Owner’s Review A few months ago, I was searching for a sedan which could meet my requirements such as, ride dynamics, luggage space and attractive exteriors . A cousin of mine who had recently purchased a Skoda car recommended me Rapid 1.6 MPI Elegance. After that I decided to do a little research about the car on my own too, while doing so I found that the services promised matched my necessities exactly and I decided to purchase it. I must say the car has lived up to my expectations. Regarding the exteriors, I think overall look of the car is just fabulous. Design wise it is very European; it has mature ride and handling capability and confidence inspiring brakes. On to the vehicle’s handling, power and performance on our roads, I find the suspension quite stiff at low speeds, but it still manages to tackle potholes with smooth ease. Even though my car just completed first service check I can definitely say that this car lives up to its reputation being a sibling of Volkswagen Vento. All in all, I find this vehicle to be an excellent choice for our roads.

Sachin Sharma

Managing Director Atlantic Enterprises Pvt Ltd.

In addition to the car’s design and performance, the customer service provided by Skoda is equally promising. I went to their service centre for a mandatory 3 month check-up a few weeks back and I was delighted by their prompt response. Another thing I want to mention about their customer service is that, though I had booked the car, I couldn’t get it because of some technical problems in India; in compensation, I was given their loaner car which itself was Skoda Rapid, for about 10 days. Which other dealers in Nepal give you this level of service? Till now I love this car and I’m glad that I purchased it.

SUZUKI CELERIO The Celerio, Suzuki’s most recent flagship, is a hatchback that will eventually replace the A-Star and the Estilo. Arun Intercontinental Traders Pvt Ltd, the sole authorized distributor for Suzuki vehicles in Nepal, plans to launch the hatchback in the festive season of 2014. The Celerio is a fairly tall hatchback and Suzuki engineers have used vertical space well to maximize head and legroom. The design of the dashboard conforms to Suzuki’s well laid-out and functional template. There’s a U-shaped centre console that houses the audio system and aircon controls, while the gear lever comes positioned high up making it easy to reach. The black plastics on the dashboard top contrast well with the beige ones used elsewhere in the cabin. You get two cupholders up front, a bottleholder each on the rear doors and another recess to hold a bottle behind the handbrake. The Celerio comes with an updated version of the Wagon R’s K10 three-cylinder, 1.0-litre engine. The Celerio also debuts Suzuki’s new five-speed gearbox that is 3.5kg lighter than the one on the Alto K10 and Wagon R. For those who want to do away with the bother of modulating the clutch altogether, the big news is that the Celerio will be available with an automatic gearbox, which Suzuki calls ‘EZ Drive’. It does not use a torque converter

22 26

AUTOLIFE June July 2014 2014

but rather relies on an electronic control unit that manages hydraulic actuators to control clutch engagement and gearshifts. What’s amazing is that the basic five-speed gearbox is shared with the manual, and that keeps costs low as well. Along with performance, Suzuki wants to market the Celerio automatic for its fuel economy. In India, the Celerio is offered in three variants, each with varying levels of features. Air-conditioning and power steering are standard on the base LXi, while the VXi model gets a rear parcel shelf, power windows, central locking and internally adjustable rear view mirrors. The top-spec ZXi is visually distinguishable by its alloy wheels and body-coloured door handles. In its ZXi avatar, the Celerio also gets an integrated audio player with USB, aux-in and Bluetooth for telephone and audio streaming functions, steering controls for the audio system, electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors, tilt-adjustable steering, a driver’s side airbag, rear wash/wipe and a rear defogger.

The sport utility vehicle (SUV) and pick up truck segments of the automotive market have a strong following all over the world, and Nepal is following suit. To know if the market is equally promising in Nepal and whether or not SUVs are really a good option for our roads, we caught up with Mr. Bardan Basnet, the GM of Mahindra Motors and asked him a few questions. Here is what he had to say. 1. How is the market of SUVs in Nepal?

I would say that the market of SUVs are growing and holds a good potential in our market. 2. How are the market reviews?

There is no denying that sports utility vehicles (SUVs) are increasingly becoming popular among car buyers, here in Nepal. The market reviews are also quite promising, As a result of the spill over effect of Indian market most Automobile players getting into this segment will avail many budget SUVs option in days to come. 3. What is your target group? Have you observed SUV s to be popular among any particular group in Nepal?

Our target group includes individuals with long/frequent commuting, and those who own travel companies and Institutions. There isn’t any particular group as such. If given a choice, the Nepali consumers would prefer to have SUVs as a second car.

4. What is the benefit of riding an SUV in comparison to other cars?

8. How would you describe the auto industry in Nepal?

The benefits of riding an SUV in comparison to other cars are safety, the capability to go anywhere, road stance and robustness. In addition to all this SUV and crossovers are also designed with a smooth ride in mind. Their suspensions are meant to soak up road imperfections, and allow for smooth handling. The result is a ride that’s a lot quieter and more comfortable than what you find in other vehicles.

A mere 1.6% of households in Nepal own four wheelers. If the economy and the prosperity of the working class people improves, there is ample room for development of the auto industry.

5. According to you, what are the factors to consider when making the decision to purchase an SUV?

Power and Power and torque; an under powered SUV lacks the core element of its category. The other factors that should be focused upon are gradient access; ground clearance, high stance seat with good visibility. 6. What do you think are the factors favouring the growth of SUV segment?

The SUV has become more affordable due to import of Indian made SUVs. Along with this, the ease of vehicle financing and the road conditions have favored the growth of this segment. 7. To what extent is an SUV a need for Nepali roads?

Considering the fact that 77% of Nepal consists of hills and mountains, you could say

9. What do you think are the key challenges for the auto sector in Nepal?

In spite of being one of the major revenue earning sectors for the government, their policies ironically do not favor the growth of the auto industry. It is one of most capital intensive sector and has slow ROI. 10. Are you passionate about cars and bikes? Which was your first vehicle?

Yes I am, passionate about them, especially four-wheelers. My first car was Suzuki Alto. 11. What is your dream vehicle and, why?

My Dream Vehicle is the Bugatti Veyron. It is considered the fastest car on road. 12. Most memorable moments while driving or riding…

There are many. One that comes to mind is a 12 hour drive I made from Dhangadi to Accham (Mangelsen) and back to Dadeldhura without stopping. That was memorable.

IF THE ECONOMY AND THE PROSPERITY OF THE WORKING CLASS PEOPLE IMPROVES, THERE IS AMPLE ROOM FOR DEVELOPMENT OF THE AUTO INDUSTRY facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

When the original Honda CR-V debuted in the late 1990s, its mission was simple: to offer a distinct alternative to more mainstream mid size and full-size SUVs. With its car-based design, economical four-cylinder engine and sedan-like ride and handling, the CR-V was an instant hit. Priced competitively and offering plenty of passenger room and cargo capacity for most people’s needs, the Honda CR-V has long enjoyed strong sales numbers and unfaltering loyalty from consumers worldwide. This is the fourth incarnation of the Honda CR-V, a car that has some off-road ability, but majors on providing practical family transport and a high vantage point on the world.

AUTOLIFE July 2014 33

Our most recent test vehicle was the Honda CR-V RVSi petrol with automatic transmission. The Honda CR-V is a highly functional, capable compact crossover. The latest version looks even less like a rugged off-road machine than its predecessors, and is the first CR-V to be offered without four-wheel drive to minimize fuel consumption. It has space for five and a huge boot, while Honda’s reliability record suggests it should prove very reliable.

Honda’s latest incarnation of its compact SUV has a smooth, nononsense look about it.

STYLING

Honda’s latest incarnation of its compact SUV has a smooth, no-nonsense look about it. The exterior styling expresses the CR-V’s power and functionality. The front bumper features an aerodynamic shape, and the highly curved rear glass emphasizes the large cargo area while adding further energy to the design. The CR-V is well equipped with dual-zone climate control, 17-inch alloys, a multifunction steering wheel, heated electric mirrors and cruise control coming as standard. Its interior is intelligently thought out and boasts strong fit and finish. Some clever design work has managed to make the new CR-V smaller on the outside but offers more interior and luggage space on the inside than its predecessor. That’s mainly because the floor is now lower, although the occupants still have an excellent view out through the deep windows. The CRV’s dashboard is less button heavy than other Hondas and the quality of the plastics

used is good, ensuring its capability of coping with the demands of everyday life. Furthermore, the spacious interior is given a classy look thanks to its matt finish. The front seats are slightly further apart than before, thus increasing more shoulder room. There’s excellent leg and headroom throughout with seats, which are both supportive and comfortable. More sounddeadening material throughout the cabin makes this generation much quieter than the last CR-V. With all seats in place there’s 556 litres of load space but drop the seat backs to an almost-flat position with a clever lever and this jumps to 1648 litres when loaded to the roof – not something that we’d recommend. The CRV comes with a full-size spare wheel. Up front there’s a cup holder and a box under the armrest, as well as a traditional manual handbrake, which makes maneuvering in confined spaces easier and smoother than with the electric one found in many new cars.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE July 2014 35

Speedometers come no clearer than the CR-V’s large dial dead ahead of the driver, flanked by smaller but equally crisp semi-circular instruments for the rev counter, fuel level and engine temperature. The other controls are well laid out, including those on the steering wheel for the trip computer and other functions, but there is a confusing multiplicity of buttons straddling the satellite-navigation screen.

SAFETY

Every CR-V incorporates as standard equipment VSA, an electronic stability control system; an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Brake Assist; side-curtain airbags; frontside airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); and a front seat design that

36

AUTOLIFE July 2014

can help reduce the severity of neck injury in the event of a rear collision. An advanced body structure in the front of the vehicle helps make the vehicle highly effective at absorbing and dispersing the energy of a frontal crash.

PERFORMANCE

The engine is quiet and refined even at high revs; the CR-V will impress with its acceleration and handling composure. The model we test drove came with 2.0 petrol engine and is only available with two-wheel drive but with five-speed automatic transmission. The CR-V peaks at 114 kW and 190 Nm and, with nearly 100 kg less weight to carry without 4WD, supplies more than enough urge for the average urban user.

We’ve always loved the CR-V’s dashboard mounted gear lever with its sporty short shifter and there is also the option of shifting through steering wheel mounted paddles. Changes on the automatic are slick and timely. Its ride is more comfortable and quieter than before, and handling and steering remain high points. Its major shortcoming concerns passing power in certain circumstances. We’ve found the CR-V’s acceleration peppy enough around town, but somewhat sluggish during merging and passing maneuvers on gradients. However, as long as your beaten path doesn’t include many steep roads or overly heavy loads, the Honda CR-V should provide all the room, refinement and performance you will ever need.

VERDICT

Today, the compact SUV segment has grown to include more than a dozen different models, with varying philosophies of what constitutes the perfect blend of size, power and capability. While some models offer more powerful upgrade engines and others can deliver true off-road capability, the Honda CR-V remains focused on its more practical aspirations. Honda has designed this car with practicality and comfort in mind. The CR-V meets this requirement perfectly thanks to a roomy, versatile and comfortable cabin, with enough storage solutions and convenience features. Honda has a strong heritage in building great engines and it uses the latest technology to maximize efficiency, and is more than capable of delivering strong pace. True to form, it is one of the best choices available in the all-important areas of being both easy to drive and family-friendly.

Mitsubishi makes some of the finest cars in the world, including some exceptional ones as well. But, it’s their dynamic SUV range that has always been the apple of the eye of the top-notch engineers at Mitsubishi. So, it would be very safe to say that the Japanese company’s knowledge base on off-roaders is second to none. Sure there’s a lot of respect for most products in their portfolio, but the Mitsubishi Pajero somehow exceptionally stands out. For years, the Pajero has been the weapon of choice among adventure enthusiasts, with its generous offering of everything you’d ever need to overcome that seemingly impossible road obstacle. Which brings me to the Pajero Sport - a toned down version of its iconic predecessor and a saner alternative to its bigger and brutal sibling. So we drive the latest version of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport to see if this one really balances off-

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

road dexterity with a composed on-road behaviour.

EXTERIORS A quick glance at the new Pajero Sport and you’d be forgiven for thinking that its same old model because the exterior dimensions are almost similar. The most obvious changes are at the front with a relined chrome grille garnish and front bumper along with new skid plates. It stands tall and looks quite purposeful with those massive wheel arches and new snow-flake spoke design alloy wheels. Apart from this, there aren’t any major changes to the side and the rear of the Pajero Sport facelift. Overall, the Pajero Sports dons a distinctive SUV look that you would typically compare with any big burly off-roader. It possesses a perfect blend of style and substance with its bold design that beholds the traditional appeal of a SUV.

INTERIORS Inside, the Pajero Sport gives a commanding view of the surroundings by combining a high seat position with a wide front windshield. The controls, meters and gearshift are all ergonomically arranged around the wheel for intuitive operation while driving. The dashboard is thoroughly modern with a combination of metallic and faux wooden panels giving a rich feel to the black and beige interiors. Equipment levels on the highest variant includes an electric chromatic rear view mirror, rain sensing wipers, light-sensing HID lamps, automatic climate control, rear park assist with camera, 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, multi-information display and a neat three-spoke steering wheel littered with multimedia controls. Then, of course there’s the practical seven-seat layout where the third row and second row seats also fold to offer a whopping 1776 litres boot space.

AUTOLIFE July 2014 41

PERFORMANCE IS GOOD WITH THE MIDRANGE PACKING IN A LOT OF PUNCH AND CRUISING IS QUITE EFFORTLESS ONCE IT PICKS UP PACE.

PERFORMANCE The new Pajero Sport is powered by an improvised 2.5 litre 16-Valve Intercooled Turbocharged DOHC Common Rail DI-D engine that delivers 134 bhp of power and 314 nm of torque. The newer generation engine means improved fuel consumption and lower emissions, even with the increase in the power output and maximum torque. The Sport is relatively quick off the line, and once the tachometer climbs past the 2000 rpm mark, it gathers more steam. Performance is good with the mid-range packing in a lot of punch and cruising is quite effortless once it picks up pace. Stability at high speeds is surprisingly good as it feels perfectly calm and composed even at triple-digit speeds. Ride quality is quite good and it just smothers potholes at speed. The suspensions flattened out even the largest of potholes. For something this tall, the Sport goes around corners relatively well too. It has body roll, but it never threatens to topple over. The steering does feel a bit weighty at parking speeds, but as soon as you are up and running, the feel and feedback are exactly what you want. The well-weighted brakes allow you to bleed speed in a drama-free manner too. The drive is 42

AUTOLIFE July 2014

comfortable for an SUV of this size, but noise levels are higher than what you expect in this day of quiet diesels. But it’s got that signature Pajero noise I have been highly accustomed to, and I am inclined to say that I almost love the clatter. Ground clearance on the Sport is very impressive, and it comes with Mitsubishi’s rally proven Super Select 4WD system. The system provides a choice of four different driving modes from 2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLc to suit almost any terrain, and when the going gets tough you can always engage the rear differential lock. Though we didn’t get the opportunity to extensively test its off-roading dynamics, we are confident that if given the opportunity to prove itself off the beaten track, it will easily grant you access to remote places. Even steep and slippery climbs, deep slush pits, massive wheel articulation obstacles, river fording and a variety of other challenges shouldn’t pose much problems for the Pajero Sport. There’s also plenty of safety specifications on offer from the Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution body design, Extra-strong Body Construction, 6-Airbag System, Active Stability & Active Traction Control to Anti-Lock Brakes System with Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution and Emergency Brake Assistance.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE July 2014 43

FINAL VERDICT The first thing that comes to my mind on seeing a Pajero is its reliability and the ability to take on whatever you throw at it. So is the Pajero Sports equally impressive? YES. It offers versatile driving dynamics with a fantastic off-road and sober onroad behaviour, boasts of robust build quality and is loaded with many features that include stylish aesthetics and creature comforts. It makes a very attractive proposition for people looking for a high specification large-size SUV. This Sport has what it takes to challenge the competition and is entirely worthy of its junior Pajero status.

FUNK-TIONAL CROSSOVER SUBARU XV

WORDS AND PHOTOS: AUTOLIFE TEAM

50

AUTOLIFE July 2014

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Subaru and crossover SUVs go a long way. The manufacturer has been making crossovers way before they became fashionable as in recent times. But to be honest, Subaru’s outing in Nepal with the Forester has been less than impressive in spite of the SUV coming from the popular Japanese breeder with a strong history of bulletproof reliability. So as to spruce up things, Subaru has now introduced the more stylish and sporty XV Crosstrek in Nepal.

EXTERIOR

The 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek manages to look remarkably different than the Impreza hatchback on which it’s based. The makeover comes courtesy of a much taller stance, larger alloy wheels, a slightly restyled front end and body cladding that together transform it into a much tougher little crossover. It has an impressive low-slung and sleek shape with chunky edges and corners. The XV makes a strong statement with its eye-catching and funky 17-inch alloy wheels which are matched by a dynamic body kit that includes striking front grille, hawk-eye headlights, bold bumper, body-coloured roof spoiler, roof rails, black wheel arches and front fog lights. To make sure that the Crosstrek has some actual outdoor credibility, Subaru has lifted the body and increased the wheel travel as well, resulting in an SUV-like 220 mm of ground clearance. Together with the standard all-wheel drive, the XV Crosstrek is more than ready for spontaneous off-road adventures. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE July 2014 51

The XV Crosstrek thus delivers its goals of being a stylish compact crossover with its rugged and sporty appeal. The design is youthful and fresh, balancing the right amount of machismo that wouldn’t make it out of place whether it’s in the great outdoors or at a posh location.

INTERIOR

On the inside, there is a simple straightforward dark interior with soft touch surfaces, intuitive controls and an advanced multi-function display. It’s a tasteful and fuss-free design with much of the dials and instrumentation neatly laid out and easy to figure out. Aside from offering the usual trip computer functions such as Instantaneous Fuel Economy, Average Fuel Economy, and Distance to Empty, the multi-function display throws things like self-check maintenance alerts, calendar functions, safety-related information, and even Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) monitoring into the mix. It even has a customizable triple-meter display that shows things from coolant temperature

to accelerator pressure to elapsed time travelled. Plus it doubles as the monitor for the standard back-up camera. There is lots of hard plastic at work in the cabin, but it does feel immaculately well built. The cabin is not luxurious by any stretch of the imagination, but functional and cost-effective. The instrument cluster is well laid out and the adjustable telescopic steering is equipped with a couple of buttons for various in-car functions. Interestingly, the pedals have been sportily sheathed in aluminium complete with grippy rubber studs. The XV comes with a solid selection of premium features such as Bluetooth connectivity and audio streaming, iPod compatibility, USB port, electric sunroof and automatic dual-zone climate control, making it nicely equipped. The XV Crosstrek is compact on the outside, but still boasts adult-size rear seats with ample legroom and spacious cargo compartment. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

PERFORMANCE

The XV is powered by a flat-four 2.0 litre engine that produces 148 horsepower and 196 nm of torque. The engine is a “boxer” configuration which means that the pistons fire to the sides from the centre of the engine block, creating better engine response and improved horsepower. Once rolling, the CVT automatic transmission does its best to keep the engine on boil. But acceleration from a standstill may not be much to brag about. However, there’s a manual mode with a six-speed paddle shifters allowing you to pick your own gear, for those that like to take control. It drives brilliantly on asphalt. Responsive steering and deft handling give the XV an unshakable feel that connects it to the sporty side of the Subaru family. The steering on the XV is nicely weighted and the chassis is responsive through corners. It feels reasonably firm on standard road driving, with minimum body roll. The Subaru XV Crosstrek does great justice to what it simply means Crossover Vehicle. It’s a proper compact and stylish offroader with full-time four-wheel drive and some serious ground clearance poised to take on all your urban adventures.

other hand imparts a very confidence inspiring hold on the road. Take it to a rough off-road section and it rides the bumps and dips with poise and comfort. The additional ground clearance is a welcome over some tough rocky sections, making the Crosstrek more than capable of handling some wild adventures. There’s also quite an extensive list of safety features, with basics like Airbags, Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist, seatbelts for all passengers and Traction Control. The body features a pedestrian safe hood and a breakaway engine that collapses the shaft away from the passenger area.

VERDICT

The Subaru XV Crosstrek does great justice to what it simply means - Crossover Vehicle. It’s a proper compact and stylish offroader with full-time four-wheel drive and some serious ground clearance poised to take on all your urban adventures. No doubt that the XV is going to be the best-seller in Subaru’s line-up here in Nepal, because it’s a very tempting package with styling and functionality that ticks all the boxes. The XV’s also got surprisingly good off-road ability to go with the stellar on-road dynamics. Subaru has blended SUV capability with exhilarating handling, innovative design and electrifying lines.

4WD and AWD EXPLAINED Whether you drive a hatchback or an SUV, all that power under your vehicle’s hood is useless if the engine's torque doesn't get to the drive-wheels. Many drivers have common misconceptions about 4WD and AWD systems. New innovations in four-wheel and allwheel drive have only made that confusion worse for new drivers. So, we’ve decided to help explain the hype surrounding the 4WD and AWD systems.

What is 4WD? Most cars on the road today move by using two wheels, either through the rear (RWD) or the front (FWD). 4WD, on the other hand, uses all four wheels to move the car forward. By mobilizing all four wheels, it can move the vehicle even if one of the wheels doesn’t have traction. This system powers all four wheels at all times and aids in stable driving off-road – on sandy, muddy or slippery surfaces. The 4WD system is normally used on large SUV Four-Wheel Drive (4x4) vehicles. In this system, power goes from the transmission to a transfer case where it is divided between front and rear axles. There are two types of 4WD systems: Part-Time 4WD – It refers to a system that can only be used part of the time in four wheel drive. The part-time 4WD was created to provide a vehicle with more traction to either carry maximum loads or to travel in rough terrains. Part-time 4WD systems have to be used in 2WD mode on pavement, cement or other hard, sticky surfaces. They are designed to be engaged only in specific situations when you need extra traction and damage can occur if driven on hard surfaces. Part-Time 4WD usually includes 2WD and two speeds range Hi and Lo. Some vehicles with part56

AUTOLIFE July 2014

time 4WD are Jeep Wrangler and Toyota Tundra etc. Full-Time 4WD – It refers to a 4-wheeldrive system that can be operated at all times on all surfaces. In full time 4WD, the torque is supplied to all four wheels at all the time. It can be used on all surfaces including the pavement. Typical lever or switch settings available on full-time 4WD are 4WD Hi and 4WD Lo. The additional feature of a differential incorporated into the transfer case makes it possible to use 4WD all the time. Some vehicles with full time 4WD are Land Rover, Range Rover, Toyota Prado etc. What is AWD? All-Wheel Drive (AWD) is similar to full time 4WD because it also powers the all four wheels of a vehicle at all times. They work on all surfaces but due to the lack of “low range”, AWD vehicles are much less robust as compared with 4WD. They are less effective in off-road settings. In an AWD system, each system has a different front-to-rear power delivery ratio. In this system, sensors monitor traction, speed and other data. Computers determine power to be generated on each wheel. There are two types of AWD systems:

Full time AWD – It is similar to the full time 4WD but it lacks the slow speed torque enhancing low range feature. It is not intended for off-road conditions. The focus of full-time AWD is to impose on-road stability and performance. Some examples of full time AWD vehicles are recent Mercedes M-Class, Subaru Forester etc. Automatic AWD – It was created mainly as a stability enhancing system. Automatic AWD can be used full time on all surfaces. However, they lack off-roading capabilities. Some examples include the new-generation Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV, etc.

The 4WD system is normally used on large SUV Four-Wheel Drive (4x4) vehicles.

Some 4WD Facts • The first 4WD vehicle was designed by Ferdinand Porsche (founder of Porsche cars). He designed the vehicle when he was 25 years old. • First mechanical 4WD was built by the Dutch company Jacobus Spyker in 1902. • Four Wheel drive auto company (FWD) built the first US vehicle in 1911. FWD supplied 4WD trucks to both British and US Marines during WW1. • The first 4WD Formula 1 racing car was the Ferguson P99 Climax. It was the first 4WD car and the last front-engine car to ever bag a spot in a F1 event. • The most radical 4WD vehicle is one made by a Russian armourcar builder Russo Baltique called Dartz Prombron Monacco Red Diamond Edition which was claimed to be the world's most expensive vehicle at a time. • World's first pedal powered 4WD vehicle was created by a German fellow, Frank Fraune and called it the Trailcart. The Trailcart is a metamorphosis of a mountain bike and 4WD with 290 Nm of torque. • Australians are the world's biggest buyers of 4WD vehicles.

THE SUV EXPERIENCE SUV has experienced its ups and downs on the market. However, today, the SUV is a popular choice for those seeking utility, cargo space, and passenger space in a vehicle. Further, the SUV has evolved from a vehicle sought after for its towing capacity and offroading capabilities, to a luxury vehicle with customisable features and accessories. And because of its versatility, it has also become immensely popular in the Nepalese market. To know how it feels like to ride one in our roads, we interviewed a few owners and here is what they had to say:

1. What SUV do u drive?

I currently drive a Ford Ranger 2.2 XLT

AVASH NIROLA

MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT AND TRAINER

2. Why did u choose to drive a SUV?

Well firstly it was because of the performance for the segment and it's the highest rated pick-up in the market. 3. Do you think there are any drawbacks of riding one?

In my experience size is the biggest drawback. In the city, it's a big hassle. However, on the highway, she rides like a dream. 4. One situation when you were thankful for riding a SUV in Nepal.

Just recently, on my trip to the east, the Ranger fell in a ditch that was not visible to me. Thankfully, the 4x4 function came to the rescue. I was actually happy with what it did. 5. What’s your dream vehicle and why?

Hmm...There are a lot, depending in the ride type and terrain. But if I had to pick one for this moment it would be the Range Rover Sport. Would love to take it around Nepal, over the hills and far away. 60

VIVEK BASNYAT 1. What SUV do u drive?

Currently I drive what I call a Yeti XLT, which is stock 3.2ltr Ford Ranger XLT that has been upgraded using Ironman Manufactured and tested performance parts such as Foam Cell Shocks/struts, larger coil springs, thicker cold pressed leaf springs, 3mm cold pressed steel under vehicle protection guards (front, gear box, and fuel tank), 3 inch big bore exhaust upgrade complete from the manifold, snorkel (Ram air intake), chassis mounted bull bar with heavy winch (plasma rope), chassis mounted rear step bar with heavy duty tow ball integrated with a 20ltr Jerry can holder and spare tire mount built on operating on large pin and bearing swivel system, automated dual battery system, licensed UHF communications system and mid-range antenna, additional 30 micron diesel pre-filter, truck bed roll bar, ROPS (internal Roll Over Protection System), HID Supernova Lights, 30 watt LED Spot and flood fights with heavy duty relays, fuses, and wiring. Yes, it's an "Indomitable Beast" and there will be more coming!

capable. I like taking the "unbeaten path" so if you see/find a freshly excavated trail/ track chances are I've already been up it. Furthermore I operate off road expeditions so I need a workhorse that can deliver and get abused. There are some good and "pretty" SUVs out there but unless you’re the Government, a Diplomatic Mission, or an INGO enjoying duty free status they are just too expensive and if you get one you might as well treat them like a Mercedes rather than an SUV. 3. Do you think there are any drawbacks of riding one?

Generally the Size of an SUV in Kathmandu can be difficult to manage. You can't take an SUV in narrow roads without sometimes sweating bullets. I use my XLT daily and it’s pretty big; but I believe if you are an experienced driver that can anticipate the reckless nature and sometimes irrational driving behaviour of others on the road you will be fine. Most stray clear of my bull bar!

2. Why did u choose to drive a SUV?

4. One situation when you were thankful for riding a SUV in Nepal.

There would be some that call a pickup truck a "Poor Man's SUV" but they don’t realize they are actually the "Smart Man's SUV". My work and the overall versatility of Pickups is the sole reason I drive one and to be honest I haven't been able to find anything more cost effective and

Oh God there are too many situations. Honestly look at the poor quality of the roads and their never ending construction. What irritates me the most is people digging up a freshly paved road to put in a new pipe to the sewer system then not bothering to repave. Let’s say there

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

are more than a few people I've rescued that are thankful I have a capable SUV! Furthermore I never feel limited to the paved road so I'm thankful I can always choose to go which ever path I choose and leave the rest watching and wishing! 5. What’s your dream vehicle and why?

I like getting "out here" so it would have to be the indomitable Land Cruiser 70 Series as it is the undisputed 'tough as nails' workhorse. Having traversed over a million paths around the world and bashed its way in and out of mines, jungles, mountains, through construction sites and up farm trails, the LC 70 series has earned an undeniable reputation for versatility, ruggedness and dependability. If you want what i honestly believe is the world's toughest 4WD, for work, towing, or extensive off-road travel, this is it! It has a proven and tested unstoppable 4.2-litre diesel engine which dishes out 96 kW at 3800 rpm while offering a an amazing 285 Nm of torque from a low 2200 rpm. They come standard with the real "goodies" such as differential locks, five-speed manual gearbox and four-wheel drive system with hardy low-range transfer box for mind blowing off-road ability. Also worth noting is the impressive ground clearance – the 79 Pick-up variants are 235 mm above the ground, allowing the vehicle to tackle almost any off-road condition. AUTOLIFE July 2014 61

AUTOLIFE EVOLUTION

Jeep: An American Icon Everybody loves Jeep. Although Jeep vehicles are now owned by the Chrysler group, the word "Jeep" is understood everywhere around the globe. Jeep is one of those instantly recognized vehicles that is admired and loved by millions of people across the world. The word ‘’Jeep” has become synonymous with fourwheel drives, and for good reasons no other automobile marquee has ever inspired the kind of respect and affection that Jeep has. The term is used to refer what are now known as SUVs, whether the nameplate carries the Jeep tag or not. Few American vehicles are as universally iconic as the Jeep. Originally conceived and created in 1941 as an off-road buggy to help the Allies win World War II, Jeep played a triumphant role in battle-fields. Being small and compact, it could be transported to battle-fields by plane, dropped by parachute, or floated across a river. 64

AUTOLIFE July 2014

Throughout the years the Jeep has proved it could do just anything and go just about anywhere. Over its 70year of history the parent company of Jeep has changed a few times, but the heart of the Jeep brand has remained the same. With so many Jeep vehicles making their way over the past 70 years, we’ve chosen to concentrate our next few pages on the timeline and history of popular Jeep models. The birth of a Hero

By 1939 the US military needed a new, universal vehicle to replace the motorcycle and its other vehicles (such as the modified Ford Model-T), so they invited different car companies to compete for a contract to build a new rugged and reliable vehicle for the military. The new vehicle had to meet certain specifications such as a payload capacity of 600lbs, a wheelbase under 75 inches, a fold-down windshield, a gross vehicle weight

of under 1200lbs, and a fourwheel drive. Only three companies entered the competition, Bantam, Willys-Overland, and Ford. Bantam enlisted the help of Karl Probst, and in 1940 was the first to produce a working prototype for the military but failed to meet the army’s torque requirements. Willys-Overland and Ford soon followed with their own prototypes, the Willys Quad and the Ford Pygmy. Willys eventually won the contract because of their 60hp “Go-Devil” engine, and thus in July 1941, the legend was born. Throughout the years

Post World-War II, Jeep’s 4x4 technologies gave birth to a lineage of civilian vehicles. The famous CJ-2A was marketed by the company as ‘The All-Around Farm Work-Horse’ which was targeted towards the agriculture industry. TheCJ-3A was another famous model. The CJ-3A is still considered by many to be the father of recreation vehicles. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Other notable models included the Willys Wagon, Willys-Overland Truck and Jeepster (VJ) The 50’s saw the rise of the recreational vehicles, as well as the brand’s engineering superiority. Seven unique models were launched. Out of them, the M-38, the CJ-5, and the FC-170 truck became successful. The company began to diversify Jeep brand beyond the short-wheelbase flat fender. They also promoted their vehicles as suitable for women drivers and college graduates. In the next decade, Jeep-brand line-up grew to 14 models. In 1962, the brand introduced the Wagoneer which is considered as the father of all luxury 4x4 SUV's. Models like the J-2000, J-3000 Series Pickup (SJ) and Gladiator Series pickup represented unparalleled refinement and innovation. The 70’s saw the launch of the first full-time 4x4 system. Jeep

vehicles bagged the 4WD of the year awards throughout the decade. In the 80’s, Jeep revolutionized the 4x4 market. The company introduced industry firsts - first compact 4 doors SUV, first UniFrame construction, and first full 4x4 systems with shift-on-the-fly capability on their vehicles. Jeep entered the new millennia with the new Grand Cherokee, Wrangler (TJ), Rubicon Wrangler and several new models like the Patriot and Compass which have set new benchmarks with both on-and-off road capability vehicles. Current Models As of now, Jeep has six products in its portfolio- Jeep Patriot, Jeep Compass, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. You can read more about the current models of Jeep on Autolife Nepal’s Volume 2 Issue 10.

The Name The origin of Jeep name actually came from the two letter abbreviation – GP, which stood for a military General Purpose vehicle. It is also very likely that in 1940’s, the cartoon character Popeye called GP and hence the name Jeep stuck. The Cherokee Legend The Jeep Cherokee model was meant to represent the civility and ruggedness of the famous Native American Cherokee tribe. National Hero Right after the Second World War a battered Jeep that survived two beach landings ended up receiving a Purple Heart. The Purple Heart is a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the President to those wounded or killed, while serving, on or after April 5, 1917, with the U.S. military. Doors Jeep is the only vehicle in the world that allows you to take the doors off. Accessories Jeep is the most popular brand among people who like to modify their vehicles. It’s also the most popular brand in terms of variety of accessories offered.

CYCLING CHALLENGE: RIDING FOR A GOOD CAUSE

70

AUTOLIFE July 2014

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Cycling as a sport and recreational activity has gained massive popularity in the nation and has grown leaps and bounds as a business. With an abundance of trails a stone’s throw away, Kathmandu is the ideal city for cycling enthusiasts in the Capital; while for enthusiasts around the world (and within the country), the trails waiting to be shred in the nooks and crannies of the geographically blessed terrains are an alluring prospect.

The cycling community of Nepal is also growing in equal proportion. More and more people are involving themselves in cycling and it is common practice for riders to reserve Saturdays for group (or individual) rides. Of course, there is one such Saturday that stands out. Every year, for the past 3 years, riders from all over Nepal and some from across nations gather in the capital on the third Saturday of July to ride together for a cause and to meet their individual challenges. Socailtours, operated by a lively group under the leadership of Mr. Raj Gyanwali, and in unison with Save The Children Nepal have been organizing and conducting the Kathmandu Kora since 2011. This year, the Kathmandu Kora is going to take place on the 19th of July. We talked with Raj Gyanwali, from Social Tours about the challenge.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

What has Kathmandu Kora Cycling Challenge been doing and what does 2014 have in store?

The event had comparatively modest beginnings in 2011. 16 year old Maxim Jones from the UK came to Nepal to volunteer at SAMATA School, Boudha and at OCCED Orphanage, Naxal. He had an idea to raise some funds for these two projects. Socialtours suggested conducting a Cycling Challenge around Kathmandu, and connecting the challenge with the fund raising. Along with Shishlang Lama, another 16 year, the duo and 35 other riders pledged and rode for a school and orphanage in Kathmandu raising half a million Rupees. In the second year of the event, almost 300 riders turned up. Social Tours began working with Save the Children and the EVERYONE CAMPAIGN. The pledged money, which summed up to Rs. 1 million, was provided to improve the birthing facilities in the remote district of Rukum. In 2013, the third edition of Kora, the

number of participants went through the roof. The event began gaining massive recognition as more than 800 riders participated in the efforts to raise money to build a birthing facility in Sharmali, Baitadi in the Far-Western Region of Nepal. Rs. 1.7 million was raised for the cause. With the motto ‘No Child Born to Die’ of the Every One campaign of Save the Children, these locations had been chosen due to their lack of birthing services that was taking innocent lives. The health centers available in these locations did not have power 24 hours which obstructed nurses from using all the equipments. Post delivery services and the birthing center’s infrastructure were far from being up to par, and various other problems plagued these regions. Because of the remote nature of these areas, these problems were significant and to some extent not entirely surprising. This year, however, the cause that Kathmandu Kora Cycling Challenge 2014 has targeted is much closer to the city. Situated at an astonishingly close approximation to Kathmandu, Pyutar is located in South Lalitpur. It is a remote VDC that does not have the proper birthing facilities… yet. Shifting their focus from the less developed regions of Nepal to a region much closer to the capital, Kathmandu Kora 2014 is planning to raise up to Rs. 2 million this year to build an Eco-Designed building, providing the best facilities to the women and children in this remote VDC. The enthusiasm shown by Pyutar, and its locals, towards the initiative is also very encouraging.

How does the Kathmandu Kora work?

The parameters for the Kathmandu Kora are very simple. Riders get together to participate in the ride which is meant to be a circumambulation of Kathmandu. You can register as a participant in the rally via their website or just go pay them a visit. You can also register as a sponsor or pledger and pledge an amount for each rider or just for the cause. Overall, the rally has been segmented into 3 categories: the 50kms, the 75kms and the 100kms. Now, which segment suits you depends upon your skill levels. In the 50k ride, the starting point is at Patan Durbar Square. The route then goes on to Kirtipur via Chhobar, into Naikap, behind Soyambhunath, the White Stupa, then to Balaju Water Gardens, and then Manamaiju, Dhapasi, over the road into Budanilkantha towards Boudha. After a lunch stop at Boudha riders will return to Patan Durbar Square from behind the airport and Pepsi Cola. For those riders who are up for a more challenging route can opt for the 75k or even the 100k. Apart from being longer in distance, these routes also take the technical aspects to more difficult levels. Where does the money come from? There is no registration fee required. The money actually comes from all the pledges. Ideally, riders are requested to raise Rs. 100 per kilometer through your family and friends; but this is completely voluntary. Riders can also pledge an amount they find comfortable. The money that is raised comes from the goodness of people’s hearts. Pledging any amount of money is helpful towards the cause.

AUTOLIFE July 2014

Since the numbers have been growing, this yearly event is gaining a lot of recognition. Efforts are also being made to make it a global event. If the event is able to reach higher scales, involvement of business juggernauts is expected. Although no apparent reach out has been made towards any companies by the organizers, it would be good to see companies and cooperatives volunteering to become angel donors. Luckily, the prospects seem very likely. Since it is for a good cause, it would be great to see this happening in the future. Can amateur riders participate?

Because of the varying difficulties, the range of riders varies in terms of age and skill levels. Everyone is welcome to participate, from amateur riders to the hardcore professionals. This year, the likes of Ajay Pandit Chhetri and Narayan Gopal Maharjan (professional riders of Nepal) are participating. For budding amateur riders, this is a great opportunity to ride together with more experienced riders and actually get a chance to learn from them instead of just watching their rear ends disappear into the horizon ahead. The segmentation of the rides into 50k, 75k and 100k was done to accommodate all interested participants regardless of their skill level. But if you are not able complete the rally, it isn’t a big deal. The KORA is designed for the possibility of shortening the trip whenever required. At any point you will be no further than an hour from home, for those who live in Kathmandu. Sign up today! Go to www.kathmandukora. net to learn more.

AUTOLIFE FEATURE

THE FEMALE DRIVERS IN NEPAL The ongoing age-old debate about which sex is better behind the wheels might be a common occurrence on the other side of the Globe, but us Nepalese will not degrade to such levels of controversies. We tend to keep simple by accepting the fact that women are bad drivers, and ending the entire debate at that. Statements like “Keti harulai gaadi chalauna depachi accident ta hune nai bhayo ni!” (Accidents on the roads are inevitable when you let women drivers drive on the road) are less a sexist remark than it is a common opinion. The feeble arguments form women drivers are trampled by the overwhelming majority of the male dominated society. Nepali men have their minds made up about the issue and if it were up to them, they’d probably ban women drivers from getting on the roads completely. It’s surprising someone hasn’t suggested building a separate road for women yet. The scrutiny faced by women drivers is not a debate, but an accepted fact. However, it is very surprising that the absence of the male reproductive organ plays such a negative effect on one’s driving capabilities. In fact, if you really think about it, the lack of “obstruction” should actually benefit the female driver. If we are going to play the gender card, assuming men are rash creatures that strive on impulsive decisions and testosterone 76

AUTOLIFE July 2014

driven rage and courage wouldn’t be too far off the target. That would make women prissy damsels who are overly cautious and maybe less courageous than men to some extent. Theoretically, that would make the latter category less of a road hazard. Here’s the proof. According to the personnel of the Traffic Police Department of Gaushala, the primary reasons of on road accidents involving male drivers and riders are due to excessive speeding, haphazard overtaking and all around testosterone fuelled stupidity. Most of these accidents turn out with bad consequences and are usually categorized as major incidents. Taking into consideration the ratio of male drivers/riders to female drivers/ riders, proportionately, women do apparently get into more accidental incidents. Sadly, the causes of these accidents were due to negligence and lack of focus while on the road; and this doesn’t really help this case. On the brighter side, women drivers and riders are found less likely to be taking unnecessary risks. Speeding and rash driving don’t fall under their list of demerits either. Also, the accidents that female riders/drivers are found to be involved in are minor cases. To sum it up, women get into more on road accidents than men. But the majority of them are fender benders, mainly due to the fact that women tend to stay under the speed limits and obey traffic rules. Albeit, women tend to get into these accidents for all

the wrong reasons as lack of focus and negligence has no room when it comes to driving. In comparison to the women, male drivers/riders do get into fewer crashes. However, the accidents end in gruesome manner wrapping cars around poles, spinning out and often causing casualties. In this case, negligence is not the issue, but lack of adherence to traffic rules and safety is the culprit. Now, which would you deem more hazardous? Frequent fender benders or occasional massacres on the roads? Is a slightly negligent but law abiding and calm driver a better driver or does a confident but a hasty rash driver fare better? There are several female drivers/riders who get on the road on a daily basis and operate under the traffic rules and serve as the ideal road users. The number of female tempo drivers as well as motorcyclists is increasing. More and more female car and scooter drivers can be seen on the roads. Blanket statements categorizing the driving skills of a person based on their gender are not suitable assessors for judging whether a driver is good or bad. Driving accidents are more the consequences of one’s own driving skills rather than the gender of the person behind the wheels. Sexist remarks and thinking do nothing to better the already faltering nature of Nepal’s male dominated society.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

What do you think about the myth on men being a better driver?

ANISH SHRESTHA

Co- founder, Yellow Nepal Stereotypes exist because of patterns seen in society, but the statement that women are worse drivers than men is not accurate. I have seen some women who drive better than men and some who do not drive so well. And after all it all depends upon one’s experience, why make it about gender at all?

CHAHANA SIGDEL Freelance Journalist

Well I think it’s absolutely baseless and sexist. Men think driving is something manly and steering the wheel should be a men's job. I think this is just a way to discourage women from taking the driver's seat. It just reflects how societies try to curtail woman from performing activities.

DENNIS SHRESTHA

Marketing & Event Coordinator, Royal Events Well in my opinion, this is nothing more than a gender stereotype. Not all men can drive well either. Safe driving has more to do with one’s own driving skills and knowledge, rather than one’s gender, so one just can’t claim that men are better drivers just considering a few men who drive very well. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
