Hello Dear Readers, It’s that time of the year again where we welcome the Nepali New Year in probably the best way there is, the famed Enfield Rendezvous and Poker Run. We participated in the 7th edition, our fourth time and did what we do best: rolled with the thunder and had a hell of a good time. Flip through to our epic road trip where over 300 Royal Enfields made their way to Pokhara to celebrate the beginning of the year 2072 B.S. More on the two wheels front, we got our hands on the effervescent XR 125L from Honda. A legendary series from Honda, we put the small XR to the test and sought out to see if size really did matter. Fans of the dual sport category of motorcycling, the feisty machine brought a smile to our face. We also have on a beauty out of Saurav Jyoti’s garage. The tame Honda CB 600 F3 1997 customized into a mean Café Fighter that turns a few heads to say the least. Now, onto the four wheels. Hyundai is a moniker that has been in the Nepali market for quite some time and has been crowned top dog a number of times before. However, competition has stiffened and the top tier seemed to be becoming increasingly illusive for the Korean contender in recent times. And at times like these, strong brands bring out their best. Hyundai have come out with the face lifted Hyundai Verna. Its predecessor’s fluidic designs took the market by storm and the new Verna is all set to follow suit. Our second test ride is the Kia Soul, which we took to the hills of Nagarkot to help us unwind. And it did the trick. Not just another sheep in the herd, the Soul brings a fresh new touch to the crossover market. There’s a lot more to go through in this issue. Make sure you go through our coverage of the FIA Regional Congress Asia Pacific as well as the Auto Shanghai 2015. Until next time. Cheers.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro General Motors has finally pulled the wraps off of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. The new Camaro is available in threeengine configurations – a 2.0L Turbo, a 6.2L LT1 Turbo and 3.6L V6. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine makes 275 hp and 399 Nm at 3000 rpm. It also has direct injection, variable valve timing, and uses aluminium components. The naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 makes 335 hp and 385 Nm has direct injection, variable valve timing, and cylinder deactivation. All of the engines are mated with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Inside the car, the Camaro gets a new instrument

panel. It blends analogue elements with an available eight-inch centre screen that shows performance, entertainment, and navigation information. Another eightinch screen is in the centre with the Chevy MyLink system. Designers also integrated the heating and cooling controls into the vents. Drivers can tailor the shifting, steering, and chassis settings via a new driver mode selector, which is mounted in the centre console. Also new is something called Interior Spectrum Lighting, which allows for 24 different ambient lighting effects on the dash, door panels, and centre console. The new Camaro sheds more than 200 pounds compared with the outgoing

car. The only fifth-gen carryover pieces are the Chevy bowtie emblem and the SS badge. The car rides on a new multi-link MacPherson strut front suspension with a double-pivot design that makes the electric power steering more linear than the current car’s setup. In the rear, the suspension is a new five-link independent setup. Brembo brakes are available throughout the line and are standard on the SS. The SS also gets Magnetic Ride Control for the first time, which adjusts the damper settings to improve the car’s ride.

The Vice-President of Nepal, Parmananda Jha, appreciated the fact that Nepal had the honour to hold this Congress and that it has proven its ability to organize such a historic event bringing together participants and delegates from different countries. He welcomed all the delegates and participants with a small speech where he talked about the registration of NASA into National Sports Council in 2008 A.D. which marked the formal establishment of motorsports in Nepal. Road fatalities had been an issue in Nepal from the very beginning, but the founding of NASA brought about a significant increase in road safety initiatives creating much needed awareness about these concerns. Welcoming representatives and delegates from 14 countries in Kathmandu, the FIA President Jean Todt shared his ideas on developing motorsports in this region. KIA SOUL

36

AUTOLIFE June 2015

www.autolife.com.np

In the cut throat competition of the crossover automobile market, the Kia Soul appears to be a calm contender unintimidated by the ferocity of the competition and not trying too hard to fit in. In fact, the Kia Soul stands out from the crowd. Also, it is hard to categorize it into a particular segment such as a hatchback, wagon or an SUV. Being different though, has helped the Kia Soul strip away from a segment that is teetering on the boundaries of monotomy. This one is off beat, unorthodox in style and not too hard on the eyes either. Being feature packed is an added bonus as well. It certainly got our attention, so we took its 1.6 liter diesel variant out for a spin to the beautiful hills of Nagarkot where we took the opportunity to relax and do some soul searching of our own. www.autolife.com.np

AUTOLIFE June 2015 37

EXTERIOR The new Kia Soul isn’t the generic crossover every other brand is dishing out. Its boxy design doesn’t follow the norm to the tee, but once you get used to its uniqueness it is just a matter of time before you start really loving it. The head designers at Kia have been able to infuse a sense of personality into the Soul, which is evident from its individualistic styling. The front end sports a small chrome lined grille between bold HID headlamps and fog lamps on the front bumper. The power-folding side mirrors with integrated LED turn signal indicators are very cohesively integrated into the boxy design of the soul. It has a dropped roofline which helps in making the vehicle look less boxy and

38

AUTOLIFE June 2015

gives the Soul the smallest of hints of an JEEP-ish appearance. The Soul has a straight back look with a number of design features integrated into it. It plays with dual tones instead of one monochromatic look. The black in the bottom of the rear end lifts the vehicle up a little bit and gives it a chunkier look. Brake lights and indicators are large and placed on either edges of the rear between which is a singular rear privacy glass pane. INTERIORS Inside, the Kia Soul has a very spacious cabin along with plenty of storage in the back and under the floor. Despite an edgy avant-garde look on the outside, it is very easy to get in and out of. The doors are large and seats are slightly higher.

www.autolife.com.np

The interiors are very well put-together with quality materials. It has upgraded cloth upholstery, a fold-down rear-seat armrest and a front seat center armrest with storage. The feature packed Kia Soul has three-mode driver-selectable steering settings, air-conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel (with audio controls), a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and a sixspeaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface. PERFORMANCE The 126bhp 1.6 liter diesel engine that we were driving was smooth and powerful with plenty of power in low and medium revs which meant that we didn’t have to change gears all too often

www.autolife.com.np

AUTOLIFE June 2015 39

when driving around town. Its six speed manual transmission is smooth and features a hill start assist function. The engine feels refined and despite its tall boxy shape it has very good body control. It is very good around bends and keeps itself planted. So, if you want a compact SUV but could do without the all wheel drive, this is the feature packed four-wheeler that you’d want on your list. And it can turn a few heads too with its unique design. Certainly something you’d want in your compact SUV/ wagon or crossover.

Mr. Atul Shahane, Head of Exports, Nissan Motors India, was recently in Nepal to launch Datsun’s compact family wagon, the Datsun GO+. The GO+ is Datsun’s second model for Nepal in a span of one year. In the meantime, we caught up with Mr Shahane to talk about Datsun’s performance and plans for the Nepali market.

AL: How has the overall response of the Datsun brand been in Nepal? AS: The Nepali automobile market has grown over the last couple of years. The Datsun GO which was launched in 2015 is already one of the best products in this segment. We were really surprised from the response and queries we received towards the Datsun brand because the awareness and affinity to the Datsun brand has grown sharply in this short span of time. The customers are satisfied and our dealer (Pioneer MotoCorp Pvt. Ltd) is doing a great job. AL: Please tell us more about the newly launched Go+ and some of its appealing features. AS: After the success of the GO, our next logical step was to bring in the GO+. The GO+ is India’s only compact family wagon and it is doing reasonably well in the Indian market. The vehicle has opened up a completely new segment of sub-4 meter ‘Compact Family Wagon’ segment in the country. In sub-4 meters, you can have 50% more space than any 4-meter sedan or seven seats. Regarding the features, the Datsun GO+ is an extremely practical and affordable product that offers 347 litres of boot space with the third row of seats down. This flexibility of the extra third row seats makes it easy for families to have ample room for passengers, bags and other cargo www.autolife.com.np

through smart configuration. Safety is extremely important for us and the vehicle meets all the required safety standards. Keeping safety in mind, Datsun has offered driver side airbag as an option on the top-of-theline variant. Similarly, the other impressive feature of the Datsun GO+ is the economical mileage of 20.62kmpl. Other appealing features like – MDS(Mobile Docking Station), spacious passenger side storage, door pockets, followme-headlamps(first-in-class), intuitive wiping system, first-inclass spinal support seats and the best-in-class turning radius of 4.6m makes the GO+ an excellent value for money proposition. AL: What are your expectations from the GO+ in the Nepalese market? AS: The Datsun GO+ is our second model for Nepal in a span of one year which alone speaks our commitment to the Nepalese market. The Go+ is more inclined as a family vehicle for us and targeted towards aspiring and rising middle class of Nepal. This compact family wagon ensures more comfort, flexibility and practicality. The stylish and distinctive body style of the Datsun GO+ backed by Nissan’s technological expertise makes the GO+ more attractive for Nepalese customers. We want to build a positive

customer sentiment because we have worked hard to build an affordable car. We hope the Datsun GO+ realizes our effort in recognizing the needs and fulfilling the demands of Nepalese customers. AL: And, what about the potential competitors? AS: We are not looking at any competition in this segment because this is an independent niche. But, we believe it has a very attractive styling to what the competition can bring. At this moment, we want to fulfill the customers’ requirements as the Nepalese customers also look for cost of ownership, predictability of ownership experience and ownership cost. AL: At last, what new products can we expect from Datsun in the coming years? AS: Yes, we are working on it. I cannot disclose any information but our third product maybe a micro SUV.

“The Datsun GO+ is our second model for Nepal in a span of one year which alone speaks our commitment to the Nepalese market. “ AUTOLIFE June 2015 43

THE

FACELIF T NEW HYUNDAI VERNA 4S WORDS: AUTOLIFE TEAM | PHOTO: BIBHAS MAHARJAN SUWAL

The Verna, when it first came out in 2006, was a next-gen replacement for the Accent. Back then it was just another sedan. By 2009 the Verna boasted of segment first features such as rear disc brakes, driver armrest, diesel + automatic combination (in 2009). Despite this, the Verna did not make a massive impact in the market. What really put the Verna on the map is when it came out as the fourth generation Verna, the one we rightfully refer to as the Fluidic one.

www.autolife.com.np

AUTOLIFE June 2015 47

This Verna created quite a stir, and might just be the milestone where Hyundai broke out of the comfort zone they had found in their immensely popular hatchbacks. The Fluidic Verna boasted many segment-first features such as 6 airbags, a reversing camera, keyless entry & go, electric folding mirrors and more. Needless to say, the Verna managed to establish itself as one of the top dogs in the C2 sedan segment. However, when Honda released their 4th Gen City and Maruti came out with the highly acclaimed Ciaz, Verna definitely felt their position in the pecking order become shaky. To stay in the game, Hyundai have brought about a facelift to their worthy contender and come out with the 4S Verna. EXTERIOR

Hyundai rarely disappoint when it comes to aesthetics, so it was not a big surprise to have in front of us one of the most handsome cars in the market. The 4S Verna retains

the fluidic design cues that helped make it so popular in the first place. The swept back projector headlight clusters now get a strip of LED running lights that pass-off as daytime running lights quiet easily. On the bumper are boomerang shaped fog lamps. The hexagonal mouth has been replaced with a distinctive twin-slat chrome grill and trapezoidal air dam. Subtle creases run through the top of the hood and strong body lines blend well into the rest of its body. A swooping roofline, side mirrors with integrated LED indicators and diamond cut alloy wheels with chrome handle bars help retain the solid designs of the Verna’s side profile. Large LED like tail lights with integrated indicators give personality to the rear. The rear reflectors similarly shaped to the front fog lamps and placed on the bumper. The exhaust has been tucked away underneath the car, so it is no longer visible like its chrome tipped counterpart in the previous Verna.

INTERIORS

As good as it is from the outside, the new Verna retains its appeal with its interiors that was well established with the previous edition. The two-tone dashboard carries on unchanged and you still get the same high level of fit and finish. And the new Verna is filled to the brim with features. The steering wheel has adjustable reach as well as rake. Rain sensing auto wipers are a new addition. The headlamps are automatic and come equipped with the followme-home feature. Verna 4S has an engine start/stop button which starts the engine if you’re pressing down on the clutch. Press it without depressing the clutch you enter audio/ ‘ignition on’ mode.

AS GOOD AS IT IS FROM THE OUTSIDE, THE NEW VERNA RETAINS ITS APPEAL WITH ITS INTERIORS THAT WAS WELL ESTABLISHED WITH THE PREVIOUS EDITION.

There is no touch screen controls but it does come equipped with 1GB internal memory to store music. The head-unit has been upgraded to feature phone book and call log access. The reverse parking display comes on the inside mirror with red,

yellow and green lines indicating a distance of 50 cm, 100 cm and 300 cm respectively. A new 'Ergo' lever has been introduced which allows the back seat passenger to push the front passenger seat all the way forward to enhance legroom. PERFORMANCE

The engine and gearbox options include a 105bhp, 1.4-litre petrol engine (with a five-speed manual), a 121bhp, 1.6 petrol (with a five-speed manual or four-speed auto), a 89bhp, 1.4 diesel (with a six-speed manual) and lastly, a 126bhp, 1.6 diesel (with a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic). Depress the clutch and push the start button to get the refined engine to start. The drive is smooth and power delivery is linear in nature. Mid range power is decent which makes it great for overtaking. On the open road, the engine effortlessly picks up speed and you can reach the triple digits very quickly. Maneuvering is easy thanks

to the Verna’s responsive steering with good feedback, but you will need to put in minor inputs on the steering to keep it on course. Although the rear discs have been eliminated, the Verna 4S does a decent job of bringing the vehicle to a stop. Also, ABS has been made standard, although it does tend to kick in too early at times. They have also tweaked the suspension hardware to make it ride & handle better. It takes up the bumps well and even deals satisfactorily with larger potholes. The Verna also takes onto corners confidently and won’t have the driver nervously gripping at the steering wheel. VERDICT Verna’s strong suit has always been its aesthetic appeal. The previous edition did land a few criticisms regarding its driving quality at high speeds and light steering controls. Hyundai have listened to the criticism and stepped it up with the Hyundai Verna 4S. The steering seems much more confident and high speed driving is more refined and stable. Add to that the plush cabin and feature laden facilities and it makes the Hyundai Verna 4S a well rounded car that is up to the competition.

The Director at Jyoti Group of Companies and Chairman of Syakar Trading Company (the authorized distributor of Honda bikes and cars in Nepal) Saurabh has had an inclination towards two wheelers. Owning some of the most exclusive wheels in the country, he has always been keen on putting his own touch to his motorcycles. Now, he has taken his passion and took it a huge leap forward, with his new venture: SJ Moto. Their first product is this Café Fighter inspired by Huge Design’s take on the CBR 1000 RR. After getting no response from Huge Designs, Saurabh took it upon himself to assemble a team and customize the machine tyre to exhaust in Nepal. Now, if only the government would get off their high horses and assess the potential of this industry, maybe we could see even more customized beauties on the streets of Nepal.

AUTOLIFE TEST RIDE

TINY PRANCER HONDA XR 150L WORDS & PHOTOS: AUTOLIFE TEAM

58

AUTOLIFE June 2015

www.autolife.com.np

Dual Sports motorcycling is very different from street motorcycling, and dare we say it, more adventurous. Both schools of riding has its thrills but for riders who won’t stand the terrain getting in the way of their travels, dual sports motorcycling will always get the upper hand. Honda has been proficient in producing some of the best off road and dual sports motorcycles. Their XL and XR series stand on the highest pedestal in Nepal, and for good reason too. A capability the Japanese have proven time and again.

www.autolife.com.np

AUTOLIFE June 2015 59

One of the newest offerings from Honda in the segment that looked promising was the Honda XR 150L. It’s not the biggest dog out there, but we know not to rule out a competitor based just on its size. That meant we would be putting the XR 150L to the test. STYLING The XR 150 is one of the newest additions to Honda’s mid range dual sport category. And it’s safe to say, it’s quite the looker. The smaller 125cc XR received a slight bit of criticism on its styling and Honda have taken this to heart and made the necessary improvements. Now, the XR 150L has an extremely appealing façade. The headlights of the XR 150L are superbly designed, a very significant difference from the 125 and very similar to the one on the splendid CRF 250L. The front fender is also sleeker, once again helping the front end of the XR150L to hold a striking resemblance to the aforementioned CRF 250L.

60

AUTOLIFE June 2015

Plastic decals provide the XR 150L with its motocross styling as well as save you the pains of dented metal when you inevitably push the limits with this fun motorcycle. A drilled 240mm disc up front and a 110mm drum at the back take care of stopping duties, while the long-travel suspension eats up the nastiest of terrain. Although styled as a motocross motorcycle, the average rider will have little trouble planting their feet on the ground when atop the XR 150L. Plastic bodywork helps keep the weight down to 129kg. An electric starter combines with maintenance-free digital electronic ignition to ensure quick and easy starts. The front forks are fitted with fork boots which means that they stay nice and dry. Mudprotecting suspension gators and mud flaps as standard also mean less maintenance and less messy riders. The XR 150L is built on a rugged, semi-double-cradle steel tube frame. The rear has its

www.autolife.com.np

standard ever-present rear carrier for transporting light loads and essential equipment, and chunky off-road rubber. PERFORMANCE Agreed, the motorcycle did its part for looking up to the job of tearing up terrains, but it was necessary to ascertain that it was indeed up to the task. In order to test its dual purpose capabilities, we took the XR150L to the less travelled roads of Godavari. Right off the bat, you can tell that this machine is a certified workhorse. On the tarmac it has a significant amount of punch and will keep the rider grounded. It provides a pretty decent vantage point and begs to be flicked through traffic and hammered through potholes. The suspension is plush and provides adequate feedback and minimal brunt over rough terrain. Taking corners is a breeze and the purpose built tires ensure that you are planted to the ground with enough traction. The smooth running single-cylinder, four-stroke powerplant gives decent power and it takes up speed fairly quickly and maintains composure as you push it through straights.

RIGHT OFF THE BAT, YOU CAN TELL THAT THIS MACHINE IS A CERTIFIED WORKHORSE.

www.autolife.com.np

AUTOLIFE June 2015 61

However, the rugged and reliable air-cooled engine is tuned for low-tomidrange performance, rather than out-and-out top speed. That’s why it really comes to life when you get off the tarmac and take things offroad. Pliant suspensions come into play when you take the XR through the dirt ridden trails. It has excellent hill climbing ability thanks to its torquey engine that despite its size proves to be very capable. Point it to a rough terrain you think it can’t make through and it will surprise you. It provides adequate traction through the dirt and powers through obstacles. The slick shifting 5 speed gearbox is smooth. The engine also features a new balancer shaft to reduce vibration for much smoother running, a real bonus when you spend hours in the saddle. VERDICT The Honda XR150L is clearly not a bike that you’d see Travis Pastrana back flipping. What it is though, is a very capable dual purpose motorcycle that has a small engine but packs enough energy to get you where you want. It could have used a little more oomph but there is a totally different segment available for that. But this is a mid range commuter that can do its share of work when it is asked to do so. It returns a pretty decent fuel economy and bears the Honda brand that is well known for its reliability. Combine it with its go anywhere capability and the XR150L might just be the perfect motorcycle for Nepal.

AUTOLIFE ROAD TRIP

It’s Thundering Time! 7TH ENFIELD RENDEZVOUS AND POKER RUN WORDS & PHOTOS: AUTOLIFE TEAM

66

AUTOLIFE June 2015

www.autolife.com.np

Come thunder, come rain, the Poker Run rides on. Sounds like something you’d see painted on to the back of a lorry or local bus but it fits in really well with the 7th Enfield Rendezvous and Poker Run. It has become customary for us to welcome the Nepali New Year with Sacred Summit’s Enfield Rendezvous and Poker Run, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. This year too, we slipped into our boots and rode on the trusty Enfield Classic 500 (generously given to us by Sacred Summit), and prepared to bring in the new year in style. Familiar with sunny skies that preceded every other lineup of Enfields in the previous years of our participation, the gloomy skies of 13th April 2015 was certainly different. The NASA Bullet Club was where the thunder ride would commence but the morning skies refused to clear and the overcast morning threatened to pour down upon us. Chhedup Bomzan, a certified badass and Poker Run veteran, attempted to put us at ease. “The third Poker Run had us drenched before we even reached Nagdhunga; this isn’t that bad.” Clad in knee length shorts and crocs, Chhedup didn’t appear to be worried much about anything. Patrick Wilson’s voice www.autolife.com.np

over the microphone cut our conversation short and we made our way inside where a sizeable group awaited the arrival of the rest of the riders. We were amongst the early birds to get there, but soon enough more riders started coming accompanied with increasingly loud rumbles. Traffic slowed down to admire the lineup of extravagant two wheelers, exclusively consisting of Royal Enfields (and the odd Harley Davidson Forty Eight), parked on the side of the road. Once the majority of the riders, diverse in terms of gender and nationality, were present, Patrick went about the briefing of the event and safety guides. Alongside him were Uday Rana (Member of the Constituent Assembly), a member from the Ministry of Tourism and the DSP of Nepal Police who put in their two cents and wished all of the riders well. This year the number of participants had significantly increased, amassing close to 400 individuals, 200+ Enfields from 16 Nepali Clubs, 18 Indian clubs and 1 club from Bhutan. What this meant was this Poker Run would be bigger and louder than ever before. An honorable mention goes out to Lia Grimanis, because any woman who can pull a 17000lb vehicle

for a 100ft is worth a mention. Founder of ‘Up With Women’, the Canadian born broke the Guinness World Record to raise awareness for women and girls at risk and to inspire women to realize they are stronger than they think they are. Point well made.

After snacking on some questionably yellow instant noodles and spicy puri tarkari we muscled our way through the crowd of parked Enfields to our own to get a head start so we could get a few good snaps.

AUTOLIFE June 2015

After a final few registration processes, all of the participants picked out their first poker cards and filled up on boxed breakfasts provided. Soon it was time to set off on the 7th Poker Run. Tiny droplets of rain cascaded onto our visors, but it’d take much more to deter the thunder ride that was already on its way. Rumbling through with police escorting us up till Nagdhunga, we assembled at this first pit stop. While waiting for the rest of the riders to arrive, we caught up with Dorji Tshering from Bhutan Dragons Motorcycle Club, Thimpu and Ranabir Roy Bardhan from the Kolkata Eastern Bulls Bullet Club. Although we didn’t have too long of a time to chat, they had nothing but good things to say about Nepal and the Poker Run. That got

our spirits high and we were off once again. As always, Pramod Goofy Shrestha was leading the pack onto the peculiarly foggy 20km of winding roads that led to Naubise. We regrouped once again at a highway restaurant to pick up our second hand of the Poker Cards. After snacking on some questionably yellow instant noodles and spicy puri tarkari we muscled our way through the crowd of parked Enfields to our own to get a head start so we could get a few good snaps. That, and the fact that the highway would be opening up and we didn’t want to be stuck behind the group. Because the number of riders had significantly increased in comparison to past years, there were more crew members deployed to maintain a certain amount of decorum in order to ensure safety. On those grounds, Sacred Summits did a splendid job and the foolhardiness was kept to a minimum. The ride continued till Mugling, where a tasty lunch (courtesy of YETI AIRLINES) awaited us. www.autolife.com.np

On the way, we witnessed an unfortunate fellow rider getting sploshed with a plastic bag full of vomit. Thankfully he had his raincoat on and the plastic bag did not completely disintegrate on impact leaving only a short trail of sick on him. This taught us a valuable lesson to never ride too close to a public bus. We had little time to get the revolting images out of our heads because it was almost lunch time. Famished from the ride, we inhaled our rice and mutton curry with second and third helpings. And as expected, lethargy set in almost immediately. Despite the gloomy skies, the weather was still pretty warm and humid which made the prospects of a short quiet slumber all the more tempting. However, we had more exciting things on hand, like the third draw of our Poker Hands. Now, on the previous two hands we had pulled two queens which gave us pretty good odds of getting a decent hand. With our fingers crossed, we pulled out our third hand praying to the gambling gods for another queen. Sadly, the two of clubs www.autolife.com.np

peeked through and we left it at that. Back on our motorcycle, we fired up the engine and headed towards our next pit stop that was 35kms before Pokhara. The weather began to clear up and the sun peeked through the clouds as we thundered through the open tarmac. At the Akala Highway Restaurant, Manapang, the convoy regrouped and enjoyed their free Red Bulls while waiting for their turn to pull out their fourth Poker card. We weren’t particularly hopeful about our own hand though, because someone already had a pretty good hand that our two of a kind fell far short of. Nevertheless, the Poker hand is only part of the fun and we still were looking forward to the New Year’s party, the charity event and motorcycle show the next day. Upon arriving to Pokhara, our fleet was welcomed with Tibetan garlands and tika. Prolific revving by the riders made sure we got everyone’s attention, which might not have been necessary considering the fact that there were close to 400

Enfields conquering the Lake Side of Pokhara. After the bikes were parked for the night at the spacious ground nearby, we were allotted our rooms and given some time to refresh ourselves for the gala New Year Eve celebration in the evening. The celebrations began in the hotel premises where the alcohol flowed freely, good food was in abundance and loud live music got everyone in the

mood. The party was further livened up with the free flow of alcoholic beverages for the participants – Nepal Ice Beer from Sungold Brewery and Ruslan Vodka from Himalayan Distillery. Our memory does get slightly hazy here but we do vaguely remember Sagar Naral (from Smokin Joe’s Motorcycle Rentals) and Patrick Wilson performing on stage, talking to the cute girl riding the Harley and a drunk fellow who took off articles of clothing as the night progressed. Happy New Year!! Let’s fast forward to the next morning where we clambered up the stairs of Landmark hotel to a breakfast buffet that awaited us. This is when the sheer number of participants of the 7th Enfield Rendezvous and Poker Run really sunk in. A long queue led to the buffet where waiters frantically worked to replenish the depleting piles of food. The chef in charge of omelets worked two stoves. Tables 70

were filled with hungry people working their way through the pile on their plates. We took our place in line and piled on our own plates being slightly more lenient towards the pancakes, choley and sausages. It was important to regain our energy from last night’s exertions because we would be going to participate in the charity event that Sacred Summits organized every Poker Run. From past experience, we could tell that the ride would be fun and adventurous. However, it was difficult to prepare for the road that awaited us. It has been customary for the Sacred Summits to help schools that were located in rural areas and this time we were headed to the Shree Devi Primary School in Dandagaon. The road to the school took us from the trendy Lake Side of Pokhara to its barely touched hills. It was a pretty challenging trail that demanded a lot from the riders. Luckily, the 500cc www.autolife.com.np

mill of the Royal Enfield Classic was up to the task; our buttocks on the other hand, could have used a little respite. 15 minutes before we arrived to the school, we were told that the road was not accessible via the van that carried the school supplies we would be donating. So each of us carried what we could on our motorcycle and made our way to the school where the teachers, students and the villagers were eagerly awaiting our arrival. Sipping on the locally made mohi (a drink made of yogurt) we watched a traditional Gurung dance performed by the men of the village. After handing over the school supplies and bottled water courtesy of WaterAid we made our way back to Pokhara Lake Side where the coveted Best Modified Royal Enfield Contest that would take place at the Amsterdam Bar. Although not yet legalized by our government, riders go to great lengths to enhance the oomph factor of their rides. This was THE place to strut your stuff for owners of such motorcycles.

The night ended on a high note with the winners for the best Poker hand, best modified Enfield, Hard Luck and few other categories being announced. Live music and a buffet dinner followed. With a little more booze, we enjoyed the final night of the 7th Enfield Rendezvous and Poker Run. To finish off the event, we gorged on some delicious breakfast and the convoy moved back to Kathmandu. Organizing an event on such a massive scale consisting of such diverse individuals is a gargantuan task and Sacred Summits did a commendable job of managing the three daylong event. Being part of the Poker Run to welcome the Nepali new year has become a tradition for us and we’re grateful to have the opportunity to join in on the biggest thunder ride of Nepal. We’re looking forward to the next year where we are expecting to see 500 participants joining in. Till next year!

WATERAID NEPAL 2030 WaterAid is a global charitable trust whose efforts to bring clean water and sanitation to the world stretches back to the early 1980s. They are one of the most respected organizations dealing solely with water, sanitation and hygiene issues. They have worked in Nepal since 1987 and since then have helped more than 720,000 people access clean water and over 220,000 people access sanitation. They work directly with seven local partners in Nepal, across both urban and rural areas to improve water, sanitation and hygiene facilities. In rural areas, their work with Nepal Water for Health has enabled almost 4% of the population to access water, sanitation and improved hygiene. They also campaign to change policy and make governments accountable, ensuring that the right to water and sanitation and its crucial role in reducing poverty is recognized. WaterAid Nepal aims to provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene for all by 2030. Their association with the 7th Enfield Rendezvous and Poker Run was successful in distributing clean bottled drinking water to the participants and the Shree Devi Primary School located in the small village of Dadagaon, Pokhara. CHINA’S COPYCAT CARS AT THE

2015 SHANGHAI AUTO SHOW The Great Wall and Terracotta Warriors aren’t the only reasons to visit China. There’s also a world of home-grown machinery that look remarkably like those designed by other people. We’re not actually accusing anyone of copycatting but see if you can spot anything. Welcome to the world of Chinese clones!

Love Land Rovers? This Chinese company is called ‘Land Wind’.

Starting with Beijing Auto. Do these remind you of JEEP?

Fancy a BMW front end?

The carmaker managed to squeeze JEEP and Range Rover into a nightmare.

www.autolife.com.np

BOOM. The Chinese Hummer.

Now this is quite remarkable. Part Ferrari. Part Porsche. It’s called Eagle Came.

The supercar world has officially been put on notice with this Chinese Buggatti.
