EDITORIAL Between the last issue and this one, we have been in a loss of words. Why? The Nada Auto Show! Being auto fanatics ourselves, this is an annual event we look forward to. A lot of new things to be excited about and we must say that we were not disappointed. One of the biggest announcements was the Yamaha FZ25. Not only did we get to see it, but feel the Streetfighter rumble beneath us. Another thing we, along with many others, were excited about was the launch of CFMoto, a name that has been stirring things up in the industry recently. Then there’s the Tata Tigor which is a stylish sedan. Since we’re talking cars, there’s the Suzuki Ignis we were looking forward to for it’s their latest compact SUV. Dashain’s around the corner. Along with the festivities come a barrage of deals and discounts in the automobile industry. And since we care about you, we’ve listed some of the best ones so that you make the right choice. All you have to do is sit down, relax, and flip through.
HAPPY DASHAIN!

THE FIRST STRIKING FEATURE OF THE CFMOTO 150NK IS ITS NAKED LOOKS
Y
Yet another newcomer in the two-wheeler market, all eyes are on CFMoto. Much of the attention received by the CFMoto is attributable to the presence these motorcycles have on the Nepalese roads. And we wouldn’t expect anything less considering the designers of the machines are none others than KISKA, the same designers that established the aggressive beasts from KTM Motorcycles’ stable. Now that it’s here, we’re very much on the bandwagon too. The entire lineup screams aggression and the naked sports bike segment has a new contender. While the 400NK and 600NK were more tantalizing prospective to test ride, we thought of having a go at what we expect to be their biggest sellers, the 150NK. The newest naked entrant into the commuter motorcycle segment, here is our take of the CFMoto 150NK.
STYLING
The CFMoto 150NK is a good looking motorcycle. The first striking feature of the CFMoto 150NK is its naked looks. Kiska Design stylist Bjorn Shuster, who was responsible for detailing the 150NK and putting his boss Gerald Kiska’s concept into reality, has done an excellent job in the styling department. The CFMoto 150NK is the first KISKA-designed CFMoto motorcycle. KISKA, the Austrian design firm, is best known for its work with KTM over the years from research, product planning and vehicle design to brand communication and temporary architecture. The 150NK does a decent job of standing out amongst the 150cc crowd. The front end of the 150NK sports an aggressivelooking angular headlamp cowl with LED pilot lamps encased within the headlight fairing. Upside down (USD) telescopic front forks station themselves above 17-inch stylish front rims with hydraulic front disc brakes. The rear of the motorcycle is as impressive as the front. At the rear, there is an integrated twopiece seat, a compact stainless steel muffler and LED tail lights. The 150NK’s ignition key sits on the 10-litre fuel tank, allowing a good view of the instruments cockpit. The multi-function instrument panel includes all the information you need. The console has a bold analogue tachometer, a digital speedometer, facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

gear and service indicators, and riding mode indicator in addition to the other, necessary readouts.
ENGINE & PERFORMANCE
The 150NK is powered by a liquidcooled, 149.4cc, four-stroke, single-cylinder engine. The ignition can be done through an electric starter. Open the throttle and the engine comes to life. But the good first impressions set by the styling begin to alter once you get moving. The motor makes 11.8 bhp of power at 9000 RPM and 12.2 NM at 7000 RPM. For those who are used to more punchy machines, the motorcycle may fall short of your expectations when you accelerate from a dead stop. However, you get to choose between ECO and SPORT mode via a switch on the left handlebar. While the Economy mode feels slightly sluggish it returns better mileage numbers, the Sport mode delivers a hint of sportiness with brisk acceleration. The 150NK gets a six-speed gearbox, but the motor falls slightly short to the motor’s power delivery characteristics. Although it’s not quick off the mark, once 28
AUTOLIFE SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017
you cruise past the mid-range rpm you begin to feel the right flow of power. The 150NK fares well once it gets rolling. As you speed up further, the bike goes swiftly till you reach the ton mark. Give it some open tarmac and the bike will excel. Navigating the motorcycle through heavy traffic is easy, all thanks to the Kerb weight of 142 kg. The suspension is really well set-up, but it can feel a bit too stiff over sharp bumps. Although bumpy surfaces can upset the bike’s orientation, the suspension setup coupled with a high ground clearance of 150mm offers a good blend of ride quality and handling. On the braking front, the 150NK comes equipped with 218mm hydraulic disc brakes with four piston calipers at the front and a 240mm disc brake with two pistons at the back. Although the brakes look skinny, they provide good bite. No doubt, the meaty rubbers at both ends do a great job, but a lot of this ability can also be credited to the tubular lattice frame which provides dimensional stability and lightweight construction as well as optimal stiffness. The one-piece handlebar delivers www.autolife.com.np
a comfortable, upright stance requiring little effort to adjust to the overall ergonomics. The riding position is aggressive with forward set foot-pegs and seat height is 775mm.
VERDICT
The CFMoto 150NK is definitely one of the best-looking 150cc naked motorcycles you can find in the market at the moment. While the 150NK flaunts an aggressive attitude with its KISKA design, it comes slightly short on meeting the expectation set by the aesthetics in terms of performance. However, the motorcycle does return an impressive economy. Although it’s marginally more expensive than other motorcycles in the country, its premium design, tubular lattice frame, two riding modes and good economy does hold an advantage over other motorcycles.

The first step in determining pricing is to find out what our customers value, then adjust our service accordingly, to provide the best value. In this way, pricing can be seen as intrinsically linked to our positioning strategy. Of course, our pricing is high as compared to others but we are not competing with local workshops, we are providing hassle-free best service and customer are happy to pay for it. The sub-4 meter sedan segment opened new avenues for consumers of automobiles in the middle class bracket, and in many ways it was a stroke of genius in terms of marketing intelligence. Let’s break it down here: the sedan exemplifies elegance, class, and sophistication. It’s a reflection of the success that you as a person have achieved, and for this reason, buying a sedan is the ultimate goal for many people. However, what truly defines the character of a sedan is the length of its body (more specifically, longer than 4 meters), which means it falls under a higher excise duty tax bracket for automobiles in India (20% for sedans).
T
“ COMPACT AND STYLISH, THE ALL NEW TATA TIGOR IS DEFINITELY AN EYE CATCHER
Hatchbacks on the other hand are shorter in length, below 4 meters in length) and therefore are cheaper with only 8% excise duty tax. But it does not signify the same appeal that the sedans do. So what the sub 4-meter sedans essentially do is bring you the best of both worlds. It has the appearance of the sedan that in turn gives you a similar experience to some extent while still remaining in the tax bracket that keeps the vehicle relatively cheap. Taking advantage of this budget scheme, Tata Motors was the first to offer a sub 4-meter sedan with the Indica CS (Compact Sedan). This was marketed as the cheapest sedan at the time, and since then Tata has honed their craft in the segment. Fast-forward to today and we have with us the newest offering from Tata in the sub 4-meter sedan segment, the Tata Tigor that is the booted version of the Tiago. It comes with a slight twist and boasts of an exciting new Styleback design. Lucky for us, we got a chance to take the new Tata Tigor out for a spin.

EXTERIOR
Compact and stylish, the all new Tata Tigor is definitely an eye catcher. Detaching from the traditional threebox design of conventional compact sedans, the Tigor’s design correlates more to that of a coupe. Tata calls it a styleback design and it definitely succeeds in providing style edge in its segment. The face of the Tigor pretty looks very similar to the Tiago except for a few minor details. Up front large sweptback headlamps flank the oversized mash-type grille. The bonnet gets creases that run above the headlights and merge into the A pillars. Move on to the profile and you will notice the distinctive shoulder line that merges with the tailamps. The distinctive changes in the Tigor in comparison to the Tiago can be seen towards the rear where the roof sweeps down to fuse with the boot. It is one of the best designs to come from Tata and definitely one of the best amongst competition. Around back the Tigor gets wraparaound LED tail lamps with high mounted LED stop lamps stylishly integrated into it. The Tata logo sits right over a thick chrome strip and the rear window gets a black spoiler that gives it a sportier and youthful look.

INTERIOR
Inside, the Tigor is well designed and packed with all the features you would want in an everyday city car. It has superior legroom and 24 utility spaces to provide ample space for storage. The style aspect continues with a dualtone interior featuring a soft diamond shaped central console with Connectnext Touchscreen infotainment system by Harman Kardon. The Tigor gets a three spoke steering wheel that provides decent feedback while driving. The seats have a high seating position rather than conventional sedans which seats lower to the ground. This helps the driving as well as the passengers to have more spacious leg room and a better view of the road ahead.
PERFORMANCE
This stylish city slicker gets a 1.2L petrol engine which churns out a healthy 84 bhp @ 6000 RPM and 114 Nm of torque @ 3500 RPM. This, combined with a buttery smooth 5 speed gear box, making driving through the city easy and effortless. You get to choose between eco and city mode while driving and you can do it easily with a push of a button on the front console. Switch to eco-mode and you trade off power delivery for better mileage. While the diminished power delivery leaves a gaping void in its performance, using eco mode to lumber around a city is not the worst thing in the

world. Having said that, we definitely had more fun staying away from the powered down persona of the Tigor. There is a good response from the engine even at low revs and upshifts are an easy affair with the light clutch and smooth gear shifting mechanism. Driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic is further aided by its ability to easily fit inside tight spaces and good all-around visibility. The lightweight makes the car agile, and the car takes well to broken roads as well, with its high ground clearance. In terms of braking, the Tigor offers good feel at the pedal and the system feels adequate enough to handle panic stops. Tata has equipped this car with solid discs at its front and drum brakes at the back.

Tata has continuously improved through the years, especially from the days of the Indica CS. What used to be considered much of an ugly duckling, Tata’s current lineup it falls amongst some of the best-designed vehicles in the market. It is also amongst the few cars in the compact sedan segment that manages to look good. Features and performances have also picked up pace with competition. If there was any doubt as to whether offerings from Tata could come up to par with other consumer focused manufacturers’ products, there isn’t any more. The styleback design of the Tigor is a winner. www.autolife.com.np

The old Ignis was quite a capable machine, with its bullet proof Japanese reliability, good engine and an attractive look at its time. Now can the new Ignis follow its predecessor’s footsteps? That is the question that we have come here to find out. Suzuki is advertising the Ignis as an ultracompact SUV which puts it in a similar category to the Mahindra KUV100 and the other crossover hatches. So let’s see how it fares.
EXTERIOR
Looks can often be very subjective and I for one think that the front end of the Ignis looks really good with the LED DRLs (Day time Running Lamps) and the projector headlamps. The chrome around the headlights and the entire grille is a single piece of chrome. The boxy shape , flared wheel arches and the blacked out 15 inch wheels give it a very SUV-ish look but moving to the back the design language doesn’t seem to carry over. It looks small and not very SUV-ish in my opinion, but as mentioned earlier beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. You can get the car in two different paint styles, one with a single tone finish or you facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

can go for the dual tone paint job in which the roof and the mirrors are painted in contrasting colors. This option is only available in the Zeta and Alpha variants of the car.
INTERIOR
The dual tone finish is carried over on the inside as well but this however is available in the Delta, Zeta and the Alpha variants of the Ignis. The Ignis that we were driving was in the dual tone Blue and white finish and the interior was black and white with a little blue accents here and there. The dual tone interior looked really attractive and up market but from our little drive we quickly found out that the white portions of the interior get dirty really fast. Although the whole dash is finished in hard plastic it looked really good for the price point with a 7 inch touchscreen infotainment system taking a lot of attention in the middle of the dash. The infotainment system is easy to use but can get laggy at times. The steering mounted controls makes life that much easier when you have your phone connected through the Bluetooth because you don’t have to take you hand off the steering wheel to answer/reject calls, change music or increase/decrease volume. The voice command is also quite

handy. The climate control sits right below the infotainment system, it looks very futuristic and is easy to use. The car is pretty spacious as well although three adults in the back might be a squeeze but there is adequate amount of head and leg room in the back for tall passengers as well. The car comes with power windows on all four doors and electronic adjustable ORVM (Outside Rear View Mirror) so that you can easily position the mirror according to your need without having to stick your hand out and adjust it manually. Additionally the mirror is electronically foldable as well so whenever you have to fold the ORVMs you can do it with a press of a button the same goes with opening it as well. The Zeta and the Alpha models have keyless entry and push start button, so you can put your key in your pocket and forget it there. The sensor on the car and the key when in close proximity will communicate with each other and you can open the driver side door with just a press of a button that’s present on the door handle.
“
THERE IS ADEQUATE AMOUNT OF HEAD AND LEG ROOM IN THE BACK FOR TALL PASSENGERS AS WELL.
PERFORMANCE
The Suzuki Ignis is powered by the same reliable 1.2 liter petrol engine that has been used in the Swift and other offerings from the Suzuki line up. The 1197cc engine produces a healthy 82Bhp of facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

power @6000 RPM and 113Nm of torque @4200 RPM. Suzuki engines have been known to be rev happy and the same goes with this engine as well. It performs best higher up in the rev ranges so for best results we recommend pushing it past the 6000rpm mark. You don’t need to be changing gears very quickly because the engine loves the higher RPM range. The steering wheel is really light which makes it a really good city car. It comes in really handy when you have to maneuver through the Kathmandu traffic especially in this Pre Dashain rush. It is also very easy to reverse into tight parking spaces, the reverse camera and the parking sensor just make it even easier. Safety wise, all variants of the Ignis come equipped with dual Airbags, ABS (Antilock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution.) and ISOFIX child seat mounts.
VERDICT
The Ignis is a very good car for young people with its futuristic looks and its drivability. It will also appeal to nuclear families looking for their first car. The Ignis starts from NPR. 28,89,000/- for the Delta variant and goes up to NRP. 35,19,000/- for the dual tone Alpha variant. The Ignis will be a very good everyday driving car considering all its features, size, fuel economy and ease to drive. 64

YAMAHA DESCRIBES THE NEW FZ25 AS “A REFINED MIX OF RAW POWER ALONG WITH SUPERB CONTROL AND BALANCE WITH ASPIRATION TO MOVE TOWARDS A MORE POWERFUL BIKE”
s
Since its launch in 2008, the Yamaha FZ-Series has been hugely popular for its combination of superb performance and street-inspired styling. The FZ-Series has been a great performer, and has maintained its leading popularity as a strong brand in the deluxe segment. Building on that reputation, Yamaha recently introduced the muchawaited FZ25 in the Nepalese market. One of the most anticipated bikes of 2017, Yamaha describes the new FZ25 as “a refined mix of raw power along with superb control and balance with aspiration to move towards a more powerful bike”. It was the bike many people were waiting for, including us. We finally got to swing a leg over Yamaha’s newest offering inaugurating their entry into the quarter liter segment.
STYLING
The FZ25 inherits Yamaha’s street-inspired styling DNA which is intended to boost versatility and comfort. It possesses heaps of charisma without having to resort to over-the-top frills. The streetfighter inspired styling features a nifty three-light type low-slung headlight with LED lamps, faux vents on its muscular tank extensions, a chiseled 14-litre fuel tank, a stout muffler, a mudguard that moves with the swingarm and an impressive LED taillight unit. Sitting above the headlamp unit is an all-digital instrument cluster which displays a large speedometer, a horizontal tachometer, a fuel gauge, two trip meters, average fuel economy counter and a clock. There is no gear position indicator, which we believe should have been included. The styling of the FZ25 works together beautifully; everything from paint and finish to decals and build-quality look decently done for a relatively low priced bike. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

YAMAHA HASN’T JUST PUT MAD POWER STRAIGHT AWAY BUT PULLING AWAY IS JOYOUS ONCE YOU CLIMB GEARS.
ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE
The 249cc air-cooled 4-stroke, single-cylinder, SOHC, fuel-injected engine delivers both smooth response and sporty power. Although 20.30 bhp at 8000 RPM and 20 NM at 6000 RPM from a 250cc seem low on paper, the bike definitely steals the show when it comes to real life performance. Yamaha hasn’t just put mad power straight away but pulling away is joyous once you climb gears. The bike pulls crisply from 4,500 RPM upwards and escalates smoothly through the rev ranges, revving swiftly through the five-speed gearbox. The rev happy engine also gets a balancer to reduce vibration perceived by the riders. Power delivery is linear, progressive and well spread. The engine is mainly tuned for the meaty mid-range. With plentiful torque on tap, the FZ25 provides a pretty decent flick to maneuver through almost anything. There are no fancy stuffs, yet we are easily impressed with the performance. Top speed is likely to be just over a respectable 140 kmph.
RIDE AND HANDLING
When it comes to handling, the FZ25 definitely lives up to the expectation of the FZ suffix. At 148kg (with oil and a full fuel tank), the bike is extremely 76

lightweight, allowing it to perform competently with an engaging blend of effortless and reassuring stability. The bike offers the kind of character you can enjoy riding out nearly everywhere, and its suspensions setup and beefy tires make it a joy on the road. At the same time, the chassis offers the nimbleness and easy-to-use character for daily use as well as riding in a variety of scenarios. The riding position of the FZ25 sees a flat handlebar with an upright position providing a solid view of the road while the foot pegs are slightly rearward. Comfort is ideal for both city and highway riding. The flatter seat comes with slip-resistant cover to ensure both a comfortable feeling for the rider and the pillion. The sitting point on the pillion is about 12cm higher than that of the rider’s seat. Having said that, the slightly uncomfortable seats may not be enjoyable on long rides. The bike is very manageable at low speed, and has an enjoyably quick and responsive character. The 41mm telescopic front fork with 130mm of travel and
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
the lightweight link-less monocross rear suspension with 120mm of wheel travel provide a good combination of functionality and stability for enhanced comfort. Coupled with a 100/80-17 front and 140/70-17 rear tubeless tires from MRF, the motorcycle provides a good grip characteristics. The 282mm front disc with 2-pot brake caliper and a 220mm rear disc with a single-pot caliper produce an excellent stopping power providing a good feedback to the rider. The availability of ABS would have been a welcome addition.
VERDICT:
The FZ series has helped Yamaha enhance its solid brand image in the performance motorcycle segment, and the FZ25 looks set to take it even further. The FZ25’s blend of aesthetics, performance and value for money is hard to beat. These traits serve riders well in the city, and become even more fun when you take it out on the highway. Overall, this new entry from Yamaha is an intriguing option for riders looking for sporty performance in a street-friendly manner in the quarter-litre segment.
