EDITORIAL VOL 5 ISSUE 2

W

We’re looking for some more clever euphemisms to break the news about the arrival of the Jaguar in Nepal, but it seems like we’ve used them all. No, wait… a new killer beast prowls the roads… and… no, forget about it. We’ll just cut to the chase: The Jaguar is here. The legendary British marquee is here in Nepal and you get an insight on an exclusive test drive in the Jaguar XJL. If you’re giddy with excitement, we completely understand. You’d probably be satisfied with just the Jaguar alone, but that’s not how we roll. KUV 100 lands on our cover as a fresh new SUV that, in our opinion, pushes the boundaries of the mundane city slicking urban vehicle. Read our full review inside. Also in this issue, we rekindle an old flame as we straddle the Ducati Scrambler Sixty2 the younger sibling of the Scrambler we completely adored. At half the displacement, it was a quandary whether it was half as fun. In true AutoLife style, we test it out to its limit to see for ourselves. Another Italian on our radar was the Benelli TNT 25. The brand is working hard to make a mark in the industry, and we got a chance to test it out too. It was a fun issue to work on, and we’re sure you’re pretty stoked about the Jaaag! So we won’t keep you too long, go ahead, flip to the XJL’s review. We’ll catch you next month. Cheers.

2017 KTM 390 DUKE SPOTTED UNDISGUISED For bike enthusiasts, this news could be a great thing. The 2017 KTM 390 Duke has been spotted testing in Europe. The spy images of what appear to be the 2017 version of KTM 390 Duke, has been doing rounds on the internet these days. As you can notice, the 2017 KTM 390 Duke will be completely overhauled with an updated design. The 2017 390 Duke is almost a mirror image of the the KTM 1290 SuperDuke. Upfront is an all new, split headlight which resembles the 1290 SuperDuke. The instrument cluster somewhat looks identical to the 1290 SuperDuke. The motorcycle continues to use a low rise handlebar and grips from the current model. However, the handlebar is painted black. The 2017 model also gets adjustable brake and clutch lever. It also gets bolted tank extensions with contrasting colour, an attribute seen on the biggest Duke from KTM. The new model may also get an exposed sub-frame, again, something that we already saw on the 1290 SuperDuke. The motorcycle will continue to use the Metzeler tyres. The current model delivers 43 bhp of power and it is expected to improve with the 2017 version. Surely, there’s a lot to look forward to from the Austrian offering next year.

TATA TIAGO AKTIV CROSSOVER TO ENTER PRODUCTION According to various media reports, Tata Motors is likely to roll out the Aktiv crossover as a fully-built unit rather than offering as a kit. If this rings true, the Tiago Aktiv would become the most affordable crossover in India. Initially, Tata is likely to produce the Tiago Aktiv only in small numbers and is likely to be increased later after seeing the response. The Tiago Aktiv comes with plastic add-ons for the front bumper which are finished in matte black and complimented by a metallic strip in a brushed finish. Apart from that, there are more plastic addons for the side sills and rear bumper with metallic touches, along with roof rails, body graphics and snazzier alloy wheels. The roof section, front grille and ORVM caps have all been blacked out in high gloss. Powering the Aktiv is likely to be the same engine that powers the Tiago.

OWNER’S REVIEW

Zest from Tata Motors is one of the best compact sedans available in the market right now. I opted to go with the Zest because of its pricing and the Harman Infotainment system. The pricing is an appealing factor as it is priced very attractively amongst its competitors. I went for the semi- option model rather than the high end as the semi has more features than some other high end option cars in this segment. The economy figure of the car was pretty good too so it made the choice easier. The most striking feature of the Zest has to be the projector headlights. The projector headlights with LED DRLs make the Zest stand out in the crowd. The interiors are on par with the exteriors. The interiors are very comfortable even on long rides they provide a lot of comfort. As mentioned earlier, the Harman infotainment system is one of the best available in the market. The 5” touchscreen multimedia system offers superior connectivity features and unmatched entertainment quality. As of now, I haven’t done anything to the speakers, but in my opinion if we add sub-woofer to this it’ll probably be one of the best audio systems out there. Talking about the performance, I am very much satisfied with the Zest. The Zest is engineered to give you a powerful drive no matter what. The multi-drive modes: Eco, City and Sports which is not available in this segment are amazing. The ride quality is pleasant and the ground clearance of the car is pretty good too even though it’s a sedan. The 175mm clearance helps in tackling the rough roads of Nepal. I used to drive a hatchback before the Zest and it would be very unstable while cruising on highway speeds. Since the car is new I haven’t taken the car for long drives, however, I am confident that it will sail on long trips easily. As with the aftersales service, Sipradi have an excellent after sales team. They offer a pick-up service too. Suppose if you have a breakdown or have to give it for a service, then you can call the service center and they will pick up the car within an hour depending on the conditions. The sales people are also very friendly so it is easy to deal with them. To conclude, I can say that Zest from Tata Motors is the best compact sedan in Nepal right now.

AUTOLIFE TESTRIDE

DUCATI SCRAMBLER SIXTY2

THE SIBLING

34

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016

Words & Photos : Autolife Team When the Ducati Scrambler first entered the country, we deemed it the best Ducati we ever had the fortune of riding. Not because it was the fastest, best designed, or most aggressive machine but because it exhibited the raw spirit of motorcycling that we fell insanely in love with. We wanted one very badly.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

However, it was still a pretty big investment to make. It was sensibly priced for a Ducati that provided so much character, but it was still expensive. A year later, news came of the arrival of the smaller sibling of the Scrambler, the Scrambler Sixty2. Named after the year the original Ducati single-cylinder Scrambler was introduced, the Scrambler weighed in at 399cc. We expected it to be possibly more affordable; maybe something we could see ourselves buying. We wanted it all over again. It was crushing to find out that the price cut wasn’t as much as we’d hoped for. Not even close. The Scrambler Sixty2 is the latest addition to the Scrambler brood and it is positioned as an entry-level, premium choice. Something for riders who find the 803cc engine a little too much to handle. Because the Sixty2 shares most of the high quality components from its elder brother, Ducati argues that the price is justified. We took matters into our own hands so we could really judge the Sixty2 for ourselves. Here’s how it went.

STYLING Built on the same platform as the 800cc Scramblers, the styling and stance of the Scrambler Sixty2 are very similar to the earlier Scrambler. It is a beautiful fusion of retro styling and modern engineering which gives the traditional bikes of the 70’s a present-day touch. It has a comparatively more simplified metal fuel tank with a little extra fuel capacity. The same teardrop shape has been carried on though. To save costs, the decorative aluminum covers have been ditched. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Ducati have done a splendid job of making sure the Scrambler Sixty2 isn’t mistaken for a runt. Dimension wise, both Scramblers (the bigger 800cc and the Sixty2) are identical. With the Sixty2 you get a steel swingarm, a narrower rear wheel and tire, and a less expensive Showa non-adjustable 41mm fork up front (replacing the Scrambler’s inverted fork) followed by a preloadadjustable KYB shock out back. A conventional-mount two-piston caliper from Brembo replaces a radial-mount four-pot job. A classic, single, round, fully digital AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016 35

gauge displays speed on top and rpm on the bottom. Other displays include two trip odometers, standard odometer, trip fuel indicator, ambient temperature, maintenance reminders, time, and warning lights for fuel reserve and ABS. Other lights are for oil pressure, high beam, neutral, blinkers, and warnings for redline.

PERFORMANCE Despite being on the smaller side of the spectrum in the Ducati stable, the Scrambler Sixty2 elicits a primitive experience similar to that of a big bike. The 800cc Scrambler wasn’t an intimidating motorcycle to ride; it was exciting but not scary. It’s the same case with the Sixty2. It has a wide up-swept single piece bar and a low wide seat which provides you with an upright riding position but a comfortable ride. The 40hp L twin engine won’t let you feel like there is any lack in power. In fact, it powers through the tarmac with vigor and enthusiasm.

You won’t be holding on for dear life, something we’ve been accustomed to doing with anything that runs on wheels and has a Ducati badge on it. Push it through the revs and it propels itself forward in a calm manner. The throttle is crisp and responsive to your commands. Don’t expect it to roar like a beast, but it does exude a decent engine note that ensures it’s no home appliance. Maneuvering the Sixty2 is a breeze and a lot of fun. It leans into corners with ease and exits from it without breaking its stride. It’s light enough to slalom it through traffic but stable enough to hold its ground on open highway tarmacs. It felt so confident and surefooted that we took the Sixty2 off the road and onto some dirt. Not too surprisingly, it remained nimble there too. In all honesty, we think it was more fun taking it off the blacktop and onto offroad terrains. Equipped with a great set of dual purpose tyres and supple suspension, it was at home.

IT FELT SO CONFIDENT AND SUREFOOTED THAT WE TOOK THE SIXTY2 OFF THE ROAD AND ONTO SOME DIRT. 36

Single disc front brake systems don’t really come as a shortcoming. They do a great job of slowing down the motorcycle and bringing it to a halt. It is ABS equipped as standard.

VERDICT Scramblers aren’t fussy, they’re more about passion and motorcycling spirit. The Sixty2 falls under the same description. It is a fun and easy bike to ride which is built for all terrain fun. We pushed it through the tarmac and took it off it. It excelled in both avenues and begged us to ask more from it. The more we asked the more it complied. Getting used to the fact that there is a lower power output from a motorcycle from the Ducati stable isn’t easy, but that’s only because Ducati have set the standards high. There is plenty of punch in the Sixty2. It shares premium components with its elder sibling and does well to provide riders with a premium feeling. However, we wouldn’t say it is bang for the buck. When we test drove the Scrambler 800cc, we thought it was perfectly priced. The Sixty2 is half the displacement, and despite being more than half the fun, we were hoping it would be priced more affordably. However, considering the fact that you get much of the premium feel and retro classic styling and motorcycling spirit that Scrambler first offered, we can’t remain bitter at Ducati. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Owner’s Review I already have a petrol hatchback which I normally drive for its practicality. However, I decided to buy the Skoda Rapid diesel because it will serve as an alternative incase we have fuel shortages in the future. Despite the competition, the Skoda Rapid is the game changer in the segment. Packed with power and distinctively elegant in its looks, the Skoda Rapid is quite an on looker on the road. The front façade of the sedan which resembles luxurious European manufacturers make sure everyone has their attention on the car. I also like the rims on my model. Coming to the interior, Skoda Rapid gets extensive features that come with various versions of the car that you can buy from. Moreover, space and comfort is pretty much awesome and one can sit comfortably and easily make out the difference during long drives. The best part of interiors is that it offers excellent leg space for tall people and superior sitting comfort. It is very much comfortable in the segment for a family like mine.

Mr.Subendra Thapa Managing Director SubaGriha Institute

Skoda Rapid

Engine has been the best part of the vehicle when it comes to Skoda. The engine is very powerful, very smooth and efficient. It also requires less maintenance. It also offers a decent fuel efficiency of 12-13 kmpl on the city and approximate around 15 kmpl on the highways. Talking about the ride quality, it offers great ride quality that comes with good suspension. Moreover, handing is super you can easily manoeuvre while speeding and turns. Moreover, I would like to appreciate the dealer and very much pleased with the team for their aftersales service. The main part is the team is more focused on solving issues and queries as other teams usually look on for selling. Overall, the Skoda Rapid is a very good purchase and I am very much happy with Skoda MAW’s assistance.

AUTOLIFE FEATURE

S.O.S.  STARS OF SAFET Y YOU’RE SAFER IN A CAR THAN YOU ARE ON A MOTORCYCLE… BUT ARE YOU REALLY? Words: Kalash Ratna Tuladhar

Thanks to the introduction of great financing schemes and the increase in the general disposable income of the public, owning a personal vehicle isn’t very difficult. Kathmandu is seeing an influx of vehicle owners at a significant rate. On the downside, road traffic is worsening, pollution is on the rise, and the number of road accidents is increasing at an alarming rate. This brings into question the actual reliability of the safety specifications of vehicles, and whether they are a superior mode of transport in comparison to motorcycles.

How safe are we, really? One can only be so much of a safe driver on the road. No matter how focused or experienced you are at driving, the factor that ultimately saves your life in an accident is the safety standards incorporated in your vehicle or your safety gear. With 1.5 million vehicles on the road, safety should definitely be our top concern in the decision making process of buying a vehicle or safety gear. The government is aware of the number of rising vehicles, number of people on the roads is rising, and road accidents are also rising, but there have been very little changes that are being made. The standardization policies are only available for public transport vehicles. Private cars are not regulated through any safety standards, nor are any safety equipments like helmets regulated to the extent that it should be. Even though vehicles are getting affordable to own, they are by no means cheap. It is for many still a lifelong investment, or at least a long term one. So with this in mind, we should take it upon ourselves to measure the vehicle or safety equipment of choice to a certain level of quality/standard to make sure of your own safety.

Kalash is an automotive engineering technician and a motorcycle enthusiast with a deep love for puns.

How to assess your vehicle’s safety How do we do that? Well, there are a number of resources available at our fingertips nowa-days. With the help of a simple Google search, a detailed review of any vehicle or safety equipment is possible. It is a relief to know that we don’t have to be involved in an accident to know for sure how safe we are. So let us take some measures as to how we can keep ourselves and our investments safe. There are a few regulatory bodies that deal with safety, and they should be our bible of sorts. For instance, The NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) deals with car safety during impacts. They are a great source of data regarding crash safety for any car manufactured. A recent online article mentioning test results for 5 cars designed for Indian roads, caught my attention. In that article, crash tests results for those 5 cars were published followed by videos of the tests performed. When you pay hundreds of thousands of rupees to buy a car, you should be getting more than just a metal box that runs on four wheels. You want more out of it. Sadly, some of the cars offered in the market today is not far from a sheet metal box with an engine and wheels. These popular cars that we see a lot of around Kathmandu got a whopping, concussion inducing 0 (zero) star rating out of five stars for adult safety. That is disgraceful for any car manufacturer that claims to be a competitive name in the auto industry. So essentially, apart from the seatbelt that we “always” put on, there is nothing in these cars to stop us from being meat pulp on the road. Achieving a 0 star rating doesn’t necessarily

46

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016

mean that the car is not safe at all. According to the NCAP, a car that fulfills the minimum safety features built in to it, to be road legal, receives a 0 star rating. So let’s take a look at what the safety stars mean to us.

• A 1 star safety rating is achieved when the car is equipped with marginal crash protection. • 2 stars for a car with nominal crash protection but no crash avoidance technology. • 3 stars is awarded when it has an average to good occupant protection but lacking crash avoidance technology. • 4 stars to a car that has an overall good performance in crash protection with additional crash avoidance technology available as an option. • And finally, 5 stars to a car with overall good performance in crash protection well equipped with robust crash avoidance technology. It is also equally important to realize that the ways these tests are conducted are evolving every year. New methods are introduced, new strategies are taken and old ratings are updated to reflect these changes with their ratings adjusted. So when you look for a safety rating of a car just make sure you are looking at the most recent one available. (Check out the Euro NCAP website for more information: www.euroncap.com/en) It might be a bit overwhelming at first, but it is worth the hassle to put in a little extra effort into finding the safest car on your budget. You don’t always have to look for a 5 star rated car, but instead you should be aware of the level of safety it is going to provide you and your passengers in the worst case scenario. That way, you will have a clearer mindset when approached with a difficult situation. So folks, put your seatbelts on and remember, safety comes at a price.

IF SPACE IS THE NAME OF THE GAME, THEN THE KUV 100 WINS IT ALL DAY.

Following the footsteps of the XUV 500 and TUV300, the KUV 100 is the newest vehicle to enter the Mahindra & Mahindra stable with an alpha numeric badge. According to Mahinda’s plans. all monocoque vehicles that share a platform with the current XUV500 in the future will carry the XUV prefix, those that share the ladder frame platform of the Scorpio will be badged TUV-something and the compact cars on the new S101 platform will be branded KUV. They call this one the Kool Utility Vehicle One Double Oh (KUV 100), and claim it to be ‘kool’ and ‘kompact’ car. New segments in the auto industry have been coming up in recent times. With massive SUVs becoming less affordable and feasible, interest has been shifting towards compact vehicles. Recognizing this shift, Mahindra has cashed in on the trend with their most compact passenger vehicle ever made.

There’s a completely new approach to the designs, engine and chassis. Take one look at it and all of that becomes apparent pretty quickly. The KUV 100 enters the competition as an SUV that could be the worst nightmare for its hatchback competition. Displaying a completely new design and styling theme, the KUV 100 wants all the attention it can get, and it isn’t messing around.

EXTERIOR

It takes a little time to get used to the styling of the KUV 100, we’re being completely honest here. But we grew to love it. The styling is edgy and bold and not an orthodox approach which makes it all the more exciting when it comes to the KUV 100. This works out well since the design is focused on attracting the younger crowd.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Up front, the SUV-inspired contoured bonnet and dual colored bumper gives the Mahindra a strong jawline. The headlamps wrap around the front fender, a design aspect that Mahindra claims to have been inspired by wraparound sunglasses. To make this work, the headlamps have been split into two sections. One section houses the main head lamps and LED DRLs while the other is an extension that integrates the engine badging and side indicators. Because the lower bumper isn’t the same color as the body, it gives the vehicle a very likable dual tone. The aqua blue and black went particularly well. The bumper houses neat fog lamps and a contrasting silver mock bash plate The design elements come in stronger as you move onto the profile of the KUV 100. Designers at the headquarters have experimented with a disproportionate short length and the longish front AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016 49

section. Character lines run from the headlamps almost up to the door handles, through the bottom of the doors and a more prominent line that runs upwards from the rear door to the tail lamps. Another design aspect on the side is the ORVM shell that gets a clenched fist inspired design. Rear door handles are mounted on the pillars which gives the KUV 100 a two door appearance. Had it have larger wheels, the side profile would have been even more interesting. The fun keeps going in the rear, with the rectangular taillamp that protrudes slightly upwards since it sits below the extended haunch line. An integrated spoiler is standard across all variants.

seat with a foldable middle section that can seat children or small adults who will end up disgruntled for having to squeeze into the space. This comes optional on most trims; it comes standard in the base trim. The centre seat also folds up to act as an armrest for driver and passenger as well offer two cup holders. The centre console isn’t cluttered though, despite incorporating the stereo and climate control knobs. Stereo was very easy to connect to the Bluetooth, something that is more fancy than required in most cars. The KUV100 is also compatible with the Blue Sense app from Mahindra, which helps you control audio and check important vehicle alerts on your phone.

INTERIORS AND FEATURES

The steering wheel is chunky and sculpted well for extra grip and the silver accents similar to the centre console look sporty. Instrumentation is clear and easy to read. For a car this compact, the KUV 100 offers a lot of storage. For instance, the entire passenger seat folds upwards to give access to an under seat storage compartment. This section houses a removable storage bin with handles that can carry upto 10kg of weight. That’s not all, the rear section of the cabin also features a flat floor and there’s a covered storage area under it. A 243liter boot space expands to 473 liters with the seats folded.

Despite the compact nature of the KUV 100, it has a surprisingly spacious cabin. There is plenty of leg room and headroom for all the passengers. Keeping true to the idea of having more space, the gear knob and hand brake lever have been adapted onto the console. This means that there is no division between the passenger and driver’s side and the floor is flat. The reason for such a design is that the KUV100 is a 6-seater. Unlike a conventional car that gets two bucket seats, the SUV gets a regular driver seat and a bench like passenger

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016 51

PERFORMANCE

One thing about compact cars, they are a pleasure to drive around the city. The KUV100 offers both diesel and petrol engine options. We got our hands on the 1.2 Litre mFalcon 3 cylinder which has been mated to a new 5 speed manual transmission. Using 3 cylinders instead of the conventional four apparently reduces the friction. Producing a maximum power of 82PS at 5500rpm and 115Nm of torque available between 3500 and 3600rpm, the KUV 100 proves to be a punchy performer on the roads. Mid range revs are where it thrives and excels, thanks to the torquey nature it shows at lower revs. The all new monocoque chassis provide a lower kerb weight and better dynamics compared to a conventional ladder frame. Although it is categorized (loosely) as an SUV, it handles much like a hatchback. It is nimble and agile which makes it perfect for urban travel. Steering is light and weighs in well as speeds escalate. On paper, the KUV 100 is not an off roader and features a more hatchback like ground clearance of 170mm. But during our test drive we loitered off and lost our way, finding ourselves in the middle of nowhere. Inadvertently, the KUV 100 had to take on a little more off-road terrain than panned but it held up its own well. Braking is also very good, and all variants get ABS as standard. It isn’t confidence inspiring but it does get the job done.

VERDICT

As always, Mahindra offers an array of variants: the K2, K2+, K4, K4+, K6, K6+ and K8. You’re not short on options with the KUV 100. It has been deemed an SUV, but at heart it knows it finds itself more at home as a hatchback. And that’s not a bad thing at all. The design overhaul is a major change and we’ll still have to see how it pans out for Mahindra, we personally grew to like (love/tolerate) it. It is a good performer and has a fun peppy engine. If space is the name of the game, then the KUV 100 wins it all day. So it is a very practical vehicle for the urban lifestyle. For anyone having trouble getting used to the looks, we can’t really see the fuss. Sure it might take a little while to love it, but keep an open mind and your perspectives might change.

2016 KIA SPORTAGE Now in Nepal

56

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016

Continental Associates, the sole authorized distributor of KIA vehicles in Nepal, has launched the all-new 2016 Sportage in the Nepalese market. The all-new Kia Sportage made its global debut at the 2015 Frankfurt International Motor Show, with an attractive, all-new interior and exterior design, a host of advanced new technology features and greater quality. The fourth-generation Sportage, Kia Motors’ longest-running nameplate, wraps contemporary design around a structure that is both stiffer and more spacious than before. Advanced driver assistance technologies, significant suspension and steering improvements, and available intelligent AWD vastly improve the Sportage’s driving dynamics while premium materials create a class-up experience in an otherwise utilitarian segment.

grille resides vertically in the front fascia while the headlights are positioned higher, sweeping back along the outer edges of the sharply detailed hood. A lower, wider front clip – enlarged to provide greater engine cooling – adds visual volume to the lower half of the Sportage’s face, resulting in a planted and aggressive stance, though it keeps the same overall width, as its predecessor.

The “face” of the new Sportage features the most significant change over the outgoing model. Kia’s hallmark “tiger-nose”

Inside, the new Sportage’s driver-oriented cockpit features a simple and modern design with clean horizontal lines

Where the surfaces of the outgoing model were flatter, this one features more curves and creases, especially on the hood and door panels. The roofline is sloped and the spoiler lengthened to deliver a more aggressive stance. The new Sportage also has improved visibility, thanks to thinner A- and C-pillars, as well as side mirrors that have been mounted lower.

emphasizing a more spacious interior. The lateral design of the dashboard divides it into two clear zones. The upper “display” zone delivers information to occupants via the instrument panel and new color touchscreen. The lower half, or the “control” zone, features easily identifiable switchgear to operate the available dualzone climate system, audio and secondary controls. Similar to the touchscreen, the center console has been angled to face the driver. The all-new Sportage’s roomier, more luxurious cabin features an impressive level of craftsmanship, with high-quality, soft-touch materials and a range of technologies improving overall comfort, convenience, and connectivity. Updates to the drivetrain provide enhanced efficiency and performance, while changes to the suspension deliver better ride and handling. The 5-seater now has a sportier look than ever before, and now also comes with upgraded materials on the inside, as well as a host of new and improved tech and safety features that are sure to impress. Kia has done all they can to address those issues, and are promising a better quality of ride on the improved suspension. There are a number of available safety features added, including lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, bi-xenon high-intensity discharge headlights, and rear cross-traffic alert.

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016

AL: CAN YOU PLEASE HIGHLIGHT THE MARKETING STRATEGY FOR THE SETUP OF CG NEXT GEN IN THE NEPALESE MARKET? SS: Firstly, the average age of consumers is coming down in countries like Nepal and India. Like the Indian market, the Nepali market is also rapidly changing with new segments of consumers emerging. These new-gen consumers make different choices than the previous generation as they follow the latest trend and develop requirements according to it. Secondly, in the Nepalese market, young professionals are changing the retail space category. This growing segment of car buying professionals demands a greater level of satisfaction and expects personal touch in their car buying and ownership experience. These consumers also want to stand out from the crowd with world-class products. Hence, we had to take new initiatives to meet diversifying expectations from our customers. CG | NXT GEN is one of the major initiatives. CG | NXT GEN marks the first initiative by an automobile dealer in Nepal to go beyond selling cars and create a different level of retail experience for the customer. If you look at our products - mainly the Baleno, S-Cross and Ciaz, etc. they are designed for this segment. Through CG | NXT GEN, Suzuki will reach out to new segments of customers in Nepal. AL: THE VEHICLE OWNERSHIP COST IS VERY HIGH IN THE NEPALESE MARKET. SO, HOW DO YOU PLAN TO ATTRACT THIS SET OF EMERGING CONSUMERS FOR YOUR PREMIUM PRODUCTS? SS: Yes, the vehicle ownership cost is sky-high in the Nepalese market mainly due to the astronomical vehicle taxation structure. But, that’s something the government decides based on an overall economy management - how much each sector needs support and so on. However, we believe that we need more empowerment in terms of personal transportation which can come only from ownership of vehicles at lower tax. We accept and respect the government’s policies, so we have tried our best to keep a very good price for the customers despite the high taxes. In fact, CG Automobiles also offers very good schemes to the customers every once a while. It is all done so that the cost of the acquisition of the car comes down. AL: HOW DO YOU SEE THE GROWTH AND CHALLENGES FOR THE CG | NXT GEN BRAND IN THE NEPALESE MARKET? SS: From the last 5 years, the growth of the market has been about 13% CAGR. Every year it grows by 13%. But, if you see at the stats from the last three years (2013/14), the growth has been 37% in 13/14, 12% in 14/15 and 6% in 15/16. Even though we experienced sales slump due to the prolonged political instability last year, the market had a commendable growth rate. This year there has been an extremely good growth about 22% till May.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

We are very hopeful that the market will continue to grow, it’s a developing economy so it will continue to grow as well that’s why we have so much focus on the Nepalese market. AL: WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE VITARA BREZZA JUST AROUND THE CORNER, HOW IS THE COMPANY STRATEGIZING ITS SALES IN THE NEPALESE MARKET? SS: It’s not just about the Vitara Brezza. We’ve been the No.1 Automobile Company in Nepal for the past 30 years. However, in order to catch up with customer demand, we have to align the products themselves. So, we are introducing premium products. The idea is to tap into a new segment of buyers of an emerging economy. Similarly, the other strategy is to provide a premium customer experience in terms of better infrastructures and upgraded showrooms. Moreover,we will also provide our customers a premium customer experience through CG | NXT GEN showrooms. Additionally, we are also expanding our network across Nepal. From 23 outlets last year, we have expanded till 30 with further plans up to 37 outlets. Our goal is not only expansion but also building a long term relationship with our customers. Hence, CG|Motocorp has the largest service network in the country with 21 service centres. Similarly, we also have a full-fledged CRM division - the first for any automobile company in Nepal. They interact with the customers on a regular basis and take feedback and suggestion from the customers. These are the long term customer relationship strategies that will help us sustain our leader status in the market. AL: WHICH PRODUCT MIGHT BE THE BIGGEST COMPETITOR FOR THE UPCOMING VITARA BREZZA? SS: Nepal is quite a competitive market. It is also a dynamic one and changes quickly. Customer demand shifts quickly, depending upon market situations, economic situations, and fuel price. We’ve almost every major automobile manufacturer in the Nepalese market. The fact that we’ve been the No.1 car seller in Nepal for a very long time gives me great confidence regardless of the competition. For the upcoming Vitara Brezza, we have the Ford EcoSport and Hyundai Creta. While these two products are already in the market for quite a time, we are confident that the Brezza will be received positively. With the Vitara Brezza, we want to be No.1 in the compact SUV segment in the Nepali market. AL: OUR READERS WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE LAUNCH DATE OF THE UPCOMING VITARA BREZZA. SS: Actually the launch date hasn’t been finalized yet, but it should be launched shortly in the Nepali market. The Vitara Brezza exceeded our expectations resulting in enormous bookings, hence the delay in the Nepali market. We apologise to our customers for making them wait for a long time. We are confident that the Vitara Brezza will be well received by our customers.

THE FACT THAT WE’VE BEEN THE NO.1 CAR SELLER IN NEPAL FOR A VERY LONG TIME GIVES ME GREAT CONFIDENCE REGARDLESS OF THE COMPETITION. AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016 61

Jaguar, the British automaker, has epitomized the uncompromising blend of performance and beauty, making the Jaguar DNA recognizable throughout their rage of vehicles. A quintessentially British brand, the company has demonstrated their excellence in engineering and well crafted designs. And as part of the Tata Motors family, Jaguar has continued producing some of the best things that hit the tarmac on four wheels. Now, the Jaguar prowls the streets of Kathmandu; something we never thought we would have the pleasure of saying. Kishore Gears Pvt. Ltd., in a pleasantly surprising turn of events, has introduced the luxury vehicle brand to Nepal. This is a massive leap for the auto industry of Nepal and an exciting time for autoenthusiasts and the potential buyers of the moniker.

Now, the Jaguar prowls the streets of KATHMANDU; something we never thought we would have the pleasure of saying. Joining the roster for Nepal is the Jaguar XF and the XJL. The XJL is the flagship model for Jaguar and the largest saloon they have to offer. What Jaguar has done with the XJL is quite exquisite, both in terms of features/designs and the performance. The premium experience of being driven around in the beautifully designed extended executive sedan is a lavish and relaxing experience, but it provides an astonishingly heart throbbing driving experience. The joys of getting to drive it and actually see it on the roads of Nepal is a feeling we can’t quiet explain. But we have given it a shot in this review of what is hands down the most luxurious vehicle we have had the pleasure of test driving.

EXTERIOR

The Jaguar XJL is the Catherine Zeta Jones of cars; it’s just that we were lucky to get into this one. Its coupe like design with flowing lines give the XJL a striking profile that exhibits

a distinctive styling, setting it apart from almost anything on offer (except for a German juggernaut). Extending over a length of 5255mm, the Jaguar XJL imposes its dominance with its sheer size and dwarfs other sedans which are considered plenty long by Nepali standards. To put things into perspective, the XJL has a length advantage of 400mm over the Nissan Cefiro; that’s over a foot. Crowning the Jaguar is a chrome framed grille which gets meshed details and sits at an upright angle. The logo takes center stage. A pair of bi-xenon headlights with integrated LED indicator lights and DRLs functions as the piercing gaze of the Jaguar. These headlights produce a light with a color temperature closer to natural daylight so that objects can be better recognized which in turn helps increase comfort and safety during night driving. The ORVMs get integrated indicator lights. The roof gets heat-reflective glass which sweeps back and over the rear AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016 63

seats. It filters UV rays and floods the interior with natural light. The Jaguar prances on 19 inch Pirellis with double spoke towbar alloy wheels and, it goes without saying, they look spectacular. Rounding up the rear is the signature styled cat clawed rear LED taillight and brake-lights. Rear bumper gets chrome accents and dual tipped exhaust.

INTERIORS AND FEATURES

The L in the XJL stands for long-base which means there is over a meter of rear seat legroom in the cabin, and these extra inches add on to the pleasure of getting the limo experience. It is also fully loaded, and we say this reminiscing the moments we got our backs massaged in the rear passenger seats while watching some guys bicker about something on the Kantipur channel that was being played on the rear seat entertainment screens. It gets fully adjustable rear seats with heating, cooling and a massage functions, dual sunroofs, satellite navigation, 10.2 inch rear seat entertainment screens and Meridian audio systems (10.2-inch versus 8-inch), cornering headlamps and larger, 19-inch wheels. The XJL also features fold-out tray tables for rear seat passengers that are large and sturdy enough to hold a laptop. Interiors are exquisitely designed, including hand-crafted wood veneers and sumptuous semi-aniline leathers. The sporty looking dashboard wraps itself beautifully around the front seats. The full width panoramic roof filters UV rays and floods the interior with natural light making it feel airy, spacious and, thanks to effective tinting, very private. A 12.3 inch TFT screen displays the speed, fuel and temperature gauges and can be set to display the most relevant information, depending on the situation and set up. This multi-layered virtual display has been remodelled and combines a new design and graphical interface adding advanced functionality to make finding the right settings even easier. The Instrument Panel Display is fully integrated with the 8 inch Touch-screen to put all information behind the wheel or on the centre console. Both front seats feature fine-tuned electric adjustment and can be specified with five different massage programmes with three position user memory on the driver and front passenger seats. Both front and rear seats are heated. All seats feature a cooling function as well. The rear seat offers individual airline-style reclining seats complete with three massage programmes and memory. The Jaguar XJ is one of the safest cars around thanks to standard stability

and traction control, a pop-up bonnet to protect pedestrians, eight airbags and the latest security features. If you intend to carry lots of luggage, the XJ will impress as it has a large 520 liters boot.

PERFORMANCE

While you’d be perfectly comfortable lounging in the luxuries of the extravagant XJL, you would be employing the most satisfied employee as your driver. As luxurious as the Jaguar is, it has a wild side to it that makes it a driving wonder which combines supercar performance with luxury. Lightweight aluminum body and rigid body structure provides the XJL with a more dynamic driving experience. And the near perfect front to rear weight distribution gives it a more balanced performance. Equipped with an eight speed auto, it is a durable machine that is an exciting beast to drive. The Jaguar XJL’s V6 Turbocharged 3.0 litre 271bhp diesel engine offers 700Nm of torque which is capable of propelling you from 0-100km/h in 6.2. An involuntary smile will spread across your face as an aftermath. It is responsive to the throttle and remains punchy through all speeds. The XJ’s next generation Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) offers outstanding feedback, control and immediate power assistance. And because it is electrically driven, it’s only active on demand which saves fuel, if you really care about the mileage. This means that you can steer accurately, if a bit

66

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016

light at high speeds, and on the whole, the car feels a lot more balanced than its vast size would lead you to believe. And it is an extremely smart vehicle. The XJ’s Adaptive Dynamics system continually monitors the car up to 500 times a second, so whether you’re cornering, navigating uneven surfaces or accelerating you’re always performing optimally. In conjunction with the air suspension it constantly varies the damping to suit the conditions and makes sure the Jaguar remains flat and stable, improving control without hampering the ride comfort.

As luxurious as the Jaguar is, it has a wild side to it that makes it a driving wonder which combines supercar performance with luxury.

VERDICT

We are still trying to bring ourselves down from the excitement of finally getting a go at the Jaguar. It is by far, the most exciting product to come to the Nepalese auto industry in a very long time. Kishore Gears Pvt. Ltd. brought in the best of the best with the XJL and it lives up to every expectation. It sets the benchmark for any super business sedan in Nepal, and redefines the exceptional balance of beautiful design and mind boggling performance. Any other sedan pales in comparison to the Jaguar XJL (once again maybe except for a German Juggernaut). But, also according to expectations, anyone even thinking of buying it will have to shell out a lot of money. A lot. But like they say, if you have to ask how much it costs, you probably might not be buying it.

AUTOLIFE FEATURE

Riding in the rain. We love the idea of slinging a foot over a motorcycle and riding off into the horizon just as much as the next guy, but doing it when it’s raining cats and dogs is a different story altogether. Apart from the rare few, most of us would avoid riding our motorcycles in the rain. However, sometimes you set out on a clear day and suddenly get caught off guard by the pouring rain. Also, riding in the rain at times can be necessary, whether you like it or not. So when the monsoon sets in, it’s important to be prepared to face all these problems and a few unexpected ones too.

Photos used for illustration purpose Photos: Royal Enfield Tour of Nepal 2014

FIRST OF ALL MAKE SURE THAT YOUR BIKE IS IN THE RIGHT CONDITION TO HANDLE THE RAIN: • TYRES: Tires are a standout amongst the most essential things that keep your bike moving and keep it up right, yet the tires are typically overlooked. Always keep in mind that it is a not a wise idea to use slick (tires with insignificant thread pattern) or worn out tires in the wet conditions, as it won’t have the capacity to provide you with sufficient grip in the wet conditions. It’s suggested that your tire ought to have no less than 3-4mm deep thread pattern so it can grip well in the wet conditions. If you have some spare cash lying around, you could purchase a set of wet (tires with a lot of notches/string design) for the

70

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016

monsoon season, it might be well worth the investment. • BRAKES: If your bike comes fitted with disc brakes make sure to check your brake pads as it prone to excessive wear in the rain. When you need to brake, apply more rear brake than normal and pump them so that you do not start aquaplaning. If your front wheel starts sliding you’re done for, but if your rear wheel slides you can easily correct it. Brake gently and give yourself more space between you and the vehicle in front of you. • CHAIN: Ideally, a full chain cover protects the chain adequately, but since most of the modern bikes don’t come equipped with the full chain cover the chain tends to get a lot of the rain; after it dries this poses the risk of rusting. It is necessary that facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016 71

you clean and lubricate the chain at least once a week to keep it in good condition and prevent it from rusting. • WIRING: Ensure that none of the wirings of your bike are open to the downpour water. As the water can hamper the circuits and can cause the electronic parts of your bike to malfunction. • SERVICING: The most important of all is the timely servicing of your bike. Having your bike stalled in the rain and you getting stuck up is something you would never want, especially so if it’s raining like hell. • COVER YOUR BIKE: If your daily parking area does not have a shed, do cover your bike with a proper sized cover so that its components are not exposed to water. Never forget to wash your bike after a ride in a heavy shower, the dirt on the grounds can bring about corrosion in the bike, so it is ideal to keep it clean and grease up all the parts after the wash so it can work easily and effectively. Always park your bike in a shaded area that will shield it from the downpour. If you can’t find shelter, you can utilize a bike spread with the right length, this is imperative in light of the fact that the corrosive downpour can harm your bikes paint and cause it to lose its shine.

72

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016

AFTER PREPARING OUR BIKE FOR THE RAIN WE OURSELVES MUST BE READY AS WELL POINTERS TO ALWAYS REMEMBER DURING THE MONSOON SEASON ARE:

• Always ride with your headlights turned on! The downpour decreases the vision so in when you ride with your lights on it will help other riders/drivers see that you are coming. • Remember that the tyres don’t grip as well as in the dry terrain, so the stopping distance will be more than usual of what it was in the dry conditions so start braking early. • Don’t jerk the throttle suddenly or grab the brake abruptly as it will upset the balance of the bike and will cause the tyres to slide which might cause you to crash. • Avoid pot holes filled with water as you cannot predict the depth of it. • Keep distance between you and other bikes/cars because: 1) you never know when the person is going to stop so it’s better to keep a safe distance. 2) some car’s/bike’s rear tyres spray us with the rain collected in the roads so keeping distance will help avoid that. • When lightning starts up, stop riding. Unless you wouldn’t mind a lightning bolt coursing through your body. Head for cover and don’t stop below a tree.

NOW THAT YOU’RE PREPARED, HERE ARE SOME MONSOONRIDING TIPS:

These are some basic pointers that you should always keep in mind while riding in the rain. Keep dry, and stay safe.

• Always! Carry a raincoat or a waterproof jacket at the least because you can never predict the weather. So it is a good idea to always be prepared. • If your raincoat is big enough to protect your bag then its fine otherwise waterproof covers are available to protect your bag and its contents from getting wet. • While riding in the rain the visor tends to fog when its closed, which is very risky because it limits our vision and if you ride with the visor open the rain drops won’t let you open your eyes properly which is dangerous again, so it is highly recommended that you use a visor with anti-fog coating on it. • You can purchase waterproof shoe spread which shields your shoes from the downpour water.

• Take it easy! Never rush when riding in the rain.

A WINNING

PACKAGE Benelli TNT25

Words & Photos : Autolife Team

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016

After establishing its footprint in nearly 30 countries like Italy, Germany, France, China, UK, USA, Australia, Spain and India to name a few, Benelli , one of the oldest Italian manufacturers, joined hands with KTM International Trading Pvt. Ltd this April and introduced some of the world’s best designed and performing superbikes to one of the most exciting markets in the Indian sub-continent. A perfect package of performance, comfort and visual appeal, Benelli bikes have every element that makes it an irresistible buy for the motor biking enthusiast. After having showcased the hotly-popular TNT300 last year, the company this year introduced a range of some of the most distinctly Italian flavored bikes seen in Nepal to date, including the in-line, four-cylinder 600cc TNT 600i, , the TNT25 – the smallest offering of the TNT series , and a 150cc maxi scooter – the Zenzero 150. After having received a phenomenal response for the TNT 300 in the Nepalese market, we were certain that the smallest of the TNT offerings from Benelli’s stable would also be received with great enthusiasm by motor biking aficionados in the country. Hence, we decided to take the bike for a short spin inside the capital.

TNT25’s contemporary yet distinctive design language makes the motorcycle look unique on the road. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

STYLING

The Benelli TNT 25 looks very similar to the TNT300. The Benelli TNT25’s contemporary yet distinctive design language makes the motorcycle look unique on the road. The design is minimalistic in nature with flat handlebars, a muscular fuel tank that has a black tank pad/lining running all the way from the beginning of the tank to the edge of the rider seat, racy decals, exposed trellis frame and a neatly incorporated side-mounted matte black exhaust. The multi-reflector headlamp with a tiny wind screen on top visually enhances the front profile. Its masculine stance is accentuated further with smooth flowing body lines and sporty styling. An informative instrumentation panel sits atop the headlight. The instrumentation panel houses a digital cum analogue console which provides all the necessary information like the speedometer, tachometer, trip meters, digital fuel gauge and a digital clock. The switchgears are of good quality, the mirrors are clear and the 17-litre fuel capacity is expected to provide an adequate kilometer range. The front 41mm inverted forks are finished in silver, holding the beefy Metzeler rubbers. The rear gets LED indicators and an LED tail light which adds an Italian flavor to the design. Overall, the styling acquaints itself with pure Italian flamboyance and the rich heritage that Benelli bikes are renowned for.

PERFORMANCE

Powering the TNT 25 is a liquid cooled single cylinder, 4-stroke DOHC engine developing 28.16 Bhp at 9800 rpm and 21.61 Nm torque at 8000 rpm. This is the only Benelli bike in Nepal to use a single-cylinder motor. Power is sent to the rear wheel via a 6-speed transmission. Twist the throttle hard, and you’ll get some quick acceleration. The responsive engine propels the bike to move effortlessly from standstill to cruising sprints in no time. However, it’s the vibration that’s a slight setback, the more you rev it, the more buzz you feel. Just like other Benelli bikes, the power delivery is linear with a good grunt throughout the rev range. The single-cylinder’s linear power delivery and crisp throttle response make it very manoeuvrable and

76

AUTOLIFE JUNE 2016

rider-friendly. The TNT 25’s stubby exhaust does play its part to keep with the TNT300’s aural pleasure. There is a lot of bass to that exhaust note.

RIDE & HANDLING

The TNT 25 is an agile performer. You can easily flick the bike into turns and twists without being disappointed. It is sufficiently slim and light (at 159kg) to make it a nimble performer in Nepalese road conditions. Like most of its siblings, the TNT 25 is tightly wrapped in a Trellis frame with upside down forks upfront and a single hydraulic mono shock at the rear. Although the suspension setup is stiff, the ride isn’t that uncomfortable. The flat handle bar which is coupled with rear-set foot gives the rider a forward-leaning position while the well -padded plush seats provide a comfortable riding stance and ergonomics give it a big bike feel. The sporty yet supremely comfortable riding ergonomics makes the TNT 25 an inimitable modern street bike. The supple ride also helps make the TNT 25 comfortable and the strong Trellis frame further enhances the handling capabilities. The suspension setup along with the meaty Metzeler rubbers does soak up our road with utmost confidence. The well-padded seats provide a comfortable seating Braking duties are taken care by

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

a 280-mm petal disc upfront with a 4 piston calliper and a 240-mm single disc with a double piston caliper. ABS is missing though. The 17” alloy wheels finish off the sporty look and add to the impressive handling. All in all, the TNT25 blends 28.16 bhp performance with fine handling and a reasonable practicality. Its versatility is evident from the fact that it’s fun to ride not only on daily basis but even when you head for the winding roads on weekends.

VERDICT

Styled like its big brother range, the Benelli TNT 25 is the perfect entry level motorcycle, delivering excellent fuel economy, agile performance and easy to ride character. The TNT 25 stands out through its Italian flair, ergonomic perfection and ultimately the exceptional performance it offers. The TNT 25’s brew of performance and value is hard to beat in the Nepalese market as it sets the bar for budget performance very high, offering more power than its competition at a tempting price. In fact, it might be the most exciting thing in the quarter-liter market today. A robust ride with even impressive specifications at this price point is sure to change the dynamics of quarter-litre bikes in the Nepalese motorcycle market. Chat Conversation End
