They say a rolling stone gathers no moss, and it looks like someone has just got wind of this notion. Until very recently, it looked like Tata Motors were stuck in a rut and stagnation had hit them hard. The increasingly innovative and well designed auto-world was passing by and they were still finding it difficult to get out of a morbidly boring cycle. But their newest offering, which is by far their best yet, has put them back in the game. The Tata Zest has, as clichéd as this may sound, put back the Zest of life in Tata and we test drive the new contender in this month’s AutoLife. Another sight for sore eyes is the newest entrant into the already crowded scooter market: the Vespa. A historically iconic scooter, the brand is finally officially in the country with the Vespa LX 125. We never thought we’d be saying this, but this scooter is a head turner. Check out the full review inside. Now, if compact sedans and tame scooters aren’t your cup of tea, we have something bigger that might tickle your fancy. The Mitsubishi L200 Sportero is a pickup that has the looks and feel of an SUV but isn’t afraid to put in some work. Unleashing this onto some off road terrain was a pleasure, so if you’re the type that appreciates a little functionality in their vehicle, you wouldn’t want to miss this. There’s a lot more to keep you occupied inside. On the cycling front we have the Commencal El Camino Essential and there are features on two international autoshows we know you wouldn’t want to miss. We’ll leave you to it then. And to end on a high note, there are exciting new members that have joined the auto market of Nepal, the stunning MV Agusta F4 and the coveted off roader: Polaris ATVs. Read more of it inside.

Owner’s Review About five months back, me and my wife were looking for a powerful sedan and the Skoda Rapid seemed to be the most appropriate choice for us. We had heard a lot about the car and its outstanding performance. After purchasing the car I must say what we heard was extremely true. The exterior of the car looks smashing and also has a sporty essence to it. The clever design of the car makes it very spacious in the insides. The seats are comfortable making the vehicle excellent for long drives. Like I mentioned earlier, the car has a very powerful engine. The driving experience in Rapid is very smooth and pleasant. The performance of the car has been amazing so far and its perfect ground clearance makes it suitable for the roads of Kathmandu, unlike the others of its kind.

Gopal Shrestha

I would also like to add about their customer service. In our country, most companies are less concerned about their customers once their products are sold but Skoda differs. Whether it be timely follow ups about the performance or servicing, the company makes sure that their customers are pre informed and re-reminded Hence I believe that Skoda Rapid is a good value for money and I would definitely recommend it to others seeking for a sedan.

In pure electric mode, the i8 can touch a top speed of 120 km/hr and has a range of 37 kms. The BMW i8 is capable of performing a 100 km/hr in just 4.4 seconds and reach 250 km/hr (electronically limited). However, due to limited production, only 8 units of the supercar have been allotted to India for 2015. This would make the car really exclusive, a very important factor for someone buying a supercar.

An 18-litre fuel tank helps to achieve better fuel economy. Braking is done via a 240 mm front disc with a twin piston caliper. The STX and ETX are available in three traditional Aprilia colors; black, white and red. 32

MV AGUSTA F4 Gear Venture Bike Nepal, the authorized distributors of MV Agusta motorcycles in Nepal, has brought out the big gun. The series that resurrected the MV Agusta brand in 1998, the F4 is now in Nepal. Considered a technological masterpiece, the MV Agusta F4 is a mechanical marvel developed by the Italian manufacturers. The exquisite design that showboats a four pipe under tail exhaust, single sided swingarm and the traditional red and silver was created by motorcycle designer Massimo Tamburini. Its full fairing conceals a four cylinder, 4 stroke, 16 valve timing system “D.O.H.C that belts out a maximum of 195hp at 13400rpm. This allows you to propel the motorcycle into break neck speeds of 290km/h. It was made with the intentions of creating the most advanced hypersport bike in the market, and MV Agusta have definitely come very close with this sensational machine. This particular F4 belongs to Mr. Dikshant Dahal, but there will be more coming in soon.

The iconic noise of the two stroke engine and the retro styling of the handful of (classic) Vespas in Nepal have been the focus of craning necks and yearning desire of youngsters, hipsters and enthusiasts alike. Made popular by famous names of the Western pop culture, Vespa scooters have stood their ground right from the 50’s. It was a symbol of freedom, rebellion and held a lot of culture. So, it didn’t take much effort on the part of Vespa to become the ultimate scooter to own; even here in Nepal. However, not everyone had the luxury of owning a Vespa scooter. They weren’t readily available and the ones that were available had a hefty price tag for a second hand machine that consumed an exorbitant amount of fuel and had spare part availability issues. Just for the sake of it, some resorted to make do with a Bajaj Chetak. Still not a Vespa though. People made peace with the fact that they might not be able

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

to own a Vespa anytime soon, and so the scooter market grew. A plethora of options flooded the scooter segment, yet almost every product looked and performed like the other. For the majority of the people, the Vespa appeared to be just a missed piece of history. Until now… The iconic Vespa has finally come to Nepal thanks to Anna Business Group. Be it for the Italian heritage, culture, the retro styling, or the demands of being hip in terms of pop culture the Vespa scooter receives due attention. We don’t see ourselves as a bunch who’d be excited to test ride a scooter, but the opportunity to try out the Vespa had us reaching for our tightest pair of trousers, most fitting brightly colored shirts and retro shades.

Styling Without a doubt, the Vespa LT 125 3V stands out from the abundance of scooters in the streets of Nepal. There probably

isn’t any other scooter that turns as many heads as this does, in fact, turning heads on a scooter was a first for us. Italians have always been obsessed in perfecting their automobile designs and it is no different with the It is offered in Nero Vulcano,Taormina,Rosso, all colors that demand attention. They have been successful in retaining the retro look to a large extent by resorting to the clean timeless design. It is also the only brand that uses an all-steel monocoque construction, which ensures good quality. Everything from the round headlamps, large round mirrors, the bulge on the side as well as the generous use of chrome help in giving the Vespa its unique retro style. The end of the handle grip and the front mudguard also has a chrome garnish with the Vespa emblem embossed on it. The grab rail that extends through the curved rear is also unique and surprisingly practical, and also chrome. The front apron does have a Piaggio logo that we wouldn’t have missed, but all other styling elements are spot on. Triangular shaped designs are used on the alloy wheels, the front of which has a disc brake. The speedometer has a modern touch to it, which is thanks to the carbon-finish background

with the speedometer placed in the middle. The dials are ambitiously marked all the way to 120 km/h. There is also a digital clock on the speedometer and buttons to adjust the time. Switch gears are the usual solitary indicator for left and right and high beam. However, it takes some time getting used to its placements as you tend to feel your hands straining to operate them at first. There are lots of storage spaces with a lockable glove box behind the front apron and underseat storage is good enough for an open face helmet. Just. You will also notice that the seating position is very high and shorter riders might need to scoot forward on the narrow seat.

Performance Ride quality is really good and the Vespa readily ventures onto roads that are ride-able on scooters. You get used to the riding position fairly quickly. What isn’t really quick is the scooter itself. The 125cc, threevalve engine makes 10.06PS and

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE February 2015 45

10.6Nm which isn’t going to appease the performance freak. But, then again, that’s not what you look for in a Vespa. Nevertheless, a little more power wouldn’t have hurt. You only begin to feel satisfied after it crosses the 35-45km/h mark. That’s when it begins to hit its stride. Vibrations are evidently present up until you reach a steady speed. The LT 125 3V doesn’t score very high when it comes to stopping capabilities. The disc brakes in the front don’t offer as much bite as they appear to promise. Coming to a halt isn’t a brisk affair and it could have used some improvement. Maneuvering in traffic and around corners is good fun and is up to par with its competitors in the segment. Its low ground clearance was also of nuisance at times. When putting it on the side stand, you have to be careful and make sure you’re parking on a flat surface. The side stand insists on keeping the scooter slightly upright and finding the wrong angled slope can cause it to topple over.

46

AUTOLIFE February 2015

Verdict Before you even think about getting a Vespa, you need to understand that it isn’t just a scooter but a life style product. Then only will you be able to justify the steep pricing. Although it stands up to other scooters in the segment, is the Vespa LT 125 3V an extraordinary performer? No. Is it a sensible buy if you’re looking for value for money? No. But the Vespa isn’t targeted for the performance hungry or the economy conscious. What it is is a piece of missed history that the modern people can enjoy today. The strong performance, stylish looks and Vespa name are enough to lure buyers to get the LT 125 3V. It is probably the only way to turn heads on a commercially available scooter in Nepal. However, when it’s all said and done, the price tag still is a huge factor. It would take a very committed enthusiast to look past the run of the mill performance and be taken aback enough by the styling and cultural heritage to buy a scooter at a cost that could get you a decent enough motorcycles like the Pulsar 200NS or even a Karizma ZMR DDS. With money left to spare. But of course, this is a Vespa.

Tata Motors has forever had strong after-sales customer services, functionality and spare parts availability as its strengths against its competitors in the local market. However, the game wasn’t all fair when it came to aesthetic appeal and feature heavy offerings. But, now they are shedding their traditional persona and are aiming to appeal to the more style conscious audience. With that notion in mind, their newest offering is in the fore front of the wave of change: the Tata Zest. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Tata Motors was in need of some major changes to keep up with the market demand, and the Zest is their first car to commence the resurrection. It might also be the first step in becoming the choice for the new generation.

wraparound projector headlights on either side of a piano black honeycomb like grille. The top variant that we featured also has day light running lights in the driving light cavities which give it a lot of character.

However, the compact sedan market is extremely competitive, and that’s putting it lightly. Any new entrant has its work cut out for it. It has to be able to stand its ground in terms of styling, performance and above all, the price tag has to be spot on. However, there is also a lot of potential and opportunity in the segment if things are done right. We test the Tata Zest to see if it is up to mark to compete in the compact sedan segment.

Thick shoulder lines run through the side profile giving the Zest an

Exterior Nailing the styling aspect in the compact sedan segment seems to be an eluding task for manufacturers. However, the Zest has done a pretty convincing job. The Tata Zest is refreshingly different from anything with a Tata logo on the bonnet and it commands a fair deal of attention.

edgy styling as well as a smooth transition to the rear. Contrasting to the long and sharp front end, the rear is slightly stumpy. However, that always seems to be the case with cars in this segment. In actuality, Tata does a pretty decent job of it. The back houses a wrap around tail lamp linked with a thick chrome bar. It also has a beefy rear bumper.

Interior Of all the offerings that Tata has presented, the cabin of the Tata Zest is the best and you come to the conclusion as soon as you step in. The two-tone color scheme makes it feel really airy, and the piano-black and gunmetal grey plastic trims do liven up the dashboard. The fit and finish have also improved significantly in quality. The steering wheel is smaller than the Vista’s and feels snug when driving. It also has audio controls and telephony controls mounted on it. The speedo and rev counter dials are also very attractive, with a chunky-looking 3D jewelled effect, and a detailed fuel and trip computer nestled between them. The dashboard also has an exclusively designed 5” ConnectNext touchscreen infotainment by Harman which controls the audio system (which you can enjoy in surround sound with 8 speakers) and AC. The screen also displays the ultra sonic rear parking sensor feed. It even has voice control, although it still isn’t completely refined. The boot is as accommodating as a sub 4 meter compact sedan’s can be. There is a decent amount of space for the driver and the passengers. Automatic climate control in the top spec we drove made sure we were comfortable in every way possible. 52

the car a little extra oomph while the eco mode takes it all away. There isn’t a hugely significant difference, but it still is a first in its segment. Maneuvering the vehicle is enjoyable. The electrically assisted power steering developed in association with ZF Lenksysteme who also worked on the Tata Nano is quite impressive. The brakes are a disc and drum combination which does a better job than other Tata cars when it comes to braking. Well designed dynamics ensure that cornering is on par with controllable body roll.

Verdict

There isn’t for instance an armrest, neither at the front nor at the back, which could have also doubled up as a storage area for small things. And there is only one cupholder behind the gear shift lever.

The turbo kicks in around 1,200rpm and that provides torque pretty early in the rev band. You get 90PS of max power at 5,000rpm and 140Nm of torque between 1,750 and 3,500rpm which is par for the segment.

Performance

The 1.2 liter Revotron engine is well powered and balanced and makes the Zest a fun car to drive. Even when the pedal is floored, the onboard traction control system cuts the fuel to prevent wheelspin. The Zest also boasts of three driving modes: Eco, City and Sport. Switching to Sport mode gives

There are both petrol and diesel engine options- XE, XM, XMS, XT and XMA , the last of which is specific to the diesel range and has been mated to the five-speed AMT. We tested the Zest XT. The petrol is an all-new turbocharged unit, displacing 1,193cc.

AUTOLIFE February 2015

Tata has improved leaps and bounds with the Zest. First and foremost, it falls amongst the few cars in the compact sedan segment that manages to look good. And it is most definitely the best styled vehicle to come out of the Tata roster. Inside, which is also equally good, is stuffed to the brim with features. When it comes to driving capabilities, the compact sedan is right there with the competitors in the segment. If there was any doubt as to whether offerings from Tata could come up to par with other consumer focused manufacturers’ products, there isn’t any more. Despite the slump that Tata have been in for the past few years, the Tata Zest catapults the Indian company back into the game. Not only is this a good Tata product, it is a good product overall.

LEGENDS

JEREMY CLARKSON Writer, TV presenter and probably the tallest person in British television, Jeremy Clarkson is as celebrated as he is controversial. His tongue in cheek humor has ruffled a few feathers with media and pressure groups worldwide. But there is no denying that his contribution has completely changed the face of motoring journalism. Born in Doncaster (West Riding of Yorkshire) on the 56

AUTOLIFE February 2015

11th of April 1960, most auto enthusiasts are familiar with the cheeky and opinionated humor that Jeremy Clarkson brings into Top Gear, a British motor show. Before that, his first job was as a travelling salesman for his parent’s business. He later trained as a journalist with the Rotherham Advertiser, before also writing for the Rochdale Observer, Wolverhampton Express and Star, Lincolnshire Life and the Associated Kent Newspapers. In 1984, his first ever venture into the automotive journalism sector kicked off. Jeremy formed the Motoring Press Agency in which, with fellow motoring journalist Jonathan Gill, he conducted road tests for local newspapers and automotive magazines.

Clarkson began writing regularly for Top Gear Magazine, named after the BBC's Top Gear television show, when it launched in 1993. He also writes columns in the tabloid newspaper The Sun, and for the broadsheet newspaper The Sunday Times. Clarkson has written humorous books about cars and several other subjects. Many of his books are collections of articles that he has written for The Sunday Times. On television, his first major role came as a presenter for Top Gear from 27th October 1988. His contribution, mostly after the show was relaunched by BBC in 2002, has helped it become the most widely watched factual television show in the world. The programme is estimated to have around 350 million views per week in 170 different countries. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

CRITICISM AND CONTROVERSIES A charismatic and clever presenter, Clarkson’s opinions and influences has played a massive role in his celebrity status. Often times, this has led him into hot waters with the media and public. Some of his controversial opinions are:

Cultural Mockery and Racism • Clarkson has been very critical of the Special Relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom. He referred to the USA as the United States of Total Paranoia, commenting that one needs a permit to do everything except for purchasing weapons. • During a Top Gear episode broadcast on 13 November 2005, Clarkson, while talking about a Mini design that might be "quintessentially German", made a mock Nazi salute, and made references to the Hitler regime and the German invasion of Poland by setting the GPS system to Poland

• On 12 January 2012, the Indian High Commission lodged a formal complaint with the BBC over the "tasteless" antics of Clarkson's Top Gear Christmas special where he mocked India's culture and people. During the 90-minute special, which was aired twice over the Christmas

Clarkson is quoted as saying "That is a proud moment, but there's a slope on it." as a native crosses the bridge, 'slope' being a pejorative for Asians. • Following the first episode of series 12, Jeremy Clarkson was criticized for making a joke regarding lorry drivers killing prostitutes. • In October 2014, Clarkson attracted controversy when filming the Top Gear: Patagonia Special after driving a Porsche 928 in Argentina with the licence plate H982 FKL, allegedly referring to the Falklands War.

Fun Fact

• Clarkson is unsympathetic to the green movement and has little respect for groups such as Greenpeace—he believes that the "eco-mentalists" are a by-product of the "old trade unionists and CND lesbians" who had found a more relevant cause— but "loves the destination" of environmentalism and believes that people should quietly strive to be more ecofriendly.

JEREMY CLARKSON WAS FIRST TO REACH THE MAGNETIC NORTH POLE IN A CAR. Clarkson hit the headlines when he and fellow presenter James May, became the first men to drive to the magnetic North Pole using a heavily modified Toyota pick-up truck. Richard Hammond attempted to beat them to it by using a traditional sled pulled by dogs, but of course, Clarkson and the car still won.

• Regarding wind farms, he says that in the future, they will be described as "a reminder of the time when mankind temporarily took leave of its senses and decided wind, waves and lashings of tofu could somehow generate enough electricity for the whole planet" • Rregarding global warming: he believes that higher temperatures are not necessarily negative and that anthropogenic carbon dioxide production has a negligible effect on the global climate, but is aware of the negative potential consequences of global warming, saying "let's just stop and think for a moment what the consequences might be. Switzerland loses its skiing resorts? The beach in Miami is washed

away? North Carolina gets knocked over by a hurricane? Anything bothering you yet?" • In 2004, the BBC apologised unreservedly and paid £250 in compensation to a Somerset parish council, after Clarkson damaged a 30-year-old horse-chestnut tree by driving into it to test the strength of a Toyota Hilux.

the controversial one Top Gear Patagonia Special

The Top Gear Patagonia Special takes its presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May to Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina. An area rife with anti-British sentiment, sending the trio who has had a reputation of stirring up controversies might not have been the best of ideas. And, undoubtedly, it was one of the most problematic and controversial specials from Top Gear. Things ended with the crew being driven across the border by an angry mob pelting stones and bricks at them. News that the filming team had been attacked by angry Argentineans hit the news while the crew was still filming, which made for some very dramatic 60

anticipation for the viewers. What sparked off the agitation was what BBC2 insists was complete coincidence. Apparently, the Porsche that Jeremy was driving had a number plate that read ‘H982 FKL’, which some people took as a provocative poke to the Falkland Wars of 1982. Before the dramatic showdown of the two-part programme, a challenge is set for the presenters. The challenge was to travel 1,600 miles from Bariloche in Argentina to the port where the ARA Belgrano set off on its final voyage during the Falklands War. Once there, they were supposed to play a game of car football and “do diplomacy”.

APPARENTLY, THE PORSCHE THAT JEREMY WAS DRIVING HAD A NUMBER PLATE THAT READ ‘H982 FKL’, WHICH SOME PEOPLE TOOK AS A PROVOCATIVE POKE TO THE FALKLAND WARS OF 1982. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

People around the world are obsessed with pickup trucks, a trend some people have difficulty coming to terms with. These fuel guzzling mammoths of a machine aren’t the most nimble on their feet, they’re not the best corner carvers, nor are they renowned for being speed demons. That leaves very little room for justification of the fandom. That is, until you consider the sheer power, functionality and utility these machines possess. Luxury pickups are a great mixture of commercial vehicle versatility and passenger car comfort. Of course, fuel consumption and parking issues do appear to be set backs but let’s overlook that for a moment. Remember that these machines have amazing ground clearance, the ability to power through practically any terrain and unparalleled towing capacities. Now factor in the reality that Nepal is a country rampant with terrains unfathomable to the normal four wheelers, owning a machine that provides the prowess of an off-road machine as well as the luxury of a comfortable cabin seems like a very enjoyable proposition. Now that’s the logic of it. When we got a chance to test drive the Mitsubishi L200

THE MITSUBISHI L200 SPORTERO IS A VERY GOOD PICKUP, BUT IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING THAT DRIVES LIKE A CAR, YOU’RE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE. BUT AS A PICKUP, IT TICKS ALL THE RIGHT BOXES. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Sportero, the only thing we had in mind was the opportunity to unleash the 2.5 liter diesel engine onto some challenging off-road terrain. Eager to test out the promising benchmarks the Japanese moniker is renowned for, we took the pickup for a spin.

Exterior Right off the bat, you can see that the Mitsubishi L200 Sportero is a massive vehicle. Extending to a mighty 5120mm in length the robust size plays the major role in the road presence the pickup commands. Inspired by the Paris-Dakar-Rally-winning Pajero Evolution the front end is rounded with large headlights and a prominent three-pointed Mitsubishi logo on the nose. The back end is mainly taken up by a considerably large carriage space that has a payload allowance of 1120kgs.

Interior Because it is so high off the ground, people on the shorter side of the height scale have trouble clambering into the pickup. However, once inside, the more than accommodating cabin space will appear to be huge. It can comfortably seat up to 5 very large occupants without any problem. The L200 was built for functionality, and can be a proper workhorse when put to the task. However, the interior styling doesn’t give too much away. Equipped with a sporty steering wheel, the center of the dashboard features three prominent knobs to control the air conditioning. Below that is a pretty standard audio system. The center console display is well lit and displayed the outside temperature along with a number of other information. Air vents on either side of the console work well with the overall design of the dash. There are two cup holders in the front, a sizeable glove box compartment and another compartment above the rear view mirror where you can stow away your sunglasses or driving glasses.

Performance The Mitsubishi L200 Sportero is a very good pickup, but if you’re looking for something that drives like a car, you’re 64

Verdict looking in the wrong place. But as a pickup, it ticks all the right boxes. On pitched roads, the Mitsubishi L200 performs well. The 2.5-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder engine produces 134bhp, and bolts pretty avidly for a pickup. It isn’t blistering fast because it isn’t built to be, but it isn’t a slow poke by a long shot. It also has a towing capacity of 2700kgs. Maneuvering the big machine isn’t a daunting task and it responds well to the driver’s direction. It has the smallest turning radius in its class, which makes turning sharp corners and other tight maneuvers much easier tasks than expected. The driving position is also comfortable and high enough to give you a good vantage point of the road. The brake pedal is slightly on the softer side, which can be slightly unsteadying when you’re trying to bring 1885kgs to a halt. But once you get the feel of it, you realize that it does the job.

The carriage at the back is very large and is there to be loaded with a lot of weight. And to withstand the added weight, the rear has an old fashioned leaf spring suspension. But with an empty carriage and stiff springs, the ride can be slightly rattling. There is also a considerable amount of body roll. Once it sets foot on dirt though, it instantly feels at home. The massive ground clearance of 200mm makes sure you don’t have to worry about a thing. Point the L200 at an off-road stretch you feel can’t be conquered and it will prove you wrong. The 4WD is ready for action at a blink of an eye when things seem a tad too difficult. If you’re looking for some serious off roading, the low range 4WD option is at your disposal.

POINT THE L200 AT AN OFF-ROAD STRETCH YOU FEEL CAN’T BE CONQUERED AND IT WILL PROVE YOU WRONG.

AUTOLIFE February 2015

The Mitsubishi L200 is the most popular in its segment in UK, taking up almost a third of their market, which says a lot about its popularity. The Sportero is styled well and comes very close to giving you an SUV experience. However, at its heart, it is a commercial machine, a workhorse with functionality as its prime focus. It makes easy work of off road terrain and has enough payload and towing capacity for any situation one can face. It will get you where you need to go and judging by the reputation of Mitsubishi, reliability should also be a strong point. So, for adventurous overland travelers, the L200 is a very good choice because the machine wants to work rather than go out on leisurely drives. It can also fare very well when used for commercial purposes. A sensible and practical purchase for people who will plan on using it for the right reasons, the price tag is not shocking. As it is in most cases, chances are that purchasing this machine won’t be purpose focused. Luckily, it is also designed and styled to please the style conscious buyer. The performance of the machine is also capable of satisfying those who crave an SUV experience (to some extent), so it definitely helps kill two birds with one stone.

Here are some of the expected launches and reveals from multinational auto-hawks to arrive and dazzle at Geneva.

Audi R8: The second-generation R8 supercar will be an entirely new model. The new R8 will receive laser headlights as an option. Sadly, in most cases these violations lead to road accidents, the numbers of which are escalating. On top of that, our narrow roads, unmanaged parking and footpath businesses make it extremely tough for anyone to have a safe and pleasant riding/driving experience here. “The change should start from within us,” states Mr. Gyanendra Prasad Dhungana, the CEO of Nepal Bangladesh Bank, when asked how the poor driving conditions can be improved here. “Roads are constructed for the convenience of every citizen living in a country. If all of us can exercise equal rights, we must realise that we also have equal responsibilities upon it. Follow the rules and put an effort to make the conditions better, one day you will surely be able to make a big positive difference,” he further suggests. I never felt like motorcycles really suited me. AL: Hatchbacks, Sedans or SUVs? GPD: Initially, I enjoyed driving Hatchbacks but now I like SUVs better. AL: Which is the first car/bike you had a go on? GPD: It was a Toyota hatchback. AL: When did you first start driving? GPD: I started riding motorcycles at the age of 20. I rode my Yamaha RX for two years, but soon after, I switched to driving cars. AL: Is there a driver behind the wheels of your car or is it you who takes charge? GPD: I like driving so I’m usually taking control. However, if I have to attend a party or take my family for long drives, I always make sure we have our driver with us. AL: Till date, on which car or bike have you had the best ever riding/driving experience? GPD: I loved driving the Toyota Corolla. AL: Your most memorable moment on a car or bike? GPD: About fifteen years ago, I had a major accident in our Toyota Corolla when I and my family were driving to Manakamana Temple. An oncoming bus smashed into the car I was in. It totalled the Toyota Corolla we were in but none of us were harmed. The amazing thing is, we rode back home in the same car, though smashed, nothing had happened to its engine.

AL: If you could wish for one automobile marquee to have a showroom here in Nepal, not yet present, which would it be? GPD: It has to be the Ferrari. AL: Where do you think is the best destination to drive/ride to in Nepal? GPD: The road from Muglin to Pokhara is great to drive on. Apart from that, it have to be the Banepa-Bardibas Highway. AL: In your opinion, what is the worst thing about driving in Nepal? GPD: The wretched condition of the roads and the lack of proper execution of traffic rules make the driving experience pathetic in Nepal. These two problems result in traffic jams which makes it very difficult for the riders/drivers to have a pleasant experience while driving/riding here. AL: If you were given complete control of the country, what changes would you bring about in the automotive scene of Nepal? GPD: First of all, I would seize all the licenses and appeal for re-licensing. I am sure that 80 percent of the riders and drivers would fail the test. Next, I would also make sure that stricter laws were set for the Public Vehicle drivers. Another would be the completion of the road widening and construction project. I feel like the project is not successfully completed especially because of lack of coordination between the ministries. If transportation ministry completes the work in an area, in less than a week or so, the KUKL dig pot-holes in the newly constructed roads for their purpose. I would definitely fix this if I was given the control.

If everybody starts following their responsibilities, there are high chances that one day the whole condition will get better.

AUTOLIFE INTERVIEWS

AL: What are your expectations from the Nepali market? JO: Although only 0.5% of the total Nepalese population owns an automobile, Nepal has been a key market for us and it has been our endeavour to bring class-leading products for the consumers in this country. Despite the market being small, it has the potential to grow. This is promising for any automobile brand. We at TATA Motors would like to cater to this vast untapped segment with state-of-art products and diverse product portfolio. To attract and build a profitable customer base in an economically challenging market environment, we have implemented an integrated approach to offer stateof-the-art products and diversified product portfolio. We are very confident that even though in this short span that we are here we have reached top three positions in Nepal.

TATA MOTORS WANTS TO BE AMONG THE TOP THREE PLAYERS IN EVERY MARKET IT IS PRESENT IN: JOHNNY OOMMEN Johnny Oommen, Head of International Business - Passenger Vehicles at Tata Motors Limited, was recently in Nepal to launch Tata’s new compact sedan, the Zest. In a chat with Autolife Nepal, Johnny talked about the evolution of Tata Motors’ new design philosophy HORIZONEXT, the plans for Nepali auto market, and the expectations on Zest sedan as the company begins its second journey in the highlycompetitive Indian Automobile Industry. Excerpts:

72

AUTOLIFE February 2015

AL: Is the Zest a game changer for TATA Motors? JO: The Zest was launched in a very competitive segment, but look at the reception. The demand for the Zest has been far more that what was forecasted. This was one of the main reasons why Zest saw a delayed launch in Nepal as we couldn’t fill the supply constraint of the Indian market. The Zest is now manufactured at two plants in Pune to meet this gap. The Zest is important for us for a couple of reasons. First, it is the first outcome of our HORIZONEXT strategy and this is perhaps the first time ever that a completely new engine was launched by an Indian company. Secondly,

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

it has brought a new set of customers to us -- primarily the young buyers who have come from the petrol version. Actually, this is a matter of pride for us. AL: How differently is TATA Motors approaching the sales of Zest? JO: The Zest is seeing good demand in India and we hope to reciprocate the same here. We are confident that our expertise, coupled with the strong presence of Sipradi Trading Pvt. Ltd across Nepal, will help the Zest reach a wide customerbase. In Sipradi, we have got a good team aligned in a right direction and focused on consumers. Sipradi provides the best customer experience in Nepal – from vehicle purchase to aftermarket service support. We are actually gearing up our extensively trained sales people. We are implementing some customer- focused marketing strategies to address the needs and meet the demands of the customers. The Zest has its own core strengths; a 1.2-litre turbocharged Revotron petrol engine and 29 segment first- features. These features make the Zest an appealing vehicle to the masses. We are confident that it will delight our consumers with its design, driving pleasure and great connectivity features. AL: As a carmaker, how much has TATA Motors evolved over the last few years? JO: While there have been some praiseworthy improvements over the past few years we were still not able to cater to the individual

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

customers because our cars were mostly purchased by fleet-operators. We knew we had to change this. We wanted to target the personal buyers. So, two years back we launched a company-wide initiative called ‘HORIZONEXT’, an umbrella initiative under which there were four pillars of product development – state-of-the art products, world-class manufacturing plants, enriching customer’s purchase experience and consistent quality of service. There are three key pillars in the product development launched under the HORIZONEXT strategy: DriveNext - a car which should be exciting to drive and world-class; DesigNext -they should be attractive to look at; and the third is ConnectNext -- they should have a great infotainment system. The Zest is the first product of this strategy and we have worked very hard to achieve excellence in every aspects of the Zest. The whole idea was to blend all these elements together to bring disruptive innovation to car-buyers. Under the HORIZONEXT strategy, Tata Motors wants to be among the top three players in every market it is present in.

AL: Any new products this year? JO: I can tell you that we have a series of products lined-up for Nepal. The Zest is the first example and the Nepalese customers can look forward to the Tata Bolt and Nano Twist by the year-end. AL: And finally, what car do you drive, and do you have a favourite car? JO: Right now, I drive an Aria, but I am looking to upgrade to the Zest. As a favourite, I would still say the Nano. I really love it.

“While there have been some praiseworthy improvements over the past few years, we were still not able to cater to the individual customers because our cars were mostly purchased by fleetoperators. We knew we had to change this.”

AL: What’s next for TATA Motors? Can we expect a compact SUV in the near future? JO: We have adopted an aggressive strategy of two products every year aligned with the company’s HORIZONEXT strategy. It’s too early for me to comment, but yes, there’s definitely a compact SUV.

Verdict Commencal El Camino is equipped in doing what it does best - cruise along light terrain. Tansen Ultra 2015 SAVE THE DATE FOR A SPECTACULAR OUTDOOR MEET LIKE NONE OTHER, WHERE MOUNTAIN BIKERS AND RUNNERS BLAZE THROUGH THE OLD TANSEN TOWN. TEXT AND PHOTOS BY ANUJ ADHIKARY

The quaint hillstation of Tansen is gearing up for some thunderous trail action once again! Organized by Dharohar Adventures and Gnarly, Tansen Ultra 2015 will see three flagship races: Downhill, Ultra Trail Running and for first time in Nepal - Urban Crosscountry. The three-day event is scheduled for April 30th and ready to bring more than 150 participants, including professionals and amateurs alike. Whether you don’t mind a 12-foot drop or prefer to call yourself an enthusiastic walker for a noble cause, Ultra Tansen with ten different categories has something in store for everyone! Further, a hefty prize money for winners - possibly the largest sum for a one-day event - is a tempting icing on the cake, and the 5K Charity Fun Run definitely gets you karma points. “We are overwhelmed by the response we’ve received from lovely people of Tansen,” says race director Shyam Limbu of Gnarly MTB. “With their encouragement and support, Gnarly is determined to make Palpa the most happening destination for recreational outdoor activities as well as competitive sports.”

“Palpa is not a stranger to outdoor sports anymore,” maintains Subash Kakshapati, Director of Dharohar Adventures and a Tansen resident. He adds, “The entire town came to life in the Urban Downhill race in 2014 and people since have embraced such outdoor events wholeheartedly. These promote not just sports but also help establish Palpa as a prominent adventure destination.” Moreover, a short 5K charity race in Tansen Ultra hopes to commemorate the great deeds of social activists striving to empower underserved women and youth. By supporting their training fund, Gnarly and Dharohar Adventures seek to develop more female professionals in the line of adventure, which currently sees next to no women guides and racers, especially in cycling, running and trekking. The Charity run is open for the entire town of Tansen and visiting spectators; of all age and gender from all walks of like to give back to the society. The trails have been marked and Palpalis are ready to host what is shaping up as the most awesome way to start 2072. Head over to Tansen this May and show the crew how it’s done! Visit www.gnarlybiking.com/tansen or call Anuj Adhikary (9803 661496) for more info.
