We have a lot of things planned for the 4th year of AutoLife Magazine, and we’re really excited to hit the right notes. To set the pace, we’ll kick things off with an issue jam packed with what brings us together with our readers: the love of anything and everything on wheels. On test is the newly launched Mitsubishi Outlander GLX. As you might remember, we did an epic road trip on a Pajero which we took to Jomsom-Muktinath. Mitsubishi has a soft spot in our hearts, but the road trip set standards for the moniker which they themselves might have difficulty living up to. Read on to see if the Outlander passed with flying colors or fell short of the mark. Another product that had our hopes set high was the KTM. The naked prowess of the KTM Duke had us grinning from ear to ear. Surprisingly, we might have found a beauty that looks better clothed. Now there’s a sentence we never thought we’d be saying. We have both the KTM RC 390 and RC 200 on test inside. There are some amazing personalities that we got a chance to feature in this issue of AutoLife Magazine. A man that took his Honda CG 125 from Nepal to Europe- illegally- Madhav Sharma can be looked at as a determined personality or a stubborn character. His 1997 expedition has more adventures than most men can have in a life time. Following in his footsteps is Julian Shrestha. Who will be making a world tour on a 1979 Bullet, 350. We talk to him as well. On our personality of the month is Mr. Ashoke SJB Rana, CEO of Himalayan Bank Ltd. His collection of SUVs had us jumping at the opportunity to meet the man and ask about his passion for automobiles. There’s a lot more for you to flip through in this issue. We hope you enjoy it as much we did bringing it to you. Until next month…

Owner’s Review I owned a Kia Sportage before buying the Skoda Rapid. I had been driving the 4-wheel drive for four years, hence this time I thought of opting for a luxury car, so I started looking for one. While searching for a new sedan what I wanted was performance, looks and appropriate pricing. I talked to a few of my friends and colleagues for suggestions and most of them recommended the new Rapid by Skoda. In addition to a little research by myself, I found the Rapid to be the most appropriate. It has been nearly five months that I have been driving the Rapid and I must say that I am a very happy customer. The overall look of the car is stunning. It looks better than other sedans in the segment. The exterior is extremely well designed and the interior is equally fabulous and the seats are very comfortable. Talking about the performance of the car, I find the handling of the car satisfactory. The engines are quite powerful and are fairly suitable for the roads of Kathmandu; however as the ground clearance isn’t too high, this ends up creating some problems while cruising through the roads that are still under-construction.
Santosh Ghimire
Managing Director Green Tara International Overseas Services Pvt. Ltd
Now moving on to the customer service offered by Skoda, I believe that the company really works hard to satisfy its customers. Their after sales service is excellent. They actually make an effort to call their customers to remind about the servicing dates and I find this amazing as very few companies in Nepal care about their customers once a product has been sold. All in all, I am really satisfied with this car and think that it is a good value for money.

THE 5 BEST CARS AT THE 2015 DETROIT AUTO SHOW The 2015 Detroit Auto Show was bigger and better than ever with 55 new vehicle introductions. While the incredible supercars and sports sedans garnered maximum attention, pickup trucks also played a major role in a fair share of global debuts. From the legendary Acura NSX, to the spectacular Ford GT supercar, to the high-performance Ford F-150 Raptor, to the reengineered Nissan Titan XD, and the outrageous Hyundai Santa Cruz Concept, these are our favourite vehicles from the Detroit Auto Show.
FORD F-150 RAPTOR The 2017 F-150 Raptor is the ultimate high-performance offroad pickup in the company’s line-up. Ford has reengineered every part of the F-150 Raptor to make it the toughest, smartest, most capable off-roader – and more efficient than ever. Mechanically, the new Raptor is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre Ecoboost V6 which makes 411 horsepower and 588 Nm of torque. The engine is coupled to a 10-speed automatic transmission which marks the first use of the much-awaited 10-speeder from Ford. The flagship truck weighs 500 pounds less than the previous one, thanks to the new aluminium body forged from high-strength, military-grade, and aluminium alloy. The new Raptor is 6 inches wider than the standard F-150 for improved stability off-road. The truck comes standard with Fox Racing Shoz, Torsion limited-slip front differential, a new transfer case, and a Terrain Management System with multiple driving modes- Normal, Street, Weather, Mud, Baja and Rock, combined with 17-inch Goodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires specifically designed for offroad performance. According to Ford, the Raptor’s new transfer case is designed to work as both a locking unit for crawling and a full-time unit for other off-road applications.

NISSAN TITAN XD The 2016 TITAN XD is set to challenge the highly competitive full-size pickup segment with bold new design that combines the capability of a heavy-duty hauler with the drivability and affordability of a light-duty pickup. The Titan XD is powered by a new Cummins 5.0l V8 Turbo Diesel and gasoline V8 and V6 respectively. The Cummins diesel is expected to provide a projected 20 percent better fuel economy than a gasolinepowered V8. The all-new Nissan TITAN XD exterior and interior designs were created at Nissan Design America and inspired by a theme of “powerful precision tool”. The exterior provides a commanding presence with a fresh, modern technical feel. Exterior features include extended front overhang to incorporate the high performance grille, front spoiler, roof and tailgate spoilers, front tow hook hole cover, under body covers, rear tire wind deflectors, LED headlights and taillights, signature Daytime Running Lights and puddle lamps. Interior design features include seven assist grips, console-side map pockets, remote start with climate control function, and Rockford Fosgate premium 12-speaker audio system. The vehicle also offers standard front and rear Zero Gravity seats that help maximize posture positioning for enhanced comfort during long-distance driving. The all-new Nissan TITAN XD Crew Cab is the first in a line-up of TITAN trucks that will be offered in Crew Cab, King Cab and Single Cab configurations. Pricing and full specifications will be announced at a later date.

HYUNDAI SANTA CRUZ CONCEPT Hyundai is targeting what it calls “Urban Adventurer” with the Santa Cruz Crossover Truck concept. The Santa Cruz is powered by a 2-litre turbo diesel engine that makes 190 horsepower and delivers 406 Nm of torque. The four-door crossover truck is ideal for manoeuvring in the city and for the weekend adventure. Plus, Hyundai’s exclusive HTRAC system provides allwheel-drive confidence. The concept has seating for five. It features a boldly expressive design. Features include a wide stance with an upright hexagonal grille up front framed by dual lens-free, honeycombed headlamp protectors, LED fog lamps and an integrated retractable tonneau cover. This is one concept vehicle that we are looking utterly forward to in the coming years.

ACURA NSX Following numerous concept variants over the past three years, Acura has finally put the wraps off of the production version of the secondgeneration Acura NSX. The second generation NSX comes twenty-five years after the original one. The 2016 NSX has a powerful twin-turbo 75-degree DOHC V6 engine with a 9-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) and three-electric motor Sport Hybrid system—integrated with an ultra-rigid and lightweight multi-material body with world’sfirst material applications and manufacturing processes. It also includes three electric motors- one for each of the front wheels and a third teamed with the engine. The three-motor hybrid system can generate stability, control, and power distribution that are currently available only in $1-million-plus hybrid supercars. The V6 engine employs a race-inspired compact valve train and dry sump lubrication system to help lower the centre of gravity. The all-new 9-speed DCT delivers synapse-quick gear changes and rev-matching downshifts. The new NSX has four driver selectable modes (quiet, sport, sport-plus and track) through its Integrated Dynamic System with pertinent graphics and information. The system adjusts engine, motor, transmission and chassis response, as well as the engine sound level, based on the needs of the driver and driving environment. Acura calls the NSX a “humancentred supercar”, and promises “an uncompromising focus on the driver.” Acura estimates the car will cost about $150,000. The new NSX is expected to produce over 500 horsepower.

MADHAV SHARMA
FROM NEPAL TO EUROPE, ON A HONDA CG 125, IN ‘97 The line between determination and stubbornness is very thin. People’s opinion on which side of the spectrum Madhav Sharma falls under can vary. Some could also presume that he is highly ambitious, so much so that it might have gotten the better of him while others could commend the fact that he achieved something many commoners couldn’t even think of attempting. We talk to Madhav Sharma about persistence, failed attempts, accidents that could have been fatal and his refusal to quit; all in an epic journey from Nepal to Europe on a Honda CG 125. Something no other Nepali has been able to replicate till date.

AL: When did the tour start? What sparked the idea? MS: I started this tour from Shahid Gate on Chaitra 29, 2053 B.S. As to how this tour started, I always had the desire to do something more for the nation than just for myself. I wanted to introduce Nepal in the world by doing something distinct. I started making some plans and went through books and research papers as references. While doing so, I came across the Guinness Book of World Records which sparked the idea of setting a world record by travelling across the world in a Honda CG 125. AL: How was the biking culture back here in Nepal when you started the trip? MS: There were no things as such. There were no clubs and nobody cared about going on for an adventure trip. AL: So you were the first man from Nepal to ever do so? MS: Yes, the first and the only one to do so. At least till now! AL: Tell us about your plans? How did you make it happen? MS: Back then, things weren’t as

technologically developed as it is today. The concept of touring was not very refined. It was extremely difficult. When I tried to communicate my plans and dreams to others, they would tell me I was crazy because it was impossible. Even the official documentation processes were challenging and the government was not even close to interested about such matters. I talked to the government for a year but all in vain. In addition, I had another dilemma; I was riding a CG which was already 15 years old at that time. Plus, travelling on some highways in Europe and other parts of the world required a 250cc capacity minimum. I was expecting the government to help me get a new ride for the tour, but it didn’t happen. AL: Well, it doesn’t look like you were off to a great start. MS: But, I had my mind set on doing this no matter what. It was either a ‘do or a die’ situation for me. My ego got the better of me. If the government wasn’t going to give me a bike, I would take my own CG.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AL: Wasn’t taking the CG difficult for you? We believe that the bike is appropriate for city riding but isn’t it rather difficult for the highways? MS: I would have loved to have a higher capacity motorcycle, but I did not have a choice. I wish I had more support from Nepal government, but they disappointed me the most. 19 years later, the situation has not changed. AL: So how did you manage the whole ride? MS: To keep it short, I did it all illegally. AL: Illegally? MS: In order to cross international borders in a personal vehicle, you need a document called Carnet. The Carnet system allows you to temporarily import and re-export your vehicle without paying the customs duties (import taxes) normally associated with a permanent import. And like I said, I didn’t have that. And I didn’t have a 250 cc engine which was a requirement for some international highways.
suggested that I get the documents from the concerned authorities in India. So I went back to India to the place where the officials from Pakistan had advised me. On reaching there, the Indian officials told me that I had the bike registered from Nepal so they couldn’t really do anything about it. They further added that Nepal had no such provisions. So clueless, I came back to Nepal and decided to knock the doors of the government yet again. I found out that carnet was organised by the Alliance International de Tourisme (AIT) in Switzerland, and administered through agents worldwide. I realised that some agency from here would have to contact them. I went to the Ministry of Sports who, as it so often happens in Nepal, promptly directed me to the Transport Ministry.
There I was sent from one department to the other looking for a solution. This went on for a month, still no luck. But I was determined to complete my trip, so I went back to Delhi, visited the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association, they convinced me that they still could not help. I wasn’t turning back; I went to the Pakistan border again. On reaching the border, the officials asked me if I had been successful in attaining the carnet. I gave them a plain no. I told them how it was impossible in Nepal. I told them that I wasn’t going back. After around three to four days of effort, I managed to talk to their head of department. Finally they let me pass, but only after issuing a stern warning that if I get stopped at Pakistan for any reasons, my bike would be seized. Taking the risk yet again, I continued the tour.
AL: Didn’t that cause problems? MS: The problems came in hard and fast. I managed to beg and plead with the officials at the Indian border to let me pass without the document, but they warned me that I wouldn’t be able to get past the Pakistan border without it. I took a chance and ventured forward, but the inevitable happened. The officials in Pakistan weren’t as lenient and sent me right back. AL: What happened next? MS: The officials at the Pakistan border

AUTOLIFE January 2015 31
So it was easier there. AL: Were there any other obstacles? MS: On reaching the European countries, the first difficulty I faced was right hand driving. The implications of the 250cc engine minimum came into action on their highways. Well, I had to take the highway route because if I took the local ones I’d just get lost. So, despite being illegal, I travelled the highway anyway and got caught several times. After getting caught I would be sent back to smaller tarmac, but then again I would sneak my way through. The cycle continued. I completed the whole thing so illegally that if in case I had an accident, there would be no way I would be able to claim for anything.
AL: You’re riding around with a Nepali number plate in Pakistan. We’re guessing you were noticed. MS: I did get stopped at Pakistan but I talked my way out of it. I got really lucky despite all the trouble. AL: How much time did it take for you to reach Pakistan? MS: It took me close to 4 months to reach Pakistan so you can imagine the hassle. They let me go further by officially writing on paper how and why I had been permitted in my Passport.

AUTOLIFE January 2015
AL: We might already know the answer, but, was it smooth sailing after that? MS: No, I was stopped at every country. And whenever I did, I would have to convince them that I had no bad intentions. AL: Aren’t the laws and restrictions stronger in other countries? How were you able to convince them? MS: After crossing Pakistan, I crossed Iran then headed to turkey. Now I had reached the European border. The Europeans were used to welcome riders coming to and fro from other countries.
AL: You did have accidents didn’t you? MS: Yes, I had one major accident in Turkey. It was 5 or 6 in the evening and I was riding to Istanbul on a highway. Out of nowhere, a car came flying towards me from the opposite direction. It hit me hard and I was unconscious. After gathering my senses, I witnessed that the casualties inside the car that had hit me were taken to hospital, but I was still there. After a long time, a pickup truck came and picked me up and took me to the hospital. I got lucky yet again, the doctors checked me and told me it was a small injury and got me bandaged and that was it! It was a narrow escape. AL: What about the bike? MS: The bike was heavily damaged. After getting discharged from the hospital, they took me to an army training centre. The handles of my bike were broken, the wind visor was all smashed and the bike didn’t look like a bike anymore. However, I was lucky again. The army officials took the bike somewhere and repaired it. After staying at the training centre for 3 days, I continued my trip anyway. Upon

reaching Istanbul, a university professor took me to the university hospital because my injured foot wasn’t looking too good. There I was diagnosed with two fractures in my left leg. There I had to get it plastered. I was stuck in Istanbul for more than a month. AL: Did you ever think of giving up? MS: The trip did not go as planned as it took a lot of time, yet I never thought of giving up. I knew I had not chosen an easy task but I was determined to complete it. AL: Of all the places which country did you like the most? MS: I loved France as a country, and I found Switzerland had the friendliest people. AL: What did you do in case of engine breakdowns? MS: Well, I had learnt mechanical tips in case of emergencies; however I had no clue about the engine. So, whenever I had an engine breakdown or just clutchproblems, I would just wing it to the nearest workshop. At one point, I had to ride a long way stuck in the first gear. AL: What happened after the Euro Trip? MS: I had planned to go to Canada but I couldn’t. The legal restraints were significantly tighter because I wouldn’t be travelling inland any more. If there was any wiggle room I would have definitely gone forward, but it finally looked like I had reached the end of my road. AL: If it weren’t for the documents, you would have made it. MS: Yes, I gave it my all. Sadly, some things were just out of my control. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AL: Are these documentation problems solved now? MS: Shockingly, after all this time (to be precise 18 years), our country still can’t provide a Carnet. No ministry or institution is authorised or has taken the responsibility of doing so. Because of this many dreams like mine must have been shattered. I would have been able to complete the world tour had our government been more proactive. AL: How much time did it take you to complete the whole trip? MS: Initially I had planned to do so in three months but it took me a year. AL: Did you have a dream bike; you wished you could have taken for the trip? MS: I was promised a 250cc Honda by the government which didn’t happen, so it was my 125cc CG all along. I would rather spend Rs.6 lakhs on the trip rather than on the bike alone. AL: So how did you manage the financial aspect? Travelling that distance must have been expensive. MS: I sold my house and my factory. I sacrificed everything to chase my dream. To this day, I am trying to recuperate from the financial blow of this trip. AL: Was it worth the sacrifice? MS: Had I not made those sacrifices and backed out from this road-trip, it would have haunted me throughout my life. Even though I could just limit the tour to Europe, I still know deep in my heart that I did what was possible from my side.

AUTOLIFE January 2015
A well-known face in the motorcycling industry of Nepal, Julian Shrestha is the president of Vintage Motorcycle Club Nepal. His passion for motorcycle dictates his lifestyle and he has been in it for quite some time now. For most motorcycle enthusiasts traveling the world on a motorcycle is the ultimate dream and it isn’t any different for Julian. Madhav Sharma’s expeditions had always intrigued Julian and now finally after years of deliberation, he is setting out to do something that no Nepali has done before. Travel the world in a two wheeler. We talk to him regarding his plans here.
AL: How did you get into motorcycles? JS: I grew up in Itumbahal, at a time when it was a small close knit community. Amongst the 30 or so houses there was only one motorcycle, and it was my grandfather’s. It was a Honda that was passed onto my father. I think that was where my interest in two wheelers started from. My cousin brother Pramod Shrestha (a.k.a Goofy) was also an inspiration. I has highly impressed with his riding skills and wanted to become like him. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AL: So you’re planning on traveling the world on a motorcycle? JS: Yes, if all goes well I will be leaving on the 19th of February 2015, Nepal’s Democracy day.
mobile which will help me with the road tracking system. Horns and Hooves has helped me plan this trip, and a Shark helmet is going to be provided by Gear Venture Nepal.
AL: Hmm, that reminds me of one other person who tried something like that 19 years back… JS: Madhav dai I presume. His travels are what got me started on this whole idea. I’ve read his book almost five times now.
AL: Which bike will you be taking? JS: I will be taking the 1979 model, 350cc Royal Enfield. The main reason I chose this bike is that I know it very well. Even if a problem arises during the trip I will be able to take control over the situation. Another reason is that I want to get myself into the world record. If I complete the trip, I will have traveled the longest distant in this particular model. Hence if I complete my tour, I will be breaking the record and setting a new one.
AL: What got that idea into your head? JS: I felt like I needed to do something for my country, getting a bike across the world from Nepal would be something that could do that. AL: Apart from planning on conquering the world on your motorcycle, which other trip has been memorable for you? JS: Every trip is special, but if I have to choose one, I would have to say my Darjeeling trip. AL: How are the preparations coming along? Which institutions in particular are helping you? JS: Hills to Himalaya Club is our chief sponsor at the moment. The company has sponsored my bike plus has Rs 1 lakh for the carnet permit. The total cost of getting the permit is more than Rs.3 lakhs which is refundable after completing the tour. AL: Are all your paper works ready? JS: Yes. The Foreign Ministry has really helped me out. Other than that, the Lumbini Development Trust and Tourism Ministry are also supporting me with the preparation.
Getting to London is just Phase One of my trip. If everything goes according to plan, I will be going to North America, then South America then Africa. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
The government is also helping me with accommodation during my tour. They have coordinated some rooms at most of the embassies. I approached NASA (Nepal Automobile Sports Association) to help out with paper works, but it didn’t work out. AL: How else have you prepared for the trip? JS: Every trip is unpredictable; you never know what is going to happen. So keeping in mind the various aspects I am learning a few survival tactics like how to repair bikes and pitch my own tent. Ranging Gear has provided me with necessary equipment for this a trip. Colors Mobile has given me the latest
AL: Tell us about the route you will be taking. JS: I will start my trip from Mahendranagar, from there I will enter Delhi. In Delhi, where I will be visiting Delhi’s Tourism Board and the Old Delhi Motorcycle Club where I am excited to meet Bobby Sigh. From there, I will be leaving for Pakistan’s Istanbul. After that I plan to head to Iran where I will be staying at the Hussaine Guest House, the owner ‘Hussaine’ is a rider himself. From Iran I will be heading towards Turkey, where I will be staying is still a question mark. The next stop is Bulgaria, then to Serbia. From there I will be riding to Croatia, Austria, Vienna, Germany, Denmark through Sweden on to Belgium France, Spain and finally to London in a three hour long ship ride. AL: Which places are you most excited about visiting? JS: Germany, Portugal, Austria and Switzerland. AL: How will you round everything up after London? JS: Getting to London is just Phase One of my trip. If everything goes according to plan, I will be going to North America, then South America then Africa.

AL: What do you prefer more? Bikes or Cars? Why? Ashoke Rana: Cars because you can travel in comfort and avoid the pollution while travelling. AL: Hatchbacks, Sedans or SUVs? Ashoke Rana: I did have sedans before, but due to the condition of the roads I decided to switch to SUVs instead. I like hatchbacks too but they tend to rattle in the back as they get older.
AL: How did you first learn to ride/drive and which is the first car/bike you had a go on? Ashoke Rana: I learned to drive in Indonesia and obtained my first license there. I learned on a Toyota Crown. AL: Is there a driver behind the wheels of your car or is it you who takes charge? Ashoke Rana: During office hours and for engagements I have a driver, but on other occasions I drive myself. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AL: Till date, on which car or bike you have had the best ever riding/driving experience? Ashoke Rana: I think it would be driving a Mercedes SL 500 doing around 240kph on the German Autobahn. The speed and the luxury of the drive were amazing. AL: Personally, what have been the pros and cons of owning an exotic set of wheels in Nepal? Ashoke Rana: The cost is a major factor. Not only the price of the vehicle but the maintenance, insurance and road tax is very high. The benefit is that you are in a safe vehicle which is a major concern when you are travelling on the ‘so called’ highways of Nepal. AL: One wicked or crazy thing that you have done on wheels? Ashoke Rana: I flipped a Land Cruiser by accident once. AL: Is there an ultimate dream car/bike that you’d like to have parked in your garage? Ashoke Rana: Definitely an Aston Martin DB9.
I WOULD FIRST OF ALL LOWER THE CUSTOMS DUTY ON VEHICLES, THEN INTRODUCE MORE TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND ALSO MAKE SURE THAT THE ROADS ARE MAINTAINED. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AL: If you were given complete control of the country, what changes would you bring about in the automotive scene of Nepal? Ashoke Rana: I would first of all lower the Customs Duty on vehicles, then introduce more traffic lights and also make sure that the roads are maintained. I find it rather dangerous driving on uneven and pothole riddled roads like ours. Apart from these, I would personally like to see the microbuses disciplined. Also I would make sure the law of the land is enforced and all the illegal settlements along the national highways are removed. AL: How do you feel about the road widening and new roads construction project that is going on in the capital? Ashoke Rana: Great, but I am still waiting for the road in Maharajgunj to be blacktopped. It has been almost a year since the project was started. I read it somewhere that it is one of the “National Pride” projects, hence the delay.
AL: If you could wish for one automobile marquee to have a showroom here in Nepal, not yet present, which would it be? Ashoke Rana: Maybe the Audi.
AL: Have you ever been in the MA PA SE police checking? If so, are there any funny incidents? Ashoke Rana: I usually have a driver and find it funny when they make a sneaky attempt to smell him. Nevertheless I must add that MA PA SE has produced positive results.
AL: Where do you think is the best destination to drive/ride to in Nepal? Ashoke Rana: It has to be the road from Narayagadh to Nepalgunj and from Itahari to Pashupatinagar.
AL: Your message or word of advice to all the auto lovers and owners in the country. Ashoke Rana: Observe the traffic rules and maintain your vehicle.
AL: What are the worst and best things about driving In Nepal? Ashoke Rana: The wretched condition of the roads, the failure to execute traffic rules and riders getting impatient while waiting in lanes are the few reasons which makes the driving atrocious here. However, on the brighter side, we are blessed with wonderful scenery which makes the driving experience pleasant.

standard 18 alloy wheels immediately make a statement with its eye-catching styling and modern design. And it is a big boy. Measuring in at 4655mm in length, 1800mm in width and 1680mm in height its size helps it stand out from the crowd. When a vehicle teeters towards the larger end of the spectrum, it runs the chance of appearing to look like a bulky, disproportioned contraption. Thankfully, the new Outlander is pleasantly proportioned and maintains its sleek aesthetic design. The flowing front-end appearance is consistent with the design and contributes to the aerodynamics of the vehicle.
INSIDE, THE OUTLANDER’S INTERIOR MATCHES THE TASTEFUL SIMPLICITY OF ITS EXTERIOR.
INTERIOR Inside, the Outlander’s interior matches the tasteful simplicity of its exterior. Recognizing the importance of a practical and high-quality cabin to crossover buyers, Mitsubishi created a simple, functional dashboard with user-friendly controls. There aren’t a lot of buttons, and the layout and trims are sparse, but not unattractive. At a time when almost every model tries to emulate luxury models, the Outlander cabin isn’t going above and beyond in design or materials, choosing to opt AUTOLIFE January 2015 47
for a warm and commodating feel. The Outlander is well above par in almost every respect. It has generous cabin space and comfortable seating that accommodates five passengers in the GLX model and up to seven occupants in the GLS model as well as a spacious room that provides plenty of space for cargo needs. The driving position is comfortable with tilt/telescopic steering and good headroom and legroom for passengers. The GLS is one of the most compact three-row vehicles. The seats fold flat and the second row slides front and behind to fine-tune legroom, however the cargo floor is rather low.
THE COMPACT SUV IS A SURPRISINGLY COMFORTABLE VEHICLE FOR BOTH FIRST- AND SECOND-ROW PASSENGERS, AND THE ADDED VALUE OF A THIRD ROW MAKES IT A SOLID REPLACEMENT FOR FAMILIES NEEDING MORE THAN A SEDAN.
The compact SUV is a surprisingly comfortable vehicle for both first- and second-row passengers, and the added value of a third row makes it a solid replacement for families needing more than a sedan. A second-row seat sliding function provides easy access to the third-row seats. Padding and springs in the third-row seat cushions contribute to riding comfort. You can recline the seatbacks to any of four settings. The Outlander also has an excellent driver seating position. The rear seating can be flexibly arranged to meet changing needs. Convenient controls for the audio system and Bluetooth hands-free devices are mounted on the steering wheel for easy-to-reach access. The Rockford Fosgate infotainment system is a welcome feature. The vehicle’s tailgate can also be raised or lowered electronically by simply pressing a switch near the driver’s seat. To ensure utter luxury, the air conditioning system provides separate temperature settings for the driver and front passenger. The new Outlander has more noise insulation in the floor,

dashboard, and headliner, and combined with a submissive suspension and improved aerodynamics amounts to a very quiet, refined cabin. There’s also an under floor storage box that has enough space to hide a couple of laptop bags out of the way, as well as open side boxes just behind of the wheel wells, giving smaller items a place. PERFORMANCE The best looking vehicles with all the features will still be incomplete if the performance does not match up. Once again, Mitsubishi has it covered with the Outlander. The Outlander offers a solid and enjoyable performance with excellent 4WD experience when initiated. A 2.4L 16-valve DOHC MIVEC engine acted as the powerhouse of the GLX Outlander we drove, smoking out a maximum power of 165 bhp and maximum torque of 222Nm. The powerful engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox to deliver high performance including powerful acceleration and responsive road handling. The engine is also responsive at low revs and takes up the slack well, which is likely to make it immensely easy to drive on our Nepalese roads. The transmission is also very slick. The Outlander comes with an electric power steering system that is precise and rather firm, offering excellent maneuverability and the tilt features ensure an ergonomic driving experience. It’s suspension boasts of McPherson strut in the front and a multi-link with coil springs and stabilizer bar at the rear. With a softer suspension and other changes aimed at refinement, the driving experience for the Outlander facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

is fully competitive, if not a bit more refined. The paddle-shifters and sixspeed automatic spice up the driving experience by letting you shift gears smoothly and electronically without removing your hand from the steering wheel. SAFETY All Outlander models come with standard safety features. These measures include a highly protective RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body, seven SRS airbags, and intelligent electronic functions that help prevent frontal collisions and a lane departure system that warns the driver if the crossover wanders into an adjacent lane. It also features the keyless operation system as well as an adaptive cruise control (ACC) system along with immobilizer, door and hood opening detection, 3-point seatbelts for all passengers. Additional safety feature includes HSA (Hill Start Assist), which helps prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards while releasing the brake by maintaining the braking force for up to two seconds until the accelerator is applied.

VERDICT Mitsubishi always brings a smile to our face, and it might be because we conquered the Jomsom – Muktinath on a Pajero. However, in doing that, it raised our expectations from all things with a Mitsubishi badge on it. The Outlander had its work cut out for itself, but it still managed to satisfy us fully. Its road presence is stunning and the performance will bring a smile to your face whether you’re cruising through straight tarmacs or fighting through hazardous off road terrains. It is the perfect coming together of style, luxury and utility. With features and comfort to boot, the Outlander lived up to our expectations.

Less than half a decade ago, motorcycling enthusiasts that wanted a little oomph in their machines didn’t have many options to choose from in the Nepali Market. If you had deep pockets you could, maybe, splurge on a high caliber engine to tame your speed demon. But the less fortunate had to settle for a really fast commuter sports bike at best and push it to the absolute limit. This wasn’t a bad thing at all. At that time the 150-200cc premium bikes did a pretty decent job of keeping us occupied. But sadly there was nothing in between that adapted to the needs of the average rider who couldn’t shell the cash in 7 figures. That was until the KTM Duke 200 surfaced. Our expectations skyrocketed and KTM delivered. The orange demon sold like hot cakes and for good reason too. Featuring the best power to weight ration in its class it came as a ray of hope to the common Nepali rider. The 390 followed suit and left us gaping with its capabilities. Finally there was a motorcycle that gave an honest big bike feel beyond expectations. Taking into consideration our nations obsession with full fairings, it was quiet astonishing to see the naked fairings of the KTM Duke gain so much popularity. Just when people began to wonder if things could be taken up a further notch, came something that ticked all the boxes.
WHEN WE RODE THE DUKE 200 AND 390, WE DISMOUNTED WITH A SATISFIED GRIN ON OUR FACES. THROWING OUR LEGS OVER THE RCS, WE COULDN’T HELP BUT HOPE FOR SOMETHING SIMILAR IF NOT BETTER. WE WERE NOT DISAPPOINTED.

A lightweight sports bike with full fairings the unveiling of the KTM RC in the 2013 EICMA motor show in Italy had us all at the edge of our seats. Finally here, we were eager to get our hands on it. Even if it was just an aesthetic upgrade, it wouldn’t be the end of the world for us. However KTM promised that there was more to it than what met the eyes. We took the RC 200 and 390 to find out first hand.
STYLING Nepal loves a fully-faired engine and the full fairing of the RCs is an instant winner. We wouldn’t blame

you if you took the RCs for a higher caliber machine than they actually are. The aggressive styling demands attention. Two projector lamps and DRL whiskers nestle under a raked out windscreen. Similarly aggressive design aspects transfer onto the chiseled fuel tank that drops down by a liter in capacity to the Duke. The 390 features an engine cover that only differs to that of the 200 in color; the prior painted in a combination of white with KTM in black with orange accents and the latter sticking to an all black and orange theme with white accents on the KTM logo. The mirror mounted turn indicators, a segment first, are also decent eye catchers. The all-digital instrument cluster isn’t different to its naked sibling and the switch gears are well built. The triple clamp mounted handle bar definitely comes to par with the sporty aesthetics and dynamics of the RC. A bright orange exposed trellis frame transitions your interest onto the extremely well designed rear. Slim LED lights settle under the tail section accompanied with protruding indicators. The exhaust too is sophisticatedly integrated with the full fairing onto the underbelly. But the star here is the beautifully designed rear seat that contributes to the singleseat illusion that establishes the RC’s sports bike design. The KTM RC 390 is equipped with Metzeler Sportec M5 56

tyres while the 200 sticks to the MRF. The non-adjustable 43mm inverted fork and spring-preloadadjustable shock are featured When it comes to visual appeal, the edgy design and styling of the KTM RC definitely sets the standard in its segment.
PERFORMANCE When we rode the Duke 200 and 390, we dismounted with a satisfied grin on our faces. Throwing our legs over the RCs, we couldn’t help but hope for something similar if not better. We were not disappointed. The more sporting riding position and clip-ons level with the top triple clamp alone sets the RC apart. Getting into position demands you to step into your alter ego that feeds off of the numbers escalating through your speedometer.
GETTING INTO POSITION DEMANDS YOU TO STEP INTO YOUR ALTER EGO THAT FEEDS OFF OF THE NUMBERS ESCALATING THROUGH YOUR SPEEDOMETER.

rc 390: The higher-powered brother of the RC 200 brings things up to a whole new level. The claimed peak output of 44 horsepower at 9500 rpm seem justifiable when you’re crouched and holding on to the bolting machine that you

confidence to push yourself further down the road. You don’t have to worry about locking up the 300mm and 230mm disc brakes at the front and rear in panic braking situations. The integrated ABS system makes it a safe fast motorcycle, especially in wet conditions. Interestingly, if you are the kind who fancies getting the rear wheels up more often, the ABS can be easily switched off via a switch in the console. just unleashed with the flick of your wrist. The linear power delivery is very grunty at the lower rpms and convincingly rakes through the rpms seamlessly translating into a satisfying zing at the 10,000-rpm redline. Simply put, the RC 390 will shoot through the tarmac and render objects in the rear view mirror invisible in a matter of seconds. Gear ratios are comparatively better so you won’t shift through gears as quickly as in the 200, the shifts however are seamless and smooth. The RC 390 is composed and slaloms equally well through tight traffic as it bolts through straights. Thanks to the Metzelers on the 390 carving corners is where it excels with exceptional grip. If you want to put your shoulder into the curve this is the bike to do it on. The ABS system works great and gives you the extra

IF YOU WANT TO PUT YOUR SHOULDER INTO THE CURVE THIS IS THE BIKE TO DO IT ON.
You can’t take anything away from the 200 either. It boasts of probably the best power to weight ratio in its segment and performs with vigor. The numbers claim a peak power output of 25 bhp at 10000 rpm. It is torque hungry and gear ratios are short, so you will find yourself shifting through gears rather quickly. The shifts are smooth thanks to the well-built gearbox, but you’ll be looking for more gears when you hit the limit. Cornering is a positive experience and it pulls out of the corners with proper energy. Of course the ABS and Metzeler tyres are missing from the 200 but the MRF tires and the 300mm front and 230mm rear disc brakes do a very decent job of gripping the road and bringing you to a halt.

VERDICT As much joy as the KTM Dukes brought to the motorcycling world of the average economic Nepali man, the RC took it a step further. For the motorcycle enthusiasts who had to settle for the naked styling of the Duke, the RC comes as a savior for the ones who love a full fairing. It certainly satisfies the speed demons and is in its entirety a very capable lightweight sports bike. The RC 200 might be short of a few features and power output, but it gets you very close to the big bike feel. The 390 version tops it up with a considerable amount of power and features and takes the satisfaction quotient to an even higher level. So what this ultimately means is that you get to feel a sports bike experience without having to inherit a fortune to do so. Now what more could you ask for?

Yamaha’s FZ-16 added a whole new dimension to the sub-200 cc motorcycles. Dubbed as ‘Lord of the Streets’, the FZ16 kick-started the revival of Yamaha Motorcycles India Pvt. Ltd when it was launched in 2008. That original FZ16 was followed by two new models, the FZ-S and FZ-S FI. These models were deservedly popular in the market, sky-rocketing Yamaha’s sales thanks to an appealing blend of performance and versatility. Now, Yamaha looks to continue that momentum in the crowded 150cc segment with this much-needed update. We take a quick ride to find out if the FZ-S FI V2.0 can keep the FZ’s momentum going forward.
STYLING: The new bike has more flesh to flaunt. The stubby front look is dominated by an angular headlight compartment which houses a multi-reflector headlight with facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
clearer flasher lens. The rectangular instrumentation panel is multi-functional with eco indicator. The Eco Indicator indicates when the motorcycle is being ridden to deliver optimum fuel efficiency. It is very practical and all the information can be accessed easily even in broad day light. But, the panel lacks a clock. Both the switchgear quality and palm grips are good. The most-noticeable part of the new FZ series is the redesigned rear end which looks futuristic as compared to the earlier FZ. The muscular fuel tank has remained untouched, and so has the 140/60 rear tyre. The rear section has new easy to grab aluminium handle bars which makes it is easy to move the bike in parking conditions. Pillions will also appreciate the new grab-handles. The sharp rear comes with a new futuristic-looking midship muffler. The new bike also comes AUTOLIFE January 2015 63
with full tire huggers which will come handy during wet weather. The overall looks of the bike adds a sporty attitude and powerful road presence.
ERGONOMICS: The riding ergonomics is shared with the earlier FZ series. The riding geometry is aggressive. The FZ has flat and wider handle bar with rear set foot pegs which makes the bike perfect for city riding condition. Both the rider and the pillion will appreciate the seating geometry. The all-new rear tail- lights give the bike a touch of style at the back too. The seating system is incorporated in a new split seat which makes the bike comfortable for both the rider and the pillion.
SUSPENSION: The suspension setup is comparatively on the stiffer side like the earlier FZ. The stiff setup is a bit harsh on potholes. Stability is good, thanks to the suspension and the new pattern 140/60 radial rear tire. The front telescopic fork and rear monocross suspension provide plenty of rigidity. The new tire is puncture resistant and it did manage to provide a better grip when ridden through wet areas. This also gives the riders enough-confidence to manoeuvre the bike through corners. It’s a comfortable motorcycle, helped both by the suspension and by the seat, which is broad, well - padded and comfortably adjusted for the rider and the pillion.
PERFORMANCE: If you are to go by the numbers, FZ-S FI V2.0 is appears to be slightly underpowered than its predecessor. That all changes when you slip in clutch, throttle it up and take off. The power delivery of this bike will make you smile. 64
AUTOLIFE January 2015
The new Fuel Injection System is smooth and contains sensors, actuators and an Engine Control Unit (ECU) which calculates and delivers the optimum amount of fuel to the engine, enhancing both the performance and mileage. Blue Core technology is Yamaha’s new generation engine enhancement technology which offers more power, faster pick-up, better fuel-efficiency and environmental friendliness with lower emissions. This is achieved by optimizing the combustion process, reducing power loss, precise control of fuel supply and ignition timing. The new FZ-S FI with ‘Blue Core’ delivers 14% more mileage against earlier FZ’s carburettor versions. At just 132 kg without fuel, the bike is even more responsive leading to quick initial pickup and smooth acceleration both in hairpin bends and straight roads. The gear shifts and acceleration is smooth and stress free. The Diamond frame complements the riding ergonomics perfectly. Coupled with a wheelbase of 1330 mm and a ground clearance of 160mm, the bike guarantees a supple ride quality and playful handling. The bike has plenty of stopping power, thanks to the 240mm front disc brake and a 140mm rear drum brakes. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
VERDICT The FZ-S FI V2.0 is a thoughtfully designed all-rounder bike with plenty of character and practicality. It is quick, appealing and fun to ride and the bike is much better than the earlier FZ. The brand FZ might not be brand new, but it’s still a very capable and desirable motorcycle and the price-tag of Rs 2,47,900 justifies the product.

AUTOLIFE WISH LIST
THE DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN’S RIDE Who doesn’t love a Triumph? To most of us, the very thought of Triumph motorcycles immediately conjures up the image of the legendary Bonneville. Massively popular globally, Triumph’s scrambler-like images are now well implanted in the subconscious of motorcycle enthusiasts around the world. With mad styling and engines that envies other manufacturers, Triumph has embodied the spirit of motorcycling with a touch of glamour. Triumph has been the bike of choice of celebrities. Elvis bought Triumphs. Clint Eastwood, Bob Dylan and James Dean rode them, Steve McQueen straddled a Triumph,
while Evel Knievel flew a Bonneville over Caesar’s Palace fountains in Las Vegas – and of course Marlon Brando who rode his own 1950 Triumph Thunderbird in the movie “The Wild One”. Triumph Motorcycles Ltd. is the largest British motorcycle manufacturer with over 100 years of history. It was founded by Siegfried Bettmann in 1884. During its glory days, Triumph introduced the parallel twin platform engine, set multiple land speed records and achieved race track successes which gave the company an iconic status. Like the rest of the British motorcycle industry, Triumph went out of business by the 1980s.But
the brand was resurrected in 1984 by British industrialist John Bloor after the original Triumph Engineering went into receivership. With more than 50000 motorcycles built so far, Triumph is showing no signs of slowing down.
AutoLife Wish-list is a feature content where we focus on automobile brands or specific products, which we wish to see automobile running in the roads of Nepal. Definitely,
There sure are already some privately imported Triumphs thumping down our road, but it’s high time we had these actually available here in an authorized dealership. From the retro scramblers to adventure motorcycles, here’s a compiled wishlist of Triumphs we would like to see on our roads. All prices below are based on the starting market price in India.

shoes and straddle their bikes. Even luckier for us, we got to do it in style with the Trek Remedy 8. Here’s the bike that got us back on our saddle.
Features Trek doesn’t really have to do much to get the attention of avid cyclists. The moniker has secured a strong position as a traditional brand which has won the hearts of many. So it’s almost always certain that you won’t be disappointed when you get your hands on one of their steed.
Winter, it seems, is the kryptonite to some cyclists. Plummeting temperatures and pedal powered transport isn’t the most popular combo, which is quiet surprising considering cycling really heats up your body. Yet, the prospect of facing the chilly winds is often singlehandedly out shined by the allure of the cozy cabin of a car. Whatever the case, cycling takes the back seat when winter season hits high gears. Luckily, the mercury is slowly rising which is good news for cyclists who want to catapult themselves onto their riding facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
Jam packed with design features and specifications, the Trek Remedy 8 is a technical mountain bike but definitely does not let down any rider. The alpha platinum aluminum frame is hydroformed and well shaped. Integrated into the system is the evolved rocker link, which transforms the plateand-bolt style to a single-piece rocker link. The lighter link provides a stronger connection point between the front and rear triangles, creating a stiffer frame for greater control with minimal weight.

front and CTD (climb-trail-descend) rear shock. Both suspensions come equipped with Trek exclusive DRCV (Dual Rate Control Valve) technology whereby the air spring is made two separate air chambers with the second chamber coming into play when the first one isn’t enough to hit big bumps. Most traditional suspensions attach the bottom of the shock to a fixed frame mount. The Full Floater is different and attaches the shock to two moving linkage points so it can better respond to bumps making it feel like there is more travel than there really is. Another Trek exclusive is the Mino Link. An adjustment link located on the previously mentioned EVO Link allows you to fine tune head tube angle by 0.5° and BB height by up to 10mm by a turn of a nut. It allows you to choose between slack or slacker geometry, without negatively affecting suspension performance.
Performance Riding the Trek Remedy certainly brings you out of the winter ruts. Let it loose on

the trails and it begs you to take the paths less traveled. The DRCV technology in the suspension isn’t just fancy mumbojumbo. It makes easy work of big bumps and doesn’t make it feel like the bike is bottoming out. Weigh down on the pedal and the Remedy eagerly powers up to speed from a dead stop, a character attributed to the combination of the full floater design and well-valved shocks. The drivetrain on the Trek Remedy 8 was comprised of Shimano SLX shifters and front derailleur with a Shimano Deore XT rear derailleur. The Remedy 8 also has a 40/30/22 crank. Trek has made certain that there aren’t any issues with chain stability. Shifting was also noticeably light and smooth. Not only is it capable of making high speed descents, it also maintains a steady confidence while making its way uphill. The Remedy comes with a standard 70mm stem that provides decent control to master the 750mm bars. It doesn’t make a big deal out of corners either and whips through them with finesse. The Avid Elixirs impose few limitations on the braking capabilities of the bike whether it was to scrubb off some speed or to come to an emergency stop.

Verdict By the looks of it, the Trek Remedy 8 is an astonishingly capable all rounder. As with all Treks, the build quality is impressive and the ride quality also stands up to expectations. Whether it’s snaking up climbs, plying through rough trails or speeding down descents, The Remedy is up to the task. With all the technical specifications and exclusive technology integrated into the bike, Trek brings out the best in the Remedy 8. Best of all, it is a fun bike to ride and that’s exactly what you need to welcome the summer.

WORLD DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR ROAD TRAFFIC VICTIMS OBSERVED IN NEPAL
N
epal Automobile Sports Association(NASA) along with 10 other institutions successfully celebrated the World day of remembrance for world traffic victim at Patan Durbar square on November 16, 2014. Mr. Anuparaj Sharma, the president of Nepal Human Rights Committee was the chief guest for the event. Other guests included prominent constitutional members Mr Pemba lama, Mr Chandra Maharjan and Mr Madan Amatya along with other representatives from various NGOs/ INGOs. The event started off by lighting candles and observing a minute of silence to honour the victims of the road accidents. Later, Mr Sharma, the chief guest of the event, handed a sum of Rs.10000 to the family of Mr. Basanta Dagi, who lost his life in a road accident in Qatar. The World Day Of Remembrance For Road Traffic Victims was also celebrated across the globe. On this occasion, the global road safety

ambassador Michelle Yoah stated, “Today is an opportunity to remember the thousands who lose their lives on the world’s roads daily, and the heartbreaking loss which mothers, fathers, sons and daughters are left with as a result. Most people don’t realise the scale of this catastrophe we face - every single day 500 children lose their lives on dangerous roads. We know that speeding is a leading key factor in accidents, so governments have a moral responsibility to ensure effective laws which restrict speeding are in place to protect all road users.” She further added - “Road deaths and injuries are sudden, violent, traumatic events, the impact of which is long-lasting, often permanent. Each year, millions of newly injured and bereaved people from every corner of the world are added to the countless millions already suffering as the result of a road crash. The burden of grief and distress experienced by this huge number of people is all the greater because many of the victims are young, because
many of the crashes could and should have been prevented and because the response to road death and injury and to victims and families is often inadequate, unsympathetic, and inappropriate to the loss of life or quality of life.” This special Remembrance Day in Nepal was intended to respond to the great need of road crash victims for public recognition of their loss and suffering. The main mission of celebrating this day in Nepal was to establish a fund of Rs.10 lakh in order to spread awareness about the traffic rules and provide relief to the family of Road accident victims. The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims takes place on the third Sunday in November every year as the appropriate acknowledgment of victims of road traffic crashes and their families. It was started by the British road crash victim charity, Road Peace, in 1993 and was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005.
This day is also claimed to be an important tool for governments and all those whose work involves crash prevention or response to the aftermath, since it offers the opportunity to demonstrate the enormous scale and impact of road deaths and injuries and the urgent need for concerted action to stop the carnage.
CHILD DECLARATION FOR ROAD SAFETY Nepalese Automobile Sports Association, an active association dedicated in the development and management of Automobile related sports in Nepal along with 10 other institution is planning to conduct the global campaign for the Third UN Global Road Safety Week from 4-10 May 2015, on the theme ‘children and road safety’: #SaveKidsLives. For this campaign, they have
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
planned to distribute pamphlets, organise nationwide signature programmes, interaction programmes as well as commitment programmes. Further they have also scheduled to organise a media and a voting campaign. The movement seeks to highlight the plight of children on the world’s roads; generate action to better ensure their safety; and promote the inclusion of safe
and sustainable transport in the post-2015 development agenda. The centrepiece of the ‘Save Kids Lives’ campaign, launched in November 2014, is a child declaration, developed with input from children around the world. The campaign invites all road safety policy-makers and advocates to “sign it”, “show it”, and “deliver it” to those in charge of road safety in countries and communities during the Week.
