There was a time when you had a constantly leaking nose and rode your cycle endlessly without the care for any maintenance. Yes, there would be the occasional fixing of a loose chain or a puncture. But that was it! Even getting a new brake was only for those who could afford it. Most of us would either brake with our foot, Flintstones style, or probably just jump off our cycles on seeing the impossibility of coming to a halt. However, this was during a time when we mostly bought cycles only as a kid to go around our locality and later gave it away to the milkman. Today, cycling is taken more seriously by people of all ages for a variety of reasons, from environmental concerns, health fitness to truly feeling that rush of adrenaline. Cycling is fast growing as a trend with enthusiasts becoming more willing to explore the various facades of cycling. Now, you can get world class purpose built mountains bikes in the Nepalese market that range from Nrs.50000 up to nearly NRs.5 Lakhs. So, in our bid to further promote this fresh hype for cycling, we specially dedicate this issue of AutoLife to all cycling enthusiasts out there. With Uncle Jack Frost now leaving the scene and making way for the increasing temperature, it really makes sense to hop onto your mountain bikes and burn away those extra flabs you’ve gathered this winter. Apart from city riding, try enjoying the beautiful sights and scenes in some of the most exotic destinations in Nepal. And to get you motivated, we have featured some of the adventures made by cyclists to places like Mudkhu Bhanjyang, Jomsom and Rara Lake. For those new to the mountain biking scene, we have also featured some of the popular cycle shops in the country to get you started. SKODA RAPID DIESEL

SKODA M.A.W. has introduced the

diesel version of the Rapid sedan in the Nepali market, considering the demand for diesel cars on the rise. Diesel cars have more benefit compared to the petrol ones as they are more economical, provides better mileage and pick up and delivers high torque. With the new slogan ‘Drive by Excellence’, the SKODA Rapid is a sedan with 1600 cc of pure exhilaration. All the new variants: Active Plus, Ambition Plus, and Elegance, have diesel engines with 1.6 litre capacities, which is the highest in its particular price segment. The vehicles have a maximum power of 105 PS @ 4400 rpm and a torque of 250 Nm @ 1500-2500 rpm. The ground clearance for each variant

FOURTH INTERNATIONAL STUNT SHOW

Organizing motorcycle stunt shows is not new to the team at Planet Nepal Events. In fact, they were the first ones to give the Nepalese audience a taste of international level freestyle motorcycle riding back in 2010. Planet Nepal is also the organizer of Nepal’s only Reality Stunt Show – Moto Madness. So keeping up with their initiative, Planet Nepal Events had organized their 4th International Stunt Show on 15 February, 2013 at the Satdobato Swimming Complex. AutoLife Magazine was the Official Magazine Partner for the event. The stunt event was conducted in support from the Adventure Riders Group and KTM Street Riders, who started the show with their group motorcycle stunt performances. In between, there were also some bicycle stunts performed by the KTM Street Riders Cycling Team. However the main attraction of the event was the show put up by the winner of MTV Stunt Mania 2 Babar Khan. The MTV Stuntmania is the most popular biking show in India and is broadcasted through the popular MTV Channel. Babar thrilled the crowd with a

variety of stunts from drifts, burnouts, and stoppies to different variant of wheelies and displayed amazing control on the motorcycle. But his true capability was marred by the lack of a truly wellequipped stunt motorcycle for the show. The show could have definitely been better and more exciting had his personally customized stunt motorcycle been brought in from India. Though a short duration show overall, the audience did manage to witness an array of amazing stunts that was effortlessly displayed by Babar Khan. To pull off such a show isn’t an easy feat, and the team at Planet Nepal Events definitely deserve a round of applause for taking the initiative. But sadly the overall promotion, coordination and execution of the event still leaves a lot to be desired.

Cycling, be it to just commute or provide the fix for the adrenaline junkie, is widely embraced in developed countries. Cycling is a huge movement elsewhere in the world and cyclists ride alongside cars in designated bike lanes. It is a trendy means of mobility and serves as a fashion statement among riders. Simultaneously, showcasing technical tricks and partaking in competitive mountain bike racing is also growing in popularity. Such is the popularity of cycling events that they are becoming mainstream sporting events, and the spill over is evident in our parts of the world as well. The notion that cyclists in Nepal are only used by the most marginalized that cannot afford a private vehicle is now changing rapidly. More people are adopting biking as a greener, healthier lifestyle and engaging in adventure sports. YouTube videos showing world-class riders undertaking technical tricks has played its role in promoting mountain biking or competitive cycling in Nepal, with the younger generation in particular showing more and more interest. Thus recognizing the burgeoning cycling community and the growth of passion for cycling, Epic Events presents the 2nd Kathmandu Bike Festival 2013 (KBF 2013) - an outdoor lifestyle festival to celebrate cyclists and all that is great about cycling, with a special focus on mountain biking. The second coming of the muchanticipated event is part of their movement to encourage cycling. The main elements of this festival include loving the great outdoors, enjoying the various races and competitions scheduled and meeting friendly people who share similar interests and outdoor thrills.

The main events that will be taking place are: OPEN COMPETITION It’s a new component of the festival, which will comprise of Enduro Race (60 per cent down hill and 40 percent cross country), with participants less than 22 years of age competing for what will be a very tough race. INTER-SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY COMPETITION Riders from 20 different schools will compete in this category before a crowd of over several thousand spectators. Riders in two categories - Boys/Girls - will race in and around Khokana-Bungamati village area covering a minimum of 5 Km of trails. THE DIRT JUMP COMPETITION The competition will showcase the best dirt jump mountain bike and BMX riders. The competition aims to bring unparalleled action, excitement and entertainment to a new level. Riders will battle for the coveted trophy and personal pride on the pump track of Gyanodaya Residential School in Khokana. FUN COMPETITIONS/RACES Fun competition/races such as F1 Race, Track Stand, and Wheelie Competition etc. will be free and open to all ages of enthusiasts. AND everyone wins a prize! WATCH & WIN Starting all the way from the start to the end of the event, visitors/fans will have chances to win some amazing riding gear – from helmets to bikes and much more! THE YAK ATTACK: rIDERS’ PROFILE l Listed as one of the top 5 hardest mountain bike events in the world by Mountain Bike UK magazine, this is definitely the biggest mountain biking event that is happening in the country. Yes, the Yak Attack has been happening in our very own Nepal since the last seven years. One of the toughest mountain bike stage races in the world, it is also the highest mountain bike race in the world. With over 400kms to cover and a maximum altitude gain of about

5400m, this race is not for the faint of heart. NepalSutra caught up with some of the young Nepali riders who are participating in The North Face Yak Attack 2013. The energetic band of brothers were training on a hill at the edge of the Kathmandu Valley, and told us more about how they got into mountain biking, their training for the North Face Yak Attack 2013, and their hopes for this year’s race and beyond. Aayman Tamang This bright-faced 20-year-old is competing in his third Yak Attack this year. He has been among the top 10 riders before, and is training hard for this year’s race. For the North Face Yak Attack, Aayman is mainly training on jeep tracks, but he is also trying more technical climbs and downhill about once a week. For him, the most difficult leg of the Yak Attack last year was

the Thorung Pass stage, where carrying the bike was difficult. This year, he is shooting for a place among the top 3 and is also brushing up on his skills by consulting various manual of biking techniques for downhill and technical climbs.

Ajay Pandit Chhetri 24 year old Ajay has been the reigning champion of the Yak Attack for three years straight. The defending champion says he hasn’t trained as much for the North Face Yak Attack this year. He hopes to give his all to this final month of training, concentrating especially on endurance training, for this race that tests your stamina. Ajay won his first national championship in 2009, has competed in about 40 events, 10

of them international events. He competed in a race in Costa Rica, dubbed the “World’s Toughest Mountain Biking Race,” which would see the riders paddling almost 150 kilometers every day. While paddling in Yak Attack goes to a maximum of 2.5-3 hours every day, Ajay says that this race feels much tougher because you have to go upto 5,400 metres where the air is thinner. Also, not all sections of the World’s Highest Mountain Biking Race are rideable.

Bikash Shrestha This is Bikash’s second time on the Yak Attack. Last year, he wasn’t competing, but participated in the race as a volunteer sweeper. He was responsible for keeping track of everyone, and would be seen waiting behind to help racers whose bikes ran into problems, those who get too tired or otherwise need help. He was always the last person to get to camp, tirelessly and

patiently ensuring the safety of everyone. Bikash has been training for this year’s North Face Yak Attack, focusing on uphill riding, and also carrying his bike. He says he likes the challenge and the amazing views that are part of Yak Attack, and loved the chance to meet new riders as well as champions.

Mangal Krishna Lama This is Mangal’s fourth time doing the Yak Attack. In the past three races, the 26 year old has consistently come at an overall third position. He says he hasn’t had much time to train this year, and will be happy if he makes it among the top five.

Narayan Gopal says that the Thorung Pass segment of the Yak Attack race is his favorite because it is scary, with long stretches where you have to carry your bike; he loves the challenge.

In the North Face Yak Attack, Narayan Gopal is confident about his uphill climbs, but is working on improving other parts of his riding.

Rajan Bhandari The youngest Nepali rider on this year’s Yak Attack is just 19 years old, and has been biking for two years. This will be his first experience competing in the Yak Attack.

He can be seen encouraging the younger guys to do better, discouraging recklessness, and entertaining everyone with his one-liners. He also wants to encourage more Nepali women to take up riding. Santosh thinks the Yak Attack is a huge positive for Nepal’s nascent mountain biking community as people all over the world who have an interest in mountain biking have heard of Yak Attack. The arrival of international professional riders to Nepal, has helped Nepali riders learn technical skills, and provided encouragement to pursue mountain biking professionally. Mountain Biking is a very broad term and it consists of many styles of riding amongst which the most common terms used would be Cross country or Downhill. These particular terms used in mountain biking is mostly for categorizing competitive mountain biking events. However, there is a misconception that cross country bikes are only for uphill riding and that downhill is easier than cross country. But the fact is, both these categories have charms and challenges of their own. Nevertheless, it is true that cross country involves more distance and endurance while Downhill is shorter and gravity assisted. Now, the question is: what if I like both? Is there something in between? Yes, there is. The gap is being filled out by the increasingly popular riding style called “All Mountain” or “Enduro” where the requirement of the stamina of a Cross Country Rider is intertwined with the skills of a Down Hill Rider. Riding is a passion for me and I like riding both cross country and downhill, however my obsession readings on the “riding meter” is more in favor of “Downhill.” I do a lot of downhill but the terrain of Nepal is such that I have to push or pedal a considerable amount of distance to reach the best downhill sections, so most of my favorite rides are “All Mountain.”

Generally speaking, the cross country style of riding requires lighter bikes with shorter suspension Travel, while the Downhill Bikes are heavier and have huge suspension travel. (Travel is the measure of distance from the bottom of the suspension stroke to the top of the suspension stroke.) It is true that cross country bikes are easier to conquer uphill ascents but not as fun as its heavier counterpart: the downhill when it comes to speeding down a hill. Getting back to the top on a downhill is a really difficult task though. As per my riding needs, I need something in between but more inclined towards the downhill style of riding. I feel the recent introduction of All Mountain category of mountain bikes has revolutionized the traditional “Ying Yang” approach to mountain biking and provides riders such as myself with an opportunity to do both. I would have to say the perfect bike for my kind of riding or for anyone that wants a

The remote control CTD allows three positions – Climb, Trail and Decent- increasing efficiency and the

performance depending on the terrain further the Rock Shox reverb dropper seat post is a must with the SX. The downside of the Meta SX is its weight which makes it slightly difficult to make uphill climbs but it more than makes up for it while going downhill. Overall the Meta SX is the ultimate bike for ALL mountain style of riding and I would have to say it is one of the best bikes that I have ever ridden. I lie to you not, the number of times I have tried to use every speed bump in sight as a ramp are embarrassingly high. Obviously you don’t get more than a few inches of air, if you’re lucky, and I suffice with that. You can’t expect to get much air on bumps on the road, can you? Well, say hello to E’s Nest Bike Park! For the first time ever in the country, we have a pump track where you get to improve your drops, jumps, pumping and cornering skills in a safer environment. And it’s bound to be technically sound, hopefully, as it is built under the guidance of a Professional Mountain Bike rider of COMMENCAL: Pierre Edouard Ferry. The official opening of E’s Nest took place on the 2nd of March with most of the mountain biking enthusiasts raring to try out the pump track. The riders certainly brought together a diverse group. The more mature riders consisted of Mr. Nirakar Yakthumba cornering the hell out of the tracks along with the daring Suraj Bahadur Panday (Bunty) ripping it up. Amongst the youngsters, Sandeep Ale (Winner of Kali

Dirt Jump Competition, KTM Bike Festival 2012) along with Prathana Shrestha (WD-40 Women’s Inter School XC Championship) were also there to strut their stuff. And of course, there was Pierre with his high flying antics that left the audience dumbstruck… as expected. By the looks of it, it won’t be long before the youngsters are flying through the track, obviously with a few bumps and bruises.

t’s not every day that a Professional Mountain Bike rider of COMMENCAL comes to train us in modern mountain bike riding theory, skills and techniques and to help build DH trails. But that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Pierre Edouard Ferry, winner of “Suzuki Nine Knights (Trail) 2011” came to Nepal to get his hand dirty on the first ever pump-track in the country. 1. You came from a background of glamour and stardom. So tell us more about this transition to the corporate world? I feel that I have been very fortunate to experience the glamour world when I was younger. Ultimately I always wanted to get into a business of my own, as I believed more in my entrepreneurial skills than in chances of being in the film industry. So it has been a wonderful transition for me, designed by god himself, and I have been sailing along very effortlessly! 2. The local auto industry is pretty much a male dominated industry. How does it feel to be in charge of a major automobile brand such as Toyota? Yes, the auto industry is male dominated. But women with education and exposure too can take up any challenge as a Man. 3. Lately, the prices for most Japanese vehicles sold in Nepal have increased by a significant margin. Though Toyota vehicles have a reputation of their own for its superior built quality and reliability, how do you justify this change? Has this at all affected your potential customer base? The only reason for this change in price is the fluctuating exchange rate of the Yen with the US Dollar. The price of the car is still almost the same, but the exchange rate changes daily. Now Nepal being a price sensitive market, Toyota cars may have become unaffordable for some. But if it fits the budget, we believe that our loyal customers will only settle for a TOYOTA. 4. So as to reach out to more car buyers, are there any immediate plans to introduce less expensive Toyota vehicles like the Etios and Etios Liva in Nepal? Yes, we should have the smaller cars arriving from June of 2013. 5. Now keeping the business aspects aside, tell us about your interest in automobiles. I love driving. It is my expression of freedom. I drive myself. It also keeps my interest in music alive as I can use my driving time to sing aloud!!

As far as possible, I take charge. So only when have to go to crowded places with no parking spaces like New Road, there’s a driver. 9. Your most memorable moment or crazy moment on a car or bike? I bought my first car when I was 19 years old. So being a relatively new driver with a new car back then, my sister and I once decided to experiment on how long the car would run even after showing the lowest fuel level in the indicator. Obviously, we got stranded in the middle of the road and made the walk all the way to the nearby gas station to get fuel! 10. It’s popularly said that women make bad drivers than men? What’s your take on this statement? And, on a scale of 1-10 where would you put yourself as a driver? I agree to some extent. Generally, women are taught driving much later in life and thus end up as nervous drivers. Also, I think driving has a direct link to your decision making abilities. So if women are unsure of themselves, need assistance to make decisions or are the nervous type, then they will surely end up as bad/confused drivers. And as a driver, I give myself – 10/10! 11. In your opinion, what is the worst thing about driving/riding in Nepal and what is the best? Bad roads, chaotic traffic, lack of traffic monitoring and bad public transport drivers, to name just a few of the worst aspects. The best thing is that the driving distances between various points are not too much. 12. Is there any dream vehicle that you wish to own?

But due to our male dominated society, men tend to overlook women when they see them driving, especially the microbuses in Kathmandu. And they think that’s okay! The actual case in Nepal is that even if you are good at driving, the people around you may not be. For instance, all the dents and scratches on my car are from the other cars bumping into me at traffic.

Craziest Moment on Wheels Near my college in Bangalore, there was a railway track gate. It was closing, but I was getting late for my classes and wanted to reach on time. Usually the gate would close at least for 10-15 minutes. As I rushed across the first bar, I realized to my dismay that the gate on the other side had already been closed. I got stuck there as the train was almost reaching. Luckily I was driving a Maruti 800 and I survived as the train was able to squeeze by! I remember the train passengers staring in astonishment.

Opinion on the myth of women being bad drivers: Yes unfortunately the society is carrying this myth about Women not being good drivers. Perhaps this is because of the period of transition where women began gaining equal rights. During that period, men were primarily the people who drove. Then women began driving more and more, and being inexperienced, they had issues. With the men of that era essentially viewing women as inferior in general, eventually this myth got developed. Nevertheless, if you see, numbers of accidents are happening more from men than actually women. Needless to say, women drivers are safer, and take good care of their vehicle. Craziest moment on wheels: I have numerous memories with my wheels. When I started driving on my own, I could just drive straight on a wide road and nothing else. Opinion on the myth of women being bad drivers: This stereotypical myth is basically a result of our backward male dominated society. Driving abilities is completely independent of person’s gender. It is in fact a skill that can be conveniently honed and developed by both men and women. I believe women are more disciplined, patient and responsible when it comes to driving and this I can say based on my own experience and observations. Craziest moment on wheels: I had recently started driving and was still a bit unexperienced behind the wheels. So while out on the streets, i once drove my mini car between two giants- a huge bus and an even bigger water tanker. As a result, I got squeezed and there was a big bang! Luckily I survived but my brand new car had to suffer a terrible dent.

Part reason for this myth to arise was probably because women were not given a shot at driving before and were confined in homes. But there are plenty of women behind the steering wheel, including me, who are completely debunking this myth nowadays. According to me, gender has absolutely nothing to do with driving abilities. I see myself, if not perfect, as a responsible driver and I am a woman. As far as the skill is concerned it is something that comes to you through practice alone, regardless of your gender. Craziest moment on wheels: I sometimes go on spontaneous long drives alone to have that quality time with myself. The monotony and frustration of work and home can sometimes get to you and those drives really do help me freshen up. That is the most crazy a mother of two can get.

I love my vehicle as it is compact, gives excellent mileage and it serves its purpose of getting me to my destination without any hassle. They are patient so they drive carefully giving extra attention to their vehicle, which they treat as their own babies. They are also careful of stray dogs and pedestrians, as basically women are kind. Craziest moment on wheels When I had just started taking my car on the road, the thrill of being behind the wheels was awesome but whenever I saw any big vehicle coming towards me I would be so frightened that I would stop at the side and let the vehicle pass.

Well jokes apart, I don’t think any vehicle would react differently whether a man is driving it or a woman. I think women are more conscious about driving rules and are very careful especially when there are others on board like children and elders. Hence, I firmly believe that if there were more women drivers on Nepal’s highway the accident rates would actually decrease. Furthermore, fewer women are involved in drinking and driving too. So, women are cautious drivers would be a better statement. Oh! And driving in Nepal really requires multitasking. You never know when a cow will stop in the middle of the road or when a kid pops up running in the middle with bikes overtaking from left and right. And, aren’t women actually the best multitaskers ? Craziest Moment on Wheels I have driven to Pokhara at 4 o’clock in the morning for a shoot, alone. This is the craziest one I can think of. Others can’t be mentioned in public as I might end up behind bars.

S

cooters are the best at providing a cheap and practical means of personal transport. Compared to other motorized vehicles they are low in maintenance, efficient, cost much cheaper and are easier to ride. They make for an ideal vehicle to affordably get around town. But these are not the only reasons as to why most women prefer scooters over motorcycles. First, a scooter can be ridden by a woman regardless of her clothing attire. No I didn’t really mean riding naked! Imagine a woman draped in a sari or a mini skirt trying to ride a motorcycle. And second, there’s that extra storage option in scooters which enables women to easily stash away their purse, vanity box or even a Chihuahua too. So scooters are not only much easier to ride than motorcycles, but make for versatile machines as well. For most young girls who have issues with mobility, scooters are in a way the ticket to personal freedom. Sure scooters do make sense for men too. Of course they aren’t for the same reasons as above. Scooters are less stressful to ride in heavy traffic conditions and there are very low running costs compared with a motorcycle. It also helps quite a lot of men in regularly bringing the family shopping home or ferrying the multiple 60 AUTOLIFE

kids to school. Then there’s the vintage scooter enthusiasts who will settle for nothing else than the few timeless Vespa’s running around town. Apparently, the heavy influence of Korean pop culture among our teenagers also seems to make it cool and cute for boys to ride a scooter. Scooters have now become a popular means of transportation for the young and old alike. There are many different makes and brands of scooters available in the market. But with the variety of choices in the market, zeroing on one can be quite a daunting task. Today when you think automatic scooters in Nepal, the first company that strikes your mind is Honda, with their highly popular Dio dominating a huge chunk of sales in the scooter segment. Honda makes the most reliable scooters with the best finishes, and the company has a widespread dealer network. Apart from the Dio, Honda also has the Activa and Aviator scooter in its line-up. So Hero Moto Corp, now as a separate entity from Honda, only has the Pleasure as a scooter in its stable. #Before you get yourself a scooter, first make sure that you know how to ride one. For girls, we highly recommend getting hold of a boyfriend who can sneak out his sister/mom’s scooter and teach you how to ride one. Otherwise learn to ride on a relative or friend’s scooter. #You’ll need a motorcycle license to buy a scooter. Previously, it was not compulsory to possess a license. But now, new regulations have made it mandatory to have a license before buying a new scooter. #Look for a scooter of your choice. The engine capacity of most scooters available In Nepal are generally between 100-150cc. Smaller capacity ones makes sense if your riding only involves short commutes around the city. But if your commute involves travel on long stretches around the

city, it’s advisable to get the higher capacity scooters. #Try to avoid second hand scooters. Scooters generally have a shorter lifespan compared to motorcycles and new ones are priced reasonably too. If your purchase has to be a second hand scooter, find one that is still under warranty. Buying a used scooter can save you money, but the risk of unforeseen repairs is a real possibility. #Just because scooters are cheaper, it does not mean that you should not invest in a decent helmet. You may not want to use a full face helmet on a scooter. But make sure that you get one which safely covers your head and well protects your eyes from road particles. #Check the storage areas in the scooter. Make sure that it’s more than enough to accommodate all those essentials that you usually carry along. #While buying a new scooter, try buying during seasonal or festive periods when dealers offer discounts and special offers on certain models.

BEING A WOMAN RIDER

T

The day had finally come. I was going to I remembered the time when I was logically begin riding all on my own. Amidst the chaos of yelling cops and examiners, there were two distinct I came to realize that with our natural groups of applicants. One group beauty of flora and fauna, we were also thought they were the next Grand blessed with natural speed breakers in Prix prodigies and the other was the form of dogs and cows. a bunch of nerve wrecked woeful souls, like me. Anyways, my countless hours of practicing the slalom riding, coupled with the motivating factor and my puppy look worked. Hurray, I was the proud recipient of a legal riding license! I were right after all and most definitely on thought the world was now all mine. this observation. But as I mentioned earlier, it turned out that my ordeals weren’t really limited to parental whims and governmental formalities. Not that I didn’t pass my riding license tests with flying colours, but once I ventured out on the streets on my own, the real-life situation was totally different. How on earth did the road traffic look so normal earlier when I was the pillion rider? Probably because I was so engrossed being the wise back seat driver and making the hapless driver a subject of ridicule on his/her driving skills.

The motivational thoughts of whizzing around uninterrupted on the new widened roads which I had envisioned during my license test also came to a braking halt (pun intended). I came to realize that with our

natural beauty of flora and fauna, we were also blessed with natural speed breakers in the form of dogs and cows. Of course not to forget my fellow homo sapiens too, who somehow seem to have a lot of faith on the reflexes of the drivers/riders, and take it for granted that we will stop immediately to let their almighty selves pass at any portion of the road. Then there is the group of hot shots (probably belonging to the Grand Prix segment mentioned earlier) who are always cutting across you on their modified bikes, sitting obnoxiously on their gas tanks and putting their manhood at risk. The portion of road which I need to frequent daily is the stretch between Lainchaur and Narayan Gopal Chowk. From my experience, this road definitely takes the Oscar for the most harrowing of all experiences ever since I set foot in the wonderful world of rolling on wheels. To navigate through this road, one needs to be gifted with the skills of a tight rope artist; the rope being the white line in the centre of the road. Due to perpetual jam on both sides, the only way to take advantage of your two wheel status is to sneak in between both clogged lanes. But alas, the same thought occurs in the minds of two wheeler drivers coming from the opposite direction too. So I leave the rest of the riding to your imagination, and sign off pondering, “If life is easy and everything is coming your way, you’re probably on the wrong lane”.

hey say that it’s a man’s world! The world of motorsports is really no different as it is largely a male domination activity with major world class competitions focused on further glorifying the capabilities of men. Well, before drawing any conclusions on us being a sexist in

nature, try recalling yourself the names of at least five women who has made some impact in the world of motorsports. I bet that even hardcore feminists will fail to give the required answers. Yes, most of us have hardly heard of women in motorsports. But there are in fact quite a lot of women who have left no stone unturned in leaving their mark

in this male dominated genre. These women have proved that there is more to than just a pretty face and truly deserve the limelight. So here we bring to you some of the women in motorsports, both old and new, who has managed to set a lasting impression in the motoring world and have succeeded in a sport largely dominated by men.

AUGUSTA & ADELINE VAN BUREN It was 1916. Women could not vote and we had yet to fight the two World Wars. But on the brink of America’s entry into World War I, the New York society sisters Augusta and Adeline Van Buren rode across the continent and into Mexico in 1916 to show that women could serve as military dispatch riders. Their daring was amazingly heroic, and in defiance of almost every standard that kept women in subservient positions to their husbands and homes.

These women have proved that there is more to than just a pretty face and truly deserve the limelight.

DANICA PATRICK Danica Patrick is one of the most recognizable racers in the world, due to both her accomplishments on the track and her ad campaigns and appearances off it. Patrick made her first IndyCar start in 2005 and earned her first series victory in April 2008 in Japan, becoming the first woman to win an IndyCar race. After balancing being a full-time competitor in the IZOD IndyCar Series with a ride as a part-time driver in the Nationwide Series, she made the leap full time to NASCAR in 2012.

JANET GUTHRIE Janet Guthrie is the first woman to earn a starting spot in the Indianapolis 500 (1977) and the Daytona 500 (1977), where she was Top Rookie. She had 13 years of experience on sports car road-racing circuits, building and maintaining her own race cars, before being invited to test a car for Indianapolis. Her ninth-place finish in the Indianapolis 500 (1978), with a team she formed and managed herself, was the best by a woman until 2005. She was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2006.

LOUISE SMITH When Louise Smith started racing cars, most girls weren’t even allowed to drive. From her first wild adventure behind the wheel of her daddy’s Ford to the dangers and thrills of stock-car tracks across the country, Louise fearlessly paved the way for women in racing and became a NASCAR legend! BESSIE STRINGFIELD Bessie Stringfield was 16 when she climbed aboard her first bike, a 1928 Indian Scout. In the 1940s, she completed eight solo cross-country tours across the United States and served as a U.S. Army motorcycle dispatch rider. Back then, you really had to be fearless, to serve your country as an Army motorcycle dispatch rider. It took even more than bravery, to solo across the country on a motorcycle. To really up the risk factor, do it as a black teen-aged female in the 1930s, when racial prejudice was still the unofficial attitude of the nation!

PATRICIA ANN MOSS-CARLSSON Patricia Ann Moss-Carlsson was one of the most successful female auto rally drivers of all time, scoring 3 outright wins and 7 Podium Finishes in international rallies. Taught to drive at the age of 11 by her elder brother, the great motor racing driver Sir Stirling Moss, Pat Moss was a confident driver of Land Rovers on the family farm by the time she was 17. She was crowned European Ladies’ Rally Champion five times (1958, 1960, 1962, 1964 & 1965).

MARYEVE DUFAULT Maryeve Dufault is a Canadian-American racing driver, model and advertising spokeswoman. Dufault’s father and brother raced motorcycles in Quebec. So naturally she began riding as a four year old, then racing motocross and turned to go-karts as an eight year old. So far she has competed in a variety of open-wheel series from Barber, Formula BMW USA, Formula Renault, Pro Mazda Star, NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, ARCA Racing Series to NASCAR Nationwide Series for Tony Marks Racing. JENNIFER JO COBB Jennifer Jo Cobb is a NASCAR driver running in the Nationwide and Camping World Truck series. She has also run a limited schedule in ARCA Racing Series and has competed in Nationwide Series events. Cobb also has her own fashion endeavour - driverboutique.com, to fund her effort as a Truck series owner/driver through her fashion lines. Cobb finished 17th in the 2010 Truck series to become the top finishing female in one of the top three NASCAR series standings.

PATTY MOISE Patty Moise is a former NASCAR driver. She drove in five Winston Cup races from 1987 to 1989, and 133 Busch Series races from 1986 to 1998. Patty loved speed and going fast. Interestingly, her family’s car insurance was cancelled when she was young because of all the speeding tickets and accidents she accumulated. Patty is married to fellow racer Elton Sawyer. Patty is one of a few women to drive a NASCAR as a full time job. She holds many records for women in NASCAR racing.

HELENE DELANGLE Helene Delangle was a fearless and passionate woman who lived for challenges. A racer of thrilling audacity, Helene competed in numerous Grand Prix, was the only woman to drive the treacherous American dirt tracks and speed bowls in the 1930s, and set new land-speed records until a notorious accident in Brazil nearly ended her racing career. Sadly in the 1949 war era, she was mysteriously denounced by a hostile fellow driver as a Gestapo agent. Eventually, Hellé Nice would die in obscurity, the shadow on her reputation causing her name to be written out of racing history. www.autolife.com.np

T

his ride was the beginning of Project Red Bull Pedal Himalayan, organized by Gear Venture Bike Nepal Pvt. Ltd in association with Yeti Airlines as the official airlines partner and Sacred Summits as the trekking adventure partner. The chief aim of this project was to explore the best trails in Nepal for local riders as well as international riders. And what place would be better to start off with than the beautiful Rara Lake. So we were off, me (on my Trek 6900), my photographer and a porter from Jumla. Rara Lake (Rara taal) is the biggest lake of Nepal and has rightfully claimed the title of the Nymph of Heaven. Regarded as one of the finest location in Nepal for trekking, Rara is prosperous in biodiversity and living culture as well as its abundance in flora and fauna, a vibrant local culture and beautiful scenic views that you wouldn’t find anywhere else. And Rara Lake, ringed by pine and juniper forests sits in its beauty in the Rara National Park at an altitude of 2990m above sea level. In our attempt to explore unexploited beauties of Nepal on wheels, we decided to start off by riding the virgin tracks to the Nymph of Heaven. Riding the “donkey trails” was a tough task that few would dare to undertake, especially on XC bikes instead of All Mountains, which would have made the task a lot easier. But the beauty of the landscape was worth every drop of sweat and more. For the first day of the ride, we landed in Jumla Airport at around 2:30pm. The airport is at an altitude of 2350meter from sea level. Since it was already mid day, we were in a hurry to start the ride. So, after a brief lunch, we began our ride to Tharmaare then to Neauri Ghat (2,700 m) via Chehere. Before reaching Neauri Ghat we had to go through the Danphe Lekh Pass for which we had to ride upto an altitude of 4000m. Here, we spent the night, weaning off the exhaustion from the day’s tiresome ride. The food was not that bad either, if you consider the value for money. At Rs.100 we got a full plate of the local meal: daal, bhat, tarkaari and achar. We also got an opportunity to try their local herbal tea, which somehow accelerated our appetite extensively, leaving us hungry in just a couple of hours.

After some well deserved rest, the second day started off early and we were on the trails by 6:30am in the morning. It was a beautiful ride to Chautha where we had our lunch. Then we rode to Bhulbhulay where we spent the night. Although the places to stay may be far from what you would want, the rates were very cheap, ranging from Rs.25 to Rs.50. On the third day we rode to Ghurchi Lagana Pass which is at a height of 3,437m. The locals showed us a “highway” upto where vehicles could reach. But it looked more of a landslide than a highway to me. Nevertheless, we took a “khacchad bato” to get to Rara Lake at Chucche Marapit. This is at a height of 5100m above sea level. After taking in the beauty of the Nymph of Heaven, we returned to Neauri Ghat for the night. However, on our way back we ran into some trouble. Our photographer, who was suffering with slight problems with the altitude, got a nose bleed. And with no emergency service in sight, we had to rush back down to a lower altitude. This just goes to show, if you are not capable of adapting to high altitudes then you have to go in a 4-wheel drive (a Tractor) or a horse. Most of the trails can be ridden, if you’re ready to risk it. However, 25% of the ride will have to be done on foot, carrying the bike. It’s our project to pedal around the Himalaya and we greatly hope that people will join us for more extreme and adventurous rides. We are ready to take you all the way there. So tune your Bike and be ready to pedal with us.

It’s almost been a year since I’ve been riding my trusty hard tail, and she has been there through thick and thin. The tarmac in the city is usually child’s play and it gladly munches away on the occasional off road. I have had no complaints about it and still don’t. However, I have certainly given some serious thought to switching to full suspension now.

When I mentioned to Jenny and Santosh dai (business partners who operate Himalayan Single Track) that I had been riding my hard-tail for quite some time, they asked me to tag along in one of their rides. Better yet, I could try out one of their full suspension Giants on the ride. Since it would be a nice change to try out a full suspension, and because the guys at Himalayan Single Track seemed like a fun group to go riding with, I was in. On the day of the ride, not too accustomed to early mornings, I was the last person to arrive at Himalayan Single Track. Jenny, Santosh dai, Anna, Caroline, Narayan, Aayman, Bishnu dai and Bhanja were waiting for me. So, I quickly swapped my hard tail and straddled the full suspension and we were on our way. Switching to full-suspension was more different than I had expected. I could tell right from the get-go that the Giant would be much gentler on the body. Much smoother around the edges, I could feel the difference while pedaling through the

pitch road to Mudkhu via Balaju. It did not, however, make the distance feel any shorter. Not really used to long rides, the road to Mudkhu felt never ending, especially with the trucks smoking up the roads. I did my best to try and stay ahead of the girls but it was only a matter of time before they were pedaling past me. But I wouldn’t complain too much because the scenery was suddenly much more interesting. Finally, we stopped for tea at the police check point in Mudkhu. After a brief respite, which I very much appreciated, we were back on our bikes. Making our way off the tarmac, it was finally time to

hit the dirt; some of us took this a little too seriously though. A short uphill ride from the tea shop led us to a beautiful single track that overlooked the hills of Mudkhu Bhanjyang. This was where the full suspension actually came into play. It was much easier on the knees and the bum while tackling the rough terrain. Taking in the beauty of the lush green forests around the track was much more entertaining when you are at that much ease. Downhill riding was a totally different experience as well. En route, we faced a technical drop which was something that I tried for the first time. For safety reasons, some of us decided to carry the bike down the hill and for good reasons too. It was difficult to embark on the drop when you see a seasoned rider drop face first at such speeds. And that was exactly what happened. Right before it was my turn to face the drop, Bishnu dai went flying off the track. Luckily, he got away with a few bumps and bruises. My descent was a sight to see. I was advised to go easy on the brakes, take up speed and not look at the ground but at where I wanted to end up. In my mind, I preferred to keep my eyes on the track, which did not seem too friendly. Also, letting go of the brakes was also not on my list of things to do. So I steadied myself and descended at an embarrassingly slow pace. I have no regrets as I returned with every body part intact. After the exhilarating ride, we made our way back to the tea shop for yet another round of tea, chana, anda(eggs) etc (yes, riding makes you hungry). By the time we got back to the shop, we were slightly happier and more energetic than when we left. Well, maybe except for me, I didn’t want to part with my Giant. Maybe it is time for a switch?

HOW TO FIX A BROKEN CHAIN 1

Tools Required:

• Chain Tool (Picture Tools) • Clothes you are willing to dirty Unless you do a lot of mountain biking, it isn’t often that you’ll need to repair or change your bike chain. However, chains do break now and then, and being able to fix one on the street is no harder than fixing a flat tire if you are prepared. The most common way is by pedaling full force at the same moment that you are shifting your front derailleur. If you are wearing nice clothes that you care about, it’s probably best to lock your bike and take the bus. Come back later with your old jeans and fix it then. Fixing a chain is the dirtiest job there is on a bike.

STEP 1: Flip your bike over so you can access your chain easily. (PIC 1)

STEP 2: Take a look at the two broken ends. You’ll need to remove two segments of the chain because the two types of segment alternate. If you just remove one segment, you can’t reattach it. (PIC 2) Place the chain into the groove in the chain tool at the spot you want to disconnect. If you are replacing a worn but non-broken chain, you’ll do the same thing here.

Turn the screw on the chain tool to start pushing the pin out of the chain. Be careful to keep the pin on the chain tool lined up with the pin on the chain; they sometimes like to slip around a bit.

STEP 4:

Don’t push the pin all the way out! Only push it just far enough so that the chain comes apart (PIC 5). You need to leave the last bit of the pin in the chain so you can push it back in later.

STEP 5: Now feed the chain back onto your sprockets. It helps a lot if you have a friend who can hold the two ends in position while you reattach them.

STEP 6: Now use the chain tool to push the pin back in (PIC 6). The trickiest part is to keep the tool lined up with the pin. Note: if you are putting on a new chain here, many new chains come with a special link that makes the first-time installation possible without pushing any pins in.

STEP 7: Once the pin is in, the link you just attached will be stiff. Work it back and forth, until it loosens enough to bend.
