Oakville is a town in southern Ontario, located in Halton Region on Lake Ontario halfway between Toronto and Hamilton, and is part of the Greater Toronto Area. HISTORY Oakville was originally inhabited by the indigenous Mississauga’s, and the early European settlement of Oakville. The natural harbour at Bronte provided a commercial port of entry for merchants and sailors in the early 1800’s. In 1827, Colonel William Chisholm purchased land at the mouth of Sixteen Mile Creek on Lake Ontario, later developing a shipbuilding yard and harbour in the area. Shipbuilding and lumber became important industries that soon attracted a variety of settlers. The lake shore also played an important role in Oakville’s Black History, as the entry-point for many American slaves travelling the Underground Railroad in search of freedom, which the city takes much pride in representing at The Oakville Museum.

Great weather calls for great fun, Oakville offers 1,420 hectares of parkland, 150 kilometers of trails and more than 200 parks, garden plots, dog parks, playgrounds, skateboard parks, splash pads, sports fields, tennis courts, two harbours and 31 waterfront parks. OAKVILLE MUSEUM AT ERCHLESS ESTATE The beautiful historic home and gardens of the Erchless Estate were once the home of Oakville’s founding family, but is now the setting for Oakville’s Community Museum. Colonel William Chisholm, an enterprising merchant and shipbuilder, founded the town and built Erchless overlooking his new harbour and Lake Ontario in 1858. Today, visitors can still enjoy the magnificent view and explore the beautiful buildings, grounds and gardens of Erchless. The Oakville Museum offers guided tours of the Chisholm family home, changing exhibitions, special events and programs that tell the fascinating stories of Oakville. Visitors can also visit our satellite exhibition gallery at Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre. General admission at both locations during public hours is free! Erchless Estate


OAKVILLE CLUB The Oakville Club was built in 1854 by a group of “barn farmers” from the United States, yet the original granary was owned by Oakville merchant, Obadiah Marlat. Although historical accounts differ, it is possible that the building stands of the foundation of a warehouse constructed in 1828 by Oakville’s founder, William Chisholm. The warehouse changed hands for the last time in 1907 when it became home to the newly formed Oakville Club. For over a century, families have become active participants in sport, recreation and social activities at The Oakville Club. It is part of the waterfront charm that offer racquet sports, fitness, yachting, swimming, special events, children’s programs, and both casual and event dining. While the activi ties may be the draw; it’s the camaraderie and friendships that members say “keep us here for life”.
