EDITORIAL PRE-NADA AUTOSHOW
A
A decade ago, Bajaj gave rise to the era of the bikers with their release of the Pulsar series. It quickly became an iconic name and its popularity sore tremendously. A string of successful models followed through the years, which brings us to what has been christened the fastest Pulsar yet. This month we straddle the RS200 and relive the nostalgic experience of riding a Pulsar. This month of AutoLife is brimming to the top with exciting content. We test drive the Hyundai Elite i20 and Tata Bolt, two of the most exciting hatchbacks that are all set to slug it out in the most competitive segments in the auto industry. More on the test drives, we have the popular Fiat Avventura which has been selling like hot cakes. Now, these new entrants come at the perfect time because right around the corner is the 2015 NADA Autoshow that is set to be held in September. Like all the auto enthusiasts of the country, we’re really excited for the commencement of the Auto Show because that means a barrage of new cars and motorcycles will be seen in the roads soon after. To help jog your memory, we have a review of what last year’s NADA Auto show brought to the table. Also in this issue, is our detailed experience of the global media launch of the Ford Figo Aspire in Udaipur, India. There is plenty of other stuff to keep you entertained in this month’s AutoLife where we have decided to go slightly content heavy. We’re sure no one is complaining though. Happy reading, and we’ll see you at the 2015 NADA AutoShow.
Cheers!

Owner’s Review I used to drive a hatchback, but I felt like it was time for a change. Although, I visited other manufacturers’ showrooms too, none of them impressed me like Skoda did. Since Skoda is a reputed name, I thought it would be a good choice while making a transition from a hatchback to a sedan. In fact, I have been very happy about my purchase. I travel frequently outside the valley due to my job profile. It is such a pleasure to drive the Rapid on the highway because of its stability. The seats are comfortable making the sedan excellent for long drives. The car is quite powerful too and has a good ground clearance making it really suitable for our bumpy roads too. The sedan hasn’t let me down, not in terms of breakdowns or experience. Even on narrow roads, the Rapid fares surprisingly well. Just like the well-designed exteriors, the interiors are equally luxurious. The sedan is quite spacious and provides an ample shoulder and legroom. The sedan feels upmarket with its sporty essence.
Ashok Neupane CEO Talk Nepal Pvt. Ltd.
The after sales service provided by Skoda is by far the best that I have personally experienced. I believe that the company really works hard to satisfy its customers. The best part is they actually make an effort to call their customers to remind about the servicing dates. Hence, I believe that Skoda Rapid is a good value for money proposition and I would definitely recommend it to others seeking for a sedan.

OWNER’S REVIEW
I would like to take this opportunity to share my ownership experience of the TATA ZEST. I made up my mind to buy this compact sedan even before its launch in Nepal. During that period, I came in contact with Mr. Sarad Lamichhane of Sipradi Trading who described the car to me and hence, I got impressed and went ahead with my purchase decision. The exterior of the car is sharply designed adding a good masculine touch to the overall appearance. The Zest’s ground clearance of 175mm is best in its class and perfect for our roads. The Zest has exceptional shoulder and head room and is the most spacious cabin in its class. The built in multi-drive mode of the TataZest lets you switch between three different driving modes: Sport, Eco and City, giving you the power of 3 engines in 1. I was also impressed with the next-gen Harman infotainment system which is loaded with best-in-class features like touchscreen control for music, temperature, and voice controlled actions. Similarly, the dual SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) air bags of the Zest enhance the safety of the driver and co-driver. I personally get an economy of 12kmpl within Kathmandu valley which is decent in its segment. The after sales service of Sipradi Trading is absolutely up to the mark satisfaction for customers. Overall its good value for money with great looks, performance and comfort. I would like to congratulate TATA Motors for working hard in passenger car segment and innovating cars like Zest.

Hyundai Elite i20

Hyundai had left us scratching our heads when they came out with the i20 Active before the Elite. As the convention goes, the crossover follows its platform model. The Ecosport succeeded the Fiesta, Avventura came after the Punto and the Cross Polo trailed the Polo. We didn’t think much about it and went ahead with the task at hand; test driving the i20 Active last month. That left us in anticipation of what we had heard was one of the hottest hatchbacks in recent times. Considering the success the i20 enjoyed in the premium hatchback segment from its debut in 2008 till present, we couldn’t help but buy into the hype. And our anticipation grew, especially when the Active turned out to be really good. Thankfully, we didn’t have to wait too long to get our hands on the much talked about Elite i20. With the responsibility of living up to one of the most popular models from the Hyundai roster, the Elite i20 had its work cut out for it. The high stake pursuit of market share is continuously ongoing in the automotive market and Hyundai have been one of the most prolific contenders. We test if their new hatchback would follow suit. This is the test drive of the Hyundai Elite i20.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
Exterior When it comes to good looking cars Hyundai have been hitting the nail on the head in the last decade with their fluidic designs which have been getting better and better. The Elite i20 follows Hyundai Fluidic Design 2.0 tradition and is one of the best looking cars you will find in its segment. Hyundai have left behind the curvy design of the first gen model and opted for more crisp lines and features, making the Elite i20 more edgy and aggressive. Although not as flashy as the Verna or Elantra, the Elite carries off a mature persona. The front face features a large hexagonal radiator grille & swept-back headlamps along with fog lamps giving the hatchback a premium feel. In matters of size, Hyundai have sided with girth instead of length. The wheelbase has been increased slightly, it is marginally wider but it is also slightly shorter in length. Sloping roof lines and a long bonnet give the side profile a sporty appeal. The fat tyres and 16mm rims help with the sporty aesthetics as well as aid in giving the Elite a more planted stance. The rear upholds the entire premium feel that the rest of the car provides. It is well sculpted and the wide tail lamps are what
give the rear a major style element. The protruding rearview camera could have been better integrated. Quality has been kept as a priority and it is evident from the Elite’s build quality which doesn’t feel flimsy or fickle in anyway.
Interiors and Features Although the Hyundai Elite i20 is jam packed with features, much in line with Hyundai tradition, it doesn’t bring anything spectacularly new to the plate. Some features have been surprisingly removed from its predecessors. You won’t be able to get a variant with 6 air bags, rear disc brakes, DRLs, sunroof and rain-sensing automatic wipers. However, that doesn’t imply that had gone stingy and stripped the hatchback of important features. The top variant we test drove (the Asta), featured driver and passenger side airbags with ABS with brake assist and EBD (Electronic brakeforce distribution) which automatically varies the amount of force applied to each of a vehicle’s brakes, based on road conditions, speed, loading, etc.). Hyundai have also incorporated the smart pedal which disengages the accelerator on the off chance that you depress the brakes and accelerator at the same time. Other features include auto headlamps, additional 12V power outlet, adjustable rear neck

THE NEW DASHBOARD HAS A PLETHORA OF BUTTONS THAT LETS YOU FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH ITS FEATURES. restraints, rear wash & wipe, 60:40 splitting rear seat, steering position reminder, parking sensor display and more. Step inside and you’ll notice that the cabin is spacious, well-laid out with impeccable fit and finish. The new dashboard has a plethora of buttons that lets you familiarize yourself with its features. A black and beige colour theme is classy and appealing. The front seats provide excellent lateral support and the underthigh support is adequate. The rear is comfortable as well. The steering wheel is wide and has a good feel. It has integrated thumb contours. You can control the audio, phone & MID via a total of 9 buttons (including a useful one for ‘mute’). The overall ergonomics have been well thought out. The center console has been angled toward the driver for easy access. The MID (Multi Information Display) offers a wide range of data, including dual trip meters, exterior temperature, digital speedometer, service interval and a drive summary (distance covered, average speed, driving time) when you switch the car off. When you switch the car on, the MID will warn you if you have parked with your front wheels turned. There are other cool features which make the Elite a great car. The rear wiper has an intermittent function, and also automatically starts wiping if you engage reverse gear with the front wipers on. If you switch off the car with the headlamps & fog lamps on, the ‘battery saver’ feature automatically turns them off. The power windows have a delay feature, allowing them to be operated for a few seconds after switching the car 40

off. Approach the i20 with the smart key in your pocket and the ORVMs will automatically fold out. The climate control is very effective and the audio system accepts aux, USB and Bluetooth with easy functionality. Reversing camera display is neatly integrated on the left of the IRVM but because of the small rear window and thick c pillars, rear visibility is slightly hampered.
PERFORMANCE The Elite i20 is a great car to drive, especially in the city. The 1.2L Dual VTVT Kappa petrol we drove produces 82 BHP @ 6000 rpm and 115 Nm of torque @ 4000 rpm. The engine is extremely smooth and does its part inside the city; its initial short drive ratio helps with city driving. It gets you from point A to B without any complaints and power delivery is decent enough for sedate drivers. The 5 speed gear box is seamless and a pleasure to drive. You will have to work the engine if you encounter steep inclines and are loaded with passengers. On the highway it holds up its own but it isn’t as comfortable when it comes to making quick overtaking maneuvers. The ride quality is pleasant and fares well with road undulations at mild speeds. Superior damping characteristics have made the new i20 less bouncy in the rear. Steering is light in the city and maneuvering is easy. Despite the lack of a rear disc, there is no room for complaints when it comes to the Elite’s speed shedding capabilities.

AUTOLIFE August 2015 41
Verdict The Elite i20 had big shoes to fill, and that might just be an understatement. Design wise the new generation of the i20 has matured. It doesn’t follow the curvy designs of the previous i20 nor is it flamboyant like the Sonata or Verna. However, it is very easy on the eyes and scores high marks amongst the premium hatchback segment. Performance inside the city is very good, and for the sedate driver it is capable of hitting the highways as well. Handling has been improved which makes the Elite a pleasure to drive. So this is a very good looking car with good performance. Despite the sub sedan segment and crossover SUVs becoming popular, the premium hatchback segment hasn’t taken the back seat; and Hyundai have done a splendid job with the Elite i20. It definitely falls amongst our favorites. 42

Just as we were beginning to wonder why Ford had been so quiet lately, we get whiff of preparations for a new product launch. Not too long after that, we receive an invitation from the people at Go Ford to attend the media launch of a product christened as the Ford Figo Aspire- a sub sedan. From what we have observed, cramping a sedan under the four meter mark is either a hit or miss. Most of the sub-4 meter cars have been difficult to fall in love with at first sight. So we were slightly skeptical about how the new Figo Aspire would be. On the upside though, the stuff we saw on the internet was really promising. Keeping

a positive attitude, I represented team AutoLife and set off for the City of Lakes. But before anything else, we would like to say that we at AutoLife are highly grateful to GO Ford, the authorized distributors for Ford vehicles in Nepal, for having ensured our participation in this ‘Deep Technical Dive and Drive’ event for the Ford Figo Aspire in Udaipur. It makes doing what we do a lot more pleasurable. Along with us were Mr. Terence Lee from The Himalayan Times and Mr. Hari Bahadur Thapa from Kantipur Dailies. After familiarizing with each other some airplane food (which could have been better), the three of us landed at the Indira Gandhi Airport in Delhi. I wanted to get the taste of the terrible airplane food out from my mouth so I got myself a wadaa pau, let the Indian experience begin. We switched terminals and flew towards Udaipur where the main event would be taking place. Upon arrival at the airport, someone was waiting for us with a placard. This is where I got a taste of the infamous Indian driving styles along with unexpected run-ins with
cattle on the roads. I was able to fully unclench by butt when we reached the picturesque Trident Hotel where we were greeted with tika and a friendly smile. The hotel was magnificent and looked like something straight out of a Mughal tale of the Royals; beautiful would be an understatement. The three of us were given instructions about the itinerary and shown to our personal rooms. It was evident the people at Ford Motor Company in India knew how to treat their auto journalists. By the time we unpacked and took a tour of the amazing hotel it was time for the media deep dive. Inside a massive tent by the poolside, the Ford Figo Aspire took center stage. Now remember, for me and the rest of us at AutoLife the sub sedans have been a difficult segment to get right in terms of visual appeal. However, the Aspire was a different case. The AstonMartin-esque front grille was an instant winner and everything seemed to flow perfectly from there. Even the often botched rear didn’t seem to be too much of a downer. All in all, it looked like a very good looking car. AUTOLIFE August 2015 47

Mr. Anurag Mehrotta (Ford India Executive Director, Marketing, Sales and Service), began the media tech deep dive with other members of Ford joining in to explain the Aspire and its features. Ford has left no stone unturned. It is the first in its segment to offer 2 airbags and ABS through all variants, something that will catch the fancy of every family man/woman looking to buy a compact sedan. The Mykey, hill start control, along with other nifty add-ons like a concealed space in the side of the dashboard were exciting.
us through the city of Udaipur and then the open highway stretches. 7 spanking new Aspires were line up for the media to test out. Everything seemed to be very well organized. Each car was paired with a support vehicle and radio connection. Me and Terrance were assigned to the same car and I opted to become copilot for the start of the test drive. That meant Terrance had to suffer through my playlist that was last updated when the Black Eyed Peas were the topping the charts. Well, at least we knew the Bluetooth audio system worked properly.
A lavish buffet followed where Mr. Abhishek Mahapatra, Product Strategy Manager-Communications at Ford Motor Company Asia Pacific, accompanied me and the guys over some of the best Mughlai food I ever had. Our discussions ranged from the post earthquake scenario, to our favorite cuisines and also the prospects of holding the launch of the Ford Endeavour in Upper Mustang (EXCITING!). After a few drinks I decided to call it a night to get some rest for the test drive tomorrow.
Terrance was beginning to find his footing with the devil may care attitude and weaving in and out of traffic. 17 cows, a camel and countless motorcycles with 2 pillions later, we became more accustomed to the Indian ways. Soon, we entered the highway and I had a go in the Aspire. The eager 1.5L diesel engine felt refined and was raring to go at a drop of a hat. It provided great pulling power throughout the rev ranges. The wide open stretches of kilometer after kilometer of tarmac was the best driving road I had ever had the fortune of driving on. So naturally, I was inclined to floor the pedal which I did. I topped out at a 140km/h. There was
The next day began with a hearty breakfast and preparations for the 200km test drive that would be taking

enough road for me to have gone faster but Terrance began grabbing for parts of the car and I thought it best to not push my luck, especially when there abnormally many vehicles driving on the wrong side of the road. On the way back, everyone switched cars and we got a chance to test out the 1.2L petrol variant. But if I had to choose, the diesel would come out on top. There is also a 1.5L petrol automatic variant available for buyers. We ended the day by stopping for lunch at the exquisite Hotel Leela Palace where, as an unexpected bonus, we got to try an authentic Rajasthani dish (dal baati churma) that Mr. Anurag insisted we try. And we’re glad we did.
Overall, the Ford Figo Aspire is a promising new offering from Ford that has full potential to do very well in the market. In terms of design and aesthetics, this might become a quick favorite in its segment. This could also give the Aspire a competitive advantage in the segment. Read more in the detailed test drive in next month’s AutoLife.

TATA BOLT TWO IN A ROW
WORDS&PHOTOS: AUTOLIFE TEAM

AUTOLIFE August 2015

D Despite the fact that it is not as glamorized and flashy as other marquees, Tata Motors (under Sipradi) is a juggernaut in the automotive industry of Nepal. Not too long ago, Tata motors trailed behind competition when it came to fancy features and designs. However, thanks to its practicality and value for money, it commanded a major part of the market share without focusing as much on the glitz and glamour. But over the past few years Tata has improved on its short comings. Now it has come out stronger with products that are feature heavy and scoring high on the designs and aesthetics. The Zest was a game changer for Tata. It was a fresh product with the latest features and modern-day technology under its skin. Although Tata has a stronghold with the Storme, it is important to broaden their hold; and that brings us to the Tata Bolt. If the hatchback segment was not competitive enough, the Bolt will be competing with the likes of Swifts and Grand i10s; some of the most popular offerings in the market.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
EXTERIOR Tata designers have worked with the Zest as the platform for the Bolt and the design cues are similar to the sub-sedan. The styling is neat and not so subtle that it doesn’t demand attention. The well sculpted front end has wraparound projector headlights on either side of a piano black honeycomb like grille. The top variant that we featured also has day light running lights in the driving light cavities which give it a lot of character. Fog lamps also come into the picture.
TATA DESIGNERS HAVE WORKED WITH THE ZEST AS THE PLATFORM FOR THE BOLT AND THE DESIGN CUES ARE SIMILAR TO THE SUB-SEDAN.
Shoulder lines run through the sides to transition into the bootless rear. The increased ground clearance gives it a taller appearance. The C-pillar is blacked out to give a floating roof effect and flows well with the rear windscreen. The rear is stylish and simplistic as well. A thick chrome strip sits above the number plate on the tailgate. Vertical tail lamps, smaller than the clunky ones on the Indica, is a nice improvement. A gloss black insert has been added to fill the gap between the pillar and the glass. AUTOLIFE August 2015 53
INTERIORS AND FEATURES The all-black interior of the Tata Bolt is a spacious affair, class leading in fact. The steering wheel is meaty and has a great feel. The hexagonal horn pad will have you stretching your finger to reach it but the silver accents are a great detail. The steering also hosts controls to the volume, mute button that also works as a play/pause button, answer button and search switch for the audio.
THE BOLT IS JAM PACKED WITH FEATURES THAT GIVE THE TATA A PREMIUM FEEL. EVERYTHING LOOKS RATHER UPMARKET WITH THE WHITE BACKLIGHT.
The Bolt is jam packed with features that give the Tata a premium feel. Everything looks rather upmarket with the white backlight. MID is comprehensive. It displays the currently selected gear, suggests upshifts or downshifts (via a tiny arrow), fuel efficiency, distance to empty, outside temperature and exactly which door is open. Trip A & B display their respective average fuel efficiency. The graphical bar for instantaneous FE is always shown & is easy to refer to while driving. The Harman-developed 5 touchscreen ICE with 8 speakers & video playback is a great feature. It is easy to use and the sound quality is amazing. You can also operate the climate control directly from the touchscreen or the knobs.
PERFORMANCE The Bolt comes with two engine variants, the Quadrajet 1.3L Diesel and the 1.2L Revotron. We test drove the petrol variant that features an all-new turbocharged unit from the Zest. The 1.2-litre Revotron motor produces 90PS of max power. The max torque is of 140Nm from a lower 1,500rpm up to 4,000rpm. Power delivery is very good and it provides enough grunt to get you through the city. Not only is it a capable city slicker, it performs well on the highway

as well. It doesn’t feel overworked unless you’re going too pedal heavy. Like the Zest, the petrol version of the Bolt boasts of three driving modes: Eco, City and Sport. Switching to Sport mode gives the car a little extra oomph while the eco mode takes it all away. Driving in Eco mode, even in the city isn’t an exciting affair. It takes a little time to get going from a stop and you can almost feel the eyes burning into the back of your head from disgruntled drivers behind you. The Sport mode, however, unleashes the Bolt’s potential and it becomes a great car to drive. The electrically assisted power steering developed in association with ZF Lenksysteme who also worked on the Tata Nano is quite impressive. The brakes are a disc and drum combination and they do a good job of slowing down the car as well as bringing it to a quick halt. The slick 5-speed gearbox is also smooth and light, providing an adequate amount of finesse. However, the clutch travel is slightly longer and it’s resisting point at the top is also slightly higher than other cars.

AUTOLIFE August 2015 55
VERDICT Tata seems to have everything in good working order because the Bolt is as good of an offering as the impeccable Zest. Although Tata Motors had trouble with aesthetic appeal and popularity, it seems like a problem of the past. They seem to be catching up with competition in terms of refinement as well. As a city hatchback, the Tata Bolt ticks all the right boxes. This car is more suited to a relaxed driving style than a hurried one. It’s best to drive the Bolt sedately, work the torque and shift up early. And that is what you’d expect from a commuter hatchback. The value for money factor is also a plus as it is comparably better priced than its rivals. However, the matter of it compensating for the refinement levels it provides is a matter of opinions and priorities. All in all, the Bolt follows the Zest with vigor and proves to be one of the two best offerings that Tata have come out with in recent times.

FIAT AVVENTURA
READY FOR ADVENTURE WORDS AND PHOTOS: AUTOLIFE TEAM

AUTOLIFE August 2015
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
We’re not quite sure about exactly what goes on at the Fiat factory, but it seems that they’ve concocted some serum that has turned the docile Fiat Punto into a hulking CUV they refer to as the Avventura. Yet another entrant to the popular crossover segment, the Fiat Avventura seems like the more rugged version of the Punto. Now Fiat doesn’t really boast of having the most market share or being the most popular choice, but there is no denying that they have very good offerings in their arsenal. The fact that it is one of the biggest brand names in the auto-world helps, so does the fact that it does a decent job of upholding its European heritage. Furthermore, acquisition of the management by Life Automobiles has seemed to inject new life into the moniker and they seem more active than before. Their newest offering has a common story of coming into existence. Created on the Punto platform it is in many ways identical to the hatchback, but Fiat has also been careful to avoid being dragged into the generalization that all crossover SUVs are plastic-clad hatchbacks that are only fronting as a new product. It created a lot of buzz in the Indian market and we were extremely eager for it to come into our market, and it’s finally here.
Exterior
Right off the bat, we can tell that Fiat have put in a lot of effort to make the Avventura look beefy; they’ve gone the extra mile to make it look more muscular and they’ve even gone with the attention-grabbing spare wheel cover. This is the first thing that you will notice and you will also remember that you saw this with the Ford Ecosport. However, it is not a part of the tailgate as most would expect it to be. You have to unlock the spare wheel from the tailgate via the button on the facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

keys to spring that free and swing out horizontally and then open the boot vertically. Although it might take slightly more time to get your stuff inside the trunk, the spare wheel gives the Avventura its distinctly rugged looks. Although it holds a striking resemblance to the Punto, there are few changes that separate the Avventura from its sibling. It retains the trapezoidal front grille and swept back reindeer headlight that we personally loved. The Fiat logo stays above the grille but the front bumper gets a complete makeover, and now sports a brushed aluminium finish. The sides have been decorated with plastic claddings and a pseudo skid plate that help keep the Avventura in tune with its sense of adventure. It also features roof railings but we’re not entirely sure about how efficient it is in terms of utility (although some advertisements insist that it is perfect for transporting bicycles).
Interior and Features
There is a dual tone finish to the dash where the center console houses three distinct dials which display the clinometer, tilt-meter and compass. It is definitely interesting but we’re not quite certain of its utility. The Avventura gets other features like climate control, electric windows, a rear

AC vent and an audio system that supports CD, MP3 and Aux-in. It does have Bluetooth but it is constrained to telephony and you can’t connect your device to the audio system. The cabin space is also decent and the seats are comfortable with proper lumbar support. The seats are a mix of faux leather and fabric which are very well designed. The steering wheel is great to hold and houses the buttons for the audio system and Bluetooth telephony. The instrument cluster displays a digital clock, odometer, trip meter, distance to empty along with other telltale indications. Climate control is very effective and does a good job of cooling the cabin.
Performance

adventurous aspects about the crossover. You’ll be happy to know that the Avventura gets a 20mm increase in the ground clearance over the Punto Evo. This gives it a total of 205mm of ground clearance which has it standing tall without much of the belly scraping woes. And despite the increased height, the handling is not compromised. Although not a complete offroader, the front wheel drive can handle mild to moderate offroading. It was able to cope well with some unforeseen road construction that had the roads tattered and muddy during our test drive. We wouldn’t recommend you take it through slush though, or steep inclines without tarmac because traction isn’t its strongest suit. Under the hood of the diesel variant w test drove is a 1.3L mill that churns out 90bhp. It isn’t as peppy off the mark but it shines once you hit the 2100rpm to 3200rpm range. This makes the Avventura more suitable for highway AUTOLIFE August 2015 63

Handling is also on par in its segment and it drives well in corners, highways and cities. The suspensions have been well tuned which greatly helps with the ride quality of the Avventura
stretches rather than stop-and-go traffic. Power delivery is smooth and linear which makes overtaking a fun ordeal; for best results you’re better off revving it to extract power. There is no diesel rattle in low revs and engine noise is minimum. Handling is also on par in its segment and it drives well in corners, highways and cities. The suspensions have been well tuned which greatly helps with the ride quality of the Avventura. Gear shifts are smooth but on the shorter side between the 1st and 2nd gear with a huge gap in between. Carrying forward the stability of the Punto, the Avventura proves to be a good cruiser. The brakes along with the wide tyres & ABS, ensures that you are always in control of the vehicle under heavy braking situations.
Verdict
Fiat have been one of the few manufacturers who have been able to confidently say that their crossovers aren’t just dressed up hatchbacks in heels. The increased ground clearance is a major plus for the Avventura and the fact that it handles mild offroads well makes it one of the more adventurous offerings in the segment. And provided you keep the motor spinning in the right rpms, it is a gem to drive in the highways. We’d definitely put highway driving ahead of city driving with this one. The designs are sporty and demand attention. Even if the spare tyre cover can be cumbersome to operate at times, it gives the Avventura a fresh adventurous feel. In the segment, it definitely falls in the forefront of competition. A major factor here is the pricing which Fiat seem to have gotten very right. Although not brimming with creature comforts, the Fiat Avventura is close to becoming a compact SUV and not just a crossover. The fact that it doesn’t sear a hole in your wallet as big as others in the segment really makes the Avventura worth your interest.

The name Robbie Maddison has become synonymous with anything that downs the laws of physics, which obviously includes him and his motorcycle. His recent endeavour “Pipe Dream”, presented and produced by DC Shoes in association with Robbie Maddison Entertainment, which showcased his aqua exploits in Tahiti on a motorcycle, took everything to a whole new level. The 34-year old Australian rode his KTM 250SX across the world famous waves at Teahupo’o and Paparā with the help of ski-like devices around the wheels. Maddo devised these ski-like devices to wrap around the wheels to allow the bike to plane through the water. The front ski was shaped like a snowboard and the back ski like a surfboard. Filming took three weeks on two different surf breaks in late April and early May. The stunt bike extraordinaire comes in several flavours (motocross, freestyle, stunt, daredevil), and none disappoint. Maddo was born in Caringbah, New South Wales, Australia in 1981, and by high school he was already into learning Freestyle tricks (FMX). The youngster found his calling in motocross, winning both his first amateur and pro event. Just as in his teenage years, it didn’t take Robbie long to make his mark, by competing in national motocross and super cross events. He has a raft of world records under his belt. On 29th March 2008, he broke his own world record twice during the Crusty Demons Night of World Records show in Melbourne, Australia. On his second attempt he broke his first world record by travelling 104.42 meters (342

feet 7 inches) but this time he landed hard on his back tyre and was not satisfied by the jump, so he decided to jump once more. On his third jump he again broke the world record, this time with 106.98 meters (350.98 feet) into a perfect landing. Robbie is also one of the most feared FMX competitors in the world. On 30 May 2009, Maddison proved himself more than just a stuntman by defeating the world’s best freestyle riders and X games veterans at the Canada stop of the Red Bull X-Fighters competition. Since then he has wowed the world with extraordinaire stunts. His moto-x jump over the Corinth Canal in Greece made him the first FMX rider who accomplished to cross over the canal on his motorbike. Similarly, he jumped

close to 400 feet over a boat inlet on San Diego Bay alongside snowmobiler Levi LaVallee, and jumped 351 feet over the Melbourne F1 Track. His most famous feat was jumping onto the Arc de Triomphe replica on the Las Vegas strip on a live broadcast on New Year’s Eve 2008, and then jumping back down. He has also received an award for best stunt ensemble for James Bond actor Daniel Craig in the movie Sky fall and has won the Taurus world stunt award for “best stunt with a vehicle.” His mantra is “Face your fears - live your dreams” and it seems that his nickname ‘Maddo’ means there this is nothing this man will not try and ride on his bike. The name Robbie Maddison is set to become one for the daredevil history books!

THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES BAJAJ PULSAR RS200
WORDS & PHOTOS: AUTOLIFE TEAM

AUTOLIFE August 2015

Let’s take a trip down memory lane to a time when one name redefined motorcycling for the masses. More than a decade back when the Pulsar series were launched, the bikes took the Indian twowheelers market by storm. The Pulsar twins were a big hit, catapulting the sales of the company while defining and transforming the sports motorcycle market of both India and Nepal. Clean, extremely fast and purposeful– the Pulsars were popular in the very truest sense of the word. While the rivals glued their product towards ugly names and fancy cosmetic upgrades, Bajaj constantly innovated to ensure that the Pulsars stayed ahead-on performance, technology, styling and class-leading features. Bajaj was among the first to bridge the gap between the hugely popular 150 cc and more desired quarter-litre segment. A plethora of products joined the ranks – Pulsar 180, Pulsar 200, Avenger 200 and the Pulsar 220 that the youths loved to own. These bikes set the benchmark for motorcycles manufacturers in India from the day they rolled off the production line. Now, back in the limelight is Bajaj’s latest super sport offering - the Pulsar RS200 where the acronym ‘RS’ stands for ‘Race Sport’. The RS200 is the company’s first fully-faired offering and a far cry from other Indian bikes the customers were expecting. So, how does it measure up? We find out…
BAJAJ CONSTANTLY INNOVATED TO ENSURE THAT THE PULSARS STAYED AHEAD-ON PERFORMANCE, TECHNOLOGY, STYLING AND CLASS-LEADING FEATURES

STYLING:
Bajaj has done it again and made the RS200 a certified head turner. Having fashioned this new model around Bajaj’s SS400 concept model showcased at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo, it should come as no surprise that the RS200 styling is impressive. This particular RS200 might as well make a cameo in the next ‘Transformers’ movie as Bumblebee’s alter ego. Bajaj has dramatically styled their fresh offering with intricate attention to details. The twin LED headlights with projector headlamps, floating split LED rear tail lamps and a stubby can-exhaust along with the typical 10-spoke alloy wheels add to the RS’ sporty appeal.
72
AUTOLIFE August 2015
Even if the styling looks chunk and overdone at some fronts, Bajaj has actually put some effort into this one and the result isn’t bad at all. The company has done a tidy job by going the extra mile and making the bike look very sporty. Overall quality and fit-finish are all satisfactory; the Bajaj bike feels well built.
PERFORMANCE:
You could accuse the RS of being a bit generic with the engine. The engine construction remains the same with the P ulsar 200NS. But that’s not the full story. The RS gets fuel-injection which makes the bike capable of producing a bit more power and torque. Under the fairing sits a 199.5cc, four-stroke,
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
ITS ENGINE IS SMOOTH, ENJOYABLE AND EXHIBITS DEFTNESS IN ALL THE QUARTERS. THE BIKE IS TORQUEY, WELLMANNERED AND HAS ENOUGH EDGE TO CRUISE PAST THE CITY TRAFFIC
single-cylinder and liquid-cooled engine that now makes slightly more power, 24.2bhp at 9750rpm, and 18.6 Nm of torque at 8000rpm. At 165 kgs, the RS200 is agile, dynamic and perhaps even better balanced. Its engine is smooth, enjoyable and exhibits deftness in all quarters. The bike is torquey, well-mannered and has enough edge to cruise past the city traffic and open roads. A dynamic, flexible motorcycle that copes well with our tattered roads, and for a motorcycle with such sporty nature, that’s a big step forward. The petal type single rotor 300mm disc up front and 230mm disc at the rear, coupled with grippy MRF Zapper tires lend the RS200 good braking power. This is also the first Bajaj motorcycle to offer the added safety of ABS brakes, although this is via single channel, working well but only for the front wheel.
ERGONOMICS:
The RS200 has a pleasant sports character, but with a slightly upright riding position dictated by its slightly raised clip-on handlebar. Bajaj also provides handlebarend weights to reduce vibrations as much as possible. There is a well-padded, roomy split saddle, which is comfortable enough for a bike as sporty as this one. The chassis is massively competent, as the bike is enclosed in a perimeter frame which should put a smile on your face while conquering the road. It delivers this
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE August 2015 73
without punishing the pillion. The mirrors provide an excellent rear view when astride. The bike gets a pair of 37mm hydraulic, telescopic fork upfront and an eight-step adjustable, gas-filled monoshock absorber at the rear.
VERDICT:
Does the RS 200 live up to the tag of being the fastest of all Pulsars to date? Yes, the Bajaj Pulsar RS200 is the company’s fastest bike ever. Quicker than a 200NS, quicker than a Pulsar 220. Hushed, fast and surprisingly comfortable, the Pulsar RS200 is everything the acronym ‘RS’ or ‘Race Sport’ stands for. It is evident that Bajaj have put a lot of effort into this one and the result isn’t bad at all. The Bajaj Pulsar RS200 is more cohesive than all of the Pulsars that we have had the pleasure of becoming familiar with. Riders, both new and experienced, will enjoy the refinement, the comfortable saddle and soothing ride. The RS200 is by far the most refined Pulsar we’ve ever ridden….
THE BAJAJ PULSAR RS200 IS MORE COHESIVE THAN ALL OF THE PULSARS THAT WE HAVE GONE BEFORE IT

“WE BELIEVE WE HAVE A WINNER IN THE BOLT” PRABIN KHATIWADA, Head of Department Passenger Vehicle Business Unit Sipradi Trading Pvt. Ltd
76
AUTOLIFE August 2015
A
As Tata Motors rolls out its second offering from its ambitious HORIZONEXT strategy, the company looks well-poised to regain lost market share in the cutthroat hatchback segment. Prabin Khatiwada, Head of Department– Passenger Vehicle Business Unit of Sipradi Trading Pvt. Ltd (Tata Motors Nepal), spoke to AutoLife about Tata’s newest hatch in the Nepalese hatchback marketthe Bolt, and the company’s expectations from it. Excerpts from the interview:
PHOTO: JENISH RAJBHANDARI
Has Tata Motors re-invented itself in the Nepalese market with the Zest? The Zest provided us enough push to regain momentum in the Nepalese market. Even though we had good products, our sales were low because our products lacked refined edge. Of course, we faced challenges in terms of demand and down in the market forces that impact sentiment. But having said that, the Zest and Bolt are completely new products and any new product(s) brings some sort of growth. The company is now facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
redefining the passenger car market with new design aesthetics, segmentdefining drive experience and high-tech infotainment system. The Zest has been accepted very well in the Nepalese market and we hope the same with the Bolt.
Can the Bolt continue the momentum set in motion by the Zest? Every ingredient of the Bolt, like the Zest, has been crafted to offer ultramodern technology and facilities like none other in its segment. The car was designed by experts based in Coventry in Britain, Turin in Italy and Pune in India. The Bolt is Nepal’s first multidrive hatchback with three modes; City, Eco and Sport. No other car in this segment has these options. The interiors are also on a par with luxury cars and the next generation HARMAN infotainment system provides customers a rich connected driving experience. We hope the Bolt will earn Tata Motors a pivotal position in the hatchback segment and build on the success of the Zest.
Nepalese consumers’ willingness to buy our cars. The Zest and Bolt have given good response and traction which a car can expect in the price range in which it operates. We hope the Bolt will attract an entirely new set of customers who are individuals, family members, young families and working professionals.
Finally, how is the company strategizing the sales of Bolt? In spite of the recent earthquake, the Nepalese automobile market has bounced back at a tremendous rate. Now, after a sluggish couple of years, we are working hard to get a stronger foothold in the market. We are implementing some customerfocused marketing strategies to address the needs and meet the demands of the customers. We are confident that Nepalese customers will like the Bolt and buy it.
So, the Bolt really turns on the buzz… We believe we have a winner in the Bolt. What really puts the Bolt a step ahead of competition is its Revotron 1.2- litre turbo-charged petrol engine. This kind of advanced technology is usually seen only in high-end cars. With Zest and Bolt, Tata Motors have achieved the remarkable feat of bringing this technology into affordable family cars.
“What really puts the Bolt a step ahead of competition is its Revotron 1.2- litre turbocharged petrol engine”
Like the Zest, the Bolt is also an outcome of the HORIZONEXT strategy. There are three key pillars in the product development launched under the HORIZONEXT strategy: DriveNext – a car which should be exciting to drive and world-class; DesigNext -they should be attractive to look at; and the third is ConnectNext — they should have a great infotainment system. These three parameters sum up the Bolt.
Every ingredient of the Bolt like the Zest has been crafted to offer ultra-modern technology and facilities like none other in its segment. The car was designed by experts based in Coventry in Britain, Turin in Italy and Pune in India
How has the customer response been and what kind of buyers do you attract now? The response has been encouraging so far. For the first time, our petrol cars are garnering greater inquiries than their diesel sibling. This alone highlights the

AUTOLIFE INTERVIEW
ONE ON ONE WITH STEFANO PELLE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF PIAGGIO VEHICLES PVT LTD
“WE ARE BRINGING A NEW CULTURE OF PREMIUM MARKET”, SAYS STEFANO
M
Manufactured by Italian company Piaggio, Vespa scooters are truly iconic with its unmistakable style and Italian charm. Vespa has a separate identity with a combination of tradition, modernity and Italian flair. On the sidelines of the launch of Vespa brand in Nepal, we met Mr. Stefano Pelle (CE0- Piaggio Vehicles Private Limited) who was here to launch Vespa’s two models, the Vespa VX and Vespa S. In a chat with AutoLife Nepal, Pelle talked about Vespa’s official venture into Nepal and his expectations from the booming Nepalese scooter market. But, before we get into the specifics about Vespa, let us share something about Mr. Stefano Pelle. In a career spanning over 27 years, Mr Pelle has worked from toiletries and aviation industry to confectionery and automobile companies. A graduate of Economics and Political Sciences, Mr Pelle started his professional path with Johnson & Johnson. His professional career is characterized by a deep knowledge and understanding of the business dynamics of the Asian markets, in particular the Indian one, where he held top management positions. After an extensive experience in Marketing Department for international companies, he joined Perfetti Van Melle Group where he ran operations in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan for 10 years with full responsibility for the business and industrial investments. Before leaving Perfetti Van Melle Group he was responsible, as President, of a wide area including South Asia, Middle East and Africa. Starting from October 2014, he has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Piaggio Vehicles Private Limited. Excerpts from the interview:

How do you plan to build the Vespa brand in Nepal? The Nepalese scooter market is not that big in terms of market penetration. It’s approximately half in comparison to the Indian scooters market. But, Piaggio Group is very focused on this part of Asia in its globalisation strategies. Right now there is no premium segment in the Nepalese scooter market but we believe there is a significant number of brand conscious young people in Nepal who would like to make a statement. We are certain that Vespa will allure the Nepalese youth with its style and charm. How differently is the company approaching the sales of Vespa in Nepal? There is a great amount of enthusiasm towards the iconic Vespa brand in Nepal. We will focus on building our brand image through different promotion and communication strategies, and brand building activities in digital community with D-Lifestyles. Similarly, we will also organize special events focusing on the Vespa’s heritage and unique values. In D-lifestyles, we have got a very good partner that we believe can help us to achieve this. What are your expectations from the Nepalese scooters market? Our foray into the Nepalese scooters market activates a whole new segment of style and fashion-conscious Nepalese consumers who are looking for a premium lifestyle offering reflecting their personalities and attitudes. We would like to leverage this untapped market segment that shows tremendous potential for growth in the coming years. Our strategy is centered on developing a new segment of premium scooters, rather than competing in the mainstream arena. Can the Vespa be the game changer for the scooters segment in Nepal? I think it could because we are bringing a new culture of premium market. With our entry into the Nepalese market, the Vespa becomes a truly global vehicle, targeting a new class of young, fashionable Nepalese consumers. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
Vespa is not just a scooter, but a brand with a unique history of individualism and freedom. Will we be seeing newer models of the Vespa in the future? It has always been our endeavour to provide the best quality in products and services, and Nepal will be no exception. First, we will pay special attention to Nepal’s market specific needs and requirements. Only then will we be able to deliver our state-of-the-art products. As of now, we feel that the demand for these two models (Vespa VX and Vespa S) will keep us busy enough initially. But, we will bring a new model within a year. Like the Vespa scooters, do you plan to bring Aprilia, Moto Guzzi bikes too? Yes, Of Course! We have just started our journey in Nepal. We are committed to bring all the global brands that we have that will suit the market here.

DMITRY KHITROV RIDES HIS 2010 HARLEY DAVIDSON ROAD GLIDE INTO NEPAL IN HIS SOLO ROADTRIP FROM RUSSIA TO AUSTRALIA
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
W
We settle ourselves into the saddle, place our feet forward, roll the throttle and the scenic road stretches before us taking our breath away. And we are privileged, because we aren’t just seeing it, we’re feeling that pleasantest sensation which magnifies all our emotions. The feeling goes on, deep and permanent, transforming our world from one of monotony and drabness to one of excitement and adventure. Nothing defines this sheer pleasure of riding and there is no better way to experience it than from the saddle of a Harley-Davidson.
Too Expensive, Too Big? Well, that maybe the case for most of us but for some nothing gets better than relishing the earth below and the vast sky above from the saddle of their Harley. One such individual is Dmitry Khitrov who has set out on a truly epic solo road trip from Russia to Australia. Accompanying him on this road trip is a 2010 Harley Davidson Road Glide. For someone who has embarked on many such expeditions around the world, Dimitry was just as enthusiastic when we caught up with him in Kathmandu. Excerpts from the interview: What went into the preparations for your journey? There were many facets to the preparation. There was a lot of paperwork to arrange at the start. I had to figure out if I could get all the visas for the countries I wanted to travel through and more importantly, the major work was to acquire a special custom document called Carnet de Passage. A Carnet de Passage is a document that allows you to cross international borders with a vehicle and avoid paying customs charges. After that I prepared my bike and carried some essential spare parts with me (bearings, brake pads, drive belt, cables and clutch). I ride a lot. I enjoy the freedom when out on the road and the good company with like-minded people when I visit their cities. I’ve done all sorts of long distance rides on my motorcycle, and this would be another addition to my experiences. My business can stay without me for a while as I worked hard enough to make this road-trip possible. I’m also writing for a few magazines and in this way I’m working while riding too.

AUTOLIFE August 2015 81
Any mishaps with the bike along the way? How did you deal with it? There are a lot of places a fully loaded Harley Davidson shouldn’t be going but I have no problem taking it. My bike is a 2010 HarleyDavidson Road Glide. It’s probably rare and uncommon to tour Asia on a Harley Davidson. Even though she is relatively difficult to maintain on trips like this, she is built tough. The only breakdown I’ve suffered till now was in Kazakhstan when the bike’s starter broke down. But, luckily my friend sent me the spare part. What is your favourite travel destination? Why? What are you carrying with you on the trip? What are the essentials and indulgences (if any)? Since photography is my passion, I carry a lot of photo equipment and a laptop. I have a couple of t-shirts and briefs because when you’re on a long journey, you need much fewer clothes. Some other essentials are camping equipment, trekking shoes, raincoat, a GPS navigator and a good knife. As an indulgence, I carry a bottle of good whisky just in case I find good company to share it with. Besides that, I carry a lot of tools and spare parts too because its’ not funny to push a 450kg beast if in case it breaks down. Whatelse..Ah!! I also have three different credit cards. What have been the highlights of this trip so far? The highlights of this trip so far has been riding through central Asia into Pakistan and Ladakh(India). This route features some stunning sand and natural rock formations and flanked by mountains on both sides, the plains offer a spectacular driving experience. The landscape is trippy with the high altitudes and feels so far removed from the rest of the world. The KaraKoram Highway which connects China and Pakistan is undoubtedly one of the world’s most stunning routes. Nepal is a great destination too. I couldn’t go to Muktinath and Jomsom this time because of the bad weather. But, I will come back pretty soon. This is definitely not my last trip here. 82

The USA and Canada are great motorcycling countries - long distances, many things to explore, different types of nature and very friendly people. Europe is also beautiful. We live in a beautiful world with diverse culture and I’m so lucky to explore it!
NEPAL IS A GREAT DESTINATION TOO. I COULDN’T GO TO MUKTINATH AND JOMSOM THIS TIME BECAUSE OF THE BAD WEATHER. BUT, I WILL COME BACK PRETTY SOON. THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT MY LAST TRIP HERE.

What tips do you have for first time Solo Travelers? Main tip is to try! Don’t be afraid to face problems on the road. This is how you will meet new friends and some good Samaritans around. In your endless search for adventure, you will cross paths with some truly amazing individuals. The weather could change in an instant, danger could be right around the corner but you make it through without even realizing it. But, even the most difficult of things could be great fun because with every outing into the wild, you acquire new skills and you perfect the skills you already have. Only solo travelers can get closer to the culture and tradition of the places they get to. Be ready to accept random invitations for meals or stays in people’s homes and cherish them for that’s what makes the journey rich. Similarly, don’t forget to wear protective gears because a relatively small mistake can cause you serious injury which might just cut your trip short. And at last, what’s parked in your garage back home? Besides this, I’ve got another Harley Davidson - A Heritage Springer. I also own a Buell and a Honda 50cc Monkey bike.
