PROJECT/ PLANNING

Throughout this project, I will be working as an indivdual in collaboration with Douglas, Bec and Ruth, from Douglas and Bec. I will be required to design and innovative lamp or object that is made primarily from New Zealand pine. I need to create an orginal, inventive and beautifully refined item that represents the best of artisan design. My item needs to be light, elegant and reflect the best of homegrown materials, the design must also be simple, timeless and reflect my aspiration to be an internationally competitive designer. To help with design planning and design processes, Bec and Ruth will make weekly Thursday visits to our studio throughout the brief to give feedback and answer any questions. A final prototype is required to be carefully presented in the studio space by 9.00am Thursday 13th June, alongside a verbal presentation to sell the product. Also a Project Process Portfolio will be sent to Shane in PDF format by the above date. Sucessful final prototypes will be exhibited in collaboration with Douglas at Bec at BLOC and/or online.

MATERIAL RESEARCH

Bec from Douglas and Bec, came to visit for the first time and she brought in some items. Bec came around and spoke to everyone individually and she gave me some really good websites to look at to get some key ideas. One of her suggestions were to just make a who lot of items that could be sold as a trio and then refine them down. She also suggested something that could be put together and used and also be taken apart and used, She was very inspirational and helpful. Bec also brought in some of the key things she likes and sells the most. Her idea of design is simple, iable, and valued. Along bringing in some items she sells, she also brought in some palets of material that are commonly used throughout her products. This was helpful in guiding me towards a colour palet, as after all I am designing something that could be potentially sold within her store, so it make sense to use similar colouring and thought process. I had a look around home to see what I could find, and I found a few things that I could play around with, my next step for that is taking apart the lamp, so I can see how it is wired and how it actually works. I also then need to go to a hardware store and purchase some more materials I can play around with.

13

CREATIVITY & EXPLORATION

Experimenting with rope being wrapped around object to give a different effect of contrast. I really like the look of the white rope wrapped around the black cord in the first image. The contrasting of colours really appeal to the eye and add value to the objeact. The same with the last image, I really like the contrast between the white rope and the light coloured plywood. Not sure what it is about the look of it, but I think I may need to investigate and explore that futher.

14

CREATIVITY & EXPLORATION

After experimenting with some of the materials I found around home, I decided to make a trip to Mitre 10 to see what I could find to play around with. I got some assorted bolts and a dynabolt. I really liked the weight of these bolts, and I thought that I could somehow incorporate wealth into the weight just like Bec does. I also brought some hose adaptors because Bec mentioned that one of the lights they make actually use plumbers parts. Lastly I got some 4mm cord and 3mm rope plypropylene. In the pictures above I was trying to experiment with the items and see what combinations worked well together and what complimented each other. The first two images remind me of the solid paper weights that Bec brought in, but I need to find a better way of using the weight rather than for paper. The last image reminds me of a candle stick holder, and looks really rustic and dense.

15

GENERATING MODELS

Jotting down an idea for a light I had, after experimenting with the rope. I thought that I could combined and contrast material as an open lamp shade. Possibly experimenting with clear acrylic and cutting a pattern into the acrylic and shaping it to make a sculptured and detailed lamp shade and contrasting it with a coloured rope that could hold the two ends together. The light could hang through the middle so the bulb would be exposed at the bottom.

After visiting Mitre 10 and getting some items I could play around with, I found that the garden hose 3-way coupler was quite intresting to encorperate into a light. I figured that I could design a two way pendant light. Thinking about the way it could be portrayed, I could get a brass garden hose fitting and have it looked upon as wealthy., or having it multi coloured for a childs bedroom. This could also work out for a childs room because they way it would sit portrays a childs mobile.

16

CONCEPT TESTING

Heading in the direction of a light, I started to playing around with my materials again, I figured I could try to encorperate some of the bolts I got from Mitre 10, This adds a extra elements that makes the products look more valuable and expensive. Considering what Bec said about one of her brass lights being made from plumbers parts, it inspired me to look at items that are parts from around and inside the house, and creating a product that other will love and value and be useful, such as a light.

17

CONCEPT TESTING

After talking to Ruth and Bec about my idea of using garden hose parts, they didnt seem very intrested in a worthless material such as plastic, and after trying to get some inspiration from Shane, I decided to try and myake the hose fitting shape from wooden dowel. Finally heading up to the workshop, I tested out the idea of making the garden hose fitting out of wood using the Lathe to get the nice smooth and round shape. I quiet like the shape they are and uising the Lathe was a new experience for me. The next step is to cut the ends into the correct angles, drill the hole through the middle to allow a cord go through, and to find a long lasting way to keep all the other pieces connected. I also need to test another concept I have in mind, and purchase some more dowel.

18

CONCEPT TESTING

One of my concepts is to completely imitate the plastic garden hose, but making it out of wooden pieces. In the pictures above, I just glued the pieces together beacuse it was just a trial run. But knowing that the angles fit together I can continue to investigate this idea. Other thoughts I have, was combining copper or brass rings on the ends of each piece to replace the rubber. This idea was inspired by all of Douglas and Bec’s work, and I think either materials will compliment the light coloured wood.

19

CONCEPT TESTING

After making the garden hose fitting out of wood, I put my skills to practise and drew it up on Solid Works. Showing an exploded image of how the three components fit together. These ones are slightly out of scale, but while concept testing, I decided to test it on the computer.

20

CONCEPT TESTING

The above images are my first idea. The design is an exact replica of the garden hose fitting. I have also added some gold paper that sits in one of the thr cut outs. My idea for this would be to have either copper or brass rings to replace the rubber rings on the plastic fitting. This idea is a two bulb ligtht concept using a raw wooden material, it has a plain design with simple shape. It is a replica of a garden hose part, could include copper or brass rings and is a handmade product.

21

CONCEPT TESTING

After making the first idea, I had another idea, which was having each piece slip on to a ‘triangle’ shapped frame. This idea could also include the copper or brass rings. This idea is a three bulb light using a raw wooden material, it has a plain design with simple shape. It has a ‘slotting in’ effect, it is a replica of a garden hose part, could include copper or brass rings and is a handmade product.

22

TESTED MATERIALS

American Beech

Macrocarpa Salu Salu - Fijian Rimu Fijian Kauri All sourced from a family friend and BBS Timbers on Henderson Valley Road

23

CONCEPT TESTING

After presenting my idea to Bec and the class, Bec suggested that I make the garden hose fixture a bit bigger and really think about the type of lights I would want to use. She also suggested have the lights on a downlward angle and play around with some other timbers. Afterwards I was able to source some other timbers from a family friend and BBS Timber. I started to play around with American Beech, which I was able to get an off cut from BBS Timber. I really like this timber, It has a really nice medium colouring and the way the grain flows looks really nice. I enlarged the scale slightly and ran out of material, but I was able to turn two parts on the Lathe. After speaking with Shane, He gave me the idea to research alt and pepper shakers, and suggested it to be a really nice and refined idea and a way to encorperate the brass or copper in a clever but subtle way. So my next step is to go back to the research stage and work out how I would get the salt and pepper in and out of my three way design. Also I need to find a place to source some brass or copper.

24

PRODUCT RESEARCH

25

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

After much debate with myself, I have decided to continue on with the salt and pepper shaker idea. I have decided to combine a metal and timber, the two I have choosen to combine are American Beech and Stainless Steel. The resaon I have chosen to use these two materials together, is because I think that the colour of the American beech and the Stainless Steel really compliment eachother from a visual point of view. I really think that the American beech is a beautiful piece of timber, and have a really nice grain running through it. I think that if I use the Stainless Steel in a subtle but effective way it will make that design really appealing to the eye.

26

FINISHES RESEARCH

After speaking with Bec and Shane about the finishes I was going to put on the American Beech to prevent stains and marks, I researched and looked into the options that were avaiable. The reason for that being “Briwax Oils penetrate, feed, and harden the fibres of bare wood, giving a durable water-resistant surface not prone to chipping or flaking. Use them on kitchen cupboards, bench tops, tables, chairs, floors, windows and doors, or any other wooden surface...Danish Oil gives a matte finish. (http://www.briwax.co.nz/Oils.php) I noticed when I used the Briwax it slightly changed the colour of the timber, and turned it slightly darker, but also added a nice matte finish to it. I also looked into Lindseed oil, which is the image on the far right, It gave my design a lovely darker tint to it and I personally thought it was a nice look.

27

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Testing out my final idea and processs with Macrocarpa. In this process, I needed to lathe my timber to the correct measurement of 50mm. I then cut a 20mm cap off and drilled 60mm down the base at 30mm. To get the lip on the lid, I needed to put the lid back onto the lathe and round that down, to finish off the lid, I drilled 3, 3mm holes the whole way down. Lastly I needed to lathe into the base, to make sure that the stainless steel ring fit around the outter edge, but also remained flush against the body.

28

FINAL PRODUCTION

Before I started producing my final, I mapped out a plan and drew myself some diagrams, so that I could keep checking back at the correct measurements. I then needed to make sure I had all the materials I need, Finally deciding on using Stainless steel metal rings with some rubber O-rings and European beech as my timber. The reason I went with the European beech instead of the American beech, was because I preferred the medium dark timber with the stainless steel, and I went with the similar timber because the grain on the timber I got is really lovely. The rubber O-rings are put in place to suction the lid so that it doesnt fall off into your dinner plate when you shake it. The reason for it even having O-rings was to be a way to fill up the shaker when need be. My first step was to cut the timber to the correct lengths then spin it on the lathe to get the correct diameter for the circular body shape.

29

FINAL PRODUCTION

After lathing the body and lids, I needed drill down the middle off the body to allow salt and/or pepper to be held inside. I also had to put the lids pack on the lathe so that I could lathe out a groove for the O-ring to sit in. I had to be very careful with the dimaensions so that it all fit perfectly. I then cut a 30 degree angle off the end to allow a nice angle for the bodies to sit on a flat surface. I then put everything together.

23

STORY TELLING

My client is a young house wife and passionate gardener and cook who loves the outdoors. She needs an object that represents her love for raw materials, the outdoors and flavor. This object needs to be simple, beautiful and used with ease.

31

FINAL CONCEPT

‘S&P Dispenser’

32

OVERALL

Overall I think that my design is a fumctional and fesible object. Its materials are contrasted well in my personal opinion. I think that my object could have been done in a cleaner manner if I was able to access more or different materials. I did what I could with my skills, but I think that my design could have developed further. But overall I like the timber I used, It has a lovely grain, and i like the shape of it.
