Motorcycling might just be a mode of transportation for some people, but there are many riders who turn to their machines for much more. There is a therapeutic property that you can’t really find anywhere else than riding, which is why riders develop such a strong bond with their motorcycles. And it doesn’t matter what you ride. You don’t need a multi millionrupee crotch rocket with a fancy badge to become a rider. It’s the passion that drives you to get onto your machine and ride it just because it puts a smile on your face. Motorcycles have played a major role in making us the crazed auto fanatics that we are, and with this issue we pay tribute to the two wheelers that put the extra zest into our lives; and on the frontline is the new Honda CRF 250L. Boasting of arguably the strongest dual-purpose heritage amongst the lot, the CRF was built to conquer the streets and everywhere else. With a legacy to uphold, the CRF 250L sets out to the proving grounds with us this month. Also on the list is the Kawasaki Versys, a 650cc adventure touring motorcycle that epitomizes the notion of chasing the horizon on a motorcycle. Robust and raring to go, the review of the big gun is worth the read. Lastly, there is the Aprilia SR 150, a scooter that promises to get you around town and then some. The scooter game might never be the same again. It’s all about the two wheelers this month, something we love with a burning passion. There is an energy in motorcycles that is absolutely incomparable to anything else, and we hope you share our opinion on this. In which case, you will pretty much enjoy this issue very much. Until next time. Cheers.

AUTOLIFE FEBRUARY 2017

The LEGO Technic BMW R 1200 GS Adventure is not just a fun model kit consisting of 603 parts, it is also the result of the successful and creative collaboration between BMW Motorrad and LEGO Technic. The idea of developing a detailed LEGO Technic reproduction of the best-selling model BMW R 1200 GS Adventure quickly grew into something more. The design teams of the two companies decided to join forces to create an alternative model as is commonly provided with LEGO Technic 2-in-1 kits. So the parts of the LEGO Technic BMW R 1200 GS Adventure can also be used to build the Hover Ride Design Concept. Furthermore, the BMW Junior Company – an innovative BMW Group training unit – turned the Hover Ride included in the set into an elaborately produced full-size replica. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

HIMALAYAN ROADIES WHY ONLY THE TOUGHEST WILL SURVIVE

M

MTV Roadies has probably been the most enjoyable reality show on TV in the recent years. Honestly, we all loved watching the bald twins bash the poor contestants in the auditions and further roast them in the actual show. And through all the mud, rain, blood and cursings, what we have come to learn is that to survive, one needs to have the dexterity, and the willingness to stoop down, only to rise up and soar through the ashes. With that being said, are we up for it? As a new venture, the Roadies franchise is being brought by Himalaya Television to test the Nepalese people as the Himalaya Roadies. To quote them, “It is the ultimate test of fortitude and has become the judging parameter between what is more relevant – Experience vs. Potential and Faith vs. Hope.” All we can do is heave a deep sigh because that sounds intensive! Then again, when the prize is Rs.20 Lakhs (in Nepalese bling-bling) and a handsome Bajaj Avenger, such a challenge is bound to come. The reality show/competition/hell will be judged by our homegrown ring masters: Deeya Maskey, the bold and beautiful actress who has creditable movies under her name; Aasis Rana (Laure), who will slap you with his Bachelor’s degree if you misbehave; and Raymon Das Shrestha, a man who probably needs no introduction for he is essentially The Man in media and movies. The trio are sure to make the land of mountains a place hotter than hell. Pain is free. So is the registration form. The registrations forms will be made available at Bajaj showrooms, Ncell outlets and Nepal SBI Bank branches all over Nepal. Or you can simply go on to himalaya.tv and fill the online form. You just need to hold a Nepalese citizenship, be above the age of 18, able to audition in Pokhara, Butwal, Dharan, Kathmandu and Chitwan, have a strong determination and a death wish. Enter at your own risk. The audition dates are 1st March for Pokhara, 4th March for Butwal, 6th March for Chitwan, 9th March for Dharan, and 13th to 14th March for Kathmandu.

LEXUS 350 F SPORT

NEVER HAS LUXURY BEEN THIS EXPRESSIVE

I

If you are an ardent automobile enthusiast in the Capital, the chances are high that you may have seen an alluring yet aggressively sculpted Lexus 350 F SPORT cruising down the roads of the Capital. With a commanding and provocative design, staying under the radar is pretty much impossible for the RX 350 F SPORT in Kathmandu. One glance at the RX 350 F SPORT, and it’s evident that Lexus’ futuristic DNA has been artfully incorporated into the details of the crossover.

FACT As the best-selling model in the brand’s 26year history—with global sales of more than 2.1 million units—the RX represents three out of ten vehicles ever sold by Lexus. Since the model’s launch in 1998, the Lexus RX has proved immensely popular with those needing the flexibility of a sport-utility vehicle combined with the driving comfort of a luxury sedan, all wrapped in an attractive, elegant package.

Lexus vehicles designated with the F SPORT badge are equipped with a number of special visual and performance features that set them apart from other versions. In the RX’s case, the spindle grille and lower center piece of the rear bumper incorporate an “F” mesh design, instantly giving the vehicle a sportier flair. New 20-inch alloy wheels with graphite finish, exclusive to the F SPORT, also help give the RX a commanding presence. Inside, the driver is treated to a custom F SPORT instrument cluster with a TFT Multi Information Display (MID) as well as a sport steering wheel, featuring perforated leather trim, an F SPORT emblem, and paddle shifters. Exclusive colors and trim pieces are also part of F SPORT.

ENTERTAINMENT: Convenience meets clarity with exclusively available Mark Levinson® Audio* and a versatile dual-screen Rear-Seat Entertainment System.*

SOPHISTICATED EXTERIOR: The RX with all-new sheet metal makes a powerful visual statement at first glance. A completely new front end is highlighted by an emboldened spindle grille, an aggressive front bumper and available triple L-shaped LED headlamps. Together with the all-new LED fog lamps and LED daytime running lights, the RX has a more sophisticated and advanced look. Muscular front fender flares add to the vehicle’s sporty attitude. When seen from the side, the sharp character line that runs from the front fenders to the rear end, together with a flowing roofline, give the RX a dynamic profile. A truly distinctive styling cue is the blacked-out C-pillars, which provide the illusion of a floating roofline never before seen on a Lexus product. Also, newly available 20-in. aluminum wheels with larger tires improve the vehicle stance and proportions. The new RX’s rear appearance has been sharpened, now exuding a sense of chiseled, rock-solid stability with the design highlighted by LED L-shaped taillights that wrap around the sides of the vehicle, creating a wider, more authoritative presence when illuminated. When lit, a brilliant glow spans laterally from the body to the back door, a Lexus-first. Integrated dual exhaust pipes have facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

been added to the gas model for a more premium appearance. AGGRESSIVE LUXURY: Inside, RX’s new luxurious cabin with elegant, high-quality trim exudes warmth and class. Specially finished Yamaha lasercut ornamentation is available for those who appreciate an additional dimension of interior refinement. An available color heads-up display (HUD) projects pertinent vehicle information to the driver’s windshield, while the information display area, featuring an available 12.3-in. monitor with full-screen map, is situated atop the center stack. The shift lever, complete with leather boot, has been positioned away from the front of the instrument panel to optimize operability and create more space for the driver. Rear-seat occupants are treated to more leg and knee space. The RX now offers heated outboard rear seats and a 60/40 power folding second row to enhance comfort and convenience. A newly available retractable power panorama moon roof enhances the RX cabin’s spaciousness and provides occupants with a refreshing openair experience. The available rear seat entertainment system now includes 11.6-in. dual screens affixed to the back of the front headrests.

F SPORT PERFORMANCE AND STYLING: Race-inspired details meet razor-sharp style with the RX F SPORT. The RX F SPORT’s performance on the road has been enhanced by an active stabilizer system whose cutting-edge technology helps keep the vehicle’s body amazingly flat through corners. The aforementioned AVS, which also helps keep the vehicle planted to driving surfaces through turns, is standard on RX F SPORT. OWNER’S REVIEW

I did not own a car before. I would just ride bikes. I wanted to purchase a car during the festival time. I first went to the Renault Kwid as I had liked it when I saw it online. But when I saw it in real-life, it didn’t appeal to me. So I went around and came to Tata. There, there were various models like the Indica, Zest and Tiago, but it was the Bolt that really caught my eye for being bigger than the others. After test driving it, I really saw myself being happy in it and I must say that I am. The interiors are very good and the back seat is really spacious in comparison to other cars. However, when I took it on a trip to Melamchi, the ride was a bit bumpy. The car touches the road while driving off-road. Then again, I can’t really blame the car because our roads are like that only. City roads are a breeze though. The recommended servicing time is after 6 months or 5000km. I don’t drive around very much however, so I can’t really speak on it. It hasn’t really been much since I got the car. Regardless, I would certainly recommend this over any other to whoever is looking to buy a car. I would say that the mileage, the looks and the performance is really good and the affordable price point is the cherry on top.

THE SLEEK SPORT-BIKE INSPIRED DESIGN REFLECTS A DISTINCTIVE YET FUNCTIONAL KAWASAKI IDENTITY

Traversing the lands in search of new places is what passionate motorcyclists live for and motorcycles equipped to do just that are gaining popularity. Having the looks and utility of a capable off-roader and the balance and handling of a street motorcycle, adventure motorcycles are motorcycles that make sense to the riders who love to travel. Adventure motorcycles, on paper, can do a little bit of both street and dirt bikes. Whether it’s threading through dirt trails or carving corners on the asphalt. It’s the type of machine that will get you to places that other machines cannot.

T

Entering the proving grounds to live up to such claims is the Kawasaki Versys 650 ABS. The Versys is one of those machines that exceeds the sum of its parts. Its name, derived from “vertex” (Latin for pinnacle, summit, top) and “system,” hints at Kawasaki’s goal of offering a truly superior platform that maximizes fun in any genre of street conditions.

STYLING

Visually, the Kawasaki Versys 650 looks identical to its elder sibling – the Versys 1000. The sleek sport-bike inspired design reflects a distinctive yet functional Kawasaki identity offering a balance of style, wind protection, aerodynamics and airflow management. The front cowl features a horizontally split design headlamps with a large adjustable 60mm windscreen that reinforces the compact and sporty image of the Versys 650. The larger windscreen with a 60 mm range can be adjusted without tools, allowing riders to tailor their wind and weather protection. Mirrors are big and clear and the new ‘fat’ bars are perfectly placed to give you a nice feeling of control. Behind that windscreen is a semi-digital instrument console with analogue tachometer. The console displays all the necessary diagnostics such as speed, fuel gauge, two trip facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

for an exhilarating ride experience. The 649cc parallel-twin engine makes 68 bhp at 8,500 rpm and peak torque of 64 Nm at 7,000 rpm. This is essentially the same engine as used by the Kawasaki 650 Ninja ABS sport bike, but it is tuned for a more grunty delivery.

The Versys 650 is built around a steel, double-pipe diamond frame finished off by a stylish boomerang shaped swingarm. The fuel tank is identical to the Versys 1000. Functional aspects outweigh the rear styling of the Versys 650. The rear end is functionally designed with mounting points for hard panniers and luggage bags. Overall fit-finish and attention-to-detail are excellent on the Versys 650.

Thumb the starter, twist the throttle and the engine kicks off with an intoxicating burst of physical and aural sensation. Push it further and the parallel-twin engine quickly takes you to double-digit speeds before you even shift into fourth gear. Although the six-speed gearbox exhibits a ‘thunk’ note when changing up or down through the gears, the gearshifts are precise.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE

The compact parallel-twin engine of the Versys 650 ABS is tuned to deliver strong, quick-revving power, especially in the low to mid-range

AUTOLIFE FEBRUARY 2017

Paired with Digital Fuel Injection, the powerful engine delivers a smooth, responsive performance with strong mid-range power making it a willing accomplice on our roads. The torquey twin delivers a deep ribbon of power in the low and mid-range.

ERGONOMICS AND HANDLING

One of the standout attributes of the 2016 Kawasaki Versys 650 ABS motorcycle is its upright riding position, which is ideal for commuting, back-road runs and weekend jaunts. This is Kawasaki’s recipe for a fun open-road adventure. For strong performance from city traffic to winding back roads, the Versys 650 ABS delivers with nimble handling, compact stature and power. With its long-travel suspension and sporty 17-inch wheels, the Versys 650 ABS offers an incredible ride quality. The 5.9-inchtravel Showa fork and 5.7-inch-travel KYB shock deliver generous suspension travel to provide sporty handling and all-day comfort. Both front and rear suspension can be adjusted as per the rider’s preference. It soaks up bumps with ease, and helps give riders more assurance on a variety of road conditions. This, coupled with a ground clearance of 170mm, yields the benefits of both off-road-style and sport-bike suspension, offering excellent road handling in a wide range of riding conditions. Although the kerb weight stands at 216 kg, the bike feels much lighter. The chassis feels more planted, bolstering rider confidence through flowing curves. Its narrow frame allows the Versys 650 ABS motorcycle to be nimbler than many of its bulky competition and provides excellent rider feedback. The compact engine and slim frame result in a design that is narrow at the knees and feet. Re-positioned footpegs offer a more relaxed position, making it easier for riders to spend more time on the saddle. Braking duties are handled by dual semifloating 300mm petal discs upfront and single 250mm petal discs at the rear. The brakes provide plenty of bite for this all rounder, offering good bite and response. The crisp, linear ABS brake system includes Nissin block-style calipers to help enhance overall braking power.

VERDICT

No matter what you ride, all Kawasaki motorcycles have one thing in common: they allow you to “Let the good times roll”. And the same is with the Versys 650 ABS. For strong performance from city traffic to winding back roads, the Versys 650 ABS delivers with nimble handling, compact stature and power. If you’re looking for the ultimate combination of fun and performance on all types of terrains, nothing packs more versatile practicality than the Versys 650 ABS. It is an adaptable motorcycle that will have you grinning in your helmet. It can be a top choice as the go-to bike for riding enthusiasts in need of a fun, dependable and a versatile machine. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

The Fiat Punto Pure is my first car and I chose it because it was very practical for my daily use. It is an added bonus that it is very comfortable. The interior of Punto Pure is very attractive. The feel is nice, rich and smooth to the touch. The leg space is plenty for the passenger at the back and the front seats are the most comfortable I’ve ever been on. The high ground clearance makes the bumpy roads here in Kathmandu almost nonexistent. I have taken the car for long drives as well and it is very comfortable to ride on the highways as well. All in all, it ticks all the points I look for in a car. It’s really a bargain to get a premium product at an affordable price point.

WORDS & PHOTOS : AL TEAM

AUTOLIFE FEBRUARY 2017

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Flip through the motorcycle history books of Nepal and you’ll find that the Honda name is etched into the pages in bright bold fonts and underlined twice. There was a time when motorcycles were simply referred to as Hondas and the Japanese manufacturers became synonymous with the machines that moved souls. While the likes of the CG 125, CM 200 and the occasional CBs ran rampant on the streets, a different breed gained a fan following with the XL Series. Running on knobby tires and longer suspension, these lightweight machines helped Honda expand from the street bikes and reign supreme in the dual sport subdivision.

F

Better recognized as dirt bikes or trail (mispronounced trial) bikes the XR and XL prospered in the Nepalese market. Elsewhere in the world the 2-stroke dirt slingers came on the rise in the form of CRs. Focused more towards the motocross world, the CRs, were absolute beasts on the track. Furthermore, Honda went on to make the monumental dirt bike CR Elsinore in 1974.

“ THE 2017 CRF250L RETAINS ITS MOTOCROSS HERITAGE BOASTING A TALL STANCE AND SLEEK DESIGN WITH A CLEAN SHAPE AND SHARP LINES

In the forefront of the modern dual sport segment though is the CRF. The successor to the XR, the CRFs are full sized motocross bikes that are equipped with liquid-cooled, single-cylinder fourstroke engines. Built to tackle off-road terrains and still be rideable on the tarmac, the CRF has upheld the legacy set by the XL and XR. Back in 2013, we test rode the CRF 250L; 4 years later, we’re back with the new generation. Here is what the 2017 CRF has to offer.

STYLING AND FEATURES The 2017 CRF250L retains its motocross heritage boasting a tall stance and sleek design with a clean shape and sharp lines. The bodywork and graphics have received killer updates. Inspired by the CRF450R, the new CRF250L comes in one color: Red; and boy does it look stunning.

However, two strokes weren’t Honda’s strongest suit. They were better known for making reliable four strokes that you could leave in the garage for a year and still start it with a single kick. They exhibited their ability to make great four stroke off-road machines with the XLs and XRs, which have become an integral part of motorcycle culture in Nepal especially amongst dual purpose motorcycles. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE FEBRUARY 2017 51

GOOD NEWS FOR THE AVERAGE NEPALI RIDER; SEAT HEIGHT HAS BEEN SHAVED DOWN 0.3 INCHES TO 34.4 INCHES

Thanks to its aggressive graphics with minimalistic MX design the CRF gets noticed. The slim fuel tank holds 7.8L, and combined with the comfortable, flat seat offers maximum control and choice of riding position. Honda has kept the instrument cluster nice and sleek, with a digital console that displays the fuel meter, along with a built in clock with twin trip functions. Two buttons, the select and set, lets you toggle through the fairly simple functions. In lieu with the other tell tale lights on the instrument console. Good news for the average Nepali rider; seat height has been shaved down 0.3 inches to 34.4 inches. It might not be much but for many riders, every 0.3inch counts. But the ground clearance remains the same at 10 inches. Up front, a two-piston caliper works a 256mm

AUTOLIFE FEBRUARY 2017

floating wave-style disc. Two channel ABS is fitted as standard and gives the rider the option to switch it off for the rear caliper. A small detail – but a useful one off-road – is that the gear lever now features a folding tip. Suspension duties are undertaken by a 43mm Showa inverted fork up front and a ProLink rear suspension with the Showa shock absorber is a single tube design with 40mm diameter cylinder. Equipped with knobby tyres, the slim frame of the CRF looks ready to tackle the city traffic and the less traveled terrains. One tiny complaint though: they have switched placements between the horn and indicator switch which takes some getting used to.

PERFORMANCE For the majority of Nepali riders who are used to riding street motorcycles on a daily basis, straddling the CRF will be a very welcome change. In true dual-purpose style you get facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

a tall riding stance with an amazing vantage point that lets you scour over traffic or the trail ahead. The ergonomics are very well set with wide handlebars and a slim narrow seat that allows you to grip the bike and move forward or back depending on how you want to move your weight once you’re standing up on the pegs. Now remember, this is a machine that’s ready to take on exciting off-road challenges without giving up street-riding accommodations. So on the tarmac it has things well covered. It is extremely filckable through traffic and is right at home scurrying through what remains of our roads. The compact and sophisticated liquid-cooled DOHC 249cc single-cylinder four-stroke powerplant is quite rev happy and will spin excellently to provide good performance on the streets. While the engine will gladly rev to no end, you won’t be greeted with gnarly AUTOLIFE FEBRUARY 2017 53

mechanical engine notes that the older dirt bikes were known for. Instead, you get a more refined din from the engine. And it provides plenty of power when you call upon it. Revised PGM-FI feeds fuel/ air mixture through a 38mm throttle body (up from 36mm) and draws air from the airbox via a direct connecting tube. What this does is it improves throttle response and increases power in the lower and midranges. Considering its ability to maneuver at close quarters in traffic while making light work of the obliterated asphalt, it isn’t difficult to see yourself riding the CRF 250L on a daily basis within the city. But doing just that would be injustice. Although it is a capable street machine, you’re not going to get the best of it unless you get it off the tarmac. The 250cc mill produces smooth and consistent torque at low rpm to aid off-road work and that is where the CRF really comes into its element. Harking back to its motocross genes the relatively calm and composed demeanor on the streets morphs into a frantic menace on the dirt. Nimble, agile and aggressive, the experience of exploring unchartered terrains is absolutely invigorating on the CRF 250L. Thanks to its knobby tires and sure footedness, it inspires the confidence you

need to really push it to its limits. Point it at almost any terrain and it does its thing. Whether its rocky climbs, loose gravel, technical declines or nasty slush, the CRF 250L does not hesitate. Switch off the ABS, let the tail loose, and you have the world at your hands.

VERDICT The idea of purchasing a dual sport motorcycle for Nepal is making more and more sense every passing day. Not only have our roads been reduced to complete rubble, motorcycling has become more than just a mode of transportation for many. So apart from tackling the dirt terrain inside the city roads, dual-purpose motorcycles are aptly built to explore terrains that are unimaginable for other motorcycles. And on the forefront of the dual purpose race is Honda, it always has been. The solid heritage is an undeniable factor in the Japanese manufacturers’ success in the segment, and the CRF upholds the legacy very well. However, it will probably sear a hole in your wallet since its priced at a whopping Rs.10,25,000. But they say you can’t really put a price on quality; along with reliability and resale value, which Honda has exhibited through the years.

54

WHETHER ITS ROCKY CLIMBS, LOOSE GRAVEL, TECHNICAL CLIMBS OR NASTY SLUSH, THE CRF 250L DOES NOT HESITATE.

RIDING TIPS

AUTOLIFE FEBRUARY 2017

W

While there are plenty of die-hard fans of crotch rockets, the wanderers and explorers of the motorcycling world are also on the rise. Dual sport machines will take you places and get you experiences that normal street bikes just can’t offer. Carving corners and racing straights has its share of fun, but exploring unchartered territory quenches the wanderlust that many have. Adventure is the name of the game here. However, many riders are completely new to the sport and may not know some of the tricks of the trade. Below is a list of suggestions and ideas that will make your next dual sport adventure more enjoyable.

• KEEP A SMALL FUNCTIONAL FIRST AID KIT. You don’t know what you might need when you’re out on the road, so it’s always better to be safe than sorry. • WEAR PROPER GEAR. You’re venturing out to places that aren’t exactly motorcycle friendly, so you need to protect yourself properly. Invest in a good helmet, gloves, boots, and armored riding jacket. Protective kneepads are also a good idea. • LEARN HOW TO FIX A FLAT, and carry the required tools that you will need to get the job done. Carry a spare tube too. • CARRY MORE TOOLS THAN YOU THINK YOU’LL NEED. What tools to take you ask? When you work on your bike at home, ONLY use the tools in your toolkit. You will eventually acquire the proper amount of tools that you may need on the trail. Murphy’s Law: if you have it, you won’t need it. • INSTALL HANDGUARDS. This will protect you against broken levers in case of a fall, and will also protect your hands from tree branches and grasses if you plan to carve your way out of a forest. • BRING MATCHES, AND STORE THEM IN A ZIPLOC BAG.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

• ALWAYS CARRY A MAP. In fact, use photocopies so that you can save the original and fold the copy as badly as you want.

• CARRY A SPARE THROTTLE CABLE. In a pinch, you can shift without a clutch, but you need a throttle cable.

• DON’T RIDE BY YOURSELF. Your worst riding buddy will suddenly become your best friend when you break down in the middle of nowhere. If you do go ride by yourself, let someone know where you’re riding before you leave.

• ON DUSTY RIDES, SQUIRT A SMALL AMOUNT OF BABY OIL ON YOUR GOGGLE FOAM. This will aid in keeping dust out of the inside of your goggles

• CARRY A CAMERA. You’re going to be going places that provide you with scenic vistas unattainable to most other bikers. Save the memories. • BRING SOME EXTRA FOOD AND WATER. A bite of a Snickers bar when you’re starving and a sip of water to quench the thirst is a life saver when there is no shop around. • LUBE ANYTHING THAT MOVES. Use light oil like WD-40 to lube important moving points after you wash your bike. Items to oil are kick-starter pivots, folding footpegs, bar levers, shift levers, brake pedal, side stand, etc. • OIL THOSE CABLES. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to pull in the clutch.

• USE SUNSCREEN ON YOUR FACE. Wind and sun can make your face as dry as a lizard’s belly. Don’t forget Chapstick on your lips. • CARRY PLASTIC ZIP-TIES. Smaller zip-ties have a million uses. Six or seven large heavy-duty zipties (spaced around the wheel) work well for wrapping the rim and tire if you get a flat that is un-repairable. This will prevent the tire from coming off the rim. If you have no tube (or the one you have stopped working), pack up the inside of the tire with as many sticks and twigs as you can cram in. This will give you a virtual bib-mouse insert to get you home. • FILL YOUR BRAKE FLUID MASTER CYLINDER TO THE TOP OF THE RESERVOIR, leaving no air. This way you will not have air in your brake line if you tip your bike upside-down in a crash.

• CARRY SPARE ITEMS IN YOUR TOOL KIT like various nuts, bolts and a spare spark plug.

MOTORCYCLE HAND SIGNALS Understanding that motorcycling is a serious activity is important not only for your own safety but also detrimental in changing the general mentality that the society has towards motorcyclists. If you’re still taking it lightly and doing stupid immature acts to further propagate the stereotype, you are bringing down the entire community. One of the things you can do to better yourself as a rider is acquire the right knowledge about different aspects of motorcycle riding. With that in mind, here are a few hand gestures that motorcyclists use to communicate with each other or other people on the roads.

U

If you drive any other type of automobile, it’s still important to know some of these motorcycle hand signals. If you’re driving behind a motorcyclist without working lights, you should know if they’re signaling a left or right turn . Even signals like “hazard in roadway,” “turn signal on,” and “cops ahead” can really be helpful.

THE RACE-INSPIRED BODYWORK LOOKS LIKE IT WOULD BE MORE AT HOME ON HIGHWAYS THAN THE LOCAL STREETS.

Distinct yet sporty? Check. Powerful yet stylish? Check. Faster than the competition? Check. When most companies were coming up with economy-minded commuters, Aprilia rolled up its sleeves to introduce something new that would redefine the scooter segment. Meet the Aprilia SR 150 – a scooter that stays true to Aprilia’s supersports DNA and arguably the most stylish ‘sports’ scooter in the cluttered Nepalese market. Aprilia says the SR150 is designed for riders looking for the attitude of a sports bike and the convenience of an automatic scooter. So, does the Aprilia SR 150 offer the best of both worlds? We find out here

D

STYLING

The SR150 shares a family resemblance to its SR siblings. It is an impressive looking scooter with a design dominated by sharp lines, the type that really stands out from the competition. The aggressive, aerodynamic and compact design which Aprilia calls ‘Racer-Bike Styling’ has been inspired by that of the Italian manufacturer’s big bikes. The race-inspired bodywork looks like it would be more at home on highways than the local streets. The beaky front apron gets a double-barrel headlight unit and a distinct, sporty handlebar with integrated turn indicator lights. The instrumentation console is a rather simple affair with a twin pod analogue unit with the speedometer, fuel gauge, odometer and indicators. The front storage compartment seen on most scooters has been removed which allows for a much roomier seating position even for taller riders. The scooter, however, has a bag hook that can be folded away when not in use under the head unit. If you are still short on space for your belongings, the SR150 also has an ample under seat storage with a built-in USB charger. On the rear end, the SR150 gets a split pillion grab handles, 14-inch wheels with wider sports street tyres and sporty tail lamps.

ENGINE

The SR150 borrows the same 154.8 cc engine from the Vespa with similar output. However, Aprilia has slightly tweaked the engine to make it more responsive. The motor makes 10.4 bhp at 6750 RPM while delivering a peak torque of 11.4 Nm at 5000 RPM. Power is sent to the rear wheel via a CVT (Continuos Variable Transmission).

AUTOLIFE FEBRUARY 2017 65

RIDE AND HANDLING

The Aprilia SR150 is faster than you’d expect. Press the thumb starter and the 154.8cc engine comes to life with a rattling note. Twist the throttle and the SR150 pulls quicker than you’d expect. The continuously variable transmission means there’s no shifting required, and the SR 150 reaches 80 kmph without any fuss compelling you to push even harder till 105 kmph comfortably. The SR150 really hits its tagline ‘Be a Racer’ with a sporty demeanor when entering highways. You can ride it on the highway where it is plenty fast. It can also carve a mean corner. Navigating through traffic is surprisingly easy on the SR150. The scooter makes up for a preppy riding experience. You can maneuver through busy traffic with supreme ease. The SR150 was certainly a breeze to ride at low speeds, with an excellent turning radius and a pleasant power delivery. Overall, the scooter feels agile and confident to steer.

ERGONOMICS AND SUSPENSION

The ergonomics of the SR150 are quite comfortable for people of all shapes and sizes. The seat height for the SR150 is set at a slightly high 775 mm, for a relaxed riding posture. Although the seat is high, you will feel comfortable enough. There’s enough legroom and seat space for both the rider and pillion. The Aprilia SR150’s single frame tubular chassis is suspended by a hydraulic double-telescopic fork at the front and twin hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear. The scooter’s 14-inch wheels combine with a traditional fork to deliver superb manoeuvrability and response for a scooter. The rear monoshock soaks up bumps and undulations with ease. When pushed further, the SR150 responded quite admirably on all types of terrain. The scooter has a fuel tank capacity of 6.5 litres and gets wrapped around with 120/70 section tubeless tyres on both wheels. Braking duties are handled by a 220mm ventilated front disc brake with twin-piston calipers & 140mm rear drum brake.

VERDICT

Is the SR150 the best of both worlds? In most aspects, yes. Surprising dynamics ,smooth and sporty handling, the Aprilia SR150 is a perfectly capable machine both on and off the highway. The performance is excellent, the handling is stable and the ride quality is supple. From the moment you turn on the ignition, the SR 150’s acceleration, pick up, agility and braking will impress you to the core. The cherry on the top of the whole package is the attractive pricing. While the price tag of Rs 2, 39,900 is a little higher than many of its competitors, the SR150 is still a phenomenal package. The grin-factor should definitely convince you to get one.

Owner’s Review I owned a Hyundai Active, a hatchback, before. So coming to this sedan is surely an upgrade. Everything inside is comfortable and feels luxurious and what I really love is the safety feature. I use the Rapid primarily for the commercial use, so the safety of my passengers is my top priority, and the car delivers really well. I love how they have worked everything out and are different and better from the other brands in the market today. My main concern, as I said, is for my customers. The passengers need to have ample of legroom and a comfortable seating position. The car has these all. Now, talking about the exteriors, personally, the styling of the overall market is almost homogeneous. However, for the price point, the styling of this is really premium.

Sujan Man Amatya

Aster Travel and Tours Pvt. Ltd.

The hard thing about long drives in Nepal is the meandering hill road. But when I took the Rapid to Chitwan and Pokhara, it did a very good job tackling them. The turning radius is really good, and what makes it better is that I don’t have to slow down to take those sharp turns. Previously when I used to drive the Hyundai i10 and such, I had to slow down before turning. Not the case with this. Skoda apparently doesn’t have a proper queuing system in their servicing facility. It’s a bit chaotic, and since Fiat and Skoda have a workshop together, it tends to get a bit messy at times. But that is the only flaw I can see. Rest, the company has an excellent aftersales and support team. I got the older model, and have booked the newer one, which means I’m really happy with it. Additionally, for this price point, the features are really premium and as a travel agent, the best car for our clients. And I’m sure that anyone who purchases it, will be really happy driving it.

KUSHAL SHRESTHA Sr. Manager, Automotive & Heavy Equipment Marketing and Brand Management At Continental Trading Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. WORDS & PHOTOS : AL TEAM

HOW SATISFIED ARE YOU WITH THE PERFORMANCE AND SALES OF KIA MOTORS IN NEPAL? Well firstly, we don’t want to be satisfied ever because, if we’re satisfied there is no progress, or worse, the motivation gets lost to reach a level that you want to achieve. We are, however, happy that we have been able to fill a void that was in the market for entry level vehicles. We are also thrilled that our customers are getting the same Picanto as that our European customers. AS COMPARED TO OTHER KOREAN COUNTERPARTS, HOW DO YOU ASSESS THE PERFORMANCE OF KIA MOTORS IN NEPAL? KIA being limited to Korean brands would be too humble. It is among the top 5 automobile brands in the US and among the top 3 in the UK. So, we would not want to limit our competition to just Korean brands in the global perspective but in the overall automobile industry. In the past, the main concern for KIA was that we were lacking in some of the technical aspects like aerodynamics and reliability, but since then we have been able to improve on that with the Sportage. Today, the design standards have elevated and KIA being compared to economical cars has been replaced with us being compared to premium class brands. We are very satisfied by that. In terms of Nepali automobile industry, KIA has the best design and quality but not that good pricing. But if customers can visualize all the cars from every Korean brand in Nepal, we would like to say that KIA Sportage is the most reasonably priced SUV in Nepal with very good aesthetics. However, in the entry level segment, we have had a hard time to efficiently price our vehicles because of the astronomical taxations. WHAT ACCORDING TO YOU ARE THE SEGMENTS IN WHICH KIA NEEDS TO FOCUS MORE ON? facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

In the Nepali context, KIA has to focus on the entry level vehicles and we need to penetrate that segment. The KIA Picanto is now available again with a 75 percent buy-back guarantee. Obviously, there are some terms and conditions that apply but that is one of the best offers that you can get in the market. People think KIA does not have a high resale value but what customers have in their mind is not because of the brands but by the number of vehicles in the market. What they have to realize is that we need to see it in a long term basis. HOW KIA LOOKS AT THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE MARKET IN NEPAL? WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES? We are very proud of the KIA Soul EV. Yes, there were other electric cars but none of them were able to make a statement like the Soul EV. The KIA Soul EV has more features than other fossil fuel based cars. We have heating systems, ABS, and 6 airbags to name a few. We have had reviews from previous electric car owners who have had a lot of complaints with their cars but when they came for their test drive of the Soul EV, they such good things to say about it, and most important thing is that they feel comfortable about owning one. Also, the KIA Soul EV is giving them a sense of responsibility by reducing their dependency on fossil fuels and preserving them for future generations. IT TOOK LONG FOR NEPALI CONSUMERS TO ACCEPT ELECTRIC VEHICLES. WHAT ACCORDING TO YOU IS THE KEY FACTOR WHICH RESTRAINS NEPALI CUSTOMERS FROM BUY EV’S? The first thing is that, all the EV’s we have sold are owned as a second car. The charging stations can be a hassle in the minds of the public. There is a need to have facilities and resources in different parts of Nepal when we go for long drives. In Nepal, the only thing that is holding back the EV is the problem in

the convenience of charging the vehicle. HOW MANY KIA SOUL EVS HAVE YOU SOLD SO FAR? WHO ARE YOUR TARGET MARKET CONSUMERS? We have already sold 11 EV’s and it hasn’t even been properly launched yet. Yes, it will take some time for it to be seen on the roads. Also, we don’t want to limit our target to anything or anyone. The Kia market can be divided into 5 segments, which are: General, AsiaPacific, Europe, North America, Brazil; and we fall under General. Basically, in the General market, we have a 3 year warranty or 1 lakh kilometers. It is supposed to be higher but because of the way we drive and the roads here in Nepal, we have reduced it to this range. DO YOU THINK WE HAVE THE NECESSARY INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUPPORT ELECTRIC MOBILITY SYSTEM? Yes, we have the necessary infrastructures in terms of resources but not in terms of availability. The concerned stakeholders should look at the benefits of Electric Mobility System as compared with conventional fossil fuel vehicles. HOW DO YOU ACCESS THE AFTER SALES SERVICE PROVIDED BY KIA? We have put our best foot forward in terms of the after sales where we frequently train our after-sales department on every new launch, and also routinely in between as well.

THE KIA SOUL EV HAS MORE FEATURES THAN OTHER FOSSIL FUEL BASED CARS. AUTOLIFE FEBRUARY 2017 71

Car Care with Calash

All about tyre maintenance Kalash is an automotive engineering technician and a motorcycle enthusiast with a deep love for puns.

Owning a car has become a necessity in today’s evolving Nepal. What used to be viewed as a luxury for the very well-off people has become the common man’s utility function. Nevertheless, it remains a considerably large investment regardless of the purchase you choose to make. Once someone buys a car, they tend to keep it for at least ten years or until the vehicle reaches its ultimate demise. Car owners spend tens of thousands every year on maintenance and taxes and it just keeps getting costlier every year. However, with a few tips and tricks you can cut down on the maintenance costs by doing a few things yourself or by getting it done on time by trained professionals if you choose to do so.

FRONT

A vehicle is a modern engineering marvel and has a lot of moving parts that go hand in hand for smooth and safe operation. Even a single component working out of sync or improperly and can lead to a spike in the running costs. Our goal here is to keep everything in check so that our vehicles don’t surprise us at the most unexpected times.

72

AUTOLIFE FEBRUARY 2017

So we begin with the easy parts first; the tyres. The tyres play a vital role in our daily commute. Not only do they provide a comfortable ride by acting as a cushion, but they also provide the grip necessary to stay in control on the vehicle. If possible, check your tyres everyday for any cuts, foreign objects, or cracks on the tread and sidewall, because a puncture on the side of the road is not only embarrassing, but also timeconsuming and a nuisance. Maintain the recommended tyre air pressure by referring to your vehicle owner’s manual. It is also a good idea to do a brief visual inspection of the tread pattern while inspecting for cuts and cracks. If there is any evidence of uneven tyre wear, an immediate wheel alignment is required. For optimal tyre life and to even out the tread wear, it is important to perform a tyre rotation every 5000km to 8000km of driving. Follow the diagram below to perform a tyre rotation job at home.

When performing a tyre rotation, the two rear wheels go forward in opposite directions, whereas the two front wheels come to the rear in their current position.

We may take checking the tyre pressure of the vehicle for granted but it plays a vital role in the longevity of the tyre, smoothness of the ride and greatly affects fuel mileage. It is a good idea to do a quick visual check, if not a thorough check with a tyre pressure gauge every day. During winter, a tyre might lose its pressure as a result of the air getting denser due to the weather and during summer, a tyre might gain pressure because of heat.

When the tread on the tyre comes down to the level of the bumps shown in red, it is time to change tyres.

When the tread wear indicator on your tyres show up, it means that it is time for new tyres to be fit in. Usually, with tyre rotations being done regularly, you will find that the tread has worn off evenly on all four tyres. It is highly recommended that all tyres are changed at the same time so that they are a perfect match, but if you must, you can just change a set on each axle, either the front or back in a pair. When you put in new tyres, they must always go to the rear axle, as worn in tyres have more grip than brand new tyres, which gives you more control over your vehicle under stressful situations. When you get the new tyre put on the wheel, make sure the technician checks which way the tyres are supposed to spin, some tyres have an arrow printed pointing towards the direction of travel, while some have “Inner/ Outer” printed on the respective sides. After the tyre is mounted on the wheel, make sure to have it balanced on a wheel-balancing machine. After the wheel balancing is done, an alignment check is highly recommended. What an alignment check does is that it makes sure that all the wheels are straight and that the tyres don’t wear unevenly and prematurely. An alignment check sounds expensive, but it’ll be cheaper than having to replace your tyres too quickly. Pro tip: fill up your tyres with nitrogen gas, if it is possible. Nitrogen gas is less likely to escape through the tyre than oxygen gas, meaning you’ll have to re-inflate your tyres less and it also helps maintain a steady tyre pressure. So that was all about tyres for today. Until next time, adios. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

THE SELFBALANCING MOTORCYCLE HONDA RIDING ASSIST DEBUTS AT CES 2017

In a global debut at CES 2017, Honda unveiled its Riding Assist technology, which leverages Honda’s robotics technology to create a self-balancing motorcycle that greatly reduces the possibility of falling over while the motorcycle is at rest. Rather than relying on gyroscopes, which add a great deal of weight and alter the riding experience as announced by other companies, the Honda Riding Assist motorcycle incorporates technology originally developed for the company’s UNI-CUB personal mobility device.

I

The Honda UNI-CUB is a self-balancing personal mobility device that enables the seated rider to control speed, move in any direction and stop, all by simply shifting body weight. Last year, the company opened the UNI-CUB’s API seeking to facilitate the creation of software that can control the device from a smartphone and other devices, which would provide the potential to expand its value and functionality for people. This expands upon the UNICUB’s original system, which currently allows the seated rider to control speed, move in any direction and stop, all by simply shifting body weight. With the ability to freely move forward, backward, side-to-side and diagonally, UNI-CUB can quickly and easily maneuver among people. The Honda Riding Assist motorcycle won the Best of CES 2017 “Best Innovation” and “Best Automotive Technology” awards as judged by Engadget*1, the official partner of the Best of CES Awards, as well as the Popular Mechanics magazine’s*2 Best of CES “Editors’ Choice Awards.”

GENEVA MOTOR SHOW 2017 A PREVIEW

There’s less than a week to go until the Geneva Motor Show and manufacturers are beginning to tease the new unveils coming to this year’s event. The Geneva Motor Show is one of the European motor industry’s most important events, and it’s always a hotbed of activity for new car launches. Europe’s first major motoring show of the year often sees top manufacturers unveil their most significant cars. Last year’s event saw the launch of the Chiron, Bugatti’s successor to the recordbreaking Veyron, as well as the Centenario, another ultra-rare hypercar from Lamborghini. With more supercars and mass volume vehicles set to appear, here’s what to expect at this year’s Geneva Motor Show

LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER VELAR:

Range Rover is all set to officially launch one of its most radical-looking cars, the Velar, at the Geneva Motor Show. The new Velar coupé-SUV has been designed to rival the likes of the Porsche Macan, BMW X6, and Mercedes GLE Coupé. It will fill that big gap between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. The new model will likely share many of its components with the Jaguar F-Pace. Despite its more sporting intentions, the Velar is understood to retain a generous ground clearance, along with short front and rear overhangs to maintain the brand’s reputation for class-leading off-road ability – though, like the F-Pace and Evoque, it won’t have low-range gearing. Under the bonnet, expect a range of turbocharged four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines shared with the F-Pace, along with the possibility of the 5.0-litre supercharged V8 from the Range Rover Sport SVR. Although it is possible that the Velar could use the electric powertrain JLR is developing for its upcoming Jaguar I-Pace SUV, it is more likely to feature a hybrid version.

DENDROBIUM:

A new all-electric hypercar, called the Dendrobium, is set to feature at the Geneva Motor Show. The concept car is the work of Singaporean electric vehicle specialists Vanda Electrics. Vanda has also enlisted the services of Williams Advanced Engineering – the technology wing of the Williams Group and Formula 1 team – as

78

AUTOLIFE FEBRUARY 2017

a technical partner to aid in the car’s development phase. Vanda says that Williams’ influence will be seen in the car’s powertrain, batteries and aerodynamics. Vanda says that the door and roof will open automatically in a synchronised manner, supposedly resembling a fully-opened dendrobium flower. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

SKODA OCTAVIA VRS 245:

The hottest Skoda Octavia ever is on the way and set for a Geneva debut. The Octavia vRS 245 gets 242bhp out of its turbocharged 2.0-litre TSI engine, meaning 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. With a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine producing 15bhp more than the old car, this is the most potent Octavia produced yet.

MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE CROSS

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is reviving the Eclipse badge for a new compact SUV, which will be unveiled at the 2017 Geneva motor show. The new crossover incarnation keeps the bubbly rear end and well-rounded front mug of the Eclipse coupe sold from 1989 to 2012. From the side profile, the Eclipse Cross resembles a sporty station wagon. The company says the name Cross is short for crossover.

MERCEDES-MAYBACH G650 LANDAULET:

Mercedes unveiled the next addition of its luxury Maybach line — an off-roader that’s more limousine than SUV. Called the Mercedes G650 Landaulet, the car has a massive amount of space and seats designed to be more comfortable than your bed. The previous two monster G-Wagens made do with lowly V8s. This one features a twin-turbocharged V12 making 630 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. Like its predecessors, this G650 uses a four-wheel-drive system with front, center, and rear differential locks, and sends power to solid portal axles front and rear. These axles move the differential and drive axles above the wheel centers for additional ground clearance. Inside, the rear passengers will be in the lap of luxury, even while the driver is navigating particularly harsh terrain. Only 99 of these G650s will be built

PAGANI HUAYRA ROADSTER:

The Pagani Huayra Roadster will be the ultimate showstopper at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. It’s taken Pagani six years to debut Huayra Roadster – the coupe appeared at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011 – and in that time it has developed a roadster lighter than its hard top sibling. The Huayra Roadster weights 1,280kg – 80kg lighter than the coupe. This weight saving has been achieved through the use of a newly developed carbontitanium composite known as Carbo-Triax HP52, which means the Roadster is not only lighter, but a claimed 52 per cent stiffer. Further mass has been reduced through the use of a new aluminium alloy called HiForg to construct the

80

AUTOLIFE FEBRUARY 2017

suspension setup – a 25 per cent weight saving in this area. The Huayra Roadster gets Pagani’s trademark AMGdeveloped V12 engine. Using two turbochargers and benefiting from the developments applied to the engine used in the Huayra BC it delivers 753bhp and over 1000Nm of torque. Pagani hasn’t revealed any performance figures, but a 0-62mph dash around or even less than three seconds is likely. Mated to the engine is a new seven-speed sequential gearbox also developed for the hardcore BC. Pagani has revealed that the Roadster is priced from €2,280,000 before tax. Production will be limited to 100 units, but all have already been sold.

2017 SUBARU XV:

Subaru will reveal its second-generation XV, its compact SUV, at the 2017 Geneva motor show in March. The new 2017 XV will follow its predecessor by building on the design of the regular Impreza hatch. Power will likely be provided by the same 115kW/196Nm 2.0-litre boxer engine that drives the Impreza, matched to six-speed manual and CVT automatic transmissions.

VOLKSWAGEN ARTEON:

Now that Volkswagen has ended the production of the CC, the upcoming Arteon is likely to be a suitable replacement for the aging coupe. The model will also debut a new design language for the VW brand. How did VW come up with such a name? “Art” is said to represent the car’s emotional design, while “eon” is VW’s way of identifying premium models in its lineup. The name coincides with Phideon, the name for VW’s top model in China.

VOLKSWAGEN T-ROC:

The production version of the Volkswagen T-Roc SUV concept is set to be revealed at the 2017 Geneva motor show. Riding on the company’s MQB platform, the production version of the T-Roc is expected to have similar dimensions to the Golf hatch, which features a wheelbase of 2640mm – 41mm shorter than the new mid-sized Tiguan. Visually striking features include the relatively short overhangs and the multi-part 19-inch alloy wheels with size 245/45 tyres. Inside, the production T-Roc is set to adopt the same dashboard

and features as the newly unveiled facelifted seventh-generation Golf, complete with an optional high-definition Active Info Display instrument pack and 9.2in infotainment monitor supporting touch, speech and gesture control. The production VW T-Roc will be available with a 113 bhp 1.0-litre turbocharged threecylinder petrol engine as well as a new 1.5-litre TSI Evo turbocharged fourcylinder petrol engines of the new VW Golf among options. There will be a GTI variant powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with up to 242 bhp on offer.

TATA TAMO FUTURO:

Tata Motors will showcase its all-new and first-ever sportscar at the upcoming Geneva Auto Show this March. The Futuro, as the sportscar is likely to be called, will be the first product out of the newly formed sub-brand TAMO. The interesting fact about the TAMO Futuro will be that it is a production-ready concept. It, however, will have a limited production run. The Futuro though will not be manufactured at the company’s regular production facilities. The Futuro will be powered by a bigger Revotron motor that is expected to produce a not-so significant (for a sportscar) 200PS.
