Owner’s Review

I always wanted to drive a sedan car, and a few months ago I finally thought of purchasing one. To do so I started doing a little research on the best ones we could find in Nepal. I visited a few showrooms and talked to a few people and finally made my decision. Skoda Rapid had everything I wanted in my car, i.e., a good balance of cost, comfort, and efficiency.
Kiran Kumar Limbu
Goalkeeper (Nepal National Team, Three Star Club)
I ride a full option car and I must say that till now, the car meets my expectations. For a luxurious car I think the cost is relatively lower than that of other cars of the same category. When it comes to designs and looks, Skoda is clearly a winner. It has a really fresh and young design and has the ability to capture the hearts of the young and the older generations. The interior is spacious and the seats are highly comfortable. I have taken the car for a few long drives, and I did not face any problems, neither with the engines nor with the comfort. The other thing I like about this car is its handling and performance, the engine is very powerful and the car has a very good pickup, one is bound to have a good time while driving it in the highways. And the customer service of Skoda is simply outstanding; the people are really polite and always eager to help. So all in all I have had a good experience with this car and the company as a whole. It’s just been 6 months that I have driven this car, but I have had no problems so far. Though I wish the parts of the car were a bit cheaper, I have to admit that this car is a good value for money. I would certainly recommend it to others who are thinking of buying a sedan for themselves.

PAIRED WITH A SIMPLE FRONT APRON AND LARGE FRONT MUD GUARD, THE SCOOTER EMBODIES THE FAMILY SCOOTER THEME.
The products that Yamaha produces usually have a few things in common: style, performance and sportiness. More recently, they have ventured out into the scooter market with the Ray and Ray-Z. The Ray was originally targeted for the female populous and the Ray-Z came in later for the men. Now, they have launched the newest and the third scooter based on the same platform: the Yamaha Alpha. After catering to both the genders, the Alpha is now for the family, allowing Yamaha to cover all the three sub-niches in the automatic scooter market with the Ray platform. Dubbed as the most comfortable scooter in the market, Yamaha has set the bar high for themselves as they have a lot to live up to.
STYLING
The Yamaha Alpha features subtle styling, despite being the newest amongst the three scooter siblings. The front of the scooter has swooping panels with the headlight mounted on the handlebar. The indicators have a hint of tear drop design. Paired with a simple front apron and large front mud guard, the scooter embodies the family scooter theme. On the rear, the taillights drop down a notch while the indicators are placed slightly higher up. One of the reasons the Yamaha Alpha claims to be the most comfortable scooter around is its seat length of 800mm. And from the side profile, you can really see facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE August 2014 33
that the seat is pretty elongated. Thankfully, it doesn’t negatively affect the appearance of the scooter too much. However, the entire look is slightly on the more conservative side. The long seat allows the rider and pillion to ride in ease without the sometimes annoying digging of the pillion’s toes into the rider’s ankles. The floorboard easily accommodates the rider’s feet, which felt slightly cramped in the Ray. The saddle height is 775mm, which sits you a full 15mm taller on the Alpha, compared to a Ray. To compensate for the lack of front apron stowage and hook, the Alpha comes with a massive 21 liter under seat storage. Although it claims that it could fit a full face helmet, it seemed quite a stretch as we were only able to fit in a full face helmet with a lot of difficulty. It has simple looking meters – just a speedo, odometer and fuel gauge with the usual tell tale lights. The switchgear is crisp and works perfectly. The Alpha’s built is based upon the Ray platform, but it feels larger and roomier, a good thing given the Ray’s low, petite and more lady friendly proportions. But the Alpha is still a light scooter, just like the Ray, weighing an identical 104kg (kerb).
PERFORMANCE:
We loved the Ray and its spunk, and the same 113cc engine is carried over to the Alpha and it retains its refined nature and smoothness due to its aluminum structure. Getting on it, it starts briskly with a push of the button and it performs well. The Alpha produces 7.1 PS of power at 7500 RPM and 8.1 Nm of torque at 5500 RPM and it feels quick getting off its mark. The low and mid end torque are a boon for traffic where the Alpha excels with ample torque to push you through without a hitch. However, it does lack in the top end power which can come into play in the highways. In the city, it is a winner. Maneuvering through traffic is a cinch. The firm setup of the telescopic front forks and springs at the back ensures good handling, although it lacks the smoothness when it comes to nasty bumps. The upright seating position combined with its well cushioned XL-size seat makes sure riding for longer stint is comfortable, just as promised.

VERDICT:
Just like the Ray-Z, the Yamaha Alpha is a very strong product that carries on the Yamaha DNA. It looks good, despite its conservative designs and fits perfectly into the family scooter segment. It is a descent performer, particularly in the city traffic. However, there are a few things that Yamaha have left out purposefully which could have been useful. The front storage compartments in the apron could be useful and the lack of a brake lock lever can cause problems when parking on slopes. The Alpha does well when it comes to riding quality, handling and comfort, but added amenities and frills might have been the icing on the cake.

Her parents are into motorcycling and her grandmother rode a motorcycle during the war; it seems only fair to assume that badassery runs in the family.
leaving in a couple of days and then I will go all the way down as far as East Timor, as far as I can possibly go through Malaysia. Then I will get a boat or fly, I am not sure yet, across to Australia Then I ride across Australia, from Darwin to Sydney. From Sydney I’ll fly straight to South America, again the southernmost tip to South America.
But she isn’t your typical burly Hell’s Angel, and she’ll be the first to admit it. “I’m certainly no expert and I don’t confess to being a demon on two wheels. In fact I am a bit of a potterer really. This adventure isn’t about speed. It’s not really even about the bike. It’s about living, learning and enjoying!”
From there I will fly to Buenes Aires and ride down to Oshwaya (Delfrego) then I go across to Antartica.
Steph plans to circumnavigate the world in 15 months to 2 years, hitting at least 42 countries and 6 continents. Equipped with a two man tent and a few essential items in her luggage, Steph found her way to Nepal where she had been staying at the Katmandu Guest House. We got in touch with her and got to talking about her journey till now and what she had planned for for the rest of the trip. What got you to get on your bike and travel the world?
I had started planning this trip about a year ago, well it took about a year to plan it out. Before that, I was doing all sorts of different jobs. I was co-owner of RedMoto Adventures, an offroad motorcycle school, with my business partner who was a Dakar rider. He was the real expert in the riding, but then we started working on that together and when it came to an end I decided that this was the time to plan and get going. What was your route plan?
Well originally I kind of just drew a line around the world and then I started planning and then researching and you find out different things along the way. I went across to Poland and down to Serbia across to Bulgaria to Turkey then over to Iran. Originally I wanted to travel through Pakistan too, but there were quite a few problems, especially for a white woman riding alone. It had a lot of risks involved. So, I decided to go around and I went down south to the southernmost tip of Iran and then across to Dubai and then I flew to Mumbai and then rode up all the way to Himalayas up and then across to Nepal... and here I am.
Gettting permission to do that will probably the hardest part of the trip: getting across to Antartica. Only 4 people have done it, reason being it is difficult to get the permision to get the motorcycle across. Nobody will take you, but I kept trying and decided to avoid commercial shipping and try private yachts with adventurers who might be attempting to cross it themselves. And luckily I got a couple from New Zealand to agree to take me. We are going in a small yacht and across a passage which is quite deadly but we are going for it; we should be about three weeks there and then I will ride to South America all the way to North America and across Canada, because I was born in Canada, so I want to ride right the way across. Then I will go right over to Africa and then ill head home through Spain, Portugal and France. How are you planning to work the budget out?
The trip will take me 18 and half months, I have spent 4 and a half month so far, but my budget will only sustain for 15 months though. We live in hope, really. I started with a really small amount of money and I decided to set a date and go for it and I have done so. To this point I have gained a lot of sponsorships. Honda sponsored me; they gave the bike and a little money. Private companies and other motorbike companies have also helped us a lot financially, so we are getting there and we just need a little more support. It’s really expensive for us to get across Antarctica, especially because of the yacht. I’m living on the budget 5 pounds a day for food and 10 pounds a day for accommodation, and this is fine in places like India and Nepal but it will be quite expensive when you get to places like North America. But I have my tents and my camping gears, so I should be fine
Where will you be headed next?
What gears do you have?
My next stop would be Thailand. I will be
I have around 40 litres of luggage. I don’t

have a lot of clothes with me so I don’t really have a lot of choices, but I am usually in my riding gears so it really doesn’t matter. I also have my laptop/camera with me, so that I can connect with people. I also have some minor spares like spare clutch levers, things like that. Why Honda?
Because Honda is reliable, it does what it says, it’s not flashy, it’s simple but effective and it keeps going. There was no doubt in my mind about Honda. What have you done to the CRF?
Not much really, it’s pretty much standard. I put on some heated grips which has helped greatly at higher altitudes, a belly pan too for protection, I changed the front sprocket from a 14 to a 13. Is it your first time in Nepal?
It’s my first time in Nepal and I love it. I got the chance to go to Nagarkot, Pokhara and Bandipur as well. One thing you loved about Nepal
It has to be the mountains and also the people. Do you carry extra fuel?
Well not till I got to the Himalayas, but now I do. I carry extra 5 litres. I have a 12 litre tank on my bike, that’s something I changed on the bike. What has been the highlight of the trip?
Everything has been fantastic actually. Getting to ride upto the highest motorable road, despite everyone saying she (Honda CRF 250) couldn’t do it. There were a few rough patches too. The worst was in India where I didn’t do my homework and got caught in a massive festival procession in the sweltering heat. It took me 8 hours to do 10kms. And I also woke up to a mouse chewing my feet which was also very unpleasant. You can follow Steph on her blog at www. stephmoto-adventurebikeblog.com AUTOLIFE August 2014 37

Toyota has charmed their way into the hearts of the Nepali people where they rooted themselves in for many years. Their newest entrant bursts into the hatchback market hoping to stand out for the customers who are already spoilt for choice. The hatchback segment has tough competition where brands like Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki closely guard their territory. But Toyota have proved to be tough and are more than ready to get into the race. United Traders Syndicate Pvt Ltd (UTS), sole distributer for Toyota vehicles in Nepal, launched the brand new Liva into the entry-level premium hatchback segment in the Nepalese market. Loyalty and a reputable brand name aside, the Liva has to be very impressive to make room in the cutthroat hatchback segment of Nepal. Toyota has entered the slugfest.
LOYALTY AND A REPUTABLE BRAND NAME ASIDE, THE LIVA HAS TO BE VERY IMPRESSIVE TO MAKE ROOM IN THE CUTTHROAT HATCHBACK SEGMENT OF NEPAL. TOYOTA HAS ENTERED THE SLUGFEST.
EXTERIOR The Liva isn’t the eccentric looking hatchback and is pretty neutral when it comes to designs, but it has some style elements that would be appreciated in Nepal. A distinctive sleek front grille with a brilliant chrome finish and sculpted smile line surface enhances the road presence of the car. Toyota has gone to extra lengths to spruce up the facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

car with side skirts, roof and bumper spoilers. The rear of the Liva is where the similarities end between the Etios’ sedan and the hatchback. This hatchback has a huge chrome strip right below the rear windshield, which stands out in a good way. The three dimensional combination lamps add up to the good looks of the car. The sleek new fin-patterned rear combination lamps add to the Liva’s dynamic look. The Liva also features body coloured outside rear side view mirrors and door handles accentuated with chrome strips. Its 12-spoke alloy wheels give the hatchback a stylish and trendy zest.
INTERIOR The interior of the Toyota Etios Liva is probably the best thing about the car. Toyota has managed to keep the interiors of the car simple while still offering ample interior space and a spacious, easy to use luggage space. The seats are ergonomically designed with height-adjustable driver’s seat along with adjustable front and rear head rests. A stylish instrument panel, including speedometer and tripmeter, is placed near the dashboard. The three-spoke steering wheel comes in dual tone along with the rest of the interior. Toyota Liva features a newly developed air

conditioning system with powerful and multidirectional vents that ensure superior cooling inside the cabin. The car also features a classfirst ‘clean air filter’, which is standard across all grades for purified air in the cabin. Toyota Liva comes fully strapped with features that are common to the other B-segment car. The Liva has power steering, power windows, remote central locking, dash integrated music system, steering mounted audio controls, rear defogger, steering adjustment and various other features that are aimed at providing maximum comfort to the passengers. The Liva also features USB, CD, Aux-in and remote, manual AC/Heater, speed meter with tacho and combimeter with new blue illumination. Toyota Liva boasts of various active and passive safety features that match with the global safety standards. It’s impact absorbing body structure ensures maximum protection as it absorbs impact across the body, keeping the cabin intact. The Liva also features SRS airbags for both driver and passenger for added safety. Furthermore ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) ensures complete vehicle control and a smooth stop.
PERFORMANCE A 3NR-FE, Gasoline, 4-Cylinder 16V, DOHC petrol engine acts as the powerhouse facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

of the Liva hatchback, smoking out a maximum power of 59kW and maximum torque of 104Nm. The modestly powerful engine is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox. The engine is responsive at low revs and takes up the slack well, which is likely to make it immensely easy to drive on our roads. The transmission is also very slick. The Toyota Liva comes with electric power steering that offers excellent maneuverability and the tilt features ensure an ergonomic driving experience. The Liva’s suspension boasts of McPherson strut in the front and torsion beam in the back.
VERDICT As a city car, the Liva ticks all the right boxes. It is spacious with decent looks, good ride quality, delivers a good mileage and more importantly it is a more affordable Toyota. It might not impress the speed demon within you but it is a practical, no-nonsense, fun city car, which is what Toyota has aimed for. However, considering that the hatchback market has a lot of competition, the affordable Toyota might still fall on the pricier side overall. Yet, when it comes to brand-trust, price, fuel economy, space and looks, it appears to be highly satisfactory. Remember, it is the cheapest Toyota available at the moment. 56

BIKASH MALLA NOTHING BUT THE BEST Most engineers around won’t be seen riding around in exclusive handmade Ellsworth mountain bikes or driving around in a Mercedes Benz M Class; but Bikash Malla isn’t like most engineers. A civil engineer by profession, Bikash Malla falls far from the typical geeky stereotype.

He owns and works as Executive Director at Prera Nirman Sewa P. Ltd, a construction company. Very much into fitness, he loves riding around in pedal powered machines and he has two of the best available in town. And with a premium SUV to boot, he definitely caught our fancy. We caught up with him and talked about his experiences and his collection of the best of the best available. AL: So tell us what’s parked in your garage at the moment? BM: Right now I own two SUV’s: a
Mercedes Benz M Class and a Nissan Patrol. I also have two mountain bikes: an Ellsworth Epiphany and Commencal Meta 5 Carbon. AL: Which vehicle and mountain bike do you usually ride? BM: It’s usually the Mercedes and my
Ellsworth.
AL: What do you prefer more; bikes, cars or cycles? Why? BM: I have to go with cycles mainly due
to the positive more physical and mental health effects.Plus, they are considered to be clean and green. And what better way to explore places than on a mountain bike. It will take you places 4 wheelers couldn’t even dream of going. AL: Hatchbacks, Sedans or SUVs? BM: SUVs. Always! AL: How did you first learn to ride/drive and which is the first car/bike you had a go on? BM: In 1992, when I was pretty young,
I would sneak in my dad’s car when he would be resting after lunch. Then I would ‘persuade’ my driver to take the car out silently, which sadly was by pushing it out from the garage without turing on the ignition. And then it was just a matter of driving without letting anyone else know. The car I had back then was a Land Rover Defender, it was my first love. Maybe that is the reason behind my obsession with SUVs.
AL: Till date, on which car or bike you have had the best ever riding/driving experience? BM: I would have to say on my Mitsubishi
Pajero, which I used to own. This SUV has charmed me right from the start.
AL: Personally, what have been the pros and cons of owning an exotic set of wheels in Nepal? BM: Besides being a complete head turner,
exotic vehicles are usually luxurious, technologically well equipped and with a lot of safety features. However, on the downside, you can’t just be driving freely around the roads, especially in a place like Kathmandu; firstly because of the unmanaged roads, and second because of other careless riders/drivers on these roads. Also, the high maintenance costs involved are something to think about.
AL: One wicked or crazy thing that you have done on wheels? BM: Since I am a safe and ethical driver,
I have to say there have been no such incidents so far.
AL: Your most memorable moment on a car or bike or bicycle (mountain bike)? BM: The road trip to Mustang in my
Mitsubishi as well as on the Ellsworth I did last year was extraordinary.
AL: Where do you think is the best destination to drive/ride to in Nepal? BM: Even though the routes are
challenging I would say the best destination to ride is Mustang (upper as well as lower). Apart from being immensely beautiful; Mustang has delicious food, generous hospitality and great culture. It’s the closest thing to heaven on earth.
AL: In your opinion, what is the worst thing about driving/riding in Nepal and what is the best? BM: Unethical driving is a pain. Seriously,
does anyone even know how to drive properly? Ironically, the best thing about driving in Nepal is the slack implementation of traffic rules, which can be beneficial from time to time.
AL: If you were given complete control of the country, what changes would you bring about in the automotive scene of Nepal? BM: First, I would slash high end taxes,
because I think it’s ridiculous. Second, I would promote hybrid vehicles. And seeing the bizarre driving habit of people, I would definitely change the procedure of getting the driving license for sure.
AL: Have you ever been in the MA PA SE police checkings? If so, any funny incident? BM: Not yet.
AL: Is there an ultimate dream car/bike that you’d like to have parked in your garage? BM: For me seeing the Legendary Mercedes
AL: Your message or word of advice to all the auto lovers and owners in the country. BM: Love your machine and your machine
AL: If you could wish for one automobile marquee to have a showroom here in Nepal, not yet present, which would it be? BM: Porsche
Lastly, don’t let the situation change you, you have the capacity to change the situation.
G Class parked in my garage would be the ultimate dream.
will love you back. Be sensible, be ethical (follow traffic rules and regulations) and drive Safe.
AL: Is there a driver usually behind the wheels of your car or is it you who takes charge? BM: From the day I could control the
car confidently, it has always been me. However, due to work, traffic, rash driving and health concerns, I am also thinking of hiring a driver just to remain safe.

HERO XTREME: CITY FIT WORDS: AUTOLIFE TEAM | PHOTOS: BIBHAS MAHARJAN SUWAL
Hero Honda remained the undisputed champions in the eyes of many when it came to producing commuter motorcycles. The combination of Japanese precision build in engine quality and India’s mass production and distribution made Hero Honda an insurmountable force. In 2001 it became the largest two-wheeler manufacturer globally. But in 2010, Honda decided to move out of their joint venture and what remained was Hero MotoCorp.

Because Hero was reliant on their Japanese counterpart for the technology in their bikes, this was a matter of concern as Honda would be providing it only up till 2014. And the fact that the Honda moniker would no longer be associated with the company, many people started feeling a little iffy. When Hero MotoCorp displayed their entire range of new and refreshed products at the October event in 2013, everybody was stunned. Since then, they have been launching in two phases: the commuter motorcycles and the performance motorcycles. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
The 2014 Hero Xtreme is one of their latest motorcycles that have launched themselves back into the 150cc market. They showed promise with the loved CBZ Xtreme, so here’s what the Hero Xtreme had to bring. STYLING The Hero Xtreme is a good looking machine and it does a decent job of standing out amongst the 150cc crowd. The headlight cowl is sleek with pilot lamps positioned as an eyebrow; eye catching yes, but not aggressive. A huge trapezoid speedometer (in some ways reminiscent of the 90’s
prediction of futuristic style) encompasses the key indicator that signifies the new engine immobilizer, the side stand warning feature and the analog rev counter and digital console. Another convenience feature is the key hole that stays lit all the time, and for one hour after you remove the key. This can help find you locate your motorcycle in the dark parking lots in Thamel, we guess. Designed with deep knee recesses, the tank has a sleek appearance and the chrome-like Xtreme’ badge was well integrated into the shape. However, once you actually get onto the bike, the tank does appear to be really AUTOLIFE August 2014 63

small and does not really give the bike a bulky feel, not that it was promised as part of the package. A one piece seat starts from the tank all the way up to the end of the tail piece and split grab rails which have been carried over from the CBZ. Under the seat is a mobile charging port which could be useful for some situations, however, removing the seat every time can be a pain. The tail end was impressive with an all LED unit and indicators moved from beside the tail lamps to the stalks. PERFORMANCE With the same tried and trusted 149.22cc Honda engine from the CBZ, produces 14.4 BHP of power at 8500 RPM and 12.8 Nm of torque at 6500 RPM, which is mated to a 5-speed transmission. However, it seemed to struggle to get to the 60km/h mark than the CBZ which seemed to bolt for the digits. Overall, the punchy low and mid-end helps you potter around town with ease. The handling is pretty neutral and does not bring any new exciting things into the equation, but it isn’t disappointing. The chassis is the same as the old bike and has gas charged rear shocks. Stopping capability was just satisfactory with a 240mm front disc brake as standard and a 220mm rear disc brake as an option to the 130mm drum brake. With the disc option on the bike we test rode; it left us wanting a little more bite. 64

VERDICT The Hero Xtreme is a good looking motorcycle with average capabilities. Hero MotoCorp have been on top of their game when it comes to mid range commuter and performance motorcycles and they have always kept everyone’s expectations very high. The Xtreme does not tick all of the boxes, but it is not a total disappointment either. Taking care of the details like slightly shoddy welds and some refinement and excitement on the power and handling fronts, this motorcycle should be a winner. The good thing is, the Xtreme will not burn a searing hole in your wallets and is fairly economical with a claimed mileage of 55kmpl+. It will get you around town without skimping too much on the styling sector, which is a pretty good deal for most of us.

The Giant Set to Reign Supreme In the Nepali mountain bike market, the Giant brand name is exactly that, a giant. It is probably the most widely sold mountain bike brand and possibly the most trusted. With a proper build, great durability and spot on technical geometry, Giant bikes have proven their worth time and again. One of the newest additions to their already extensive arsenal of Giant mountain bikes in Nepal is the new Reign 2. Its predecessor, the Reign was a competent all-mountain bike and got great reviews as an excellent all around bike. The Reign 2 aims to step it up a notch and AutoLife Magazine along with Santosh Rai from the Himalayan Single Track gave it a go.
FEATURES
Giant have always been crafty when it comes to bending aluminum into beautiful frames, and the Reign 2 executes that to perfection. They have created an efficient Allux frameset that does not have one straight tube in the frame, and it looks good too. And for a 6 inch travel machine, it is extremely light as well; tipping the scales at just over 13kgs. The top and down tubes feature sweeping bends and semi-rectangular profiles, and the theme continues on to the rear where the rectangular seat and chainstays are squeezed, looped and tapered to fit around 2.35-inch tires. Giant chose Shimano’s threadless, PressFit bottom bracket system, which provides for a wider shell and stiffer down tube. There are no chain-guide tabs on the bottom bracket shell and cable routing is designed to be functional, with every hose and housing directed inside the front triangle. In the front, the forks feature the RockShox Revelation RL Solo Air with 15QR Through Axle while the Monarch RL shock that is outfitted with a highvolume air can be seen used in the rear shock. The seat post is the Giant Contact Switch with remote for easy adjustment.
PERFORMANCE
As an all mountain machine, the Giant Reign 2 remains playful yet stable and responsive in all conditions. It proves that it is a great climber and pedals well uphill, defying its weight and performing well in more technical areas. Although some riders might feel that the tires could have been slightly bulkier, it facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE August 2014 69
inspires the confidence you need to push yourself to new terrains as it is built for grip rather than rolling speed. That doesn’t mean acceleration is an issue for the Reign, it just makes you feel like you could push harder when going into turns. And when it comes to downhill, that’s where the Reign 2 shines. It has amazingly good downhill capabilities and the very free moving RockShox heartily accepts punishment rejoicing at anything large or small you throw in its path. Despite looking like it is bouncing all over the place, the easy movement is more visibly than physically noticeable.
VERDICT
As an all mountain bike, the Reign 2 proves itself through and through. Its acceleration will satisfy the cross country enthusiast and its nimbleness and responsiveness will make the downhill rider smile; maybe slightly more satisfying for the former. A wider handle bar might have helped make the Giant Reign 2 a meaner trail shredder. It is also very comfortable for longer rides which are endure or downhill orientated. However, the bike is not specked for climbing but for rides with less climbing and more descending. It scores high points in terms of handling, acceleration, technical abilities and over all fun. And with a strong brand name to back up that package, the Giant Reign 2 is certain to become a favorite.

MONSOON RIDING WITH HIMALAYAN SINGLE TRACK WORDS: ANKIT SHAKYA | PHOTOS: SANTOSH RAI
Monsoon riding might not appeal to many people, but it has a thrill of its own. The same terrain you rode in the winter changes drastically during the monsoon, sometimes turning into slippery slush. Thus, it pushes the rider to test his/her skills and gives them a chance to challenge themselves to improve. With the slippery terrain you also learn to utilize body balance. And once the clouds clear, the views are just amazing. Santosh Rai from Himalayan Single Trek is as avid a cyclist as they come and most of the crew in this ride equals his caliber. Like many cyclists all over the country, for Santosh and his friends, a weekly ride is customary and they rarely give it a miss. In this particular ride, they tackled the monsoon terrains a little while away from the capital. Their short ride took them from the Himalayan Single Track HQ at Thamel to Balaju and on to Mudkhu where they stopped for a tea break. They then went on to Teen Piple and then back to Thamel to end the ride. The circuit ride is approximately 28kms. MONSOON RIDING TIPS FROM HST
Monsoon riding does take its toll on the rider, but it also wreaks havoc on your bike. The mud and rain make it a messy ordeal. So, it is essential that you take good care of it when you ride in the monsoon. Here are some things you need to keep in mind.

AUTOLIFE August 2014

• The brake pads will be amongst the first component to give way. Always make sure your brakes are functioning at their full capacity before every ride. Pads that last a full season in the dry will run metal to metal on the rims in a week or two of wetweather training rides. Also, most rotors require a full revolution before the brake pads squeeze the water from the braking surface and begin stopping. Plan ahead and brake early. • Being cold and wet is a good way to get sick. Wear a waterproof jacket. Remember, your body sweats rain or shine, so your jacket and garments must breathe (chose Gore-Tex-type fabrics or ventilated outer garments). • Cornering can be tricky in the mud. Make sure you keep as much of your weight on the outside pedal as possible and try to keep the bike as upright as possible. • Use your fenders. It will make riding more comfortable and your vision will be better without all that water and mud splashing up towards you. • Use heavier/Wet chain lube, and lots of it. It’s better to have a chain that requires cleaning than to have it seize up with rust. • It is a good idea to ride at a slower pace than usual during the monsoon to keep safe.

Kathmandu is a great city to live in, the most annoying problem we share might be the lack of electricity. You have everything that is required to make life go by smoothly, from the basic necessities to luxurious recreational facilities. And when things get difficult, there are facilities that can heal diseases for people teetering on the brink of death. A birth of a new born baby is a joyous miracle greeted with smiles, joys and celebrations. Only 45kms away from the Kathmandu Valley, in the southern Lalitpur VDC of Pyutar tells a very different story. Despite being so close to the well facilitated urban heaven, Pyutar lacks the basic infrastructure to facilitate the birth of a new born baby. Because it is difficult to afford for many to go to Kathmandu to deliver their baby, many mothers are forced to it at home. “Most births take place at night. Due to load shedding and lack of an inverter I deliver babies with just one hand as the other holds a torch. It is a scary situation,” said Gyanu Timilsina,Auxiliary 76

nurse, Pyutar VDC Lalitpur. “Since the demolition a temporary birthing center, all new births now take place at home. Few expecting mothers who can afford will travel to Kathmandu a month ahead to give birth.” A tradition that began in 2011, the Kathmandu Kora gave it continuity by shifting their focus from the less developed regions of Nepal to a region much closer to the capital for this year. Organized in association with Socialtours and Save the Children Nepal, the Kathmandu Kora 2014 had planned to raise up to Rs. 2 million to build an Eco-Designed building, providing the best facilities to the women and children in this remote VDC. Overall, the rally had been segmented into 3 categories: the 50kms, the 75kms and the 100kms. This year there was a participation of more than 1500 participants from all over Nepal, where approximately 1300 rode in the 50k category, 170 people in the 75k category and 60 people in the 100k. The riders of the different categories were distinguished by 3 different colored jerseys, red, blue and yellow respectively. The ride passed through Kirtipur this year, where riders were greeted with traditional Dhimme bajas and other Newari instruments. It brought out the essence of the Newar community of Kirtipur, which was a nice
addition to the rally. At the end of the rally, medals reading out the message ‘everyone is a winner’ were distributed by members of 1974 AD to those who completed the rally. Till now, the money collected sums up to Rs. 12 lakhs as pledges from various sources. Which is a very good amount; however the targeted sum is Rs. 2 millions and they are still running short. So if you still haven’t made your pledges yet, you can do so by going to www.kathmandukora.net. To raise more funds, Socialtours are selling out raffle tickets for Rs. 300 with a prize of a Giant Bike worth Rs. 55000. The money raised through this event will be channeled through Karma Foundation with zero incurred administrative cost to the District Health Office Lalitpur. Save the Children has received a written approval from the District Health Office Lalitpur to construct a new birthing center in Pyutar VDC. Without the help of Kathmandu Cycle City 2020, volunteers from Thames International College and other biking clubs, this event would not have been possible. Thanks to them and the core organizers, Pyutar might still have a chance. Till now, the money collected sums up to Rs. 12 lakhs as pledges from various sources.
