Husqvarna Motorcycles GmbH is a company that designs, engineers, manufactures and distributes Motocross, Enduro, Supermoto and Street motorcycles. The company began producing motorcycles in 1903 at Huskvarna, Sweden, and is owned by KTM AG. The brand Husqvarna was introduced in Nepal by the same group of people who introduced Ducati and Benelli.

We got an opportunity to talk with Abhinav JB Rana the Director of Husqvarna Nepal and here’s what he had to say about Husqvarna and he shed some light about the brand and their future endeavors.

HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO INTRODUCE THE HUSQVARNA BRAND IN NEPAL AND WHAT IS YOUR STRATEGY BRAND BEHIND IT? We have been in the business of premium motorcycles from the past and had some prior knowledge about the segment with couple of years of experience behind us. Thus we thought to introduce a new premium brand of motorcycle in the Enduro segment and while upon our research in this segment, we found the name ‘Husqvarna’, so we wanted to introduce it. ARE YOU FACING ANY DIFFICULTY TO CREATE THE BRAND IDENTITY IN THE NEPALESE MARKET? The name Husqvarna still has not been known to all the Nepali bike enthusiasts, but the Enduro enthusiasts definitely know about the Husqvarna motorcycles. Our team is dedicating its fullest to create a brand name for Husqvarna in the Nepalese market.

WHAT DO YOU THINK THE NEPALESE MARKET IS LIKE, IT IS VALUE CONSCIOUS OR PRICE SENSITIVE? The Nepalese Market is definitely price sensitive and it makes a big difference while pricing the motorcycles. Our other products are also on its way, the street version motorcycles from Husqvarna. Currently, both the bikes are premium products. So, the strategy of Husqvarna motorcycle is to sell both Enduro and Street bikes. We think that the price will be feasible for the motorcycle in the long run. The actual price of the motorcycle has not been fixed yet but it’s in the pipeline.

ARE YOU PLANNING TO EXPAND YOUR HUSQVARNA SHOWROOM? Immediately, we have not thought about it. But, if the street model arrives and based of the feedback, we can think about expanding not only within the valley but also outside in other cities like Pokhara. HOW IMPORTANT IS THE AFTERSALES SERVICE TO YOU? After sales service is very important and we are immensely focused to provide the best service to our customers. Even though we only have a few units in the market, we are 100% equipped to provide the service to our customers. One of our main engineers stayed in Austria for a month to get appropriate training and to provide better service to our customers.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE USP OF THE HUSQVARNA MOTORCYCLE COMPARED TO THE OTHER’S COMPETITORS IN THIS SEGMENT? I don’t think there are any competitors in the premium Enduro segment. But speaking specifically about the segment, it is light-weight and the components used for the bikes are all top-ofthe-line. As the components used in the bikes are high quality products, it affects in the price of the motorcycle as well. Husqvarna is a premium bike and the market share for this segment is growing rapidly with more and more bike enthusiasts looking for better options. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

The CF Moto’s naked series is doing well in Nepal with products like the 150 NK and the 400 NK. It now plans to add another member to its growing roster in the market, the 250 NK. Crafted by the Austrian-based Kiska Design, the 250 NK looks daunting. the Dragon Ford EcoSport Facelift

AUTOLIFE JAN/FEB 2018

THE

The Ford EcoSport was the pioneer of the compact SUV segment in Nepal way back in 2013. With a product that was bang for your buck and was able to turn heads in a single package, Ford had a golden goose in their possession. This vehicle singlehandedly kick started the craze for compact SUVs and made other manufacturers sit up and take notice. Regarded as the standard for this segment every other compact SUV was compared against the EcoSport and it seemed other manufacturers were overtaking Ford in this segment. Now to make sure it’s golden goose stays alive the company has introduced a much needed comprehensive facelift which it hopes to persuade the public it still is the king of the hill. I say comprehensive because this is not just a simple design change. Along with the change to the front fascia the big headline is the updated and more modernized cabin and the new 1.5 liter, 3 Cyl Ti-VCT Dragon engine. Are these changes enough for Ford to regain the top spot or will the EcoSport will just be an echo of the past.

When you first see the new EcoSport, there’s no doubt that it is the front fascia section that grabs your attention

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE JAN/FEB 2018 25

Exterior When you first see the new EcoSport, there’s no doubt that it is the front fascia section that grabs your attention - simply because of the aggressive new tone. The elimination of the earlier slim grille below the hood made way for the original hexagonal grille to be pushed further upwards which is rather reminiscent of the Ford Mustang. This, combined with the reshaped bonnet, sharper projector headlamps with LED DRLs, larger fog lamps and the elegant alloy wheel design instantly gives it more character. It is the first that a car in this segment gets 17-inchers and they really look good on the EcoSport. The silhouette and the rear section is the same to that of the past, and Ford would have done well to tweak the design here too. The EcoSport has always been a looker and now with the updated design tweaks in line with its international counterparts further elevates the style factor of the SUV.

Interior The key highlight of the interior is the 8 inch touchscreen infotainment system. It gets Ford’s very own Sync 3 tech which is a smooth and quick unit to begin with. Plus, there’s Emergency Assist too. The instrument cluster is also allnew although a little bland. It gets twin dials for speedometer and tachometer each and one monochrome square display in the center that acts as a multi-information display (MID). The MID can be operated by buttons placed on the new steering wheel, which is much easier to use than the stalk-mounted controls in the now past generation vehicle. Overall the quality of the dash has increased tremendously. The EcoSport comes with quite large boot space

Being naturally aspirated the engine is quick to respond to throttle inputs. 26

which can hold up to three medium size luggage with all the seats in place. The rear seats have been raised to overcome the problem of lesser space in the back. The raising of the rear seats makes more space for the legs and also brings the passengers to the level of the windows adding to an airy feeling in the cabin. Rear reclining seats is still present here, but the mechanism to operate it has changed. There are two buttons placed on the shoulder that can be used to recline the seat for convenience. The front seats are now wider and the cushioning is softer than the earlier EcoSport. What’s great is that the cushioning on the rear seats are also as soft as the ones in the front which provides great comfort for all. However, seating three adults in the rear will prove to be a tight fight albeit doable. Overall, the interior has been given an impressive upgrade. Not only have the surroundings become more comfortable but also the tech has gotten smarter. Storage spaces too have been well-designed and the only thing that does fall behind the competition is rear space, which will be bothersome only to tall occupants.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE JAN/FEB 2018 27

Performance One of the strong points of the EcoSport has been its performance, both in terms of powertrain as well as handling. The new model keeps that spirit going, fortunately. The highlight here is the allnew 1.5 litre three-cylinder Dragon petrol engine that develops about 120 bhp and 150 Nm of torque. Being naturally aspirated the engine is quick to respond to throttle inputs. Out on the highway, the engine performs in an impressive manner with a generous amount of torque that kicks in from as low as 1500 rpm. Also driving in stop-go traffic is much easier now due to the lag free engine. Ford has tweaked the suspension to improve the ride quality. This new suspension does a better job of handling potholes and the passengers will enjoy the comfortable ride on the rough surfaces. The EcoSport comes with a high ground clearance of 200mm, which enables it to take on the rough patches without much pain. The steering setup is also slightly different and isn’t as sharp as before. They have toned down the sharpness of the steering but it doesn’t hamper the driving experience. On the whole, the EcoSport continues with Ford’s tradition of making cars that handle well.

Verdict The EcoSport is back with a bang and now with new updates and better list of equipment, it can go toe-to-toe with its competitors. Its facelift is a much needed shot in the arm for the EcoSport and Ford is clearly aiming at winning back its crown in the compact SUV segment. The refreshed version takes care of all the styling woes and feels a lot more competent and modern. The new 1.5-litre petrol engine feels nice, and the suspension setup offers a better balance now, making the EcoSport even more likeable as an urban SUV.

The EcoSport is back with a bang and now with new updates and better list of equipment, it can go toe-to-toe with its competitors.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift has developed a cult following and is constantly one of India’s best selling cars every year. In a sense it has become a quintessential hatchback for people who want a complete package in a reliable and trusted brand. With such big shoes to fill and the design of the car starting to feel outdated, Maruti Suzuki has not played it safe this year and have gone all out in the new generation of the Swift with improvements in every department from styling to performance

The new Maruti Suzuki Swift Facelift is redesigned with sharp styling, and the dimensional features, such as length, breadth, height and wheelbase, are also expected to change. The Swift is based on Suzuki’s new Heartect platform, which also is used in cars like the Baleno and the Ignis. It is lighter than the previous platform and more rigid which, according to Suzuki, enhances “fundamental vehicle performance”. The new Suzuki Swift is 10mm shorter than the older car, but the wheelbase has gone up by 20mm. Considering that the older model was infamous for its crammed rear knee room, this increase in wheelbase could be a boon. There will be clear improvement in all the aspects of dimensions with additionally, boot space has gone up too by 54 liters, giving it a total capacity of 265 liters. The new car is also 40mm wider, which could translate to a better shoulder room. According to Maruti Suzuki, the new car is 120kg lighter than its predecessor with one of its variants weighing as little as 840kg. The reduced weight will translate into better fuel economy and performance.

feature include projector headlamps, L-shaped daytime running lights and new hatchback exterior door handles. The interior fit and finish, and comfort features will also be improved with new trims and flat bottom steering wheel. The styling will further be improved with sharp-featured bonnet, sloping roof design, new A, B and C-pillars, and window panels with black cladding, giving a distinctive look for the exterior. KIA STINGER AND THE KIA STINGER GT 3.3T

O

One’s mind doesn’t think of Kia when it comes to either luxury cars or even sports cars. Kia aims to change all that with the Stinger and Stinger GT 3.3T. We first saw the Kia Stinger at 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. Since then it has built up quite a degree of hype. This is Kia’s first foray into the performance domain, the Korean OEM having concentrated until now on things like build quality and value for money. Those attributes will certainly win sales, but Kia wanted something with a little more passion, a halo car to get people excited. There are two choices of engine for the Stinger. The base model—which gets a 2.0L (single-scroll) turbo direct-injection four-cylinder engine, which makes 255hp and 260ft-lbs. The hotter variant is the Stinger GT. This replaces the four-cylinder engine with a 365hp, 376ft-lbs 3.3L twinturbo direct-injection V6. It’s the same engine found in the Genesis G90, but in this application it’s carrying around almost 500kg less mass, which makes for a much more performance-oriented experience. In both cases, the Stinger uses an eightspeed automatic transmission, a bespoke Korean gearbox common to other Kias, Hyundais, and Genesises rather than the

ubiquitous ZF 8HP. And you can have a choice between rear- and all-wheel drive. If you do opt for AWD, the car is rear-biased by default but can send up to 50 percent of its torque to the front wheels. Kia says the Stinger’s design was inspired by the fastback grand touring cars of the 1970s, citing the Maserati Ghibli of the era as a specific example. It is quite striking, with a long hood and a short front overhang, a short rear overhang, a fast sloping hatchback profile, and plenty of ducts and spoilers to show its sporty intentions.

As with most Kia products, the Stinger’s infotainment and HVAC layout is an elegantly useful balance of dedicated buttons and screen functionality. The knobs on the audio system control volume and tuning, and two dials on the ventilation system manage cabin temperature. Another knob near the shifter adjusts drive modes. Curiously, there’s no primary knob for the infotainment system, but Kia makes it all work with dedicated buttons. The Stinger further closes the gap to highend machinery with a strong showing of standard features. GT trims include LED headlamps, heated front seats, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, to name a few. Kia’s seriousness in challenging the high-end market showcases itself in the various safety features it provides. The Stinger’s advanced safety features is said to work seamlessly and intuitively. Lane-keeping assist, when coupled with adaptive cruise control, verges on hands-off-the-wheel automation even if that’s not its intent. Continental Associates, the official dealership of Kia in Nepal will surely have a hit in their hands with competitors few and far between in this segment.

AUTOLIFE JAN/FEB 2018

Pioneer MotoCorp has recently been appointed as the distributor of Nissan for Nepal and they have signed an agreement with Nissan Motor Corporation Japan. The agreement allows the company to import Nissan vehicles manufactured in Japan, Thailand and India. We had a chance to talk with Mr. Gyanendra Chand, who is associated with Pioneer Motocorp for the last 3 and a half years as Assistant General Manager. Here’s what he had to say about the new Nissan Terrano which has been highly sought after and has been recently launched in Nepal. www.autolife.com.np

CAN YOU GIVE A BRIEF INTRODUCTION ABOUT THE NEW NISSAN TERRANO? Nissan is a well-known brand in Nepal. And being one of the oldest and trusted brand, we have recently launched the new Terrano. The Terrano is a global product that has sold many units since its introduction in Europe, North America and Japan since its production in 1993. We wanted the Nepalese people to experience the same product. The recent launch of the new Terrano and the attention it received during its launch showed that the decision to bring the new Terrano to Nepal was spot on. We have high expectations that it will have a successful run in the market. AS THE NEW TERRANO IS IN THE COMPACT SUV SEGMENT, WHAT IS ITS USP THAT IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER VEHICLE FROM IN THIS SEGMENT? The compact SUV is a competitive segment and Nissan has 20-25% of the automobile market share. Our USP lies in the reliability, trust, durability and style which Nissan provides. Nissan is the one of the world’s largest manufacturers and the new Terrano being the product of the same company shows all the characteristic that the name ‘Nissan’ has been known for years. Terrano is a proven SUV as it has been in production for many years and has many units in Europe, North America, Japan and others. The New Terrano comes with 22 new features, spacious interior, smarter and bolder looks. HOW MUCH OF THE MARKET SHARE ARE YOU HOPING TO CAPTURE IN THIS SEGMENT? With the new Terrano, we are sure that we will be on the top in this segment. The Terrano, in comparison to our competitors, is a better product, which is available at an exceedingly competitive price, and also has a history behind the name which has proven to be reliable, durable, tough; so we will be at the top in this segment.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

WHAT IS YOUR SALES STRATEGY FOR THE NEW TERRANO? Our sales strategy for the new Terrano is to make it available in the lowest possible price in the Nepalese Market. Not just the new Terrano, we plan to make all of our products, current as well as the future available at the lowest possible price which is beneficial for the company as well as the customers. Pioneer Moto Corp, plans to do the same with another brand it has been associated with, Datsun. HOW FOCUSED ARE YOU IN THE AFTER SALES SERVICE? We are more focused on the after sales service then the actual sales of our products. We are in the process to extend our service stations and are planning to establish a lavish service station in Kurintar. Also, we are planning to open more of our service centers in the Kathmandu valley so we can provide better and quicker services to our customers. Also in our pipeline, we are planning to establish 13 touch points outside the valley where sales, service and spare parts are available all in one place.

Nepalese market at an affordable price, we are planning to introduce different product from the Nissan brand in the long run. Following the new Terrano, in our product line-up we are planning to bring Patrol, Urvan and electric cars like Nissan Leaf, which is one of the bestselling electric vehicles in the world. AS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT ELECTRIC VEHICLES, HOW FEASIBLE DO YOU THINK ELECTRIC VEHICLES ARE IN NEPAL? In the past, electric vehicles were definitely not feasible in the Nepalese market. But, in our current situation, we can hope to see a lot more electric cars than in the past. There are fewer to no power-cuts today and the world is moving towards protecting the environment. And also, as Nepalese market is highly influenced by the Indian market, it also effects on the use of electric vehicle in Nepal. The Indian market is also slowly moving towards eco-friendly vehicles and same might occur to the Nepalese market. With the establishment of more hydropower plants in process, the future for the electric cars in the market seems bright.

Our USP lies in the reliability, trust, durability and style which Nissan provides

T

There was once a time when the cars that came to Nepal were used cars and were very limited in options. With that being said with time the automotive sector of Nepal has reached to a new dimension in the recent years. We are seeing more and more of big name brands and luxury car makers entering our market. And in this review we get behind the wheel of a very special brand that is slowly making its way into our soils and it is none other than Lexus. The Lexus RX350 was first introduced in 1998 and ever since then it has been a very popular choice in the luxury crossover segment. Lexus is the luxury vehicle department of Toyota, a brand that was renowned for its durability and reliability. Toyota was mostly known for commuter vehicles so it created the Lexus brand to cater the luxury segment as well with the same durability and the reliability of a Toyota.

EXTERIOR

The designing team at Lexus had a very difficult choice to make, whether to stick to a sober design and try to attract people with its fairly simple design or do the polar opposite have a very futuristic and crazy design with lots of lines and curves. With the 2016 RX350 they went with the second option and threw in everything that they could think of and boy am I glad that they didn’t stick with the first option. As we have heard before from the famous old quote “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” And it is quite true, the futuristic look will definitely turn heads and demand a lot of attention but some people might not be very fond of it. I however loved the design, there wasn’t a bad angle! It looked

THE LEXUS RX350 F SPORT IS A REALLY GOOD OPTION IN TERMS OF LUXURY AND PERFORMANCE. IT CAN GIVE YOU THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.

equally gorgeous from all directions. The front of the car features a massive signature grill as on the newer versions with a chrome bar running around it and on the lower part of the front bumper. The headlight is very sharp and angular in design with a pointed LED DRL (Daytime Running Lights). The side profile looks very striking thanks to the massive 20 inch allow wheels.it has some strong character lines flowing from the front to the back of the car. The LED taillights wrap around from the sides to the back and are joined by a chrome strip to give it a flowing look. There are twin chrome surround around the exhaust pipes. The RX350 that we tested was an F sport variant and had F Sport badging around the car to let people know about it.

separated from the outer world. The instrument cluster looks like it was brought over from the legendary Lexus LFA. The dials being digital looks very nice while starting up and changes color when you put it in different modes. The infotainment system is stacked on top of the dash in a tablet like fashion. The infotainment system is a touchscreen unit but it has a swivel wheel that can be used to operate the screen too. The seats are ventilated so it can be cooled or heated according to your requirements. Talking about the seats they provide very good support and hold you in place, it is also operated electrically. The sun roof allows more light to enter the already bright cabin. The space in the back seat is very good too, with ample of leg and head room. Plus the RX350 is wide enough to accommodate

INTERIOR:

When you open the door to get in you are welcomed by a gorgeous red leather interior. While in the cabin you get the sense of luxury with all the premium elements used in the making of the interior. There is a panel of wood in the center console that is made by the piano division of Yamaha. You can see the attention to detail that has been put into it, even the volume knob is finished in aluminum. The car is so quiet that you feel

3 people in the back comfortably. The F sport badging continues in the interior as well, there is an F Sport logo on the steering wheel.

PERFORMANCE

The motor powering the RX350 F Sport was a beastly 3.5 liter V6 engine producing 295BHP and 267 pound feet of torque. We started off in the eco mode, which to be honest wasn’t all that exciting to drive. To improve gas mileage a lot of the throttle response was cut down and it was slow to react to your input. So I quickly turned the dial to sport and then to the most extreme setting the sport + and there was night a day difference between the eco and the sport + mode. The response was instant

and the 8 speed automatic that this car comes equipped with was shifting gears a lot quicker. The F sport version comes with an adaptive suspension system that changes its setting to adjust to the drive modes to provide the best possible driving experience. This coupled with a powerful engine meant driving this vehicle would be an absolute joy and it really was. And if you wanted to take things under your control then you can switch the gear to manual mode and shift using the paddle shifters which are very responsive. And to take it up a notch, you can turn the traction control off and lock the center differentials if required.

THE VERDICT

The RX350 F Sport is one of those cars that only the financially well off people can think of buying, priced at NPR. 2,38,00,000.00. But if you are someone who can afford to spend 2+ crores on a car then the Lexus RX350 F sport is a really good option in terms of Luxury and performance. It can give you the best of both worlds.

After launching the SR 150, the company is now ready to launch a new 125cc scooter. The Aprilia SR 125 is the entry level scooter from the Italy’s performance company. This 125cc scooter takes the tried and tested formula of sportiness from the SR 150 and brings it in a smaller package of performance and price. The Aprilia SR 150 came to the market as a powerful and sporty alternative to our conventionally styled 110 CC scooters, and now plans to make the SR more accessible by releasing a 125cc version. The idea is to tap into the 125 cc scooter market, which has more takers in Nepal, and use the SR 150’s aggressive and appealing design to try and generate more sales volume. OWNER’S REVIEW

I’ve had the Tata Tiago for nearly three months now. I have been on long tours in this car and feel this car is more comfortable than my past cars on highways. Even on rough roads the car can take on the bumps and potholes with ease and I’m greatly impressed with its suspension and its ground clearance. Even in high speeds the car is steady and planted on the road which gives a sense of security for the passengers. The car is also well suited for city driving due to its compact size and driving it isn’t as taxing as my previous car. The car is also economical as I felt it is more fuel efficient than other cars. In NADA Autoshow I visited stalls of different brands and had the opportunity to see all the different cars on offer however the Tata Tiago was the car that instantly attracted me because of its great looks. I was also contemplating getting the Tata Tigor but a more compact car suited my needs so I was more partial towards the Tiago. Tata also provided good discounts which made the decision easier for me to buy this car. I have gladly recommended this car to my friends and family and am hopeful they will purchase this car in the future. Overall I am satisfied with my Tata Tiago.

an aggressive headlight. The overall design of the SR 125 remains similar to that of the SR 150’s bodywork but with a few subtle differences. The Aprilia SR 125 will be powered by a 124cc, single cylinder, air-cooled, 4-stroke, 2-valve engine that makes 9.46 bhp at 8500 rpm and 8.2 Nm at 7500 rpm. The transmission will be a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). While these outputs aren’t much by motorcycle standards, they’re still very good by automatic scooter standards. Compared to other automatic scooters in the segments, Aprilias are heavy despite the slender build and styling. The SR150 weighs about 122 Kilograms, and the SR125 should weigh similar. The seat won’t be dual-tone, instead carries a single block shade throughout. The market for the 125 cc scooter have tremendous scope as people only opt for the regular 110 cc scooter so the Aprilia SR 125 can be a game change if it can deliver the same performance as to its bigger sibling the SR 150. In terms of the outer design, the SR 125 has similar traits to that of the SR 150, but for the inner part of the scooter, the SR 125 might not have the same engine of the SR 150 rather it might borrow it from its sister company, the Vespa 125 cc range. Other features include 14-inch alloy wheels, twin-pod headlight, a telescopic fork at the front and a single coil spring at the rear provides the suspension duties while the braking is done by a 220mm disc at the front and the 140mm drum at the rear, however ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) will not be on offer. As for the color options, the Aprilia SR 125 will be available in three color segments: blue, silver and grey. The “SR 125” badging will be displayed on the front apron.

AUTOLIFE EVOLUTION

A History of the Lion Compiled by Anmol Shrestha

Peugeot, a name that evokes a feeling of something exotic and enigmatic and a name that we rarely get it right in the first try has a rich history. A history spanning three centuries which had humble beginnings in 1810 as a family owned coffee mill company to now in 2018 as one of the most renowned car companies in the world. Now we will dive deep into the rich history of how it evolved from a company that first forayed into automobiles with bicycles to multiple car of the year winning brand.

Peugeot has an incredible story, one of the longest and most interesting in the automotive industry. It began life as an industrial manufacturer way back in 1810. Jean-Pierre Peugeot is known as the father and founder of Peugeot. Over the course of his life, he made many forays into industry, firstly with a weaving business, a dye works, an oil mill and a flour mill. His two sons Jean-Pierre II and JeanFrederic converted the family flour mill to a steel foundry and turned their engineering skills to a wide range of steel products. They began making tools, watch and clock mechanisms as well as corset stays, sewing machines and irons. The lion symbol first appeared in 1847 when the Peugeot family were producing steel products. The lion image was used to represent the strength and sharpness of the products – symbolized through the lion’s jagged and sharp teeth. In 1858, the logo was registered as the Peugeot trademark. In 1882 Armand Peugeot, grandson of Jean-Pierre Peugeot introduced his “Le Grand Bi” bicycle, along with a range of other bicycles. With the success of the bicycle business Armand Peugeot became interested in the automobile early on and, after meeting with Gottlieb Daimler and others, was convinced of its viability. Thus the first Peugeot automobile was produced in 1889, a three-wheeled,

50

steam-powered car of which only four examples were made. In 1890 steam power was abandoned as it was heavy and bulky and required lengthy warm up times. They were in favor of a four-wheeled car with a petrol-fuelled internal combustion engine. The car was more sophisticated than many of its contemporaries, with a three-point suspension and a slide-gear transmission. More cars followed, 29 being built in 1892, 40 in 1894, 72 in 1895, 156 in 1898, and 300 in 1899. These early models were given “type” numbers. Peugeot also became the first manufacturer to fit rubber tires to a petrolpowered car during this time. During the First World War, Peugeot turned largely to arms production, becoming a major manufacturer of arms and military vehicles, from armored cars and bicycles to shells. After the war, car production resumed in earnest. During the 1920s, Peugeot expanded, in 1926 splitting the cycle (pedal and motor) business off to form Cycles Peugeot, the consistently profitable cycle division seeking to free itself from the rather more cyclical auto business, and taking over the defunct Bellanger and De Dion companies in 1927. New for 1929 was the Peugeot 201, the cheapest car on the French market, and the first to use the later Peugeot trademark (and registered as such)—three digits with a central zero. The Peugeot system of using three digit names with a central 0 was introduced in 1929. The first facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

digit has always signified the car’s size and the final digit has indicated the generation of vehicle. Soon afterwards, the Depression hit; Peugeot sales decreased, but the company survived. In 1933, attempting a revival of fortune, the company unveiled a new, aerodynamically styled range. They were the Peugeot 202, Peugeot 302, and Peugeot 402. These cars had curvaceous bodies, with headlights behind sloping grille bars, evidently inspired by the Chrysler Airflow. In 1947, Peugeot introduced the Peugeot 203, with coil springs, rack-and-pinion steering, and hydraulic brakes. The 203 set new Peugeot sales records, remaining in production until 1960. The company began selling cars in the United States in 1958, and in 1960 introduced the Peugeot 404, which used a 1,618 cc engine, tilted 45°. The 404 proved rugged enough to win the East African Safari Rally four times, in 1963, 1966, 1967, and 1968. More models followed, many styled by Pininfarina, such as the 504, one of Peugeot’s most distinctive models. Like many European manufacturers,

52

AUTOLIFE JAN/FEB 2018

collaboration with other firms increased; Peugeot worked with Renault from 1966 and Volvo from 1972. In 1974, Peugeot bought a 30% share of Citroën, and took it over completely in 1975 after the French government gave large sums of money to the new company. The joint parent company became the PSA (Peugeot Société Anonyme) group, which aimed to keep separate identities for both the Peugeot and Citroën www.autolife.com.np

brands, while sharing engineering and technical resources. Peugeot thus briefly controlled the Italian Maserati marque, but disposed of it in May 1975. In 1983, Peugeot launched the successful Peugeot 205 Supermini, which is largely credited for turning the company’s fortunes around. The 205 was regularly the bestselling car in France, and was also very popular in

the same market segment, and sold less than 1,000 units. Total sales fell to 4,261 units in 1990 and 2,240 through July 1991, which caused the company to cease its U.S. and Canada operations after 33 years. Peugeot were not able to meet the ambitious target of selling 4 million units annually by the end of 2010 however they pursued new markets, mainly in China, Russia, South America and India. In February 2014 Dongfeng Motors and the French government each bought 14% stake in the company. Since then they were jointly operating three car-manufacturing plants in China and have launched award winning vehicles like the 3008.

other parts of Europe, including Britain, where sales regularly topped 50,000 a year by the late 1980s. It won plaudits for its styling, ride and handling. It remained on sale in many markets until 1998, overlapping with the introduction of the 106 in 1991, and

54

AUTOLIFE JAN/FEB 2018

ceasing production at the launch of the 206, which also proved hugely popular across Europe. In the early 1990s, the newly introduced 405 proved uncompetitive with domestic and import models in

Peugeot also has a racing pedigree that many would envy. Peugeot Sport is one of the most successful winners in rallying, along with Citroën Racing (eight-time WRC winner), by winning five times the World Rally Championship Manufacturer’s Title (1985-1986, 2000-2002), six times the Dakar Rally (1987-1990, 2016-2017), three times the European Rally Championship (2002-2003, 2008), three times the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (2007-2009). TYPE 2 QUADRICYCLE The Type 2 Quadricycle was one of the world’s first petrol-powered automobiles and marked the birth of Peugeot as a car maker. Until that point, it manufactured household items such as saws and chisels, crinoline hoops, salt and pepper mills www.autolife.com.np

and coffee grinders. Hot on the wheels of the Type 2 came the Type 3, the first Peugeot car offered for sale to the public. PEUGEOT 203 Designed to appeal to the new generation of European motorists with money to spend in the post-war years, it bore a striking resemblance to the American cars that were popular at the time. The 203 was available in a range of variants, including an extendedwheelbase estate that was a capable load carrier. It was built at the company’s ever-expanding factory in Sochaux, which was now its main base.

PEUGEOT 404 The company had already experimented with massmarket coupes and cabriolets, not least with the unique folding roof of the Eclipse 401 and 601 that were made in the Thirties. But the 404 Cabriolet took its ambitions to a new level. The car was designed by Pininfarina, and it really was a beauty. It remains a popular vehicle, with pristine examples changing hands for around £40,000. A sound investment in the Sixties, and an even better one now. PEUGEOT 205 This is the big one. Or the little one, to be more precise. Because the 205 was pleasingly compact, while enjoying a massive cult following throughout the motoring world. This car was a genuine classic the minute Peugeot revealed it to the motoring public. Fantastic clean-edged styling, brilliant engines including some

of the earliest hyperreliable diesels for which the company subsequently became renowned. And, of course, the legendary GTI, which sends hearts racing to this day. PEUGEOT 308 If there’s one thing that Peugeot has excelled at over the years, it is making cars that look beautiful, drive brilliantly and are a pleasure to own. The latest-generation 308 fits that description nicely. Awarded European Car of the Year when it launched to the UK in 2014, the 308 does everything extremely well. Its minimalist interior is highly distinctive, incorporating just a handful of buttons to operate the car’s core controls. The exterior styling is similarly eye-catching, with sharp lines that speak of the car’s inherent driveability. www.autolife.com.np

It is becoming increasingly difficult to stand out in the small SUV market. This lucrative market is being populated by more and more manufacturers launching new models and vying for sales. Being the new kid in town can mean one will have to prove a lot before gaining the trust and respect of the locals, SsangYong being the new kid aims to change all that with The Tivoli. The new crossover takes its name from Tivoli, the Italian town near Rome with a reputation for style. The Tivoli compact crossover attempts to push SsangYong sales to a new level. It slots into the hard-fought small crossover market, where a growing glut of supermini-sized cars with SUV styling are battling for sales .The Tivoli is the smallest SsangYong yet and the firm has taken great effort to make it attractive to buyers wanting some style with their purchase.

EXTERIORS

For the general public the design and aesthetic styling can be more important than the raw performance figures, and the Tivoli excels when it comes to design. The Tivoli in terms of aesthetics and design is a well-polished piece of machinery. The metal exterior is sculpted with accents and lines that accentuate a sporty look appropriate for a crossover SUV. Much of the attractive styling is due to its strong and aggressive theme. The nose of the Tivoli features sculpted lines also seen in the car’s muscular front and rear wheel housings. To add to that is the aggressive rear bumper and the 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Beyond the muscular look is balance, achieved by the addition of the centrally-mounted rear fog lamp. The eye-catching projector headlights with LED daytime running lights (DRLs), sloping roofline, distinct C-pillar design and upright taillights make the car standout from the rest. Squint at the front and it has a hint of Range Rover’s Evoque about it.

INTERIORS

Tivoli proves that you don’t have to compromise on space. Unusually for this class of car, you can fit three adults across the back bench easily. Even without sliding the back seats, the boot will accommodate 423 liters of stuff, making the car one of the more useful of its kind. Getting in and out is easy thanks to the raised seating level. For the technophiles, the Tivoli comes with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment that supports AM/FM radio, CD, Bluetooth, Aux, USB and Mirror Link. The screen itself is surprisingly

60

user-friendly and slick; it responds well to finger inputs, and while it’s not the most feature-packed it does enough for most needs. The instrument cluster is also very good with the illuminated dials being easy to read and are finished in a white-red hue. Also present is a multi-information display (MiD) that shows average or instantaneous fuel consumption, outside temperature and tripmeter.

PERFORMANCE

The Tivoli’s engines have been specially developed by SsangYong’s parent company Mahindra and are completely new. It gets a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine. The snappily-named e-XGi 160 1.6-litre petrol unit delivers 128bhp at 6,000rpm. SsangYong fits a six-speed manual gearbox as standard on the Tivoli and has another option for a six-speed automatic in Nepal. The shift is slightly long-winded but it’s positive and with a nice weight to it. Its long gear ratios have been chosen for economy rather than speed. The Tivoli has had some serious investment thrown at it, and it shows. The chassis is all-new, albeit hardly adventurous in its suspension design, with MacPherson

THE TIVOLI IN TERMS OF AESTHETICS AND DESIGN IS A WELLPOLISHED PIECE OF MACHINERY.

struts up front and a space-efficient torsion beam rear end. The suspension does a decent job of soaking up the kind of bumps you tend to encounter on roads and motorways SsangYong’s also introducing a selectable weight steering system with Comfort, Normal and Sport settings. For city streets that greatly vary in traffic depending on the time, the Comfort setting would be best. When out of town, or without traffic, the Sport mode would be a good change especially since it tightens up the electric power steering wheel for a more enthusiastic and professional driving style.

SAFETY

A total of 7 airbags are deployed around the cabin- the most in this SUV class with even a knee airbag which is designed to prevent possible injuries to driver’s knees in the event of serious collision. The Tivoli also has “Electronic Brake Force Distribution” with anti-lock brakes which distributes braking power according to which wheels are braking most effectively at the time. Modern features like Electronic Stability Program and Parking sensors are welcome inclusions here. The Tivoli also has the ISOFIX child seat safety system that helps to give the passengers a peace of mind when travelling with a child.

VERDICT

For starters, it’s very stylish and has a decent engine. There’s plenty of interior space and has top notch safety features. Overall you can put aside your reservations about the SsangYong badge, because the Tivoli is a thoroughly capable small crossover. It won’t win awards for ride comfort or refinement, but you get a lot of space and kit for the price you pay.

AUTOLIFE PRODUCT WATCH

FROM PORTUGAL WITH LOVE

AJP PR4 AND PR5

AJP is a company out of Portugal that specializes in making rather inexpensive trail bikes. The name AJP comes from the initials of Portuguese enduro champion Antonio J. Pinto, who founded the company some 30 years ago. The concept of having an Asian motor in a western chassis isn’t new. BMW, Polaris and lots of others do it. The parts are sourced from all over the world, but the key to the low price is the Asian-made motors. There are a number of different models, including the PR4 and the PR5 which is more of a performance-oriented 249cc off-road bike.

AJP PR5

The AJP PR5 Enduro is where high technology meets Old World craftsmanship. It is hand welded and the frames are painted in Portugal at the AJP factory. Modern features like fuel injection, fully adjustable Sachs fork and shock is available here too. The bike is powered by a liquid cooled, 6 speed, tractable enduro tuned engine and has a class-leading short wheelbase for a very light and nimble handling in the tightest of trails. The fuel tank is translucent to track fuel level at a glance and it is repositioned under the rider’s seat for better weight distribution. Whatever it is that you need for your enduro riding the AJP PR5 has it. You would assume that this would be a good entry-level bike, and it is. The seat height, suspension and motor are perfect for riders who are learning the ropes. But, the bike is more than that. A seasoned expert can take the PR5 on an extreme trail ride and have no complaints. A thermostatically controlled fan will kick in if it’s in the verge of overheating, and all the coolant stays where it belongs.

AJP PR4

The PR4 is the smaller brother of the PR5 and shares many characteristics of its bigger brother. The fuel tank is right under the seat, with the fuel cap embedded on the seat itself, giving it a nice balanced feeling while riding as it actually lowers the gravity center. The chassis is in aluminum and steel, so it is actually pretty solid and light. The whole composition weights 116kg, when ready to go, so if you want to compare with other road legal Enduro bikes, it is about the same weight. About the power train, it’s a 240cc (233cc) 4-stroke 1 cylinder engine, developing 20ps and 18Nm. The PR4 has a 270mm brake disc at the front with a double piston caliper and at the rear there’s a single piston caliper with a 220mm disc. It is also equipped with steel braided brake hoses which ensures the braking feels immediate.

AUTOLIFE WISHLIST

MINI Quintessentially British

Most of us probably saw a Mini for the first time with Mr. Bean and his iconic lime green car, where it was a part of his many shenanigans. Iconic moments like Mr. Bean being late for work and having to get ready while inside the car and improvising to transport a sofa chair to his home has seared into our minds. Thus a preconception of the car as a quirky and fun vehicle had been set among many people all thanks to him. However most of us do not know the origins of the car from a humble two door fuel efficient hatchback to a multiple tour and rally winning car. Compiled by Anmol Shrestha

Today’s Mini is very different to that of the first car. With the ownership of the BMW Group the Mini is bigger and has different variants aimed at different demographics. The origins of the Mini Cooper leads us back to the development of the original Mini by BMC (British Motor Corporation) and designer Sir Alex Issigonis in the 1950s. They developed the Mini in response to a fuel shortage and the need for more efficient city cars. In the 1960s, the rising popularity of the compact Mini led to it taking on its own distinctive identity. During the same period the Mini Cooper was modeled as a special version of the first Mini, with John Cooper of the Cooper Car Company seeing the potential to create a Motorsports version of the car. Thus the Mini Cooper with 848cc engine and Mini Cooper S with 1071cc engine was launched. The car was successful in the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 and 1967 and also had an iconic appearance in the 1967 British heist film The Italian Job. The Mini Cooper had to face some

68

tumultuous times in the 1970s and 1980s as the brand was sold to Spanish and Italian companies. With new models released during this time being designed to mimic the original Cooper and Cooper S, the car and the brand was seen as more of a novelty than progression. By the 1990s, the Rover Group, who owned the rights to the Mini, was bought by the German manufacturer BMW. Even though BMW sold off Rover Group at the end of the decade, they kept the Mini brand and since the year 2000 have re-launched the line with its own take on what a Modern Mini should be. The new cars were built in their plant in Cowley, Oxford, and even though many fans of the original Mini mocked the newcomer’s larger dimensions and faux-historical design, it struck a chord with the general public and was proved to be a huge commercial success. With thousands of different color and trim options available it became a key part of the car’s success as it could be personalized. Sportier Cooper models and a convertible was launched with all new engines and interior but with familiar exterior was launched in 2006. Mini then challenged the idea of what a Mini could be when it launched a sub-compact crossover SUV in 2010 called “The Countryman”. It was the biggest Mini ever and was available with four wheel drive and since has become a huge global success.

THE MINI COUNTRYMAN A subcompact crossover SUV, this was the first car of this type to be launched by Mini back in 2010. With all-wheel drive, spacious seats, great interior and a poised handling this is a pretty good SUV and is also more upscale than those of most other subcompact SUVs. However it’s subpar cargo space can disappoint someone who has to haul a lot of luggage. Similar vehicles in this segment like Hyundai Creta, Ford Eco-Sport, and Peugeot 2008 must watch out if this vehicle enters the Nepali scene. Configuration: 1.5 Liter Overhead Cam, 12-Valve Inline 3-Cylinder Turbocharged Horsepower: 134 hp/ 4400 rpm Standard Transmission: 6 Speed Manual Transmission Fuel Tank Capacity: 60.95 Litres facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

THE MINI CONVERTIBLE Those who love the sun and Mini enthusiasts continue to find this convertible irresistible and rightly so. With a power top that flatly folds in 18 seconds, a gauge called the “Openometer” that keeps track of how long you’ve driven with the top down and with unlimited headroom and a leisurely performance, this convertible is for those who are shopping for a budget convertible. With a new “Rain Warner” feature which alerts you when inclement weather is due this is perfect for the somewhat erratic weather in Nepal. This car if it enters the market will be one of a kind here in Nepal as there are no other convertible cars here. Configuration: 1.5 Liter, 3-Cylinder MINI TwinPower Turbo Engine – Turbo Charging, Direct Injection, VALVETRONIC, Dual Vanos Horsepower: 134 hp/ 4400 rpm Standard Transmission: 6 Speed Getrag Manual Transmission Fuel Tank Capacity: 43.91 Litres

THE MINI HARDTOP 4 DOOR This turbocharged motoring icon with double the doors of a conventional Mini is loaded with premium features and great interiors that is unrivaled. This Mini is built to fit slightly fuller life, with more legroom and storage space – all while retaining its compact only parking access. Powered by a Mini TwinPower Turbo engine, this Mini is zippy, easy and fun-to-drive hatchback that stands out from the crowd. For those who prefer a no-compromise hatchback in similar vein to Hyundai i20, Volkswagen Polo, Suzuki Baleno they would be delighted if it were to be launched in Nepal. Configuration: 1.5 Liter, 3-Cylinder MINI TwinPower Turbo Engine – Turbo Charging, Direct Injection, VALVETRONIC, Dual Vanos Horsepower: 134 hp/ 4400 rpm Standard Transmission: 6 Speed Getrag Manual Transmission Fuel Tank Capacity: 60.95 Litres

Owner’s Review It has been one and a half years since I bought the Skoda Rapid. I am an auto enthusiast and have had other cars from Ford and Toyota, while buying a new vehicle I get my research work on point hence this time I settled with the Skoda Rapid due to its many features. For me this is the preferred vehicle of choice when it comes to long tours. With the Rapid I have traversed Nepal from Kakadbhitta to the east to Butwal and Nepalgunj in the west. Fortunately in these long drives I didn’t face any problems with the car and the trips were completed smoothly.

Muktinath KC Lamichhane Executive Tourist Vehicle Service

One of the features I like from the Rapid is their safety. With ABS, good seatbelts and airbags I have a peace of mind when driving this car. The car is also very economical when it comes to fuel consumption as it gives me great mileage even in the city with lots of traffic. I am also impressed by the customer service provided by Skoda. I think it is far better compared to its other competitors. I have been driving cars of other brands but Skoda’s customer service beats them all. The service is prompt and timely and the staff are also friendly with the customers. Skoda is a brand that not only I recommend to my friends but have personally helped them in choosing the cars of their choice. Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase of the Skoda Rapid.
