fter an overwhelming response to our fourth monster of an issue, it was difficult to restrain ourselves from putting the pedal to the metal on our fifth issue. However, all work and no play makes AutoLife a dull boy, and what better way to kick off the new issue than a trip to Jiri on the Tata Nano. Great things come in small packages, we learned this first hand. Relaxation and work at the same time, multitasking like a boss. Re-energized and raring to go, the Autolife team were all geared up for the epic drool-fest. The first drool-maal we drooled over in this issue (we know you will too), was the chance to get our hands on the completely exclusive review of the Korean muscle: Hyundai Elantra, redefining class, style and sports all in one. Keeping the ball rolling, we also bring to you the exquisite Skoda Laura. An executive class beauty that left us all awestruck, to say the least. Yes, the Laura does that to you. On the two wheeler’s front, we bring to you yet another exclusive review of the Indian rumbler: Royal Enfield Classic Dessert Storm on a time travel through the heart of the city. Kicking up dust is the Suzuki DR200SE. A machine which is said to revive the hooligan inside every rider. Speaking of the hooligan, what better synonnym can we find than the KTM. The wait is finally coming to an end, and Shekhar Golchha enlightens us on the much anticipated KTM Duke 200. Also, keeping true to the motif of experimenting with new aspects of the auto world, we have introduced the bicycling segment. Lets face it, the majority of us did in fact start out our auto-life pedalling a bicycle in our yards or tole. It’s just that some of us refused to stop, like Ajay Pandit Chettri who has been undefeated for the past two years in the highest mountain bike race in the world- The Yak Attack. Last issue we introduced a new segment, the traffic corner. Everyone has an opinion, but at times the opinion may not be true. We insist that you clear any doubts or queries you have about the traffic in Nepal by asking the experts. Send us your queries and get it answered in the traffic corner. Ofcourse only after you’ve had your fill of this issue. Enjoy!

I just read the February issue of your magazine and I am really happy to see a magazine with such good quality in Nepal. I am a regular reader of Indian automobile magazines but I will start reading AutoLife too coz the contents are good and I love the photos. Well, keep up the good work. I wish you all the best. I would like to send some articles too. Well done for your work guys. Kapil Phuyal AL REPLY: Thanks. We’ll be waiting for your articles...
If one were allowed to give a million ‘likes’ to a Facebook fan page, I would have done that to AutoLife, ‘coz liking it once is just not enough. Also need to confess something here. When I first came to know about this domestic auto magazine, I had my doubts regarding its contents, style, pictures, information and quality on the whole. But after going through all the issues (1-4), AL team has cleared all my doubts. You guys are good, and definitely know your job. I have nothing but only the best wishes for all your upcoming issues. Good luck. P.S. I have some complaining to do too. With each new issue, I either crave for that new vehicle you’ve just test-driven or those cool super bikes you’ve just featured. If only I had the dough, if only. :) Bibhu Bikram Pant
Kudos to the team for holding the right nerves for Nepal auto enthusiasts. I have been through 2 issues (1st and latest) and it’s pleasantly surprising to see such a level of detail in-line with international auto magazines. However, I just noticed a few things that could be of a little help. 1. Car prices - It would be better to state car prices mentioning all variants. The price levels vary distinctly across these variants and can be a crucial aspect of comparison. You should definitely know that Indian car mags like Overdrive etc. have it all in DETAILED format. Something closer to it would be excellent. 2. It should be interesting to see your take on SKODA LAURA Tdi. 3. The Mazda 3 review was a well reviewed article. However, a summary in the form of points/stars in every category: like design, engine, style, value for money, interior, exterior, service etc. would just make your take clearer and more effective. CONGRATULATIONS and all the very best :) Manish Jain AL REPLY: We are sure looking forward to incorporate your suggestions. Since our readers wish is our command, we have gone ahead and tested the Skoda Laura. Enjoy !
I bought your fourth issue and the design, layout and the patterns were spectacular. I was just amazed by the potential of this magazine. I clearly see a great future for your magazine and by god i will always follow you. Every article in your magazine are superbly done and would love to read much more in the future. But, I found a little, yet potentially crucial flaw; In the legends article there is a sentence- As a boy, AYTON (it should have been AYRTON). So, as a humble fan i expect much more...Cheers. Deepak Gurung. AL REPLY: Thanks you for pointing that out Deepak. Yes, the error is regretted. We hope to avoid such mistakes in the future.

I bought a copy of your magazine and I just loved it... Before I used to buy Bike India but from today onward Autolife will be my favorite mag. Great job guys... Siddhartha Man Shakya
Well to start off with, even though I am not in Nepal, Autolife’s online issues makes it easier and better for viewers who are away from home. I am glad Autolife makes us feel at home by just reading the hot news and reviews about the automobiles in our hometown. The bike journals and the test ride reviews are too good. To be honest AutoLife just makes the experience much better after reading the reviews and then riding or driving the same vehicle. Hats off to the AutoLife Team. Keyush Shrestha Got my hands on the fourth issue and had some monstrous fun. The pics were worthy of drooling over them. I was hoping to share some obnoxious driving/riding habit of our road users in the capital, through your magazine. Here are some of them: People should stop flashing high beam in the night even when there’s an oncoming vehicle? It’s more annoying that people still don’t change to low beam even after pass light is waived towards them. Why do some riders place their feet downward angled on the foot pegs. C'mon our local bikes don't have shifter or brakes on that angle, and that really doesn't look cool at all! Also it should be understood that when a bike comes with seating for two, it means one seat for one person. I don’t get what’s cool in the pillion squeezing into the same seat meant for rider. Suraj Deuja AL REPLY: We couldn’t agree more... I picked the 4th issue of AutoLife and trust me, I really like it. Congratulations to the entire team we now have a proper Nepali Auto magazine finally. And it looks pretty good sitting next to my other international bike and car magazines. I love magazines and especially when the issue is about mean machines I just can’t take my eyes off it. The cover title could be improved graphically to add that ZING that’s missing but the design and quality is exceptional. Wish you guys all the best and keep rolling your future issues with even more dashing materials. Sherap Sherpa

ONE MILLIONTH LAND ROVER DISCOVERY >> Land Rover has built its
DUCATI FOR SALE??
>> Investindustrial, the Italian private equity group that owns Ducati, is looking to sell the motorbike brand for up to 1 billion Euros, three times its initial investment, the Financial Times reported on Feb 13, 2012. People close to the situation told the paper that possible buyers could include Indian motorcycle group Mahindra, as well as Volkswagen and BMW. But A spokesman for BMW said that the motorcycle manufacturer was not interested in a purchase of Ducati and Volkswagen too declined to comment. Since Mahindra’s faltering 2 wheeler operations need a kick start again, Ducati should fit the bill albeit a very expensive and risky one at that. Ducati sells about 40,000 motorcycles per year and claims a market share of almost 9 per cent in the global ‘sports motorcycle market’ but also has debts of 1.7 times its gross earnings!!!
CHEVROLET LAUNCHES UPGRADED TAVERA NEO 3 >> Chevrolet India lifted the wraps off the new Tavera Neo 3, with a starting
price of IC Rs 6.72 lakh and the top end model costing IC Rs 10.26 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The upgraded MUV gets a revamped front grille and headlamps with integrated turn indicators while Chevrolet claims that the interior space and comfort also have been improved. The new Tavera now gets an ICML sourced 2.0-litre direct injection diesel engine which produces 105PS power and is BS4 compliant.
HOW ABOUT A LAMBORGHINI SUV?? >> Lamborghini is close to revealing a dramatically styled and luxuriously
equipped SUV concept that previews its long-touted third model line, a senior source at parent company Audi has confirmed. The SUV concept is set to get its first public airing at the Beijing motor show in late April. Nothing is official, but it is suggested that the 5000mm-long four-seater will have a retuned version of the Gallardo’s 5.2-litre V10 petrol engine. Known by the internal codename LB736, the SUV is expected to share its underpinnings with the next-generation Audi Q7. Conceived as an upmarket rival for the likes of the Maserati Kubang and soon-to-be-confirmed Bentley SUV, the new Lamborghini is set to sell in small numbers — likely to be fewer than 1500 units a year.
one-millionth Discovery at its Solihull plant – and the model is to embark on an 8000-mile expedition from Birmingham to Beijing on a special fundraising mission. The 50-day, 13-country trip aims to raise £1million for the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The journey is called ‘Journey of Discovery’, and Land Rover brought along famous explores including Bear Grylls, Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Ray Mears to help launch the journey. The one-millionth Discovery comes 23 years after the first model was built. Its success is still growing; last year was a record one for the Discovery as Land Rover sold 45,000 units in 170 worldwide markets.

MAHINDRA REFRESHES THE XYLO >> Refreshing a vehicle seems to be in vogue now days. Mahindra & Mahindra India seems to be following the same exercise with the new Xylo looking way more attractive than before. So let’s start with the obvious bits; the front grill has been re-designed completely and looks more at home than the grill it replaces. The headlight stays the same but now gets a blacked out effect to give it a sportier look. There has also been a liberal dose of black duct tape plastered around the windowsill to give it a wrap around effect. Inside, the top-of-the-line E9 variant comes with leather seats and a new dual-tone dashboard and some fake wood on the centre console. The most important change out here is the door handles, which look much better, and way more finished than the earlier Xylo. The new Xylo gets a voice control system which allows the user to control the headlights, fuel lid, wipers, door locks and other features. Prices start at IC Rs 7.37lakh for the base D2 variant while the top end E9 variant retails for IC Rs 10.25lakh, ex-showroom Delhi.

NEW SHADES FOR CBR250R >> Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India
have added another shade to its CBR250R, named Pearl Heron Blue. This is in addition to two existing dual-tone colour options in CBR250R – Candy Ruby Red and Asteroid Black Metallic. The new colours were earlier available for only models that were sold in Thailand. According to Honda, the design of the CBR250R takes inspiration from Honda’s globally successful VFR1200F and CBR1000RR Fireblade. The CBR250R gets five-spoke aluminium cast wheels, tubeless tyres, stylish rear grip and split seat and a blue LCD backlit instrument panel. The new CBR250R in the tri colour will cost more than the existing models by a thousand rupees only.
ASTON MARTIN REVEALS THE V12 ZAGATO >> Aston Martin has lifted the wraps
off the images of its V12 Zagato production model, ahead of the Geneva Motor Show. Like the Aston Martin One-77 supercar, the V12 Zagato will also be handcrafted and will be a limited edition with only 150 examples being made. Extensive use of carbon fibre will be made in the V12 Zagato and the entire cabin will be laid with seven hide thick hand-stitched quilted leather. Like the V12 Vantage, the Zagato will be using a 6.0-liter V12 engine producing 517PS of power and 569Nm of torque. It will be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.
photographs of its all-new flagship sedan to be launched this year in the Korean market. The company also confirmed that the Korean market name will be the Kia K9 as predicted, although the rear-drive saloon looks likely to take on a different name for overseas launch timings. The Kia K9 – the first rear-drive saloon from the company – is similar in size and proportions to the BMW 7-series and Mercedes S-class. The K9 is the latest continuations of Kia’s evolving design DNA, carrying its family-look ‘tiger-nose’ radiator grille and LED headlamps. At the rear, the car sports LED combination lamps, chrome bright work and a bumper-integrated exhaust muffler. No engine details have been revealed, but the K9 is tipped to use a larger capacity V8 petrol unit.
HYUNDAI i20 FACELIFT REVEALED >> This is the first picture of the soon-to-be
launched i20 facelift. As seen from the pictures, the refreshed i20 gets a light dose of Hyundai’s latest fluidic sculpture design language which is clearly seen in the front styling. The headlights are slimmer and the grille is hexagonal. The front bumper is completely new with re-styled housings for the fog lamps and a much-wider chin. The hood design is also updated possibly due to the new EU crash-test regulations. Styling changes to the rear include a new bumper and re-profiled tail lamps. It also gets new alloy-wheel designs. The updated i20 will also feature minor tweaks of the interiors. Expect the new i20 to get an official unveil at the upcoming Geneva motor show and will be launched in India thereafter.

NEW MARUTI SWIFT DZIRE >> Maruti India has launched the second-generation Swift Dzire at a starting price of IC
Rs 4.79lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It will be available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The new Dzire compact saloon is quite different from the car it replaces. At 3995mm, it is 165mm shorter than the existing saloon. This has resulted in an extremely short boot, and a more notchback-like look as opposed to a proper saloon. On the looks front, the new Dzire gets tweaked styling to differentiate it from the new Swift. The front gets a slatted grille while the bumper features a wider air dam and larger enclosures for the fog lights. Moving to the rear, the quarter glass has a more conventional fall to it and the rear door is marginally larger as well. The engines are carried over from the new Swift and this means the Dzire will be powered by 86bhp, 1.2-litre petrol and 74bhp, 1.3-litre diesel motors. In terms of performance, Maruti claims the petrol Dzire can hit 0-100kph in 12.6 sec, while the diesel Dzire would take 14.8 sec, before reaching its top speed of 160kph.

HERO-BUELL TIE UP
>> Indian two-wheeler giant, Hero MotoCorp has officially tied-up with Erik Buell Racing of USA who has previously been partners to Harley Davidson and has developed many technologies for them. The strategic tie-up with Hero means that the Indian company will have access to EBR’s design and technological know-how especially in the big superbike segment, where Hero doesn’t have any major offering of its own. The development is a part
of the Indian firm's strategy to enhance technological prowess, post the break-up of the erstwhile partner, Honda. According to Pawan Munjal, MD & CEO, Hero MotoCorp, "This tie-up is in keeping with my objective of quickly scaling up our own in-house R&D capabilities to a global two-wheeler technology power-house by leveraging a network of strategic international alliances." The company also announced that it would debut Team Hero racing at the AMA pro racing superbike championships in the US on EBR 1190RS bikes.
SUZUKI SWISH SCOOTER LAUNCHED >> After the initial announcement at the Auto Expo last month, Suzuki Motorcycles India has now launched the Swish 125 automatic scooter in India with a price tag of IC Rs.45,431(exshowroom Delhi). The Swish 125 features a 125cc four-stroke engine, borrowed from the Access 125 scooter, that produces 8.7PS of maximum power and a peak torque figure of 9 Nm. Visually, the Swish looks like a younger and sportier scooter, compared to the slightly-dowdy looking Access 125. The graphics and paint scheme also accentuate this youthful image, and should prove popular with the college-going generation. Suzuki is initially doing a soft launch, in select cities, and the full launch is tentatively scheduled around the end of March. The Japanese subsidiary will also be launching the Hayate 115cc motorcycle in April this year.

MOTORCYCLING - THE SOCIAL SIDE
>> Usually it’s about motorcycles and its various aspects that are under discussion at www.RiderzSyndicate.com. But that Saturday these guys decided to do something for a change rather than venturing out on the usual rides to nearby places. The members of Riderz Syndicate rode down to Aama Ghar at Ravi Bhawan, Soaltee Mode and volunteered to help out in the old age home cum orphanage for the entire day. They got involved in various cleaning and repairing errands in the household and around the location which was lying in a sorry state due to lack of young volunteers. Mrs. Dilshova Shrestha, who established Ama Ghar and is now mother to many kids whom she shelters and a support pillar to many old
aged people who have been discarded by their own children, was more than happy to see these young bikers dedicate their time for a noble cause. The point of the event was not only to dedicate time for a noble cause but also to drive home a point that bikers can get along for a social cause too. One of the volunteers Rabina Prajapati expressed that, what they did that day was just a small fraction of work that still needs to be done. So the members have decided to visit the place regularly to help out in the chores that still lie there pending due to lack of volunteers at the orphanage. RiderzSyndicate is also looking forward to have more volunteers helping out in their next visit to Ama Ghar. Our best wishes to these responsible bikers.
BIKERS RIDE FOR A CAUSE >> KTM Street Riders, a motorcycling club based in Kathmandu had recently organized an open get-together event by the name ‘Save Biking Community’, inviting bikers from all walks of life to ride together to Godavari. The point of the event was to highlight the dangers of rash riding due to which many young riders have been losing their lives recently. It was also a call to unite all the biking groups of Kathmandu, to promote motorcycling in Nepal in a positive way. The event served as a tribute to one of KSR’s club member Aavash Kunwar, who lost his life in a recent tragic motorcycle accident. The bikers met at Satdobato Swimming Complex and rode together in perfect
harmony towards Godavari. The event was a success with a turn-out of nearly 100 participants riding together in a single file formation and total discipline on about 50 motorcycles. A healthy interaction was held among the groups to encourage safer riding among their members. The bikers got along together and discussed various things with each other to promote motorcycling in Nepal more safely. The event was organized to prove everyone that biking brotherhood still exists and that bikers stand up for each other. The event was attended by members of almost every motorcycling club in the capital. We hope events like these does send the message of responsible biking across the country.

THE MUCH NEEDED TRAFFIC SENSE Especially dedicated to our mentally deprived idiotic drivers and riders
B
eing a Kathmanduite, over the past decade, I have witnessed the city traffic going from sparse to dense. This is not so only due to more vehicles plying on the road but equally accounts for the number of buildings and people that have mushroomed here in the capital. Today the flow of the city traffic has become heavy, aggressive and intolerable. Everybody is in a hurry and numerous traffic violations are committed by drivers, riders and humble pedestrians alike. These acts lead to (sometime fatal) accidents, something which could be avoided altogether. So here are a few driving/riding common senses that I think one should definitely keep in mind to drive/ride safely in Kathmandu today. Follow these and am pretty sure you will be driving/riding around for a longer time. 1. Be aware and cautious. First, assume that everyone on the road is stupid except you. This way you will be aware and more cautious on the road. Always devote your full concentration on the road. It’s surprising how many accidents you can actually avoid by always anticipating the possible moves of other road users beforehand. Be aware of the traffic around you and keep scanning the road for possible hazards. Don’t make sudden movements or stops, before checking on your front and rear. That’s why the rearview mirrors are there! And yes, do not drive/ride while under the in influence. 2. Make the right use of your indicator lights. Always signal with your indicators at least a good ten meters ahead of the point where you make your turn as opposed to just before you make the turn. It really isn’t fun to have trailing vehicles screeching to a halt and cursing you like anything. In fact, chances are high that the screeching vehicle will probably run out of braking space and run into you. So the turn signals are actually meant to warn other vehicles nearby you of your action 28
March/April 2012
beforehand and not after. Also, make use of your emergency hazard lights when stopping on a public road and avoid flashing high headlight beams at oncoming vehicles in the night. 3. Be patient. This virtue applies not only for your everyday survival and well being, but in driving/riding as well. If there is a traffic jam ahead, go with the flow. Stick to your lane, don’t overtake and stop honking unnecessarily. It’s no use trying to overtake a vehicle in front of you because no matter what, you will still be a part of the jam. Just because the oncoming lane is
Maintain a reasonable speed limit. Our country has no set speed limit as such but we really need to be practical ourselves. It’s okay to speed up in areas with less traffic but doing 6070kph through crowded areas doesn’t really seem sane.
free, doesn’t mean you can actually ride your way into it; yes, I am referring to all the bikers. If some other vehicle has signaled you beforehand, let them pass first. Also no matter what, never try to take on a vehicle of a bigger size than yours, you will end up losing. So take a chill pill! Finally, never hesitate to stop and let some of the ignorant pedestrians pass. Remember, the blames always on you if you hit them. 4. Maintain a reasonable speed limit. Our country has no set speed limit as such but we really need to be practical ourselves. It’s okay to speed up in areas with less traffic but doing 60-70kph through crowded areas doesn’t really seem sane. You are putting yourself and everyone else on the road at risk. Drive at speeds you can control. Don’t let your ego get the better of you. Trust me, the entire legal process one has to go through plus the money that you have to shell out for the victim and maybe even yourself, isn’t really worth that few seconds of thrill. 5. Stick to your own lane. Make sensible judgments in
choosing your lane. If you are moving slowly, stick to the left so that faster vehicles can pass. Make sure you are on the rightmost portion of your lane prior to making a right turn. If you are overtaking (especially bikers), never cut in too early into the lane of the vehicle you just overtook. Regardless of the severity of the traffic jam, bikers should avoid the pedestrian pavements and the opposite lane. Cyclists please stick to the left lane, your pedals really don’t compare to the horsepower of motor driven vehicles. Finally, stick to your lane while cornering, especially on the highway. You don’t want to find yourself stuck on the grill of a Tata lorry. Ok, I think these should cover the most of it. I agree there are flaws in our system too and we end up violating some due to unavoidable circumstances. Nevertheless, I encourage everyone to drive/ ride safely and sensibly, at least for your own sake. Riding/driving is one of the greatest joys known to mankind, but losing your life or limb in an accident doesn’t fall amongst them.

oday, Hyundai is no longer an inferior automobile brand not only in Nepal but all around the globe. In the race for selling in volumes, the Korean brand has been leaping forward with meteoric rise in their sales conquest at almost every segment. Hyundai has been coming out with new, stylish, practical, efficient and more powerful products frequently. So how could we not take notice when the Elantra was recently launched here in Nepal? Hyundai’s all-new Elantra is its newest entrant into the compact car segment. Considering just the looks, it might be very well the most attractive car in its class. In the western markets,
www.autolife.com.np
the Elantra is already a class leader buoyed by better reliability, agreeable performance, handsome styling and a long list of standard features. So we took it for a spin to be impressed with its smooth ride and responsive handling.
EXTERIOR The design is based on Hyundai’s “fluidic sculpture” styling theme as first seen on the 2011 Sonata. The good stuff with the new Elantra begins with its styling. The exterior is a well-executed assemblage of coupe-like curves and creases. It’s an even smoother take

than on the bigger Sonata sedan, and catapults the Elantra into a sporty, modern space. The Elantra looks like it’s about to leap ahead with its modern and aggressive front, broad sculpted sides, a bulbous rear squat and coupe-like side profile. The huge swept-back headlights and taillights perfectly gels with the pronounced character lines. The chrome on the grille does give it a classier appeal, while the fog lamps are a welcome touch. Overall it’s a refreshing and somewhat sporty design. It gives you a feeling that you’ve bought a smaller Sonata.
INTERIOR The Elantra’s interior is nearly as adventurous and sporty as the exterior. In particular, the hourglass shape of the centre console is fresh and distinctive. There’s a steeply raked windshield and the instruments are conventionally arranged. The soft touch dash plastics

and the matte-silver trim highlight gives the Elantra one of the more sophisticated interiors in its segment. The Elantra’s interior has lots of useful cubbies and storage bins, including a covered one that sits ahead of the shift lever, which also contains the aux jack, a power point, and the USB port. The central air outlets for the dual climate control system are however placed too low in the centre stack, with the driver’s vent exhausting most of its air into the back of the steer-

ing wheel. A tilt and reach-adjustable steering column is standard, and steering wheel is equipped with controls for audio and toggling the mini display. The deeply sculpted front seats provide good support and comfort but power-adjust options for the seat is sorely missing. The Elantra’s has generous back seat legroom as well as headroom, which though is slightly countered by the sloping roofline. The rear seats easily fold forwards and allow longer objects to be loaded into the relatively large 420 litre boot. The cabin is a pleasant place to be with the fluidic structure.
SAFETY Dual airbags help protect driver and passenger from injury in case of an accident and parking guide system sends audible warning while reversing towards obstacles. Each seat is equipped with three-point seatbelts, with the front two also fitted with pre-tensioners and load limiters. Stability control, ABS, EBD and Brake Assist are all integrated under Hyundai’s standard Vehicle Stability Management system.
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS The Elantra is a very popular product in the American market and has been rewarded with numerous awards in the region by almost 25 reputed media houses. Some of the notable ones were Top 10 Urban Cars of 2011 by Cars.com, 2011 Best New Car by About.com, Car of the Year by Autospies.com and Best Economy Sedan of 2011 by ConsumerSearch.com. It was also given a 5 Star Safety Rating by ANCAP (Australian New Car Assessment Program) in Australia.

ON THE ROAD Powering the Elantra is a 1.6-litre ‘Gamma’ engine, which is very well endowed for its size with power outputs of 130bhp @ 6300rpm and 157Nm at 4850rpm. It needs some revving to properly perform, but is certainly quick enough in normal driving. The driver is seated very low and there is that sort of sporty feeling but getting confident with the front visibility takes some time. Lowend acceleration is quite delightful making it perfect for weaving in and out of traffic despite its sizeable dimensions. On the highway, it also has enough torque to maintain momentum without dropping down a gear. Give the throttle a bit more gas and the Elantra responds quite well. Handling is very well balanced and lends quite a bit of fun. It’s a neat handler through the twisties and provides a compliant ride quality. The brake pedal is firm, responsive and with all-disc hardware provides good stopping power. The six-speed manual shifting action is precise and direct, which unfortunately can’t be said about its steering. It feels light with an electric motor doing assist duties and doesn’t have the feedback like on a hydraulic power steering. The chassis is nicely balanced and it feels composed and planted with bumps easily soaked up by the MacPherson Strut fronts and Torsion Beam axle rears. This car proved pleasant and painless to operate in every sense. The engine is punchy, albeit needing a good workout to extract its best, the pedals are light and well spaced and the gearshift is smooth. 34

VERDICT Hyundai already seems like they’re trying to lead a revolution in the automotive industry and the Elantra proves that they are going full throttle at it. The Elantra is a formidable competitor in its segment and looks a hot market prospect with pricing for the Elantra GLS 1.6 fixed at Rs. 42,96,000. We loved every bit of it during our spin around. Now lets just wait and watch to see how well it invades our streets.

Exclusive Interview with Shekhar GolcHha
- Ankit Shakya KraftfahrzeugeTrunkenpolzMattighofen. No I did not slam my head repeatedly on the keyboard. The above stands for KTM, an Austrian company that started producing motorcycles from 1953 and escalated in their ability to satisfy their customers as the years passed. KTM is Europe’s second largest motorcycle manufacturer, and just to reassure you of KTM’s capabilities, we would like to point out that KTM has won more than 200 world championship titles in all classes and remains undefeated in the toughest of all rallies, the Dakar Rally, for the past 11 years. Those of you who are already familiar with the brand need no more bragging on its behalf. After a pretty long period of rumours of the product entering the Nepali market, it is now time to clear things up. AutoLife brings to you a tete-a-tete with Mr. Shekhar Golchha, executive director of HH Bajaj and the man behind the KTM brand in Nepal, regarding the launch of the much-awaited KTM Duke 200.
AL The KTM Duke 200 is no doubt one of the most awaited motorcycles in Nepal this year. Tell us more about the product in your personal opinion and why should a Nepali buy one over the competition? SG The Duke 200 is manufactured keeping in mind the provision of maximum riding fun for the rider. The Duke comes with a 200cc single-cylinder, four-stroke, spark-ignition liquid-cooled engine that can deliver a maximum power output of 25 bhp @ 10,000 rpm and maximum torque of 20 nm @ 8000 rpm. Furthermore, with upside down forks, compact and multifunctional cockpits, cool graphics and exotic styling, the KTM Duke 200 has everything one can drool over. Also, the KTM is a ‘Ready to Race’ bike. To find a premium bike available at such attractive prices is not something you come across every day. AL So will the KTM Duke 200 be sold under the same roof as Bajaj motorcycles or will it be sold exclusively in a new KTM only showroom? SG KTM will have a separate showroom offering special world class services, which will completely be a new concept in Nepal. AL What about the after sales service aspects? Can customers look forward to easily available service and spares just like for Bajaj motorcycles? SG KTM will be providing after sales service to the customers as well as the spare parts, but again it will be separate from those provided by the Bajaj showroom. In fact, since we assume that owners of the KTM will be more in touch with their machines, we will let them 36
March/April 2012
watch the servicing of their motorcycles first hand. We will even provide a special chair for them to sit in while they observe the workings on their motorcycle. AL KTM has its own in-house after market accessories manufacturing unit known as KTM Powerparts? So will each and every add-ons that’s available for the Duke be available here in Nepal as well? SG A range of add-ons will be made available like the sticker-kit chrome, Akrapovic slip-ons, handguards, carrier plate, etc. These will be launched simultaneously with the motorcycle. AL We are just a few months away from the unveiling of the Duke, tell us more on how your company is gearing up to present a world class brand like KTM? SG Here lies the beauty of it. A world class bike such as the KTM doesn’t really need a lot of gearing up and introduction. It is here to obtain a niche market and we are not really aiming at selling in mass numbers. AL The KTM is a sport focused motorcycle no doubt, but for most people in Nepal only a fully faired motorcycle is the true definition of a sports bike? So how do plan to convince the crowd that naked bikes are also a breed of sports bike? And what is your sales target for the year? SG This is a naked sports bike and the use and feel of the naked KTM will be a completely different experience.
And we realize that this is not a mass selling bike. It is aimed at customers who know what KTM is and its true value. Since it is aimed at a niche market, we are expecting to sell about 100 bikes a month. AL So will it just be the KTM Duke 200 that will grace the new showroom at Naxal or can we expect to see other amazing motorcycles from Austria too? SG At the moment, you will have to suffice with the KTM Duke 200. AL Now coming to the most crucial factor, how much the Duke 200 will cost here in Nepal? When will the official booking and sales for the product start? SG The official booking will begin simultaneously with the opening, i.e. around mid April and it will be priced at a price of below Rs.5 lakhs. I believe that’s pretty reasonable for such a premium class motorcycle. AL Finally, how will the sales promotions most likely go about? Can potential customers look forward to interesting schemes and offers along with the joy of owning a fantastic street motorcycle? SG Taking into consideration the stature of the KTM, word of mouth itself will be a great promotion. At the moment we do not have any such schemes or offers that we are planning to introduce for initiating the sales.

Royal Rumble
The iconic rumble of the Royal Enfield dates back to almost a century, but till today it still manages to turn more heads than most main stream bikes. Review - Ayush Dhaubanjar | Photography - Kushal Goyal

emaining continuously in production since 1948, the Royal Enfield Bullet has the longest production run than any motorcycle in the world. With our neighbours down south appeasing the voracious appetite for Royal Enfield’s all around the globe, it’s no surprise that this retro marvel on wheels has captured the hearts of many riders in Nepal too. Dugar Brothers & Sons Pvt. Ltd, the authorized distributor of Royal Enfield bikes in Nepal, had recently launched the Bullet Classic 500 in a range of new colours and being the ones to not give it amiss, we hopped along

to review this piece of motorcycling heritage. Now how many showrooms can actually boast of having their product sold out within the first few weeks of launch and that too without any aggressive marketing? When we approached them, there was just one last piece of Classic 500 in Desert Storm colours remaining from the lot! In fact, that one too got booked just before we thundered out of the showroom.
THE DESIGN
The Classic Desert Storm comes with a matte sand paint scheme which
claims to be reminiscent of the war era when RE motorcycles proved their battle worthiness in harsh conditions of the desert. At a time when modern and sporty motorcycles are the hottest thing in the market, the Classic is truly one-of-a-kind that still has an enviable fan following inspite of its old school elements. This retro motorcycle is a stunner with metal-encased telescopic forks, classic hooded headlights, round indicators all around, twin tiny pilot lamps, a retro teardrop fuel tank with rubber knee pads, magnificent wheel arches, a meaty exhaust pipe and bits of chrome generously thrown all around. It’s commendable that an age old design has been maintained for the instrument cluster too. The speedometer houses the tell tale lights, odometer and is flanked on either sides by the key slot and a low fuel cum engine warning indicator. The absence of a fuel gauge is quite surprising though for a motorcycle that is promoted as a formidable tourer and also missing is the RPM meter. The switchgear however matches up to the present day standards and feels better to operate as it is made of long lasting quality materials. The classic design and the awesome paint job immediately evoke a sense of nostalgia to your mind. But the finish quality is still not up to the mark in

quite a few places like the visible wiring harnesses, uneven paint surfaces and irregular chassis joints. Now that is quite disappointing, considering the price that you are required to shell out to own one. But the appeal is still strong and its majestic and legendary build makes you forget all that niggles. The rider seat is spring mounted and the split pillion seat can be easily removable for enjoying those sole adventures into the wilderness. The kind of attention that the Classic Desert Storm attracted during our test drive was incredible, especially among fellow Enfielders. Ofcourse the formidable 500cc power mill too deserves a notable mention. The Classic comes with the improved single-cylinder 499cc, aircooled and four-stroked new generation Royal Enfield engine. Twin spark-plugs and Keihin fuel injection are provided to make this a character rich motorcycle. The ECU mapping has been revised while much else remains constant including hydraulic tappets and a drive-chain tensioning system. With all these features, the engine is capable of thumping a peak power figure of 27.2bhp at 5250rpm and 41.3Nm of max torque is delivered at 4000rpm. Crank the engine up and you are sure to get lost in the royal thumps that suddenly fill the surroundings.Â
THE RIDE
The Classic was pretty quick off the line with brisk acceleration and you just don't realize the actual speeds that you are doing. The 5 speed constant mesh
42

gearbox is smooth shifting and the gear ratios are nicely placed with the bike not feeling out of breath in any gear. The biggest surprise was to whack open the throttle in third gear from a stop. The massive torque takes over and the bike still pulls strongly without the slightest hint of any struggle. This abundant torque available at lower ends of the rev range makes it pretty comfortable to ride the Classic inside the city, in spite of its sheer bulk of 187kgs. A low seating position is on offer, but one still gets an upright and towering feel, maybe due to the increased 19 inches 90/90 section tyre at the front while the rear remains 18 inches shod by a larger 120/80 section tyre. Braking is average and does the job considering you aren’t some nut case trying to extract every bit from the classic 500cc engine and racing it down the road. This motorcycle was built to cruise and not redline. If you don't respect the classic, then you are bound to be bitten back. While going over bumps and potholes, the telescopic dampers up front and gas-charged shocks was supple enough in absorbing the imperfections using the additional help of the bikes heavy weight. Though we didn’t have time to hit the highways, the Classic should be a happy cruiser with its rock steady straight-line stability and planted feel through the corners. All this combined with the thump at your disposal, on each crank of the throttle, gives you the feeling that you are king of the road. Most of the people on the streets can’t help but succumb to
the temptation of swivelling their heads to the rumble that the Enfield generates. But the engine is still not the most refined and vibrations are something
you really can’t avoid here. At times it can be so bad, that things are hardly visible in the rear-view mirrors with the constant trembling.
THE VERDICT Though the vintage RE’s are in a class of their own and hardcore buffs still swear by them, the classics with retro styling and modern tech has helped in encouraging a wider range of enthusiasts to join the RE bandwagon. Yes this Royal Enfield too may not be the perfect motorcycle in the world, but there has always been a certain charm to the Bullet's vulnerable rigidity. As fans who swear by the brand would agree, learning to live with its flaws is a part of the pleasure of owning a Royal Enfield. Also, there really is no alternative to a Royal Enfield other than an Enfield itself. Be it through tarmac, gravel, mud or literally no roads, you can trust the Classic too to take you across with its tried, tested and proven over time forte. So if you desire the feel of going back a few eras and have enough cash in hand, buy this mechanical wonder and rest assured that you will get there. All you need to do is don your Dad’s old leather jacket, strap on a helmet, straddle the Royal Enfield and just leave home.

In a time when we already have globally present exclusive brand such as Hummer, Volkswagen, Land Rover and Ducati, it justifies to wish for some BMW’s too. There sure are already some privately imported Bimmers running down the road, but it’s high time we had these actually put up for sale behind the glass windows of an authorized BMW dealership. It’s a call for something to fill the gap that we have been lacking to truly redefine the luxury car segment in Nepal. From the most economically and technically feasible to some fan boy-fantasy ones, here’s compiled wishlist of BMWs that we would like to see on our thoroughfares.
www.autolife.com.np
BMW 6 Series
BMW 3 Series
This is the most economically priced entry level sedan from the BMW family. Extremely well built and driver-focused car, it’s a great value for money in its class segment. These 3 series are viable to run on our roads in prices much less that the already popular Rovers, Pajeros and Land Cruisers. Legend of BMW attached to a car is bound to turn heads even though it is an entry level sedan. Now being produced at our next door neighbour, it increases the greater chances of being imported.
The BMW 650i convertible is this series is touted as one of the best touring luxury convertible in its class segment and delivers blistering performance on its new 4.4 litre twin turbocharged engine. Its effortlessness, pace and luxury rolled into one. Albeit high on price range for our roads, but we never know which well-heeled kathmanduties heart it might take away. A perfect setting it would be to sight a convertible of this charisma touring roads of Kathmandu in all the beautiful weather it has to offer.
BMW 7 Series
BMW 5 Series
The five is a notch higher up the family tree from 3 series. BMW 5 series comes as the second best option which is viable in the economical limits. It is a refined, spacious and palatably styled all rounder you might be looking at. The quality quotient comes attached of course. This is a very possible addition to the BMW portfolio in Nepal if we might be looking at any.
It's the BMW flagship model and this full-size super saloon with a world beating engine is a mighty performance sedan. It has always represented the pinnacle of technology and luxury accoutrements in the German automaker's line-up. It’s a choice for wealthy car buyers seeking space and elegance with a cachet. It might come across as a very expensive option on our roads but it’s worth it all. This saloon competes on the leagues of Audi A8 and Merc S-Class, some of the best luxury saloons in the world. It will definitely be the crown of the automotive scene of Nepal.
BMW X1 and X3
We Nepalese love SUVs. They continue to rule our hearts and roads. These SUVs may be the best selling range for BMW in Nepal because of their right prices and the demand for SUVs here. The BMW X1 will even come cheaper than commonly sighted Range Rovers and Land Cruisers. With ample torque of 350Nm more than enough for both city and highway driving, it will be the perfect tool for the urban yuppie. We would love to see these crossover models break the monotony of SUV scene in Nepal.
With family-friendly wagons, crisp sedans, distinctive coupes, nimble sports cars and spacious SUVs offered, BMW’s model line is diverse. With all the hopes of these German marvels visible on our roads one fine day, we keep our spirits up and running. www.autolife.com.np

n 1908, a father took his son to see a race in Bologna. The son was smitten with the great sport of racing and one day dreamt of becoming a racecar driver. And so began the story of a legend that defined the world of Grand Prix Motor Racing, by founding the marquee that built some of the finest super cars the world has ever seen - Ferrari. Born on February 18, 1898 in Modena Italy, Enzo Anselmo Ferrari was considered by many people to be a difficult man to deal with, as all ingenious men tend to be. But his passion for racing and dedication to his company was never questioned. 46

Enzo started work as a blacksmith and a mule-shoer for the Italian army, but after being discharged from the army, Enzo had to look for another job. After a rejection from Fiat, he settled for a job in a small car company called CMN (Costruzioni Meccaniche Nazionali) where he redesigned used truck

bodies into small passenger cars and worked as a testdriver. However, he left CMN in 1920 to pursue his dream of becoming a car racer and debuted for Alpha Romeo factory team in local races where he won a third of his 47 races. In 1927, Enzo Ferrari was then conferred the title of “Commendatore” (Knight Commander) by the King of Italy Vittorio Emmanuel III, in recognition of his services to the nation in the area of racing. His passion then changed from racing cars to building them. 1929 marked the birth of ‘Scuderia Ferrari’. Enzo Ferrari established it as the racing division for Alfa Romeo. It was the largest team ever put together by one individual and caused a sensation. But Alfa Romeo woumd up the division by the end of 1938. Enzo then resigned from Alfa Romeo in 1939, and was released under the condition that he did not use the Ferrari name in racing for at least four years. Then, beating Alfa Romeo in one of his own cars became his new passion and he founded Auto-Avio Costruzioni Ferrari that supplied parts to other racing teams. Enzo did manage to manufacture two cars for the 1940 Mille
www.autolife.com.np
Miglia, but the company still failed to shine. He then relocated his company from Modena to Maranello, where the current company Ferrari remains to this day. In 1947, Enzo finally made cars bearing his name, and founded today's Ferrari S.p.A. Initially he was never interested in selling road cars but reluctantly built his first and sold those to fund Scuderia Ferrari. The launch of the V12 equipped Ferrari '125 Sport' marked the company’s birth towards becoming one of the leading super car manufacturers of the world. The 125S was a winner at many major sports car events including Le Mans, the Mille Miglia and F1. The V12 configuration as dreamt of by Enzo went on to become the basis of engine architecture for most Ferraris. But Enzo was not a popular candidate for human of the year, infamous for being prickly and tyrannical. Ferrari’s drivers were often against his ways of work. A man always willing to push himself to the limit, he expected and encouraged his drivers do the same. During the late 1950s and 1960s, seven Ferrari drivers were killed driving Ferrari racecars, and none of them lost their lives due to mechanical failure. Once on hearing of the death of one of his drivers, Eugenio Castellotti, Enzo is said to have replied: “And the car?” Maybe it was his undivided dedication to his brainchild, the Ferrari, but he often came out to look like a soulless human being. But there were times when he www.autolife.com.np
edged out of his hard outer shell. The death of F1 driver Gilles Villeneuve in the1982 Belgian GP qualifier left Enzo distraught to the point where he kept a photograph of the lion-hearted racer on his mantelpiece until his death. Enzo was also known to be a superstitious man, as he rarely came to see the races where his cars were participating.
Once on hearing of the death of one of his racing drivers, Eugenio Castellotti, Enzo Ferrari is said to have replied: “And the car?” Then in 1969, Enzo gave the Fiat Group a 50% stake in the company share, realizing that he needed a powerful partner for the company to grow and develop. He continued to serve the company and the racing team through the following decades and remained an influence over the firm until his death. The last Ferrari car produced under his management was the iconic F40s. Produced from 1987 to 1992 it was the fastest, most
powerful and most expensive car available at that time. Till today it’s arguably one of the most famous supercars ever made. No wonder most of those replica sports cars we played during our childhood looked like the F40. The sad demise of Enzo Ferrari occurred in August 14, 1988 at the age of 90. But his death wasn't made public until two days later, as by Enzo's request, to compensate the two-day late registration of his birth. To add to his honours of Cavaliere and Commendatore in the early days, Enzo had also received a number of honorary degrees, the Hammarskjöld Prize in 1962, the Columbus Prize in 1965, and the De Gasperi Award in 1987. He was also posthumously inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. In 2002, as a tribute to the man behind Ferrari, the company named the 12 cylinder midengine berlinetta after him. With only 400 units produced from 2002 to 2004, the ‘Enzo Ferrari’ sportscar nearly cost a million dollars and was the fastest model at that time. It was a good way to commemorate the glorious life of Enzo Ferrari as a symbol of his achievements.
Enzo Ferrari was not only an ace Italian race car driver but a successful entrepreneur; the founder of the Scuderia Ferrari Grand Prix motor racing team and subsequently of the Ferrari car manufacturer. He though spent a reserved life, and rarely granted interviews. Here’s a line from one of those few interviews of the man behind Ferrari: Of all the race cars you have built, Mr. Ferrari, which is your favourite? “The car I have not yet created”. What has been your greatest victory? “The one I have not yet achieved".

rankly, I am not a big fan of sedans. I am the kind of guy who swears by SUVs. Maybe it’s because I first learnt to drive on a SUV itself and ever since have been driving one. I love SUV’s for their just go anywhere ability which evokes the raw freedom that I usually find in motorcycles. So whenever we folks at AutoLife are offered to test drive a sedan, I usually am not the one that’s visibly excited. While a proper SUV could have me going crazy like a kid who just got offered a packet of Dairy Milk. So when the Skoda Laura arrived at our office, I didn’t really go running towards it. I didn’t even immediately ask for the keys and instead snuck into the front passenger seat as Shashi Dai, the company representative, drove me around and explained everything I needed to know about the Skoda Laura before I got set at the wheels. But I was considerably lost inside its unexpectedly posh interior imagining myself as some top grade business executive.
THE CABIN The first thing that you notice once inside the cabin, is the amazing build quality and fine finishing on the luxurious interiors. Everything seems so well crafted and the attention given to every detail is immaculate. In terms of kit levels, the Skoda Laura has enough on board goodies
to keep you entertained. There is a 12 speaker surround sound system powered by an in-dash six CD/WMA/MP3 player with a 6.5 inch TFT touch screen interface to control it. Even audio files stored on a SD card can be played through a card reader located below the touchscreen display, but there is no USB plug-in option and only an aux-in port is provided. The stereo can be controlled by the driver from the steering wheel as well by navigating through the multi function display in the cockpit which offers a load of other information like telling you your average speed, distance you can cover with the remaining fuel, average fuel consumption, top speed warning, etc and even more detailed information like telling you to change gears. The car also has dual zone system for climate control and both front seats have heating options for the winter. Even the powered side-view are heated and the demist option should come handy when the mirror is usually fogged up in cold mornings. The steering wheel is adjustable for both tilt and reach. The front seats are power adjustable and the driver’s seat comes with 12 way electric adjustment features. Three memory settings store the seat and mirror position for three different users, such that it can be automatically adjusted to the stored values at the touch of a button.

As far as comfort is concerned, the Skoda Laura is plush. The leather covered ergonomically crafted seats will keep all five occupants comfortable and cosy with enough space. A clever compartment under the front passenger seat is perfect for storing mid-sized items, while the storage space provided in the ceiling and under the centre armrest can be used to store valuables. The door pockets are huge and moulded to hold a one-litre bottle. The interiors are not only finely crafted but most of it is purpose built. The boot capacity is 560 litres, which grows to 1420 litres with the rear seats down. You can also have easy access to the boot on the move through a sizeable hole behind the centre armrest pad. The contemporary but stylish cabin lives up to the luxury and business class tag that the Laura is associated with in Nepal.
EXTERIOR AND SAFETY With swanky exteriors leading the market, the Laura is not really

something that you would call cool in today’s context. A strong shoulder line optically lifts the car, highlighting its broad shoulders. This, along with a fluently sloping roofline, though does make for an imposing, elegant and mature silhouette. The elevated ridge at the centre of the bonnet and the squared-off tail give it the more grown up look. Glaring headlamps with tidy black vertical grill act as toppings on the overall exterior of this sedan. It has immense road presence with powerful build quality and showcases some muscular build up with a mix of aggressive and sporty looks. Amongst other things you also get front and back rain wipers with sensors and cleverly hidden washer nozzles that spray high pressure jet of water onto the headlamps. To assist visibility around turns, the projector xenon lamp modules swivel along with the car to illuminate turns as you take them. This dynamic leveling also changes with acceleration, braking, inclination,
www.autolife.com.np
descent and weight distribution of the car. Another interesting bit is how the projector module turns up, down, left and right when the light is switched on at ignition, just like a boxer crackling his neck before the fight. Now how cool is that? On the safety front, the Laura is equipped with four Airbags and the front seats come with Whiplash Optimised Head Restraints. Parktronic sensors probe the space around the rear of the car to determine the presence of obstacles and photo sensors detect the intensity of light on the side view mirror surface that automatically reduces glare from the other vehicle’s headlights. Anti-Slip Regulation function combines with ABS and Electronic Brake Distribution helps to improves vehicle stability by maintaining traction at all speeds, even over poor road conditions. But if you really love to go about sideways, the feature can be turned off at the simple touch of a button that’s provided in the dashboard bottom.
THE DRIVE EXPERIENCE After soaking in the sleek exteriors and plush interiors, I couldn’t resist giving it a go on the www.autolife.com.np
Laura. Unlike most sedans that I have driven, the Laura offered clear visibility at the front and the wide range of options available for getting set at the steering wheels easily gives you the required confidence. The car sports a 2 litre turbo diesel engine and has the efficient common-rail injection with 16 valves. The engine feels refined and is considerably quiet for a diesel. It’s a 1968cc twin-cam unit, making 105bhp of power at 4000rpm and 250Nm of torque at 1900rpm. The exterior does not suggest that this is a performance car. But the moment you hit the accelerator pedal, it responds instantly. The power delivery is very linear and the car leaps ahead with hardly any noticeable turbo lag. The abrupt burst of power on pedal to the metal makes it easy for quick overtaking in the city.

In spite of its sheer bulk, it’s easy and hassle free to drive in the city with good all around visibility. The steering wheel is light at city speeds and weighs up sufficiently as you hit high speeds on the highway. Achieving three-digit cruising speeds is easy and staying there the car feels well poised and balanced. Braking was also spot on during our frequently interrupted speed run down the Arniko Highway. The cornering capabilities of the car even at high speeds is exceptionally good and with a low turning radius it’s easy to turn the car around tight spots. The ride comfort is pretty much as it should be in a luxury car. Independently sprung all around, it’s got MacPherson struts up front and multi axel along with torsion bar suspension feature at the rear. It rides with real poise, the suspension soaking all types of road surfaces in a quiet and controlled fashion. No wonder it caters to the chauffer driven clientele with ride quality as a top priority. The car has a ground clearance of 164mm and doesn’t cause any drama while pottering through broken roads. The car provides good fuel economy and delivered a mileage of 12 kmpl during our drive and while on the highway should deliver near 18kmpl.
VERDICT The Laura was a ball to drive thanks to the powerful engine. Though its look is subjective, personally I felt it really is a good looker. The Laura is loaded with practical features that one would want in their car. It has got the stately looks, space, high equipment levels, is safe, powerful and also fuel efficient. While it seems the perfect car for any business executive due to its more prestige-like exterior style, it might not appeal to the younger segment. It’s not the type of car that you would like to drive to college and show off. It’s more of the kind you would love to be driven to in. Also with the price set at Rs.51.49 Lakhs for the Skoda Laura Elegance we tested and Rs. 53.49 Lakhs for the petrol automatic transmission version, it sure falls under the premium segment. Yes the Skoda Laura is more of an executive business class car that gives you the expectation of a well suited gentleman stepping out, every time you spot it at the parking. God damn it! I should have suited up for the test drive!!

movie review
LONG WAY ROUND
VANISHING POINT
Long Way Round is the video record of Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman’s 115-day tour from London to New York on motorcycles, covering nearly 31000kms. Riding their BMW GS R1200s, they crossed Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia to ride the Road of Bones through Siberia, over to Alaska, through Canada, North America and finished in New York. The journey visited a total of twelve countries, starting in the UK, then passing through France, Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, USA and Canada, ending in New York. The filming was done by onboard cameras and one ride along cameraman.
Before The Cannonball Run or The Fast and The Furious, there was VANISHING POINT - the high performance car film that left generations wanting to buy a 1970 Dodge Challenger. Barry Newman plays a car delivery driver named Kowalski who works for Argo's Car Delivery Service in Denver, Colorado. He accepts delivery of a 1970 Dodge Challenger from Colorado to San Francisco, California. Shortly after pickup, he takes a bet to get the car there in less than 15 hours. Flashbacks which appear throughout the movie hint that he has either lost everything he has ever wanted and was reduced to taking the job of a car delivery driver as a last resort, or he is an adrenaline junkie. After a few run-ins with motorcycle cops and highway patrol they start a chase to bring him into custody. Along the way, Kowalski is guided by Supersoul - a blind DJ with a police radio scanner and they encounter naked hippies, racist cops and a weirdo snake-loving religious revival in the middle of the desert. Kowalski in the end crashes into the two bulldozers set up by the police as a roadblock, producing the fatal fireball of his death. Throw in lots of chase scenes, gay hitchhikers, a naked woman riding a motorbike and you've got a great cult hit from the early 70's. Thrills, spills and a handful of pills all adds up to one of the most spectacular car chases in motion picture history!
Some of the strange yet memorable moments on the trip include: a wealthy and eccentric Russian host who puts them up in his McMansion housing a stockpile of Russian weapons, some very vigorous Kazakhstani masseuses and a Mongolian horseman who comes up to the LWR campsite literally dumbstruck and wearing an expression you might imagine someone having if they found a flying saucer had landed in their back yard. Throughout the journey, Ewan and Charlie make appearances for the international children's charity UNICEF. They help to raise awareness for the vital UNICEF projects they visit along the way. They took time to visit a variety of sights and landmarks while travelling. They ultimately arrived in New York on schedule and rode into the city accompanied by a phalanx of bikers, including McGregor's father Jim and the Orange County Choppers crew.

really don’t know what it is about these off road machines that bring out the hoodlum in you. You just basically want to be bad. Maybe it was vivid memories of Ajay Devgan’s acrobatic antics on dirt bikes back in the early nineties like standing atop two dirt bikes with killer shades and a leather jacket that etched a spot for itself in my heart, albeit right next to the spot that wants to spray paint my name on Dharahara. For me, dirt bikes went hand in hand with rebellion and rowdiness. So, to no one’s surprise, when the chance to test the Suzuki DR200SE came about I was prancing to the Suzuki showroom. Halfway there I realized hooligans don’t prance. That’s when I summoned up the little swagger I had and pulled on a stone cold look to put the fear of god in anyone that stood in my path. Not amongst the better judgments I’ve made. Long story short, I was aching to get my hands on the machine. When I finally got on the bike, the corners of my lips that remained rigid on the “hoodlum” facade I had put on slowly retreated south. I’m over 6 feet tall plus close to hitting a century on the weighing machine. Topped off with the entire hullabaloo I get about being freakishly large for a Nepali citizen, the size of the Suzuki DR200SE slightly dampened my spirits. I had not envisioned a gap big enough to fit an Oxford Dictionary between my bum and the seat when I was flatfooted on the floor on top of the motorcycle. Sadly for me, the protein overdose as a child came back to haunt me and Ayush Dai’s satirical grin did not help much as the DR too turned out to be small for my stature. But as they say, you really cannot judge a book by its cover. Something I was soon going to learn first hand. Keeping aside its lack of bulk, the slim but strong semi-double-cradle frame of the Suzuki DR200SE retains the vintage dirt bike exterior that most of us remember. A look I grew up with. A high front fender covering the front wheel, which like the rear tire, hosts a mean set of spokes. Rectangular headlights and a non-complicated speedometer with no tachometer stayed true to retaining the retro look. The slim frame holds a 13 litre fuel tank but you will have to keep checking the tank for fuel quantity since the DR doesn’t have any instruments to warn you that its low on fuel other than stalling somewhere on the road. The tank leads to a comfortable seat that dips and rises onto a rectangular backlight that yet again takes you back a decade or two. The side indicators spring out, as visible as large floppy ears on a pre-pubescent teenager. The time travel concludes with a short sturdy metal exhaust that could withstand a pretty good beating. Well, soon it was time to get rolling. I pulled in the clutch and a few flicks of my right thumb awakened the 200cc 4-stroke engine. The low-slung seat definitely seemed to promise a comfortable ride and I was able to overlook the fact that I pretty much dwarfed the Suzuki DR. It’s lightweight at just 120kgs and the amount of torque available made in-traffic riding a blast. As I pulled www.autolife.com.np

Due to its dirt-capable design the ground clearance of 260mm was ample. Sharp turns in off road sections felt a joke with proper counter steering and the bike drifting under control. out of the showroom, a barrage of vehicles that came storming off a traffic stop greeted me. The smooth delivering engine however pulled through the traffic with satisfying energy and the number of vehicles on the rear view mirror escalated because flicking the lightweight motorcycle through traffic was a breeze. Springing off the red lights was a treat and I was finding myself ahead of the lot on many occasions. However, if you are looking for speed you rather look someplace else. The power is
more than sufficient in the low-end revs, but a breakneck speed is not the DR’s cup of tea. Nevertheless, it’s not fair to criticize the DR for its lack of speed on the blacktop, as it is a dirt bike at heart. The fun begins once the wheels begin spinning off the road. I went a little ‘throttlehappy’ when we rode into a farmland we came across. The significance of the front telescopic oil damped suspension together
with the rear oil damped adjustable preload was hardly felt on the tarmac except for potholes that were easily taken care of. But off-road riding was a completely different story. Ripping the throttle flung the DR across the hard dirt and it was finally feeling at home. It made its own trail in the dirt and handling the bike became much easier. Due to its dirt-capable design the ground clearance of 260mm was ample. Sharp turns in off road sections felt a joke with proper counter steering and the bike drifting under control. But the front disk brakes and rear drum has room for improvement. A few moments of off-roading and I found myself taunting a cow that was minding her own business. I was basically looking for trouble. The more I ripped through the
dirt, the more I wanted to test the limits of the DR. And the motorcycle appeared to want more every time. Escaping sticky situations on deeply dug trails did not pose a threat as the off-road tires pulled me out of the ditches I was intentionally getting myself into. Elevations on the field worked as make-do ramps and I was trying my best to imitate Travis Pastrana. The DR showed no signs of fatigue and did not deteriorate on performance even once. The fact is, for the average Nepali citizen unlike me who overdose on Complan as a kid, the frame of the motorcycle is just right. It’s always better to be able to keep your toes planted safely on the ground rather than teetering on tiptoes in traffic hold up. The performance on the tarmac satisfies as well. A comfortable seat and handlebar guarantees a stress-free ride. And there is plenty of power to get you through traffic. However, it’s a good idea to avoid the highways if you plan on overtaking everything in sight. Take it easy and the DR will get wherever you want to go. I repeat ‘wherever’. The lightweight is a boon while maneuvering through traffic as well as on off-road terrain. The DR definitely performs it’s best off-road.

Once you get to know this motorcycle, you can’t help but love it. However, the expensive price tag of Rs 5,99,888 lands you in that situation when the head wins over the heart. So unless you plan to get purely functional by going on a number of off-road road trips or own an empty barren of land to play around, you definitely need to take a second look at the price. Buying this machine will definitely put a dent in your wallet. Nevertheless, the motorcycle does not disappoint, not

ROAD SIGNS
Keeping true to our motif of driving and keeping others and ourselves on the road safe, we bring to you more road signs that everyone of us need to consider. Although the some of the ones we find in Kathmandu are rusted, dented, have a layer of mud on it, are on the verge of being parallel to the ground or hang on for dear life on a chain, it’s always a good idea to heed the road signs. So look past the grime and mud and after you figure out what the sign wants to show, try to follow the rules. Here are a few that we have clarified for you:
No Pedestrians This sign indicates areas where pedestrians are prohibited, and is usually found in urban areas. An example can be where a national highway passes through a built up area where there is conflict between pedestrians and traffic.
No Overtaking This sign tells the driver that they are not allowed to overtake motor vehicles driving in the same direction. This sign can be seen in places where forward visibility for overtaking is less than desirable, where there are side roads within the overtaking zone or where it is dangerous to overtake.
No Passing without Stopping This sign prevents a driver from passing without stopping first. This is used in roundabouts and checkpoints.
Keep Left (right is sign reversed) This sign indicates that vehicles may proceed only by keeping to the direction shown in the sign. This sign is used to mark obstructions like traffic islands, road work areas etc.
Sharp Bend Ahead This sign warns drivers of an upcoming sharp bend which are potentially dangerous. It is also used as an indication of the direction of roundabouts.

CYCLIST
Autolife sat down for a chat with Phil Evans (Race director), Ajay Pandit Chettri (The reigning two timeYakAttackwinner),andAnilGurung(RepresentativefromDawnTillDusk:EventSupervisorsand PromotersforNepal)tolearnmoreaboutthisdaringeventwhichwasscheduledto beginon3rdMarch 2012 and would be run for ten long days. Here’s what we were told...
Yak Attack
Listedasoneofthetop5hardestmountainbikeeventsintheworldbyMountain Bike UK magazine, this is definitely the biggest mountain biking event that is happening in the country.Yes, theYak Attack has been happening in our very ownNepalsincethelastsixyears.Oneofthetoughestmountainbikestageraces in the world, it is also the highest mountain bike race in the world. With over 400kms to cover and a maximum altitude gain of about 5400m, this race is not for the faint of heart. n association with Extreme World Challenges and planned by Mr. Chhimi Gurung (President of Nepal Mountain Biking) and Phil Evans, Yak Attack has been thrilling mountain bike enthusiasts for the past 6 years. Starting off with a modest 10 participants and just a 180km ride, it’s safe to say that they’ve come a long way looking at the current 38 participants that are willing to dish it all out for a grueling 400kms through one of the roughest terrains in the world. Apart from attracting international competitors, Yak Attack vouches to give our local athletes the opportunity to compete in an international class event that is usually not affordable elsewhere in the world. Hopefully, a potential world-class athlete can be sieved out amongst our own local riders. Furthermore, Phil hopes of maybe even entering Nepali Athletes in the 2016 Olympics to participate in mountain biking events. This event will also be directly financing the local businesses around the circuit as well as raising awareness about the diversity of activities in the Annapurna Conservation Area. Participants get the opportunity to participate in this 10 day long race only if they have the capability to face the unrelenting force of the Himalayas on a suitable mountain bike. Throughout the race, riders will be provided by a GPS map that will alert them if they go 68
March/April 2012
off track and volunteers will be guiding them along the route as well. For an entry fee of 1595 GBP , international riders are provided with a 2 night stay at the Kathmandu Guest House two days prior the start of the race, breakfast and dinner, porters, accommodation and transportation within the country. On the contrary, Nepali citizens need to pay only $400 for all of the facilities, making it much more affordable. Any remaining profits left after providing for the needs of the event and the athletes will go into a fund created between Extreme World Challenges and Dawn till Dusk Mountain Biking - The Annapurna Region Resources Fund (ARRF).
Starting off from Kathmandu, there will be a controlled start, behind a lead vehicle until the race is on the outskirts of the city center. The trail leads to an unforgiving 400m ascent up through Shivapuri National Park finally leading into a flat but very rough jeep track. After about 10km, the trail drops 18km and 960m into a rural and flat area into another hot and brutal 500m ascent of rutted trail towards the 1st day’s destination of Nuwakot. A rapid descent from Nuwakot to Trisuli Bazaar begins after a day of numerous climbs and descents on rocky and sandy conditions till the riders reach Dhading. Dhading to Gorkha is another steep ascent followed by a ride to Besi Sahar while bearing the rising mercury. Besi Sahar leads to Taal that comprises of a large amount of push and carry climb up till Chame. On the route to Manang, the altitude rises as riders pass through dense forests also passing Humde, the highest commercial airport in the world. The altitude steadily escalates as riders make their way to Thorong Phedi. Riders will have to then battle the wind as they make their way to Kagbeni finally ending the ride when they make their descent to Tatopani. Hearing out their narration of the event, it truly felt worthy of a world class recognition and we hope someday in the future it gets listed as one. Our best regards to all of the participants and to the reigning two-time champion Ajay Pandit Chettri for a hat-trick. God Speed. www.autolife.com.np

CYCLIST
1st Cycling Trip to Galchi - Poonam Gurung
F
illed with excitement and a serious case of the jitter bug, I woke up at 4:30 am in the morning, an hour before my alarm went off. After a light breakfast, a quick look through the day’s checklist and I was at the Pathfinder office by 6:15 a.m awaiting the arrival of other cycling guests. It had been approximately 10 days since I bought my first cycle.
I understood that my seat should have been higher and they also taught me how to ride downhill.
In addition, being a complete novice at it, I was becoming more and more nervous every second. Pretty soon we were on the bus and having breakfast again by the time we reached Budhanilkantha. We are finally at the drop point just above the Shivapuri Army Staff College and I realized that this is it. The point of no return, a shaky start and off we were. Through the lush green forest of Shivapuri, off road with pot holes, mud, loose dirt and mostly downhill was the start to my first ever cycling trip. With help from friends and the ever helpful staff of Pathfinder, I learned a few tips. In the first 5 minutes of the ride I understood that my seat should
have been higher and they also taught me how to ride downhill. I might have been a fumbling rider but I guess I made up for that with my enthusiasm. It was stunning to realize that just outside the rim of the Kathmandu valley lay such beautiful landscape, with abundance of flora and fauna and the simple village life untouched by the modern world. However, this amazing off road heaven for cyclist is no longer going to stay that way. As modern life is creeping in and the development process has already started with the new Tokha Gurjebhanjyang highway which is under construction. Well, I got to enjoy this amazing 17 kms of off road downhill ride. I could see

and understand why my fellow riders had this elated look on their faces while having our first tea break at Thapa Gaun. After the downhill came the finally did more gruesome flat area ride it! I reached of approximately 7 – 8 kms of Galchi. The offroad ride before we reached sense of
achievement was awesome. I thought I could single handedly take on the whole world.
Gangatey. This nearly destroyed me. By the time I crossed the Gangatey suspension bridge I thought I would not be able to complete the ride. Innocent beautiful children along the way were a huge source of encouragement and entertainment. Comments like, “I am fine, thank you.” without us asking them how they were, was hilarious. The excitement of talking to and teasing foreigners was their way of having fun I guess. We Nepalese are a friendly bunch aren’t we? The funny thing about difficult rides is that after all the hard work riding uphill and through difficult terrain, when you finally reach a little bit of downhill you forget

everything and all your energy comes back. After the Gangatey Bridge, we passed through the towns of Battar and Devighat, along the edge of the Lekhu Khola. Compared to the earlier section of the ride, this was a breeze. I finally did it! I reached Galchi. The sense of achievement was awesome. I thought I could single handedly take on the whole world. The whole 72 kms of the ride made me a stronger and more confident person. So all you cycling beginners, I definitely recommend you to try something like this. Just randomly book yourself on a tour and discover, amaze yourself.

the nano expedition We drive to Jiri on not just one, but two Tata Nanos‌ Words & Photography : AL Team

Never underestimate anybody in life. It’s a popular moral piece of advice. But most of us never learn our lessons unless we experience it firsthand and the same happened to us ignorant ones at AutoLife only recently. Tata Nepal had approached us to do a road trip and that did get us mighty excited about the offer. But frankly, we were a little skeptical when we learnt that we had to drive to Jiri on two Tata Nanos. This roadtrip would see the Nanos cruising through all sorts of terrains like cities, highways, hills, off road, etc and this was going to be a challenge, no doubt. So we weren’t really sure about our well being on this nearly 200km stretch of treacherous and winding uphill road to Jiri from Kathmandu. But boy, were we proved wrong! Here is the story of how the Nano turned things around for us, shattering almost every myth and proving that the Nano is as drivable, capable and reliable as any other car. First of all, it was amazing to see the response and celebrity level attention that the Nano garnered on the streets during our trial runs in Kathmandu. The level of anticipation for the Nano was surprising; especially among mid-aged motorcyclists who inspect the Nano inside-out and kids

who lust for it as if it was some toy. Now, the funny thing was that almost every person that noticed the Nano would blurt out the word ‘NANO’, as we passed by. Well, it isn’t called the people’s car for nothing. Anyways, we were told that the Nano, powered by a 624cc single cylinder engine, was capable of a top speed of 105km/hr. So the morning we set out for our trip, as the highway to Bhaktapur was relatively empty, we gave it the pedal to the metal. We were dubious about crossing that ton mark, but the expressions on our faces were actually worth

capturing rather than the photograph of the speedometer achieving the same with the yellow top speed warning light blinking furiously. The car did take some time getting there, but the amazing fact was that it still felt rock stable. With a wide grin across our faces, we moved on towards Dhulikhel where we were beginning to know the Nano in the twisties and loving the prologue to our trip. The car was doing great. The drum brakes complimented the weight and dimensions of the petite Nano. It was a delight gunning the little toddler down towards Dolalghat, as we
drove in tandem managing good cruising speeds. And, since nothing beats the joy of hot tea by the roadside on a cold winter morning, we finally stopped by for some at Dolalghat, pushing the Nano further down the road. Driving by the riverside is always fun and it’s much more exciting when you realize you can actually get down to the river and relax for some time by the sandy banks of the river. The lazy bums that we are, instead of walking, we drove the Nano along the stony and sandy path towards the river at Sukute. We were glad that the car did not mind our stubbornness

at all and took us near the river without scraping its belly or getting stuck. Why we dared to do that? Well even if we got ourselves stuck in the mud, the Nano weighing in at just 600kgs, could be easily pushed out by the well-built five of us that were comfortably seated in the two Nanos. We then lunched at Khadichour on the regular highway fare and took the diversion towards Charikot. The road from Khadichour till Charikot boasts of some of the most infamous winding uphill roads

in the country and this was one of those points where we were precarious for our well being aboard the Nano. But again, the car comfortably tip toed ahead in 2nd gear even with four full grown adults on board. Even the lack of power steering was hardly felt with the car easily maneuvering due to its light weight. After our frequent photo stops, we finally made it to the foggy town of Mudhey and climbed higher towards Kharidhunga. Kharidhunga is home to one of the best Magnesite deposits in the world and with all those burned Magnesite lying around the limestone surfaced field, the place provides a visual treat to any passer-by. As soon as you reach here, the vista suddenly opens up to a dramatic view of sky and land. The nearly 5km public road passing across the site is always in very bad condition and at roughly 2700m above sea level, this is one of the highest road pass in Nepal. Thankfully, the Nano with its soft sprung suspension ensured that we were comfortably planted on our March/April 2012

seats during the entire bumpy ride. By the time we reached Charikot, it was already 6pm and we still had a good 55kms of another set of winding roads to complete. As the sun finally disappeared behind the horizon and the roads illuminated by our headlights alone, sharing spooky stories came about pretty naturally. First off were the chilling stories of countless unsuspecting drivers who fall prey to the seductions of sultry damsels that dwell the barren tarmac. Another particular thriller was the unsettled souls of faceless toddlers, playing in the roads in the dead of night. While our minds played vicious pranks on us with shrill laughs and visions of bodiless arms tapping at the side window to accompany the demented fairy tales, a stray stump appeared unexpectedly in the middle of the road. As we swerved to avoid the obstruction, a deafening silence spread and our stories petered out into the night. To our relief, we finally made it to Jiri at 8pm and surprisingly almost the entire town had already gone to sleep.
stories and jokes in our Shisha smoke filled room, and sipping away the local specialty Tongba to beat the extreme chill. With clean rooms, good food and very hospitable owners this hotel is definitely the place to stay the next time you are at Jiri. The next morning we caught up on breakfast with fine fresh cheese and toast before checking out. After a roam around town, we drove towards the Alpacas farm, some 8kms on the way back from Jiri. The Alpacas are strange animals that look like a hybrid of sheep and camel. These animals were imported from South America and are bred at a private farm here for business purposes. They sure look strange but their wool easily fetches around Rs.1.5 Lakhs for a kilo. Yes, if the Tata Nano had more space, we would have definitely hijacked a couple of those animals from the isolated farm. The return journey proved more fun as we were more confident with the Nano and literally sped our way through the
Jiri is a small bustling village located at a road distance of roughly 190km from Kathmandu and situated at an altitude of about 1900m. Earlier Jiri used to known as ‘The Gateway to Everest’; since people used to start the trek to Everest from here before the airstrip at Lukla came into existence. The drive to Jiri took us through some fine sections of narrow and winding roads that were built in assistance from the Swiss Government. We checked in at the Hotel Jirel Gabela, which was probably the only hotel that had safe parking facilities for our two Nanos. After a tasty dinner, we passed away the night sharing 80

empty road in the morning. This is not an exaggeration but at some fine stretches of road, we did feel like as if we were driving through some rally stages. Yes, the Nano was that good! Also, its small road presence made sure that we had a safer margin for other vehicles to pass considering that we stuck on to our side. Every one of you who thought that the Tata Nano is an underpowered, small city car, please do take note. The Tata Nano did drive home a point that it is as good as any other car and handled the highways without any pain. www.autolife.com.np
Though it’s surely lacking on features but in terms of speed, space, comfort, pickup, 18kmpl fuel economy and value for money, we only have praises to say about Nano. Despite of limited engine capacity, the Nano does tend to out-perform itself at times. Of course would have done more wonders had it been available at least below the 5 Lakhs price range which is sadly impossible due to our absurd taxation policy of nearly 240% and showroom prices in India already starting from roughly IC 1.5 Lakhs. But what the heck? March/April 2012

It’s still the most affordable brand new car that you can drive out of the showroom in Nepal with prices starting from roughly Rs.8 Lakhs. So getting back to our story, we then lunched at Mudhey on the return leg of the trip. Those delicious mutton curries served at the local eatery could definitely give some of the restaurants in Kathmandu a run for their money. But taking second helpings of gravilicious mutton curry did not turn out to be really the brightest of ideas on one of the Nanos. It is very difficult to play the blame game in a car with just two people when one of us lets a stinky one loose. Nevertheless

we beared it all. With most of us braying like donkeys to the tunes being played in our Nanos, our ear drums were at the brink of shattering. It was a good thing we were maintaining a steady speed, else a few rotten tomatoes definitely had our names on them. Finally after countless conversations on almost every topic under the sun, we made it back to Kathmandu safe and sound with zero technical glitches and not one bit tired. Jiri is indeed the place to visit if you want to unwind yourself in the countryside with a couple of holidays to spare. So get your motors running and head out on the highway‌

>>Motorcycle Air filter cleaning
he air filter prevents dust and stray particles from entering and damaging the engine internals. Unless you are willing to risk finding a fluttering fly inside your engine, it’s a good idea to clean it regularly and thoroughly. A dirty and clogged air filter reduces airflow & makes the bike run slightly on the richer side burning more fuel, thereby decreasing fuel economy and affecting the performance negatively.
What you will need Kerosene Diesel Petrol Engine Oil 8mm T-spanner Bottle equipped with a Sprayer CAUTION
Never turn on the bike without the air filter. Foreign particles can enter into the chamber & damage the engine internals. So don’t let any dust enter the air filter box when it is open. Also remember that not all air filters are washable. Some can only be blown with pressurized air.
STEP 1 To locate the air filter in your motorcycle, put your motorcycle on its centre stand and scoot down to the side where the air filter is located. It was on the right hand side on our Pulsar 220. Remove the plastic side panel and you’ll find a box secured with some bolts. The air filter is located behind the plastic plate. Remove the bolts securing the cover with the 8mm T-spanner and pull it off to reveal the air filter.
STEP 2 You will find a protrusion on the lower part of the air filter, grip it and pull it out with ease. Now, remove the black frame from inside the air filter. Also pull out the mesh which faces the engine side. Keep them on a surface away from dust or sand preferably on a clean paper. Remember how you have removed the filter and its components so that you know the correct alignment later when you have to put it back.
STEP 3 Liberally spray some kerosene and diesel over both sides of the filter foam. Or pour the liquid in two different containers and first soak it in kerosene then in diesel. Fold the air filter in the middle and gently rub it thoroughly, then squeeze it thoroughly so all the excess kerosene and diesel drips out. But do be careful not to damage it. Do not twist and squeeze the air filter as it will tear it apart. Check for proper cleaning of the filter & repeat the same process if required. Also, make sure you don’t dip the foam in water. Incase dropped in water, let it dry completely for ample amount of time under the sun. If you do have an air blower at arm’s reach, use it to remove the remnants of the kerosene and diesel. If you don’t have an air blower, just tap the filter repeatedly in your palm until the remaining kerosene and diesel is drained. Set it aside on a clean paper.
It’s more than just oil
STEP 4 Now spray Petrol on the black colored support frame of the air filter & the mesh and rub over it using your fingers & tap it gently on the palm to clean it. Then place them on clean paper as well. Next, get your hands on some engine oil preferably Castrol (any grade will do) and pour a few drops on the yellow side of the air filter. Gently squeeze the air filter so that the oil spreads evenly on the foam. We do this so that dust and particles stick more easily on the air filter.
STEP 5 Now put back the black colored support frame of the air filter into the foam & keep it aside. After this, put the mesh back into the air filter box. The round notches on the edge should face outside. When completely in they should lock into the slot provided for it. You’re almost done. Gently push the air filter back into the air filter slot with the white side facing the engine. Also, make sure the protrusion is facing you and remains on the lower side.
Close the air filter cover & tighten the 4 bolts using the 8mm T-Spanner. Do not over-tighten them as their treads may slip. Fit the side cover back, switch the bike on, let it idle for a minute & badabing badaboom, you’re done. Give yourself a pat on the back.
12 TIPS FOR YOUR MOTORCYLE TOUR By: Pramod Shrestha Goofy Himalayan Enfielders
There is no better way to travel through the Nepali countryside than on a motorbike. Whether your journey is to culminate at a preset destination or whether you are touring to different places, taking in the sights and sounds of our beautiful country, the one and the most important thing is to be prepared. These tips should help you in having a fun, safe journey.
1. Prepare the motorcycle for the trip. Have the bike checked and thoroughly serviced by an authorized mechanic to assure it is ready
for the trip. Replace or repair anything that looks worn. 2. Change the oil and filter on the motorcycle. Have some knowledge about the functions of the different parts of the bike and carry along a basic tool-kit. 3. Check the tires for any wear/tear and cracks. Taking off on a long distance trip with bad tires is just asking for a ruined vacation. Replace both the back and front tires if necessary. Make sure they are properly inflated, remembering that you will be carrying excess luggage. 4. Discuss your itinerary with friends and family members. Even if you are not certain where you will end up, giving someone a general idea of your whereabouts will ease their minds and allow them a general search point in the event of an emergency.
5. Go over maps to select possible routes or destinations and mark petrol stations that fall on the route. 6. Get yourself a wellfitting helmet; do not take this lightly for this is one essential piece of equipment that can actually save your life. 7. Equip the motorcycle with removable saddle bags. 8. Always wear proper riding clothes with protective pads in the back, elbows and knees. Gloves should fit well. 9. Every now and again have a decent break. Stretch regularly - It’s important to do this regularly and to start before you begin to feel sore. Remove your helmet and have a bit of a wander around. Recognize when you're starting to feel a bit tired and stop riding.
It’s liquid engineering
10. Keep a cell phone charged and easily available. This way you can check for messages when you stop for fuel, food or the night. 11. Check the motorcycle over each morning before you head out. This is just for safety reasons. Mechanical failures happen to the best maintained vehicles, so even if you believe everything is fine, go over it quickly to make sure. 12. Be flexible in your plans. If you run across something that strikes your interest, stop and explore. That is part of the fun of a long distance motorcycle trip.
