The work in this portfolio is carefully selected examples to best represent my design process based on the model in fig. 01 from the Design Methods Toolbox. I will use a few selected design methods to create a product that best reflects the brief given and my targeted audience.

1.0 PROJECT PLANNING

INTRODUCTION

Throughout the 1st stage of this project I will develop 3 innovative design concepts for my target user,, before selecting a final concept for further developing and refinement. The ‘just do it’ project with inspire me and includes involvement with established outdoor recreational businesses who have expressed some interest with the concept of targeting specific user groups. Throughout the 2nd stage of this project I will be required to use critical reflection and decision making to enable targeted design development to occur, before taking my chosen concept through 3 iteration cycles. I should take a fresh and experimental design approach for the specialist sports and recreation sector. I may ask myself; How might someone protect communication devices at sea? Consider the elements; will my product be fully waterproof, with appropriate support and construction? The communication of the technical/ design information is also very important, people want to know why and how a specifically designed product will benefit them.

I did a think-do-say-feel for each of this six sports I started off looking at. These will help me have an empathy towards a persona I may have. It also helped me think further about the sport and how people may feel or what they might do, think or say.

2.0 RESEARCH SUMMARY

THINK - DO - SAY - FEEL

Starting off in this project, I mapped out a few brainstorms to help me really understand what type of sports and equipment was out there, and what I generally thought happened with these sports. Throughout my life, sports were a very important part of my childhood, but I had only every really stuck to a few sports and really gone after them. So these brainstorms were a real eye opener to see what else was actually out there and available to people.

EXISTING PRODUCTS RESEARCH

I decided to make up a questionnaire to hand out to a few people who I know are very active in sports. Trying to choose a particular parth to go, I asked the kind of questions that would get them thinking about what they would use and what they find a problem. Safety wasn’t really an issue for any of my quaestiones, because they all participate in sports as a group. I also asked a couple of friends on face book, as they are normally quite hard to get in contact with due to their busy sports orientated life style. With theses friends, I was looking at a running point of view, a fitness boxing point of view and also a netball point of view. With the netball side, there really wasn’t much feedback as it a fast paced sport and the only places I could look at were the injury side. So manly looking at the running and fitness boxing. I feel like this will be the better path to go down, as I also personally participate in both of these sports. Theses two sports can easily be combined as you tend to do a lot of running during the fitness boxing classes.

2.0 RESEARCH SUMMARY

QUESTIONNAIRE RESEARCH

My mission is to provide a type of accessory for necessary gym items to be transported in. This accessory must be easy to carry, feminine, able to hold a drink bottle and have sufficient amount of space for clothing. My idea must represent the indented user and allow for a quick and easy access whilst participating in the chosen sport.

2.0 RESEARCH SUMMARY

MISSION STATEMENT

After being a little bit behind, I jotted down two ideas I had in a drawing sense. I decided to go with a sport that I currently participate in, and really enjoy. After interviewing a few people, I thought about what I personally would like to see within this sport, alongside what the people I interviewed would like to see. One of the main comments I had were that the wraps were terribly uncomfortable and really didn’t last very long. The material seemed tight when first put on but throughout the boxing session the material seemed to stretch and move out of place, making it very uncomfortable underneath the boxing glove. Another thought I had was a specialised boxing gear bag for all types of boxers. I found carrying my boxing gloves and focus pads in the bags they are sold in, are really awkward to handle. Whilst holding all other sufficient items, I seem to be dropping my belonging very often, which can be frustrating. I also noticed, I tend to forget item, due to not having enough hands or areas to put these items.

3.0 CREATIVITY & EXPLORATION

DRAWINGS

After being a little reluctant to get back on the sewing machines since a bad experience back in high school, I finally bit the bullet and did it. Findings some material that was lying around in the studio I decided I better make my first concept - a hand wrap. My idea for this wrap to have more padding across the knuckles and a more supportive material for the wrist, as when the material moves on the previous wraps it becomes less supportive. My second idea is to create a specialised gear bag. In the second concept I just played around with a zip to get myself familiarised. I definitely felt better after playing around with these two ideas and getting on the sewing machine again. I don’t know what I was afraid of.

3.0 CREATIVITY & EXPLORATION

SEWING PRACTISE

Exploring boxing gear bags to see what is currently out on the market, and what will make my bag appealing to others. I need to start creating ideas and mock-ups to show form and shape. Then using specific design exercises to pick my final forma and make it. It must be different to other bags and have sufficient amount of compartment for a female boxer.

3.0 CREATIVITY & EXPLORATION

PERSONA

Exploring the possibilities of a structure that will hold exactly what needs to be held in order to help the target user transport their workout gear and personal items to classes. Exploring other ways of carrying this bag, and what the target user may actually need from the bag to work with the users lifestyle. Meaning do they run from class to their home - so does the bag need to be positioned as a backpack. Or does the user simply walk to and from their car to the class - in that case how does the user prefer to carry their bag? Also in these images I was exploring, having the boxing gear or shoes places in and underneath compartment. As the user may not own their own boxing gear - or they may come from work and need a place to store their work clothing.

3.0 CREATIVITY & EXPLORATION

STRUCTURE EXPLORATION

I went down to Stoplight real quick and picked up some really cheap material and a zip. I decided that since I really haven’t actually made something before I better start practicing. Especially putting a zip in, because my concept has zips that need to be functional. Overall was a success for what I wanted to do.

4.0 CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

PUTTING IN A ZIP

Exploring a certain design for my aimed target consumer, being a female boxer, I’m looking at a style of bag that will be very familia, but can also be used for other sports or other times. Having a shoe/boxing glove compartment at the bottom of the bag could come in handy for any women, especially one coming from a busy job and needs somewhere to store clothing. A coin pouch on the inside will be a definite, for change or any other bits and bobs the target buyer may have.

4.0 CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

DESIGN EXPLORATION

I spent a lot of time deciding on the materials I wanted to make my final concept out of and choosing all the necessary bits to go with it. I could get any black material so I decided to go for a design that would be a little more colourful that could be used for absolutely anything - sport wise or overnight. I went with a canvas - so that it would be stronger and hold the bags shape better. I went with a purple lining and orange zips.

5.0 CONCEPT TESTING

FINAL MATERIALS

Because my design is different to others, There was no available pattern to cut my material from - so I grabbed so brown paper and made my own patterns, making sure I allowed for seam lines and zip inputs. Firstly cutting my canvas from my patterns than cutting the lining to match. I started from the bottom of the bag and decided to work my way upwards.

5.0 CONCEPT TESTING

PATTERN CUTTING

Finally being able to get straight into it, I put all four sides together for the bottom part. Making sure they all lines up and were all the same length and size. (Sewing the same amount for the seams.) I also put a pocket in to allow the target user to have a space for certain personal items that they might want quick and easy access too. This pocket is sewn down the middle to give the target user two smaller pockets.

PUTTING THE BOTTOM IN Sewing the bottom to the four sides was much easier than expected, and I was able to do it quicker than expected. Just double checking that there were no holes or gaps, I ironed the seam allowances down.

5.0 CONCEPT TESTING

PUTTING THE BOTTEM SIDES TOGETHER

Reinforcing all of the seams with a zig zag stitch so that none of the edges of the canvas frey and make the bag turn into a mess - as this fabric freys super easily,

BOTTOM PART After sewing all the sides together with the bottom - my bag is starting to take its shape and look like a bag.

5.0 CONCEPT TESTING

REINFORCEMENT

Sewing the lining for the bottom on the bag was very much the same as sewing the canvas outter sides and bottom together. The only difference and downfall with the lining in that its such a slippery material, and caused me a few problems and a bit of unpicking - but I got there in the end.

ZIP-LOCK POUCH ON THE INSIDE Apart of my original design idea, was to allow a few compartments for feminine necessities, Sewing this little pouch proved to be very fiddly and annoying due to the slippery fabric of the lining. Practising inserting the zip in my development stage came in handy here trying to make the zip as invisible as possible, as not many people want it to be seen. Very good as a coin pouch.

5.0 CONCEPT TESTING

LINING FOR THE BOTTOM

Finally reaching the point where I can sew the lining and outer shell together, pinning it all together just to make sure that it the fabric doesn’t slip. Also having to make sure that the inside pocket is on the correct side, because the outside pocket has a particular side to be on - and how to allow for the top part to be sewn on correctly.

CUTTING THE TOP PARTS PATTERN The next step was to cut the pattern out for the second part of the bag (out of the pain green canvas fabric.

5.0 CONCEPT TESTING

SEWING THE LINING AND OUTER SHELL TOGETHER

Sewing in a water bottle pocket into one of the top sides. To allow for an easier access to water. I added a pleat into the pocket so that it could sit as flat as possible when there is no water bottle, but to also sit wide when there is a water bottle.

SEWING THE SIDES TOGETHER Cutting the sides for the tops part of the bag and sewing them together. Then sewing the lining to match, but with a bottom.

5.0 CONCEPT TESTING

WATER BOTTLE POCKET

Sewing the side pocket with some elastic to allow for stretch. Then adding in the set part for the long strap, with a clip.

LINING AND TOP PART Sewing the lining and shell of the top part together. The reinforcing the edges with a zigzag stitch to prevent the edges from fraying.

5.0 CONCEPT TESTING

SIDE POCKET

I then cut the pattern for the flap and sewed the flap doubled sided. I did this to allow the flap to be a bit stronger and less flimsy.

INSERTING ZIPS Inserting the two zips to meet in the middle was much easier than I expected. I tacked the zips down to make sure they were in the right position. Doing this may have taken a little longer, but ensures that the positioning would be correct.

5.0 CONCEPT TESTING

FLAP AND PATTERN

Sewing the zips onto both the bottom and top - then reinforcing the edges with a zigzag stitch.

DOUBLE CHECKING Now that the bag is all sewn together, I need to make sure that nothing is peeping out and everything is sewn together in a tidy way.

5.0 CONCEPT TESTING

DOUBLE ZIPS

Sewing double lines around the top part of the bag, for reinforcement and as a detailing. Creating the boards for the bottom of both parts and stapling them to allow for an easy stitch.

FINAL TOUCHES Sewing on the Velcro for a quick and easy opening of the bag. This is so the user can get in a grab personal items without small and fiddly zips.

FINAL TOUCHES Sewing the straps together and onto the bag. The strap is a comfortable length that sits on the users hip or can be a across-the-body bag. Optional.

5.0 CONCEPT TESTING

FINAL TOUCHES

My design is different to other ‘sports’ bags because of the shape and style. Most sports bags don’t have the option for your shoes or other object (in this case; boxing gloves) that is separate from other items they you may want to refrain for being destroyed. The shape of the bag allows it to sag when its not full, and by doing this, it makes it a lightweight bag for women to carry. My bag is aimed at a female fitness boxer audience who is committed to other sporting activities, her family and the gym. For my targeted audience to feel committed, encouraged and motivated, she needs something to make her busy day-to-day life easier, and that is where my bag comes into good usage. Because of the sizing, shape, and features of my bags design, it becomes the perfect accessory for a women on the go. The bright colouring of the bag makes it seen and unable to miss, hence walking to and from classes/car in the dark with subtle lighting - will make someone feel a little more safe and seen. Features of the bag is what will appeal to the targeted audience. By having the zip unzip both sides and the font allows the targeted audience to open the bottom of the bag right out - allowing a better access to personal items such as shoes or boxing gloves. And the rings allow for an easier grip to make it easier to open, A double pocket on the bottom of the outside - allows the targets audience to have quick and easy access to any stored personal items such as, car keys, money, cellphone . But also on the inside of the top part there is a coin pouch for any use. An elastic pocket on the outside allows a water bottle to be kept separate from any clothing or personal items. And lately the top part is sealed via Velcro to allow a much easier access into the bag and whichever time - as items stored in the top part my need to be available during a class and it is extremely difficult to open a bag with gloves on.

6.0 COMMUNICATION

WHY IS THIS BAG DIFFERENT?

6.0 COMMUNICATION

FEATURES OF THE SPORTS BAG

Bottom pouch for boxing gloves/ shoes.

Inside coin pouch and spacious compartment for clothing/towel.

Outside pocket for phone/keys/money and water bottle pouch

Easy side carry, or optional across-thebody, to even out any additional weight

Double zip, with rings for easy grip and unzips front and both sides.

6.0 COMMUNICATION

I spent a good amount of time documenting the process of this project on wordpress.com. As a final reflection, I found this brief to be quite challenging as spending a large amount of time stuck without inspiration, I wasn’t left with a fair amount of time to develop and test my ideas - which I did say was a personal downfall I needed to work on. After I finally decided on the sport, I tried to think of many things that are revolved around boxing that I could possibly improve. I ended up choosing to alongside a bag, as Lyle guided me against doing hand wraps - due to the medical side of it and that it was only a 6week brief. I decided to go with a design that would be useful to most women, as a few of the women I asked from my own boxing class said they tend to come straight from work - but don’t have a bag big enough for the extra clothing - or a separate compartment to hold their own gloves or shoes. I wanted to make that bag that would make a difference to someone - that may not be a lot but can make somebodies life that little much easier. I needed a bag that wasn’t going to be too heavy when a lot of gear is carried - but also a bag that wasn’t going to be awkward to carry and easily thrown over the shoulder or body. This bag needed a bottom compartment that separated certain items from others - but a bigger top part for bulkier items such as clothing and towels. I opted to keep the water bottle of the outside of the bag to keep everything dry, and although there is a small coin compartment on the inside, there is a pocket on the outside to allow for other personal belongings such as; cellphone, money or car keys. I made the top compartment easy to open with Velcro - as nothing is more frustrating then trying to get your gloves off really quick and open up a bag to get your towel. The bottom compartment was so much of an issue - as anything in there would be before or after use. But making life easier to get things in and out of - By making it a double zip that allows you the option to unzip only one side or both - and both unzip the front and sides leaving the back still attached. By making this bag to fit all the necessary items needed for a fitness boxing class - it reduced having to carry and juggle other bags by having it all in one. It also reduces time and the intended user rushing to the class by being able to fit extra clothing - this includes health, safety and wellbeing for the intended user.
