HOT HATCHES W
e have come a long way. Haven’t we? Nineteen issues and still going down the road bloody fast! And as a reward to our passionate efforts, this month was proof enough to our progress and presence in the market. Much to our delight, this issue marks our first ever invitation to a grand media unveiling across border for the Ford Eco Sport in Goa. Our special thanks goes out to GO Ford, the authorized distributors for Ford vehicles in Nepal, for sweating it out to fly us down there on an all expense paid trip. Coincidentally, this month turned out to be a special one for Ford as well, with the motor company celebrating their 110th anniversary. Read more about our experience of the EcoSport and Ford’s Evolution inside these hallowed pages. On the regular test front, we got our hands behind three brand new vehicles launched in the country. And great fun it was, as all three are ‘hot hatches’ for its segment. Read more about the sporty value-for-money Tata Vista D90, trendy Yamaha Ray and the capable 2014 Trek 4300 Four Series. Then there are some detailed info about the other latest launches in the market - the all new Hyundai i-Gen i20 and Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350cc & 500cc. Read some about them inside, before we bring you a full-fledged review in the next issue. This month was abuzz with a lot of motoring events as well. We gaped in awe at the 2013 Kathmandu Bike Festival, rode along with the motorcycles of yesteryears at the Enfield & Vintage Riders Reunion, witnessed a pack of classic VW Beetles drive to Jiri and raced ourselves against the time set at the Vista D90 City Chase. The rest on feature include some information on the new AlpineStars riding apparels available in town, a DIY care guide for cyclists while riding in the monsoons and a recommended compilation of some of the most inspiring books from the automotive world.
So that should be it! You may flip now to see if your photo made it to the READERS PHOTO section or if you just won the QUIZ…

CORRIGENDUM In last month’s issue, the price for the Honda CRF250L was inadvertently mentioned as Rs.8,75,000/-. The actual price for the motorcycle is Rs.7,75,000/-. The error is highly regretted.

EXCLUSIVE EXCLUSIVE: WE DRIVE THE FORD ECOSPORT IN GOA
We find ourselves in India, participating in the global ‘Technical Deep Dive and Drive’ event for the Ford EcoSport held in Goa. Being the first few from Nepal to have previewed and driven the all-new revolutionary compact SUV from Ford, here’s an exclusive coverage of the experience.
WORDS: AYUSH DHAUBANJAR PHOTOS: FORD INDIA
Before this, I had never been invited to test drive a new vehicle in a destination beyond the borders of Nepal. Neither had I been to Goa, nor had the chance to soak in the luxury of a night at the Park Hyatt. Now from a practical point of view, I never thought it was possible to kill two birds with one stone. Well in my case, that was three! But, the good folks from the Ford Motor Company in India and Nepal were kind enough to show me how it’s actually done. A revolutionary product calls for an equally revolutionary unveiling. So on the 11-12th of May, 2013, Ford India had organized an extensive 'Deep Technical Dive and Drive' event for their new Ford EcoSport at the Park Hyatt Resort & Spa, Goa. And guess what? We were one among the privileged 150 media representatives from around the globe invited to the all expense paid mega event spread over two weeks. Seriously, whoever quoted that there was no such thing as free lunches now deserves a tight slap across the cheek!

AUTOLIFE June 15, 2013
First of all, we at AutoLife are highly grateful to GO Ford, the authorized distributors for Ford vehicles in Nepal, for having ensured our participation in this global 'Deep Technical Dive and Drive' event for the Ford EcoSport in Goa. After a night in Delhi, I found myself in Goa in the afternoon of 11th May with three other media colleagues from Kantipur, The Himalayan Times and ECS Media. We checked into our rooms at the Park Hyatt Resort and after freshening up, an extensive technical briefing on the Ford
EcoSport was in order at the beachside premises of the resort. To start off, I must say that this event was simply nothing like the usual press release events that I had usually witnessed in Nepal. The technical deep dive was truly an eye opener for anybody who wanted to know all about the EcoSport. Even though I had done my fair share of research on the Internet, the briefing event provided much more insight. The event had nearly every individual

involved with the EcoSport development process coming up on stage and justifying their efforts. They say that it's always best to hear from people who know best. So the event had presenters from the likes of Ford India's Executive Director, General Manager and Powertrains Development Manager, EcoSport Global Chief Program Engineer, Asia Pacific Vehicle Programs Director and SYNC Engineering Manager, Chief Designer of the EcoSport, etc coming up on stage to clearly explain the purpose of the EcoSport from their respective viewpoints. Everything from the compact crossover SUV design, the revolutionary EcoBoost powertrain to the innovative SYNC system was passionately explained with captivating audio/visual aids. The explanations were so well detailed that at the end of the presentation there literally was no question left to ask. The media briefing was followed by a lavish cocktail reception, with the elite Ford team openly mingling with the invitees over drinks, snacks and dinner. Interestingly, over conversations, most

Now having learned everything there was to know about the EcoSport, we called it a night, looking forward to tomorrow’s test drive session. The next day, two journalists were allotted one Ford EcoSport each, with the drive route and designated driver for each route

clearly marked by the organizers. The cars were numbered serially and we had to drive accordingly in a convoy style, with a Ford Endeavour as the Pilot car setting the pace up front. The 140km drive route took us through a variety of terrains from traffic logged city roads, bumpy patches, fast two laned highways, narrow village routes to fine uphill and downhill hilly stretches. The EcoSport felt very easy to drive with the SUV like towering view from the inside and the peppy ready-tomove EcoBoost motor always had power

available on tap. In spite of the engine being turbocharged, there was hardly any noticeable turbo lag in the lower RPM's. The revolutionary three cylinder motor felt very refined and provided a performance unmatched by any other 1000cc motor I have driven before. In fact, with the EcoBoost technology, the engine provides an adrenaline rush unmatched by even some 1600cc motors. The clutch shifting process and the slick gearbox was another joy. The EcoSports's suspensions has been set up well to absorb our kind of bumpy sections on the road and inspires the driver to speed up around the corners with minimum body roll. Though not really an off roader, its high ground clearance will give the required confidence should one want to venture off the road.
On the outside, the EcoSport looks great all around especially with the huge mouthed muscle car like Ford grille up front and the tail gate mounted spare wheel like in a SUV at the rear. The smooth flowing aerodynamic lines across the EcoSport complete the sporty facade. It has a well put together stylish interior as well. Inside, soft-touch fabrics, tight gaps and the global Ice Blue dashboard illumination all reinforce superior quality and craftsmanship. Controls and knobs are ergonomically placed while seats are designed to be soft enough for comfort
and firm enough for longer journeys. The SYNC voice integrated system adds further appeal and the automatic climate control ensured that we stayed cool even with the mercury boiling in Goa.

From our experience, we are pretty sure that the EcoSport will not only set a new benchmark in its segment, but will stand as a strong alternative for similarly priced cars in other segment too. Though a 4WD model would have been an icing on the cake for our market, if priced right and well below the nearest competitor, it will go a long way in Nepal. Considering that Nepal is a SUV loving market, who will not want to have this crossover at a reasonable price! Now to wait for its launch in Nepal and test drive it on our roads for a detailed review...

features
The top-end Titanium variant of the Ford EcoSport features a revolutionary 1-litre EcoBoost petrol engine. Wait! Don’t be let down by the small displacement. Though using 20% less fuel than a traditional 1.6 litre petrol engine, this turbocharged engine is actually capable of delivering the power of a 1.6 litre motor, with 123 bhp of power and 170 nm of torque! This “2012 International Engine of the Year” holds more than 125 patents. The Ford EcoSport will also be available with the fuel-economical 1.5-litre petrol engine with twin independent variable camshaft timing or a 1.5-litre diesel engine, well-suited to urban driving conditions. The EcoSport comes loaded with Ford’s award winning Microsoft SYNC technology, an integrated in-vehicle communications and entertainment system. It seamlessly connects your Bluetooth and USB devices so you can make and receive calls, play your favourite songs, or have your text messages read out to you. Just say the voice commands and the SYNC does the rest. The SYNC system also incorporates an intelligent Emergency Assistance program that automatically connects your paired phone to an allotted emergency number during a crash. The car automatically plays a message which informs the operator about the crash and provides the latitude and longitude of the location.
www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal
The EcoSport puts 200mm of ground clearance between you and the road, potholes, ditches or whatever else is in your way. Add the good approach/departure angles and 550mm water wading capability, and you’re pretty much ready for anything like in any urban SUV. Every uphill start on the Ford EcoSport will be perfect with the Hill Launch Assist system. The Hill Launch Assist stops the car from rolling back for a few seconds after you take your foot off the brake, giving you time to smoothly accelerate away. So if someone stops right behind you, you make a clean getaway! Regardless of where your adventures take you, the Ford EcoSport is more than equipped to ensure that your safety is never compromised. With Reverse Park Assist, Antilock Brake System, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, front passenger and side curtain airbags, the EcoSport offers you and your loved ones complete protection and ensures your peace of mind. With Smart Keyless Entry, customers no longer need their key to unlock the SUV or to start the engine. They can unlock the doors automatically by pulling the door handle; push the Ford Power Start button and go. Although compact on the outside, it’s roomy and adaptable on the inside. Fold down the 60:40 rear seats and there’s enough room to fit a 560-liter washing machine!

Hatchbacks are one of the fastest evolving segments amongst four wheelers in the auto industry. Being the market leader in an auto industry like ours, regular upgrades are very necessary to stay on top of the game. The Tata Indica and Vista series of hatchbacks has been a major competitor in this segment and has seen its fair share of upgrades over the decades of existence. But what you see here today in its latest avatar is a huge change from the modest impression set by its predecessors. It’s time to change opinions with the all new sporty Tata Vista D90 zooming in.
The contrasting sunroof-like black top panel and the dual tone alloy wheels further add to the style statement of the car.
EXTERIORS At first glance, to the casual viewer, the D90 might appear as a better looking modified version of the Vista. The top end ZX+ variant comes with a sporty body kit, comprising of an aggressive front and rear bumper, side skirting, chrome strips and a racy tail spoiler. The contrasting sunroof-like black top panel and the dual tone alloy wheels further add to the style statement of the car. But a bigger wheel could have defined the sporty intentions much better. Those wheels just seem a little small compared to the rest of the car. Other aspects and dimensions of the car are similar to the previous Vista with the swept back headlamps, smoked column tail lamp, unique fog lamps and an imposing front grille. Fit and finish is great with clean and tight shut lines on the well finished body panels. With its loud and sporty styling, the Vista D90 reflects as an upmarket youth-centric sporty hatchback.

The top-end ZX+ variant gets a 6.7-inch touchscreen Blue5 tech multimedia system that combines the entertainment, navigation and communication functions.
INTERIORS Significant changes are visible in the interior as well. The whole dashboard is different from the previous models, because it’s now borrowed from the Manza. The black and beige two-tone dashboard looks neat and thankfully the previously centre-mounted instrument cluster is now where it belongs. The centre console houses a small multi-function display that shows real-time and average fuel consumption, distance-to-empty, ambient temperature and a digital clock. The moonlit white illumination looks classy and creates a pleasant ambiance at night. The top-end ZX+ variant gets a 6.7-inch touchscreen Blue5 tech multimedia system that combines the entertainment, navigation and communication functions. It is complete with media compatibility of pretty much every kind. It also features a radio, Bluetooth connectivity and a voice-enabled GPS navigation system. The instrument panel has soft touch finish and the door pads have fabric inserts, which makes them feel quite luxurious. Other convenience features include 2-way adjustable steering wheel with audio/Bluetooth controls, 6-way height adjustable driver seat with lumbar support, intelligent rear wiper, automatic climate control, electrically adjusted

ORVMs, rear charging point and follow-me- home headlamps. The panels are cleaner cut, the plastic quality is better and the fit and finish levels have vastly improved. The seats are well cushioned and there’s plenty of cabin space for its segment. It has enough space for 5 people with a large boot space. Safety features include ABS, dual front airbags, and front and rear fog lamps.
Considering that this is a diesel motor, there is very little clatter and vibration felt from the engine.
PERFORMANCE The 1.3 litre Quadrajet diesel engine puts out 90bhp of power at 4000 rpm and 200Nm of torque from 1750-3000 rpm, one of the most powerful in its segment. Considering that this is a diesel motor, there is very little clatter and vibration felt from the engine. The D90 is mated to a 5-speed gearbox which is easy to use. The

light and progressive clutch further makes city driving a relaxing affair. The initial acceleration is good, but more so only when the turbocharger kicks in. Given the road, it gets up to three-digit speeds fairly easily. There is a small power surge in the beginning, followed by a greater boost in performance after going past 2500rpm. Then you have more than enough push to get going. But the motor is bit of the rev-happy kind, as you need to keep it boiling in the higher revs to get the most out of it. Apart from re-tuning the engine, Tata has improved NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) levels and tweaked the suspension set-up as well. Though the suspension has been set stiffer to add to its sporty flair, it easily flattens out bumps without upsetting the passengers. The ride through our kind of mountain roads was quite good and the grip from the tyres was also impressive. The D90 though did exhibit a fair amount of body-roll when going fast around a bend. Even with the body kits, ground clearance still isn’t an issue on our roads. Tata claims a mileage of 21.12 kmpl, which we think is nearly achievable with a sober and relaxed drive. Though it definitely isn’t your racy 0-100kmph hatchback, it felt quite good to drive. It is a sporty hatchback that easily plays the role of a daily commuter as well.
vERDICT The Vista D90 has pushed the envelope to the next level by offering more power, better performance and louder aesthetic dynamics than most of its rivals.

The Vista D90 has pushed the envelope to the next level by offering more power, better performance and louder aesthetic dynamics than most of its rivals. Despite all the improvements, the Vista D90 still remains a great value-for-money car. It comes loaded to the gills at a price point much cheaper than its competitors, offering more space and power. With a very reasonable price tag for such a refined diesel motor, it’s a steal considering the additional assurance of Tata’s nationwide after-sales service facilities. Though the youth focused sports styling may not strike the right chords with the traditional older folks, it makes for a good family hatchback as well, while packing in a distinct adrenaline punch. The Tata Vista D90 is bound to give its competitors a run for their money.

INTERVIEW
Mr. Gurinder Singh, Country Manager, Tata Motors, Nepal & Bhutan
We speak to Mr. Gurinder Singh, Country Manager of Tata Motors for Nepal and Bhutan, to share more insight on the Tata Vista D90 in Nepal. AUTOLIFE: How is the current market response for the new Tata Vista D90? It has just been a fortnight since the launch. So it would be very early to give a verdict. However, we were expecting good response prior to the launch itself as we already had advance enquiries. So far, all the cars that we had got into Nepal have been either booked or delivered. In fact, I had to make an SOS call to our supply chain team for speedy replenishment of stock and some extra vehicles in the coming months.
MORE ON TATA VISTA D90... most of them actually sold for private use. Diesel cars have been our forte over the years and the acceptability and demand of our diesel powered cars is amongst the highest in the market. So the challenge rather has been to fulfill the customers’ ever growing demand for our diesel cars.
AUTOLIFE: Apart from the driving dynamics, what is your favorite thing about the Vista D90? Well, I really like to have good music playing whenever I am driving. So I really like the touchscreen Multimedia Stereo System in the Vista D90, which is very efficient and sounds great. It instantly connects to my paired iPhone over the Bluetooth and easily plays my favorite playlist. The intergrated controls on the steering wheel make driving all the more easier and hassle-free.
AUTOLIFE: The Tata Indica series of cars has always had a popular presence in the market. But how do you justify, to a consumer, for the preference of this diesel powered Tata Vista D90 over other petrol powered competitors in its segment? It may not be totally fair to compare petrol cars with diesel ones. But, if we have to pitch them, the Vista D90 excels in performance, first in class technologies and sporty looks. Being a diesel car, the Vista D90 introduces a host of benefits. Some of them being: • Saves Nrs. 24 per liter as diesel is cheaper than petrol. • Gives more mileage which is 21.12 kmpl as per ARAI. • Has more pulling power due to high torque of 200Nm. • Is more economical in the long run. • Is safer and more reliable.
AUTOLIFE: In contrast to the market in India, we are of the view that most automobile consumers in Nepal still prefer petrol powered cars over the ones with a diesel engine. So has it been a challenge for Tata to push sales of its diesel powered cars in the market? The share of diesel cars is fairly high in Nepal, with
AUTOLIFE: Do you expect the Vista D90 to break barriers and garner an increased fan following for diesel cars in the country? The Vista D90 is a radical step towards performance oriented diesel cars as it is powered by a specially tuned Quadrajet engine, with Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT)
www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal
technology. The engine is perfectly mated to a Euro-tech 2 gearbox that ensures 0-100 KMPH in just 15.5 seconds and a top speed of 158 KMPH. This will definitely strike a chord with customers who want both thrill and class in their car. Surely, the new Vista D90 will further consolidate our position in the hatch segment of Nepal. AUTOLIFE: Was the Vista D90, especially the topend ZX+ variant, designed with a specific target towards just young and enthusiastic driver, or to actually cater to drivers of all ages? The Vista D90 is designed for the thrill-seeking new-age dynamic customer. And, it’s our belief that thrill-seekers cannot be constrained to an age bracket. The car will truly fit into the trendy and fast-changing lifestyles of all customers who are looking for a car which is power-packed, has first-in-class technologies and sporty looks. AUTOLIFE: Tata Motors has really done a commendable job with the Vista D90. Can we expect for more of such sports oriented factory modifications in Tata’s current line-up of vehicles in the other segments? It has always been Tata Motors’ endeavor to match our products to the ever evolving aspirations of our customers. The Vista D90 is yet another product designed keeping them in focus. New products are being developed across our entire range and we will continue to excel to requirements of customers. You may also look forward to the launch of our premium Sports Utility Vehicle the Safari Storme in a month or so. AUTOLIFE June 15, 2013 37

Being held successively over the past three years, the KCM City Chase has now become a much anticipated local motoring event in our calendar. The KCM City Chase is a Car Treasure Hunt organized within Kathmandu by the Student Council of Kathmandu College of Management (KCM). This year’s City Chase was held on 25th May, 2013 and fittingly had the freshly unveiled Tata Vista D90 as its title sponsor. It was indeed good news for Tata vehicle owners as they were privileged to participate in the Vista D90 City Chase V4.0 for just Rs.500/-, unlike other participants who had to shell out Rs.2000/- for the registration fee.
“More than 80 participants with a variety of cars from different brands and segments were lined up at the starting point”
Having heard enough from my enthusiastic colleagues at AutoLife about their past experiences of the City Chase, I made sure that I didn’t miss it this time around. This being my first ever participation at the City Chase, I was very much pumped up to give it all in for the competition. Representing Team AutoLife, I had my friend Avinash Bansal handling the driver’s seat and myself playing the navigator for the day. More than 80 participants with a variety of cars from different brands and segments were lined up at the starting point in the premises of the Satdobato Swimming Complex. After the event briefing and official inaugural by Mr. Nawaraj Dhakal (AIG of Nepal Police), all the participants sequentially raced out to crack all the given clues in the fastest time possible. The competition involved a team of a driver and navigator in each car, competing with
38

other teams to find correct answers to a trail of clues. The team which reached all the locations, completed all the specified tasks and reached the finish line in the earliest time was going to be declared the winner. This time there were a set of 13 tasks to be completed and we had to decode the clues in our given booklet to find the location of the task. The task locations were well laid around the city with most being co-related to the sponsors of the event. The trail passed all around the valley from places like Gaushala, Kamalpokhari, Uttardhoka, Lazimpat, Tripureshwor, Kuleshwor, Sanepa, Gwarko to as far as Naikaap, and finally ending back at Satdobato. An array of interesting tasks were laid throughout the clue locations. The tasks ranged from making a clean round reverse drive through a track at the Sipradi workshop in Gaushala, guessing garment prices in malls, showing off hula-hoops skills while the other partner chopped onions at Bhumi restaurant, racing to the top of a 5 storied building, changing car tires, guessing Ice Cream flavours, taking a stint at paintball, naming vehicle accessories, three legged racing in the harsh sun, to finally test driving a Tata Vehicle at the finishing task point. As it was on our part to plan out the shortest and most efficient route, we did make quite a few mistakes in the excitement and tension of our first time participation. Finally after all the fun and extensive www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal
sweating around, we made it back to the end point with seven other vehicles having already completed their drive. However, the penalties still had to be taken into account and we were still a little positive about our results, as the winners would be declared at an after event party at the 8 degrees Bar, Jhamsikhel. Interestingly, an area in the venue was designated to Tata vehicles which allowed event attendees to test drive all the range of Tata vehicles available in Nepal from sedans, hatchbacks to SUVs. The test drive sessions were accompanied by the well-informed Tata representatives and every test driver was rewarded two complimentary movie tickets. We made sure that we had a go in all of them while the other participants progressively arrived. Unfortunately, when the results were announced later, it was disheartening to learn that we didn’t make it even to the top ten spots. But all in spirit of the game and fun, we outweighed the disappointments and applauded the winners. Neeraj Goyal and Gaurav Goyal finished first and were handed out two Dell Laptops. Abhijeet Jain and Pravesh Agrawal landed second, while Rishab Agrawal and Ankit Agrawal stood third. They were awarded a 2 days trip to Pokhara and Gift hampers of various Car Accessories respectively. The top ten participants received various gift hampers as well.
“this one of a kind event did pack a fun filled weekend with all the drama and exciting twists and turns.” However, this year as well, the event had its fair share of criticism with the calculation of results and questionable execution of the task and rules, leaving more than a hand full of participants disgruntled. But at the end of the day, this one of a kind event did pack a fun filled weekend with all the drama and exciting twists and turns. It was an adrenaline filled event for all the motor enthusiasts. The best thing about this event, apart from the competition, was the absolute fun while going about town to solve the clues using both driving sensibilities and mental skills. It’s sure another event done well by the City Chase team, but still marred with a list of inadequacies to tick off in the next chase! AUTOLIFE June 15, 2013 39

MARKET TALK
HATCHBACKS IN NEPAL 1) Should hatchback be the first choice for the Nepali Market? Nepal market is an emerging market. As we have seen the roads are slowly getting wider and road conditions are improving. I feel that hatchbacks greatly satisfies most road conditions and consumer needs in Nepal. It has an affordable price tag, good clearance, smaller dimensions and easy maneuverability. Thus, hatchback are a much more of a versatile car in context to the other segments. 2) How is the current hatchback sales and market ratio? Talking about the current scenario, Nepalese market has grown a lot during this year because of many reasons. New entrants have come in and more innovative products have joined the choice line of customers. This gives Suzuki an interesting competition where it gets to prove the customers its worth. Suzuki Being the market leader in Nepal has a long line up to provide customers for this segment. It has a total of 7 Models for the hatchback segment. We will also be coming up with new launches in the near future. Karan Chaudhary, Executive Director, Chaudhary Group
3) Your most selling vehicle in the hatchback segment? Alto is by far the highest selling Hatchback segment model we have.
1) Should hatchbacks be the first choice for the Nepali Market? There are a number of reasons for hatchbacks being the first choice of many Nepali buyers. First off, hatchbacks make more sense from the economic stand point as they are comparatively more affordable than sedans and SUVs. Also, considering the tight spaces the Nepali drivers have to overcome, the trouble is practically halved with the compact hatchbacks. Lastly, most of the time hatchbacks are the first choice for new drivers as it is much easier to maneuver through traffic. 2) How is the current hatchback sales and market ratio? The Hatchback segment is divided into 2 parts: A00 and A0. A00s have low cc engines and are smaller in size while A0 are comparatively larger and considered more luxurious amongst hatchbacks. In the past few months, I feel that the A0 is gaining more popularity in the market, which is a big deal as the hatchbacks make up of almost 70-80% of the current market scenario of automobiles in Nepal. 3) Your most selling vehicle in the hatchback segment? It has to be the Fabia.
Deepak Agrawal General Manager, Skoda M.A.W.
1) Should hatchback be the first choice for the Nepali Market? The basic reasons why people should go with hatchback are price and size. Because the hatchbacks are smaller, the cost is relatively lower and is perfect for narrow roads of Nepal. Also, the new generation is attracted to hatches, as it looks sporty. Moreover, all the world leading car markers are producing Hatchback in India so it’s also available in Nepal for a reasonable price. That’s gives an advantage to Nepalese buyers.
Sarik Bogati Business Development and Marketing Manager Pooja International Nepal Pvt Ltd (Authorized Volkswagen Importer for Nepal)
2) How is the current hatchback sales and market ratio? Hatchback is the highest selling car in Nepal and is expected to grow 40% in 2013. The very reason is the price and size. The second highest selling segment in Nepal is crossover. The reason is the road condition. VW has around 10% market share in this segment (only including third country imports). Sedans also sell well as it is the entry-level executive car of corporate people. However, premium sedan and Sports Utility vehicle segment is shrinking. The reason is the dollar price and economic crisis. 3) Your most selling vehicle in the hatchback segment? Volkswagen Polo is the market leaderwith around 25% market share. A new hatchback Up! is expected to come out in 2014.

fter a long hiatus, it was rally time once again for ANBUG (Association of Nepal Beetle User’s Group), with their vintage Volkswagen Bugs coming out of hibernation. ANBUG had organized a classic Volkswagen Beetle Rally drive to Jiri on May 29-31, 2013. The three day drive to Jiri was the perfect thing to do for commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the first ascent to the top of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Jiri was once popularly known as the 'Gateway to Everest', as the tough climb to Everest actually began from here before the airport at Lukla came into inception. Sometimes overlooked or ignored as a place of mountaineering significance in Nepal, this is the place where the first summiteers along with their crew had once camped. With abundant potential in mountaineering tourism, ANBUG organized the rally with the hope to highlight Jiri in this sector.
Jiri has a unique lifestyle and culture that undoubtedly stands out. Along with picturesque attractions and renowned cheese farms along the numerous trekking trails, ANBUG organized “Jaun Jiri” to promote domestic tourism in particular and hope to bring back the old vibes that once existed in this historical place. 17 classic Volkswagen Beetles with a total number of participants of about 50 individuals including men, women and children hit the road towards Jiri on May 29th, 2013. The 188km route to Jiri from Kathmandu took the Bugs through a variety of hilly roads from fine stretches to some bumpy and muddy path, cruising at altitudes as high as 2000m. After the flag off at Durbar Marg in Kathmandu, the route continued through Banepa, Balefi, Khadichaur, Charikot and finally ended at Jiri. On the way back, the team took a detour to the
sacred Hindu temple of Dolakha Bhimsen at Charikot and finally returned to Kathmandu. Only a few minor technical problems arose during the drive, which were easily solved by the technical back-up team that ANBUG maintains throughout all their drives and rallies. Also with most of the owners themselves well professed with the technical ideas of getting their Bugs back to life, help wasn’t difficult to find in this vintage pack. All along the way, the Bugs grabbed plenty of attention from residents and travellers alike in the Nepalese countryside. Overall, it was a great experience, as Subodh Das Shrestha from ANBUG fitting concludes, “Words cannot really explain the pure joy experience by us in driving our vintage Bugs to faraway places, and giving continuity to the tradition that is still religiously followed by thousands of Beetle Clubs all over the world.”
DID YOU KNOW? Who said these Bugs are not reliable or capable enough? One of ANBUG’s members, Mr.Kajun Piya actually made the entire journey up the tough terrains to Jomsom and back on his vintage Volkswagen Beetle. Without any technical back up team! A classic example of how far passion and technical expertise can get you. #Respect.

rom a simple contraption mainly developed for commuting, cycling has now carved a huge niche for itself in the world of adventure sports. Similarly, more enthusiastic Nepalese people have begun to embrace this new approach with an emerging cycling community comprising mostly of thrill seekers. And what better way than to promote and strengthen this passion right from the very beginning by educating the young enthusiasts from the grassroots level? With exactly this thought in mind, Epic Events Nepal in association with Lalitpur Cycling Association organized the “2nd Kathmandu Bike Festival 2013” on the 19th of May 2013 at the Gyanodaya Residential School in Khokana, Lalitpur. The first edition held last year had achieved an overwhelming level of success. Presented by The Himalayan Times with support from Gyanodaya International Residential School, Springwood, Chain Inc, International brand ‘Kali Protectives’ and AutoLife Magazine as the official media partner, the organizers took it to a whole new level this year. The main attractions of the events were the Springwood Inter School Cross Country Mountain Bike Race, Kali Dirt Jump Competition and F1 Race. The festival started off with the Inter School Cross

Country Mountain Bike Race hosted beautifully around the culturally vivid city of Khokana. The Cross Country Mountain Bike Race was held in two loops which covered a total distance of 7.10 km. A total of 12 schools from Kathmandu had participated in this competition. In the boy’s category for the event, Christopher Keeling from the British School secured first place with a time of 13 min 13 sec, while Bikson Ghale from Nirmal School (13 min 39 sec) and Yukesh Gurung (13 min 48 sec) from Little Step School, Pokhara bagged the second and third positions respectively. Altogether, seventy six students participated in the boy’s category. The girls were sweating it out for glory at the Cross Country Race as well. Saria Bajracharya from St. Xavier’s clinched the first place with a time of 9 min 01 sec followed closely by Prathana Shrestha (9 min 03 sec) from Gyanodaya Int’l Residential School and Yuma Lawanti with 11 min 56 secs. Eighteen participants in the girl’s category covered a distance of 3.5 KM in a single loop. The most highly anticipated attraction of this festival was the exhilarating Kali Dirt Jump Competition. Highly athletic in the air, those youngsters laid it all on the dirt-track with hair-triggering jumps. The crowd was cheering and rooting for the participants as they were going aeronautical on their bikes. Although a few spills were inescapable, the aerial tricks were thrilling the crowd. The high flying stunts of Sandeep Ale secured him first position while Samuel Ghising clinched the second position and Sumeet Rai grabbed the third position respectively. The crowds certainly loved this event the most. Likewise, Samuel Ghising won the F1 race with a time of 26.8 seconds, while Christopher Keeling grabbed the first prize in the school category. The F1 cycle track was built around the centre of the event premises. The winners were judged by a panel of Bo Percival, a Canadian International Cyclist along with Nepali Cyclists Shakar Yakthumba, Shyam Limbu and Umang Shrestha. The winners were awarded with cycling accessories, trophies and certificates. The other highlights of this event were B-Boying and BMX stunts which left the crowd enthralled. Similarly, there were stalls of various mountain bike and www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal

adventure gears targeted towards the mountain bike enthusiasts. A stall from Initiative Outdoors, a Nepal-based outdoor school with a focus on wilderness first aid, technical rescue and leadership/teamwork trainings, garnered appreciation from all the fronts. The crowds were also seen satisfying their hunger at the various food stalls. Interestingly, there was also a small zip line inside the festival premises for the thrill seekers. For the first time in Nepal, this event also had a door prize of a cool Commencal Ramones II mountain bike worth Nrs. 90,000 for one lucky winner. The lucky winner was Mr. Madhav Thapa from Chhauni who won the mountain bike through a lucky draw. It was great to see the budding talent of the youngsters participating in each of the events at the festival and this initiative by the organizers to encourage cycling through the grassroots level in Nepal truly deserves a round of applause. Seriously, with this level of enthusiasm from both the organizers and participants, the day isn’t very far when we will possibly have our own local cycling hero standing high in the international podiums. *AutoLife does not recommend executing motorcycle stunts without helmets. Never has there been a moment that I haven’t jumped in excitement whenever a bike ride is mentioned in front of my face. It has always been like that classic ‘Godfather’ kind-of-offer, which I can never refuse. So when I was invited to join like-minded riders on the 1st Annual Enfield & Vintage Rider’s Reunion, I just happily geared up and rumbled ahead, fittingly on my trusted Royal Enfield Classic 350cc. The 1st annual Enfield and Vintage Rider’s Reunion was a ride event set in the windy hills of Nagarkot and hosted by the Vintage Motorcycle Club, in association with Castrol, Minsk, General Petroleum, Kantipur Hotline, Rak Airways, Smoking Joe, Maya Nepal Rehabilitation Centre, Ryderz Of Bhaktapur, Piston Lounge & Bar and Hotel Funky Hill. AutoLife Magazine was the official magazine partner for the event and I was riding along to cover the event, highly confused whether this really was going to be work or pleasure.

Come 31st May, I found myself in the company of constantly rumbling and thundering motorcycles at the Piston Lounge and Bar in Soalteemode. After a complimentary breakfast at the lounge, we set off flaunting the official event T-Shirt, Stickers and Flags that read “Ride‘Em Don’t Hide‘Em”. Before riding off, each of us participants were given our time cards which would record our departure and arrival time, to be calculated later for determining the rally winner on the basis of the TSD (Time Speed Distance) format. After the official flag off by Mr. Rabi Thapa from Sacred Summits Pvt. Ltd, all of us sequentially hit the roads.
I happily geared up and rumbled ahead, fittingly on my trusted Royal Enfield Classic 350cc.
We rumbled down the six-lane Arniko Highway and gathered at the Taumadhi Square in Bhaktapur for our first pit-stop of the event. Hill. Upon arrival at the Hotel, we were provided with refreshments and the rooms were allocated to all the riders. Lunch quickly followed up and it was time for some rest. No sooner had I dozed off into a quick nap, I was immediately awake from the constant revving of motorcycles. It was the stunters from Ryderz of Bhaktapur, who were setting up the right mood in front of the hotel with their variety of motorcycle stunt performances. Enfielders did their part as well, with a couple of them burning their tyres on the tarmac into a thick layer of smoke. I couldn’t help but recall my younger days when I recklessly practiced stunts myself and crashed my bike a handful of times. Their performance left most participants amused and wanting for more. After the stunt show, a DJ session was in store for all the music lovers. I though personally like to kick back and chill with a bottle of beer, and that was what I did. But that was not the end. Later in the evening, a Live Band performed various Nepali and English numbers and every one tuned in to the groove. The evening soon ended in a good note and we called it a night. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal

as compared with its competitors. The triangular shaped console is divided into two separate panels. The upper panel houses a bright speedometer, turn indicator and a high beam signal lamp, while the lower deck showcases the fuel gauge. The console could have been a little more functional with an addition of a tripmeter and a tasteful digital panel. Below the instrumentation panel is a secure baghook flanked on both sides by two small storage cubbies. Right above the cubbies are the ignition switch pod and pulloperated choke knob which neatly astride in the front dash. The fuel tank can hold 5 litres of fuel when fully tanked up. And under the seat is a 15.5 litres of storage area, ample enough for a half-face helmet. Though similar to its main competitor Honda Dio from some angles, this newage design maintains a pleasing identity of
its own.
Engine and Performance: The Ray is powered by a two-valve, 4-stroke, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine. Ignition is either by an electric switch or a kick-starter. The BS type carburettor has a throttle position sensor (TPS) with a CVT transmission system. The 113 cc motor produces 7.1 bhp of power at 7500 rpm, and a maximum torque of 8.1Nm at 5000 rpm. The engine is at par with the others in the segment. Once you ignite it on, the engine comes to life and with a slight twist of throttle, the Yamaha testosterone kicks in. The engine exhibits slower response in low revs but, once you start accelerating, the power delivery becomes more agile. But the acceleration is not so dominant

in higher revs post 60 kph. It’s very easy and comfortable to ride this scooter in the lower speed and rpm range. Yamaha has maintained the power development level at an optimum level to ease drivability and manoeuvrability at urban settings. This should inject more confidence in beginners and young female riders. The saddle height is lower than other scooters and the seating position is sportier. It will aid the shorter riders to put their foot on ground during emergency braking and halts. Ray is equally comfortable with medium-built people as well. However, tall riders may get cramped up due to the compact leg shield. The seating is quite comfortable for the tandem riders as well with retractable and ample foot-pegs. The telescopic front fork suspension and

the rear unit swing suspension ensure agile handling at both smooth tarmacs and rough roads. It has a bigger suspension stroke. The ride quality was good with secure handling and safe and adequate braking, thanks to the 130mm drum brakes at both the ends. It was quite easy to weave through heavy city-traffic with the suspension soaking up bumpy roads pretty well. The uniform weight distribution paired with compact leg shield and broad footboard installs confidence in riders during cornering also. Since we had the Yamaha Ray for a couple of days in our garage, we sneaked the Ray into the streets at nights as well and to our pleasure, the 12V halogen bulb emitted ample amount of light to ease our vision. On the economy side, the Ray claims to deliver a mileage of around 40-45 kmpl, which is actually quite good.

Now, other manufacturers will definitely have to sweat it out with Yamaha, for market share in the popular scooter segment. The Verdict: Yamaha India’s first attempt into the scooter segment offers a complete package with its refined, reliable and lighter engine targeted towards the urban sector. The Ray is a fun scooter to ride with a brilliant ride quality and stylish design. Although it has been positioned as a “ladies’ scooter”, it should appeal to the ‘alpha-male’ category as well. Now, other manufacturers will definitely have to sweat it out with Yamaha, for market share in the popular scooter segment. Priced at Rs. 158900/-, it provides an excellent value-for-money with Yamaha’s strong brand credibility to boot.

Let’s admit it. Most of us motor heads don’t really qualify as an avid bookworm. We are probably the last people who will enthusiastically bury ourselves into books. Relax, we are not telling you to start flipping through Harry Potter, Sidney Sheldon, The Da Vinci Code or Fifty Shades of Grey. What if you could actually
WHAT IF I HAD NEVER TRIED IT: VALENTINO ROSSI Arguably the world’s all-time greatest motorcycle road racing champion, Valentino Rossi is without a doubt the best and the most loved motorcycle racer. In What If I Had Never Tried It, he tells his remarkable story for the first time. And as might be expected, the story he tells is fast-paced, full of surprises, action-packed and entertaining. Here he relates how he started racing as a teenager, first with karts and minimotos. He then traces his rapid and seemingly inexorable progress - from the 125 class to the 250 class and to the 500s. Then finally on to the 990cc four-stroke era, now known as MotoGP, to become a seven-time World Champion in Grand Prix racing by the time he was twentysix. As he describes starting his career as a clownish upstart, only to emerge as “The Doctor” so famed for his precision, Rossi’s crowdpleasing character comes through in abundance. One moment a charismatic jokester, the next an insightful analyst, he is finally the single-minded, focused, strategic racer with split-second skills the rest of us can only dream of, giving us a glimpse of how one man has forever changed the face of motorcycle racing.
HELL’S ANGEL Narrated by the visionary founding member, Hell’s Angel provides a fascinating all-access pass to the secret world of the notorious Hell’s Angels Motorcycle Club. Sonny Barger recounts the birth of the original Oakland Hell’s Angels and the four turbulent decades that followed. Hell’s Angel also chronicles the way the HAMC revolutionized the look of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle and built what has become a worldwide bikeriding fraternity, a beacon for freedom-seekers the world over. Dozens of photos, including many from private collections and from noted photographers, provide visual documentation to this extraordinary tale. Never simply a story about motorcycles, colorful characters, and highspeed thrills, Hell’s Angel is the ultimate outlaw’s tale of loyalty and betrayal, subcultures and brotherhood, and the real price of freedom.

MOTORWORLD In Motorworld, the notorious Jeremy Clarkson invites you to his take on different cultures and the cars that they drive. There are ways and means of getting about that don’t involve four wheels, but in this slice of vintage Clarkson, Jeremy isn’t much interested in them. Back in 1996, he took himself off to twelve countries (okay, eleven - he goes to America twice) in search of the hows, whys and wherefores of different nationalities and their relationships with cars. There were a few questions he needed answers to. Why, for instance, is it that Italians are more interested in looking good than looking where they are going? Why do Indians crash a lot? How can an Arab describe himself as ‘not a rich man’ with four of the world’s most expensive cars in his drive? And why have the otherwise neutral Swiss declared war on the car? From Cuba to Iceland, Australia to Vietnam, Japan to Texas, Jeremy Clarkson tells us of his adventures on and off four wheels as he seeks to discover just what it is that makes our motorworld tick over.
SENNA VERSUS PROST This is the story of the most deadly rivalry in Formula One. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Formula One was at its most explosive, with thrilling races, charismatic drivers, and nailbiting climaxes. Alain Prost was France’s only F1 world champion, an intelligent, smooth driver with the epithet “Le Professeur”. On the contrary, Ayrton Senna was the mercurial kid from a privileged background in Sao Paolo who was the most intense and ruthless racing driver the world has ever seen. As the great rivals raced to victory, their relationship deteriorated badly. But the final, sad act of this drama happened at the San Marino Grand prix at Imola in May 1994, where Senna was killed. Insights from Martin Brundle, Damon Hill, Sir Frank Williams, Bernie Ecclestone, Derek Warrick, Johnny Herbert, Gerhard Berger, plus McLaren insiders and other F1 figures provide a breathtaking account of one of the all-time classic sporting rivalries. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal

SINCE Since the production of the first Model A Fordmobile back in 1903, the Ford Motor Company has come a long way. Today, with about 175,000 employees and 65 plants worldwide, Ford is the world’s second-largest automaker and among the most influential automotive brands in history. Ford’s vehicle productions have now grossed well over 350 million units worldwide. So in our tribute to their 110th anniversary and 150th birthday of their founder Henry Ford, here is a brief take on their rich history which helped define this legendary American marquee. Ford Motor Company (or simply Ford) entered the business world on June 16, 1903, when Henry Ford and 11 other business associates signed the company’s articles of incorporation with $28,000 in cash. As with most great enterprises, Ford Motor Company’s beginnings were modest. The company made its first sale

only approximately one month after incorporation. It was the Model T which was introduced on October 1, 1908 that changed the fortune of Ford. Henry Ford had realised his dream of producing an automobile that was reasonably priced, reliable, and efficient with the introduction of the Model T. The $825, four-cylinder engine produced 20 bhp of power and had a top speed of about 45 miles per hour. This vehicle signalled a new era in personal transport – it was easy to operate, maintain and handle on rough roads and was an immediate success. During that time, over 15,000,000 units of Model T’s were built and sold which made it world’s first and successful mass-produced vehicle. During the early manufacturing years, building automobile was a slow and complex process. Henry Ford had to find a way to speed up the production process. Since the Model T’s were selling like
hot-cakes, Henry Ford designed his first moving assembly line in 1913, and not only revolutionised the manufacturing processes of his Ford Model T, but later changed the world of automobiles forever. This assembly line went on to become the benchmark for mass production methods around the world. Then in 1922, Ford entered the luxury car segment with the acquisition of the Lincoln Motor Company, named after Abraham Lincoln whom Henry Ford admired. And in 1939, the Mercury division was created to establish a division centred on mid-priced cars. Ford Motor Company was growing. Even the Great Depression could not shake the Ford Company as badly as other car makers. Ford Motor was one of the few big American corporations to survive the economic depression, although the plummeting automotive sales led the company to scale down its operations and lay off many workers. With the introduction of the Falcon model in 1960 and the Mustang in 1964, Ford continued to boost its reputation. The popular Mustang was an impressive sports car with an aggressive bold front, signature curves, kicked-up haunches and a serious attitude that managed to win the hearts of millions. It was the most successful model since the Model T and Model A.

“Ford’s innovations have also taken the centre-stage. Their innovations have pushed the boundaries of what a vehicle can do.” The Mustang joined Ford’s One-Millionth club on April 17, 2013. The company’s next major step was represented by the formation of Ford Europe division in 1967. The third generation Fiesta launched in Europe established itself as the fastest selling generation of Fiesta to date - 1 million units in less than two years. In 1981, Ford engineers developed North America’s first hybrid. Since then, they have developed vehicles that would run on compressed natural gas, propane, electricity and ethanol-fuelled vehicles. The year 2005 became a historic year for Ford when they introduced the world’s first hybrid-electric SUV- the Escape Hybrid. This has made Ford the leaders of alternative fuel technology because more than 80 percent of the alternative fuel vehicles sold in the world are Fords. However, following major sales losses in the 2000’s, Ford was pinned against the wall by debts and the imminence of closing down. Preferring to make it back on its own, Ford then mortgaged all of its assets in 2006. As of then, the company has released a variety of new models both under the Ford brand name and the rest of the sub-brands it owns such as fresher and edgier Mercuries and flashier Lincolns.
boundaries of what a vehicle can do. The Terrain Management System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Trailer Sway Control, Torque Vectoring Control, Inflatable Rear Safety Belts, Regenerative Braking System and Cross-Traffic Alert are some of the important features that come fitted with Ford Vehicles. Lately, Ford has developed a revolutionary voice-activated technology system dubbed as ‘Ford SYNC’. Similarly, they have also achieved glory in motorsports. They have enjoyed success in stock car racing, formula one, rally, touring, sports car championship and the Indy 500. The Ford GT40 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four consecutive times, from 1966 to 1969, competing with cars from the likes of Ferrari and Porsche.
Today, the oval Ford logo is one of the three most recognised logos in the world. Well after 110 years today, Ford Motor Company is still transforming the auto industry around the globe. Ford is now revolutionising the auto industry globally with models that continually set the benchmark in their segment, such as the most popular truck in the world - the F-Series, one of the best-selling SUVs in the world - the Ford Escape/Kuga and 2012’s best-selling car in the world - the all-new Ford Focus. To commemorate Ford’s 110th anniversary this year, Ford distributors around the globe are celebrating a special ‘Ford Heritage Month’ throughout the
As with most great enterprises, Ford’s innovations have also taken the centrestage. Their innovations have pushed the month of June. Similarly, GO Ford - the authorized distributor for Ford vehicles in Nepal, has done their part as well to transform their showroom and service station into a Ford history exhibition space, where customers can revisit the early days of Ford Motor Company and learn more about how Henry Ford, a single man with a vision, built a global car company that opened the highways and the world to all mankind.

ROADTRIP
T
This story dates back to more than a year ago. The alarm starts buzzing at 5am in the morning. It was the first sound to mark the beginning of what would be a mad solo ride back to Kathmandu, after a heavily inspiring ride around the Eastern hills of Nepal. But I decide to extend my sleep, as I was still withering in pain from the previous day’s extensive ride around Dharan and beyond, to places like Dhankuta, Hile, Basantapur, etc . Little did I know that it was only a prelude to what was about to come. After a heavy brunch lovingly prepared by my grandmother, I started off from Biratnagar. I was returning to Kathmandu today. Sadly my faulty DSLR had broken down yet again. Hence, the pictures you see here are actually from my recent ride to the same place.

WORDS & PHOTOS: Aashish Niroula I left Birtanagar at 1pm, and my target to reach Kathmandu by 10pm was already looking bleak. After passing through sun-flower plantations at Inaruwa, I soon reached Koshi Barrage and it was a relief to pass through the region with cool breeze blowing in occasionally. According to the Mahabharat, the God of death took the form of a woman and resides on the banks of the Koshi River to keep the growth of human population under check. I made sure that I didn’t help the God reduce the count and safely passed through. Next stop was at the popular Peda Bazaar, a stretch of highway road renowned for the shops that sell delicious Pedas, a popular local sweet. I bought a boxful of the sweetmeats from the 'Budo Babaji's Peda Bhandar' and filled myself with a meal of rice and fish curry. Already exhausted from the ride, I laid myself on a bed nearby and took a quick power nap. I woke up, only to realize that I had overslept. So I quick fired the engine again and rode non-stop till Bardibas. I had heard about the road to Kathmandu being shorter from Bardibas, if the detour to Sindhuli was taken. A few

enquiries were made and though I wasn’t really recommended the route, I decided to try this new stretch of road that was still being constructed at a few sections. And this decision later didn’t really turn out to be one of my best judgements. Maybe I should have just listened to the locals… Gliding through the smooth curvy road towards Sindhuli, surrounded by the jungles glowing in the sunset, and seduced by the thrill to explore the unknown, I zipped ahead; new roads always fills me with the energy to endure the journey ahead. The road quality was probably the best I had ever ridden and it left me wondering why the locals still insisted on taking a different route. But soon, I wandered off a bridge and found myself riding towards the river. It didn’t take long to realize that I was lost, with the river track leading nowhere in the darkness. With continuous failed attempts to retrace my way back from the sand to the road, I was getting frustrated and nervous. Then luckily, I heard some temple bells ring nearby. I took the stairs to the isolated temple, and nearly like in a Bollywood flick, sought for salvation from the temple priest. Fair enough, he showed me the right way that would lead me to Sindhulimadi. It was already twilight and my fun journey was
now turning out to be a scary one. The path led through a very thick and slushy forest in the pitch dark. To add to my horror, my bike lost its rear brakes and manoeuvring the motorcycle not really being sure of where I was going was becoming more frightening. Somehow, I managed to reach Sindhulimadi by 8pm. Then it began to drizzle. Challenges galore, I still kept pressing hard. The ascent to Sindhuli Gadhi started and it was fun to be back on good quality roads ripping through the corners again. I could imagine how fun
it would have been to ride this sweeping road in daytime with more visibility to boot. The road was filled with plenty of curves and kept snaking through for the next 25kms or so. And suddenly, there was no road at all! Barred with bamboo sticks it was land’s end and there was a 90° vertical fall into the river. Back in Sindhuli, an old lady had informed me of a tough stretch of off-road ahead and advised me to take the left turn just before the awesome snaky road would end. So I

retraced my route and did as advised. But instead of heading towards Khurkot, I had again wandered somewhere else. I seemed alone in the wilderness and as I looked further towards the dark horizon, I could see several hills criss-crossing each other and there was not a single light in any one of them. Though I loved the amalgamation of fear, thrill with joy and serenity, a cold chill ran down the spine and shook my whole body. Nevertheless, with no other option, I continued through the tough, rocky and dusty road heading uphill. At one point, the bike got stuck and I had a fall. My feet were sunken on nearly one feet of loose red mud and pushing the bike out of trouble wasn’t just working out. After several tries, I finally managed to set the bike free from the rut.
steered back and found the right way. By the time I reached Nepalthok it was already 2.30am in the morning and I had provoked at least a dozen people from their sleep, some in the cowshed and some in their homes. I later learned that the mountain I had wandered into was popularly known as ‘Nangey Danda’ (Naked Mountain) and many travellers would regularly get lost in this mountain due to a missing signboard. I was relieved that the ordeal was over. But alas, the Gods still had more in store. As I continued towards Kathmandu
“My feet were sunken on nearly one feet of loose red mud and pushing the bike out of trouble wasn’t just working out.”
As I was approaching the top of the hill, I kept praying if I could come across any living soul. It was already past midnight and I could only spot around 5 to 6 houses near the roadside with the limited visibility of my motorcycle’s light. As I was about to approache one of the houses, the most bizarre of all things happened in front of the cowshed, where I witnessed what seemed like a 'paranormal experience.' I immediately ran back through the barren fields, onto my bike and revved away as fast as I could. After gaining some distance, I knocked at one of the houses and asked an elderly man for direction. Pitying me, he offered food and asked me to stay. Somewhat suspicious, I decided to deny the offer and move ahead. Apparently, I had missed a signboard and wandered 15kms off to this mountain. I

from Nepalthok, it started raining cats and dogs. I could not put on my black visor due to the dark visibility, and the spattering ran further blinded my limited vision. After bearing through some more torture, I finally reached home at around 5am in the morning. I had never ever felt so much relief before. Obviously, I had faced some problem or the other when taking on an adventure. But this one was truly unusual and memorable with a plethora of challenges like heavy rainfall, curvy roads, misty mountains, unknown rough roads and lonely extended riding hours on crazy terrain. This ride was a complete test of my patience, endurance level and riding skills. Of course, I learned my lesson the hard way. Never travel alone through an unknown route in the dark‌

Sure, a full suspension ride sounds nice but if you are going to ride it around the city, you're not doing the bike justice.
Sure, a full suspension ride really sounds nice. But if you are going to ride it around the city, you’re not really doing the bike enough justice to its worthy calibre. Frankly, isn’t that what some of us really end up doing with our mountain bikes? Nevertheless, this still hasn’t stopped most well off novice riders to go ahead and buy the highest calibre dual suspension mountain bikes at perspiration inducing price tags. So personally, I think it would be a better act of judgment to start off on a more down to earth, entry level hard tail. Hard tails are the real deal - rough, unforgiving and thus a reputed teacher to break in a new rider. Furthermore, if you are not going to be doing too much off road riding, the entry level hard tails are the safest bet. And all of this does not mean compromising on the bike. So, in between these opinions, how does the new Trek 4300 really fare? www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal

The Chassis The 2014 Trek 4300 Four Series is the latest of its kind to hit the market worldwide, and it is not short on options. It offers the sizes of 13.5, 15.5, 17.5, 18.5, 19.5 and 21.5 inch frames. The frame is Alpha Gold Aluminium with semi-integrated head tube which features internal cups. If you can’t bear the conventional headsets with exposed cups and bearings, this is the look for you. And to maintain the sleek and tidy look, it has internal front derailleur cable routing and a replaceable derailleur hanger. Inevitably at this price, the geometry is neutral and casually sporty rather than race influenced. The SR Suntour XCM w/30mm stanchions coil springs provides a plush 100mm of travel, with preload adjustments at the top of the legs - useful if you’re heavy, or if most of your riding is on the road.
The Ride
The 4300 Trek 2014 is the newest entrant to the market worldwide and it is quite a delight to see it in our very own country.
Targeted at the beginner riders, the bike is built quite beginner friendly. The Shimano shifter has upgraded from the previous 8-speed to the new Shimano Acera 9-speed, which perform without fault with the gear mechanism. And with a tall seat post, the 17.5 inch frame was about right for riders just over 6ft (since other sizes were not available at that very moment). The rest of the bike has a lot of Bontrager tagged finishing including the seats, seatpost and handle bars which is a 9 degree sweep 15mm low riser. The Bontrager XR2 26x2.2 tires performed well both on the streets as well as the dirt. This makes great sense for a city going through an overhaul, as the roads are now difficult to distinguish between rubble and tarmac. Also, since the suspension could be set to stiff for the street and uphill climbs and changed accordingly for rougher terrains, it was a joy to ride. Hayes Shimano BR-M395 hydraulic disc brakes will stop you in your track, which implies they work perfectly well. However, like on any other bike, the discs will give in to the monsoon rains, so it is best to avoid cycling in the rain. Overall, the ride was smooth as butter, on the street as well as on the dirt.

The Verdict Currently, in the Nepali market, there are a lot of similar bikes in this range and genre. In fact, there are quite a few similar numbered models from Trek itself, which would be difficult to differentiate to the untrained eye. But this 2014 Trek 4300 Four Series is the newest entrant to the market worldwide and it is quite a delight to see the latest variant in our very own country. It is definitely a good choice for an entry level bike as it gives you one of the highest quality and performance in a hard tail at a reasonable price range. Furthermore, Trek has quite the goodwill amongst mid range entry level bike enthusiasts, making it a dependable name. At a price tag around the Rs.60000 territory, this bike is a good choice for the beginner biker. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal

ESSENTIAL MONSOON CARE TIPS FOR YOUR CYCLE
Words Yonten Yonjan As told by: Santosh Rai
M
onsoon care for your bike is as important as you take care of yourself. You don’t really want your bike and yourself to fall sick at the same damn time! Do you? With Kathmandu developing deep waterways on the road itself every monsoon, the best way to actually save your bike is to simply ride it after monsoons end. Okay, this might be applicable only to those few who ride their bicycle as a secondary mean of transportation. But what about those who solely depend on bicycles to commute around town? Well, if you have to ride, pampering your bicycle a little more during this time of the year will definitely help prevent the unnecessary cash flow from your wallet and ensure that you keep pedalling that extra mile.
TOOLS REQUIRED • Cleaning Brush and a Toothbrush, A Clean Cloth • Lubricant Oil (Finish Line, available at any leading cycle store)
THE MOST ESSENTIAL CARE AREAS: • Front/Back Derailleur • Crank, Chain, Sprocket • Rear/Front Suspensions Seals
STEP 1
STEP 4
Flip your bike over so you can have access to the parts you are cleaning.
Next comes the crank. Take a brush and place it over, under and in between narrow gaps to clean it. Again you must keep the pedal moving so that every surface of the crank is spotless.
STEP 2 First take a brush with a large surface area and strong bristles. Then put it over the sprocket and push the pedal. As the sprocket spins, dirt/ grime/mud will fall off the sprocket.
STEP 3 Now move on to the derailleur. Since the derailleur is smaller, clean it with the help of a tooth brush. You must simultaneously keep the pedal moving.
78
AUTOLIFE June 15, 2013
STEP 5 Now take a clean cloth on your hand, hold the chain and work the pedal back and forth until the chain is shiny and spotless.
STEP 6 Brush off dirt from the suspension and its seal. Also put oil on a clean cloth and clean both the rear and front suspension.
