catch our piece on the youngest triple world F1 champion, Sebastian Vettel. We also delve into a very serious matter regarding the government’s negligence towards the building of a cycling lane in Kathmandu. Pushkar Shah, probably the most celebrated cyclist of Nepal, discusses more about the issue in a personal chat with AutoLife. Then there’s our coverage of the recently concluded Traffic Week and the new road regulations in the offing. Lastly, to introduce things more than in the local periphery, we bring you an international road trip story of a Nepalese biker based in the USA. If inspired to hit the roads yourself, you might as well first read through some of our safety initiatives for cycle/motorcycle riding. So, all of this should pretty much make for a good start to our second lap. But, if the world did actually come to an end and you happen to be reading through this as the last person alive, our sincerest condolences.

XUV 500 COMING TO NEPAL Agni Incorporated, the authorized dealers of Mahindra & Mahindra vehicles in Nepal, are gearing up to launch its much awaited XUV 500 in the market by early 2013. The premium Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) from Mahindra & Mahindra is already a huge sensation in India and with the right pricing it should be a hit here too. The XUV 500 has an impressive exterior, with large front bumper and projector headlamps which is further accompanied by Mahindra’s macho signature front grille. The interiors are equally appealing, spacious and feature rich with the top-end variant of the vehicle offering climate control system, cruise, audio, phone controls and voice command switches on steering, 6-inch colour touch screen infotainment display, AUX, Bluetooth and USB support. Other features include eight-way adjustment for driver’s seat, electrically adjustable and retractable Outdoor Rear View Mirrors (ORVM), AC vents for rear passengers, dualtone dashboard and mobile charging points. Mahindra has powered the vehicle with its mHawk 2.2-litre transverse diesel engine that can generate a maximum power of 140 bhp at 3,750 rpm and maximum torque of 330 nm at 1,600 rpm. The vehicle comes with a six-speed manual transmission system. As far as safety features are concerned, the vehicle is fitted with electronic stability programme, antilock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBD), six air bags for the safety of driver as well
as passengers, side impact beams and crumple zones among others. The XUV 500 is available in seven colours and three variants in India. Agni Incorporated hasn’t disclosed the prices and is yet to decide which variants it would launch in Nepal. The XUV 500 will compete with the likes of Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, SsangYong Korando and Tata Safari. If priced competitively and reasonably under the 50Lakhs territory for the highest variant, the vehicle should definitely raise the bar for Mahindra in the domestic SUV market.

CHEVY SAIL U-VA LAUNCHED Chevrolet has finally launched the Sail U-VA hatchback in India. The car gets two engine options - a 1.2-litre petrol engine with 86bhp of power and 113Nm of torque and a 1.3-Multijet diesel from Fiat that develops 78bhp and 205Nm torque. The Sail U-VA gets Chevy’s signature design cues, a dual-port grille adorned with a gold bowtie, better styled headlamps and fog lamps, bigger side windows and a wider-opening rear door. Salient interior features on the new Sail UVA include dual-colour fabric, chrome highlights and more than 25 smart storage spaces. The prices for the petrol version start at IC Rs 4.44 lakh and go up to IC Rs 5.57 lakh for the top version. The diesel starts at IC Rs 5.87 lakh and goes all the way to IC Rs 6.62 lakh. The biggest news for India though is the arrival of Chevrolet’s 353 advantage scheme. The Sail will get 3 year Chevy promise, which means no charges for servicing and spares like oil and filters for three years. It will also get an industry first 5-year/150,000 km engine and transmission warranty, along with 3 year vehicle warranty. Seems like a good deal. We hope the same is implemented here in Nepal too.
DIESEL MOTOR FOR HONDA INDIA
The world’s largest maker of petrol engines, Honda, didn’t take easily to making diesel engines for years. But the skyrocketing price of fuel and a loss of market share in certain markets have forced Honda to come up with the new i-DTEC diesel engine. Finally Honda has unveiled its impressive new 1.6 litre i-DTEC motor in Japan. Known as Earth Dreams Technology, it will be introduced in India in its 1.5 form at the beginning of 2013 in the Brio-based Amaze saloon. Honda’s 1.5-litre i-DTEC motor for India uses the same architecture as the 1.6 and also comes with the same sophisticated hardware to reduce weight and friction. The only differences are that the Indian version has a smaller fixed-geometry turbo (FGT) and
HONDA CB TWISTER IN NEW SHADES Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) have released two new colours for its CB Twister 110cc commuter bike. The CB Twister gets white and grey livery in addition to its existing colours. The Twister uses a four-stroke, 109cc, single-cylinder and air-cooled engine allied to a four-speed gearbox. Maximum power is 9bhp at 8000rpm and peak torque is 8.8Nm at 6000rpm. The CB Twister is a successful, best in class Honda motorcycle in India, and its new colours are certain to add appeal for potential buyers. The bike is priced at IC Rs. 53,329 (ex-showroom, Pune) and the two new colours are readily available in Indian showrooms.
MAHINDRA BIDS FOR ASTON MARTIN According to media reports, a 50 per cent stake in Aston Martin could be sold out within this year. Though Aston Martin boss Ulrich Bez has stressed that the company is not for sale, he has conceded that there is a potential need for a technical partner. Mahindra & Mahindra and InvestIndustrial are reportedly the front runners for the acquisition of a 40-50 per cent equity share and 50 per cent voting rights in the iconic British car maker Aston Martin. M&M is poised to edge out the Italian private equity fund with the higher undisclosed bid. M&M is the world’s largest tractor maker and is the leading SUV manufacturer in India. It lacks any luxury or sports car in its portfolio and was once keen on buying Jaguar Land Rover too, before it went to Tata. If the deal gets through, it would help the company to expand its current product portfolio and allow Mahindra to gain critical know-how for the next step of their global growth strategy. While M&M’s successful bid in the UKbased sports carmaker will definitely enhance its global footprint in the long run, lack of synergies between the two brands could pose challenges in the short term. Negotiations are still on with Aston Martin’s current shareholders and management.
no Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), which is not needed in India. In the future, a more powerful version of this engine to power the next-generation City and Jazz too is expected. Honda will produce the engine in India and that will mean a very competitive price could be possible.

CUSTOM CONCEPT FROM BMW
FIAT 500e UNVEILED
BMW has confirmed that their new rumoured ‘custom concept’ will be making its debut in 2013. The bike based on a R1200, has been confirmed for release on the 90th anniversary celebrations of the German company. The bike is expected to not only mark BMW’s past, but also look towards the future. Though the bike’s name is yet to be revealed, BMW has hinted that it will be powered by an air-cooled boxer engine that is the currently also used in model such as the R1200GS, R1200RT and R1200R models. It is going to be a fairly classic and retro styled roadster with conventional upside down forks. BMW will keep the design both simple and easy to develop at the lowest possible cost by raiding the wide range of parts in the BMW range.
JAGUAR SHOWCASES THE XFR-S
Fiat has unveiled a new electric version of its popular 500 hatchback. The 500e has a 24kWh electric engine which produces 111bhp of power and 199Nm of torque. It claims to run 161km when fully charged and aiding the claims of higher range are the 15-inch Firehawk GT low-rolling resistance tyres. Fiat says that the 500e will only take four hours for a complete charge. To complement the powertrain, Fiat has changed the bodywork for a lower coefficient of drag. Fiat says that it has achieved this through the dot matrix front fascia, bellypans underneath, new mirror caps and a rear spoiler. For the interiors, the 500e has a new electric orange colour with a distinct white colour. No official announcements though have been made till now as when the 500e will go on sale.
Jaguar officially unveiled the 2014 XFR-S at the 2012 LA Auto Show. The new Jag looks aggressive, sharp and poised. And all that angry aesthetic has purpose too. The chin helps provide adequate airflow into the engine bay, the side mouldings clean the air up around the car and the carbon fibre diffuser helps keep it stuck to the ground. Inside, it’s a lot more carbon. There’s even carbon effect leather. Power in the new car is up 40bhp over the XFR, and torque 55Nm, bringing the grand total to 550bhp and 68Nm from the 5.0-litre supercharged V8. The Jag will hit 100kph in just 4.4 seconds, and it will go up to the limited 300kph mark. The Jag’s eight-speed transmission comes packaged with tech developed for the impending F-Type called ‘Quickshift’. Quickshift aims to get you the quickest and crispest shifts when you want them by analysing road conditions, throttle and steering input. In the XFR-S they’ve replaced the silencer from the standard car with an X-piece and near straight-through rear pipes to give out some characteristic crackle on the overrun. The car’s also got 30 per cent stiffer, got a re-designed rear sub-frame, bigger brakes and wheels and a new set of rubber. This is Jaguar’s fastest ever saloon car!
NEW ROADSTER FROM LAMBO There are no buttons and no levers to magically whisk off the roof from this new Lamborghini Aventador Roadster, thus transporting you from the comfort of a V12 recording studio to a 691bhp open-air concert. You have to do it by hand! This is because the new Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster features a two-piece, carbon fibre roof that needs to be removed manually, before being carefully stowed away in the front. But it’s made from forged composites and is very light at just 6kg. A 6.5litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine produces some 691bhp and Lamborghini reckons that with the roof off, the new Aventador Roadster will go from 0-100kph in three seconds and hit a claimed 350kph. There’s a new power rear windscreen that controls the airflow over the car - as well as determining exactly how loud you want that V12 - and a removable wind deflector to keep things cosy in the cabin. The rear pillars have been redesigned, while the engine cover features a new design too. There’s even a two-tone finish to the Roadster along with new 20inch and 21inch lightweight, forged aluminium wheels front and back.

MERCEDES’ ENER-G-FORCE CONCEPT Mercedes has revealed a first set of images of their new Ener-G-Force SUV concept. Sources claim the Ener-G-Force is the forerunner to a new three strong line-up of Land Rover-rivalling off-roaders set to join its line-up in coming years, including a long-awaited replacement for the iconic G-class in production since 1979. Styled at Mercedes-Benz’s advanced design studio in California, the Ener-G-Force updates the functional go-anywhere appearance of the 33-year old G-class. The taut surfacing and lack of fanciful crease lines throughout the body helps provide the concept with a particularly tough appearance. The Ener-G-Force’s proposed driveline consists of four wheel-mounted hydrogen-powered electric motors.
WORLD’S FIRST E-ENDURO Italian firm Tacita has built an electric enduro motorcycle, the T-RACE, a liquidcooled bike that runs on a maintenance-free electric motor powered by lithium polymer batteries. Tacita claims the batteries that power T-RACE can be charged 2,000 times and are made to last through the motorcycle’s life cycle. Tacita has built its motorcycle to give out no emissions or noise and is the world’s first electric-powered enduro bike. Tacita entered the Merzouga rally in Morocco with the T-RACE to test this novel motorcycle and to collect as much data and test reliability. The T-RACE has also become the first electric enduro motorcycle to enter a rally raid race and finish successfully, winning a new energy category. T-RACE marks a step towards helping bike enthusiasts enjoy real world biking pleasures without being burdened with the rising costs of fuel.
MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER UNVEILED
TOYOTA ROLLS OUT 2013 RAV4
Mitsubishi introduced its new 7-seater Outlander at the 2012 LA Auto Show. The new SUV ditches the rather aggressive looking EVO face for a more sombre design. Mitsubishi says that this has resulted in the coefficient of drag being reduced by a significant percentage while the use of high-tensile steel has ensured a drop in weight by approximately 90kg. Mitsubishi also claims that the 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine mated to a CVT transmission makes it the one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs in its category. The premium GT variant has a 3.0-litre 24-valve V6 engine which is paired to a 6-speed auto transmission. Inside, the 2014 Outlander gets a new navigation system, 710-watt RockfordFosgate sound system, Forward Collision Mitigation systems, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning.
Toyota rolled out its all-new compact crossover RAV4 under the lights of the LA Auto Show. But Toyota will no longer offer sixcylinder power for the RAV4. The automaker announced that the standard power plant will be a 2.5-liter four-cylinder (rated at 176bhp and 233Nm) mated to a new six-speed automatic. Consumers will be offered a choice between front and all-wheel drive. Some other notable details include the elimination of the RAV4’s side-hinged rear door and signature spare tire. It has been replaced with a rear liftgate to improve convenience and space. Standard features on all models include a Display Audio with a 6.1-inch LCD touch screen, backup camera, Bluetooth connectivity, privacy glass and full power accessories. Pricing is to be announced at a later date.

“You’re a triple world champion. You’re the man. You are a triple world champion,” shouted Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner over the team radio as Sebastian Vettel crossed the finish line in the incident-packed wet and wild Brazilian Grand Prix. The German driver was recently crowned as the youngest consecutive triple world champion in F1 history. But the journey hasn’t been really easy for the young champion. Sebastian Vettel was born on 3 July, 1987 in Heppenheim, West Germany. Highly inspired by the three Michaels - Michael Schumacher, Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson - he initially wanted to be a singer. But destiny had a different plan for him. He started amateur go-karting at the age of three and by the age of eight he started to race professionally. By 2001, he emerged as the winner of various German and European Karting titles. At the age of 17, he debuted in the 2004 German Formula BMW Championship, and ended up with a stunning 18 victories from 20 races. Then in 2005, he drove for the ASL Mucke Motorsport in the Formula Three Euroseries and earned 5th position as well as the best rookie driver of the year. The same year he had his first encounter with F1 when he got to test a F1 car for the BMW Williams team. The following year, he ended up as a runner-up in the F3 Euroseries. He also won two World Series events by Renault during the same year. Due to his BMW connections, he was then promoted to BMW Sauber’s Friday test and reserve driver. Finally in 2007 he made his F1 debut and became the youngest driver to score a point when he replaced BMW’s Robert Kubica in the US Grand Prix. During the same year, he earned a full place in the Torro Rosso team. The following year he won the wet Italian Grand Prix and made another record becoming the youngest Formula One driver to win a pole position. In 2009 he switched to Red Bull, and finished the season on a high note becoming the runner-up in the drivers’ championship. The year 2010 then brought Vettel on a close showdown with other drivers in the championship. The tension-filled season was marred with technical difficulties and driver errors. But, his dramatic third-place comeback
www.autolife.com.np
at the Abu Dhabi grand prix managed to get him his first ever F1 world title. This gave him the title of the youngest world champion in the history of the 61-year sport, at the age of 23 years and 133 days. Red Bull Racing realizing his potential, then made no delay in extending his contract till 2014. He dominated the 2011 season too with 11 grand prix wins and a record 15 poles. He won the world championship for a second time with four races to spare and earned another feather in his helmet by, becoming the youngest double world champion in F1 history.
Vettel now stands as the youngest ever triple world champion and also the third driver to acquire threeConsecutive championships.
Vettel carried his form into the 2012 season but it took him time to adjust in the new RB8 race car. The season was much of a mixed bag with seven different winners in the first seven different races of the season. The final stages of the 2012 season then helped Vettel to retake the championship lead ahead of Fernando Alonso, with an astonishing come-back at Abu Dhabi. He finished the dramatic season in 6th position and wrapped up the championship with a 3 point lead over Alonso, earning him his third consecutive world championship. Vettel now stands as the youngest ever triple world champion and also the third driver to acquire three-consecutive championships. Vettel is going to continue his F1 run with Red Bull for the 2013 Season and we can expect more surprises and record from the young driver. Reports also suggest that Vettel could move to Ferrari in 2014 and this move might just bring back Ferrari’s winning days. It will be interesting to see how well Vettel defends the season ahead. Viel Glück Vettel! (Btw, that’s Good Luck in German)

iny Dancer is probably a song you don’t know, by a singer no one probably even listens to these days named Elton John. I like it very much, so the other day I was delighted when some wise and resourceful DJ played it on the radio on my way to work.
My delight soon turned to rage, however, because all of a sudden, and without even letting the song reach mid-way, a woman with the sort of voice you hear in daytime advertisements for banks announcing their deposit schemes interrupted to ‘remind’ the listeners about the hazards of drug abuse. How dare she! What gives her the right to barge in on one of my favourite songs, a song which is played on the radio only once every 25 years, to tell me about the effects of drug abuse, a subject I’m sure no one’s interested in including the drug addicts. I mean, listening to her repeat the same thing at least once every half hour actually makes you want to try that stuff if you already haven’t! All Local radio stations do this. They have the power to interrupt your listening pleasure with their irrelevant traffic reports, and none of them bother to turn off the ‘interrupt’ button when the announcement is over. They hope, of course, that you’ll be so impressed with their regular programming that you’ll continue to listen for the rest of your life. What you actually want to do is drive over and ram your car into their reception desk.
Stuck on a relatively empty highway behind a lame driver is equivalent to being gifted a powerful hunting rifle and forced to turn into a vegetarian. 28 AUTOLIFE
December 2012
My obsession with good sound whilst driving probably dates back to my first car that I owned during my college days: a worn down Toyota Datsun that barely made it from one end to the other. Somehow I scraped enough money to install two speakers and a Chinese player; which was all I could afford then. This will give you an idea of how bad the stereo really was. Once some thief broke into it, stole a rear light and some clothes lying on the back seat, but didn’t even bother stealing the music system. Absolute gooiness. And this gooiness is why I didn’t empty all the swear words in my vocabulary into the driver of the Kia Piccanto that obstructed my way for what seemed like a good 15 kms on the way to Gorkha. The driver looked old, and it was pretty hot. So although the road was smooth and empty and no slipperier than a sheet of salty sandpaper, I knew his reflexes were not as they had once been and therefore, 30 kms an hour on an empty highway made sense. In case you’re wondering, I’m being sarcastic. Stuck on a relatively empty highway behind a lame driver is equivalent to being gifted a powerful hunting rifle and forced to turn into a vegetarian. We see evidence of this intelligence everywhere we turn. Of course, there are still idiots who drive through the single lanes at 100 km/hr on their stupid ‘modified’ bikes, and there are still people who defy logic and buy the cheap Chinese imitations, but for the most part, all of humankind is bright and sassy and clever. Then again, if you’re stuck on an empty highway behind an idiot in his ‘compact’ car while a resourceful DJ interrupts your favorite song to squeeze in a ‘don’t do drugs’ announcement, not really. www.autolife.com.np

I was enjoying my breakfast before I started to type away at this review of the Nissan Sunny. Strangely, while finishing up my sunny side up poached egg, I discovered some stark similarities between the Sunny I test drove to Kakani the other day and the sunny side up egg on my plate. Of course, this is weird and I wouldn’t blame you for jumping to conclusions. But let me duly explain. How about the major bits on the Nissan Sunny first? EXTERIORS Beginning with the looks, the Nissan Sunny maintains a rather sober look with its elongated boxy design. Personally it really doesn’t have those lines to blow your mind but opinions might vary, as beauty always lies in the eyes of the beholder. What clearly makes this sedan stand out is its large cabin dimensions compared to its competitors in the segment. The front has been beautifully crafted with the generous bits of chrome in the grill and the big headlamps. In fact, when you look at the front from the side angles, it does resemble a bit of Nissan’s executive sedan Teana. And that’s definitely a good thing. But as the roofline slopes towards the boot, it gets a bit out of proportion. The elegant front doesn’t seem to gel well with the short boot which seems to end abruptly. The Sunny though is quite a large car with its long wheelbase and massive cabin. The car is based on Nissan’s ‘V’ or versatile platform just as the Micra hatchback, and the best thing about this platform is that it makes the Sunny astonishingly lightweight in spite of the bulk. Overall, the Sunny is a car that only grows on you as you observe from varying angles. But as far as its looks are concerned, it just doesn’t seem to break any new ground in the first impression. www.autolife.com.np

INTERIORS Inside, there’s no denying that the Sunny is a big car and does live up to its ‘It’s not just a car...It’s a CAAAR!’ advertorial tagline. The cabin is very much spacious and there’s truly enough room at the rear to rest cross-legged with one of the most generous legroom in its class. The Sunny’s rear seats also have a flip down arm rest with cup-holders, which adds to comfort, provided there are only two rear passengers. But thigh support isn’t so generous and headroom for tall passengers is slightly compromised by the sloping roofline. The front seats are comfortable with the perfectly contoured padding and finding a decent driving position is easy enough with the steering tilt-adjust and seat height adjustment options. The light grey fabrics and plastics with the brushed aluminium elements do a lot to enliven the cabin’s ambience and the overall fit and finish is good. But the rest of the cabin dashboard features are less than what you would call fancy. Elsewhere in the cabin though, Nissan has tried to make the cabin look up-market with the chrome-ringed dials, silver accents on the steering wheel and chrome door handles. Nissan has also come up with a unique improvised solution to improve cooling in the rear cabin. Rear passengers get a dedicated air circulation fan with vents which help to circulate the cool air blowing out of the front air-con vents faster. At the moment, the Sunny is available in Nepal only in its highestoption XV variant, and it comes well equipped with features like keyless entry, power windows, steering mounted audio controls, electrically folding mirrors, CD player with

aux-in, climate control, ABS, EBD and driver and passenger airbags. PERFORMANCE The Sunny’s 1.5-litre engine makes a decent 98bhp and 134Nm of torque. Though the motor’s cubic capacity is down from 1.6 litres as in the previous models, the car moves off the line quite briskly. The throttle responses are peppy and the best bit about this engine is how well it pulls from low speeds. Combined with the light clutch and short gear shifts, city driving is a breeze and power delivery is very consistent. But it isn’t as smooth when revved, because the motor gets quite thrashy past 6000rpm. The Sunny works best when you upshift early and drive it truly like how an ideal family sedan is supposed to driven. The engine feels smooth and there’s enough performance for highway cruising too. Even when there was the need to suddenly overtake or while climbing uphill towards Kakani, the motor
hardly called for any downshifting. Braking is via ventilated discs in the front and drums at the rear. It uses independently suspended MacPherson struts up front and a non-independent torsion beam axle at the rear, with anti-roll bars at both ends. The Sunny does feel a bit shaky at low speeds, but as you go faster, it settles down to offer a fairly flat and comfortable ride. For the sake of our kind of roads, it also comes with a rough road package that helps improve ground clearance. The steering is an electrically assisted system and the light steering makes manoeuvring through tight spaces in the city effortless and while on the highway the steering gains weight and makes the driver feel confident. The car offers decent body control with no nasty surprises and the handling is safe and predictable. Although, the Sunny is nice to drive and does everything you ask of it, it isn’t a particularly sporty car to drive. It is a stress-free family sedan to drive in the city and cruise along in the highways.

VERDICT
Now coming back to my egg relation, let me justify why the new Nissan Sunny is quite like a poached sunny side up egg. The best bit on a sunny side up egg is the tasty yellow yolk and the remaining egg whites are a simple affair. Similarly, the Nissan Sunny offers a much satisfying drive with the fine motor, handling and interior comfort. It has got a decent engine and offers a near perfect drive for a family sedan. But the rest of the car including the interiors and exteriors are a much simple affair when compared to its competitors. Also it does seem a bit overpriced when pitched against the other new mid-level sedans in the market, which have all raised the bar for what to expect from a modern sedan. The Sunny comes across as a sensible and bright choice with lots of potential. But at this level of competition, the pricing fails to make hay while the sun shines.

VIVA LA ‘X FUERA’ On November 20, 2012 Jorge Lorenzo was gracefully driven through the streets of Palma de Mallorca aboard a convertible car with his mother while thousands of fans welcomed him home. The victory parade ended at the headquarters of the government, where he was received and honoured by President José Ramón Bauzá. Obviously, he hadn’t won some political campaign or was just returning home from some exile. Popularly known as ‘X Fuera’ for his flamboyant outside overtaking style in GP racing, Lorenzo had again made his country proud by bringing home his second MotoGP World Championship title. Born on May 4th, 1987 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Lorenzo began riding motorbikes in the premises of his home at the tender age of three. Within months of taking to two wheels, he began competing in his first minicross races. Lorenzo graduated to road racing and national competition in 1997 and it didn’t take him long to adjust, winning the Aprilia 50cc Cup in 1998. Despite officially being too young, a special dispensation in 2000 allowed him to compete in the Spanish 125cc series at the age of 13. He made history the following year when competing in Europe by becoming the youngest ever winner of a European 125cc race. The teenager, once again showing that age was no limit to a quick rise up the ranks of motorbike racing, made his first foray onto the world stage with Derbi at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez in 2002. Jorge Lorenzo stormed onto the 125cc scene and worked his way up to being a title contender after only three seasons. He moved up to the 250 Moto GP class for 2005 and finished fourth in the championship that year. He then went on to become one of the most dominant 250 riders

over the next two seasons, and picked up a pair of 250 titles in ‘06 and ‘07. After proving his skills in the 125 and 250 class, he stepped up to the big leagues. He entered the premier class the following year in 2008 with the Factory Yamaha team, and claimed the Rookie of the Year title finishing 4th overall after a blistering debut - the most successful debutante since the start of the four-stroke era. Lorenzo set out to make 2009 a new era for his racing career, switching management and changing his long-time number of 48 to 99. In 2009, he finished runner-up behind team mate Valentino Rossi, winning four races and taking additional nine podiums. 2010 saw him convert his potential into a World Champion title after a season-long display of intelligent riding put him on the podium for the first 12 consecutive races and set a record for the largest points haul in a single season. The Mallorcan missed two races in 2011 season, but still managed to finish runner-up in the championship. In 2012, he put in a stunning performance that saw him placed no less than second in the races he finished. This led to him clinching his second premier-class title at Phillip Island with one race left, making him the first Spaniard with two top-flight World Championships.

Today, Spanish rider Jorge Lorenzo stands as a force to reckon with in Moto GP, becoming one of the most dominant Grand Prix riders in the paddock. In 2013, Lorenzo will continue his Moto GP conquest with Yamaha and it should be exciting to see how well he defends the title against other favourites, especially with past arch-rival Valentino Rossi now back in the same team.

upert and Jan Grey were recently in Kathmandu as a part of their 35th wedding anniversary expedition ride from Mumbai to Dhaka in a classic 1937 Rolls Royce. The 1937 Rolls Royce is an updated version of the 20/25 with larger engine and more power. It has an inline 6 cylinder 4.5 litre engine. The car has so far clocked more than 300,000 miles. Rupert inherited this Rolls from his father, who bought the car to London from Bangladesh after the Second World War. He re-built the mechanicals from the scratch. We were lucky enough to catch up with this man on a mission. This expedition is a part of the 6 month break that he takes every 10 years from his work. Their 35th wedding anniversary also happened to coincide during the same period and it took them almost six months to plan for this expedition.

Rupert is a prominent London based lawyer, photographer and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He represents many of the world leading photographic institutions and agencies. His photographs have been exhibited in the UK and Bangladesh as well as published in magazines like Vogue and the National Geographic Magazine. Currently, he is associated with Swan Turton, UK’s leading solicitor firm. While, Jan is a bereavement counsellor. They live in Sussex and have three daughters. The Grey family are popularly known for expeditions to remote parts of the world, including the Pamirs Mountain, the forests of Borneo, the rivers of Sumatra, the Canadian Rockies Mountain and the Arctic tundra region. Amazingly, every trip of theirs is a private expedition and they have been bearing the entire costs of the tour themselves. For this epic road trip, The Rolls was first shipped to Mumbai. It took them almost a week to get the car ready. Rupert recalls how he had to make almost 35 signatures to clear the car from the customs in India. Then they drove directly through the Gujarat plains to Udaipur and spent a week there. They were joined by Oliver, their grandson, who has been filming the trip for a documentary. They spent a whole month travelling around Rajasthan and were well received by the local www.autolife.com.np
Maharajas, who greatly value classic exotic cars. They had a brief time in Rajasthan where they had interesting conversations and dinners with the Maharajas regarding economics and problems about rural India. During their Rajasthan stay, the Rolls also encountered some problems in the ‘starter switch’ and ‘starter button’. This was fixed by Prabhu, a mechanic of vintage Rolls in Alsisar who spoke only one English word - Speed. He changed the spark plug and adjusted the carburettor. Rupert also recalled the generous carpenter and the blacksmith who refitted the door lock with new timber and built a new bracket for the windscreen. After a month, they headed to Jaipur where they stayed for a week. They also had a safety back up car generously lent by friends during most part of the journey. Along the way, they held interactions with various people of big corporations and also had a memorable dinner with Bunker Roy, a prominent Indian social activist, educator and a famous TED speaker. From Rajasthan, they headed towards Lucknow via Agra. In Lucknow, they stayed with an interesting Brahmin family for some days. From Lucknow, they headed towards Sunauli border point to enter Nepal. They entered Nepal from the Sunauli point. From Sunauli they headed to Kathmandu via Chitwan. Initially, they had planned to reach Guwahati via Bihar. But due to security reasons, they chose Nepal. Since, Rupert had last been to Kathmandu almost 30 years back, he felt amazingly awesome to be here again. The other
purpose to visit Kathmandu was to meet his good friends here in the capital. According to Rupert, Nepal has changed a lot. He was surprised to see the urban settlement increasing at such an alarming rate. During their ride, people flocked towards their car, took photographs and questioned funnily regarding the mileage of the car. During their Nepal stay, they went on a week-long trek to Pokhara. The main purpose of the trek was to enjoy a short break and enjoy the panoramic Himalayas. They returned to Kathmandu from Pokhara and after a couple of days, they headed towards Kakarvitta via Daman. There was also a helicopter filming of their journey in and around Daman. From Nepal, they moved towards Darjeeling and Kalimpong where they plan to stay in their friend’s tea-plantation farm for a couple of days. From Kalimpong, they will head towards Guhawati. Their daughter will join them there for Christmas and will together ride to Dhaka (Bangladesh) via the Tameable border point. Their plan is to reach Dhaka to attend the International Festival of Photography in January 2013, where Rupert will deliver two lectures, one on their journey and the other on the law of copyright from an international perspective. From Dhaka they will drive back to Kolkata (India) and either drive or ship the Rolls to the Chennai port. From the Chennai port, the car will be shipped back to London, marking the end of this epic drive on a classic car.

BASE BATTERIES IN NEPAL Aditya Arora, CEO Base Batteries Base Batteries was founded in the year 1987 as battery distributors of a private battery company in India. Base Batteries now has its own manufacturing plant and R&D facility at Solan, Himachal Pradesh and is spread across sprawling 32 acres amidst the scenic mountains and vast landscapes. BASE batteries were recently in the news after launching their first racing car battery for the Hispania Racing Team in Formula One and thus becoming the first Indian battery company to do so. After a stupendous growth in the Indian Battery Industry, Base Batteries have now entered into a new alliance with Nepalese distribution giant Agni Energy. Agni Energy Pvt. Ltd, a subsidiary company of Agni Incorporated Pvt. Ltd, recently launched India’s prominent BASE Batteries, UPS and Inverters in the Nepalese market. Base Batteries has one of the largest product portfolio in the power back up segment, and having understood the growing Automobile market in Nepal along with the frequent power cuts, the company is geared up to make an everlasting footprint in the local market in Nepal. The distribution partners had announced their alliance at an event and we caught with Mr. Aditya Arora, Chief Operating Officer at Base Batteries India, to learn more on his plans for Nepal.
1) In general what does “BASE” think about the Nepalese market? What are the strengths and threats? After our initial research, Nepal looks to be a very fruitful market for our lead-acid batteries due to its growing sales of two and four wheelers along with long hour power cuts caused by local conditions. The Nepalese market holds a huge potential for our Home UPS Systems and batteries. Batteries are an alternate power back up resource to Diesel Generators, which have become an environmental hazard. But there are certain regions here that have up to 18 hours of power shortage. So the obvious threat to us is that the batteries may not get enough time to fully charge before they are discharged once again and this has a direct effect on the products life. So for warranted products such as ours, the free-of-cost replacement might be higher for us in Nepal. However we consider this to be a small hic-up in a very large pool of potentials.
2) Which specific product line is the company focusing on particularly for Nepal, amongst your wide range of products from Automotive, UPS, Industrial, Solar, Generator to Home sectors? Apart from the large variety of automotive batteries, our main focus will be to push our Home UPS systems and Batteries. We believe our Generator products will also have a good impact on the local market due to aggressive pricing in that range.
3) There are many other batteries manufacturers in the market. But why should an individual opt for BASE batteries? How does a BASE battery stand out from its competitors? Base is the only battery manufacturer with a complete range of products, with all R&D and products home-grown in India to cater to specific needs in the region. Most companies would tie up with larger MNCs and replicate their technology. But the Indian market conditions are very different from anywhere else in the world. We have bad roads (leading to higher vibrations), temperate climates (humidity fluctuation) and a battery for us in
44 AUTOLIFE
December 2012
general is a “Fit it and forget it” type of product. Keeping all these usage hazards in mind, each Base Battery is tweaked to give the best suitable performance in these conditions. We consider the Nepalese market not very different from the Indian market, and we are confident the success we have seen locally in India would get replicated in Nepal as well.
4) Will the company launch any tailored-made products especially designed for the Nepalese Market? Currently, we will give the Nepalese market only the tried-andtested products of Base, keeping in mind we are just foraying into a new market and experimenting might have a direct affect on brand reputation, which will play an important role for growth. But once our identity and loyalty is established, by means of research we will try and discover what product might impact the market, and then prototype, test and launch accordingly. This would be completely based on the emerging demand trends we see as time progresses.
5) Where does the company position itself in the Nepalese market 1-2 years from now? We have designed an aggressive penetration strategy to take on the market leader in the first year itself. We are aiming at capturing up to 10% market share in the first year, and with stabilization in the second year, we look to stand at a 15% stable market share from year two onwards targeting a growth of 15-20% henceforth.
6) Lastly, congratulations on launching the first ever F1 car batteries in India in collaboration with the Hispania Racing Team. How is the initial feedback considering F1 is a global sport and is crucial for the company’s brand image also? Is the company planning to associate with the other F1 teams too? Yes we are currently in talks with other 4 teams who are testing and evaluating our products. Though nothing can be disclosed right now, we hope things will materialize with them, and we would go to become the only company in the world to supply batteries to 5 F1 teams consecutively in one season. www.autolife.com.np

When Emergency Calls WORDS: AYUSH DHAUBANJAR PHOTOS: NIREN TULADHAR
The primary purpose of an ambulance is to carry the sick and injured safely to the hospital. But frankly, the plight of most ambulances in the country is less than convincing for the task in question. You are strapped down on a stretcher and made to endure a rather bumpy and uncomfortable ride with usually even the basic life-sustaining drugs and equipment not available. And taking a bumpy ride to the local medical facility in ageing ambulances isn’t really the most reassuring feeling when being one is fighting for his/ her life. Luxury accommodation service in medical care is already a big business in most parts of the world. Similarly, luxury ambulance service is another mushrooming concept that has been evolving over the years. Mitsubishi in Nepal

The unique selling point of the Pajero as an ambulance is that it will function not only as a premium emergency response vehicle, but is also highly capable to collect emergency patients from rural areas accessible by off-roads. The Pajero’s off-road capabilities combined with the maximum rear space, optimum medical equipments and brisk performance makes it an exceptional ambulance. The Pajero Ambulance is probably one of the most luxurious ambulance services available in Nepal. Sure it is a bit expensive when compared to the other ambulances from Indian manufacturers, but as medical sectors are entitled to duty free exemptions from the government, hospitals can still afford to have access to such a premium vehicle with the nearly negligible import and customs duties on ambulances. Otherwise, as a relatively cheaper bargain, the trusted Japanese manufacturer also offers the Mitsubishi L300 Ambulance. A couple of hospitals have already taken the delivery of these custom-designed Pajero Ambulances to use as their premium medical emergency transport and in time we expect the numbers to increase. God forbid, but in case of a personal medical emergency, this definitely is the kind of ambulance that I would love to be picked up in! www.autolife.com.np

Two generations of radical bikers face off in this rubberburning action drama from the year 2003. Manuel “Smoke” Galloway is the leader of the Black Knights, an underground motorcycle club. Smoke is the undefeated champion in the underground world of off-track motorcycle racing and is reputedly known as the ‘King of Cali’. Other heads of rival motorcycle clubs have challenged him, but they have always lost. One night, during a motorcycle race between Smoke and his latest challenger, a freak accident occurs. In the midst of the race, the biker loses control and as the bike flies away, it hits Smoke’s mechanic Slick Will and kills him instantly. Kid, one of the club’s young prodigies and son of Will, blames Smoke for his father’s death. Kid wants to take on the Black Knight leader and sets out to become the best biker to carry on his father’s name and reputation. But Smoke won’t race him until he joins a club and wins enough races to build his reputation. So he and several fellow outcast riders start their own club, the Biker Boyz. Smoke and other club leaders accept the new club. Their main goal is to win enough races so that Kid can eventually challenge Smoke. On the other hand Kid’s mom, Anita does not really appreciate her son racing, since it is what killed her husband. Kid goes on to become a familiar racer with his custom-powered bike and wins several races. In the midst of all this, Kid realizes that Smoke is his real father, but still does not lose the focus to race Smoke. As the story builds up, Smoke agrees to finally race him. However, a condition is set that whoever loses will never race again. On the day of the race, both the crew of the Black Knights and the Biker Boyz arrive. Smoke and Kid race on a farm with open fields. With the finish line in sight, it is obvious that Smoke will win. However filled with emotions, he decides to slow down and let Kid win the race, becoming the new ‘King of Cali’. Kid tells Smoke to hang onto his crown for a while, and that he’ll come and get it someday.

As good as Memphis is, he knows this job is far too big for just one man. So he reluctantly tracks down the members of his old team to join him in one final fling to save Kip. With the minimum of preparation time, the plan is put into action. To add to his woes, detectives Castlebeck and Drycott are tipped off about the operation and lie in wait. As the thefts begin, Memphis saves a 1967 Custom Fastback Mustang codenamed Eleanor, for the last. Memphis had unsuccessfully tried to steal the same model car numerous times in the past but each attempt ended badly. The detectives catch Memphis in the act of stealing Eleanor and a highspeed chase ensues. The exciting chase ends when Memphis jumps the car over a traffic jam on a bridge. Memphis arrives at Calitri’s salvage yard 12 minutes after the deadline. Calitri and Memphis argue over the deadline and the condition of the car, which sustained damage during the police chase. Calitri is interrupted by the arrival of Detective Castlebeck, who has learned of Memphis’s true reasons for pulling the job. Memphis manages to kill Calitri by pushing him over a railing. Castlebeck lets Memphis go and in return he tells him where the stolen cars are. The film ends at a barbecue held by Memphis’s crew in celebration of the success of the job.
Biker Boyz is an action-packed thrill ride that comes out fast and never slows down.
Gone in 60 seconds is an interesting movie of a master car thief who has his skills pushed to the limit.

nspired by AC Farias (the godfather of stunt biking), Chris ‘CP’ Pfeiffer is not a new name in the gravity-defying street bike freestyle stunting world. Born on April 20th 1970 in the Bavarian town of Schongau, Germany, CP inherited the riding genes from an early age. The passion for two-wheels started after his father gifted him a modified Sachs 100 motorcycle at the age of five. In the following years, his riding career progressed forwards earning the German Trial Champion title in the junior division. He did amateur trials until 1992 and from 1993 onwards, started trial biking. In 1996, he moved to professional riding and participated in a variety of events. It was only after 2000 that the stunt guru started big bike stunting. The transformation from a regular off-road motorcyclist to an excellent stunt rider took place when he was recuperating from an injury. During the period, he stumbled upon some old VHS cassettes of the legendary Brazilian stunter, AC Farias and since then there has been no looking back. Within a very short period, he achieved new heights in the stunt world and went on to earn many important titles and championships. He now holds a record of four ‘Stunt Riding World Championship’ and ‘Stunt Riding European Championship’ each. Besides that he is the winner

of Extreme Enduro Race Championship and many other worldwide honours. The infamous 115-degree wheelie performed during the 2004 Stunt Wars not only won him the competition, but also earned him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. He has also won the Erzberg Rodeo, the hardest off road race in the world. He is the only man in history to have scaled the Level 3 difficulty scale climb in Italy, on his motorbike. He also has a record for the longest jump over 33 people lying next to each other without a ramp. However, a fatal crash once nearly ended his career, when he crashed for the first time in his career while trying to break his own record. But setbacks like these only motivated him further to train harder and just after 13 months he won the ‘Erzberg 2000’, outclassing the world’s best Enduro riders. For Chris, stunt riding is about not only style, acrobatics and motorcycle control but also outstanding locations, fluidic performance and a tremendous interaction with the crowds. His choice of bizarre stunt locations like the BMW Tower in Germany, the arc of a bridge in France and an ice-track in Bosnia and Herzegovina never fails to surprise on-lookers. This Red Bull and BMW sponsored rider is already a global phenomenon having performed in far-flung locations spread over 66 countries. His globetrotting act always gets him fantastic reception with his personalized fluidic display of awesome acrobatics on motorcycles. Whether it is a standing wheelie or his signature stoppie to kiss on the emcee’s cheek, he keeps pushing his limits shocking the fans with amazing daredevil stunts. The necessity to advance www.autolife.com.np
never stops for him as he always does some electrifying stuff in his shows. Many young riders have taken up street bike freestyle riding as a professional career motivated by his progress. His first ever DVD “CP Moto Freestyle” released in 2004 sent shock waves in the stunting world and landed him nomination in the “Xtremmy Awards”, the Oscars equivalent of extreme sports entertainment. Still, there are few things that people might not know about this great freestyle athlete. A father of three, Chris holds a dual degree in Sports and Biology from the University of Munich. When he has a show abroad, his BMW F800 R motorcycles are shipped two weeks in advance. Sometimes he himself packs his motorcycles into the shipping crates, connects the battery, adds fuel, etc. Chris always travels with two motorcy-
cles and most of the time with his trusted mechanic and friend, Hans. He also has a diversified taste in music from hip-hop to rock, classical and folk music and can play the accordion and clarinet. He is equally passionate about skiing, MTB, endure and trial riding. He has competed in few mountain biking competitions too. Chris is a rider who innovates in every show with new tricks and styles leaving the least margin for errors. His marvellous showmanship and charismatic persona has gained him die-hard followers amidst passionate motorcyclists. Well, that was about the man in words. But if you still haven’t actually witnessed CP flawlessly play around with his bike, better not waste time and gape in awe as the stunt guru shows you his ballerina on wheels in the various video clips spread across YouTube. All this explanation above would then easily make more sense!

How to do a stoppie 1. Approach in 1st gear, pull the clutch in, lift your back slightly and instantly hit the front-brake hard. 2. The tail of the bike should lift up due to over-braking. Be sensitive enough to keep the line and balance by moving your upper body to the left or right respectively. 3. The steeper the stoppie, the further you’ll go. So avoid doing front flips. 4. Keep the clutch pulled in while touching down the rear-wheel. The momentum created by lifting the body at the lift-off (as seen in picture #1) makes the whole thing a lot easier. With improved skills, you can do a stoppie even in less grippy conditions or wet tarmac.
lessons FROM THE GURU HIMSELF TIPS
1. Get off any public street. Try this on a safe area. 2. Look for a clean practice place with a grippy surface. 3. You’ll need to concentrate on the essence of the stunt. 4. Always wear proper and safe riding gears.

How to do a wheelie 1. Approach in 1st gear, bring your upper body to an upright position, throttle slightly while pulling back on the bar with straight arms. At the same time, open the throttle or shoot the clutch hard at mid-revs. 2. Use only one (index) finger for any clutch wheelie; you’ll need other fingers to hold on to the bike. Get your right foot in the ready-to-brake position. 3. After a while, try to get closer to the tipping-point by applying the throttle and the rear-brake at the same time. The tipping point (maximum angle) is your target which can be reached as soon as you ride the wheelie for some distance. 4. Close the throttle and hit the rear brake to drop the front of the bike down again.

THE TRAFFIC WEEK 2012 PHOTO COURTESY: METROPOLITAN TRAFFIC POLICE DIVISION, RAMSHAHPATH
T
he Metropolitan Traffic Police Division had organised an awareness week with initiatives ranging from traffic awareness to sanitation campaigns in Kathmandu Valley on the occasion of the 7th Metropolitan Police Day. The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division and its branch offices in the valley successfully conducted the Traffic Week from November 22-29, 2012. The awareness week meant to minimise the loss of lives and properties in traffic accidents, included cultural rallies, display of banners with traffic awareness messages, new regulations and pamphlet distributions. To mark the beginning of the Traffic Week, a huge rally was organized with support from different social organizations and under the inauguration of the Inspector General of Police, Kuber Singh Rana. The participants of the rally held banners and placards with various slogans for raising public awareness on traffic rules and road safety written on them. The week long programs ranged from Traffic Policemen riding on public vehicles to educate traffic rules, pollution test on vehicles, public interaction sessions, a motorcycle rally, dramas and documentary screenings, health camp on orthopaedics, eye check up camps for drivers/helpers, free distribution of face masks to display of publicity materials on the importance of various traffic rules. In addition to these activities, personnel from Traffic FM 95.6 MHz indulged in conducting several live awareness programs at various places. Various traffic awareness hoarding boards were also removed from most areas in the Valley as many of the billboards, put up by sponsors to spread traffic awareness to the general public, were rather being misused mainly for commercial gains. Along with the Traffic Police, students of various schools and colleges joined hands as volunteers to help in educating and enforcing traffic rules at various points around the capital. Thoughtfully, candles were also lighted in the closing ceremony of the event, to wish eternal peace to all those departed souls killed in road accidents. The Metropolitan Traffic Police Sector of Durbar Marg was awarded for Best Performance in Traffic Management. Addressing the concluding session of the Traffic Week, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar lauded the role of police in traffic management and expressed belief that the Traffic Week would help reduce road accidents.

new traffic regulations In order to manage the traffic congestion and enhance behavioural aspect of both traffic police and the people in the Kathmandu valley, the Metropolitan Traffic Police unveiled a few priorities after the closing of the Traffic Week which will come into effect very soon. Here is a look at some of the major one: - Campaigns against driving under influence (DUI) to get stricter. The police will test drivers for DUI both during days and late into the nights. The records of drunk drivers will be archived and maintained in the Police Clearance Report, which is necessary for people going abroad. The license of the drivers who are caught driving under influence more than five times will be suspended. - A tighter control to be implemented for obtaining driving license. Those seeking licenses will have to give trial on the same type of vehicle that they want to get license for. As per the new regulations, the aspirants might have to match even the engine power of the vehicle. - Extra efforts will be made to bridge the lapses in understanding and implementation of traffic rules. Initiatives will be taken to make people more aware about traffic rules and implement them strictly to minimize accidents. The general public can also address their grievances directly to the Metropolitan Traffic Police Chief every Sunday of the week from 2-3pm on Metro Traffic Police FM 95.6. - Plain clothed traffic police, including high ranking officers, will be deployed in public vehicles of various routes in the valley to teach traffic related rules to passengers and drivers and to check on violations. A sizable number of traffic cops in civvies will be out on the road as well to keep vigil on rule violators who play hide and seek with on-duty cops in uniform. - To set up a fixed maximum speed limit within the valley and monitor violators through the use of radar guns. A maximum speed limit of 60kmph has already been fixed for the Koteshwor-Suryabinayak section of the Arniko Highway. Traffic policemen will also penalize drivers/riders who violate the proper lane riding/driving regulations and stress on the disciplined use of roads. - To strictly regulate the modification on motorbikes and vehicles, unwanted parking, pick-up and drop activities and financial irregularities within the institution by making financial transactions and sponsorships transparent.

e all go through our daily grind trying to find equilibrium between college, work, bills, relationships, family, etc. But if you’re anything like me, it all gets old and you desperately need to escape the daily hustle. In 2007, I had packed my bags and left Nepal in pursuit of a college degree in USA. Over the years, I constantly missed riding through the scenic windy roads back home and attaining that ‘Zen’ state of mind, which I always gracefully found in touring on a motorcycle. So one fine morning, I decided to get myself a motorcycle and head out on my biggest adventure yet. I was planning to move from Ohio to New York to be reunited with my fiancée, and there didn’t seem to be a better route for my first ever motorcycle tour in USA. On a tight budget, I managed to acquire a 1994 Honda XR650L (hereafter called ‘Infidel’) for a mere $1800. After a month of planning, I ended up with a tour map that plotted nearly 3200km through 10 beautiful U.S States. Thinking about the deep valleys, mountains, muddy trails and interstate highways that I would be riding across, I felt like a carefree child again. DAY 1: OHIO TO KENTUCKY After a long night of a farewell party with close friends, I woke up to a pretty

late start at 9am in the morning. As the Infidel warmed up to take me on this epic adventure, I loaded it up, stacking one item over the other. All my possessions were sold for a fresh start in New York and everything I owned was now strapped on to the back of this sturdy Japanese off roader. I began my journey south of Columbus, Ohio towards Mammoth Caves National Forest in Kentucky. This was a mere 500km journey, but I had a personal rule for this tour; I would not take any highways unless absolutely necessary. Sure the American highways are designed to take you from point A to B in the fastest and most convenient way possible, but this tour was all about creating a memorable adventure and recalling the Nepal like countryside vistas. So I took a detour through the Hocking Hills State Forest, which in my opinion has the most amazing scenic routes accompanied by some pretty amazing tourist sites in Ohio. After riding for nearly an hour, I revisited Ash Cave and spent some time under the massive Cedar Falls. I then navigated the windy roads and soon crossed the border into Kentucky. With vacant homes, motels and abandoned swimming pools through the small towns, it looked like sets out of a Zombie Apocalypse movie. As the dark clouds started rolling in at a distance, I stopped for a fuel top up. Looking at my loaded bike, a large gentleman approached me and asked me in his thick southern accent, “Where ya headed boy?” I jokingly responded, “Wherever the roads take me”, and with a smirk on his face he called me ‘a crazy son of a Kangaroo’. Unsure of what that really meant, I took it as a compliment and rode on. Almost an hour

away from my camp site, I was greeted by the dark clouds and had the opportunity to try out my new rain gear before arriving at the Mammoth Cave National Park. I pitched my one man tent, got a warm fire going and had a filling dinner with the few people at the camping ground before calling it a night. DAY 2 & 3: MAMMOTH CAVES, KENTUCKY Thanks to the storm last night, the forest looked lush green and everything I owned was now wet. I quickly had a cloth-drying line set up and hung my clothes out in the traditional Nepali style. After a quick chat with the forest ranger regarding the park, I then set out to scan the forest area. A short ride from the campgrounds led me to the Green River Ferry; one of the very few ferries that are still in operation today in the U.S. The ferry could carry 3 cars at a time and honestly it was quite fascinating to hitch a ride across the river on it. In the 50km off road ride through the forest I came across abandoned cemeteries, and witnessed a couple of deers, skunks, rabbits, etc in their natural habitat. Later in the day, I took part in the historical tour of one of the main caves at the centre of the forest. It was truly impressive to see how much the government and locals had done to preserve this historical site related to the famous American Civil War of 1861. While walking through the cave, I couldn’t help but think about the various historic sites back in Nepal that have been left neglected by the government. I then returned back to camp and spent the night taking swigs from a bottle of fine bourbon whiskey that had been bought from the original Jack Daniels Distillery nearby. www.autolife.com.np

The next day I woke up to loud thunders and heavy rainfall. I was hoping to continue on my trip but Mother Nature had other plans for me. Due to the heavy winds, Infidel had tipped over and with the rain cover blown off into the wilderness all my belongings strapped to the bike was wet again. For the second day in a row I attempted to dry off everything and had to extend my stay at the park. I spent the day grabbing new maps from the local store and performing minor repairs on the weather-beaten motorcycle. DAY 4: KENTUCKY TO TENNESSEE Back in college, whenever I described Nepal to my American friends, they would always tell me that I had to visit The Great Smoky Mountains. So I made my way 400km south towards the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. The sun was up and though it was scorching hot the entire day, cruising at 60mph on the empty back roads provided some amount of relief from the Terai like southern heat. Unlike the dogs and cows in Nepal, my path had foxes, snakes and turtles keeping my reflexes on high alert. Although the Infidel had a poorly designed seat which forced me to stop every 100km, it gave me the opportunity to scan the map for nearby landmarks that would be of interest to me. During one of these stops I discovered Lake Cumberland. It was a decision well made, as the lake turned out to be almost similar to the Phewa Lake back in Pokhara. After lunch by the lake, I rode through some pretty rough roads before arriving at my camping ground in Cades Cove, Tennessee.

For the first time in my life I was in bear country! DAY 5 & 6: THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS Having seen a bear so close to my site, I was up most of the night with my hand firmly holding on to the trusty 12-inch Khukuri anchored to my belt. I sure didn’t want to end up as a bear snack and jumped out of my tent as soon as the sun came up. After a quick breakfast, I got back on the motorcycle and headed out to explore the surrounding areas. There was a dirt road going through the valley of Cades Cove and that is exactly what I was expecting. Fortunately I didn’t have any encounters with the big black bears and after exploring the area, I headed back to the campsite. The Great Smoky Mountain Area pretty much lived up to my expectations with its lush mountain landscapes similar to Nepal. I then had a quick dinner by the fireside and retreated back into my nylon tent for the night, holding on to the mighty Khukuri. The next morning I was a little too excited. I was finally going to ride the world famous Deals Gap Road, popularly known as ‘Tail of the Dragon’ to motoring enthusiasts. Many riding/ driving enthusiasts from all around the world come to test their skills on this 18km stretch of windy road which boasts 318 skill testing curves. So I set out to tame the dragon for the first time. I came across plenty of sports bike riders who were pushing the limits and along with them I found myself enthusiastically going at 70mph in the posted 30mph zone. It was indeed the biggest rush of adrenalin I had felt in a very long time. After the end of the road, I stopped for a quick bite at the Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort. I then rode the Infidel through the Tail of the Dragon yet again as it was the only road heading back towards my campground. With a big grin on my face, I safely reached back to my tent and called it a night, looking at my genuinely earned ‘I Survived the Dragon’ badge. DAY 7: BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY After a quick breakfast with the campsite neighbours, I continued on my ride towards the Blue Ridge Parkway. www.autolife.com.np

In order to get there I had to ride through the Deals Gap Road again and thundered ahead happily. I then entered the Blue Ridge Parkway which is a 755km stretch of scenic road that rides the back of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The roads lead up towards the high peaks and showed no signs of dipping back at any point. Around every corner was a soul pleasing view of the mountain ranges in the region, giving away spectacular views. Immediately, I truly understood why many bikers had asked me to ride the Parkway. As I continued on my ascent north towards New York, the storms rolled in one more time. Due to the harsh winds and painfully cold rain, I had to stop and seek shelter in a hotel for the night. DAY 8: NEW YORK After spending nearly a week in a compact tent out in the wild, it was beyond magnificent to finally have the luxury of a soft warm bed and hot shower. The storms showed no signs of slowing down and I still had almost 800km between me and New York. Over the days I had
experienced a good deal of adventure, and I was quite sad to learn that the tour was now coming to an end. Playing it safe, I decided to use the highways for the first time during the tour. The rain furiously kept lashing down on me and I had to stop every hour to drain water out of my boots. After countless stops and a punishing ride in near zero visibility weather, I finally arrived safely at the doorsteps of my new home, like a wet mouse. Overall, the entire tour was a blast. Though the last leg of the tour was a disappointment, it turned out to the biggest and most exciting adventure of my life yet. I hope my story inspires all of you to escape from the usual humdrum and take upon your own adventure at some point in life. Let me end in the words of the great Mark Twain – “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover”.

COMMANDMENTS FOR NIGHT RIDING As much as I’d like to deny it myself, bicycling at night is definitely a risk in the roads of Kathmandu. In fact, there will be a whole lot that will tell you that riding a bicycle isn’t safe during the day, let alone at night. You can stop nodding your head in approval because for some it may not just be about their passion but a necessity. If you decide to ride to work during the day, you’ll probably be returning home after the sun has set. Especially during the winter when there just aren’t enough hours of daylight in a day. Now, listing out the problems about riding in Kathmandu would require a parchment longer than Draupadi’s sari. But here are a few commandments to follow and make riding your bike at night just a little bit safer.
I
“Thou shall travel familiar roads” The potholes of the roads in Nepal are what nightmares are made of. And they have a way of camouflaging themselves even better at night. So make sure you plan out a route that you know well if you are planning to ride at night. Apart from knowing where the potholes are, you will have the advantage of knowing the small gullies that we have in our country from where cars, bikes, people and sometimes cows appear magically.
II
“Thou shall be wary of stray dogs.” Troublesome dogs are always a pain when you are on a motorbike or a cycle. They can be of a greater nuisance at night. It’s not unlikely to find packs of stray dogs loitering in the streets lying in wait of an unsuspecting passer-by to bark at. Most of the time these dogs just bark and run besides you while you are cycling. The standard procedure is to remain calm and maintain your speed and ride away. But there is always that dog short of a full deck who is determined to take a chunk out of you. So it may be a good idea to high tail your behind out of their territory. But it is important to remember to not panic; taking a fall with a rabid beast on your tail would definitely make your day (night) hell.
III
“Thou shall wear, luminescent attire to make thyself more prominent in the dark.” Reflectors. Well it won’t fend off “iron demons” but it will make you more visible to cars and bikes when riding at night. You can get reflectors for your bike in most bicycle shops. To get reflectors for your jacket you can visit cycle accessories store around the city or you can get one of your friends abroad to get you a proper reflective jacket.
74 AUTOLIFE
December 2012
www.autolife.com.np
IV
“Thou shall not disobey common road rules.” It is necessary to follow the basic road rules, especially at night when the dangers are higher. Always travel in the same direction of traffic and stay a meter away from curbs and parked cars. Watch for sewer grates and deep potholes, which can throw you over your handlebars. Give the right of way to pedestrians. Use hand signals when turning or stopping. Look down the road for hazards. Bicycles blend into the environment, so always assume you are hard to see. Also, be wary of drunk drivers because despite the constant efforts of the Nepal Traffic, there are bound to be a few idiots on the road.
V
“Thou shall use proper lighting while riding thy bicycle at night.” Using proper lighting is not only important for you to see the road ahead but to make yourself seen by other drivers on the road. There are ranges of different type of lights that can be found in many leading bike stores in the city. Headlights are perfect for you to see where you are going but they are not good indicators to let others know where you are. It is important to have highly visible taillights (a blinking light is preferred). It is a good idea to ensure that your lights are working before you leave home especially if you are leaving at daylight. It would suck to find out that your lights aren’t working in the middle of a Kalimati’s traffic jam. If you are stopped at an intersection and a car approaches from the side, angle your headlight slightly in that direction so the driver can see you.
VI
“Thou shall avoid riding in bad traffic.” No matter how cautious you are, you can never be completely sure of what is going to happen. So, it is a good idea to avoid areas with very large and fast moving traffic, for instance: the Ring road.
There are many idiots on the road, make sure you are not amongst them. Following these guidelines may not guarantee 100% safety, but it will definitely reduce the risks of riding at night. Always remember to be sensible and use proper common-sense to avoid any mishaps.

PS: Kathmandu Cycle City (KCC) 2020 is the voice raised by the cyclists to ensure that a proper cycling lane is implemented in Kathmandu. But the main motif is to make Kathmandu a cycle friendly city by the year 2020. According to statistics, there are more people who travel in cycles than in cars or bikes. Yet they are undermined and not given their due rights. Currently, the government has given us hope about a cycling lane being implemented from Maitighar Mandala to Tinkune and KCC 2020 hosted our annual rally on December 1, 2012, to commemorate the notion and make people aware of it. Also, with the notice given by the government to the cyclists, it is necessary to keep urging the government to not forget their commitment because such promise has been made in the past too. AL: What do you think is the cause behind the government to neglect the voice of the cyclists? PS: The bitter truth is, the mentality of the people in general. Cyclists have always been perceived as people who are very low on the financial chain of command. People think that it is only the people in the lower strata of the society who ride cycles and for some reason they do not seem to deserve the same notice as other riders on the road. But it should not be forgotten that even rich people are now drifting towards cycling due to health and environmental concerns. The government too seems to be too busy catering to other things, forgoing the fact that cycling is the most used mode of transportation and is still the most dangerous. Also, Kathmandu works in a very peculiar way. It is the duty of the Metropolitan to plan and build roads. But in reality, it is the contractors that decide on the road construction blueprints and this is where the problem arises.
Pick a day in the week to ride your bike to work and around the city. That would be a good start to a better health, economy and environment.
AL: It would be great to see Kathmandu become a cycle friendly city. But how practical do you think the idea is in terms of Nepal? PS: It all depends on whether you want to do it or not. And there is plenty of potential. If you look at Chakrapath for instance, the sides of the pitch road have been dedicated to parking lots, unorganized bus stops and vendors selling fruits and cigarettes. Now, if even just a little effort is put in, it is possible to carve out 26kms of cycling lane on each side. That is 52kms of available cycling lane! Furthermore, cycling is considered to be dangerous in Nepal only due to the lack of proper cycling lanes. It is highly unlikely to be involved in a fatal cycling accident unless a larger vehicle is involved (example car, motorbikes etc). AL: What is your say on cycling? PS: Not only does cycling sound good on paper, it also does wonders practically too. There are direct and indirect implications via cycling in the most vital aspects of life: health, economic and environment. Cycling has its obvious benefits on your health so you do not have to waste money on health clubs. Riders/Drives can further save money on monthly fuel bills and vehicle maintenance costs. Lastly, the environmental benefits go without saying. AL: After all that you did, you still face some sort of criticism. How does that make you feel? PS: Scepticism was there from day one. Even before I started my journey people were pointing fingers at me. The absurdities of the accusations were preposterous. I was shot during the People’s Revolution of 1990, but I survived. I went on to graduate, but rather than settling down to work, I wanted to see the world. So I decided to embark on my journey and people thought I had lost my mind. But there are always good and bad people in this world. That is just the way it is. Actress Sharmila Malla was one of the good ones. She had bought me the cycle that I travelled the world on. AL: By the way, do you still ride your world tourer bicycle? PS: No, it is currently resting in storage. And I don’t plan on selling it either. In fact, I am hoping to give it to Nepal’s Museum for collection. AL: What else have you been doing for the cycling community? What plans do you have for the future? PS: I have been constantly trying to spread awareness about the importance of cycling amongst youngsters through rallies in various places like Dolkha, Charikot, Lumbini, Pokhara, Sauraha, etc. People have found their love for cycling through these rallies and that makes me happy. In the future, I plan to see more of my country and ride on the Great Himalayan Trail from West Darchula to East Taplejung. AL: What message do you have for the readers of AutoLife? PS: To save the environment, it is not enough to just plant trees. You need to drastically decrease emissions. Pick a day in the week to ride your bike to work and around the city. That would be a good start to a better health, economy and environment.

KCC 2020 Cycle Action Day
I
n the year 2000, a plan was proposed plan to build a bicycle lane from Maitighar to Tinkune. In 2005, the government decided to construct a 44 km long bicycle track around the city after signing the Velo Mondial Charter and Action Plan for Bicycle Friendly Communities. The charter provided a blueprint that set directives to promote bicycles as an efficient and environment friendly alternatives to motorised transport. Later, the state also announced another ambitious plan to build cycle lanes on all roads in the valley which are over 22 metres wide.” Nearly a decade has passed and a whole new 6 lane highway has already been built. But there is still no cycling lane in sight. It seems like the heights of procrastination has been hiked up to a whole new level by our government. Conditions dropped down to new embarrassing lows when an internationally renowned wildlife biologist and environment conservationist, Prahlad Yonzon, was hit by a truck while cycling back home. But sadly, even his demise has not been able to jolt the government into action. Not only this, but it seems that the Yonzon has lost the case in court as well.

December 2012
Nevertheless, in an effort to reduce Kathmandu’s growing air pollution and promote a cycling culture, a passionate group of youth has set out to make the capital a cyclefriendly city by the year 2020 - Kathmandu Cycle City (KCC) 2020. The group formed by Kathmandu University students in 2009, have been actively promoting cycling through various events and workshops. KCC, along with World Cyclist Foundation Nepal, Nepalese Youth for Climate Action, Cycle City Network Nepal, Come On Youth Stand Up, Nepal Youth Council, Bibekshil Nepali Manch, Step for Miles and Rotaract Club organized a Cycle Action Day on the 1st of December 2012. The main aim was to pressurize the government and relevant authorities to finally begin building a cycle lane from Maitighar to Tinkune. And with the road expansion plans working in full swing, there could not be a better time to urge the government to put their decade old plans into action. A cycle mosaic was followed by a bicycle parade during the event where World Cyclist/Mt. Everest summiteer Pushkar Shah requested the government of Nepal to make cycle lane on the possible areas. The event successfully ended with Chief Secretary of Government of Nepal, Mr. Lilamani Poudyal, assuring cyclists that the needful would be done very soon. Let’s hope that this promise won’t be pushed back another decade.

winter riding tips
A
According to popular research, 8 out of 10 people would want to kick Uncle Jack Frost in his snow globes for the plummeting mercury he brings around each year. And by ‘popular research’, we mean a hypothetical statistical data collection that we have never actually conducted. For most of us, winter is the time to laze around, stay warm, stuff our bellies, pile on the heat inducing layer of fat and eventually stand in front of the mirror hating ourselves. But when you have to get on motorcycle or cycle and tackle Mother Nature’s cold fury yourself, winter seems a whole lot nastier. After you set yourself up for the bitter chills, it is also important to attend to your vehicle as well. It wouldn’t hurt to give it some extra care during the winter. Here are a few things that you could keep in mind:
cycling preparing yourself Your gut (or your wife/mum) might tell you to pile on the garments. But you need to fight your instincts here. The key here is to not overdress. Since it is cold outside, you tend to assume that you need a ton of clothes. WRONG! Eventually your body will produce plenty of heat and sweat when riding and you might be forced to strip off your extra clothes in the middle of the road. If the body is unable to replenish the heat that is being lost it can lead to hypothermia and with excessive sweating you might have to face dehydration. The trick is to leave home by wearing just enough clothes to be slightly cold and you can afford to warm up as you cycle along.
Avoid cotton in your base layers as it tends to absorb sweat and stick to your skin. A polyester base layer (with maybe a wool jersey) works best. A soft-shell jacket on top will be good enough to fight the cold. For your head from getting chilled, you can wear a wool cap under your helmet or can opt for a balaclava or scarf. And to avoid feeling like your fingers are going to fall off, wear proper winter riding gloves that also give you enough movement to safely operate shift and brake levers. TIPS: If you tend to sweat a lot, it would be a good idea to keep an extra dress in a backpack to change into once you reach your destination.
Later that day
preparing for the ride For winter, you might want a slightly more open tread pattern than you would for dry weather. Experiment with tyre pressures too. It’s worth running lower pressures to get more traction, even if you need to put in some extra effort to get home. Keep your drivetrain as clean as possible and use a good quality wet lube. Finer dry and wax-based lubes won’t last long when the conditions are freezing. It’s also worth installing some fresh inner cables before winter, with some light oil in the housing to help resist friction. Nature makes a mess of brake pads. So if your pads are old, remove and inspect them – replace them before they
84 AUTOLIFE
December 2012
wear through to the metal. Also, clean your rotors to remove any residue. Days are significantly shorter during winters and the dark night makes early appearances. Furthermore, if you plan to venture out in the earlier hours, a thick layer of fog will hamper your visibility as well as make you less visible to others. So a proper set of lights is of utter importance. Look for the brightest bike lights you can find, preferably those that glow over an angle. Also a bright taillight is essential to make sure others see you as well. www.autolife.com.np
motorcycling preparing yourself Unlike cycling, riding a motorcycle produces almost no body heat for the rider. But since you will be riding at much higher speeds on a motorcycle, the cold blasts of air will make it seem like as if God is hurling shovels of ice on your chest. And the long term repercussions of cold air constantly hitting your chest are more severe than you could imagine. So dressing to ride a motorcycle in winter comes down to this one point - Insulation. Rather than putting on a heavy jacket which makes riding uncomfortable, dress up in layers and make sure they overlap well. Or best, get yourself a proper leather riding jacket. But don’t put on too many clothes that you lose all mobility. It is a good idea to invest in some
proper winter riding gears. Also, make sure that your outer most layer of clothing is some sort of wind-proofing material. For your hands, invest in a good quality gloves that keeps you warm on the inside and prevents the cold wind from reaching your fingers. To keep you feet warm as well, invest in a good quality ankle length boots that prevents the severe cold from finding its way to the gap between your pants and footwear. TIPS: In situations where the cold wind still manages to find its way into your body, a few layers of newspaper under your jacket can also work as a fine makeshift protection against wind.
preparing for the ride First, ensure that your bike is in its top condition. Make sure that you give your bike a few free kicks (if you have a kick start system) without turning on the ignition, before firing up your bike every morning. Let it run at the idle RPM for a few minutes and let the motor warm up. Bad weather such as fog or low winter sun can not only restrict your view, but also makes you less aware of the hazards on the road. Even pedestrians become a real hazard, as they bow their heads and hunch up against the cold, leaving them prone to walk out in front of you without looking properly. So make sure that your motorcycle’s lighting system works well enough to enhance your personal vision. The rider should wear reflective clothing as well to make www.autolife.com.np
sure that other bigger road users can spot them, especially on foggy mornings and dark evenings. Also when changing lanes or making turns, make sure that you signal other road users much earlier of your intentions. In case of riding with pillions, always advise your partner to avoid having their hands tucked inside pockets, regardless of the freezing conditions. This can be very dangerous during an unexpected crash as the pillion rider will not have the reflex and time to take out their hands and will land head first to the ground. And this is especially an issue in Nepal, because pillions here rarely wear a helmet to protect their noggin. AUTOLIFE December 2012
