EDITORIAL CITY OFJOY
B
By now, all of you must have already noticed the massive changes in the roads within the capital. Isn’t is quite a relief to finally see the demolished streets back in shape with the extended and improved roads. And what a sight we must say! Of course, work is still going on at some sections. But nevertheless, we are loving the rapid pace at which work is being carried out. Finally there is going to be some breather from having to drive in congested roads. Or is it? What about our insane driving/riding habits? Isn’t it high time we got ourselves educated on how to make the right use of the roads? Otherwise, this will only mean that the widened roads will become a playground for deadlier vehicle accidents with more room for careless driving/riding. Public vehicles need to be disciplined, private vehicle drivers will have to be more cautious, riders need to stop being careless and pedestrians should avoid jay walking. And with the roads in the city going through an exciting transformation of its own, the new and improved Honda City couldn’t have really arrived at better time. So we took the new Honda City in both manual and CVT automatic variant for a quick spin around town to tell you what it is all about. Other reviews include of the retro Royal Enfield Continental GT café racer and the attractive Commencal Acid fixxie bicycle. As a nod to the original Continental GT, Royal Enfield has revived the feeling of freedom, fun and responsiveness that riders were trying to achieve back then and re-introduced it in the modern context with the new 535cc Continental GT café racer motorcycle. Stepping up the game in Commencal’s 2013 collection and moving away from their comfort zone of mountain bikes is Commencal’s first fixed-gear bike, the Acid, which pushes the bar when it comes to style over substance. The last month for one was quite eventful as well with a host of motoring and cycling events being held. Catch all the report from some of the most exciting events held in the country and read some about the season opening races of the international F1 and MotoGP Championship. With new regulations in the offing, the tables have turned and the season is looking unpredictable and more dramatic. It’s going to be exciting! So the Nepali New Year 2071 is around the corner and we bet that most of you are pretty much already looking forward to it. Well, we already have a plan and like always we are all geared up to kick in the New Year in style with the 6th Enfield Rendezvous & Poker Run. Pokhara here we come thundering and rumbling! Happy Nepali New Year 2071 folks… Have a great one.

GO FORD PROMOTES NEED FOR SPEED Go Automobiles Pvt. Ltd, the authorized distributors of Ford vehicles in Nepal, hosted a charity premiere screening of the Need For Speed movie at QFX Jai Nepal on 28th March, 2014 and had extended invitations to selected media. Though the new movie based on the popular EA Entertainment racing game casts Aaron Paul as a car-loving, hardworking street racer in the lead role, Ford’s Mustang has received a star treatment as well. Before he even cast a single actor, director Scott Waugh actually travelled to Detroit
to meet with Ford Motor Co. executives about using the iconic Mustang car in his movie. The Mustang was the perfect fit for his lead character. The Mustang in “Need For Speed” is based on the 2013 Shelby GT500 and billed in the film as the final car famed designer Carroll Shelby was working on at the time of his 2012 death. Among the custom alterations were a wider body, 20-inch alloy wheels, a V8 engine, heavier compression rates on the springs, high-charged Bilstein shocks and thicker sway bars. The interior console was adapted to accommodate an iPad for Paul’s character to use when communicating with his crew and the futuristic side-view mirrors were turned into cameras. Seven
different Mustangs were built, each serving specific purposes ranging from beauty shots, stunts and driving shots to a model that could be lifted by and hung from a helicopter. Need For Speed marks roughly the 3,000th appearance in a feature film for the Mustang, one that Ford is particularly proud of.

KOENIGSEGG UNLEASHES THE AGERA ONE:1 Koenigsegg has officially pulled the wraps off not only the most powerful Koenigsegg ever built, but possibly the fastest car ever built. The car produces 1340bhp and weigh in at just 1340kg, which simply translates to one horsepower for every kilogram! Hence the name Agera One:1. There’s a Le Mans-inspired active wing configuration that produces around 600kg of downforce - the same as the P1 larger air vents for cooling, active undertrim air management, a roof air scoop, titanium exhaust system, upgraded triplex suspension with carbon bevel springs with active shocks and ride height, and of course, an upgraded version of the twin-turbocharged 5.0-litre V8 from the Agera R. Top speed is around 440kph, it’ll go from 0-100kph in 2.8 seconds, 0-300kph in about 12 seconds and 0-400kph in 20 seconds. Koenigsegg has confirmed that just six of the extreme hypercars were built - seven if you include the company’s own R&D car - with two being sold to British customers, and four on their way to China.
PORSCHE REVEALS CAYMAN AND BOXSTER GTS Porsche has announced the fastest and most powerful ever Cayman to grace the streets of the world. It’s the new Cayman GTS. This is chiefly because the 3.4-litre flat-six ‘boxer’ engine has been tuned to deliver 340bhp and 380Nm of torque, while the Sport Chrono pack and active suspension have both been fitted as standard. You get a new front spoiler and black-finish bi-xenon headlights, a new lower rear apron, 20in Carrera S alloys and the option of a 20mm lower ride height. Both of those allow the driver to fine tune damper stiffness and throttle response, and in conjunction with Porsche’s PDK doubleclutch auto box, the new Cayman GTS is able to accelerate from 0-100kph in 4.6 seconds. Top speed sits at 285kph. Now the Boxster. The drop-top sports car also gets the same 3.4-litre flat-six, here tuned to deliver 330bhp and 370Nm of torque, that together with the PDK gearbox - sprints from 0-100kph in just 4.7 seconds (0.3s quicker than the Boxster S), and on to a top speed of 280kph; the first ever Boxster to top the 280kph barrier. There’s the same Sport Chrono pack and active suspension as in the Cayman, a launch control function, the dynamic engine mounts that reduce the weight transfer when your palms get sweaty, 20in Carrera S alloys and the option of a chassis that’s 20mm lower. Externally the Boxster GTS gets a new front spoiler, rear apron and black-finish bi-xenon headlights, and inside there are sports seats and much Alcantara. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

DUCATI DIAVEL GETS AN UPDATE The Diavel was launched in 2011 and quickly rose to the top of the power cruiser segment thanks to its revelatory handling, stopping power to rival the firm’s own 1198 superbike, and performance to match from the sportsbike-derived engine. Three years after the bike was launched to widespread acclaim for delivering sportsbike levels of performance to the cruiser class, Ducati has now updated the Diavel. Official images and technical data reveal that Ducati’s game-changing Diavel will benefit from a host of revisions for 2014. The main changes centre around a new twin-spark version of the 1198cc Testastretta V-twin engine. While Ducati claim that it will pack the same 162 bhp punch as the outgoing version, there will be more torque on tap and improvements throughout the rev range. In addition, the new engine is also claimed to deliver improved fuel efficiency, while servicing costs will reduce, with the new model only requiring a major service every 28,800 kms.
HARLEY-DAVIDSON SHOWS THREE NEW MODELS Fresh off the unveiling of the new Street 750 and the launch of Project RUSHMORE, Harley-Davidson has unleashed three new motorcycles that expand its diverse line-up of street bikes. This mid-year release of the retro-cool Low Rider, rangy SuperLow 1200T and classic Street Bob Special Edition completes the largest new-model launch in HarleyDavidson’s 110-year history.
LOW RIDER The Low Rider returns to the HarleyDavidson range after a gap of five years and combines a low seat height of just 680mm with an adjustable seat, handlebars and foot pegs to make sure the rider can get comfortable. The 1690cc V-twin has been through the same revamp as others as part of the ‘Project Rushmore’ overhaul which is more about revitalising the whole range of bikes than creating new models. SUPERLOW 1200T Harley-Davidson is pitching the SuperLow 1200T as a lighter option in the touring category. Thanks to the power of a 1200cc Evolution V-Twin engine, the SuperLow
1200T can run with the pack, while the rear shock absorbers offer easy pre-load adjustment to accommodate the weight of luggage and passenger on the two-up Reduced Reach touring seat. STREET BOB SPECIAL EDITION The new Street Bob Special Edition is a custom model with stripped-down styling and a 1690cc engine, 5-spoke cast wheels and a unique two-tone paint job with graphics. It has forward controls and drag handlebars aimed at giving this bobber a meaner look. The new model has a chopped rear mudguard, Fat Bob fuel tank, and blacked-out engine as part of this styling makeover.
THE NEW YAMAHA TRICITY Yamaha has unveiled a new three wheeler mobility solution for the traffic snarled roads of today in Thailand. The Yamaha Tricity has compact dimensions which match those of other 125cc scooters in its class and weighs in at just 152kgs. The Tricity has good agility thanks to its cleverly thought out design and the parallelogram link system that maintains the distance between the twin front wheels even while taking a turn. Yamaha says that riders can lean the Tricity like they would with a regular two-wheeled scooter. This tri-wheel scooter has a Unified Braking System (UBS), which applies braking power to the rear and front wheels simultaneously when the left lever is pulled. Power is derived from a fuel injected 125cc, liquid cooled, four stroke engine. The power is sent to the tarmac via the rear wheel through a CVT transmission. The scooter named Tricity will be launched in the summer of 2014 in European markets and will be priced at 4000 Euros. 20

Riders will have to pick a card only in each pit stop to make a complete Poker hand at the final destination and the best Poker hand wins an award at the end of the run. In addition to that, there are also other various specific awards and the check points offer free food, drinks or lucky spots prizes. Rabi Thapa (CEO of Sacred Summits Pvt.

Ltd) in association with an Australian friend Stewart Mclean, had initiated the event in 2009 in memory of their riding friend late Binod Chhetri, an adventurer and a die-hard fan of the Royal Enfield motorcycles. Over the years, it has gained much popularity and has become a ‘must attend’ event for Enfielders to come together once a year to swap bike riding stories, celebrate the Nepali New Year in style and share the road with fellow locals and international riders. While Christians waits for Christmas, Hindus for Diwali and Muslims for Id, Enfielders here in Nepal now eagerly anticipate their loudest and biggest reunion - The Enfield Rendezvous Poker Run. So be a part of the biggest thunder ride in the Himalayas. Don’t miss it or you will be talked about!!!

Racing is probably the last thing that fires up in your mind when you think of Royal Enfield motorcycles. But many are still unaware of the fact that Royal Enfield had actually built a Continental GT back in 1965, which was a tuned 250cc café racer bike developed to target the young riders of that era. Café Racing culture had first originated in Britain during the post-war era, when motorcycle enthusiasts in leathers, boots and open face helmets began using stripped-down customized fast motorcycles, and raced each other from one café to another. Now, the thing with some cultures is that they never fade away. Thus as a nod to the original Continental GT, Royal Enfield has revived the feeling of freedom, fun and responsiveness that riders were trying to achieve back then and re-introduced it in the modern context with the new 535cc Continental GT café racer motorcycle. So is this really the fastest, lightest and most powerful motorcycle Royal Enfield has ever made?
STYLING
The Royal Enfield Continental GT has got everything in terms of styling to be called a proper Café Racer. There’s a low profile extended fuel tank with knee recesses, retro aluminium spoke wheels, clip-on handle bars, stubby front mudguard, fullychromed headlamps, rearset footpegs and neatly sculpted racy single seat with red contrasting stitching and a curved seat cowl. The gloriously red paint scheme on the minimalistic design contrast well with the generously laid chrome bits. However, the GT isn’t flawless because the build
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

quality and the level of finish does leave some room for improvement. Interestingly, Royal Enfield offers a mini aluminium bar end mirrors, upswept performance exhaust pipe and a pillion seat as optional accessories to further enhance the styling and functionality. The GT features back-lit twin pod analogue instrumentation cluster with one dial acting as the speedometer in both miles and kilometres, while the other acts as a rev counter with other tell-tale lights such as engine check light, battery warning indicator and turn indicators with high beam. A digital display on the left pod shows fuel tank level, two trip meters and an odometer. It’s guaranteed that every time you head out on the Continental GT, there will be plenty of on-lookers craning their necks to get a better look at your motorcycle. It has the right balance of retro sophistication and modern elegance. 34

“IT’S NO ROCKET, BUT WHEN YOU LEAN OVER AND GUN THE THROTTLE, A GRIN COMES AUTOMATICALLY TO YOUR FACE. IT CERTAINLY IS HAPPIER TO GATHER MOMENTUM THAN ANY OTHER ROYAL ENFIELD I’VE RIDDEN.” facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
PERFORMANCE
Thumb the starter or hit down the kick-starter and you might be surprised to hear none of the good old thumping that Royal Enfield’s have always been associated with. There is still a throaty, less angry rumble though. The new Royal Enfield features an upgraded 535cc single cylinder air-cooled Unit Construction Engine with a re-mapped ECU and lower inertia, all of which promises extra punch and responsiveness with a power of 29 bhp and 44 nm of torque. It’s no rocket, but when you lean over and gun the throttle, a grin comes automatically to your face. It certainly is happier to gather momentum than any other Royal Enfield I’ve ridden. It’s not difficult though to leave everything behind in a blur because the handlebar vibrations literally make the stock mirror absolutely useless. The vibrations kick in after around 3500 RPM and can make the experience quite annoying on a long haul. It’s impossible to ignore the fairly heavy vibes when you ride it flat out. The gearbox too isn’t perfect – shifts are heavy in feel and not always positive – but it is nice enough.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE March/April 2014 35
Rather than sitting upright, the rider sits sportily crouched over to the clip-on handlebar and the footpegs have been moved back a bit. But though you need to lean a bit more towards the sporty side, the bike still has a comfortable riding stance. Through traffic the GT was very nimble and once out of the city congestion, it dealt with the highway bends exceptionally. Unlike other Royal Enfield motorcycles, the GT actually handles pretty well. Thanks to the new frame by Harris Engineering and sticky Pirelli Sport Demon tyres, the GT carves corners without breaking a sweat. The rear Paioli Twin gas charged shock absorbers combined with the 41mm telescopic suspension at the front further inspires confidence with its stiff set-up. There’s massive stopping power as well with the 300mm Brembo discs in the front and 240mm at the rear.
VERDICT
Truth be told, there are better motorcycles that will outperform the GT, whether in a straight line or around corners, for its price or much lower. As with every Royal Enfield motorcycle, it also has its own set of problems like the excessive vibrations. But if you can live with all the quirks, it’s a pure emotional joy to ride. There’s a certain aura of some heavenly nostalgic charm around it, and extremely hard to translate into words the blissful experience of raw motorcycling. Also, the bike turns heads wherever you go, because the Continental GT does look tremendously beautiful. So it’s time to get your leather jackets out, don those boots, sunglasses and get that retrolooking half face helmet on. The Royal Enfield Continental GT Café Racer is here! 36

T
The Honda City is a name that is familiar to everyone. Launched globally first in 1981, the City has always been one of Honda’s top selling car and has quite a reputation in Nepal as well of being one of the most loved and desired cars in the affordable range. So the new 2014 Honda City, which is now in its 6th generation, was obviously one of the most awaited car launches in the country. With the roads in the city going through an exciting transformation on its own, the new and improved Honda City couldn’t have really arrived at a better time. We take the new City in both manual and CVT automatic variant for a quick spin around town to tell you what it is all about.
EXTERIORS With the likes of other brands like Hyundai stepping up the style factor in the segment, Honda had to come up with something from their top drawers. And so they did. The new City borrows a lot of design elements from the likes of the global Honda Civic and though the City retains the core profile of its predecessor, there are a lot of noticeable differences. The first thing you notice is the prominent chrome bar on the grill that demands attention. The bonnet has muscular creases to match the sharp designs of the new bumper which has larger fog lamp inserts, and the sleeker headlights have been split into three parts to integrate the blinkers, high
beam and low beam. Honda has added more character to the new City with f lowing and distinctive aerodynamic shoulder lines that run along its side. The new 15-inch alloy wheels are a disappointment though because it feels under designed as compared to the rest of the car, and look quite dull. The rear end has refreshing changes, which carry on the sharper smart design with large horizontally placed wraparound tail lamps connected by a large chrome accent piece on the boot. Overall, the

new 2014 Honda City features much sharper lines and more aggressive lines and angles when compared to the previous generation City. INTERIORS Inside, the changes are bigger and the cabin is a huge improvement over the earlier version. The dashboard is decent with an all piano-black matt finish and high quality plastics have been used. The centre console houses a 5-inch touchscreen multimedia entertainment system that doubles as a screen for the reverse camera. It is though slightly outshone by the first-in-segment innovative touchscreen automatic climate control system. The driver console that houses the speedometer and tachometer is extremely well lit up and well crafted. An interesting mix of green and blue ambient colours, which change according to the driving style, lights the instrument cluster. In terms of space, the increased wheelbase has created more room inside the cabin. The rear seat has enough leg room, even with the front seats moved all the way back. To top it all off, the rear passengers now get their own AC vents and power outlets. The new City has a 510 litre boot which is big enough. The highest variant City features a long equipment list including automatic climate control with touchscreen control panel, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity integrated audio system with 8 speakers and 5-inch screen, engine start/ stop button with Honda Smart Key System, steering wheel 42

with buttons for cruise control, audio and hands-free control, rear A/C vents, reverse parking camera, four power outlets and sunroof. When it comes to safety, the new City has driver and front passenger airbags, Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) which prevents wheel locking and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD).
PERFORMANCE The i-VTEC petrol engine in the new Honda City is the same as its earlier model, but it delivers slightly more power and better fuel efficiency thanks to the variable valve timing and the use of a double needle spark plug. Maximum power is now
AUTOLIFE March/April 2014 43
rated at 118 bhp @ 6600rpm while a maximum torque of 145 nm is available at 4600rpm. The i-VTEC motor feels very refined and under relaxed driving conditions, one has to really wonder whether the engine is switched on. At higher revs though, the City does feel rougher and less refined. Power delivery is impressively linear and the manual 5-speed transmission ensured smooth and flawless gear shifts throughout. The manual is incredibly easy-to-use and a bit revvhappy because it quickly shoots up to good speeds if given the push. The performance is brisk and the petrol is more suited for the enthusiast. The City is also available with a newly developed CVT that is part of Honda’s
44
AUTOLIFE March/April 2014
Earth Dreams Technology. In the CVT automatic though, the power delivery was slightly under par in comparison to the manual. Sudden bursts of power don’t come easy and you do need to plan your moves in advance. However, you couldn’t deem it bad either. Though throttle response on the CVT is not as good on the manual, shifting to the ‘S’ mode does make the engine & transmission work harder and go till the redline. Interestingly for the enthusiasts, the City also gets paddle shifters with 7 ‘virtual’ gear ratios. The shifts are quick without any jerkiness and there is hardly any delay in upshifts or downshifts. The City’s light steering and automatic gearbox make for an ideal combination especially in our congested city and offers relaxed
cruising ability. The automatic variant also gets an ECON button which makes the ECU choose settings to maximise fuel-economy and Honda claims that the automatic is more efficient with a mileage figure of 18 kmpl over the manual’s 17.8 kmpl. In true Honda fashion, the City handles marvellously inside the city at moderate speeds. Even on open stretches of tarmac, where you feel the urge to charge down the straight line, the City takes good care of your need for speed. Braking is crisp and there is little to complain about that. The steering is responsive and light. Although there is some body roll while making tight turns, the City handled well as the suspension has been tuned for precise handling.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
VERDICT The new Honda City in its 6th generation avatar is much better in every way. It looks good, is now more spacious, has new features and is more refined. There is little to fault with the City as it wisely fulfils the needs and wants of the premium mid-level sedan buyer.

THE
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a light and heavy commercial vehicle for mass peoplecarrying needs. The Sprinter is designed primarily for businesses like travel and tour agencies. Power comes from a 2148cc fourcylinder Common-Rail Direct Injection diesel engine in two states of tune. The Sprinter Business 311, which is a high roof model, puts out a power 109 bhp @ 3800 rpm and torque of 270 nm @ 14002400 rpm, and the Sprinter Executive 313 delivers 129 bhp @ 3800 rpm of power and 300 nm @ 1600-2400 rpm of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard. Despite being bigger and taller than everything else, the Sprinter is easily manoeuvrable thanks to a more modern chassis design. It feels notably less truck-like and benefits from the visibility afforded by its colossal windshield and short front end. Also a reasonably carlike driving position and respectable handling help make the Sprinter feel manageable around town. Yes it has a Mercedes-Benz badge, but don’t expect wooden trim, leather upholstery

or the latest high-tech gizmos inside the Sprinter. However, build quality is notably better than in other full-size vans, and it also has a more modern feel to it. Thanks to its sliding-door opening, the Sprinter makes entering and exiting the passenger area a cinch. Inside, it has a space-efficient design and with the low load floor and the high roof option walking upright inside the van is easy. The passenger van features four rows of seats behind the driver and comfortably seats 15 passengers and 1 driver. Comfortable seating space and legroom with reclining seat rows and rollseat for the last seat row offers convenience for all passengers as well as more flexible space for luggage. Notable features in the top variant include 180° opening rear doors, dual air-conditioning with outlets in every row, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, 4-speaker hi-fi sound system of radio and CD/MP3 player with USB, central locking and keyless entry with immobilizer system, joystick gear shift lever on dashboard, interior lighting, electrically adjustable and heated rear-view mirrors. The Sprinter is equipped with disc brakes all around with Electronic Stability Program and ABS to keep the vehicle from lockingup and skidding in panic braking situations. It is also equipped with Acceleration Skid Regulation (ASR), which is activated

automatically whenever the engine is started, to control and enhance the traction with the aid of brakes and engine control. Selfsupporting body including hollow sheetsteel components results in an extremely torsional rigid body with reinforced chassis. Stabilizer bars allow for better road holding and balance. A better crash behaviour is also achieved due to longitudinally fitted engine. There is a Drivers Airbag and safety belts for every seat as well.

The Sprinter is well suited for both urban or suburban environment and the highway. It is one of the best passenger van available in the market and hence significantly more expensive than most other vans in the segment. The extra cost may be hard to justify, but the Mercedes Sprinter brings a premium feel to the large van market and makes a great statement for a tourist bus with the powerful and superior heritage of the German brand.

Commencal has never shied away from attention. They made this abundantly clear by featuring their revamped mountain bike line-up for 2013/2014 in bright fluorescent colours that screams to be noticed. Young and lively, their range of mountain bikes are arguably the most stylish ones you’ll find in Nepal. Stepping up the game in their 2013 collection and moving away from their comfort zone of mountain bikes is Commencal’s first fixed-gear bike, the Acid. This road bike pushes the bar when it comes to style over substance. Sexy, light, minimalistic and sleek, the Acid is definitely an eye candy for bike enthusiasts. But is Kathmandu really ready for slick tyres and no suspensions system? STYLING AND FEATURES The Commencal Acid is a sophisticated piece of art, and it easily stands out in the streets of Kathmandu. This neon yellow bike begs to be noticed, and its intricate tube linkages distinguish its identity. Stepping away from their suspension mountain bikes, Commencal’s Acid is a hard tail with wishbone forks in the front. Its asymmetrical top tubes bump up its aesthetic appeal cementing its uniqueness from other run of the mill road bikes. The narrow Freedom Thickslick tyres with its smooth treads are meant for the city and perform great on the tarmac. The traction it gives on pitched roads is unparalleled to other tyres, under dry conditions. Wet conditions will definitely entail different results.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE March/April 2014 53
THE SLICK TYRES POSITIVELY GLIDE OVER THE SMOOTH TARMAC AND PICKING UP SPEED IS A BREEZE.
Originally, the Acid comes without the freewheeling feature (when you are able to keep moving i.e. “coast” without pedalling) which is more traditional in fixies. But with the addition of the flip flop hub you can now switch between fixie to freewheel and the brakes come included as standard. PERFORMANCE First, the good news. Summer is here, and the freshly pitched roads of Kathmandu are the ideal conditions for the Commencal Acid. The slick tyres positively glide over the smooth tarmac and picking up speed is a breeze. The v-brakes work fine as well and the narrow handlebars are a great feature to help squeeze in between traffic. But there are some glitches with the Acid for our kind of uneven roads. When cycling over bumpy roads, the experience on the Acid isn’t what you would like to call smooth because this one does not come fitted with suspensions to soak in the bumps. Also, the slick tyres could wear out sooner than it’s supposed to. Furthermore, since it is a single speed bike, uphill climbs are a burden and you have to get up and pump up the hills like you’re participating in Tour de Nepal. The good thing though is, you do get a good workout. Overall, the Acid stays true to its minimalist nature and there are very few things you need to worry about. Pedal to move forward, pedal harder to move faster and pull in the brake levers to slowdown/stop.

VERDICT The Commencal Acid might just be the sexiest, sleekest and most attractive bike you can get. When you’re riding the Acid, you attract attention. Lots of it. And if you’re the kind who loves the extra attention, this is the bike for you. Its unorthodox style and urban retro appeal is its main selling point. Also, as far as it’s around the city, this road bike is an ideal urban ride. Especially on smooth paths and pavements, the Acid is divine and it does the job well of getting you from point A to point B. But if point B is situated atop a hill or the route is anything but smooth, you might have to put in a little extra effort. However, even when you’re huffing and puffing, the Acid is sure to make it look good. So if you are a cycling fanatic, this makes for a great addition to your collection. But otherwise, despite the utter aesthetic appeal, sadly this beauty is not really ready for the Nepalese roads, nor are our roads ready for the Acid. Around the city is as far as you’ll get with this bike. Expecting anything more out of it would be sinful because multiple functionality isn’t its strong suit.

RACEMANDU II THE CLOSEST WE COULD GET TO SOME LIVE MOTORCYCLE RACING ACTION IN NEPAL
T

The Satdobato Swimming Complex was an exciting place to be on the 8th of March, 2014. Unlike on any other day, the complex had been laid out to function as a makeshift motorcycle racing track and the entire facility was riding high on adrenaline energy as the keen racers looked forward to prove their mettle in this proving ground. Geared up riders could be seen visibly glowing with excitement as they hustled around the pit area, and it was very encouraging to see companies from the likes of CrossFire, Honda and KTM extending every necessary support to their riders. A variety of raceready motorcycles had been lined up and there was a continuous buzz of revving motorcycles reverberating in the air. Local superbike owners had also turned up to support the championship, and with some of the most exotic high-end motorcycles in Nepal parked in the pit area, the enthusiastic spectators definitely witnessed much more than they had bargained for. It was the place to be for any motorcycle racing enthusiast and the closest one could have gotten to some live circuit racing action in Nepal. The stage had been set for the second season of Racemandu - the only official open category closed-circuit racing championship initiated in Nepal under the affiliation of FĂŠdĂŠration Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), the global governing

body of motorcycle racing and organized by Nepal Automobile Sports Association (NASA). NASA is the only automobile sports related organization registered with the National Sports Council and dedicated to the development and management of motorsports in Nepal. But as with most events in Nepal, the event kicked off hours later than the stipulated time. Such delays not only make it boring for the viewers, but dampens the spirits of the participating racers as well. We really hope that the organizers will not overlook this aspect in the next season. Thankfully, after the brief opening ceremony and the riders had taken their pledge to promote fair and safe racing, the event kicked off with the warm-up practice laps for each category. The practice sessions were an unexpectedly exciting affair as most of the riders could be seen pushing their limits, rather than first familiarizing themselves with the circuit. To improvise on the competition and further boost the scope of the championship, NASA had set up three primary racing categories for this year’s Racemandu. There was a National, Novice and Ladies class. Under the National class, only the top tier winners of Racemandu I and the riders who participated in the racing experience at the MMSC Racing Circuit in Chennai under NASA’s supervision were allowed to participate. The Novice class which was further sub-divided into two categories for 100-198cc and 199250cc motorcycles accommodated the rest of the participants, and the Ladies class was strictly limited to female riders with scooters up to 200cc only. The cash prizes had been set at attractive NRs.30,000/-, NRs.30,000/, NRs.20,000/- and NRs.10,000/- in the both the Novice Class and NRs.15,000/-, NRs.10,000/- and NRs.5,000/- in the Ladies

Class. In the National Class though, only the winner was awarded with a two-way ticket to Bangkok. Apart from the prizes, the top winners will also be eligible to participate and represent Nepal in invitational international racing workshops and competitions. NASA had improvised on the layout of the circuit and it had been designed to be more complex and technical than in the previous championship. The track had been extended to a length of about 1km with a properly laid out mix of straights, high speed corners and tight chicanes. The whole race was carried out following the standard technical racing guidelines set by FIM, and it was a commendable effort by the organizers to have a safety motorcycle inspect the track before the start of every race. The racers in every category put out a great show, and the National class riders particularly displayed some promising talents. It was quite a revelation to witness the level of riding skills that most of the racers displayed lap after lap. Of course, with the riders pushing the limits, accidents were still inevitable and a handful of crashes were accounted for in some of the rounds. But thankfully, there were no serious major injuries to any rider. Volunteers and medical team were generously scattered around the race track to monitor and prevent any untoward incidents from happening. 62

“THE RACERS IN EVERY CATEGORY PUT OUT A GREAT SHOW, AND THE NATIONAL CLASS RIDERS PARTICULARLY DISPLAYED SOME PROMISING TALENTS.”
In the Ladies category, Dikshya Shrestha finished ahead of Shuvani Thapa and Sita Silwal, all riding Honda Dio scooters. In the Novice category, Yamaha R15 riders Bibesh Shrestha, Bipluv Shrestha and Nehal Man Joshi took to the podium respectively in the 100-198cc category, while in the 199-250cc category Saurav Man Shrestha clinched the top title in the CrossFire XZ250RR with Raj Shrestha on Bajaj Pulsar 200NS and Samit Thapa on Bajaj Pulsar 220 taking the runners-up spot. In the final National class, Shane Wilson Moktan on his race-prepped KTM 200 Duke put up an impressive winning show as other two KTM 200 Duke riders Bikram Thapa and Saras Rayamajhi trailed close behind making it a clean sweep for KTM in the premier category. The race then successfully ended with an exciting stunt show put up by the riders from Riders Unified and Madhyapur Riders, followed by the closing prize distribution ceremony. The Racemandu Championship is indeed a commendable effort by NASA to promote safe motorcycle racing in Nepal, and we really look forward to its continuity with more support from participants, spectators and sponsors in the next season. Motoring events like these specially need more encouragement and support from the auto industry to take the championship to newer heights. It’s definitely going to get bigger, better and faster in the next season!

AUTOLIFE PROFILE
MOTORCYCLE Racing is extremely fun. But that does not mean you simply hop on to your bike, fire it up and speed away like there is no tomorrow. Along with the healthy dose of enthusiasm, racing requires a lot of dedication and involvement from the rider to continuously develop his skills for pushing the limits. And the same level of dedication is what we saw in Shane Wilson Moktan, the winner of the premier National class in the Racemandu II Championship. Shane had not only prepared himself well for the race, but had gone to the extent of fine-tuning his bike as well with a host of race winning modifications. Now that is the level of enthusiasm we would like to see in every genuinely passionate riders, even though the prospect of a career in Motorsports in Nepal is still at a very early stage. So we caught up with the winner to share with us his Racemandu experience and interest in motorcycling and racing.
READY TO RACE SHANE WILSON MOKTAN AL: What’s your kind of thing? Motorcycle Touring, Motorcycle Modification or Motorcycle Racing? SW: I love Motorcycle Racing. I just love
that feeling of competition on a motorcycle. Also I would always modify the motorcycle I ride, to adjust it to suit my riding style and so that I get more confidence to go faster.
AL: Your most fun motorcycling experience so far? SW: That’s hard to think as there are many.
Most of the rides I go to have been fun and memorable. So whenever the motorcycle feels good and weather is sunny, I have the most fun out of my motorcycle.
AL: If given a chance to ride to any place in Nepal on a motorcycle of your choice, where would it be to and on what? SW: I would like to ride to Pokhara on the
soon to be launched KTM RC 390. The 64
AUTOLIFE March/April 2014
RC 200 could be slightly stressed on the long straights, but the RC 390 would be the perfect blend of power and handling. So I am looking forward to upgrade to the RC 390 when it’s launched here, and will definitely ride it to Pokhara. AL: Now coming to your impressive racing stint at Racemandu II, we could see that you had tuned your bike to quite an extent for the race. So what are the changes you made on your KTM 200 Duke to ensure that you stayed on the top of the grid? SW: I had done several changes, but not all
of them were specifically for the race. I had upgraded to KTM soft hand grips, shorter gear and rear brake levers, larger 300mm front disc plates (provided by KTM), 45T Rear Sprocket, 390 Duke 112 link X-ring Chain, Metzeler Tyres (provided by KTM), 8mm fork height reduction and Keiti Tank Sidepads. Other changes for better state
of tune were installing KIIRUS 13,000 rpm remapped ECU (provided by KIIRUS Performance), using premium Motul engine oil and replacing new piston, block, fuel pump, valves, valve springs, clutch, clutch springs, clutch cable, throttle cable and disc pads. Some weight reduction was also done by eliminating the headlight, taillight, mudguards, belly pan, pillion handle and pillion footpegs. I got all this done so that the motorcycle becomes faster, and I can control the bike better. AL: Any specific strategy that you religiously took to for further enhancing your personal riding skills to race your best in the championship? SW: My strategy is to spend a lot of time
on the motorcycle, and in the process learn how the motorcycle responds to my inputs. I watch a lot of riding videos, read articles on how to ride faster and try to experiment facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AL: You finished second in last year’s Racemandu Championship and this year raced your way to the top. So how does it feel to finally be on the lead? SW: This year I had prepared better. The
bike felt fast and I had a good feeling with the bike. It definitely feels good to be on the lead, but I’m unhappy because Racemandu III will only be held after a year. I wish they could have executed it every three months or so.
AL: No doubt that the Racemandu Championship was executed well. But is there any aspects of the championship that you were highly unsatisfied with? SW: Yes! I was an angry man racing that
day. There were 9 of us competing in the National category finals and all of us couldn’t fit in one row on the track. But instead of recording our lap times to decide the grid position, the organizers took to a crazy lucky draw method. I was already frustrated with the concept of the lucky draw, and I had good reason to get angrier when my bad luck placed me in the second row behind five riders. Fortunately, even though I started last, I did not make any major mistakes and progressed to the lead.
AL: Racemandu is a promising initiative by NASA to promote safe motorcycle racing and boost the scope of motorsports in Nepal. What in your opinion would be the right way to move ahead for building the prospect of a competitive international standard professional racing scene here in Nepal in the near future? SW: It’s quite obvious that we will first need
a dedicated racing track. Anywhere within 50kms from Kathmandu would be great and I’m sure the venture would be profitable with the level of enthusiasm in the riders.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
MY STRATEGY IS TO SPEND A LOT OF TIME ON THE MOTORCYCLE, AND IN THE PROCESS LEARN HOW THE MOTORCYCLE RESPONDS TO MY INPUTS. AL: It’s the bitter truth, but as of now, racing motorcycles is yet to become a promising career option at least in Nepal. So what’s your personal take on this for giving continuity to your dedication and passion towards motorcycle racing, despite all hurdles? SW: I will always try to give the most I can
to support the development of motorsports in Nepal. And I believe, what we are doing, is already creating a good platform to encourage motorcycle racing. There are many things that I believe can be done for riders of today and tomorrow. 1. Pocket bikes and Pit bikes are inexpensive to race and a parking lot is sufficient to race them. Adults and kids both can improve their riding skills. 2. Dirt/Enduro Racing has a lot of potential for success as we already have an excellent track with the terrain in Nepal. Imagine the highest motorcycle endurance race in the Himalayas. 3. For Road Racing, the guys at NASA are already at it. But like all government organizations, progress is a bit slow.
AL: How closely do you follow the international motorsports scene? Who are the professional racers that you look

what I have learnt on the rides I go to on Saturdays. Developing riding skills take time and one can’t just practice a few weeks before the race and expect to be competitive. One needs to be dedicated to keep learning and improving.
up to for inspiration? SW: I follow the
entire MotoGP Championship very closely. Valentino Rossi has been a great inspiration to me and among the newer riders, Jorge Lorenzo and Stefan Bradl are competitive and consistent as well. In the Moto2 class, Maverick Vinales and Luis Salom are my favourites. My favourite Moto3 riders have moved up to Moto2, but KTM rider Jack Miller of Australia was outstanding in Qatar.
AL: One thing that you despise about the general motorcycling scene here in Nepal. SW: Most bikers want to race, and with the
lack of a proper race track, we dangerously end up racing on the streets. But this needs to be kept out of the streets. A race track should have been there as this will not only reduce road accidents of fast young boys and girls, but riding on a track improves one’s riding skills as well.
AL: Finally, a motorcycle that you wish was parked in your garage. SW: I really wish I had a KTM 1290 Super
Duke R with the KTM PowerParts Racing kit. It’s a crazy motorcycle, and with the KTM PowerParts it’s a 192 bhp monster!

The first ever XC Eliminator race in Nepal helped showcase the speed and power of Nepal’s Top riders. Other firsts were the Amateur Male and Female XC (Cross Country) races, Junior XC Races and an Amateur Downhill. Year after year, the Himalayan Outdoor Festival has brought together almost every adventure enthusiast in the nation, including many foreign participants as well. This time around too, the organizers and supporters did not disappoint. It definitely looks like HOF is here to stay, and we’re pretty stoked about it. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
Here is a brief report on the cycling events and their outcomes:
NIGHT UPHILL RACE
This was the first event to kick off the mountain biking events in the festival that took place on the 21st of March. The race required riders to race on the uphill route from the main road towards the event site and it got more interesting when riders had to do it in the dark and navigate their way only with the help of their headlamps! Tara Thapa Magar deserves a special mention here as she was the only female participant to complete the race with a timing of 31 minutes 39 seconds.

DOWN HILL RACE
Downhill racing is one of the most thrilling, adrenaline filled aspects of cycling and with the abundance of hills surrounding Nepal, there is really no dearth for downhill racers in the country. Two options were offered during the festival, a challenging full tilt track for experienced riders and a gentle roll down for newbies. With riders pushing their limits and speeding down the technical course at breakneck speeds, the viewers were kept at the edge of their seats and the participants off theirs.

CROSS COUNTRY
Cross-Country cycling is the most common discipline of mountain biking. While less publicized than downhill cycling, this is the one that garners the highest levels of participation both recreationally and competitively. Unlike other disciplines of cycling, cross country racing emphasizes endurance above technical prowess and consistency is the key to finishing first. The Amateur race was perfect for first timers while the Eliminator race for the professional was a short course, one lap elimination race where riders went head to head.

Some thirty-odd riders and a fleet of spectators flocked to Hattiban in the fourth edition of the National Downhill Championship held on March 15th, 2014. Though it’s seen a good share of downhill races in the past, the serene hillock on valley’s southern front came abuzz once again as Elite Men, Elite Junior, Open and Masters Category racers gave their best performance rolling and jumping through the harsh trails. Organized by Nepal Cycling Association in collaboration with the government, the much awaited event adhered to international racing standards and policies set by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the global cycling body. Participants included experienced riders from Kathmandu, Dharan and Pokhara, while international cyclists from Yak Attack also got a shot. It’s worth a mention that one confident 9-year-old cyclist Pranav Pokharel also gallantly rode through the trail, thoroughly impressing the audience. With a time of 02:41:06, winner Rajesh Magar 70

made a podium debut in the Elite category with a significant margin over El Yak’s Mangal Lama, 2nd, and Life Cycle’s Shakar Yakthumba, 3rd. National coach Ajay Narsingh Rana stated this downhill event was the deciding factor for the National Downhill Team, which would represent Nepal in various international racing events. “Our riders had evidently prepared very hard for the event and we’re glad it’s turned out as expected. They’ll definitely be a formidable team participating in Indonesia later this year”, he stated. Race organizers did a fine job of pulling off a national-level event quite smoothly, well acknowledged by all the riders. “The trail has improved since I last raced here in January”, said Magar, winner of the race. “Though it’s not as technical as international ones, bigger jumps and road gaps have made it more exciting and challenging. The effort put into details by the organizers definitely shows!” Downhill biking started drawing attention in Nepal since 2007, and in a very short time has catapulted this high-risk sport in the limelight of adventure industry. Thanks to NCA’s active interest in promoting the sport, Nepal is gaining its due reputation as a mountain biking mecca slowly but steadily, with an ever increasing number of valley dwellers taking it up as a hobby!

World Champion Marc Marquez started his MotoGP™ title defence with a victory in the opening round of the 2014 MotoGP™ World Championship in Qatar, beating Valentino Rossi in a close battle, with Dani Pedrosa coming home third. The Repsol Honda rider emerged victorious from a closely-fought contest with Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Valentino Rossi. Starting from pole position, Marquez traded places with Rossi at the front of the field numerous times throughout the twenty-two lap race, before Marquez made the race-winning pass in the final stages to take the checkered flag by 0.259 seconds. In third place at the Qatar Grand Prix was Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa who crossed the finish line 3.370 seconds after his teammate.
Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) as they fell out of their hunt for a podium. Ducati Racing duo Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow did well to finish in fifth and sixth. Crutchlow rode almost running out of fuel during the end of the race on his Ducati debut. Scott Redding (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) saw a terrific start to his premier class season when he managed to beat Nicky Hayden (Drive M7 Aspar) for seventh place by a very slim margin of 0.035 seconds. The top ten was rounded off by Colin Edwards (NGM Forward Racing) and Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing). Non finishers included Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro of Monster Yamaha Tech 3 and Hector Barbera of Avintia Racing (Open Class).
It was a race to forget for the two-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha MotoGP), as he crashed on the first lap itself while leading the pack. Similar fate caught Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda) who also crashed after eight laps while running in front. NGM Forward Racing’s (Open Class) result didn’t come as a surprise amid their spectacular show during testing, as Aleix Espargaro finished fourth. This result though was cashed-in more so because of the crashes of Alvaro Baustista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) and

ROSBERG WINS AUSTRALIAN GP Beating pole man Hamilton, team-mate Nico Rosberg came flying through from third to take the lead in the F1 season’s opening race at Australia. INFO & PHOTOS: www.Formula1.com | Manufacturers
N
Nico Rosberg dominated the first race of Formula 1's new turbocharged hybrid power unit era to win the 2014 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne for Mercedes on 16th March, 2014. The German made a superb start from third on the grid, passing Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull and the polesitting Mercedes of teammate Lewis Hamilton to grab the lead. Rosberg made the most of the W05's pace advantage to streak away from the field at will and record the fourth grand prix victory of his career. Rosberg's team-mate Hamilton slipped back to fourth on the first lap as he struggled with an engine problem in his Mercedes. After initial confusion as to whether he should soldier on, the 2008 world champion retired his W05 into the pits as early as the third lap of 57. Australian home hero Ricciardo completed a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for Red Bull by narrowly beating McLaren's Kevin Magnussen to finish second. The world champion squad looked to be in desperate trouble in pre-season testing, but made enormous strides with its Renault-engined car in Australia. Things were though less rosy for Ricciardo's world champion teammate Sebastian Vettel, who started out of sequence on the medium tyre after a

disappointing result in qualifying on Saturday consigned him to a row six start. His struggles with a lack of power from his Renault engine continued into the race and he joined Hamilton in retirement after only five laps. McLaren rookie Magnussen completed the podium on his F1 debut, after surviving a wild oversteer moment shortly after the start. The reigning Formula Renault 3.5 champion beat team-mate Jenson Button to third spot by 3.2 seconds. The 2009 world champion started down on row five after his final flying lap in Q2 was spoiled by yellow flags, but he used smart strategy to jump from the fringes of the top 10 to sixth as the safety car came out, then overhaul Fernando Alonso's Ferrari and Nico Hulkenberg's Force India at the second round of stops. Williams driver Bottas overcame JeanEric Vergne's wildly oversteering Toro Rosso and Hulkenberg in the closing stages to finish sixth, but will rue what might have been after a messy race. The Finn starred in the early stages as he worked the Williams through to the top six from 15th on the grid, but the Finn touched the wall coming out of Turn 10 on lap 11 and broke his right rear wheel. He avoided suspension damage and pitted for a replacement, before working his way
back through the field. A decent points finish was at least some reward for Williams after Felipe Massa was wiped out by Kamui Kobayashi's locked-up Caterham at the first corner on the first lap. Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari beat the Toro Rossos of Vergne and F1 rookie Daniil Kvyat as these three completed the top 10. Perez's Force India, both Saubers, and both Marussias also made the flag as 15 cars in total made the finish. Jules Bianchi finished eight laps down and unclassified after failing to make it off the grid, causing an aborted start and forcing him to start from the pitlane behind the Lotus of Romain Grosjean. Grosjean made it to lap 45 before retiring his troublesome twintusk E22, while team-mate Pastor Maldonado and Caterham's Marcus Ericsson also stopped out on-track shortly after half-distance It was indeed an exciting start to the new era of F1 and the racing was good!

LEWIS HAMILTON TAKES VICTORY AT MALAYSIA The 2008 World Champion records the 23rd Grand Prix win of his career INFO & PHOTOS: www.Formula1.com | Manufacturers
L
Lewis Hamilton sparked his 2014 Formula 1 season into life by dominating the Malaysian Grand Prix on 30th March, 2014. The 2008 World Champion made up for the disappointment of early retirement from the season-opener in Australia by comfortably beating Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg to victory by 17 seconds at the Sepang International Circuit. Melbourne winner Rosberg maintained his position as championship leader by finishing second. He jumped reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel off the line and successfully repelled both Red Bulls after a massive tank-slapper coming through Turn 3 on the first lap. He reported struggling with his rear tyres in the early stages and could not keep pace with Hamilton. Rosberg finished a comfortable 7.2s clear of third-placed Vettel, who put his first championship points on the board after his own early retirement in Australia. The Red Bulls were side-by-side through the opening sequence of turns, as Vettel’s team-mate Daniel Ricciardo went round the outside at Turn 2. Rosberg’s massive wobble coming though the long sweeping righthander at Turn 3 allowed the reigning world champion to come back at his team-mate briefly, but Ricciardo held firm, only to be passed on lap four when Vettel slid up the inside at Turn 1 unchallenged.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
Ricciardo had to get his elbows out again after the first round of pitstops, successfully rebuffing the efforts from Fernando Alonso to pass as he rejoined. The Red Bull prevailed over the Ferrari after more side-by-side action through Turns 1, 2 and 3. But this proved a moot point ultimately, as Ricciardo suffered a botched late pitstop that required mechanics to push his car back to the Red Bull pit to refit the left front wheel correctly. He rejoined the race, but then suffered a front wing failure on the start-finish straight, having broken it by running wide out of Turn 14 coming onto the back straight. He retired shortly afterwards. Ricciardo’s misfortune promoted a personal duel between Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg, in which the Spaniard again prevailed to take fourth. Hulkenberg’s Force India used an unconventional two-stop strategy to get ahead of the Ferrari, but ultimately Alonso used the advantage of fresher tyres to get ahead in the closing stages. Jenson Button completed a stealthy climb from 10th on the grid to complete the top six, ahead of the duelling Williams of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas. Button’s McLaren team-mate Kevin Magnussen recovered from an early five-second stop-go penalty for puncturing the right-rear tyre on Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari to finish ninth, while
Formula 1’s youngest ever points scorer Daniil Kvyat scored again by rounding out the top 10 for Toro Rosso. Raikkonen recovered to a pointless 12th, behind Romain Grosjean’s much-improved Lotus. The podium in Sepang once again demonstrated Mercedes’ superiority over the rest of the grid. It was the first one-two finish for the Silver Arrows since the Italian GP in 1955. It was also Lewis Hamilton’s 100th points scoring finish in a Formula 1 Grand Prix. F1 now heads to Bahrain on 6th April, 2014. AUTOLIFE March/April 2014 77
