Editorial the amazing issue
E
very passing month we seem to mark a milestone in our list of achievements. Ok, we are not blowing our own trumpets again! But there is really very little we can do to not boast about it when we have genuinely earned the bragging rights to do the same. Let us come to the point. This month marks another prized achievement for us. We will now have reputed automobile magazine BBC TopGear India’s editor Girish Karkera writing a regular monthly column for us! Considering that these guys are a mega inspiration for us, it’s definitely no small thing for us at AutoLife. Coincidentally, continuing with the flow of our amazingly motivated mood, we had the segment defining Honda Amaze getting launched in Nepal. Finally, most of you out there get to own that Honda badged car you have been dreaming about for ages, with the reasonable price tag. Not that the current petrol variant of the Honda Amaze isn’t great, but with petrol prices increasing by the day, more Nepalese have now begin to prefer diesel engines as well. So we think, introducing the more powerful and efficient flagship diesel variant of the Honda Amaze should also be the right thing to do for the authorized distributor here in Nepal. This will surely make other rivals sit up and scratch their heads. Then there’s another test drive report of the new Hyundai ‘i-gen’ i20. It’s the latest Hyundai vehicle to have undergone the widely accepted ‘fluidic’ treatment with some more level of refinements. This new variant of the popular premium hatchback is definitely bound to amaze with its segment topping list of high-end features. There were some more new amazing launches as well that arrived a bit late to make it to this issue’s review. Read some about the new Ducati Hypermotard 821, Suzuki Inazuma GW250 and 2013 Suzuki Wagon R, before we hopefully review them in the next issue. Rounding off this issue are other amazing encounters such as catching up with a group of overland tourers from Thailand, witnessing rare and functional vintage vehicles at the Ford Heritage Month Finale, learning about our local cyclists all set to try out their skills at international grounds, meeting up with probably the only Nepalese Automotive Designer student, discovering about Giacomo Agostini’s crazy achievements, riding to Kalinchowk in pursuit of snow and some more. Go ahead, read through as the rains pours hard outside and make sure you don’t get this issue wet. By the way, talking about monsoons, we have also compiled some advices for driving and riding safely in the monsoons...

FIGO WINS ANOTHER AWARD Ford Figo has been rated as India’s most dependable premium compact vehicle leaving behind vehicles like Maruti Suzuki Ritz, Hyundai i20 and surpassing the industry average score of 270. The study ranks vehicles from across segments for dependability based on an extensive research encompassing 169 factors. The study, now in its sixth year, measures dependability based on the number of problems reported per 100 vehicles, with a lower score reflecting higher long-term vehicle quality. Widely acclaimed as one of the best offerings in its segment, known for its best-inclass quality features and value for money, Ford Figo has also found a place in the prestigious Limca Book of Records 2012 as the most awarded car in India in its debut year. Exported to 37 international markets, Ford Figo has established India as one of Ford’s preferred locations for a world-class manufacturing centre. The Ford Figo offers a substantial package with its best in class space, AC and first in segment Bluetooth connectivity.
SKODA CARS RANKED BEST A recent survey by JD Power has revealed that two models of Skoda namely Skoda Superb and Skoda Yeti topped the list of best cars to own in 2013. Volkswagen-owned manufacturer Skoda took the top two spots, scoring 83% and 82.8% for its Superb and Yeti models respectively. Jaguar continues its recent comeback, winning a score of 82.7% for the new XF range. The Citroën DS3 and Lexus RX round off the top five, both scoring 82.2%. REFRESHED 2013 HONDA CBR250R
KTM 390 DUKE UNLEASHED
Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India has refreshed the 2013 CBR250R range with 4 new paint schemes including the iconic Repsol racing livery. However, the updates are only just cosmetic. The engine is the same 25bhp DOHC 249cc single cylinder unit. The new CBR250R is now available in 4 new colours – Sports Red, Black, Pearl Sunbeam White and the hottest – the iconic Repsol racing livery that also adorns Honda’s MotoGP bikes. The Repsol edition will only be available in a C-ABS (Combined Anti-Lock Braking System) variant and will be only available till October in India. Other standout features on the new CBR250R’s include blacked-out alloys and exhaust heat shield. The Repsol edition, however, gets orange alloys. The Repsol replica has a steeper price tag of IC 1.92 lakh (exshowroom) while the other variants cost IC 1.57 and 1.86 lakh respectively for the standard and C-ABS versions.
The wait is now over. The phenomenal KTM 390 Duke has been finally launched in India at a mouth-watering price of just IC 1.8 lakhs. The bigger Duke shares almost everything except the powerplant from its younger sibling, the 200 Duke. The 375 cc, fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine makes a whopping 45 bhp of power and 35 Nm of torque. This power output combined with a featherweight of just 145 kg will deliver some serious performance. The aggressive looking 390 also hosts premium features like ABS, Metzeler tyres at both ends, aluminium swing arm and aluminium alloy wheels, making it ideal for both racing and city/highway rides. It is also equipped with illuminated switchgears, dimpled palm grips and a comfortable set of levers and good mirrors. At IC 1.8 lakhs, the 390 Duke is significantly cheaper than the Kawasaki Ninja 300 and almost on par with Honda CBR250R.
LIMITED EDITION SWIFT RS Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has launched a limited-edition sports edition of its highest-selling successful hatchback. The Swift RS (RS for Rally Sport) enhancement package comes for two variants — the VXi (petrol) and the VDi (diesel). The Swift RS exteriors gets a 3-piece body kit that includes front and rear bumper inserts, roof spoiler, black and blue rally-sport inspired body decals, black wheel covers, blue paint finish for the wing mirrors and illuminated Swift nameplate on the door sills. The interior upholstery is crafted in art leather with signature black and blue combination, RS branded floor mats and a top-of-the-line stereo system with a CD player, AUX-in, USB and Bluetooth facility. However, under the hood is the same unchanged 1.2 litre K-Series petrol engine and the 1.3 litre Fiat Multijet fixed geometry turbo diesel engine. The Swift RS VXi is priced at IC 5.21 lakhs, while the Swift RS VDi is priced at IC 6.40 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi).
NEW NISSAN MICRA LAUNCHED Nissan India has launched a face lifted and a low-end version of its top-selling hatchback Micra. The face lifted Micra will be available in two variants: Petrol and Diesel. The 1.2-litre petrol engine comes with a refreshed CVT automatic gearbox mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and is expected to deliver a power of 68 bhp at 5000 rpm and a torque of 104 Nm at 4000 rpm. Similarly, the other variant gets a 1.5 litre diesel motor. The new Micra’s spacious interiors are supplemented with redesigned sporty exteriors. The car gets an aggressive stance with new headlamps and bigger grilles. A set of LED tail lamps, a new rear bumper and new alloy wheels has further accommodated the exterior. Features like keyless entry and go, climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, USB and aux-in ports and a reversing camera has also been added. The 2013 Micra Petrol comes in three trims, while the diesel is available in four trims. Similarly, Nissan has also launched a low-end variant of the Micra called the Micra Active. The Micra Petrol is priced between IC 4.8 lakh - 6.4 lakh while the diesel variant cost between IC 5.9 lakh – 7.1 lakh.

The sedan gets a three-slat chrome grille, a revised bumper with a smaller air intake and long, angular headlights that incorporate a row of LED daytime running lights. It also borrows some of the styling cues from the Corolla Furia Concept particularly the angular new framing of the front bumper and lower grille. Though the price and engine specs have not been revealed yet, however, the European version is expected to provide an engine choice of a 1.3-liter petrol, a 1.6-liter petrol or a 1.4-liter diesel engine.

The CRF125F is powered by an SOHC 124cc aircooled engine that churns out a power of 8.97bhp at 7000rpm and a torque of 10.2Nm at 4500rpm. The low-maintenance air-cooled engine has a strong bottom-end torque, manual four-speed gearbox and a super-tough rolling chassis with upgraded suspensions. It has CRF450R-inspired bodywork and styling. The CRF125Fs will be available in traditional Honda red color with a price of $2799 for the CRF125F and $3199 for CRF125F Big Wheel.

asia to the
rescue
“With so much action in Asia, it is not surprising that even traditional British car makers like Bentley and Jaguar are modelling their cars to the likes of its new consumers” Let me start with a confession. I was very surprised to know that Nepal had an automotive magazine. Though our line of work gives us the good fortune of travelling all over the world, I have never visited Nepal and only seen pictures and video footage on television or the odd Bollywood movie. But my surprise was quickly overtaken by a realisation that the love for cars and bikes is in fact a universal phenomenon, not restricted by geography. True that some countries are a bit advanced in their love quest with automobiles but it exists, nevertheless. The discovery of fossil fuel and the birth of the Internal Combustion engine was mostly a European phenomenon. They also made the most of a war-ravaged world with engineering feats for military. While I strongly condemn war of any sort, the whole military interest during WW II helped a lot of engineering stream in the years to follow with new age technology. Automobiles being one of the beneficiaries. And while the western world prospered, they only got a head start here. Manufacturers were happy building cars for their own countries and selling them. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal
Now, the world is in turmoil again. This time it’s been ravaged by a financial mess. Automobile companies have been bearing the brunt. Sales of many companies have dropped to abysmal levels. It’s actually scary out there. But of course, all is not lost because the ‘developed’ nations now have the ‘developing’ nations to look up to. When General Motors was an American company and world’s No.1 automotive company, it bought a small time Korean firm called Daewoo. Much criticism followed as to why invest on such a small firm that’s going nowhere? But when GM almost went under, it was Daewoobased models – sold under the Chevrolet badge in Asia and Europe that kept them afloat. But when even that started falling apart, it was fresh Chinese investment that’s rescuing them. China alone seems to be singlehandedly rescuing a lot of car companies and driving sales numbers. Swedish car maker Volvo was one such beneficiary having been bought over by Zhejiang Geely in 2010. More recently, Peugeot has been a benefactor too. The French car maker, historically, was always serious about Europe. When sales
plummeted a few years back following a weak economy, it started looking elsewhere. Although they came late to the party, it made a clever decision to invest in China and when reports last came in, it was already gaining a foothold in the market. Meanwhile in India, Suzuki has seen great success. In fact, Maruti Suzuki is today bigger than what Suzuki is back home. Right now, India is also the hotbed for a lot of other car makers like Renault and Nissan who are looking at making up for losses at their home turf through returns from Asia. In fact by the time this issue is out on stands, the world will see the rebirth of the Japanese brand Datsun. Not surprisingly, the ‘world launch’ is in India. With so much action in Asia, it is not surprising that even traditional British car makers like Bentley and Jaguar are modelling their cars to the likes of its new consumers. Not far then when Asia will call the shots of the automotive world. We are playing catch up to the western world, but we are getting there fast.

NIC ASIA
AUTO LOAN with mr. sunil pokhrel head of retail banking nic asia bank
N
IC Asia Bank recently created history in the Nepalese financial landscape by forming through a first of its kind merger between two commercial banks that had been operating successfully in the country. The Bank had been formed through the merger of NIC Bank and Bank of Asia Nepal on 30th June, 2013. NIC Asia Bank is now one of the largest private sector commercial banks in the country in terms of capital base, balance-sheet size, number of branches, ATM network and customer base. The Bank has 53 branches at present, which will be expanded to 66 branches within July 2014 with the relocation of 13 branches, which were merged together during the merger process. for new auto loan customers, especially after the merger? SP: We shall offer a competitive package to our potential Auto Loan customers. We plan to introduce new and innovative products and scheme which will be attractive to existing as well as new auto buying customers. AL: Are there any benefit plans for existing Auto loan customers of the previous NIC and Bank of Asia? SP: Definitely, we have thought of it and are planning to come out with some exclusive offers to our existing Auto Loan clients. We care for our existing customers and are dedicated to provide special services to both existing and potential customers. We shall shortly be introducing attractive schemes targeting the upcoming festive season for our existing clients. AL: Can you tell us in brief about the “Pre-approved Auto Loan”? SP: “Pre-approved Auto Loan” is similar to a regular Auto Loan scheme where all customer segments are eligible based on their repayment capacity. The only difference is that customers can get Auto Loan limit approved before they actually choose the vehicle brand/model. Pre approved Auto Loan is for the purchase of private vehicle and customer will have their loan limit approved before they select a vehicle. Once the loan is approved, the time period of expiry is three months from approval date. We have a simple and easy process with minimum turnaround time for this scheme as well. AL: Is the “Auto Balloon Financing” scheme similar as with the previous NIC Bank or has there been any changes after
the merger? SP: Auto Balloon Financing is similar as with the previous NIC Bank which allowed customers to have the option to split the loan amount into 2 loans in the ratio of 70:30 with only the 70% component required to be repaid on EMI basis and providing flexibility to repay the balance 30% in single or multiple balloon payments. We plan to repackage the product bundled with special features to provide exclusive benefit to customers. But Auto Balloon Financing is available for purchase of first hand private vehicles only. AL: How are your interest rates and tenure period for second hand vehicle financing? SP: We have attractive and competitive rates for used vehicle and financing period is of maximum four years with vehicle age not to exceed 10 years at maturity. AL: With the newly merged NIC Asia Bank, how will customers benefit from “NIC Asia Auto Loan”? SP: With the new identity, we have focused our priority on service delivery, variety on products and ease of processing. We aim to provide Auto Loan schemes with varieties of financing options comprised with attractive interest rate, tenure with simple process and minimum turnaround time. We shall be encouraging potential auto buyers to take NIC Asia’s Pre-approved Auto Loan as they will have approved loans before they actually choose a vehicle brand or model. Moreover, customers as well as auto dealers can also avoid last minute rush and unnecessary hassle by choosing to pre-approve their loan and later choose the vehicle of their choice. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal

>>Honda Amaze 36
AUTOLIFE July 15, 2013
www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal
How would you normally associate with a Honda? Obviously, the first would be with their bullet proof reliability that usually goes on to last a generation. Secondly, Honda has always been that premium brand placed a bit further away from the reach of most consumers than its competitors. But fret not Honda lovers! Finally, here is a good reason to rejoice with the Honda Amaze. The cheapest and shortest sedan from the Honda stable is now finally here.
“Overall, the exterior styling of the Honda Amaze is smooth and strong with distinctive character lines from front to rear.”
EXTERIORS
Up front, the Amaze is nearly similar to the Brio, since it’s based on the same platform. Only the grille is different as it now has two chrome bars instead of the Brio’s single chrome strip and the sporty air dam in the bumper has been body coloured. Come towards the sides and you get the Amaze. Thankfully, the boot definitely doesn’t seem like it was just slapped on to the rear of the Brio for the sake of it. The upward sloping horizontal lines towards the rear give the Amaze a sport stance and a true sedan like look. The neat second crease running from the tail-lamp through the rear door handle add some more character. Coming to the back you get a well shaped and nicely finished boot with chrome garnish and integrated tail lamps. Bigger wheels and tyres could have given the Amaze a better look. Otherwise, it is well put together. However, the Amaze was aimed at being a light car to aid in performance, driving dynamics and fuel efficiency. The S petrol variant we test drove weighed just 965kg! Overall, the exterior styling of the Honda Amaze is smooth and strong with distinctive character lines from front to rear.
www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE July 15, 2013 37
INTERIORS On the inside though, Honda has done little to differentiate the Amaze from the Brio. That means it’s the same boring three-tone dashboard with the basic centre console and hooded instrument panel. Those looking for a more stylish interior will be highly disappointed as this basic dashboard really has nothing home to write about. But at least the fit and finish of the plastic parts are great for its segment and looks built to last. The front seats are quite spacious and the driver’s seat gets height adjustment as well. The width of the front seat-back has been shaved to create more room at the back. The rear speakers have been moved from the doors to the rear parcel shelf for more width, and there are one-litre bottle-holders on each side. Speaking of which, Honda has managed to cram five bottle holders and four cup-holders into this car. The 400 litre boot is big by compact saloon standards and should easily accommodate the occasionally family shopping or weekend trip baggage.
38
AUTOLIFE July 15, 2013
Since only the E, EX and S petrol variant are currently available in Nepal, they have a little less to offer on the features side. The top-ofthe-line S variant gets 2-din Audio System with USB and Aux-in, Steering-Mounted Controls, Air Conditioner Unit, Keyless Entry and Power Windows as features. But on the safety side, you neither get airbags nor anti-lock brake system in any of these variants. All you have to assure yourself with is the Amaze’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACETM) body that claims to enhance self-protection while mitigating damage to other vehicles in the event of a collision. Interestingly, the front body structure of the Amaze is also equipped with Pedestrian injury mitigation technology designed to absorb impact energy.
PERFORMANCE
The engine too is the same that powers the Brio, except with a slightly different ECU map & gear ratios to improve low end power delivery. The 1.2L 4 cylinder SOHC i-VTEC petrol engine puts out a maximum output of

87 bhp @ 6000 rpm and a torque of 109 nm @ 4500 rpm. Like all modern Honda petrol engines, it is near-silent at idle and has good overall refinement. Pulling away from a standstill, the motor displays a decent amount of acceleration and the car feels at home in urban traffic conditions. The five-speed manual is a delight to use, very light and accurate with short throws. The clutch is light too and feels less stressful to use in heavy traffic. The Amaze has a very short turning radius as well and you can easily take U-turns in most kinds of roads at one go. Interestingly, a bright green

ECO light glows up in the console when you are driving economically. The engine though loves to spin more in the higher revs and performs better in the midrange & top end. The electrically assisted steering too, although very light at low speeds, does weigh up a little to give more driving feel when you go faster. The ride of the Amaze is not as soft and it doesn’t absorb some of the bumps well. But since the suspension of the Amaze has been tuned more for handling than outright bump absorption, speeding through highway corners shouldn’t scare the daylights out of you. Bringing the lightweight saloon to a halt very effectively are disc brakes at the front and drums at the rear.
VERDICT
The Amaze gets the right recipe for a compact budget sedan with decent comfort, features, good driving dynamics and affordable pricing. It delivers on just about everything that buyers in this segment look for. With the 1.2L engine, this definitely isn’t the car for people who like their cars to be fast. But it’s that car which now makes it possible for most new car buyers to realize their dreams of having a Honda car parked in their garage. With the Amaze, Honda has managed to deliver a car that doesn’t feel compromised at all, apart from the boring interiors. The look is spot on, it is well packaged and clearly one of Honda’s best efforts. Honda has played its cards perfectly with the Amaze.

A group of 28 Thai nationals had arrived in Nepal on June 30, 2013. Much to our interest, this group of Thai nationals was a bit different from the majority of Thai tourists that have been visiting the country. No, they had not flown in from Thailand and checked out from the Tribhuwan International Airport. They had rather begun the journey from their homeland 13 days ago on a convoy of three bikes and fifteen cars that included

vehicles from the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest, Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi Triton, Mazda BT-50, KTM 990 Adventure, and BMW R1200 GS to a vintage Land Cruiser. The group was part of TransAsia Route Co. Ltd.’s Historical Friendship Caravan Tour that started from June 17 in Thailand. They had driven and ridden across Myanmar, Bhutan and India before arriving in Nepal. Organised by the Yeti Group of Companies for the Nepal portion, the group visited some of the famous landmarks in Nepal, including Kathmandu, Pokhara and mainly Lumbini.
“Organised by the Yeti Group of Companies for the Nepal portion, the group visited some of the famous landmarks in Nepal, including Kathmandu, Pokhara and mainly Lumbini”
All members of the group will head back to their homeland, driving the same route back and reach Thailand on July 13, 2013. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal
Meanwhile, we managed to catch up with Kitti Nilthanom, Managing Director of TransAsia Route Co. Ltd, for a quick interview to learn more about their overland drive.
AL: Give us a brief info about your company. KN: TransAsia Route Co. Ltd is a Thailand registered company that specializes in self-drive overland cross country tours on 4WD vehicles and motorcycles. The company organizes overland caravan trips throughout Asia as well as Africa and Europe. Clients are welcome to join the tour with their own vehicles or can rent out the company’s range of 4WD vehicles like Toyota Hilux Vigo 4WD 4 door version, Toyota Sport Rider etc. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal
AL: What is the main purpose behind this overland drive? KN: This is more of a survey trip for us as this is the first caravan from Thailand to India, Nepal and Bhutan via Myanmar. Normally, the groups had to pass via China-Tibet. After the success of this drive, we will be organizing more similar trips. It was also a personal dream to venture this route since the last 10 years. Our main purpose however is to promote peace, harmony and friendship among these five neighbouring nations – Myanmar, India, Bhutan, Nepal and Thailand. AL: What is the approximate cost for a person willing to participate in such a drive? KN: The all-inclusive cost for this trip was approximately $5000 per person. AL: How would you sum up your drive experience in Nepal? KN: Nepal was great. In my opinion, Nepal was much easier to drive and had lesser traffic population than India. But our entry into Kathmandu was tiring as we underestimated the distance and
aimed for Kathmandu from Siliguri in a single day. Thankfully, we did not have any hassle/mishaps as we were constantly connected through the radio devices in all cars. It was amazing to learn about a variety of rich cultures, place and people from India, Bhutan and Nepal to Myanmar. AL: We see a vintage vehicle making this tough drive as well. Tell us more about that vintage Land Cruiser in the convoy? KN: The vintage Land Cruiser is personally owned by one of the couple sparticipating in this drive. They love to take frequent overland tours on their Land Cruiser and have maintained it in top notch condition. To be on the safer side, we also had the vehicle inspected thoroughly before this drive. AL: Will we see more of these kinds of overland drives coming over to Nepal in the future? KN: We already have plan to organize a motorcycle ride in October this year and we will definitely be organizing more of these trip next year onwards.

ountain Biking is fast catching up in Nepal. Young cyclists today have the vision to grow, change and challenge their ability professionally. Also, it’s not every day that you hear about Nepalese cyclists participating in international cycling competitions. Many initiatives are being taken by the Nepal Cycling Association to improve the Union Cycliste Internationale rankings of Nepali riders. Let us first introduce you to champion Ajay Pandit Chhetri, who is definitely the best cyclists we have in the country. Ravenswell Foundation, a Switzerland based organization, has selected Ajay Pandit as one of the two candidates to receive their support with the objective of getting at least one Nepalese rider into the 2016 Olympics. The support provided by the foundation
includes funding for two top Nepalese riders and a Nepalese coach appointed by the Nepal Cycling Association (NCA) to attend Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) ranking races, nutritional support and equipment. The foundation had also sponsored Narayan Gopal Maharjan and Roan Tamang during the 19th Asian MTB Championship held in China. Also on feature are four young cyclists from Himalayan Single Track’s ‘Team Single Track’ who have been training hard to participate in Langkawi International Mountain Bike Challenge 2013 in Malaysia and MTB Himalaya 2013 in Himachal Pradesh, India. These young lads have been training everyday fuelled with the passion to reach higher grounds. They have been focusing hard to ensure that each paddle taken will lead them towards the single track to victory. The riders are on a fixed
training program which includes interval, endurance, race, speed and recovery sessions. It is the first time ever in the country for riders to have engaged in a formal training session using sophisticated equipments like Garmin GPS, Heart Rate Belts, etc. Training is efficiently coordinated with international coach Ton Evers over the internet tallying the statistical data of each day’s progress. The training program is geared towards getting the team ready for Langkawi in October 2013 and MTB Himalaya 2013 in September. With the mighty Himalaya as their training ground and with altitude training advantages, these dedicated and gifted mountain bikers have the potential to compete at the highest professional level. We wish these passionate riders all the best in representing Nepal at international platforms.
AJAY PANDIT CHHETRI 25 years old

ROAN TAMANG 18 years old
After giving up school at the age of 13, Roan was sent to Kathmandu to earn money for his family. With passion in cycling, Roan brought his first bike with money he saved from his job. He ventured down to the local market of Ason and bought a duplicate Giant bike. In 2010, Roan then joined Team Single Track. He went from the chubby kid at the back of the pack to one of the most consistent riders in Nepal. This rider wants nothing more than to ride a bike. He now thinks and dreams about nothing else than securing a good result at the MTB Himalaya 2013. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal
AAYMAN TAMANG 20 years old “My dream is to represent my country as a professional mountain bike rider. I want to be a Champion in the international stage. This is the reason I strive to be the best I can be in mountain biking”, claims Aayman. At
20 years old, the road till here has not been a pretty one for this extremely talented rider. Aayman possesses extraordinary technical skill and an aggressive racing attitude which is screaming to be developed. Aayman quit
school to pursue his dream of mountain biking and has been working in Himalayan Single Track for two years – guiding, training and biking. Now is his time to show his skills to a wider international audience at Langkawi.
NARAYAN GOPAL MAHARJAN 28 years old
Narayan had always been a strong rider. But without the means and support to develop his skill, he had always played second fiddle to other riders with more time and money. All eyes were on him at the start of the 2012 National Championship Race, but unfortunately he snapped his chain. Already 15 minutes behind right from the start, he hunted down his competitors one by one in a supernatural show of power on the technical course. He still managed to finish third that day. Narayan not only caught attention of people but for the first time he awoke his winning mentality. Narayan won hearts over and over again with his never give up attitude. Five punctures in the 2013 Nepal National Championship and he still clinched second place! Now it’s time for his luck to chime in as he prepares to race in Langkawi.
JEVI LIMBU 22 years old From landing face down in the pavement just within ten minutes of riding with Himalayan Single Track for the first time, Jevi has come a long way placing himself inside Nepal’s top ten riders in 2013. Recently, he finished 3rd in the Recent Himalayan XC Cup Series first race ‘Peak to Peak’. Jevi has been following his dreams of becoming a cycling champion in Nepal by maintaining great discipline in his training programs. He will be representing Team Single Track at the 2013 MTB Himalaya.
RAJAN BHANDARI 20 years old Rajan started mountain biking over a year ago and has already established himself as the top ten rider of the country. He began his riding career when he brought a Honey Hunter Bike from Himalayan Single Track. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal
The highlight of Rajan’s riding career so far is finishing 3rd in the Lubhu – Lakuri race in and then going on to win two races at the 2013 Himalayan Outdoor festival in May. He sees the chance to race in MTB Himachal
2013 and Yak Attack 2014 as a huge challenge and a place where he can learn and improve his riding skills. For him, being a part of the Team Single Track is a great opportunity.

safety
safe monsoon motorcycling They say if you don’t ride in the rain, then you don’t ride at all. But honestly, how many of you bikers out there have actually looked out of the window and after seeing a downpour has said, “It’s raining. Let’s go for a bike ride!” After all, monsoon brings with it a gamut of hitches unlike any other seasons like water clogged road, muddy zones, traffic snarls, potholes, etc. Anyways, most of the time that you end up riding is the rain is usually when you set out on a clear weather and suddenly get caught off guard by the pouring rain. Also, riding in the rain at times can be necessary, whether you like it or not. So when the monsoon sets in, it’s important to be prepared to face all these problems and a few unexpected ones too. Get the right gear, stay sharp, and pay attention to your surroundings. Here are a few pointers that could ensure a safe and enjoyable motorcycle ride in the rain and prepare you for the monsoon ordeal.
TYRES
Worn out or bald tyres must always be replaced, especially so if it is the monsoon season. It is the tyre treads that give road grip apart from dispersing water. Make sure that a minimum of 2-3mm of depth is left on each tyre and not only in the centre but on the sides as well. Inflate tyres to the manufacturer recommended air pressure.
BRAKES
Ensure that both the front and rear brakes are in good condition. If your bike has disc brakes, get the discs cleaned and checked and also check the brake oil level. When you need to brake, apply more rear brake than normal and pump them so that you do not start aquaplaning. If your front wheel starts sliding you’re done for, but if your rear wheel slides you can easily correct. Brake gently and give yourself more space between you and the vehicle in front of you.
SERVICING
The most important of all is the timely servicing of your bike. Having your bike stalled in the rain and you getting stuck up is something you would never want, especially so if it’s raining like hell.
COVER YOUR BIKE
If your daily parking area does not have a shed, do cover your bike with a proper sized cover so that its components are not exposed to water.
WASH YOUR BIKE
Never forget to wash your bike after a dirty ride, however short it might have been.
GEAR UP
Getting wet when riding is distracting and very uncomfortable. So dress appropriately in rain proof gear. The clothing doesn’t necessarily need to be a diver’s suit, but it has to keep the water away. Make sure your helmet covers your
CHAIN
If your bike has an open drive-chain, clean and lubricate it regularly as a lot of mud will accumulate on it.
48
AUTOLIFE July 15, 2013

face, since rain above 60 kmph is going to hurt your face. Be visible. Rain makes it difficult for cars to see you. If you have high visibility clothing, now is the time to put them on.
AVOID USUAL ACTIONS
Normally when riding in the dry, we accelerate while turning, downshift while coming into a turn, shift weight while turning and accelerating, etc. Avoid doing these multiple actions in the rain as it puts more pressure on the tyres. Stick to single actions like accelerating only after the corner exit and shifting down much before the corner.
BE CAUTIOUS
Remember that a drizzle is more dangerous than a heavy rainfall. The road will be more slippery in a drizzle as the scant rainfall will mix with the oil and dirt on the road to form a slimy surface, rather than wash it away.
WATCH THE ROAD
In rain, surfaces are slicker than usual. Straighten your bike and avoid crossing paint lines, metal plates/manholes, uneven surfaces, etc at a lean angle. If you see a colored rainbow on the ground, steer away from it. Chances are that it’s a lethal concoction of spilled oil and water. Watch out for the puddles and avoid them if you can. Yes, it can be fun riding through one! But since the water hides the surface, the puddle in fact can be a 3 feet deep hole. You really don’t want to find out the hard way.
STAY CLEAR OF LIGHTNINGS When lightning starts up, stop riding. Unless you really wish to get fried in Mother Nature’s fury. Head for cover and don’t stop below a tree.
“if you don’t ride in the rain, then you don’t ride at all.”
SLOW DOWN
If you are already wet in the rain, relax. No point in getting pumped up and speeding through the rain if you are already wet to the core. Take it easy. Reduce your speed and enjoy the rain.
PROPER PARKING
Make sure you park the bike carefully and not in a muddy patch as the bike-stand might sink in the slush toppling the bike over or slipping it off its stand. Park under a shed wherever possible and avoid parking under a tree as branches do tend to break during heavy rains. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal

yundai brought in a huge wave in the auto industry when it first introduced the Santro as a reasonable and efficient family hatchback. The Santro went on to make Hyundai a household name and established the Korean manufacturer as a reliable and reputed brand. Then came the Hyundai i20. While the Santro had the budget hatchback segment covered, the i20 set out to establish new standards in the premium hatchback segment. The Hyundai i20 offered innovative features which were not even offered by some sedans back then and it easily hit the right chords with consumers. But, times have changed now and rivals in the segment have vastly improved as well. In a competitive market like today, a product cannot really afford to remain unchanged for years and still have a loyal fan following. So, it's no surprise that this globally successful premium hatch is the latest vehicle to
receive Hyundai's trademark ‘fluidic’ design treatment.
EXTERIORS Much has not changed, but the new fluidic design has further added to the premium factor of the car. The front look of the car has been revamped as the new i-gen i20 gets the family chrome finish radiator grille with new wrap around clear lens headlamps and trapezoidal fog lamps with integrated daytime running LEDs. The rear gets a redesigned bumper as well, new tail lights and a rear spoiler with integrated stop lamp. The car also gets chrome in the door handles, turn indicators on side mirrors, roof antenna and stylish 8-spoke alloy wheels. Overall, this refreshed Hyundai i20 has undergone exterior changes to come out in a better looking and sporty avatar. The i-gen i20 is a smart looking car that should appeal to the young and old alike.

INTERIORS
“The i-gen i20 is a smart looking car that should appeal to the young and old alike
The interiors of the i20 get a colour scheme with black, brown & beige colour combination. The instrument cluster has a clear layout, easyto-read dials with a blue and white illumination. The main console houses a primary multiinfo display in the centre which displays gear shift suggestions, digital speedometer, engine temperature gauge, engine run-time, trip meters and a fuel gauge. There is another secondary multi-info display in the dashboard that shows a clock, outside temperature and audio system info. The interiors features of the new Hyundai i20 are pretty impressive. It offers a host of premium features like Smart Key with Push Button Start, Keyless Entry, Automatic Climate Control with Clean Air-Cluster Ionizer, Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel and Gear Shift Knob, Driver Seat Arm Rest, Electric Adjustable Folding and Heated Outside Mirrors, Glove Box Cooling, Rear Defogger with timer, Tilt and Telescopic Steering, 2-DIN CD/MP3 Audio System with USB, Aux-in and Bluetooth connectivity along with Steering Mounted Audio and Bluetooth controls. Space at the front is impressive. With full steering and driver's seat adjustment options, it's easy to find your ideal driving position. Space at the back is good as well and one can sit in comfort without feeling claustrophobic.

The boot can hold 295 litres of luggage and the seats fold down in a 60:40 split to accommodate more if needed.
SAFETY The Hyundai i20 is loaded with many safety features. The top variant includes dual airbags, Anti-Lock Brake System with Electronic Brake Distribution, Smart Pedal System (in the event of panic braking, the brake pedal overrides the accelerator), Speed Sensing Auto Door Locking, Clutch Lock System (to prevent accidental starts), impact sensing auto door unlocking (in the unfortunate event of a collision), Park Assist Rear Camera, Electro Chromic Mirror (to avoid glare during night time driving), Dual Horn, Immobilizer, Rear Fog Lamps and Lane Change Indicator (one touch triple turn), Rain Sensing Wipers and Auto Headlamps Control (it switches on and off automatically as per outside visibility conditions).
PERFORMANCE Getting into the i20 is a quick affair with the keyless entry system. With the smart key in your pocket, all you have to do is press the black button on the door handle to unlock the i20 and start

up by pressing the clutch and pushing the ignition button. This new i20 come with the same power plants as its predecessor, albeit in a different state of tune. The Hyundai i20 Asta variant we test drove was powered by a 1.2 litre Kappa petrol engine that puts out 83bhp of power at 6000rpm and 114nm of torque at 4000rpm. This four cylinder engine is mated to a smooth-to-shift fivespeed manual transmission and compared to the older car, power has only increased by 4bhp and torque by 2nm. The initial pick up is average and the i20 does not really feel powerful enough for its segment. But the midrange and high end power delivery is decent. However, power delivery should never be an issue, as most drivers in this segment will primarily use it for urban commuting. The electronic power steering is light and makes manoeuvring around in city traffic an easy affair with the smooth 1.2 litre engine. Even on bad roads, the suspension does a good job of keeping the car stable without transferring much into the cabin. But as far as highway handling is concerned, the i20 neither feels like the best car to throw around corners nor offers good surge of power whenever you need it. Expect to really work the engine when climbing up inclines with a load of passengers as well. But unlike the dynamics, the i20's brakes are absolutely top class and spot on. The i-gen i20 with its 1200 cc petrol engine claims to offer a mileage of 16.1 kmpl as per ARAI specifications.
VERDICT The i20 has always been a popular and great looking vehicle, and these fresh changes only reinforces its position as one of the best looking hatchbacks in the country. Although a bit expensive and low on power, it's still well ahead of most of its competitors when it comes to interior styling and its host of unique first-in-segment features. If you’re looking for a feature rich, fuel-efficient premium family hatchback, the i20 should be among your top choices. The refreshed Hyundai 'i-gen' i20 is here to prolong the shelf life of this popular urban hatchback.

the living legend GIACOMO AGOSTINI compiled by: yonten yonjan
he has as many wins to his credit as the triple digits he frequently clocked in on his speedometer. Over the course of a remarkable racing career spanning 17 years, he took home 15 World Grand Prix titles (8 in 500cc and 7 in 350cc), 12 Isle of Man TT crowns and an astonishing 122 Grand Prix wins. He rarely crashed and was the dominant force on both 350cc and 500cc machinery for most of his racing life. Widely considered as perhaps the greatest Grand Prix rider of all time and definitely the man to beat for today’s generation of racers, he is none other than the living legend Giacomo Agostini. Born on June 16, 1942 in Brescia,

Italy, Giacomo was passionate about motorcycling from his early childhood. But his parents discouraged him from taking up motorcycle racing and refused to sign a document that would legally allow him to pursue racing. Since the signature was impossible to get, Agostini went to a notary and told him he was going cycle racing. The notary understood cycle racing to be bicycle racing and convinced Agostini’s father that Giacomo was a nice boy and it was a good sport. His father duly signed and he was cleverly able to start his motorcycle racing career. He immediately began to impress in the world of motorcycling sport and his parents too soon acknowledged his talent in the circuit.
“He rarely crashed and was the dominant force on both 350cc and 500cc machinery for most of his racing life.”
Ago, as he is affectionately referred to by his fans, then made his first telling impact in 1965 when he rode a 350cc three-cylinder machine to victory on its very first outing at the Nurburgring in Germany. With all eyes on him and his performance, he was soon given a world championship ride by MV Agusta as an understudy to Mike Hailwood. He narrowly missed out on his first world championship that year but, following the departure of Hailwood to Honda, Agostini became MV’s number one rider. In 1966 www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal
“Ago had a great feel for the bikes, worked assiduously at getting them right, then went fast.” and 1967, he then battled to victory against Hailwood in one of the most dramatic seasons in the 500cc Grand Prix history. What followed after this was a shocking eight years of dominance with MV Augusta in the world championships. He won the 500cc title seven years in succession for the Italian factory. He would also win the 350cc title seven times in succession and completed the world title double in both 350cc and 500cc with MV in 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972. Then in 1973, he won only in the 350cc title. In 1965, he had made his TT debut as well in the junior category on a MV 350 three cylinder. The Italian star rode in just 16 TT races, won ten, stood second twice, ended third once and retired just three times, all on MV Agustas. During his TT years Agostini gave the crowds many thrilling races. But shockingly, after the death of his close friend during the 1972 TT, Agostini announced that he would never again race at the Isle of Man TT. He considered the 37 mile circuit unsafe for world championship competition. At the time, the TT was the most prestigious race on the motorcycling calendar.
Moving to Yamaha for the 1974 season, Agostini then made his U.S. racing debut in the Daytona 200. The Daytona 200 race event that year was loaded with talent, but the dominating Ago rode to victory in his first attempt. It was his first taste of glory on Japanese machinery and he backed it up with another 350cc crown in 1974 and his final world title in 1975 on 500cc machinery. Agostini enjoyed his last competitive year in 1976 when he managed to notch up only a win each in both the 350cc and 500cc class. Fittingly, his last career victory came at the Nurburgring in 1976, the German venue where he had won his very first Grand Prix race back in 1965. He then retired from motorcycle competition after finishing 6th in the 500cc category in the 1977 season. Ago had a great feel for the bikes, worked assiduously at getting them right, then went fast. But Agostini was not just the most successful rider of motorcycling history. After retirement, Agostini became team manager for Yamaha and later led Cagiva’s Grand Prix racing squads to win world championships. Ago won numerous accolades over the years and was the first motorcyclist to be
recognized by the World Sports Academy. An immensely skilful and courageous rider, Agostini was a real crowd pleaser with film star looks and enormous charm. His celebrity status still obliges his presence at various international racing celebrations each year, and an admiring crowd is found everywhere he goes. Today, Agostini continues to wear his riding suit during the most important historical commemorations and keeps abreast of the world motorcycling championships as a television commentator.

I have never witnessed snowfall in my life. It’s an odd desire, but I have always wanted my first encounter with those fresh pouring snowflakes to happen when I am either driving or riding. Obviously, expecting to be blessed with snowfall while navigating through the alleys of Kathmandu would be like waiting for Megan Fox to come and marry me. It will never happen. So I have actually made efforts to let my first rendezvous with snowfall happen when I am on a set of wheels, on occasions more than once. I have driven to Jomsom in the peak of winter, been to Kalinchowk twice already, and waited at Nagarkot on several occasions. But tough luck!
“It had rained in Kathmandu a couple of days back and I was informed that it was snowing up there. “
So there I was, riding to Kalinchowk for the third time in mid-February 2013. Yes, in pursuit of some snowfall. It had rained in Kathmandu a couple of days back and I was informed that it was snowing up there. So I packed by bags and as soon as the weekend arrived, I set out for the quest yet again on my KTM 200 Duke. Kalinchowk is a fascinating hill station situated at an altitude of 3700m above sea level and at a distance of just 135km from Kathmandu. It’s one of those tourist destinations in the country that is yet to lose its raw beauty to rapid commercialization and home to the revered Kalinchowk Bhagwati Temple.

greenery by the roadsides, Banepa and Dhulikhel passed by pretty soon and in no time I found myself in Dolalghat. A quick brunch was in order with some of the fresh fishes baited in from the nearby Sun Koshi River. Since I was still full from the breakfast at home, I had to skip the alluring thought of another round of the delicious fishes and continued the ride ahead. Then began the ride through one of the most well paved stretches in the country with race inspiring corners towards Khadichour. With the brisk acceleration and sporty handling characteristics of the KTM 200 Duke, the ride was a pure joy. After Khadichour, I took the detour towards Charikot and began the steep uphill climb. The road from Khadichour till Charikot boasts of some of the most infamous winding uphill roads in the country. Here too, the KTM comfortably tip toed ahead effortlessly. The roads though had deteriorated in some of the sections with potholes popping up at frequent intervals. Finally the foggy town of Mudhey arrived and I stopped by for a delicious lunch at the local eatery that I frequent every time I am up here. As I moved towards Kharidunga after lunch, light showers started leaking from the mystic sky. I usually don’t like it when it rains during a ride. But this time, I was quite excited as this increased my chances of witnessing some snowfall up there. Kharidunga is home to one of the best Magnesite deposits in the world and with all those burned Magnesite lying around

the limestone surfaced field, the place provides a visual treat to any passer-by. At roughly 2700m above sea level, this is one of the highest road passes in Nepal. But the nearly 5km off road passing across the site was in bad condition as always and with the hard set up of the suspensions on the KTM, the ride was quite a bumpy affair. Anyways, sitting up on the pegs in motocross style helped to dampen the jerks and speed through the stretch. I finally made it to Charikot by 3pm and only a 15km extreme uphill off-road stretch remained for Kalinchowk. The KTM did pull through the steep climb easily, but the slick tyres would easily give away in the mud and slushy sections. Trying my best to still stay upright and not fall down, I finally neared Kuri at Kalinchowk. Seeing some snow from the previous day’s snowfall by the roadsides made me more excited about finally witnessing fresh snowfall this time around. But instead of snowing, the scant drizzle rather turned into a crazy rainfall. Ironically, it began to rain like hell and was one of the coldest rain I had so far witnessed.
“Not a flake of snow dropped from the sky, and it continued to rain cats and dogs the entire night. My expectation for snowfall was already looking bleak.”
The mud road had already turned into a slush fest. The hotels for Kalinchowk are all located at the base point in Kuri and the Kalinchowk Temple is another one hour walk from there. But the last 1km to Kuri had literally turned into a slush pit and was impossible to navigate through. Many other bikers had shown up and all the bikes were parked by the roadside. So I too duly left my bike safely parked among the pack and stormed towards the hotel downhill. Not a flake of snow dropped from the sky, and it continued to rain cats and dogs the entire night. My expectation for snowfall was already looking bleak. But I still remained positive and hoped to wake

up the next morning to a vista covered in snow and white flakes lightly falling from the skies. Funny enough, the next morning was no different. It was still drizzling and rather than hoping for snowfall, I now had more reasons to worry about the deteriorated road conditions from the crazy mad rain last night. After the tiring walk to the Kalinchowk Temple, I returned to the hotel and packed up for the journey back home. As I approached the road, the riding scenario had completely changed. There was hardly a stretch which had not turned into slush and the red mud had made it worse. Traction was impossible to find and I

“I had never felt luckier and blessed for having not fallen down face down in the slush. It was probably the sincere prayers to the Gods at the temple that did the trick” made the tough ride back trying my best to find whatever little grip the slick tires of my KTM offered. To add to my misery, it was mostly a downhill stretch where the brakes seemed redundant and the roads had zero visibility with dense fog covering up the view ahead. It was a crazy ride all the way and after riding at a snail’s pace for more than an hour, I finally found myself standing in tarmac at Charikot. I had never felt luckier and blessed for having not fallen down face down in the slush. It was probably the sincere prayers to the Gods at the temple that did the trick. After having gone through all that torture, the ride back home seemed like a piece of cake. Highly disappointed, I raced back and just before nearing home I found myself in another rendezvous with the spattering rain. So that was it. Another attempt to witness snowfall on wheels and still unlucky!

ADRENALINE FILLED RIDES READS
Let’s admit it. Most of us motor heads don’t really qualify as an avid bookworm. We are probably the last people who will enthusiastically bury ourselves into books. GHOST RIDER: TRAVELS ON THE HEALING ROAD In less than a year, Neil Peart lost both his 19-yearold daughter, Selena, and his wife, Jackie. Faced with overwhelming sadness and isolated from the world in his home on the lake, Peart was left without direction. That lack of direction lead him on a 55,000 mile journey by motorcycle across much of North America, down through Mexico to Belize, and back again. He had needed to get away, but he had not really needed a destination. His personal odyssey is chronicled with his travel adventures, meeting up with friends and family, and the grieving, thinking, crying, and storytelling of life as he rides. Along the way, he plays music from his internal jukebox, yet nothing seems to let him find peace. And without peace, all he could do was keep riding until he found it.
LIFE AT THE LIMIT: TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY IN FORMULA ONE If there ever was a crash in F1, it was Watkins who got there first. He was a pivotal character in the world of Formula One, closely involved in improving safety at the circuits and in developing rapid response medical rescue for over twenty six years. Eric Sidney Watkins, commonly known within the Formula One fraternity as Professor Sid Watkins or simply ‘Prof’, transformed safety standards in Formula 1 motor racing. Unfortunately, he died on 12 September 2012 after a heart attack. This book offers the memoirs of Grand Prix’s on-track doctor. The professor had been instrumental in saving many lives including Gerhard Berger, Martin Donnelly, Érik Comas, Mika Häkkinen, Rubens Barrichello and Karl Wendlinger. However, he’s also witnessed intimately the consequences of appalling accidents in which lives were lost. Obviously respected, often revered by those with whom he works, he gives vivid and sometimes moving recollections spanning the many years of his involvement. His incisive précis of drivers from the last three decades makes for compulsive reading.

jupiter’s travels Jupiter’s Travels is Ted Simon’s astonishing 4 year motorbike journey around the world. Brought up in England by a German mother and a Romanian father, Ted Simon found himself impelled by an insatiable desire to explore the world. So in the late 1970s, Ted Simon set off on a Triumph and rode 63,000 miles over four years through fifty-four countries in a journey that took him around the world. Through breakdowns, prison, war, revolutions, disasters and a Californian commune, he travelled into the depths of fear and reached the heights of euphoria. He met astonishing people and was treated as a spy, a welcome stranger and even a God. This classic text, which has informed a whole genre of travel writing in the thirty years since it was first published, will never be bettered for sheer adventure, passion, humor and honesty. For Simon the trip became a journey into his soul, and for many others it provides an inspiration they will never forget. Ted Simon is also the author of Riding Home and The Gypsy in Me.
ON THE EDGE: MY STORY In September 2006, Richard Hammond suffered a serious brain injury following a high-speed car crash. Here is his compelling account of life before and after the accident and an honest description of his recovery, full of drama and incident. An adrenalin junkie long before his association with Top Gear, Richard tells the story of his life, from the small boy showing off with ridiculous stunts on his bicycle to the adolescent with a near-obsessive attraction to speed and the smell of petrol. After a series of jobs in local radio, he graduated to television. His insights into the personalities, the camaraderie, and the stunts, for which Top Gear has become famous, make compulsive reading. It was while filming that Richard was involved in a high speed crash, driving a jet-powered dragster. His wife Mindy tells the story of the anxious hours and days of watching and waiting until he finally emerged from his coma. In an extraordinarily powerful piece of writing, she and Richard then piece together the stages of his recovery as his shattered mind slowly reformed. The final chapter recounts his return home and his triumphant reappearance in front of the cameras. www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal

Siddhartha a Kazami Saky
trying to explain his work in just a few pages of this magazine definitely does no justice to the awesomeness of his intricate and well-detailed designs. Siddhartha Kazami Sakya was passionate about sketching and most things automotive from an early age. Although it started as an initial interest to modify his dad’s Nissan Pickup and his Bajaj Avenger motorcycle, he is now headed towards professionally becoming an Automotive Designer. Yonten Yonjan from AutoLife briefly caught up with this 22-year old passionate individual, who we strongly feel could emerge as probably Nepal’s first Automotive Designer. AL: How did you decide to study Automotive Designing? SKS: My mom being a painter, I grew up sketching, drawing and painting. I was actually looking forward to be a good painter myself. But, after completion of my under graduate studies, I went on to study interior designing. Unfortunately, at the end of the
74
AUTOLIFE July 15, 2013
course I met with an accident and could not appear for the exam. With a strong belief that everything happens for a good reason, I joined Kathmandu University’s School of Arts and Design after my recovery. Though passionate about sketching, clay modelling, photography, drawing and painting, I still could not find that right spark in this field of study. So it was after this that I changed track and followed by dream of getting into Automotive Designing by joining DSK ISD International School of Design, India in 2012. AL: How was your performance at the DSK ISD International School of Design? SKS: I managed to distinguish myself early on by designing unique motor vehicles designs that easily garnered attention. The pre-learned knowledge and experience from the interior designing course and a year at KU School of Arts and Designs helped a lot in speeding up the learning process. AL: Can you walk us through how an automotive designing process begins? SKS: Basically, there are three main aspects - the exterior design, the interior
design, and colour/trim design. All the designs are derived from inspirations we get from what we see around. This inspiration is also called ‘moods’. For instance, I designed the Mitsubishi concept by gathering inspirations from the katana sword, long rides which I frequent, shark nose, origami and other things. The designing process starts from your abstract mind to hundreds of rough sketches. The final sketches are then fed into the computer for further intricate detailing and design rectification. The best of the few designs are then made into miniature size clay model and presented as a concept vehicle. AL: What are your future plans? SKS: I wish to complete my Masters in this same field of study and extensively work with big automobile companies. Then later I would like to open my own Design Studio in Nepal. I want to promote Automobile Designing as new and lucrative career choice for the new generation of Nepalese students. I would also love to contribute my design inputs to our one and only automobile manufacturing company Hulas.

safety
driving in the rains it
is that time of the year when the heavens open up and everything turns green. But with the arrival of the monsoons, also comes the advent of danger on the roads. The wet roads offer much less traction and you never know when an unexpected landslide or flood can block a certain section of the road. Then there’s the added problem of protecting your car from rust formation due to the rain water and mud contaminants. There are a number of things as well that should be kept in the car during the rainy season. Here are some guidelines on how to protect and prepare your car for the monsoons and enjoy the rains to the fullest.
COVER IT UP Cover your car if it is usually parked outside in the open. Waterproof covers will keep the water away and the porous fabric will let the humid air inside to escape, keeping the car dry. A car cover will not only protect the car from getting wet and stop spot formation when the water evaporates, but will protect it from small debris scratching it as well.
interiors and underbody panels from all the rainwater contaminants that accumulate in your vehicle.
TYRES The tread pattern on your tyres is the single most important thing in the rains that can keep you safely on the roads. Tyres must be in good shape with enough tread depth. Make sure your treads are deep enough by simply using a coin and checking if the depth is within safe limits – usually 3-5 mm.
CLEAN WINDSCREEN Dirty windshields are common during the monsoons and can easily hamper driving visibility. Remember to remove dirt
from the windshield before using the wiper to avoid scratches on the glass. A bottle of water and cloth comes in handy. Pour water on the windshield and wipe it clean with the cloth. You can then use the wipers to clear up the glass.
ADD WINDOWS VISORS Rain guards/window visors work like the eyeshade of a cap. With window visors you can also partly open the windows without wind/rain coming into the cabin. This helps prevent mist formation on the glass panels when driving.
WASHER WIPER Wiper blades tend to become hard
REGULARLY CLEAN The modern car is well engineered, but it is still adversely affected by the elements. So regularly clean your car exteriors,

“the most important of all things is to have a sane and sensible approach to driving during the monsoons.” over time and get coated with an oily film from fumes and dust in the road. So clean it with a soap solution or have it changed if necessary. Also ensure that your wash wipe system is in working order. Adding a drop or two of liquid detergent in the washer fluid bottle helps speed up the clean wipe process.
KEEP AN UMBRELLA One of the most important accessories for your car during the monsoons is an umbrella. An umbrella will keep occupants dry during ingress/egress. Otherwise people who are soaked in the rain will leave moisture on the seats/carpets and it will start to give out a foul smell if not dried quickly. Keep a plastic bag handy to store the wet umbrella in.
LIGHTS Wet roads absorb more light and visibility can suffer to a great extent in the monsoons. So have your light systems checked for brightness and the correct pattern. Always use good quality bulbs.
TOW ROPE AND SHOVEL
for hours. Keep some reading material as well to while away the time.
and ensure that your mobile phone does not run out of charge.
BE COURTEOUS
MUD FLAPS
Remember, not everybody has the privilege to safely travel around in their car with the rain pouring in hell. So be courteous while passing through pedestrians or motorcyclists on a waterlogged streets. Do not speed up and wash them up with a splatter of the dirty water from the waterlogged streets. Most of them wet folks out there wouldn’t really think twice to hurl a stone right through your rear windshield.
When you’re driving, what you leave behind your car is as essential as what you’re driving into. No one likes driving behind a car that is spraying a lot of muddy water and, more importantly, that can be quite dangerous as well for the vehicle behind you. Make sure you have functional mud flaps on all four wheels. After all, driving safely also means driving responsibly.
OLD NEWSPAPERS & TORCH LIGHT
BE SENSIBLE
While some old newspapers can be efficiently used to wipe fogged up windscreens or to be placed over the foot mats to soak water from wet footwear, a flashlight will help when you’re stuck somewhere in the dark and need to change a tyre, etc.
CAR PHONE CHARGER A car phone charger will come in use when you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere
Finally, the most important of all things. It is highly advisable to have a sane and sensible approach to driving during the monsoons. The roads are usually wet and you should not really speed through the roads as you normally would on dry conditions. You will have much less traction and grip on the roads as the tyres will tend to slip a lot more. Be careful while navigating through waterlogged roads and landslide prone zones as well.
If you do a lot of driving in bad sections of road, it is highly advisable to store a strong tow rope and a shovel in your four wheeler. A tow rope will come in handy if you are stuck in the mud and need to be towed out. A shovel will be needed to loosen the muck around the tyres and gain traction to extricate yourself.
STOCK UP Considering the vulnerable state of our roads especially during the monsoons, having some stock of food and water in your car will help avoid the sudden hunger pangs if you are unexpectedly stuck in a traffic jam www.softrock.com.np | fb.me/AutolifeNepal
