Wanderlust; you hear and see it on the regular nowadays. Scrawled across Instagram posts and all over social media. It is a very powerful word. It attempts to describe the thirst for adventure, the unquenchable desire to travel to every corner of the world. Wanderlust is a very common sentiment in most people, but because of our hectic schedules and responsibilities it remains nestled in the back of our minds where it squanders away until it’s too late. We’ve had this insuppressible emotion for a very long time. One journey on our bucket list was driving to Lo Manthang , and luckily we had the opportunity to strike this one off. Check out our coverage of the Ford Upper Mustang Adventure organized by Yeti Travels Pvt Ltd in this issue. However, the hero of this issue is the new Honda Civic. FALL IN AUTO LENDING WILL HIT GOVERNMENT REVENUE Nepalese Automobile Sector

The Nepalese Automotive sector is amongst the top sectors making the largest contribution to the country’s economy. However, the recent regulations imposed by the government have hit this sector hard. In spite of a contribution of almost NRs 100 Billion to the economy in the running fiscal year, the government yet views this sector as ‘unproductive’ and has reduced the loan cap provided by banks and financial institutions to make a higher purchase. However, the dealers claim automotive industry is the real driver of the economic growth of the country. Hence, we sat down with the professionals from the Nepalese Auto Industry to discuss if halting loan disbursements and categorizing the auto industry as an ‘unproductive’ sector is the right move. Excerpts

Bibek Bdr. Balami

Incharge- Sales and Marketing United Traders Syndicate Pvt. Ltd (Toyota)

AL: The current liquidity crisis has discouraged prospective customers from making a hire purchase. How are you handling this? Definitely the liquidity crunch has baffled and stirred the automobile industry to its core. We faced similar situation with the earthquake and unofficial blockade but we bounced back. However, the current liquidity crunch seems to be the most severe one amongst all those incidents. The financial crunch has definitely discouraged the potential clients. As the automobile sector major sales is directly dependent on the auto loan facility both goes hand in hand. We are handling this issue with a) In-depth research on what problem the customers are facing b) Providing our clients a comfortable buying solution c)

22

AUTOLIFE APRIL 2017

Personal visits to each clients and providing an overall all round solution d) Tying up with reputed banks to ease the auto loan hassle with a personal touch from the sale force AL: Instead of helping the industry, the government has termed the auto sector as ‘an unproductive sector’. We are all aware that the auto-industry is being under estimated. How do you see that? We are bewildered by the term ‘unproductive sector’. Before branding the automobile sector as ‘’unproductive’’, the government should look into these facts: • Automobile industry is the major top contributor to the government revenue. In the last fiscal year, the total automobile industry contributed around NRS 80 billion • In terms of employment, the automobile industry currently facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

employees an approximate 17 lakh workforce throughout Nepal. This in turn reflects the engagement of automobile market in building the human capital asset of Nepal. The automobile industry is not a selfsustaining industry; it works closely together with banks and financial institutions. So, once an impact hits the automobile industry, the productiveness of all these industries will suffer a similar fate. AL: What scares you about the market right now? How tough will 2074 B.S. be for the auto industry? What scares us the most is the

continuation of the financial crunch and the continuation of the discouragement to prospective customers. We believe the industry is growing at a rapid phase. In spite of all the difficulties faced, the Auto Industry has created jobs, fulfilled peoples dream of buying their first vehicles, worked together in the development process by contributing to the taxation structure of Nepal government. We think 2074 B.S. will be completely opposite to 2073 B.S. for auto industry. The beginning has already become a great hurdle so far. The increasing difficulty on auto loans, the uncertainty of the reduction of financial crunch will

definitely affect the smooth operation of this industry. AL: Finally, how do you plan to keep your sales humming during this time? We plan to move forward during the current and uncertain future time by: providing best overall customer experience, tie-up with financial institutions to ease the trouble of auto loan to client and adaptive sales pitch to clients on case to case basis. We will move forward with the will and strategy to make through the present condition while providing the best Toyota experience.

AL: The current liquidity crisis has discouraged prospective customers from making a hire purchase. How are you handling this? The current economic crisis has definitely discouraged the prospective customers from making a hire purchase. And the sales figures have also gone down rigorously. So, in order to tackle this, we have been focusing on the sales of cars in government sector, tender sales and duty free cars. Also, we have been doing regular activation programs at bank by providing them good corporate discounts and maximum exchange facility through exchange bonus. Nepal Rastra Bank has already allowed banks to lend 50% loan on hire purchase, however, due to the ongoing economic crisis, the banks have not been able to provide loan easily to customers. Therefore, we are facilitating our customers with easy auto loan financing facilities from some banks by using our business relationship. This is how we have been attracting new customers and converting them into sales.

AL: Instead of helping the industry, the government has termed the auto sector as ‘an unproductive sector’. We are all aware that the auto-industry is being under estimated. How do you see that? The automobile industry is the real driver of economic growth of the country. The contribution of transportation sector to the annual revenue of the government is more than 25 % and the sector has already contributed almost NRS 80-90 billion to the government coffers in the running fiscal year. Also, this industry is a major

AUTOLIFE APRIL 2017 23

employment contributor of the economy. Automobile and transportation sector is the base for development of other sectors as it is directly related to mobility of people and goods. Halting loan disbursement will not only make this fiscal’s economic growth target of 6.5 % unachievable but also adversely affect the overall economy. We keep on hearing about government initiatives to make the transportation service efficient. However, nothing much has been done yet. The amount is utilized in other sectors but the development of infrastructure is poor. The road network in city areas has increased by just 10-15 % in the past two decades. Therefore, instead of terming the top revenue contributor as ‘unproductive’ sector, the government must be able to utilize the revenue fully in a systematic manner. AL: What scares you about the market right now? How tough will 2074 B.S. be for the auto industry? If this ongoing trend to lend only 50% of the total value will continue, then there’s a less possibility to see growth in the automobile sector. Also, the interest on higher purchase is higher than ever, so people are far more interested in depositing money in fixed deposit. If this continues on a longer run, we are afraid that the sales figure will go down to the lowest. If the government doesn’t change this policy in the upcoming days, the automobile sector will continue to suffer. It will be very difficult to achieve the sales target and also regain the sales figure which was present before the government decision to halt auto loan. Even the government will bear a huge loss in terms of revenue generation affecting the entire economy of Nepal. AL: Finally, how do you plan to keep your sales humming during this time? We will continue our activation programs at banks, cement factories, housings & other targeted areas with attractive discount offers with loyalty bonus. We will also continue to help our customers through easy financing schemes. Since, our new facelifted Korando has arrived, we will launch the SUV soon with attractive schemes. With the increment in the market size, competition has surged too compelling us to offer more facilities and services to our customers.

AUTOLIFE APRIL 2017

Karan Chaudhary Executive Director Chaudhary Group

AL: The current liquidity crisis has discouraged prospective customers from making a hire purchase. How are you handling this? We have had a fantastic start to the year which was promising to the automobile industry as a whole. Yes, the recent development in terms of liquidity crisis and harsh parameters on auto loan has had a denting impact on the industry. To ensure that customers can easily purchase their favorite Suzuki Cars, we have come up with a hassle free financing facility. We are also providing New Year scheme in form of free insurance and cash discounts. We are also continuously working with our local dealership in providing personalize solution to our customers. AL: Instead of helping the industry, the government has termed the auto sector as ‘an unproductive sector’. We are all aware that the autoindustry is being under estimated. How do you see that? Firstly, the term ‘unproductive Sector’ for auto industry is highly ‘debatable’. The automobile industry (both private and commercial) is the backbone for economic development of this country. Try halting automobile movement for a day across the whole country and the point will be validated. Other fact is that the automobile contributes large

volume of much needed tax income to the government. There are many more arguments to the term ‘an unproductive sector’. AL: What scares you about the market right now? How tough will 2074 B.S. be for the auto industry? The volatile situation right now raises few eyebrows in terms of liquidity and government stance on the same. However, we are optimistic that the situation will be resolved soon. Till now, I don’t see any negativity going on to 2074 B.S. as this current crisis is going to bring out the best from us and our competitors while tackling the situation. This in turn will be good for the industry as a whole. AL: Finally, how do you plan to keep your sales humming during this time? As I mentioned earlier, we will be working closely with our local dealerships to provide the best possible solution. We will participate using various mediums to promote our brand and make our presence felt in the industry. Apart from this, we do have some exciting new product launches this year, in particularly the Suzuki Ignis. We will further strengthen our after sales service commitment this year making the ownership of Suzuki Brand a wonderful experience to our valued customers.

Arjun Karki

AGM - Sales & Marketing Sipradi Trading Private Limited (Tata Motors)

AL: The current liquidity crisis has discouraged prospective customers from making a hire purchase. How are you handling this? There is an overall slump in the industry itself as we are in a very tricky situation. As per our data, only about 40% of the total potential customers will make the final purchase. The tough task is to identify those 40% and target all the communications towards them. Since we have a small market, we have intensified the prospecting activities throughout Nepal where we ensure that anyone willing to purchase a car is at least exposed to our sales team. Apart from that, we have customized promotional schemes which are communicated to the prospects in person. AL: Instead of helping the industry, the government has termed the auto sector as ‘an unproductive sector’. We are all aware that the auto-industry is being under estimated. How do you see that? We are in no position to question the government. However, the decline in automobiles sales will ultimately hit the revenue source of the government. We hope that the

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

financial cap on automobiles is only for a limited time period. AL: What scares you about the market right now? How tough will 2074 B.S. be for the auto industry? Behavioral change is very difficult especially in a growing economy like ours. What scares us the most is that the current decline in sales may not see immediate growth even if the financial cap is uplifted. The trust in the government policy is minimal and this will only further extend the regression in the automobile industry. 2074 B.S. is tough already. We are really hoping to hear something positive in the upcoming Budget announcement from the government. AL: Finally, how do you plan to keep your sales humming during this time? Reaching out to the prospects is the only way. As the good old saying goes “the show must go on”, we are very motivated to take on all the challenges. In recent years, we did overcome the earthquake and economic blockade. Hence, we will definitely move on accepting what the government has imposed upon the industry.

AUTOLIFE APRIL 2017 25

it is completely false because the auto industry provides mobility, it is not just for travelling, it is also for getting a lot of work done. Without a vehicle, the working system of any enterprise would take a lot more time energy and money. It is not only sales, it is aftersales, and the spare parts business which will all be hampered in a lot of ways. Also, talking about the revenue contribution, almost 40% of revenue is generated from the automobile sector. We think the government is unclear about the prospects of the industry.

Rupesh Sharma Bhatta DGM-Sales & Marketing Laxmi Intercontinental Pvt. Ltd (Hyundai Nepal)

AL: The current liquidity crisis has discouraged prospective customers from making a hire purchase. How are you handling this? It is said that the second biggest investment a person makes is buying a car, first being a house of course. Talking about the current situation, the banking system now allows only 50% financing. Looking at the past trend, almost 90% of the customers purchased vehicle through financing. But after the implementation of this rule and given the fluctuation interest rates in the banking world, customers have gone into a ‘wait and see’ mode rather than making a decision. However for us, we have to sustain the business and keep going on, so we have come up

26

AUTOLIFE APRIL 2017

with schemes that will favor the customers in this situation. The scheme is to pay the interest for a year through the company on customer’s behalf. We are trying to advocate against the rule or make it more feasible through NADA to the ministry and Nepal Rasta Bank. Most of our target group buys vehicles as a need and not a luxury and we think the government must understand that fact and make rules accordingly. AL: Instead of helping the industry, the government has termed the auto sector as ‘an unproductive sector’. We are all aware that the auto-industry is being under estimated. How do you see that? When the government says ‘unproductive’, in our opinion,

One reason why the government thinks that way can be because of the increasing population of the vehicles on the road but there are a lot of other ways this can be sorted out. We all see the condition of the public vehicles and how hectic it is for people to travel by it, so it is a necessity that people have a motorcycle at least. Nepal is a small country, and if the public transportation was managed properly we would not have this problem in the first place, so rather than labeling the auto industry as unproductive, the government should plan more efficiently on that aspect while consulting the automobile industry as well. We would say it was a hasty decision that needed more consultation. AL: What scares you about the market right now? How tough will 2074 B.S. be for the auto industry? Talking about the fears of the industry we

think, all the rules of the 50% financing and dubbing the auto sector ‘unproductive’ came all of a sudden and we didn’t have a lot of time to assess the situation. The uncertainty of what the government is going to do next regarding our industry is what scares us the most. But looking at this year, we are hopeful that this situation will get better in the upcoming months and there will be a little stability. For now whatever we try to do from our side, the customers are reluctant because they also fear the uncertainty. AL: Finally, how do you plan to keep your sales humming during this time? Like we said before we are coming up with amazing schemes, our latest one was “Naya barsa hyundai ko saath ma” where it has improved the situation. The customers are still confused, they are not sure if the interest rates will stay stable or fluctuate again. Probably they have a plan on their personal budgeting and if that doesn’t match up it will be very hard for them. Fiat Punto Evo, launched back in 2014 satisfied us with its aesthetics and adaptability to our roads while not compromising on the ride quality; it brought a much needed evolution to the Fiat Punto. Now, we have the Fiat Punto Abarth, while it borrows most of its design language from the Evo, we are curious about the scorpion badge on the bonnet that says “Abarth”. Abarth is a racing car and road car maker founded by Italo-Austrian Carlo Abarth in 1949, and has been working under Fiat since 1971 as their racing department. To put it simply, Abarth knows how to make fast cars. How has the scorpion tricked out this Punto?? Let’s take a look.

F

EXTERIOR

Looking at the Punto Abarth there are clear signs of designs carried over from the Punto Evo, but then there are additions to it much needed by a hot hatch. In the Abarth trim, it’s even more evocative with lots of chrome bits on the grille, fog and rear light housing, door handles and exhaust tip. Spend a few minutes with the Abarth Punto and you’ll find it has more scorpions than sub-Saharan Africa. The front and rear decals, the aluminum pedals, the alloys, steering wheel are all stamped with the brand’s logo and even a massive scorpion sticker on the roof! Over to the side you’ll find a racing decal that says “Abarth” and gives you a subtle reminder that this car is fast. However, the most eye catching part of

ABARTH IS A RACING CAR AND ROAD CAR MAKER FOUNDED BY ITALO-AUSTRIAN CARLO ABARTH IN 1949, AND HAS BEEN WORKING UNDER FIAT SINCE 1971 AS THEIR RACING DEPARTMENT.

“ UNDER THE HOOD IS WHAT THE ABARTH HAS TRIED TO MAKE ITS PRESENCE FELT THE MOST

this hatch is that aggressive 16 inch 5 spoke alloy wheels with the spokes that look like a scorpion’s stinger and the Abarth badge on all wheels.

INTERIOR

On the inside, the sportier theme continues with an-all black color theme for dashboard and seat fabrics. Plus, the seats and the instrument cluster get a yellow and red color finish (colors from the Abarth logo), adding some flair to the otherwise largely unchanged design. The all black dashboard has very good finish and the stylish ambient lighting on the instrument along with fabric inserts on door trims and door inserts completed the premium feel. We have all black soft touch front panels, ambient lighting on the dashboard, fabric inserts on door trim and door arm rest, a rear parcel shelf and a boot lamp. On top of this it also comes with a host of convenience provided

30

AUTOLIFE APRIL 2017

by foldable key, electrically adjustable rear view mirrors, 60:40 split rear seats, sporty seat and upholstery. There’s Bluetooth, navigation, steering mounted controls all of which are interacted through via a 5 inch display. Safety and security has also been given priority with the availability of airbags with crash sensors, ABS and EBD, automatic door lock, fire prevention system and many more.

PERFORMANCE

Under the hood is what the Abarth has tried to make its presence felt the most, a 5 speed manual gearbox paired with a 1.4L T-Jet engine that churns out 145 brake horse power and with the front wheels scrabbling to put all the power and torque down, the engine propels this scorpion to 100kph from standstill in 9.41sec – making it the first of the mainstream hatchbacks to crack the 10 second barrier. And if the

right pedal is buried to the floor, the Abarth Punto will quickly cross 180kph. With the turbo spinning strongly, there’s no lag in power especially in the short, lower gears. The 6,500rpm rev limit comes up in no time and each upshift puts you smack in the meat of the power band. Because you don’t need to rev the guts out of this engine, the Abarth, riding on a massive wave of torque, feels deceptively quick. The driving position is perfect with appropriate visibility. Maneuvering the car in busy traffic may seem slightly heavy due to its hydraulic steering at first but it gets much lighter once you gain speed. The steering feels well weighted and confident even while cornering at high speeds which help you establish a connection with the car instantly. Combine it to the stiff suspensions and you have one of the most accurately steering cars in its segment. The Abarth’s suspension set-up is stiffer than the standard Punto’s to better cope with the increase in power and this is quite obvious in the way it rides. The reworked spring and damper ratings give it a firm edge over uneven surfaces. The brakes have been worked on too. The Abarth Punto comes with disc brakes on all four wheels, with ABS and EBD as standard. Turning into a tight corner, the grippy tyres take total control and the Punto maintains its set course. Although spring ratings have been tighten a bit, the ride is supple while driving on straights or going over bumps. Though there’s a drop in ground clearance its still facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

high enough (155mm) for the underbelly to not leave its mark on the speed bumps.

VERDICT

When talking cars, ‘performance’ and ‘budget’ are two words that you don’t often mention in the same breath. Especially in our part of the world. There’s always a compromise that you have to make, either in the name of family needs, practicality or fuel-economy. The Fiat Punto Abarth, however, comes the closest to bridging that gap in this particular segment. It can carry your family in relative comfort along with luggage. It is fuel efficient which means you don’t need to own a gas station to pay for those fuel bills. It has 145 horses under the hood and is easy to drive in the city. But when that light turns green, and traffic fades way in the rear-view mirror, you will know that this scorpion means serious business.

MAZDA CX-9 DEBUTS IN NEPAL The CX-9 is Mazda’s flagship SUV, this 3-row, 7-passenger crossover SUV comes with a stylish exterior, premium interior, and a new turbocharged engine that deftly splits the power/efficiency equation. Mazda’s largest and priciest SUV receives a svelte new skin, plush interior, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, and a host of safety and driving aids. The new, amenityladen Signature trim could pass as a luxury SUV at a serious discount.

T

Mazda CX-9 is now available in four trims: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and the new Signature. Even if you spend the least on a base Sport model, you’ll get some nice amenities like 3-zone climate control that includes a 2nd-row control panel, 7-inch color touch-screen display with rotary controller, rearview camera, and 18-inch wheels.

Mazda CX-9 models now use a new 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that replaces the former 3.7-liter V6. This new engine has fewer horsepower than the outgoing one, but greater torque. It also gets Mazda’s SkyActiv powertrain technology, which enables zippy performance and high fuel efficiency. The Mazda CX-9 completes the automaker’s lineup of SkyActiv vehicles and signals another step forward into premium territory with the new Signature model. Like its rivals, the new CX-9 can be had with driving and safety aids like all-wheel drive (AWD), radar cruise control and automatic emergency braking. This new model is powered by a smallbut-stout turbocharged 4-cylinder. Horsepower is down some, but torque is up immensely -- a big help for off-the-line acceleration. Moreover, it’s more fuel efficient.

Owner’s Review This is the new Skoda Rapid, the 2017 model and I have owned it now for 2 and a half months. I have always been a sedan lover. The reputation of Skoda is well-known throughout the industry. I have had a lot of experience with cars but this is the first car that I bought myself so, I would like to say this is my first car. The exterior looks elegant and the interior has a nice comfortable feel. Personally, I like the sound system of the car as I always listen to music when I drive so that is a huge advantage for me. The accuracy of the instrument cluster is amazing as we get real time mileage.

I haven’t taken my sedan on long drives but I recently went to Dhulikhel and it was a nice experience. I am planning on going to Dharan soon and I think it will be comfortable as well. I usually go out with family and up to 4 people fit quite comfortably in the back seat and the leg space is plenty. The Rapid is worth the cost range, and it is very much suited for our roads. The after sales department is very cooperative and they cater to all of my queries. I have just completed my first servicing and I am very satisfied with the service. Also, I was impressed with the way the staffs in the showroom handled their customers. Overall, I would say the new Skoda Rapid is a very comfortable car. I did look at other sedans as well but the New Rapid struck all the chords and I am happy with the decision. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a sedan.

The prospects of a luxurious life might not be a reality for many because not everyone is born with a silver spoon in his or her mouth. For many, life barrages them with a melee of obstacles and difficulties before even providing a glimpse of success. Nevertheless, the ones who keep getting back up after falling and persevere towards their goals do succeed, and once you reach this point in life you have the liberty to reward yourself for your struggles. There are many ways you can go about doing this; but for the petrol heads out there, nothing gets better than writing a check for a new car.

T

Once again, plenty of choices: you’ve got hot hatches for the sensibly smart, burly off roaders for the adventure junkies, decked out SUVs for the spendthrifts, and minivans for the family person. However, for the ones seeking a vehicle that exuberates premium sophistication and class nothing comes closer than a sleek sedan. Often considered a symbol of success, sedans have been popular choices for many auto buyers. To cater to this market need, the auto industry provides a plethora of options. The one that we have at our hands here, is the Honda Civic 2017. The Honda Civic has been put amongst the cream of the crop in the segment, slotting itself between the Accord and City from the same make. Premium feel and features backed with a favored brand has helped the Honda Civic carve out a niche amongst the sedan buyers. While many admired the model, an upgrade seemed the need of the hour. Answering the call, Honda has brought the new Civic, and it’s not just a cosmetic facelift or a half-assed upgrade. The Civic is back and it’s back with a bang.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

HONDA HAS BROUGHT THE NEW CIVIC, AND IT’S NOT JUST A COSMETIC FACELIFT OR A HALF-ASSED UPGRADE. THE CIVIC IS BACK AND IT’S BACK WITH A BANG.

EXTERIOR Although previous updates have not set the bar high for the Civic, this one knocks the ball right out of the court. It looks as good as a car ready to be cast in the next Marvel Superhero movie. The face is aggressively designed gets a bold chrome slate on its grille. There is a clever concoction of sleek lines and angles throughout the entire body of the new Civic that gives it a sleek sophisticated appeal. From its profile, you will notice that it is longer in terms of wheelbase. A sharp upper character line and raked roofline flows into a striking set of C-shaped taillights and gives it a sharp sporty design. The lower character line adds extra oomph into its design. The Civic was always a looker, but the upgrades have certainly helped. And unless Emilia Clarke rolls in on a skateboard anytime soon, the Honda Civic is definitely in the running for Nepal’s sexiest thing on four wheels. AUTOLIFE APRIL 2017 39

INTERIORS Step inside and you will notice that the Civic Sedan has grown up. It features the most comfortable and sophisticated interior of any Civic ever. The cockpit of the car drips of confidence. The instrument cluster that consists of a TFT screen with a half-moon tacho wrapping around a digital speedo and lots of selectable ancillary info gives it the modern racecar feel. The displays are clear and beautifully laid out. On either side are bar-graph fuel and temp gauges. The design-centric instrument panel features a single-level display that’s easy to read so you can spend more time watching the scenery fly by. Everything is in reach of the driver - from the controls to the storage console, which fits drinks, a tablet or a small bag also you don’t have to pull on a brake lever. Civic features a segmentfirst Electric Parking Brake that activates with the lift of a finger. The cabin will seat five people comfortably and you get all the interior space you’ll need to pile in with your friends and turn a Saturday drive into something bigger. The back seat is fine for legroom, if tight for tall heads. With 60/40 split fold-down rear seats and a spacious trunk, Civic offers plenty of cargo options from picking up groceries to setting out for a long weekend also instead of a rigid boot cover that’s a pain to store when you fold the seats, there’s a roller blind that brilliantly goes side to side. Rolled up, it’s little more than the size of a telescoping umbrella. Still some clever touches to admire. Civic

features luxe leather details throughout the cabin, including leather-trimmed seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. However, there are some misses in the trim level we drove with no reversing camera or engine start/stop button. But we are not going to nitpick because rarely have we felt like we were sitting in a cockpit as we did when we were driving this sleek Honda Civic.

PERFORMANCE The Honda Civic is as much of a driver’s car as it is a sophisticated sedan. Sitting lower than in the old Civic, or indeed many rivals, makes you feel connected to the road. And it’s not just an illusion; the Civic traces a precise and quick-witted path to follow your orders. It rolls less than most rivals, and just gets on with the job of steering round the arc you set. There’s a good feel to the steering, and the general chassis confidence makes the drive secure. It copes well with mid-corner bumps too. The Civic is designed to handle with the best of them, featuring standard MacPherson struts and a lightweight, rigid Honda ACE™ body structure. The Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT) offered for Civic is optimized to match the engine, for plenty of power without sacrificing fuel efficiency. There is some lag from a standing start, but once revs build, throttle response is better than with most CVTs. Put the transmission

in S rather than D and the engine is kept spinning about 1000 rpm higher so that the turbo spools up more quickly.

VERDICT The new Honda Civic is an improvement on an already good car. In terms of aesthetics Honda have hit the nail on the head with this one. While at close quarters the angles and cuts may seem like the metal has been bent a little too much on this sedan, it takes a more holistic perspective and a few steps back to see the real beauty of the exterior design. Driving capabilities have not been compromised and it is definitely a driver’s car. Honda might have stagnated for a bit but it is now back with a vengeance.

For centuries, the mystical valleys of Upper Mustang remained isolated from the rest of the world, echoing little more than the hymns of the religious pilgrims; and the lulling chimes of the bells hung around the lumbering fleets of yaks and horses.

F

Constantly castigated by harsh winds and brutal winters, the arid desert mountains rightfully live up to their punishing reputation. Because these lands were closed off to trekkers and most of the modern world till 1992, Mustang fostered its own unique culture and lifestyle, one that today attracts the interest of people all around the world. A path that served as a route for ancient traders and pilgrims, these winding and unforgiving terrains served as our paths into the ancient Kingdom of Lo. One of the perks in our line of work is getting to explore and travel our beautiful country, something we are clearly not doing enough of. Most of us have a tendency to focus on the negatives, and to be fair we have plenty of reasons to gripe about the shortcomings of our country. However, in terms of outright natural beauty Nepal has undoubtedly been blessed. And that gives us all the more reason to unearth ourselves from our mundane lives and travel. Much like reading a book, traveling gives one the time to think, ideate, observe and learn new things, from culture to food to history. It adds to the experience of life giving it a completeness that you just can’t do being confined in an office cabinet. Sharing much of the same principle, Yeti Travels Pvt. Ltd. and Go Ford Nepal organized the Ford Upper Mustang Adventure. An epic endeavor under the

expert organization of the Yeti Travels Pvt. Ltd. crew and the title sponsors Go Ford Nepal (along with Maxxis Tyres, Ironman 4x4, and Bacardi), the Ford Upper Mustang Adventure unraveled into a trip of a lifetime for the participants. A driving haven for any enthusiast, this is the road trip took us into the arid deserts in the mountains and right into the Kingdom of Lo. DAY 1: KATHMANDU TO POKHARA What were bright sunny skies in the day quickly turned to a dreary overcast evening as we entered Pokhara. Nevertheless, the howling winds and heavy rainfalls did little to dampen the spirits of the participants. We were stationed at the Fishtail Lodge Pokhara and the Lakeside Retreat for the night while everyone gathered for a hearty feast at the Fishtail. Vivek B. Basnyat, MD of Yeti Travels Pvt. Ltd. talked us through the basics of what awaited us in our journey, and he is amongst the few people who are apt for the job. It was clear that the terrain we would be faced with would require some technical prowess behind the wheels, so Vivek’s tips and guides would be words to live by for the next 5 days. With the rain still pouring, we headed to our rooms to get a good night’s sleep. We would be embarking on a long arduous journey the next day. DAY 2: POKHARA TO JOMSOM The first leg of our journey would end at Jomsom, also known as Dzong-Sampa or New Fort. Before that we would be getting a taste of the offroad driving that was to come. While it was smooth sailing till Beni, the roads began to crumble soon after. It wasn’t long before our convoy was

48

AUTOLIFE APRIL 2017

kicking up clouds of dust and crawling up rocky ways walled by gargantuan rocks. Lunch would be served at Tatopani where a brief respite would revitalize everyone for the rest of the drive. Once again the day started out clear and we received the first glimpses of the mountains on the backdrop of the crystal blue sky. However, while we finished lunch, dark clouds appeared and a light drizzle spattered over our windshields. Although this wasn’t the weather we had hoped for, it did little to spoil the magnificent drive and vistas. Small pellets of rain cascaded through the grey skies and spit on the windshields, only to be wiped clean with the rhythmic swipes of the wipers. Our convoy sauntered on through the gloomy weather, wading through turquoise blue streams burbling over its rocky river beds. Darkness fell by the time we reached the beautiful city of Jomsom, we would be leaving early the next day and take on the steepest climbs of the trip. Thin air and clearer skies were in the forecast.

AUTOLIFE APRIL 2017 49

DAY 3: JOMSOM TO LO MANTHANG A clear morning lifted our spirits, the crimpled tops of the mountains shone against the blue sky. Lo Manthang awaited our arrival, getting there however would be the most demanding leg of the journey, till that point. A hearty breakfast set the pace for the day, and we left Jomsom with a full stomach. To get to Lo Manthang, we had to drive through steep ascents and passes. For the driving enthusiasts it was a challenging but rewarding experience, however for some passengers it induced several butt clenching moments. Climbing to higher altitudes had the machines struggling with the thin air, and edging through cliff drops had some of us short of breath too. We encountered the first of many river crossings. As advised the drives were to smoothly power through the river currents and fight the urge to gun it across to the other end of the river bank. All participants took on the challenge and did as instructed, however we did encounter our first stalled engine in the rivers. Turns out, one of the Mahindra Thars happened to suck in a plastic bag through the intake which choked the engine shut. Not only did it shed light on the importance of keeping the touring routes litter free it emphasized on the importance of being fully prepared when undertaking such expeditions. Yeti Travels exhibited their expertise and readiness for such mishaps and made a quick recovery, with Vivek himself wading into the icy cold waters and winching out the Thar. The mechanics went to work immediately and revived the Thar while the convoy waited and took in the beauty of the surroundings. Back on track, we drove towards Lo Manthang, reaching altitudes of 3788m (12429ft). One particular pass posed a technical challenge for everyone. Significantly narrower together with the presence of a rocky stream and a sharp rising hairpin turn escalated the technicality of the segment. That demanded proper teamwork from the vehicles and the participants and the cooperative efforts helped

50

AUTOLIFE APRIL 2017

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

everyone pass the bit without any misadventures. The rest of the drive was smooth sailing and a proper treat. Dry dusty roads spotted with chortens typical to the terrain finally led us to the city of Lo Manthang. Celebrations were in order and that is just what followed. Snacks and drinks were served and merriments ensued. The altitude had gotten to a few of us, but there were nurses and equipment (including oxygen supply) that was at the ready if and when required. We had the next day to explore the city, so we enjoyed the night and even managed to celebrate a fellow participant’s birthday. DAY4: LO MANTHANG The Kingdom of Lo is a cultural and visual delight with the amalgamation of the Tibetan lifestyle into the city’s life. Its typical architecture, culture, and lifestyle are one of a kind however it is fast degrading. Roads being built open the city to more travelers and that puts it at risk of rapid modernization. One misfit modern concrete building being constructed in one of the valleys helped put the morose likelihood of a concrete jungle in the future of these untouched lands all the more real. At the moment, the beauty of Lo Manthang is uncontested. We explored the city and drove up to see the mystic Sky Caves at Chhosser. These manmade caves are some of the world’s

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

greatest archeological mysteries. The astonishing number of caves, some dug into the cliffside, others tunnelled from above are thousands of years old but who built them and why remains a mystery. Some of us even ventured further to the Chinese border at Korola Pass once we were done exploring the caves and the Nyphu Gomba monastery. DAY 5: LO MANTHANG TO JOMSOM It was time to bid Lo Manthang adieu and head back to Jomsom. However, we would not be taking the same route we took to get there. Instead we would be taking a shortcut, a treacherously technical and difficult one at that. We would be traversing through the Kaligandaki River bed and, in the process, wade through over a 100 river crossings that reached depths of almost 4 feet. A trail primarily used by lorries, crossing these riverbeds is AUTOLIFE APRIL 2017 51

not something your everyday driver would or should attempt. However, with the required recovery equipment and expertise at our disposal, we took the challenge head on. The plan was to tail one of the lorries that would guide us through the maze of streams slaloming through the towering boulders that dwarfed everything in its path. However, not all things always go according to plan. While we maintained a tight convoy, the lorries made the crossings look like a piece of cake and sped through but we had to carefully tread into the streams. That meant the lorries went way ahead of us to maintain their schedules and once again we depended on Vivek Basnyat and his Ford Ranger to lead the way. Making sure all of the vehicles passed without any problem was the main priority and it took some careful maneuvering and instruction following to get the job done. As technically challenging as it was, driving through the canyons was an experience that few get a chance to attempt. Neither words nor pictures could do this part of the trip justice. We merged into the more commonly travelled road and headed towards Muktinath Temple to round off the trip and get some good food in our bellies. DAY 6: JOMSOM TO POKHARA This was the last leg of our trip and once again we would be stopping at Tatopani for lunch. To punctuate the entire trip in style, some of the participants decided to take a dip in the hot springs before heading back to Pokhara where a feast awaited us. Go Ford Nepal and Yeti Travels Pvt Ltd pulled off a magnificent expedition into Lo Manthang. They exemplified their expertise and capability to undertake such voyages and shed light on the possibility and importance of such an avenue in tourism of Nepal. A special shout out to the rest of the sponsors: Maxxis Tyres, Ironman 4x4 and Bacardi are also in order. It was a job well done. Take a bow.

Before we begin, we would like to extend our congratulations to ats elgi on being the top supplier of automotive garage components in the nepalese market. This feat surely must not have come easy. Would you please detail ats equipments’ journey till now and it’s plans for the future? Thank you very much for your congratulations. Now, ATS Elgi has been in the market from 1984. Back then, we had been manufacturing compressors for the industries and covered many sectors. Compressors are a pneumatic power source, much like hydro power, and are important like how ac power is. Elgi also was involved in the automotive sector but they used to import everything from india with no local support. When I came into this position, I was responsible for both the sectors. Without having an air of arrogance, I would say that the journey so far has been a cake walk. I say this because the automobile industry has been continuously evolving and growing. And not only is it developing itself but it is helping the other industries as well. Automobiles are and asset for everyone in the contemporary times and has provided excellent opportunities for people like me.

In my case, the market was looking for local supplier with local networks. For growth, local support is essential. For instance, a contact from Kolkata will have a hard time getting his permit and to live here will prove to be costly for the. Then they have invested their time for the whole process, starting from the designing phase itself. It was too tedious for foreign people and as a local person; it was easy for me to take over this job. I was also lucky enough to be working with efficiency during the maoist insurgency. While the other industries were down, cars from indian companies started coming here and eventually maintain a stock here. They made it their criterion for the workshops to have all the needed equipment to carry out aftersales services, and we were the ones. After being assured that we were capable, then only did they provided us with their cars. And that was a walk in the park for us. Many companies did came into the game and provided us with a competition, but soon vanished away because they were looking to make quick money. The reason we have been going on strong for over 40 years is because we want to serve, not make money we want to help our client and customers, and contribute to the development of our economy. In all honesty, this isn’t a very profitable sector, and that is probably why most competitors have backed out. What we actually do is to supply the workshops to make their work flow efficient. We help them to serve the automotive industry, and in turn, help the economy. This field demands consistency, devotion, and patience above all, and we possessing that, have come to where we are today. That is very admirable. Now, Elgi caters to many industries. So, how prominent is the automotive industry for you? If one were to go through my sales book, they can see that the automotive industry occupies around 40% of my entire sales. For this, I have to thank the quality and working efficiency of Elgi and the customers for having faith in us. I must say that it is a great privilege to be shortlisted as a supplier by almost all the automotive companies in india, and that list contains a very few number of names. We have taken up the initiative to take on the burden of maintaining their workshops so that they can focus on their chief target. They have responded positively, so i would be wrong to say that it is not going smoothly. This industry has been very beneficial for us. Does seem so indeed! Apart from the market outside, what have you been offering in the nepalese market? From the smallest things like a pair of pliers or hammers to large scale equipments like heavy duty assembling machineries. We cater to a wide range facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

WHAT WE ACTUALLY DO IS TO SUPPLY THE WORKSHOPS TO MAKE THEIR WORK FLOW EFFICIENT. WE HELP THEM TO SERVE THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY, AND IN TURN, HELP THE ECONOMY of products that a workshop may need to reach a high standard. We are essentially the one stop solution. Now, with modern technologies on the rise, a radical shift from analogue and mechanical machines to electronic is much important. This is more efficient and we want our clients in the nepalese market to have that efficiency, and hence do our best provide accordingly. And how do you plan on strengthening your presence here in the auto sector? Like I said, technology is advancing and it is a must that we should move according to it. We seek to provide the latest and the greatest of products and equipments. Also, we want to pose as a one stop solution, which means having a wide number of items in our list. Unlike others who just sell the machinery but not the essentials to maintain it, we seek you provide everything that one may need, from installation to after sales. Also, we do everything legally and take care of our employees and their families. We’ve been in the game for long and have no plans of moving away, so being consistent in what we do is the best way to go about it. Well said! And what is the competition like? We have come a long way and are doing well, but it would be idiotic to not acknowledge our competitors. As I said, most have come into the game and have gone out of it. Those who have sustained do prove to be a competition. Now, I’m not going to take any names, but one such competitor actually bought a car from us and purposely drove it off a cliff just to denounce our name. There have been many instances where such competitors have forcefully tried to put a black mark on us; but have failed. This is because we know who we are and our customers know who we are as well. Our tractors are safe to drive and people trust us because of the quality we deliver and the services we offer. I will not say that we are cheap, but that our prices are right and justified, and that’s one of the major resons we have managed to stay ahead of the competition. With that being said, many had started with us in this sector and have surpassed us, but we are happy where we are. Sure, there is a long way to go, but the position we are in is a positive one. Like the competition, what are the challenges? This sector is perhaps one of the most difficult sectors to function in. I say this because it is very hard to get financed. Let’s look at an example of starting a private workshop for this. Now, to begin, one needs to have a property for the workshop. This property should be enough to give to the bank as a mortgage. Also, the location of it must be proper as it is more essential than fancy equipments. There should be and easy availability of water, electricity and accessible by the clients. Most people rent out as an easy road for this, but when it turns lucrative, the owner of the land takes over the business. Investment is really heavy in this segment. AUTOLIFE APRIL 2017 55

OWNER’S REVIEW

I went to check the Tata Storme and the marketing staffs at Tata were very convincing. I used to drive Suzuki Swift and Fiat Punto, so I have some experience with other cars as well but the Safari Storme proved to be a very good investment. The Safari Storme is very spacious, aesthetically pleasant and has an attractive build quality. The SUV also provides a decent mileage range. In comparison to other SUVs in the segment, the SUV is equally comfortable. I have taken the Storme to quite a few places outside the valley and it provided a supple ride quality. The after sales service is up to mark. I definitely would and I have, infact, recommended the Storme to many of my friends as well. The thing about Tata Safari Storme is that it matches effortless power with unmatched luxury, and if anyone wants that quality, Tata Storme is the best option to choose for its price range.

AUTOLIFE EVOLUTION

EVOLUTION OF HONDA CARS

AN OUTPOURING OF PASSION Evolution in the wild is how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly, evolution in the automotive world, however is a little different. Soichiro Honda, born November 17, 1906 was an independent person in a country not known for its willingness to accept nonconformists, who went on and created an automobile giant despite the opposition of the Japanese government. Soichiro was the epitome of “doing what you love” because the love he had for automobiles was nothing short of unconditional and true. Let us see how this caterpillar turned into a butterfly.

The history of Honda goes all the way back to the early 40s. The company was a result of the efforts of Soichiro Honda, who always had an interest in automobiles and innovations and technologies. Soichiro first worked at a garage, where he tuned cars. In 1937, Soichiro decided to move on and created his own company, the Tokai Seiki, which produced piston rings. The company had an opportunity to supply piston rings to Toyota but due to the poor quality of their products, the contract was lost.

Nevertheless, by 1941 Soichiro worked hard and attended engineering school to learn more about Toyota’s quality control processes. A year later, Soichiro was able to deliver massproduction pistons that met Toyota’s standards. The same year, Toyota bought 40% shares of the Tokai Seiki Company. In 1942, the Second World War took place. Soon enough, in 1944, the B-29 incident occurred, destroying Tokai Seiki’s plant. Therefore, since there was nothing left, Soichiro decided to sell the remains of the company to Toyota for which he obtained ¥450,000. Yes, that’s how Honda started out, supplying parts for Toyota. After the money he got from selling the Tokai Seiki Company, he started the Honda Company.

He invested the money in establishing the Honda Technical Research Institute in 1946. The goal of this institute was to develop and build small 2-cycle motorbike engines. In 1947, the company introduced its first product, the A-Type Bicycle Engine. A year later, Soichiro established the Honda Motor Company, Ltd. The company was quite successful and the first US store opened in 1959 in Los Angeles. Three years later, Honda’s automobile business began with the release of its first sports car, the S500.

In 1967, the company announced its first front-wheel-drive mini car, the N360 that gained a lot of popularity in the Japanese market. In 1968, the N Series of Mini Honda cars produced by the company topped Japanese Sales and a year later the company began production of automobiles in Taiwan. This was Honda’s first overseas production facility. Regardless, the company managed quite well and was the top seller for three years.

In 1972, they released their most popular vehicle of all time: the Civic. This mean machine was the first vehicle to comply with the 1970 US Clean Air Act and immediately gained a lot of recognition worldwide. In fact, the Civic is one of Honda’s vehicles that are still extremely popular and still in production, with more than 10 generations produced since.

In 1976, Honda produced another extremely successful vehicle, the Accord. This vehicle proved to be incredibly efficient and reliable and just like the Civic gained a lot of recognition in the Japanese auto industry. Additionally, Honda introduced Honda Life which represented the company’s efforts in competing in the compact car, pickup, and delivery van segment. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

By 1982, Honda began automobile production in the US, which was a first for a Japanese automobile manufacturer. A few years later, Honda introduced the Acura car brand, which was the first ever Japanese luxury automobile manufacturer. Therefore, the 80s proved to be an incredibly successful period for Honda. After launching the Acura Brand in the US in 1988, Honda’s total production exceeds 15 million units. A year later, Honda Accord became the bestselling car in the US and a new generation of the vehicle was created with exceptional styling cues, a powerful engine, and a variety of options and new features. By 1992, Honda’s worldwide production exceeded 20 million units, and business was blooming.

In 1995, the worldwide production of Honda Civic exceeded 10 million units alone and other automobiles production exceeds 30 million units. A few years later, Honda introduced the LEV (Low Emission Vehicles) Civic Ferio. The same year, the production of the Honda EV plus started in the US. In 1999, Honda introduced its famous ‘Insight Hybrid’, which was perhaps the first properly functioning hybrid vehicle in the US. By 2000, Honda’s automobile production rates exceeded 10 million in the US and Honda Fit was number-one in annual sales. In 2003, Honda was incredibly successful and released new versions of the Civic and Accord, allowing the company to exceed production of 50 million units.

Today, Honda is the world’s largest automobile manufacturer of internal combustion engines. Additionally, the company is also the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. In addition to selling vehicles, motorcycles, parts, and engines, the company manufactures power generators, personal watercraft, marine engines, and garden equipment. Not to mention, Honda is involved with developing artificial intelligence technology, introducing its ASIMO robot in 2000 also Honda has revenue of ¥11.85 trillion and as of 2014 the company has more than 200,000 employees worldwide. Additionally, over a period of 66 years, Honda has been under the leadership of only seven individuals. To conclude what we can say is, this is what the word “evolution” is made of.

KEEP IT NICE AND CLEAN FACT!!! Any car regardless of the model becomes pleasing to the eye if it is clean, also fact, No matter what you do; your car always ends up a mess. And given the “little dusty” predicament our city is in at the moment, it will not take long before your car transforms in a dusty trash bag on wheels. Fortunately, if you promise to be a little less lazy and read through and follow some tips on keeping your car clean that we have laid out below, we promise you that your car will look cleaner provided you work on it. So, let’s keep it short and get right to it.

2 1 62

Wax it occasionally- It means you have to buy something and it means you have to spend some time after washing your car, but it’s an investment that pays off. Waxing your car occasionally makes washing it the next time easier. So spend a little time during the first few tries eh?

Do not eat inside your car- If you can avoid eating in your car, you won’t have to deal with all the wrappers, cartons, stains and crumbs that inevitably follow.

4 AUTOLIFE APRIL 2017

3

Knock them shoes before getting in- Wherever it snows or rains, you really can’t keep your car from getting dirty on the inside, but you can do a lot just by knocking your boots before you get in. Sit down on the seat with your legs outside and knock your shoes full of dirt together. Then you just swivel in.

Quick cleans- If there’s a spill or a stain, clean it quickly before it becomes impossible to remove. While orange juice sounds refreshing to the ear, a stain of orange juice on your seat after you dropped it a week ago doesn’t look refreshing to the eye, neither does the smell to the nose. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

The Punto Pure is affordable yet stylish; hence I opted for this hatchback. Both the exterior and interior of the Punto Pure is attractive. The Punto Pure is a very good bargain for its price range. Due to a high ground clearance, the ride quality does not feel bumpy on our roads as compared to other hatchbacks. I have taken the Punto Pure for long drives and it is very comfortable to ride on the highways as well. The leg space is also very comfortable for the passengers. So, all in all I have found the Punto Pure to be satisfactory and comfortable as per my expectations.

Dr. Anjana Dangol ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OBSTETRICIAN & GYNECOLOGIST DHULIKHEL HOSPITAL

Regarding the aftersales department, I don’t have any complaints as I have found the staffs to be very decent. To conclude, I am very happy with the overall performance of the Punto Pure and I would definitely recommend it to others as well.

5

Keep it covered- Everyone may not have access to a garage, but one can get a cover for their car. While it may be an annoyance to put the cover on and take it off from time to time, but considering the fact that mother nature always finds a way of bringing every living bird to roost in the tree just above your parked car you might want to park it somewhere with a roof or get a cover on should you have to park for long hours.

6 7

Set a washing routineeither set up a schedule for taking your car to a carwash, or you need to start a routine for washing your own car. Mark it out on your calendar. Stay regimented and your car won’t ever stay dirty.

9 64

Take out the trash- Make it a habit of taking out the accumulated trash while getting out of the car, there are a few ways which will help you set this habit. Every time you stop for fuel, reach into all the cubby holes and pull out the trash so you can throw it out. Every time you stop and get out of your car for any reason, grab all the trash in your car. If you stop and your car already looks clean, look around for one thing in your car that doesn’t strictly need to be there and take it out. Remember not to make the environment dirty while keeping your car clean. Use the dustbin like an educated human being.

AUTOLIFE APRIL 2017

8

Use Microfiber cloth- Not only are these cloths more hygienic, they avoid the need for expensive (and often harmful) detergents and they get things looking cleaner in a lot less time. And given the “little dusty” situation of the city, this will work wonders to swipe the dirt right off of your dashboard and seats.

Keep it clean so it stays clean- The easiest way to keep your car from getting dirty is to put in quality time and clean it once and make sure it stays that way. If your car is always clean, you will be more inclined to toss out any trash and wipe out any dirt right away. Similar to the dirty laundry analogy: If you have one pair of dirty socks on the floor, it’s much easier to put that second pair there, then the third, then the.... Eventually it becomes a mess. Also, if your passengers see a clean car, they will notice and clean up after themselves, not to mention compliment your ride. So how about keeping it nice and clean yeah?

Intelligent frame configuration has played a key role in keeping wet weight down to around 210 kg. Ducati Scrambler Café Racer:

The Ducati Scrambler Café Racer is the Scrambler interpretation of the legendary ‘60s bikes that triggered a motorcycling revolution. Free spirit and style: with its “Black Coffee” colour scheme, the Ducati Scrambler Café Racer takes us from the 1960s all the way to today. The Ducati Scrambler world and Café Racer culture share a style that extends beyond the bike to encompass apparel and accessories. The Ducati Scrambler Café Racer thus broadens the scope of the Scrambler brand which, now, for the first time, offers a fresh take on what was one of motorcycling’s most influential movements. This version has 17” wheels with Pirelli DIABLO™ ROSSO II tyres (120/70 ZR 17 at the front and 180/55 ZR17 at the rear), a pivotal feature on this moreScramblerthan-ever version that provides plenty of scope for personalisation. The Ducati Scrambler Café Racer is powered by the air and oil-cooled twincylinder Desmodue engine taken from the Icon, EURO 4-compliant and with black-trimmed covers and machined cooling fins. The characteristic teardrop tank with interchangeable aluminium side panels is combined with a dedicated seat featuring a cover for the passenger section. Rear-view mirrors mounted on the aluminium handlebar ends draw their inspiration from the ‘60s “race” look, while the radial front brake pump is a typically modern component able to ensure true sport bike braking performance. And that’s not all: the Termignoni exhaust with dual tailpipes and black anodized aluminium cover, the nose fairing, lateral number holders and stubby mudguard are all clear references to the bikes that roared down British streets back in the ‘60s. Price: Rs 25 Lakhs

Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled:

The Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled faithfully revives that spirit - but without abandoning the unique Scrambler lifestyle values - and extends the new Bolognabuilt brand into the “easy off-road” sector. Thanks to the modified frame and suspension, the spoked wheels (19” at the front) and ground-breaking lines, this bike is simply perfect for those who want to be able to get off the asphalt and take a lessbeaten track. The off-road capability of the Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled is also evident in the type-approved headlight mesh guard, the high mudguards (specially designed for this version) and, of course, the engine skid plate. Thanks to a higher seat (a 20 mm lower one is available as an optional), suspension with extended travel (now 200 mm) and off-road style footpegs with removable rubber pads, this Scrambler is also characterised by a new riding position. The passenger pegs - separated from the rider’s - are removable. The Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled inherits its logo from the Urban Enduro and is a natural evolution of the latter towards a more off-road style. Just like in the previous year, the destination for the 9th Enfield Rendezvous & Poker Run stuck on to the lakeside city of Pokhara and was set for 13-15 April, 2017. For the fifth time in the past five years, Rabi Thapa from Sacred Summits handed us the keys to a Royal Enfield Desert Storm that would be our companion for the next three days. With all the costs for the accommodation, participation and bike rental waived, we were all smiles. The meeting point was set at KhulaManch and by 8.00 A.M, all of the participants wearing their official event T-shirt had gathered at the venue in their thumpers. As in the previous year, to make things easier, the entire poker hand was dealt before the riders began the ride. This made things a lot easier and convenient. After breakfast, the participants were asked to pick up all the hand of the Poker cards. But Lady Luck just didn’t favour us like always. A short welcome speech by Rabi Thapa, CEO Sacred Summits (P) Ltd and Biraj Bahadur Bista - Member of Parliament, Minister of Federal affairs and Local Development preceded the grand flag off. Mr. Biraj Bista greeted all the participants with a welcome speech and stressed on the needs of similar events in the future for tourism development. Following this was a quick ‘Ride Safety’ briefing which was done by the road captain Pramod ‘Goofy’ Shrestha. The riders were escorted by the Tourist Police through the busy city traffic. With Pramod ‘Goofy’Shrestha leading the

pack, we along with 250 participants, embarked on a nearly 200-km-long journey to Pokhara. It was a pretty sight to have the bullet train thundering our way of Kathmandu making it probably the biggest thunder ride in the Himalayas. After riding down the winding 20km road towards Naubise, we reached our first pit-stop. We regrouped at a highway restaurant for some light snacking and refreshments. After an hour, we thundered back on the highway. After a non-stop 2 hours ride, we made our next pit-stop in Mugling, where a tasty Thakali lunch (courtesy of Yeti Airlines) awaited us at the Rupsi restaurant. A group photo session was conducted after the sumptuous lunch. The convoy then moved to Pokhara, only to make a pit-stop at Akala Highway Restaurant, Manapang, at a distance of 35 kms before reaching Pokhara. After a refreshing break with free Red Bull Energy drinks (courtesy of Red Bull), we regrouped and continued in tandem towards the lakeside city. The thrilling first day ride finally ended upon our arrival at Hotel Pokhara Grande. Hotel Pokhara Grande is a newest addition to the five star hotels facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

of Pokhara, providing a right blend of allround excellence and unparalleled levels of service. The hotel has also got its name listed amongst 10 best hotels of Nepal. We were allotted our rooms and given some time to refresh ourselves for the gala New Year Eve celebration in the evening which was headlined by “The Midnight Riders” – a hugely popular hard rock band from Kathmandu. After a short refreshing break, we gathered in the hotel’s lawn to enjoy the free flow of lavish snacks and hard beverages – Royal Reserve Whisky and Xing Vodka from Premier Organics, and Carlsberg beer from Gorkha Brewery. The New Year’s Eve celebrations’ began in the hotel lawn, with the band playing an enthralling set of classic rock and roll numbers along with the bands’ newest hits. This was the end of the first day. After the crazy night, a heavy breakfast was in place. After the breakfast, we then rode uphill towards Jana chetana secondary school situated in Nirmal pokhari, continuing with the tradition of incorporating charity in the event. We distributed textbooks, children’s books and sporting goods to the school. The rest of the day was then free to chill out either in the hotel or Pokhara. We decided to retreat in the hotel itself where the friendly laughs and banter of the biker brothers made the resort a happening place. Later in the evening, the much-awaited prize distribution ceremony took place at the buzzing Club Paradiso. Enfield Rendezvous & Poker Run is also one of the most popular platforms where custom motorcycle makers showcase their passion for motorcycling through modifications. Best Modified Enfield Award was won by Sudeep Lama. The prizes seem to keep flowing. The coveted Best Poker Hand Award was bagged by Saurabh Srivastava from Allahabad, India. Keerthi from Bangalore,

India won the category of the Longest Distance Rider. The Hardluck Award was won by Pradeep “Gaurango” Rana. Similarly, Rajendra Prasad won the Senior Citizens Award. Rosalynn Lushai Gal was named the Most Supportive Lady Rider. Similarly, Dhar Itri bagged the Youngest Female Rider award. Zero Engineering and Arun Maharjan won the other miscellaneous awards. The prizes were sponsored by a variety of companies like Wildlife Resorts, Hotels, Restaurants & Spas, Accessories and Lifestyle. The morning breakfast the next day officially completed the 9th edition of the amazing Poker Run. And it definitely did not disappoint this year either. The 9th Enfield Rendezvous & Poker Run was a wellorchestrated affair and a commendable feat considering there were over 250 Royal Enfield motorcycles through the route to Pokhara at a single go. Sacred Summits Pvt. ltd. did a splendid job of organizing the largest motorcycle rally in Nepal consisting of riders and participants from all over the world. The Enfield Rendezvous and Poker Run has come to symbolize the motorcycling culture in Nepal. Every year, we see more people participating to experience the bond among people and share a common passion for the Royal Enfield way of motorcycling at its purest. The actual feeling of riding a Royal Enfield on the Enfield Rendezvous and Poker Run is definitely something we can’t define. It’s a legacy! We’ll definitely be eagerly waiting for the next Poker Run.
