EDITORIAL THE FANTASTIC ISSUE

W

We’ve had an ongoing love affair with cars and open roads. To be honest, there are very few things that hold as much appeal as the classic road trip that takes us away from the city. This month we were lucky enough to take a road trip to the Mithila culture Capital: Janakpur. And we did it in Tata’s newest offering the Tiago. We’ve laid out the beautiful road trip inside along with the review. Sticking to the travel motif and the fast trending adventure motorcycling scene is the purpose built Mahindra Mojo. Competing head on with the Himalayan, check out our test ride to see if the Mojo lives up to the five year time gap that it took to come from concept to being production ready. We even had the chance to talk to Karma, an avid motorcyclist who has several stories about his exciting road trips. Read more about it and his auto-obsession in our ‘My Autolife’ section. Another exciting product on review is the Honda Navi, one of the funkiest two wheelers in town. And representing the opposite side of the spectrum we have the sensible Hero I Smart 110. We have a heavy issue on our hands, one that we had a lot of fun making. Have fun going through our reviews and adventures. Until next time. Cheers!

2017 KTM DUKE 200 & 250 DETAILS REVEALED KTM has revealed the details of the upcoming 200 Duke along with the 250 Duke which is available in some international markets. Both these models draw heavy inspirations from the KTM 1290 SuperDuke. However, both models miss out the split headlamps as seen on the new 390 Duke. The new KTM 250 Duke is powered by a 249cc single-cylinder, water-cooled, 4-stroke engine which makes 31 bhp of maximum power along with a peak torque output of 24 Nm while power is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed gearbox. The 250 Duke also gets the new exhaust system and slipper clutch. However, it misses out on ride-by-wire technology and the new TFT display. Stoppage power comes through 300 mm front disc with 4-piston caliper along with 230 mm rear disc with 2-piston caliper from Bybre. Similarly, a dual channel 9M Bosch ABS system is standard. The fuel tank can now store 13.4 litre of fuel. Like the 250 Duke, the upcoming KTM 200 Duke will share most of its styling cues with its bigger siblings. It will be powered by a 199.5 cc single-cylinder engine that is expected to develop 24.6 bhp. KTM has already started testing the new 200 Duke on Indian roads. Expect the bike to launch in the second quarter of 2017.

HYUNDAI INDIA ROLLS OUT 7 MILLIONTH CAR A white Hyundai Creta Automatic had the distinction of creating history in the Hyundai world by being the 7 millionth car, rolled off the production lines at Hyundai Motor India’s state of the art facility in Sriperumpudur near Chennai, India. With this, Hyundai Motors India achieved the distinction of being the second best position amongst its overseas peers, only after China, in Hyundai Motor Group and the first auto manufacturer, in India to achieve this feat in a record time within 18 years of commercial operation, proving once again that HMI can cross the 1 million mile stone, at an average of every 18 months. HMIL rolled out its first million car, a Santro, in 2006 just 8 years after commencement of commercial production in 1998. Thereafter, production picked up momentum, with the next million milestone being achieved within an average of 18 -19 months. The 5 millionth car was flagged off in October 2013 by Hyundai’s brand ambassador Shahrukh Khan. HMIL has held the top exporter position consistently for 12 years since 2004 with a volume of 24,64,723 to date, while being instrumental in making Chennai port vibrant. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

OWNER’S REVIEW

I used to own a Tata Movus before getting the Safari Storme. The Movus was a good SUV, however, after the production stopped in the Indian market, I had no options but upgrade to another SUV. It was during the same time, I was invited to Tata Motors Nepal Car Mela where the Safari Storme grabbed my attention. I immediately made a decision to upgrade to the Storme since Sipradi also provided amazing valuation for the Movus. The exterior of the Storme is appealing with its striking looks and well-built architecture. On the inside, the Storme is equally spacious and comfortable. The Safari Storme is wellknown for its off-road prowess. I have driven the safari to quite a few places outside the valley and I am planning to do a road-trip soon.

Prem Prasad Baral Retired Government Official

What makes the Storme distinct from other SUVs are its excellent handling, easy manoeuvrability and brilliant performance. The SUV provides a great ride quality. The suspension system provides a smooth ride without much hindrance and the tires feel well-planted on the roads. As with the aftersales service, I am very much satisfied with Sipradi. I am impressed with Sipradi’s extensive service centres throughout the country. To conclude, I would definitely recommend the Safari Storme to anyone looking to buy a new SUV.

TRUTH BE TOLD, THE MOJO HAS BEEN IN THE MAKING FOR 5 YEARS

F

Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul. As clichéd and overused as the saying may be there is some truth to it. We’re not taking anything away from cars though, there is plenty of fun to be had in them if you use them properly; but there is good reason to why the idea of chasing the horizon on a motorcycle has captivated so many people. Explaining this feeling to someone who has never ridden a motorcycle except for the sole purpose to get from point A to B is difficult, explaining it to those who have isn’t necessary. Nevertheless, adventure motorcycling has had a strong following the world over. Not ones to fall behind, Nepal has had its share of passionate riders; Madhav Sharma set out to on a world tour on his Honda CG 125 in 1997. Through all obstacles, a broken foot and legal constraints and more, Madhav made it to Europe and back. It is an inspirational story for any motorcyclist, but the fact that he had to do it on a tiny 125cc engine sheds light on the dearth of touring motorcycles in the market. The good news is the adventure motorcycle trend is catching on in our part of the world. Royal Enfield got the ball rolling with The Himalayan which we had the chance to test out last month, and there is another offering from Mahindra that fills in the same gap: The Mahindra Mojo. Truth be told, the Mojo has been in the making for 5 years; that’s how long it took for it to go from a concept to a production model. With half a decade of Mahindra’s engineering efforts, the Mojo is here to represent the automobile makers in the adventure touring frontier.

AUTOLIFE DECEMBER 2016 29

MAHINDRA HAVE EMPHASIZED ON THE FACT THAT THE MAHINDRA MOJO IS A SPORTS-TOURER AND IT LIVES UP TO THE CLAIMS.

STYLING AND FEATURES

The Mahindra Mojo is an acquired visual taste for many, it’s like the bitterness of coffee that you begin to like and love only after some time. But for some it’s just a bitter beverage that doesn’t fall under their consideration set at all. At our office, this discussion led to an all out debate and we had to wind things up before things got too heated. One thing we could all agree on was that the Mojo was distinctive. The Mahindra Mojo gets bug-eyed twin headlamp with DRLs sitting on top with a short visor extending above it. A, how do we put it… ‘rib like chassis segment’ (twin pipes) flow under a massive chiseled fuel tank, that still belies its 21 liter capacity. The forks, chassis and swingarms get a golden color that stood out from the black color of the Mojo we were testing. Move along to the side and you notice the massive front disc, the beefy upside down forks with a triple clamp for added rigidity and the radiator shrouds with silver fins. The back end tapers to a narrower design with LED tail lamps in the rear. What get the attention of many will be the twin exhausts (despite being a single cylinder unit), Pirelli Diablo Rossi II tyres and 320mm front discs that are the largest in the segment. The Mahindra Mojo employs a semidigital instrument console with a plethora of details on tap. It also records the top speed achieved by the motorcycle. Actually, there’s plenty of gizmos on the Mojo that justifies their five years of fiddling. They have the roll-over sensor, which will cut off the fuel supply if it detects a sudden change in the bike’s angle to drastic levels

30

AUTOLIFE DECEMBER 2016

and rear wheel lift in case of a crash. There’s also a limp home mode which limits the engine speed to a maximum of 5000 RPM, in case any sort of malfunction happens on the bike. The fit and finish quality is also of top quality.

PERFORMANCE

Mahindra have emphasized on the fact that the Mahindra Mojo is a sports-tourer and it lives up to the claims. The 292cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine makes a maximum power of 27bhp at 8,000rpm, and a maximum torque of 3kgm at 5,500rpm. It has a refined engine that doesn’t feel jumpy but rather exerts a linear rate of power through the rev ranges, pulling with vigor after 3000rpm. You’ll get to triple digits briskly and won’t complain if you decide to cruise at the speeds. You won’t complain either, on account of the plush and comfortable seating and riding position that the Mojo offers. But considering the lack of road space and road conditions you’re better off taking it easy at 80-90kmph. Taking into account the fact that it falls on the heavier side of the spectrum it feels incredibly agile once it gets moving. Thanks to the amazing Pirelli rubbers the machine feels extremely well planted

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

and stable through the straights and corners. The massive upside down forks up front and monoshock unit in the back did a good job of absorbing road undulations and providing sublime ride quality. Stopping power is one of the best in the segment too attributable to the 320mm petal discs up front and conventional discs on the rear as well; no ABS present though.

VERDICT

Mahindra met with a lot of scrutiny when they revealed the concept Mojo in 2010, but they stuck to their guns and came back five years later with a well refined tourer. And the extra deliberation might have been necessary considering the increasing lucrative nature of the segment. Royal Enfield already has a strong holding and Bajaj are raring to go with their Dominar, which means the Mojo has its work cut out for it. Now, they’ve gone with a quirky design philosophy which is a hit or miss with the public. But what everyone can agree on is its performance and cohesion with the segment requirements. The Mojo is a mile muncher in every sense of the word and for anyone looking to get one for the purpose it’s not far off from the target.

For some 4 months, I had been wanting to get a new car, however, I had no idea what to get. But when I saw an advertisement of the Fiat Punto Pure on a local newspaper during with NADA Auto Show 2016, I did not hesitate. To me, the Punto Pure just looks very gentle and prestigious. I love my Punto Pure from every aspect; especially the high ground clearance with spacious internal cabin. Moreover, I like how most of my friends have been fascinated with it. As far as the exteriors are concerned, it is very eye-catching with its smooth surface, tail lights, the whole design is just awesome. Likewise, the interior are also attractive. I like how the cabin is comfortable and the booth is spacious.

Personally, I view that this car to have been made for the Nepalese roads. Construction work hurdles, grass patches, mud paths, whatever it may be, the Punto Pure easily beats the obstacles and overcomes them. I have taken it on a long drive to the western part of Nepal for about three weeks. Nowhere did I come across a problem, the performance was, and still is, highly praiseworthy. At some points while driving through the hill roads, I felt like I was driving a 4x4. Now talking about the aftersales service, the Fiat showroom always has a friendly air. Service is good, nothing is to be said against it. As far as my view is concerned, I am proud to be the owner of Fiat Punto Pure. Apart from being the best family car, it is suited for every sort of professional. In comparison to other cars of similar range, Punto Pure is always a step ahead in my honest opinion.

MY AUTOLIFE WITH

KARMA

G

Getting on a motorcycle and heading out to kiss the horizon is what dreams are made of, at least for some of us. Karma has been an avid motorcyclist from the moment he got his hands on his father’s motorcycle, and unlike most families his was very supportive of the hobby. That led to several memorable experiences on motorcycles that Karma shared with us in this interview after his epic road trip to the beautiful Rara Lake in Mugu. Here are the excerpts of our interview with the actor and motorcycle enthusiast, Karma. 36

AUTOLIFE DECEMBER 2016

WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN RIDING AND MOTORCYCLES? It started with a kid’s penchant for bicycles. I took my grandfather’s classic buda cycle anywhere I could, even before I could reach the pedals; thanks to the old scissor technique. Soon after, my father bought me a small BMX bicycle. I think that’s where it all started. Luckily, both my father and my grandfather were also interested in bikes and cars and they owned several motorcycles during their time. This was before authorized dealerships started in Nepal, they were the ones who initially brought the first Hondas and Suzukis into Nepal. They were proper fanatics, so much so that some of my father’s friends recognized him as ‘Honda’ a nickname he acquired. So my fascination in motorcycles was always bound to happen. I first learned to ride a bike on an old Honda CG 125.

Later, my father sometimes let me ride his motorcycles on our occasional roadtrips to Pokhara. All of these experiences and moments culminated to my liking towards two wheelers. WE KNOW YOU OWNED A SUZUKI DR 200, WAS THAT YOUR FIRST MOTORCYCLE? I got the DR around 2010 as I was already involved in a few movies and I wanted a nice bike and I got it. But the first motorcycle that I could really call mine was the Hero Splendor. And I have so many memories on it. This was back when I just completed my SLC or somewhere around that time. I didn’t have a driving license yet but that didn’t stop me and a few friends from heading out to Pokhara. I’m not proud of it but it was memorable; we ended up stranded there due to a nationwide strike. There was some police bribing involved, not something I think is a good idea to go into detail in. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

PHOTOS : KARMA

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

IT’S GREAT THAT YOU GO ON AS MANY ROADTRIPS AS YOUR SCHEDULE ALLOWS. ANY FUN STORIES YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? Several. After I got the DR I and a few friends rode to Pokhara. Late into the night someone brought up the idea of maybe going to Muktinath since we were already there to which we all agreed. My motorcycle was purpose built for the terrain, my friends weren’t that lucky. But it was an adventure that was worth every bit.

THERE ARE DIFFERENT REASONS FOR PEOPLE TO RIDE, WHAT’S YOURS? Riding has a different thrill and nothing else can compare. It is the epitome of freedom, you have the liberty to travel under your own command and enjoy every bit of it. You can just go with the flow; you may come across new places. In some ways it is a spiritual release which helps me focus about the things around me and after each bike ride I have found peace within myself. It is beyond words to me.

There was another ride toSwarga Dwari where I got the short end of the stick and ended up at the end of the pack. The roads were treacherous and it got dark fast, and to add to it it started raining. The muddy tracks gave way and I had to stick as close to the wall as possible to avoid the cliff on the other side. I took a wrong turn and had to turn back a long way to find my friends. Now that I look back at it it was a lot of fun, but at the moment I was sort of petrified.

CONGRATULATIONS ON PURCHASING THE RE HIMALAYAN AND SUCCESSFULLY TAKING IT TO THE RARA LAKE. HOW WAS IT? It was always a dream for me to go there on my motorcycle and it was as good as I had hoped. There were more people who were supposed to go, but like most plans almost everyone backed out. I was determined to go and Nikun (Shrestha) agreed to come along. The best decision I’ve ever made.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT TRAVELLING FOR YOU? I love travelling, any kind and as an actor I get to travel a lot and I get to see new places, meet new people and explore amazing places. Not only just meeting people and seeing faces, I like to know more about the places, the history that surrounds it and the culture and the language and the stories of the people there.

The experience was simply sublime. But I suggest people to get a suitable bike for going off road, if you don’t own an off road motorcycle I recommend you hire one because it adds to the entire experience. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN YOUR GARAGE? A BMW GS, for sure. My ultimate dream is to ride around the world, at least Asia. I’d love to see myself doing that on a GS. AUTOLIFE DECEMBER 2016 37

AUTOLIFE INTERVIEW

THE GREAT REBUILD

JUNIE

BY RAAJIB SAYAMI P H O T O S

P R I TA M

C H H T R I

In the world of building motorcycles, Raajib Sayami is the torchbearer for Nepal. While some people drool over the newest and shiniest motorcycles Raajib breathes life into the souls of forgotten machines sculpting them into works of art. We caught up with the man himself to find out more about his latest build, the strikingly beautiful Junie.

The project of RS Moto Workshop, which is run by me (Raajib) and my helping hand Laalu, circulates around the idea of rebuilding and -designing old motorcycles. Facing the law with its rules and regulations, summarised the criminalisation of our approach, we continue to work on these treasures, which came to Nepal back in the days. Without us, those motorcycles would not be interesting and valuable for anybody due to taxes and accessibility to spare parts in our country. Due to legal issues we do not sell the refurbished motorcycles or custom them on demand for people. All in all, we do not consider building bikes a crime and, though it is illegal, we continue our project. Not only because of the fascination for motorcycles, but also the idea of bringing people with a common passion together. Junie, a Honda CB 450, found her way to Nepal in 1969 and was used to escort governmental officials. After being exchanged and sold to a friend of mine, she ended up in my hands. As we cannot import used motorcycles to Nepal, hunting, finding and buying old bikes is a quite entertaining passion. For bringing Junie and me together, I dedicate this work to my friend, who initially bought her. I have been always hunting old bikes and two of in total four CB 450 within Nepal are part of my collection. By the time the project of RS Moto Workshop was ready to go, I was not sure, on which bike I wanted to work first. In the end and without any big thoughts I started to work on my friend’s CB 450. It began with taking Junie into my container and doing it the brat style. She had been without

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

shelter and exposed to all weather conditions for years without a carburetor and a spark plug, so the engine was full of water and most parts suffered large areas of rust. The first stage of this project started with rebuilding the engine. Due to the problematic accessibility of spare parts in Nepal, everything had to be imported. After giving orders online, I sanded down the frame, cut the rear end and weld the rear loop. I painted the frame afterwards and it was ready, when the spare parts for the engine arrived. Building the engine was a crazy experience. While trying to figure out the right timing on DOHC, piston hit the valve. Again, as I could not find a spare substitute, I had to place an order again. At the same time I found out, that the head cams were worn out, so I could deal with it in one fell swoop. This created the perfect time to clean up the engine case and buff it. The front suspension was completely gone and, again, I could not find any 35mm fork tubes, so I got a pair of SR 400 from Thailand and made them fitting in the existing bottom fork. Additionally, I lowered the whole thing three inches to give it my preferred look. Also I laced a new 2.15 and 2.50 size wheels in an original CB 450 hubs and used Firestone ANS military tyre. When I received finally all the missing parts, I could finish the engine without any further complications and fixed it on the frame with a new Mikuni carburetor. Sadly, the bike did not fire up, as I had hoped. So, after another round of fixing the electric issues, Junie fired, running on dyna ignition coil with stock points. While sanding the tank another idea popped up in my mind: I painted the part with different layers

of varnish, sanded it again and put a clear coat on top. As I have seen my wife Sara working with typography, I decided to ask a common friend of us, Ujala Shrestha, due to Sara’s absence to work on it. I have been always tempted by the experiment of a wooden seat, as it is culturally considered holy around Nepal to sit on a wooden plank. I got Canadian maple, which is used for skateboards, pasted as many layers as needed, gave it a suitable shape fitting Junie and asked a local artisan to engrave the logo of RS Moto. As the bike was taking a proper shape, I needed to locate a battery. For this, I wanted to use a wooden box, made out of same Canadian maple we already used for the seat and brace the box with copper. In the last step, I installed Ducati Monster 696 handlebars with biltwell grips, dime city cycles perch and levers. I wanted this part to look very clean, so I relocated the headlight switch under the tank, as there was no space for it on the lamp, which came from a local car shop. And, finally, I used old Volkswagen ignition keys to start the bike and Junie came to life after a long time: The engine fires up properly, the carburetor is tuned, brakes are working and the sitting position feels perfect for me. Eventually, I test rode the bike. What a great satisfaction finally. Now, after finishing the technical part, I need to plan something to take my Junie for a long trip - without any cop hassle. For what I can say now, around town and for quick rides this motorcycle feels simply awesome. And in the end, playing hide and seek with our beloved traffic police is always a fun game riding this motorcycle.

Part minibike, part scooter, the Navi has been the most talked about two-wheeler this year. A quick glance at the Navi and you might understand from where the family genes came in. It holds a striking resembles to the eccentric Honda Grom – Honda’s little 125cc pocket rocket that has wowed riders all over the globe with a serious fun factor packed into a simple, lightweight design. With the convenience of a scooter and stance of a motorcycle, the Honda Navi is a surprisingly offbeat approach by Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India. Disrupting the monotony of conventional looking scooters, the Navi is 100% developed by Honda R&D India from concept development to commercial production. We rode the Navi at Whoopee Land Amusement Park in Chobhar, a break from the usual test locations. Here are our first impressions of this petite stunner

STYLING

Okay, the Honda Navi isn’t a motorcycle or a scooter, and it feels odd at first but the unorthodox design makes it a real head turner on the road. Almost everything is refreshing and breaks free from the current pool of orthodox scooters. The combination of quirky design elements to create something new is a welcome change in the current scene. The Navi is all about compact proportions. The hexagonal headlamp in a grey housing gives a lot of character to the Navi. The wheels, forks, engine and exhaust have been finished in black. A simple old school analog instrument console reads out the speed and kilometres, and has telltale lights for indicator and headlight high-beam. However, it does miss out on the fuel gauge.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The Navi has been designed with the Honda Activa as the base. It shares almost all of its mechanicals including engine and chassis with the Activa. It gets the Activa’s soul with a slightly increased power output. The 110cc

THE NAVI IS ALL ABOUT COMPACT PROPORTIONS facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE DECEMBER 2016 43

WHAT THIS BIKE LACKS IN POWER AND SPEED, IT MAKES UP FOR WITH NIMBLE AGILITY single cylinder, air-cooled, petrol engine makes 7.8bhp @ 7000rpm while delivering 9Nm @ 5500rpm. It is paired to a V-Matic automatic transmission. The Navi also gets Honda’s intuitive HET (Honda Eco Technology) which aids in more fuel efficiency without decreasing power output.

RIDE AND HANDLING

What this bike lacks in power and speed, it makes up for with nimble agility. The upright riding position centred foot-pegs and raised handlebars and chunky foot pegs give it the motorcyclelike geometry. Although seat height is similar to the Activa, the Navi feels slightly taller because of the wider seat. Should you push the throttle, the Navi is capable enough to reach a top speed of 85 kmph. The instant and linear acceleration is perfect for getting overtaking and sneaking through city riding. The Navi is extremely manoeuvrable and zippy, thanks to its light weight and narrow frame. It is 7 kg lighter than the Activa, which allows a more responsive engine with nimble characteristics. The Navi with its 1286mm wheelbase and

44

AUTOLIFE DECEMBER 2016

sturdy tyres is stable at any speed. It is the best option if you are a city commuter. Given the small size of the Navi, it’s not surprising that it comes built around a frame that has been pared down to the bare minimum. The underbone type construction uses the engine as a stressed member. It runs on 12” front and 10” rear wheels, each equipped with a 130mm drum-type braking unit, and gets tubeless tyres. It gets upside-down telescopic forks at the front and a hydraulic monoshock at the rear. Although the Navi misses out Honda’s Combi-Braking System (CBS), the scooter’s drum brakes at the front and rear do a decent job of bringing it to halt. Besides, its nice to have a storage space enough for utilitarian or customization purposes.

VERDICT

Although the Navi’s styling may not be to everyone’s liking, it’s a straight up fantastic scooter. Its fun factor is off the charts and it probably will put smile on people’s faces than just about anything currently in the local market. At Rs 1, 54,900, the ebullient Honda Navi does lives up to its hype.

If you’re an off-road enthusiast, then surely this has to be top of your list? Just look at it! Inspired by the factory CRF450 Rally machine raced in the Dakar by Team HRC, and based on the standard CRF250L, the CRF250L Rally is a pure Dakar Madness. At the front, the rally-type “floating” screen, fairing and radiator shrouds provide wind protection, with the rest of the machine showing off minimal MX style. The asymmetric headlights are LED, as are the turn signals. A large fuel tank allows extensive range, and the new digital dash includes a fuel gauge and tachometer. Long-travel suspension and high ground clearance enhance its long-distance off-road ability, and a larger floating front disc—plus ABS that can be switched off for the rear brake—delivers stopping power. Owner’s Review Ever since the Skoda Rapid was launched, I found it to be very elegant and classy. The sedan had an aura of premiumness and the feel of driving it was superb. I felt that the car was a real value for money in the mid-sedan segment. The powerful engine, the smoothness of the ride, buttery steering and the 55 liter fuel tank makes the Rapid the best-in-segment sedan. I love how Skoda’s signature grill and the raised bonnet create a wide V shape, giving the car a real solid look. The Rapid looks like a sleek business car. The dual tone of the dash board, quality materials and comfortable seats with ample of legroom take the cake for me. The gearbox and steering are very smooth, which helps to easily navigate through the traffic. The suspension too is very good, but the ground clearance does raise some concern while driving on rough roads. I took the car to BP highway as well as some other highways of ours. The turns were taken with ease and the Rapid has the capacity to reach high speeds

I am extremely satisfied with Skoda’s aftersales service. I am busy with my work mostly. So their SMS alerts for timely servicing is very convenient. They even take in feedbacks from each visits. I am very satisfied with my Skoda Rapid. It has given me the joy of driving. I have received many complements on it, mostly from friends who admire its sporty yet classy looks. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a mid-sedan.

THE

FANTASTICO ROAD TRIP

TATA TIAGO We’ve had an ongoing love affair with cars and open roads. To be honest, there are very few things that hold as much appeal as the classic road trip that takes us away from the city. Needless to say, we take every opportunity that comes our way. The idea of soaring through the tarmac and leaving work behind is always a welcome change; especially when leaving work behind to go on road trips is part of the job. Yes, life is pretty much perfect. As life would have it, such an opportunity did come by when the good folks from Sipradi Trading Pvt. Ltd Tata Motors offered us an opportunity to take their newest offering, the Tiago, out on a spin. This was around the time half the population of the Capital headed towards Mustang and flooded social media with their journeys. We had something different in mind. This is the journey that took five best friends all the way to the culturally diverse city of Janakpur in a trip of a life time where friendships were renewed and stronger bonds were built. And we did it all in the new Tata Tiago. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

AUTOLIFE DECEMBER 2016 51

THE TIAGO COULD COMFORTABLY SEAT ALL FIVE OF US WITH ROOM TO SPARE FOR SOME UKULELE PLAYING AS WELL.

THE DEPARTURE There is always someone on a road trip who ends up completely ruining the schedule, and our group was not any different. Waiting on someone outside their home isn’t the best way to start an epic road trip, but that’s how things unfolded for us. And sure as a gun he received an earful for his tardiness. Brushing aside the delay, we set out to our destination for the day: Bardibas in Mahottari District. If everything was to go according to plan we would reach Bardibas by 6pm in the evening. So we had packed all of our stuff and put it into the boot which was more than capable of accommodating our entire luggage. In fact, for what looks like a pretty compact hatchback the Tiago could comfortably seat all five of us with room to spare for some ukulele playing as well. THE JOURNEY TO BARDIBAS Once we got rolling it seemed like we had passed Dhulikhel and were cruising through the BP Highway in no time. With the weather in its best in months the entire mountain range was clearly visible making for a scenic vista for the drive. The sun was shining bright and the smooth tarmac made for a cushy ride on the Tiago. We remember saying the Zest was the best offering that Tata Motors had of yet, but the way the Tiago was performing it seemed well on its way to dethrone its sibling. Powering the hatchback through the straights and turns was Tata’s renowned

Revtron 1.2L petrol engine. While the Zest and Bolt received the same engine, they ran on 4 cylinders while the Tiago ran on 3, making it more responsive and fun to drive. What we were really looking forward to was the drive through the twists and turns of the BP Highway that would lead us to Sindhuli. A driving haven for car and motorcycle enthusiasts all over Nepal, the hairpin bends and scenic beauty was just what the zippy Tiago needed to come to life. The handling is fun too and the steering feels well weighed even at triple digit speeds. This hatchback remains stable at high speeds and body roll is very well contained. The sunburst orange of the Tiago stood out perfectly on the tarmac and we couldn’t help but admire how good it looked. Its distinctive style comes from its large swept back headlamps and oversize mesh-type grille on the front face. It is one of the best designs to come from Tata and definitely one of the best amongst competition. And there are many interesting design elements and that further get highlighted once you step inside the cabin. Equipped with Harman™ infotainment system, we made sure our playlists kept the drive fun and preppy. For lunch we stopped at a roadside eatery where we refueled with a hearty roadtripper’s lunch: daal, bhaat and masu. And lots of it. It has become a sort of tradition for us at AutoLife to make sure we eat enough food to get us noticed by bystanders. We’re not quite sure how that habit stuck on but 3 additional

helpings per person and more than 6 servings of fried potato crisps later the job was done. On the flip side, we then had to practically roll over to the Tiago without hinting towards the fact that we had over eaten, which we most definitely had. Again, we’re not sure why we’re like this. We don’t stop eating when we’re full, we stop eating when we get noticed. Proud and well fed, we realized we were falling behind schedule. The photography stops lasted a little longer than we had planned, but to be honest this was expected. Luckily, we weren’t really in much of a hurry. Before long the sun was starting to set and a few hours later, our lunch had finally settled down. Which meant it was time for a tea break. We needed a short respite and the cozy setting of the road side

tea house seemed like the perfect place to relax. The friendly people there served us some terrific tea and omelet as we watched the last rays of sunlight disappear from the skies to be replaced by the shimmering stars. AT BARDIBAS It had been 2 hours since we stopped caring about our planned schedule. It was completely dark by the time the lights of Bardibas appeared far in the horizon. The number of houses increased and the busy junction at Mahottari signaled that we had finally arrived at our rest point for the day. We checked into a nice place that went by the name of Pawan Mithila Hotel. After the long day of driving we were famished, despite the colossal lunch. At this point we would like to explain another one of our quirks. Our theory dictates, the food served

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

at a hotel is inversely proportional to the niceties of its lodging facilities; shabbier the place the more authentic and flavorful the food and vice versa. Applying that theory we were pretty much expecting a clean, posh and boring dinner at the swanky marble floored hotel. But we were pleasantly surprised to be served one of the best thakali sets we had ever had. Guess that theory went to the gutter fast. After guzzling down our food, mandatory second and third helpings included, we headed to bed with plans to head off straight to Janakpur early next morning so that we could explore the city… AND THE BANDH …. However, the next morning, a nationwide bandh was put into effect. That pretty much halted our progress and it looked like we had to spend another day at Bardibas. Sadly, it wasn’t the most exciting place to be in after you’d been there for more than 3 hours. But because there was a bandh we decided to make the most of it by exploring. We left the Tiago at the hotel and headed to Ratu Bridge which was approximately two kilometers away on the popular electric ‘city safari’ vehicles. A walk through the jungle and splash by the river later we decided to head back. The bandh would be over by 5pm and we were going to head out to Janakpur that very night. We walked back to our hotel and put our packed luggage into the trunk and headed off to Janakpur. On the way we stopped to take a few photographs and we had the misfortune of meeting some unfriendly locals. Drunk and groggy, they decided it was a good idea to slander us with names which we felt were strictly reserved for the purpose of identifying their mothers. Understanding that they were already operating at full capacity by stringing words into sentences AND putting one foot in facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

ALTHOUGH WE DON’T IDENTIFY AS A SPIRITUAL AND RELIGIOUS GROUP, THIS WAS A QUIET MOMENT THAT REALLY HELPED US GET IN TOUCH WITH A VERY DIFFERENT SIDE OF OURSELVES.

front of the other at the same time we tried to get things under control. We politely explained to them that we were from the media and were only doing our job. Adamant to avoid a tiff in the middle of the road we ultimately had to show them our Press Cards before they left us at peace and went about their daily routine of, what we presume, is sifting through cow manure. Long story short, despite the bandh and inebriated drunk divers we managed to reach Janakpur at night in high spirits. THE JANAKI MANDIR As soon as we arrived at Janakpur we checked into the nearest hotel and parked the Tiago to go out in search for a place to have dinner. We didn’t even unpack because we also wanted to visit the beautiful Janaki Mandir; to do that we took a ‘city safari’ again and asked the man at the wheels to take us there. The day hadn’t involved too much of driving but the incident with the unruly locals had brought along some negativity. However, once we reached the Janaki Mandir, things looked up. The beautiful palace, dedicated to goddess Sita, is one of those places that have a way of putting you at peace. All five of us took in the liberating spiritual vibes of the beautiful temple and contemplated our own personal thoughts. Although we don’t identify as a spiritual and religious group, this was a quiet moment that really helped us get in touch with a very different side of ourselves. MOSQUITOES, FAULTY AIR CONDITIONING AND UNEXPLAINED ODORS After an hour or so at the Janaki Mandir we went to have dinner at a nearby restaurant that was considered the best my many locals. The restaurant was called Nawarang and the food

surpassed our expectations. It is definitely a place we recommend. However, the trip was going to take a turn for the worse. Comparing the hotel at Bardibas with the one that we stayed in at Janakpur would be like comparing a mutton ghosh biryani at the Hyderabad House with a poorly prepared plate of cold chicken fried rice at a generic café. The beds were extremely uncomfortable, and the air conditioner was not working. There was a pungent odor in our room that remained unexplained and the mosquitoes were relentless. But we were pretty tired and didn’t see a point in looking for another hotel at 10:00pm in the night. And we suffered. THE JOURNEY BACK HOME Having mosquitoes buzz into your ears the entire time is a terrible way to spend the night. Unsurprisingly, the mood of the group was quite sour. It was apparent that we needed a hearty breakfast to brighten up the mood. Off we went on our Tiago to go in search of some local breakfast that would hit the right spot. After a brief search we found a local purely vegetarian sweet shop that also served breakfast. Referring to our theory of the relation of food to infrastructure, the scruffy interiors and rickety wooden stools looked promising. And we were not disappointed. We stuffed our faces with a towering pile of puri, tarkari, daal fry and some of the best julebis we ever had. Yes, we had oil dripping down our wrists and there were ants crawling over the sweets

on display but the breakfast was out of this world. And we needed a heavy breakfast because we would be heading all the way back to Kathmandu that very day. It’s a good thing the Tiago is such a comfortable car to travel in. Sure it is a little snug for five people who love to eat as much as we do but we’d like to think that it helped us strengthen our bonds. On the way back we hit the same spots for food. We had a quick tea break at the same roadside tea house and let our breakfast settle in. For lunch we chose the same restaurant where we had lunch the day before. Let’s just say the people at the restaurant were very happy to see us. All in all it was a splendid road trip that really helped us escape the daily grind. Furthermore, the trip proved that you don’t have to follow everyone else to have a good time. There might be very few people who would go to Janakpur without any religious intentions, but we were amongst the minority and we are certain we made a good decision. But more importantly we got to do it in what we believe is Tata’s best offering yet: the fantastic Tiago. Sure there are things that you could niggle over about its performance on the highways but there are so many strong points that outweigh the cons. A road trip isn’t perfect without a good vehicle to drive in, but lucky for us, this trip was pretty perfect.

A ROAD TRIP ISN’T PERFECT WITHOUT A GOOD VEHICLE TO DRIVE IN, BUT LUCKY FOR US, THIS TRIP WAS PRETTY PERFECT.

NATIONAL STUNT BATTLE 2016

There are two types of people in the world: those who like the smell of flowers and pancakes in the morning and those who like to wake up to the smell of burning tyre and fossil fuel. It’s one of those things that you can’t really explain; but the ones who relate to the latter will understand why we were so hyped for the ‘TVS Apache Series RTR National Stunt Battle 2016.’ The National Stunt Battle 2016 was a platform for these certain few and boy, was it an experience to watch them do what they do best. STUNTS! Particularly, we were very impressed to see women taking part in this with their wheels spinning and feeding the men behind them their dust. The event was organized by Nepal Motorcycle Federation Club (NMFC) while Nepal Culture & Adventure Events (NCAE) managed the event. NMFC has an excellent reputation for successfully conducting motorcycle sporting events like Racemandu and Crossmandu in the past and this event being managed by NCA Events was also a mega hit. The event was supported by National Sports Council and Nepal Automobiles’ Association (NASA).

The main attraction of the event was the show put up by Milan Thapa and Siddharth Rana (stunters from India). They thrilled the crowd with a variety of stunts from drifts, burnouts, and stoppies to different variant of wheelies which were performed on TVS Apache RTR 200 and TVS Wego. COMMUTER CLASS HERO SPLENDOR ISMART 110

WORDS AND PHOTO : AL TEAM LOCATION: MECONOPSIS BOUTIQUE HOTEL, PULCHOWK

AUTOLIFE DECEMBER 2016

facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

THE SPLENDOR ISMART 110 IS A STYLISH AFFAIR AS COMPARED TO OTHER MOTORCYCLES IN THE SEGMENT.

T

The ‘Splendor’ nametag needs no introduction. For most of the commuter class, the legendary title made a solid case for itself with its solid reliability, sturdy reliability and excellent sales figures. Riding on sustained customer demand, the Splendor family became Hero Honda’s bread and butter for over 2 decades. With the Splendor, the company also consistently raised the bar and created new records. However, after the fallout with Honda, Hero MotoCorp faced an uphill task to develop new products on its own. Last year, the company launched two all-new scooters, which were developed in-house – the Maestro Edge and Duet. Now, meet the Splendor iSmart 110 – the company’s first indigenously developed motorcycle from its Centre for Innovation and Technology in Jaipur, India.

STYLING

The Splendor iSmart 110 is a stylish affair as compared to other motorcycles in the segment. Adding to the style quotient are dual-tone colour schemes, stylish split grab rail, 5-spoke black alloy wheels, blacked out engine, new tail-light, muffler with chrome tip, and dual tone mirrors, fenders and cowl. Also, the attractive Analogue Digital instrumentation console makes a bold statement with a digital odometer and tripmeter, analogue fuel gauge, speedometer, and a side-stand warning indicator in a blue backlight display.

FEATURES

The Splendor iSmart 110 is the most feature loaded motorcycle in the segment. First, it is being offered with Hero’s i3s (Idle-stopsmart system), a technology which automatically switches off the engine when idle for 5-6 seconds in neutral position and switches it on as soon as the clutch is pressed. The i3s system is an important convenience feature in the urban stop-go traffic conditions. It also helps in reducing fuel consumption while increasing the efficiency of facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

the engine. This technology, akin to cars, makes Splendor iSmart the first ever mass-segment twowheeler in India to receive such a technology. The second first-in-class feature being offered is the Automatic Headlamp On (AHO) feature which automatically turns on the headlight when you start the bike and stays on till you shut the engine off. The AHO feature will be seen on every two wheeler as an additional safety feature rolling out from Indian manufacturers starting from 2017.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The motorcycle features a completely new 110cc, air-cooled, single cylinder, 4-stroke engine which produces a maximum power output of 9.2 Bhp @ 7500 rpm and maximum torque of 9 Nm @ 5500 rpm. The engine is no longer horizontal; the position has been made more vertical. The engine is linked to a 4-speed gearbox. The engine is BS-IV (emission norms set up by the Indian government) compliant and claimed fuel efficiency is 68Km/l.

engine offers usable power and an evenly distributed torque across the range. The peppy engine provides enough confidence to the rider to cruise at higher speeds even in 3rd and 4th gears. Hero claims that the Splendor iSmart races to 60kmph from standstill in 7.45 seconds. Once you are astride the bike, the seating position is upright and comfortable. The iSmart 110 is a comfortable bike to ride in the city. The well-padded long seat and light dimensions make the iSmart a comfortable bike to ride in the city. The new tubular double cradle frame offers enhanced agility and conformable riding experience, even on rough terrains. The suspension setup is softer with telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers at front and adjustable hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear. Similarly, the increased ground clearance of 165mm allows for convenient and easy riding on our roads. The 130mm drum brakes at the front and 110 mm drums at the rear do a decent job of bringing the iSmart to a halt.

VERDICT

If you’re looking at a motorcycle to get you from point A to point B in an effortless manner, then look no further than the iSmart 110. At Rs 1, 66,000, it is a value for money proposition and does everything a commuter motorcycle is supposed to without any drama. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

KTM ORANGE TOUR MISSION MUSTANG PHOTOS PROVIDED BY: KTM NEPAL

Riding up through the unforgiving terrains of Lo-manthang and conquering the Forbidden Kingdom has tantalized motorcyclists and been quiet high on most people’s bucket list. However, most of us usually imagine tearing through the dirt on a purpose built off roader, not a crotch rocket made for tarmacs. But that is exactly what the KTM folks have done in their KTM Orange Tour- Mission Mustang. And they did it riding their Dukes and RCs. Talk about massive cohunes. 74

An event organized by Hansraj Hulaschand & Co. Pvt. Ltd came to an end after all riders and crew members reached the destination of Lo-Manthang. During the tour both riders and bikes were put to the test to accomplish the mission against the rugged and harsh conditions of Upper Mustang. Lots of questions were raised before the event; like “Will the models like RC make it through to such a rugged destination?” Both the riders and the bikes replied to the question in style and bold attitude after successfully completing the tour. As per KTM Nepal this tour reflects the durability and reliability of both its models DUKE and RC. The 6 day Orange Tour began from KTM Showroom Pokhara after the technical brief required for the ride. Here’s how it went down: Day 1: ride was planned to Tatopani as their first stop of Mission Mustang. The Orange Army reached Tatopani in the evening, and after a short time in the hotel all the riders went to the natural hot water spring. Later everyone took their dinner and went to bed. Day 2:The ride planned aimed to reach Jomsom from Tatopani. Every rider took their lunch and the Ride-Marshall briefed them regarding the terrain, riding style and techniques and mentioning the tough route through Ghasa. There was a short drink break before reaching Jomsom. In the evening the tour-party reached Jomsom and checked in to the hotel. All riders enjoyed the scenic beauty of Jomsom and later took dinner and went to take a much needed rest. Day 3: Next stop was Samar. After lunch the riders were gathered and briefed about the techniques while driving on the route above. After all the riders geared up they were ready to hit the road. Riders rode their bikes very well after Chaile. All the team members stopped for a drink break and rest for an hour to adapt to the environment. Day 4: On day 4 the trip was from Samar to Lo-Manthang with the toughest challenge for the crew and the riders to cope with the icy waterfall – the crew had estimated 3 hours to overcome it but with the effort of 43 riders and crew members, it was accomplished within 1 hr, passing the difficult way in style! With a refreshing break and minor service helps, all riders reached Lo-Manthang cheering “Mission accomplished!” All riders and the entire team were filled with joy after reaching Lo-Manthang where they celebrated the accomplishment. Day 5: On day 5 the service team did the regular checkups on all bikes to ensure their good condition. While this was being facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

done the riders did some sightseeing and a photo session. The locals were excited due to the presence of the event and on behalf of all Lo-Manthang people, every rider and crew were honored with Khatas. There was a short briefing regarding the riding tips for downhill driving, and the ride moved on towards Jomsom. The riders were full of joy and rode their bikes so well that despite the late start, all riders reached Jomsom at the estimated time of 6pm. Day 6: On day 6 the ride was planned from Jomsom to Pokhara. The ride took off after eating at 11am and reached Pokhara at 7pm. There was a small after-party at the hotel in Pokhara. Mission Mustang was a great experience for the riders, who came from different corners of Nepal. Mission Mustang ended with the promise of more thrilling and adventurous tours in the years to follow.

ANMOL KC: 390 DUKE, POKHARA Mission Mustang was one of the most difficult missions set by the KTM family, an off-road trip with 23 bikers. The experience I had on this tour was amazing and the way all the rider were ushered to Lo-Manthang by the marshals, medical team and service team was very satisfying. As being one of the toughest roads in Nepal, the mission wasn’t easy. But all the effort from everyone made it fun. Being on top was an amazing experience and being surrounded by the natural beauty made it even more spectacular. All the riders and crew members on the tour were so friendly that I never felt I was away from home. I experienced one of the best group-rides. I must say that I have found a new family; the KTM family. The bike performance on the off road was absolutely fantastic and mileage of the bike was also very good, given the conditions of the off-road. The way to Lo-Manthang is one of the toughest road but the excellency was never reduce. The bike was as comfortable as it was on the regular pitched roads and it handled all the obstacles with ease. While ascending, I experienced the mighty pick-up of the bike when the oxygen levels were very low. While descending, facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

the ABS brakes were very efficient to not tip the bike over nor slip. The tyres had a very good grip and tight hold on the difficult road. The main thing was the handling of the bike. I experienced one of the greatest rides of my life and was blown away by the performance of the bike. PARISKIT SHUBBA: DUKE 200, BIRTAMODE First of all I want to thank KTM for giving me a chance to participate in Mission Mustang: Orange Tour. I always wanted to go to remote places and among those places, one was Mustang. Without KTM, maybe it would not have been easy for me to visit Mustang. I participated in the Orange Tour from Jhapa .It was a long journey but it was full of excitement. Mustang is a very wonderful place with lots of natural beauty and is an ideal destination for those who love to travel. Some places of Mustang are full of ice and some are full of mud. The tour to Mustang would have been impossible without teamwork and the exceptional performance of KTM bikes. I am thankful to the Ride Marshals and the service team of KTM. It was a wonderful journey. During this tour, I made lot of new friends and I hope KTM will continue to bring this type of programs in the future as well. AUTOLIFE DECEMBER 2016 77

THE BEST OF

EICMA 2016

The EICMA, better known as the Milan Motorcycle Show held at Milan, Italy happens to be the most influential automotive expos on the planet. This year, the show was filled with new bike launches from all sectors of the market. It has been even better than most, with something from almost every major manufacturer prompting enthusiasts to start clearing garage space: full-fledged track demons; neo-retro classics; smaller, lighter, nimbler, go-anywhere ADV bikes. Take a look at some of the best examples of motorcycle craftsmanship which made motorcycle enthusiasts mad this year at Milan.

YAMAHA T7 TENERE CONCEPT:

The original Ténéré spirit that made Yamaha one of the greatest names in Rally and Adventure riding is now back in the company’s DNA. Now Yamaha has provided the world a glimpse of the future with the unveiling of the T7 Concept at EICMA. Created using the race-bred DNA that has made Yamaha one of the most successful names in the Rally world, the Yamaha T7 Concept is a fully functioning prototype developed to achieve a perfect balance between road and off road capability. SUZUKI GSX-250R:

Suzuki has shored up its entry-level ranks with the release of the 2017 GSX-R250 at EICMA. The new Suzuki GSX-250R truly does justice to the GSX name both in terms of styling and proportions. However, this one is more suited to be a sporty motorcycle that can also be used for commuting rather than just being a trackfocused bike. The new GSX-250R is powered by a 249cc twin-cylinder engine tuned to churn out a decent 24.7bhp at 8000rpm and 23.3Nm of torque at 6500rpm and comes mated to a 6-speed transmission. The bike gets 17-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels that are shod in IRC tyres (110/80 17 front, 140/55 17 rear), along with KYB suspension front and rear. The bike also comes with petal discs for both front and rear wheels with an ABS system from Bosch.

These three new models form part of Husqvarna’s exciting new range of ‘Real Street’ motorcycles. The Vitpilen 401 is a refreshingly simple and progressive urban street motorcycle that provides a new gateway into the motorcycling culture for a wider range of riders. Recognised and globally awarded for its unique design the motorcycle features a technologically advanced single-cylinder 375 cc engine that is housed in a stripped down but progressive layout. Offering excellent performance the bike appeals to an entirely new generation of riders looking for an honest and highly accessible machine. Forming part of Husqvarna’s ‘Real Street’ bike range, the Svartpilen 401 is a modern day interpretation of a street explorer. Featuring a bold and rugged appearance, the Svartpilen 401 offers a more upright riding position thanks to its wider motocross-styled bars. Drawing inspiration from the brand’s iconic past, the Vitpilen 401 Aero is a compact single-cylinder ‘Real Street’ concept motorcycle that ideally depicts Husqvarna’s interpretation of how a faired bike should look like.

BMW G 310 GS:

2017 KTM 390 DUKE:

The new 390 has been treated to significant attention for the new model year, benefitting from visual updates that bring it closer to the Super Duke, to engineering updates that now includes ride-by-wire technology. The 390 Duke now features a TFT instrument panel, standard ABS, LED split headlamp and all-new bodywork. The exhaust is a side mounted one on the new 390 Duke while the outgoing model has an underbelly exhaust. The 373cc engine of this pocket rocket also gets some updates to meet Euro 4 emission regulations, and a new catalytic converter has added to the weight of the bike, which now tips the scales at 149kg. Power is rated at 44bhp, and the updated KTM Duke 390 gets marginally more range with a 13.4-litre fuel tank.

The BMW G 310 GS can be identified as a genuine GS at first sight. With its characteristic, high front fender, striking flyline and short, high rear, the BMW G 310 GS features classic elements of its big GS sibling models. Its compact proportions with a short wheelbase, a 19-inch front wheel and extended spring travel make for a typical upright posture, promising an agile, nimble riding response. Like the G 310 R, the G 310 GS is also designed for the world market. It takes diverse fuel qualities as well as meeting all emissions standards and local requirements. It is at home on all the roads of the world, bringing the hallmark BMW premium aspirations to the segment below 500 cc. The new GS features much of the same technologies and hardware, including a 313cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine that produces a claimed 34 hp and features a backwardtilted cylinder and cylinder head rotated by 180 degrees. This configuration lends itself to a lower center of gravity and gets more weight toward the front wheel. Rolling stock includes a19-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear that are wrapped in 110/80 R-19 and 150/70 R-17 rubber, respectively. Brakes include a four-piston caliper up front biting on a 300mm disc, and dual-piston caliper out back on a 240mm disc. ABS is standard, but can be switched off for off-road riding.

HONDA CRF 250L RALLY:

Honda has unveiled the much anticipated adventurefocused model CRF250L Rally. With styling DNA drawn directly from the HRC CRF450 RALLY Dakar racer, the Honda CRF250 RALLY brings something new to the market. Based on the updated CRF250L 2017, the bike has long-travel suspension, large-disk ABS brakes, excellent weather protection and an impressive cruising range. The new Honda CRF250L Rally adds a wide range of changes to the standard CRF250L that makes it a unique proposition for riders. At the front, the rallytype “floating” screen, fairing and radiator shrouds provide wind protection, with the rest of the machine showing off minimal MX style. The CRF250 RALLY’s 250cc liquid-cooled singlecylinder DOHC engine delivers a peak power of 24.2 bhp is delivered @ 8500rpm with peak torque of 22.6Nm arriving @ 6750rpm. The engine boasts solid bottom-end torque coupled with substantial top-end power, thanks to updates from the original CRF250L including revised PGM-FI and throttle body, a new airbox and a lightweight exhaust.

DUCATI:

The Ducati Scrambler range was extended with two new bikes. The first is the Ducati Scrambler Cafe Racer, an interpretation of the legendary ‘60s bikes that triggered a motorcycling revolution. With 17’’ wheels and “racer” handlebars, the bike has also been given a complete rear-end re-design in pure Cafe Racer style. The second exciting addition is the Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled. Thanks to the modified frame and suspension, the spoked wheels (19” at the front) and alluring, ground-breaking lines, this bike is simply perfect for those who want to be able to get off the asphalt and take a less-beaten track. The off-road capability of the Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled is also evident in the typeapproved headlight mesh guard, the off-road style footpegs with removable rubber pads, the high mudguards (specially designed for this version) and, of course, the engine skid plate. With the 1299 Superleggera, Ducati takes road sport bikes to unprecedented levels: it’s the first road bike to feature carbon fibre frame, swingarm, subframe and wheels. It’s a concentrate of engineering, technology and performance - something which until now has never been implemented on a factory-produced model by a motorcycle manufacturer - in a limited edition of just 500 bikes. And underneath that carbon fibre skin lies the highest-performing version of the Superquadro. Thanks to its 215 hp, the desmodromic engine on the 1299 Superleggera is the most powerful factory twin-cylinder ever built.
