The development of the Mission and Vision Statement refocussed the attention of the College community on

our purpose as a Catholic school. We discovered the story of Helene de Chappotin and her congregation, the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, and recognised that

I believe the program we offer demonstrates our commitment to these areas. We provide our students with many opportunities to reflect upon the place of

was an eventful and productive year for Ave Maria College. I Representatives of the Ave Maria I College community were invited L____ \_x I to participate in the renewal of the College's Mission Statement. Ave Maria parents, students, staff, leadership team and members of the Board of Management reflected upon Ave Maria's rich Catholic tradition, which includes the charism of the College's founders - the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.

j

As an educational institution, the Ave Maria College community was asked to articulate its understandings of the core Catholic values and aspirations it aspires to. Each family received a copy of the revised Mission Statement and I would encourage you to become familiar with this document that will be the reference point for the development of future policies and directions of the College. I wish to publicly thank those who generously gave of their time to work with our Principal, Mrs Bell, in developing the revised Mission Statement.

The College has embarked on an exciting Master Building (Refurbishment) Project designed to provide Ave Maria students and their teachers with excellent and up-to-date facilities. The Board of Management approved the Project's Stages 1 & 2, which includes the refurbishment of the Science and Technology wings and provision for additional cover area. Work on Stages 1 & 2 are due to begin at the end of November 2001. The Board of Management is confident that this exciting building project will further enhance the provision of high quality learning and teaching. Today's educational demands are very high and it is imperative that the College is able to provide the best possible facilities for its students and teachers to meet these increasing demands. I wish to acknowledge the innovative work of the Board of Management's Finance Sub-committee. This committee has worked diligently to ensure that the College remains in a sound financial position to tackle new projects. An important Board function during 2001 was to review existing College policy and to initiate new policies. This year the Board ratified the Fee Charging Policy and the Security Identification Policy.

VIDIAN 2001 -

board The Board kept abreast of developments within the College by inviting members of staff to present aspects of their work and responsibilities to the Board. These contributions were invaluable for informing Board members of the Mr Peter Devery and Julia Ottobre, Class various curricula of 2001 - Recipient of the 2001 Board of and extra curricula Management Award for Excellence activities initiated by the College. The Parents and Friends Association were very active and, once again, members worked diligently to involve parents in the life of the College. I wish to thank the office bearers and the members of the Parents and Friends Association for their vast contribution in organising a number of College initiatives associated with social events and fund-raising. Board members had the opportunity to participate in liturgical celebrations and other major College functions. The Board values these important opportunities to be intimately involved in important College celebrations.

The Registered Schools Board (RSB) is the government authority responsible for reviewing the operations of Catholic schools. During 2001 Ave Maria College was reviewed by the RSB and received an excellent report. This is great testimony to the work of Mrs Bell and her staff in maintaining a high standard of education for Ave Maria students. Mrs Bell's principal review was conducted during Term 3 of this year. Representatives from the Board of Management and the school community were given the opportunity to meet with the review panel to reflect on the role of the Principal. The review panel's report to the College's Canonical Administrators acknowledged the excellent contribution Mrs Bell has made in her first three years at the College. I wish to publicly thank her for her outstanding leadership as Principal of Ave Maria College. She has demonstrated a capacity to be innovative and creative in developing a strong vision for the future of the College. I wish to also acknowledge the support and dedication of the College leadership team and staff who have contributed significantly to the achievements of the College.

I wish to thank the members of the Board of Management for their contribution throughout the year, particularly those members that represented the Board on sub-committees and working parties. To those members who have completed their two-year representation on the Board, I sincerely thank them for their support and their contribution over the two years. On behalf of Father John Spillane, President of the Canonical Administrators, I wish everyone a very holy and merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. MR PETER DEVERY

I

(John Milton - Of education 1644.)

The staff, students and parents of the Ave Maria College community spent much time during the year rewriting the College's Mission and Vision Statement. Milton's thoughts very much link in with the learning commitments which have been included in our new statement...

"In our expression of Learning we are committed to: * Assisting our students develop positive attitudes towards life and learning and helping them discover self knowledge, inner strength and confidence that will sustain them throughout their lives..." The College's commitment to its students is unquestioned. 2001 saw the implementation of many of innovations which the College had been developing during the past two years. Some of these include: a

both in teaching and non-teaching roles. I would especially like to thank to all the Heads of Faculty Mrs Cheryl Kerin (Arts), Ms Madeleine Laming (English), Mr Nat Coull (Health & PE), Mrs Carla Godoy, (LOTE), Mr Patrick Platt (Religious Education),Mrs Lydia Roper-Willis (Science), Mr Lanny De Almeida ( and while on leave acting in his place Mrs Jenny Caligari), (SOSE), Mrs Lyndal McCall (Mathematics) and Mr Robert Martini (Technology). Without the hard work and cooperation of these staff little could be accomplished.

I would also like to thank Mrs Janet Jensen (Careers Education Coordinator) Mrs Jennifer Lawrence (Numeracy Coordinator) and Mrs Pam Pearce (Literacy Coordinator) for all their efforts in assisting both the students and staff in their respective role. Finally and most sincerely I would like to all the members of the College Leadership team: Mrs Olwen Bell (Principal), Ms Cathy Livingston (Deputy Principal: Director of Staff and Student Welfare), Mr Louis Papadimitriou (College Organiser), Ms Antonia Caridi (Faith Development and Learning Technologies Coordinator) and Mr Alan Thompson (Business Manager). Without the support, loyalty, vision, diligence and care that these people put into the school and their roles, not only would my task as Director of Studies be impossible, but the College would not be able to function.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish the entire College community a holy, safe, joy filled and restful Christmas break and I hope to see everyone re-energised and ready to face new challenges at the start of 2002. MR CRIS SCARLATA

ver the past 12 months, we have seen our College grow together, and our community spirit heighten. We have watched girls support each other, and teachers encouraging students to strive for excellence. I feel honoured to have been part of this community, and privileged to have been elected as College Captain.

O

As I reflect on the year that has flown by ever so quickly, I smile and know that the memories I have will never be forgotten. The Leadership team for 2001 began with 11 young and enthusiastic girls, eager to make massive changes in the College, but as time went on, we realised that it wasn't the big changes that were important. It was the spirit of the students, the community that always stood by one another and the generosity to help someone less fortunate than ourselves. It was evident to the world outside the Ave Maria community, that we had school spirit. From the Swimming Carnival with cowboys, Hawaiian girls, pirates and insects of many descriptions, to the support for the refurbished Chapel, we had spirit. As a team we have organised many exciting events such as the "Big Brother” Talent Quest and the Wmter Sleepout. With record numbers of student participation in both events, it showed the commitment that this team gave to their positions as leaders.

our College that is willing to guide, learn and assist in all things capable. A position of leadership is not just the meetings, assemblies or the badge. It's so much more than that, it's an interaction with students, staff and the College community, working together for the good of our school. The lessons we have learnt as leaders are invaluable. Together with the Year 12s we leave the College knowing that our final year of secondary school was full of stress, studying, but also a time where we grew as women. Ave Maria College will always be in our hearts, and we wish all the best for the future team of leaders. FIONA MULLEN

t has been a most exciting and challenging year in Faith Development at Ave Maria College. In my new position as FDC that I embraced with zeal, I endeavoured to enhance the spirituality that exists within our school community and to nurture it further. Term One was rich with many liturgical celebrations such as the Opening of the School Year Mass, Ash Wednesday and Holy Week Liturgies and of course the most joyous gathering for the Feast of the Annunciation on Ave Maria Day. These were all wonderful reflections of God's presence among us. In addition, the Liturgy Group were appointed and throughout the year they have assisted in all liturgical events, especially the preparation of the First Friday Masses. In Term Two, the Year 7 students invited their grandparents to come to the College and participate in the Elders liturgy and the theme revolved around the celebration of Jewish Passover and its links to Christian traditions. Reconciliation Gayip also took place in May at the Rod Laver Arena and involved the telling of the story of Melbourne's Aboriginal people through dance, song and listening to story. Later that month, the staff attended a Faith Development Day that explored the themes of Ecology, Community, Cosmology and Spirituality. The most significant liturgical event for Term Two was the Mass for the Poor celebrated by Bishop Joseph O'Connell. Students collected goods to be distributed to the needy in our community and the Blessed Sacrament was returned to the tabernacle in the newly refurbished Chapel. In Term Three another Staff Faith Development Day took place and this focussed on Images of Ourselves and Images of Jesus. Staff enjoyed an opportunity to reflect upon Jesus in their lives in beautiful surroundings. Furthermore, the College Captain and College Vice Captain for 2001 attended the Solemn Mass and Liturgical Reception at St. Patrick's Cathedral of the Most Reverend Denis J Hart DD, the eighth Archbishop of Melbourne. Term Four was again filled with many liturgical and nonliturgical events that nourished the faith vision of our College - to follow Him in how we forgive and hope and celebrate the joys and sorrows of life together. This was evident in the emotional Valedictory Mass held on October 24, the Year 11 Final Liturgy and the Year 7-10 Final Mass which were all most meaningful due to the wonderful contributions made by staff and students who were actively involved in singing, ministering and reading. Throughout the year too, all year levels have experienced various Reflection days, which have aimed to challenge students' faith journey and provide them with opportunities to interact with one another in ways that are not experienced in lessons. Overall it has been a most rewarding and uplifting experience to be such an integral component of the preparation of our young women students to seek justice and truth, to come to know Jesus through the traditions and stories of our faith and to celebrate His presence amongst us in daily life and especially in the Eucharist. twelve REFLECTIONS With Year 7 over and done, it appeared that all our observations of the older students could now be put into practice for Year 8! Dresses had suddenly become shorter and as if by magic they had begun to expose our knee caps! Hair had left the confines of plastic pony tail holders and two thin strands had emerged because they never seemed to reach the clasp of the elastic band Mannerisms had begun to take over our innocent expressions, we had gone from naivety to understanding. . e even his year has been both challenging and rewarding for me as Year 11 Coordinator. Let me reflect on what has been a very full and fruitful year. The Homeroom Teachers Mrs Leslie Adams, Ms Emma Hawkins, Ms Sandra Mamo, Mrs Lyndal McLean and Mrs Suzanne Morgan and I have worked as a team to provide exciting opportunities for the girls to excel in the academic, music, drama, spiritual and sporting areas. The Faith Development Coordinator, Careers Counsellor, Subject teachers and Student Counsellor have also assisted us in creating a programme suitable for the needs of the girls.

T

Our first homeroom teachers meeting opened with the following reflection, We can create grand dreams That never leaves the ground, Or we can be builders of dreams that come true.

Year 11 Homeroom Captains - Louise McDonald-Smith 11 A, Lucinda Falk 11H, Rebecca Prenc 11M, Tahlia Tamer 11J

A Reflection Day that concentrated on achieving our dreams and building meaningful relationships with others further enhanced the theme of this quotation. After the Reflection Day the girls went on an Outdoor Camp at Lake Eildon where they were challenged both physically and spiritually. Many staff and students participated enthusiastically in white water rafting, bike riding and other outdoor activities. This was complemented by a liturgy organised by Miss Antonia Caridi, which focused on friendships.

I would like to thank the Homeroom Teachers who have been a supportive and dedicated team to work with, parents, Homeroom Captains and SRC representatives for their efforts throughout the year. I would like to wish the Year 11 students every success for their last year at

Ave Maria College. MRS JENNY CALIGARI

Year 11 Coordinator

Throughout the year girls actively participated in serving others by involving themselves in the St Vincent de Paul Society overseen by Mrs Morgan and I. Many cakestalls were organised, second hand clothes collected and non-perishable food items donated. Mrs Mary Ralph our local Essendon Representative was a guest speaker at one of our year level Assemblies. She spoke about the valuable experiences that she had gained from her voluntary work with the organisation and proved to be a wonderful inspiration for the girls. Lauren Monagle, Laura Joiner

A fortnightly Assembly Programme was instigated which enabled the girls to be introduced to guest speakers who spoke on University Courses, Voluntary work, goal setting, time management and numerous other topics. These were implemented through workshops and lectures. I would like to extend my thanks to Mrs Janet Jensen, the Careers Counsellor and for the speakers in our local community for their support and participation

in the programme.

ten has proven to be a exciting year for the Year 10 students - one which has provided them with many challenges and hopefully armed them with skills needed to tackle the upcoming years at VCE. The year commenced with the girls settling well into their homerooms, establishing new friendship groups as well as building on those that they had made in previous years at the College. Events such as the Swimming Carnival, Athletics Carnival and the Reflection Day that were held in Term 1 helped the girls reinforce the bonds that they had made.

2001

Under the guidance of Mrs Janet Jensen the girls were given the opportunity to consider the possible career paths that Year 10 Homeroom Captains - Sarah Whiter 10L. Melinda Tzambazakis 10L. they may undertake in the years after life Verity Jenkins 10R Tania Di Lizia 10S, Emma Lawrie 10R, Kate Sheales 10R, at Ave. In May, the girls undertook Work Mr Dino Conversano. I would like to graciously thank positive and the girls proved to be a credit not only to the all members of the Year 10 teaching staff of 2001. Your College but also to themselves. In particular, I would like to thank the professions addressed the girls in a series of seminars. My Homeroom teachers, Mr Patrick Platt, Mr Robert Martini, Ms special thanks go out to Mrs Jensen and the group of Ruth Paterson, Mrs Lydia Roper-Willis, Mrs Robyn speakers that were organised for the day. They provided O'Connor, Ms Louise Sharp and Mrs Madeleine Laming for the girls with both the technical information about careers your help and support throughout the year. I have had the extreme pleasure in watching the Year 10 girls of 2001 develop into the outstanding individuals that Armed with the above experiences, as well as the results they are today - many of whom I am confident will make from first Semester, the girls were ready to make decisions excellent leaders in the years to come. I wish you all every regarding their subject selections for VCE. This took place success that life has to offer and pray that the Lord be with over a number of weeks early in Term 3 and involved a VCE you every step of the way. It was in this term that the class leaders, MR DINO CONVERSANO despite all obstacles organised the Year 9 & 10 Social with Year 10 Coordinator St Bernards College which proved to be a great success. Undoubtedly the highlight of the evening was Mrs Pearce's grand entrance, which confirmed that, despite our age, teachers are really just wild teenagers with the battle scars to prove it.

The Outdoor Education day held in October was a day to remember. Conducted at Anglesea and Torquay beaches, the day involved a surf carnival in the morning session followed by a surfboard lesson in the afternoon. It was gratifying to see enthusiasm with which the girls involved themselves in these events. Special thanks go out to the staff who ensured the smooth running of the day and in particular to Mr Platt whose slide show presentation at the

Year 10 has been a fantastic learning experience and what better way than to spend it with 10L. The homeroom was constantly enthused with everything they did and with Mr Platt as a Homeroom teacher, what more could you expect. Exams certainly put the pressure on us but with Work Experience and Excursions, we had some time for fun. I hope 10L has brought out the best in us all. This year would not have run so smoothly without the endless help of all of our teachers. I would like to thank all our subject teachers and, in particular, Mr Conversano and Mr Platt.

10R was the class we found out we were in, From up stairs to down stairs and back again. From Work Experience to exams and Outdoor Ed Day, It was an experience to remember, dare we say. We saw Sarah leave and Veronica come, But through it all we just had fun. Daniela, Vanessa and Louise always tried to sneak on the make-up, While Catherine's only just began to wake up. Kylie and Loren basketball mad, While Convo attempted to teach us to add. Kristy and Noella were a quiet pair, Anne-Marie and Josie were always there to care. Jess and Rebecca were two smart chicks, Casey and Athina were such a wild mix. Amy and Sarah sure joked around, While Kate and Laura didn't make a sound. Annette and Aggie were always late, Carmel and Laura proved the best of mates. Mrs O'Connor and Mrs Roper lead us with a guiding hand, At times all they wanted to do was bury their heads in the sand. And then there's us Emma and Kate, Who stood by and watched 10R fulfilling their fate.

10M What made 10M stand above the rest! What a big year we have had in 10M this year! We began the year electing our Leaders with our Homeroom teacher Mr Bonanno. We ended up with our new Leaders: Class Captain, Vanessa Sultana, Class Vice-Captain, Marie Ferraro, and SRC, Jessica Sardo. In a course of weeks we already had the very excited Deanna Rocca and Renee Rulli counting down the days and eventually the hours until the formal! Just as we thought those days were over, we have begun again with the Deb. At the end of Term One, we had to say goodbye to our Homeroom teacher Mr Bonanno and say hello to our new Homeroom teacher, Mr Martini. Then we hit Term Two exams which saw us studying harder than we have ever had been before! Term Three saw us planning our future by already choosing our VCE subjects. The teachers know 10M as the class who was frequently shown where the doors and windows were, and sometimes even visited Mr Conversano on his spares. We had the group in the corner who got into trouble and separated every class without fail! Now that Term Four is drawing to an end, we are beginning to stress again about our exams and the fact that we are going to be those girls walking around in the blue jumpers next year. VANESSA SULTANA

10P Patto's class of year tens, what an interesting bunch, Maryanne's plaitlets and Silvana's lunch. Tess, Natalie and Tania times two, Sanjani and Rebecca always know the right thing to do. The girls from Greenvale and Rea as well, Laughing and joking or gossiping with Adelle. Amanda B constantly plays with her hair, The vice Verity and Teneale never seem to be there. Carissa and her artworks are never apart, The end of August saw Nicole depart. The others down the back Amanda A, Crystal and Danielle, They really don't work but they seem to present themselves quite well. Belinda the SRC collected all the cash, And Sarah the Captain said "if anyone talks in prayer I'll smash". And lastly there's Patto she has a funny smile, Her chickens come first and her cat's are wild. All of us combined made up 10R We are one of a kind, a speciality.

EMMA LAWRIE. KATE SHEALES

10S What can I say about 10S! This year has been a great year In which we as a class have become great friends. With teachers like Mrs Laming and Ms Sharpe, our class was a great.

As a class we formed different groups . There were those who annoyed the teachers, those who were gossip queens, there were those who were sneaky, those who only worked and the group that was "just there"

Our class was also very holy and prayed every day, with Laura winning the prize for the most prayers of the year. Overall, our class was very unique and this year has been a great year which holds many memories. LAURA DILIZIA

hat a pleasure it has been coordinating Year 9 in 2001. The students have

been a very happy and responsive group. Each student has

been appreciated for what they have been able to offer individually and for

what they are able to add to the group as a whole. The staff and parents have made my role so worthwhile due to their dedication and commitment to ensuring

that the main focus of the year was to

encourage the students to do their very best in whatever they d'd.

Term 1 began well with the students quickly showing their pleasant and eager personalities. They took on the Outdoor

Education Camp with a vengeance and made this time away from home a time that they will never forget. I heard so many fabulous stories of great times had by all. This group proved that a camp is

Term 3 brought along some hard work and some serious fun. The Year 9 students raised over $900 on Daffodil Day for Cancer Research by selling merchandise to the other students of the College. Then it was time to get down to

Term 2 certainly had its challenges meeting the particular needs of some of the students of the level. It was a term

9B Miss Barry's Year 9 Homeroom comprised, of students with many different individual talents and personalities, has created a very special group of girls. They all had their own friendship groups but managed to work productively as a class. Even though they had the reputation of being quite loud, this was mainly due to them always knowing how to have fun and being enthusiastic about things, however, they were not always related to school. Year 9 Camp, Reflection Day, classroom debates and discussions, morning prayer and the selling of daffodils played a major role in helping 9B bond and unite as one group. Apart from the trials and tribulations 9B went through, they have always managed to pull together in the hard times, making it an unforgettable year.

I

eign it seems like only yesterday when I was observing the new Year 8 students looking nervously through the new class lists, wondering who their new homeroom teacher was going to be and what students would be in their classes. Now twelve months down the track, I venture to think they are probably already thinking with slight trepidation of all that 2002 will bring.

W

In the role of Year 8 Coordinator, I have been well assisted by my Year 8 team namely Maria Gianni, Janet Jensen, Anne Major, Mamie Thomas and of course Susy Vianello. They have worked extremely hard from a pastoral point of view and have on many occasions challenged their students to look at their own personal behaviour and their own personal development. Hopefully teachers and students were able to grow and learn from their shared experiences.

Year 8 Homeroom Captains - Jenna Cassar 8M. Mrs Irene Wrochna, Antionette Pangallo 8J, Justine Garcia 8T, Lara Pasquale 8T, Nicole Slattery 8J, Amy Crevatin 8G, Nicole Cannuli 8G

A very dedicated team of subject teachers also supported the Year 8 team and I know I speak not only for my team, but also for our students when I thank the subject teachers for their hard work and their dedication. Ave Maria has a reputation for the very personal care and attention that we are able to provide for our students and this was evident on a number of occasions throughout the year. The Year 8 students recently enjoyed the Year 7/8 Social with St Bernard's College. The event was held on Halloween Eve and so decorations were based on the Halloween theme. It was a very entertaining evening for staff and students of both colleges. No doubt many new dance moves were learnt by watching the dance demonstrations, given by a number of very talented individuals. I am still practising some of the moves I saw being performed.

Congratulations are in order for the number of successes they have had during the year in sporting, academic and personal areas, but most importantly, I would like to commend the way that they have taken on the challenge of improving themselves; it is my sincere hope that they take this attitude into the New Year. Thank you also for the great support I have received from parents throughout the year.

In wishing you all a very happy, holy and safe Christmas, I leave you with a Christmas poem written by Maria Caratozzolo of 8T, one of many very, very talented writers I have had the privilege of teaching this year. MRS IRENE WROCHNA

Year 8 Coordinator

An Outdoor Activity Day for Year 8 students was run by Auscamp at Heidelberg Park. Students rotated through three activities - initiatives, bike riding and rafting. There were many thrills and spills, mainly spills, into the Yarra River and a great day was enjoyed by all.

Two Reflection days were organised by our Faith Development Coordinator, Ms. Antonia Caridi and her team of RE teachers. The days were based on the theme of friendship. Girls were able to explore communication techniques, relationships with one another and their relationship with God. Students took part in a very beautiful and meaningful celebration of the Eucharist. Our facilitator was Fr Michael Court and all we can say is that he was "pure magic”.

CHRISTMAS

IS...

REFLECTION

Christmas is a time for love, a time for joy and peace, A time to decorate the Christmas tree, a time to have a big feast. It's a time when we can come together, faraway or near, To take away a little hope of sorrow and fear. Christmas could be all year round, if only we would try, To put aside our differences and maybe not to lie. If we could smile throughout the year as we do on Christmas day, Just think what happiness we would share along life's pathway.

DAY

On Friday 16 November and Monday 19 November the Year 8 students attended a Reflection Day at St Peter's Parish. We discussed many important issues such as friendship and the values that guide us through different relationships. The facilitator, Father Michael Court amused us with many magical tricks, which sent many of the girls wondering into their imagination. We completed many different and useful activities to do with trust, respect, understanding others and showing your interests and expressions towards other people. At lunch we were treated with scrumptious pizzas delivered to the parish, the girls enjoyed their favourite topped slices thoroughly.

give a gift of hope to one who otherwise has none, be a friend to someone who has had no friends before. be forgiving of our faults and of our sisters and brothers, live in peace and I harmony with ourselves and with each other.

Christmas is more than opening up the gift, It's more than singing Christmas carols and having big feasts. It's a feeling that can stay with you throughout each day all year, And all it takes is a loving heart and a sensitive ability to hear.

All of the Year 8 girls enjoyed and learnt many new aspects about friendship and qualities to remember in relationships. Overall it was a great day .

SOCIAL The Ave Maria and St Bernard's Year 7 and 8 Social was held on Wednesday 31 October. The Year 7 and 8 Leadership team transformed the Ave Hall into a Halloween theme. It was decorated with balloons, streamers, ghosts and pumpkins. We had a sensational D.J who played great funky music. The night started slow, but when the music started everybody got up and danced including the teachers. Many thanks go to the Leadership team for

decorating the Hall and creating such a fantastic atmosphere for the students. Also Thanks goes to Mrs Wrochna and Mrs Virgato for taking the time to help the us. Last but not least thanks goes to the Ave Maria girls and the St Bernard's boys who attended and made the 2001 Social such a great success. KRYSTAL GEORGE

seve We dreamt of school...... Where everyone would have a friend; Where risks could be taken; And successes celebrated and built on; Where the whole person was educated; And what we read in the Gospel; Came alive in our lives together.

With these sentiments foremost in our minds the Year 7s started the whirlwind of first term as new members of the Ave Maria College community. We were kept busy with College Mass, school photos and the Inter-house swimming Carnival, however the highlight of first term was definitely the school camp.

Three glorious days of sunshine at Campaspe Downs included swimming, horse riding, flying fox. canoeing, dancing, bushwalking and finding out about our new classmates, our teachers and our school. Our Family night was a great opportunity to introduce family to new friends and teachers and view some of those video camp bloopers.

By Ave Maria day, the girls really felt like they were part of the school as we celebrated this special feast day.

Term two started with the opportunity for girls to show their team spirit and athletic skills in the school Athletics Carnival at Aberfeldie.

The girls started their Student Development Program with Ms Livingston, she helped them explore issues like building self-esteem, bullying and assertiveness and helped them with their organisational skills.

The girls invited their grandparents and close elderly friends to a special Liturgy. With the assistance of the Interdisciplinary teachers and Ms Jodie Wassner we all shared in the spiritual journey of our Jewish ancestors through to the first celebration of the Eucharist. We reflected on many issues such a racism, bullying and caring for others in the beautiful serenity of Brimbank Park and our third term get off to a great start. We appreciated the history of our country but our political views were challenged on the Year 7 IDS excursion to Parliament house.

Several girls also chose not to go home one Friday night and slept in the College Hall. This participation in the Winter Sleepout was one of the many fund-raising activities the Year 7s and the Ave Maria community contributed to. As a school and as a Year level we mourned for families and the victims of the September 11 tragedy in New York and prayed for World Peace. Music song and dance abounded in the last week of term

as many of our Year 7s participated in the school talent quest. Fourth term made us realise we were almost at the end. The end of a year we had approacheo with trepidation and excitement. Our social with St Bernard’s proved to us that there is a time when girls are bigger than boys, but also that the days of boys asking girls to dance are definitely over.

We welcomed the new Year 7s into our school on Orientation Day and perhaps found it quite hard to remember that not so long ago we really were that small. Our Christmas Mass and final Assembly made us realise how special and wanted we are in our College community.

A special thanks to everyone who made 2001 the wonderful beginning that it was especially to the homeroom teachers, Mr Michael Coleman, Ms Luisa Erzetic, Mrs Carla Godoy, Mrs Mary Hennessy, Mrs Cheryl Kerin, Mr Michael Timms and Mr Greg Vanin who put much time and effort into ensuring the happiness and wellbeing of the girls. he 2001 academic year has been a year of consolidation for the English Faculty following the publication of the revised Study Design and the reorganisation of courses by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority in 2000, Teachers have completed the task of rewriting all course documents to meet the new requirements and ensure that students at Ave Maria are presented with an English syllabus that is relevant, interesting and that fits the relevant guidelines. The entire English syllabus is now available for all teachers, making it easier to ensure that there is consistency across all classes, and continuity from one year level to the next. This has been a major achievement and I would like to acknowledge the effort made by all English teachers to bring this about.

T

The Flying Bookwork Theatre Company, which has become something of a fixture at Ave Maria, returned in Term 3. As has been the case on every other occasion that they have visited Ave Maria, they impressed the Year 9 and 10 students with their ability to bring Shakespeare’s work to life.

Another visitor, who says that he always looks forward to returning to Ave Maria, was poet Myron Lysenko. Following the success of Mr Lysenko’s visit last year, our Librarian, Ms Terry Callery arranged a second series of workshops for students during Book Week. MRS MADELEINE MATTAROZZI LAMING

English Coordinator

We have been fortunate this year to have had some distinguished visitors to our English classrooms. In Term One, the noted South Australian writer, David Harris was our Writer in Residence for a week. Mr Harris, who has published a number of novels and stories for children and young adults, worked extensively with the Year 10 students on improving their creative writing skills. He also conducted a Masterclass in writing to the Year 12 students. Mr Harris shared the benefits of his experience as a short story writer, showing the students many ways to improve their work prior to the Writing Task SAC.

Later in the year, the Year 12 students had another valuable opportunity to improve the quality of their work. Mr Tony Ghosthawk, a member of the Sioux Nation, talked about his experiences in the American mid-west and the background to Montana 1948, one of the most popular novels on the Year 12 syllabus.

Beautiful exhibitions of Carnevale masks earlier in the year and then Topeng masks displayed attention to detail and the intricacies of forms of entertainment not known to us in Australia. We welcomed Masquerade Productions who performed some very cheeky skits presenting some of the traditional Carnevale characters introduced by Goldoni in 18th Century Italian literature.

Pak Soepri Soehodo's visit to the College was also very intriguing. Whilst we marvelled at his dance skills we were equally impressed with his presentation on the traditional wayang kulit puppets and we thoroughly enjoyed learning to use the anklung. No one was more impressed than I when I heard our students playing together as an Anklung

Student achievements were highlighted at the College's Open Day and at the annual Arts Festival held on the 28th of November. This was a rewarding evening and everybody was able to appreciate student work in an exciting exhibition style setting. This year we also held our inaugural Evening of VCE Artistic Excellence exhibition that displayed dynamic Year 12 work from the areas of Drama, Media, Studio Arts, Technology and Visual communication and design. The display was in the Hall and we received not only a packed house, but also very positive support and feedback from members of the College community. The P & F provided refreshments, which gave the evening the feeling of a true opening night. Many of our Year 12 students have been successful in obtaining interviews with tertiary institutes for further study in the Arts. I wish them well in their creative endeavors and would like to thank Ms Emma Hawkins for her time in assisting students with organising their presentations for these interviews. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Raelle Kelly (Year 12 - 2000) who was shortlisted for the top Arts exhibition held in May this year. This was a magnificent achievement when one considers the number of talented students that exist in Victoria. Even though she was not successful in making it to the final exhibition, to be shortlisted is a really great honour for her and the College.

Eden Sanz Year 10

Thank you to Sally Piskuric, our Arts captain for her personal and creative input this year and also congratulations to her as we have selected her painting triptych as the student exhibition piece to hang in the stairwell for 2002.

Next year will bring many new concepts and in particular exciting technology advances in the area of Media and Visual communication. This blended with the many other new developments; displays and processes will no doubt bring another dimension into the Visual Arts area. Finally I would like to thank the following staff for their help, support, commitment and constant hardwork in 2001: Performing Arts: Ms Pauline Cutajar, Ms Rosanna Fimiani, Ms Ruth Paterson, Ms Louise Sharpe and Mr Michael Coleman. MUSIC

DRAMA

2001 has been a very exciting year for Music at Ave Maria College. There have been many new developments in the area of course design and implementation of practical class activities through the use of CSFIt and new technology packages. Our students have been privy to some very exciting music software, which have strongly developed their compositonal skills and skills in the area of note recognition and aural training.

The Drama department has been an absolute hub of energy and excitement this year. Students have had a multitude of opportunities to show case their talents both within and outside of the Drama classroom.

Drama students performed at Open Day, the VCE Excellence night, the Arts Festival, the Year 12 Retreat Days and various Mass celebrations. On each occasion we were reminded of the outstanding calibre of Drama students that Ave Maria College are blessed to have.

Our Year 7s experienced a wonderful performance from Guest Artist Victoria Imber who presented Voice Box", a very entertaining look at how we use our voices in every day life and also how it is used by singers all over the world. Our Year 10s experienced a fantastic excursion to the musical "Mamma Mia" and were blown away by this brilliant musical comedy.

In addition to this Drama students were given the opportunity to experience and learn from observing a range of professional performances. MS PAULINE CUTAJAR

Drama Coordinator

The Instrumental Program continued to expand this year with the introduction of Brass tuition and Junior Band for beginners in Year 7 and 8. Many students involved in the Instrumental Program performed at the Soiree on 18th September. Performances included The Stage Band, Choir and Rock band and many solo and duets items from very brave students. The night was a huge success and ended with a very entertaining Staff Act "A Tribute to Abba". Many of our students undertook practical AMEB examinations this year and are to be congratulated for their excellent results.

science The Science Department's vision has been to create a safe learning environment, whereby the students were encouraged to take risks in questioning, designing and testing their current understanding. We have aimed to provide various pedagogical activities and promoted each individual student to take ownership of their learning process; developing skills like being able to interpret, analyse, apply, evaluate and synthesise various scientific concepts. Your mind is in here, along with mine.

When we read the words on this paper, the Vidian Report on Science becomes our perception. The students and staff responses to science and what they have enjoyed about it, clearly illustrates how much alike we are and how closely linked the science department are, to work with the students. The staff are continuously developing curriculum material that stimulate the students to develop a love for learning.

The department looks forward to 2002, when the Science laboratories will be completely refurbished. Careful planning and designing of the rooms has been considered to allow for maximum safety, large work stations tor experimentation and a new computer laboratory to balance our curriculum with integrated learning technologies. As we reflect upon the following staff and student responses, we hope that it becomes clear of the commitment and positive direction our department has made for 2001. MRS LYDIA ROPER-WILLIS

Science Coordinator

As a child I was fascinated by the past and wanted to be an archaeologist. When I was in the secondary part of my education I was taught by a nun who had been a pharmacist for several years before entering the convent. She inspired in me an interest in Chemistry and Physics. Originally I was doing Pharmacy but due to family circumstances I moved to Geelong and studied Applied Chemistry. I worked for CSIRO for 10 years as a Chemist and then moved to Ave Maria College. I do love the Science but often wonder what it would be like to be an archaeologist and make wonderful discoveries. MRS ANN MARIE BRASHER

Why did I study in the Science Area? Whenever I asked questions as a child I got interesting answers from my parents. They always took the time to talk about things and they never gave me dolls, I remember, only active sort of toys.

Most of my time in science was just doing; never really understanding what it was all about. I was caught up in the woman's movement where women were encouraged to enter the scientific world. "Opening your Options" was what they called it. Funny how the string of life pulled me along. I wasn't interested in science until I came across a teacher by chance, who taught science as a philosophy and demonstrated how life is sustained on this planet through a series of interconnecting food webs. Our delicate needs of life. Learning became my responsibility and I directed the focus of my studies with a holistic approach to the biological sciences. MRS LYDIA ROPER-WILLIS

SCIENCE

"This year in science we enjoyed doing experiments. We liked these because they were a fun way of learning, a few of these experiments were the shails, water experiments, beans, magnets, friction balls and the bubble competition. We also enjoyed watching Gorillas in the Mist and chatting about lucid dreaming. Another thing we enjoyed was dissection of electrical appliances, but most of all we enjoyed our discussions." JENNA AND DANIELA

YEAR

SCIENCE

Science has been very interesting. In Term 1 we learnt about lens, mirrors reflection, rainbows and eye disorders and had many experiments, such as dissecting a cow's eye, to further our understanding. In Term 2 we learnt about hormones and started learning about function of the human body. We also looked at the brain and Mr Dunlop dissected a sheep's brain for us to see the different parts look like. In Term 3 we continued in human reactions especially on reflexes and the nervous system. We also studied plant responses and performed many experiments to give us a hands on view of plants response to stimuli. In term four we did forensic science which would probably be the most popular topic we've done this year. We learnt about how evidence from crime scenes are analyzed and how science is a key element in solving crimes. We had a science workshop where people from the CSIRO came and gave us a chance to do experiments that are used in real crimes and to try to solve the murder of Nathan Bloom. Overall science this year has been really great and I hope it's this good next year! FIONA

At secondary school I was not a "natural" essayist. My writing was usually too brief to bring a smile to the face of an English or History teacher. In "these days" if you were good at Maths you usually ended up in the Maths/Science stream.

However, I am eternally grateful for this. My life as a scientist and then teacher has been extremely interesting and rewarding. There were many careers to choose from and plenty of opportunities for further study to keep me out of trouble. MRS LESLEY ADAMS

SCIENCE

The year 10 science “Earth, Universe and Life" classes went on an excursion to CERES in Brunswick to study the human impact on the Merri Creek River System, To evaluate the Merri Creek's health we did chemical, physical and biological tests. We tested for pollution, wildlife and the general health of the water system. We also got to see photographic maps of the past Merri Creek. We saw how the present ecosystem has evolved from when the area used to be the city dump. We listened to how the Merri Creek was slowly regaining its foliage and how it was slowly bringing the wildlife back, especially the Kingfisher bird. We all gained knowledge on the effect of human impact on the environment and how to keep our waterways clean.

PSYCHOLOGY

Psychology is a mind-opening subject. Throughout the course of the year the students were informed of many different and interesting topics, the students learnt about structure of the brain, analysing the behaviour of children, how to write up case studies and many more fascinating concepts. Although a lot of work is involved in units 1 and 2 of this subject, at the same time it is an enjoyable class, which is recommended by each student that completed Year 11 Psychology." MATHEMATICS 2001 has been a challenging and exciting year for the Mathematics faculty. Both staff and students have been involved in a wide range of activities.

Early in the year the Year 7 students visited the Melbourne Zoo Education Unit. They spent a beautiful sunny day investigating the mathematics used in keeping various exhibits on an everyday basis. The girls were able to interact with a number of animals on a very personal basis.

all the students who participated in this annual event. This year eleven students were awarded a Distinction and fifty eight students achieved a Credit.

I would like to thank all of the students and staff who contributed mathematically to Ave during the year. MRS LYNDAL MCLEAN

Mathematics Coordinator

The Year 8 students enjoyed a session with World of Maths. This involved a collection of hands on problem solving activities. The girls worked their way around a series of stations, solving real life, challenging problems.

To help us celebrate Maths Week, Rod Quantock spoke to the Year 9 and 10 students about the history of mathematics. With his twisted sense of humour and lively presentation he led the girls through many of the exciting and entertaining mathematical events of our past. He also brought to life the quirky nature and often bizarre lives of some famous mathematicians.

Our Year 7 and 9 students participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition. We would like to congratulate Year 8 Maths Workshop - Stefanie Leatch, Samantha Nguyen

he year 2001 has been very challenging for the

T

SOSE Department, which began with some intensive course writing based on the new CSF

II document. To correctly implement the new

course outlines innovative and exciting activities were experienced by students at all levels thanks to the

dedication of our staff. The Year 8s enjoyed a morning listening to Alan Parker who spoke to them on his

experiences in Antarctica. They were entertained by his

slides containing picturesque scenes and animal life.

The Year 9s paid a visit to Ballarat as part of their study,

Gold Rushes of the 1850s. They were encouraged to

imagine Ballarat as a scene of hundreds of men swarming between pits and tents. Trees, grass, soil

uprooted. A frenzy of rocking cradles, heaps of mud, clay and slush-a ravaged landscape. Another activity undertaken by the year 9's was a trip to the Moonee

Valley Council to visit the chambers and have a delicious

morning tea with the Mayor himself. Corinne, Amanda and Bianca as part of a project on Local Government

organized this.

The year 10 Geography class attended Angelsea and Torquay to study natural land formations while the year

10 Twentieth Century History class toured the Immigration museum. Eight students from Year 9 & 10 were given the opportunity to attend a student forum at the Melbourne Town Hall to listen to a diverse range of

political party members to discuss their platforms. The girls experienced lively debate and a coulourful protest all part of living in a democracy.

Many VCE Legal Studies, Economics and Accounting

students attended lectures run at the University of Melbourne to assist them with exam strategies.

We wish Mr Lanny De Almeida all the very best for his

technology TECHNOLOGY As the end approaches for my first year at Ave, I would like to acknowledge the wonderful support

and help I have received from all the staff in the Technology department. My first impressions of

my new school remain fresh, with the students being very friendly and eager to learn and adapt

to my particular teaching style and the wonderful

resources available to all at Ave. Over the year, I have witnessed many interesting, well-developed

and well-produced pieces of work from the three areas of technology to which I have asked Ms Antonia Caridi, Mrs Ruth Johnson and Ms Amanda Nunn to address in the following articles.

Ave Maria College participated in the 2001 Australian Schools Computer Studies

Competition. 109 Ave girls sat the paper on

Wednesday 1 August and over 78 000 students from Australia and New Zealand participated overall. Students had to solve problems involving

navigating the Internet, producing Web pages, word processing, using spreadsheets and

databases, operating a computer, programming, cabling and networks, dealing with viruses and

designing a presentation. This year, students had the choice of Computer Science and Computer Literacy options, allowing them to apply knowledge to specialised areas such as Certificates of Distinction Computer Studies - Jacinta Nash, Fiona Tran - Year 9

technology TEXTILES This year once again we have had a very strong Textiles Department with 22 students in Design and Technology. All production work was completed to a very high standard. This work was showcased on Tuesday the 23rd of October at an 'Evening of Artistic Excellence' in the College hall. Earlier this year the senior Textiles Year 10,11 and 12s attended the annual Gown of the Year Fashion Parade, to see what professional designers are doing within the Industry. At the luncheon many 'Sheer' fabrics in 'Black and White' were presented. Three girls from Year 10 chose to participate in the design competition, and while they did not gain any prizes, they all explained what a worthwhile experience it had been. These designs and the Year 11 work were showcased at a School Assembly in November. I thank Mrs Omand, and Mrs Johnson for their continued support this year as Junior Textiles teachers. MS AMANDA NUNN

FOOD

TECHNOLOGY

Hospitality has again been an important focus in Food classes. During the first Semester there was much chatter and excitement when the Year 10 girls entertained staff at Morning Tea while in the second semester changed their focus and invited staff to a sitdown 'two-course lunch' which they had planned, prepared and served. Classes at Year 10 and Year 11 prepared 'pass around' food for College functions guests at both the Parent Forum and the Arts Festival enjoyed the tasty products of careful planning and preparation and creative presentation. At all functions the food served was a credit to the girls skills and imagination. Admirable waiting skills have also been on display at each of these events. Classes at every level have been varied. Year 8 have been learning to look after their health and nutrition by studying the Healthy Diet Pyramid and producing food to assist and develop their skills relating to this. Year 9 have investigated a wide variety of new products on the market related to foods from Europe and the Pacific Rim, thus experiencing a lot of new taste sensations. Year 10 have also researched foods from different cultures and produced a meal of their own choice as well as learning the skills associated with decorating a rich fruit cake. Years 11 and 12 be involved many independent productions relating to set Design Briefs that have tested their skills and imagination. Recently, much laughter and frivolity emanated from G7 when a group of staff members became involved in making and decorating their own Christmas Cakes. A feeling of anticipation is in the air as we look forward to the refurbishment of the Food Technology area in the near future - an exciting time awaits us as we say 'goodbye' to the old and tired green laminex. student AMADORI

I came to Ave Maria College from Bologna, Italy to improve my English

and to have a new experience. At the beginning it was a bit difficult because

I had different habits and I couldn't understand English. School was

really different. I could not go home at 1.00 pm and I had to wear a

uniform. However I really have had a good time here. I will come back to

Australia. I'm gonna miss you and your school.

Ciao e Grazie GIULIA AMADORI 11H

CARRICK

Life in an American public school is shall I say different, besides the fact there are 2300 students, and only Grades 9 to 12, no set lunch or recess, things are quite interesting here. I have done the "American" things, seen the cheerleaders, gone to the football game, and been "tardy". The main difference is the pace of the school. Things run very fast and if you don't keep up, you will never stay on track. The social aspect alone is great. Almost all my friends can drive, which means we do a lot more than going to the Mall and the movies. We go to the game (football), shoot pool and just the other night I went on a scavenger hunt all over the city.

My school, Tailwood, is a school full of pride. Most schools are very sport orientated, with great emphasis on how they perform both academically and athletically. Schools have a lot of school pride, and if you go to Tailwood, you are proud of it, if you go to any other school you are proud of that as well, it's the cool thing.

Another thing about school life here is, no uniform, I get to wear casual clothes every day, without having to pay, but sometimes this can become a very daunting task the night before.

Overall life in America is very different to what life is like in Australia. Most of the time I think I am trapped on the set of Dawson's Creek because that is what it's like. America is a nice place to visit, but I would prefer Australia any day. FROM NICOLE CARRICK OF YEAR 10
