interview by Aaron Andrews
Sons of Magdalene different kind of project than your orchestral tape loops. Why did you release Move to Pain under this name? Josh Eustis : Well, it didn’t really sound like Telefon Tel Aviv to me… at least, it sounded a bit too dark, maybe. As well, I found it difficult and a bit improper to try to make a TTA record without Charlie.
Telefon Tel Aviv began in New Orleans with two friends, Josh Eustis and Charles Cooper, who in 1999 put together a demo they sent off to one of their musical influences, producer John Hughes III. Hughes signed the pair to his Hefty label, and that demo also found its way to Trent Reznor who invited Telefon Tel Aviv to contribute to Nine Inch Nails’ remix album, Things Falling Apart. In 2001 their first of three studio albums, Fahrenheit Fair Enough, was released on Hefty, followed by Map of What’s Effortless in 2004. Their third album was the most critically acclaimed and Immolate Yourself appeared on many best of 2009 lists.
Move to Pain is emotionally loaded with the loss of both your father and your musical partner Charlie Cooper. Has the publicity and press work for this album been difficult for you? Why have you decided to do it instead of just quietly releasing the work? JE : Yes, actually, it’s been pretty nasty. I think the worst of it was finishing the record, but answering these kinds of questions hasn’t been particularly fun and it’s fucked with my headspace a fair bit. I regret the decision to do press, in all honesty.
Around the same time as the release of Immolate Yourself, Josh Eustis found out about his father’s bladder cancer diagnosis and began writing songs that he sent on to Charlie Cooper. These were intended to be the next TTA material, but the sudden passing of Cooper stopped all that. Shortly after the loss of his partner, Eustis lost his father to cancer. These songs were added to and worked on intermittently for another year, completing a first draft that was left to sit for a few years as Eustis worked on other projects. The urging of friends and a desire to move past this chapter in his life got Josh to revisit and finish the work for release under the moniker Sons of Magdalene, which had been an outlet for his solo work before. Josh spoke with us about the circumstances of the album Move to Pain, its writing, his future plans and his time with Nine Inch Nails and Puscifer, among other things.
I see a fair amount of press sheets for music, but noticed this one was a bit different, consisting of a letter from you describing the circumstances of your life and loss and the completion of the work. Why do it this way as opposed to the typical third party write up? JE : Because honestly how the fuck is a third party going to really understand what the hell this record is about or what I went through to make it? As the kids say, “seems legit.”
This isn’t the first time you’ve used the Sons of Magdalene name, but this is a
When I was putting together the timeline of events from Immolate Yourself

:WUMPSCUT: Rudy Ratzinger reveals how he sins. Rudy Ratzinger, who is :Wumpscut:, was inescapably present in electro-industrial through the 90s, and releases an album a year. He doesn’t plan to stop, “next one will be released on Easter 2015, as usual.” One way he keeps up the pace is by not stopping to plot things out, allowing visuals, themes, and ideas to arise organically and present themselves to each listener on an individual and subjective level. When asked about such aspects of his 2014 album, Bulwark Bazooka, he says, “listen to the tracks and find your personal answer, I don’t make plans while creating music.” That means we can only guess what the next album will be about. As for the possibility of collaborating with vocalist Aleta Welling again, as he did on this newest album, the answer is, “yes, once in a while.”
How much has anger influenced your life and music? RR : Music a lot, but only subconscious. Not life in general. What is one thing you find yourself being jealous of? RR : Not much/nothing to mention. What are you the most proud of? RR : I am no proud person at all, probably because I never saw life as a challenge.
What is your greatest desire? Rudy Ratzinger : Music and movies, and girls with large noses. What is your favorite food and fondest memory of it? RR : Pizza, good bread (come to Germany and find out), and Wiener Schnitzel. What is your most prized possession? RR : Cars (at times).
What keeps you diligent at creating? RR : The idea to present the audience something new and spectacular.
What is one thing you put off doing the most? RR : Playing live.
