Project Introduction
The work in this portfolio is carefully selected examples to best represent my design process based on the model in fig. 01 from the Design Methods Toolbox. I will use a few selected design methods to create a product that best reflects the brief given and my targeted audience.
Li & Fung Houseware Brief
This project is a collaboration between AUT and Matt Williams of LF Products USA. As a class we will undertake a six week project to design, develop and present an innovative design solution for the Jan San market, with possible distribution to US retailer Bed Bath & Beyond. This is an individual and active running project where the top selected designs will be see by US buyers.
Personal Project Goals
Design aim Make cleaning more enjoyable for a range of people (from kids to adult professionals). Design something the combines more than one product to avoid clutter and creating an easier storage option. Apply a human centred design to certain parts of product, making cleaning more enjoyable and comfortable.
Consumer aim Adult professionals Who have a clean and organised home or apartment. Students Who don’t like or have much time to clean but need to keep their personal area clean in the flat. Homemakers/stay at home mums Who enjoys tidying and cleaning but needs a better storage option to ensure a clutter-free home. Physically Impaired Who need a more comfortable cleaning option to allow for certain dysfunctions.

Team Brainstorm
Our first brainstorm was basically looking at what store throughout the US and NZ sell Jan/San products. We also looked at what products are out there and available to consumers. Opportunities and observations were made as well as looking at core demographic users. Most groups had similar information, which didn’t help to bounce ideas around, but this was a great starting point to looking into stores in NZ with Jan/San products.

Kitchen / Bathroom rubbish bins Price range : NZ$5.99 - NZ$80.29 Observations: Located at the back left hand side of the store - in ‘house ware’. Indoor, out door and recycling bins are located in the same area. The rubbish bin ‘for bathrooms’ is a lot smaller than the other bins and are a waste as they don’t hold much. There is a sufficient range of styles with different lid and opening options. Not much colour option in Mitre 10 - typically white, black and steel (Picture from BB&B - Mesh Metal). Huge jump in price from a basic option - to a separating system.

Area of interest: Creating a product that includes a storage solution for more than one product, Category:
Kitchen / Laundry / Bathroom / Toilet
Observations: Although I came across a bin that allows separation of trash, I want to take that concept and design something that can be used also as storage - as there is nothing that allows consumers to do so. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tqab7JPMRe8/UVnkLfGiWcI/ AAAAAAAAGtU/mh_aT7Bz_5c/s640/DSC_0427.JPG
I was most impressed with the Duetto Ecological pedal bin. I was a nice medium to large size, and allows the consumer to have their trash separated. Both inner bins have handles to allow for easy removal. The only two downfalls with this bin is the colour - there is only one colour option and when pushing down on the pedal - sometimes the lid does not come back down. This bin was priced at $80.73 and is made from plastic.

Area of interest: Creating a either a product that includes a storage solution for more than one product, or a more Human Centred designed handle grip and handle length. Category:
Bathroom / Toilet
Observations: Practically all the available toilet brushes are very similar within size, colour and storage. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tqab7JPMRe8/UVnkLfGiWcI/ AAAAAAAAGtU/mh_aT7Bz_5c/s640/DSC_0427.JPG
I was most impressed with the enclosed tidy set toilet brush with a soft grip handle. I was a nice medium size and the holder allowed the brush to be complete enclosed and pop out with a lean to the side. This design made it look a lot more hygienic than the others as well as the soft rubber grip, making it comfortable to handle. The only let down was that it came it a regular white coloured plastic. This brush was priced at $15.98.

Area of interest:
Looking at designing a more human centred design on handle grips and handle lengths to improve or help the physically impaired.
Category:
Kitchen / Bathroom / Indoor / Outdoor
Observations:
Most brushes/brooms/mops have plastic handles that don’t allow a Comfortable grip, so looking for something that can help the impaired. Also looking at removing the constant bending over - there are brooms that have extendable handles - but those are mainly for outdoor brushes.
http://www.freestockphotos.biz/pictures/17/17107/ A+woman+sweeping+her+front+porch.jpg
I wasn’t really impressed with any of the brooms/brushes/mops that I saw out in the retailer store. There was nothing with a rubber grip on the handle - its all plastic or even wooden. It was a huge let down to not see in the wide range I saw, a product that allows for the physically impaired. Most plastic brooms/brushes/mops came in a bright colour. These brooms are valued at $ 33.16.

Researching specific cleaning caddies to get an idea of what is around and what was actually different to my design. I need to be able to show that there is a significant difference to what I will have to offer verses what is on the market currently.
Concept Sketches
Concept sketches for potential handle grips for any scrubbing brush or sponge. Just trying to get a practise for the angle.
Concept Sketches Cont.
Concept sketches for potential handle grips and toilet brush designs. Something that hides the ugly looking original brush, but is more hygienic than what is currently available. I looked at doing something that could suck the bristles back into the handle reducing water going everywhere and becoming a better storage system for it.
Concept Sketches Cont.
Concept sketches for a storage system for items that are often found in the toilet area. Such as toilet brushes, toilet cleaners and toilet sprays. I find these items to clutter the area and are not a nice thing to look at. I thought about combining this storage system onto a rubbish bin which is also often found in the toilet area.
Concept Sketches Cont.
Concept sketches to decide on material usage. Deciding on whether to make my product from Nylon 300D or from a plastic. I must also keep in mind shipping spaces and also the structure of my design. If I lean towards the Nylon material, it could potentially mean that I wont be able to incorporate the toilet brush due to the fact that there will be water involved. I also need to work out attachment details and how it will be able to be used with a range of different rubbish bins.
Research Materials
http://www.ripstopshop.co.uk/Files/88408/ Img/13/45109_polyester_fabric.jpg
http://www.americanplastics.com/images/polyester- http://www.cz.all.biz/img/cz/catalog/40015.jpeg fabric-color-card.jpg
Considering making my rubbish bin caddy idea from a soft material or a polypropylene plastic. I was looking at a polyester so that it will still hold its shape when its sitting in its shape. I was also looking into a design that could possibly be put together and sent as a flat pack, making overseas shipping much more convenient and simpler than having it made from plastic and having unused space. I need to look more into how it would sit on different types of rubbish bins to actually make my idea work.
Research Bag Styles
Having at look at the Crumpler website to get a little bit of inspiration of what I could do to make my caddy look interesting as well as function. Crumpler make all types of bags from polyester and I personally thought that the use of colours and features were a good idea to incorporate into my design idea.
http://www.crumpler.com/AU/Casual-and-Messenger-Bags/Casual-Messenger-Bags.html
Development Sketches
Developing my toilet caddie, trying to figure out some good solutions and designs that best suit what my thought process is. Taking in some inspiration from Crumpler and the bag designs on that website. Now to figure out if my design will fit all shaped rubbish bins or if I need to design a round caddie and a flat surfaced caddie.
Development Dimensions
Finding a regular rectangular shaped rubbish bin and using the dimensions of the bin to create the right sized caddie.
45cm
36cm 45cm
Im thinking along the lines of selling 2-3 sizes (small, medium and large)of the caddie in the rectangular shape - this will allow for different sized bins. Also I will suggest a rounder caddie to cater to the round or oval rubbish bins.
Development Dimensions Cont.

Air spray H: 24cm W: 5.5cm L: 5.5cm

Working out the exact dimensions for products that are commonly found around the home and used in the toilet, or items that are commonly found in the toilet area. Also figuring out the dimensions for the approximate amount of products that are commonly used.
Final Construction
After creating my final design, I made a pattern out of brown card. I left a large seam allowance, as I was unsure how the Polyester fabric would go through the sewing machine I had at home.

Final Product - Other Considerations
SIZES; Three sizes consisting of Small, Medium and Large will be of an option for consumers. Allowing for three approximately sized rubbish bins.
COLOURS; A range of colours will be supplied, to allow consumers to colour coordinate to their personal choice.
VARIATIONS; As there is a wide range of different shaped bins, a circular shaped caddy could also accompany the above rectangle caddy.
ESTIMATED RETAIL PRICE; After calculating cost of materials and labour time, I came up with a fair consumer price between US$15-$25 per caddy.
Final Product - Detailed Features
Adjustable strap with a clip to allow a secure hold. Velcro for a quick and easy detach. Tabs for a secure detach. Flexible fabric making the easy to unfold. Machine washable.
Final Product - Packaging
PACKAGING; Due to the material being lightweight and flexible, as shown in the pictures, my design of a bathroom caddy can be easily folded for shipping purposes. It can also be folded and packaged for in-store selling purposes to allow for extra space for other in-store items.
ADVANTAGES OVER COMPETITORS; After a great amount of research, I found most caddies to be plastic or stainless steel. My caddy has the advantage of be secured around the rubbish bin in the toilet area, in which is commonly found in most households. It is made from a polyester making the fabric machine washable, allowing the consumer to ensure that it is cleaned thoroughly.
Reflection - My findings
I really enjoyed the process of this brief. I was so refreshing and different to all the other briefs I have completed. The entire structure of this paper was great. Working with Li & Fung was a great experience and I really enjoyed this paper. I used my own personal experiences and preferences to find inspiration in designing my final product. The bathroom caddy is designed for someone who likes to keep their toilet cleaning products close by, but doesn’t have space for a cupboard to hide them away in. The caddy attached to a regular rubbish bin, which is commonly found in most households. The caddy can be faced front on, side on, or even turned in to face the wall, hiding it from regular viewing. I have made my final out of 300D Polyester in the colours black and navy. I incorporated the secondary colour to break up the structured look and to give off a playful feel. The shape of the front flap is inspired by the Australian company Crumpler. Overall I had a tough time sewing it on my regular commercial sewing machine, but I felt really pleased with my end design and thoroughly enjoyed this brief.
