It’s like they say, even if you are on the right track you’ll get run over if you just sit there. Which is why change is an inevitable part of growth. Embracing change is just what Skoda has done with the new Rapid. The facelift has been a long time coming, and worth it. Check out the face lifted Rapid in our review of one of the most popular Skodas in town. Another brand that is no stranger to change is Bajaj. The motorcycle juggernaut has earned a reputation of being a notorious trailblazer with their spirited ventures into new segments and this time around they’ve outdone themselves. The Dominar is Bajaj’s new beast that is set out to test the waters on the power cruiser cum naked sport segment. This is their most premium product as of late and we test the massive behemoth here in this issue. While we are on the subject of massive behemoths, we might as well mention that we have the Mistubishi Pajero Sport on test. Also in this issue, we pay tribute to another automotive juggernaut: Toyota. United Traders Syndicate Pvt. Ltd. have been the sole distributors of the legendary Japanese automakers and this year they celebrate their 50th year in the business. To commemorate this milestone we have compiled Toyota’s commendable evolution through the years. There is plenty of other content for the auto-enthusiasts out there: a product overview of the Mercedes E Class, a look into the history of Harley Davidson, the Best of the Geneva Autoshow and so much more. We hope you enjoy this issue. We will be back next month with more exciting content. Until then. Cheers!

HONDA AFRICA TWIN REACHES NEW HEIGHTS A year after its long-awaited and hugely successful return to Honda’s motorcycle line-up, the Africa Twin has reached new heights by breaking the record for the highest altitude reached by a twin-cylinder motorcycle. Scene of the record was the world’s highest active volcano, the Nevado Ojos del Salado – situated between Argentina and Chile – up whose slopes a team of five riders piloted the Africa Twin to a record-breaking 5,965 metres above sea level. Fabio Mossini, enduro champion from Honda’s Sud America race team was the man chosen to reach the new landmark, before further progress was halted by 2 metres of snow.
After five days of acclimatization, and riding standard Africa Twins specially equipped with Termignoni exhaust, revised final sprockets, new Metzeler MC360TM tyres and a range of Honda genuine accessories, the international team completed their ascent within 24 hours. Their route took them – in temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees Celsius – through broken asphalt, gravel, mud, sand and finally stretches of ice pockets known as ‘penitentes’, underlining once again the Africa Twin’s credentials as the best-performing off-road motorcycle in its class.
2017 KTM DUKE RANGE BREAKS COVER IN INDIA The 2017 iteration of KTM Dukes have now hit the Indian soil, and this time around we get, not two, but three of these naked beauties. KTM India has launched the 2017 390 Duke, 200 Duke and the all-new 250 Duke with host of new upgrades in design and technology. The 2017 KTM Duke 390, Duke 250 and Duke 200 start at INR 2.25 lakh, INR 1.73 lakh and INR 1.43 lakh respectively. The 390 Duke has been completely refreshed right from the design to the hardware and now looks much sharper than its predecessor. The 2017 model gets the new full-LED headlamp cluster that comes with an angular design complementing the bike’s profile, as well as a LED tail light and indicators. One of the biggest highlights in this year’s model is the TFT instrument console which is a segment first feature. The all-digital unit comes with a host of information and better output capabilities and also brings phone mirroring technology to the table which essentially allows you to pair your smartphone with the console.
16
AUTOLIFE MARCH 2017
One might confuse the Duke 250 for the bigger 390, as both feature the same frame and the new design, but the 250 doesn’t get the all-LED headlamp setup and it also misses out on the TFT colour display, which are both found on the bigger brother. It also makes do without the ride-by-wire tech present in the 390. Compared to the two big brothers, the 200 Duke has only received subtle changes including new graphics and orange wheels to make it look sportier, wider mirrors, better seating and a revised instrument console and also it is now BS-IV compliant. This year’s model, however, doesn’t receive any mechanical overhauls. It uses the old bike’s single-piece frame and doesn’t get the styling updates like its brothers. Despite the BS-IV compliance, however, you get 25hp and 19.2Nm from the bike’s 199.5cc single-cylinder which is paired to a 6 speed transmission, liquid-cooled, fuelinjected engine, which notably, is still quite a bit more than what the competition has to offer. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

ALTHOUGH THE LAURA HAS BEEN OUR FAVORITE FROM THE CZECH BASED CARMAKERS, THE RAPID HAS BEEN THE TORCHBEARER FOR SKODA IN TERMS OF SALES FIGURES.
Skoda’s bestseller has been the Rapid since its launch back in 2012. Finding its place between the Fabia and Octavia, Skoda’s Rapid was the answer to the growing popularity of the C-segment cars. Although the Laura has been our favorite from the Czech based carmakers, the Rapid has been the torchbearer for Skoda in terms of sales figures. Despite strong competition in the segment from the likes of the Ciaz, Sunny and Vento the Skoda Rapid has been able to hold its own. It’s compact dimensions and spacious interiors have been sought after elements, and it has been a successful combination for Skoda.
S
That might be part of the reason why the popular sedan has received very little changes. However, the Skoda Rapid now has a substantial facelift after five years. Here is the rejuvenated Skoda Rapid that is ready to grace the streets of Nepal.
EXTERIOR
Although Skoda have found their strong suit in conventional designs presented with a touch of class, the facelift has sharpened the aesthetics of the Skoda Rapid, most significantly through its completely new fascia. In line with Skoda’s new design language, the Rapid gets the butterfly grille with chrome accents and long angular headlights. Below the grille sits a redesigned bumper with a honeycombed lower air intake, and fog lamps. Prominent lines run from the logo, through the center of the bonnet to the windscreen. There are no changes to the profile. Both the upper and lower character lines define the persona that Skoda has instilled in the Rapid since its manufacture. Around the back is the lightly redesigned bumper and tailgate-mounted chrome strip. C shaped taillights and boot lid creases give the rear of the facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

into it.
INTERIOR
In terms of safety, it is fitted with automatically-dimming rear-view mirror, cruise control, cooled glove box, climate control, rear AC vent and one-touch power windows. The Rapid also gets ABS and dual front airbags as a standard safety feature on all variants.
The interior of the Skoda Rapid has always been spacious, and that has not changed with the facelift. There is plenty of legroom and shoulder room for all passengers with three grown men in the rear seat. It’s a classic black and beige affair in terms of the cabin hue. We wouldn’t really call the dash extravagant but the subtle simplicity is well executed. However, the absence of the push start button and rear reverse camera will stand out once you get into the driver’s seat. On the dash is the 6.5-inch touchscreen that comes with USB, AUX and Bluetooth support. The triple spoke steering wheel fit well in the hands and get a tilt-andtelescopic adjust with telephony and volume controls integrated

PERFORMANCE
There is little doubt that the Skoda Rapid is a good-looking machine. It is an amalgamation of elegance, class and stylish good looks. And for once, you might get away with judging a book by its cover because the Rapid lives up to everything that meets the eyes. At the heart of the Rapid we were driving was the 1.6L multi-point injection petrol engine. There is little hesitation from the mill to get the Rapid off the line. And with 104 BHP and 153NM peak torque

on tap, you can expect the Rapid to perform well on the tarmacs of Nepal. The five-speed manual gearbox offers short, nice throws, but the clutch is on the heavier side. Suspension duties are undertaken well by the Rapid, making light work of minor road undulations to provide a supple riding experience for the passengers. The low-speed ride is sufficiently absorbent, and only the largest of potholes thumps through to the cabin. Overall stability is top notch making it a great highway cruiser.
VERDICT
Skoda has always been on top of its game in terms of bringing quality products into the market. The models higher up on their lineup such as the Laura, Superb and Yeti have been exceptionally good as well. And with the Rapid, they were able to bring the best of their elegance and luxury into a more affordable package. Nevertheless, Skoda has always been slightly reserved with their styling. The recent facelift though, has brought the Rapid up to speed with competition owing to new additions like touchscreen displays; rain sensing wipers and a cooling glove box. What further sets it apart though is its superior build quality. Things like the way the switchgear feels, the ‘thump’ made by the doors as they shut and the general feeling of robustness you get exudes quality. Similarly, the new façade really upgrades the entire look of the Rapid giving it a chic European appeal. The butterfly grille alone elevates the design language altogether. So what we have here is a tried and tested sedan that has improved to live up to the expectations from the brand name. However, Skoda hasn’t really been frugal with its pricing to undercut its rivals. Nevertheless, this is an important updated product for Skoda and one that puts Skoda back into the mix.

AUTOLIFE EVOLUTION
FROM LOOM TO VROOM
THE EVOLUTION OF TOYOTA Ever since its founding, Toyota has sought to contribute to a more prosperous society through the manufacture of automobiles, operating its business with a focus on vehicle production and sales. Have a look at the company’s progress over the last threequarter century
When a problem occurs, one should ask “why” five times to try to find the source of the problem, then put into place something to prevent the problem from recurring. This was the concept of the King of Japanese Inventors, Sakichi Toyoda. Toyoda was the son of a poor carpenter and had established a Loom Works factory in Shizuoko, a.k.a. the unlikely setting for a legendary car company The Toyoda Automatic Loom Works was a family business that started in. Sakichi’s son, Kiichiro was, however, not satisfied with how things were going on. He watched his mother weave with great effort. The machines back then were the opposite of optimum efficiency. So he set out to improve it, despite his father’s disapproval. Putting in more hours coming up with a design rather than in the carpentry, the old man was discouraging. Yet, the young man moved forward and was finally rewarded for his efforts in 1891 at the age of 24. He patented his first invention a wooden manually operated loom, and for the next three years, he kept working continually making improvements. By 1894 he had invented a machine that would whine yarn onto a reel. This invention led to a profitable company and three years later his hard work paid off again when he invented Japan’s first automatic loom.

With success at hand, shadow of turmoil loomed on the horizon. Recession soon devastated the Japanese economy. Sakichi Toyoda’s unwavering commitment to spending vital funds on research and development was blamed for the company’s poor financial performance in 1910, and was forced to resign from his own company. He lost his factory employees and the rights to many of the machines he had invented. 20 years of dedication and hard work suddenly gone. Deeply depressed, Sakichi Toyoda considered giving up.
Unsure of his future, Sakichi Toyoda traveled to the United States. He was amazed at the industrial advances he saw, but one item in particular captured his attention and ignited a dream, a new vision: the automobile. Inspired by his trip to America, Sakichi Toyoda returned to Japan and began again. With hard work and determination, he formed a new company, “Toyoda Spinning and Weaving”. This new company sold the cloth that it manufactured. With the steady income Sakichi Toyoda was free to once again to perfect his fully automatic loom and dream of building an automobile.
Joining him was his son Kiichiro Toyoda, a young engineer fresh out of college. Kiichiro, like his father, was also a man of vision. He looked up to his father and his will to make every effort to achieve a single objective. Kiichiro’s destiny was to take his vision and build Japan’s first automobile. Sakichi Toyoda’s dream of building an automobile was one that few thought would ever be reached. But that was about to change in 1929. Sakichi Toyoda sold the rights to his fully automatic loom for 1 million Yen, which he offered to his son under one condition: use it all for research on the production of the automobile Kiichiro Toyoda had his reservations, but he put them aside, embraced his father’s dream and took up the challenge. He began the process by visiting the premier automotive manufacturers in America, like his father had, and came back to Japan convinced that he could build an automobile. In a small corner of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works with reluctant family approval and funding, Kiichiro Toyoda and his new team of engineers rolled up their sleeves, and 1930 began the difficult task of building Japan’s first car for the masses. Kiichiro, now more determined than ever to see the vision of his father fulfilled. For the next three years they threw themselves into their work but enthusiasm could not make up for the lack of basic technology and experience. Nor the fact that Kiichiro’s family and management of the company were less than enthusiastic about these endeavors. Toyoda Automatic Loom Works established an automobile department in 1933. By the following year, they had developed Japan’s first prototype automobile engine. In 1935, they accomplished the almost impossible, the creation of Toyoda’s first prototype automobile: the Model A1 conceived designed and built from scratch in just five years.

Toyoda was once again on the road to success, but this time instead of looms making cloth, it was a factory manufacturing automobiles. They now had a new product and a new product name. Toyoda changing the name from “Toyoda” to “Toyota” in Japanese required fewer brush strokes and the Toyoda family liked the way it looked. The following year marked the birth of Toyota Motor Corporation which laid the groundwork for decades of industry leadership. The next step was to set up a network of dealerships all across Japan. The car was an instant success and it soon became clear that another manufacturing plant was needed. To raise the necessary funds, Kiichiro Toyoda sold shares in a new company, “Toyota Motor Company Limited”. The new plant was built in Koromo Japan, now known as Toyota city.
AUTOLIFE MARCH 2017 35
Toyota Motor Company began with great enthusiasm and excitement. By the late 40’s, global events brought Toyota close to bankruptcy and Kiichiro Toyoda was forced to cut workers pay. Two years later, the company closed down two facilities and sixteen hundred workers were asked to resign. Debts continued amount as auto union workers went on strike and bought production to a halt. As a result, Kiichiro Toyoda resigned with the Koromo factory operating at full capacity. Toyota was back on the road to profitability within a few years. They had lost a lot of ground but they were determined to catch up. Eiji Toyoda, Kiichiro Toyoda’s cousin, had been in charge of manufacturing Toyota’s first car. In fact, he was the department’s first employee at the new location. Eiji Toyoda had been given the task of upgrading Japan’s automakers technology. To oversee his plans, he appointed Taiichi Ohno, a section chief of the engine machine shop. Taiichi had begun his career at Toyoda Spinning and Weaving and like Sakichi Toyoda, he had a passion for efficiency. The job of improving Toyota’s productivity was enormous. Taiichi Ohno discovered that the company needed to focus not on the people but on the process. He had been told that American workers were 9 times more productive than the Japanese. The difference was not in the people but in the process. So Toyota had to learn to work smarter, or as Sakichi would say, “Be an innovative and creative thinker.” Together, Eiji Toyoda and Taiichi Ohno examined every aspect of the plant. In the factory, they set up the machines in the order they were used, thus production flowed more smoothly and productivity increased. This system which came to be known as the Toyota Production System was paving the way for the company’s success in the automotive industry. By the mid-fifties, Toyota was the leading japanese auto manufacturer looking for new horizons. Toyota set its sights on the global marketplace. In 1955, Shotaro Kamiya was president of Toyota Motor Sales Company Limited. He had just returned from a visit to the United States where he found a growing number of small European import cars alongside the big Detroit

models. To him, it seemed as if every American family wanted two cars but could only afford one American car. He knew that the time was right for Toyota to come to America because he knew that a more affordable car could be built. The car Toyota would ship was the Toyopet Crown. The company believed international success and acceptance was just around the corner. In 1957, Toyota became a global company when Toyota Motor Sales USA was formed. Within a year, the first dealership was opened in Hollywood, California. The cars were lined up and ready to sell. They waited for the rush of customers that never came. Less than 300 cars were sold the first year. All the dreams and expectations were replaced by failure and frustration. The Toyopet Crown was a good vehicle for the moderate speeds of Japanese roads. But when the Crown got on American highways. it lost power, overheated, and used far too much gas and oil. Committed to success in America, Toyota would not give up. Once again, they had learned a valuable lesson. They would need to build a car specifically for the American road. Overseeing this vital project was Kiichiro Toyoda’s eldest son, Shoichiro Toyoda. It was Shoichiro who implemented what would be known as Toyota’s Total Quality Control. This was to prove an effective measure, not only for the US, but also for other markets.
Thus began the first stage of Toyota’s transformation into a global company. In the 1950’s, the company began to export its vehicles to such geographically diverse locations, as the United States, Brazil, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Thailand. The company’s export strategy was based on the principle of Genchi Genbutsu: Go to the source to find the facts you need to make a correct decision. And so, Toyota did extensive research into the needs of consumers in their various export markets. The result was international success and acceptance.
The introduction of the Corona for the American market brought success that went beyond sales. In 1965, Toyota Motor Company was awarded the Deming Application Prize, a prestigious award given each year to the Japanese company with the most successful quality control system. In 1966, Toyota introduced the Corolla. The company was on the move. The oil crisis of the 1970’s boosted the demand of smaller and more fuelefficient cars. This proved to be a windfall for Toyota which was well prepare to respond to the needs of the marketplace.

Soon another challenge rose. Some countries resisted importing large numbers of cars from foreign manufacturers. They developed localization plans to protect their own auto industry. Manufacturers were required to increase the local content of their vehicles by buying more parts from local suppliers. And so Toyota began to assemble its vehicles overseas rather than exporting finished vehicles from Japan. By the 1980’s, Toyota’s dedication to research, its commitment to total quality control, and its philosophy of Kaizen, or continuous improvement, now placed it in a position to enter the second stage of its development as a global company: large-scale manufacturing in other countries. In 1984, Toyota opened the New United Motor Manufacturing (NUMMI)plant in the United States. It was a joint venture with General Motors. This plant was a golden opportunity to put the Toyota Production System (TPS) to the test outside japan. TPS is built on the philosophy of mutual respect and trust between the management and the employees, and empowerment of team members. At the time, these were fairly radical concepts in the US where adversarial layered relationships had been the norm. NUMMI’s ultimate success set the stage for applying TPS worldwide. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) started operations in 1988. It was the first American plant entirely owned and operated by Toyota. TMMK remains the company’s largest manufacturing facility outside Japan. That same year, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada began building the Corolla and the Kuozui Motors Plant in Taiwan started up. By the end of the 1980’s, Toyota was manufacturing and marketing in a wide variety of countries in every major region of the world. Toyota’s luxury division Lexus was launched in 1989. Since that time, Lexus has rewritten the luxury automotive record books for customer satisfaction and quality. Lexus continues to lead the way in innovation and technology for luxury nameplates. The 1990’s began the third stage of Toyota’s development. A sharp increase in the value of the Yen put Toyota’s exports at a price disadvantage. So the company responded with a new global business plan that included the transfer of even more production overseas, fullscale globalization. The company reformulated its model lineup plan, developing unique models for particular markets and selecting appropriate models for local production. This was accompanied by a large expansion in Toyota’s global marketing distribution and sales network. In 1992 vehicle production began at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, United Kingdom. Two years later, the Joint Venture Toyota saw plants started up in Turkey. 1997 was the startup year for the Toyota Motor Thailand Gateway Plant, and in South America, for Toyota Argentina. 1998 was also the startup year for Toyota do Brasil, as well as Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana and West Virginia plants rounding out a decade of worldwide expansion of manufacturing marketing distribution and sales. The joint venture Toyota Kirloskar Motor Plant was established in India in 1999. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
At the start of the 21st century there was no letup in the globalization of Toyota. Manufacturing plants started up in France, Poland, and Sichuan, China. More production began in China. In 2002, Toyota entered a Formula One works team and establish joint ventures with French motoring companies Citroën and Peugeot a year after Toyota started producing cars in France. Toyota ranked eighth on Forbes 2000 list of the world’s leading companies for the year 2005. The company was number one in global automobile sales for the first quarter of 2008.
In 2007, Toyota released an update of its full-sized truck, the Tundra, produced in two American factories, one in Texas and one in Indiana. Motor Trend named the Tundra “Truck of the Year”, and the 2007 Toyota Camry “Car of the Year” for 2007. It also began the construction of two new factories, one to build the RAV4 in Ontario, Canada, and the other to build the Toyota Prius in Mississippi, USA. The company has also found recent success with its smaller models—the Corolla and Yaris. 18 AUTOLIFE MARCH 2017 37
The 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami led to a severe disruption of the supplier base and a drop in production and exports. Toyota is estimated to have lost production of 150,000 units to the tsunami and production of 240,000 units to the floods. In January 2010, Toyota suspended sales of eight recalled vehicle models to fix accelerator pedals with mechanical problems that could cause them to become stuck. In December 2012, Toyota announced an agreement worth more than US$1 billion to settle a lawsuit involving unintended acceleration in some of its vehicles. In November 2015, the company announced that it would invest US$1 billion over the next 5 years into artificial intelligence and robotics research. In 2016, Toyota invested in Uber.
Toyota has established a common set of values, beliefs and business methods that act as the lifeblood of the company. Collectively they are known as the Toyota Way. The Toyota Way is supported by two main pillars: continuous improvement, and respect for the people. It defines how the people of Toyota perform and behave in order to deliver the company’s values to customers, shareholders, associates, business partners, and the global community. Toda, Toyota is one of the world’s largest automakers. Toyota’s various companies have designing, engineering, manufacturing, marketing distribution, and sales facilities in over 160 countries, employing tens of thousands of associates. Toyota, its dealers, and all other business partners are dedicated to providing the highest level of customer satisfaction everywhere around the world.

Owner’s Review I always had a fascination for Skoda cars because of its European heritage. Hence, I had been eyeing the Skoda rapid for quite some time before purchasing it.
Nishan Ghimire Global FX CEO
The exterior of the Skoda Rapid is stunning helping the Rapid stand out from the competition. Like the exteriors, the interiors are equally appealing. The cabin feels spacious and comfortable. The Rapid has a decent boot-space too. Talking about the ride quality, the Rapid provides an excellent ride quality irrespective of our road conditions. All in all, I have found the Skoda Rapid to be very satisfactory and comfortable. I also don’t have any complaints for the after sales departments because they provide a standard service and all the staff members are decent. I would definitely recommend the Rapid to wanting to buy a luxurious yet affordable sedan.

For half a century, the E Class has done one thing above all: It’s driven the future of driving. It’s set a standard that every other automobile strives to live up to. It’s started trends every automaker rushes to follow. It does things you never imagined a car could do, and raises expectations of what every car should be. Year after year, the E Class shines the way to the future, so that all cars may someday follow. The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the tenth-generation of the business saloon, delivers stylish highlights with its distinct, emotive design and high-grade interior. The new E-Class also marks the world premiere of numerous technical innovations. They enable comfortable, safe driving on a new level plus a new dimension in driver assistance – among other things. All this comes complete with infotainment and control systems offering an all-new experience. Likewise exemplary: a newly developed diesel engine, coupled with lightweight design and record-breaking aerodynamics figures, sets the standard for efficiency in this segment, while a new, optionally available multi-chamber air suspension ensures outstanding ride comfort and driving dynamics. The sum total of its innovations, including the Active Lane-change Assistant which allows the driver to steer into the selected lane as if by magic, makes the E-Class the most intelligent saloon in the business class. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

“ THE NEW E-CLASS IS SOPHISTICATED, CONFIDENTLY STYLISH AND SPORTY.
STYLISH AND SPORTY EXTERIOR DESIGN The new E-Class is sophisticated, confidently stylish and sporty. Its design displays hallmark Mercedes-Benz saloon proportions. The elongated bonnet coupled with a coupé-esque roof flowing into a sensual, broad-shouldered tail end creates an exciting silhouette. The powerfully extended vehicle body is characterised by short overhangs, a long wheelbase, large wheels and taut, welldefined flanks displaying a fresh, stylish and dynamic interpretation of the feature line. All of which allows the E-Class to deliver the perfect take on the MercedesBenz design philosophy: “Sensual Purity”. A powerfully designed front end underscores the status the businessclass saloon aspires to, boasting a different look for each design and equipment line. At the rear end, broad shoulders above the rear wheel arches lend the E-Class its unmistakably powerful character. Single-piece tail lights featuring a two-bar design framed by the vehicle body clearly identify the E-Class as a new member of the Mercedes-Benz saloon family. NEXT-LEVEL INTERIOR DESIGN The interior of the new E-Class embodies the synthesis of emotion and intelligence; poles that are defined by the MercedesBenz design philosophy – distinct forms with a sensual flow to them. Optional extras include two next-generation highresolution displays, each with a wide screen diagonal of 12.3 inches – a first in this segment. Beneath their shared glass cover, the two displays visually conflate into a wide-screen cockpit that seems to be hovering in thin air, creating a central element that emphasises the horizontal orientation of the interior design. As the instrument cluster, this wide-screen cockpit contains a large display with virtual instruments in the direct field of vision of the driver as well as a central display above the centre console. The driver can choose between three different styles to select their preferred design for the wide-screen instrument cluster. In addition, Touch Controls on the steering wheel make their first appearance in a car. Like a smartphone interface, they respond precisely to horizontal and vertical swiping movements, allowing the driver to control the entire infotainment system using finger swipes without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. Further controls for the infotainment system are provided in the shape of a touchpad with controller in the centre console, which can even recognise handwriting, and the LINGUATRONIC voice control system.

There are also direct-access buttons for controlling functions such as the airconditioning system or – in another first – for convenient activation and deactivation of certain driver assistance systems. A new, intelligent graphic design with highresolution visualisations and animations, together with a simplified logic, further enhances this all-new operating experience. At the same time, the occupants enjoy a sensual interior with spacious architecture, which combines the elegance of the luxury class with accomplished sportiness. High-quality materials define the interior style. They include open-pore woods, wood in a yachting look with flowing lines as a contemporary interpretation of inlaid wood and a novel metal fabric. Another Mercedes-Benz hallmark clearly in evidence is the high-quality look and feel created through meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship. The interior lighting makes exclusive use of durable, energy-saving LED technology. The same applies to the enhanced ambient lighting included in the lines. With 64 colours, it offers a host of possibilities for personalisation. A further highlight is the seats. Their ergonomic, sculptural form combines Mercedes-Benz’s hallmark suitability for long journeys with a refined, sporty look, featuring a unique design for each line. NEW DIMENSIONS IN EFFICIENCY: The new E-Class comes with an all-new four-cylinder diesel engine equipped with the ECO start/stop function. Despite having a lower displacement than its predecessor, reduced to around two litres, the new diesel powerplant has an output of 143 kW/195 hp and, when installed in the E 220 d, delivers NEDC combined consumption of just 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres, which equates to CO2 emissions of 102 grams per kilometre – a figure that until now only significantly smaller vehicles have been able to deliver. THE SUSPENSION: HIGHEST LEVEL OF RIDE COMFORT The suspension of the new E-Class offers agile driving pleasure on twisting roads as well as the highest level of ride comfort in this segment. The Saloon comes with facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

steel suspension as standard. Three DIRECT CONTROL suspension systems with selective damping system are available in conjunction with this suspension. Alternatively the new E-Class can be equipped with multi-chamber air suspension all round – the only car in its segment to offer this option. Three chambers of different sizes in the spring struts of the rear axle and two in the spring struts of the front axle make it then possible to control, in three stages, how stiffly the suspension reacts. In this way, the occupants enjoy soft base suspension, and the secure feeling of good handling stability as the speed increases. Furthermore, the highly sensitive and fast-responding AIR BODY CONTROL multichamber air suspension features all-round selflevelling for excellent ride comfort even with the vehicle loaded. The multi-chamber air suspension is supplemented by a continuously operating, electronically controlled damping adjustment system, which adapts the damping at each individual wheel to the current driving situation and road conditions fully automatically. What’s more, a DYNAMIC SELECT switch in the cockpit enables the driver to select from four AIR BODY CONTROL modes: “Comfort”, “ECO”, “Sport” and “Sport+”. The additional “Individual” option allows the vehicle to be configured to suit the driver’s personal preferences. MULTIBEAM LED AND FURTHER HEADLIGHTS: Further highlights of the

optional Driving Assistance package are Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function, Evasive Steering Assist and proven systems that have been further developed, such as Active Blind Spot Assist for instance which can now also warn of the risk of a lateral collision at low speeds. New is the Remote Parking Pilot: for the first time, this system allows the vehicle to be moved into and out of garages and parking spaces remotely using a smartphone app. The new E-Class also sees the world’s first fully integral Car-to-X solution go into series production. Thanks to the mobile phone-supported exchange of information with others, the driver can receive an earlier warning than previously in the event of imminent danger. PRESAFE® impulse side, part of the Driving Assistance package Plus, moves the driver or front passenger away from the danger zone in a sideways direction by way of precaution if a lateral collision has been detected and is imminent. And high-resolution MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, each with 84 individually controlled high-performance LEDs, automatically illuminate the road with a hitherto unsurpassed, precisioncontrolled distribution of exceptionally bright light – without dazzling others. A NEW GENERATION OF INFOTAINMENT: An all-new infotainment generation is making its debut in the E-Class equipped with COMAND Online. Its highlights, alongside the double
display, include the touch-sensitive Touch Control Buttons on the steering wheel and the new, intelligent graphic design of the Multifunction Telephony. It allows mobile phones to be charged and connected to the vehicle’s exterior aerial – with absolutely no need for cables or a telephone holder. The wireless, inductive charging system works with all mobile devices that either support the Qi standard or can be upgraded to it. The charging pad is built into the stowage facility at the front of the centre console. When the “NFC” logo is touched, the system connects the mobile phone to the head unit and the exterior aerials via Near Field Communication (NFC). Telephone calls are then routed via the Bluetooth® hands-free system automatically. NFC also enables using the smartphone as the Digital Vehicle Key. Fitted as standard, the MercedesBenz-developed Frontbass system in the new E-Class delivers a unique listening experience. If the vehicle is additionally equipped with the optionally available Burmester® high end 3D surround sound system with 23 loudspeakers, the occupants are treated to a listening experience reminiscent of the acoustics in a concert hall. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Over the years, the name ‘Mitsubishi’ has been synonymous with the word ‘Reliability’. This Japanese automotive giant has constantly been pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering for over nine decades. Regardless of the competition it faces or the sales number it has been attaining, Mitsubishi has always been able to put out cars that scream quality and durability. This year, however, Mitsubishi’s R&D team has completely thrown out everything they have to completely redesign the Pajero Sport moniker. Mitsubishi is taking the fight to its competition with the new generation Pajero Sport. The question here is, has Mitsubishi hatched the right vehicle? Let’s find out.

EXTERIOR
The Pajero Sport has gone through a complete overhaul with the front-end inspired by the new grill design found in the new Outlander. On the side flanks, we have an inclining body with sleek cutouts for windows that looks agile and more athletic coupled with a sharp angular line that meets with the tip of the swept back tail lights and all this sits on a set of 18 inch alloy wheels which look comfortably at home. Out on the back the addition of a beefy spoiler up top paired with slender taillights that form into a pointed hammerhead shape and a sizeable rear windscreen. With the stature and poise of a mountain cat ready to pounce this is the most striking Pajero we have ever seen.

The machine comes to life with a quick rush of power and before you know it you are already hitting triple digits on the speedometer. The transmission system has been designed to improve performance, efficiency and to get the most from the traction systems. There are more gears, with cleverly spaced ratios between them delivering a smooth ride. In lower gears, the ratio is greater to enhance acceleration. In higher gears, the ratios are

shallower to improve economy and reduce transmission noise. In the twisties the Pajero Sport is nimble disguising its two tonne weight well. The steering wheel feels nicely weighted and responsive which helps it fly around the corners and it does this oh so smoothly, however the sheer height and the mass of the vehicle does result in a bit of body roll which is a given in full sized SUVs. On the offroading side however, the Pajero Sport is a beast, ripping through practically any terrain it encounters. The Super Select II 4WD with off-road Terrain Control System is immensely capable. Pair that with the Independent Double wishbone, coil springs with stabilizer bar on the front and 3-link coil springs with stabilizer bar rear suspension and ventilated disc brakes on all four wheels and active stability and traction control, hill descent control, hill start assist and what you get is a vehicle that is ready to face any sort of terrain head on. Mitsubishi has made no compromises when it comes to safety as this car comes with all the safety features one can think of, Pajero Sport surpasses the requirements for the 5 Star ANCAP Safety rating, the highest category
for safety. The car features Forward Collision Mitigation and Blind Spot Warning, Active Stability Control, Active Traction Control Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Multi-mode Anti-Lock Braking System, Adjustable Speed Limiter, 7 Air Bags and much more.
VERDICT
The Pajero has been the weapon of choice among adventure enthusiasts for a long time now, and by the amount of time we spent with it, we can tell that the Pajero Sport is worthy to shoulder the heritage of its predecessors. It proves itself capable of donning the “Sport” name as it flies through the tarmac and cuts through the corners like butter. And when you take it to places where there are no roads, the Pajero Sport makes its own trails. What happens when Mitsubishi decides to make a car with a feature packed quality build, a fitting design, a powerful engine and a host of latest off-roading technology? You get a reliable machine that carries itself like a beauty on the asphalt and destroys everything on its path like a beast when it’s off the road. And to the potential customers looking for a proper SUV, we can safely say that with the Pajero Sport, Mitsubishi has hatched the right vehicle.

OWNER’S REVIEW
I was thinking of buying a car for quite some time. Then at the right time my friend who is an engineer recommended me the Tata Tiago and said that it has a good monetary value, and is also quite new in the market. So, I went to check it out and the marketing staffs at Tata were very convincing. I used to drive Hyundai Santro and Suzuki Swift, so I have some experiences with other cars as well, however, the Tata Tiago proved to be a very good investment. The Tiago scores big on aesthetics and features. Like the exterior, the interior is equally impressive. The cabin is very spacious and comfortable for every occupant. In comparison to other cars in the market, I would like to rank the Tiago amongst the top. I have already taken the Tiago to four districts outside Kathmandu valley and it was a very supple ride. The best thing is that it returns an impressive mileage without compromising on the performance. The after sales service exceptionally well. I have recommended the Tiago to many of my friends and they are already impressed with it.. The best thing about Tata Tiago is it represents comfort, and if anyone wants that quality, Tata Tiago is the best option to choose.

For the average motorcycle enthusiast in Nepal and India, Bajaj has been the best thing that could have happened to the industry. Whether it is the Pulsar, Avenger, NS, RS, or AS, Bajaj has paved ways for the common man’s motorcycling dreams. They’ve boldly stepped into new segments and they are back to their trailblazing ways with what is their most premium offering yet: the Bajaj Dominar.
F
Bajaj teased the world with the CS 400 in the 2014 Indian Auto Expo. The reveal of the concept motorcycle sent shockwaves through the industry and left us all in anticipation of the biggest, baddest Bajaj. Now, there are bigger machines with fancier badges that would churn just as much excitement amongst audiences, but the fact that this was Bajaj highlighted one crucial factor: Value for Money. The wait has finally come to an end with the launch of the Dominar. What now prowls the streets is a beast that is a powerful amalgamation of a cruiser and a naked sports bike.
STYLING AND FEATURES
There is a brutish menace to the Dominar’s presence that thankfully holds a lot of similarities to the CS 400 concept. It also holds a facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
resemblance to the Ducati Diavel, which really isn’t a bad thing at all. It gets chiseled naked sport like design integrated into a cruiser like stance and a stare that will be the first thing you notice. The LED headlights are striking, to say the least. There are four levels of adjustability to these headlamps that is operated via two separate switches. The one on the right offers an always-on setting that keeps it on a high beam to make the bike more visible in the day. Slide the switch left for a night mode that drops the beam to a lower output that won’t blind oncoming traffic. And on the left grip is a standard high and low beam switch that turns on a separate LED cluster in the headlamp. The headlamps alone are designed to be burly and muscular and that sets the stage for the rest of the Dominar’s stature. Bajaj claims that the headlamp meets European standards, which makes the bike visible from a distance of approximately 1.5 km. The large sculpted fuel tank gets purposeful swooping angles where your knees can fit in properly. Surprisingly, the apparently massive tank only holds 13 liters of fuel, which might hamper the touring capabilities of the Dominar. A noticeable addition on the fuel tank is an additional instrument cluster, much in Ducati Diavel style. There is another instrument cluster AUTOLIFE MARCH 2017 61
that is conventionally placed between the handlebars. The well-lit console displays the rev counter, speedometer, clock, fuel gauge and two trip meters. The one on the tank is slim and houses warning lights like ABS, side-stand down, battery, and check engine. No gear indicator though. Split seats are relatively flat and simple. Move onto the rear and you will notice that there is more inspiration taken from the Diavel that is reflected in the dual led tail lamps. The exhaust is stubby and not the most stylish element on the Dominar. But the belly pan, tank extensions, radiator shrouds and the stylish 10-spoke alloy wheels add to the bike’s muscular look. Overall, the fit and finish quality are top notch, ensuring that the premium feel of the Dominar is not compromised.
ERGONOMICS
Bajaj took it upon them to promise cruising comfort and sporty performance in a single motorcycle. And they have delivered. It has a flat wide handlebar and a low saddle height. The instrument cluster is easily readable, even the slim backlit display ahead of the fuel filler cap; except that this is slightly obstructed when you wear a full faced helmet. The foot pegs are well placed for both a relaxing highway cruise or an aggressive ride through tarmac. Engine heat is well dispersed.
RIDE AND HANDLING
At the heart of the beast is the same

AUTOLIFE MARCH 2017
373.2cc block from the KTM 390 Duke and RC. However, it doesn’t feel as frantic as the feisty KTMs and the exhaust note also differs from the KTMs. Other differences in the Dominar’s engine is that it gets Bajaj’s triple spark plug layout with an SOHC four-valve setup that brings the benefit of lower cost and better bottom-end torque. Also, just so you know, the Dominar is no slouch.
“ IT DOESN’T FEEL AS FRANTIC AS THE FEISTY KTMS AND THE EXHAUST NOTE ALSO DIFFERS FROM THE KTMS. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
It churns out 34.5BHP@8000RPM and 35Nm@5000RPM of smooth linear power delivered through a slick 6-speed gearbox. Twist the throttle and the Dominar will sprint off the line, rev further and it will soldier on with vigor. Power surge might not be ballistic but there is plenty to get a smile on your face. Reaching triple digits is accomplished in a jiffy, and the gearbox uses a slipper clutch to ensure control and pleasure while downshifting in a hurry. As powerful as it is, there are considerable vibrations once you reach and exceed the 4000rpm mark.
We could nitpick on things like suspension, turning radius, and the vibrations but the aggressive pricing set by Bajaj really justifies what the Dominar offers. There is finally a premium motorcycle that provides a big bike feel and that too at an affordable price. However, Bajaj are entering a new motorcycle segment and how people will ultimately react is yet to be seen. But they have ticked all the right boxes and chances are the Dominar will be another feather in Bajaj’s cap.
In spite of being on the heavier side of the spectrum the Dominar carves corners in a way that belies its size. It is stable when you pick up speed on straights and just as pliable on the twists and turns. The suspension is stiff which is terrible for our roads filled with potholes, but that is what makes it so stable on smooth tarmac. However, it should be noted that the turning radius is very small on the Dominar. Stopping duties are undertaken by the best in class disc brakes, the front gets a 320mm disc and a the rear gets a 230mm disc. While braking hard, if the front wheel locks up, one loses the ability to maneuver the bike safely. Whereas if the rear wheel locks up, the stability of the bike is compromised. The Dominar has either situation covered. It is equipped with dual-channel ABS, which means both the front and rear brakes are monitored and controlled separately (instead of a single system). Both wheels have their own sensors and the system controls the braking on each wheel individually. While the Dominar has been getting some criticism on its braking, we felt it was very good at bringing the bike to a stop; even at higher speeds. But you might need to get used to the feel of the rear brakes.
VERDICT
Bajaj got things right with the Dominar. It lives up to its reputation – it is a motorcycle that is as calm as you want it to be and has the potential to be as brutal as you’d ask. And despite its massive size and power, it is rideable in city traffic too.

When I decided that I wanted to buy a new car, I was convinced that I needed to buy a hatchback that would be the best in class equipped with the latest of features at an affordable price, and I must say that Fiat Punto Pure has lived upto my expectations. I have driven Toyota pickups and the Prado in the past and Mahindra bolero too, and I found no flaw in the Punto. I am extremely satisfied with the looks of the car, the interiors of the car are excellent and some of the best you can find among any other brand in the market. From ground clearance to its ability to work in city traffic, Punto just gets the job done. The driving position is very comfortable, and it feels that Fiat has put a lot of work to make sure that their customers have a pleasant driving experience.

The handling and the power of the Punto is also admirable. The body as an aerodynamic shape which gives it better cornering and smooth handling on the highways and also the body has a nice weight to it so it doesn’t shake or rattle in high speed situations, it remains focused and controlled. I am also satisfied with the mileage Punto provides, and my driver is apparently in love with this car. As for the after sales services, the staffs are friendly and cooperative, all the services are provided via latest equipment and skilled manpower, also the company gives me timely reminders for services and checkups. I also found that the management keeps up to date documentation of customers which is relieving to know and their way of responding to the customer’s queries and wishes is heartwarming. I am very pleased with them.

HEAD OF MARKETING, HH BAJAJ

AUTOLIFE MARCH 2017

WITH A MARKET SHARE OF MORE THAN 50%, BAJAJ HAS QUIETLY MANAGED TO FIRE ON ALL CYLINDERS IN THE NEPALESE MARKET. WHAT HAS BEEN THE RECIPE FOR THIS SUCCESS? WHAT OTHER COMPANIES CAN LEARN FROM YOUR SUCCESS? Probably the reason why we are doing well is because we don’t believe in doing what everyone else is doing and we tend to do our own thing. From our promotional activities to the launch of new products in the market, we plan on doing something that adds much value to that event. That makes Bajaj different from other brands.
I have been in the automobile industry for over 5 years now and I have to say that the customer perception has changed a lot during these years. Initially, buying a two wheeler was mostly for convenience or for basic purposes. But, the perception has changed now. Two wheelers have now evolved into more of a style quotient and people are getting more inclined towards higher cc bikes. People who can afford these bikes mostly focus on the displacement range and this is one of the main reasons why the two wheelers business is booming right now.
We really appreciate the initiatives our competitors have been implementing in the market. We have the opportunity to look at what they are doing and learn from them. Although, we are in a competitive market, there is no reason to be disheartened that someone else is doing better than us or be happy that someone has not been able to achieve.
However, I would say that this shift in the consumer behaviour is mostly fixed to major cities like Kathmandu, Dharan and Biratnagar for customers who can afford that lifestyle. In lesser developed areas, people opt for two wheelers to meet their utilitarian and convenience purpose.
Rather than saying what other companies can learn from us, we all need to learn from ourselves and each other in a refined and ethical way. It’s a continuous process. TALKING ABOUT THE RECENT LAUNCHES, HOW WOULD YOU COMPARE THE CHALLENGE OF BUILDING A NEW SUB-BRAND LIKE THE ‘V’ OR ‘DOMINAR’ AS OPPOSED TO SUSTAINING THE LEADERSHIP OF AN EXISTING SUB-BRAND LIKE ‘PULSAR’? While ‘Pulsar’ and ‘V’ are massselling brands with a focus on a larger target group ,‘Dominar’ is a niche brand. Being a niche brand, the ‘Dominar’ caters to a relatively small target segment. Even though there are only a few people who wish to buy a 400cc bike, we are confident that the ‘Dominar’ will be well-accepted in its segment. ‘Pulsar’ on the other brand has a wide range of products which caters to a lot of potential customers. In the case of V, it caters mostly to the middle aged working people and who prefer lower cc section. We are confident that the sales of ‘V’ and ‘Dominar’ will achieve our target slowly and steadily. YOU’VE BEEN IN BAJAJ FOR MANY YEARS. HAVE THERE BEEN ANY SHIFTS IN CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR DURING THIS WHILE? facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
ARE YOUR MARKETING SPENDS DIRECTED TOWARD ACQUIRING NEW CUSTOMERS OR KEEPING OLD ONES? We value both our potential customers and existing customers. It is not possible to ignore one out completely. So, it is unquestionably both. We have activities and events that focus on both. For instance, the Pulsar Dare Venture is directed towards our old customers wherein only Pulsar customers can participate because we want to create a sense of brand loyalty. Likewise, new activations for products are always done for potential buyers. We did a mass launch approximately 2 years back which was open for all sorts of customers for the Pulsar AS and RS. DOES ON-GROUND ACTIVATION PROVIDE BEST RETURN FOR A BRAND OR DO YOU NEED TO COME UP WITH A UNIQUE MESSAGE? I agree that on-ground activation provides a return for a brand, however, all the activation that is done needs to have a purpose, so on-ground activation and creating a unique message goes side by side. There is no point in doing an event that doesn’t serve an objective. Recently we conducted a test drive event of the Dominar where we witnessed amazing number of participation. It was easier for us to mention all the necessary information to the potential customers beforehand.
TWO WHEELERS HAVE NOW EVOLVED INTO MORE OF A STYLE QUOTIENT AND PEOPLE ARE GETTING MORE INCLINED TOWARDS HIGHER CC BIKES. HOW HAS THE RISE OF ONLINE PLATFORMS AFFECTED THE WAY IN WHICH YOU COMMUNICATE WITH CONSUMERS? The rise of online communication has been effective on favour of the brand as well as the customers. This is the age of technology and we need to go with the trend and it is beneficial as well. We can now conduct online and digital marketing campaigns. As compared to other brands, the communication process is fast as compared to other platforms. We also do offline events and it is also very fruitful, but in the age where time is a very important factor to consider, online communication has eased up the process. However, talking about the overall scenario and comparing our online expertise with our parent company, we have been lagging behind and it is going to take a lot of time to get the optimum benefit from online portals. It helps a lot because you don’t have to be confined to one national media which may not reach to various places. COMING TO BRAND BUILDING, BAJAJ CAME UP WITH THE PULSAR DARE VENTURE SERIES AND QUICKLY ESTABLISHED IT AS A SUCCESSFUL REALITY SERIES. WHAT OPPORTUNITY DID YOU SEE IN THERE? Yes, Pulsar Dare Venture has been very successful and we are thrilled that it has picked up the hype and the participation has been major. Youngsters these days are interested in bikes and adventure so by mixing these, we created the Pulsar Dare Venture series. The opportunity we saw in there was that a major section of our target group would be very interested in the series. It helped us to associate with the participants. We have created a bond with the participants. We also get their feedbacks and their participation in other events as well which we are very happy about. AUTOLIFE MARCH 2017 67

HARLEY
DAVIDSON THE EVOLUTION
RE A D T HE 10 0 -PLUS Y E A R S OF T HE H A RL E Y-DAV ID S ON S T O R Y, D E C A D E B Y D E C A D E
The greatest of journeys always have the smallest of beginnings, and as for the “ultimate riding machines” their journey, as stated in the beginning, started in Milwaukee inside a 10 x 15-foot wooden shed with the words “Harley-Davidson Motor Co.” roughly painted on the door 113 years ago. William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson made available to the public the first production Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The bike was built to be a racer, with a 3-1/8 inch bore and 3-1/2 inch stroke, but from what I see, it was built to revolutionize the world.
Three years later, a new factory, measuring 28 x 80 feet, was built on the Chestnut St. site, later renamed Juneau Avenue. Six full time employees were recruited and the first motorcycle catalog was produced. After having scored a perfect thousand points at the 7th Annual Federation of American Motorcyclists Endurance and Reliability Contest in 1908 and in the same year the first motorcycle sold for police duty was delivered to the Detroit, MI Police Department and soon the word of Harley Davidson’s tough motorcycle spread like forest fire. 1909 was a defining year for this six year old motorcycle as it introduced its first V-twin powered motorcycle. With a displacement of 49.5 cubic inches, the motorcycle produced seven brake horsepower…Seven. The image of two cylinders in a 45-degree configuration soon became one of the most enduring icons of Harley-Davidson history. A year later, in 1910 the legendary “Bar & Shield” logo was used for the first time. The F-Head engine was made which became the company’s workhorse for years.
68
AUTOLIFE MARCH 2017

Then in 1912, construction began on a six story building at Juneau Ave. in Milwaukee which served as the headquarters and main factory for the company. Two years later in 1914, the company made its official entry into motorcycle racing and soon earned the tagline “wrecking crew” from fans because of their dominance of the sport.
Just 17 years after the company’s establishment, Harley Davidson became the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world with over 2000 dealers in 67 countries around the globe. 23 speed records were broken on a Harley-Davidson 61 cubic inch racing motorcycle, also during this period; the HD riders took all eight national championships.
Fast forwarding to 1933, the year marked the beginning of usage of graphic designs on the motorcycles, an “eagle” design was painted on all gas tanks, and this design decision was made to give a push to low sales caused by the great depression.
After America dove into World War II, production of all civilian motorcycles came to stop in favor of military production and by the time the war ended HD had produced almost 60,000 WLA models for military use and civilian production was finally resumed.
Time hopping again to 1953; Harley-Davidson celebrated its 50th Anniversary in style. A logo was created, depicting a “V” in honor of the engine which had brought the Company so far. That year the motorcycle world met a new HD called the Sportster which sported a 55 cubic inch overhead valve engine and within a year it became known as the first of the “superbikes” which was the affixing of another gem in the crown.
The year 1960, saw something unusual, the Topper motor scooter was introduced which is the only scooter platform the company ever produced. 60s was the dark decade for the company’s as their success was cut short when it faced competition from Japan and the struggle to keep up nearly got the company into bankruptcy. As a result, in 1969, American Machine and Foundry (AMF) bought Harley Davidson for an undisclosed amount of money. AMF cut down the work force which took a direct hit at the quality of motorcycles produced at the time, a hit so brutal that the motorcycles were dubbed “Hardly Drivable”. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE MARCH 2017 69
Early 70s saw a substantial upgrade in motorcycle production when all assembly operations were moved to a modern 400,000 square foot plant in York, PA. Near the end of the decade saw the launch of FXEF Fat Bob, “Fat” because of the dual gas tanks and “Bob” because of the bobbed fenders, a name that is legendary until today.
80s was a game changer for the company, On February 26 1981; thirteen Harley-Davidson senior executives signed a letter of intent to purchase Harley-Davidson Motor Company from AMF and by mid- June the buyback became official and the phrase “The Eagle Soars Alone” became their war cry. 1987 was the year when the company was listed on New York Stock Exchange.
The FLSTF Fat Boy, which is considered as the modern legend of motorcycle design was introduced in 1990 and in 1994 Harley Davidson showed up with VR1000 which was their idea of a superbike. Most of the 90s was full of construction of new plants and facilities with more than 4 major constructions throughout the decade.
Harley Davidson hit the turn of the century with the introduction of FXSTD Softail Deuce, a treat to riders and motorcycle media everywhere. In 2001, however, Harley Davidson introduced a motorcycle that went down in the history as one of the most beautiful and striking poster bikes even by today’s standards, the VRSCA V-Rod. The V-Rod is Harley-Davidson’s first motorcycle to combine fuel injection, overhead cams and liquid cooling, and delivers 115 horsepower.
70
AUTOLIFE MARCH 2017
During mid-2000s the company appointed Beijing Feng Huo Lun (FHL) as the first authorized Harley-Davidson dealer on mainland China. Later, at the end of the decade the motorcycle company announced its expansion to India and appointed its first dealership in Haryana in July 2010. Today, in the running 2010s, Harley Davidson has a strong lineup for 2017, with the likes of The Road King, The Iron 883, The 2017 Street Glide and the all new Milwaukee-Eight engine. From a company that started in a space smaller than the bedrooms we have today, Harley Davidson Motorcycle Company has come a long way and along the way it has taken the word “motorcycle” and gave it a meaning that is synonymous with the company itself. There are “bikes” and there are “motorcycles” and 11 out of 10 times, a Harley will flash in your mind every time you hear the latter word, and that is what makes this particular evolution beautiful and truly special. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Over the years, it has gained much popularity and has become a ‘must attend’ event for Enfielders to come together once a year to swap bike riding stories and share the road with fellow locals and international riders. While Christians waits for Christmas, Hindus for Diwali and Muslims for Id, Enfielders here in Nepal now eagerly anticipate their loudest and biggest reunion – The Enfield Poker Run. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

all you need to know about 4wd
WHAT? WHY? HOW?
If you own a proper SUV and not one of those oversized hatchbacks that pretend to be one then chances are you are familiar with the term “4WD”. “4WD” a.k.a. 4 Wheel Drive, put simply, is a stumpy lever found on older SUVs or console switch found on the newer ones which activates a mechanism where power is sent to all four wheels of your SUV instead of just the front or rear wheels, now explaining the science behind how power is sent to all four wheels will be a long and boring read on its own so let’s just stop thinking about it here and stick to the basics instead. Regardless of the advancement in automotive technology, all cars that come equipped with a 4 Wheel Drive (4WD) system have 3 basic modes High (2H), 4 High (4H) and 4 Low (4L).
The question here is why do you need 3 modes? • 2H is used for normal road driving. Power is sent only to two wheels usually the rear hence the “2” and the gears are engaged in high ratios hence the “H”, this is the mode that you are using to go to your workplace every day. • 4H is the all-purpose four wheel drive mode used in most cases where you need extra traction like dirt or snow covered roads or hard packed sand. As opposed to 2 wheel drive, all four wheels are engaged and powered by the powertrain. “High” refers to the gear ratio, meaning that the gear ratio is the same as the ratio used in 2 wheel drive. The power provided to the front wheels help in traction, making the vehicle stable in not so stable surfaces. • 4L is mainly used in slower off road situations, sharp inclines and declines; heavily rutted tracks; deep mud and snow; soft, loamy sand; and extremely rocky surfaces and for getting unstuck when things go south. The mode provides maximum traction and power, all four wheels are driven in a low gear ratio which means wheels turn much more slowly per revolution than they would in high ratio, resulting in slower road speed but higher torque, and this in turn helps with the traction and keeps your car planted to the ground during steep ascends and the lower gearing will help with the braking and control during the descends.

Now that you know the what and the why, let’s jump to the part where the drivers screw up the most. How do we get the 4WD working? • There is a stumpy lever that comes in older generation SUVs while the newer ones come with a console switch, they look different but the process of getting it to work is the same. • Once you encounter a terrain that 2H cannot overcome, you must come at a complete stop, put your car into neutral, the transfer to 4H on your lever or switch and then start your engine. If 4H can’t get the job done then, you must come to a complete stop again and repeat the same process while switching it into 4L.
Now that you know the basics, here are a few Don’ts that most drivers take as do’s • Don’t try to make this transition on the fly like how you would go from first to the second gear. Remember the formula: Stop-Neutral-Switch-Start • Don’t be overconfident and deliberately put your car into a rough terrain when there are smoother options. • Don’t waste gas. When you’re in 4WD, you’re spinning a lot more heavy metal. Getting those extra gears and drive shafts up to speed and keeping them spinning take extra energy, which lowers your gas mileage. If you don’t need 4WD, turn it off and save some dough at the gas pump. • Don’t drive faster while on 4WD than conditions allow you’re far more likely to flip and roll because of your higher center of gravity. • Don’t go Fast and Furious on the gas pedal when you are stuck, you will only make situations worse, slow and steady might not be the best way to win the race but it is certainly the best way to get you unstuck. Lastly, don’t and do’s mean DON’T drive on 4WD system on dry pavements. You will break the front axles, shear the differential gears and even break apart the differential case. And we talk from experience. So as soon as you hit dry pavement, shift back into 2WD. Drive safe now.

AUTOLIFE FEATURE
BEST OF 2017 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW Top brands drove out new cars at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Here’s the lowdown from the mecca of global auto shows.
VOLKSWAGEN ARTEON
Volkswagen has a new flagship saloon on the way in 2017. Called the Arteon, it will be the replacement to the outgoing VW Passat boasts rakish five-door coupe styling, a new Volkswagen design language which will now be applied across all the next generation flagship models, and the latest VW infotainment and driver assists. VW’s new 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine generating 276bhp and a 2.0-litre TSI all-wheel-drive model will top the range.
RANGE ROVER VELAR
Range Rover Velar, Land Rover’s 4th model in almost 50 years, it takes its name from the original 1969 Range Rover prototype, sits between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport and is the brand’s most road-biased model yet, offers “luxury, refinement and allterrain capability” never before seen in the midsize SUV segment which is why it has already attracted more pre-orders than any other model in Land Rover history. The Velar will have a pretty wide line-up of engines with three petrol and three diesel engines. All Velars will be four-wheel drive, and all will get an eight-speed automatic transmission. All six-cylinder editions will get air suspension. Land Rover says the Velar will be more capable off road than any of its rivals. Its approach angle can be up to 28.89 degrees, and its maximum wading depth on air suspension models is 650mm.

SUZUKI SWIFT
The third generation swift is topped with a fresh face and more tech and has a kerb weight of just 890kg On the engine and gearbox front, this car will be offered with the 1.2-litre petrol, 1.3-litre diesel and possibly at least one version that will make use of the RS spec 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. The standard 1.2-litre unit is a four-cylinder engine producing 83/115Nm while the diesel (also a four-pot) produces 75bhp/190Nm. Finally the RS variant’s engine will produce 110bhp/170Nm. A fivespeed manual will be standard for all model while normal models will also get the option of an AMT.
TAMO RACEMO
RACEMO is India’s first digitally native, connected, ‘phygital’ experience, crafted in a two-seater sports coupe RACEMO As a core element of its new Passenger Vehicle strategy. Power comes from a compact midmounted turbocharged petrol engine with 188 hp (140 kW) of power and 210 Nm (155 lb.ft) of torque, enough for a sub-six second sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph).
FORD FIESTA ST
With this new Fiesta ST, the biggest news is the shift to a new engine configuration – the hot Fiesta now uses a downsized three-cylinder turbo motor. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo is out, replaced by a 1.5-litre threecylinder turbo. Ford claims the new motor produces 197bhp – 17bhp up on the output of the motor in the outgoing model. The new Fiesta ST will be available in both three-door and fivedoor bodystyles. In terms of design, it cuts a close look to the standard new Fiesta in ST-line trim, but with a slightly more aggressive front bumper and grille, a painted rear diffuser, and exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels. A new paint colour option, Liquid Blue, also appears.

MCLAREN 720S
Say goodbye to the 650S and hello to the new, very clever 720S that heralds a new generation of carbon-fibre chassis, a heavily revised powertrain, and a load of new technology. The topline stuff includes a power output of 710bhp, 568lb ft, 249g/km CO2, 0–62mph in 2.9secs, 0–124mph in 7.8 and 0–186mph (300km/h) in 21.8 seconds. Upfront, the 720’s ‘eye’ looks completely insane, with air ingeniously ducted below the LED headlights. There’s also a madly creative-looking front spoiler, and bonnet gills.
HONDA CIVIC TYPE R
The 2017 Honda Civic Type R gets its power from a 2.0-liter, turbocharged I4. US-spec Output is set at 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, all of which heads to the front wheels by way of a sixspeed manual transmission -- no automatics or CVTs here, yesss. The 13.8-inch Brembo front brakes help bring the car to a stop. This mean hatchback has exaggerated air vents in the front, fender flares on the side and a crazy spoiler out on the back and not two but three exhaust pipes.
ASTON MARTIN VALKYRIE
Think “Formula One car for the road” jointly developed by Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing. The car will be hybrid, merging a 6.5-liter V12 with an electric powertrain. The result will be somewhere north of 1,000 horsepower. And, given the car will weigh somewhere around 1,000kg, that means it’ll have a oneto-one power-to-weight ratio. The Valkyrie is one of those cars that will remain forever out of reach except for a select few. No more than 150 of these vehicles will ever be made.

FERRARI 812 SUPERFAST
The Ferrari 812 Superfast has been revealed as the most powerful series production model to leave Maranello in the company’s 70-year history. The 812 Superfast is powered by a monster 6.5 liter V12 engine that cranks out 789 horsepower and 530 pound-feet of torque. Engineers tweaked the intake and combustion system to maximize the amount of air flow into the engine, which also improved overall efficiency and set a record of 789 Bhp at 8,500 rpm. That oomph propels the 812 Superfast from 0 to 62 miles per hour in a 2.9-second flash. It’s also the first Ferrari made with electric power steering.
ITALDESIGN ZEROUNO
Turin-based design house Italdesign recently revealed plans for a new ultra low production supercar division, and now it’s unveiled its first model at Geneva Motor Show Conference. The new car is named the Italdesign Zerouno. Intended for collectors and visionary enthusiasts, it will be built in only five units. Developed around a modular chassis in carbon fibre and aluminium, this special car boasts a powerful naturally aspirated 5.2 litre V10 engine which enables 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 3.2 seconds, together with a top speed of 330 km/h. The bodywork is entirely in carbon fibre. No prices for the Italdesign Zerouno have been announced, but given the exotic and exclusive nature of the car expect it to be priced well into the hundreds of thousands.
LAMBORGHINI HURACAN PERFORMANTE
With the most powerful 5.2-litre V10 Lamborghini has ever produced sitting amidships, the Performante spits out 631bhp at a whaling 8000rpm, and peaks at 442lb. ft of torque at 6500rpm – though 70% of that muscle is available from 1000rpm. This mighty engine tickles the tarmac via a sevenspeed dual-clutch gearbox and Haldex permanent four-wheel drive system, complete with mechanical limited slip differential at the rear. The raw numbers are 0-62mph in just 2.9sec and a theoretical top speed of 202mph. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
