Celebrating Culture and Diversity in Avalon Park

cultures that make up our community. This event has always been a favorite one for me.

As an immigrant who came to America from Switzerland almost 30 years ago, and I am deeply thankful for all the opportunities this land of the free continues to give me.

Over the years I have truly became a “global citizen.” I am writing this column on a flight from Zurich, Switzerland to Bangkok, Thailand, where I will connect to Taipei, Taiwan. From there, a quick visit to our offices in Osaka, Japan and then come back to the US next week via San Francisco, hence traveling around the world in a little over a week!

Our diversity is not just visible when I travel the world. When asked what the strength of Avalon Park Group “APG” is, I always say our diversity and internationality. Even back in Orlando, a typical day will start with picking up 2 coffees from Karen at Marketplace (she was born in South Korea). One of the coffees is for Marybel, APG‘s CFO and my co-captain, she is Dominican / Lebanese and was born and

But then there are Orlando natives like Nicole or Trey on APG ‘s team, or Stephanie from the Kansas heartland. And sitting just a few yards away from Andreas in the Switzerland office is Ravi, who is from Malaysia, but spends his time living and working between Singapore and Switzerland.

I truly believe once people from all over the world live, learn, work and play together great things can be accomplished. Different cultures bring different knowledge, ideas, and experience. Almost every political, business, and personal problem is the result of weak or noncommunication. Once people from all over the world have the ability to meet colleagues with vastly different backgrounds and work together, the benefits from each other’s knowledge and strengths help “global problems” get solved much easier.

Immigrants made the US the greatest county in the world. They left their home country and came to the promised land. Many became very successful in culture, art or business. By leaving their native land, they demonstrated risk tolerance and adventurism.

It is getting dark as my plane leaves the Turkey air zone, approaching Iraq, then Iran and via Pakistan, India. I will land in Bangkok early in the morning local time, late in the night Switzerland time.

My journey will bring me together with people from all over the world, and it is deeply refreshing, and I always learn a lot from other cultures.

This is why I love the celebration of the diversity in our community in events like Absolutely Avalon. I hope to see you all there next month, where we can share our experiences together!

Happy March!

March is Woman’s History Month! This month is an opportunity to celebrate the resilience and strength of women, and to highlight the challenges they have overcome. March 8th is International’s Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is also a reminder to celebrate the strength, courage, and determination of the incredible women in our lives. This day has been observed since the early 1900s and has since become a global movement to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.

On Thursday March 9th, the Orange County History Center will be hosting the Fourth Annual Women’s History Breakfast. This event will take place at the History Center (65 E Central Blvd) from 8am to 10am. The event will include a short documentary film honoring historic Orlando architects Ida Annah Ryan and Isabel Roberts. Tickets are available at https://www. thehistorycenter.org/event/womenshistory-month-breakfast-4/. I encourage anyone interested to attend this

informative event on the 9th.

The Orange County Charter Review Commission has begun meeting. This board is composed of fifteen citizens from Orange County appointed by Commissioners and the Mayor. The board is tasked with researching different policy topics and voting to put charter amendments for the general election ballot in 2024. I urge anyone interested in this process to watch the meetings live on Orange TV or participate in person at the Orange County Administration Building in Downtown.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to receive my newsletter, you can email me at district4@ocfl.net or call my office at 407836-5881. You can also meet me in person at one of my two satellite office locations. On the first Wednesdays of the month you can meet me at the East Orange Community Center (12050 E Colonial Dr) or on the Third Wednesdays of the month at the Meadow Woods Recreation Center (1751 Rhode Island Woods Cir). My time at both locations is from 10am to 12pm. Thank you again!

Salads

Salads have been a staple for an easy and healthy lunch for a long time. It’s always fun to experiment and try new ingredients together to see what works well. Usually, it’s easy to start with a protein and build around that. Whether it’s chicken, shrimp, tofu or you just want a greens and grain salad, anything will be good in it. After deciding what salad you want to do, pick a dressing that goes well with your creation. Lemon based or oil and vinegar vinaigrettes are always a must! Add some seasoning and you got yourself a delicious salad!

Sandwiches

Sandwiches come in many forms: the tradition-

A fresh and fruity smoothie can be a lifesaver, but it also has the chance of becoming a sugar-filled drink. It’s important to stay away from processed ingredients and to focus on fresh produce and vegetables.

Instead of adding oat or almond milk - which are high in sugar - go for plant-based milks like soy milk or Greek yogurt! Protein powder can also work as well with the smoothie base. Kale, beets, and spinach are excellent veggies to add in. When it comes to fruits, make sure you’re putting 1-2 servings of fruit for any smoothie. Fresh fruits are the best way to go, you want to avoid using fruit juice of any kind.

Here’s a list of smoothies to get you started!

There are many other options for healthy, delicious spring meals, but these are just some ideas to get you started! Here in Avalon Park, we have the perfect setting for springtime vibes, as well as an accommodating living space for your needs.

Spring Up Your Health at Encore

As the spring season approaches us, we see the flowers bloom and warmer weather. Seniors are excited to leave the cold weather behind and enjoy this season to the fullest. Spring is also time for a reset and keeping your health up.

To help your loved ones enjoy the beautiful weather and keep active, here are a few springtime activities for seniors.

Finding Healthy Recipes

Keep up with what foods are in season for the best tasting meals. With spring comes lighter, healthy foods like asparagus, peas and strawberries. First thing is to cut back on red meats and processed foods. Instead, substitute those for vegetables, whole-grains and produce.

Ensuring your overall diet is healthy can prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes and arthritis. Make sure you know what your loved one can and can’t have when planning what to make.

Celebrate the Holidays with Family Spring is filled with many holidays and celebrations for you and your loved ones to get together. Whether it be Easter, Passover, Holi, St. Patrick’s Day or Cinco de Mayo, each is a perfect opportunity to host a family gathering. Make a delicious meal or celebrate the holiday accordingly with everyone for a day to remember.

Enjoying the Outdoors

With the cold weather being left behind, spring brings warmer weather and sunnier days to our lives. Just taking a walk each day around the community will continue to keep seniors active and give them just enough exercise for the day. Sitting outside to breathe in fresh air and listening to the birds chirp can reduce stress and relax the body.

Although being in the sun and boosting your Vita-

min-D levels is important, it’s smart to make sure your loved one is putting on sunscreen to protect against damaging their skin. To avoid such things like skin cancer and sunburns, it’s recommended seniors wear 30 SPF or more and avoid going outside between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

Spring Cleaning

Spring reset also means cleaning out clutter that has been built up over the years. Your loved one may have items that are taking up space where they live and helping them clear out some things will give them more room.

Some items to declutter are clothes no longer worn, broken items, old papers and books, appliances that are no longer in use and junk found in different drawers. While looking through everything, you may come across old pictures that you and your loved one reminisce about. Any task can create a special moment between family members.

Springtime at Encore in Avalon Park

At Encore at Avalon Park, we understand how important it is for our seniors to have access to plenty of fun and engaging activities. That is why we host many different recreational and social activities for the seniors at our assisted living community to enjoy on a daily basis.

We also provide our senior residents with healthy, delicious meals and comfortable accommodations to make them feel at home. That’s why Encore at Avalon Park is Central Florida’s premiere senior living solution.

Other features outlined historical clothing and a diorama of the Harlem Renaissance, which was a time of creativity in art, music, writing and dance in the black community of Harlem in the 1920’s and 1930’s. These are just a few examples of the many talented representations of important milestones in history. Additionally, over 20 students submitted their work to be juried by local artists and 5 were selected to be featured through the month of March at ACC. Everything to Know About Being an Entrepreneur

Launching a business requires a lot of work and thought into the process. Bringing in funds and loyal customers may not materialize at first, but through perseverance and motivation, progress will be made. Each year, people form their ideas into a business and take the risk. These businesses range from tech startups to new services. With the right inspiration and game plan, you can take on being an entrepreneur too.

This week is National Entrepreneurship Week, where we celebrate the success of many business ideas and owners. Let’s take a look into what being an entrepreneur is and how you can become one yourself.

Everything to Know About Being an Entrepreneur

What is an entrepreneur?

An entrepreneur is an individual who creates and grows their own business through their ideas. They identify a need in their community and craft a business idea to make a solution. To become one, you first have to find the right idea. Although it should be something that’ll be profitable, you want to make sure you’re also passionate about your idea.

Entrepreneurs do everything from determining clientele to networking to spread the word about their business. Having the right mindset, skills and ideas will help launch your business.

How to become a successful entrepreneur

In order to become successful and make this process worthwhile, you need to know your purpose. Have a clear vision of what you want and go for it. Having the ability to set your own goals, run their business how they see fit and be their own bosses are vital qualities to be successful.

Being a successful entrepreneur also means being a good leader. Leadership is the ability to bring people

to a place where they want to follow you, not feel like they are forced to follow you. This takes investing in your team personally. You are at the forefront of the business and having a supportive team behind you can make all the difference in the world.

Starting up your business is one of the biggest challenges in entrepreneurship. Finding a place for your business and all the necessities can be difficult. Luckily, there’s a solution to make the process a bit easier. The 5th Floor gives you the ability and resources for a startup business.

Startup your business at The 5th Floor

WORK

A Meeting of Minds: Co-Working Event Spaces

One of the main challenges for co-working spaces has always been the fact that desks, chairs, and printers are all things that can be acquired and installed at home. Given the resources and a spare room, any freelancer can set up a home office with comforts and amenities on par with any co-working space. It is a question The 5th Floor has thought about deeply throughout our years of operation. What can we offer our clients that they can’t get themselves? The answer: Community.

This belief has motivated us to prioritize event spaces in every one of our co-working offices, from Muttenz, to Puerto Rico, to Orlando, and even Kuala Lumpur. We are not the only ones - look at the business model of any co-working space across the globe and you’ll see that event spaces are becoming more and more central to their revenue stream.

While co-working spaces are mostly thought of as the domain of solitary freelancers, The 5th Floor understands that our clients come to us for human connection and spaces to gather. Ask any of our customers about why they decided to subscribe to our service, and they’ll likely say something along the lines of: “A co-working space allows me to see new faces and feel less alone.” Just sharing a space with strangers can have massive benefits to a person’s mental health. However, The 5th Floor saw an opportunity to create even more avenues for human connection through offering event spaces for people to come together.

- An event hall that can fit up to 50 pax.

Each meeting room comes equipped with state-of-the-art screens, whiteboards, WLAN connection. The Social Square at The 5th Floor Muttenz even provides a free flow of tea and water for all event attendees. Premium coffees are also available for a minimal fee. Upon request, The 5th Floor employees are also happy to customize the furnishings in our event spaces. We are able to provide U-shape arrangements, theatre-style seating, and bar tables, depending on the needs of your event.

Of course, because each venue is located within The 5th Floor co-working spaces, they come with the amenities of a traditional office: printers, fax machines, and reception areas, guaranteeing a seamless and stress-free experience. At The 5th Floor, we believe that it’s these small details that provide a much-needed professional touch to any individual or business looking to be taken seriously. When you partner with a co-working space like The 5th Floor to host your event, rest assured that we’ve got the logistics covered. Your community matters to us, too.

Every global office of The 5th Floor comes with a variety of event spaces that can facilitate all types of professional social gatherings. Whether you’re a self-starting entrepreneur who needs to host a brainstorming session with your team, or an established company organizing a conference that’s simply too big for your own office, our spaces have what you need. From seminars to team buildings and corporate networking events, The 5th Floor co-working spaces have seen it all.

For example, The 5th Floor Muttenz comes with:

- 5 meeting rooms (6-8 pax)

- 2 seminar rooms (15 pax)

- An event space (20 pax)

Avalon Tutors Are Here!

It’s Never Too Late to Learn Seneca the Younger is quoted as saying, “It is never too late to learn what is always necessary to know.” However, sometimes learning can be a difficult endeavor to take on. Especially when you feel like it’s you against the subject material you’re trying to master. Or maybe a child you know is having difficulty in school and is in need of supplemental learning. That’s where our team at Avalon Mail Center comes in.

Now, what does a mail center have to do with learning? Believe it or not, we offer tutoring services! And there are loads of benefits associated with supplemental learning like tutoring. For one, it offers the student of the subject at hand a more individualized learning experience. With a more one-on-one approach, in our private rooms, the tutor can tailor the course material to exactly what you need without unnecessary filler. Another benefit of tutoring is an overall improvement in academic performance and higher self-esteem.

Our facility offers a wide array of tutoring subjects. We offer Spanish (kindergarten through 12th grade and beyond) and English (kindergarten through 5th grade) language learning as well as Algebra (middle to high school level), Geometry (middle to high school level), Pre-Calc (high school level), Calculus (high school to college level), and Physics (high school to college level). Rates for these particular tutoring sessions start at $20 per student for 30 minutes at a time.

Or, you can purchase a 5 session package for $90. If you are interested in a group session (maximum of 3 students) it would be priced at $15 per student. Our language tutor, our very own Jenny Cruz, is a teacher at Family Christian Academy. Our math and physics tutor, Julian Daugherty, has his bachelor’s in Physics from the University of South Florida.

In addition to these tutoring programs, our facility also offers Wordpress programming classes and Part 107 Drone FAA certification. Our Wordpress programming class starts at $25 for every 45 minute session. Our Drone certification program is divided between 2 days that total 10 hours and begin at $200 plus $25 for the study guide. Our Wordpress tutoring sessions are taught by our very own Leo Yong and the Drone FAA Certification is taught by Don Daugherty, instructor at Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University.

Does any of this interest you? Would you like to know how to get started? It all starts with an inquiry into our tutoring services, either my email or by phone. Orlando Mom Collective Central Florida Guides & Resources - Spring Break

An average of 76 million people visit Central Florida each year! While most of them come for the main tourist attractions, like the theme parks and I-Drive, The City Beautiful and the surrounding areas in Central Florida have SO much to offer!

If you are sticking around for Spring Break in Central Florida, you’re in luck! We’ve created a list of unique, affordable, and local outings that make Central Florida such a great place to live, work and play.

For the adventurers

Go berry picking! We love Amber Brooke Farms because there is so many things to do after the berry picking! But there are so many places in Central Florida to berry pick, try to go to as many as you can!

DeLeon Springs State Park. From breakfast to kayaking, this is a great local adventure!

Orlando Wetlands. A perfect family outing for wildlife viewing, and a nature experience.

RDV Ice Den. Dig out your coat and gloves and tie on a pair of ice skates for open skate at RDV.

Mini Golf. One of the perks of living in such a popular tourist destination is MINI GOLF! Pirates Cove is well-kept and has two locations in the I-Drive area. We also recommend Congo River Golf. Bowling. Call a friend, find an alley near your house, and get there early. You’ll find wide open lanes and an hour (or more) of fun for the kids while you sit back and catch up with your gal pal. We love Keg Social because there is an arcade and ping pong tables too! Tip: call ahead to make sure you don’t visit during league time. I did this and the kids were so disappointed because we could not bowl there!

Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens. If you haven’t visited this local zoo, you’re missing out. Absolutely worth the trip!

For water lovers

Sail Cocoa Beach. Experience the Space Coast like never before on a catamaran sailing excursion. They are offering kids sail free on day sails with the purchase of an adult ticket.

The Swan Boats! Give your legs a workout and catch a unique view of the downtown Orlando skyline. Paddleboats are available for rent from 10am to 7pm (or later) and hold up to five people.

Head to the beach! A day trip to the beach is always a good idea! Pack some snacks and sunscreen and make a day of it!

Springs and State Parks. One of my favorite places to take outof-town guests is to a closeby spring. These hidden gems are all throughout Central Florida. You’ll want to know the best time to arrive, and what to take. Blue Spring info can be found here, or enjoy the Pancake house at DeLeon Springs!

For those that never stop learning

Visit your local library! With over 20 branches around Central Florida, the library is a great way to spend an afternoon or two over break. Orange County branches can be found here, and Seminole County branches can be found here!

WonderWorks! Kids can try to stand in hurricane-force winds, lie on a bed of nails, float through the ocean in a virtual submarine, and get trapped inside a giant bubble!

The Orlando Science Center. Engaging break camps that give children a productive and fun way to spend their time off from school with a chance to learn more about STEM in an exciting, interactive environment. Campers will explore a variety of handson science topics in a classroom setting and outdoors!

The Orange County Regional History Center. Located in the heart of downtown Orlando, the History Center is smart, surprising and fun. Best suited for school-aged children.

Mad Science! Interactive and engaging for kids of all ages. Kids get to explore different fields of science in fun, hands on ways!

For the artsy

Download busy packets from Beeloo! We have partnered with them to create Orlando themed crossword puzzles, coloring pages and more! There are tons of different categories too!

The Orlando Museum of Art. With an incredible kids’ section and a healthy collection of art from all periods, the OMA is a fantastic jewel in The City Beautiful‘s crown.

Nailed It DIY Studios. Let them inspire your child with a unique DIY camp this spring break! Campers explore their creativity throughout the week and will complete a wide variety of projects.

For the mom that needs some rest

Let the kids explore (while you sit and watch!) …

Indoor play space! There are so many to choose from, you could spend the whole spring break in the air conditioning!

Some water fun. Check out our list of local splash pads! There’s bound to be one near you!

One of Orlando’s wonderful parks. Meet up with some of your girlfriends for a “Stroller Date” at a local park. Here’s some info about a few of our favorites. But there’s so much more, including Azalea Lane (Winter Park), Lake Lily Park (Maitland), R.D.Keene Park (Windermere), Eastmonte Park (Altamonte), Maitland Community Park (Maitland), Chapin Station (Winter Park), Delaney Park (Downtown), Friendship Park (Oviedo), Tanja King Park (Avalon Park) and Minehaha Park (Maitland) — just to name just a few!

Still looking for ideas?

Check out some more outdoor adventures, things to do in Orlando or these family friendly restaurants if you need a nice lunch break!

There is so much to do, we are certain that you’ll have a fun-filled Spring Break, and hopefully never hear the words, “I’m bored!”

Spring Cleaning for Your Smile

It Makes a Difference!

Regular cleanings, including scaling and polishing by your dentist or hygienist, will remove plaque and tartar (mineralized plaque) which builds up over time and is nearly impossible to remove with regular brushing or flossing. Dentists use special tools or ultrasonic sound waves to help remove plaque or tartar. Without a regularly scheduled cleaning, plaque and tartar can attack the gums, which can lead to gingivitis and a number of other complications.

Spring is on its way! For many of you, this is the time to thoroughly clean your homes of dust and cobwebs, get rid of clutter and let a breath of fresh air into your life. But what about your smile? Even with regular daily brushing and flossing, routine cleanings, or “prophylaxis” (literally “preventive treatment of disease”) at the dentist should be an important part of your spring routine. A twice-annual examination, check-up, and cleaning are highly recommended. In fact, according to the Academy of General Dentistry, getting a professional cleaning a least twice a year has a significant impact on the quality of a person’s long-term oral health. In the case of professional teeth cleaning, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Professional cleanings and routine exams can also bolster your at-home dental hygiene routine and give your dentist a chance to take a close look at your mouth to ensure that you don’t have any problems that have gone undetected.

On top of keeping your smile squeaky clean and making sure your oral health is in check, a professional cleaning appointment gives you the opportunity to have a conversation with your dentist about your daily dental routine or any concerns you may have. Regular exams and cleanings can give your dentist a good idea of what your habits are, allowing them to suggest changes you can make to improve your oral health. Take time for yourself and your teeth –schedule a spring cleaning appointment with your dentist and keep your smile bright!

Moving at Any Age!

According to research from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 4 out of 10 cancer cases in the United States are associated with preventable risk factors. Excess body weight, poor diet, and physical inactivity are factors that contribute to increased cancer risk. To help facilitate cancer prevention, the Y believes a healthy lifestyle can start at any age – and we’re here to help!

No matter where you are on your health and wellness journey, the YMCA of Central Florida is here for you every step of the way!

Preschool-Age Children

It is recommended that preschool-age children participate in physical activity throughout the day to enhance growth and development. Three hours per day of activity of all intensities are suggested.

School-Age Children and Adolescents

For school-age children and adolescents, 60 minutes or more of physical activity should be conducted each day. Muscle and bone-strengthening exercises, such as push-ups, should be performed at least three days per week.

Adults

All adults should avoid inactivity; some physical activity is better than none. At least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes per week of vigorous activity, is recommended. It is also suggested that adults partake in moderate or high-intensity muscle-strengthening activities two or more days per week.

Specific Populations

Older adults, those who are pregnant, and/or those with chronic health conditions and disabilities should consult their physicians and follow modified guidelines. Cancer survivors should consult their physicians and follow modified guidelines adapted to their specific cancers and treatments.

How Our Family Lives, Learns, Works & Plays in Avalon Park

When it comes to Orlando, our family is about as local as they come. My husband and I were both born and raised here, and me and my siblings were born at the hospital just 10 miles from where we live now. We, like our parents, grew up here when there was nothing but cow fields and orange groves and yes, those stories are true. As our city developed, our family continued to inch further and further East.

LIVE

We moved to the Avalon Park area just shy of 13 years ago. Since then, we have raised two amazing children, and recently welcomed our first grandson who also lives in the area. My motherin-law has called Encore At Avalon Park Assisted Living and Memory Care Community her home for the past five years, and my parents live just a few miles away. With five generations centered around my grandparents, and all of us living within a 20-mile radius, family events can get a little crowded. We have had holiday parties, a baby shower, a 50th anniversary, and first birthday at the Avalon Community Room and celebrated my cousins wedding in the Ballroom at The Pavilion at Avalon Park.

LEARN

Education and top-notch schools are one of the biggest draws to the Avalon Park area. Our children and grandchild have locally attended and graduated from nursery, preschool, elementary, middle and high school. As a family we have attended seminars at Encore regarding dementia and senior care, as well as a number of charitable and educational events on The 5th Floor. Our family has enjoyed learning and spending time together in our community through volunteering and doing acts of service. Avalon offers limitless opportunities for citizens and families to volunteer. Service is encouraged and nurtured from a young age with organizations like K-Kids, Honors Society and Scouts and carried over into adulthood with civic organizations like Rotary Club and Kiwanis. Some of our best memories with our children have been watching them discover the value of volunteering and learning the joy of giving by helping others.

WORK

I opened my company Evolution Medical Technologies (EVO-MED) in 2011. We

are a small woman owned business, that provides biomedical implants to hospitals and surgeons throughout the United States and overseas. In early 2020 at the height of the pandemic, the Avalon Park group announced it had created the Entrepreneur Fund to support and empower local entrepreneurs and business owners in the rapidly changing business climate. EVO-MED was fortunate enough to be chosen as one of the top five 2020 Innovator Award Recipients, which included a generous personalized award package and office space at The 5th Floor in the brand-new Avalon Park Innovation Center, located in the heart of downtown Avalon. This award offered my company the chance to reset, refresh, and reengage at a time of great uncertainty not only in my industry, but across the world. In early 2021 I opened a local office at The 5th Floor, a stunning and modern proworking environment comprised of various sized offices, meeting rooms and versatile coworking spaces. This space was thoughtfully designed to foster community, collaboration, and growth in entrepreneurship. Not to mention, WOW what a view!

Since winning the award I have had time to focus on things like mission, branding and growth. EVO-MED has expanded our presence in the US and opened markets in 3 new countries, with entry into two others slated for 2023. We have partnered with the Avalon Park Group, Our Legacy, and Donate Life Florida to raise community awareness about organ, eye and tissue donation. We’ve worked together on multiple events including Absolutely Avalon’s first annual Avalon Park Donate Life Pinwheel Garden, honoring the 230 Central Florida donor heroes that gave the ultimate Gift of Life in 2021. I have made contacts, learned invaluable lessons, and created lasting friendships with other Entrepreneur Fund Award winners, business owners, and Members of the 5th floor.

PLAY

Like many of you, we have spent long hours on the fields at Tanja King Park and at the stadium, theater, and gym at Timber Creek. Our kids have done karate at Championship Martial Arts and played countless seasons of school and YMCA sports. Our daughter cheered over a decade for the Pop Warner Avalon Wolves and Timber Creek High School

cheer team (GO WOLVES!!!) They won several Regional and State titles and even a National Championship. Our son is completing his 8th year of scouting, advancing from Tiger Scout in first grade to crossing over to BSA Troop 173 where he’s earned the ranks of Scout, Tenderfoot, Second and First Class. He is currently working on his Star rank and looks forward to following in his troop’s rich tradition of achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. We play at the many community festivals and events and eat, drink, and watch live music and sports at restaurants like Eastside Bistro, The Market Place, and Bowigens Beer Company.

It is with the deepest of gratitude that our family would like to thank Beat Kahli and the entire hard-working team at the Avalon Park Group, for their dedication, investment, and commitment to our community in both good and bad economic times. We would also like to wish the people of Avalon Park and its surrounding area’s a joyous and positive start to the Spring Season! Let’s all give thanks and celebrate our blessings this season by donating and volunteering to help others.

Bill Cowles, Orange County Supervisor of Elections, Announces He is Not Seeking Re-Election

Bill Cowles, Orange County’s longest serving supervisor of elections, announced today that he intends to retire at the end of his current term, January 6, 2025.

“It has been the role of a lifetime to be trusted by the citizens of Orange County to conduct secure election with the highest standards of integrity. After a fulfilling 33 years (which will be 35 years at the end of the term), first as chief deputy and now supervisor, it is time to pass the torch and retire to private life and enjoy time with my wife and four grandsons,” said Supervisor Cowles.

Bill Cowles has been an integral part the Orange County Supervisor of Elections office since 1989. Prior to joining the elections team as chief deputy, he served thirteen years on the staff of the Central Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America. He was elected as the Orange County Supervisor of Elections in 1996 and has been re-elected in every election since. Bill supervises the fifth-largest county elections office in the state of Florida.

Cowles’ tenure has seen its fair share of elections excitement. The first county-wide election he conducted was the 1997 Penny Sales Tax election. It was declared by the US Postal Service to be the largest mail-ballot election at the time. Cowles’ first presidential election was the infamous 2000 election filled with hanging chads – although, to be clear, in the words of Cowles: “Chad never came to Orange County.” Additionally, the most contentious election he has overseen was the presidential race of 2020.

From hanging chads to a complete overhaul of elections cybersecurity and the transparency of today, Supervisor Cowles has steadied the helm through some tumultuous and changing times.

Bill Cowles will leave the elections office in good hands, having assembled a team of professionals that has a combined 300+ years of elections experience. Several senior staffers have more than 15

years of experience each, from the local elections office, other counties in Florida, and even from multiple states.

Always finding new ways to engage the community in the elections process, Mr. Cowles created the “Adopt-A-Precinct” program in 1998. The community partnership allows organizations to serve the

community as poll workers while teambuilding and fundraising for their cause. In the most recent 2022 general election, 50% of the polling places were adopted by community groups.

With his 70th birthday approaching, Supervisor Cowles joked that he “never intended to break Earl K. Woods’ record.” He chose to announce at this time out of courtesy to those seeking to fill his shoes, allowing them more time to begin making plans for their campaigns.

Cowles served on the Federal Elections Assistance Commission Board of Advisors from 2007 to 2011. His other professional involvements include being past president of the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections, as well as past president of the International Association of Clerks, Recorders, Election Officials, and Treasurers.

Cowles graduated in 1976 with a degree in public administration from the University of Central Florida. Not only is Bill busy with his professional associations, he is also very active in is church and community. He is an elder at Quest Church, a board member of the Central Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America, a member of the UCF Public Administration Advisory Board, and a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of North Orlando.

Bill Cowles has been married since 1978 to Cheryl and has two married sons and four grandsons. He will miss the job but is looking forward to spending more time with his family.

Orange County’s Domestic Violence Commission Addresses Teen Dating Violence

Control and Prevention, nearly 1 in 11 female and 1 in 15 male high school students report having experienced physical dating violence in the last year; and 1 in 9 female and 1 in 36 male high school students report having experienced sexual dating violence in the last year.

“It has always been an issue, but what has changed are the ways in which young people are reaching out to gain support, which is why we’re hearing more about it,” explained Johnson.

When Tina first came to Pace Center for Girls Orange in middle school, she was experiencing behavioral challenges and shared that not only had she witnessed domestic violence, but she “may” have been in a violent relationship herself. Her counselor listened, and through the shared resources provided by Pace and the Orange County Domestic Violence Commission, Tina finally realized she was not in a healthy situation.

During her junior year, Tina returned to Pace and still had not let go of the relationship. Over time, Pace became a safe space for her, she got out of the relationship and graduated on time. Today, she is manager at one of the largest local restaurants in Orange County and on her way to getting her associates degree.

“Tina began to find her self-worth and break free from the violent trajectory her family followed,” explained Rosene Johnson, executive director, Pace Center for Girls Orange “This is a life we had the ability to change. It wasn’t easy, but she did the work. When she starts her own family and has kids, she will spot any potential problem and not allow the cycle to continue.”

The Orange County Domestic Violence Commission, which Mayor Jerry L. Demings reconvened in 2019 in response to higher of rates of incidents of domestic violence in the County, is working with Pace Center for Girls Orange to provide resources and advocacy to youth who have experienced teen dating violence, which affects millions of teens in the United States every year.

Teen dating violence occurs between two people in a close relationship and can include physical and sexual violence, psychological abuse and stalking. According to the Centers for Disease

Pace works with Domestic Violence Commission stakeholders to provide kids with the mental health services they need to process what they see in their homes and realize it is not healthy. Consequently, when they are in a relationship, they know violence is not acceptable.

“Until a teen feels safe, there can’t be trust, and they can’t become their own advocate,” said Johnson. “When they get to Pace, they meet with a counselor on a consistent basis in a smaller environment, which allows them to let down their guards and feel safe.

“For boys, it’s the opposite side of the same coin. Girls tell us the boys have witnessed or seen domestic violence, and when we dig deeper, the parent shares they’ve also witnessed it, so it’s cyclical on both ends, which is why we have to spend so much time educating and counseling to educate this next generation and end these cycles of violence and trauma.”

Two-way communication between Pace and the Domestic Violence Commission is critical because they are not simply sharing data and statistics, but also resources and information on how they can in turn share these resources throughout the County and create more awareness.

“We need to keep this issue at the forefront of people’s minds,” said Johnson. “Just because we see smiles and fun photos on social media, we can miss the fact a young person is hurting. So, whether you’re a parent, teacher or judge, if you’re connected to youth, take the time to ask if they’re okay. Be that trusted person. And if not, help them get the help they need.”

For more, go to Domestic Violence Commission, and if you know a young lady who needs support or resources, go to Pace Center for Girls Orange.

Rotary’s Annual Poker Tournament a Huge Success!

Super Bowl Saturday meant more than football to local Rotarians and guest poker players with a memorable evening raising funds for their club and the Second Chance of Florida Foundation. The sold-out event raised over $50,000 dollars and generated awareness for both charities. Events like these make a big impact in the lives of students like Riken Nathu, who received a scholarship and went on to graduate Medical School to be a doctor. Donations to Second Chance of Florida Foundation allow students like Riken the confidence to give back to the community by helping others.

A big congratulations goes to Andrew Darling, the winner of the tournament – taking home the much-talked about “winner belt”, a gorgeous bracelet from Avalon Park Jewelers and the cash prize for first place.

Orange County Medical Examiner

Appointed to the State of Florida

Medical Examiners Commission

Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings announced the appointment of Dr. Joshua Stephany, District 9 Chief Medical Examiner, to the Medical Examiners Commission for the State of Florida. Dr. Stephany was selected by Governor Ron DeSantis in recognition of his long-standing career accomplishments and professionalism.

Dr. Stephany is the District 9 Chief Medical Examiner. He is a current Fellow of the National Association of Medical Examiners and previously served as the President of the Florida Association of Medical Examiners. Dr. Stephany earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire and his Doctor of Medicine from St. George’s University.

“It’s an honor to be appointed to the Medical Examiner’s Commission and to work with my colleagues to maintain the quality of the Florida Medical Examiner system,” said Dr. Stephany.

Dr. Stephany will join the seven-member commission who will interact with local, state, and federal agencies to enhance the medical examiners’ role of assisting the state with death investigations and reporting. In addition, the commission oversees disciplinary oversight of medical examiner activities including legislative issues, maintenance of the commission rules and other administrative responsibilities.

Mayor Demings Honors Local Tuskegee Airmen Chapter with Proclamation

To honor this commitment to service, Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings has ordered through proclamation that February 27 is officially from here on forward Tuskegee Airmen Incorporated Chief Master Sergeant Richard R. Hall, Jr., Central Florida Chapter Day. The Mayor has a meet and greet scheduled with chapter members on Monday, February 27 at 3 p.m., at which time he will present the members with the proclamation. “The Tuskegee Airmen not only fought the Axis Powers during World War II, but they also fought segregation in the United States Armed Forces through nonviolent direct action,” said Mayor Demings. “Today, the Central Florida Chapter continues to showcase the qualities of pride and community service through their important work in the region.”

One of the most uplifting stories of perseverance and courage that emerged from World War II is the journey of the Tuskegee Airmen, unsung heroes who made it possible for African Americans to fly in the United States military and fought through segregation and prejudice to become one of the most highly respected fighter groups in World War II. Altogether, 992 Tuskegee Air Field pilots flew 1,578 missions and 15,533 sorties, destroyed 261 enemy aircraft and won more than 850 medals.

Since then, incorporated chapters of the Tuskegee Airmen have focused on honoring the accomplishments and perpetuating the history of African Americans who participated in air crew, ground crew and operations support training in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Locally, the Central Florida Chapter supports local communities in youth development of citizenship and scholarship while promoting aerospace, atmospheric, aviation and cyberspace careers.

The Central Florida Chapter is named after Tuskegee Airmen Chief Master Sgt., Richard R. Hall, Jr., who maintained engines for the “Red Tails” P-51 aircraft. Hall also served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars before retiring and was one of 300 airmen to receive the Congressional Gold Medal from President George W. Bush in 2007. Hall passed away on January 25, 2021 at the age of 97.

Formed in 2019, the Central Florida Chapter is committed to investing in the next generation of aerospace professionals by supporting educational and engagement opportunities such as drone camps for students and outreach to JROTC units, as well as sponsoring aviation scholarships, sponsoring Toastmasters Young Leadership Program at Winter Park Community Center, and, most recently, celebrating a student member’s acceptance to the United States Naval Academy.
