EDITORIAL ICONIC LEGENDS
B
Everybody loves a legend. In fact, don’t all of us wish to be one! So this issue is our tribute to some of the legendary stuffs in motoring. Let us start with the review of the latest Toyota Corolla which is now available in Nepal. Ever since its launch in 1966, the iconic Toyota Corolla has always been the poster-child for Toyota’s legendary quality, durability and reliability in more than 150 countries. The new model which is in its 11th generation is all set to take on the mantle and continue the name of the world’s best-selling car. After all this is Toyota’s best and most capable Corolla yet. Then there’s the international review of the bobber Yamaha Star Bolt which comes packed with a history of Japanese reliability and innovation. Stripped back and stylish, the Bolt also provides a perfect entry into the world of customization with a host of aftermarket options available. Talking about legends, how can we miss the unbeatable Joey Dunlop, a true racing icon who set an impossible to forget an amazing record haul of 26 victories in the challenging Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. Read more on the man inside these pages on how he easily dominated the TT championship as he blazed past the circuit donning his hard-to-miss yellow Arai crash helmet and straddling on to racing bikes stickered with his favourite number three. Joey Dunlop’s success in the mountain course is something that will live forever and it is incredibly doubtful whether anyone will ever come near his amazing record haul. On the motorsports front, we have featured the upcoming prestigious Isle of Man TT championship as well. It’s a racing spectacle like no other that not only involves great racing skills, but one that requires a lot of bravery to dump the clutch and fly away as the chequered flag is dropped at the start line. Having already claimed the lives of nearly 250 riders in its 107 year history, the IOMTT is one of the most dangerous motorcycle races in the world with racers now averaging speeds in excess of 200kmph in the 60.73kms lap race around the island. And to round off this tribute to everything legendary, we have compiled a story on the evolution of exotic MV Agusta motorcycles as well. An epitome of emotion, performance and speed perfectly clothed in a uniquely desirable design, MV Agusta is an iconic motorcycle brand that has enamoured the motorcycle world unlike any other manufacturer. A leader in terms of both design and performance, MV Agusta has for long manufactured motorcycles that have easily made any biker go weak at the knees. Read more on the history of an exotic brand that has manufactured some of the most performance heavy motorcycles in the world with unsurpassed attention to detail in their design. We hope this issue will be legen…….. wait for it..... DARY !!

AUTOLIFE NEWS: INTERNATIONAL
FORD NAMES MARK FIELDS ITS NEXT CEO Alan Mulally, the man who transformed Ford Motor Co. from loss-making company to a thriving corporation, will retire on July 1 and will be replaced by Mark Fields, the current chief operating officer. Mulally, 68, was trained as an aeronautical engineer. He spent 36 years at Boeing - and was president of the company’s commercial airplane division - when Bill Ford persuaded him to join the struggling automaker eight years ago. Mulally put a stop to the infighting that had paralyzed the company and instituted weekly management meetings where executives faced new levels of accountability and were encouraged to work together to solve problems. It took two years for Mulally to turn the company around, but since 2009, Ford has posted pretax profits of $34.5 billion and its shares have more than doubled.
Fields, 53, has been in charge of Ford’s daily operations since December 2012 and was widely expected to one day ascend to the top job. The change in leadership is taking place about six months ahead of schedule, but Ford said that was based on Mulally’s recommendation that the new leaders were ready. Fields was one of the executives passed over when Mulally got the top job in 2006. When he was named COO in 2012, Bill Ford said Fields’ decision to stay at Ford and learn from Mulally showed a lot of fortitude and has made Fields a better leader.

Additionally, with CO2 emissions of 84 g/km, the Passo now achieves emissions levels 75 percent lower than the 2005 standards established under MLIT’s Approval System for Low-Emission Vehicles, making it eligible for full tax reductions under the Japanese government’s tax incentive program. Thanks to their improved fuel efficiency, the fourwheel drive models are also eligible for tax reductions.

The Passo uses a newly developed, more efficient 1.0-litre engine with a maximum thermal efficiency of 37 percent. This superior level of thermal efficiency was achieved by raising the engine’s compression ratio, optimizing valve timing, lowering friction, and using cooled exhaust gas recirculation and an integrated exhaust manifold and cylinder head. In addition to improved aerodynamic performance and an enhanced regeneration system, the 1.0-litre two-wheel drive models also feature the Toyota Stop & Start System, which cuts off the engine at approximately 9 kmph when slowing to a stop, as standard.

COMMENCAL META HT SX
S
The Meta SX is a 26”-wheeled, 65-degree head-angled SX which could be labeled as a niche product in the market and probably the most popular amongst the Meta range. However, all that fun on the bike came with a hefty price tag. Luckily, the folks at Commencal are introducing the 2014 Meta HT SX, which will be available in Nepal in the coming month. If the same DNA runs through the Meta HT SX as its older brother, the Meta SX, this hard tail bike promises to be a lot of fun. With the META HT SX, Commençal go back to basics. Both inexperienced riders and purists will have a blast with it. In addition to putting their heart and soul into this bike, they put some fun into it (“26er forever”), a slacker head angle (66.5°), added some simplicity (1x9 drive train), made it easier to handle (420mm wings) and added some travel (140mm fork).

AUTOLIFE April/May 2014
Just because it’s a hard tail doesn’t mean you can’t have fun on it. Commencal calls it the “happy bike.” This hard tail gets to be more aggressive and playful, obviously following in its brother’s footsteps. Shredding trails will be something you look forward to doing with the Meta HT SX. With an XFusion Velvet RL suspension fork, Tektro discs, and a 1×9 SRAM X5 drivetrain, the bike is meant to be an entry point for newer riders or a playful addition for more experienced cyclists. It’s a unique bike with a lot of character and style. It’s hard not to want to have a go with this bike. The price of the Meta HT SX is expected to be somewhere around NRs. 1, 40, 000/-. Believe it or not, compared to other bikes in its range, this is a pretty decent price tag for this hard tail. And it’s pink.

It is a known fact that day by day the environmental pollution is increasing due to the emissions from different sources such as industries and vehicles. Poor maintenance of roads, poorly maintained vehicles and public awareness is responsible for the deteriorating ambient air quality in the Kathmandu valley.
The main emission sources of air pollutants are • smoke emitting vehicles of all types • re-suspension of street dust and litter into the air • black smoke plumes from numerous brick kilns • refuse burning BG Nepal has the preventive solutions at least for two sources of the air pollution, vehicles and generators. BG Nepal first tested the products in Nepal in March 2009 with various makes of vehicles such as Opel, Chevrolet, Subaru, Suzuki, TATA, Mahindra, Toyota and Hyundai. The results were phenomenal and further study of the products enabled BG Nepal to believe that these products do make an exceptional contribution to automobile maintenance, air pollution quality and the environment, something that is much needed in Nepal now.

Owner’s Review It’s only been half a year since we (me and my husband) bought the Skoda Rapid. Although it might be too early to make any judgements right away, it is promising to be a good car. We are a retired couple and were looking for the best car that fell under our budget. Previously, we owned a Fiat, Toyota and a Maruti-Suzuki. So we wanted to buy a car that had a reputable brand reputation. We wanted to try out a Skoda as we had heard a lot of good things about it. A friend of ours living in India suggested the brand to us after recounting his experience in two different accidents on separate occasions. One incident took place in a Skoda and the other in a different car marquee. The Skoda fared much better and kept the people in the car safe while the other car did not show the same results. Initially we had thought of buying a car with a metallic colour, but then one of our family members suggested buying it in Red as the colour would stand out. At first me and my husband were hesitant as we felt the colour was too flashy for us. But when we saw Skoda Rapid in red, we instantly liked it and brought it home.

We are happy with the interiors, it is spacious and luxurious. The car hasn’t given us any trouble yet. The ground clearance is comparatively good in its segment as well. We haven’t had the chance to drive it out of the city yet but we are looking forward to doing so very soon.

In Nepal too, every generation of the Corolla introduced here has been able to win the heart and trust of its owners. Thus, building on the continuous reputation of the Corolla brand, United Traders Syndicate - the sole authorized distributor of Toyota vehicles in Nepal - has introduced the all-new 11th Generation Toyota Corolla. A new model that is all set to take on the mantle and continue the name of the world's best-selling car.
EXTERIOR
The latest Corolla features an all-new exterior design inspired from Toyota’s recent models for a more sophisticated and a prestigious image. The face-lifted car packs a sharper new design based on the facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
'Furia' design philosophy. At the front, the Corolla features a sculpted bumper with chrome V-shaped horizontal bars that extend visually towards the double barrel headlamps. The vehicle’s side profile is further enhanced by a sporty character line linking the top of the flared front wheel arch and the rear lamp cluster. The boring 15-inch steel wheels however don’t do justice to the premium feel of the car and could have been bettered with a larger stylish alloy wheel. At the back, the trunk lid features a sharp, crisp cut sandwiched by the stylish wide LED tail lamp clusters connected to the tasteful chrome bars. The new car is also wider and longer than the current model. Overall, the
2014 car looks markedly different, with more character lines, complex surfaces and a more planted stance.
INTERIOR
Inside, the car features a fully upgraded dashboard, upholstery and instrument cluster along with a slew of creature comforts. The interior trim is a mix of black soft-touch materials, faux carbon fibre, ivory-coloured plastic and chrome accents. All driving-related instrumentation and switchgear has been positioned to maximize ease of use and minimize driver distraction from the road. The clearly defined instrument cluster features cool blue AUTOLIFE April/May 2014 33
lighting with a multi-information display and the switches and knobs have a high quality touch to them. The entertainment system features iPod, USB and Auxiliary connectivity with CD/MP3/WMA/Radio functions, but premium features like an automatic climate control system, power seat adjusts, double din multimedia system, Bluetooth connectivity, etc feels sorely missing for a car of this class. In addition to the refurbished interior featuring a stylishly re-designed cockpit, superior trim materials and enhanced ergonomics, the all-new Corolla receives a supersized cabin and luggage compartment. The interior has also been crafted with sound absorption materials to offer a quiet ride environment. The new car maintains a sizable boot that can accommodate up to 470 litres of cargo while its 60:40 split folding seats allow more to be carried should the need arise.
PERFORMANCE
The new Corolla is equipped with a 1.6 litre petrol engine which develops 122 bhp of power and a maximum torque of 154 nm. The Dual VVT-i engine combined with the 6 speed gearbox claims to deliver greater power with low fuel consumption 34

OVERALL, THE 2014 TOYOTA COROLLA LOOKS MARKEDLY DIFFERENT, WITH MORE CHARACTER LINES, COMPLEX SURFACES AND A MORE PLANTED STANCE. and lower emissions. The 1.6 litre motor doesn’t really feel all that underpowered and is responsive from the get-go with the refined gearbox providing precise and smooth shifts. In city traffic is where you’ll truly appreciate the ease of driving the Corolla, as the light electric steering further aids your efforts to manoeuvre your way out of a jam. Once you pass the confines of the city though, you’ll start wishing for some additional power. Sudden overtaking requires more careful planning as top-end power is somewhat lacking. Also, the light electric steering begins to feel a bit too light and does not tighten as much even at higher speeds. Nevertheless, as long as you’re driving relaxed rather than in attack mode, the power is more than enough and the Corolla offers the simple joys of driving. On the road, it handles the usual bumps and ruts with ease. While having essentially the same MacPherson front suspensions and torsion beam rear setup as its predecessors, damping and spring rates have been retuned to get the right balance of comfort and handling, and the longer wheelbase benefits ride comfort and stability. It takes on corners with impressive precision despite the light steering feel and braking is spot on. On the safety front, the vehicle is equipped with Driver and Passenger Airbags, Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) front seats to reduce whiplash injuries during rear end collisions and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) that incorporates Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).

VERDICT
This eleventh generation of the Corolla adds some refinement to it’s tried and tested recipe. The 2014 Toyota Corolla is a sensibly stylish and practical car that offers an efficient drive from its humble 1.6-litre powerplant, coupled with a decent build quality and no-frills humble equipment level. It’s a fitting heir to a nameplate that carries nearly half a century of heritage. With the new car, Toyota also aims to attract more youthful buyers while still keeping in style with their current buyers. Our only grouse though is that it sadly does not set any benchmark and is still not backed up with all the sorts of goodies we have now come to expect in a car of this price. Otherwise, with the bombproof reliability as the main selling point of a Toyota, this all-new Corolla is still poised to remain as the darling of its segment it has defined and dominated for all these decades. After all this is Toyota’s best and most capable Corolla yet.

We got our hands on the all-new variant of the ultra-popular XUV500 SUV model series – the XUV500 W4, which was recently launched by Agni Incorporated Pvt Ltd. The newest variant is blessed with a lengthy list of features. As far as the appearance is concerned, the W4 version is no different from the existing variants in its model series.

The list of convenience features includes power and tilt steering, dual air-conditioning, electronically adjustable rear view mirrors, remote central locking, mobile charging points, glove box with laptop holder, remote fuel lid opener, follow me headlights, rear wash and wipe are just to name a few. The second and third row too remains fully foldable like the other higher spec XUV500 models. Some other important features that make the W4 a smart choice are it’s dual airbags, side impact beams and crash protection feature with crumple zones and there seems to be no compromise on the braking and handling aspects of this SUV. All the wheels are fitted with disc brakes, which are further augmented with ABS and EBD braking mechanism. Furthermore, its tilt power steering system is very sensitive, which will assist the driver even under the low speed conditions by responding precisely.
Verdict The W4 is priced at NRs 47.5 lakhs. Already a popular model in India, the new XUV500 W4 packed with a range of technology, safety and comfort features, is expected to add to the popularity of XUV500 in the country. Although the XUV500 W4 has lost out on a lot of the fancy gadgetry that the XUV was so well known for, in terms of specifications and technicalities, the W4 is the same as the W6 variant and the product is still better equipped for an entry-level version of its SUV series. It is definitely a car that will give the competition a run for its money.

AUTOLIFE INTERVIEWS
Rupesh Man Shrestha Founder/Director | Epic Mountain Bike The new wide roads in process around Kathmandu city is a good indication for the development of our Capital city, which is getting more and more populated day by day. However, the process execution and the quality of widening roads are not much liked by the residents of Kathmandu. I personally think that it does not matter how big or wide the roads are, unless we have a good management from all the authority combined. Preserve our Nature, and of course biking trails in National Parks.
Where the roads are headed In the process of widening the roads of the capital, it’s been a long time since we’ve suffered the demolished streets, the suffocating dusts and the unbearable traffic jams. We have all been desperately waiting for the constructions to come to a good end and been dreaming about driving in the swift, dust free roads. But the major question is, will the roads in Kathmandu turn out to be what we have dreamed for and what about its quality and execution? We asked a few people from the automobile industry about the construction of the new wide roads in Kathmandu and here is what they had to say.
Neeraj Shrestha Managing Director | GearVenture Bike Nepal The plan of widening the roads of Kathmandu was already made and documented in 2032 BS which means that we had to wait 38 years for this to get implemented. Despite all that, I am really happy to see the roads being constructed. However it is important to point that the work is extremely slow, mismanaged and of low quality. Instead of starting the job in time and finishing it in the deadline, they start very slow and when the pressure comes from the higher authority they hurry the work. This has led to poor quality construction. In addition to this, our Traffic Police are converting all the one ways into two ways which now has helped the wide road get narrower than before as the vehicles meet in the crossroads and create traffic jam.

Govinda Pd. Bhattarai General Secretary | Nepal Automobile Sports Association Widening is good. But widening alone will not solve the current traffic problems. Wider roads will attract more vehicles and ultimately will result in congestion. So along with widening we need to search for other alternative solutions, such as safe, comfortable and efficient public transportation, signalised intersection, overhead bridges at intersection, etc. Footpath and cycle lanes should be given priority. Since all the facilities and opportunities are available only in Kathmandu, more and more people are coming here. So if we can provide facilities out of valley, Kathmandu will not be as crowded and congested.
Abhinav JB Rana
Chairman | Turbo Motors Trading I feel that the roads in Kathmandu are pretty good compared to what we have been used to. So overall I am happy with the road expansion project. I’m expecting smoother rides with less traffic jams in the near future. However, I feel that as citizens it is our duty to remember the importance of proper maintenance and management for the long run. If we fail to do so, then we are sure to face difficulties like we had faced before, all over again. I also feel that during construction, implementation of safety regulations is a must and planning ahead for better networking can always save everyone’s time and resources. It would definitely be encouraging for everyone to see such positive developments and continuation.

I think Nepal Government has done a good job by widening the roads inside Kathmandu Valley. The whole city looks really different after the reconstruction of the roads. I am really hoping that these wide roads will reduce the traffic jams to a huge extent in the future. However, I
have found a few drawbacks as well. I have observed that most of pedestrian path (footpaths) in most of the places has been squeezed in order to widen the main roads. I feel that this could result in even more accidents. I think it is extremely important to look into this matter seriously and there should be a plan for a better pedestrian path in future. In addition to this, I have also found lane discipline to be another major issue which certainly needs to be addressed. If lane discipline is not properly monitored, these wide roads could lead to more accidents in the future.

For decades the Harley Davidson Sportster range has ruled the self-created bobber segment, mainly because it has had no competition since its introduction in 1957. But its reign maybe now coming to an end. Let me introduce you to the all-new Yamaha Star Bolt. Of course, it’s still not available in Nepal yet, but could be the perfect competitor to HD bikes like the Sportster Iron 883 when Harley official sets shop in Nepal pretty soon.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
STYLING The Yamaha Star Bolt first caught my attention during one of my casual stroll around the large independent motorcycle dealership I work at in the US. The designers at Star Motorcycles, which is a division of Yamaha Motor Corporation - USA used to brand Yamaha’s cruiser motorcycles, have left a brutally raw look to the Bolt; precisely what was planned, and exactly what it delivers. A high-set 12.1 litre gas tank attempts to shade the bulky blacked-out air cooled V-twin motor with polished fins. These sit cradled between a wellconstructed double down tube frame that ties in both ends of the bike with a mere 1570 wheelbase. The solo seat exposes a bit of the frame backbone as it leaves some room between the gas tank and the seat mount to give that custom bobber look. The speedometer gauge appears to be a bit large for the bike, but somehow manages to blend in as it’s mounted on low-risen pull-back handlebars. This leaves room for a classic stripped down bobber look with a clean appearance that only exposes the top of the headlight overlooking the road. The 19 inch front and 16 inch rear twelvespoke semi-gloss cast wheels come wrapped in a set of Bridgestone’s from the factory and help further define the raw bobber look to its AUTOLIFE April/May 2014 47
overall appearance. The well illuminating headlight in the front is complimented by the round LED cluster tail-light and turn signals at the rear. Needless to say, the designers have spent a lot of time studying the legendary Harley Sportster range and have somehow managed to transfer it over to the Bolt with a much more aggressively-civilized look. Stripped back and stylish, the Bolt also provides a perfect entry into the world of customization with a host of aftermarket options available.
PERFORMANCE The V-twin 942cc motor rumbles to life with a quick push of the switch. As the idle settles down it reveals how amazingly smooth the motor really is and lets out a throaty tone out of its 2 into 1 exhaust pipes. The power output from this relatively tame motor has been rated at about 62 bhp of power and 72 nm of torque. All of that acceleration is transferred via a 5-speed gearbox to the rear wheel with the help of a cushy belt drive. Swing your leg over and the average size rider such as myself (5’ 9) will find themselves tucked into a cozy position with mid-set foot pegs and handlebars well within an 48

arm’s reach. While the left leg sits over the rear cylinder head, the right leg comes away inches from the brushed aluminum exhaust shield. All switches and controls are fairly basic and are easy to operate even for a newbie. A “Select” button on the right side handlebars switch-housing allows the rider to browse through the speedometer, dual trip meter and a clock without letting go off the handlebars. However, the lack of a fuel gauge can be quite a concern. In addition, the LCD gauge can prove to be quite impossible to read on a bright sunny day but pleasantly comes to life in the dead of the night with a warm blue glow.
TCI (Transistor Controlled Ignition) responds with a grunt. The low to mid end torque is remarkable with the flawless transmission sending predictable power to the rear wheel at a moment’s notice. Shifting up and down frequently really brings out the true colors of this beast as
Having been designed for the urban U.S cities, I figured I would get to know the bike well in some dense rush hour traffic conditions. Flip back the kickstand, effortlessly pull in the buttery smooth clutch, stomp it into gear and off you go. Open up the throttle and the fuel injected

dodging in and out of traffic is quite effortless with the low center of gravity and a casually aggressive stance. Your inner legs however does begin to get warm after riding in traffic for a few minutes due to its proximity to the cylinder head and exhaust shield, but no significant discomfort is felt.
The Bolt easily climbs to 100 kmph+ cruising speeds on American highways and there is enough top end power left over to twist the throttle and achieve a 160kmph top speed without major vibrations rattling the body.
While the front end KYB component forks successfully soften pot-hole blows, the rear shocks is a bit on the stiffer side. Casual cruises over bumpy asphalt however is somewhat tolerable, but aftermarket suspensions and a gel seat upgrade are a must for most rider’s preference. After 350km of mixed riding in the crammed city streets and open highways, I decided to truly push the Bolts limits. Southern Ohio offers riverside cruises through hilly-winding roads, tight corners and the occasional gravel spewing potholes that require agile dodging skills quite like in the highways of Nepal. Pushed to its limits (and mine), the bike was able to handle just about anything I threw at it. The Bolt easily climbs to 100 kmph+ cruising speeds on American highways and there is enough top end power left over to twist the throttle and achieve a 160kmph top speed without major vibrations rattling the body. Crank it up a notch around tight corners and you will have sparks flying under you as the foot pegs scrape the asphalt while the Bridgestone’s effortlessly manages to keep the bike well planted to the road. The occasional obstacle or stopped traffic though required some hard braking to come to a halt at a predictable distance. 50

VERDICT The Bolt is offered in two models - the base starting at USD 7,900 and the R-Spec starting at USD 8,300. Both models share the same motor and measurements, however the R-Spec comes with an upgraded rear suspension with a remote reservoir, a suede vinyl seat, better paint schemes and blacked out mirrors. Yamaha also offers add-ons such as a passenger seat, quick release windshield and saddlebags for a little extra cash, but this barely compares to Harleys unlimited aftermarket options for the Sportster. So the answer to the big question – “I’ve got enough cash to buy a Harley Sportster or a Yamaha Bolt. What do I pick?” I wish the answer was as easy as the Bolts handling. Harley offers years of thumping American made iron-horse heritage in the Sportster package, whereas Yamaha brings a history of Japanese reliability and innovation all packed into the Bolt. Both are immensely fun to ride and cost pretty much the same. Well, the decision to pick between the two is just as complicated as Nepalese politics. But if you were to listen to me, here’s a helpful tip. Pick the Bolt!

Enfield Rendezvous & Poker Run WORDS: ANKIT SHAKYA | PHOTOS: SANAT DANGOL
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
There are people who like to celebrate the New Year with a dinner, a party or just sitting at home. Then there are those who turn up the ignition and rev their engines through the open highway. And unlike the rainstorms of Pokhara, which have a reputation of being highly unreliable, the Enfield Rendezvous & Poker Run has proved itself as a highly consistent thunder-ride over the years. For the 6th consecutive year, Sacred Summits pulled off Nepal’s biggest extravaganza on two wheels and we were part of it, yet again. We tagged along with over 200 partakers on the ride that has become a tradition for Royal Enfield owners and enthusiasts in Nepal. For the third time in the past three years, Rabi Thapa from Sacred Summits handed us the keys to a Royal Enfield Desert Storm that would be our companion for the next three days. With all the costs for the accommodation, participation and bike rental waived, we were all smiles. This year, the celebration ride kicked off from Zero Engineering, located at Chabahil. On the morning of the rally, we arrived at the flag-off point slightly late. Luckily, we didn’t miss anything. The outskirts of the Chabahil Ringroad was busier than normal with a considerable number of onlookers gathering at the roadside to observe what was going on. Squirming past them, we steered into the welcoming sight of over 150 Enfield motorcycles parked, deceivingly quiet, and a lively crowd of participants waiting to get the show on the road. This year there were participants from 10 different nations partaking in the Poker Run. Nearing to the start of the ride, the excitement in the riders was evident. But, before we got on our bikes, there was an important introduction in order. This event has seen a number of riders coming from different parts of the globe to participate. However,

Charlie had been traveling since June 2013 across United States to New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Philippines, India and for the Poker Run, into Nepal. Initiated by the World Wide Relay Riders, Charlie Bear has been on a motorcycle relay around the world ever since. Charlie will be handed over from one biker to the other until he makes it back to the point of origin. The entire concept is to raise funds to help children with life threatening illnesses. For a community that usually gets a bad rep, this is an eye opener. And did we mention? He is a stuffed toy bear. Charlie would be riding up front with our trusted Road Captain, Pramod “Goofy Shrestha.

Participants who were not present at the pre-event party picked up their first two cards while the others picked their second card for their respective Poker hands. The rest had become pretty much automatic for the seasoned riders who had been participating in the Poker Run throughout the years. After a short briefing and safety announcements over breakfast, everyone collected their T-shirts provided by Sacred Summits and made their way to their bikes. One by one everyone put their keys in the ignition and the atmosphere gradually filled with the overwhelming rumble of the noisiest and most well-known engine in the country. We thundered through the city, organized

We had a police escort up till a little distance past Nagdhunga which meant there weren’t any serious holdups in traffic. Still maintaining the two-bytwo line, we noticed that the Naubise road winding down had been freshly pitched. For the first few kilometres anyway. The tarmac ahead of us soon disappeared into a cloud of dust from the construction work being done on the roads. Manoeuvring through the patchy road and blinding dust for what seemed like a longer time than it really was, seeing smooth tarmac beyond the settling dust was a relief. Somehow, we had separated ourselves from the group. Instead of waiting, we decided to ride ahead and wait at the first check point. As we reached the first pit-stop at a highway restaurant near Naubise, everyone picked up their third card of the Poker Run. After a short while, the ride continued. Riders began to reorganize and the highway was alive again. Our Road Captain ushered us on and the riders slowly separated, enjoying their preferred speeds as the highway began opening up. The riders then regrouped at Mugling around midday. It was sweltering hot and taking off the jackets and helmets was very much welcomed. Taking some much needed rest, the participants cooled off and sat down for lunch that was being provided by Yeti Airlines. Funnily enough, the sun seemed to act like kryptonite to our daal bhaat power and we were left struggling to refrain from the urge to take a nap. So, after picking out our fourth card, our team left earlier than the rest of the convoy. Sticking to a slow pace, as we had originally planned, was turning out to be a challenge. The empty open roads practically taunted me to maniacally open up the throttle. It was most likely facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
that the rest of the party was still chilling at Mugling; which meant we were far ahead of schedule. Sitting and waiting at the next checkpoint did not seem like an appealing ordeal, so we took a detour towards Bandipur. The sun was shining bright and the winding roads leading up to the quiet settlement was decorated with the beautiful flora and fauna of the hills. Apart from the occasional bus or car, the narrow road was completely empty. The silence of the solitary hill was broken only by the blare of our Royal Enfield engine. By the time we reached Bandipur, the sunny skies had begun to darken. It also took us a longer time to get there than we had initially estimated. Because we wanted to get back to the group, we rushed back to the highway to join the rest of the riders. Happy to see other riders at the highway, we rolled on into the next and final stop at Akela Highway Restaurant, before reaching Pokhara. The fifth and final cards were dealt here, and we were pretty excited. In our previous hands we had picked out a 9 of diamonds, 10 of hearts, jack of hearts and a 7 of hearts. Getting an eight of any suit would mean that we had a straight, a strong hand. Knowing the odds were low, we were intentionally refraining from expecting a good hand. But, now that our chances were looking very good, it felt almost certain that this was the year for us. Praying for the support of lady luck, we picked up our fifth card. We got the 4 of spades. Much like the disappointment coursing through us after that, the skies were darkening as we departed for Pokhara. It looked like it would rain heavily as a slight drizzle started, and with the infamous reputation of Pokhara and its rainfall, a sudden downpour would have been a very expected welcome party. Thankfully AUTOLIFE April/May 2014 57
the rain gods held back their wrath. Darkness fell, and the headlights of the rally of Enfield motorcycles illuminated the pitched roads. Upon entering the city, we were welcomed at the Lakeside by the good folks of Pokhara with garlands, tikas and bright smiles on their faces. After the welcome, the entire group collected in an open field in the Lakeside and did a few “victory laps” and then headed towards Hotel Landmark. Eager to get the celebrations going, everyone dispersed into their respective rooms of Hotel Landmark and Hotel Snowland to freshen up. A nice buffet accompanied by some free flowing booze, courtesy of Nepal Ice, was set up in the Landmark Hotel courtyard and a local band from Pokhara began strumming some tunes. It didn’t look like the day’s ride had taken a toll on any of the participants as they partied into the night and welcomed the New Year 2071 in style. The next day, participants could either relax for the day or join the charity ride to Shree Dhara Pra Bi Vidyalaya. A school located 20 kms from Pokhara at a place called Puran Chaur, it was good to see a lot of the riders opt to participate in the charity ride. There was a small hitch on the way to the school due to a combination of bad terrain and blocked roads. But the well-coordinated crew helped everyone successfully get through. Once we got to the school, Rabi Thapa handed over the books and stationery in a short event, after which everyone returned to Lakeside. 58

One more event was in store for the night, an event that was the most anticipated for some of the participants: The Bike Show. Modified Enfields are a personification of the rider’s extravagance. Although not yet legalized by our government, riders go to great lengths to enhance the oomph factor of their rides. The bikes competing for the award of the Best Modified Enfield were parked outside the famous Club Amsterdam, where participants were already enjoying the live band and snacks. The winners would be chosen via voting. Later in the evening, prize distributions took place, hosted by Mr. Patrick Wilson. The prizes seemed to keep flowing. Upon entering the city, we were welcomed at the Lakeside by the good folks of Pokhara. It didn’t look like the day’s ride had taken a toll on any of the participants as they partied into the night and welcomed the New Year 2071 in style.
The morning breakfast the next day would officially complete the 6th edition of the amazing Poker Run. And it definitely did not disappoint this year either. A mix of caste, culture and nationalities getting together to ride through the highway to the beautiful city of Pokhara is definitely a tradition we could get used to. We’ll definitely be eagerly waiting for the next Poker Run. Although we didn’t win anything this year, we are hoping things will change in 2072. AUTOLIFE April/May 2014 59

ROAD RACING MAVERICK
A TRUE RACING LEGEND WHO SET AN IMPOSSIBLE TO FORGET AND AMAZING RECORD HAUL OF 26 VICTORIES IN THE CHALLENGING ISLE OF MAN TOURIST TROPHY COMPILED BY: SHISHIR POUDEL
There is good reason why a statue of road racing legend Joey Dunlop astride a Honda overlooks the Bungalow Bend from the highest point on the Isle of Man at Snaefell and the 26th milestone area of the infamous TT course has been renamed “Joey’s”. Joey Dunlop, with his record setting 26 victories at the Isle Of Man TT, easily dominated the championship as he blazed past the circuit donning his hard-to-miss yellow Arai crash helmet and straddling on to racing bikes stickered with his favourite number three. Overshadowing even the rich history of this championship, his is a name that is now synonymous with the tourist trophy. Take a bow for the greatest motorcycle road racer to have ever lived – Joey Dunlop. Born on 25th February, 1952 as William Joseph Dunlop in the small town of Ballymoney in Northern Ireland, Joey developed a bond with racing and victories at a much later stage in life. Being born in an average family with 6 other siblings and no history in motorcycle racing, it wasn’t likely that he would develop a passionate bond with motorcycle racing. But his love for machines gradually increased as his 62

father was a motor mechanic by trade and practice, and this helped him get closer with messing about engines. It was only in 1968, when he went to see a motorcycle racing event with his to be brother-in-law Mervyn Robinson, that he developed an immense fascination for the need for speed. The game changer then was when he borrowed a 50cc Itom racer from a wellwisher Brendon McMullen, and took his first bite of motorcycle racing. In 1969, he went on to own his first race motorcycle which was a Triumph Tiger Cub with a simple 199cc push-rod single cylinder engine that released about 10 horses. Over the years, he religiously worked towards establishing himself as a regular winner. In 1973, he then got his first full sponsor, Danny McCook, who supported him with a 350cc Ameracchi. But he failed to get off the starting line after breaking the chain. Joey then joined Rea Racing Team and gradually began to achieve success in local races. He then won his first road race in the 500cc class at Temple 100. He entered his first IOMTT race in 1976 facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
and earned his first medal at the circuit which was a bronze for the best newcomer. The following year, still a virtual unknown at the TT, he beat all the favourites to take the 1977 Jubilee Classic TT aboard a privately-entered TZ 750 Yamaha. A few barren TT years followed before he won the 1980 Classic TT 1000cc race, again Yamaha-mounted. And since then, he never had to look back. In 1981, he debuted for the Honda team and started winning TT races for Honda in 1983, beginning a winning run in the Formula I TT event that was to last for 6 consecutive years from 1983-88. In 2000, he had another triple win at TT, pushing his tally to 26 and for recognition of this astonishing feat, he was presented with Mann Sword Of State. By 2000, he accounted for Honda’s 23% of TT victories. Over the course of his career, he even took a podium in World Superbike Championship and was victorious in 24 Ulster Grands Prix, 13 North West 200’s and countless other races in the domestic series. He is also the only rider to have three Isle Of Man TT hat-tricks to his name with victories in 1985 (Formula I, Senior and Junior), 1988 (Formula I, Senior and Junior) and in 2000 (Formula I, Lightweight and Ultra Lightweight). Joey and victories were inseparable. But as they say, all good men stay less. In a tragic accident on 2nd July of 2000, Joey Dunlop was instantly killed on the spot while racing in Estonia. He had already won the 600cc and 750cc, and was leading the 125cc race on Pirita Kose Kloostrimeta Circuit, when he lost control of his bike in the wet conditions and had a fierce impact with the trees. His untimely death was an

A true racing legend, Joey Dunlop’s success in the mountain course is something that will live forever and it is incredibly doubtful whether anyone will ever come near his amazing record haul of 26 victories which all came in his twenty-four years of racing at the TT, from 1976 to 2000. Full of records along the way, he was and and will remain, a hero to hundreds of thousands of road racing enthusiasts in every corner of the world. But the ‘King of the Roads’ wouldn’t dream of it and never wanted the limelight, the fame or the attention as the supreme and all time master of the treacherous circuit. He just wanted to race bikes and to win. No wonder, his record on the pure roads circuits will probably never be bettered.

Joey has lapped the Isle Of Man course at over 180kmph in races 256 times and has more 190kmph plus laps to his credit than any other rider in the history of the races. Altogether Joey’s 26 TT wins include 7 Formula I TT, 4 Senior, 3 Junior, 5 Lightweight and 5 Ultra Lightweight Races, plus the 1977 Jubilee Race and the 1980 Classic 1000. In fact, he only crashed once in a TT race, at Sulby Bridge, after a leaking fuel cap let fuel onto the front tyre in 1986. But the genius of Joey Dunlop extends much further than his many wins. Joey would come around lap after lap, on the same line every time, totally at one with the bike, be it on a 125cc pocket rocket or a 1000cc monster. Equally at home on any bike from 125cc-1000cc, Joey was easily the most versatile rider of his generation. In fact, how many of today’s WSB or GP riders can do a 192kmph lap of the TT course on a 1000cc V-Twin, jump straight off that onto a 125cc bike, and pull off another 171kmph lap? None.

Throughout his career, Joey was highly superstitious. He always wore a red T-Shirt below his leathers, wouldn't write with a red pen, always put on his left glove and boot first, wouldn't turn back if he forgot something, always wore the yellow coloured Arai crash helmet and wouldn't walk under a ladder.
#3
Apart from his racing career, Joey is recognized for his tireless charity work and humanitarian deeds which was done without drawing public attention to himself. He would often load up his race transporter and deliver clothing and food to the trouble spots of Bosnia, Albania and Romania on his own. Joey was awarded the M.B.E. in 1986 for his services to the sport, and in 1996 he was awarded the O.B.E. for his noble humanitarian work and good deeds. Dunlop even stated that his proudest award was his OBE for Charity than any achievement in his very successful racing career.

In the 1980s, when his mates Frank, Mervyn and Tom died within a span of 12 months, he had briefly considered retiring from the sport. Co-incidentally, Joey too had a close encounter with death in the winter of 1985/86. Joey Dunlop was aboard the M.F.V. Tornamona in transit to the Isle of Man when the sea vessel struck St. Patrick’s Rock and lost its rudder. Dunlop and other riders were aboard with several bikes and equipment for the TT Races. After losing its rudder, the ship went off course spearing into St. Angus Rock where it sank. Fortunately, all the members aboard were rescued by a Portaferry Lifeboat. Diving efforts recovered the bikes 64

shortly after. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2010 after the accident in Estonia. As a mark of respect for his untimely death, the Estonian Government’s official website was replaced with a tribute to Dunlop within hours of his death. Live coverage of his funeral were telecasted, where more than 50000 of mourners attended the memorial service at the Garryduff Presbyterian Church in Northern Ireland. And for his recognition at the Isle of Man TT, the most successful overall rider at the annual TT races is awarded the Joey Dunlop Cup. A memorial statue was also erected in his hometown and in Isle of Man at Snaefell.

A race outfit worn by Joey Dunlop was sold for £13,000 at Sotherby in London by Graham Budd Auctions. The most successful rider in Isle of Man TT history had worn the leathers, boots, gloves and trademark yellow helmet during his 23rd TT victory in the 1998 Lightweight race. The outfit was also used to model a statue of the TT star, which now stands at the Bungalow on the Isle of Man TT course. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Motorcycle Art THE HISTORY OF AN EXOTIC BRAND THAT HAS MANUFACTURED SOME OF THE MOST PERFORMANCE HEAVY MOTORCYCLES IN THE WORLD WITH UNSURPASSED ATTENTION TO DETAIL IN THEIR DESIGN COMPILED BY: SAURAV NEPAL
An epitome of emotion, performance and speed perfectly clothed in a uniquely desirable design, MV Agusta is an exotic motorcycle brand that has enamoured the motorcycle world unlike any other manufacturer. An iconic leader in terms of both design and performance, MV Agusta has for long manufactured motorcycles that have easily made any biker go weak at the knees. The company was derived from the Agusta Aviation Company which was founded in 1907 by Count Giovanni Agusta at Cascina Costa. When he died in 1927, the company was passed into the hands of his son Domenico, Vincenzo, Mario and Corrado who quickly found themselves having to deal with a crisis in the aeronautics 66

sector and were forced to diversify to avoid shutting down. So they decided to convert from aircraft to motorcycles, in response to the Italians’ growing demand for motorised individual mobility. They then came up with an engine which was inexpensive to produce and run - a two-
stroke engine with a displacement of 98cc. Unfortunately the development of the engine was interrupted by the Second World War after Cascina Costa was occupied by German troops in 1943. Finally in the autumn of 1945, the first MV prototype called ‘Vespa 98’ was displayed to public. However, they had to change the name to just ‘98’ because the name Vespa was already registered by Piaggio. The ‘98’ went onto sale the next year and MV Agusta officially began competing in endurance races as well. They didn’t have to wait long for victory though, as MV Agusta motorcycles immediately became a regular at the podium in various championships. By 1948, the facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

range expanded considerably with MV launching a ‘Sport’ and ‘Luxury’ version of the 98 along with a new 2-stroke 125cc twin and a 250cc single cylinder 4T bike. Then in 1953, the company reached the threshold of producing 20,000 bikes for the first time. During the 1950s and the 1960s, MV Agusta had limited their production to small displacement bikes. But as sales were starting to go down, the company decided to concentrate more on larger displacement bikes. As a result, they created a 250cc model, a 350cc, and then a 600cc four-cylinder bike which was later improved and transformed into a popular 750cc bike called 750 Sport in 1970. The 750 Sport had its engine derived from Mike Hailwood’s 500 GP bike and it was capable of speeds above 220kmph. Mopeds were also added to the range of production motorcycles. Other notable bikes of the 50s and 60s manufactured by MV Agusta were
the 125 Motore Lungo, 175 CSS, Pullman, Turismo Rapido, Raid and 350B Sport. By then, the name MV Agusta had started to become synonymous with motorcycle racing, thanks to their decisive progress in performance and technology. The publicity generated by their success in racing brought MV increased sales of its variety of versatile models that perfectly responded to the demands of the market. In the span of three decades, MV carried some of motorcycle racing’s greatest names to victory with legends from the like of Giacomo Agostini, Mike Hailwood, Phil Read, Carlo Ubbiali, and Gary Hocking to John Surtees having ridden their iconic red and silver invincible record machines. Between 1950 and 1980, MV Agusta motorcycles won over 3000 races in various Championships including 34 wins in the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy and 75 Racer and Constructor titles in the World Championship.

AN ICONIC LEADER IN TERMS OF BOTH DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE, MV AGUSTA HAS FOR LONG MANUFACTURED MOTORCYCLES THAT HAVE EASILY MADE ANY BIKER GO WEAK AT THE KNEES. But with the death of Count Domenico Agusta in 1971, the company lost its guiding force and began to face hard economic times. Then in 1980, when the last bike in the Cascina Costa warehouses was sold, the company was forced to abandon its business due to their failure to find suitable financial partners. After a decade of shutting down, MV Agusta was again resurrected in 1991, thanks to Cagiva. Then in 1997, under the watchful eye of its new owner Claudio Castiglioni, MV Agusta released a brand new 750cc MV Agusta model range, dubbed the F4 750. Several 750cc and 1000cc motorcycles were released in the F4 series range and they instantly became an ideal object of desire for motorcycle lovers. The F4 range of bikes were hailed as a benchmark in terms of innovation, performance and handling, second to none. The renowned designer late Massimo Tamburini had been entrusted with the design of the new machines.
Popular limited edition models in the 750cc and 1000cc F4 range included the F4 Serie Oro, F4 SPR, F4 Senna 750, F4 Ago, F4 Tamburini, F4 Senna 1000, F4 Veltro and F4 CC. Then in 2006, the blistering naked Brutale joined the MV stable. Unfortunately, Cagiva too had run into their own financial problems. In 2004, Malaysian carmaker acquired the assets of MV Agusta but the purchase was shortlived as Proton decided to sell it to GEVI SpA. But, due to financial constraints, the company was again sold to Harley Davidson. However, in 2010, the company was re-purchased by Claudio Castiglioni and his wholly owned holding company, MV Agusta Motor Holding, S.p.A. To expand its presence in the market, MV Agusta then invested on a new platform, creating a revolutionary 3-cylinder 675 cc engine. Introduced in 2010, this engine gave rise to the new middle weight sports F3 675

and the naked Brutale 675. Throughout the course of 2013, the MV range was further expanded with the new market arrivals of the Brutale 800 and F3 800 and the entire 4 cylinder range was also renewed, with the upgraded F4 1000 and Brutale 1090. At the end of 2013, MV Agusta launched the Rivale 800 and presented the Turismo Veloce 800, the first revolutionary tourer by MV Agusta. The latest in their product lineup is the Dragster 800, a bike that promises to take exhilaration to a whole new level. Now back under the control of the Castiglioni family, MV Agusta is enjoying a period of successful growth and the brand is officially available in Nepal as well. GearVenture Bike Nepal Pvt. Ltd has acquired the authorized distributor for MV Agusta motorcycles in Nepal and launched the brand in Nepal with the introduction of the F3 675, Brutale 675, Brutale 1090 and Rivale 800.

ISLE OF MAN TOURIST TROPHY The Isle of Man TT is a racing spectacle like no other that not only involves great racing skills, but one that requires a lot of bravery to dump the clutch and fly away as the chequered flag is dropped at the start line. INFO & PHOTOS: www.iomtt.com
T
The Isle of Man, fondly referred to as the 'Rock' by residents, is usually a quiet serene island overlooking the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland. But this is not quite the reason we wanted to introduce you to this docile island. Much to our interest, the parliament of this island actually has a strange legislation that permits the closing of its public roads for the occasional transformation of the Isle to the ultimate road racing course in the world. And the most notable among the races organized in the treacherous mountain course around the island, is the prestigious Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. Having already claimed the lives of nearly 250 riders in its 107 year history, the IOMTT is one of the most dangerous motorcycle races in the world with racers now averaging speeds in excess of 200kmph in the 60.73kms lap race around the island. The Tourist Trophy was first initiated in 1907 when a 25kms long motorcycle race was run on the island’s St John's short course. The IOMTT is a time trial event with riders setting off individually in tensecond intervals, which means they are racing against the clock and not necessarily

AUTOLIFE April/May 2014
the rider in front. It was only after 1911 that the race began to be organized around the infamous Snaefell Mountain Course that we know today. When the full mountain course race was first won by Oliver Godfrey in 1911, he had clocked in an average speed of about 75kmph. Today, the record for the best average speed in one lap around the circuit stands at 211.90kmph! The bikes may be faster and the lap times shorter – but the battle to be the best remains. Besides taking breaks during the two World Wars, the TT has been held continuously ever since. Interestingly, the Isle of Man TT race was also part of the FIM Motorcycle Grand Prix World Championship between 1949 and 1976, before the FIM stripped the TT of its official status thereafter citing safety concerns. Today, some 40000+ spectators arrive on the island to witness nearly 300 fine road racers take on the gruelling mountain circuit in the legendary Isle of Man TT races. However, the IOMTT is not only just about the races, as the event is also a two-week festivity with motorcycle exhibitions, tributes, celebrity attendances, concerts, parties, carnivals, etc.
The Isle of Man TT presents the ultimate challenge for both machine and rider. The TT races are extremely dangerous not only because riders achieve high speeds on very narrow twisting streets, countryside roads and lanes flanked by stone walls and buildings, but conditions on the mountain course are very unpredictable with several tricky high speed jumps and obstacles. Sometimes riders crash into one another, sometimes they fly off cliffs, sometimes they collide with parked cars or light poles, sometimes they hit stray animals and sometimes they kill spectators. With seconds to go before the races, the riders have no option but to say a few private words to the man upstairs and take a deep breath before setting off.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
RACE CATEGORIES The Isle of Man TT is split into five categories - Superbike, Senior, Superstock, Supersport, Lightweight, Sidecar and TT Zero Challenge. While the top racers in the Superbike class cover six laps, averaging close to 210kmph, racers in the zero-emissions TT Zero Challenge have to complete only a lap. THE CIRCUIT The Snaefell Mountain Course is a 60.73kms long circuit with over 260 bends and runs from the start at Glencrutchery Road in a westerly direction through Braddan, Union Mills, Glen Vine and Crosby until it reaches Ballacraine. At Ballacraine the riders turn right and head north through Glen Helen, Kirk Michael, Ballaugh and Sulby to Ramsey, some 38kms from the start. Then
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
the riders swing south and head up the daunting mountain climb rising from sea level in Ramsey to some 425m at the highest point in Brandywell. On the way they pass through Ramsey Hairpin, The Waterworks, Gooseneck, Guthries Memorial, The East Mountain Gate, Black Hut, The Verandah and the Bungalow. After Brandywell it is nearly all downhill to the finish, some 10kms away, through Windy Corner and the 33rd Milestone on through Keppel Gate and the fast run down to Creg-ny-Baa. Then it's on down to Brandish and on up through Hillberry to Signpost Corner. Now just over a kilometre from the finish the riders swoop through Bedstead corner and the Nook and past the Governor’s residence on their left to Governor’s Bridge. From there it's just a short run up Glencrutchery Road to the finish line.
HOW TO WATCH For the ultimate Isle of Man TT experience you must watch at least one session from TT Grandstand in Douglas. This iconic building offers unrivalled views of the start/ finish line and the 270kmph+ stretch as the racers complete one circuit. You also have clear views of the scrutineering area, pit lane, paddock and the podium. There are also many popular areas all around the course with different level of facilities where fans watch the action every year. For those who cannot make it to the island to witness the spectacle, the competition is telecasted live all over the world by several popular broadcasters. BRUCE ANSTEY
New Zealander Bruce Anstey shouldn't be overlooked. The low-profile star ranks as the 11th most successful TT rider since the races began in 1907. He has nine TT wins to his credit and is one of the few riders to have ever lapped the TT course averaging more than 210kmph. He has once again teamed up with the experienced British-based Padgetts Honda Racing Team and will also represent Team Mugen with his debut in the TT Zero class. With his last victory back in 2012 in the Supersport TT class, Anstey is keen to take his tally of race wins to 10.
IOMTT 2014 RIDERS TO WATCH OUT FOR Competition is going to be tough this year with the starting grid at the 2014 Isle Of Man TT lined up with an exciting mix of established race winners, regular front runners and exciting new talent. We pick our favourites.
JOHN McGUINNESS
John McGuinness is the unmistakable king of the mountain with 20 TT wins to his credit and is second only to the late, great Joey Dunlop, who has 26 TT victories. However, McGuinness is the fastest rider around the circuit having achieved a one-lap average speed record of 211.90 kmph and is still the man to beat. He will be racing a Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade for Honda Road Racing. Having last won races in 2012 starting from the head of the field, John McGuinness is now back as number one on the grid and is expected to use the advantage of the clear road ahead to try and break the chasing pack.
JAMES HILLIER
James Hillier secured his first TT victory in 2013 with a start-to-finish win in the threelap Lightweight race. One of the new breed of youngsters competing at the TT, Hillier is only going to get better and he arrives this year with a strong team which should carry him to even greater heights. There’s no reason at all why he can’t be in the top ten in all five of his races and he’s definitely another rider worth watching. 72

DANNY WEBB
Danny Webb is one of the leading Moto 3 contenders in the world and will make his real road racing debut at the 2014 Isle of Man TT Races riding for KMR Kawasaki. The promising youngster will contest in the Superbike, Superstock, Lightweight and Senior TT Races. The 22-year old is considered one of the brightest prospects at this year’s TT, a claim supported by his seven years of Grand Prix level competition. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
GUY MARTIN
Martin is arguably the most famous of all TT riders thanks to his film debut in the bonechilling ‘Closer to the Edge’ documentary based on the Isle of Man TT. Despite his cine fame, he shouldn’t be underestimated. Guy is dedicated, desperate to win, with one of the best teams - TAS Suzuki - and is one of the fittest sports men around. Signed by Northern Ireland’s TAS Racing team for a fourth consecutive season, Martin has also prepared a Kawasaki ER6 Supertwin machine on his own for the Lightweight class.
CAMERON DONALD
Donald has yet to win another race at the TT since his superb double in 2008, but he remains the eighth fastest rider ever to lap the Mountain Course with a speed of 210.388kmph. Cameron Donald will be contesting in the 2014 Isle of Man TT Races for iconic British manufactured Norton Motorcycles. Donald will compete in the Superbike and Senior TT races on Norton’s new SG3 machine. The likeable Aussie has shown brilliance at times, and should be another safe bet for a podium position, if not a race win.
CONNOR CUMMINS
The third fastest rider ever at the Isle of Man TT, and the fastest rider from a standing start on the Mountain Course, Connor Cummins is eager to put his name in the history books with a race win. Connor had a life-threatening crash at the 2010 TT and was injured in 2013, which means he’s never really had the opportunity to attack the TT since his famous accident. Racing now on the Honda CBR1000RR SP, Cummins might finally have his chance.
MICHAEL DUNLOP
Michael's father, Robert, was a multiple TT race winner and his uncle was the famous Joey Dunlop. Road racing runs through the veins of this seven-time TT winner. Having joined forces with BMW Motorrad Motorsport, he's as determined as ever and has no excuses in terms of machinery with the factory backed BMW S1000RR in the Superbike and Senior TT races, plus his own MD Racing BMW in the Superstock class. It’s been 75 years since George Meier last gave BMW victory in the feature class at the mecca of international road racing in the Senior TT, but Dunlop believes he can end the long wait.
MICHAEL RUTTER
Michael made his debut in the TT Races in 1994 and finally achieved his ambition in 1998 when he won the Junior TT Race. 2011 saw Micheal venture into the Zero TT with the Segway Racing MotoCzysz team and ever since then he remains unbeaten in the Zero TT class with three consecutive victories in the one-lap race for electric bikes. Michael will be racing for Smiths Triumph Racing Team on the Triumph Daytona 675R.
IAN HUTCHINSON
In 2010, Ian Hutchinson not only became the first rider in history to win all five solo races at one meeting of the IOMTT, but set two lap records in the Superstock and Senior TT as well and added eight wins to his TT campaigns. Unfortunately, just three months after his five-timer at the TT, Hutchinson suffered serious leg injuries in a high-speed crash at Silverstone and missed the 2011 event. In 2013 too he was side-lined due to injuries. Ian has been to hell and back since achieving that magnificent feat and will be determined to get back to winning ways immediately. He will be riding a Yamaha R6 Supersport machine alongside the Yamaha R1 that will race in the Superbike and Senior TT Races. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

WORDS: SAILENDRA DANGOL VICE PRESIDENT AT KATHMANDU CYCLE CITY 2020, CYCLE CITY NETWORK NEPAL
Cycle City Network Nepal is a non-profit youth network dedicated to improve the quality of environment and contribute to a healthier life style by promoting the use of an easily accessible eco-friendly means of transport: the bicycle. As a part of our campaign “Kathmandu Cycle City 2020”, we installed a bicycle stand in Durbargmarg, Kathmandu in front of Hotel Annapurna’s gate. This is the first ever bicycle stand on a public space which accommodates up to 10 bicycles at a time. Cycling in Kathmandu has become a popular trend, but we don’t have proper infrastructure to park our bicycles. Frankly, people are getting sick of finding a pole or tree every time they have to park their bikes! Even in the parking lot in big shopping malls, cyclists are shown the corners to stash their bikes. We are hoping that cycle stands on public spaces like this will boost the morale of a common cyclist and encourage them to “Ride with Pride”. We have designed the front part of bicycle stand resembling the shape of a car, written on it is “1 Car = 10 cycles”. As streets of Kathmandu are being expanded because of traffic congestion, we want to deliver a message to both public and policy makers that the bicycle is the future for sustainable urban transportation. Almost a dozen cycle enthusiasts were present to welcome the first ever public bicycle stand on 30th April 2014 morning at 8:30 AM. We are looking forward to install more cycle stands on heritage sites like Patan Durbar Square and Basantapur Durbar Square. We look forward to get support from the youth to join our campaign of making Kathmandu a cycle friendly city by 2020 AD. 74
