BAJAJ PULSAR 200NS GETS COLOUR UPGRADES To keep the enthusiast crowd busy till the launch of the eagerly awaited Pulsar 375, Bajaj has launched a few more colour options for the existing Pulsar NS200 range. Now, you have four colour options to choose from - a single tone Ebony Black and three dual tone options namely, Passion Red-Black, Safire Blue-Black and Metallic White-Black. The new Pulsar NS however does not have any other significant changes. The 200NS boasts of the same 200cc 4-stroke 4-valve engine with three spark plugs which makes 23 bhp of power and 18.3Nm of torque. A 6-speed gearbox handles the transmission duties. Yes this is not as exciting as an all new product launch, but this should be good news for people looking to buy a new Bajaj Pulsar 200NS.

NEXT GEN HONDA CITY UNVEILED The fourth-generation Honda City has been unveiled in India. To be available with both petrol and diesel motors, the new City will be powered by improved versions of the 1.5 i-VTEC petrol and the 1.5 i-DTEC diesel motors. Like the current model, both engines will be coupled to manual gearboxes with an additional five-speed automatic for the petrol variant on the cards. Honda says the new City has been developed keeping three key aspects in mind; advanced sporty design, best comfort and best fuel efficiency. In terms of features, the new City gets a double-DIN audio system with LCD display, Bluetooth, Aux-in and USB connectivity, eight speakers, cruise control, push-button start, four phone charger points, sunroof and a segmentfirst in the form of touch-operated automatic aircon controls. Bigger and better than before, the new City now has the longest wheelbase in its class and this directly translates into better interior space. India is the first country where the new City will be manufactured and sold before it reaches to the shores of 60 countries. Prices for the new City will be revealed when it hit showrooms in India by January 2014.

INDIAN CAR OF THE YEAR 2014 Hyundai Motor's new hatchback model, the 'Grand i10' has secured the title of Indian Car Of The Year 2014, the country's highest automotive award. The ICOTY jury consisted of Girish Karkera and Sriram Narayanan (BBC Top Gear India), Vikrant Singh (IMOTY '14 Chairman), Bertrand Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Souza and Shubhabrata Marmar (Overdrive), Yogendra Pratap and Rahul Ghosh (Auto Bild), Bob Rupani and Gautam Sen (Auto India), Dhruv Behl and Ashish Jha (AutoX), Pablo Chaterji, Rohin Nagrani and Kartik Ware (Motoring), Aspi Bhathena and Sarmad Kadiri (Car India & Bike India), Sirish Chandran (Evo India) and Muralidhar Swaminathan (Hindu Business Line). The nominated cars were judged on various parameters such as price, fuel efficiency, styling, comfort, safety, performance, practicality, and technical innovation, value for money and suitability for Indian driving conditions. Hyundai, which has sold over 35,000 Grand i10 across India within three months of launch, beat models like Honda Amaze and Ford EcoSport to win the title.

INDIAN MOTORCYLE OF THE YEAR 2014 The Royal Enfield Continental GT has won the prestigious Indian Motorcycle of the Year (IMOTY) 2014. The Indian Motorcycle of the Year (IMOTY), along with JK Tyre, presented this most prominent award for motorcycles in the Indian automotive industry. The top four contenders for the IMOTY included the Royal Enfield Continental GT, KTM Duke 390, Hyosung Aquila Pro and Mahindra Centuro. The Continental GT was declared the winner by six of the nine jurors, due to its looks, stability, and rideability and also for the fact that it was reasonably priced. The Continental GT CafĂŠ Racer is powered by an air-cooled, fuel-injected 535cc motor offering maximum power of 29.1 bhp at 5100 rpm and peak torque of 44 Nm at 4000 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5 speed gearbox offering excellent ratios both where city and highway riding is concerned. 18

NEW HESKETH 24 REVEALED The Hesketh 24 is the first new model from British firm Hesketh Motorcycles, which will be available in a limited run of 24 examples when it goes on sale in February 2014. The brand was recently bought by Paul Sleeman and the Hesketh 24 is a 1950cc 56-degree V-twin with 120bhp. Taking inspiration from Hesketh’s illustrious Formula 1 roots, the Hesketh 24 uses James Hunt’s F1 Grand Prix winning ‘24’ car as the basis of the bike’s styling. The Hesketh 24 features top quality branded components such as Ohlins suspension, Beringer brakes and BST carbon fibre wheels. The design of the bike itself is centred around the big V-twin muscle at the heart of the bike, with overhead air intakes inside the tank above and a 22.7-litre fuel cell mounted below the engine. To stay true to some original Hesketh features the front light offers a modern half cowl and the top tank follows the distinctive Hesketh shape.

HONDA VEZEL TO BEGIN SALES Honda will start selling the new Vezel SUV in Japan soon. The all-new Vezel SUV was revealed at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. It will be offered with a 1.5-litre petrol, 1.5-litre diesel motor and a hybrid-variant option in Japan. The hybrid variant will be equipped with SPORT HYBRID i-DCD, Honda’s next-generation Hybrid System that combines a 1.5-litre direct injection engine with a high-output motor to deliver high power equivalent to that of the 2.0-litre engine. The Vezel will also get additional features such as an electronic parking brake, and automatic brake hold function. The Vezel is equipped with high-quality interiors with coupe-like personal space for the front seats and, thanks to the original centre-tank layout there’s a large cargo space with 453-litre capacity. The new Honda Vezel SUV is due to be launched in Europe in 2015. The Vezel, originally planned to be introduced in India in 2015, is unlikely to be manufactured in India as of now. Honda says importing the Vezel to the Indian market would work out to be too expensive.

THE NEW MERCEDES C-CLASS Mercedes Benz has officially revealed everything that you need to know about the all-new C-Class. The 2015 Mercedes Benz C-Class, like always, is a ‘baby-Benz’ in the true sense of the word. Crafted to be a miniature version of the flagship S-Class, the engine line-up includes one diesel and two petrols. The diesel option comes in the form of the C220 BlueTEC which employs a 2.2-litre oiler that produces 170 bhp of power and 400Nm of torque. The petrol lineup includes a C180 with a 156 bhp of power and 250Nm of torque capable 1.6-litre engine and a C200 which uses a 2.0-litre, 184 bhp/300 Nm engine. On the inside, the C-Class gets one of the best-looking cabins in the current Mercedes-Benz line-up. The interiors feature a high-rise, flowing centre-console, while the switches seem like they came straight out of their flagship S class. The three-spoke steering wheel is new, while the air-con vents, the infotainment display and the instrumentation are a clear evolution of the units seen in the new generation Mercs. The infotainment system features the latest COMAND interface and uses the car’s body-shell as a resonance chamber for the speaker setup.

AUDI UNVEILS R18 LE MANS RACER Audi has officially revealed full details of its 2014 WEC LMP1 car, the car Porsche and Toyota will try to beat at next year’s Le Mans 24hr race. It looks the same but there’s a raft of innovation underneath. There’s still a mid-mounted V6 diesel engine powering the rear wheels and a flywheel that stores braking energy from the front axle and reapplies it via a motor-generator-unit. But new for 2014 is the fact that the V6’s turbo is now linked to an electrical machine that converts the thermal energy of the exhaust gas into electric energy. This energy is also stored in the flywheel storage system too, so whenever the car accelerates the extra power can flow back to the front or to the electric turbo. The body itself is 10cm slimmer than last year’s car, with slimmer wheels (that reduce drag), though due to new regs the car is actually higher than before, with a larger cockpit. There’s no diffuser up front either, but a front wing with a flap, while at the back, exhaust gases blowing the rear diffuser have been banned. We’ll see it in action when the 2014 WEC season kicks off on 20 April, 2014 at Silverstone.

HYUNDAI REVEALS 2014 WRC CAR

Hyundai is no stranger to the world of WRC, having participated in the sport from 2000 to 2003. It’s been a year since Hyundai first announced its intention to return to the world of WRC and since then we’ve seen the Korean automaker slowly build up its team, establish a new motorsport centre in Germany and start development of a brand new WRC car. Now the covers have come off Hyundai’s new WRC car, the 2014 i20 WRC, which will race under the new Hyundai Shell World Rally Team banner. The i20 WRC will make its competition debut at the Rallye Monte Carlo in January 2014, the opening leg of the 2014 WRC season. Two cars will be fielded and drivers will include Thierry Neuville, Dani Sordo, Juho Hänninen and Chris Atkinson. Michel Nandan will serve as team principal for the squad, which is based in Alzenau, Germany. Current WRC regulations call for cars measuring no more than 12.8 feet in length and powered by 1.6-liter four-cylinder engines, so the i20 fits the bill perfectly. Its return underlines its growth strategy, particularly in Europe where WRC is still very popular. Additionally, Hyundai boasts that the technology transfer from WRC to road-going vehicles makes competing in the sport a shrewd and logical choice.

It was held on 27th December, 2013 at Hobnob Garden Restaurant in Bhaktapur. RiderzNepal.com is a web based community dedicated to promoting motorcycling and its various aspects in Nepal with the main objective to promote the culture of safe motorcycling. The event kicked off with a road safety awareness and event promotion rally around Bhaktapur, with enthusiastic motorcyclists joining the disciplined convoy led by Honda CBR250R motorcycles. In collaboration with the Traffic Police, a photo exhibition on the importance of Road Safety was organized within the event premises and Himalayan Customs, a company dealing in the sale of motorcycle accessories, had set up shop as well. In between, the importance of Road Safety was highlighted via an informative presentation by professional Safety Instructors from Syakar Safety Riding Training Center, some interactive quiz sessions related to motorcycles were held at frequent intervals

It highly focused on educating the importance of road safety awareness when riding motorcycles, through the attraction of a musical night. Owner’s Review Although it hasn’t even been a year since I bought my Skoda Rapid Elegance, I have been very happy about my purchase. I used to be a SUV fanatic and I owned a couple of them in the past, but I felt like it was time for a change. Also, the previous dealers of my vehicle were giving me a hard time in terms of availability of spare parts, which really bothered me because they weren’t living up to the guarantees they made while marketing the vehicle during the sale. Since Skoda was a reputed name, I thought it would be a good choice while making the shift from a jeep to a sedan. In fact, I got my car on an exchange offer, so I didn’t have to cough up too much money either.

It hasn’t let me down, not in terms of breakdowns or experience. My birth home is in Panauti and I drive up there pretty often. It is a pleasure to drive on the highway because of its stability. Even on the roads of Kathmandu which are a nightmare to drive on, the Skoda Rapid fares surprisingly well. I love the shape and the entire exterior design of the Skoda and the interiors match the perceived quality. I also think the car perfectly suits my personality. The after sales services provided by Skoda are also very satisfactory; by far the best that I have personally experienced. Most companies only market their products in the beginning with various promises and guarantees. But Skoda has fulfilled their part of the bargain till date and I don’t have any complaints yet. So, I am fairly confident that I will not have to store my car for months, waiting for it to be repaired or for availability of spare parts.

And just when we thought this was it, Hyundai has introduced another grand entry into this segment. In their quest for new thinking and new possibilities, Hyundai has added the Grand i10 to their hatchback fleet and this one sits right between the i10 and the i20. So how does the new Grand i10 really stack up in the competitive hatchback segment? We put it through its paces to find out. EXTERIORS The Grand i10 continues with Hyundaiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fluidic design theme and further improvises on it with well defined creases and sharp lines all around the car. Swept-back headlamps and a big hexagonal grille with chunky fog lamps add character to the front. The side has an aerodynamic sloping window line and the roof rails along with the two-tone eight spoke alloy wheels lend a youthful and upmarket vibe to the Grand i10. The rear is also equally attractive with the wraparound fluidic tail-lamps and a sporty spoiler. Attention to detail has been highlighted quite well all around the car. The Grand i10 is a pretty looking car no matter which angle you look at it from and it would be safe to say that this is the sportiest looking hatchback to have rolled out from the Korean manufacturerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s base in India. spacious cabin with enough legroom and headroom both at the front and the rear. The interior of the Grand i10 has an all new design and looks refreshingly different compared to its siblings. The two-tone black and biege dashboard has been laid out neatly to give it out a very premium feel. The overall fit and finish is definitely one of the best in the segment. The chunky leather-wrapped and adjustable steering wheel deserves a special mention as it not only gives out a very premium vibe, but has well well-placed controls for audio, telephony and trip meter. As has been the trend with Hyundai, the highest Asta variant we test drove comes loaded to the gills with all the premium features. You get everything from steering-mounted controls, driver seat height adjust, keyless entry, cooled glove box, auto-folding electrically adjustable mirrors, rear AC vents, rear 12v outlet, multi information display to a multimedia system that has USB and AUX ports, supports Bluetooth connectivity for upto five devices and has 1GB internal memory space for music and phone contacts. each of the doors, two large cup-holders behind the gearlever, and a cubbyhole for storing your phone just below the air-con controls. The rear scooped-out parcel tray has also been designed to hold commodities from flying forward in the event of sudden braking. On the safety front, Hyundai has always led the way when it comes to ensuring safety and security of passengers. The Grand comes with safety features like dual airbags, ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) central locking, engine immobilizer and rear parking sensor for enhanced convenience and easy parking. PERFORMANCE Under the hood is the same 1.2 litre Kappa engine that powers the i10. But Hyundai has made some changes like modifying the piston to improve engine breathing and the result is improved throttle response and much better overall performance. As soon as you thumb the starter, the engine fires us with an almost pin drop silence. It is amazing and commendable how there is hardly any noise, vibration and harshness protruding into the cabin. With a power output of 83 bhp and 114 Nm of torque, there is smooth power delivery and the engine responds instantaneously. The peppy low end performance with the light clutch further makes drivability in the city a relaxed affair. There is a strong mid-range punch as well, but at the higher end of the rev band the Grand i10 does lose some steam.

The transmission has been well sorted out with impressive precision and minimum resistance when shifting through the gears. The electrically assisted steering too does not feel as light as in the other Hyundai vehicles and weighs up well to give good confidence at high speeds. The Grand i10 tackles rough roads quite well and there’s sufficient ground clearance to ride over the biggest of speedbreakers. The company has managed to achieve a neutral balance in setting up the suspension and the Grand i10 doesn’t feel too soft or too stiff. It just feels right. Even when speeding through the various corners leading towards Nagarkot, the Grand i10 can remain composed with a fair amount of bodyroll. In terms of stopping power, the Grand i10 has well sorted brakes that are fairly strong with good ABS calibration. VERDICT The Grand i10 is a fine example of just how much Hyundai has been stressing on improving the quality of its products over the last few years. The Grand is a well-sorted package with good styling, convenient cabin space, premium features, refined engine and competitive pricing. It is clearly another winner in Hyundai’s portfolio that has been well prepared with all the core ingredients that our kind of hatchback buyers typically yearn for. And mind you, it’s not just us who speaking in favour of the Grand i10. The Hyundai Grand i10 only recently bagged the prestigious 2014 JK Indian Car of The Year (ICOTY) award. Paul Walker shot to fame as Brian O’Connor; an exconvict jailed for popping cars turned undercover detective who eventually becomes a credible street racer throughout the course of one of the biggest movie franchises - Fast and Furious. Adrenaline infused action sequences depicting Paul Walker pulling off astonishing heists assisted by a notorious crew in some of the fastest four wheelers in the movie industry had made him a staple character in the franchise. His portrayal of a protagonist fleeting authorities and at times helping them, established him as a loved anti hero, but the cars that were thrown into the mix really caught the attention of the motorheads. But unlike most celebrities who have a flashy lifestyle, Paul Walker preferred to lay low. However, he was as much a hero off screen as he was on it. His efforts and a hands-on approach to helping the victims plighted by

natural disasters through his non-profit organization named “Reach out Worldwide (ROWW)” are truly commendable. Sadly, he passed away while raising funds for the same charity. The star of 'The Fast and the Furious' movie franchise and a close friend Roger Rodas died together in Southern California after the Porsche Carrera GT they were in crashed violently into a tree and burst into flames. Paul and driver Roger Rodas were taking a break from Santa Clarita charity car show that Walker had organized and they had gone out for a short drive. With the seventh installment of the Fast and Furious franchise still pending, the sudden demise of the talented actor in the ironically fiery car crash came as a shock to the entire world. The franchise received a massive blow from the loss of Walker, and he will always be remembered and missed.

According to popular legend, once a Gurkha soldier’s Khukuri was drawn in battle, it had to taste blood. If not, its owner had to cut himself before returning it to its sheath. Such was the repute of the Khukuri and the Gurkhas wielding it: fierce and fearless with the alarming ability to strike terror into the hearts of the enemies. Well, that was back in the days. Things have largely changed in the modern context and now we have a Gurkha that’s on the softer side and rather begs to be ridden. Paying tribute to the fearsome soldiers of Nepal, the Gurkha 125 Café Racer is the latest motorcycle to be launched in Nepal. Styled with a nod to the Japanese racing heritage of the 1960s, this Chinese and Japanese collaborated motorcycle has been introduced in Nepal by Eco Auto Industry, bearing a name tag that’s sits close to the heart of every Nepali - GURKHA.

THE DESIGN At first glance, the Gurkha 125 Café Racer will not strike you as a fearsome beast, mainly because of its petite stature. Loosely based on the Honda CR110, the Gurkha staggers on the borderline of minimalism and is a compact Café Racer spec motorcycle. Low slung and stripped to the bare essentials, this motorcycle features a slim elongated tank on an eye catching red-coloured frame. Up front, the front fender mounts an 18 inch tyre with disc brakes and features telescopic front forks. Two classic analog gauges which display the speed, fuel level, blinkers and headlight high beam status have been strategically mounted on the retro styled round headlights. The tail end has a fender mounted with an old-fashioned brake light and a pillion seat cowl which completes the retro appearance. Of course, for those of you who wish to ride with a pillion, the seat can be changed to accommodate two people. The rear view mirrors though should have been replaced with bar end mirrors which is more typical to Café Racers. The rear set foot rest and forward placed handlebars allows you to crouch down and tuck in to get that Café Racer 42

feel. However, the handle bars are still not as low slung as you’d expect from a typical Café Racer. Overall, the retro styling has been tastefully done and the level of fit and finish is great. This machine is definitely a head turner!

THE RIDE The Gurkha 125 Café Racer is powered by a four-stroke air-cooled two-valve single cylinder engine which revs into life with a pleasing throaty rumble; either via an electric or kick starter. However, the grumble of the 125cc engine belies the actual power of the engine which has been rated at just a mere 10 bhp. So if you have been expecting fast rides at break neck speeds, which Café Racers are notorious for, you might want to look elsewhere. But, if you actually think about it, the power delivery is not too terrible for a small motorcycle that weighs less than 100kgs. Shift into gear and you will definitely feel a nagging lack in power. But keep the revs boiling, and the Gurkha begins to run faster. It is slim and light enough to slalom through tight traffic and once it gets rolling, it will gather a decent speed for in-city riding. The motorcycle feels more at home in city traffic because out on the highway you will terribly miss that extra power when needed to overtake other vehicles and powering smoothly through the corners. Braking on a whole could have been better. You will eventually stop, but it leaves to wonder whether the front disc brake is really doing its job properly. maybe a little too springy. On the brighter side, the transmissions seemed flawless and the ride was pretty stable throughout. We’d definitely suggest in changing the horns though, and investing in something more manly.

THE VERDICT In terms of aesthetic appeal, the Gurkha lives up to the Café Racer moniker with its slim and light build. It also delivers well on the Café Racer riding posture of tucking in your knees and crouching ahead to beat the wind resistance. We can definitely see a few enthusiasts acquiring the Gurkha and even more youngsters being tempted by its retro look. With its light frame and agility, it is also the perfect bike for beginners. But unlike how Café Racers are supposed to be, the Gurkha isn’t really a racer. Riding the Gurkha rather takes you back to a time when things were simpler and machines did not have much to fuss about. The motorcycle feels at home in our congested city traffic and does just enough to take you from café to café in our local context. Old school to the core, the Gurkha is a simple bike that delivers what it promises. True, it is priced at a higher end for a low capacity bike, but you won’t really find anything that compares to it at the moment. This is more of a motorcycle for the enthusiast, rather than your everyday commuter.

FLYING FINN MIKA HÄKKINEN

Very few racers in the world have managed to battle life threatening injuries in racing and return to the circuit to claim back-to-back world championship titles. It takes a lot of dedication and courage to take reigns over the haunting experience of a fatal crash. Never the one to have preferred to be in the limelight managing the global media, Mika Häkkinen is one such less spoken of Formula One legend, who let his flat out driving speak for itself. Born on September 28, 1968, in Vantaa, Finland, Mika started his racing career from Karting at the age of 5 when his parents hired a go-kart for him to try. Though he met with an accident on his very first lap, he was undeterred by his passion for racing. By 1986, he went on to become a fivetime Karting champion and caught the attention of Keke Rosberg, the 1982 F1 World Champion. Rosberg became Mika’s manager and prompted him to progress through the junior categories of single-seater racing. After his move into single-seater racing, he won three Scandinavian Formula Ford Championships, the Opel Lotus Euroseries Championship 48

and the 1990 British Formula Three title. The latter title got him promoted to Formula One racing by Team Lotus. He started his F1 Championship career in 1991 with Lotus-Judd team in car number 11. The US Grand Prix of 1991 was Mika’s debut in the Formula 1 Championship, but he had to retire from his very first race due to engine failure. However, the faltering Lotus team propelled his move to the powerful McLaren brand team in 1993 under Team Principal Ron Dennis. He was employed as a test driver for Ayrton Senna and Michael Andretti who were the race drivers. But after Michael was dismissed by the team, Mika was appointed the team mate for Senna. Mika then went on to out-qualify the superstar Senna on his debut, making himself a driver in demand. The following year Senna moved to Williams, and Mika was established as the number one driver at McLaren. Then came the horrific accident at 1995 when he encountered a lifethreatening mishap at the Adelaide circuit. his race car smashing into the barriers. He suffered a serious head injury in the impact and an emergency tracheotomy was performed in site while he was still in the cockpit, before transporting him to the hospital where his life hung in the balance for some time. If it wasn’t for the skills of FIA medical delegates led by Professor Sid Watkins, , Mika would have joined the likes of Ayrton Senna, Roland Ratzenberger and Karl Wendlinger who all lost their lives to horrific crashes in F1 racing. Not the one to give up, the determined Finn came back from adversity and duly recovered in time for the 1996 season to finish fifth in the Drivers’ Championship. By the end of 1997, McLaren had a competitive car because of an engine partnership with Mercedes-Benz. Then a season later, in 1998, he finished ahead of Michael Schumacher to clinch his first world title after an incredible head-tohead with Schumacher at Suzuka circuit. In 1999, he retained his title by finishing ahead of Eddie Irvine, who was Ferrari’s number two after Schumacher broke his

leg at Silverstone. Häkkinen had become just the seventh driver to achieve back-toback titles. At the end of the 2001 season, during his ninth year with McLaren, Häkkinen decided to take a year break from racing and announced a sabbatical. He was replaced by his young compatriot Kimi Raikkonen. In fact, he never came back to Formula One racing. In 2002, he called it an end to F1 by announcing his full retirement. However, he made a comeback in 2005 in the German Touring Cars DTM Series, a competitive motorsport with MercedesBenz. It was a successful stint with three race wins from 2005-2007. But he again announced his retirement from competitive motorsport and that was last we saw of him in a competitive racing season. Hailed as one of F1’s fastest drivers, Mika Häkkinen is truly amongst the most successful drivers in F1 history with 2 Championship titles and 20 Grand Prix Wins. He is also featured in the F1 top 10 all-time lists for pole positions and

Mika’s simultaneous pass of Michael Schumacher and Ricardo Zonta at the Spa’s Kemmel straight is hailed as the greatest overtake in modern F1. The history of Formula One from 1995 to 2001 was also defined by the rivalry between Mika Häkkinen and Michael Schumacher. Rivalries apart, both of them are now the brand ambassadors for Mercedes-Benz.

INTERIORS Inside, the Mirageâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dashboard and instrument cluster has been laid out neatly with an all-black theme. The centre stack has been given a glossy treatment for a more premium feel. Its interior set up is basic and minimalistic, but well-equipped. The top-spec Mirage has been well packaged with automatic headlights and rain sensing wipers, fog lights, power windows and mirrors, height-adjustable driver's seat, climate control, keyless entry with push-button start, multi information display and an extensive Multimedia unit with Bluetooth phone connectivity. The three-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel also features optional phone and audio controls, making it easy to listen to music and safer to take phone calls on the road. The Mirage is surprisingly accommodating for its size offering adequate headroom and decent legroom even for a six-foot plus passenger. The rear seatbacks can be split 60:40 and fold almost completely flat to expand the Mirageâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 235 litre boot space. The Mirage has a decent interior with a hint of class and comfortable functionality that should appeal well to any local buyer. SAFETY As far as safety is concerned, the Mirage comes with six airbags (dual front, side and curtains), anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and electronic stability control that prevents loss of control while cornering at high speeds, among other active and passive features. Security equipment is less comprehensive, but you do get an engine immobiliser. PERFORMANCE The Mitsubishi Mirage is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 78 bhp of power at 6000rpm and 100 nm of torque at 4000rpm. The engine makes all the right lusty three-cylinder noises and has a decent power delivery. The freerevving three-cylinder engine had no trouble happily pulling the less than one-ton car along. Interestingly, the Mirage encourages you to save fuel with a green lit 'ECO' text that pops in the instrument cluster whenever you are cruising efficiently. The engine has been mated to a standard five-speed manual transmission which at times do tend to click and clunk into gear rather than sliding smoothly. The steeringâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s weighting though is effortlessly light and with one of the tightest turning circle in its segment at 4.6m, the Mirage is very easy to manoeuvre around

the city. It has a soft suspension set-up thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good at soaking up minor imperfections in the road surface. But sharper hits like potholes and provoke a coarse reaction from the suspension, though corrections are quick and accurate. The Mirage also feels reasonably well planted and stable, making it feel predictable and confidence inspiring. On the economy side, Mitsubishi claims an outstanding fuel mileage of 21km per litre. VERDICT Hatchbacks occupy the most competitive segment in our four-wheeler industry and the introduction of the Mirage marks Mitsubishi's entry into the segment. The Mirage has generous equipment on offer, outstanding fuel economy, spacious cabin, moderately powered engine and a great brand value to boot. In short, the Mirage is a car that doesn't over-promise and doesn't under-deliver. But when compared to the leaders in the segment, it leaves some more room for improvisation and does feel the heat from more affordably valued competitors. Since consumers are now spoiled for choices with a plethora of options in the hatchback segment, it will not be easy for Mitsubishi to topple the class-leaders at its current price range. Nevertheless, the Mirage marks the onset of new beginnings in a different segment for the rugged brand.

Now roadtrips are what we live for and any excuse to be away from office and out on the road has us raring to go any given day. So when Tata Motors Nepal offered us to visit Pokhara on not one, but two of their Tata Vista D90 hot hatchbacks, we instantly got hold of the keys. Powered by a 1.3 litre Quadrajet diesel engine that puts out 90bhp of power and 200nm of torque, the Tata Vista D90 is one of the fastest and most stylish hatchbacks currently available on sale in Nepal. It makes for a potent tool to attack the highway with its perfect combinations of eye-catching looks, torquey performance and frugal diesel consumption. Already impressed with the Vista D90 when we had it over for our test review, the roadtrip ahead definitely looked exciting. To make the best of the day, we skipped our regular late morning wake-up rituals and hit the road at the crack of dawn. It turned out to be a good idea as we managed to avoid the notorious traffic jam from the valley exit point at Nagdhunga till Naubise, though it was still a bumpy ride with the 20km downhill stretch beaten and broken down as usual. However, the comfortable cabin of the Vista D90 and the 2-din touchscreen multimedia stereo system ensured that our spirits weren't dampened. The multimedia controls on the steering further ensured that we were tuned to our favourite sound tracks at the flick of a button, without any need to divert attention away from the road ahead. As soon as we crossed Naubise, we gave the 62

hot hatch the pedal to the medal. And run it did, the Vista D90, showing speeds in excess of 100 kmph easily without much stress and whenever the roads allowed. With the enthusiastic driving that the Vista D90 allowed, we managed to complete the 200kms drive to Pokhara from Kathmandu by early afternoon. We then straight away headed to the Pokhara Thakali Kitchen for lunch. This cosy eatery located besides TrekO-Tel Hotel is a highly recommended place if you seek for a great Thakali set meal in a neat and clean ambience. Ever since we have been a regular here whenever in Pokhara, it has never disappointed. After having our fill of the excess helpings of the meal, we drove off towards the Waterfront Resort at Pamey, which is just a few minutesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; drive from the touristy hustle bustle of the Lakeside. The Waterfront Resort lies on the tranquil rural northern shore of the beautiful Fewa Lake and with the supremely comfortable, airconditioned rooms, each with a lake-view balcony, it is the perfect place to relax and unwind.

Pokhara also boasts of plenty of other tourist attractions like the Fewa Lake, Begnas Lake, Rupa Lake, Taal Barahi Temple, Davis Falls, Bat Cave, Gupteshwor Cave, World Peace Pagoda, Tibetan Refugee Camps, International Mountain Museum, etc. But having already seen most of this beautiful lake city on previous visits, we preferred to laze around the hotel premises and relax before setting out for the evening fun at the popular Busy Bee CafĂŠ in Lakeside. This roadtrip also being AutoLife magazineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2nd Anniversary celebration outing, we

made the best of the night, with the drinks and food flowing in till the closing hours at the pub, over some good music played by the in-house live music band. The next day, the man above had heard our desperate prayers. We woke up to clear blue skies with one of the best mountain views we had ever witnessed in any of our trips to Pokhara. So over the fine buffet breakfast at the Waterfront Resort, we decided to drive towards Dhampus for better and closer views of the mountain

ranges. Dhampus is a small ethnic Gurung village strung out along a ridge and boasts of fantastic panoramic views of the iconic Machapuchre along with the Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Himchuli and Lamjung Himal mountain range. Situated at an altitude of 1750m above sea level, it lies at just some 30kms drive from Pokhara. After a fast 23km drive along the scenic and open Pokhara-Baglung Highway, we reached Phedi village and took the roughly 7km off-road detour for Dhampus. Since none of us had ever driven up here before, we were

not really sure if the off road ahead could be navigated by the Vista D90. But the Vista D90 being the kind of car that provokes your adventurous side, we took the leap of faith. Unfortunately, the road did not turn out to be in our favour; not really the kind where you would actually prefer taking a hatchback or sedan. However, not the ones to give up, we still pushed the D90 to carefully ride over the uneven obstacles and the turbocharger would spool out enough juice from the motor to trundle past some of the steep inclines. After the moderate off-road driving through sparse villages and short stretch of woods, a close faceto-face view of a long range of mountains greeted us on our arrival at Dhampus. It was a pretty sight to witness the panoramic views of the various mountain ranges from such a close distance, what easily felt like just at a stoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s throw. All that effort seemed worthwhile after all! We then explored around Dhampus for a while and returned back to Pokhara. After another heavy bout of lunch at the Pokhara Thakali Kitchen, it was time to unwind. And what better way to do it than hiring a spacious paddle boat with a good stock of chilled beer to boot and making merry in the middle of the massive Fewa Lake, soaking in the majestic views of the Machapuchre range. But ironically, a couple of hours later, all that wishful thinking didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t turn out to be our best ideas when we had to literally paddle-rush back to the shore to

As the evening closed in, we headed towards the Damside area which is popularly known for their various local Pork barbeque joints. After a good barbeque meal, we frequented the Busy Bee yet again for the customary evening round of drinks and called it an early night. It had been an amazing day, with a good drive experience backed up by the majestic scenic views. The next day we made a very quick morning start for the return trip back to Kathmandu. With the roads literally empty in the wee hours of the morning, the Vista D90 raced ahead effortlessly and we managed to cover up the 200km distance pretty soon.
