EDITORIAL
THE PRE NADA ISSUE We Nepalese have a thing for SUVs. There’s just something about them that turns our heads when they cruise down the street. We here at Autolife have been turning our heads for as long as we can remember, but when we saw the Peugeot 2008, we thought that I’d be a good idea to get an insurance for our necks. We’re just sad that the test drive lasted for only a short while. Our hands can still feel the steering wheel. The Peugeot was nice and pleasing, but what really made our hearts beat was the Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin. And by beat, we mean about-to-self-destruct. It was a machine that took off like a jet and put the expression “head over heels” into real perspective. While reaching this paragraph, we just realized that our hearts have not received a single beat for a break. Why? Because the NADA Auto Show is just around the corner. In anticipation for it, we put together a feature highlighting the highlights of last year’s NADA, and things you should be looking forward to this year. We hope you are just as excited as we are. How you have a nice one.

Cheers! CORRIGENDUM: Oopsie... looks like we made an error. We seemed to have mistyped the name of one of the partners on Helmets Nepal as Sajal Pradhan in the article The Story of Helmets Nepal in the July/August 2017 issue of Autolife Magazine. It should have been Sajal Joshi. The people responsible for the error have been duly punished by locking them in a room and playing “Selfie Maine Le Lia” on continuous loop for 3 hours straight.

DUAL PURPOSE MOTORCYCLES AND ADVENTURE MOTORCYCLES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN MY THING, AND TRAVELING THE WORLD ON A CAPABLE TWO WHEELER WILL BE RIGHT ON THE TOP OF MY BUCKET LIST.
M
Motorcycles are a part of who I am, and always will be. Like many children growing up in a middle class family, I grew up straddling the tank of a commuter motorcycle. The wind on my face and my small hands gripping the rearview mirror bars for dear life, it probably wasn’t the safest means of transportation but by golly it was the best. And so it began, my love affair with motorcycles. It was years before I could reach the foot pegs properly, but only a few months thereafter before I toppled it over for the first time. There were plenty of firsts that followed and I fell more and more in love with motorcycles. However, apart from the commuter motorcycles, sightings of higher displacement motorcycles were few and far in between. Young motorcycle enthusiasts, like me, had to make do with the Suzuki GSX 750s that were part of the police fleet escorting carcades. And maybe a few Triumphs or BSAs from time to time. Long story short, the best we could do was flick through magazines and fantasize about how we’d spend hours riding these beauties (still talking about motorcycles here). With time, every kid developed a liking towards a particular school of thought when it comes to motorcycles. The majority loved the full-faired sports styling, some divulged into naked sports and some into cruiser styled motorcycles. To each their own, but for me, it was always dual purpose motorcycles. Ever since I first laid eyes on the Honda XL 125 I was hooked, not just because it looked badass but also because it made sense with its purpose. Depending on your capabilities, you could take it anywhere you pleased and you wouldn’t be bound within tarmacked roads. And it’s stuck with me ever since. I dreamt about owning one for myself for 15 years and ended up getting myself the Honda XR250 Tornado, and I love it to bits. Dual purpose motorcycles and adventure motorcycles have always been my thing, and traveling the world on a capable two wheeler will be right on the top of my bucket list.

Which is why I hope you will understand why I was so excited about getting my hands on this beauty. What we have with us is an adventure motorcycle that holds a lineage that dominated the Paris-Dakar Rally in the late 1980s. A motorcycle that holds its grounds against any other adventure tourer out there, and a beast that has the potential to conquer the world on two wheels; it goes by the name of CRF1000L. However, it is better recognized as the Africa Twin. We here at AutoLife just call it the BIG RED.
STYLING
As the name we’ve given implies, the CRF1000L Africa Twin is a big motorcycle. However, in a global ADV market that has big-bore touring machines that are large and heavy it is considerably on the smaller side of the spectrum. The flagship bikes from BMW, Ducati, KTM, Triumph, and Yamaha all displace around 1,200cc, and most have claimed weights closer to 275 kgs (except for the 225-kg--dry KTM), Honda has opted for a 999cc twin and hit a measured dry weight of 220kgs. It is comparatively smaller in its class, but it is still a towering

THE HONDA CRF 1000L AFRICA TWIN IS A PROPER ADVENTURE TOURER, AND IT HOLDS UP ITS END OF THE BARGAIN DESPITE LACKING A CLUTCH AND MANUAL GEARSHIFTS.
beast amongst motorcycles. While I understand the adventure motorcycle styling may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there is no denying that Big Red is a beautiful motorcycle. Twin headlights sit under a tall windscreen much in adventure style. A massive tank, that holds 18.8 liters of fuel, gives the front-end bulk while things taper to slimmer dimensions toward the rear. A bash plate undertakes the protection duties of the underbody. If we haven’t mentioned it already, the Africa Twin we had with us used dual clutch transmission. The parallel twin engine with dual-clutch transmission is immediately obvious because the engine case sticks out slightly further, and there’s no clutch lever. Instead there is a parking brake in its place, tucked away behind the handguards.
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
There are plenty of buttons and switches on the handle bars and instrument console to customize your riding style. The all-digital dash displays speed and revs clearly in the top section with a lower section showing gear position, traction control, temperature, fuel gauge, trip meters and kmpl. On either side of the dash are warning lights to indicate if the traction control has been activated.
RIDE AND HANDLING
You get an option of standard sixspeed manual gearbox, or Honda’s exclusive automatic six-speed DualClutch Transmission (DCT); we had with us the latter. The Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin is a proper adventure tourer, and it holds up its end of the bargain despite lacking a clutch and manual gearshifts. It is absurd how quickly people put it down for this. Honda’s goal with the Africa Twin is to offer a bike that is easy to ride anywhere. As far as I can tell, the DCT is certainly an awesome feature that – once you get used to it – makes the riding experience a bit
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
AUTOLIFE AUG/SEPT 2017 31
more... simple. It takes the mundane task of shifting out of the equation and allows you to enjoy the ride, soak up the scenery, and focus on the road ahead. It is pretty simple to ride. Shift into D (Drive), accelerate and you’re off. Gearshifts are definitely earlier than you would like but it provides adequate power for smooth riding. You will not be able to hold revs as well as you’d like but you can work around that. You have 3 sports modes you can toggle through with a push of a button that will give you more than enough punch on the tarmac. If that still doesn’t satisfy you, you have the option of switching to manual shifts via buttons you can access easily with your left forefinger and thumb. The suspension is on the soft side so the 45mm Showa fork compresses into the stroke, but it soaks up the weight of the bike without wallowing or acting funny in corners. The brakes are decent, too, with a pair of four-piston calipers and big 310mm dual discs that are more than up to task on the street or dirt. The Africa Twin’s claim to fame is its capability off-road and now we know why. Take it off the beaten path and it finds its groove. But it is still a pretty big bike and you can forget about manhandling it on the dirt. If you try to blast through rough trails you will eventually get out of shape and risk a crash. The 3-stage traction control is not only effective, but it’s simple to use. Using level one the bike spins up and it will hold a slide, but will ultimately intervene to keep the rear wheel in check so that you don’t have to. Level two is more intrusive, while level three constantly interrupts the power in loose conditions, but still finds any available grip and keeps you moving. In its standard position, seat height is 34.3 inches, but it can be lowered to 33.5 by

simply sliding the saddle into different mounting slots. The tall tapered handlebar provides good comfort on road and is also well positioned for standing when riding off highway. Fitted with one of the most comfortable seats my rear end has had the good fortune of resting on, all day rides are simply a must with the Africa Twin. The bike has a narrow waist which positions the rider down in the bike instead of perched on top of it. For enduro riding this is a boon and will help you maneuver the machine in a way that is deceptive of its size.
VERDICT
I’ve been aching to ride a proper adventure motorcycle for ages and my prayers were finally answered. And man the Africa Twin brought the biggest smile across my face. While it may not be the most capable big tourer in the world, I think it is the perfect one to start things off in Nepal. There are bigger caliber machines like the BMW 1200GS and the KTM 1190, and there are smaller offerings like the Triumph 800 Tiger, but the 999cc parallel twin engine could be the perfect middle ground offering that provides the best of both worlds. Regardless, Big Red is the best and only option in Nepal that can potentially fulfill my, and maybe your, dream of traveling the world in.

THIS COMPACT SUV PARTAKES IN ONE OF THE MOST COMPETITIVE SEGMENTS IN THE AUTO INDUSTRY, ONE THAT HAS SEEN A LOT OF NEW ENTRANTS IN RECENT YEARS.

Let’s try and set things off on the right foot here, it’s pronounced ““per-zhow”; at least that’s as close as we could get. The often-mispronounced French automobile brand has been a sort of enigma in the Nepalese market. Most people know that it’s a European brand that has an unorthodox style, but that’s about it. Previously distributed by Kishore Gears Pvt. Ltd, the duties have now been undertaken by Shangrila Motors Pvt. Ltd., which is where we found ourselves stepping into the Peugeot 2008. It’s only the second time we have had the chance to get behind the wheels of the Peugeot and this gave us a chance to unravel the enigma of the French brand. This compact SUV partakes in one of the most competitive segments in the auto industry, one that has seen a lot of new entrants in recent years. The Peugeot 2008 will be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Kia Soul, Ford Eco Sport, Suzuki Vitara and the Hyundai Creta. Clearly, competition is tough. Here, we find out what it has to offer and how it stacks up to competition.

EXTERIOR
The stylings of Peugeot has been a hit or miss in our opinion. Better put, it’s a love it or hate it affair. Previously, we tested the Peugeot RCZ and that was a proper cracker. Low slung and designed with plenty of curves it fit the bill as the closest thing to a sports car in Nepal. In our opinion, the Peugeot 2008 has also hit the nail on the head in terms of style and design. What grabs your attention right from the get go is the black chrome grille that houses an embossed AUTOLIFE AUG/SEPT 2017 41
pendant design that surrounds the central Peugeot lion badge. Flanking the vertically integrated radiator grille are two-tone black and chrome headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights. Projector lights are installed as well onto the bumper. The profile is pretty much simple. It features a black cladding through the bases and underbody with diamond cut 16’’ Aquila Alloy Wheels. Silver roof rails accentuate the sporty design of the compact SUV. Move onto the rear and you’ll see the tailgate is framed by full LED rear light clusters with a 3D ‘claw’ design. This trademark design has become an integral part of Peugeot’s style identity.
INTERIOR
Step into the compact SUV and it is an exquisite affair with the finest finish. The ergonomics are designed to enhance your focus and attention on the road and provide better safety. You do get a tall driving position

but the steering wheel was a little too small for our liking. However, this is a purposeful design function where the steering wheel sits lower than a traditional design and means that your arms are both lower and closer together. This not only reduces driver fatigue but offers more precise steering and improved maneuverability. Maybe it’s a European thing and we’re too mediocre to appreciate it, but we do prefer a little chunkiness to the steering wheel, regardless of safety and lack of fatigue. Keeping the safety of the driver and passengers in mind, the head-up instrument panel allows driver information to be viewed above, rather than through, the steering wheel and is therefore accessed without taking your eyes off the road. There is plenty of glass for light to come into the cabin. If you need an added bit of freedom, you can choose to unveil the panoramic moon-roof for a few of the clear blue sky. Chic and innovative, the head-up instrument
panel features LED dial surrounds which come on automatically as soon as the side lights are switched on. In terms of space, we could have done with a little more head room for tall drivers but overall the Peugeot 2008 provides decent space. You can fit five people easily for a nice drive. The boot has a low loading height of 60cm and the 1/3-2/3 modular rear seats allow you to convert the boot volume from 410 litres to 1400 litres. Pressing the button at the top of the backrest is enough to tilt the back allowing the seats to fold down automatically into a completely flat floor.
PERFORMANCE
European cars have been known to provide exquisite driving experiences, and the Peugeot 2008 does plenty to uphold the claim. Although we have complained about the steering wheel being too small, we cannot deny the fact that it did help with the fatigue. We had the compact SUV for the entire day but we did not feel tasked at all. facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
EUROPEAN CARS HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO PROVIDE EXQUISITE DRIVING EXPERIENCES, AND THE PEUGEOT 2008 DOES PLENTY TO UPHOLD THE CLAIM.
Powered by a 1.2 litre PureTech petrol engine, the 2008 performed splendidly on the Nepali roads. This 3-cylinder petrol engine technology delivers energetic drive and performance, excellent fuel economy and low CO2 emissions. It’s the result of intelligent, innovative engineering, which combines reduced weight materials with the efficiency of direct fuel injection so you get more performance for less displacement. You get to choose to switch off the eco mode or switch onto sports mode, which makes a lot of difference. Eco mode is generally good and you’re not left struggling for power too desperately; for in city driving it does the job. But the sports mode is just incredible. For a 1.2 litre mill it produces incredible punch. Producing 110 bhp, the Peugeot 2008 also proves to be a capable highway cruiser. Furthermore, the driving experience is sublime. Gear shifts are smooth thanks to the 6-speed petrol automatic gearbox which uses quickshift technology allowing for faster gear

changes. This helps in putting a smile across your face as you drive. Suspension, although responsive, gets a little nervy when tackling larger potholes. However, it provides for a tremendous ride quality. All versions of the 2008 SUV have a high level of active safety and are equipped with ESP (Electronic Stability Control) as standard. This comprises Traction Control (ASR), Stability Control (CDS), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Anti-wheel lock braking system (ABS) and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBFD). The 2008 SUV has an ultra-light body structure designed to absorb as much energy as possible from any impact. This minimizes the consequences for passengers, pedestrians and vehicles. As well as enhancing safety, this robust yet lightweight structure gives you livelier handling, optimized fuel consumption and greater driving pleasure. What’s more, the 2008 SUV includes six airbags as standard. There are two front airbags to protect the head and thorax of the driver and front passenger in the event of a frontal impact, two front side airbags to protect the driver and front passenger in the event of a side impact, and two front and rear curtain airbags to protect the heads of the front and rear occupants.
VERDICT
Peugeot has been a long-standing brand in Nepal, although not as prolific in numbers the name has been well respected. Although this was only our second go on Peugeot it cemented our impression of the French carmakers. The 2008 SUV scores high marks on style, comfort, equipment and safety; however, it is far from a bargain. All this style, comfort and class come at a price, but if you can break open your piggy bank for it you will be well awarded.

Johnny Oommen was recently in the capital during the launch of Tata Motors’ new offering – the Tigor. We had an opportunity to interact with him regarding the same and the overall market scenario of compact sedans. AL: WHAT WERE THE CONSUMER INSIGHTS BEFORE DESIGNING THE TIGOR? JO: What we found out from the customers is that they wanted a car that expressed their individuality something that is an extension of themselves. They wanted to send out a message from the exterior design while making no compromises at all. This is where our philosophy of the IMPACT Design came into play. Like love at first sight, we want you to say “Wow, it’s a really beautiful car” after looking at the Tigor. And even
for. A sedan, a hatchback, or whatever you’re looking for, it has everything – a spacious leg room, a best-in-class bootspace, intelligently designed 24 utility spaces, an infotainment system that you can control with the steering, and so on. What we have found out is that a young individual who is on the look for a new car, they look for a package which is good looking, comfortable, convenient, connectable, and attractively priced. This was the key points we gave to our engineers and after 3 years, this is what we have now. With this car, we believe that the youths will be able to make the statement they want to make. AL: ANY LEARNINGS INCORPORATED FROM ZEST AND TIAGO? JO: Each product we come out with, we like to see it as an evolution over the previous one. That is how we have taken our Product Development Strategy. Tiago is a hatchback, and a Zest is a sedan, we thought these would appeal to a different segment, which too is evolving. The rise of the crossover, as we see it, is not due to a need for it. We believe that as long as what you are offering is up to mark, the customers will consider it, and will eventually make it into their want-list. The people who own a crossover here are people who have gravitated from
AL: WHAT QUALITY CHANGES / ALTERATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE FOR TIGOR IN COMPARISON TO YOUR OTHER RECENT PRODUCTS LIKE ZEST, BOLT, TIAGO AND HEXA? JO: Three years back, we embarked on our World Class Quality program. Our plants and processes have been successful at achieving the highest of this already high standard with every product we come out with, and the Tigor is no different. However, what really sets it apart is the 1.2 Revotron engine throwing 85 PS with the Eco and City multi-drive modes, the touchscreen infotainment system, the unique Styleback design, practical and spacious booth, and the connectivity feature that makes the car the best in the segment. All in all, what we have here is a product with a mission to meet all the unmet needs. AL: HOW WILL THE TIGOR BE POSITIONED AMONG TATA MOTORS’ CURRENT PORTFOLIO OF PVS? WILL THE TIGOR BE POSITIONED IN THE SAME SEGMENT AS THE ZEST? JO: Both will co-exist. In all honesty, the two cars are aimed at different people. For those who are looking for a more conventional and a larger sedan, the Zest is for them. The Tigor will appeal to those who are looking for a smaller and a more stylish car. Now the question of how it will compete with the Zest, it is a hard one to answer. Let’s say that you are considering both the cars, but you will tilt towards the one that accommodates your needs. No one ever wakes up in the morning with a solid notion of buying a sedan, they have 10 sorts of car types to consider. And whatever makes sense to them, the Tigor hopes to be a selectable option. AL: HOW WILL THE TIGOR SURVIVE IN A SEGMENT WHICH IS ALREADY CROWDED? JO: The point here is to make its own segment. If you look at the exterior, there is nothing like it. The segment may be over crowded, but the way to go about it is by finding micro-segments, or pockets, within that segment. In Nepal, there is a low penetration of cars. There is a lot of potential here. People are always looking for new cars with new features and Tigor is meant to provide all of that. That is how we see and we are optimistic.
after some time, we still want you to think about how elegant the back is and how it curves flawlessly into the boot. Our designers and engineers have invested a lot into coming up with the aesthetics of the car. That is how the ‘StyleBack’ was born. Nothing like it exists in the market today, it’s unique, but has all the practicality you seek facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
sedans and hatchbacks. This is what we have learned and hopefully have been successful at pushing the right buttons. AL: WHAT IS THE EXPRESSION BEHIND THE NAME TIGOR? JO: A person who is aggressive in an understated manner.
AL: AND WHAT ARE YOUR FORECASTS FOR THIS FISCAL YEAR? JO: Let’s not talk about numbers, but let’s look at it this way: With the launch of the Zest, we were able to gain leadership in its segment. With the Tigor, we hope to keep that leadership and move even further up. We hope to become a Number 3 player in Nepal. AUTOLIFE AUG/SEPT 2017 47

THERE ARE MAJOR UPGRADES TO THE STYLE AND DESIGN OF THE NEW VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN, AND WE LOVE EVERY BIT OF IT.
Volkswagen is one of the most loved automotive brands in the Nepalese automobile market as well as the global market. The German automakers have always been a popular choice and there is little question to it. Undeniably, the most popular product from the German stable is the Volkswagen Polo, but a close second is the Volkswagen Tiguan. One of the frontrunners in the premium compact SUV segment, the Tiguan has had some very satisfied customers. Maybe because things were so good, Volkswagen did little to alter things with the Tiguan. Aside from the facelift it received in 2011, the German crossover has been on the roads for close to a decade without getting a major overhaul. Until now.
V
Entering its second generation, the Tiguan uses the distinguished MQB architecture (which means front wheel drive is standard), which allowed VW to reduce costs and build the SUV in both short- and longwheelbase versions. And we get a chance to give it a go around.
EXTERIOR
There are major upgrades to the style and design of the new Volkswagen Tiguan, and we love every bit of it. The addition of creases and angles are facebook.com/AutolifeNepal

comfortable ride. Headspace and leg space is good for its class.
A bold bumper and a chrome finished grille houses the Volkswagen logo while LED Headlamps with Daytime Running Lights flank it. The fog lamps and corner lights establish its presence, come day or night. It also gets electrically foldable side mirrors come with sleek turn indicators that can be adjusted from your seat.
Transferring the design trends from the exterior, the inside too gets sharp design language and it’s evident from the air vents and door handles.
The bonnet gets notable creases that run from the inside of the headlights to the windscreen. A bolder crease runs from the outside of the headlights along the shoulder

Inside, it’s a spacious affair and five people can easily fit in for a

The new Tiguan comes with a Panoramic Sunroof lined with LED lights; one of the many firsts in its category. The 3-zone Automatic Climate Control System, allows you to individually control the temperature inside. It includes an Auto-dimming IRVM that eliminates the glare of trailing vehicles from distracting you. The keyless access and the reverse parking camera let you take control by barely doing
much. And the Intelligent Rain Sensor automatically signals the wipers in case it rains. Electronic Stabilisation Programme improves the vehicle’s stability by detecting and reducing any loss of traction. The advanced Anti-lock Braking System, Automatic Headlamp, Hill-hold, Hill Descent Control along with the air bags prove how committed the Tiguan is to the passengers inside the vehicle. Additionally, the Active Hood is positioned for pedestrian safety on the road where in case of a collision; the front bumper sensor signals the rear end of the bonnet to raise ensuring minimum damage.
PERFORMANCE
The 2.0 litre petrol engine is quick off the line. Producing 200bhp@5100rpms the Tiguan is more than adequate for the highways. Even inside the city the driving experience is exquisite. It smoothes over bigger imperfections, such as speed bumps, and the suspension is still firm enough to stop the body bouncing up and down too much along undulating roads. The Tiguan handles
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
more like a conventional hatchback than many of its SUV rivals; it’s genuinely enjoyable to drive. Some may feel the steering is a little too light, but it’s precise, which makes the car easy to place on the road. There isn’t too much body roll through corners, and has plenty of grip. The gear box is smooth and soothing the vast majority of the time, with only the occasional jerk at low speeds. The new Tiguan’s predecessor achieved a fivestar rating in independent Euro NCAP crash testing, with an impressive 96% score for adult occupant safety and 84% for its protection of younger passengers. The new Tiguan is also set to follow in the same footsteps.
“
THE TIGUAN HANDLES MORE LIKE A CONVENTIONAL HATCHBACK THAN MANY OF ITS SUV RIVALS; IT’S GENUINELY ENJOYABLE TO DRIVE.
AUTOLIFE AUG/SEPT 2017 55
VERDICT
With its new upsized design and tech-savvy features, the new Tiguan makes its presence felt. Clear shapes and sharply sculpted lines clearly make the Tiguan visible straight away. This, combined with a wealth of comfortable and convenience equipment, create a pleasurable journey whatever the destination is. Also, the numerous driver assistance systems provide a confident driving experience even in the most challenging driving situations like ours. On road or off-road, the new Tiguan is dynamic, strong and unmistakably Volkswagen.

AL: TELL US BRIEFLY ABOUT CASTROL’S OVERALL SCOPE AND ITS PLACE WITHIN THE NEPALESE MARKET. AR: Castrol is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and marketers of premium lubricating oils, greases, metal working fluids, control fluids and related services in the automotive, marine, industrial and production sectors across the world. It serves consumers in over 140 countries. Castrol couples high quality lubricant engineering with an expert technical support network and supply capability to deliver quality solutions wherever customers need them. At the forefront of pioneering technology with its many global R&D centres, Castrol invests every year in research and development of lubricants. Castrol’s global teams of specialists have a deep understanding of what customers need. Hence, they develop solutions to optimize performance and help improve quality, productivity and the environmental, health and safety profiles of their customers. The brand represents over 100 years’ experience in ‘liquid engineering’ producing advanced lubricants for a wide range of applications. Castrol’s products and services play a critical role in lubricating the global economy through what is mined, made and moved around the world. Castrol was introduced in the Nepalese market more than 4 decades ago and it still has been maintaining its position as a market leader in the automotive lubricant sector since last 2 decades. Initially, Castrol used to be imported to Nepal from UK and then from Singapore, however, currently, all Castrol products come from Dubai, UAE. Since the very beginning till now, Castrol has been deemed as the most trusted lubricant brand in Nepal by the consumers. AL: WHAT IS CASTROL’S SHARE OF THE AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET IN NEPAL? AR: Although there is no exact norm available in Nepal to find out the exact percentage of market share, we have been enjoying and are continuing to
facebook.com/AutolifeNepal
enjoy the no. 1 position in automotive lubricants segment. Castrol provides customers ‘the confidence’ that their vehicle has the best oil inside and ‘the feel’ that Castrol is bringing out the best performance in their vehicle. In addition, Castrol has always tried to maintain the most competitive prices. However, it cannot be denied that with the introduction of several brands of lubricants, the market has become highly competitive. AL: WHAT IS AVAILABLE IN CASTROL’S CURRENT AFTERMARKET PRODUCT LINE AND HOW DO THESE PRODUCTS DIFFER FROM THE COMPETITION? AR: In the automotive sector, Castrol has been focusing in all 4 segments – Motorcycles, Passenger Cars, Commercial Vehicles and specialty products. Castrol Actevo 4T (engineered with acti-bond molecules) in motorcycle, Castrol GTX (engineered with sludge-busters) in passenger cars and Castrol CRB Turbo (engineered with dura-shield boosters) in commercial vehicles segment have been dominating the Nepalese automotive lubricant market. Castrol has always been at the forefront of innovation and technology in the world lubricant industry. Castrol tests their engine oils in the most extreme situations - from rigorous lab and industry testing to the highly competitive world of motorsports, where they have been heavily involved for over 100 years. Castrol always works with customers, engine manufacturers and industry bodies to ensure that they have right lubricants for all the vehicles. This is for the reason that Castrol has been given approval / recommendation by many of the world’s largest and prestigious vehicle manufacturers. AL: WHAT ARE THE MARKETING AND RETAIL STRATEGIES CASTROL HAS ADOPTED TO SUCCEED IN THE NEPALESE MARKET? AR: In Nepal, mostly mechanics and retailers are found to refer the lubricant brands to end-consumers. Hence, we have always made sure that the mechanics and retailers are rightly educated about our products,
their grades, usages and approvals. For this, we have been regularly conducting training seminars and interaction programs across the country. Besides, for excitement, we often run small campaigns for both retailers and mechanics. AL: HOW DO YOU JUDGE YOUR VOLUME GROWTH? IS IT DEPENDENT ON COMMERCIAL VEHICLES OR PASSENGER VEHICLES OR 2-WHEELERS? AR: There has been continuous growth in our sales volume in the past years. However, it cannot be denied that, with OEMs enforcing their customers to use whatever lubricants they recommend during the warranty period, it has affected our sales volume. As we had mentioned above, all the above 3 sectors – Commercial, Passenger and 2-wheelers are equally important in the Nepalese market. However, Commercial and 2-wheelers play a major part in increasing the sales volume. AL: LASTLY, HOW DOES CASTROL KEEP THE END-USER EDUCATED ON THE COMPANY’S PRODUCTS AND THE PROPER WAY TO USE THEM? AR: Automotive magazines, FM advertisements, newspaper advertisements, brochures, posters, direct communications / interactions with the end-users are few methods among others which we use to educate the end-users. Besides, our trainings and seminars also communicates our message to the end-users.

OWNER’S REVIEW
I used to drive a Tata Indica before exchanging it with the 2017 Tiago XZ model. All the features present in the Tiago is praiseworthy. I feel that Tiago is very comfortable to drive, the sound system is amazing and the leg room is spacious. Since I live nearby Jorpati, you can imagine the bumps and potholes in the roads, however, it doesn’t feel bumpy inside the car. It may be because of the high ground clearance and strong spring power. The Bluetooth connection helps to play music and receive phone calls while driving the car and the connection is smooth because the mic is fixed above the drivers’ head. Other features include the intelligently designed utility spaces, adequate boot space, central lock system, power steering and power windows. The Tiago is an amazing value for proposition car and I am fully satisfied with the services provided by the staff at Tata.

Owner’s Review I bought the Skoda Rapid two months back. I chose the Skoda Rapid because it’s the best sedan in the segment. With its powerful performance, safety features and superb handling, I can confidently drive this car. The cabin provides you a better view of the road. The Skoda Rapid has a smooth and sturdy drive. The Skoda Rapid’s high ground clearance in spite of it being a sedan is a blessing on the roads of Kathmandu so you don’t have to worry about deep potholes even during the monsoon season. Moreover, the Skoda Rapid feels luxurious as well.

I am also satisfied with the space Skoda Rapid provides. The exterior is very appealing with its striking sedan looks and well-built architecture. What makes the Skoda Rapid different from other sedans is its easy handling, excellent maneuverability, and satisfying performance. The Rapid provides a great quality ride, the suspension system is well suited for our roads. There are no issues with the power delivery. Regarding the after sales service, I am fully satisfied with the Skoda team. To conclude, Skoda Rapid is a brilliant sedan and I would definitely suggest it to anyone wanting to buy a good looking vehicle.

I booked the Fiat Punto Pure at last year’s NADA Auto Show and got it soon after the show ended. This is my first car. I always like Fiat as a brand and keeping the budget and the roads of Kathmandu in mind I got Punto Pure. Till now I love this car and I’m glad I purchased it. The best part of the Punto Pure is the ground clearance which makes up for a comfortable ride.

Regarding the exteriors, I think the overall look of the car is just fabulous. The design feels very European. It has mature ride and handling capabilities and confidence inspiring brakes. Onto the vehicle handling, I find the suspension doing well at low speeds. Also, the car maintains its balance on higher speeds. It tackles potholes with smooth ease. I can definitely say that Fiat Punto Pure lives up to its reputation. All in all I find this vehicle to be an excellent choice for our roads. The car is very reliable, fuel efficient and fun to drive vehicle, just the right blend to appeal to a Nepalese mindset. In addition to the car’s design and performance, the customer’s service provided by Fiat is equally promising. The employees are very helpful and experienced in the marketing department and as well as the after sales department. I would definitely recommend Fiat Punto Pure to my friends, family and colleagues. All in all, it’s a great value for money car.

ITALJET CLASSIC 125 Some go for looks, some for performance, some for comfort, some safety; but everyone looks for the value of the product they’re investing in. But what if there is something that packages all of that into one scooter? This is where the Italjet Classic 125 comes in. Pushing out 8.8 horsepower with 9.2 Nm of torque, the Classic 125 is the thing you need for Kathmandu, or wherever you choose to take it. Italjet claims that it has the best performance in its class segment all over Nepal. The Classic 125 is equipped with disc brakes on both the tyres, which are pretty wide, 120/70-12 at the front, 130/70-12 at the rear. The bumps of the road are your slave since the scooter comes with a telescopic suspension at the front and a hydraulic monoshock at the back. Like the tyres, the

seat is nice and wide, and soft for comfort. If that’s not enough to put you at ease, the scooter has a large 7.2 liters fuel tank, so you can pretty much go anywhere in a single fill. The price is set at NPR 270,000/- including a free classic helmet. And, hold your breath for this one, Italjet gives a lifetime worth of servicing (are you holding your breath?!) FOR FREE! This is a great gesture from Italjet since the fuel costs are skyrocketing and the road conditions make it a fortune for maintenance. This extends for all Italjet products, adding value to something that’s already high in it.
