EDITORIAL WE WILL RISE

I

It’s been a long break and this is the first issue we’re coming out with after the devastating earthquake. Although we’re super excited to be back with what we do best, this issue bears its share of grief. Nevertheless, despite the tragedy and tremendous loss that the nation has suffered, it is important to get back up, dust off and carry on. We dedicate this issue to anyone and everyone who has had to suffer a loss, tangible and sentimental. Wounds will heal..... There’s good news for the auto enthusiasts of Nepal, the countdown to the NADA Auto Show has begun. That means new wheels will be rolling and deals will be coming in left and right. New cars have already been coming in and we have one of the most anticipated ones covered in this issue. The popular hatchback from the Hyundai roster gets the crossover treatment. Based on the i20 platform, the Hyundai i20 Active is here and ready to mix it up with the other crossovers that are battling it out for top position. We test drove it firsthand so you could get the review while it’s still piping hot. Another popular looker from the same segment has also made its appearance. Check out the Fiat Avventura on our launchpad along with the Volkswagen Scirroco which had us giddy with excitement. The Ducati Scrambler Enduro is here and just when we thought the Scrambler couldn’t get any better in Nepal. Also, check out the amazing Benelli BN 302 that makes its entry into the sub 500cc motorcycle market, both motorcycles are on our Launchpad. We also test ride the 2015 Honda Dio that is all set to start trends in the Nepali market. Also on our test front is the tiny hatchback from the not so tiny brand, the Datsun Go! Finally, with a new steed in the AutoLife stable, we take a short road trip on the Honda XR 250, proving that you can have fun without getting too far away from the city. There’s a lot more to keep you busy till the next issue where we will be getting even closer to the NADA Autoshow and will be CRETAing more fun reads for you because we ASPIRE to keep you satisfied. See you guys next month!

AUTOLIFE FEEDBACK

Owner’s Review on Suzuki swift

KIRAN GIRI (Businessman)

After I sold my WagonR, I needed a new car. As Suzuki is an extremely reliable automobile marquee, I chose to purchase the Swift. It seems to have held well compared to other Suzuki cars that I have been used to. It has been nearly 10 years that I have been driving the Swift and I must say that I am very satisfied with the car. The Suzuki Swift is the best-inclass with the latest of features at a fair price. The exterior is extremely well designed and the interior is equally fabulous and the seats are very comfortable. I have taken the car for a few long drives, and I did not face any problems, neither with the engines nor with the comfort. However, on to the vehicle’s

handling and maneuverability on our roads, I find the pickup could be better at uphill climbs, but it still manages to do the job fairly well. Talking about the other factors, this car has decent ground clearance and handles the bumps and potholes easily. The Swift is an absolute delight to drive and is extremely comfortable, even during extensive road trips. I have taken the car for a few long drives, and I did not face any problems, neither with the engines nor with the comfort. Similarly, the cost of ownership and economy is fair as compared to other competitors. All in all, I have had a very good driving experience so far. I would also like to mention

about CG Motocorp’s excellent after sales and customer service. The company works really hard to satisfy its customers. The employees are very helpful and experienced. My experience with the trained professionals and mechanics has been extremely pleasant. I have not faced any breakdowns till now, not even a small one. Hence I believe that Suzuki Swift is a good value for money car and I would definitely recommend it to others seeking for a hatchback. The car lived up to its testimony of being a very reliable, fuel efficient and fun to drive product, just the right blend to appeal to a Nepalese mindset. I am very satisfied with this car and think that it is a good value for money.

Some people read books, some people go out into the city but for a certain group of people traveling is the best way to unwind after a hectic week. Whether you’re on your bicycle, a motorcycle, a car or walking on your own two feet (car number 11 as my grandfather used to put it), getting away from the cooped up city will refresh you like no book or tea ever could.

Dhulikhel or Godavari I decided to head towards a village called Tamang Basti.

Now driving and riding new vehicles isn’t what you’d call a stressful job, but I’d take any excuse to get on my motorcycle; especially since I just got myself a new Honda XR Tornado 250. So after a stressful morning of unsuccessfully trying to spread hard butter onto soft bread, I had to clear my mind.

I came across this village a couple of months ago while participating on a post earthquake relief excursion. Despite the chaos and sadness, I was taken aback by the beauty of the village and promised myself that I’d come back at a better time. Making good on my promise, I rode through the windy black tops that would lead me towards Changu Narayan. It was fairly quiet with only a few motorcycles passing by so I had the chance to admire the surroundings that consisted of a juxtaposition of rice paddies and brick kilns. And I could see a storm brewing in the distant skies.

Luckily, living in Kathmandu means that riding a very short distance will get you away from the city and you really don’t have to worry about squeezing a short trip into your busy schedule. Instead of heading off to Nagarkot,

In order to get to Tamang Basti I had to take a right kilometer or so before reaching the Changu Narayan Temple. This leads to a slightly uphill offroad patch which my Tornado was more than happy to prance across. A

part of me was even hoping it would rain so I could see how far I could push the XR. Later, I was thankful that it didn’t. It only takes a few minutes to get to the village, even fewer if you’re willing to gun it through the rocky terrain. Once there you could see an unobstructed view of the entire valley. The absence of the sounds of the city replaced by the quiet of the village was a refreshing change. I sipped on a cup of tea with the locals I had met during the relief program (thankfully they remembered me), and decided to venture further. I was told the trail would lead me towards Telkot and eventually to Nagarkot. However, with the skies beginning to darken I decided to call it a day and leave the rest of the trail for next time. That would just give me another excuse to come back to this beautiful place. And best of all, it takes you less than an hour to get here from Kathmandu.

Once there, you could see an unobstructed view of the entire valley. The absence of the sounds of the city replaced by the quiet of the village was a refreshing change.

T

The Hyundai i20 is amongst the most popular hatchbacks in Nepal. It helped the Korean giant gain a stupendous portion of the market share back in 2009 and it is still one of the most loved cars in Nepal. For a considerable amount of time, the i20 badge dominated and defined the premium hatchback segment. Now the second gen i20 Elite is all set to hit the market and chances are they’re already making the news by the time you’re reading this. What we have here is Hyundai’s swing at the ohso-popular “cross hatch” segment with the vamped version of the Elite i20. Most crossovers follow the same formula of smacking on a few external claddings to give the hatchback a sporty appeal which qualifies it to enter the aspirant-SUV segment. But the hatchback in context here is amongst the cream of the crop, in terms of its potential market share at least. And Hyundai promises that it’s not just the cosmetic addons that make the i20 Active a strong contender. We’d take their word for it but then that’d mean we’d be passing our chance at test driving the new entrant, and that wasn’t going to happen any time soon.

EXTERIOR

As with all other crossovers, the Hyundai i20 Active builds on the Elite i20 with a number of aesthetic additions. Up front inverted air dams (compared to the elite i20), fog lights and a fake bull bar with skid plates make up the bumper. The Active also gets projector headlights with integrated silver strips and cornering lamps that are angled and activate when you make turns at night. The daylight running lights helps with

AUTOLIFE July 2015 41

the whole sporty premium feel the crossover seems to be aiming for. The bonnet also has body creases that start that give the front end some extra oomph. On the sides and along the body you will notice thick black cladding that decorates the base of the Active i20. There are matte finish roof rails which also add to the adventure ready persona that Hyundai have aimed for. 16 inch diamond cut alloys are what this bad boy rolls on and they look splendid. The rear holds up its end of the deal and helps round off the look of the Active i20 in style. It gets new rear bumpers with a faux skid plate and round reflectors. The 3-cluster wraparound tail-lamps appear to be LEDs, but actually aren’t. Its dark C pillar morphs seamlessly into the rear with an edgy roof spoiler to boot. We’re not sure how well the skid plates will do to protect the car, but the increased ground clearance should definitely do its job.

INTERIOR

Once again, the people at Hyundai have loaded their products with a plethora of features, well at least the top end variant (SX) that we were driving. The aqua blue color scheme on the dash, door pads and seat upholstery didn’t exactly tickle our fancy but there are a lot of other things that will take your mind right off of that. The front seats provide excellent lateral support, underthigh support is adequate. Cabin space is very good for the front and rear inhabitants and will comfortably host those on the big boned spectrum of the scale.

www.autolife.com.np

It has the same premium steering wheel that lets you control the audio, phone via a total of 9 buttons (including a useful one for ‘mute’). The MID offers a wide range of data, including dual trip meters, digital speedometer, service interval and a drive summary (distance covered, average speed, driving time). The MID will also warn you if you have parked with your front wheels turned. You also get push-button start, keyless entry, reverse camera and sensors, an 8-speaker audio system with 1GB memory, USB, AUX and Bluetooth connectivity and climate control. To add to the details, you will also get aluminum coated pedals which we personally loved.

THE ACTIVE ALSO GETS PROJECTOR HEADLIGHTS WITH INTEGRATED SILVER STRIPS AND CORNERING LAMPS THAT ARE ANGLED AND ACTIVATE WHEN YOU MAKE TURNS AT NIGHT.

PERFORMANCE

We had a go in the diesel variant that had under its hood a four cylinder 1.4L CRDI motor which pumps out a healthy 89bhp and 220Nm of torque. Press the clutch pedal and tap that engine start button and the engine will instantly come to life. With minimum turbo-lag, the Active gives great driving satisfaction. Drivability is splendid in the traffic as well as open roads, although you have to downshift at times to get up steep climbs. However, in the cities and highways the 1,4L engine is brisk and up to the task. Its power won’t have you plastered to the back of your seat but it will keep things interesting. Engineers have altered the gear ratios to give the Active better lower end torque. On the highways, the 6th gear will provide great cruising capabilities if you find long enough stretches. The engine is very well refined which is noticeable once you get the car rolling. Gear shifts are smooth and seamless. The ground clearance increase hasn’t affected the driving quality at all. The suspensions quietly do their job and provide a very stable drive even over rough roads. This improvement alone helps give the crossover some actual functionality points over the hatchback. Although the

THE ENGINE IS VERY WELL REFINED WHICH IS NOTICEABLE ONCE YOU GET THE CAR ROLLING. GEAR SHIFTS ARE SMOOTH AND SEAMLESS.

Active might handle some mild off roads, we wouldn’t advise serious off-roading on it. Handling is light and brisk, and our team’s opinions varied on this aspect.

VERDICT

The Hyundai i20 Active goes a step further from the regular recipe of adding cosmetic additions to a hatchback and calling it a crossover. Increased ground clearance and better suspension make the Active more adventure and sport inclined. An already successful platform of the Elite i20 give the Active a strong base and Hyundai have capitalized on it by creating a very good looking car with a certain degree of improved functionality. And as always the Korean manufacturer have not skimped on the feature list either. Keep in mind that this particular segment is rife with competition with each contender biting at the other’s heels. Already existing rivals have taken up a portion of the market and incoming competition have also brought their A game. Because everyone is on point, price will also be a major factor when it comes to making decisions. Nevertheless, the Hyundai i20 Active ticks all the boxes to make it a very good adventure ready crossover which gives it good grounds to be considered a serious contender.

PERFORMANCE (1.2 L PETROL) After taking the diesel for a spin, we also got a chance to take its differently fueled sibling for a drive. Although the diesel variant is the more popular amongst the two, the 1.2 liter petrol did not disappoint. The 1.2L Dual VTVT Kappa petrol motor produces 82 BHP @ 6000 rpm and 115 Nm of torque @ 4000 rpm. It does a great job of getting you from one place to another without any fuss. A great urban commuter that has great drivability, 1.2 liter performs best at 30005000rpm range. Jogging up inclines isn’t too much of a hassle, unless you’re carrying a few passengers in which case you might need to work the engine a tad bit. But for a relaxed drive in the highways or a commute within the city, it does a great job.

Nepal, the number of new drivers is rising quickly among women and that trend is likely to accelerate further as they are increasingly leading independent lives. Not only that, women are also making up a growing proportion of car-buyers. Talking about the same, we caught up with two charismatic bankers – Mrs. Priya Singh Thapa and Mrs. Pratibha Limbu to learn about their driving experiences and their passion and love for wheels.

AUTOLIFE July 2015

The local roads are pretty much dominated by male drivers/riders. How does it feel to be a women driver in Nepal? PST: I feel empowered. It gives me confidence knowing that I am actually a better driver than most male drivers. PL: First of all on a very positive note, I can see a growing number of women drivers in Nepal these days. Driving has become a necessity & a matter of convenience now so more and more women are driving. Being a female driver in our country doesn’t guarantee you any special privileges however at times I feel we do not get respect from male drivers & are often looked down upon as an easy target to overtake. Also, male drivers have this pre conceived notion that women drivers will have a tough time driving when the road conditions are not too favorable. I can see male drivers often dominating & underestimating women drivers but with more and more female drivers showing their expertise in driving may make men think otherwise. Besides the cons, driving is fun at night when there is no traffic and roads are empty.

Now tell us about your interest in automobiles. PST: I love exploring and what better way to do it than drive. I love it. PL: My interest in automobiles started from a young age when I wanted to have my own car. My interests were focused more on the exterior and cosmetics of the car. However, as time passed by I started looking for fuel economy, comfort, engine performance & interiors as well. My top priority still lies in the aesthetics though because I love the sporty look of my Honda brio. Also, super smooth steering makes it a joy ride every time.

Do you remember the first car that you drove? How did you start driving? PST: I drove a Toyota Corolla. PL: My parents bought me a two door Nissan March car after I graduated. It did give me a few www.autolife.com.np

troubles with ignition but it was always a comfortable drive. I learnt driving because I didn’t like to take public transportation & was too independent to have anyone else drive for me. Learning to drive was a gateway to my independence

What’s parked in your garage at the moment? PST: A Geely MK and a Nissan Navara. PL: Toyota Corolla LX & Honda Brio

Your most memorable moment or crazy moment on a car or bike? PST: I remember one time when I and my sister went out without letting my father know that we took the car. I scratched it a little and we thought nail polish would cover the scratch so we used it in an attempt to conceal the damage. It worked, until it rained. We got a pretty good scolding from our father. We both still remember and have a laugh about it till today. PL: Buying my first car from the money I earned will stay with me forever. Taking my parents on a ride after I learnt driving was memorable. Also, there are several moments spent with my family and friends while going on a long drive which was unforgettable.

It’s popularly said that women make bad drivers than men? What’s your take on this statement? And, on a scale of 1-10 where would you put yourself as a driver? PST: I think women are more safe and disciplined drivers. Just because you drive fast and recklessly doesn’t make you a “good” driver. I’d say I’m an 8. PL: Who says so?? So far I know we are more careful, we are more disciplined & we follow traffic rules more obediently than men do. I think women are better drivers than men. The saying that women are bad drivers might have been popular in eras bygone; today women are bold, confident, smart and independent and are completely at ease in their driving seat. On the scale of 1-10, I would

give myself 8. I am deducting two points for at times not following traffic rules.

Is there any dream vehicle that you wish to own? PST: The Range Rover Sport. PL: I wish I owned a Red Lamborghini Gallardo.

Hatchback, Sedans or SUVs? PST: SUVs for sure . PL: Hatchbacks, anytime.

If you were given complete control of the country, what changes would you bring about in the automotive scene of Nepal? PST: I would streamline the traffic rules and make sure that they are enforced. Improved road conditions would be a priority as well. PL: If that were to ever happen, the first thing I’d do is reduce the hefty excise duty imposed on import of automobiles and further waive the excise duty on electric/ hybrid vehicles because that is the future to sustainability. To compensate for the increased number of cars due to the decrease in excise duty I will come out with a road expansion policy. And lastly, I will ensure regular availability of petroleum at all times.

Have you ever been in the MA PA SE police checking? If so, are there any funny incidents? PST: I rarely drink, and coincidently I have never been at a MA PA SE checking because I don’t drive if/ when I drink. PL: Drive safe & Fasten your seatbelts at all times.

Your message or word of advice to all the auto lovers and owners in the country. PST: My message would be: to be courteous to everyone on the road, including cycles and pedestrians like. PL: I haven’t had Ma pa se experience so far because I don’t drink alcohol. AUTOLIFE July 2015 51

DATSUN GO

www.autolife.com.np

DATSUN, AS A CORPORATE BRAND, WAS CREATED IN 1931, BUT ITS HISTORY GOES BACK 17 MORE YEARS - TO 1914

T

The Datsun GO has been selling like hot cakes because it is a very good value for money vehicle. It is an affordable car with the necessary amenities you’d expect in such a purchase with a respectable brand name from the automotive fraternity as a bonus. Datsun, as a corporate brand, was created in 1931, but its history goes back 17 more years - to 1914. Kwaishinsha Motor Car Works was founded in 1911 and they produced their first car in 1914 and named it DAT. The acronym was homage to the company’s partners - Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama and Meitaro Takeuchi. In 1925, the company’s name was changed to DAT Motorcar Co. In 1930, there was a regulation passed by the Japanese government that allowed cars under 500cc to be driven without a licence. DAT started manufacturing 495cc cars that would sell in this newly created market segment and those were called Datson. The name was later changed to Datsun, and that stayed forever after that. It is currently a brand owned by Nissan. In 1986, Nissan phased out the Datsun name but re-launched it in 2013 as the brand for low-cost vehicles manufactured for emerging markets. The resurrection comes almost three decades after the brand name was phased out. Now, the brand is more locally oriented rather than the global orientation that Nissan follows. The good news is that it makes this a cheaper vehicle to own, but will it get you enough for the money or does the low price come at the expense of quality and performance? www.autolife.com.np

AUTOLIFE July 2015 57

INTERIORS The Datsun Go is not a fancy car, and you’d have to be from a different world to expect it to be. However, it is a spacious and substantially designed cabin with functionality as its prime focus. The color palate of the interior plays on the grey and limits itself to that hue. Nevertheless it is useful with a lot of usable space. There’s a useful recess on the dash top and a large shelf under the steering column. The glovebox too is large but it comes without a lid, making the cabin effectively devoid of any concealed storage areas. You will also notice the Go’s unique 5+1 seating arrangement. The extended front passenger seat has a base and backrest which stretch to the driver’s seat to form a sort of a bench. However, this isn’t meant to be used a seat but a place for women to place their handbags in. But we can see it being used as a seat for small children to sit in, which is a terribly bad idea as there are no seatbelts and it looks unsafe and uncomfortable. Their engineers, though, say that it’s a clever thing to do as it helps a person slide out from either side in tight parking spots. In the rear, the seats are comfortable and provide decent headroom and legroom.

THEIR ENGINEERS, THOUGH, SAY THAT IT’S A CLEVER THING TO DO AS IT HELPS A PERSON SLIDE OUT FROM EITHER SIDE IN TIGHT PARKING SPOTS

58

AUTOLIFE July 2015

www.autolife.com.np

There aren’t adjustment options for the driver seat so you take what you get. Thankfully it isn’t uncomfortable and doesn’t pose much of a problem unless you are very short. The gear lever is mounted on the dash with the pull-type handbrake positioned next to it, both of which will take some time to get used to. The Datsun GO is a very plain head unit that’s got an aux-in jack and a USB. The USB doesn’t play your music; it’s there just to charge your electronic device. You get automatic windows in the front, but the driver doesn’t get the controls for the passenger windows.

EXTERIORS To keep it simple, the Datsun Go is a good looking car, it really is. The Datsun Go is bigger than its rivals, comparable to the Nissan Micra with which it shares its underpinnings and 2,450mm wheelbase. And bigger is better when it comes to small cars. To begin with, the Datsun doesn’t look like a budget car. The front grille boasts the Datsun name with a badge on its big hexagonal honeycomb grille. The bonnet has a bold V and the bumper is well sculpted. The large, swept-back and beautifully detailed headlamps look neat. On the side profile, you will notice that the windows have thick black cladding and muscular haunches starting from the rear doors that flow into www.autolife.com.np

AUTOLIFE July 2015 59

the outward bulging tail end. The rear is pretty simple. The 155/70 R13 tyres though are very small and look tiny in the wheel arches. PERFORMANCE Yet again, the Datsun Go borrows its 1.2 liter three cylinder petrol engine from the Nissan Micra and Micra Active. It produces 67bhp at 5000rpm which combines well with the light weight of the Go to give you a good driving experience. It performs better at midrange revs and shows its eagerness to go in the city streets. The engine does get noisy after 4,000 rpm, but never to the point of feeling strained or harsh. That’s probably because Nissan has fixed the rev limiter at a rather low 5,250rpm to get better fuel economy, so you’ll often find yourself maxing the car in each gear earlier than you’d expect. It has a taller gear ratio so you don’t have to change gears too often. Gear shifts aren’t the smoothest but it also doesn’t require too much effort. The Go’s smart gearing and low weight plays a big role in its impressive mileage. There is a substantial amount of body roll, but the overall ride quality and handling is good. The suspensions won’t give you any trouble either. Flinging it around corners is surprisingly fun, but not in the Fast and Furious way. But you shouldn’t take it overboard.

VERDICT Many people confuse the Datsun for the frugal man’s car when in fact it’s a really good car for the price that it comes in. Appearance wise, the Datsun is a looker. It doesn’t have too many things going on but it doesn’t look like the plain Jane either. It could have done a lot better with the interiors but we’ll let it slide because the drive quality is very satisfying and we can’t expect much when you’re getting such a great price.

THE DATSUN HAS A REPUTABLE HISTORY, AND NISSAN SEEM TO HAVE RESURRECTED IT FOR A GOOD REASON. 60

AUTOLIFE July 2015

It has cut a lot of costs so it is a basic car, but a good one at that. The Datsun has a reputable history, and Nissan seem to have resurrected it for a good reason. This should be a great selling point for people who are looking for a good car at an affordable price. It’s just that simple. www.autolife.com.np

Fiat has been very quiet after the launch of the Punto. What are your plans for the Fiat Avventura? The Avventura was launched in India a few months ago and it did fairly well there. However, we wanted to take our time to ensure that it would fare well in the Nepali market as well. We also did a lot of endurance tests to see if it could handle the Nepali terrain as well. Before this we launched the Fiat Punto. During its launching period we touched base with close to 400 existing clients of Fiat vehicles because it was our primary focus to make sure that they were satisfied not only regarding the performance but the after sales services as well. We are following suit with the Avventura and tapping into our already existing clients as well as new customers and giving them the best service available. What are the key selling points of the new Avventura? I personally attended the endurance tests and did a few test drives myself, and I assure you that it is a cut above the rest. It is not just cosmetic additions that make this offering an upgrade. It has very good terrain tackling capabilities as well. It has sporty looks and an increased ground clearance. The best part though is the pricing. We are providing the best price anyone can get. Who do you think will be/ are your main competitors for the Avventura in the Nepali market?

Volkswagen Polo and even the i20 Active would be our prime competitors. What do you think gives the Avventura the edge over the competition? Firstly, you can take the Avventura anywhere. If you want to take your Saturday rides one step further you don’t have to worry about making it with the Avventura. That makes it different from what the market has now. And also, our pricing strategy is focused on gaining market share which also gives us a competitive edge. The devastating earthquakes must have had its effect on the company and the market. How would you say has the earthquake affected the automobile industry? The earthquake definitely had a toll on the entire country. In the auto industry as well, the effects can be seen aplenty. Foot falls have decreased, bookings have been altered but none of that can be controlled because people are not just suffering from tangible losses but it has also affected the public’s sentiments as well.

Life Automobiles has breathed new life into Fiat, what can we expect from it in the near future? We will be focusing on building a world class workshop. We are planning to improve our existing services as well. Our prime focus is to make sure that no customer is left unsatisfied. Do you have anything special lined up for the NADA Autoshow? Let’s just say that it will be very special.

“Life Automobile has been focusing on keeping touch with our clients and keeping ourselves present in the market in any way possible”

How is Life Automobile getting back on its feet? Life Automobile has been focusing on keeping touch with our clients and keeping ourselves present in the market in any way possible. Hasty pressure on increasing sales is not our focus as we understand that the country is going through difficult times and we need to act accordingly.

The Avventura fits in somewhere between premium hatchbacks and entry level sedans and that’s where the completion lies. The Skoda Rapid, www.autolife.com.np

AUTOLIFE TEST RIDE

2015 HONDA DIO THE TRENDSETTER!

WORDS & PHOTOS : AUTOLIFE TEAM

AUTOLIFE July 2015

www.autolife.com.np

A

As one of the best-selling scooters in the Indian and Nepali two-wheelers market, no one would have expected the Honda Dio to get a desperate facelift. But, with the competition soaring up across this segment month after month, Honda decided to tweak the Dio with a visual facelift . Funky, vibrant and ubervivacious, the Dio got a much-needed visual upgrade. We ride the new Dio around town to find out if it still holds its sway, seventeen years after its introduction. STYLING: The new Dio looks pretty darned good. It gets all the stylish and visual make-over, definitely more attractive than the earlier Dio and its competition. The Dio has been improved for 2015 with an attractive Moto Scooter design and trendy dual-tone colors. The sharp creases are blended tremendously well without letting down the detailing. The new and youthful body graphics are spot-on, and we liked the white pillion grab-rails. The instrumentation panel which houses the speedometer, trip-meter and fuel gauge looks decent too. Overall, the Dio maintains its charismatic appeal that others have lost by going all generic. ERGONOMICS: The riding position is spacious and relaxed. Note, the seats are roomy, given an average Nepalese body structure. Combine this with a comfortable leg space and wider seats, you’re looking at a fun and trustworthy companion to cruise through our wobbly city-traffic and winding highway roads. For the most

www.autolife.com.np

AUTOLIFE July 2015 67

hopeless of chic, the Dio even has an ample under-seat storage space of 18litres that can accommodate a full-size helmet and other items easily. However, the only drawbacks are the short rear seat pegs.

“IT IS A COMPLETE CITYSCOOTER AND PERHAPS THE BEST AMONG ALL.”

68

AUTOLIFE July 2015

PERFORMANCE: The new Dio may not have a completely brand new mill, but, its old 109cc, air-cooled, 4-stroke, SI engine is still scintillating. With 8 bhp of power @7000 rpm, it’s very nearly as powerful as its competitors, and HET (Honda Eco Technology) pushes the efficiency even further. The handling is responsive and accurate, fittingly for city-hauling or cruising through short highway stretches. When taken on uneven roads, the spring loaded hydraulic type suspensions at both ends do a fitting job to isolate away from a bumpy experience. Cornering is superdirect and progressive, impressively, the tubeless 90/100-10 tyres’ grips are equally tight. Although the scooter employs drum brakes at both the ends, braking is not cumbersome, all thanks to Honda’s Combi Brake System which work simultaneously and efficiently on the front and rear wheels through an equalizer.

www.autolife.com.np

VERDICT:

Although this segment of the market is hugely crowded with a plethora of humdrum products, the new Dio allows you to step-up from this mediocrity. The Dio is an everyday scooter with a hint of playful intent. It is a complete city-scooter and perhaps the best among all. Since, Honda has a good reputation for quality, reliability and low depreciation, we reckon the new Dio could still be one of the best scooters of the year. And while Honda claims an impressive economy of 60 kmpl, the new Dio hits the right spot.

Oh Snap! How to ride a motorcycle with a broken clutch cable. Y

You’re riding your motorcycle and out of the blue, your clutch cable snaps. Now you’re unable to disengage the clutch plate so that you can change gears smoothly. Mechanical things don’t always guarantee trouble free service, so there is a chance you’re going to encounter a problem once in a while. Luckily, it’s not the end of the world. Even if you aren’t in close proximity with a mechanic or service center, because here’s how you ride your motorcycle with a broken clutch.

Pr even tion

As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. This is especially applicable here because it is really easy. Keep your clutch wire greased on a timely basis and the chances of your clutch cable snapping is rare. Clutch cables break by fraying, popping one strand after another over time. So it’s also something you can keep an eye out for, not something that’s likely to happen without warning. Make inspecting the head and tail of the cable part of your routine pre-ride bike inspection, along with tire pressures and such. You can also encounter a broken clutch lever in a spill, making it impossible to use the clutch. To prevent that, you can saw half way through your lever (three quarters along its length) with a hack saw to create a natural stress relief point, and in case of 70

AUTOLIFE July 2015

impact it will break at that point leaving you the rest of the lever to work with. (DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK).

Pr eparation

Being prepared is a always good. Learn how to change your own cable and carry a spare one along on long rides. In fact, you can tape your spare cable and route it along with your current cable and just replace it when it snaps. All you have to do is connect it and you’re good to go.

Safety Riding with a broken clutch cable is possible, but by decreasing control over your bike it adds an extra element of risk and complication. If your route home (or to a mechanic) involves crossing a busy segment of the city you could fare off better by opting to call a friend or your mechanic for help.Keep safety as your first priority and resort to riding without a clutch cable only when it’s absolutely necessary. There’s no shame in pushing. Riding Through If getting a mechanic or friend is not an option, then you’re in for the ride. Put your bike in neutral and get it rolling at a steady pace with your engine on. A hill descent if available would be useful. Once you get rolling, shift into second

gear and accelerate lightly. 1st gear is too short and abrupt.

Shifting Gears

To shift up, close out the throttle a bit and shift your gear up. In order to downshift, decrease your engine rev, close the throttle and downshift. Downshifting can be slightly jerky.

Coming to a stop

You need to think ahead when coming to a stop, so slow down well ahead of your stopping point. If you can find neutral, coast yourself to a halt. But your engine can be reluctant to come to neutral at times, so your best bet is to slow down as much as you can and apply both brakes when the time comes. Be ready for the jolt though as your engine will come to a stop as well.

DIY: CLUTCH WIRE REPLACEMENT with Mohammad Khursid

The clutch cable gives you the ability to disengage your clutch and shift gears, which is a very important aspect of riding a motorcycle as you might have already figured. Because it is used so much, the clutch wire will eventually wear out and break if not attended to. This can be a real pain in the tail when you’re riding. Luckily, you can learn how to replace it and save yourself a lot of hassle when you’re on the road or don’t have a mechanic nearby. So if you’re going on a long trip, remember to take a spare clutch cable with you. Here’s how you change a worn out clutch cable, but we do suggest that you take some professional help before getting your hands dirty.

TOOLS REQUIRED •Pliers •Wrench •Phillips Screw Driver •New Clutch Cable

1 Start by locating the cable adjustment nut. Strange as it might sound, you’ll tighten the cable adjustment nut at this point by using a wrench. With this done, you should find the cable adjuster for the clutch lever and loosen the lock nut there.

3

Use the wrench to remove the tension from this lever to remove old cable.

72

AUTOLIFE July 2015

2

Keep tightening the cable adjuster until it’s up against the perch of the cable lever.

4

Move onto your clutch lever on the handle. Loosen it up and gently but firmly pry it from its place. www.autolife.com.np

5

Remove the old cable completely from the motorcycle.

7

Thread through the route of the old cable wire by passing the cable between speedometer & handle bar underneath the fuel tank & bring it towards the clutch case side.

9

Take up the slack in the cable that leads to the clutch lever. Turn the adjuster at the lever counterclockwise until there’s just a small amount of slack of around 1/8 inch at most

6

Get your new clutch cable and apply some grease onto the inside of the cable cover where the wire is.

8 With the motorcycle clutch cable loosely in place, you should proceed by tightening the adjuster where the cable meets the engine. When fully tight it should sit against the clutch release. Loosen it slightly to give enough play in the clutch before you tighten the locking nut.

10

Engage & disengage the clutch lever to ensure that the clutch is in action.

ABOUT MOHAMMED KHURSID Khursid is the head mechanic at Sacred Summits and has been for quite a long time. He knows his Royal Enfields like the back of his hands and there are very few others in the country who are as good as him. As amazing as they are, Royal Enfields have a knack of breaking down unexpectedly, if that’s the case, Khursid is your man. That doesn’t mean he can’t find his way around other two-wheeler commuters though.

AUTOLIFE GEARS&ACCESSORIES

RISE OF THE ROAD BIKES The mountain bike craze took the Nepali world by storm more than a decade ago, but now it’s the dawn of a new era. Or at least it seems like it. There are many people who have excitedly adopted mountain biking as a life style. Considering the terrain of Nepal, mountain biking seemed like a very viable mode of transportation to get you from point A to B and to places that Hero cycles couldn’t get us. Riding road bikes on our rotten roads, on the other hand, seem slightly more difficult to come to terms with. However, Gearventure Bike Nepal (authorized distributors of Specialized Cycles) thinks differently. They will be bringing in an array of road bikes into the Nepalese market with the hopes that it will create a new wave amongst cyclists. Road bikes are different from most of the cycles that you see around town. While mountain bikes are all about suspension travel, tyre tread and trail munching capabilities, road bikes have a completely different foray. Road bikes are built to travel at speeds on paved roads. Paved roads which, to be honest, are fairly decent in Kathmandu at the moment.

HYBRID BICYCLES

TOURING

Compared to other categories of cycles, road bikes have a few characteristics that separate them from the rest. •The tires are narrow, high-pressure (>=100 psi), and smooth to decrease rolling resistance. •They usually use derailleur gears; however, single-speed and fixed-gear varieties exist. •The bicycle is of a lightweight construction. RECUMBENT BICYCLES

www.autolife.com.np

Generally, road bicycles can describe all bikes used primarily on paved roads instead of off-road terrain. There are subcategories as well though. There are touring bicycles that are designed for bicycle touring, they are robust, comfortable, and capable of carrying heavy loads. HYBRID BICYCLES are designed for a variety of recreational and utility purposes. While primarily intended for use on pavement, they may also be used on relatively smooth unpaved paths or trails. This would seem more in line with the demands of our roads if your main purpose is transportation. Hybrids typically borrow the flat, straight handlebars and upright seating posture of a mountain bike, which many beginning bicyclists find comfortable and intuitive. Hybrids also employ the lighter weight, thinner wheels and smooth tires of road bikes, allowing for greater speed and less exertion when riding on the road. Hybrid bikes often have places to mount racks and bags for transporting belongings, much like a touring bike.UTILITY BICYCLES are designed for utility cycling and are a traditional bicycle for commuting, shopping and running errands in towns and cities.

ALLEZ

CRUX ELITE EVO

DOLCE

ELITE

ROADSTERS are a specific form of the utility bicycle developed in the UK. RECUMBENT BICYCLES are designed for variety of recreational and utility purposes, but are characterised by the reclined riding position in which the cyclist is seated. They are more unorthodox, especially here in Nepal. A FLAT BAR ROAD BIKE, also called a fitness bike is a relatively new style of bicycle. It is simply a road bike fitted with MTB-style shifters, brake levers and a flat handlebar. This combination provides a light, fast bike with a more upright and neutral riding position. A flat bar road bike is most commonly used for commuting, urban and fitness riding. Cycling culture took off with promise, but lately things have stagnated. There are fewer people getting into the habit and those that enthused by the prospects of mountain bikes usually tend to it as a weekend hobby. There are many who religiously cycle every day, but new comers are decreasing in number. Road bikes might just bring the cycling market back into the lime light, especially it was the buda cycles were the pioneers to begin with. They are more inclined to the purpose of transportation and Kathmandu could do with more cycles and fewer motorized vehicles (yes, we said it. But we still love our engines). Who knows, this might just be a new chapter for the cyclists of Nepal.
