I have had the Active i20 for just about a year and a half now, and I hadn’t had any prior experience with the car. However, what made me jump on it were the exceptional looks it has. And when I did drive it, I got into the feel of it and really started to appreciate the machine. I live in Budhanilkantha and my work is over at the airport, and some other side business that are scattered around the city, and this car get me to those destinations without a hiccup. This car is great as a city commuter. Apart from the city, I have taken this car to Lumbini, Pokhara, and Dharan. And in those rides, I have not experienced any issues. I have had a comfortable time in all of my rides, both long and short, and have had no problems in terms of maintenance. I say that because Hyundai’s Customer Service is great and I regard it as one of their strongest points. I would recommend the Hyundai Active i20 to anyone and everyone, and I have been doing so ever since I got it. And they have gone to get one for themselves and have no regrets going with my recommendation.

EDITORIAL Hello again, SUVs were all the rage this month, and we had the opportunity to test drive not one but three of them for this issue. IMS Motors recently launched the all new SsangYong Rexton in the Nepalese market and we had a chance to extensively review it all around the capital. SsangYong’s SUV now comes with the ultimate styling, performance, safety and technologies one can expect from a flagship SUV. SsangYong says the new Rexton will re-establish and elevate its brand identity. It seems things are heating up and the luxury SUV game might never be the same again with the arrival of the all new SsangYong Rexton. Also on the review list is the MG GS SUV, a dynamic and sporty SUV produced by the relative new comer MG Motors. With great specifications throughout the range, MG says this is an SUV you and all the family can rely on. Lastly, there is the Tata Hexa, a spacious and stylish feature-loaded 7-seater SUV, which is robust and raring to go. The final month of 2017, as you can see, was certainly filled to the brim with excitement. And to be fair, the whole year was great to be an auto enthusiast as we had a non-stop wave of great cars and bikes hitting the industry. Apart from signifying that the industry is growing, this certainly shows that the coming year will be even better. With that note we would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year, 2018. Cheers!

AUTOLIFE PRODUCT WATCH

THE ŠKODA KODIAQ IS EXPECTED TO LAUNCH EARLY 2018

24

AUTOLIFE DEC/JAN 2017

The Škoda Kodiaq will mark the beginning of Škoda’s SUV campaign in Nepal. With a length of 4.70 m, the seven seat configuration and the largest boot within its class, the Škoda Kodiaq represents the brand’s strengths: a design that is full of character, extraordinary interior space, practical intelligence and innovative technology that can be found in vehicles from higher segments.

www.autolife.com.np

DESIGN: The Kodiaq has a striking design character with its wide, three-dimensional radiator grille combined with the narrow raked headlights which flow seamlessly into the grille, with full-LED technology for the first time. The side and rear views are also crisp: the doors are athletically shaped and the tailgate is expressively sculpted. The split rear lights with LED technology shine in the Škoda-typical C-shape. In the side view, the long wheelbase and short overhangs point to the large interior. It is 4,697 mm long, 1,882 mm wide and 1,676 mm tall (including roof rails); its wheelbase measures 2,791 mm. For the body, a combination of hot-stamped metal sheets forms the ultrastrong backbone. Torsional stiffness, manufacturing precision, drive comfort and crash safety are also superior. INTERIORS: The Kodiaq offers extraordinary interior space. The interior length is 1,949 mm; elbow room is 1,527 mm in the front and 1,510 mm in the rear. Head room is 1,020 mm in the front and 1,014mm in the rear. The interior is characterized by bold vertical elements, such as the four large air vents. The large circular instruments have a precise and clear design. The three-zone Climatronic, which has facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

its own control panel for the rear seats, is another feature often found in higher segments only. In addition, numerous comfort features are available for the front and rear seats. The front seats can be adjusted electrically and includes a memory function. The SUV’s rear seats are extremely versatile: they can be folded in the ratio 40:20:40. ENGINES & TRANSMISSION: The 2.0 TDI generates 150 PS and 340 Nm. On average, the engine returns a fuel efficiency of 16.25km/L. The Kodiaq accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 10.1 s and reaches a top speed of up to 192 km/h. The new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DQ-500 7A) is a variant that has been designed for powerful engines with a torque of up to 600 Nm. The DSG transmission is a very compact construction and enables quick and comfortable gear changing. The all-wheel-drive system with electronic control delivers a big increase in traction, stability and driving safety. The all-wheel drive has an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch which allows the SUV to venture off-road. SAFETY, COMFORT & CONVENIENCE: 9 airbags in the Kodiaq come as standard reiterating Škoda’s strong

emphasis on safety and remains the segment benchmark. The Kodiaq’s state-of-the-art handsfree parking minimizes the hassle of parking in tight spots by automatically selecting an appropriate parking place in a row of parallel or perpendicularly parked vehicles. In today’s crowded cities and spacestarved streets, handsfree parking is a blessing indeed. In addition, the car is equipped with other safety features such as iBuzz Fatigue Alert which detects signs of fatigue in the driver and prompts the driver to take a break. In case of an accident, the Multi-Collision Brake, which comes as standard. RIDE & HANDLING: The large SUV from Škoda comes equipped with Trinity 18-inch wheels. The brakes – with large ventilated brake discs at the front – are strong and stable. When cornering quickly, the electronic differential lock XDS+, which is a function of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), makes handling even smoother and safer. Škoda has also introduced Driving Mode Select function in the Kodiaq. It allows the driver to adjust the operation of the engine and DSG management, power steering, air conditioning and other systems in Normal, Eco, Sport, snow and Individual modes.

Morris Garages (MG) GS 26

AUTOLIFE DEC/JAN 2017

www.autolife.com.np

The MG GS looks like a premium product from all angles.

W

We have found a new love for SUVs in the recent years with most of the car buyers opting for SUVs than other models. Morris Garages (MG) is one of the latest entrants in this hotly contested segment with their all new MG GS. The GS stacks up with models that have become the favorites of the people in this segment such as the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Nissan Xtrail and Toyota Rav4, etc. MG claims the GS has all the oomph to make a mark in this segment. So, does the GS have what it takes to dislodge the top dog of the segment? Let’s find out in this review.

EXTERIOR:

The MG GS looks like a premium product from all angles. The front part of the car makes it quite an onlooker on the streets. From the front, you can notice similarities with its younger sibling –the MG6 sedan. Unlike the most recent cars where the LED DRLs are integrated inside the headlight, the GS’s DRLs are located just under the fog lights. The projector headlights, the big MG logo upfront and the neat grille design lend the GS a very smart and premium look. From the sides, the GS looks compact yet suave with its 18-inch alloy wheels with preinstalled side steps and flared wheel arches. The facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE DEC/JAN 2017 27

confident stance is complimented by the rear design flow. There are two aluminum exhaust tips at each corner of the rear bumper making it look extra sportier.

INTERIOR:

The preinstalled side-steps make it easier to step inside the vehicle, and while entering the GS the black leather seats are the first thing you will notice. The leather seats are comfortable with ample support for any type of body structure. The driver’s seat is equipped with a 6-way electrically adjustable function while the front passenger side features a conventional 4-way manual adjusting function. The other thing that grabs your attention is the piano black finish running along the dashboard and on the center console of the car. The glossy finish looks premium but it can be prone to fingerprint smudges so you’ll have to constantly wipe it to keep it looking shiny and new. In the center of the glossy panel sits a 6.1 inch touch screen infotainment system and just under the infotainment screen is where all the functional buttons are accommodated. The buttons might look a little too intimidating at first but after spending some time with the GS, you will get used to it very fast and having dedicated buttons for different functions make it somewhat easier. The sunroof lets in more light into the otherwise dark cabin. The sunroof can be used in three ways, the first way is where you just open the sun shade with the glass roof still closed just to let in more light into the cabin, or let the passengers enjoy looking

28

AUTOLIFE DEC/JAN 2017

into the skies. The second mode is when the sun roof is tilted open to let a little air to flow in and the third mode is when you completely side the sun roof open. The second and the third option can be done with a one touch dedicated knob between the roof lights. The GS although doesn’t look very big has ample of head room and leg room for the rear passengers. The rear seat provides good thigh support and is a comfortable place to travel long distances. While the boot is of a pretty decent size, the narrow opening limits the size of objects that you can fit in.

PERFORMANCE:

The car we reviewed featured a 2.0 petrol engine which produced a punchy 220 BHP @5000 RPM and 350 Nm of torque between 2500 RPM-4000 RPM. The engine comes paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. You will easily feel the admirable torque figures as soon as you will push the accelerator pedal. The automatic transmission doesn’t hold the same gear for long, hence, to get the most out of this engine, you’ll have to drive it in the manual mode and use the paddle shifter to change gear according to your convenience. The handling has to be the best aspect of this vehicle. The GS being a mid-sized SUV, no one would expect it to be an agile performer, but this car proves otherwise. The GS is very light on its feet and is sharp and fast in changing directions. Steering feedback is excellent. With a slightly stiffer suspension you do lose the softness and its absorption power www.autolife.com.np

“

The handling is the most surprising part of this car, the GS being a mid-sized SUV one would not expect it to be very agile while changing directions.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE DEC/JAN 2017 29

of the bumps, but it does not mean that it is rock hard and will break your back. It is dialed in perfectly where it is plush but it grips the corners very well with minimal body roll which is very impressive.

SAFETY:

MG has decided to fit the GS with a host of safety features emphasizing strictly on the safety of its passengers. The compact SUV comes loaded with 8 airbags, ABS + EBD (Anti-lock Braking System + Electronic Brake force Distribution.), Auto-Hold, Anti-Roll, Hill-Descent Control, Reverse Parking Sensors, Reverse Parking Camera and ISOFIX child seat mount to name a few. The auto hold function makes sure that the car doesn’t move front of back after coming to a complete stop even if you don’t have the parking brake on and have taken your foot off the brake. The anti-roll function comes in handy when you have to climb a hill from a stop; it ensures that the vehicle doesn’t roll backwards. Similarly, the hill descent control takes over the braking task while going downhill so that you can focus on tackling the tough terrain ahead of you.

VERDICT:

MG, a rather new entrant in the Nepalese market has taken the right step to make people notice about their models. What sets the GS apart is that it comes well equipped even on the base variant. So, we wouldn’t be amazed if consumers cocoon out of the stereotypical zones to try the GS. The GS performs great, looks great and has a long list of features that makes it a suitable contender in the dynamic midsized SUV segment.

“ 30

The GS has a very well equipped feature list even on the base models.

AUTOLIFE FEATURE

THE BEST OF 2017 The year 2017 has been a great one. Yes, there were some pit falls, but the year was a good one overall. For the auto industry, it was even better. The auto sector is one of those markets that is constantly growing and trying to up itself. This has to be credited to the huge number of brands coming out with new models. But not all of them are necessarily good, some are better than others, and as blunt as it may be, some are left behind in the competition. The auto industry is a cut throat game, and only a few players emerge as victors. Here’s a list of cars and bikes who won, in the critics’ opinion.

BEST SUBCOMPACT CAR The Scion brand may have been shuttered but the iA lives on under the Toyota banner, and the Yaris IAA is being ushered in on a positive note claiming top honours in the subcompact car category. Nestled under the hood is a smooth and willing 1.5 litre engine that comes paired to the choice of 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions, both of which proved pretty economical overall. Giving the eye a great value is a full-featured infotainment system, and standard low speed automatic emergency braking while it’s well tuned steering and eager handling makes it a surprisingly fun drive. BEST COMPACT CAR Consumer Reports says the redesigned Chevy Cruze is the best compact car of 2017, beating out more popular choices like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. Praise was heaped on the smooth sedan for its hushed ride and roomy interior, as well as its polished and peppy turbo engine. Consumer Reports also netted an impressive 47 miles per gallon on the highway.

OWNER’S REVIEW

I purchased my Tata Bolt on 2074 Baisakh 15 with the full option. At the beginning, I had kept a driver but it’s been 10-15 days that I have been driving by myself. While purchasing, the agents of Tata told me that the full option car provides a better mileage than other cars and the parts are comparatively stronger and cheaper than it’s competitors; this persuaded me to buy the car. I really do feel like I fall under the satisfied-customer category. The ground clearance is comparatively better than other cars and the the body is wider as well. The back passengers can also sit comfortably. I feel like the car is tough as well. While discussing cars with my friends who have other cars, they tell me that they regret not getting the Bolt the moment they get behind the wheels of my car. I haven’t been to a long drive by myself but my family had been to Dhulikhel with my driver. They said that the ride was exceptionally comfortable, and I must echo this claim as well. I have yet to experience such comfort in other cars. The manufactures in Kolkata also gave me a call to give my opinion about the car and they were satisfied with my satisfaction. And I should be no less. The mechanics over at the service center in Kalimati are very cooperative and helpful. They have a good personal relationship with the customers and I never find myself panicking at those rare moments when the car has an issue. The team is more than capable of handling it.

BEST COMPACT HYBRID It comes as little surprised to see the Toyota Prius on this list. Consumer Reports testing saw the gas electric sedan return a combined average of 52 miles per gallon overall which is the highest they have ever recorded in a car without a plug. Not surprisingly the Prius received high marks for its reliability, something Toyota has traditionally been known for. This latest generation model has also had its cabin noise reduced as well as its ride comfort and handling improved.

BEST SPORTS CAR There’s a good reason automotive enthusiasts love the Mazda MX-5 Miata despite having pretty modest output. The Miata is an absolute blast to drive, a trend that continues in the 2017 model. But this thing’s about more than just fun, and the little roadster can be pretty economical too. Consumer Reports says it returned an average of 34 mpg overall, which is better than the compact Cruze.

BEST MIDSIZE SEDAN This year’s best midsize sedan isn’t the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. Both of those extremely popular models were bested by the Kia Optima in 2017. Consumer Reports credited the Optima’s responsive handling, steady ride, and pleasant powertrain with earning the win, as well as its easy-to-use controls and roomy backseat. Add in Kia’s outstanding warranty coverage and it’s easy to see why cars like the Optima are becoming real contenders in segments long dominated by Japanese automakers. BEST FULLSIZE SEDAN When it comes to larger sedans the Chevy Impala easily made its way onto Consumer Reports list thanks to its premium like ride quality and impressive handling chops for its size. it also took place as the top choice for geriatrics everywhere due to its intuitive controls, comfy seats, and roomy trunk.

BEST SMALL SUV Consumer Reports says that the Subaru Forester is its top pick for best small sport utility and we couldn’t agree more. There isn’t a whole lot the Forester doesn’t do well with tons of interior space and a car like ride that’s also rigid when it needs to be. The Forester has also proved to be pretty reliable over the years while its safety record keeps getting better as the brand beefs up its eyesight suite of features.

BEST MIDSIZE SUV The Yaris IA and Prius weren’t the only Toyotas to take home top honors this year with the Highlander earning the nod in the midsize SUV segment. The Highlander receives high marks in all sorts of measurables, including overall performance, fuel economy, long-term reliability, all-weather traction, and interior space. Helping make its case even stronger for 2017 was an update that added more power to its engine as well as new standard safety features. BEST LUXURY SUV Of all the SUVs Consumer Reports tested this year, its top luxury pick for 2017 was the highest scoring of them all. That honor belongs to the seven-passenger Audi Q7, which drives a lot more like a luxury sedan than a sport utility. The cabin is quiet and has all the luxury amenities you’d expect from an Audi with premium trimmings and road trip friendly seats.

BEST COMPACT PICKUP Consumer Reports top midsize pickup of 2017 wasn’t the new Tacoma that earned top honors, or GM’s Canyon and Colorado twins. It was the Honda Ridgeline that was named the best truck of the year in this segment. Get past the complaints that it isn’t a real pickup, which it is by the way, and it was the Ridgeline’s car-like ride and handling that won the day.

Owner’s Review I purchased Skoda Rapid 6 months back. I did my market research on the available options before purchasing a car. The cost of operation, maintenance charge might be high in the opinion of other people but I didn’t experience such problem in last 6 months with Skoda Rapid. My basic requirements were quality, luxury and ease of operation and Skoda Rapid ticked all the boxes. I previously owned Hyundai Santro, and comparatively I found Skoda’s ground clearance to be better. Due to the wheelbase being longer, I was afraid that the ground clearance would not be sufficient but there has been no such problems in Skoda.

Amarendra Bahadur Singha Deputy Superintendent of Police Nepal Police

Till now, Sanga has been my longest drive but I’ve been thinking of going on a longer drive. Diesel car was one of my criteria during my research to purchase a car because we used to live in Sanga a couple of years back, so mileage and economy was in mind for the operational use. And due to the traffic of Kathmandu, I was in search of an automatic car. I didn’t face any problem in the customer service. The staff at Skoda are very friendly and well trained. Even after the purchase of Skoda, there is no such problem and there has not been any problem during the maintenance as well. I have recommended Skoda to my friends and relatives and some of them have liked the Skoda brand as well. It is perfect for me as it fulfills all the requirement of mine but as different people have different requirement it might not been favorable for some depending on their requirement.

BEST SUPER BIKE In a world of super superbikes, the BMW HP4 Race takes it a step beyond. It is in many ways more exotic than those machines raced at the pinnacle of the sport in World Superbike. The 377-pound HP4 Race weighs, for example, only 7 pounds more than the World Superbike-class minimum weight limit, and that’s with a full tank of fuel. Such is the glory of the bike’s carbon-fiber frame, swingarm, and wheels. But the finest components complete this beautiful track-only machine: an Öhlins FGR 300 fork and TTX 36 GP shock, Brembo GP4 PR Monoblock brake calipers, and Forged Pankl rods in an engine that is claimed to make 215 hp.

BEST OPEN-CLASS STREETBIKE The Yamaha YZF-R1 has the best combination of outright performance and rideability in the liter sportbike class. It doesn’t hurt that its sublime crossplane four-cylinder engine makes some of the finest combustion-based music the world has ever heard. About the only thing you might complain about is its racy riding position. But considering what this bike gives you in dynamic capability, you will lean in with a smile every time you ride on road or track.

BEST MIDDLEWEIGHT STREETBIKE Naked bikes like the Triumph Street Triple R came to perfectly embody the modern spirit of the brand. No more are they just some nostalgia flogging name, And while it’s true that the larger Speed Triple defined modern Triumph, it is the light, agile, and accessible Street Triple with its newly enlarged 765cc inline three-cylinder that perfectly expresses the qualities of a modern middleweight streetbike in 2017.

BEST LIGHTWEIGHT STREETBIKE Coming to 2017, Honda is still building great entry-level cruisers. The Honda Rebel 500 is one of the most accessible, fun, and easy-toride lightweight motorcycles on the market. It also happens to be eminently affordable and perhaps the coolest Japanese cruiser you can buy. Make that the coolest 500 cruisers you can buy and a great way to get started riding.

BEST STANDARD BIKE The Aprilia Tuono V4 RR has a surprisingly strong expression of utility, flexibility, definitely, and comfort. It is a great all-rounder. Start with the brilliant engine that makes sound and power to rank it among the best of all time. Add in a supernatural chassis and great electronics and no matter how you ride you will find two-wheeled joy. Every moment riding the Tuono V4 RR is a peak moment. It’s the not-standard standard.

BEST TOURING BIKE From the top-of-the-line CVO Ultra with Twin-Cooled 114 Milwaukee-Eight all the way down to the stripped and stretched Road King, the Harley-Davidson Road King Special is smoother, more flexible, more powerful engine and is coupled with chassis updates that improve ride and handling. Not the fastest means for eating massive amounts of the highway, but one of the most pleasurable and comfortable.

BEST ADVENTURE BIKE The 1090 Adventure R takes the prize as KTM has succeeded in building an adventure bike that can burn up highway miles like a tourer, yet in the dirt works exactly how you’d expect a liter-class enduro bike to perform. Great fuel range, excellent ergonomics, perfect power delivery, and excellent electronic rider aids work on a truly exceptional mechanical package. The 1090 Adventure R hits a sweet spot that somehow covers superslab and single-track trail.

BEST MOTOCROSS BIKE The CRF450R takes it to a new level for Honda’s moto¬crossers. All-new for the first time in five years, this complete redesign gave the bike the slim feel and excellent ergonomics. Suspension is compliant and controlled on jump landings and rough chop for expert riders while being easy for the average person to dial in. The CRF is deceptively fast thanks to broad, tractable power, and the switchable ignition maps widen its adaptability. It works as a complete, wellrounded package with an incredible level of balance.

BEST ENDURO BIKE KTM just keeps on crushing it with the EXC-F line, particularly the 500. What brought the EXC-F back to the top? Was it the improved throttle response and power? Or the more than 10-pound drop in dry weight? The improved suspension? The high-quality components? Yes, it was all of this. Every pound dropped informs this bike’s every move. Why, it even makes it easier to pick up. The KTM 500 EXC-F isn’t just the best dualsport bike ever made; it’s one of the finest enduro bikes in the world.

BEST CRUISER The Bonneville Bobber is a beautiful motorcycle. It sounds wonderful and its 1,200cc parallel twin makes the kind of elemental torque and lope-y music that never gets old. And despite its laid-back cruisy nature, it is a great-handling motorcycle that works surprisingly well on a winding road. It can be called as the Best Good-Looking-Fun-to-Ride-Motorcyclewith-Minimalist-Retro-Styling-Made-for-Cruisingand-Inspired-by-Bobbers, but let’s just stick with Best Cruiser.

The SsangYong Rexton has been in our market for quite some time now but it hasn’t particularly made a splash in the segment considering how tough the competition is as it has to compete against already established Japanese manufacturers. Following Tivoli that has set new standards for the compact SUVs, the launch of all new Rexton has announced SsangYong’s revival of the large-sized premium SUVs with traditional SUV values. As the flagship SUV of SsangYong, the size of the 2017 Rexton has been enlarged compared to previous models, and has been greatly enhanced with a blend of offroad capability, on-road comfort, and refined interior. The all new SsangYong Rexton has a lot to do in order to take over the throne. So are the changes enough to do that?

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

EXTERIOR

The all new SsangYong Rexton excels in the styling department from all quarters. The SUV now looks even more muscular and boxier than before. Built on a new ultra-rigid ‘Quad frame’ body, the new Rexton looks impressive with its sheer presence and dynamic lines enough to command good attention. The dynamic and voluminous front-end employs LED daytime running lights, high-intensity headlamps for better night vision, LED fog lights, positioning lamps and directional indicators. There is a chrome bar that runs high on the grill and slopes down and tucks just under the headlight. The new Rexton also features a welcome feature where the Outside Rear View Mirror (ORVM) folds out while you unlock the car and folds in when you lock it. The locking and unlocking of the new Rexton is made easier with a button on the door handle, this only works when you have the key with you. AUTOLIFE DEC/JAN 2017 49

From the sides, the SUV’s character lines deeply run along the extended body to lend it a beefier look. The rear of the car has LED rear combination side lights, spoiler with high-mounted LED stop light and LED number plate lights. The smooth A-pillar and the wider D-pillar show a contrast to give a pleasant and yet a strong image. From all angles the car is enhanced by the road-owning 18-inch alloy wheels. The new Rexton also has a smart tailgate system that automatically opens the tailgate when the driver with the key is in the rear side of the vehicle for approximately three seconds. This comes in especially handy when you are out shopping and can’t get the key out to open the boot. Furthermore, the power sunroof adds that touch of luxury and lets in extra light into the cabin.

INTERIOR:

The interior has gone through a drastic overhaul and looks nothing like the previous model. Everything about the interior of the new Rexton oozes elegance from advanced climate control and intelligent seating to supervision instrument cluster, keyless start, heated steering wheel and leading-edge infotainment system. The whole approach to the cabin is to simply make everything around the driver feel wonderfully instinctive and refreshingly enjoyable.

While entering the car, the new Rexton will make sure that you won’t step into any puddles or anything similar as the puddle lamp installed under the mirror illuminates the ground. Once inside, you will be generously greeted with quilted black leather trim that looks premium and upmarket. Both the front seats are electronically adjustable but the driver’s seat has more features. There is a memory function where you can save you preferred driving position so that if someone changes the seating position you don’t have to go through the hassle of trying to find the perfect position all over again and you can get back to you position with a press of the memory button. The driver side seat also has the option to move the seat back when you shut down the vehicle to make it easier to get out of the car. The supervision cluster displays an ingenious array of essential information and safety features on a large 7-inch LCD screen. It provides quick, easy access to a whole range of important info. Including a whole range of safety warnings such as lane departure warnings, parking sensors, navigation assist, tyre direction warnings and smart power tailgate warnings. The new Rexton doesn’t just offer real advances on-road and off-road, it also offers them on-screen. The smart audio system comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to connect your smartphone and rear-view reversing camera. It offers excellent connectivity with the mobile device and thus, ensures quality of entertainment and enjoyment while on the move.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

The new Rexton also provides the highest level of passenger convenience and the largest cargo space in the segment thanks to optimized interior space designing. The largest leg rest area in the segment for the rear and a large interior space ensure highest level of comfort for the passenger.

SAFETY FEATURES:

The new Rexton is one of the strongest and safest cars in its class. It’s packed with a whole range of the latest driver assistance safety tech features. It’s built on a newly developed quad frame made of advanced high-strength steel to provide class-leading safety for passengers and features a comprehensive suite of the latest electronic safety aids. The SUV has 9 airbags for maximum passenger protection on impact. These include a knee-airbag for the driver and rear passenger side and curtain airbags - safety features normally only found in prestige vehicles. Another feature is the AntiRollover protection where the car automatically adjusts the brake force while entering a tight turn to prevent the car from rolling over. The Rexton will flash the emergency lights if it is brought to a sudden stop. The brake assist system will help bring the car to a halt by increasing the brake force in emergency situations. Hilldescent control makes it safer while going downhill as the car does the braking for you. Hill-start assist will make sure that the car doesn’t roll back while starting on an inclined surface. It also automatically holds the car in place after coming to a AUTOLIFE DEC/JAN 2017 51

complete stop with having to engage the parking brakes or press the brake pedal (This feature has to be turned on each time the vehicle is restarted.) It also has a tire pressure monitoring system that informs the driver if the tires are not running on optimum tire pressure. In case your tire pressure is not right, the car comes with a tire repair kit take make it easier to replace the spare wheel. Also, the rain sensing wipers start to wipe as soon as it sense rain drops on the windscreen. The new Rexton also takes the safety of children seriously with ISOFIX childseat mountings to the rear outer seats to ensure that child seats are attached firmly and rigidly.

PERFORMANCE:

The new Rexton offers plenty of brawn and brain. It is powered by a 2.2 litre diesel eXDi 220 engine producing 181 PS @ 4000 RPM and of torque from 1600 to 2600 RPMs. This engine is mated to a 7 speed automatic transmission sourced from Mercedes Benz. Although the gear shifts are smooth, at times it takes a while to shift into the right gear when instant power is needed to make an overtaking manoeuvre. Something that I feel is really lacking in such a feature packed SUV is the availability of paddle shifters, having so much of torque on the tap; it would be really nice if paddle shifters were a part of this car to make facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

full use of the engine potential. The otherwise smooth and not so loud diesel engine does get a little bit throaty over 4000 RPMs but it is something one should expect while pushing cars high in the rev band. Most people will be driving this massive beast on the road but if you opt to take it off-road, it is equally capable as well with a host of electronic aids to make your journey easy. The 4 wheel drive system is based on SsangYong’s know-how and experience in the 4WD technology. It also has a rotary dial to select the mode which you want to drive in ranging from 2WD, 4WD L and 4WD H. This can be selected on the fly to make it more convenient. The new Rexton takes every surface in its stride. A smooth combination of double-wishbone suspension at the front and a multi-link independent suspension at the rear enables the car to deliver great ride-quality across a range of terrains - from city roads to serious off-roading.

VERDICT:

The new SsangYong Rexton is priced at Rs. 1, 11, 99,000/- for the manual version while the top spec automatic version is priced at Rs. 1,19,99,000/- This pricing makes it a lot cheaper than the top spec versions of its closest competitors which gives it a real advantage. With all the new changes to make it more premium and plush & with a price tag that is substantially lesser than its rivals, the all new SsangYong Rexton surely makes a strong case for itself! So, if you are in the market for a luxury SUV just above the 1 crore range then the all new Rexton is definitely something that you will have to take a look at!

ROYAL ENFIELD REUNION 2017

Royal Enfield REunion over the years has established itself as one of the most sought after riding terminuses in India, wherein riders regroup and bond over a weekend of pure motorcycling madness. And for the first time ever, the action and rumble made it’s way to Nepal. The Royal Enfield brotherhood has proven strong throughout the world, even right here in Nepal where events like the Poker Run and Rider’s Meet have established the strong camaraderie amongst Royal Enfield riders. However, with the first Royal Enfield Reunion, it was another opportunity to rekindle the bond between these riders. The scene was set at the River Side Springs Resort, Kurintar where riders made their way through the twisties and straights to assemble there.

With a 130 paid participants and 45 staffs including bands, media, support staffs it was a small but perfectly executed event. The three day event that started from the 1st December to 3rd December 2017, saw a line of events and activities that kept the participants pumped. The activities included the classic Royal Enfield REunion competitions like the slow race, tire assembly competition, beer drinking competition, figure it out, carry your bike and the arm wrestling competition. These events had participants scrambling for the finish line heaving their massive motorcycles, then delicately feathering the clutch to stay away from finish line for as long as possible, chugging cold beer, and so much more.

Tata Motors’ signature IMPACT design philosophy dominates the overall styling of the Hexa.

e

Ever since its first showcase as a concept, the Hexa generated a great amount of excitement from the customers. With the recent changes witnessed in the passenger vehicle segment, the timing was ripe for Tata Motors to make an impact in the UV category. The Hexa is a 7-seater vehicle that has specifications of SUVs while it looks slightly like an MPV, the reason behind that is the MPV is based on the Aria platform. So, does the Tata Hexa have what it takes to breakthrough into the luxury segment and ruffle the feathers of the other vehicles that have already made a mark in this segment? We find out.

exterior:

Tata Motors’ signature IMPACT design philosophy dominates the overall styling of the Hexa. The Hexa has a very mean and intimidating front fascia, with big signature honey comb grill with chrome humanity line, smoked projector headlamps that complement the assertive front fascia and ice cube patterned DRLs which is integrated with the fog lights. Dynamic floating roof dominates the sides providing a contemporary SUV silhouette. Although the Hexa rides on best-in-class 19inch alloy wheel, the muscular wheel arches make it look somewhat smaller. The rear end is highlighted by a huge chrome strip running horizontally from one tail light to the other. The tail lamps are rather simple and not very menacing as opposed to the headlights. Tata says the wraparound tail lamps get first-in-India patented flexible LED technology.

The dual tone front and rear bumpers give it a distinct look and from that you can notice how big of a vehicle the Hexa is. The rear has been further provided an insightful touch with chrome accented step plates and twin exhaust.

INTERIOR:

The Hexa sports an inviting all black interiors with superb finishes and soft touch materials, textures and grains. The sculpted seats are quite nice and provide decent amount of support. The driver’s seat can be 8-way adjustable using horizontal, vertical, angular recline and lumbar controls. The 2nd row is available with a bench seat, 2nd & 3rd row is also available with multiple folding configurations releasing a maximum of 671 Litre space. The interior also has retractable blinds for 2nd row windows. Coming to the centre, the dashboard looks neatly designed. Following suit, the Hexa also gets ConnectNext Infotainment System by Harman™ with voice recognition and smartphone integration with ConnectNext app suite. The 10 Speaker JBLTM System gets 4 door speakers, 4 tweeters, a centre speaker, sub-woofer and a power amplifier

to provide an acoustically tuned experience. The Hexa also has ambient mood lighting in which you can choose 8 colours to light up the footwell of the car. The Hexa has big glass panels at the rear so that the third row occupants won’t feel clustered while traveling. Tata has also thought about the comfort of the people seated in the third row as they have included A/C vents even at the rear. The middle row occupants have decent amount of leg room and head room, and there is an A/C vent at back of the center arm rest. The inclusion of third row means the boot space will be compromised, however, the third row can be folded down to fit in more luggages but it does not fold down completely flat so it eats up some valuable space and the same goes with the second row of seats. Another facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

important aspect of the interior is the thoughtfully designed utility spaces for all three rows.

PERFORMANCE:

Powering the Hexa is the tried and tested 2.2 litre diesel Varicor 400 engine that produces 156 BHP of power @ 4000 RPM and a class leading 400 Nm of torque at the range of @1700 -2700 RPM. The engine has been tweaked to make it even better. The engine is very punchy due to the massive 400 Nm of torque available from as low as 1700 RPM but if you rev the Hexa a little high you can feel that the power tapers off in the higher rev band. Also, you will hear significant engine noise while driving at higher RPM.

The Hexa comes equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission which can be a little AUTOLIFE DEC/JAN 2017 69

tough at times because we don’t have the roads to engage the gearbox further. The steering feels heavy in lower speeds but lightens up as you climb speed and this gives you added confidence while tacking bends or twisty. Body roll is minimal but that’s not much of an issue. The best part of the Hexa has to be the first-inclass Super Drive modes where one can easily choose between Auto, Comfort, Dynamic and Rough Road mode depending upon the terrain. The auto mode which rides on 4X4 mode adjusts as per the vehicle’s needs. The Comfort and the Dynamic modes ride on 4X2 mode. The Rough Road mode feels a lot punchier than the other modes and rides on 4X4 mode. Safety features on the Hexa include 6 Airbags, ESP, ABS with EBD, Hill Hold Control and Hill Descent Control, Traction Control System and Reverse Parking System.

VERDICT:

The Hexa can be a solid package for people looking for a vehicle that can easily accommodate more than 5 people without sacrificing on its on-road and off-road capabilities. While most MPVs don’t have a strong off-road prowess and the 7-seated SUVs that do are highly priced, the Tata Hexa rightly fits into the bill. Available at a price of NPR 77.95 Lakhs, the Hexa is available in the XT 4x4 variant across Nepal.

AUTOLIFE ROAD TRIP

FINDING ROOTS THE GREAT INDIAN ROADTRIP The reason why I embarked on this road trip was – I had a penchant for driving on Indian super highways. And what motivated me? Numerous Indian tourists who come to our country to enjoy our scenic landscape - be it for religious or any other purpose.

Aditya Sharma, Amrapali Banquet Catering and Events

AUTOLIFE DEC/JAN 2017

As the idea became mature, the first step was to get a road trip permit from the Indian Embassy. I went to the embassy to get it, but to my astonishment, they asked me to deposit Nrs 8 lakhs as a bank guarantee, because my vehicle, a Nissan Navara NP300, was not an Indian made car. Nevertheless, I made the deposit because I had been dreaming about this trip for ages. I asked my good friend Tejendra to accompany

me on this trip and he did with arms wide open. My goal was to reach a small village called Sultana in Rajasthan’s Jhunjuunu district. That’s where my roots are from before my great grandfather moved to Nepal a couple of generations ago. And I had wanted to drive all the way down there. So we had the whole trip planned, maps saved on Google maps (the most important tool one needs), bags packed, snacks kept at a reachable distance, gassed up the car, kept plenty of water, put on our shades and pressed the pedal. Sadly, because it was 6 in the morning on an autumn day, we had to put off shades back. On the 26th October our journey began from www.autolife.com.np

Kathmandu. We were peripatetic and heading towards another country with a lot of excitement. But it was a mix of feeling however, as there also was a bit of fear within us. We had heard of the Indian road trips, see movies like NH10; we’d hate to meet such a fate. With excitement as our only fuel in our empty stomachs, we had to stop somewhere for a tea break. This made Naubise our very first stop, even though it was not that far from Kathmandu. Eating is something that can’t be neglected. The road up till Mugling was smooth enough, but we knew what lied ahead of us. A disastrous stretch of road of 34 kilometers lies between Mugling and Narayanghat, and those 34kms were the worst of the entire trip. It took us more than 2.5 hours to get through this torturous road. We had to face extremely deep pot holes, lung filling dust, chaotic traffic and innumerable trucks who got too close for comfort. But once that road was over, we didn’t stop until we reached Bhairawa. The road was smooth, yes, but what really motivated was the fact a friend facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

of ours was waiting for us with one of the best butter chickens we have ever had in Nepal, in a restaurant called Bama. Food and road trips have a way of going hand in hand, and this butter chicken was the epitome of scrumptiousness among all the butter chickens. After lunch, we headed towards Sunauli (close to Nepal-India border) and from there our destination was Varanasi. It was the occasion of Chhath Puja, so the road was filled with devotees. This also meant that we were stuck in traffic for quite a bit. But fortunately, we reached Varanasi at 1 a.m., as we had planned, travelling via Gorakhpur. Thank you, Google Maps. The road from Gorakhpur to Varanasi wasn’t that great either. A lot of bumps and uneven gravel made the travel tiresome. After this hectic drive, we finally reached a hotel in Varanasi. Varanasi, also Banaras, is a significant city when it comes to Hinduism. It has the holy river Ganga flowing through it, and is also home to one of the most religiously important temples of Lord Shiva, the Kashi Vishwanath. One simply cannot go to Banaras and not have the world famous Paan. It melts right away in the mouth it leaves a refreshing after taste, something I had not experienced before. Also famous are the Chaats, which I felt were a bit exaggerated, but was still better than a lot of Chaats I have had. And how could anyone come to Banaras and not wash away their sins. Not that I am a sinner, but I couldn’t take any chances. We took a quick dip in the holy river and went off to our next destination, Agra. The beautiful Taj Mahal was on the horizon as we headed towards our hotel. Magnificent and grand in its beauty, the monument is one of the seven wonders.

A friend of mine owns a hotel in Agra called the Howard Plaza - The Fern; a great hotel right in the heart of the city with amazing breakfast and lunch. We stayed in the hotel after the long journey that night and dozed off after a couple of rounds at the hotel bar. Next morning, we headed towards the Taj which apparently is walking distance from the hotel. No matter how I try to put it, the grand marble mausoleum will always be undersold. One has to visit it to witness its grandeur and the symbol it stands for, the love Shah Jahan had for Mumtaz Mahal. One more night in Agra and we were off to the capital, New Delhi, via the mighty Yamuna Expressway. This highway was incredible and we were easily cruising at a speed of 140km/hr. A couple of midway stops and tea at a friend’s house in Noida, we reached our destination in no time. Delhi, like we all know, was full of smog, crowd, and traffic. However, the food we got there was to die for. From Karims at Jama Masjid, and the Chola Bhatura in Sitaram Diwanchand, Delhi Club House, Townhouse, and Whiskey Samba, Delhi gives your taste buds divine pleasure at all monetary range. While in Delhi we mostly used Uber to travel within the city or took the Metro to go to far off places, giving our car a break that was long overdue. My sister and mother still live in Ajmer, Rajasthan, as sister’s career took off in Rajasthan itself. And I too studied here for most of my school life. Hence, I have a special attachment to this place, which was also our next destination. Rajasthan has a certain air of mysticism to offer. As usual, we left early in the morning and stopped at Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. The highway was great all through Jaipur, we did not face any obstacles to get there. The amazing lassi at MI Road and the delicious Kachauris at Rawat Sweets is a must for all while traveling to Jaipur. After a night in Jaipur we then headed to my

74

AUTOLIFE DEC/JAN 2017

alma mater – Mayo College, Ajmer. The main building of Mayo College is almost as grand as the Taj Mahal itself as both the buildings are made from marble. The luscious golf course within the school, the beautiful football grounds, and the cricket ground where once an international match had been held, Mayo College’s infrastructure is second to none in all of India. It still has a school museum that’s considered to be one of the best in the world. Mayo, in this regard, is called the Eton of the East for obvious reasons it seems. Ajmer is also popular among the Muslim community as it has the Great Darga Sharif – The mosque that holds the highest respect among all. Mandawa in Rajasthan was our next stop, where the Castle Mandawa is situated. It once was a castle of the city of Mandawa where the Kings stayed but since has been converted into a heritage hotel. The owner, being my class mate during the school days, took utmost care of us in this elegant and regal castle. The beauty of the hotel is indescribable and must be seen with one’s own eyes. At night we gazed at its lights and its grandeur in awe. If anyone is traveling to Rajasthan, a trip to Mandawa is a must. As a bonus, it’s not even then long. Right in the Jhunjhunu district, about 50 kms from Mandawa, is situated a small village called Sultana. This is where my great grandfather migrated from to settle in Kathmandu. I have few vague memories of our small home there. The language spoken here is not Hindi, and other than a few words, I am completely oblivious to the language. I met few of my grandfather’s friends there who were extremely delighted by the fact that someone who left the place to live in another country drove all the way back to his roots. We had some homemade roti and goat meat that they had prepared for us. It was delightful and even the taste of the food had something very Rajasthani about it. www.autolife.com.np

After a few emotional goodbyes, we were finally on the trip back to Nepal. A couple of nights in Delhi, met some old friends and then it was time to go back, via the Nawabi - Lucknow. If the Delhi - Agra - Yamuna expressway was one of the best I had driven on with my car, then the highway onwards from Agra to Lucknow was on a whole new level. I had put my pick-up in cruise control at the speed of 150/kmph, and yet it seemed slow on the open and wide highway. While the dreaded 34kms from Narayanghat to Munglin took us almost 3 hours this time, we were soon doing 60kms homewards. Unlike the mess that was in Banaras, Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, is very beautiful, clean, and organized; despite being in the same state. The roads were wide and traffic rules were followed by the citizens. The one thing that had attracted me to go to Lucknow, was the Nawabi food there. As recommended by a couple of my friends, it was a unanimous decision to go have our dinner at a restaurant called Dastarkhwan in the street of Hazratganj. The galauti kebabs and the chicken masala there were to die for. After the very heavy meal, we finished the dinner by having Shahi Tukra, a dessert for the Royals, as suggested by the name.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Finally we were heading back home, and I couldn’t have been more excited. Apparently after staying out of Nepal for a week, I got homesick. We crossed the same border, via Sunauli and reached Bhairahawa. There was a prompt checking of the car there by the officials on both sides of the border. We decided to stop at the beautiful temple called Shashwat Dham, built by the Chaudhary Group inside their premises of CG Industrial Park. The temple is very beautiful and well maintained. We had dinner at the restaurant of the temple which was clean and hygienic, and we loved every bite of the Nepali food that was served to us. We decided not to stop any longer and right after dinner we headed back to Kathmandu and reached home at around 3 am. The overall experience of driving from Kathmandu to India and was very insightful for me. It was a great experience driving on the streets of another country, especially with a Nepali number plate, which gave a sense of pride from within. Above all the appropriate words to describe the trip, “tasty“ would be it as the food we ate throughout were unique and exciting to our pallets.

8 WINTER DRIVING TIPS TO KEEP YOU SAFE ON ROADS Winter driving presents several challenges to the rider as well as the driver from slippery roads to the mechanical problems. As the winter season has already kicked in, we need to take care of our vehicles as well. Our rides need special care especially in the winter season and proper care of the vehicles can prevent it from breaking down in the middle of the road or not starting at all at when required. We have compiled different tips and measures that people can take to take care of their vehicle and prevent it from breaking down or not functioning properly. It pays to be prepared and here are some measures you can take: • TIMELY SERVICING OF YOUR VEHICLE

The vehicle tends to breakdown more often in the winter season as compared to summer season. So, proper care and regular servicing is required of your vehicle. While giving our vehicle for maintenance, we should specifically mention the problems in the vehicle to the mechanics so that the vehicle does not breakdown in the middle of the road. Do change the parts if it needs replacing because it’s better to spend some money than to be stranded in the road.

• BATTERY

Getting your battery checked up regularly is important in winter because you can simply be stranded in the middle of the road if your car’s or bike’s battery does have enough juice to power up the motor. In case of battery, two things should be kept in mind: First, the battery that started easily in the summer may not have enough juice to do so in the winter. In winter, the engine is harder to start, because the oil isn’t as fluid. And secondly, batteries lose power as the temperature drops.

• PROTECT YOUR CORE

Protecting your core is equally as

82

AUTOLIFE DEC/JAN 2017

important as taking care of your vehicle. The riders need to wear warm clothes. Typically, people should wear wicking base layer shirt followed by an insulating fleece top, then with a waterproof and windproof jacket. For the legs, usually one less layer is needed; people generally wear jeans so it can be covered with wind-shell pant.

• HEADWEAR

For bikers, it is preferable to wear a full helmet, perhaps sized larger in winter to fit over all the insulation to keep their head, ears warm. Riders who wear half helmets feel the cold breeze passing and might discomfort them while riding the bike.

• STEADY DRIVING

The winter roads provide lots of problems to the drivers as well as the drivers, from the slippery roads to the lack of proper visual in the roads. So, steady driving can prevent from any sort of damage to the vehicle or to the person as well. And if you must cover a long distance, calculate the time required to reach the destination in advance and leave for the destination accordingly.

• LIGHTING

is that the sun sets earlier in the day, which means there’s less daylight, especially on your commute home. So, keeping the vehicle’s light in excellent shape, providing the brightest possible illumination they can is important in the winter driving. If the bulb is out, fix it as soon as possible and if your headlights are foggy or yellow, consider replacing them.

• TIRES

The tires should be checked after some intervals. Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping. The tire pressure should be also be examined; driving or riding around with low tire pressure could mean premature tire wear or potential tread separation, which could lead to a major accident.

• PROPER CARE OF THE ENGINE:

Never rev the engine, by ‘blipping’ the throttle, immediately after a cold start. When cold, the engine takes longer to reach the moving parts and so revving the engine needlessly will increase wear rates, as well as wasting fuel. Never run the engine in an enclosed space, the exhaust gases are still poisonous even on the most modern of vehicles.

One major hazard with winter driving www.autolife.com.np
