Adrenalin Overdose Everybody loves a good rush of adrenaline. But to personally feel that adrenaline rush, it’s very important to unleash your hooligan side. You really can’t expect to get your adrenaline pumping browsing through facebook lamely seated at your workplace. And last month, we at AutoLife not only felt that jolt of adrenaline but pretty much had an overdose of it. We first met our hooligan side up close while out on one of the best test reviews we have done so far. First we had a go on the pocket rocket KTM 200 Duke, which literally begged us to ride it hard and had us zooming through town with a huge grin. Then we met the indestructible Hummer H3 and drove it around feeling like some deadly US Marine on a holiday in the Himalayas. A sub-machine gun on the roof was sorely missed though! With both of these vehicles constantly provoking us to do something evil and bad, we then had the new Tata Vista for our final review. Our intentions were indeed pacified pampered in the comfort of its sedan like feel but gladly our spirits were not one bit dampened by its peppy performance. All reviews are an exclusive review feature and the first ever for Nepal. As if all this wasn’t enough, a group of adventure enthusiasts from the country got along last month and took the risk of organizing Nepal’s first ever Himalayan Outdoor Festival. Of course we were invited! We were there to cover their efforts with the insane cycling competitions like the uphill race, dirt track race and downhill run. The competitions were a true demonstration of pedal power with most of the cyclists insanely sliding around the bushes and flying around the track. Still on a hangover mode from the overdose, we actually felt a lot sober in front of these crazy adrenaline pumped cyclists. To keep up with the “ADRENALIN OVERDOSE” theme for our issue, we decided to do the same for our Ownership Reviews too. So we met up with the guys who rumble in the streets on their insane Ducati Monsters, to share their unparalleled Ducati experience so far. Then in the process we caught with the adventure hungry Clidanor Cano who stopped here in Nepal enroute his solo trip to the end of the world astride his motorcycle on steroids, the Ducati Multistrada 1200S Pikes Peak Edition. Rounding off this exciting issue, we have on feature some more not to missed feature stories. Like this crazy ride experience of one of our readers on his Extreme Ride to Sermathang, the unknown automotive side of one of Nepal’s most reputed banker, Mr.Anil Keshari Shah, our columnist Prasanna KC’s humorous take on the effects of drinking and driving, an introduction to the Toyota Prius in Nepal, the brand evolution of Chevy cars and the fast life history of one of the greatest motorcycle racers of all time, Mike Hailwood. Go ahead, enjoy the issue and don’t forget to share with us when you too get to feel that overdose of adrenalin. Of course don’t end up risking your own or the lives of others in the process. Stay safe!

Suzuki has successfully launched A-Star, Wagon R, Alto K10 and Ritz in the recent past and adds to its stable of wonders with The New Swift. More Swift. With the tagline of More Swift, the New Suzuki Swift is built on an all-new platform that outperforms the older model in all respect. The immensely successful Swift was initially launched in 2005. More than six lakh cars were sold in India alone and the numbers came to 200 million units worldwide, including Japan and Europe. This inspired the company and its suppliers to invest a further 500 crore to devise a model more successful than the last – one which added to the popular features of the original Swift and took it to the next level of safety, satisfaction and design. It went on sale in the UK in September, 2010 promising better dynamics, increased performance and improved CO2 emissions and economy. "We have launched the New Swift at a time when there was a significant demand for the outgoing model. I am confident that the New Swift will create new benchmarks with its improved fuel efficiency, stylish and sportier looks and high performance," said CEO Shinzo Nakanishi to reporters at the launch in New Delhi.

Exterior The new Swift’s exterior design reflects an evolution toward an aggressive and dignified look. A ground-hugging form gives a sense of stability and tension. A big front grille evokes high performance and is flanked by big, distinctive finned fog-lamp bezels for a more aggressive, dignified character. Aero parts that are exclusive to the new Swift control airflow, suppress lift, and help to give the car a low visual centre of gravity. Newly developed high-intensity discharge headlamps with a metallic coating and newly developed rear combination lamps with a cylindrical

design heighten the dynamism expressed by the exterior design.

Interior Sporty and exclusive design features in the new Swift’s cabin heighten driving pleasure, and a high-quality interior look and feel generates the pleasure of ownership. A five-dial meter cluster combines easy legibility with an uncluttered look. Soft leather on the steering wheel allows a natural-feeling grip for easy operation and a sense of refinement. And the front seats not only offer greater support but also have exclusive fabrics and stitching that heighten excitement about the driving experience.

Safety The new Swift represents an evolution in terms of safety. Comprehensive safety technologies offer superior control and peace of mind. For passive safety, the body is based on Suzuki’s Total Effective Control Technology, which ensures that it efficiently absorbs and disperses impact forces. Extensive use of high-tensile steel and the benefits of computerized structural analysis keep the body light while promoting safety. The most notable advance in terms of passive safety in the new Swift is that all grades have seven airbags (front, side, curtain, and knee airbags) as standard equipment. Suzuki also took a multifaceted approach to achieving higher levels of active safety. As a result, an ESP and an antilock braking system with electronic braking-force distribution are standard equipment and help maintain greater stability and controllability on diverse road surfaces.

From the perspective of performance, the upgrades are considerable. The overall weight has been reduced by 30 kg on the petrol variant and 15 kg on the diesel variant. The result is a much improved fuel efficiency, 18.6 kmpl for petrol and 22.9 kmpl for diesel. The length is increased by 90 mm and the wheelbase is longer. In terms of dimension, the new Suzuki Swift is longer by 155mm and allows more leg space for the rear seat people. Even the width and height have been increased marginally and the suspension improved to optimize the larger platform. An improved audio system, more connectivity options and better steering control further enhances the new Swift Package. Adorned with all these stellar features, The New Swift is undoubtedly the smartest, safest and most desirable automobile on the road at this moment!

Drinking and driving There are stupider things, but it’s a very short list

seems the people in Kathmandu have finally understood that while it takes 8,460 bolts to assemble an automobile, it takes all but one nut to scatter it all over the road. How very heartening it is to see then that the police are stepping up their fight against the drunkards. It’s also good to note that, at last, they are to prevent the crazy bikers from crisscrossing on a lane that barely fits a tempo. Other recent announcements from the police couldn’t have come a moment too soon. People will no longer be allowed to treat themselves to a drink. Not even a single peg. Or a can of Red Bull for that matter.

during the last 10 years, only 5,556 people were ‘asked to breathe into their faces’ and fewer than 11 per cent were found to be positive. In other words, the government has won its battle. But the nicelooking traffic policeman with the cheap-looking ‘special’ glares ‘donated’ by a certain embassy who seems to be all over the media proclaims that there is still one drink-related accident every day and something needs to be done. Well, to be fair to the drivers, most of the ‘accidents’ around Thamel and Jhamsikhel were also because of the wobbly pedestrians who fell in front

of the sober drivers assuming all cars on the roads to be taxis for hire. Of course, if you’re a pedestrian and you’re reading this, go ahead and blame the bad light. I know this sounds a bit disrespectful but I think it is the old people who are the worst offenders. And the reason they get away with it is because, at night, the police tend to stop youngsters in Bajaj Pulsars than rosy-cheeked 50 year olds in their SUVs. Science tells us a 16-yearold with a bottle of chilled Tuborg in his system still has faster reactions than a sober

No one would ever dare drive again. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for a drink.

The beer is no doubt the greatest invention in the history of mankind. Sure, the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with sukuti.

Now this is a problem if you love your drink and agree that there’s nothing better than a glass of chilled beer on a warm afternoon. For the beer is no doubt the greatest invention in the history of mankind. Sure, the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with sukuti. According to ‘unconfirmed reports’, 4,341 people were breathalysed between 8pm and midnight out of which 40.1 per cent of them were unfit to drive. Something needed to be done, and something was. In contrast,

60 year old, so why not ban old people from driving? Or people with a cold who’re tripping on De-cold, or those who need to drive home really fast because they have an urgent need to pee. I don’t know about you, but I sure as hell can’t concentrate when I’m bursting for a pee and there are no clean public bathrooms anywhere. Besides, what is the legal drinking limit? Nil. And when does someone have no alcohol in the blood? Twenty four hours after a glass of beer? Seven days?

NAKED.

It is a very powerful word that immediately fires up all your six senses. But as you might have begun to expect, I am not here to further talk about naked human beings. This term coincidentally also applies to a certain breed of motorcycles and not just us mere human beings. Motorcycles can be either fully faired, semi faired or purely naked. And naked is how I also prefer my motorcycles to be. Ever since it was revealed internationally, I had been raring to have a go on this naked Streetfighter, the KTM 200 Duke. Finally‌

On the road, it also turns quite a lot of heads with people wondering about this new orange in town.

THE NAKED STYLING Parked in the corner, it sits provocatively like a swimsuit model draped to the bare minimum in KTM’s trademark orange. The whole design perspective has been given a very unconventional and funky approach and the bike seamlessly flaunts its boldness with the sharp creases all around the body. The stickers, especially over the tank, gives the bike an imposing character with the graffiti like styling. The design is further reinforced by the visible muscular steel trellis frame below the tank shrouds. The chassis though looks a bit hidden in its black colour. Up front, there’s a solid looking 43mm upside down fork which gives the motorcycle a menacing look and the rear duties are handled by an attractive white coloured rear monoshock which is mated

to a stylish aluminium rear swingarm. The split-spoke design alloy wheels and the beefy low-profile radial rubbers further enhance its mean look. Both the front and rear mudguard are sporty and a sharp under engine cowl with diffuser like fins has been cleverly integrated in the whole design package. There is no exhaust canister on either side of the Duke and that might be shocking for most traditionalists as KTM has broken the convention here and placed a stubby exhaust box under the belly of the motorcycle. The wheelbase extends beyond the tail end of the bike, staying true to its street-fighter look. Other stylish bits on the Duke include the low slung bug-eyed headlight, wide tapered handlebars, backlit switchgears, fancy as well as functional rear view mirrors, LED tail lamp, split alloy grab bars, and the sleek clear-lens turn indicators. Overall, the quality of fit and finish of the parts on the motorcycle is exceptional and truly international. On the road, it also turns quite a lot of heads with people wondering about this new orange in town. Lastly, if you still insist that

its styling is still not perfect, KTM also offers a host of in-house developed KTM Power Parts accessories to make it look more aggressive and naughty.

THE SMART CONSOLE The state of the art speedometer in the Duke is something that definitely deserves a standing ovation. The digital instrument cluster might appear to be small in size but looks can be deceiving. It is a powerhouse of information display which tells you almost every bit about the motorcycle’s functioning. Of course it does take a while to get used to reading the tiny dot matrix fonts with sunlight

overhead. There is a small cascading digital rev counter on the top and the speed is prominently displayed below. Other functions on display are the gear indicator, engine malfunction warning, distance remaining to service, distance remaining to empty fuel, average speed during trip, average fuel consumption, engine temperature, indicator signals,

fuel gauge, two trip meters and speed display options both in kmph and mph. You also get the option to set the bike to notify a gear shift and redline at the desired RPM level. And it even makes sure you reach work or meet your date right on time with the digital clock on display. As if all this wasn’t already enough, it also displays a relevant text should there

be any problem in your motorcycle. Another interesting bit is when you switch on the ignition and the bright orange backlit console comes to life with the KTM slogan ‘Ready to Race’ flashing, while engine check runs in the background.

THE CRAZY PERFORMANCE The moment you slot the key in and switch on the ignition, a ‘Ready to Race’ message lights up on the console screen inciting you to immediately have a 32

go. Fire it up and the exhaust emits a throaty gruff and settles into a deep raspy grunt in idle. Just playing with the throttle and hearing the different two-stroke type exhaust sound, I already had my respect bestowed upon the Duke. Well some casual watchers might dislike the Duke’s unique exhaust tune. But one has to really ride it to realize how it supplements the Duke’s rowdy character. Pull in the light clutch lever, slot www.autolife.com.np

into first, rev it up a bit, release the clutch and you are off to a flying start. With a less than enthusiastic revving, the acceleration though is a little underwhelming as there is certain feel of lag or jerk in response when you start opening the throttle. But keep the revs up and you personally get in touch with the hooligan. On almost every gear the RPM indicator sweeps to redline in the blink of an eye and demands immediate gear shifts. It’s surprising to find yourself already in the top gear just inside the city and the short ratio gearbox also enables you to comfortably trundle along in moderate speeds even at the fifth or sixth gear. The KTM amazingly has almost no vibration to speak off even when nearing redline. Maybe due to the scorching summer heat and our tight city traffic, the engine did heat up too early at times with the cooling fan spinning rapidly to keep things under control. Now if you desire to ride the rev hungry Duke calmly, it will definitely behave accordingly. The only problem here is that, it keeps provoking you with naughty things to ride harder and things change when you decide to rip it apart. In no time, it turns into The Hulk from the reserved Dr. Bruce Banner

www.autolife.com.np

and furiously leaps ahead demanding machine gun firing like gear changes. It definitely does not turn into some huge green thing but sure is a little orange rev monster. Achieving triple digit figures on the speedometer down the highway literally becomes a joke. The 200cc motor which produces 25 bhp of maximum power @ 10000 rpm and 19.2 nm of torque @ 8000 rpm has definitely been juiced out to the ultimate drop. The weightless handling is another thing that really shines on the Duke. Shoot me if I am wrong, but no bike

around this segment is so easy to handle in traffic as the Duke. The empowering upright seating stance with the perfectly positioned foot pegs and wide handlebars will not only make everyday city commutes easy but also gives you that sporty feel as well when you want to exploit its performance. The flat and wide saddle though might just feel hard while covering long distances. Charging through the corners, the Duke is agile, stable and maintains a good grip. The way the motorcycle turns and leans over is indeed confidence inspiring. On good roads, the stiff suspension feels great with its utter poise and agility. But when bad roads appear, you need to either back off or rise over the pegs and switch over to dirt biking mode. For our kind of roads, KTM definitely needs to compromise on the stiffness and make the suspension a little softer. Due to the stiff suspension one will also need to adjust to the brake’s feel, and once you do, braking performance is great. The dual disk brakes, each at the front and rear is sharp and offers smooth and precise stopping power. During our thorough test around the city, the Duke also returned a satisfying 35kmpl fuel economy and that should definitely translate to around 45kmpl in the highway.

VERDICT The Duke is definitely a pocket rocket in its own right. Its quick performance and naked styling completely assaults your senses like nothing else before. And there’s also the KTM brand value to boot. I understand there are higher-end and more expensive bikes which rather aptly suit my description in these pages. But these motorcycles are a far cry for the average motorcycle buying crowd and in this case the KTM 200 Duke is a game changer. Look below the 250cc segment in Nepal and it’s hard to find such a performer and looker at such an affordable rate. The KTM easily makes other motorcycles feel overpriced and gives them an inferiority complex. The KTM 200 Duke is a charmer which not only conquers your heart but makes a lot of sense to your head too.

The Duke is definitely a pocket rocket in its own right.

OWNERS REVIEW With the beautifully sculptured body and vibrant color, the KTM 200 Duke is really a great sight on the road. I think this is the most agile and powerful bike in 150-250cc category. It is packed with sheer power and its power-to-weight ratio enables the rider to zoom past any other traffic on the street. It is easy to maneuver around, thanks to the wide handle bar and the awesome suspensions. The quality brakes can stop the vehicle anywhere you want. It is the first beast of its kind in this category to ever have entered the Nepalese streets. The vibration free engine and extreme acceleration encourages me to punch three digit figures on the speedometer every instance I take it out for a ride. I don’t see a lot of cons on the machine. However, it would not be a good idea to ride it through rain and mud as it accumulates slush on almost every part. The seats are hard and it’s a bit difficult for the pillion because of the smaller seat at the rear. I also hope the engine heating problem gets lesser after the first service. Overall, this motorcycle is by far the best I have ridden in years. >> Dibya Dev Bhattarai Previous Ride: Honda CBR 250R

I am passionate about two wheelers and KTM is one of my favorite brands. So a short test ride at the showroom was more than enough to convince me to get one. The trademark KTM orange color of the Duke is another factor that lured me to buy it. So far I am amazed by its awesome features and it is simply amazing. Regarding the looks, it is definitely one of the best designed bikes available in the country. It’s entirely naked styling makes it very different from other bikes and there is no limitation to its seamless performance and comfort while riding. It is powerful and the wide bars make handling easier. The suspensions are a bit on the harder side but I believe that extends the durability of suspension. Even the braking characteristics are very satisfying. The light weight of the Duke assures a perfect combination of power and mileage. I personally wish the bike had a much larger stance for my body preference, but I have already compromised on that part. I am simply in love with my KTM 200 Duke. >> Naren Lama Previous Ride: Royal Enfield Electra 350

The naked KTM 200 Duke has an attractive look mainly due to its well defined orange and black color combo. It is a stylish bike and you can see that from the headlights, tank, mirrors, sharp indicators, to the chassis. This bike is a European design and some of its features like the short exhaust might be complicated for some people to grasp. The speedometer offers a lot of information regarding the bike’s functioning. The performance of the 200cc motor category is very nice as you don’t have to rev too much to get moving fast. In the city it’s also very easy to handle because of its light weight. One really needs to be careful in keeping the power of the bike under control. But the engine get’s heated soon in the slow moving traffic of Kathmandu. For cornering, the bike is very sharp in making accurate judgements and the braking is awesome as well, especially in the front. I personally didn’t like the harder seats and the bike is not as comfortable as I expected it would be. The front suspension as compared to the rear suspension could have been better for our roads. However, the best thing here is the power of the KTM brand, and the international quality you get. >> Ujjwal Shrestha Previous Ride: Kawasaki Ninja 250R www.autolife.com.np

Trip to the end of the world

Words: ankit shakya / photos: Clidanor CANO America. Clidanor aims to reach the end of the world before the world ends on December 21, 2012, right before the ship hits the fan.

T

he 2012 doomsday prophecy could be completely bogus. The Mayans could have it all wrong. Maybe they got tired of working on their calendars and had actually stopped. So maybe the world won’t end on December 21, 2012 and we will laugh at how strung up we were about the ‘apocalypse’. HAHAHA! But what if...? We all have plans and dreams that we set aside to fulfil some other day, for tomorrow. So what if tomorrow never comes? Clidanor Cano is not taking any risks. The Argentinean, who has been living in Poland, does not want to miss out on life. He is an adrenaline addicted traveller who has also participated in various race competitions. And what better way to experience life to the fullest than to travel the world on a motorcycle. With that entire hullabaloo about the world coming to an end, Clidanor decided to stop procrastinating about his dream and get at it. So, at the spur of the moment, he straddled his 2011 Ducati Multistrada 1200S Pikes Peak Edition and is travelling the globe to his version of the “end of the world”. The end of the world Cano refers to is a train station in Ushuaia, Argentina located at the southernmost tip of South

We were lucky to have caught up with him on his brief stop in Nepal. Turns out he had embarked on his journey on the 1st of April, 2012 from Warsaw, Poland. His planned route is Poland -Slovakia-Hungary-Romania -Bulgaria-Turkey-Iran-United Arab Emirates-Pakistan-India-Nepal -ThailandCambodia-Laos-Vietnam -China-South Korea-Japan-Canada - U.S.A-MexicoGuatemala-Honduras -Nicaragua-Costa Rica-Panama-Colombia-Ecuador-PeruChile -Argentina. But on his way to Turkey, he encountered a little problem with his clutch. So unfortunately he had to make a detour to Italy to get it fixed. However, a pleasant turn of events took place as he got to meet Ducati’s MotoGP rider

Nicky Hayden, who was kind enough to sign on the tank of Cano’s Multistrada. Furthermore, Hayden told Valentino Rossi about Clidanor’s journey and amazingly the other side of the tank got Rossi’s signature on it. The mechanical glitch turned out to be a blessing in disguise eventually. He then got back on the saddle and continued his journey. Clidanor reached Nepal on the 13th of June 2012, from India with more than 16000kms clocked on his odometer from the beginning of his journey. He plans to stay a few days in Nepal before making his way to Thailand and continuing his journey to the End of The World. And best he makes good time, because if we are to believe the stories, this would be one deadline he would not like to miss. God Speed! Follow his adventure at: www.tripendoftheworld.com

bike. And Mike initially not knowing how to stop it, actually kept riding it until it ran out of fuel.

Every time he won prize money, he would use it to buy a better bike. Then in 1957 he travelled to South Africa to further work on his racing skills, where he borrowed a 250cc NSU from John Surtees and later bought it. any a stories about inspirational legends usually seem to start out with a mediocre beginning. However, Mike Hailwood was a completely different story. His father Stan Hailwood too had raced in the pre-World War II era and was a successful motorcycle dealer. So their family was pretty well off from the start. Well off enough for junior Mike to be given a handmade minibike, way before the Japanese industry invented the mini 38

July 2012

At fourteen, he got a James trial bike, which he used to ride around on grass tracks when he was home from college. His father once surreptitiously timed him and found he was going faster than a grass track racer whom he sponsored. With all the practice he got at such an early age to hone his skills, it was no wonder that he was already on his way to establish himself as one of the best motorcycle road racer of all time. Mike entered his first event at the age of seventeen in the Scottish Six Days Trial. A week later, he entered his first race on a borrowed 125cc MV Agusta and placed 11th. A few months later, he got his international racing license. He wasn’t coming 11th anymore. Every time he won prize money, he would use it to buy a better bike. Then in 1957 he travelled to South Africa to further work on his racing skills, where

he borrowed a 250cc NSU from John Surtees and later bought it. Returning home as the South African Champion in early 1958, he started racing a 125cc Ducati, John Surtees’s NSU, and 350cc and 500cc Norton’s. He won the British 125, 250 and 350 championships and came second in the world 250 cc championships. In only his second year of racing, he won 74 races. In 1959, he won the British 125cc championship on a Ducati, the 250cc championship on a Mondial, and the 350cc and 500cc championships on Norton’s. He won the Northern Ireland 125cc Grand Prix on a Ducati, and he finished 3rd in the 125cc World Championship. It was only in 1961 that the legend of Mike Hailwood actually started. Mike went to the Isle of Man with a borrowed 125cc bike from the then new upstart motorcycle company Honda. On the first two laps, Mike broke the lap record twice and won by seven seconds.

He borrowed another Honda, and rode the 250cc race later that afternoon. The 125cc race was three laps of the mountain; the 250cc race was five laps. Mike raced 486km on two different bikes back to back. In the 500cc race, despite having a bike which was 15km/h slower than Gary Hocking’s MV Agusta, Mike won. In the process, Mike became the first person to average 100mph around the Isle on a British bike, and the first person to win three Isle of Man TTs in one week. He won the 250cc races at the Dutch, East German and Swedish TT. Count Agusta impressed with his performance then lent him his 350 and 500 MVs for the last two races. Jumping straight from a Norton single to an MV four, Mike came first and second in the races and finished second in the world championship. His winning habit continued in 1962, 1963 and 1964.There were 27 500cc races held. Mike Hailwood won 22 of them. On the ones he didn’t win, he either didn’t turn up for or his bike broke. In 1965, Mike took the 500cc championship for MV Agusta again. However, the awesomely talented Giacomo Agostini had joined MV. Since Count Agusta liked the idea of an Italian rider winning on an Italian bike, he began giving Mike inferior equipment. As expected, this struck the wrong chord with Mike and he left and went to Honda. During his first season with Honda, he took the 250cc and 350cc championships, and came second to Agostini in the 500cc championship. He repeated this in 1967. www.autolife.com.np

Mike somehow got his bike to lean angles which were greater than his competitors could achieve, but he didn’t hang off the bike like modern riders do. He was famous for wearing through the leather on his boots so far that he would grind his toes on the road, with bloody results. And, perhaps as a result of his early grass track training, he would spin the rear wheel out of corners; a technique which was not widely used then. Overall, he won nine World Championships, 76 Grand Prix wins and fourteen T.T Races on the notoriously dangerous Isle of Man course. He was revered for his outstanding talent and versatility. He was a true sportsman, charismatic yet unassuming, he loved music and had a huge sense of fun. Another quality that set Mike on a league of his own was his ability to extract the maximum from any motorcycle in any condition, a crucial ability at a time when machinery rarely performed to perfection. Something Mike proved to the whole world in the 1967 Senior TT when he rode the Honda’s evil-handling RC181 to victory with a loose throttle and also set a lap record of 108.77mph, which stood for eight years. And all this was made possible despite his infamous lack of technical know-how. In 1968 he was awarded the British Empire Medal for his services to the sport. When there was nothing left to prove on two wheels, he also turned to motor racing. In his first full year of motor racing he finished third in the Formula 5000 Championship and third in the famous 24 hour race at Le Mans. He went on to win the Formula Two European Championship www.autolife.com.np

for the Surtees team, and then moved into Formula One. Mike’s Formula 1 career ended in 1974 whilst driving for the McLaren team when he sustained severe leg and foot injuries after crashing at Nurburgring. And not only was he a great racer. He was also a brave man - a quality that earned him the George Medal, the civilian Victoria Cross. He received this rare award for risking his own life while dragging Clay Reggazoni from his blazing car during the 1973 South African F1 Car GP. In 1978, after an eleven year retirement from bikes, he made a fairytale ‘comeback’ to win another Isle of Man T.T. and with it, his 10th World Championship. Reenthused by his spectacularly successful return to the Isle of Man, Mike was encouraged to have a few more rides. Mike appeared in Australia’s biggest production motorcycle race, the Castrol Six Hour at Sydney’s Amaroo Park. Mike then eventually became a devoted family man.

back of a truck that made an illegal turn in front of him. His daughter Michelle was killed on impact. Mike and his son David were taken to hospital and Mike died two days later. An ordinary incident turned into a disaster. His funeral was definitely one of the biggest and the annual Mike Hailwood Memorial Run still attracts

thousands of riders. He was a one-in-a-billion force of natural talent who had an instinctive ability to ride a motorcycle executed and with a humility rarely seen in today’s sportsmen. Mike Hailwood was and will always remain as one of the greatest motorcycle racer of all time. Mike Hailwood is a legend to which others can only aspire to...

But in a mocking twist of fate, after thousands of racing miles at breakneck speeds, Mike Hailwood died in a road accident on 21 March 1981. It was a Sunday night and h had gone to collect pizza for dinner when he ran into the July 2012

It

was back in 1997 that the Toyota Prius saw light of the day. The Prius went on sale first in Japan then, making it the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle. It was subsequently introduced worldwide only in 2000. The Prius is now sold in more than 80 countries and regions, with its largest markets being those of Japan and the United States. 15 years now, the hybrid is arguably the most iconic eco-friendly car on earth with sales having already

crossed the four million mark. Toyota took almost ten years to record one million hybrid sales, where in just the last five years three million Prius hybrids were sold. Celebrities like Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio are some of the long list of stars that own a Toyota Prius Hybrid. It is even rumoured that the Titanic superstar Leonardo owns five of it. With a large number of celebrities owning

the Prius, the Washington Post even once dubbed the hybrid as “Hollywood’s latest politically correct status symbol”. The Toyota Prius is a full hybrid electric mid-size car, formerly a compact sedan, developed and manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation. The Toyota Prius Hybrid Synergy Drive is a series-parallel full hybrid, sometimes referred to as a combined hybrid, a vehicle that can be propelled by gasoline and/or electric power. When the vehicle is turned on with the “Power” button, it is ready to drive immediately with the electric motor, while electric pumps warm the engine with previously saved hot engine coolant before the internal combustion engine is

started. The delay between starting the car and starting the internal combustion engine is approximately seven seconds. A button labelled “EV” maintains Electric Vehicle mode after being powered on and under most low-load conditions at less than 25 mph (40 km/h). This permits driving with low noise and no fuel consumption for journeys less than 1 mile (1.6 km). The car automatically reverts to normal mode if the battery becomes exhausted. There are two principal battery packs, the High Voltage (HV) traction battery, and a 12 volt battery known as the Low Voltage (LV) battery. Watch out for our full blown test review in the next issue!

Till then here’s what Mrs. Ritu Vaidya, Executive Director at United Traders Syndicate (UTS), had to say about the Toyota Prius: “The Prius breaks the mold cast from decades of auto making. There are the two motors that power the car. The electric motor can get the car moving at low speeds while the high efficiency 4-cylinder engine takes over for faster speeds and charges the batteries in the process. Its amazing fuel efficiency and environment friendliness is reason enough to love the machine. Furthermore, for a country without their own source of fuel and constant struggle for free flowing oil, this vehicle is a boon. We are hoping that the government will come to see the benefits that this vehicle will bring into the country in the long run with an overall decrease in oil consumption and not to mention the positive effect it has on the environment. Currently, we are doing our part to reduce the tax levied on the vehicles to 20%. When and if the government agrees to deduct the tax on Prius, it will be very affordable to the Nepali public. There is extreme potential for the vehicle in Nepal. The best things about the Prius is that it is battery as well as engine powered, minimum fuel consumption, barely any pollutant or wastage and above all you don’t have to plug it in to charge. A self sustainable eco friendly vehicle! What more could you ask for?”

Anil Keshari Shah CEO at MEGA BANK

ou know you are a Nepali when you know who Anil Keshari Shah is’. Trust me, you have heard of him. His rise to corporate success in the banking sector made him a household name in Nepal. Embarking on his road to success, he first joine`d Nepal Grindlays Bank (now Standard Chartered Bank) in an assisting position and moved further up on the corporate ladder as the Head of Consumer Banking and then later emerged as the Chief Operating Officer there. He then moved to Nabil Bank and served as the CEO there for 5 years. Currently Mr. Anil Shah is the CEO of Mega Bank. Sure there is hardly a publication today that hasn’t interviewed him. But for a change, we decided to give him a break from the usual banking stuffs and rather question him on his passion for automobiles. I bet you didn’t know that the man loves his cars. Well we didn’t know earlier either! We had a great time getting to know the automotive side of the charismatic Mr. Anil Shah, who is without doubt a powerhouse of confidence and talent.

AL: So tell us what’s parked in your garage at the moment? Anil Shah: The car that I drive around in is a Range Rover Vogue, and we have a Honda CR-V at home which my wife drives. AL: What do you prefer more? Bikes or Cars? Why? Anil Shah: I actually never learned to ride a motorcycle. When I was a kid, a family astrologer predicted that I would have a terrible accident on a motorcycle and I was advised to stay away from two wheelers. So it’s been cars always. But now that I see the bigger bikes around town, I feel a slight tinge of jealousy. AL: Hatchbacks, Sedans or SUVs? Anil Shah: Definitely SUV’s for two reasons. Firstly, our road conditions, which needs no explanation as to why? Secondly, I like to drive around and out of Kathmandu whenever I get the time to do so. So what better way to do it than in a SUV! AL: How did you first learn to drive and which is the first car you had a go on? Anil Shah: Like all young boys, I wanted to learn how to drive before I was legally allowed to do so. I first learned driving inside my home compound with the assistance of our driver Kancha Dai. However, the first time I drove out on the streets was when my father once had a mild heart attack and was admitted in the hospital. Since it just me and my brother who was around, I had to drive back and forth from the

www.autolife.com.np

We used to have a Mercedes 300D while in Delhi, and it was amazing to drive around. Maybe it’s the aura of the brand hospital to my home. I still remember clearly that I was just 15, almost legal to drive. AL: Is there a driver usually behind the wheels of your car or is it you who takes charge? Anil Shah: I prefer to drive myself any chance that I get. But for official purposes I have my driver take me around. Plus, driving around in the city does some serious damage to one’s blood pressure too. Doesn’t it? AL: Till date, on which car or bike you have had the best ever riding/driving experience? Anil Shah: It has to be the Mercedes 300D we used to have while in Delhi, and it was amazing to drive around. Maybe it’s the

aura of the brand, but the Mercedes stands above all the other cars that I have so far driven. AL: Personally, what have been the pros and cons of owning an exotic set of wheels in Nepal? Anil Shah: I think the best thing has to be the priceless experience of driving an exotic car. But, the downside has to be the maintenance. For instance, if my tire blows out, then I have to ship in the tyres myself as they aren’t readily available here. The other glitch is also the lack of proper roads. AL: One wicked or crazy thing that you have done on wheels? Anil Shah: My dad had bought me and my brother an old Ford Escort because he thought we would wreck his Merc. The vehicle had pretty much passed its prime with holes on the floor board and the driver seat held up by bricks. Don’t ask me how, but once we got it stuck between two lamp posts and it took a lot of

revving forward and reversing to finally get ourselves free. Yes in the process, we did some serious damage to the vehicle. AL: Your most memorable moment on a car or bike? Anil Shah: Back in Delhi, we used to own an open top classic Willy’s jeep that was customized with a huge proper air conditioner. And my brother and I used to cruise around in it with our long hairs and not a care in the world. The looks we got from people in the mid afternoon heat of Delhi were priceless, because they couldn’t see that our AC was keeping us cool. Those were the days! AL: Is there an ultimate dream car/bike that you’d like to have parked in your garage? Anil Shah: My dreams constantly evolve. Currently, I am lucky enough to own my dream car, the Range Rover. It’ll take you to the most elegant of parties and also easily get you out of

treacherous off road terrains. What more could you ask for? But I’ll want something else soon, I’m sure of it. AL: If you could wish for one automobile marquee to have a showroom here in Nepal, not yet present, which would it be? Anil Shah: I think all potential brands are already here. It’s not that I wouldn’t want to see Ferraris or Lamborghinis on our roads, but it would be completely pointless to wish for them without the proper roads to drive on. What I would like to see is more of Hybrid vehicles at subsidized rates. For a country that does not produce its own oil and has the largest expense on fuel, hybrids would definitely save a lot of money. AL: Where do you think is the best destination to drive/ride to in Nepal? Anil Shah: I only drive when I get out of the city, and it is then that you realize how beautiful our country really is. There is only so much that you can see from an airplane and experiencing the beauty of the country by road is so much the better. I love driving to Pokhara and Dhulikhel. But the best road I have so far drive in Nepal has to be the road to Dhading. It was simply amazing.

you get to see the lively markets and of cows too roaming about. Out on the highways, you have the majestic Himalayas and the beautiful greenery. These are the things that dreams are made of. And the worst thing has to be the unmanaged chaotic traffic on the road. Proper traffic management and strict regulations are a must.

quality check. If the government is charging so much tax to vehicle owners, it must give something back. And the best thing to give back would be proper quality roads to drive on. Also, since we depend a lot on tourists as a source of revenue, if we could get another access route out of the valley, they could get a completely different experience.

AL: If you were given complete control of the country, what changes would you bring about in the automotive scene of Nepal? Anil Shah: More roads have been built in the last 10 years than in the whole history of our country and it’s a good thing. Though they are serving their purpose of connectivity, most of them are dirt roads, gravelled roads or potholed roads. Now what needs to be done is a

AL: How do you feel about the road widening and new road construction projects that are going on in the capital? Anil Shah: It is something that had to be done sooner or later if we ever aim to be a top class country. In that aspect, we are headed in the right direction.

I love driving to Pokhara and Dhulikhel. But the best road I have so far drive in Nepal has to be the road to Dhading.

AL: Have you ever been in the MA PA SE police checking? If so, any funny incident? Anil Shah: It’s good thing that the government is serious about it and this has brought a change in the drinking and driving habits of people. But I do still believe that a certain limit should be set on the amount of alcohol intake. Now, a funny incident that happened is when I was

pulled over for a checking and the traffic commenced with their normal questioning, “Raksi piunu bhacha?” And as I was about to answer, a superior inspector came over and said to him, “Don’t you recognize the red frame spectacles? He’s Anil Shah and he doesn’t drink alcohol.” Seems, even if people may not recognize me, they do recognize my spectacles. (haha...) AL: Your message or word of advice to all the auto lovers and owners in the country. Anil Shah: Firstly, whatever vehicle you drive, love it, be proud of it and take good care of it. I’ve loved every car I’ve ever owned; from my old Ford Escort to my current Range Rover. Love your car and your driving experience will be much better. Secondly, drive carefully. Those three minutes of fast and fun driving/riding is not worth the next several years of pain and suffering. This goes out especially to the bikers.

AL: In your opinion, what is the worst thing about driving/riding in Nepal and what is the best? Anil Shah: The best thing about driving in Nepal is what you see outside the window. Here in the city,

emember that huge kid back in school who beat the shit out of you just for that packet of noodles? And that didn’t end just there! Every other time you showed up within the bully’s periphery, you were turned black and blue. Now, the Hummer too is almost like that bully who still towers above almost every other car in the world but unlike the noodles, likes to guzzle a lot of gasoline. Sadly, Hummer shut down its operation in early 2010 amid a failed takeover bid by a Chinese company and unable to bear the brunt of recession and controversies among go-green tree huggers. Interested buyers can now only get hold of the remaining models in stock, which are available among limited dealers around the globe. So we were fortunate enough to have a go on the 2010 Hummer H3 belonging to the generous Mr.Prabal Saakha, the man behind the Hummer brand in Nepal. Here’s the story how we unleashed the bully out on our roads.

EXTERIOR STYLING The Hummer H3 is the smallest among the Hummer models. But it still is the evil twin of its elder siblings and carries the full-size attitude all the way. The wide flared wheel arches above the huge tires, rugged slab like body panels and the iconic seven-bar chrome grill up front clearly gives the H3 its distinct identity from a distance. Providing the vehicle with extra ruggedness is the sturdy front and rear recovery hooks, spare wheel mounted on the tailgate and the just-for-show black bonnet vents.

48

July 2012

When one of these rolls up near you, it’s hard to ignore it. Sure the overall tank-like block designs might offer the aerodynamics equivalent of a brick, but if makes for a huge visual impact. Like it or not, but there’s just nothing else out there that looks just as mean and rough as this military styled SUV. On the roads, it easily turns heads from all quarters and makes other smaller cars nearby whimper around in fear. The solid exterior design is a complete overkill and the power of the Hummer brand will make sure you impress the heck out of

just anybody. But you might as well have a large garage to fit the H3 in. INTERIOR STYLING If you have been expecting something elegant and exceptional, then the cabin of the Hummer H3 is the last place to look into. The image of ruggedness that begins with the exterior seamlessly flows on the inside too. There’s well bolted hard wearing plastics all around with great fit and finish. The metallic faced centre console is simply laid with the buttons for four wheel drive options,

audio system and air conditioning. On the functionality aspects, you get power windows, power locks, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, automatic beam-adjust central rear view mirror, air conditioning, cruise control, six-CD changer multimedia player and Bluetooth. I have to admit that the seven-speaker stereo system is one of the best stock audio systems that I have heard in a car and can either easily set your drive into party mode or simply shatter your eardrums. There’s

www.autolife.com.np

also a tiny little digital display in the top corner of the rear-view mirror that gives readouts for outside temperature and compass direction. The steering wheel has a thick meaty feel and the gear lever is hefty and solid. Interestingly, the H3 has just one steering wheel stalk on the left side for controlling everything from indicators, lights, windscreen wipers to cruise controls, unlike two in most cars. The cushy seats are placed a bit low and

with the high rise window line you get that safely cocooned feel inside. On the flip side, the confined feel inside the cabin can be a little claustrophobic for some. Headroom is generous, and five passengers can fit comfortably. But the rear bench seems low relative to the floor and doesn’t offer much legroom for bigger sized adults. The 60/40 split rear seat can be folded to increase the cargo capacity which is great for light duties. Lastly, climbing into the highly perched Hummer isn’t the easiest, especially for people

like your Grandma, who will definitely curse you each time you decide to take her around on your H3.

The driving position is good and you ride very high which gives you a good view of your surroundings.

SAFETY ASPECT Safety wise, the Hummer H3 comes with not only front driver and passenger airbags, but side rear passengers as well as curtain airbags. Electronic Stability Control, anti-lock four-wheel disc brakes, brake-controlled traction control, child-seat anchors, and tirepressure monitoring are the other standard safety features on the H3. You also have the option for a rearview camera and rear parking assist which is actually great considering some of the blind spots it has. DRIVING IMPRESSION When seated inside, the first thing you notice is that it’s not as big as you might have imagined. Finding a comfortable driving position is easy and further aided by the manual seat adjust options and a tilt steering wheel. The driving position is good and you ride very high which gives you a good view of your surroundings. But even with the wide side mirrors, seeing what’s behind and below the H3 is a guess work until you get the hang of it. Outward visibility has been compromised in some directions due to the high window line and thick A-pillars. The driver really needs to keep in mind the blind spots especially when driving in our chaotic traffic. The H3 drives reasonably relaxed. Initially, acceleration from stop is leisurely but once past 3000

RPM, you can feel the 240bhp power and 325Nm torque of the 3.7 litre five-cylinder engine kicking in. The petrol engine provides a surprisingly satisfying pull for something that weighs over two tonnes. The drive is smooth without any drama and the steering has high levels of power assistance to turn the heavy vehicle around with the lightest of touches. The turning radius is also smaller than

expected and is easy enough to park around tights spots in the city. The braking is spot on and the sturdy suspension absorbs the bumps on the road long before they get to the passengers. It is quiet and comfortable in a straight line and through low speed corners but try not to rally it out of corners, unless you want to be reminded with your physics lessons in gravity. While cruising on the highway, the engine was surprisingly quiet and the cabin also completely cuts off any exterior sounds. The sense of security you get while driving the Hummer H3 is simply great. Since size counts for a lot in our roads, it’s big and tough appearance makes you feel safe. The Hummer H3 gives you that commanding feel when you drive it towering upon other road users and just in case you still do not get some respect, you might as well have a sub-machine gun fixed on the roof.

/// FINAL VERDICT Well, the Hummer H3 sure isn’t the right choice for you if practicality is the first priority. It’s rather meant for those die-hard fans of the Hummer brand for whom owning one of these is like a badge of honour. The motivation for purchasing a Hummer H3 has been and will always be based on emotion. It’s a big iconic brand that says more about the driver that most cars do. And if you really plan on getting one of these, go get it dirty and I promise you’ll have a lot of fun. Of course, be prepared to visit the fuel pump often as the H3 like all Hummers likes to drink a lot.

The H3 features an electronically controlled full-time four-wheel drive system which makes it suitable for both on-road and off-road driving. Electronically locking front and rear differentials are optional. Although the H3 did not venture to extreme off-road conditions in our hands, there’s little doubt that it will disappoint should owners suddenly feel bored of the smooth tarmac. It is a proper off road machine with great ground clearance, approach and departure angles. Technically it can climb a 60 degree incline, traverse a 40 degree slope and wade through two feet of water. So the H3 easily gives the impression that it’ll handle whatever off-road nastiness you throw at it. Allowed to play in the dirt, the Hummer H3 should be unstoppable.

making good things happen since 1911 Recently Chevrolet celebrated its 100th anniversary. In our tribute to their 100th birthday, we decided to dedicate some of our pages to the breakdown of their glorious era which help defined this great American marquee. words: saurav nepal

Chevrolet or Chevy is an American brand

of automobile company founded by Louis Chevrolet and General Motors founder William C. Durant in Detroit, Michigan on November 3, 1911. Louis Chevrolet was initially hired by Durant to drive race cars in promotional races. His reputation was then used by Durant as a foundation for the company. Their partnership though didn’t last long because of Louis insisting on making high quality cars and Durant’s vision of making affordable car for the general people. By 1920 Chevrolet Division began designing new models and styles to beat their competitors Ford and Dodge. Chevrolet changed the way Americans looked at automobiles. From sports cars, sedans, coupes to pickup trucks, Chevrolet diversified their products. This diversification led to immense popularity among the Americans towards the automobile marquee. Chevrolet was the first ones to introduce electric starter, electric headlamps, safety glass, fuel injection, anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control systems in their vehicles. Then their small block V8 started a new era in high-performance engine. Chevrolet had a great influence on the American automobile market during the 1950s and 1960s. By 1963, one out of every ten cars sold in the United States was a Chevy. Since they manufactured vehicles with so many features at a very affordable price, they gave fierce competition to other manufacturers. Similarly, Chevrolet also dominated the racing history. From NASCAR, American Le Mans Series, Indy 500, GRAND-AM Racing series, Belle Isle Grand Prix to Daytona, they achieved every single moment of glory. The famous North American brand is now present everywhere around the world. Many global Chevrolet vehicles are currently the best sellers in their respective country. In fact, cars with the unmistakable bow-tie Chevrolet logo are

now present all around the globe. There are though many conflicting claims regarding the inception of the company’s famous ‘bow-tie’ logo. The most accurate claim was made by Durant himself. According to him, the logo was inspired by a wallpaper design in a French hotel. In 1908 when he was in France, he saw the design on wallpaper and immediately tore off a piece thinking that it would make a good nameplate for a car. However according to his daughter, he sketched the logo on a piece of paper at the dinner table in 1929. Similarly, Durant’s wife Catherine claimed that this emblem was inspired from a newspaper ad of a product. Another explanation suggests that the logo was inspired by Louis Chevrolet’s native roots in Switzerland. In spite of these many variations in explanations, it is today one of the most recognized logo in the world. Though

there has been plenty on changes over the years, the logo’s design heritage has remained the same since its inception. Here’s our breakdown of Chevrolet’s past production models over the years of its existence and the cars that defined the Chevy’s of today.

1932 Chevrolet Sport Roadster Priced at a low $445, the Chevrolet Sport Roadster had a 6-cylinder, 3.2 litre overheadvalve engine. It was Chevrolet America’s favourite car when it was introduced. The 1932 Chevrolet Sport Roadster is still considered the best Chevy ever from the collector’s point of view.

1948 Chevrolet Pickup The Chevrolet Pickups which were made after the World War II, restyled GM’s design culture. These pickups were known for their reliability and versatility and eventually they became a favourite with the farmers and tradesmen.

1953 Chevrolet Corvette The Corvette is an American sports car which had innovative fibreglass body construction. It has been produced in six generations (1953-present). By 1956, a Corvette race car was launched for racing engine competitiveness.

1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Nomad The appealing and sleek Chevy Nomad amalgamated the midcentury modern design with the multi-functional station wagon. It had the similar 283 cubic-inch V8 producing 220hp similar to the Corvette. The Bel Air Nomad was the most expensive model way back then.

www.autolife.com.np

1914 chevrolet royal mail roadster In late 1913, two years after its inception, Chevrolet launched the 1914 “Royal Mail” roadster. The Royal Mail had a great visual appeal. Its reliable 4-cylinder engine had overhead valves and a premium design that contributed to its relatively high power rating.

1936 Chevrolet Suburban The Chevrolet Suburban is considered the grandfather of today’s modern SUV’s. General Motors have built around 2.4 million units of the Suburban in its 75-year long history. It was a 3400cc, inline 6-cylinder, 75 hp, and rear wheel driven carriage.

1949 Chevrolet Canopy Express During this year, Chevrolet launched the open-sided panel trucks called Canopy Express. These trucks were used for many types of delivery services like fresh fruits, vegetables etc.

1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe The Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe changed Chevrolet’s image from “durable but dull” to “rock N roll”. The two-toned Chevrolet represented the American roots. It re-energized Chevrolet’s image and made history with recordbreaking sales.

1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Coupe The Corvette Sting Ray Concept was the most exciting production car America had seen. The Sting Ray offered a fuel-injected V8 making 360 hp as standard and fibreglass body supported by a steel ladder frame chassis, all within an affordable price. July 2012

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Chevrolet launched the Chevelle SS at the time when the muscle car era was at peak. The Chevelle was a midsized car produced in three generations based on GM’s A-Body platform. The Chevelle had coupes, station wagons, sedans and convertibles. The Chevelle’s V8 churned out 360 hp to 450 hp.

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 also known as the “King of the Hill” was developed by GM’s British engineering and performance car subsidiary, Group Lotus. It was based on the C4 generation Corvette with an aluminiumblock V8 capable of producing 345 hp of power. The LT5 engine was extremely quick doing 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds with a top speed of almost 180+ mph.

The fifth-generation Corvette debuted in the year 1997. Bodypanel was composed of other materials rather than fibreglass. It was equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission with a 50-50 front-to-rear weight distribution. The build quality and the performance were exceptionally good for the moderate price.

Chevrolet launched the 4th generation Camaro in 1993. The Z28 featured the Corvette’s V8. The Z28 got a 5.7-liter V8 producing 275 horsepower and a six-speed manual transmission and anti-lock brakes as standard. Optional equipment included allspeed traction control.

2011 Chevrolet Volt

July 2012

The El Camino “passenger-car pickup” was a coupe utility vehicle. Based on the Chevelle, El Camino which means “the road” or “the path” in Spanish, had car like platform and styling combined with the functionality of a truck. The El Camino was sort of a muscle car/truck.

1993 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

1997 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

When the press asked the Chevy Managers, “What is a Camaro?” The reply was, “a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs”. The Chevrolet Camaro was launched as a competitor to the Ford Mustang. It was available as a 2-door coupé or convertible with either inline 6 or V8 power plants.

1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS

1989 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1

The Chevy Volt is a plug-in hybrid. The 1.4-liter fourcylinder internal combustion engine which makes 149bhp, draws power from a lithium-ion battery pack. The Volt’s internal combustion engine which runs on premium fuel gets ignited as a replacement power source for the electric motor.

1969 Chevrolet Camaro

The Chevrolet’s full-size Hybrid Tahoe SUV was jointly developed by BMW, DaimlerChrysler and GM. This hybrid system can combine both gasoline and diesel engines. It comes with an electric power assisted V8, which can run on all cylinders or a V4 in case of cylinder deactivation system.

2012 Chevrolet Corvette Centennial Edition Chevrolet launched the 2012 Centennial Edition Corvette to mark its 100th birthday and pay homage to its rich motorsports heritage. It can be ordered on any 2012 Corvette models and is finished in carbon flash metallic with satin-black graphics and unique Centennial Satin Black wheels and red brake callipers. www.autolife.com.np

CLASS

APART Words and Photography: al team

The

Tata Indica is one of the oldest clan of hatchback that has still been selling here in Nepal. Over the several years of its existence it has constantly evolved and the new Tata Vista is the first big step in the right direction. It promises to raise the bar by quite a few notches especially with its ‘The Sedan Class’ tagline. So we drive the series’ most powerful petrol offering, the Tata Vista Safire GZX, around Kathmandu to see for ourselves if it delivers on the promise.

EXTERIORS At the first glance from up front, the new Vista looks very similar to its elder sibling, the Tata Manza. The elongated and semi-circular triple barrel headlamps, along with the redesigned bumper and chrome grille enhances the Vista’s looks. You can immediately realize the generous application of chrome bits on this

car as there is a lot of chrome strips abound on the front, side flanks and on the door handles. A two tone 14-inch stylish alloy wheel compliments the entire design. However, the changes at the rear are very subtle. The rear gets lightly smoked tail lamps and a prominent pearl black mirror-polished tailgate garnish at the bottom of the rear windscreen.

Though the design concept of the new Vista actually remains very similar to the Indica models, the slight changes have brought forward a fresher look. Though the design concept of the new Vista actually remains very similar to the Indica models, the slight changes have brought forward a fresher look. It is a good example of what the right choice of modifications can do to a car’s appeal.

INTERIOR There is a two tone colour treatment inside which makes the interiors look a sort of up-market. The upper parts of the fascia and door pads have been done in black while the lower part of the fascia and door pads is finished in a lighter beige colour. The plastics are not yet the best but fit and finish is great with the tight panel gaps. Surprisingly, the instrument panel is positioned at the centre unlike in most cars and does take some time getting used to. Just below sits an integrated six-speaker music system with USB support, Bluetooth connectivity for up to five phones and steering-mounted audio controls. One can also dial numbers from the dashboard keypad and answer/reject phone calls from the steering mounted controls. Under seat

tray, electrically adjustable door mirrors, height and lumbar support adjustable driver’s seats, tilt-able steering wheel and an illuminated key-hole ring are some of the extra features in the new Vista. To summarize, the Vista does come loaded to the brim with notable features and goodies for its segment. Where this car excels is in space and comfort, as the Vista stays true to its tagline and offers excellent space and comfort for its class like a sedan. Interior cabin space is one of the best in the segment and every

www.autolife.com.np

occupant in the car should have no issues stretching out comfortably. The boot space has been slightly compromised due to this but it is spacious enough and you also have the option to fold the split seats to build more space. Safety has been given equal importance with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, collapsible steering column, crumple zones and side intrusion beams. The rear wiper interestingly is an intelligent one as it automatically switches on when you put the car in reverse, considering that the front wiper is also on.

PERFORMANCE Tata currently offers four engine options on the new Tata Vista range - The 1.2-liter Safire 65, 1.4-liter Safire 90, 1.3-liter TDi and 1.4-liter Quadrajet. Our Vista Safire 90 was powered by a 1.4 litre engine and capable of producing 90bhp of power at 6000 RPM and 116Nm of torque at 4750 RPM. First of all, to start the Vista, there’s this new feature called Clutch-to-Start. This means that you need to have the clutch fully depressed to ignite the

engine. So don’t be surprised when you turn on the key and the car does not fire up. This system actually helps is reducing the risks associated with re-cranking the engine when it is already running. There is a decent amount of torque with minimum turbo lag and driving inside Kathmandu is a breeze. This means that in city traffic, you don’t really have to work on the gears or the gas pedal to keep moving. The clutch is light and the 5-speed gearbox is relatively easy

to operate with pretty good shift action. Although Tata claims a smoother gear shift due to improved shift mechanism, it is still a bit on the hard side. The Indica range is also better known for its comfortable suspension set-up. This new Vista is no different and easily goes about absorbing the typical bumps on the city roads with only really big potholes leaving the Vista a bit ruffled. But due to the softer suspension setup, we could feel a certain

degree of body roll when speeding through the windy roads towards Dhulikhel. So you really can’t enjoy playing enthusiastically with the Vista like some sporty hatchbacks in the market. But there is no interference during city driving and in a typical day to day driving the Vista does the job perfectly well. Though there is room for improvement, steering feel is good and braking with the aid of ABS works well. On the economy side, the new Tata Vista claims to deliver a mileage of around 16 kmpl.

VERDICT The point of the Vista is to offer the comfort of a sedan within the dimensions of a hatchback and with what Tata currently has on offer we think they have pretty much proved that point. The new Vista with its features, space and comfort makes for an attractive option due to its value for money proposition in its segment. It is a significant step in the right direction and could just be the image changer for the Indica clan. Unlike the older Indicas, the new Vista will appeal to the younger generations too and makes sense for them to boast around, ‘I drive a Tata Vista’. There were already plenty of reasons to buy an Indica earlier and the all new Vista gives you some more…

MOVIE review

DUST TO GLORY

Dust to Glory (2005) is a documentary about the famous Baja 1000 off-road race and was filmed throughout the 2003 event. The Baja 1000, an annual off-road race held in Baja, Mexico attracts hundreds of racers, their souped-up machines, and thousands of fans. The Baja 1000 is one of the world’s premier desert racing events; taking place both on and off the roads. The annual road rally pits drivers against punishing conditions as they attempt to cover the thousand-mile course in 36 hours or less. The race across Baja’s peninsula is unpredictable, gruelling and raw. Dust to Glory takes viewers into the middle of the race, with not just camera crews following in the action, but also with cameras mounted to the cars of several drivers racing. To capture the vast desert panoramas and intense action of the race, the film team utilized fifty-five cameras, four helicopters, a four-passenger buggy camera car and a crew of over eighty people. This action-adventure documentary chronicles this most notorious and dangerous race in the world. Thousands of participants, generations of families and racing icons such as Robby Gordon, Mario Andretti, Jimmy Vasser and Motorcycle Supercross legend Mike Mouse McCoy come together to experience the thrill and glory of the infamous race - an event of sheer human determination. These amazing footages from the Baja off-road race are sure to give viewers an adrenaline rush. Filled with swooping camera angles, race action and plenty of dust, there are no villains in this telling, just noble competitors for whom winning is secondary to the thrill of just being in the race itself. 70

THE DRIVER

The Driver is a 1978 crime film directed by Walter Hill and starring Ryan O’Neal, Bruce Dern and Isabelle Adjani. The film is notable for its impressive car chases, no-frills style of filmmaking, and its rarely speaking, unnamed titular character. This is a film about a quiet getaway driver who is always composed even when pursued by several cop cars, and a dirty police detective who will strike deals with known criminal just to put the Driver behind bars. The Driver tells the story of a man who has almost no connections what so ever. He has no friends, no family and lives in a tiny one room apartment by himself. He dresses well and earns his living driving criminals around the streets of L.A. Robbers of all kinds need him and he’s expensive because he is the best. This woman gets him connected with his clients for whom he is hired to be the getaway driver during heists. Aiding the Driver is the beautiful and enigmatic player Isabelle Adjani, who also helps double-cross the Detective Bruce Dern. Ryan O’Neal plays the professional driver who steals cars to drive as getaway vehicles for big-time robberies. Hot on the Driver’s trail is the Detective, a conceited cop who refers to the driver as “the cowboy who’s never been caught” and is willing to go to any length to bring him down. The Detective becomes so obsessed that he sets up a bank job by blackmailing a seedy gang of bank robbers to help in order to entice, trap, and ultimately arrest, the Driver.

THE DUCATI monster 796 OWNERSHIP REVIEW autolife

INTERACTIVE

It

has been almost a year since Turbo Motors Trading introduced the exotic Ducati motorcycles to the Nepalese enthusiasts of the brand. We were also fortunate enough to have a go on the two of the company’s early offerings, the Ducati Monster 796 and Hypermotard 796 for the ride review feature of our 4th Issue of AutoLife back in early 2012. Both of these bikes simply blew our mind and we still haven’t been able to stop ourselves to come up with a fool-proof bank robbery plan, in our high hopes to get each of us one of these Italian bombshells. Today almost every product from the Ducati line-up is available in Nepal with the likes of the Diavel, Multistrada, SportClassic GT1000, Streetfighter 848, 1198, 848, Monster 696, Monster 796 and Hypermotard 796 already set loose on our roads. So until we hit gold and get our own in the near future, we decided to speak to three owners of Ducati Nepal’s best selling Monster 796 on the current ownership experience of their Ducati. So here’s what these lucky Ducatisti’s had to say...

Dhiroj Shrestha Program Coordinator at Ace Institute of Management Gaurighat, Kathmandu Riding the Monster inside the >> Firstly, unlike most sport valley is a bit difficult though, bikes, the Ducati Monster given the fact that our roads 796 is really easy to handle. are usually either laden with The broad rear wheel and potholes or chaotically full upright seating position of traffic. But when you ride makes it easier to manoeuit on the open highway, the vre the bike around in traffic. experience is quite different. Not that our highways don’t have potholes and disturbances;

but when you have an open stretch in front of you astride a 803cc displacement Monster, everything else takes the back seat and you helplessly just enjoy the ride. I have taken it out of the valley only twice and the experience was literally awesome. The frequent low speed twist and turns in our highways can be a bit annoying at times but you really get to experience the bike to its optimum when you find that long stretch ahead of you. The 87bhp of power and 78Nm of torque easily allows you to stay ahead of the other vehicles, and most importantly, the efficient double disc brakes up front and the single disc at the rear helps to avoid any unfortunate events. I personally don’t think that there are any unfavour-

able factors of owning a Ducati. Generally people may argue about it being high on maintenance. But I would still say even that is worth every penny for the unparalleled experience that you get in return. I am quite happy with the after sales service provided by Turbo Motors as well. Be it getting spare parts, regular servicing of the bike or a few changes here and there, the technicians at the local Ducati Service Centre are very punctual and thoroughly professional. On the favourable factors of owning the Monster, all I have to express is that it’s a DUCATI!! Need I say more? The sole reason I chose this machine over something else, was due to the brand itself. Well the name is enough, isn’t it? At least for me…

I personally don’t think that there are any unfavourable factors of owning a Ducati. 72

Since the Ducati Monster is basically a street purpose bike, it is easier to ride it regularly even in busy streets of Kathmandu. The wide handle bar, single sided swingarm and its relatively light weight of 167kg makes it is comfortable bike to handle. It’s a perfect bike for our roads. I also like its good ground clearance, quick acceleration, optimum mileage, etc. When it comes to liking the features on a Ducati, the list literally goes on. The only disadvantage I guess is the engine heat that it generates in the city and at time makes

it really difficult for the rider as well as pillion to move along. The dealer here also has a proper service facility and is also very prompt in their after sales service. This is also another reason for me to choose Ducati among all. If you ask me about the service related costs, then I must say that it is truly worth it. My best ride so far on the Ducati has to be the tour to Karnali with the Nepal Ducati Owners Club family. Riding from Kathmandu all the way to Karnali in a day was sure hectic but it was a lifetime experience for all of us and yes, most of us still can’t stop raving about it.

THE extreme ride to sermathang

I carefully navigated through the narrow path as my friend kept a close watch and we successfully crossed the zone.

J

ust like how I crave for my music and photography, I am equally passionate about motorcycle touring. My affair with motorcycle touring first began when I bought my Yamaha YBX 125 back in early 2001. Over the years I have ridden to various places like Trishuli, Pokhara, Tansen, Butwal, Lumbini, Bhairahawa, Narayanghat, Hetauda, Daman, Kulekhani, Dharan, etc. In fact earlier in the days, I used to ride with my friends to Hetauda after every 6 weeks, just to get a haircut. It might seem absurd now, but we did that unfailingly for a continuous six years. But now due to personal and career commitments, it had been a long gap since I last hit the highway. After a proper two weeks of planning, I decided for an overly adventurous ride to a place called Sermathang. On the return route from Sundarijal during my trek to Gosaikunda, I had heard about this remote Sherpa village from the local villagers. But I was still not sure if my Bajaj Pulsar 200 could actually be ridden all along the way to Sermathang. Regardless, after some thorough research on Google Earth, I decided to set out. On hearing my plan, my work colleague Sanjay CK was also visibly excited and tagged along for this three day extreme roadtrip on February 18th, 2012

pick up my friend Sanjay. On every trip it had become a ritual for me to set out early in the morning and satisfy my appetite at some local eatery down the road. I picked up my friend at Hadigaun and at 7:30am we set out for Sundarijal. Before starting the climb, we stopped by a roadside restaurant and consumed the regular breakfast fare of selroti- tarkarichiya. The road was much worse than expected, with lots of loose mud laid everywhere. While some of the path was bumpy with lots of stones; the others were just too muddy to navigate through. Sanjay had to get off from the bike many times

It was a relief to cruise along the Arniko Highway towards Banepa where we stopped by for some refreshments. DAY 1

Just like on the day of every road trip, I woke up early with lot of anxious thoughts going around in my mind. I took the first camera shot for the trip of my beloved wife and our precious daughter, who were both still in deep sleep, and prepared myself without disturbing their slumber. The weather seemed good with clear skies and I left home on an empty stomach to

www.autolife.com.np

and give me the required push up steep paths. As we rode along soaking in the thrill of a motorcycle ride and appreciating the scenery around, we made it to Chisapani height at roughly 10:30am. The clear weather welcomed us with close up views of the Langtang Mountain Range. There was also a small pond by the name Dhap Pokhari nearby and we rejuvenated our tired bodies by taking a relaxed dip in the clean and cool water. We then moved toward the bazaar, which I was familiar with from my trek to Gosaikunda. It was after spotting some motorcycles around the town back then, that I realized it was possible to ride up here. One of the pleasures of a roadtrip in Nepal is having a proper local lunch of steaming dal-bhatmasu, and we made the most out of it by having our lunch on a rooftop restaurant enjoying the view of the mountain ranges. July 2012

We then continued on the downhill run toward Pati Bhanjyang. I was amused to cover this distance in just ten minutes flat, as earlier it had taken me more than an hour to hike till here. This place has its own raw charm and it was one of those memorable spots in the tour. As we moved along, the road that connects Chisapani to Melamchi happened to be blocked due to a recent landslide. There existed only a two feet wide road across the steep ridge and being the unstoppable ones, we took the risk. A slight error meant a never to be seen again fall down the hill! I carefully navigated through the narrow path as my friend kept a close watch and we successfully crossed the zone. We continued towards Melamchi enjoying the views all around us and reached the tunnel constructed by the Melamchi Drinking Water Project. We stopped in the tunnel for a photograph and continued the ride, speculating on the possibilities of the drinking water reaching Kathmandu Valley in our lifetime. After an hour’s ride, we reached Bahunpati and made it to Melamchi Bazaar at 2pm. We then stopped at a

their speciality Tongba, a millet-based alcoholic beverage drink. After some uncountable sips, we called it a night.

DAY 2

We woke up very late the next morning due to the tiredness. It was my first time up here and this Sherpa village was much more beautiful than I had expected. The place offered good views of the Gosaikunda range, Langtang range and the Indrawati River snaking through the hills of Helambu. Located at an altitude of roughly 2700m atop a picturesque ridge, Sermathang is also popular for its artistic Buddhist monasteries. Turned out that it occasionally snowed here and we had missed fresh snowfall by just two days. After a heavy breakfast at our hotel, we set out for a hike to a nearby village called Tarkegyang. But unfortunately, after two hours of walking we had to give up and return to the hotel as my friend began to feel a sudden pain in his legs. So we spent the day resting and later in the evening chatted up and played a few rounds of cards with the foreign trekking tourists in the hotel lobby.

It was my first time up here and this Sherpa village was much more beautiful than I had expected. cold store for some refreshments. In the mean time, we also chatted up with the locals and confirmed our route to Sermathang. We were much glad that there was already a bus route all the way up. Two different routes from Melamchi led to Sermathang and we decided to take the first route ahead of us and return from the other. As we crossed the village of Taramarang and Chanaute, we finally made it to Sermathang at 5pm in the evening after the last uphill climb. We decided to camp for the night at Yangri Lodge, which was the best and most expensive hotel in the area. We were charged Rs.100 for a bed and dinner cost us Rs.350 per plate. It was a very reasonable pricing, considering we also had hot showers on offer. We enjoyed the sunset view and made the evening walk towards the local bhatti to gulp down 78

DAY 3

It was the last day of our trip and with our bodies recharged from the previous days rest, we got up early. After clearing our bills at the hotel and some photo sessions with the local kids, we started our journey back to Melamchi through the other route. Just about 10 minutes into the ride, we stumbled into this artistic and huge statue of Buddhist importance. The monument was nearly 15 feet tall and constructed on a beautiful and peaceful spot. We then rode across mustard fields and navigated through various hills to finally reach Chanaute at 11:30am. We made it to Melamchi just in time for lunch. After a heavy and delicious lunch, we relaxed by the riverside and washed up the motorcycle which had accumulated dirt all over it from the muddy track. Then we rode non-

www.autolife.com.np

stop for an hour till Paachkhal and finally got back on black topped road. It was a relief to cruise along the Arniko Highway towards Banepa where we stopped by for some refreshments. It was just 3pm in the afternoon and both of us just didn’t really want to return back home as we were still hungry for some more adventure. So we decided to ride to Nagarkot from Nala. Finally after a torturous uphill off road ride, we found ourselves in Nagarkot at 5pm in the evening. As we enjoyed the sunset view from Nagarkot Tower, we finally realized that we had enough of adventure. With refreshed minds we then headed back home, to be gladly greeted by our loved ones at the doorstep. Words cannot truly express the scenic beauty that Nepal presents you with wherever you go. Since I am no poet, I hope my photography did compensate for the poetry part. Simply all I can say is, Nepal is a wonderful and amazing place to travel. This extreme 280km to and fro motorcycle road trip will always remain etched in my heart and I am glad to have come up with another plan just as I finished my write-up for this trip. I am looking forward for more adventure in the next round and hope to share it again with AutoLife Magazine. Happy Riding, Happy Travelling.

up with this innovative event to bring together various categories of adventure junkies under one roof. The event was held to introduce and promote outdoor adventure sports in Nepal. The festival was also conducted with a Leave No Trace policy and the organizers along with volunteers cleaned

up the festival site on the last day. Extensive months of preparation, hard work and dedicated effort finally did bear its fruit as the event ended with flying colours. Basically, the event was a three day celebration cum competition of various muscle powered and adrenaline filled

adventure sports. The popular hill top Hattiban Resort, located at an altitude of 1852m and just 15 km south west of Kathmandu, played the perfect host while various sponsors tagged along to make this event successful. The three main theme of the events were trail running, rock climbing, www.autolife.com.np

and mountain biking. Numerous other activities like the iceaxe Pull-Up, acrobatic paragliding, dyno competition, slack line competition, flying fox, zip lines, mud run, live DJ music, etc were also included among others. In addition to sports, the HOF also included interactive exhibitions, discussions about pressing environmental issues, demo areas, vendors, a trade fair, adventure films, and mountainlifestyle parties. to feature their efforts with the mountain biking events, as it is also one of our motives to promote cycling in Nepal. THE MARMOT NIGHT MTB UPHILL CHALLENGE The first cycling event of the festival was the Marmot Night MTB Uphill Challenge. In this race, 20 cyclists

lined up at the bottom of the hill and slug their way to the top of the track in the dark constantly cheered by a lively crowd. The podium placements were as follows: 1st - Narayan Gopal 11 minutes 38 seconds 2nd - Aayman Tamang 12 minutes 23 seconds 3rd - Raj Kumar Shrestha 12 minutes 52 seconds HATTIBAN MTB SUPER CHALLENGE The second day’s first event was the Hattiban MTB Super Challenge. Despite the small tantrum from the Rain Gods the previous night, the racers were still full of enthusiasm to battle

it out. The race was held over a 2.5km track winding through the slippery and slushy track. Once again the podium looked very familiar as the winners of last night held their spots in the same position. 1st - Narayan Gopal 1 hour 3 minutes 18 seconds 2nd - Aayman Tamang 1 hour 4 minutes 19 seconds 3rd - Raj Kumar Shrestha 1 hour 6 minute 5 seconds CHAIN SUPER D Later that afternoon, things moved on a much faster lane.
