Welcome to Oakville

Oakville is a town in southern Ontario, located in Halton Region on Lake Ontario halfway between Toronto and Hamilton, and is part of the Greater Toronto Area. Conveniently located 30km from downtown Toronto, with easy highway, and train access, Oakville strives to be the most livable city in Canada. Oakville is only a one hour drive from the U.S borders at Lewiston, Niagara Falls or Buffalo, NY. Oakville is home to three principle areas: Bronte Village, Downtown Oakville and Kerr Village, each brimming with character, green space, unique shops, restaurants, and community centers. Oakville is now home to over 200,000+ people and is one of the most densely-populated areas of Canada. Oakville will welcome approximately 1.4 million visitors this year. In the previous years, Toronto Life Magazine ranked Oakville as one of the “must visit” destinations in the Greater Toronto Area. HISTORY Oakville was originally inhabited by the indigenous Mississauga’s, and the early European settlement of Oakville. The natural harbour at Bronte provided a commercial port of entry for merchants and sailors in the early 1800’s. In 1827, Colonel William Chisholm purchased land at the mouth of Sixteen Mile Creek on Lake Ontario, later developing a shipbuilding yard and harbour in the area. Shipbuilding and lumber became important industries that soon attracted a variety of settlers. The lake shore also played an important role in Oakville’s Black History, as the entry-point for many American slaves travelling the Underground Railroad in search of freedom, which the city takes much pride in representing at The Oakville Museum.

HOME TO RESIDENTS AND VISITORS According to Environment Canada, Oakville has the best weather in Canada, with the right amount of precipitation and days under 0 degrees. Great weather calls for great fun, Oakville offers 1,420 hectares of parkland, 150 kilometers of trails and more than 200 parks, garden plots, dog parks, playgrounds, skateboard parks, splash pads, sports fields, tennis courts, two harbours and 31 waterfront parks. There is something for everyone to do in Oakville all year round with over 260 music, drama and various performances that are staged every year in Oakville. Both the Oakville Soccer Club and the Oakville Crusaders Rugby Club are the largest of their kind in North America. Oakville also has about 83 soccer fields, 74 baseball diamonds, 8 arenas with 17 ice sheets, and was featured as a stop on the popular Rogers Hometown Hockey tour in 2017. Oakville takes pride in being the home to Gold medalists Larry Cain (canoeist), Adam van Koeverden (kayaker) and Donovan Bailey (sprinter) as well as home to the Oakville Blades of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. Oakville is also home to a number of regional and national head offices, including Ford Canada, Tim Hortons, Siemens Canada and The Weather Network. Welcome to Old Oakville

Located just 30 minutes west of Toronto, Old Oakville rests on the shores of Lake Ontario, embracing all the advantages that comes with being a part of a waterfront community. Quiet and safe, Old Oakville combines nature and city life, and is a quiet, safe and thriving community. It prides itself on being a bit exclusive and offering a higher standard of living that makes residents feel special. The goods and services offered can range from unique to luxury. Old Oakville offers the best of many worlds; arts, culture, festivals and events catered to the young and old, there is always something fun to take part in as a community. HISTORY Old Oakville is a large portion of Oakville that sits along the lake which stretches from Third Line to Winston Churchill. It was built mostly in the late 50’s and 60’s, with newer pockets closer to 3rd line. Many of these homes are small by today’s standards, but sit on respectable size lots, hence many have been fully renovated or demolished to make way for a custom build home. Real Estate in this area cater’s to everyone’s specific needs, from trendy, one-of-a-kind dwellings, heritage homes, low-rise condos and rentals above storefronts, the downtown character is one of class and convenience. While competition may be the key to success for many businesses, cooperation has been vital in the development of today’s downtown Oakville. Under the guidance of the Business Improvement Area (BIA) and Town Council, downtown merchants, business men and women have worked together to ensure that downtown Oakville retains its history and tradition of personal service. They have developed a streetscape for downtown Oakville that reflects the appearance of the area in the early 1900s. Their efforts have helped create a relaxed atmosphere in downtown Oakville where shoppers are reminded of an era well removed from the hustle and bustle of modern-day living. HOME TO RESIDENTS AND VISITORS The Downtown of Old Oakville oversees the six city blocks along Lakeshore Road East from the Oakville Harbour to Allan Street, and is home to over 400 businesses, truly a fascinating heritage, art and entertainment destination. Downtown Oakville’s fine collection of boutique retail includes art galleries, restaurants, gourmet food purveyors, high style fashion & design houses, health and wellness centers, and offers the savvy shopper quality brands and exceptional service. The area is also home to a myriad of professional services, from banking and finance to real estate and renovation & construction. Downtown Oakville hosts a number of events each year, including the annual Sidewalk Sale, Midnight Madness, the TD Songs of Summer Festival, A Taste of Downtown Oakville, Tiny Tots on Parade and the Downtown Tree Lighting Ceremony. OAKVILLE MUSEUM AT ERCHLESS ESTATE The beautiful historic home and gardens of the Erchless Estate were once the home of Oakville’s founding family, but is now the setting for Oakville’s Community Museum. Colonel William Chisholm, an enterprising merchant and shipbuilder, founded the town and built Erchless overlooking his new harbour and Lake Ontario in 1858. Today, visitors can still enjoy the magnificent view and explore the beautiful buildings, grounds and gardens of Erchless. The Oakville Museum offers guided tours of the Chisholm family home, changing exhibitions, special events and programs that tell the fascinating stories of Oakville. Visitors can also visit our satellite exhibition gallery at Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre. General admission at both locations during public hours is free! The museum holds a diverse collection of objects reflecting the history of Oakville from its establishment to the present day including costumes and textiles, fine and decorative arts, ethnological artifacts and Chisholm family-related materials.

OAKVILLE CLUB The Oakville Club was built in 1854 by a group of “barn farmers” from the United States, yet the original granary was owned by Oakville merchant, Obadiah Marlat. Although historical accounts differ, it is possible that the building stands of the foundation of a warehouse constructed in 1828 by Oakville’s founder, William Chisholm. The warehouse changed hands for the last time in 1907 when it became home to the newly formed Oakville Club. For over a century, families have become active participants in sport, recreation and social activities at The Oakville Club. It is part of the waterfront charm that offer racquet sports, fitness, yachting, swimming, special events, children’s programs, and both casual and event dining. While the activi ties may be the draw; it’s the camaraderie and friendships that members say “keep us here for life”. For many, the Club has become a primary source of community connection and fulfillment. Through constant open dialogue between Members, Staff, Board and Community, the Oakville Club can provide an evolving membership with the most enriching Club experiences possible. Building on their traditions, they are a modern, accessible and lively place – truly an oasis in your own Community and one that brings a welcome sense of belonging from your first visit.
