Universal Design

Universal Design what is it?

1. Equitable Use The design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities. - Provides the same use for all users: identical whenever possible; equivalent when not. - Avoid segregation or stigmatizing any users. - Provisions for privacy, security and safety should be equally available for all users. - making the design appeal to all users.

http://www.extension.org/pages/24193/1:-principle-one:-equitable-use

2. Flexibility in use The design accomodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities. - Provide choice in method of use. - Accomodates right or left-handed access and use. - Facilitates the use’s accuracy and precision. - Provides adaptability to the user’s pace.

Universal Design what is it?

3. Simple and Intuitive Use of the design is easy to understand regardless of the user’s experience, knowledge, language skills or current concentration levels. - Eliminate unnecessary complexity. - Be consistant with user expectations and intuition. - Accomodate a wide range of literacy and language skills. - Arrange information consistant with its importance. - Provide effective prompting and feedback during and after the task is completed.

Universal Design what is it?

4. Percetible Information The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user, regardlessof ambient conditions or the users sensory abilities. - Use different modes (pictorial, verbal, tactile) for redundant presentation of essential information. - Provides adequate contrasts between essential information and its surroundings. - Maximise ‘legibility‘ of essential information. - Differentiate elements in ways that can be described. - Provides capability with a variety of techniques or devices used by people with sensory limitations. http://www.extension.org/pages/24190/4:-principle-four:-perceptibleinformation6

Universal Design what is it?

5. Tolerance for Error The design minimises hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions. - Arrange elements to minimise hazards and errors, most accessible; hazardous elements eliminated, isolated or sheilded. - Provide warnings of hazards and errors. - Provide fail safe features. - Discourage unconsious action in tasks that require vigilance. http://www.extension.org/pages/24189/5:-principle-five:-tolerance-forerror

6. Low Physical Effort The design can be used efficiently and comfortably and with minimal fatigue. - Allow users to maintain a neutral body position. - Use resonable operating forces. - Minimise repetitive actions. - Minimise sustained physical effort.

Universal Design what is it?

7. Size and space for approach and use Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of user’s body size, posture or mobility. - Provide a clear line of sight to important elements for any seated or stanfing users. - Make reach to all components comfortable for any seated or standing user. - Accomodate variations in hand and grip size. - Provide adequate space for the use of assistive devices or personal assistance.

Inclusive Design what is it?

Inclusive design is something, such as a product that is designed and possibly designed around all users, but may not in fact be addressed to that user. There could be a part of the product where somebody with a severe case of arthritis cannot use without causing pain or discomfort. With the majority of the world being able, the population that have disabilities are usally ignored or forgotten. A lot of products these days are designed more universal and special grips or add-ons can be added to items to remove the discomfort and recover the ability to use again.

Recommendations From the OT’s

- Speed of oscillation of brush should be able to be adjusted. This is so that people have control when brushing in sensitive areas. - Colour and different shapes to be used to indicate where the on/off button is located to aid people in discriminating foreground from background. - Ideally brush should oscillate in alldirections as oppose to just left and right. This is so that people with decreased range of movement (ROM) in wrist/arm are able to brush teeth effectively using less movement. - Battery weight should be minimal to aid people with decreased strength. - Changing the material used for the handle so that it is easier to clean and can mould to peoples grip. (if this is possible?). - Charging battery could be made easier by not having to charge it in another room. Battery could be charged with new wireless technology.

Sketches Body Shapes

Curved body with easy to reach and touch buttons, Minimal and uncomplicated with a sturdy strap.

Sketches Charging

Universal?

What is universal about our toothbrush? #1 Equitable use - Curved body - Added strap - ‘Ball-like’ brush

#5 Tolerance for error - Shock resistance (allows for being dropped without breakage)

#2 Flexibity in use - Moulded gel grip for fingers

#6 Low Physical effort - Strap for hand (allows less use of the finger joints)

#3 Simple and Intuitive - One button for all functions - Easily charged (just plug in and put brush ontop) #4 Perceptible Information - Easy to use - Known and looks like an electric toothbrush

#7 Size and shape for use - Regular size for brush in length. - Decreased weight in battery weight and size. - Decreased cylinder sizing. - Charging is space conscious and is regular sizing for easier use.
