How do you sum up an experience that offers you simply everything you are obsessed about? After all, it’s not every day that you spot exotics from the likes of Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover, Harley Davidson, Moto Guzzi, Aprilia, Moto Morini and Triumph all under one roof. Thanks to the good folks at CG | MotoCorp, we were fortunate to experience one of the most anticipated auto shows in the world – Indian Auto Expo 2014. Visiting the Auto Expo was truly an eye-opener. The show was spectacular, with the best in the automobile business showcasing their best. It was an exciting show with new launches, radical concepts and some familiar favourites. The Auto Expo was truly a show fit to international standards and that’s definitely no mean feat. There is a lot our industry can learn from the expo, and we hope to experience a similar show here in Nepal as well soon enough.

Talking about the auto industry in Nepal, the last month was quite a dull one for us with hardly any new launches arriving in time for our reviews, except for the CrossFire XZ250RR motorcycle. And boy, it was fun! The CrossFire XZ250RR is definitely one of the most fun motorcycles to ride in the 250cc and below segment. Very few production motorcycles today offer the raw adrenaline packed performance that truly evokes your wild side, and the CrossFire just simply delivered that by a tank full. However, the coming months are looking exciting, with the launch of the RE Continental GT, Giant Reign X1 mountain bike, and the 2014 Toyota Corolla arriving soon along with the new Honda City expected to be here as well. Then there’s the big news - MV Agusta is coming to town!! The exotic motorcycle brand is a popular creator of some of the most desirable and stylish motorcycles in the world, with unsurpassed attention to detail in their design and production processes. We just can’t wait to get aboard one. And, all of this excitement shall continue with the adrenaline packed MotoGP and Formula 1 Championship season all set to start soon. Also, there’s our local motorcycle racing championship to look forward to with the second edition of Racemandu all set for some knee-down action. Lastly, don’t miss the featured adventurous story of the riders from Friends Of Royal Enfield (FORE), who rode their Royal Enfield motorcycle all the way from Kathmandu to Chennai on an epic 5000km trip.

AUTOLIFE NEWS: INTERNATIONAL

THE WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL BRAND Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Coca-Cola are probably the most valuable brand names in the world. But according to a new research, a tiny-volume supercar maker from a small town in northern Italy is apparently the most powerful brand in the world. Yes, it's Ferrari! Ferrari has been declared as the 'World's Most Powerful Brand' for the second year running by London-based experts Brand Finance. Maranello's finest was the only car company to achieve an 'AAA+' in the study, which takes into account customer loyalty, investment, and a whole bunch of other influential factors. Other car manufacturers BMW and Porsche achieved an ‘AAA' rating, with Toyota, VW and Mercedes also ranked highly. Surprisingly, though Ferrari sold fewer cars in 2013 than 2012, they made more money with the company recording a net profit of just over NRs. 3200 crores in 2013. The company stated that limiting supply was a deliberate strategy to maintain a high level of exclusivity and increase their cars' value over time. Ferrari's biggest market in 2013 was the USA, where the company sold 2,035 cars. In the UK are the biggest Ferrari fans in Europe, buying 677 cars last year. But just 205 Ferraris were sold in Italy.

VEHICLE PRICES IN INDIA GO DOWN In a relief to car manufacturers in India, Finance Minister PC Chidambaram, slashed excise duties on passenger vehicles in the recent Interim Budget 2014-15 by as much as 4%. The excise duty on small cars and motorcycles were reduced from 12 per cent to 8 per cent, while that on medium cars and SUVs have been reduced from 24 per cent to 20 per cent, and 30 per cent to 24 per cent respectively. This move has brought down prices of motorcycles, cars and SUVs, and is expected to further spur sales in the aggressive Indian Auto Industry. Vehicle manufacturers in India have already passed on this benefit to vehicle buyers with motorcycle prices being reduced in the range of IRs.1000 - IRs.5000, and car prices being slashed down in the range of IRs.10000 - IRs.200000, depending on the vehicle segments. Nissan, Honda Cars, Volkswagen, Mahindra, Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Honda Motorcycles and Hero MotoCorp are among the several manufacturers who have already released revised prices. Since most of the vehicles operating in Nepal are imported from India, we really hope that the local distributors here will pass on the benefits of this reduction to the Nepalese consumers as soon as possible. We expect motorcycle prices to go down in the range of NRs.4000 - NRs.18000 and four-wheeler prices to be reduced as much as NRs.35000 NRs.150000. Nevertheless, such a similar reduction in taxes by our local government, would definitely be a welcome gesture for our struggling auto industry where consumers are forced to pay more than twice the real worth of most vehicles, due to the high taxation policy. The Auto Industry, being one of the highest revenue generators for the Nepalese government, plays a significant role in our economic growth and directly or indirectly supports various other industries. Thus making vehicles more affordable should not only improve the consumer sentiment and fuel growth in the auto industry, but have a significant positive impact on various other dependent sectors as well. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

HENNESSEY VENOM GT REGISTERS NEW TOP SPEED The Hennessey Venom GT is now the only production car in the world that has managed to exceed the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport’s record top speed of 431 kmph. The Venom GT managed to clock in 435.31 kmph during a recent test run at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA. The Hennessey Venom GT is an American sports car manufactured by Texas-based Hennessey Performance Engineering. It is a modified Lotus Exige and powered by a twin-turbocharged 7.0L V8 engine that produces an incredible 1244bhp of power and 1566nm of torque. But despite setting the record for a production car, the Venom GT isn’t getting an official spot in The Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s fastest production car. The record-keeping group requires that the car be clocked over in opposite directions and then takes an average of the two speeds. And, at least 30 production model need to be made. The Venom GT though, could only make the run in a single direction and not more than 29 of the Venom GTs are going to be made.

LOTUS C-01 MOTORCYCLE ROAD READY Lotus has released the first clear images of the C-01, the company's first ever motorbike. However, the C-01 motorcycle is not designed, engineered or produced by Group Lotus plc, the world renowned sportscar manufacturer and engineering consultancy. The C-01 is produced under licence by Kodewa - the outfit that builds Lotus's Le Mans racer - and the design is from the pen of VW Group designer Daniel Simon and made with bits from the Holzer Group, which specialises in making things to go into inter outer space. Following two years of careful planning and intense development, the team of engineers has designed this unique high performance superbike. The C-01's raked-out front forks, long-wheel-base design and wider rubber at the back give it the look of a drag bike. It combines ample power via a 200bhp V-twin 4-stroke engine with the distinctive body design integrating carbon fibre, titanium and aerospace quality steel. No performance figures yet, but we're guessing that you'll have to hold on tight. The C-01 will be available in a range of liveries some of which pay homage to Lotus’ sporting pedigree. A customisation service is also available, limited only by the imagination of the client. With an exclusive production run of just 100 units, superbike collectors and fans of the Lotus brand will need to move fast to secure one.

MV AGUSTA DRAGSTER 800 UNLEASHED

BABY NINJA GOES SINGLE Kawasaki has revealed yet another little Ninja for Asia by pulling the covers off a revised Ninja 250. Called the Ninja 250SL, this new Kwacker sports a single headlight as opposed to the split units seen on all modern-day Ninjas. But the big news is, it now has a single cylinder engine that displaces 249cc. The new 250 makes 27.6bhp, which is roughly four horses down on the twin-cylinder 250. However, at 22.64nm, the SL's motor produces a little more torque. The motor is wrapped in an all-new steel trellis frame, which according to Kawasaki, will bless the SL with great flickability. The suspension consists of a 37mm telescopic front fork, teamed with a five-way adjustable 'UniTrak' rear monoshock. Stopping power is provided by disc brakes front and back, with the option of equipping the Mono with what Kawasaki says is the smallest ABS unit in the world. It has been fitted with wheels similar to the ones on the 250 and the 300, but here tyres are narrower and lighter. Overall, the SL's gotten rid of 20kgs of weight; it now weighs just 151kgs. So while the Mono doesn't make as much power, it makes up for that shortcoming with a substantial reduction in weight.

MV Agusta continues to expand its motorcycle range as the Brutale 800 Dragster takes a big step forward into the future. According to MV Agusta, the Dragster 800 is about a thrilling ride with a ‘pure essence, pure thrills’ design philosophy. The Dragster 800 is heavily based on the Brutale 800, sharing a hybrid steel trellis/aluminium alloy plate chassis, fuel tank, suspension, swingarm, exhaust and brakes (although the Dragster has the latest Bosch 9+ ABS system) and of course the three-cylinder engine. The new MV Agusta Dragster 800 cleverly wraps up the same 798cc three-cylinder engine with 125bhp and 81nm in the same chassis, but with some new bodywork for a hardcore take on a naked roadster. Despite so many of the bikes’ components being shared, the Dragster does look significantly different to the Brutale 800 thanks to the chopped off tailpiece and a whopping 200 section rear tyre which makes it appear a lot more aggressive. The Dragster also gets unique footrests and heelguards and also a redesigned front mudguard and light to make sure it looks different to the other models in the MV range. The bike has been priced around €13,490/-.

The bike was recently unveiled in Indonesia. No word yet on whether Kawasaki intends to bring this bike to other markets. 18

VICTORY MOTORCYLES RELEASES NEW BOBBER Victory Motorcycles has launched their newest model – the Gunner - which features a throwback bobber style. Victory’s early-release 2015 Gunner embraces the stripped-down ethic but retains elements that the company feels “serious riders” would want in a bobber-style production machine. The Gunner is built on Victory’s cruiser chassis – the same platform of the High Ball, Judge and Boardwalk – and utilizes the Freedom 106 engine that powers every bike in Victory’s line-up. To appeal to the ever-growing OEM bobber niche, the Gunner is stripped down to the basics. Besides the torquey engine cradled in its minimal chassis, the Gunner arrives with chopped front and rear fenders, smaller sidepanels, and one colour option – Suede Titanium. The new 24-spoke wheels are a nice touch and a 25-inch-high solo seat gives the Gunner its distinct look. The Victory Gunner is an outstanding cruiser motorcycle, a bobber that delivers an unmatched combination of style, performance and power that can only come from Victory Motorcycles. Victory expects this bobber to be further customized by its owner, and provides many accessories for it, including billet engine covers, Straight Stage 1 exhaust, V Drag Bars, and a solo luggage rack, to name a few. It has been priced t $12,999 in the USA.

NEW YAMAHA R125 FOR 2014 Yamaha has taken the wraps off the updated 2014 Yamaha R125. The new Yamaha R125 is powered by a liquid-cooled 125cc 4-stroke engine mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The short stroke high revving engine cranks out maximum power of 15 bhp @ 9000 rpm with torque figures rated at 12.4 nm @ 8000 rpm. The noticeable visual differentiation on the 2014 R125 are a set of new upside down front forks claimed to deliver enhanced stability and a new front cowl featuring a central air intake. Held together by a steel perimeter frame and an aluminum swingarm, the new R125 gets a redesigned rear linked monoshock. Rubber specs on the new R125 read a 100/80-17 front tyre and 130/70-17 rear tyre. It also sports a new radial front caliper and 297mm floating front disc for enhanced stopping performance, a pair of new thin “Y” spoke wheels for low unsprung weight and handling and a carbon finished front fender adds a racy touch to the 125cc. The new fully digital dashboard displays the necessary numbers that includes the speedometer with a bar type tachometer, fuel level, fuel consumption, distance and range trip meters. The new bodywork that is heavily inspired by the R6, give the 2014 Yamaha R125 a genuine big-bike look and feel with the slippery aerodynamic design.

ROYAL ENFIELD CONTINENTAL GT After wowing bike buyers in India and other international markets, Royal Enfield has finally launched the Continental GT in Nepal. The original RE Continental GT was first built in the 1960s as a cafe racer with an engine capacity of 250cc. So the current Continental GT takes inspiration from the cafĂŠ racers of that generation in its form and in its simplicity; and it captures the feeling of freedom, fun and responsiveness that riders were trying to achieve then and brings it into the modern context. Royal Enfield teamed up with UK based Xenophya Design to create the look for the bike. The signature GT body finish and the stretched out low-profile fuel tank with knee recesses provides a note of sophistication and elegance to the Continental GT. The contrasting chrome engine and the upswept exhaust put this motorcycle among some of the most visually appealing models in the market. Style meets functionality as the genuine clip-on bars, the flat sculpted racing seat and foldable footrests are all designed to prompt the rider to tuck their elbows in neatly. The new Royal Enfield features an

upgraded 535cc single cylinder aircooled Unit Construction Engine with a re-mapped ECU and lower inertia, all of which promises extra punch and responsiveness with a power of 29 bhp and 44 nm of torque. The bike comes with telescopic front forks and Paioli gas charged dampers at the rear. A Brembo floating disc brake at front and a smaller disc brake at the rear does the stopping duty. The frame of the bike is a dual cradle unit designed by Harris Engineering of the United Kingdom. The Pirelli Sport Demon tyres, frame, strong brakes and top quality suspension components makes sure that this fastest Royal Enfield is a sweet handler.

In a world that is increasingly looking at reviving the mood of romantic and free spirited optimism of the swinging past, the 2013 Continental GT evokes a sense of nostalgia. The Royal Enfield Continental GT is the lightest, fastest, most powerful Royal Enfield in production. It is also the best expression yet of a cultural phenomenon that has simply refused to fade away - the cafĂŠ racer. It has been priced at NRs. 7,05,000/-.

GIANT REIGN X1

T

The Giant moniker is amongst the most popular when it comes to mountain biking. Adored by a majority of Nepalese cyclists, Giant has a loyal fan following and has proven its might time and again. So Himalayan Single Track has just ushered in a new range of 2014 Giant mountain bikes. In the 2014 line-up, Giant has up-sized all of its most important 26 inch allmountain and dual-suspension trail bikes to 27.5 inch wheels as well as down-sized its 29er XC-racing hardtails and short-travel dual-suspension bikes to 27.5. According to the researches done by Giant, when it comes to weight, 27.5 performs more like 26 - it’s light and agile. And for efficiency and control, it outperforms 29. Rather than introducing a single 27.5 model, as some of their competitors have, Giant is rolling out entirely new designs and engineering solutions to maximize the performance advantages of 27.5-inch wheels.

Every tube is carefully shaped in some way to give the chassis enormous stiffness and strength, despite relatively slim tapering dimensions. Cold forged sections are used extensively around the swingarm and shock mounts, including the shock cradle underneath the large hollow well in the down tube. With an ALUXX SL frameset, the Reign X1 has the lightest alloy full suspension in Giant’s history. Radically hydroformed and using the latest, lightweight copivot design, the Reign X frameset pushes aluminium full suspension bike technology to new limits of weight, strength and performance. The Reign X1 comes equipped with 6.7 inches of Maestro suspension, and a 160mm fork.

The rear shock and front fork are both provided by RockShox, a well-known company in the suspension market. The OverDrive 2 headset allows the fork to be stiffer by tapering it from 1.5 inch to 1.25 inches instead of the standard 1.5 inch to 1 1/8 inch. The drivetrain designed by SRAM, includes the SRAM X9 Type 2 rear derailleur, X7 shifters, and Avid Elixir 7 Trail disc brakes, which are equipped with a front 200mm rotor and a rear 180mm rotor. This beast is thus well equipped to chew through any terrain you put it in and spit it out without much hassle. The Giant Reign X1 looks to be one very capable do-everything type of machine.

CONTACT: HIMALAYAN SINGLE TRACK THAMEL Ph. No: 01-4700909 E-mail: info@himalayansingletrack.com

Amongst the exciting new entrants is the enthralling Giant Reign X1 All Mountain Full Suspension. Giant has one of the most advanced frame manufacturing facilities in the world and there’s plenty of proof of that in the Reign X1 frame.

Late President MV Agusta Motor S.p.A.

MV Agusta, originally Meccanica Verghera Agusta, was founded in Cascina Costa, Italy back in 1945. Very few motorcycle manufacturers in the world can boast of such a rich motorcycle racing heritage with legends from the likes of Giacomo Agostini, Mike Hailwood, Phil Read, Carlo Ubbiali, and Gary Hocking to John Surtees having ridden their iconic red and silver invincible record machines to over 270 Grand Prix victories. Today, the exotic brand is popularly known as the creator of some of the most desirable and stylish motorcycles in the world, with unsurpassed attention to detail in their design and production processes. And, guess what? MV Agusta is now officially coming to Nepal. GearVenture Bike Nepal Pvt. Ltd has acquired the authorized distributor for MV Agusta motorcycles in Nepal and will be launching the brand in Nepal by the first half of March 2014, with the introduction of the F3 675, F3 800, Brutale 675, Brutale 800, Brutale 1090 and Rivale 800. Here is look at our pick of the most appropriate three for Nepal - Rivale 800, Brutale 675 and F3 675 - which we expect to be the best-sellers for the premium brand.

A departure from their usual sports bike and super naked range, the Rivale 800 is MV Agusta’s first ever supermoto-style machine. It’s one of the most practical bikes you can buy in MV Augusta’s range, that is extremely fast, fun and loud with typical glossy MV build-quality and attitude. Based heavily on the firm’s Brutale 800 engine, the ultra-short stroke inline three-cylinder motor delivers 125 bhp of power and 85 nm of torque. Rideby-wire throttle and three engine maps are the control interface between rider and the engine, which has an MV signature counter-rotating crankshaft. The frame is a combination of steel trellis and aluminium, with the fully-adjustable suspension provided by Marzocchi in front and Sachs in back. Front braking is via four-piston Brembo radial callipers. It’s a perfect combination of fine engineering excellence portrayed in a mix of sculptural beauty, mechanical purity, functionality, and total performance. 26

This year the race will be organized following the standard technical racing guidelines set by FIM, and will further push the racers and officials to the next level of closed circuit racing. To improvise on the competition and to further boost the scope of the championship, NASA has set up three primary racing categories for this year’s Racemandu. There will be a National, Novice and Ladies class. Under the National class, only the top tier winners of Racemandu I and the riders, who participated in the racing experience at the MMSC Racing Circuit in Chennai under NASA’s supervision, will be allowed to participate. The Novice class will accommodate rest of the participants. Both the National and Novice class has been further sub-divided into two categories for 100-198cc and 199-250cc motorcycles. The Ladies class will be strictly limited to female riders with scooters up to 200cc only. The races will be held at the same venue as last year and this time the layout of the circuit has been designed to be more complex and extended to cover a wider area. The first day of the event on the 7th of March will be dedicated for the qualifying sessions to decide on the pole positions and disqualifications for riders, as per their lap timings. And March 8th will be the race day. Volunteers and medical team will be scattered around the race track to monitor and prevent any untoward incident from happening.

The registration fees has been fixed at NRs.2500/- for the National and Novice Class, and participation in the Ladies Class will cost NRs. 1500/-. Both the fees include a complimentary lunch and refreshments for riders on the race day. NIGHT UPHILL RACE To be held on the opening day of the festival on 21st March, this is a unique addition to the HOF and the only of its kind competition in Nepal as well. The race will require riders to race on the uphill route from the main road towards the event site. Well, what’s so exciting about this then? This race will actually take place in the evening under almost pitch dark conditions, with riders navigating their way only with the help of their headlamps! Now this sounds real adventurous, doesn’t it?

DOWN HILL RACE Downhill racing is one of the most thrilling adrenaline filled aspects of cycling and with the abundance of hills surrounding Nepal, there is really no dearth for downhill racers in the country. This will be the most pumped-up event to look forward to in the HOF 2014 on the second day, with riders pushing their limits and speeding down the technical course at breakneck speeds.

CROSS COUNTRY Cross-Country cycling is the most common discipline of mountain biking. While less publicized than downhill cycling, this is the one that garners the highest levels of participation both recreationally and competitively. Unlike other disciplines of cycling, cross country racing emphasizes endurance above technical prowess and consistency is the key to finishing first. This mass start competition will have the racers traversing tough cross country courses and trails with of a mix of rough forest paths and singletracks.

It was truly a show fit to international standards and that’s definitely no mean feat. It was no easy feat finding a foothold to stand, jostling with the crowds and snaking towards the barricades, all eager to see the next big thing. For once, the pretty models were looking less appealing. The Auto Expo also saw some glamorous high profile visits from the likes of Sachin Tendulkar for BMW, Akshay Kumar for HMSI, Ranbir Kapoor for Hero MotoCorp, Priyanka Chopra for Jaguar Land Rover, Kareena Kapoor for DC Design, Ileana D’Cruz for Audi, Yami Gautam for Chevrolet and John Abraham for Yamaha. CROSSFIRE XZ250RR 48

AUTOLIFE Feb/Mar 2014

The Honda NX Dominator used to be one of the most capable off-road motorcycles back in its days. Its greatness can be further confirmed with the fact that I am riding a nearly two decade old model up the gnarly trails of the Shivapuri National Park and the aging motorcycle is still taking on the tough route like no man’s business. But there is a slight problem here. Because kicking up the dirt ahead and ruthlessly zipping past through the woods is the latest 2014 CrossFire XZ250RR off-road motorcycle, and I am trying bloody hard to keep up. At the control is Pasang Sherpa, the core man behind BikersNepal and one of the most experienced off-road riders in the country. This seems odd right! Am I not supposed to be on the saddle, pushing the motorcycles capabilities and delivering a first hand review? Well, sometimes the man above likes to show off his unconvincing sense of humour and play cruel jokes by putting you in a helpless situation. The CrossFire XZ250RR off-roader turned out to be too tall for my average 5.5 feet Gorkhali built and it was more than a struggle to have both of my feet comfortably planted on the ground. And, especially on a terrain where you are trying hard not to fall, it would have been absolutely foolish to even try. Hence, it was time to observe and learn; just like how most of us have never raced a MotoGP racing motorcycle or ever tried power sliding on a Dakar spec off-roader, but have seen enough to assume that these are the best out

there in the world. And boy, did the off-roader put out a great show! The CrossFire XZ250RR off-roader easily took on the impossible as it climbed just about anywhere like a mountain goat, navigated past streams, pulled off power wheelies on every bump on the track and skilfully slid past every corner with great stability. So, it would be safe to assume that the XZ250RR off-roader is a capable and fun motorcycle to go out exploring the unknown. Relax, the review doesn’t end here. BikersNepal Pvt. Ltd, the authorized distributor of CrossFire motorcycles in Nepal, are offering the XZ2500RR in two specifications – OffRoad and Motard. Both bikes are powered by the same single cylinder, water cooled,

four stroke engine which claims to deliver 30bhp of power. The only difference on the mechanical side being the 5-speed gearbox on the Off-Road model whereas it’s a 6-speed transmission on the Motard. On the visual front, both models are identical except for the change in tire specifications, with the Off-Road model fitted with tough knobbly tires and the Motard equipped with slick on-road tyres. The CrossFire XZ250RR is a stunning and sharp looking motorcycle clad with a minimum of plastic body parts, in true modern dirt bike fashion. Everything from

the masked headlights, aggressive tank side panels, to the sharp tail unit with the slick chromed exhaust has been tastefully done. The Motard especially, is one of the coolest looking bikes in its segment that you can find in the market today. The digital speedometer console is a much simpler affair though and displays the speed in kmph or mph, one tripmeter, odometer, gear indicator, radiator fan on/off lights and engine malfunction warning lights along with the headlight and side-light indicators. Fortunately for me, the CrossFire XZ250RR Motard stood much lower than the Off-Road model and I could comfortably have a go on it. Starting up the CrossFire was a bit of a tricky process because it was a departure from the usual procedure we have all become accustomed to. You need to rather pull in the front brake lever and press the odd starter button on the left handlebar unit to bring the bike to life. Once you work your way out to firing up the CrossFire XZ250RR, it immediately brings about a huge grin to your face. The motorcycle starts with a bang and the throaty volume from the exhaust makes you wonder if there is a much higher capacity engine under your legs.

This is definitely one of the best exhaust notes that we have heard from a stock motorcycle in this range. Put it into gear and you are immediately off to a flying start. The joker style throttle makes the bike easily leap forward even at the slight twist of the accelerator. The clutch action is light and the gear shifts are smooth. Navigating through city traffic is an easy affair owing to its lightweight build and the rider is positioned well to have a towering view of the traffic ahead. Once on the open highway, the bike begs to be ridden hard. The CrossFire is best enjoyed revving to the max in every gear and the motorcycle effortlessly zooms past traffic, screaming and howling aggressively. Its 0-100kmph sprint timings are quite impressive and we even managed to get it up to the 130kmph mark, though there is a fair amount of vibrations and chain noises at the top end. The frame is made of lightweight aluminium and the suspension has been set up just right to soak in the bumpy roads or confidently lean through the corners. Another compliment to the frame is the lightweight aluminium-magnesium alloy rims

which are popular worldwide for their tough built. On our early morning run to Dhulikhel, it handled really well past the numerous corners on the way and felt amazingly confidence inspiring. Braking was spot on as well and high speeds are shaved off pretty well. Of course, how could I let go the off-road fun. So we put the XZ250RR Motard to some abuse and let it run wild through some unknown dirt tracks we could spot from the highway. The suspension did feel a bit hard for soaking in the bumps properly, but the same hardness also allowed the CrossFire to stably power slide through the muddy corners and ride harder without bottoming out. Anyways, the suspension is fully adjustable and can be set up for each rider.

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

The CrossFire XZ250RR is definitely one of the most fun motorcycles to ride in the 250cc and below segment. Very few production motorcycles today offer the raw adrenaline packed performance that truly evokes your wild side, and the CrossFire just simply delivers that by a tank full. Sure it might seem overpriced, but compare it with similar bikes in its segment, and it begins to make more sense. Yes, the CrossFire is relatively a new Australian motorcycle manufacturer with its production base in China and long term reliability can be a major concern for most buyers. So if the XZ250RR can go on prove its forte over time, then we are already look at a formidable replacement to repeat the legacy of the aging Japanese offroaders of the past.

AUTOLIFE LEGENDS

THE CALCULATIVE RACER

NIKI LAUDA

FEW SPORTSMEN IN THE WORLD HAVE MANAGED TO SET A MARK AS POWERFUL AS NIKI LAUDA, WHOSE RETURN FROM A FATAL RACE ACCIDENT INJURY TO WIN TWO F1 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES IS ONE OF THE MOST COURAGEOUS AND INSPIRATIONAL COMEBACKS IN ANY SPORT, EVER. WORDS: SAURAV NEPAL

BORN Born as Andreas Nikolaus Lauda, Niki Lauda was born into a wealthy Austrian business family on February 22, 1949 in Vienna, Austria. He had an innate interest in automobiles since his childhood and was always very focused about his future in professional racing. But even having a well-to-do family didn’t help much, because his family wasn’t willing to support his racing dreams. Initially, he started out with racing Minis and this was later followed by racing in Formula Vee and Formula Three. However, the clever and calculative personality he was, he capitalized on his family’s prestigious social status and acquired bank loans to buy his way into professional racing. So in 1971, he bought his way into the March team as a Formula 2 driver with a £30,000 bank loan secured by his life insurance policy, and subsequently got promoted to a Formula 1 driver. He then took out another bank loan to buy his way into the BRM Formula 1 team in 1973. Nicknamed as ‘The Computer’, he had an impressive eye for mechanical details and improvements, complemented by a no-nonsense work ethic. Niki would give it his all for victory and his dream to become a top race car driver finally became a reality in 1974. His favourable recommendation by former BRM teammate Clay Regazzoni caught the attention of Enzo Ferrari and he was immediately signed to race for Ferrari. Scuderia Ferrari hadn’t had a champion since 1964, and Enzo had banked on Niki to get back to their winning 56

ways. After some stellar performances in the Ferrari alongside his teammate Clay Regazzoni, Niki displaced Regazzoni as the team leader in the next racing season and comfortably went on to win his first F1 World Championship for Ferrari in 1975. The next 1976 season started in the best possible way for the new World Champion. Niki lead the championship from the beginning and was well on his way for another consecutive championship title. But on 1st August 1976, a life-threatening crash at the dangerous Nürburgring during the German Grand Prix changed his life forever. On the second lap, Niki lost control of his car, hit an embankment and rolled back into the path of another car. The impact was tremendous and Niki’s car burst into flames. His colleagues managed to pull him out from the burning inferno, but he lapsed into a coma with several injuries and burns. Luckily, his conditions improved and in an impressive show of courage and extraordinary human-will, he returned to the Ferrari cockpit to race again six weeks later. However, during Lauda’s absence from two races, arch-rival James Hunt had closed in the point’s gap and Hunt was just short of 3 points for a championship victory by the end of the season Japanese GP. Both were determined to push their limits for the championship title, but Lauda returned to the pit lane during the race, due to the dangerously wet rainy conditions and a healing injury complication. Hunt continued to race and went on to win the championship, becoming the new world champion. Then in 1977, Lauda again cruised to his second championship title, with 3 race wins backed up by five second places, and

NIKI HAD AN IMPRESSIVE EYE FOR MECHANICAL DETAILS AND IMPROVEMENTS, COMPLEMENTED BY A NO-NONSENSE WORK ETHIC. HE WOULD GIVE IT HIS ALL FOR VICTORY.

shockingly withdrew from Ferrari because he felt that the team was not backing him as lead driver after he returned from injury. He moved to Brabham, but the car was uncompetitive and his two Brabham seasons were unsuccessful. So in his 1979 season with Brabham, Niki walked away from Formula 1 racing during the practice session of the Canadian GP. He then promptly retired from F1 to devote himself to his airline business and to TV commentary. But in 1982, he made a comeback, joining the McLaren team for a reported US $5 Million and won his third and last World Championship title in 1984. Finally in 1985, he retired from the sport for good as a driver, though he never really left the paddock. He continued to work as an advisor for Ferrari, served as a Jaguar Team Principal and became a television commentator. As of now, Lauda has taken on the role of a non-executive chairman of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team and also serves as the board member of Mercedes AMG Powertrains and special advisor to the Board of Daimler AG. Niki Lauda was lucky to survive the massive dangers of Formula 1’s early days and brilliant enough to conquer with three Formula 1 World Championship titles to his name, the first two with Ferrari and the last with McLaren. Hence, the battle-scarred champion who defied both the odds and convention, now remains a living legend.

RUSH MOVIE

Set against the sexy, glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing in the 1970s, Rush revolves around the true story of a great sporting rivalry between the handsome English playboy James Hunt, and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Austrian driver Niki Lauda. The duo shared a career long world famous rivalry/friendship. James Hunt and Niki Lauda first developed a fierce rivalry in 1970 at a Formula Three race at the Crystal Palace circuit in England, when both their cars spun out and Hunt eventually won the race. The story follows their distinctly different personal styles on and off the track, their loves and the astonishing 1976 season in which both drivers were willing to risk everything to become world champion in a sport with no margin for error. Rush is a finely crafted biographical sports drama directed by Ron Howard with exhilarating race sequences and strong performances from Chris Hemsworth (Hunt) and Daniel Bruhl (Lauda). A must watch!

AVIATION ENTREPRENEUR

After his first retirement in 1979, Niki Lauda focused on running an international charter airline that he had established in April of that year called Lauda Air. In order to secure money for the business, he came out of retirement in 1982 and raced for McLaren. But he sold his Lauda Air shares to majority partner Austrian Airlines in 1999, and in 2003 he started another new airline, Niki, which eventually became a subsidiary of Air Berlin. Lauda has his commercial pilot’s license and has even been known to act as Captain on his airline’s flights from time to time.

INSPIRATIONAL COMEBACK

On August 1, 1976, while racing at the German Grand Prix on the lethal Nürburgring track in Germany, Niki Lauda’s Ferrari had crashed into a wall on a bend and burst into flames. He was trapped for nearly a minute in the 800+ degree inferno before his fellow racers pulled him out. This incident nearly killed him and left him fatally injured with damaged lungs, charred right ear, several broken bones and burns on his head, wrists and eyelids. He lapsed into a coma, was given up for dead and even administered the last rites by a priest at the hospital. But he surprisingly returned to race six weeks later, with his face still bleeding from the burns, vision not yet fully restored and head still bandaged. His astonishingly quick return to the cockpit is still popularly recalled as one of the most courageous comebacks in sporting history. Lauda, having already won the World Championship in 1975, would go on to be the Formula One World Champion the following season in 1977 and then again in 1984. 58

AUTOLIFE ROADTRIP

INFO AND PHOTOS: FRIENDS OF ROYAL ENFIELD (FORE)

The unshakable riders at Friends Of Royal Enfield shares with AutoLife their recent epic backbreaking 5000km road trip experience on their trusted iron horses to attend the annual Rider Mania 2014 event in Chennai, India.

W

What's your idea of a road trip? A quick run to Pokhara, an adventure ride to Mustang or maybe be an east-to-west tour of Nepal from Mechi to Mahakali. But with hard-core touring experiences from every nook and corner of Nepal to the highlands of Tibet, Bhutan and India, these seasoned riders at Friends Of Royal Enfield (FORE) are a bit of different lot. FORE is a united motorcycling club of Royal Enfield bike owners who are dedicated to promoting motorcycle tourism between Nepal, Tibet and India. Over the years, the club has been organizing various long distance rides for Royal Enfield enthusiasts. So here is the story on their most recent and best adventure yet, when they rode all the way to Chennai from Kathmandu for the annual Rider Mania 2014 event. The Rider Mania (RM) is the biggest annual event of Royal Enfield motorcycles in India hosted by Brotherhood of Bulleteers Motorcycling Consortium (BOBMC) member clubs in India to commemorate the spirit of motorcycling. Ever since its inception in 2003, this annual gathering of Royal Enfield motorcycle owners has been held in various parts of India. It is events like Rider Mania that exemplify the brotherhood that every biker talks about. FORE had their first experience of the Rider Mania back in 2013, when they rode to Cherrapunji to attend the event. No sooner had they returned from Cherrapunji, the enthusiastic riders at FORE had made up their mind to give continuity to this adventure and attend the next Rider Mania event. The 2014 event was hosted by the Madras Bulls in Chennai on 18 and 19 January, 2014.

After some concrete planning and a fund raising event on 20th December, 2013 at Jazz Upstairs to support the ride, a total of 12 riders (including a mechanic) on 8 Royal Enfield motorcycles set out to travel from the Himalayas to the Indian peninsula on a whopping 23 day ride. Breaking the morning silence at the crack of dawn on the 5th of January 2014, the pack gathered at the Himalayan Enfielders workshop and thundered out of the valley on their trusted Royal Enfield motorcycles. Of course, a quick stop at the NASA Bullet Club headquarters in Tinkune was in order, where a brief farewell meeting had been organized by the hosts to lend some financial support to the riders. After being escorted till Naubise by a group of likeminded Royal Enfield enthusiasts, the 8 Royal Enfields rumbled in tandem towards the Indo-Nepal border at Sunauli. By noon, they had completed the roughly 300km ride to Sunauli for Day 1.

“IT IS EVENTS LIKE RIDER MANIA THAT EXEMPLIFY THE BROTHERHOOD THAT EVERY BIKER TALKS ABOUT.”

The next day marked the beginning of their Indian adventures and the whole gang was visibly pumped up as they entered international territory and began ripping through the great Indian plains. And adventure it was in its truest form, because throughout the week-long ride from Kanpur, Guna, Dhule till Pune, the pack literally lived life on the road by crashing for the night by random roadside Dhabas. Pune was a break from the adventure and after rejuvenating themselves in modern amenities, the riders continued towards Goa. All along the route, slight mechanical glitches were a common affair on their Royal Enfield’s, but easily solvable with the group’s extensive knowledge of their motorcycles and with the help of their skilled back-up mechanic Khurshid Mohammed. But en route Goa on January 12, one of the motorcycles had taken its toll and broke down completely with an engine failure. It was impossible to get the motorcycle back to life with the limited spares at their disposal, and rather than letting that dampen their spirits, the jolly group decided to call it a night by lighting a bonfire and camping in a safe area right by the roadside, with their bikes strategically placed to reflect their presence to the oncoming highway traffic. The next morning, they towed the sick Enfield all the way to Goa. And as they say, the breakdown rather turned out to be a blessing in disguise. With the dead Enfield being worked on at a local workshop, the group could now afford to relax, enjoy and laze around by the beaches in one of the most fun and happening tourist place in India. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

“ADVENTURE IT WAS IN ITS TRUEST FORM, BECAUSE THROUGHOUT THE WEEK-LONG RIDE FROM KANPUR, GUNA, DHULE TILL PUNE, THE PACK LITERALLY LIVED LIFE ON THE ROAD BY CRASHING FOR THE NIGHT BY RANDOM ROADSIDE DHABAS.” Fuelled by the cheap booze and unlimited fun in Goa, the riders were fully refreshed after the two day break. On January 15, they got back on the highway leading to Karnataka and cruised towards Mysore for the night. The next stop was Bangalore, where the evening progressed sharing riding experiences with the members of Wolfe Pack MC at the host Ravi Patel’s home. With the plan to reach the Rider Mania event ground at Mahabalipuram in Chennai a day in advance, the group set out of Bangalore early in the morning. But another breakdown meant stopping for the night at Pondicherry. So the group missed out on the opening day activities of Rider Mania on January 18, and managed to reach the event ground only by the evening. However, there was still a lot in store as the riders set up ‘Camp Nepal’, surrounded by Buddhist prayer flags and the Nepali flag proudly fluttering amidst the sea of more than 1200 avid Royal Enfield riders from India. Music being an integral part of the festival, the evening was spent grooving to the live music performance by professional bands. The next day was spent enjoying the various activities like dirt track racing, slow race, figure of eight competitions, beer guzzling competitions, arm wrestling, custom bikes competition, etc and mingling with the riders from all corners of India. FORE was the sole club attending the event from outside of India and were awarded with the title of ‘Hardest Riders’. One of the riders Dzongden Kang Sherpa too won another award as part of Rider Mania’s ‘Motography Contest’, where riders with the most likes on BOBMC Rider Mania’s Facebook page were rewarded with special prizes. It was an amazing experience for the riders from FORE to have been able to ride all the way from Nepal on their beloved Royal Enfields and swap stories with the like-minded riders.

Highly satisfied with the Rider Mania experience, the riders began the journey back and reached Bangalore on 21st of January. If they could have had their way, the riders would have happily made the ride all the way back home. But with professional and personal commitments on hold back home, it was decided to take the train back from Bangalore till the Indo-Nepal border at Gorakhpur, for a faster return trip. So on 23rd January, the bikes were loaded in the train cargo and the group made another epic 60hour train ride to Gorakhpur. After Gorakhpur, the ride continued with the joy of being back on home turf. The last night halt of the trip was then made at Narayanghat, where another memorable evening was spent with the member of Bullet Bike Zone Club. Finally, the riders were back in Kathmandu on January 27 and on arrival headed straight to where it all began – Jazz Upstairs. It was the end to a fantastic ride and one hell of a journey from the high mountains of Nepal to the beaches by the Indian Ocean. And what better way to end the epic experience than with a well-deserved toast to the ride! But as the drinks flowed till the wee hours of the evening, another promise was made – to ride to Chandigarh for Rider Mania 2015, when it will be hosted by Road Survivors of Chandigarh. And apparently, these guys take their promises very seriously.

“IT WAS THE END TO A FANTASTIC RIDE AND ONE HELL OF A JOURNEY FROM THE HIGH MOUNTAINS OF NEPAL TO THE BEACHES BY THE INDIAN OCEAN.”

Riding a motorcycle is one of the most liberating experiences. Few things in life come close to the thrill of tearing down the highway on your motorcycle as you fight the resisting wind and soak in the beauty of the scenic vistas around you. But in this joy of riding, we sadly tend to overlook the higher rate of risks involved when riding a motorcycle. Unlike in a four-wheeler, there is little to protect your exposed body when a motorcycle is involved in a collision or crash, with the consequences often resulting in life-threatening injuries. It's already a tough job maintaining a steady balance on two wheels, and surprisingly most of us are still least bothered about riding a motorcycle the right way. So here's how you should not ride a motorcycle...

THE UNNECESSARY RUSH

Bikers should always remember that they are the smallest and most vulnerable road user. So avoid the unnecessary courage of being the first to speed past intersections and traffic lights, in spite of oncoming vehicles. It does feel heroic, but should you ram into a four wheeler, it’s the motorcyclist who is going to have the last laugh. And remember that there’s more of your kind in the world than you could have imagined. So, every time you are looking to jump that traffic light, there is another similar dimwit in the other direction raring to do the same. So always be cautious when passing through intersections/traffic lights and avoid overtaking near junctions and bends. 64

WRONGLY ADJUSTED REAR VIEW MIRRORS

The rear view mirrors (RVM) in your motorcycles have been put there for a reason. A well-adjusted RVM offers a clear view of what’s behind the motorcycle. But surprisingly, most of us either have the RVM missing or adjusted the wrong way. So before setting out on a ride, always have the RVM’s adjusted well to offer a clear view behind and make the best use of it before making any manoeuvres, when suddenly braking or while overtaking. It saves the sudden surprises looming in from behind.

TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT

Do we seriously need to have our pillion rider sitting so close to the rider? To some extent, it’s understandable for a couple deeply and madly in love. But what’s with two straight folks holding up so intimately? This just doesn’t look odd and disturbing, but affects the balance of your motorcycle, especially in panic situations. Also, avoid speeding recklessly with a pillion onboard. It’s actually a lie when they tell you that they are enjoying the mad ride. Seriously, which person in the right state of mind would be glad to be a part of a death race?

OVERTAKING AND CUTTING IN EARLY

Yes, motorcycles are built to be ridden fast and zipping past every other vehicle is one of those things that can give the rider an immense satisfaction. But when doing so, one of the major errors that most riders make is by overtaking in spite of an approaching vehicle in the opposite direction and cutting into the lane of the overtaken vehicle too early. Well, most of the time you managed to squeeze yourself through the tight gaps is actually because the approaching vehicle or the vehicle you just cut short decided to slow down for your goodwill. So when overtaking, always watch out for oncoming vehicles and create a good space between you and the vehicle you overtake before cutting in. Don’t keep pushing your luck too far. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

Riding fast and cautiously on empty stretches of road is understandable, but why ride like a mad bull on rampage through a choked up city traffic. Relax, what’s the rush! Your motorcycle is not enjoying the unnecessary stress anyways. And why can’t some of us ever ride straight? Why all that weaving around from lane to lane and dancing with your motorcycle. You want to dance so badly? We have the right place for you. They call it the discotheque and there’s plenty of it around town. Give the roads a break. And for all those wanna-be racers, here’s a bit of a shocking revelation. You actually go faster when you ride straight!

NO GRIP ON HANDLEBARS

Most riders can be seen casually holding on to the handlebars when riding, and some even go to the extent of riding with one only hand on the grip. But doing so increases the chances of your motorcycle heading in the wrong direction, should there be any sudden disturbance in the balance of your motorcycle. So always hold on to the handlebars firmly to keep your grip over rough surfaces and sudden changes in directions due to obstructions on the road. This permits you to use the proper muscles for precision steering.

SLANTED FEET

We have odd trends of trying to look cool when riding a motorcycle. And having both your feet angled on the foot pegs with the toes pointed downward seem to be one of them. Get over it riders! This not only delays your gear shift timings, but might just be the last you will see of your toes when it slams hard into something concrete on an uneven road surface. When the motorcycle is moving, keep your feet firmly balanced on the footrests and near to the control so you can get to them fast when needed.

HALFWAY HELMETS

Helmets are the most important safety gears when riding motorcycles. But it’s a popular culture, especially among the teens, to have their full face helmets put on only halfway till their foreheads. Seriously, how can juggling or balancing a helmet on your forehead like a lunatic be a cool style statement? So wear it the right way and make sure it’s strapped on well. It’s no pretty sight to have the helmet flying off during an accident and cracking your head open in the tarmac. Also, wearing helmets in such a fashion to have mobile conversation isn’t an excuse.

PUSHING YOUR LIMITS

We motorcyclist are one of the most egoistic lot on the road. Same reason why most of us just can’t stand the idea of someone zooming past us. It’s alright if you can keep up or overtake comfortably, but pushing yourself beyond your skill level can be disastrous. So always ride at your own pace within your personal controllable boundaries. Don‘t push yourself to keep up with more experienced riders, and do not give in to road rage and try to “get even” with another rider or motorist. The road is not the place to race and never let your biker ego get the better of your ability.

NOT MAINTAINING A SAFE DISTANCE

Some of us like to ride real close to other vehicles or are least bothered about a mightier vehicle following close behind. Now imagine what happens when the vehicle in front suddenly comes to a grinding halt or you need to immediately stop? It’s either ramming into the vehicle in the front or taking a huge leap into the air with a bump from behind. So either speed up ahead or let the vehicle behind pass. There’s good reason why our truck drivers have it written on their lorries - ‘Keep Safe Distance’. Position yourself well on the road and also avoid staying under the blind spots of larger cars, buses and trucks. Ride where the driver can see you in the mirrors.

DRINKING AND RIDING

You have probably already heard this from your loved ones nearly a million times. Let us say it again. Never ride a motorcycle under the heavy intoxication and influence of alcohol and drugs. Yes, you might feel like the most skilled rider on earth after a couple of drinks. But that’s just a part of the delusion that alcohol causes and rather massively cuts down on your reaction time. It may be hard when all your friends are drinking, but figure out what’s more important - being popular or being alive? facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE MOTORSPORTS

FORMULA 1 This is the ultimate test of man and machine - pushing car and driver to their absolute limits in pursuit of one simple goal. To be crowned the World Champion. INFO & PHOTOS: www.Formula1.com | Red Bull Content Pool Formula One, popularly known as F1 and officially referred to as the FIA Formula One World Championship, is the highest class of single-seater auto racing sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The 'Formula' designated in the name, refers to a set of rules with which all participants' cars must comply, while the ‘1’ denotes the championship’s status as the highest level of international motorsport recognized by the FIA. Its roots lie in pre-war Grand Prix racing which began as early as 1906, but it wasn’t until 1950 when the major races were brought together for the inaugural Formula One World Championship. Evolution then became revolution in the 1970’s when former team owner Bernie Ecclestone led the championship’s commercial explosion. Bernie rearranged the management of Formula One's commercial rights and instantly transformed the sport into a glamorous and exciting multi-billion dollar business. A F1 season now consists of a series of races, known as Grand Prix, held throughout the world on purpose-built circuits and public roads. While Europe is the sport's traditional base, and hosts about half of each year's races, the sport's scope has expanded significantly during recent years and an increasing number of Grand Prix are held on other continents. A Formula One Grand Prix event spans a weekend. It begins with two free practice sessions on Friday (except in Monaco, where Friday practices are

70

AUTOLIFE Feb/Mar 2014

moved to Thursday), and one free practice on Saturday. A qualifying session is then held after the last free practice session. This session determines the starting order for the race on Sunday. Every team in Formula One must run two cars in every session on a Grand Prix weekend, and every team may use up to four drivers in a season. The results of each race are evaluated using a points system to determine two annual World Championships, one for the Drivers and one for the Constructors. Only the top ten cars are awarded points, with the winner receiving 25 points. The racing drivers, constructor teams, track officials, organisers, and circuits are all required to be holders of valid Super Licences, the highest class of racing license issued by the FIA. With sponsors pouring in the big bucks to allow the world’s biggest performance car manufacturers to produce some of the most technologically-advanced machines ever to race, F1 cars boast of impressive performance figures. They are the fastest multi-turn circuit-racing cars in the world capable of running approximately 305kms every race day. Firstly, they weigh just 690kgs, including the driver. The body is made out of ultra-strong, lightweight carbon fiber that has spent hundreds of hours being refined in a wind tunnel to ensure it produces huge amounts of downforce with as little drag as possible.

Secondly, the V6s engines put out around 600bhp and the two ERS systems (ERS-K and ERS-H) will give drivers an additional 160bhp or so for approximately 33 seconds per lap. So from a standing start, an F1 car will accelerate from 0-100 kmph in about 1.5 seconds and after five seconds will be travelling at 200 kmph in fourth gear. Top speed in seventh can be as high as 350 kmph. Braking is equally impressive. The carbon brakes can scrub off 230 kmph in less than two seconds!! The 2014 Formula One season will be the 65th season of the Formula One World Championship. Eleven teams and twentytwo drivers will compete in nineteen Grand Prix for the World Drivers' and World Constructors' Championships. Sebastian Vettel will start the season as the defending Drivers' Champion after securing his fourth consecutive title at the 2013 Indian Grand Prix. His team, Red Bull Racing, will start the season as the defending Constructors' Champions, having also won their fourth consecutive championship in India. Watch the excitement unfold from the 16th of March, 2014.

THE NEW REGULATIONS FOR 2014 Every year the technical regulations governing F1 are rewritten. The 2014 season brings with it some of the biggest changes to Formula One racing with plenty of technical regulation changes for the upcoming season. We guide you through the most important rule revisions.

NEW POWER UNITS

This is one of the most significant changes in F1's sporting history. This year the championship will see the introduction of a revised engine formula, in which the previous 2.4 litre V8 engine configuration will be replaced with a new formula specifying a 1.6 litre turbocharged V6 engine that incorporates an energy recovery system into its build with two Energy Recovery Systems (ERS). As well as generating energy under braking, ERS units also generate power using waste heat from the engine’s turbocharger. The 2014 V6s now put out around 600bhp with eight forward gears instead of the seven. However, the two ERS systems (ERS-K and ERS-H) will give drivers an additional 160bhp or so for approximately 33 seconds per lap.

NOSE

There’s a big change to the height of the nose tip, which drops from a maximum height of 550 mm to a maximum of 185 mm. The high nose has been useful for guiding airflow under the car, but it’s also viewed as a risk in launching accidents where one car impacts the rear of another and flies into the air.

POINTS

This one's a bit controversial. Double drivers’ and constructors’ points will be awarded at the final race of the 2014 Formula One season in order to maximise focus on the championship until the end of the campaign.

POLE POSITION TROPHY

A new trophy will be awarded to the driver who scores the most pole positions during the season. In the event of a tie, the trophy will be awarded to the driver who holds the greatest number of second places. If there is still a tie, the greatest number of third places will be taken into account and so on until a winner emerges.

F1 2014 RACE CALENDAR The 2014 calendar will feature substantial revisions from the 2013 season. The Russian Grand Prix will be held for the first time in a century at the Sochi International Street Circuit in Sochi, and the Austrian Grand Prix will be revived, with the race to be held at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. The Indian Grand Prix will be discontinued for one year ahead of a move to an early-season date in 2015, whilst the Korean Grand Prix has been removed from the schedule entirely.

MOTO GP

THE PINNACLE OF MOTORCYCLE RACING

INFO AND PHOTOS: www.motogp.com | Red Bull Content Pool

Riders relentlessly push each other around the challenging circuits, seemingly defying the laws of gravity while leaning into the corners, and charge along the straights at phenomenal speeds in excess of 340kmph. At times, they lose control of their bikes and take a tumble and slide across the asphalt or gravel traps. Some walk away without a scratch while some get seriously injured, and occasionally the risks are not always limited to injuries… But regardless, the racers still get back on the saddle and continue to push boundaries, just to achieve that crowning glory of being the ultimate champion of motorcycle racing. That's MotoGP for you, in its pure form. Nothing else ever comes close to generating such an exhilarating and thrilling experience. MotoGP is the premier World Championship of motorcycle racing where the world’s best riders line the grid aboard exclusive multimillion dollar cutting-edge factory machinery and push technical boundaries over 19 races held around the globe. Established as a World Championship by the FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) in 1949,

MotoGP is now into its 65th year with a rich history of motorcycle racing. It is the oldest motorsports championship in the world now administrated by commercial rights owners Dorna Sports under the supervision of the FIM. It is closely followed by millions of fans across the globe through various mediums, with more than 2.4 million people walking through the gates of the circuits to watch MotoGP in 2013. A 19-race calendar has been set for the season and the level of anticipation is already on an all-time high with the first race of the championship set for the Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar at the Losail International Circuit on 23rd March, 2014. With the talented Marc Márquez looking forward to defend his championship title in the MotoGP category, and grand prix heavyweights like Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa all set to push their limits along with promising rookies like 2013 Moto2 Champion Pol Espargaro, Scott Redding and Mike di Meglio, the level of competition this season is already looking exceptionally promising.

MOTO GP 2014 RACE CALENDAR The 2014 calendar sees the addition of two South American races which will be the series' first visit to the continent since 2004. A race in Argentina at the newly upgraded Autódromo Termas de Río Hondo and a race in Brazil at the Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet are the new race circuits for the season. The standalone MotoGP race at Laguna Seca, a mainstay since 2005, has though been discontinued. Here’s a look at the 19-race calendar for the upcoming 2014 season.

THE BASICS OF MOTO GP CATEGORIES On a Grand Prix weekend, there is a race in three categories. Along with the premier MotoGP class, there are also two ultracompetitive World Championship Grand Prix categories – Moto2 and Moto3. MotoGP is the ultimate test for the finest talents in motorcycle racing, in which the maximum engine capacity has been restricted to 4-stroke 1000cc engines, and the minimum age for riders is 18 years old. Formerly labelled ‘500cc’, the premier category of the championship underwent a major change in 2002 with new technical regulations permitting the introduction of four-stroke machinery and increasing the engine capacity to 990cc, thus becoming MotoGP. From 2007 the rules were altered, limiting engine capacity to 800cc, and once again from 2012, setting the maximum engine displacement at 1000cc. Moto2 bikes are powered by a 4-stroke 600cc engine producing around 140bhp, which is all supplied by Honda. The bodywork design and construction of the chassis is free for all teams, though within the constraints of the FIM Grand Prix Technical Regulations. The minimum age for riders in Moto2 is 16. Moto3 is powered by 4-stroke 250cc single-cylinder motorcycles with riders not exceeding a maximum age of 28 and within the minimum age of 16.

NOTHING ELSE EVER COMES CLOSE TO GENERATING SUCH AN EXHILARATING AND THRILLING EXPERIENCE.

RACE FORMAT A Grand Prix event takes place over three days, with the first two of those for practice and qualification for each class. The third day is race-day. After warm-up sessions for each category on race-day, the smallest category - which is Moto3 - takes to the track first, with the Moto2 class following and then finally the premier MotoGP event. However, this can be subject to change. Races vary in length between 95-130kms and normally last between 40-45 minutes, conforming to a set number of laps, which differs at each track. Pit-stops are rare but permitted, and are especially applicable only for MotoGP riders in changeable weather conditions when riders can enter the pit-lane and switch machines to one fitted with different spec tyres.

THE COMPETITION Riders and Constructors compete for respective FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix titles in each category. Teams, meanwhile, compete for a different MotoGP Team Championship as there are different teams competing on machinery from the same manufacturer, such as Yamaha Factory Racing and Tech3 Yamaha.

POINTS SYSTEM For riders, the points which count towards their World Championship total will be those gained in each race. For Constructors, only the highest placed motorcycle of a Constructor will gain points, according to the position in the race. For Teams, all points scored by the riders in the team, including substitutes or replacements, will count towards the Team Championship. However, wild card riders will not score points for the Team Championship. Championship Points achieved range from 25 to 1 depending on the position achieved. In the event of a tie in the number of points, the final positions will be decided on the basis of the number of best results (number of first places, number of second places etc.). In the event that there is still a tie then, the date in the Championship at which the highest place was achieved will be taken into account with precedence going to the latest result.

KEY RULES AND FLAGS Riders have to strictly respect all the FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix rules and codes. During the course of a Grand Prix, flags and warning lights are also used to advise and warn the riders, providing them with critical information about the race. So breaking rules on track and/or ignoring flag instructions can result in various punishments for the riders depending on the seriousness of the infringement. Punishments range from warnings, fines, ride through penalties, changes of race position, time penalties, disqualifications, withdrawals of Championship points to suspensions or exclusions.
