We Nepalese are quite a deprived lot, when it comes to most things related to wheels. Firstly, we pay one of the highest tax rates on automobile imports in the world. Thus most of us here basically drive away in vehicles that cost nearly thrice its real value elsewhere in the world. And the sad story doesn’t really end here.

What do we get in return? One of the worst managed road systems in the world!

As of now, sports oriented cars aren’t really the most sensible purchase for our roads. But again, for any automobile enthusiast, most decisions are made from the heart rather than with the brain. And us, being the hardcore enthusiasts type, Laxmi Intercontinental (the sole Hyundai dealer here in Nepal) easily took our heart away, when they launched their sports coupe Veloster here in Nepal. Yes, regardless of all the sense that this sports oriented product might not make for our roads. Frankly, we never expected a car like the Veloster to actually be launched in Nepal. But the fact that the Hyundai people here in Nepal still decided to take this bold step regardless of sales possibilities, has us truly applauding with respect.

We hope this step by Hyundai to mainly display their brand identity has other local automobile brands following suit too, with launches of their benchmark products. After all with new beginnings like these, we too get to test drive/ride some of the finest wheels in the world and bring forth to our loyal readers a local review of these high-end products.

Secondly, in spite of all the potential, there is hardly any prospect of exciting motorsports activities in Nepal. So activities like motorcycle stunts are still yet to find a promising future in Nepal. Thus in our bid to promote the mushrooming concept of freestyle riding, we have done our best to make this issue the ultimate guide to motorcycle stunting in Nepal. We hope our initiatives will reap its benefits, if not now, at least sometime in the near future.

Bajaj’s “License to Thrill” scheme H&H Bajaj, the authorized dealers of Bajaj Motorcycles in Nepal has launched a Facebook campaign called “License to Thrill” targeting Bajaj Pulsar owners. Under this scheme, those who buy a new Pulsar 200NS will be entitled to a free pass for two to enjoy any adventure sports like zip line, bungee, canyon swing and canyoning, and a single pass in case of paragliding.

According to the company, the customers can choose any of these sports on their preferred date. Mahindra unveils a new identity

Mahindra Group has unveiled a fresh new logo. It will now sport a new ‘energetic red’ logo which builds on the group’s heritage while infusing modernity and dynamism into the brand. A deeper shade of the signature Mahindra red which is the primary colour connected with the brand highlights the logo. As part of the new identity, a new hand-drawn contemporary and edgy word mark in red will replace the existing one which is in black colour. According to the company, the new logo is in sync with the group’s aspiration, which is to become one of the top 50 most admired global brands within a decade.

Pokhara to get a 115-km cycle track

The Kaski District Development Committee has decided to construct a 115-km cycle track in and around Pokhara city. The cycle track which is aimed at promoting local tourism in the rural areas of the district is targeted both towards the visiting domestic and international tourists. The cycle track will start from Bindhyabasini temple and pass through Sarangkot, Bhadaure Tamagi, Chapakot, Pumbibumdi, Bharat Pokhari, Nirmala Pokhari, Kritinachnechaur and Lekhnath municipality. According to the officials of the Kaski District Development Committee, the construction of the first phase of the cycle track would require an estimated Rs 50.34 million. Since 90 percent of the proposed cycle track falls under forest areas and villages, only 12 km of the total cycle track needs to be constructed. Apart from the government budget, the Kaski DDC is optimistic about securing financial support from Pokhara Sub-metropolitan Office and other VDCs touched by the track.

Honda launches the 2013 Activa, Honda unveiling the CB150R Aviator and Dio Good news

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has rolled out the newer version of its Activa, Aviator and Dio scooters for 2013. The three scooters get engine upgrades and new cosmetic changes.

This trio will now come fitted with Honda Eco Technology (HET), a new engine technology co-developed with the Honda’s R&D divisions in Japan, Thailand and India. The engine is still the same single-cylinder, air-cooled, four-stroke, 109cc that makes a maximum power output of 8bhp.

Fuel efficiency has been increased by over 11 percent which has been achieved by the use of an offset crankshaft, low-tension piston rings, improved bearing oil-seals and lightened engine internals. The Activa gets a new metallic purple colour while the Dio and Aviator get a new yellow and a new gold paint schemes. The 2013 Dio is priced at IC Rs 44,701 while the Activa and Aviator are priced at IC Rs 47,188 and IC Rs 53,531 respectively (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) are gearing up to launch the CB150R Streetfire bike within this month.

The Streetfire has a 150 cc liquid engine which produces 17.5 bhp of power and a peak torque of 12.5 Nm. The Streetfire shares its genes with the popular CBR150R.The front fork, rear monoshock and the chassis remains the same with the CBR150R with slight cosmetic alterations to create a new bike.

The new bike, developed in Indonesia has been created for the Asian Market. The Streetfire will provide stiff competition to Pulsar 200 NS and Yamaha R15. Prices are expected to be around the region of IC Rs. 1 lakh.

2013 Maruti Suzuki Omni Limited Edition launched Maruti has launched the special limited edition Omni in India.

The 30 year old most successful van in Indian automotive history gets new upgrades but the engine specifications still remains the same. It will be powered by the same proven 796 cc petrol engine which will offer 37 bhp of power and 62 Nm of torque. The limited edition Omni will come with a new left side rear view mirror, floor mats, CD player with Aux input and four speakers and seat covers. It will come in a five seater and eight seater layouts. It will be offered in a choice of six colours. Prices are yet to be announced for the limited edition Omni.

Tata Motors officially launches the Vista D90 Tata Motors have launched a new variant of the Vista named as the Vista Quadrajet D90. The new variant will be powered by an 88 bhp 1.3 –litre Quadrajet diesel motor which is also available in the Manza Saloon.

The Vista Quadrajet 90 will be available in two trims, VX and ZX. The VX comes with features like power windows, central locking, ABS with EBD and trip computer. While the ZX gets alloy wheels, dual airbags and all the features of the VX. The interior gets driver aligned console and a new multi information system, also found in the new Manza Club Class sedan. Both the variants get a black painted roof exterior.

Prices for the VX and DX version start from IC Rs 5.99 lakh and Rs 6.83 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) respectively.

Aston Martin Centenary Edition Vanquish launched Aston Martin has launched the limited Centenary Edition Vanquish in order to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The iconic British automaker started its birthday celebrations on January 15th with the launch of the bespoke new Centenary Edition Vanquish. It will be limited to just 100 examples worldwide including each from the DB9, V8 Vantage and the Rapide and Vanquish range. The Centenary Edition Vanquish boasts deep soft black leather, previously featured in the legendary and the most expensive car One-77, with contrasting silver stitching on the seats with Aston Martin logos on the headrests and sterling silver thread embroidery. The Aston Martin wing badges are fitted with tailored sterling silver sill plaques. Each model will also come with a gift box with 2 glass keys, 2 bespoke key pouches made from leather matching the car’s interior trim, solid silver cufflinks, solid silver Rollerball pen and high quality Bang & Olufsen headphones.

The Centenary Edition Vanquish is now available to order. However, the price is only obtainable on application at Aston Martin’s dealers.

2014 Aston Martin Rapide S Unveiled

Aston Martin has unveiled the 2014 Rapide Sedan. Aston describes this as its most powerful four door sedan ever. It will replace the old Rapide in the company’s line-up. The sedan gets the new AM11 naturally-aspirated 6.0-liter V-12 engine that delivers 558 bhp of power and 620 Nm of torque, 17 percent more than the earlier one. The Aston does 0-100 in just 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 306 kmph. The interior gets an optional duo-tone combination of perforated red-and-black leather while the exterior includes a new bonnet, new front bumper construction and new grille. Similarly, Aston Martin is also offering an optional Carbon Exterior Pack which includes front splitter, rear diffuser, mirror caps and rear lamp infill made of carbon fibre. Customers are offered a choice of three modes, Normal, Sport and Track. These three settings are determined by an electronic control unit which takes sensor readings from the car’s systems, including throttle position, brake position, steering wheel rotation and vehicle speed. Sales for the Aston Martin Rapide S will start from February and prices will be announced at a later date.

2013 Dakar Rally Concludes

Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret of Mini have won the car category of the 2013 Dakar Rally. The French-duo bagged the overall victory in 14 stages. Peterhansel successfully defended his driver’s title with eleven wins in total now. In the bikes category, Cyril Despres of KTM won this edition of the Dakar rally. Similarly, Marcos Patronelli of Yamaha won in the quad category. Likewise, in the truck category, the all-Russian team Kamaz with Eduard Nikolaev won the rally. The 2013 edition of the Dakar rally was organized in South America for the fifth time in succession.

It comprised of 14 stages and 8423km in total. Dakar being the most gruesome rally in the world claimed three lives in the span of 14 stages.

2013 Honda CRF250M launched Honda has launched the CRF250M, a supermoto version of its popular CRF250L in Thailand. The new supermoto gets the re-tuned version of the CBR250R’s 249 cc fuel injected engine which produces 20.3 bhp of power and 21.69 Nm of torque. The CRF250M is equipped with 17inch street tires instead of the 21-inch front and 18-inch rear knobby tires that come with the CRF250L. The supermoto retains the upside-down forks and Pro-Link rear suspension from the 250L. It also retains the steel twin-tube frame, exhaust, and LCD instrument panel from the 250L. The CRF250M will come in two colour schemes: black with red and all-black.

The CRF250M is only available in Thailand at the moment.

Honda unveils the MSX125 Honda has unveiled its all new mini-bike, the MSX 125.

The MSX 125 stands for Mini Street Xtreme 125.It has a 4-speed gearbox, projector headlight, LED tail-lamp, LCD digital dash, mono-backbone steel tube chassis, 31mm USD fork at the front, monoshock at the back and a 12inch cast-alloy wheels. The tiny Honda weighs just 102 kilos. The total fuel tank capacity is 5.5 litres and colour choices include black, white, red and yellow. According to Honda, it is a fun motorcycle for beginners. The bike which is manufactured in Thailand is also confirmed for the European and Japanese market.

BMW sells Husqvarna BMW has officially sold the Italian dirt bike brand Husqvarna to Pierer Industrie AG – the firm headed by Stefan Pierer who is currently boss of KTM. It turns out its KTM CEO Pierer is completely independent of KTM. BMW, the German giant bought Husqvarna from MV Agusta back in 2008 but the global financial crisis forced BMW to look for new buyers. BMW has completely renovated Husqvarna by revamping its entire facilities, product range and engine developments. Pierer is the current CEO of KTM but this purchase has been completed by his own Pierer Industrie AG firm and it is unknown at this stage if he will be allowed to stay on with KTM.

The highlights of the show are the Indian Stunt Group ‘Team StuntStars’ and also includes a special stunt performance by female Indian stunter Anam Hashim.

The Indian Stunters will be arriving here with their stunt customized motorcycles to thrill the Nepalese audience. Various other Nepali groups will also be performing alongside the Indian Stunters. The event will take place on February 23, 2013 at the Satdobato swimming pool, Kathmandu. Tickets are priced at Rs 200 per head. The event will be hosted by popular TV host Sanjay Gupta. The nearest thing to sports cars that you will see on our roads are the shoddily modified hatchbacks and sedans which are decorated with an array of tasteless aftermarket sports accessories. Sure you will see some of the finest and latest SUV’s running on our roads, but in the case of genuinely sports oriented cars, there are just a handful of past generation ones like the Mitsubishi GT3000, Ford Mustang, Mazda RX-7 and Toyota MR2. So, when Hyundai invited us to the press launch of their brand new Veloster sports coupe, we weren’t really going to stay content with just a sneak peak at the car. This was the first time ever that a sport oriented car had been officially unveiled in Nepal and we at AutoLife were definitely not going to let go an opportunity to test drive it.

EXTERIOR STYLING One look at the Veloster and its unique shape and low stance immediately means business. Up front, the car shares nearly the same family face that can be seen in most of the latest Hyundai’s. But the front grille of the Veloster is much bigger and bolder with the futuristically shaped headlights and fog lamps.

Hyundai’s fluidic design language can be seen in the Veloster as the face tightly moves towards the rear to complete an aggressive coupe look. The roof glass panels which begin from the base of the windshield and continue all the way till the rear bumper gives the Veloster a signature look. The bonnet character lines, deeply sculpted sides and the 18-inch alloy wheels with colour-coded inserts add to the overall effect. The rear is another area where the Veloster truly marks an impressive sporting character, especially with the twin barrelled centre exhaust that is tipped in chrome and stylishly built into the rear bumper.

But the Veloster is a car with a kind of split personality, because it’s a two-door coupe from one side and a four-door hatch from the other. Hyundai claims that the main aim behind this design is to offer the styling of a coupe with the functionality of a hatchback.

However in a place like Nepal, it does make some safety sense too; passengers will be

able to drop out of the car only from the safer pavement side on the left. Well, unless you are the kind who fancies stopping right in the middle of the road. Though this unusual three-door layout might get slightly confusing especially with people who aren’t really keen about cars and will split opinions, it’s certainly a bold and sporty looking car.

INTERIOR STYLING The cabin is well-lit, roomy and there’s plenty of legroom. But if you are a bit overgrown than most average Nepalese, like some of the

folks at our office, you’re unlikely to enjoy your time in the driver’s seat. Given the Veloster’s low stance and coupe inspired styling, there is very limited headroom inside. The rear especially is the place best left for children or simply those people that you really don’t like. But that aside, the interiors with glossy plastics on the dash and soft-touch materials on the doors, are nicely done. The fluidic dashboard layout though, shares quite a lot of similarity with the ones on most of the new-age Hyundai’s. It sure isn’t a boring layout, but could have been different at least

PERFORMANCE On the move ,its good looks is evident, as the Veloster easily turns heads wherever you go. The seating position is low, but cleverly designed so as not to hamper all round visibility.

As you push the starter button, the thin voice from the exhaust sadly fails to live up to the anticipated expectation of an overly sporty rumble.

But to be fair, a normal 1.6 litre engine capable of 130bhp of power and 157Nm of torque is not exactly what you would call powerful or sporty. So, I wasn’t at least expecting firecrackers the moment I hit the pedal. All along the heavy traffic from the showroom at Thapathali, the car effortlessly chugged

ahead. Driving in the chaotic traffic was further aided by the automatic DCT transmission, with the left foot resting in peace. The automatic is slick and was generally in the right gear at the correct time.

But there is some initial lag in finding the power band during sudden overtaking, as

the Veloster, like most automatics, tends to ride a gear higher for fuel efficiency reasons.

The steering is well weighted unlike most Hyundai’s and gives out an enthusiastic

vibe with the required feedbacks. There’s enough grip from the 18-inch tyres, but you will have to be careful while going over road bumps at high speeds. There is a very thin line between the radial tire and the massive rim. Ride comfort along our bumpy roads is the same as on most sedans and the Veloster drives high enough to avoid scraping its bottom at the usual potholes around the city.

Though suspension settings are on the firmer side, it’s surprisingly compliant over the rough uneven surfaces of our roads.

The Veloster was simple to drive and operate around the chaotic roads of Kathmandu.

But once on the highway to Bhaktapur, the Veloster portrays a completely different picture.

It seems that the Veloster is best enjoyed when being driven hard. Getting past the double digit speed barrier literally becomes a joke. Well it really doesn’t tear the roads www.autolife.com.np

apart, but the throttle response is easily unlike any other similar spec car that we have driven in Nepal. The most amazing aspect is that you hardly realize the speeds you have been doing, as the Veloster totally feels composed. Shift the automatic to the semi-auto SHIFTRONIC, and the car feels more enthusiastic with the driver now in command of the gears. It would have been an icing on the cake, if this variant of the Veloster had come equipped with the optional steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

VERDICT Overall, the Veloster turned out to be a surprisingly good package. It definitely isn’t the most powerful car around in the world, but a sports car is not always just about engine capacity, top speed or 0-100kmph times. A sports car is also about providing you the ultimate satisfaction of driving, irrespective of the figures. So for Nepal, the Veloster does set itself apart from the herd.

It certainly is a crowd puller and a hoot to drive.

The pricing is a bit steep, but exclusivity always comes at a price. And comparing the Veloster to other true blue sports car isn’t really justifiable, as those cars in Nepal will not only cost far more than the Veloster, but are also practically impossible to drive in our forsaken roads.

So coming to the ultimate question - Is the Veloster really a sports car? Yes it is sports car enough for Nepal!

Freestyle riding or motorcycle stunting is one of the most dangerous jobs around in the two-wheeled world. But it is still the most desired professions in the biking fraternity and undoubtedly one of the most respected ability in motorcycling culture. It is the skilful art of riding a motorcycle in such a way that differs from the normal style of everyday riding. It is the ability to ride motorcycles deploying various riding skills, accompanied by complex rider acrobatic positions and on most occasions, doing the same on one wheel.

The finesse to defy laws of gravity and enact various tricks on motorbikes is the rare nurtured talent that not every motorcyclist manages to develop and perfect.

No wonder, riders are willing to risk life and bones to perfect their stunting skills, often sacrificing most of their time. It’s the passion for riding and mastering the craft that keeps motivating and inspiring stunters to keep investing in the game.

Talking about motorcycling stunting in our country, it has still yet to come of age. In the west, freestyle riding is appreciated and encouraged to such a level, that a stunter can easily earn a good living by showcasing stunt shows for enthusiasts and taking part in stunt competitions with the help of sponsors. But here, stunting is not like other career options, where all the hard work, talent, commitment and effort will guarantee you five figure plus salaries. It’s actually hard to even consider stunting a sport here in Nepal. It has no official sanction, no true governing body and little recognition beyond the budding stunt performers.

Sadly, motorcycle stunting is also usually dismissed as an act of hooliganism in our society and could-be professional stunters are discouraged from an early start. Hence, the stunting career of most Nepalese bikers starts with a burn out, continues to a pop up wheelie and ends with a standing stoppie. Well, many may also argue that the major Indian bikes available to us here makes it impossible to imitate the various popular motorcycle stunts that bikers from western countries perform on their high powered superbikes. But now it’s high time we ignored the myth and looked down south to India where our desi friends are already performing almost every stunts, you name it; on the same low powered Indian bikes. www.autolife.com.np

Stunters need to stop nurturing the attitude of putting themselves way above their real abilities and rather develop the humility of focusing on continuously raising their capabilities.

So practice, patience, dedication, knowledge and promotion are the key to foreseeing a good future for motorcycle stunting in this little nation. Stunts are very difficult to execute, and equally dangerous. Stunt riders here need to develop the patience and long term commitment to perfect their stunts. Just practicing over the weekends will not help if one wants to take freestyle riding seriously and make an impact. Motorcycling stunting is also a very expensive indulgence unlike other forms of motorcycling. You are more prone to crashing frequently while stunting, and repairing your motorcycle as well as paying up your medical bills can be a very expensive proposition. It’s high time that bikers here realize that it isn’t just the adrenaline rush that guarantees the development of a true stunt biker. A biker has to be ready and willing to invest a lot towards time, money, personal fitness and dedication for the game to come out as a real survivor of this life on one wheel.

With thrill comes the high risks. Stunt riding comes with the prospect of numerous spills and broken bones, because a promising stunt rider will keep chasing the next stunt idea popping in one’s head and never be content enough. A stunter must invest in safety gears like a good helmet, leathers, gloves, knee, arm guards, etc and make full use of these protections while stunting. It might look good and heroic to have your happy handsome faces posing without helmets on the camera, but life isn’t indeed Bollywood every time.

An unexpected crash can always leave your image scarred for life, and posing for photographs will be an activity you will never love again. Also one has to make sure about the environment where one practices stunting. Always stunt in an empty neglected stretch of space where traffic flow is the least possible

and is not populated with people, for your safety and for the people around you. You really don’t want to be assumed to be a fool because while practicing stunts before mastering it, you will always look like an idiot. Along with personal protection, dedication to safe stunting will also help in ensuring further positive promotion of this overshadowed sport and possibly grant some slack by the government authorities.

No doubt that there has been growing interests of Nepalese bikers in motorcycle stunts lately. But the bitter truth is that we are still yet to see stunters who can creatively and confidently play with his motorcycle on one wheel and leave us truly drooling and wonderstruck. The major problem here is that, the stunters need to stop nurturing the attitude of putting themselves way above their real abilities and rather develop the humility of focusing on continuously raising their capabilities.

Only then, maybe we will have our own local Chris Pfeiffer and AC Farias. Anyways, with the rising dedication and the few companies like Yamaha willing to promote freestyle riding, the day shouldn’t be very far. So, with all this above in mind, go ahead and try pulling off one of those one wheeled trick. But please do it with safety precautions and under proper guidance!

FLO RIDERZ MOTORCYCLE CLUB Flo Riderz Motorcycle Club (F.R.M.C) was founded back in June 2008. WHEELIES A wheelie is a common motorcycle stunt. It is a trick, where the front wheel comes off the ground due to an excessive amount of torque being powered to the rear wheel. On powerful motorcycles, the front wheel can be lifted into the air just by only accelerating. But on smaller capacity bikes, the clutch must be used along with bouncing of the front suspension, and the recoil will help lift the front wheel on accelerating. But the principle to control the wheelie is the same, by using the throttle and rear-brakes. There are many variations of the wheelie trick, and here below is a brief info on most.

1. SIT DOWN WHEELIES: It’s a wheelie performed with the rider

seated on the saddle in the normal riding position.

NO FOOT WHEELIE: In this wheelie the rider is seated, but with both feet spread out to the sides.

SIDE SADDLE WHEELIE: The wheelie is done with the rider seated sideways on the saddle. It can also be done with the rider seated on the tank.

2. STAND UP WHEELIES: It’s a wheelie performed with the rider standing on the motorcycle. There are various variations to this wheelie.

REAR PEG WHEELIE: This wheelie is performed with the rider standing on the rear foot pegs.

SEAT STANDER WHEELIE: This wheelie is executed with the rider standing on the seat of the motorcycle.

FLAMINGO WHEELIE: Also known as the Ballerina Wheelie, this stunt is performed by standing on the seat of the bike and placing one leg in the air straight behind the bike.

CAN-CAN WHEELIE: It’s a stand up wheelie with the right leg in front of the left leg and stretched out to the left side, or vice versa.

Another variation of this is the Reverse Can-Can Wheelie with the rider standing up one of the pegs, with the wrong foot

and stretching out the other foot from the front to the opposite side.

NAC-NAC WHEELIE: It’s a stand up wheelie with the right leg behind the left leg and stretched out to the left side, or vice versa.

NOSE GRAB: It’s a stand up wheelie with left hand grabbing the bottom tip of the bike’s headlight. Another variation is the Fender Grab Wheelie in which the rider grabs the front wheel’s fender guard. And in the Tail Grab Wheelie, the rider holds onto the tail section with one hand.

wheelie within a circle. Often performed at a low rate of speed, this form of wheelie is the ultimate testament to a stunter’s control on a motorcycle. Another variation is the Ralph Loui Wheelie, which is a Circle Wheelie with the rider standing on the left peg and the left leg stretched out, or vice versa. DE-ACTIVATOR WHEELIE: This is another extreme version of the Stand Up Wheelie which involves riding a wheelie on idle and constantly jumping on the back of the motorcycle.

5. NO HAND WHEELIES: This is a wheelie performed without any hands on the throttle. A throttle lock is used to maintain the position and balance of the bike. A simpler variant of this wheelie is the No Throttle Hand Wheelie,

This wheelie is performed with the rider sitting on the gas tank and having his leg over the handlebars. A further progress on this wheelie leads to the High Chair Scrape in which the rider wheelies over balance point and proceeds to drag the tail. Then there is the Crossed Up Wheelie which is similar to a High Chair Wheelie, except for that the legs are crossed over each other.

It’s the highest form of wheelie with the bike facing straight upwards. This wheelie is beyond the balance point, and stunters commonly scrape the tail light or have a scrape bar to protect the tail light and fairings.

Stoppies, also known as nose wheelies and endos, is the lifting of the rear wheel of the motorcycle using the motorcycles momentum and front braking force. Here below is information on the various kinds of stoppies that are popularly performed by stunters across the world.

4. 180° STOPPIE: For this, the rider performs a stoppie and then proceeds to turn the bike 180 degrees while still on the front wheel.

For this, the rider performs a Highchair Rolling Stoppie with no hands on the handle bar and uses the ankle to work the front brake. It is also called Ankle Stoppie.

1. STANDING STOPPIE: This is the first step in mastering various other stoppies. It’s a stoppie in which the rider comes to a stop right at the point where he lifts the rear wheel on air.

It’s a stoppie in which the rider pops the rear wheel up in the air and continues to roll ahead on the front wheel for some distance. The Rolling Stoppie can be further incorporated with various other rider positions.

3. ONE HANDED STOPPIE: This trick is achieved when the rider performs a Stoppie with only the right or left hand on handle bar. A more advanced form is the No Hand Stoppie in which the rider performs a Rolling Stoppie and continues

eo t h e r OTHER STUNTS Apart from wheelies and stoppies, there are various other stunts too which can be performed with the bike planted on both wheels. Most of these stunts are much easier compared to wheelies and stoppies where the rider needs to get one wheel on the air.

4. HUMAN COMPASS: This involved the rider resting on the side of the motorcycle and going around a circle. Another similar stunt is the No Hand Circle which involves the rider seated and going around in a circle with the motorcycle on idle and no hands on the handlebar.

It’s called a Rolling Burnout when the rider moves ahead with the rear wheel still spinning against the surface. The Burnout stunt can be performed with the rider deploying various other riding positions like High Chair or Switchback, and going about in different styles. One of the trickiest Burnout is the Suicide Burnout, which has

2. DRIFTING: Drifting involves the rider sliding the rear of his motorcycle sideways in a controlled manner and moving ahead at a lean angle using throttle and some braking manipulations. It’s also called Power Sliding.

3. CHRIST: This is a stunt performed with the rider standing straight up on the seat or tank of the motorcycle with both arms extended

7. SKITCHING: For this, the rider hangs on to either the side or rear of the bike and drags his feet on the ground while in motion. It’s called Side Skitching or Rear Skitching, depending on the position of the rider. With two bikers Skitching side by side it’s also possible to perform the Arch, which involves their feet touching each other forming an arch. The Jedi Knight is the ultimate form of Skitching and this has the rider dragging his feet on one side and then kicking his feet up and over the bike to continue Skitching on the other side.

This stunt involves the rider standing on the foot pegs and jumping onto the gas tank while motorcycle is moving. There are two other variants to this type of stunt.

The Leap Of Faith is performed with the rider standing on the front seat and taking as high of a leap as possible and landing onto the gas tank, while the motorcycle is moving. The Leap Of Death is another version which involves the rider standing on the rear passenger seat and jumping on to the tank. Some experienced stunters also experiment with Ninja/Karate antics mid air.

9. SWITCHBACK EAGLE

It’s a stunt performed with the rider facing the rear of the motorcycle and proceeds

10. TANK INSANE:

For this, the rider balances a handstand on the fuel tank with the feet up in the air, while bike is moving. The Switchback Hand Stand is a reverse version of the

handstand on the tank or seat while going down the road.

11. CHRIS PFEIFFER FLIP: This stunt involves the rider successfully landing a front flip immediately after stopping the bike and simultaneously parking the bike on side stand. This move was made famous by stunt icon Chris Pfeiffer.

top gear: vietnam special The Top Gear ‘Great Adventures’ episodes are now part of the show’s folklore with its fans, and the Vietnam Special simply proves to show how much this series enjoys pitting man against machine. In this 84-minute movie, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May head to Southeast Asia to the spectacular country of Vietnam to travel 1,600 km from Ho Chí Minh City in the south to Ho Long city in the north.

Their challenge is to travel the entire length of the country in eight days, thereby demonstrating what the American military failed to achieve in ten years during the Vietnam War. There was one problem, though. In all those hours sitting in pubs planning the adventure, no one on the entire production team had thought to look into the practicalities of buying a car in that corner of the world. Though the presenters were initially ecstatic about the seemingly vast amount of money they were given by the producers this time, they soon discovered that it wasn’t really enough to buy a car. James May discovered that a standard Fiat 500 cost 560,000,000 Vietnamese Dong (£22,000), and their 15,000,000 Vietnamese Dong was not even equivalent to £1000. As a last resort, much to Clarkson’s initial dismay, all three of them decide to buy motorbikes. Hammond bought a Belarusian-built 125 cc two-stroke Minsk, May a four-stroke Honda Super Cub and the unenthusiastic Clarkson purchased a green Piaggio Vespa equipped with several rear-view mirrors. The greatest challenge is getting Clarkson onto twowheeled form of transport, with the very tall Brit having never attempted anything like this. The rest of the episode follows the trio’s journey to their destination in what is one of the most spectacular road trips the show has managed to produce. The traffic is insane, making even the busiest western roads looking positively timid. It’s the rainy season too, and it all comes bucketing down on them. And, being Vietnam, it’s damn hot too.

But the trio soldier takes it all on with good humour, mocking each other and pulling the usual pranks along the way. The final destination for this challenge is a floating dock in Ha Long Bay and to get to the Ba Hàng Bar, located in a cove somewhere in the waters, their motorcycles also had to be converted into watercrafts overnight.

Unlike normal episodes of Top Gear, in which the challenges were related to the abilities of the vehicles reviewed, the narrative of this film is a bit more skewed towards the three guys. In the film’s conclusion, Clarkson sums up this adventure and ends with, “It’s hard to sum it up really.

Perhaps that’s why people when they get back from this country always say the same thing; Vietnam, you don’t know, man! You weren’t there!”

top gear: bolivia special Top Gear: Bolivia Special is another special 76-minute episode of the motoring series Top Gear. It features the presenters James May, Jeremy Clarkson, and Richard Hammond travelling 1600km through South America from the rainforests of Bolivia to the Pacific coast of Chile. Each of the three presenters is allowed a £3500 budget which they use to buy second-hand off-road vehicles online via the Internet. Richard Hammond purchases a Toyota Land Cruiser, Jeremy Clarkson gets himself a Range Rover and James May buys a Suzuki Samurai.

Jeremy, Richard and James are dropped deep in the Bolivian rainforest.

The three presenters start at a riverside in the Amazon jungle where a towed river raft delivers their cars. Hammond is terrified of insects, James May is scared of heights and Clarkson of ‘manual labour’. The driver of the raft only parks it vaguely near the bank, at a point that they cannot disembark easily. Finally after some failed attempts, they set upon their true South American 4wd adventure. What follows is one of their most extraordinary journeys. For the first section of the journey, they are forced to make a route by slashing undergrowth and go along logging trails, encountering snakes and insects. For the next section, the cars undergo minor modifications to cross a river, including non-standard use of certain products. They then climb into the Andes to La Paz along the Yungas Road, a road also known as the ‘Death Road’ due to its narrowness and sheer drops. After crossing the road, their cars are modified in La Paz. Clarkson and Hammond fit much bigger wheels and tyres on their cars. Hammond also gets rid of the roof, and replaces it with a lighter roll bar. May simply ‘mends’ his car. Then A few miles from the end of their journey through mountain deserts, the route takes them down a very steep sand dune to reach the Pacific coast, on Caleta Los Verdes. They initially decide to practise on a less steep dune. But just prior to starting their practice run, Hammond gets out ‘forgetting’ that his handbrake was broken and that he had left the Toyota in neutral. The Toyota rolls down the dune driverless and rolls over, which means the end for the Toyota. But Clarkson and May complete the dangerous descent to the coastline.

Their attempt to drive from the heart of Bolivia to the coast of Chile takes them through rain forests, deserts, volcanoes and much more. On the way, they encounter local drug lords, the debilitating effects of high altitude and the terrifying sheer drops of The Death Road. In the end, Clarkson observes that due to the Toyota’s failure and the Suzuki’s hard ride, though the Range Rover was the most unreliable car in the world, it had proven itself to be the most reliable car in the world.

I

am not really a big fan of the X-Games. But back in 2006, I happened to somehow tune into the live telecast of the X-Games.

It was then that I had first heard about Travis Pastrana. While most freestyle motocross riders were using the same ramp settings to display their motorcycle jumps, Travis decided to tweak the ramp set-up and nobody really knew what was cooking in his mind. What followed next was how he left every live viewer awe-struck, with one of the most spectacular stunt that could have been pulled off on a motorcycle. I had just witnessed a record-setting performance of the first ever double back flip stunt on a motorcycle. Ever since then, Travis Pastrana has been instrumental in the explosion

of the popularity of the X Games and has had me hooked to one of the most popular extreme sports athletes in the world.

Travis Alan Pastrana a.k.a the modern day Evil Knievel, was born on October 8 of 1983 in Maryland, USA. Travis started motorsports at the age of 4 on a Honda Z-50 and by the age of fourteen, he was already the world champion of freestyle motocross. Although he had passion for mountain biking, he got entrenched in the world of motocross and become synonymous with the word motocross itself, winning many titles beginning 1992. In the following years, his career jump started and he was decorated with various amateur national championships. It was in 1999 that

he began to carve his name in the X-Games, by becoming the youngest ever athlete at the age of 15 to win the X Games gold in the 125 cc pro racing category. Over the years, this wonder boy went on to win several titles in motocross, freestyle motocross and supercross motorcycle events, combined with many X-Games gold medals. Then in 2006, the X-Games stood witness to the nearly impossible record-setting back flip feat by Travis. During the same event, he also earned three gold medals and was placed among the elite legends of the game.

Although Pastrana loves to race motorcycles, he has equal passion for race cars as well. In the 2003 version of the Race of Champions, Pastrana drove for the Vermont Sports Car

rally team. The year 2006 saw Pastrana excelling in the Car Rally scene, when he won his first X Games gold medal in the rally car competition by edging out rally legend Colin McRae. So in the same year, he was signed by Subaru Rally Team for the American Rally Championship. As soon as he entered the rally cross scene, the event began to get extra attention with the superstar’s involvement. During his first year itself, he claimed three overall victories and won the champions title in Rally America 2006. And the championship winning streak continued till 2009. In between, he also participated in some of the stages in the World Rally Championship for the Subaru Rally Team USA. In 2011, Pastrana made a full-time jump from motocross to NASCAR series at the Toyota All-Star Showdown and finished sixth. He was all set for racing at the IndyCar Series too, but a broken right ankle at the 2011 X-Games side-lined him for nine months. Now, 2013 will see Travis making a full time switch to stock cars for the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

Travis had to put up with various broken bones, concussions and injuries from his failed attempts. For instance, just at the young age of 14, a life-threatening crash which separated his spine from his pelvis.

So far, Travis Pastrana has enjoyed a varied and spectacular career, unlike most athletes who has gotten behind the wheel. He is a genuinely great motorsports personality, who is freakishly talented on two or four wheels and already has a great legacy to leave behind. Pastrana has created sporting history with some of the most incredible stunts ever performed. However, Honda provides services to their valued customers through 65 other service points spread throughout the country. All service centres are automated and offer a variety of facilities to the customers such as general servicing, washing, repairs, warranty services, etc. The service centres are equipped with hydraulic ramps, pneumatic wrenches and necessary diagnosis equipments. It is mandatory for all Honda dealers to have a service centre with all the necessary equipments & trained technicians.

Additionally, the main service centre boasts of a comfortable customer lounge with video entertainment facilities, free Wi-Fi, newspapers & magazines, etc. Services are provided to the customers on the basis of first come-first serve basis with a token numbering system. However, customers can also avail of immediate attention in the cases of emergency or minor repairs. Free Service Campaigns are regularly conducted nationwide and Rural Check-Up Camps ensure services to customers who live in rural and remote areas.

CUSTOMER FOCUS STC has been planning to introduce a toll-free number for the benefit of Honda customers, so that they can register their suggestions/complaints regarding any issue with the ownership experience. Honda Nepal aims to solve every registered issue within a period of 48hrs. This service is expected to start by mid-February 2013 and should further increase Honda customers’ satisfaction and loyalty. Along with this service, STC also plans to introduce a revolutionary 24-hours emergency spot service facility to their customers within Kathmandu. This will enable Honda customers in Kathmandu to keep riding with a relief that Honda service is just a phone call away. STC hopes to replicate this service in all major towns across Nepal in the near future.

Instructors at the centre ensure the proper mechanical training of technicians from all dealers and authorized service centres throughout the country. Employed technicians are also regularly trained and updated with the latest technology and products, as new products are brought into the country.

SYAKAR SAFETY RIDING TRAINING CENTER (SSRTC) One of the main principles of Honda is

their focus on the safety of motorcycle riders and this can only be achieved with a proper knowledge of riding and training amongst motorcycle users. So in order to provide the proper knowledge regarding riding safely and following traffic rules, STC has established Nepal’s first international standard riding training centre at Gwarko, spread across an area of 10,200 square meter. t’s been five years since I started cycling in Kathmandu. But frankly, at that point, I did not start just because I supported the ‘Go Green’ movement. You see, I am basically a very lazy person. But I highly believe in staying physically fit. No offence to fat people, but I am really scared of developing a pot belly. So rather than committing myself to strenuous workouts at the gym or cutting down on my food intake, I chose to cycle.

Over the years, along with the health benefits, cycling provided me with several opportunities to explore new places around Kathmandu valley. This newfound high of discovering and exploring new places through cycling rides is the core reason that I am committed to this form of sport. In fact when I had started to jog earlier, the monotonous routine of running through the same route everyday had made me abandon the idea in less than three months.

So let me introduce you to one of my best cycling routes within the Kathmandu Valley. There sure are many places to go cycling around the Kathmandu Valley.

But this time, I’ll stick to the north of the Kathmandu valley from Budhanilkantha.

Start cycling from your place to the Budhanilkantha School. In the case of difficulties in finding the place, any local should easily guide you to the location of this popular school. On the way, you might as well pay a visit to the Budhanilkantha Temple. Cycle past the school and start pedalling on the approaching uphill climb. Since it’s a black topped road, the uphill road should not pose any difficulty for a regular cyclist. After doing about 600m of uphill riding, you will notice a gravelled motorable road that forks out to the left. There is yellow board in the diversion with Shivapuri Nagarjun Rastriya Nikunja Seema Prarambha written over it in Nepali. (If interested, one can rather continue about 5km further uphill towards Danda Gaun. The uphill ride takes you through dense pine forest well maintained green lawns of Nepal Army’s Staff College.) The downhill gravel road on the left continues through the forest and has a very few human settlements in between. The wide road takes you towards the Tokha Saraswati Temple. It is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to the divine goddess of knowledge and is thronged by many, especially during Saturdays. From the temple, the road stretches further south ward and reaches the village of Tokha. Tokha is a bustling and historical ancient Newari village which is slowly being influenced by the urbanization of Kathmandu. If you are pretty much done and exhausted for the day, you can continue southwards following the city skyline and end up at the Ring Road in Gongabu. Then head back home.

Now the rest of this route briefing is for the energetic lot who would like to venture further. From Tokha, continue northwest where the road steeply descends. The road is relatively big and should be pretty much black topped by now. This stretch of road goes up to a place called Gurje Bhanjyang. Take this road and go up till Jhor Mahankal and leave the black topped road from there.

Confirm with the locals for directions and traverse the gravel road going through Sangla and Phutung. At the right time of the year, you will find yourself cycling through lush green wheat fields. There are some small villages along the way. Once you reach Phutung, its back to the black topped roads from here. Continue south on this road and within half an hour you should find yourself in the chaos of Balaju. Head back home from here.

Ensure that you are well geared to cycle as per the weather of the day. During the entire ride, drink plenty of water to compensate for the loss of the moisture content from your body through perspiration. Losing body water can result in severe cases of dehydration. So stop by regularly for short water, tea/coffee or food breaks. Any form of alcohol is best avoided, unless you wish to take an unexpected plunge down the cliffs. Lastly, if you are not confident of the route, always make sure that you are on the right track with guidance from the local people.

TyRE TROUBLE If you ride a bicycle, sooner or later you will need to fix a flat or change (replace) a tire. Before beginning this process, turn your bike upside down, distributing its weight on the seat and handlebars. Now get ready to get your hands dirty.

Tools Required: • Pumps • Tyre Levers • Spare Tubes

The first step is to take the wheel with the flat off your bike. Do this by loosening the nuts or quick release mechanism that holds the wheel until it slides out. You may need to loosen your brakes to get the wheel off.

These often have a quick release mechanism too. If you are removing a rear wheel, it will also have to be lifted clear of the chain.

Using tire levers, remove the tire by wedging the tire tool between the tire and rim, and then prying upward to lift the tire away from the rim. Keeping the first tool in place under the tire, repeat this step about four inches away with the second tool to pull more of the tire over and off the rim. Repeat this step as you work your way around the rim. The one edge of the tire you’ve been working on should start to come free of the rim quite easily.

Next, you’ll need to remove the valve stem from the rim. Coming from the centre of the wheel by the spokes, locate the valve stem and push it up and through the hole in the rim so that it no longer protrudes through the rim. Remove the tire and tube the rest of the way. After you remove the old tube, check the inside of the tire thoroughly to make sure whatever caused the flat - glass, a piece of metal, etc. - is not still lodged in the tire to play a nasty trick on you and pop a second tube.

Take the new tube and with it still flat, work it into the tire, laying it where it goes when it is inflated on the rim. Make sure that the tube is not crimped or twisted at any point and the valve stem points to the centre.

Some people find that the tube is easier to work with if you put just a little bit of air in it, enough to hold it in the tire.

Put the tire and new tube back on the rim by first lining up the valve stem with the hole that it will need to go through on the rim. You must do this by working the first edge of the tire back onto the rim, easing the tube onto the rim at the same time using your fingers to carefully guide the valve stem back into its hole.

Finish putting the first edge of the tire completely on the rim. When you reinsert the valve stem of the new tube into the rim, be sure that it comes straight out of the hole and not be angled in any direction.

Use your hands to work as much of the second edge of the tire onto the rim as you can. It will become more difficult as you go, and finally you will need to use the tire levers to put the last part of the tire onto the rim. Using the pump, inflate the tire to the pressure recommended on the sidewall.

Put the wheel back on your bicycle, reattaching the nuts or quick release mechanism and resetting the brakes and replacing the chain as necessary. Check to make sure that the wheel is aligned properly, that it is held securely and that it spins cleanly.
